Terror on Lakeview Passage

The commotion outside starts off in the distance, far enough that it takes a few seconds to determine what is being heard.

Soon, the sounds are unmistakable.
The screams of people in fear and pain pierce the quiet street outside of Shield HQ.

Within seconds of registering the sound, there is a pounding at the door.

“HELP!” A voice pleads, terrified. “Monsters are loose on Lakeview Passage! HELP! For the love of Alemi, hurry!”

Sighing Sid places a bookmark into his book and stows it into his bag. "Well, that took longer than I had supposed." He pulls Mildred and makes sure that Branwen is ready. "I knew I should have made window access," he says as he runs out the front door and moves to the left of the door, looking around for the trouble and will run if he is able in that direction.

Bartomus saw the package waiting for him and took it up to his room. He laid out the items and worked the various potions into his one of the pouches that held the healing potions that affixed to his belt. He did the same with the magic bullets for his sling. The two rods that would help with seeing in the dark he placed on a shelf alongside the spider silk rope. His armor was next to that pile and he looked back over at his work bench. He sat down and started sketching a piece featuring the three Drow princesses and the lich Kurgan. He made progress on his sketch and liked the composition. Then he started to hear something, something that made the hairs on his head stand a bit and he stopped to listen.

He heard a pounding on the door. He quickly put on his armor, grabbed his belt with the various pouches, sling and glave and headed down the stairs. He watched Sid run out the front door and could hear the wailing and screaming from the streets. "SHIELDS, SHIELDS, no time for resting now, to arms, to arms. DUTY CALLS."

He walked out the doors as his bellow echoed behind him.

Stock's head pops up in the workshop, as he hears the commotion. He double times it to his room, grabs his gear and is out the door.

Are we assuming we have time to don armor? By the description and urgency in the scene, I'm thinking Stock wouldn't bother with armor.

Zanderallen curses himself under his breath for being such a lazy idler as he runs to grab his gear. "Not even keeping a chain shirt on, you absolute dolt." He pauses just a moment to look at his plate armor, neatly arranged on an arming mannequin in his room. His mind counting the bodies added to the death toll while he put it on. Armed with sword, shield, and his faith to protect him, along with a fair array of magical trinkets, he comes tearing out of the headquarters looking for whoever is doing the knocking, "What's going on? Where are the monsters?"

Micah, having settled in with one of the recently acquired books, pauses to listen anxiously as he tries to discern what he is hearing.

When he hears the call for help, he tosses the book on his bed, then shoulders one strap of his new haversack while reaching for his shield and mace. Wasting no time, he rushes down the stairs and out the door to see what is amiss, illuminated mace in hand. By the time he is to the door, he has the backpack in place, but still is carrying his shield by a strap.

Sid regretfully stows his book, grabs his weapons, and heads out of the door.

Bart follows, calling to his friends, "SHIELDS, SHIELDS, no time for resting now, to arms, to arms. DUTY CALLS."

Stock, Zanderallen, and Micah grab weapons and shields, and sprint outside.

The DM assumes Stohp does the same.
If Stohp plans on donning armor, please indicate such in her next post.

Sid glances at the man pounding on the door.
A local, and terrified, and with a woman and two children behind him.
Coming off of Lakeview Passage to this door has placed them in a dead end street.
Possibly bad tactics, but then again, he's put the Shields between him and whatever it is.

The man points up the alley toward Lakeview Passage.

Sid keeps moving, with the rest of the Shields right behind him.

Turning the corner, and finally getting a view of Lakeview Passage, Sid spots several people sprinting down that street, right to left.
Whatever is out there, its to his right.

Sid will run forward 90ft, curving to the right. He tries to pay close attention to the action, not wanting to stab anything that doesn't deserve it. Sid will look for these "monsters" to see what carnage is wrought, but will move to intercept any bystanders who might be in harm's way.

Bartomus follows behind Sid but stops at the entrance to the corridor that they are all heading down. He started to yell after Sid to wait, but Sid was off and moving a lot faster than he was moving. When he stopped, he quickly looked about trying to see what was causing all of the panic.

Stohp puts on her steelgrass breastplate as quickly as she can. Unfortunately though the material makes it as light and easy to use as leather it's construction still takes her a full minute to put on. A minute during which all kinds of things could be happening.

Micah notes the man what he assume to be his family with him with a nod. As he rushes past them, trying to don his shield, he says, "Stay safe friend.." With a gesture to the door he just exited, "Step inside while we look into it."

He then rushes to keep up with the others. At the first chance, he will cast bless on all the Shields before they get to dispersed.

Stock is tightening various straps on his backpack as they reach Lakeview Passage. He then jogs ahead to the corner, peaking to the right to see what he see. "That elf's moving fast..." he mutters to Sid's back.

Holding back from rushing ahead of everyone, Zanderallen restrains himself to quickly marching out of the alleyway and into the middle of Lakeview Passage. Turning against the rush of the crowd he looks where they're running from. He calls out to the crowd, "Stay together, get to the guard post and find buildings to take refuge in. Watch out for each other."

Stohp works fast to put on her armor.
Note that if she dons hastily, she can cut the time to 5 rounds at the cost of 1 point to her armor check penalty and armor bonus.
Might be worth it, in this case.

Micah casts a Bless spell that affects everyone except Stohp.

Sid moves out into Lakeview Passage, and cuts to his right.

Bart follows behind Sid but stops at the entrance to the corridor that they are all heading down. Due to the angle of the street, the taur finds he has to move just a bit further into the street to see what is causing all of the panic.

Micah instructs the man and his family to go in the house, and follows Bart.

Stock is tightening various straps on his backpack as they reach Lakeview Passage. He's also got a minotaur in his way.
The dwarf squeezes past Bart, and peeks around him.

Zanderallen quickly marches out of the alleyway and into the middle of Lakeview Passage. Fortunately, there isn't much in the way of civilians, as most have already fled past this spot. A couple stragglers stumble by.

It is not at all difficult to figure out what they're running from.

The eight creatures are about 9' tall, lanky, and treelike looking humanoids. Their long arms reach all the way to the ground. One arm ends in a wicked spike, and the other in a powerful tendril covered in bony hooks. Their faces are featureless - no eyes, mouth, or nose. They wear no clothing or armor, and their skin is blotchy and a colorful blend of oranges, yellows, greens, and browns.

They are approaching quickly, and seem agitated. Their heads scan about, they're pounding on doors, and breaking windows, and several are repeatedly skewering bodies on the ground.

Knowledge Nature DC 27 Highlight to display spoiler: { They are fey, known as Tall Men, and native to the Sargrass Plains on the Southern Continent. There, they are feared as the ultimate ambush predators, where their skin and coloration allow them to blend in perfectly with that environment. Here, the primary worry is that spiked arm is also poisonous.}

"Hey you ugly tree things! Hey!," Sid says in common waving his hands. He then says in Sylvan, "If you're lost we can point you back to someplace less crowded. If you're you're here to make a mess of things I have a Dwarf that is a carpenter ready to turn you into a nice headboard, and maybe some replacement doors." Sid moves to K31 as he waves his sword and yells at them, trying to make himself seem a big target.

Bartomus heard Sid's comments in Sylvan and followed after him into the larger plaza area.

He said in Sylvan first, "Ok, enough scaring the civilians here, you all look lost or in search of something, mind sharing it with us?"

He then repeated the same thing in Druidic hoping that they could understand one of the two.

"Groot! I mean Great! I'm pretty sure these things haven't been seen around here before. Hey did Sid just say Dwarf? What language is that anyway? SID! What are you saying about me?"

Stock draws a potion and drinks it. Anybody watching swears his arm hair gets shaggier and a bit darker.

Upon seeing the monstrosities skewering the bodies of slain townsfolk, he swallows as he thinks he recognizes some of them, Zander's anger moves him past any thoughts of diplomacy. Growling he roars out a challenge as he calls upon Domi's spirit, his sword burning bright with holy fire, "Domi take you!" Unhindered by armor he moves to close with the things.

The strange creatures skewering bodies, but he has not seen them actually attack anyone.

"Does anyone know what they are?" he shouts.

"Are they hostile or confused?"

Just in case... he says before he casts enlarge person on Stock.

Stohp puts on her armor. It has been maybe half a minute, so she has a ways to go.
Calling this Round 5 for her.

Sid crosses the street while calling out to the tall tree guys, and waving his sword.
They don't answer, but he does have their attention.

Bart moves up, also calling out in both Sylvan and Druidic. The tall tree guys don't answer him either.

Stock pulls out, and drinks, a potion. The dwarf gets hairier.

Zanderallen isn't messing around. The paladin flames on his sword, and moves forward.

Micah takes in the scene. He casts a spell on Stock, who gets bigger, just in case.

The Shields are successful in attracting the tall, tree guys' full and undivided attention.
They also succeed in figuring out the creatures' intent.

#1 charges Sid and skewers him with a powerful blow from that spiked arm. The elf feels a numbness spreading from the wound.
Sid takes 8 hp damage. Plus poison - must make Fort Save DC 13 or be stunned 1 round.

#2 charges Zanderallen, and does the same.
Zanderallen takes 16 hp damage, plus some poison which he ignores.

The rest of them move forward quickly, ready to press the attack.

Stock moves forward, annoyed by the tight quarters penning them in. He just can't quite get in an effective position and instead tells Sid, "Ok Sid, maybe back up a bit or these guys will eat you for breakfast. STOHP! Got any alchemists' fire we can try on these?!"

"Wait you want fire, fire, you said," Bartomus was a bit bewildered as to what had sent a roving forest walking through the Float and had been trying in a blink of an eye to sort out where these things had come from. Then one stabbed Sid, another slashed at Zander, and the idea of talking seemed to be lost. Stock's call for flame caught his attention, and his hands began moving into a small ball and flung that mental construct with words at the space between three of walking barkmen.

Flaming Sphere - Reflex save (18 [10+5+3]) to reduce half damage. Damage of 7 at T4 at space P24 - sphere is 5'

Expecting his plate to be there to catch the spike Zander staggers a little when he gets impaled. Intentions clear Zander wastes no time in throwing out some holy power, whether or not it has an effect he'll have to see. He steps up and starts hacking away at the nearest tree abomination.

Micah grimly nods as Stock calls for fire. He walks forward, careful to not block Stock, then calls upon Domi for holy fire. A column of flame engulfs the cluster of invaders closest to the front.

Sid overcomes the poison, and strikes back with his blade. He is likely relieved to see it strike home and leave a bloody cut.

Stock moves up beside Sid, while suggesting the elf back up, and calling on Stohp for fire.

Stohp is still putting on her armor. Round 6

Bart stops trying to figure out what they are, and where they came from. The druid heeds Stock's call, and brings forth a flaming sphere that rolls into #8.
The object catches it by surprise, and it takes the full blow.

Zander staggers a bit when impaled. The paladin responds with some holy wrath that leaves #2 a bloody pile of once living matter. It's quite dead.

Micah squeezes past Bart, and also answers Stock's call.
A pillar of holy fire slams into the midst of the bad guys.
These guys are really agile though, and all avoid the full effect.

By this time, everyone realizes the creatures are flesh and blood that have a tree-like look, rather than actual trees.

Now that Zanderallen has most definitively announced his presence, the creatures converge on him.
4 scores a critical hit for 25 hp
5 hits for 8 hp
and 6 strikes for 12 hp.
Zanderallen takes total of 45 hp damage. Plus 3 separate Fort saves vs DC 13 or be stunned for 1 round (not cumulative).

#1 shifts targets, slicing into the larger Stock.
Stock takes 8 hp damage, plus needs Fort save vs DC 13 or be stunned for 1 round.

"Oh guys! Remember the other tree guys? What from the Hands of Love?" Sid cartwheel´s out Stock´s way and slithers up and over to J29, because it is time to be stupid again. He lashes out with Mildred again, "I think I have some of the barky bits in my office at HQ."

Zanderallen grunts as the numbness spreads from his multiple wounds. With an effort he shakes off the lethargic feelings and strikes out at the trees surrounding him. Taking a moment to heal some of his wounds rather than unleash more smiting. "You might be on to something Sid. By this time, everyone realizes the creatures are flesh and blood that have a tree-like look, rather than actual trees.

Stohp keeps working that armor. Round 7

Sid cartwheels to J29, which is not flanking, and swings at #1, missing.

No matter. Stock takes a step forward and opens two huge wounds in #1. The creature collapses to the ground.

Micah steps forward and draws down holy power 'pon the creatures.
Two are unable to withstand his spell.

Zanderallen overcomes the poison, pauses for some healing, and then strikes out at two of his opponents, scoring hits each time.

Bartomus fumbled about when he saw the woodmen move forward and take on Zander with an absolutely frightening vengeance. He then tried to find that one special wand and eventually pulled it out, but by then more damage both ways had been done. He bellowed at himself in frustration for his slow response.

He flicked the wand at the fireball and directed it into the back of the armored threat in the middle of the hallway.

Sorry apparently didn't hit submit on the post yesterday. Use of Wand of Lesser Maximize MetaMagic to have the fireball do 18 points at No. 7 - Reflex save to avoid half, maybe w that wand though?

Seeing the others are effectively dealing with the line and worried of the harm the fleeing creature could do to his neighbors, Micah focuses on the one running away. With a few words, a gesture, and the presentation of Domi's symbol he calls forth a glowing blue war hammer, but is unable to successfully hit the fleeing monster.

Bart pulls out a wand, and directs the flaming sphere into #7.
The nimble creature skips away from the ball of fire, and avoids the full effect.

Stohp keeps working that armor. She peeks out a window to see if she can tell what's going on. But, the fight is around several corners, and she can't tell. Round 8

Stock steps forward, and cuts #3 in half with a single blow.

Zanderallen bolsters himself with healing energy, and then cuts down both creatures facing him.

Micah tries to knock down the fleeing #5, but his spiritual weapon misses.

Bartomus shrugged as the woodmen continued forward in spite their colleagues tumbling into a pile behind them. He flicked the sphere into the one to the right that was squaring off with Zander as he took a few steps forward.

Shrugging off another hit and dose of poison Zanderallen roars in exultation as Stock crushes the tree in front of him. Unimpeded by armor his training shows as he takes off in a sprint. Running a hand along his side as he runs to heal some of his wounds he calls out, "You don't get to escape that easily fiend!" He runs past the tree and skids to a stop in front of it, blocking further escape and brandishing his flaming sword.

Stohp gets distracted by the view, and then returns to getting this durned breastplate on. Round 9

Bart steps up, and sends the flaming sphere into #8.

Sid takes off after #5, taunting away.

Stock takes a step, finishes off #8, and nearly takes out #7.

Micah's Spiritual Hammer connects, and #5 drops.

The DM figures Zanderallen would rather kill the last standing creature, rather than run after one already down, and gives the paladin the benefit of the doubt. #7 dies under the sword.

Combat is over. A hush falls over Lakeview Passage, occasionally broken by a soft moan from one of the people lying maimed in the street.

Oh, and also the clomping of feet as Stohp comes chugging into view.

Bartomus let the fireball evaporate and took a look around. He walked over to the nearest wood barked warrior and with his glave lifted the helmet to try to figure who these people might have been. "Who are you?" He asked the face that he was looking at.

He stows his mace in his belt and pulls out a wand of cure light wounds as he rushes to the source of the moaning. As he approaches he surveys their injuries.

Satisfied that all the tree monsters are down, Zanderallen hears the moans of the wounded and moves quickly, taking charge of the situation as he goes into triage mode, "Stock scout ahead a little ways and either yell or report back. Bart any idea what those things were? Sid and Stohp see if you can get anybody to answer their door or find the guard, we have wounded that need care. Micah, I think I hear some wounded." Sheathing his weapons he moves towards the fallen, taking a healer's kit out of his bag of holding to begin treating who he can save.

He looks where they are on the street and with his great understanding of the Float, especially this level, he will move to anyone he knows works with the guard or has medical training. Zanderallen and Micah move to attend to the wounded citizens, while the paladin calls out instructions.

Stock opines that a Silver Shield Signal would be a great help. He also suggests following the trail of destruction to locate where the creatures came from. From where everyone is standing, that shouldn't be too difficult, as bodies and broken items can be seen all the way up Lakeview Passage.

Stohp arrives to see the fighting is over.

Bart gives one of the fallen opponents a good going over.
He sees they are not trees, but rather some kind of tall humanoid with skin colorations that look like a tree. It is not wearing a helmet, and he's startled to note it has no eyes, nose, or mouth.
The druid's intuition tells him he's looking at a fey creature of some kind.

Sid starts working the doors, sending one bystander off to the guard, and another to the Giggling Ghost, where there's usually a handy adventurer or two around.

His work quickly reaps benefits as various doors and windows crack open, the coast is declared clear, and more people come out to help.
Happy shows up with a couple clerics in tow. Neither is exactly sober, but they can still cast a healing spell, and they get to work.

A couple minutes later, a contingent of guards comes jogging up from the south, led by a unfamiliar looking sergeant.
"By Domi, what are those?" he wonders at the sight of the dead creatures.

Stohp can't really help with the treating of the wounded. It's not in her bag of skills. She's about as good as tracking as healing but it's an obvious trail so she'll follow it with any of the rest who can't help the injured.

Stock heads up the street with Stohp, crestfallen seeing the damage. He keeps an eye out for an obvious starting/entry point for the fey things. He also keeps his ears open in case there are other marauding bands of the things.

Bartomus was noticeably surprised by what he saw. He squatted down next to the one he had thought was wearing a helmet or something similar but his glave touched something that was once living flesh. "Fey, they're fey," there was a bit of concern in his voice as he spoke. "But why would the Fey attack folks in the Float? Do we know where they first appeared? We might also want to send word to the Druids higher up, something seems odd about all of this."

He said a small invocation to Eberyon asking for some guidance as to whose domain these belonged to and expressed his concern for the potential of more problems on the Float and about the Lake. As he rose from his squat, he felt some of the wounds and aches from their earlier battle had still not healed as there just hadn't been time. He moved his fingers as he slowly stepped away from the fallen and let the healing energy help heal what otherwise would take much longer.

CLW for 10, hadn't healed up from the last encounter totally, so figured this was the fairest way to do that

Seeing aid is coming and no one appears to be in critical condition, he nods with an amused smile to the two fortified priests as he heads with the others along the trail of destruction.

Leaving the wounded in the care of the guards and priests Zander addresses the sergeant, "Some sort of fey Sergeant. Secure the area and search for the wounded. We're going to see how they got in the city." He joins Micah as they move to join the others, "Do you remember where the portal was that opened on the Fence during the Sargrass Cataclysm? I think it led to some fey land that night? Do you think these creatures may have come from there?"

The wounded appear to be well in hand, and the guardsmen have arrived to maintain order.

Leaving the Shields to try and figure out what is going on.

Bart lets everyone know the creatures are fey, and worries about what that might portend.

Zanderallen wonders if perhaps they came through the portal opened during the Sargrass Cataclysm. He remembers it is called Lerntig's Gate, and is on the Trash Level.

Stock, following the trail, leads the group north.

The dwarf has no trouble backtracking the fey. Its unlikely anyone would.
The road is littered with bodies, blood, broken glass, broken wood, and people in the street more than willing to point out the direction the creatures came from.

The path leads north on Lakeview Passage, then west towards Dagger Point.
Before reaching that boulevard, it leads into a smaller alley to the north, and finally east to a small, ramshackle house. Well, shack, really.

The house is small, maybe 20' wide and twice as long, a grand total of 800 square feet of living space.

The cheap wooden door has been shattered - blasted outward by something or somethings that really wanted to get out of there.

"Ok let me have a quick look-see." Sid treats everything within 10' of the house as potentially dangerous. He goes in looking for traps, murder holes, and all manner of unpleasantness. He will focus on disabling and unlocking any amount of traps or locks in his way.

Bartomus looked about trying to get a sense of where they were in relation to their headquarters, but he was lost in the twists of the various halls and walkways. When they came to the delipidated shack with the door shattered about the floor, he nodded when Sid headed into the place looking for well anything. Bartomus spent a bit of time scanning the building and its surroundings.

"What would have brought those fey here? What court would be associated with this locale?" Bartomus asked aloud.

As they're moving down the street and seeing the ongoing destruction, Zanderallen helps direct people they pass by to the aid following behind them. He also uses a couple more Lay on Hands to close most of his wounds. As they approach the house he tenses at the sight of the door, reaching to adjust armor straps and feeling disconcerted when they aren't there. Without his usual ritual he seems a little more jumpy than usual. "That doesn't look so good."
