Bart moves up to open the next door, while the rest of the Shields take up position as best as they are able.

The druid pushes open the door.

In the next room, Bart (and only Bart) sees 5 lumbering humanoids with gray-green hides and a fishlike maws. Each is carrying what appears to be wooden greatswords lined with shark teeth. As the door opens, they look over.

Nothing happens for several seconds.

The fish guys all look at each other, and then back at the open door, and then at each other, and then at the door again.

Finally, one draws his greatsword, and begins a slow approach.

After a whispered word from Micah, Zanderallen sheathes his trident and draws his sword. With the Freedom of Movement in effect it swings freely through the water. He grins with the familiar hilt in his hand and awaits whatever comes to investigate the open door.

OOC, I don't have the software that Mike used to create the battle map. Which will be okay for tonight, I'll get something worked out if changes need to be made.

Stock stays still but adjusts his weapon grip.

Zanderallen draws his sword and swings it getting the feel for it. Umm, not sure how much of that you want to do if you're trying to stay out of sight.

Bartomus stares into the chamber. The Deep Ones are humanoid beings with fish, human and amphibian-like traits, they have grey-ish green, glossy and slippery skin with white stomachs. They have scaled, ridged backs, as well as webbed hands and gilled necks.

The nearest Deep One stares through the open door into the other room. (Perception 21, d20+7). Everyone needs to make a stealth check to beat that score. I will grant a +4 circumstance since most of you stated you were staying still.

The Deep One half turns toward the others. Bartomus can see those huge unblinking eyes and one seems to be staring right at him. Bartomus only, Knowledge Nature 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { It appears the creatures are incapable of blinking. }

The creatures speaks in an abhorrent, croaking voice. Only if you understand Aklo can you look at the spoiler. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Door's just don't open themselves. I think we'd best look busy and attentive."}

The other guards draw their weapons.

As Stock watches Bartomus seem to freeze in the door, his patience loses out. He swims like a fish bellowing a battle cry and jabbing his trident into the creature.

Taking his cue from Stock, Dorbin casts his summoning spell, placing the creatures in the room behind the guards, potentially giving Stock a flanking bonus. Three electric eels appear and attack while Dorbin shifts to try and get a view into the room past Stock.

He froze. What are those things? They had giant eyes, dark, endless blackness in the orbs. When he heard the shout, he moved forward and struck with his trident as he came into view. But misses widely.

With Bartomus looking like he was blown, Zanderallen is moving before he realizes Stock is moving right alongside him. Coming around the doorway he charges the nearest Deep One. Still getting used to the feel of swinging a sword underwater, unimpeded as it is, his swing is not his greatest but not bad.

When Micah hears the voice speak in a strange language, he turns to Zanderallen for interpretation, but when everyone charges in he draws his weapon and moves in as well, spear in hand.

Stock swims in and manages to stab the creature it's not flat footed as it kinda was suspicious, but you still hit it.

Dorbin's summoned eels appear and attack deep one 1 I assume, you never specified where they appeared gut mentioned that you were trying to give flank for Stock. If I'm interpreting your rolls right, then eel 1 hit both times, eel 3 hit with the tail.. Dorbin then tries to move forward. Deep One 1, sucombs to the eel attacks.

Bartomus, seeing the first guard die, moves forward attack Deep One 2, but misses.

Stohp, now that Bartomus has cleared the way moves forward. However, the first guard is dead, and the area is getting a little full as there is not a lot of maneuvering room.

Zanderallen charges forward before Stohp can complete block the entrance to the room. With #1 down he keeps going and gets to #2. He swings and hits his opponent.

DO2: swings his greatsword in an arc aiming at Zanderallen, the sword seems to cut through the water with ease. Alas he/she/it misses 12 (d20+8)

As Bartomus' swing missed, the effort he exerted took him past the one creature growling in a language he couldn't understand that fell to the blow of a fellow Shield. He saw another step towards him and was swinging a toothy blade at him as he jabbed at it with his own trident. His blow struck as the creature's sword bit into him. He pulled his own trident back and stabbed it into the creature again.

AOC on DO 4 for 21 for 9 pts, sorry wrong modifier; regular attack on DO 4 for 7 pts - 16 pts total

Dorbin’s eels watch the Shield move around, then attempt to keep up their attack on the creature. They bite at it, but can’t reach it, then all three of them point their tails together and electricity flows through the monster. Dorbin follows up with a small green dart of acid that magically flows through the water.

Micah looks up, and figures the ceilings to be 10’ high.
He moves forward, and strikes Deep One 3.

Bartomus stabs Deep One 4.

Stohp moves up, and knocks Deep One 3’s sword out of it’s hands.

Stock moves up, saying something about not killing all of them.
Deep One 3 claws at him, but misses.
Stock stabs at Deep One 5, and is really having trouble with this trident.

Dorbin and his eels do unpleasant things to Deep One 3. The creature is not doing well.

Zanderallen translates while casually running through Deep One 2. By the time he’s done, it is very dead.

Stohp was expecting one of them to bolt. She barges past her allies to get in range of the guard and tries to grapple him (32 to grapple, nat 20). This provokes AoO from the guard near her though (moving to D/E 13/14, should be able to do it only moving through allied spaces... or swiming up and over cause yay 3d space)

Seeing the deep one in front of him disarmed, Micah reverses his spear and, drawing upon his divine weapon mastery, jabs his foe in the jaw, attempting to knock it unconscious.
If the deep one loses consciousness, he moves to the doorway to see what is there and block the one Stohp has grappled in the unlikely event it should escape.

Deep One 3 claws at her as she goes by, but misses.

Dorbin’s eels kill Deep One 3.
Dorbin casts a spell. Deep One 5 stops struggling in Stohp's grip, and stares at the pretty lights.

With #3 down, Micah moves to check out the far room. But, Dorbin has planted a hypnotic sphere in his way.
Does Micah go through anyway (Will Save DC 19 if you do.)

Bartomus yells a warning, and flails at #4.

Stock runs #4 through. It falls.

Sid and Zander have no one to attack.

But we can't just leave it to sound the alarm and get us buried in Sahagin. How long will the lights keep it frozen here? Is there anyway we can immobilize it while we deal with it's kin?"

"I am with you Stohp," Bartomus said as he took a breath now that the threat had passed. He looked over the dead guards and picked up one of the toothed swords. [b]"Do we want to take one or two of these for a gift to the Councilman? I mean he could add them to the stash from the last time the Float was engaged down here."

He walked a few steps with the sword at hand trying to see how it was balanced and then opened the other door in an effort to avoid the dazzling light display.

Zanderallen moves into the hallway where the prisoners are supposed to be housed. "Hello, any one stuck in here? Somebody search those Deep Ones for keys." If he hears a responses he moves to where it's coming from otherwise he moves to a door and tries to open it.

Stohp keeps his hold on the dazed Deep One, while Dorbin keeps it dazed, and Stock ties it up.
The dwarf is satisfied the creature is securely bound.

Bartomus tries out one of the greatswords the Deep Ones were wielding. He finds it to be very well balanced. Furthermore, the water isn’t affecting the blade’s path. It cuts through with ease.

Zanderallen moves through the southern door, and calls out.

There is an immediate answer from a set of cells to his right.

“Yes! We are here! The King is here! Who are you?”

Micah finds a set of keys.

The Shields enter the holding cell area. Other than being underwater, it is a standard looking prison block, 5 10’x10’ cells lining each side of a central aisle way.

All the cells are occupied by merfolk, except for one on the far end of the block, which has got two merfolk….and a centaur.

The centaur is naked, and holding a Bottle of Air, which he holds with one hand while the other is grasping a piece of coral outcropping to prevent himself from floating about,

Micah sets about letting the merfolk out. Stock sets about refilling one cell with the tied up Deep One. The looks the merfolk are giving the Deep One are not at all friendly.

Meanwhile, a middle aged couple approach Zanderallen. All the other merfolk defer to them instinctively.

The male speaks, in Common.
“I am King Atteun. We thank you for this rescue, Silver Shields of the Float. I must admit, I am not familiar with this Mallon, but he must be resourceful indeed to have managed to persuade surface dwellers to aid us.”

The King’s eyes fall on Bart.
“As to what happened, we were surprised by sahaugin, aided by Deep Ones. They had intimate knowledge of the castle and the goings on of the city. How they gained such, I do not know. We were overcome, and imprisoned.

Micah gathers up equipment from the Deep Ones guards - a wand, and the five greatswords, all of which are magical, and operate in the water without penalty.

Stock tries to figure out what’s next. King Atteun points out particulars

The rest of the merfolk prisoners are in the cells below. They can be reached by going back into the guard room (K67), through the double doors to K62, south into the tower stairs (K21) and down to the cells.

The King believes the gear taken from the prisoners, including the centaur, is likely in the treasure room K63, which is at the far end of K62.

Stock asks about quickly upward. The king points out the stairs just around the corner. The K21 tower also rises to the next level.

As far as what’s up there, neither he nor the group know for sure.
“My daughter is up there,” the queen says, stiffly. You must help her.”

"So, could either of you explain how a centaur got down here and imprisoned with you? I don't want it to use up all of its air trying to talk to us."

Zander bows to the king and queen, "We were already on our way here pursuing adversaries of ours when we encountered Mallon. He told us what was going on and got us into the castle. He is sending word through your kingdom to be ready for when we free your majesties and the rest of the hostages. I think we need to head down, we can both free the remaining prisoners down here and equip everyone. So far we have been undetected. Then we can storm the upper levels and free your daughter." He finishes with a bow to the queen.

He then turns to the centaur, using all his restrain and decorum to stop from bursting our laughing at the poor fellow, "Well met Carver, I'm Zanderallen, Zander or even Z to my friends. I'm sure there is a story as to how you ended up locked up down here but for now let's focus on taking down your captors. We don't have much in the way of spare gear but what we have is yours to borrow. One of these shark tooth swords or this trident." Zanderallen motions to the swords taken from the Deep Ones or the MW trident he was using before receiving Freedom of Movement

Zanderallen walks the floor of the palace, seemingly unimpeded by being underwater. His long sword has returned to it's scabbard for the time being but he carries himself like it could be in his hand at a moment notice. His left arm has a shield strapped to it, simple except for a symbol of Domi's Hammer embossed upon it. He is encased in some sort of Conch shell plate armor and appears comfortable in the weight of the armor if not necessarily in it's material. Under the helmet is the face of a good looking young man with a pleasant smile and wavy brown hair. His manners seems very natural as he talks with a king and queen and like he is accustomed to being able to put people at ease.

Micah bows to the king and queen, then continues with distributing weapons and looking for wounds. When he gets to the centaur, he breaks his silence, "Well met. I assume you are warrior? Until we find your gear take my shield. It will provide you with at least some defense." He hands him his enchanted shield and any weapon he reaches for, keeping one of the greatswords for himself for the moment.

The priest swims around easily, despite wearing what appears to be a bulky suit of woven kelp. While talking, his visor is raised, revealing a youngish face showing care lines beyond his years and a move that naturally forms an affable grin. His holy symbol of Domi hangs visibly from a chain around his neck and the proffered shield bears a similar device.

Did we recover any of those crossbows the sahaugin were using? If so, are there spares to hand out?

The centaur introduces himself as Carver, and obviously has quite the story to tell. But, that may be best left to another time, such us in the air...in a tavern, perhaps.

Carver realizes he’s only mostly naked. He still has his horseshoes.

Both Carver and the remainder of the king’s guard are eager for any weapons available.
Micah recalls the group did recover the patrol’s underwater crossbows. The group has six.

Micah determines the greatswords are +1, and have no penalties due to being used underwater.

Micah and Zanderallen offer Carver a shield and sword.
Note Carver needs to keep a hand free to hold on to that Bottle of Air

What to do next is still the question.

The rest of the citizens are down the stairs.
The gear is most likely down the hall.
The King’s daughter, and most likely the fellow the Shields came down here for, and a whole lot of Deep Ones, are upstairs.

King Atteun assures Zanderallen that, once his daughter is safe, he’s quite prepared to lead a counter-attack.

Sid pulls out a length of rope, cuts three feet off of it and unwinds it a bit so he has the smaller ropes that make it up and tries to fashion a holder for his bottle of air.

As Mich looks Carver in the eye and demands an answer, "I suppose you could say that I can usually hold my own or possibly even better than hold my own. But being underwater, what I can say is I'll do my best. and If I can't, I'm sure the Boss will have a sharp word or three about my failure to do so. And if he doesn't my Aunt will certainly want one with me. Just point me in the right direction and I'll do what I can, oh, and nice shield by the way."

After a brief discussion, the consensus is maybe some weapons and armor would be helpful for the rest of the plan.

Sid works up a passable holder for Carver’s bottle of air.
And then, they’re off.

With Sid in the lead, and Stock near at hand, the entourage makes its way back into the guard room, down the wide hall to the right, and down a stair into another room.

The king’s guard give a brief, and quiet cheer, as various tridents, spears, breastplates, shields, and helms are scattered haphazardly about.

In another corner is what must be Carver’s gear. Micah’s concerns about his capabilities should be somewhat alleviated. Chainmail, shield, longsword, shortsword, greatsword, a flail, AND a honest to Domi lance are piled up over a backpack and composite longbow.

While Carver is working himself into his gear, one of the merfolk guards approaches, swimming casually. He hands Carver a helm.
“The King conveys his thanks, and offers this for your efforts,” he says.

Carver finds all his stuff, even the gold pieces, are present.

Soon enough, everyone is geared up and ready to go.

Bartomus winked and let the front line head down ahead of him following the others in an effort to quickly release the remaining merfolk detained in their own capital. "We need to hurry, remember we have a princess to rescue."

Micah had been considering giving his necklace to Carver, but when the king offers the helm, that concern is alleviated. As he watches centaur equip himself, the priest takes a look at Zanderallen, recalling how the paladin first became a Silver Shield and wondering if Carver might also be destined to become one.

Taken out of his reverie by the comments of the others, he clarifies, [b]Princess, yes, but the other prisoners first, less we expose ourselves to two fronts.

Carver straps on some seriously heavy armor and is putting on his other gear when the guard approaches and offers the Helm.
In Aquan, "Thank You, please tell the King I'll be sure it gets returned." He gives a slight bow and with a quick manipulation has it on and working. (UMD check: 35)
Carver bows his head, "Boss, thank you for teaching me that not paying attention is a bad thing. I promise to try and do better in the future, but I may need more reminders as you see fit to adminster." He says softly, almost like a prayer, when finished, he touches the holy symbol crafted into his left pauldron. (Holy Symbol to Gargul)
He stashes weapon after weapon in various sheaths at different locations around his body, He makes sure there is a set of extra horseshoes.
"It'll take me hours to get her retuned after being soaked, I hope I can keep her from warping as I dry her out. Sid, my new friend, I've got a wonderful lady here with a voice that can entrance most crowds at my favorite drinking holes, think after we get back to the surface you can save her?" He says as he pats one of the saddlebags.
After gearing up, he hands back the borrowed shield and straps on his spiked shield and pulls out a silver shortsword.
"Considering the situation, This is probably most useful, besides the Trident, but you look like you want to use it. Knew I should have picked up a cold iron one." The last he mumbles to himself, but is easily heard as he re-familiarizes himself with it's weight, giving it a couple quick flicks og his wrist.

Zanderallen offers to help Carver into his armor, himself knowing the difficulty of arming unaided. As the centaur continues to add weapon after weapon to his person he can't help but his eyes grow a little big. He hears the prayer and sees the holy symbol and nods in appreciation. He hadn't had much personal experience with followers of Gargul but he had heard good things and was glad to have another devout warrior alongside. He still thought of and missed K often.

At Micah's jab Zanderallen turns a little red and gives the priest a glare but refrains from commenting.

"Alright, on to free the remaining prisoners in the lower levels. Then we head up and take out the leaders without hostages left behind."

Carver gets geared up, much to the appreciation of the other Shields. The centaur tries out his short sword, noting its sluggishness in the water.
OOC - Please note underwater penalties on slashing weapons below.

Perhaps he recalls the offer of the use of a captured Deep One’s shark tooth greatsword (+1 greatsword with no underwater penalty), perhaps not.

The general consensus is to get the prisoners below.
Sid leads, Stock and Zanderallen follow, and Carver takes position behind them.
Curiously, the King and his guards follow as well.

The group traverses back down the hallway, and then into the tower stairs to the south (K21).
Descending, the exit into the hallway at the lower level, and proceed down a narrow hall to the cell rooms.

Looking right and left into the depressed cell blocks on either side of the hall, those in the head of the column (Sid, Stock, and Zanderallen) get an understanding of why the King and his guard accompanied the group, and why the general population of the city have not been more resistant.

The cells are packed with young merfolk, children, really. None are full grown, and they are crammed into the cells, seven or eight in each.

Scores of pairs of eyes fearfully look at the trio, and not a sound can be heard.

"That sharks tooth still available?" he asks as he resheaths the shortsword.
If he gets the Sharks Tooth, he'll put the spiked shield with his other gear where he usually carries it.

Zanderallen swears under his breath, his body shaking with anger, when he sees the children packed in the cells. Taking a couple breaths to steady himself he moves along the other side of the cell block from Carver, offering the same assurances, albeit only in common, his voice cheerful but strained, "We're here to rescue you, don't worry you're safe now." He starts trying the keys from the upper cells on the doors helping to extricate the inhabitants from their cramped quarters once they get them opened.

Once the children are out he turns to the king, "Your majesty, if you wish to see to the protection of these young ones with as much of your guard you see fit we will deliver justice to those upstairs. There will be no mercy for those who threaten those unable to defend themselves." By now Zanderallen is calm but his eyes shine with a deep anger and his body tense with barely controlled rage.

Stock leans over toward one of the children, making a sign of peace with his hand. "She can't understand me I suppose. Must be scared though. I suppose it's up to the King but I think we need to get these children out of here. Maybe they can hold up for a bit in that warehouse we entered at."

Micah shakes his head, sadly at the sight of the prisoners. "Justice," repeats the priest, echoing Zanderallen.

And Stock's sentiment about the princess, echoes his own thoughts. Not wishing to delay her rescue, he cannot neglect those before him, "Is anyone in need of healing?" he asks, counting any one of those able to, to translate.

"Besides being at the bottom of a lake, and in a castle, can someone fill me in just a bit? I was swarmed and brought down here, a bit more information would be great. I just want to be sure I'm sending the right people to see the Boss.
Now, I understand those who captured need to Visit him, but I'm not clear on who or what this Crimson is."

Carver gives the shark's tooth a good feel for balance and weight.
You also notice a slight blue glow around his hooves.
It takes Carver a couple tries, but he summons 4 globes of light and uses them to entertain the young after the group gets them released.

If you really want to tick off the Silver Shields, holding children as hostages appears to be a good start. The group, as a whole, are not happy.

Zanderallen and Carver move to reassure and entertain the children, while Micah asks about healing.

All the children appear undernourished, but the cleric sees no obvious wounds.

The effect on the King and his men are even more pronounced. They rush into the cell blocks, and assist Zanderallen in opening the cages.

The sight of the merfolk, meanwhile, set the children to cheering wildly. As the cells are opened, the children stream out to fiercely hug any and all merfolk they find. To the surface dwellers, they present shy smiles, but otherwise steer clear.

The King and his men are all smiles around the kids, but as the King pulls Zanderallen around the corner, that facade drops quickly.

“Can you help us escort the children back the way you came?” he asks. “Is it safe?”
The merfolk’s face is as hard as the paladin has seen.
“We must get the children away. And then….and then, I will assemble my force, and we will retake the city.”

"I think we can show them the way back to the passage to the warehouse, right?" Bartomus asked as he looked about at the group of Merfolk that had been released. "That would be the best way to let them get to safety. Or, a least the children to safety."

Bartomus points back behind him and beguns heading that direction in hopes that the others are following him.

To Carver, Stock says "Lord Crimson is the reason we're down here. He's your basic run of the mill evil genius. He also was formerly known as Lord Damion Peerimon and has been responsible for many of the acts that the Shields have been looking into in Lakeview since before I joined the group. Among the most recent though, he sweet talked his way past our guards and murdered them in our compound. He then fled here with a halfling botanist that he abducted from us and who was under our protection at the time. We think the halfling has been returned to the surface but Crimson must be brought to justice. Or killed."

Being used to be the emergency response team, Carver feels a bit out of place underwater and not as mobile as he's used to.

Micah's smile is broad and wide as he sees the children restored to their people. Saddened by their malnourished condition, he is relieved to see no signs other other maltreatment.

"Carver, I see from you equipment that you are used to charging your foes. You will fit right in," he adds with a meaningful nod to Stock and Zanderallen. "Once battle begins, I magically enlarge Stock. With his new toy, referring to the underwater greatsword, When we get encounter foes, I imagine things will go violent very quickly and I have no doubt you will not feel a bit out of place."

Zanderallen clasps the king on the shoulder, "Head back down to the lower storage levels. There should be no foes left. We can escort you that far if you desire. In one of the back closets is a tunnel leading out to a warehouse. In there you will find Mallon and others of your subjects awaiting the freeing of your majesties and the hostages to rise up. We will then head upstairs to free your daughter and find the enemy we came here looking for."

Carver and the Shields continue to get acquainted with each other.

The king nods assent to Zanderallen's plan, and within moments, Sid has taken the lead of a rather long, and slow, line of children.

The king's guard and the Shields do their best to move the assembly along, while also keeping them quiet.

But, Sid has to cringe at the amount of noise coming from behind him.

Nevertheless, everyone continues moving, and no guards are encountered.

Back up the stairs, through halls to the guard room, north to the long stairway dropping back down, and then along the long, narrow hall (which, some of the younger children discover, makes a great echo chamber.
Lastly, into a large vault filled crypt.

The line comes to a halt for a time in the central hallway, where an very large, very dead shark still lies on the floor. Several children simply refuse to cross, and must be carried, hands over eyes, past the monster.

Bartomus tries to look less afraid of the nightmare shark that lay dead in the hall. He worked to encourage the children and tried even using himself as a "body fence" in a rather comedic way to help make the kids less afraid. When that failed, he helped carry a few of the children past and towards the hidden entrance where they had their first castle fight with guards.

"Could someone ask what these little doors and such are used for?" He asked aloud in hopes of getting some sense for the purpose of this area. "But, but, we need to hurry, really need to hurry."

As he remembers his struggles hitting the thing previously, he presses the sword a little deeper into the dead thing's side. Sid and Carver help carry some of the little ones past the dead megalodon, while Bart and Stohp form a wall, and Stock and Micah poke and whack at the corpse.

Soon enough, everyone is across. Sid leads the group to the secret chamber, and the king’s guard takes over from there.

The king takes the hand of every one of the Silver Shields.
“You have our gratitude,” he states solemnly. “I will gather what I can, and attack right away. This should keep the sahaugin patrols from returning to the castle. You should encounter few guards at this time of day.”

Overhearing Bart’s question, the king’s turns, and finally gives the taur an answer to his question.
“This is the royal crypt. These are the tombs of my ancestors.”
The man gives Bart a wry smile.
“Please do not rob them.”

With that, he ducks into the tunnel after the children.
A quartet of guards remain.
They give you a respectful nod, and follow their king.

With the children, king, and king’s guard safely on their way, the Silver Shields can return to the matters at hand. Namely, rescuing a princess, and bringing a longtime pain to justice.

The group retraces their steps back to the circular tower.

Following the map Stock is holding, they ascend, and find themselves on a higher level.

According to Bart’s nixie friend, they are directly outside the rooms Briadoc was occupying.

Sid tries the door, and finds in to be locked.
No problem.

The elf rather quickly picks the simple lock, and the door swings open. Revealing a bit of a mess.

A wooden table lines onne entire wall of this 40x40 room, and was apparently an alchemy lab of some kind.
Vials, bunson burners, candles, tubes, bottles, and liquids of various colors float haphazardly in the flooded room.

There is also a cot, now soaked blankets, a small table with a pot of what might have been food, and wine bottle in one corner.

Two bottles of air, in adjacent corners of the room, futilely bubble air.
The air bubbles are flowing out of an opening in the back of the room.

There is no one here.

"No one = ok, but look there's bubbles back there...so, that has to be coming from a place filled with air, should we go check that out?" Bartomus asked as he looked about the room.

Perception 16 roll was from an earlier attempted post - thought I sent it via email to GMs as I was fighting with the system on my phone.
