DM MikeK - We're going under water?

The Shields are forced to admit that Peerimon has most likely escaped to this Merfolk City with some new-found allies, the Sahuagin.

Stock bluntly asks Lord Paragon Belkior what he knows about them. The halfling chuckles pleasantly, and gives the dwarf a grin.
“All business. I like you. As far as the Sahuagin, we know they are there, but haven’t had formal contact. A couple of adventuring parties have gone under the Float in years past to check them and the merfolk out. Neither wanted anything to do with us. I, uh, can confirm the location of the Merfolk City is where that map says it is.”

There is some concern with securing the equipment needed for an underwater expedition.
Micah points out that each of the group were given Necklaces of Adaption by the Lizard Folk.
[DM Note - If you have them on your sheet, you have them. Otherwise, you don’t]

Dorbin frets over the cost of more gear.

Lord Belkior clears his throat. “I know a guy. Go see Syrdeth Redbow. Let him know I said he would lend you what he has.”

Thoughts turn to the Sahuagin and this underwater city. Based on what’s been read here, and Belkior’s assistance, it’s evident these are two different things.
The underwater city is home to a population of Merfolk. It is not directly under the Float, but very near the middle of the Lake, which is tens of miles away.

Sahauagin - Knowledge (Arcana, Dungeoneering, or Nature) DC12 Highlight to display spoiler: {
This scaly humanoid has a long, fish-like tail. Its arms and legs end in webbed claws, and its piscine head features a toothy maw.
Warlike and proud, the sahuagin rarely ally with others, and view most other aquatic races such as the aboleths, the merfolk, and their ilk as competitors. The only creatures they seem to respect and adore apart from their own kind are sharks, for in these relentless predators the sahuagin see much of themselves. A sahuagin stands 7 feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds.
They can speak with sharks.
They fight with weapons - typically crossbows and tridents
They can have classses - fighter and barbarian are most common.
They have blindsense and darkvision.

Thought then turn to the possibility of more assassins.
Micah renews his Detect Magic, and again, Lord Paragon Belkior’s aura is nearly overwhelming. Everything on him radiates very strongly.

The more they discuss this line of thinking, the less concerned the group becomes.
Peerimon has obviously left, taking whatever people, and whatever cash, with him. The group at the warehouse is gone, and the ogre mage is unlikely to hold grudges.
So, family and friends should be safe.
DM Says - No need to worry further about that.

There is the sound of several sets of armored, running feet approaching, within moments, a group of City Guardsmen appear at the door. The lead Guardsman steps in, looking over the group while speaking.
“HALT and drop your weapons! In the name of the City, I command you to….eep

It’s about this point when the man’s eyes fall upon the all-white halfling standing to one side.

Lord Paragon Belkior smiles. “Thank you, Captain. But, I have this end covered. Please secure the outside doors, and let no one else in or out.”

The Guardsman gulps, nods, salutes, gathers his squad, and leaves.

Belkior turns to Zanderallen.
"Time to make this official."

“Silver Shields,” he intones formally, “you are requested to go to this city, retrieve the fugitive Lord Peerimon, and bring him back to the Council for trial and judgement.”

The halfling turns his gaze on Stock.

“Alive”

Zanderallen looks at the guards and smiles as they notice who else is present with the shields.
He acknowledges Belkiors commission. "We will hunt him down and bring to justice, alive if at all possible."

"Seriously though, those Sahuagin are no joke. So basically we are to believe that Peerimon basically bought their alliance with access to Briardoc to fix their food supply problems? Seems like once they get a hold of the halfling, there's not much that keeps them loyal to Peerimon. Maybe it doesn't have to come to serious blows..."

"...and why did Belkior give me such a long look? Of course I'll have Peerimon's safety in mind."


He can't avoid a little chuckle as he tries to keep a straight face. "In all seriousness though, I don't actually believe I have one of them necklace's anymore. We'll need to find another way for at least me to travel down below."

"But, I gotta say, the idea of the Lake being filled with people and sharks, has me really, really liking the very top of a turtle. I mean I heard rumors, but just thought they were stories told to keep little ones entertained or behaving."

He looked over at the Paragon and the surprised captain of the guard, "we'll do our very best your Lordship. Should we try to bring any gifts or message to this City from you and the Council? Maybe that could be a way to counter what ever Crimson has concocted up about our City."

Micah nods agreement with the others.

Gathering himself in preparation to go, he says to the Shields, "It appears we have plans to make and a Syrdeth Redbow to visit." As he helps in gathering the maps and other documents, he turns to their benefactor. With a bow, he gives his farewell, "Thank you, Lord Belkior".

With a face as straight as Stock's he whispers to the dwarf, "He said 'alive'. He did not mention anything about being conscious."

Bartomus asks Lord Belkior if any messages should be conveyed from the Council to the Merfolk City.
The halfling considers.
“Good question. I suppose pretty much the same as was conveyed to the Lizard Folk. We are always interested in trade and mutual protection. Should they be agreeable, we would welcome representatives to discuss further contact between our peoples.”

Stohp wonders about the possibility of playing off merfolk against the sahuagin, and gaining some allies against Peerimon in the process.

Stock relishes the possibility that Peerimon has outlived his usefulness to the Sahaugin.

Stock and Bartomus will need some equipment.

Micah determines a trip to see Syrdeth Redbow is in order.

Zanderallen asks about Peerimon’s family, and Lord Belkior shakes his head.
“No family. I’d assume he’d have servants. I’ll ask around to see where they went.”

With nothing more to see here, the Shields walk back to the Fence Level.

Back to HQ, where some cleanup is still likely required? Or to Shield Construction to talk to Syrdeth Redbow about equipment? Or to a bar for a good, stiff drink?

Stock strips off his armor as soon as they arrive in the HQ and immediately turns in. First thing in the morning, he is in the workshop mindlessly planning a piece of wood. Curly wisps of wood shavings pile up at his feet.

As he left, he bowed to the Paragon and followed his fellow Shields to their headquarters. It was a long, long day and he needed to rest and reflect. He pulled off his equipment, cleaned it as best as he could, and then found comfort in his bed.

He awoke and just spent time reflecting on the day ahead, the day that passed and some of the challenges. He thought on it long and hard, fire, healing, lightening, but then he kept coming back to water and there his mind fixated. Eberyon, I am a creature of the plains, grasslands, and such. Now on a city that floats in water surrounded by creatures I know not, but for the turtles and they are wondeful. I may be calling on your help, Lord of the Fey, in the days ahead.

He felt at peace and wandered down the stairs in search of something drinkable, something edible. He catches sight of Dorbin at the doorway to Stock's workshop and heads back that way. "So, that's how we are going to breath and such down under. That is a relief. But, how do we get down there? Just jump? What also could we take to win over the folk we encounter to help? "

Micah silently joins in with Stohp as she tends to dead. Before too long, he grabs a basin and towel, manually cleaning up the blood and gore of their fallen friend and wards. Finding comfort in the simple task of cleaning, he lets his mind wander on nothing of any import, at least for a while.

((Ok, apparently I made a post... and then didn't hit submit. The 16 was a Knowledge(Dungeon): 16. I have a new job that I am apparently frazzled more than I thought. Sorry!))

Sid helps with the dead as well, paying his respects. He goes to the Ghost and makes sure that they are paid up for a few days and let's Ellie in on what's been happening. Ellie isn't happy with the thought of being away from home and the shop, but they compromise that she will stay at the Ghost at night and open the shop a bit late.After a long night the early morning comes and he heads to HQ. Leaving Ellie in the most interesting, most protected place he can imagine as he prepares for the coming day.

The Shields arrive back at HQ, to find a small army of neighbors already helping out.

Ellie is at the forefront of the cleanup effort. Sid makes some casual inquires, and finds that Ellie figured out quite a bit while waiting for him at the Giggling Ghost, and set about commandeering Happy and quite a few others to come and assist.

HQ, under Ellie's direction, is nearly clean by the time the Shields arrive.

Rodrigo, and the two young watchmen have been laid out on makeshift biers in the workshop.

The Shields wearily join in, with Stohp making arrangements with friends of the trio.

Soon enough, the work is done. The helpers leave. The Shields get some sleep.

By morning, the three bodies have been removed, and Stock has his workshop back.
Sid sees Ellie back to the Giggling Ghost.

Rested, cleaned up and healed, Stock looks antsy. "So, to this man Redbow now? I'd like to have this wrapped up with Peerimon quickly, especially since we'll be going underwater. Anybody have a spear or something? I think I may have to pick up some kind of backup weapon that's more conducive to being underwater. Also is there anything else we might need?"

Dorbin continues his conversations with Stock, "Indeed, combat underwater will be very different. Slashing weapons aren't going to work so well unless you have some magical help. I've read of spells that can help one move underwater, but those are beyond my capabilities, even in scroll form. It is another thing that can be found on some items, like rings, but those are quite expensive as well. Sure, we could all go buy rings with that freedom, but that would cost a huge amount of gold that I'm not sure we can cover unless we get an advance or something. We can ask Redbow, it would be nice if everyone could get two rings, a ring of water breathing and a ring of freedom of movement."

Micah finds his morning prayers particularly restorative that morning. Whenever his mind wandered to they challenges before them, he found himself remembering all the successes the Shields have had against Peerimon so far. His meditation also provides him some incite into their upcoming underwater encounter.

"Stock," he responds, "a thrusting weapon will likely work much better underwater. Additionally, I have a spell I can draw upon called Freedom of movement. It removes any hindrance to motion from being surrounded by water in addition to providing some other benefits. Its effects last for about an hour once cast. I can prepare it a few times, but we might want to invest in some scrolls."

When the Shields are ready to go to Redbow, he will join them.

Zanderallen's sleep is troubled that night. He tosses and turns and his dreams are plagued with the sneering face of Peerimon standing over the wreckage of their headquarters. He wakes without feeling rested and doesn't feel much better after his morning devotions. He keeps to himself in the morning and heads out to meet with Redbow.

The Shields break their fast, with some achieving more rest than others last night.

The discussion continues as to how best to operate underwater.
OOC - non magical equipment, including masterwork, within reason, can be purchased within the city

The group makes its way down Lakeview Passage to the docks, and then follows them toward Sailor’s Fork. For the dockworkers, sailors, fishermen, and merchants, today is just another day, and the sounds, sights, and smells of their daily labors waft over the seven adventures as they make their way.

Shield Construction is a small office area with a large warehouse. Some of the group have been here before, securing a flying carpet to bring the Lizard Folk up to the Gold Level in style.
Meeting the group at the door is the non-descript elf with an easy smile and intelligent eyes that some have met, and others might recognize as one of the merchants wooing for the Lizard Folk trade contract.

Syrdeth Redbow offers Zanderallen a hand.
“We meet again. I wish it were under better circumstances.”
The elf gives a nod of greeting to everyone.
“Sorry to hear about Rodrigo. He was a good man, and you all gave him a good restart, too.”

Syrdeth is walking as he speaks, waving for the Shields to follow as he moves deeper into the warehouse.

“Our mutual friend sent word last night about what you’re planning. I’ve some items we salvaged from the last attempt to take on the fish people. Hopefully, they serve you better.”

The elf throws back a covering, revealing quite an assortment of weapons and equipment.
“Now to be clear,” Syrdeth says, seriously, “these are on loan. No keepsies, unless you want to buy them.”

He points out the particulars of the items on the set of pallets:

4-Gloves of Swimming and climbing
3-Goggles of Night
6-Helm of Underwater Action
4-Fishscale flippers: Gain swim speed equal to your normal movement. (Boot slot)
1-Second Elder’s Wrath: A mundane-looking bow embedded with clusters of gems at either end and strung with kelp. This bow may be fired underwater at no penalty, and deals a bonus 1d6 piercing damage to any creatures hit while underwater.
1-Shell Armour: Full plate, Heavy armor. No movement penalty under water and provides some buoyancy.
1-Kelp Armor: When dry the kelp provides no more protection than light robes. But when underwater or wet it provides Full plate, heavy armor protection at no movement penalty.
2 - Underwater masterwork light crossbow.

Looking at the arrayed items, Bartomus thought a bit, scratched his chin, and then sighed.

Everyone will need one of these, he said pointing to the helms. There are even a few for us taurs. I have my glave, it's well made, so I think the tridents may be best used by a few of you, right? He shrugged as he really wasn't sure of what made the most sense.

"These two, the shell and this um well green husk suit, it's armour you said, good sir, and so I think that means Zander and Micah you need those." He felt pretty confident about that recommendation.

He kept looking at the items and paused at the necklace. "Which of us would be best for this beauty?"

Dorbin openly gapes at the dazzling display of magical items. He nods at the suggestion of the helms for nearly everyone. He know he needs one. He also picks up an underwater light crossbow, just in case.

Micah barely contains a gasp of surprise as the magical items are revealed. "Master Redbow, this is an amazing and valuable collection of underwater gear. Can I assume that our mission is not the first underwater endeavor attempted by residents of the Float?"

Along with the others, he takes inventory. "I agree, Bart. The armor is best used by Zanderallen and myself. I will prefer to take the pearl and a set of goggles, freeing up my necklace of adaptation for someone else to use. Alternatively, I would take the flippers, goggles, and gloves and retain my necklace. On second thought, that may be the best option, giving the item that provides the best speed to someone else.

"I can make use of a trident, but would also like to obtain a shortspear for underwater use."
He ponders a moment before selecting the bottle of air. "There may be some uses of this as well," he muses aloud.

He then turns to Dorbin, "What about Emily Jasmine?

Zanderallen takes the offered hand, "Thank you for your condolences. Let's see what you've go....." his words trail off as Redbow reveals the treasure trove gathered for their use. "By the gods, this is amazing. I was really worrying about how to get down there, but this... We're set, thank you Redbow, I'll make sure it all gets back to you when this is finished."

He looks over the gear and picks out some items for his use, "If it works for everyone, I'd like the Shell armor, a pair of those swimming gloves, one of the helms of underwater action, and one of the tridents. I'll take on any sharkman with that gear."

The Shields go over the equipment, working out who gets what.

So, you have gear, but is there any more you need?

And, you have a map, but no current way to get to the stepping off point in the middle of Turtle Lake.

"Now that the mundane matter of operating underwater is partially determined, do we actually know where to look for the Merfolk city? I mean, unless it's right under The Float, we'll have to charter a turtle to take us out somewhere. Can we check with one of the guilds?"

Goggles of Night: 60-foot darkvision
Helm of Underwater Action: see five times farther than water and light conditions would allow for normal human vision AND if the command word is spoken, the helm of underwater action gives the wearer a 30-foot swim speed and creates a globe of air around the wearer’s head
bottle of air: breathe as a standard action under water using the bottle
pearl of the sirens on a necklace: breathe in water as if she were in clean, fresh air. Her swim speed is 60 feet, and she can cast spells and act underwater without hindrance.

"Oh, oh, well, I guess I could leave it here with you then," Bartomus said as Stock pointed out the problem with his now rather trusted glave. He lifted one of the tridents and looked back at Stock, "it's the last one, so you or me? Also, will the flippers work for a taur like me? A helm, flippers and a trident, maybe a few weights sewn to the kilt's panels and I should be good to go."

Bartomus looked back over things and then back at the Paragon's assistant. "So, wait, you had an excursion against these water folk? Um, how did that go? Any pointers? And, could we just rent a turtle to take us there and wait for us to resurface?"

Dorbin puts the helmet on and looks around at the others. He says, "How do I look?" When Micah passes on the pearl necklace, Dorbin picks that up as well. He turns when Micah asks about Emily Jasmine. He ponders for a moment and then says, "Well, I will ask her. And yes, she has started talking to me, at least when she feels like it. I can actually understand what she says, but I don't imagine she's going to have much of a desire to go on top of the water, never mind under the water. Micah continues to smile as Dorbin speaks of Emily Jasmine. He has heard of wizards speaking with their familiar, but finds the thought of a talking cat a bit unnerving when he is living with one.

his expression turning grim, he looks at the map. "How do we get here from the Float? he asks pointing to the city. He looks for more details, especially the depth. Do we just swim down there and back or should we climb down and back with ropes and walk along the bottom of the lake?

“Likely your best option. I’d say swim from there. It’s too far down for ropes.”

Everyone recalls the Turtle Boat driver, Rick, and his turtle, James, were fine transportation to and from the Lizard Folk.

A quick survey of the docks reveals Rick and James lounging nearby.

The man cocks his head to the side, and regards Zanderallen’s armor.
“Well, That’s certainly different. You folks headed back out to a masquerade ball or something?”

Can we do a roll call on the helms of underwater action? Two of the shields won't have one: Micah is one of them. The other person who does not have a helm should have the pearl of the sirens.

"Well, first off, its about a day out. I got provisions, so we can eat going out, and coming back.
I can hang around the area for 2, maybe 3 days. Do some fishing. Got a smokestick and an everburning torch you can take with you. When you come up, light off whichever I can see, and I'll be there 15-20 minutes.

You gonna be gone longer, we might need some kind of timing that I come back and check."

The Shields agree to Rick's price, and Stohp even pays him in advance.
"You are very lucky I'm the honest type," the man replies with a bow.

Stohp and Sid have additional instructions around contact after the dive, and the turtle driver nods solemnly.
"If you survive whatever it is you're up to, I'll be there to fish you out," he promises.

Dorbin would prefer to wait another day to do some research on previous expeditions, but the rest of the Shields overrule him.

With that, the group boards James, and the turtle launches itself into the lake.

Hours pass, and again, the enormity of the lake manifests itself. James is moving much faster than your standard clipper, but there's an awful lot of distance to cover.
On the plus side, there is plenty of time to rest and prepare spells.

As the sun rises the next morning, Rick taps James on the top of his head, and the turtle slows to a stop.
It floats lazily on rolling waters that look exactly like every other section of rolling waters, stretching out the horizon on all sides.

Rick turns to the group.
"This is it. Where you wanted to be."

He sat in quiet contemplation as they rode the great turtle out into the vast lake. Before the trips were exciting as adventure awaited, and it should have been that way this time too. But, now he knew something was really down there. A whole new world filled with its own creatures and its own city that was completely unknown to him before. He found himself looking down at the rippling surface of the water trying to find something he could see or thinking he might have seen something in the murky swirls of color and darkness.

He went to sleep and managed to sleep with only an occassional waking to look about. Morning light caused him to rise and he sat there contemplating the morning, the tasks ahead, and giving his attention to Eberyon's interactions with him in the past. That too occurred at a strange place to him as a young taur, where hills and grasslands gave way to a hidden glade of greenness and water.

"Eberyon, into this deep we will travel, and therein I may need your help when I call." He whispered this outloud after he focused his attention on strength, healing, lightening but that made him so nervous, and then his whispered call to Eberyon. The lapping of waves seemed to change as the the giant turtle slowed.and he heard Micah's question to Rick.

He stood, quickly stretched, gathered his new helm, his flippers, and his new trident. He walked over to the two of them. "So this is it?"

He looked about and then back at Micah. "We just put these things on, and then dropping in and down, right?"

He gulped a bit more loudly than he intended.

Stohp sleeps the entire trip. No telling how long they'd be below and there might not be time to sleep later. The stopping of the boat wakes her, and she quickly slides on her new gear and jumps in. "Everyone take a few minutes to adapt. We need to be used to this new gear before we have to fight in it." Taking her own advise she does a few laps around the turtle, marveling at how natural it feels. Normally she's a terrible swimmer.

(If I understand swimming correctly she doesn't need to make a check since the helm gives her 30 feet base swim speed. Not unless she's in rough waters or other difficult scenarios).

“Well, distance and direction, for starters,” Rick answers Micah. “I know what direction to go. I know how fast James goes, and I know how far we have to go. After that, the taste of the water, it's temperature, wind direction, smell, pretty much everything you got.”

He shrugs, and points to a spot 20 or so feet away.
“Course if you’re asking how I know that X means right here instead of right there, well, I don’t. I could be off by several hundred feet. So, if you’re looking for a rock, you got some looking around to do once you get down.”

There’s nothing much left to do but jump in and just keep swimming.

Bartomus put on the helm, gave the command, and took a deep breath. He then put on the flippers and hefted his trident. He sat at the edge of the water and James' shell, sighed and then slipped into the water. He at first wasn't certain of how best to swim, but watched Stohp as he held onto James' shell. Mimicking Stohp's actions he began swimming and got a bit of speed with it. He began to be a bit more daring and swam along James' shell and and around his back legs back to his shell. The flippers helped, but holding the trident in one hand made it a bit of an awkward side paddle.

Micah joins the others into the water. After a moment he realizes he has been holding his breath. He slowly exhales, then takes an experimental shallow breath, before confirming that he also can breath here.

He presses the tip of his spear into his borrowed armor after noting its submerged transformation. Convinced that it will guard against weapons, he joins the others in their descent.

Hearing Dorbin speak successfully, he adds something that has been on his mind, "We are going to need to adjust our tactics. Except for the occasional flying creature or magic use, we have been accustomed to working in two dimensions. Now, up as well as down has to be considered. It has occurred to me that it will be much more difficult to guard our less armored members. But the same will be true of those we might encounter." He glances at Stock as he comments, "At least no one is out of our reach like that blue guy was.

Impressed with the freedom of movement of his armor underwater Zander does some experimental spins and flips to get a feel for it's weight. Not being an accomplished swimmer they look awkward but serve his purpose. "You speak fairly Micah, and while our swimming may be magically augmented by our gear I suspect we will be outclassed in mobility by those that live down here. As long as we keep close to one another we can move to support one another in case of getting surrounded. How deep do you think the lake is here?"

The Shields get their water legs under them, grow accustomed to their new gear, and start down.

Zanderallen wonders how deep this part of the lake might be.

Stohp replies logically that the group will figure it out when the hit bottom.

After a couple minutes of straight down swimming, with no bottom yet in sight, the answer does appear to be “really deep”.

Bartomus picks up movement out of the corner of his eye.

The taur alerts the others, who all stop their descent.

Seven scaly humanoids, with long, fish-like tails also have paused in the water. Their arms and legs end in webbed claws, and their piscine heads feature a toothy maw. They have apparently just seen the party.

Stock moves ahead, in case they don’t. To be fair, ‘front’ and ‘back’ don’t have a lot of meaning in this environment, so he shouldn’t be so hard on himself.

Dorbin takes a ‘step’ and starts casting a spell.
DM assumes Dorbin is taking full round to cast spell, not swimming up behind Stock

Micah moves up while pulling out a wand, and casts Bless on the party.

Zanderallen also moves up. "We mean you no harm, we are looking for other humans that came down here." He does slip his shield into position ready to block should they fire.

Bartomus shifts position, and readies a spell.

Sid also shifts position, and readies his bow.

The sahaugin say nothing. Whether that is because they don’t understand common, or just don’t care, or both, remains to be seen.

With powerful strokes of their tails and legs, the sahaugin form up on line.
As Zanderallen feared earlier, they move through the water with breathless ease.

All seven raise their crossbows, and fire, triggering Bart’s ready action to cast Bulls Strength (on himself?), and Zanderallen’s ready action to get his shield up, and Sid’s ready action to fire his bow.

The elf’s arrow sails wide.

Stohp sighs and moves forward. She notes the crossbows are all of the heavy variety, making it unlikely the sahaugin will get off another shot before she can close.

Bart also moves forward.

Stock rushes forward, and slams his trident hard into #5.

Zanderallen points out the leader. The paladin also rushes forward, and also scores a hit with his trident.

Sid fires a volley at #1, hitting him once. He calls out in elven, to no effect.

Micah also rushes forward. He lunges at #3 with a spear, but the sahaugin dodges the blow.

Bartomus went swimming as quickly as he could towards one of the sharkmen who was attacking Micah. He tried jabbing the trident, but it went low and he found himself in a fight hoping that he would quickly get how to use the weapon in his hands.

Dorbin watches as the crossbows sink while he pulls his borrowed underwater crossbow around. He's familiar with the crossbow, so he's curious to see how this one fires underwater. He aims and pulls the trigger at target #7.

Sorry, my post went through one minute before the DM post! Hopefully you can add those actions, especially Phil's attack (but Phil actually missed). Based on where everyone else ended up, Dorbin would have stayed to R17 so he has cover from the big guys. Then he'd take a shot with the crossbow: d20+8=20, natural 20, threat roll: d20+8=22. I'm guessing from S5's AC that's not a hit. Damage: d8+3=10 (in case the 22 hits, crit damage is additional d8+3=9).

Phil would have ended up at Z11, I think. He would take a 5' step to AA11, working towards a flank, and attack again: d20+6=13 miss.

Dorbin summons a dolphin, which attacks #1, missing.

Bart moves to help Micah, but misses with his unfamiliar trident.

Stock rages up, and impales #5. The sahaugin shudders for one surprised moment, and then slips from the weapon to sink into the deep.

Dorbin changes his aim slightly, and fires at #6. This underwater crossbow works pretty well, as he scores a hit!

Phil, the magic dolphin, moves and attacks #1, missing.

Micah attacks, but cannot connect.

Zanderallen invokes the power of Domi. The Sahaugin are evil, so that works just fine.
The paladin strikes a deep blow.

Stohp moves up and tries to grapple #7, while also offering advice on proper communications.
The sahaugin slips free of the taur’s attempt.

Sid continues fire on #1, raining arrows over Zanderallen’s shoulders. The elf hits once more.

There is a lot of blood in the water around Zanderallen and the sahaugin, and the shark man appears to revel in it. His eyes roll back, he lets go of his trident, and with an inarticulate scream, he launches himself, tooth and claw onto the paladin.

Both claws and the bite find their mark. As both claws tear into the paladin, the sahaugin rips them downward, rending even more damage. And on top of that, the paladin feels a freezing pain as well.

He watched in horror as the creature nearly tore asunder Micah in front of him filling the water with a reddish hue. Then the sharp slashes crossed his back. He stabbed at the swimming beast that had tore into Micah. The trident found flesh.

Micah sees things are going poorly for the Shields, but realizes they are too spread out to reach with his healing aura. Bart misses on his AoO, and wonders aloud what caused the sahaugin to move away.

Stock and Stohp manage to bind the prisoner sahaugin. Their actions cause the fish man to wake up from Dorbin’s spell, but by that point it’s too late. He hangs limply in Stohp’s grip, staring forward.

Zanderallen keeps the leader’s body from sinking.
Sid comes over to assist searching the body, as well as #7.
He finds:

He reached into his pouch, and pulled out one of the corked vials he was carrying. He slipped it into his mouth and used his teeth to bite through the wax seal and work out the cork which his push asided into his cheek with his tongue as he swallowed the liquid. As he tried to spit out the cork, he swallowed the lake water. He felt his bleeding stop, but the potion didn't seem to do a lot make him feel better. He spit out the cork and vial letting them go their separate ways.

As he fiddled for another vial, he looked about at the others. "Maybe they left when the leader was killed?"

With some effort, he repeated the drill with a second vial and it had the same effect. "Must be the water or something."

Used 2 of CMW potions Bart has for 8 and 5 points...really bad rolls!

Dorbin shrugs at all the attention. "Well yeah, I guess I learned aquan a long time ago. I was hanging around the docks and kind of picked it up from some of the people and animals there. I didn't really know that no one else..."

He nods to Dorbin and explains to the creature in aquan that they don't mean it any harm. He tells it that they're just on an exploration mission and they don't want to kill anyone. They want to talk and help out some people who have been kidnapped. He translates for Sid and tries to explain the words he used.

He shakes his head in the negative when Sid asks for magic to convince the creature.

Micah inhales deeply in reaction to Dorbin's translation. He then pauses a moment to reflect on the oddity that his deep breath was all water. He pulls out a cloth and covers the fish man's eyes, then tells the others to move away before saying anything else.

Once they have regathered, he continues, "Zanderallen's correct. They are all on alert now. I propose we dive and see if we can find cover on the bottom. They dropped their crossbows as if they thought they would be easy to recover." Putting action behind his words, he starts swimming down, continue to use the wand of curing on anyone who needs it.

"So do we just keep going down, and hope that the next welcoming party is something that is friendly? Stohp points out that the prisoner understands, but isn’t cooperating.

After a brief discussion, the Shields tie him up, blindfold him, and leave him to his own devices.

Micah leads the way down. The sahaugin is last seen propelling itself eastward, while working to loosen its bonds.

After another 250’ the Shields reach the bottom of the lake.
This particular section is mostly sand, and the two sahaugin bodies, seven heavy crossbows, the leader’s trident, and most of Sid’s arrows are easily found.

When they came to the bottom, Bartomus looked about. There was a stand of swaying kelp off in the distance. He looked and it seemed to him that there was light coming from that area as well, which was odd as it was in the north.

"I think we might need to go through the forest that way to find the City we are looking for. Do we think that the Sahagin would be part of that, or maybe they were concerned that we were going call out the merfolk?"

He picked up the leader's trident and compared it with the one he was lent. Eyeing it to see if it was of any value, but he didn't know anything about tridents and shrugged.

"Should we take this with us?" He asked aloud.

Sahaugin, "/b] Replies Micah to Stohp, [b]"He took them Briadoc to help with their food issue to aid them in their plan to control the lake."

Micah takes a look at the map [not sure who has it]. "Is that light the Merfolk city or a sahaugin settlement? I think we should go to the merfolk. We're not taking on an entire camp by ourselves. If we can convince them of the sahuagin threat. They should be willing to provide some aid."

Micah then casts [i]detect magic[/b] to check out the leader's trident. If it is magic, he has no clue as to what its enchantment might be.

"I think we should take the Trident anyway. Besides, it might have sentimental meaning for someone. Guys, I'm going to start scouting forward a little bit if that's alright." Assuming they agree, after he gets his arrows he will move a hundred feet forward and see what he can see.

The leader’s trident turns out to be masterwork, but not magical.

There is a brief discussion in which the group recalls previously learned information. Peerimon was with the Sahaugin. And the Sahaugin were enemies of the Merfolk. Leading to the sensible conclusion that finding some merfolk might be a good idea.

The kelp beds, and the lights beyond, beckon.

Sid leads the way, and the rest of the Shields follow.

As Sid gets within about 60’ of the kelp bed, he notices several creatures are moving about, evidently tending to the kelp plants. From the torso up, they appear elven, and from the torso down is a fish tail.

As of yet, they have not seen Sid, nor the rest of the group.

As Sid swims forward, Micah moves close to Dorbin. "What do you think about casting your message cantrip to keep in touch with Sid?"

He takes a last look at the fallen, especially the leader, for tokens or badges of office, tribe, or race, hoping to find something they could provide as evidence to they merfolk that the Shields have already fought, and defeated, their enemies.

Bartomus followed along with the the others. He felt a more familiar feeling to their location as it was similar to the plains where he had spent most of his life - but for the air being solid water and their having to swim. But, rock, sand, grasses and plants swaying back and forth had more commonalities with the land of his upbringing than the constant vibrant flow of people and things in the Float.

As they approached the tall kelp grove with its plants stretching towards the far off light of the sun, he looked at the stand of swaying green and the movements that caught his attention.

Ever observant, Stock's eyes pan left and right as they approach the kelp beds. "I wonder how much Briardoc likes working down here. On the downside, I'm sure he didn't appreciate getting kidnapped. Then again, he's seemed as the bookish type and may appreciate whatever kind of a challenge they are having..."

Glad to have ground underneath him again Zanderallen keeps looking above them, waiting for another sahaugin patrol to dive down on them. "I feel so exposed with the expanse of the lake above us."

Sid watches them for a moment and slowly makes his way back to the group. "They seem to be Sea-Elves or Merfolk, I'm not sure as the stories and ledgends I've read seem to conflate the two. They might listen to me if they see my face but," he says knocking his helmet a bit "they won't see Elf first I think and I don't know what they speak. If you want I can sneak up and Dorbin can give me a few simple phrases I can see if they are friendly. And if not, there's always plan Running and Screaming.

"Yeah well it's no different from being outside with aerial foes around. Consider that if we ever get a mission not in the float or forest." Stohp comments. Being a Taur, even a small one, she's one of the tallest of the group. Rather than craning her neck and trying to look ahead though she's focused on keeping down an out of sight in case this is a Sahagin kelp field (19 for stealth)
