The Temple

[Everybody take 26,000 XP for the previous scene.]

In the morning, you have a Heroes' Feast (don't forget to roll temp HP!) before setting out.

You talk about quicker means of transportation, but in the end decide to just walk. Accordingly, you cross the river and head back into the jungle.

[OOC: It's not going to matter here, but for future reference, there's nothing in the Find the Path spell description about knowing how long it will take to reach the goal. You just know direction.]

Shortly after crossing the river, you come upon what you think is an ancient road. Following it, you arrive at the ruined temple about mid-morning.

Kezzem chows down on heroes' breakfast. Nom nom nom nom.

Temp HP: 1d8 + 7 = 14.

One other item: Every morning Murphy casts greater magic fang on Mookie, and Bliss typically extends it out to last, what, 27 hours? It gives Mookie a +3 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls throughout the day. He also will cast it upon himself just as he goes to explore the old temple site.

"Beautiful building. Very old. Worn down. I'll join you up there, Mooks. Anyone else?" He changes into a hawk (like the Harris hawk), and flies up, over, crisscrossing the area with Mookie to get a good overview of the layout of the temple grounds. Also, he looks to discern if there are other animals - or people. And, how far does the temple area spread out? Are there obvious entrances, windows, etc.?

He watche for potential predators, frequently glancing up and around, and listening for subtle changes in the sound of the air round about, or a sudden change in air pressure. He wants to avoid being struck from above by, say, well, anything! But he also takes the time when he seems to be in the clear to absorb the sights around this site.

He telepathically communicates with Pressi to let her know what he is seeing.

On returning, he catches up his friends on some of the details, but points out on the building they stand before, "Looks like that may be one of the entrances to this place. Shall we enter?"

When you reach the temple, many of you are still thinking of breakfast, which was indeed delicious.

Now, Mookie flies up to take a look, joined by Murphy in bird form. You can't identify any "grounds" other than the temple itself. If it had a landscaped garden area, it is long since reclaimed by the jungle. The temple itself is not especially large, and the only entrance you see is the front entrance where you arrived.

Succotash keeps an eye on the surrounding jungle, but doesn't see anything untoward. You are not able to identify any of the iconography on the temple--which is a little unexpected, because it's not like you don't know this stuff. But you're pretty sure you've never seen these symbols before. Maybe you've seen something similar....? But you can't put your finger on it.

As Murphy says, your path seems to lead straight ahead and into the building.

Stuff from morning ... Bliss and Mookie go through their post-breakfast buffing. Threefold aspect and Extended Barkskin on both of them. He is happy for the GMF from Murphy, but it goes to Bliss not Mookie. And he tries a couple new things. Bliss casts Spite, and Bestow Curse with it.The next enemy that hits Bliss will have to make a DC17 Will save or suffer a -4 on attacks, saves, and other rolls!

Before you enter the temple, Pressi casts some spells and checks for traps. The trouble with trying to see inside the temple from outside the temple is that the light in the jungle is pretty bright and there doesn't seem to be a lot of light inside the temple. Looking from a brightly-lit area into a dimly-lit area is challenging. All Pressi can be sure of is that there are not traps immediately inside the entrance. You really can't see much further back.

Kezzem detects for evil but finds none.

As you move into the temple, Succotash casts Light on Valerie's pink bow, which helps illuminate the interior for the group.

Bliss's Dancing Lights give further illumination. Bliss also intends to cast Prying Eyes, but may change his mind once he sees the interior.

Murphy remains in hawk form.

When you step into the temple, you find yourselves in a single large room. The floor is flat stones fitted together--the kind of floor that is ideal for hiding traps, though Pressi assures you there aren't any. Yet. Opposite the entrance is a massive set of bronze double doors. Flanking the doors are two statues. The statues are black in color and humanoid in appearance, but somewhat stylized. Their outlines are blocky; the heads have no faces, and the overall effect is somewhat crude. One holds a sword; the other holds a hammer.

Bliss can cast his Prying Eyes if he wants, but the eyes really won't have anywhere to go until you get those doors open.

Bliss does cast the Prying Eyes spell. It lasts for 12 hours, so they can just float around until he needs them.

He says to his friends, "Hold on a sec everybody!" He turns off his shield, casts around for some bugs -- centipedes, spiders, or scorpions. If he finds any, he casts Giant Vermin.

"Let these guys enter first, so if the statues animate and attack, they go for the bugs."

He sends his new vermin pals in toward the statues. And then puts his shield back on and changes into a cat.

[OOC: Kindly DM, is this a chamber (roofed) or a courtyard? If it is roofed, does it look like it goes all the way up, based on the roof we flew over from the outside, or might there be a chamber above the ceiling?]

Bliss casts his Prying Eyes, but puts them on standby, and starts looking around for bugs to embiggen. You find lots and lots--pretty much anything you want. The room does have a ceiling, and it looks to be the right height for the roof you saw. You don't think there's extra space up there.

Kezzem draws his construct-bane sword, because it seems like a good idea.

To Succotash's appraising eye, the statues look like they could be some kind of golem. Of course, they're not moving or anything, so maybe they're just statues after all.

Hobie casts some spells, and Tali provides the group with yet another light source.

Here is a map of the room. Please adjust your position. Cayzle, please add Bliss's giant bugs, and put them where you want them. Let me know if there are questions.

Of course, this is just a map. It's not a combat map, because we are not in combat. Those statues are completely motionless. Yep. Not moving at all. Nope. Not a bit.

Per the spell, Bliss makes three giant spiders. (Bliss has had an affinity for spiders since he got his Cloak of Arachnida.)

He sees the not-golems and has a funny feeling about this. So he and his spiders take to the wall, climbing up to the ceiling. He calls down, "Hey everybody! Get up here out of statue reach before we give them a poke."

Who cannot fly or scale the wall? Bliss can send a spider-pal to carry you up. They're furry!

When everybody is up out of reach, Bliss sends a spider over to the statues to attack. Are there any handholds for clinging up here? Crown molding, maybe?

Bliss, Mookie, and Spiders are on the map, but exactly overhead on the ceiling.

[Four times thwarted from posting here in last two days, due to ... interruptions. Meanwhile, this is what I had planned to do.]

Murphy casts longstrider - so he can hop on the ground as a bird as fast as possible. No, not that. He will not likely remain in this form too long.

It wasn't really settled who was carrying the keys, but let's say Hobie, as he is the last one to examine them closely. "Hobes. We've got three keys. You've checked them in detail. So have I. How about I go check out the door more closely, and see if by the shape of the opening, I might figure which key is the one to use? You hang on to it. I'll let you know - maybe right after one of those things tries to slam me into the door with a hammer, or slap me with a sword. Or maybe they'll figure I'm a bird, and let me be."

But before he flies anywhere near them, he casts stoneskin - before Bliss has his spiders poke anything.

"Want to see what happens if I fly over by the door first?" Murphy asks Bliss. "Or just land on the shoulder one of the statues?" If Bliss concurs, he lands on the shoulder of the statue with the sword - ready to dodge aside briskly should it make a move. The shoulder closest to the door, that is.

(Oy, sorry for flaking yesterday.)

Pressi considers the puzzle before her. Even "use the keys" seems somewhat pat.

She looks to see if there are any symbols on the keys, and tries to study the golems and doors at a distance (Disable Device 27, Perception 29+1 for traps). It occurs to her that they might need to be used on the statues rather than the door. Or that they might need to think about what the hammer and sword represent. (Strike the sword with a hammer? Or is this another ancient god thing?)

Pressi volunteers to go instead of Murphy. "You probably need a thief more than a healer at this point. Or an animal." To Bliss' warning, being the bug is kind of my job.

As the bugs move towards the golems, Pressi casts Blink on herself and sends Harper back. "Ok, here goes nothing."

She moves forward until she spots or sets off a trap, or until the golems move. If she reaches the golems, she uses Lore Keeper on one of them (Touch Attack 18).

Succotash casts Air Walk on Valerie and mounts up.

Murphy casts Longstrider and Stoneskin.

Hobie readies an arrow.

Pressi studies the area. You see a keyhole in the door. It seems to be just for the door, though. You don't see any keyhole that might belong to the statues. Maybe one of them is standing in front of it?

Knowledge: Arcana CR 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { If these are golems, they are constructs animated by a magical spirit of some kind. Since they are not purely mechanical, it is unlikely that they were designed to be controlled by purely mechanical means such as a key. Which doesn't help much, since you don't know how they are controlled.}

Tali sends her Unseen Servant closer, while Bliss sends his spiders. That does prompt a reaction. Both statues come to life! One of them smashes its sword down on one of the spiders! The spider takes 36 points of damage. The other smashes its hammer down on the same spider! The spider takes another 35 damage.

Tactical info: These are 15-foot creatures with 15-foot reach. Staying 10 feet away is going to get you pulverized; just saying. The ceiling is 20 feet high. So it is possible to fly above the creatures, but you don't have a lot of room for fancy maneuvers.

Spider Poked and Smashed

Tali tries to determine the type of arcana used to create the Statues; {Skill Check: Knowledge Arcana: 26} & learns about the statues, mumbling to herself as if this knowledge was a secret: If these are golems, they are constructs animated by a magical spirit of some kind. Since they are not purely mechanical, it is unlikely that they were designed to be controlled by purely mechanical means such as a key. Which doesn't help much, since you don't know how they are controlled.

Tali seeing the creatures animate and crush the poor spider flies to the ceiling to avoid their reach. Once, there, she removes the Wand of Stoneskin and casts one charge onto herself. If no one would like a casting of Stoneskin, Tali puts the wands away into her front pocket.

Hobie's shot does go off, and does a bit of damage. It also casts an Obscuring Mist.

[I placed the mist on the map.]

Murphy believes the golems are made of adamantine.

Tali gains some altitude and casts Stoneskin from a wand.

Bliss fires a shot, but is foiled by the mist.

Kezzem shouts some insults, approaches the golems, and goes full defensive.

Succotash begins summoning. His T-Rex will show up next round.

Pressi tumbles forward, looking for some information. You learn that these are adamantine golems, and that they can sunder armor or shields on a critical hit.

The golems attack! One attacks Pressi, hitting twice, once critically. Pressi takes a total of 113 damage. Pressi's armor takes 54 points of damage. [Yes, I rolled a miss chance due to Blink.]

The other golem moves to get out of the mist. [The T-rex isn't there yet, so the move makes sense.]

OOC: I am assuming that Pressi would take 113 - 54 = 59 points of damage, half of which gets transfered to Kezzem (i.e., 30 damage with Pressi taking the remaining 29).

Kezzem makes his way out of the mist and strikes with his +1 adamantine construct-bane short short sword.

Attack: 1d20 + 21 + 2 (bane) = 33 + 2 = 35.
Damaage: 1d4 + 4 + 2d6 (bane) = 8 + 5 (bane) = 13.

As soon as Murphy has the keys, he will fly into the fog, toward the spot on the door where he saw the keyhole, and try each key in turn.

Adamantine Golems

Tali directs her glowing unseen servant to drag Pressi out of the fight if she is prone and not moving. In the meantime, Tali will cast Haste on everyone within 60 feet that are no more than 30 feet apart!

Haste

When making a full-attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with one natural or manufactured weapon. The attack is made using the creature’s full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a speed weapon, nor does it actually grant an extra action, so you can’t use it to cast a second spell or otherwise take an extra action in the round.)

A hasted creature gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. Any condition that makes you lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes you lose dodge bonuses.

All of the hasted creature’s modes of movement (including land movement, burrow, climb, fly, and swim) increase by 30 feet, to a maximum of twice the subject’s normal speed using that form of movement. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects the creature’s jumping distance as normal for increased speed. Multiple haste effects don’t stack. Haste dispels and counters slow.

Succotash who has been riding Valerie as she air walks above the heads of the golems (mentioned in one of last weeks post, after Bliss suggested getting above their heads) would make trampling difficult, unless I missed something, but at Murphy’s suggestion, Succotash directs Valerie towards the door, exiting the building, as a withdrawal action, to avoid an AoA. (70ft per round movement speed) As he departs he says, “I hope that works, nothing I have in my arsenal seems to have any affect!”

Meanwhile Mr Rex will lash out at the golem that slammed it, hitting AC 31 for 45 slashing, piercing, and Bludgeoning damage.

OOC... My laptop is currently in the backseat of the car my wife took to spend the week with her daughter. Please bare with me as I am posting from my phone this week. Could someone move Succotash and Valerie out of the temple as per my post, on the map, I can’t seem to be able to with this device.

"What gives is that this thing has DR against anything but epic," Pressi shouts back, "and its immune to magic so hope you brought a backup two handed weapon. Everyone take to the skies or get the pets out of the way."

Harper considers dodging, but Pressi signals that he has some chance to do damage - and no chance to dodge. (I need a ruling in regards to AoO and Multiattack.)

(AOO - attack roll 36, damage 8, trip roll 30).

With that, Harper books it away (Acro Roll 21) to where Pressi is. (If Harper's HP drops to below 20, Pressi uses a hero point to Cure Critical Harper for 47 HP).

Pressi scrambles to think of what to do. She had plenty of steps to fly, but range attacks? The only thing she could think of that could beat immunity to magic AND that DR would be....

Pressi signals to Murphy. "Aim on me," she shouts to Murphy as she begins to transform (her spell firing just in the nick of time). "Aim the spell on me. It'll be ok... I'm not wearing metal. Kezzem, Succotash, get the hell out of the way."

Slowly, she rises out of the mist towards the ceiling, in between both golems (and 40 feet away from Hobie), her black, scaly wings making wind through the area.

"Hello, boys," she roars.

Once Murphy is certain that others who wear or use metal are at least 40' away from her, he himself flies back to the entrance, then casts transmute metal to wood (DC36) centered upon Dragon Pressi, as she requested. He is impressed with his fiancée. Again, he advises all to get 40' or farther away from Pressi before he casts. If they wear or use no metal, then it is not important where they may be.

Tali puts a Wall of Force around the purple golem. [I assume this reaches all the way to the ceiling?]

Bliss tries again, but cannot penetrate the golem's armor. This thing is tough!

Hobie needs to switch targets, because his original target is enclosed in a Wall of Force. He hits three times, once critically.

Kezzem cures himself.

Succotash withdraws. His T-Rex attacks, but can't get through the golem's armor.

Harper's attack of opportunity is good enough to hit, but the damage doesn't get through, and the trip attempt is unsuccessful. He returns to Pressi, who turns into a dragon. The effect is somewhat spoiled by the fact that you're inside an Obscuring Mist and nobody can see you.

Murphy casts Transmute Metal to Wood, one of the few spells that can affect these things. You want to center it on Pressi, but you can't see her. You can center it in her general area, though. It affects everything within 40 feet, so that's going to include Kezzem unless he heeded Murphy's earlier warning and got out of range. [Because today's DM post is so late, I'll let you retcon yourself out of the area if you need to.]

As your DM reads the spell, and the monster entry, this can't actually transmute the golems to wood, but it can slow them down, and change their resistance to 15/adamantine, which will probably help.

Tali can cast her spell next round if she wants, but keep in mind these things were not changed to wood, and they're still immune to magic.

The purple golem is inside a Wall of Force, so it was unaffected by the Transmute spell. It begins hammering on the Wall of Force, trying to batter its way out. It actually manages to damage the wall a little bit, but it'll take time to pound its way out of there.

The other golem targets the T-Rex. It hits for 53 damage.

Everyone keep in mind that the ceiling is 20 feet high. These things are 15 feet high with a 15-foot reach. You can stay out of their reach, but if they get directly beneath you, they can hit you.

And the map.

EFFECT

Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect wall whose area is up to one 10-ft. square/level
Duration 1 round /level (D)
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

DESCRIPTION

A wall of force creates an invisible wall of pure force. The wall cannot move and is not easily destroyed. A wall of force is immune to dispel magic, although a mage’s disjunction can still dispel it. A wall of force can be damaged by spells as normal, except for disintegrate, which automatically destroys it. It can be damaged by weapons and supernatural abilities, but a wall of force has hardness 30 and a number of hit points equal to 20 per caster level. Contact with a sphere of annihilation or rod of cancellation instantly destroys a wall of force.

Breath weapons and spells cannot pass through a wall of force in either direction, although dimension door, teleport, and similar effects can bypass the barrier. It blocks ethereal creatures as well as material ones (though ethereal creatures can usually circumvent the wall by going around it, through material floors and ceilings). Gaze attacks can operate through a wall of force.

The caster can form the wall into a flat, vertical plane whose area is up to one 10-foot square per level. The wall must be continuous and unbroken when formed. If its surface is broken by any object or creature, the spell fails.

Bliss tries again, but still can't score a hit on the golem.

Succotash casts some protections on Valerie and sends her into battle, but her teeth don't quite penetrate the golem's armor. Neither do the teeth of the T-Rex.

Pressi the dragon shoots a line of acid at the golem. [I don't need an attack roll, but I do need a Reflex save DC.] The golem takes some damage.

Murphy casts Call Lightning Storm.

Kezzem tries to tumble past the golem, but doesn't quite manage. The Attack of Opportunity hits, and does 37 damage. You stab the golem, and hit! [They actually can be critted, so give me updated damage in your next post.]

Tali wraps yet another Wall of Force around the purple golem. She calls to her teammates to try to isolate the other golem so that it, too, can be contained.

Hobie keeps firing. He is close enough to provoke an Attack of Opportunity, which hits. Hobie takes 41 points of damage. And then his arrows hit. The golem stops moving. A few parts fall off. It slumps, inactive.

Of course, Pressi can tell you that it isn't "dead," not really. It's going to continue to heal itself. However, you have several hours before it's going to become an issue.

The purple golem is effectively neutralized. Yes, it's going to batter its way out of those Walls of Force eventually, but that's going to take time. For now, you are free to explore the temple.

Adamantine Golems -- stalled

Tali realizing the danger at hand has past encapsulates the disabled Red Golem in two (2) layers of Walls of Force while she has the chance, to resemble that of the Purple Golem's crypt!

Shouting aloud, "Humbles, please drop the mist!" shouts Tali. Tali removes the goggles from her head and places them back into her front pocket. "Perhaps, we should make haste in trying to find another way deeper into the Temple," suggests Tali!

Overland Flight - 830of 900 Minutes
Unseen servant - 900 of 900 Minutes

Heroes Feast

You bring forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink. The feast takes 1 hour to consume, and the beneficial effects do not set in until this hour is over. Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all sickness and nausea, receives the benefits of both neutralize poison and remove disease and gains 1d8 temporary hit points + 1 point per two caster levels (maximum +10) after imbibing the nectar-like beverage that is part of the feast. The ambrosial food grants each creature that partakes a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against poison and fear effects for 12 hours.

Knowing the golem will eventually rebuild itself, Murphy calls down a few lightning bolts.

Not to be outdone, Tali encases it in Walls of Force. She calls again for the Obscuring Mist to be dispelled.

The Obscuring Mist was created by an item, specifically an arrow from Hobie. Your DM isn't sure whether effects created by items can even be dispelled, but if they can, Hobie would have to be the one to do it. However, the mist isn't completely blocking the doors, and you can still see the keyhole. Hobie is busy healing himself at the moment.

Kezzem also has some healing for Hobie.

Succotash dismisses his T-Rex and heads for the doors, where Bliss and Pressi are already studying the keyhole. Pressi detects no traps on the keyhole or the door.

Moving things forward a bit, then, you get your keys and try them on the door. The first two don't work, and you're starting to get a bit worried, but the last key fits perfectly and turns with a satisfying "CHONK." The double doors swing open.

Beyond them, you see another room, a bit larger than the one you're standing in now. Like this room, it has stone walls, a stone ceiling, and a floor of fitted stone tiles. On the other side of the room, opposite the double doors, you see a stone altar.

Perception DC 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {There is a keyhole on the wall, near the doors. It can't be for the doors; they have their own keyhole. This keyhole is for something else.}

Perception DC 32 Highlight to display spoiler: { There's a trap on the floor over there. Oh, there's another one over there. Oh, and another one. Holy Cow, this place is riddled with traps!}

Murphy flits above the floor, and indicates each and every trap he is able to discern [Perception: 56]. He looks along the walls, too, and ceiling, seeing if he can spot various aspects of the traps which riddle the room. If there are traps that are triggered by birds flying in the middle of the room, then surely he has set off several more traps. He looks for and finds a tile that does not appear to be trapped, and lands upon it. "Yep, I'm surrounded by traps. Maybe we can deliberately set several off from a distance. Or simply take care to only step on the safe tiles."

If someone wants to try to do so, Murphy signals which ones appear to be safe to tread upon.

Still, she remains confident in reminding the group that she IS capable of disabling traps. (OK, so she's not maxed ranks or even fully human for the moment. She could certainly give it a try, and she's insulted you didn't ask.)

(Oh, and she uses a CCW to heal Harper back up. From what I can tell, Pressi can still cast spells in dragon form as long as they don't require material components. She casts detect magic on the far altar.)

"That said, has anyone considered the ping pong method? You know, throw a bunch of whatevers in there and just set off all the traps at once for a few minutes? It won't necessarily disable the traps, but it's always cool."

Regarding Kezzem, "Let me do it. I'm still blinking, I can cast protect elements on myself, I can fly and manipulate small tools... oh, and I can apparently swim if the room fills with water."

Bliss warns the group that the room is trapped! There are traps everywhere!

Kezzem remarks that he isn't very good at disabling them anymore, but does point to a keyhole in the wall. Maybe that is a way to disable the traps?

Murphy offers to point out which are the safe tiles, and suggests that someone try the keyhole.

Succotash worries that the keyhole may be trapped, and suggests trying it from a distance.

Pressi suggests using Mage Hand to try the key, or possibly Unseen Servant. Or, failing that, she could just try a key herself, since her Blink is still active.

Hobie, after dismissing the Obscuring Mist, tries to trigger some traps by shooting at them. In general, they seem to want a bit more pressure than what you're able to simulate with an arrow, but you do manage to set one of them off. When your arrow hits, a veritable hail of arrows comes flying from a nearby wall, bursting through the trapped area and continuing until they clatter to the floor.

Murphy can tell you that the square is still trapped. That is, setting off the traps does not neutralize them; they reset.

Pressi is able to try the remaining keys in the keyhole; the second one she tries fits into the keyhole and turns with another "CHONK."

Murphy decides to resume the halfling form his parents gave him. "Looks like an early answer to what we sought," he says, "as that certainly looks like a talisman to me. At the base - is that a sort of knife blade? Maybe chipped from flint, I'd guess. Weirdly artistic, frilly."

He says, "Let me take a few minutes to document this altar and the talisman. Anyone want to check to see if there are any secret or concealed doors or compartments elsewhere in this room? Or maybe under the altar?" The amateur artist pulls out his art supplies, and begins to draw what he sees, using his engineering skills to ensure accuracy of scale and proportion. He makes multiple drawings to cover all the sides of the altar. He sketches the room, marking the entrapped tiles, showing the keyhole that disarms them. He'd love to get inside the walls, and come to understand the mechanisms used for the traps. Maybe after his is done with his drawings, he can do so.

"I wonder if there is a finite supply of arrows, or if there is ancient magic at work, somehow replenishing the supply as needed? Anyone care to figure that one out?" he asks. "Oh, and again, Kezzem - well done. You have a genius for additional things I was unaware of until now."

Pressi transforms out of her dragon state. "Ok, lets get to it."

Regardless of whether Succotash can repair the armor (she has some doubts), she takes the minute while everyone is exploring to shed it, changing into her only backup outfit (her entertainers outfit). (Wait, is this why these temple stories always have women exploring them in scanty outfits? One more round against the adamantium golems and Pressi would be in high heels too.)

(I'm beginning to think I've put more thought into this than the Indy series has.)

Under Murphy's suggestion, she and Harper take a look around the rest of the room, including where she inserted the key and at some of the arrow traps. As of yet, she doesn't have any particular suggestion about the talisman, but the temple hasn't exactly grown on her in terms of "good base" options. Plus they'd probably need to hire a receptionist just to keep turning away confused adventurers and salesmen.

Murphy sketches the altar and the talisman for posterity.

Bliss casts Detect Magic and examines the talisman. The results are--inconclusive. There does seem to be a very, very faint Divine aura about the thing, but you're not sure what it does. If it does anything. It might just be sacred.

Kezzem is his usual jokester self.

Tali dons the Robe of Eyes and has a look around. You don't see anything you didn't see before.

Succotash casts Detect Magic and looks at the goblets, but they are not magical. Perhaps they were used in some ritual or other, or perhaps they're just wealth accumulated by whoever built the temple. Whatever they were for, they're yours now!

Pressi discards her shredded armor in favor of something more fanservice-y. Much is made clear.

Hobie plays--er, experiments--with the same trap he set off earlier. Thus far, it has not run out of arrows.

Many of you have this vague feeling that, somehow, there ought to be more to this place. Something you're missing. Something hidden. One by one, you begin to realize at least part of the reason you're thinking this way. You were given a ring of three keys. You have used two of them.

What's the third key for?

How about if a couple join me in the search, hit the fallen golem a few more times to ensure it stays down, and see how Tali's Box is faring."

He goes with who chooses to accompany him, first checks on the two golems. If they are basically as before, he, adds some lightning strikes to the guy who is down, and encourages others to bash it further. Assuming the other big fella is not about to burst his enclosure, Murphy begins searching high, mid and low for another keyhole - not only by sight, but also by touch.

That's a 59 on perception for Murphy. DM Kathy, feel free to make additional rolls for the druid if one is not enough.

Because if we have the keys and the traps remain set, I can't help but think we've walked into a bigger trap than a bunch of arrows.

"Speaking of, I think I felt a presence in regards to the golems, like something was controlling them. I assumed it was the temple itself, but I can't confirm that. Maybe it's time to hit a detect thoughts on those things."

If Murphy insists on checking the first room again, Pressi chooses to follow. First, she takes a look outside to make sure nobody is waiting just outside the front door for them. Second, she scans the room with "detect thoughts," trying to tap into what's controlling the golems. Third, she starts detecting magic on the walls themselves, seeing if anything pops out.

Now that he has access to the ruined armor, Succotash spends some time fixing it. It does take a while, but he is able to do it eventually.

Pressi asks whether the three keys might fit together somehow.

You examine the keys, and it doesn't look like they're going to fit together.

Bliss is in favor of resting so that spells can be prepared and cast.

Murphy wants another look at the outer room, and Pressi goes with him. The golems are still encased in their Walls of Force. The one golem is still battering at its first wall. The other golem, the one you guys kicked to the curb, has not yet healed itself. Murphy looks, but doesn't see a keyhole on either golem, or in the area outside the temple.

Pressi casts Detect Thoughts, trying to hone in on a presence she believes she felt. [Your DM did not mean to give you the impression that there was any kind of presence in the room. There really isn't.] You detect your companions, and your companions' animals, but nothing else.

Since you have a bit of time, you put your heads together to discuss what you know about golems. [If you're skimming the DM post, looking for your name, I'll tag this for everybody.] Golems are mindless automatons consisting of an artificial body merged with some kind of elemental, usually an earth elemental. Golems obey the commands of their creator. If their creator is not present, they will continue carrying out their most recent command for as long as they are able. For example, these golems' creator may have said, "stand here and attack anyone who approaches this door."

In the absence of the golems' creator, is there any way to control them? You don't know. There may be one, and the creator may have shared this information with trusted confederates, but you don't have access to it. Whatever is used to control them, it is unlikely to be something as purely mechanical as a key. It's probably something more mystical and woo-woo than that.

Hobie offers a Stone Shape to help uncover they keyhole, if somebody can figure out where it is.

Tali, still in the Robe of Eyes begins looking for one, first at ground level, then higher up.

Kezzem closes his eyes and gives it some thought. He's not one of the great thinkers of the group, but everyone has their moments. Alternatively, you're sitting in a temple; maybe it's divine inspiration. For whatever reason, Kezzem realizes something. The inside of the temple matches the outside. You know what's in both rooms. There's no extra keyhole here.

If there's more to this temple, it's got to be underground. Right beneath your feet.

Kezzem suggests that Hobie use his Stone Shape to make a way into the basement. Murphy offers to turn into an earth elemental for much the same purpose.

Succotash and Bliss examine the area. Succotash's eyes move over the traps, now disabled, that are all over the floor in the altar room. Most of them follow the same two designs, repeated over and over and over throughout the room. But there's one, in the dead center of the room....now that he looks at it, Succotash can tell that it's different from the others. It covers a larger area, for one thing. And--is it a pit trap? It does seem like it might open somehow.

Bliss, sniffing around nearby, smells--well, not fresh air. Different air. Cooler, damper air, associated with the large central trap.

Pressi would appear to have figured it out. One of the stones in the floor is indeed intended to open to a space below. But--do you have to deliberately set off that trap in order to get down there? That would mean turning on all the traps, which doesn't seem especially safe. Of course, now that you know where the opening is, you have ways to push through it that don't necessarily involve using the trap itself.

Bliss points out the right spot in the floor, then turns back into a cat.

Tali looks for a different entrance. It's ridiculous to think you access the basement by deliberately triggering a trap. But, that looks to be the only way down. Anyway, you aren't seeing anything else.

Murphy turns into an earth elemental, and sticks his head through the stone to take a look. You see the mechanism of the trap. It looks as if the floor drops away, and a metal chute takes its place, so that people slide into the basement. You look carefully, but see nothing that would hurt anybody. Slide into the basement; that's it.

The rest of the group discuss the improbability of an earth elemental being able to penetrate solid rock. "A wizard did it" is a possible theory. You could also go with, "forget it, Kezzem. It's Magictown."

When you receive your report from Murphy, you have a couple of options. You could turn the traps back on, navigate to the one you want (you can avoid the other traps), and set it off. Or, you could ask Hobie to just make you an entrance and then lower a rope or something.

"Right, so, we retrigger the traps, step on the center square, then go weeeeee! all the way down. Want me to go first, and score the metal so as to give following people metal slivers on the way down? Or someone else go first? Then to the rest of the party he says, “Since the traps are all pressure sensitive, a nice safe way to open the hatch would be for either Tali, or Valerie, and myself to fly/air walk over and then trigger the hatch. That way there is no way to accidentally trigger death”.

Temple Basement

Upon rejoining her squadmates inside the temple, Tali orders her glowing unseen servant to descent into the hole in the floor to illuminate the basement area. A few minutes afterwards, Tali herself descends into the hole still wearing the Robe of Many eyes in order to get a better understanding of what is actually down there! Every 5 feet downward in her descent, she will check for what can be perceived assuming the depth is the same as the temple above, and therefore four (4) perception checks will be made:

"I mean, its not as insane as I might make it sound, because presumably our previous homeowners went down there, too, somehow. But... yeah, I would say a safety rope might be ideal."

Pressi doesn't have much of a thought as to how to go down there, except that her blink is gone. She'd rather not set off the trap, noting not just the danger but that it's unnecessary. (Since they just need to remove the plate - brute force should do the trick just fine.) She's willing to hang back this time around.

"So long as one of the tiles adjacent to this center tile is untrapped, why, I can just press down on it, and let people descend as they choose." Murphy says. "I can hold a rope at the same time. Now, someone give me a rope - two ropes tied together, in case it goes farther than fifty feet." Once someone gives him a pair of linked ropes, he kneels on a safe adjacent tile, holds the rope, and waits as people, or invisible servants, or magical hands descend to look around. Once everyone is down, and he has heard a report of what it is like, he gives warning to watch out below, and slides down himself. So long as he fits. If he does not fit, then he will see about earth gliding outside the slide, following it until he gets to the end, then cautiously emerging near his friends.

Murphy is pretty sure that, at his present size, he's not going to fit through the trapdoor and down the slide. A large-sized creature would probably fit, but huge is going to be too big.

Tali examines the area with her Robe of Many Eyes, but sees nothing she didn't see before. The trap has not yet been sprung, so it just looks like floor at this point.

Bliss wants to spider-climb down the slide, and Pressi wants to use a safety rope. Hobie volunteers to go first, no equipment necessary.

Kezzem was promised puppies, darn it!

Some clarification: the trap opens a trap-door and drops the slide into place. Right now, the slide is not below the opening; it is being held up near the ceiling of the space below. Going through the trapped stone without setting off the trap will lead you into the space below, but will probably not drop the slide into place. You'll need a rope or something.

When Murphy looked earlier, with darkvision and a pretty good Perception check, he didn't see anything that would be harmful to anyone. So, while there may not be actual bunnies, there probably aren't sharks with frickin' laser beams either.

Really, it's a question of how you want to do this. You can cautiously create an opening and slowly and carefully descend by rope, making Perception checks all the way, or you can throw caution to the winds, set off the trap, and slide down the slide.

Pressi hands Murphy some rope. By throwing it at the back of his head. Still counts.

Since everyone seems to be interested in the trap, Pressi uses mage hand to manipulate the keys, turning the traps back on.

Murphy is getting frustrated. He needs rope, but his backpack has melded with his current form, somewhere near his left hip. And even if he could get to it, he doesn't exactly have fingers at the moment. He calls for help from his companions.

Pressi obliges him by throwing a rope at the back of his head. She uses Mage Hand to re-arm the traps.

Tali suggests an Unseen Servant for the slide trap, but Hobie is eager to try it out! Hobie triggers the trap! You drop through the trapdoor and land on the metal slide, which itself has only just dropped into position. The space below the floor is dark, and soon you are rushing down a slide, though the darkness, toward an uncertain fate. You're pretty sure there's nothing down here to hurt you, and you've prepared contingencies just in case, so it's not that scary. You can imagine, though, that unexpectedly setting off this trap could be terrifying. Your slide ends with a bump, and then you are sitting in a pitch-dark room.

Succotash and Valerie head down the slide at a more sedate pace. The light on Valerie's bow helps illuminate the space. This area is pretty uninteresting--plain stone walls, floor, and ceiling. The slide ends in a small chamber where Hobie is sitting, and that's where things get interesting.

Tali also goes cautiously, using her robe and goggles to see everything. The "slide room" is pretty boring, but the end of the slide opens into a small chamber that is interesting indeed.

Murphy, Pressi, Kezzem, and Bliss are still in the room above. So it is Hobie, Succotash, and Tali who first see the small chamber.

It, too, is fairly plain, with stone walls, floor, and ceiling. But in the middle of the chamber is a large, barrel-shaped...sculpture? Something. And "barrel-shaped" doesn't really do it justice; its lines are sleek and graceful. It is decorated with carvings you don't think you've seen before. Although....

Pressi is ready to oblige. She mentions a moon trip.

But, if this thing really is going to send you to the moon--or Fargunia, or the Southern Continent, or a mysterious magic kingdom ruled by a mouse--there are some logistical considerations first. The halflings are all down in the underground chamber. At least, Pressi didn't specifically say she was down there, but she's manipulating keys so we can assume. Valerie is down there, too, as is Mookie. But Harper and Rumpus are still up in the main part of the temple. Whatever is going to happen here probably won't include them unless you take the time to move them down there. Plus any other animal companions your DM may have lost track of.

Or, maybe you want to move the animals out of the room so they're clear of whatever's going to happen because you don't know what that is. Either way, you need to decide who goes where before you start that thing up.

Succotash casts Augury, and gets....no reply. He casts Detect Magic, and the device is definitely magic, but it's a kind you've never encountered before.

Tentatively, you put the key into the keyhole to see what happens. Nothing happens. You turn the key, and things start to happen.

Another is just right for a big cat. Another is just right for a little cat. One is long and thin, and could be perched on by a bird. There doesn't appear to be anything for the Unseen Servant; either the machine could not detect it, or it's ignoring it.

The handles and other objects are ready for your group. But it's not too late to back out....

"I wonder if this Teucri object is their version of a merry ride?" He turns to Pressi. "The moon, you say? If so, which one, I wonder?" He looks at Harper. "You ready to try this out with us? If so, this big white barrel-shaped thing has made a spot for you," which he indicates with a wave of the hand.

"You willing to give this a try with us, Tali?" he asks.

Then returning to Pressi, he says, "If elsewhere - or elsewhen - well, let's try this - to the moon and beyond!" He places his left hand on the machine, making certain it is adjacent a free one for Pressi.

Succotash dismounts, and reaches for his handle. As he is reaching, he realizes that Valerie has no idea what to do, so he uses his "Speak with Animals" Spell-like Ability to explain it to her. At first the velociraptor tries to grasp the thing with her talons, but since her protrusion is meant for biting, and not grabbing, Succotash directs her to to so, which she does, as Succotash grabs his handle.

Hobie and Kezzem promptly grasp handles.

Bliss and Mookie disagree somewhat on the wisdom of proceeding, but eventually cat-Bliss's paw and Mookie's feet are on the device.

Murphy decides to give it a whirl, and invites Pressi to do the same.

Succotash has some trouble getting Valerie to bite on her "handle." She can grasp it with a talon if she prefers; it's situated a little awkwardly but she can do it.

Not everyone has posted, but we're going to go forward with this.

Once all the people, and animals, and people temporarily shaped into animals, touch the device...nothing happens. You all kind of look at each other for a moment. But then a subtle vibration begins in the machine. It becomes more and more pronounced. You are shaking with it. Your whole body is shaking. It's getting difficult for your eyes to focus--or is the background actually blurring? Even Tali in her robe can't say for sure. You shake until you think you may shake apart--and then it seems you black out for a moment.

[Everybody take 123,000 XP for this scene, which was supposed to be two scenes, but your DM got all excited. On to the next module.]
