A few hours later, you think you are getting close to the location of the kobold village. Your hunch is confirmed when a kobold, armed with a spear, steps into your path. He challenges you in Draconic: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Who are you? What do you want here?" }

When challenged by the sentries, many of you hasten to explain your purpose. You are very diplomatic. Murphy even thinks to show one of the potions you bought.

Alas, nobody thinks to show the token you were given for this exact purpose, but the sentry does not seem inclined to hold it against you. Still wary, he nods.

Speaking in Draconic, he says: Highlight to display spoiler: {Come, then. You will see the Chief. And Auntie.}

With his spear, he motions for you to precede him.

You walk for several minutes before reaching a clearing. In the clearing is a circle of huts, all sized for Small creatures. Cookfires burn here and there, and you see kobolds going about their daily work. Two kobolds are scraping a hide from some kind of mammal. Another kobold grinds something with a pestle. Several kobolds are sewing; one is tending the fires. All of the kobolds look up when you enter the village.

"You wait here," the sentry says in accented Common, then hurries toward one of the huts.

While you wait, Bliss amuses himself by becoming a cat. Mookie flies a quick recon, and sees nothing noteworthy. Succotash, looking around, also doesn't see anything alarming, though some of what the kobolds are doing is reasonably interesting.

Hobie asks the kobold with the pestle what she is making. "Nut flour," she says, showing you the bowl. "For nut-cakes tomorrow."

Pressi has a sudden, sneaking suspicion where the token went. You detect for magic, and find a few minor charms.

Murphy talks to Mowa, who remains unconvinced of the benefits of understanding the two-legs.

After a time, the sentry returns. "Chief and Auntie see you now," he says in Common, gesturing you to follow.

He leads the way to one of the larger huts, and motions you in. Inside, you find a comfortable, if primitive, living space. Neat bundles of cloth suggest clothes and bedrolls. Herbs hang from the ceiling, and a collection of small bowls and pots is stored on a wooden shelf. They are probably for herbal preparations rather than cooking.

Two kobolds are inside the hut. An imposing male kobold stands near the center. He is wearing an intricate, colorful headdress and carrying a lavishly decorated spear. He frowns as you enter.

The other kobold is sitting in a large chair resembling a throne, set exactly in the hut's center. She is very, very old. Her face is a mass of wrinkles, and her markings have faded to a near-uniform gray.

"Well, well," she says in perfect, unaccented Common. "And who might you be?"

You respond to Auntie's query at your most diplomatic. Tali describes the token, which should still be in Murphy's possession unless Harper eated it.

Hobie is concerned about revealing too much about the Battle of Sargrass Plains, but you're pretty sure that Auntie hasn't heard about it. And it soon becomes clear that Chief Sskurhe doesn't speak Common.

"As I'm sure you guessed, I am called Auntie," says Auntie. "You all seem like nice children. This is Sskurhe," she continues, adding in Draconic, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Don't fidget!"} The chief shoots her an aggrieved look but says nothing.

"Now then. I asked young Ka to be on the lookout because we found something," Auntie says. She shakes her head. "Wait, I must go back. Far to the north of here, there is a very old temple. It has fallen into ruin. We aren't sure who built it, or why. Legend has it, though, that those who built the temple stole a sacred talisman from the kobolds and placed it within the temple.

"Some weeks ago, a group of our hunters, roaming farther north than usual, came upon some strange objects. They brought the objects back here with them, hoping the elders would know what they were. We did not. However, our shaman was able to divine that the objects have something to do with this abandoned temple. We are not sure what kind of connection it is."

She looks over at Sskurhe, and says in Draconic, Highlight to display spoiler: {"So. A promising group of children, I must say. Do you think they can be the ones to help us?"}

He sighs heavily, and replies, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Auntie, as I've said many times, my warriors are more than capable of doing this! Let us go, and recover our own talisman. This is a matter for kobolds."}

Auntie waves a hand. "Sskurhe," she says, Highlight to display spoiler: {"You're a nice boy, but you aren't thinking this through. What if something happens to your warriors? We cannot do without them! Youngsters like this,"} she nods in your direction, Highlight to display spoiler: {"are trained with special skills that your warriors do not possess."}

"I should also mention," she adds in Common, "that there is rumored to be other treasures in the temple, things rare and wondrous to behold. We are only interested in the talisman. Any other treasure would be yours to keep." She looks at you, eyes still bright in her faded, wrinkled face. "So, what do you say? Will you recover our talisman for us?"

"Chief Sskurhe, what Auntie says is true, and that is no slight to your warriors. Your warriors are trained for, well war, unless I'm not mistaken, and the average warrior, while formidable on the battlefield, to be sure, will soon discover that a completely different skill set is required when traversing a dungeon, or the like, skills that the average warrior has no need for and as such doesn't posses, and I fear your brave warriors would not realize their need until it was to late. That is where adventurers come into play, dungeon exploration is our bread and butter as it were. My friends and I each have distinct skills that make us a force to be reckoned with in those abnormal conditions found in the dank places of the Wold. We may not fair well as part of a large army, a small, independent squad of shock troops maybe, but the rank and file military would not be an area that we could thrive in, however slaying monsters and exploring caverns are areas at which we excel.

My friend Murphy mentioned a prior engagement, an engagement that I to wish to uphold, and so I propose a solution. Since this jungle is your home, and your warriors know it far better than we ever could what if you were to have a small squad of your finest escort the lioness to the plains beyond, while we depart for this temple of yours? Murphy and myself both have the ability to speak with the lioness, and we could explain to her the situation, and remind her that your warriors are friends not food, and than everyone wins!

Succotash has no idea as to what the iron pieces may be, but when Murphy makes his comments on the keys, he says, "I should have known that, though they are an interesting type of key to be sure, nothing like I've ever seen before, I wonder what wonders lay sealed behind the locks that these keys are designed to open?

"So Murph do you want to talk to Mowa, to get her opinion, or should I, or would you prefer we do so together?"

Pressi decides it might be a good time to cast comprehend languages on herself (domain slot).

Pressi recognizes the objects as keys right away (Disable Device roll), even before Murphy mentions as such.

To Murphy, she bounces back and forth a couple of ideas, but she really doesn't have much thought one way or the other. Two quick points. 1) She has to check that she isn't out of L5 spells. and 2) there may be issues with party splitting.

And one other thing, "Well, they may not have a deadline. In my experience, people who bring things INTO an enchanted temple usually do. Hey, Auntie, there aren't any unusual astronomy things coming up, are there? Eclipses, aligning planets? Ten year anniversaries?"

Mowa Sidebar
Murphy is most grateful to Succotash for helping him understand. "We certainly can speak with her together, yes." He will wait until their audience with Auntie and Chief Sskurhe has concluded, likely just outside the village to minimize distractions. He tells the cleric that he can commune with nature on the plains to try to locate other lions.

"Mowa, we need to make a decision, and we need your help. Our pledge is to you, to find a good place for you to live among your own kind. Beyond this jungle land called Cthonia lie extensive plains. Traveling there on foot might take another week or two through the jungle and plateaus.

"The people of this tribe need our help to find a lost item from an old building, a temple. It will likely be a dangerous place, with traps and monsters. We do not know how long it might take to find the item. A day? Two or three days? We do not know.

"We have special ways of traveling by magic. Perhaps a few of us can travel swiftly ahead to try to find you a place, and a pride of lions. Then we can return to you, and take you there by magic. Faster than walking.

"Another way - you travel there with these kobolds, some of their warriors. But if they face the kind of danger we did with the huge beast and vine, they may die, and you with them. Yet perhaps it would work.

"So, do we try the way of magic, and perhaps get you to the plains in two or three days at most? Or do you travel with the kobolds? Or do you wait until we find the item, then walk with us through the jungle to the plains beyond? Fast through magic, or longer with kobolds, or wait a few days then walk with us?

"Succotash - more thoughts?"

Kezzem detects no evil in the hut.

Hobie promises to get the talisman back. Both Pressi and Murphy recognize the strange objects as keys.

Succotash translates his conversation with Sskurhe for his friends. Bliss is dubious about entrusting Mowa to warriors who might not be as capable. He asks Auntie whether there is any hurry.

"No hurry, no hurry, child," she says. "Just mind you don't run off with our trinkets."

Murphy and Pressi talk logistics, then Murphy asks Mowa her opinion. Mowa is anxious to find a new home. She would prefer that you bring her to the plains, as you promised, before running off to do kobold things. Her second choice (reluctantly) would be to allow the kobolds to escort her while you head off on your errand.

Pressi asks Auntie whether there are any astronomical portents or important anniversaries coming up, and the old kobold cackles. "Ha-ha! Bright girl, to think of such things. But no. I can think of nothing special about this time of year." She translates your question for Sskurhe, who also looks impressed that you thought of it, but has nothing to add.

Bliss and Kezzem almost left us to see Lord Gargul, in fact. Bliss declares that a decision has been made! Which may be a tad optimistic, but it seems the rest of the group is inclined to go along.

Kezzem and Hobie are concerned that, now that the group has keys, they might lose them--as lost keys are a universal affliction. Hobie makes some contingency plans.

Tali asks what kind of temple it is, and who used it. Auntie replies, "We don't know. We don't know who built it, or who used it, or even what god it was dedicated to. It was already a ruin when I was a very young kobold, and that was a very long time ago."

Succotash wishes you could teleport to the plains, but of course if you could do that you would have missed out on this swell adventure! You also ask if you can spend the night.

"Yes, of course," Auntie says. "We would be honored to host you." To Sskurhe, she adds in Draconic, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Run along now. And tell Hrashk I want to see her."}

Sskurhe rolls his eyes--careful to do it so Auntie can't see--and leaves the hut. "You, too," she says to your group. "Run along and let an old woman rest. Your accommodations will be ready soon."

Succotash also would love to here the story of Auntie's village. He asks, "Please don't think I'm judging your race, but I find it fascinating to find a whole village of kobolds that are of good, or at the very least neutral alignment. Obviously people of all races have the right and ability to chose their own way, in fact I have heard multiple stories of individuals, of the so called "evil races", who chose to go a different path than the majority of their peers, but to find a whole village of a stereotypical "evil race" who chose a different path is something new to me, and I would love to here how that came to be, as it is quite the spectacular anomaly".

Kezzem asks Pressi whether the mushroom bit has been played out. Pressi has yet to weigh in on the subject, but your DM thinks the answer is yes.

Murphy, Hobie, and Succotash request to be told the tale of the tribe, and Auntie says she'll see what she can do. You leave the hut then, your audience concluded. Bliss cautions his friends not to bother Auntie anymore.

You watch as the kobolds begin making preparations to host you for the night. Kobolds begin moving in and out of a particular hut, carrying baskets and bundles. You realize that whoever lives there is moving out temporarily to make space for you. Near the hut, other kobolds are building some kind of temporary shelter with open sides and a palm-leaf roof.

Meanwhile, there is increasing activity near the cook-fires. More kobolds gather around them, and the chopping, pounding, and mixing intensifies.

After a while, a kobold approaches you. You don't recognize--uh, her? Probably her. And when she speaks, you're even more sure she is female. "Please, honored guests," she says. "I am Hrashk. Your place is ready. Please to follow this way."

She leads the way to the hut. The interior is clean and tidy. There are a few bedrolls, but not enough for all of you. Either this is all they could spare, or they noticed that many of you carried your own bedrolls. Or possibly both. In the center of the hut are bowls containing dried fruits, nuts, and pieces of flat bread, along with pitchers of water and something that looks like fruit juice.

"Things for mid meal are here. We hope you like them. There is place outside for animals, not ready yet, but soon." She gives you a little bow, and seems to be waiting for your reaction.

"Hrashk, this is lovely. Thank you, and those who helped you, for showing us your kind hospitality," Murphy says to the kobold girl. Young woman? "Tell those who gave up their space for us, and who are making space for our animals that we are grateful. Say, have you ever gone for a safe flight in the air? I was thinking of giving people rides this afternoon, if they would like. Or, if you ever have envied the birds who fly in the canopy and higher than the trees above, we could help you try that. There is something I'll need to do first, right after this meal, though."

"Tali. How are you doing? Good job today out there in the jungle. May I ask a favor? After we finish eating, could you turn me invisible after I cast a couple of spells myself, and cast haste? I want to shoot up towards the heavens and get a good look around. Pressi, prepare for a mental flow as I take a look around. Unless you want to ride into the sky with me - if so, put goggles on. We'll be going over 71 miles an hour" [(120+5)*5+30=655 ft/round = 71.59 mph] "up maybe five to seven miles - but before we run out of air - you remember how it got thin up on the mountainside? While it's still daylight, I'm wondering whether we'll be able to see as far as the badlands, or the oceans, the plateaus, maybe even the plains. Or, just get a bunch of bugs in our teeth. But yes, let's eat first." Murphy sits with the rest, and enjoys the food. As he munches on the nuts, he says, "If anyone else wants to join me for a vertical flight to look around after this mid-day meal, let me know. I can carry a few of you." He drinks the fruit-like juice, taking in its flavor and texture.

"No, Bliss, we don't need to check for poison. And since it's midday, though I know you were taught to do so in new places. I suppose we can set watches - but maybe just plan to do so for this evening, after stories and dancing and such."

Pressi is a bit closer to Bliss than Murphy about keeping an eye on the kobolds. She thinks back to one of the times they trusted the hospitality of an ally they thought they were helping. The time that ally tried to feed them to constructs and pump her personally full of wolds blood.

That said, she doesn't think the kobolds would just straight up attack or poison them. If that were the case, they wouldn't have handed them temple keys.

Pressi also isn't quite sure what the vertical flight is for. She presumes it's so they can get a better idea of where the temple and/or where the animal refuge is, but it sounds like Murphy just wants to show off to the kobolds. Which... Pressi might be more on board with if she can think of something that won't freak out the villagers.

DM Kathy
Monday May 18th, 2020 12:56:14 PM

Bliss tries some flatbread and finds it good. Mookie complains about a lack of worms, but makes do with nuts.

Pressi wants to keep an eye on the guard, but nobody seems to be guarding you. There is Hrashk, but she seems to be more of a project manager.

Murphy can tell that Hrashk is no longer young, but not really old yet either. She is a little stressed from these last-minute preparations, but confident that she has it under control. She does not wish your group harm; in fact, she is seeking your good opinion. You offer to take her aloft, and she declines politely. You go up yourself, and see--well, jungle. You do see the plains off to the northeast, and think your group could probably cover the distance in a day or two.

The shelter for the animals is soon ready. Mowa stalks into the covered space, then flops regally onto her side, tail twitching. She is obviously enjoying herself. Harper, Valerie, and the ponies soon join her.

You pass a pleasant few hours. The afternoon is warm, but the interior of your borrowed hut stays reasonably cool. Young kobolds periodically refresh your pitcher of water. You can stay in the hut, or wander about the village watching the kobolds work. Some of them seem to get a little nervous when observed, but nobody asks you to stop or go back inside. As the afternoon wears on, the cooking spells become more and more appetizing.

At last, Hrashk reappears and invites you to follow her to your feast.

For something thrown together at the last minute, the feast is pretty impressive. Multiple dishes are brought for you to sample: meat, vegetables, grains, fruit. Many dishes are spicy; some are very spicy indeed! As you eat, a very nervous-looking kobold, playing on a stringed instrument you do not recognize, sings a short ballad. Those of you who understand Draconic realize it is a ballad about you! The musician must have composed it this afternoon, and it's not bad. He seemed to rely heavily on certain pre-written forms, as many bards do, but overall the effort is pleasing, if a bit short.

After the ballad, the young kobold continues to play and sing, songs the villagers obviously know and like. They sing along to some of the songs.

At the end of the meal, clean cloths and bowls of warm water are passed so that everyone can clean up a bit. The mood becomes anticipatory, and the kobolds begin to look in Auntie's direction.

Murphy relays to the others that they have either one long day, or a couple of regular days of travel to get through the jungle to the plains. "Unless we get further diverted."

As others relaxed during the afternoon, busy Murphy offered a few things to those who prepared the food - Portions of wheat, flour, cinnamon, ginger, pepper, salt, cloves, and one bottle of fine wine. He also saw to it that the animals were fed and groomed.

He enjoys the food tremendously. Moreso, the people who prepared it for them. Such courtesy and hospitality. He tells Hrashk, "You are an exceptional people."

During the music he tries dancing - but barely avoids falling upon his face. Giving up quickly on that notion, instead he decides occasionally to sing along. Now, coming from a very musical family, though not as good as his father or brother or a couple of sisters, he acquits himself well, adding bits of harmony. And he has a good ear - if a verse or chorus is repeated, and by watching the mouths of other singers, manages to get the pronunciation down pretty well. He figures this is the start of his training to learn draconic. At one point, he offers an iconic Crescent Valley song, 'Our Gratitude We Offer.' Likely most members of the party know it, and the tune.

And now - it's time for Auntie. He sits next to Pressi and takes her hand.

Hobie tries to play along with the musician, while Bliss, Murphy, and Pressi try to dance. This earns puzzled looks from some of the kobolds (none of whom seem at all inclined to dance), but nobody tries to stop you.

Kezzem reflects that maybe shorter beings are nicer than taller ones.

Succotash challenges himself to eat the very hottest dishes. They are tasty, but it's been nearly a half hour and your mouth is still burning!

Auntie speaks. "Our visitors have asked for the story of our tribe." She speaks first in Draconic, then repeats what she's said in Common.

The other kobolds seem to lean in a bit. This seems to be a popular story. As Auntie tells the tale, she switches seamlessly between Draconic and Common, telling the tale in both languages.

"Long ago, it is said, the first kobolds came to the jungle. They saw it was a land of plenty, but also a land of danger. Fierce dinosaurs hunted in the thickets; strange plants tried to entangle and crush. Snakes struck; insects swarmed. And much of the good territory was already claimed by gnolls and goblins and humans.

"In time, two brothers came to be great leaders of the kobolds. The younger brother was a fierce warrior. He rallied the finest fighters among the kobolds and began defending the people from the dangers that hunted them. In time, his leadership ensured that the people were safer.

"The older brother was wise in the ways of nature and magic. He used his abilities to heal, and urged his followers to understand this new land, that they might live in harmony with it. In time, his leadership ensured that people had enough food to eat and medicines to cure their ailments.

"But as the people grew safer and more contented, the brothers began quarreling more and more. They quarreled over tactics, over the placement of villages and the use of resources. But most of all, they quarreled over what was to be done with the others who lived in the jungle--the gnolls and goblins and humans. The younger brother wanted to make war on these other tribes, to drive them from the land so that only kobolds would live here. The elder wanted to find common ground with these other tribes, and perhaps trade with them.

"They quarreled more and more, and finally the differences became too much. The Great Rift occurred. The followers of the younger brother left. Even now, their descendants wage fierce war on any who infringe on kobold territory. They are the ones called Ss'Hathk.

"We are the descendants of the older brother. We seek to live in harmony with the jungle, to unlock its secrets for growth and healing, and to trade peacefully with those who also dwell here. We are the K’tthhykk."

Auntie's Origin Story

At hearing Kezzem's comment, Tali giggles aloud, slapping her knee. Tali muses aloud, "if they will ever come across the Ss'Hathk tribe and would the affiliation with K'tthhykk offer them any goodwill?"

"Well, Auntie, maam, once we set up our new base in the reformed temple, we can set up permanent teleportal circles, and then you can trade with all us halflings in the Crescent Valley! We gotta stick together against the bigguns!"

He turns to Tali and Pressi, asking in a whisper, "We can do that, right? Set up teleportal circles? They are one-way, so we need two sets ..."

Bliss loses himself in thought. [Spellcraft 31 should do it ...]

"hmmmm," he mutters, "Two CL17 scrolls of Teleportation Circle ... that's 25x17x9, +1,000, times 2, okay. Then two CL17 scrolls of Permanency ... also 25x17x9, only +22,500, times 2 again, so ..."

Bliss scratches at his Headband of Intelligence, as he stretches its capabilities ... then he looks up. "I figure we can do it for just about 62 grand! If we all chip in, we can afford that! Easy peasy!"

Mookie groans and lays down. "Oh my achin' head! Kid, stop sending math at my brain! Gosh darn telepathy! Not worth it!"

Part of the time, Murphy jots notes, and finds in particular Auntie's story a rich source of language learning - and local history. When she finishes, but after Kez, Tali and Bliss talk, he picks up on Tali's thread. "Yes, should we come across the Ss'Hathk tribe, as you are brother tribes - or cousins? - have you any recommendations on how we might pass through their area in peace?

"It is good that your tribe has chosen such a way of wisdom, and prosperity. Sometimes I wish that people would stop attacking our people, that we might live in peace and even greater prosperity."

Succotash listens intently to Auntie's story. he finds it both fascinating and sad. Fascinating because of Auntie's people choosing wisdom and peaceful living, but sad because of the split between the two brothers. He listens to Bliss's desire to set up trade between the kobolds, and the Crescent Valley, and even though he feels that it could be good for both parties, he feels that those discussions would be better off discussed by the leaders of both parties, and not a band of adventures.

To Tali, "I have no doubt that the other side of a civil war splitting over whether to wage war on outsiders would absolutely consider affiliation with the other tribe as worthy of an invite for coffee. But I wouldn't drink it."

To Bliss, "I get your excitement and all, but can we at least see the temple before we make any major purchasing decisions. Get some idea of whether its even still standing, how many rooms it has, does it have a yard, and I'd prefer getting a doom temple base in a good school district. We really shouldn't just move into the first temple that we see, anyway. Maybe wait for some better interest rates."

After Auntie's tale is finished, Tali and Murphy wonder whether there is any way deal peacefully with the Ss'Hathk, should you ever encounter them. Unfortunately, the answer seems to be "no." The Ss'Hathk are hostile to outsiders, and there doesn't seem to be any way of changing that.

Bliss talks of setting up teleportation circles, in the temple that you will surely reclaim, so that the K’tthhykk can trade with Crescent Valley! Pressi cautions him that such plans might be premature, and Succotash privately agrees with her.

There is more conversation, but essentially the evening is over. The musician packs up his instrument. Kobolds begin drifting back to their huts. In due course, you also retire and get a good night's sleep.

The morning is pleasantly cool, and a light fog clings to the ground. It is a good day to begin your journey to the plains.

"Murphey, you are our nature expert," says Kezzem. "Can you tell us what we can expect to encounter in the plains? Or in other words, Murphey! You've got some 'plaining to do!"

Bliss performs his morning rituals -- the Grimalkin ritual on his own, the Sharing with Mookie, and the Ward rituals with Mookie and Pressi and Harper (though he does not himself benefit from that one). As per usual, he boosts the Sharing with a sacrifice of blood (+2CL), and also uses his extend rod to double the Shield of Faith's duration.

(Numerically, he cannot fail his check to Draw Woldsblood to power his magic, or the DC20 Handle Animal check for the Grimalkin ritual, nor the DC30 Spellcraft check for the Sharing ritual. It's nice to be high level.)

Bliss casts the usual Heros' Breakfast for himself and Mookie, Pressi and Harper, Brother Succotash and Valerie, Sir Kezzem and Runpus, Murphy, Tali, Hobie, and of course Mowa. That's 12 eaters, perfect for Bliss's caster level of 12. He gets a worried look.

"Guys! Guys!" he whispers, "Is it rude to make our own breakfast, and not invite our new friends? Maybe Miss Pressi can make another Feast for Auntie and some of our hosts?"

"Lions, Kezzem. Gazelles. Springboks. Buffalo. Mice. Grasses," Murphy begins. "Scattered trees. Giraffes, maybe? I've just heard about some of these animals. Giraffes are said to have very long necks. Snakes. Lots of different types of birds. Hyenas. People. Mud. Beauty. Many other critters - hoppers, climbers, sprinters, crawlers, plants, life and death and mysteries. That is part of the plain's truth, Kez. By this evening, we might be getting close to the plains. I've got a spell - commune with nature. Perhaps nature can tell me more about herself when I cast that. Including - are any other lions out there?"

Once the party gets going, Murphy morphs into a bird similar to one he has seen in the jungle. He scouts along, and occasionally chats with his friends.

"I think if we are careful to leave some room left in our bellies, we should be able to dine with our hosts still", Succotash suggests, "Then again, we are halflings, so that shouldn't be an issue, or we could just eat Bliss's meal, and then say our goodbyes to Auntie and the rest, and not be a burden to our friends here anymore".

As asked by Bliss, she casts Heroes feast for Auntie and... at least their guides as they head out. She goes ahead and casts two shields of faith on herself.

As always, she packs up, looks out towards the woods and takes off in the sky on her flying broom.
