Scene 3 - The Invasion

DM Carl  d20+3=14 ;
Monday August 12th, 2019 1:49:58 PM

Murphy finds some time to grow some ivy to protect the tower. With that, our heroes have made the battlefield firmly to their advantage.

Good thing too, because time is up.

They arrive at dusk. They are drenched, wind-burned, and more than a few of them are hobbling. They are also late, hungry, and very angry (and probably a little worn out). Their force is still overwhelming, a mass of hill, stone, and fire giants, most armed with spiked metal clubs, fight through Murphy's final control winds spell. Hill giants lead the charge, several of them shouting in pain and falling over as they discover the spiked growth left for them. Already having dealt with such traps on the trip here, the horde quickly parts onto eastern and western fronts.

Our heroes have created a strong channel towards the tower and the Iron Giant, but little to provide cover to the halfling defenders on either side. The halfling archers on either side take aim and fire as giant heads crest the artificial summit, felling several before the giants gain the high ground. About half those giants reach into pouches on their belts and produce fist-sized (giant fist-sized, that is) crude metal balls that they hurl into the assembled ranks. The halfling have assembled a tower-shield wall in the front ranks, but with the height advantage presented to the giants, they're able to hurl the metal balls into the assembled defenders. Several are crushed, but they quickly spread out to avoid giving the giants too large a target. The scene quickly descends into fierce combat as the giants jump down from the berms and begin their charge.

Meanwhile, the giants in the middle seem very reluctant to approach the tower and the Iron Giant, but with throngs of other giants behind and to either side, they're left with little choice. With no where else to go, the initial charge of hill giants charges the tower.

Candy is the first to fire, eager as she is. Too eager, it would seem, as the shot goes wide. She frowns, but keeps her cool. Erbin is already there to reload her balista. Seems they took their practice seriously.

Here's the map. If anyone needs a reminder on what the siege weaponry or Giant does in combat, let me know.

Bliss does not feel like going out to meet the charge, but he has no problem with prepping for the attack and waiting for a giant to get in range. He casts Extended Divine Favor and gets his Shield of Faith going. That's one round of battle, perched 20 ft up the Giant.

Are we now round by round? If not, in the next round Bliss casts his Polymorph spell and takes on the form of OctoBliss. Mookie uses his Mage Hand and his beak to get out and drink a philter of Mirror Image.

Near the tower, Pressi's summons (Gerry the Graven Guardian) began to hold (total defense).

By the iron giant's legs, Pressi's spectral hand began to spin around, looking for spells to cast.

In the giant's entry room, Harper slept on Ix's chair.

Up in the giant's shoulder, Pressi's scrying mirror clocked to zero. She glances to see if she can still see her target.

With an outstretched hand, she fires mind fog (DC 22) down into the middle of the cluster of giants as Succotash moves forward. She follows up with a ghost sound warning. Her broom remains near the catapult, just in case.

Murphy's Morosity
Were he in a form where such was possible, one would see that the blood has drained from Murphy's face. He provided the military and civilian defenders with a tremendous advantage over the invading forces: Higher ground. He laid out ramps for them to ascend. He counseled placing ropes along the back sides of the 20' high berms to allow for quick descents by the halflings should they need such. (see Invasion Setup map footnotes)

The enormous tactical advantage he provided through the move earth spell - they have squandered. There must be some among them who saw the benefit. He set it up for them to rain down missiles in the killing field of the ditch 45' feet below the top of the berm. The elder air elementals could sweep the face of the berm as giants try to climb to the top. Spells could be cast below.

The majority of the giants are still below. How to drive those up top back and regain - or gain - the high ground?

Why did the halflings - especially the militia and knights, who ought to know better - remain perhaps timidly, quite foolishly off the ramparts Murphy spent hours preparing for their use? Murphy ponders these things as he moves to make a difference.

Murphy's Maneuver
A halfling druid of action, Murphy whirlwinds, 50' tall, and slams up against hill giants 7 (20 hp dam), B (21), A (19), 8 (20) (should be +10 rather than +9) (ignore last roll). As he comes into contact with each, the giant will need to make a reflex save DC 26 or receive slam damage (shown in parentheses). Whether or not it suffers damage, it also will need to make a separate reflex save DC 26 or be taken up into the funnel of the whirlwind, and be tossed about within the 10,145 cubic feet of the airy vortex, taking additional damage each round.

Murphy just recently gained the wingover feat, so need make no fly check, nor lose speed due to his nearly 180 degree change in direction. He had dropped down so the lower opening of the vortex was about 7 feet off the ground, and after striking (and possibly capturing) the last of the giants, lifts off to a height of 42 feet at the bottom, and once he bypasses Pressi's mind fog area scoots a bit behind the Iron Giant's right leg. Their saving throws will determine how many of the four hill giants may be caught up in the whirlwind.

OOC: Whoever's moving monsters on the map, stop.

Finally, Succotash gets to take the Iron Giant into combat.

It is not pretty.

Giant 3 is flattened outright. The rest are nearly dead. All are on their backs. The giants standing around the impact zone look up, then around, then back. There is no where for them to go but forward, though. Sucks for them.

Bliss prepares to enter battle.

OOC: Yes, this combat will go round by round like any other. Spell duration will work like normal. Will I be describing way more than 6 seconds of action about the battle at large every round? Yes. It's flavor text at this point, a way to pass 45 minutes of fighting without literally spending 9 months in combat.

Kezzem sends a ballista bolt hurtling towards giant C. The soft wood embeds itself in the giant's chest and splinters through its major organs. It falls over extremely dead and pouring blood onto the ground. Erbin runs another bolt over to Kezzem and loads it. He looks down at the battlefield and immediately loses both his lunches over the side of the Iron Giant. Nothing a little rain won't wash off. He recovers and runs back to start reloading Candy's ballista.

Pressi sends a mind fog onto the battlefield as Harper and Gerry take their positions. Every giant in the mind fog spell feels its already limited wisdom diminished. From this high up, it's unlikely Pressi could tell her hill giant target from the rest. He might be that ooze Succotash is stepping on.

Talia sends a chain lightning spell coursing through the assembled giants. Every giant reeling from Succotash's stomp is killed outright. The rest are badly injured as electricity races through them.

Murphy swoops down and picks up four giants. Three of which barely cling to life.

The giants caught up in Murphy's whirlwind lash out at the creature that picked them up, as it's really all they can do. Most of the attacks hit air, but two manage to hit the few sensitive bits that make up air elemental Murphy.

Hit AC 33 for 23 damage
Nat 20 (crit confirm fail) for 23 damage

Giants 5 and 9 are effected by mind fog and can only run in terror at the Iron Giant. Both move to squeeze past the tower and Bliss' plant growth spell. Gerry gets an AoO on both (5 moved first if he doesn't have combat reflexes).

C decides stomping through plants is better than being crushed by Succotash. It slowly starts moving away.

1 decides to follow his fleeing comrades, running through Pressi's fog (will save 7: fail).

Giants continue to pour forth, though the ones in the middle who come at the tower continue to be pressed into the fray. The initial charge of hill giants has mostly been wiped out, and stone giants are starting to attack as well.

The battle on the sides fare well. The giants' charge has given the halfling defenders cover from further ranged attacks. The assembled soldiers from Angel Springs are obviously very well trained against giant attacks. Two rows of huge (for a halfling, obviously), sharply angled tower shields deflect the overhead attacks of the giants, while longspears reach through the small gaps to impale the attackers. Behind the front lines, the Humble's Ford militia fight with bow, crossbow, and sling.

They can't keep up the defense all day, though. Eventually those shield arms are going to give out. Have the numerous obstacles bought them enough time?

Inside the Iron Giant, Tiana begins to sweat. She studiously keeps the DPAA trained on the tower, wishing not for the first time she had some way of speeding this along. Those looking at the tower see a faint glow at it's peak.

Succotash has the Iron giant grasp its right forearm, he aims for the space between stone giant 1, and hill giant F, and fires a visible blast of kinetic energy that causes the air to ripple, leaving a 30ft diameter crater that is 15ft at it's deepest point. The blast should hit hill giants e, F, and G, as well as stone giants 1, 4 and I'm not sure but maybe 3. each receives 95 damage DC 39 reflex for 1/2 damage. It will take 3 rounds for the divine thunder to recharge.

Succotash sends Miss Piggy out to help Gerry, and she races down to the summoned constructs location and attacks hill giant 9

Murphy ascends to a (lower) height of 102' to drop off his passengers as follows:
Hill Giant B (19 hp damage from buffeting within unless he succeeds on a Reflex save DC 26). B is dropped from on high on top of HG #1 (falling damage 10d6=36 --> each?)
HG 8 (20hp buffet). Falls on both 1 and 9 (29hp for #8, and 1 and 9 split say 15hp/14hp);
HG 7 (19hp buffet). Falls on 5 (33hp)
HG A (14hp buffer). Falls on C (25hp)

Murphy then sends a 30' tall 5' wide shaft of lightning (from call lightning storm cast earlier) down on the head of C for 15 hp electrical damage (save DC 32 for 1/2).

[Note: As we now show more map area, matching the terrain on original map, the 20' tall berm is at the top of this map where most of the new giants are, as is the opening to the spike growth area in the upper right of the map.
[I know you, DM Carl, asked whoever was moving the monsters on the map to stop it. I was not, but am doing so this round, as Murphy is actually moving monsters. Though he was trying to drop them as described in the text, I slightly off-set them on the map so you can read most of the monster numbers. #1 is a bit obscured by B and 8]
[I also copied the map, so we can keep track of rounds. The newest is designated #1 at the top, with the date toward upper left. Yesterday's is #2 for now]

Succotash brings the thunder, literally. Every hill giant he hits is atomized. The stone giants cling to life, reeling from the impact. He blows a hole in the berm with the impact. Technically there's still 5' of earth, but we're talking about giants here. Let's not split hairs.

Murphy buffets the giants stuck in his vortex (I'm dealing their damage before you drop them). Hill giants B, 7, and A all die from the trauma. B is still kicking, but pretty angry.

Then, he starts dropping the corpses of their comrades on the giants. Metal. Adding injury to injury, he then calls a bolt of lightning down on C. The only giants left alive after the rain of giant corpses are 1 and C.

Kezzem takes aim, but finds Murphy has killed his targets. He's aiming in the direction of #1, so let's say he targets that. The bolt tears straight through hill giant #1, liquefying its liver before embedding itself with a thud in the ground behind it.

Bliss moves forward, preparing to pummel and confuse incoming giants as an octopus. Bliss is a weird guy, but we love him.

OOC: Put yourself on the map, dude.

Candy sees stone giant #1 is reeling from Succotash's divine thunder, and takes aim. The metal-tipped ballista bolt takes off a piece of the giant's head, then tears through the horde behind it, breaking the knee cap of and hobbling an incoming hill giant.

Candy cheers for a moment before realizing that she's taken a life for the first time. The realization hits her hard and she tears up. She furiously wipes them away as Erbin reloads her ballista, wisely saying nothing.

The remaining giants realize the futility of attacking pilot Succotash and the Iron Giant, preferring to run past and hopefully not die in the process. Giant C realizes there's no chance he's going to make it through this plant growth without Murphy tearing him to pieces or sucking him up, so he takes a heavy iron ball from a pouch and hurls it at the druid. It's a solid throw, one that really would have hurt Murphy if the druid's entropic shield hadn't deflected it (20% miss chance - rolled 18, you lucky devil). Giant C looks dismayed as it trudges through the growth.

Stone giants 2 and 3 run through Pressi's mind fog, both failing their saves. They stumble dumbly on.

More giants appear on the scene, pushed on by the mass behind them. There's just so many of the darn things.

In fact, it's a good time to mention there is still an entire army of giants waiting to assault Crescent Valley. Our defenders are seriously brave and capable, but even our heroes probably realize that without the fact that Tiana is working furiously to protect the Valley, this would be a doomed undertaking. They just go on and on as far as the eye can see.

Anyone more than 100' in the air, roll another perception, DC 20. Highlight to display spoiler: {Some giants have brought heavy equipment to the fight, but abandoned it. Murphy's winds make attacking with ranged weapons impossible, even for siege weaponry. If the tower were sentient, it would no doubt thank you.}

Our defenders on the eastern and western fronts are holding up well. Way out there on the eastern front, if anyone's looking, is Hobie. Arrow after arrow fly from the skilled archer, each more often then not finding a place in an oncoming giant's head or organs. No doubt he'd be welcome on the Iron Giant, but he's absolutely making a difference in the fight.

The western front does not fare as well. The press of giants threatens to step over and overwhelm the defenders. With the giants so clumped together, a catapult attack from the Iron Giant would no doubt have great effect.

OOC: I'm reusing hill giant numbers. They're not returned from the dead.

***

So, if I were in your shoes, I'd be wondering what the point of this is. Obviously you're going to crush these stupid giants with the amount of fire power you've been given. Well, each giant that gets past you is going to have a major effect on the ongoing defense of Humble's Ford. Should I have mentioned that earlier? Maybe, but who doesn't love surprises? I sure do...

Bliss has a 20 ft reach with his tentacles, so he focuses (rages) and uses those eight attacks on Giants 8 and 7 in the whirlwind. Each tentacle has an attack and a chance to grab, but Bliss is going to skip the grab attacks for fear of getting dragged into the wind.

He activates his Arcane Strike as a swift action. He attacks Giant 8 first, and if/when it goes down, switches to Giant 7.

Tentacles hit ACs ... 27, 16, 14 (miss), 22, 26, 20, 26, and 18. Damages (use what you need) ... 17, 18, 18, 18, 15, 16, 17.

Cayzle - you are looking at the wrong map.
Do NOT use the bottom map. Use the TOP MAP!
(The one numbered #1)

To DM Carl: Please COPY the map before you make your move. Then use the one at the top. This will ensure continuity, will avoid losing info, and should be less confusing.
-Thanks all.

Remember: Use the TOP (#1) Map for your character's moves

OOPS My sorry on the map!

Okay, well, re-evaluating ... how about we say Bliss leapt onto and is clinging to the Iron Giant and attacking Giants numbers 3 and 4? Is that okay? Mookie stays by Bliss, flying nearby.

Here's the map.

Murphy notes the abandoned siegeworks and mountain giants on the way, shoots that info telepathically to Pressi, sends chain lightning for 40 hp damage (Reflex DC 31 for 1/2) to each of these giants on the hill: 1, 2, 0, 9, 3, A, 4, 8, B, 7, 6.

He descends upon HG C, and bumps into him as many times as it takes to catch him up within the funnel of his whirlwind, then lifts him just a little bit up and away. During this process he says, "You may not hurt my people." On the first bump the giant makes his save Reflex DC 26 or takes 22 hp damage, same save to learn whether he was caught up or not. If the first time does not do it, then the second time it's 20 hp damage. If there's a third time, it's another 18 hp damage.

[I will leave it to you, DM Carl, to move him on the map if he failed any one of his 3 'caught in whirlwind' saves.]

Kezzem takes aim and sends a bolt straight through SG0 and HG2. Both are grievously injured.

Pressi spies an opportunity and sends an incendiary round towards the massed giants attacking the western front. As the round erupts, the pressing giants fall into chaos. The Angel Springs soldiers seize on the opportunity and impale those in the front. The rest panic.

OOC: If you're wearing 2 INT gears and some other 3rd different one, your total INT bonus is +4. If you're just wearing two INT gears, it's +2.

Succotash takes a step backwards, flattening SG4 and knocking SG5 to the ground. Miss Piggy finds SG4 quite dead, so she attacks the prone SG5 instead. The stunned giant impotently tries to swat her away, but Miss Piggy gores and electrocutes it twice. It's not looking good.

Bliss, holding on to the legs of the Iron Giant, lashes out at nearby enemies. Giant 4 is dead, but 3 and 5 are within his range. He winds a single tentacle around SG5's next and snaps it. The giant goes limp. Three more attacks land on SG3, beating the thing bloody before it crashes down. One round, two kills. Nice. Too bad octopus taste with their suckers; we'll assume Bliss back-tentacled them.

Talia remembers she has alchemical weapons. How to use them though? Maybe they could be launched w/ a catapult?

OOC: I'm going to allow that 'cuz it sounds awesome.

Murphy sends a bolt of lightning that zaps every single giant that just arrived. None avoid any of the blast. That's 440 damage in a single round. Very impressive. HG2 and SG0, both punctured by Kezzem, clutch their chests (or what's left of them), and fall. Then, our druid sets his sights on the lone HG-C. The giant turns to run, only to get swooped up and battered immediately. He's caught, and about half dead, but he's alive.

Candy notices the two giants to the west making a break for it. She pivots her ballista and takes aim at SG2. Her aim is dead on (nat 20, crit confirmed, that's my girl). The bolt takes off SG2's head, ricochets slightly, and punctures HG-d's heart. Both giants are dead before they hit the ground. Candy gasps, her pride overpowering her revulsion. "I think I'm beatin' ya, Kez," she yells playfully.

The area around the tower is clear for the moment. The giants to the north charge forward. There's a small gap in the giant horde behind them, and no new giants arrive. Fire giants are leading the next charge, though.

On the western front, the air elementals capitalize on the fire from Pressi's incendiary round. They send gusts of wind to fan the flames into more giants and cause those already alight to burn hotter. On both fronts, the elementals guard the armies' flanks. Any giants who try to be sneaky and go the long way find themselves picked up and tossed back into their friends. The eastern front is still holding solid, but fire giants are also almost upon both sides.

Succotash hears the Encompassing Mind up in the cockpit.

Succotash, Miss Tiana requests an update to the battle.
She's kinda freaking out down there since she can't see what's happening.
She is also wondering if she should return the blue gem.
That's a bad idea, right? I just got used to that part of me being gone.
You are the captain, though, and I am here to serve.
Yeeeeeeah. I guess that's true.

"Madam Gem please relay the message that at the moment we are doing well. All fronts are holding ground, and we have been able to foil any attempts to attack the tower directly", Succotash answers, "And please ask her why she would even consider returning the blue gem, I am not, in anyway O.K. with that, unless she can give me a darn good reason!".

He then moves up a bit taking Bliss and Mookie with him (I'm assuming Mookie is staying by Bliss's side) then stomps on SG B, SG 8, and HG 4. if hit they must make a DC 39 fort save or be knocked prone. Mean while, Miss Piggy charges forward to attack SG A.

"Great, kid! Don't get...wait, I just used that reference."

Kezzem takes aim at Stone Giant A, with a line striking Hill Giant 4 and Stone Giant B.

Attack: 1d20 + 19 = 28.
Damage: 15d10 = 90.
Line Damage: 10d10 = 66.
(Please ignore the 115d10 damage roll).

Kezzem holds his hand to his ear. He's seen people do that in plays when they want to talk to someone that's not near so he figures it must work somehow. "Anyone else wondering what the leaders are up to?"

OOC: In my last tabletop game, my 9th-level magus rolled two nat 20s (hit and confirm) when spellstriking with a force punch. Nothing like dealing 2d6+4 damage with your sword then getting to add an extra 9d4+36 to the roll.

Can't wait to try that with Disintegrate :-)

Murphy thinks we are doing reasonably well, so far, yet there are still about a thousand giants preparing to join in the assault. And ... Mountain Giants!

"Pressi. Ask Succotash, or Talia, or somebody - to see about putting the blue gem back on its pedestal," Murphy speaks via his mindlink with his fiancée. "Mountain Giants are coming. I will warn the giants. If they continue the attack, ask Succotash to command it's placement."

Meanwhile he briefly interrupts his stream of thoughts to say words and make subtle whirlwindish motions in the casting of wall of thorns - forming a 10'x10'x10' spiked wall which will rip apart, and certainly slow, anyone trying to get past it. It is similar to the one that Bliss cast, only twice as thick, and about 130' in curved length. Someone may bypass it by walking on the spike growth, hurting and hobbling them. [Pardon the clumsiness of the drawing. The thorns look like about 7' wide - it should be 10' wide. My drawing time is limited, along with my skill.]

He flies up and northward. In the giant tongue, he uses the full power of the air and the wind in which he dances, and booms forth:

"G I A N T S ... T U R N ... B A C K ... N O W
O R ... F A C E ... Y O U R ... D O O M
F R O M ... S M A L L
A N D ... L A R G E"

He punctuates his warning by releasing hill giant C (which takes 14 hp from buffeting unless he saves Reflex DC 26) in such a manner that he lands half in thorns, half on spikes. From falling, and from that upon which he falls, the hill giant takes about 45 hp damage (rough calculation, subject to what the HG's AC is through the thorns). That may or may not kill him - but good luck getting out of the thorns and spikes alive. Murphy blocks his heart from pity for now. That giant would have had no pity on any he encountered. Murphy is at 115' to 165' altitude, 50' in height.

Map #1 is always the top map. When in doubt, use the top map. You'll see the number 1 way over on the far left lists of maps, number 2 to the left of the one below it, etc.

Also you can look at the date on the left side of the map towards the top.

Pressi lobs another incendiary toward 7 and 6, perhaps also catching 4 and 8 as well. Not the best aimed shot perhaps - hit AC 19, but it exploded quite well - damage 27, burning 6 rounds.

She 'hears' Murphy recommending the blue gem that powered that crazy aggro machine they had to fight into submission. "Sigh - yes, I thought 'sigh.' Don't know if Succo will go for that. But mountain giants... yeah, I'll check." "Okay, you," she asks her helper. "Go ahead and load and fire. Do your best. I'll be back."

Pressi hustles off to talk with the Pilot.

Bliss continues to cling to the Iron Giant and to lash out at any giants within 20 ft of his tentacles. If the giant is targetting giants B, 8, and 4, then of they are dead Bliss can likely swing at 6 and 7? I'll let the DM move the giant, as wll as Bliss sticking to it and Mookie flying nearby.

Bliss calls up to Sir Succotash (Message spell): "Doing great, sir! Just please do not walk through the Mind Fog!"

Mookie uses total defense (AC37) plus mirror images.

Pressi stops herself from going to talk with the pilot (Succotash) because she remembers that Succotash cannot interact with her directly.

(If Kim meant the encompassing mind, she tries to find a better way to communicate as she considers the pros and cons of using the blue gem. She's loyal enough, though, to pass along Murphy's message regardless.)

Succotash makes it clear that Tiana is not to insert that blue gem.

Miss Tiana wishes me to inform you that she was just asking.
Then she said "jeez," whatever that means.

He then steps on three giants, killing HG4 and knocking down the other two. Miss Piggy attacks, but doesn't connect.

Kezzem aims and sends a ballista bolt through two giants (HG4 is dead). SG4 and SG-B both die outright.

Talia brings some assistance to the party, then throws some magic tentacles down.

OOC: Like Kim said, use the top map. Also, you control your own summons. I need to know where you are as well. Are you on the Iron Giant's shoulders w/ Kezzem and Pressi? If so, you're 200' in the air.

Pressi lobs some fire at the giants before running off to talk to Succotash. She sees SG8 burn to death before she goes. She can't communicate with Succotash directly, but she can yell loud enough for the Encompassing Mind and Tiana to hear if she sticks her head inside the Giant.

Bliss continues lashing out at nearby giants. Of those in range, only SG-A is still alive. Well, he WAS alive before Bliss pummeled him to death.

Murphy summons a wall of thorns to prevent (or at least discourage) giants from escaping that way. He then warns the giants of their impending doom before he carries the long-suffering HG-C over to the spikes he's laid out. The giant lashes out, managing to connect with Murphy in the process.

Nat 20 (crit failed) for 16 damage.

Then, Murphy drops the thing. Between the buffeting and fall damage, HG-C bleeds out rapidly.

More giants join the frey, including several fire giants.

OOC: Reusing numbers again, but all giants in the top three rows are new.

Stone giants 6, 7 and B make a break to the west, deciding to take the long way around.

Stone giant 9 and hill giants 1 and 3 realize they're in trouble, so they do the only thing they know: charge the squishiest, closest thing they can find. In this case, that's Miss Piggy.

HG3 charges, blocking the rest of the giants from behind able to do so. It's a solid attack, hitting AC 32 for 20 damage.

HG1 moves into position, granting Bliss an AoO. Its attack can't catch the nimble pig. SG9 tries the same thing with similar results.

If the giants are phased by Murphy's warning, they don't let on. Truth is, they have the numbers to wear our defenders down. Are they aware of how close Tiana is to finishing? The tower glows brighter by the moment...

Murphy notes that the giants pretty much ignored his warning.

He casts ice storm so as to encompass fire giants 3, 4, 6 & 6, and stone giant 4. Great magical hailstones pound down upon casting this spell. Those inside take 3d6=10 hp blugeoning damage, and 2d6=6 hp cold damage. For fire giants, perhaps double the cold damage to 12hp?

As the druid descends diagonally downward he telepaths to Pressi, "Tell Encompassing Mind that the giants were warned about their doom should they continue. They have ignored the warning. Ask her to tell Succotash & Tiana that, and Murphy STRONGLY recommends the blue gem be placed. Mountain giants coming - no time for niceness. And that the tower is beginning to glow nicely from the top, and the glow is spreading downward."

Toward the end of his descent Murphy whirlwind slams Stone Giants B, 6 & 7. In order to reach #6, his vortex drops to 10' above the base level of the ground - thus slipping slightly below the level of the ramp (about 12.5' high), and therefore kicking up a whole mess of debris - rocks, dirt, grasses - obscuring sight, even darksight (total concealment).

The stone giants need Reflex DC 26 to avoid the slam damage (SG B: 21hp; 6: 13hp; 7: 25hp). Each also needs to make the same save or be caught up in the now dusty, dirty, debris-filled vortex. Their perception (and Murphy's) is cut down by the debris field. The cloud obscures all vision, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. Creatures 5 feet away have concealment, while those farther away have total concealment. Any people outside the debris field who attempt to attack Murphy (or the giants inside the field) will have their attacks modified by total concealment. Of course, Murphy can't see out, either, at the moment. The debris field shows on the map as the dark yellow torus

Am going to assign 2d6+8=15 damage against Murphy for his digging so into the soil - mitigated by 10 hp due to stoneskin, for 5hp total. He has no movement left to rise higher this round.

Pressi passes on to the Encompassing Mind the gist of what Murphy asked her to say, shouting: "Yeah, Madame Gem, Murphy says the Mountain Giants are going to be really bad, so if we don't plant the blue gem back in place, they'll knock us over. All right, so I exaggerated what he said. But not by much. Tell Pilot Succotash that the Pilot Murphy said it would be smart to do that, like, now. Don't wait until we regret not doing it. And Tiana should be close enough. Oh, tell her the Tower is starting to light up nicely, from the top and spreading downwards. I gotta go. Always more giants to kill."

She returns to the catapult, and sees what she can do. She can roll a natural 1. She had hoped to crater FG 3, and encompass FG 7 and 4, as well as ST 1. With a nat 1, though... we'll let the DM decide what happened there, including damage, if it occurred at all. "Spent too much time talking, not enough time aiming." Here Comes the Light...

Talia, seeing the struggling efforts to hold off the various giants, until Lady Tiana can finish her work, lets loose another Chain Lightning spell while her summoned Azata lets loose his magical composite low bow at the closest Giants.

Chain Lightning spell to hit Stone Giant #3 first, then arc to Fire Giant 1, Fire Giant 5, Fire Giant 3, then Stone Giant #1, then Fire Giant # 7, Fire Giant #3, Fire Giant # 4, Fire Giant # 6, then Stone Giant # 4, then Stone Giant # 3 for 52 damage. {Excuse the d20 roll ~ was over zealous and missed the d6 button}

Summoned Azata Attack

The summoned Azata Fires his bow at Fire Giants #1 {Hit 17, 9 points damage & #3 hit 28 for 9 point damage}.

Next Spell

As soon as Talia finishes her Spell, she launches another Chain lightning spell at the same group of giants for 50 damage.

Murphy notes the giants ignored his warning, so he brings an ice storm down on the lot.

OOC: Fire giants are vulnerable to cold and take 50% more damage. That'll be 9 in this case.

He strongly suggests placing the blue gem. Does he remember your narrator saying it would be permanent, and that the restored, insatiably violent Encompassing Mind would never let it get removed again? Not trying to sway opinions either way, but it's important to be informed about these things.

Murphy flies over and swoops down onto the fleeing stone giants, bashing and lifting all three into the air. He also makes a mess. SG-B is killed by the attack. The other two are real close.

Succotash and the Iron Giant step over Miss Piggy, bringing the giant's foot down behind the giants 9 and 3 (nat 1 doesn't mean much when you hit everything in a 20' radius. I used the 36 damage from your previous roll again). He then slams HG1.

Giants 9 and 3 are knocked prone.

Kezzem sends a bolt through fire giants 5 and 1, all while singing a catchy song.

Bliss lashes out at HG1 as it passes, but misses (barely - AC 21). He continues lashing at HG1, hitting three times with his tentacles and chomping down once. He holds the bite for a moment, choking the giant until it passes out due to nonlethal damage.

Pressi passes Murphy's message along before running back to the fight. The catapult was wound way too tightly, though. The round sails over the battlefield and into the mass of giants behind those closest. They take a beating from it, but that doesn't help our heroes' immediate situation. It's ok, even the best of us foul things up occasionally.

Talia sends a bolt of lightning zipping around the newly assembled giants. One fire giant avoids the worst of the attack, but the rest get zapped hard. FG5's head is reduced to a fine mist as the lightning arcs straight between the thing's ears.

She then draws from heroic reserves and does the same thing again. This time, all the giants take the full attack. Every stone giant targeted collapses. They're technically still alive, but they're down for our fight, at least. FG1 gets a hole blasted clean through its chest. The rest of the fire giants still stand, but are terribly wounded. Her azata puts an arrow in FG1 for good measure.

Candy sees a line of giants and takes aim. She "hmph!"s a little as her bolt flies harmlessly past all three.

The giants amassed at the top of our map are in a bad place position-wise. The lingering incendiary round will kill several of them, but movement is hampered by Murphy's ice storm. They do the only thing they can: press on and hope to get through this. Fire giants 1, 5, and 2 skirt around the fire and ready attacks against anything coming near. The rest decide to see if they can bash a whole in that thorn wall.

Meanwhile, SG9 and HG3 stand and lash out at Miss Piggy. Both hits are dead on, unfortunately.

Both attacks hit AC 35 for 24 and 25 bludgeoning damage.

As fire giants advance on our halfling defenders on the eastern and western fronts, the halfling army changes tactics. The wall of tower shields opens and dozens of halflings leap forth wielding broad-headed short spears. They bring them down on the fire giants' feet, impaling them and digging into the ground below. Lightly armored halflings equipped with punch daggers follow, leaping and climbing the immobilized giant legs, severing tendons as they go. It's an effective attack, but no so effective that the giants are unable to retaliate. The shield bearers brace their shields at an angle, and several club attacks from the giants are diverted into the earth. Several still find their mark and crack more than a few halfling skulls open.

Elder air elementals continue guarding the flanks of the halfling fronts, but the fire giants don't seem to be valuing tactics much and mostly charge straight ahead. The elementals instead make landfall in their whirlwind forms, throwing up debris and blinding a good section of the giant army.

The tower glows ever brighter. Tiana raises her estimates of success from 95% to 97%.

Seeing Miss Piggy get clobbered, Succotash gets on the intercom, "Piggy, it's time to withdraw back into the iron giant!" Hearing her masters words, Miss Piggy makes a withdraw action and heads back into the Iron Giant, where she hangs out with Harper, in case a giant tries to enter. Hearing Pressi pass on Murphy's request, Succotash answers over the intercom, "We are not putting the Blue Gem back into the encompassing mind! I refuse to force Madam Gem to have to deal with that evil individual, nor do I wish to deal with him!" Succotash then slams and stomps on HG3, FG3, and SG9. Each hit requires a DC 39 fort save of they fall prone.

"Acknowledged," Pressi relayed Succotash's decision back to Murphy. "I'm not quite there yet myself, as long as we can continue our advantage. But we need some way to hold the line. Succotash, is there any way that we can get this giant closer to the fire giants?"

To Murphy, she sends a different message. Honey, I have an idea on how to break the fire giant line. But I need to abandon the catapult and get in front of them. Which means... which means I need you to grab me when I'm on my broom and throw me to the ground as hard as you can. If I'm lucky, I can stop myself overhead, but I don't see many other options.

Bliss is also adamant: "NO WE ARE NOT PUTTING THE BLUE GEM IN!!!"

"I mean really, come on," mutters Mookie. "It's like trying to use the one ring."

Meanwhile, it looks like Giants 9 and 3 and the other 3 are all flanking / attacking Bliss.

Mookie uses acrobatics to move to the far side of Giant 9. Acrobatics check 17. If that fails, Mookie's AC on the defensive is 41.

Then Bliss attacks Giant 9 flanking. He tentacle-hits ACs 27, 27, 24, 34, and 32 (ignoring misses) for 17, 16, 18, 15, and 16.

Mookie aids another on the bite ... rolls a 17 to aid another, and does.

And the bite: AC40 for 32 nonlethal damage.

[Aside from today's DM post, could find no where in the archives where it was said that placement of the blue gem was permanent. Would appreciate the locale of said citation. Without such, I shall assume that the Encompassing Mind just now let us know. Otherwise, Murphy would never have advocated for placement if he understood what was presently laid out. Will figure that Pressi just passed on this info to the druid.]

To Pressi Murphy replies, "Ah, placement of the blue gem is considered a permanent placement? Scratch what I said then. The two gems who form the Encompassing Mind should be more than enough. Oh, Succotash should not take the Iron Giant farther north than the edge of the berm - that's 90 feet from the Tower, and Tiana said no more than 100 feet away."

"I THINK I HEARD YOU, BLISS - I AGREE NOW."

"Press, I'll work my way up to you, but meanwhile I need to pick up and drop off a few giants. Be there for you next round, toots, for the toss attempt. Say, let Talia know I could really use a haste boost when I get up to the Iron Giant's shoulder." [that'll be next round]

Murphy in Motion
The druid in his huge air elemental whirlwind form scoots north and up the ramp, no longer scraping the dirt. On the berm his path intersects the three fire giants there. Each will need to make the DC 26 Reflex save or take #1 FG 23 hp, #5 FG 15 hp, #2 FG 23 hp. The two Stone Giants already caught up in the whirlwind take #6 SG 20 hp and #7 SG 16 hp.

He ascends with as many as he was able to capture to a point partly above the ice storm. He drops SG #6 (24 hp falling damage) & #7 (40 hp fall) on top of FG #4 [placed on map a bit askew so numbers can be read]. SG #8 (dead) deadfalls on FG #7 (35 hp fall).

If he picked up any of the FG from the berm (#1, #2, and/or #5), he drops them. One of them falls upon FG #4 (39 hp fall). If more than 1 FG was caught, the 2nd hits FG #7 (34 hp fall), the 3rd hits FG #7 (36 hp fall). I leave it to good DM Carl to move FG #1, #2, and/or #5 from their spots on the berm to their spots over in or near the ice storm.

He takes advantage of the lightened load, and casts entangle (Reflex DC 26) so as to provide FG #6 and ST #2 with additional diversions in their waning time. It is part in the plant growth area, is bisected by the thorn wall, and comes quite close to the spike growth. The 5'-wide vortex opening is at 100 feet, and the 25'-wide top of the whirlwind is at 150 feet above the ground.

Succotash urges Miss Piggy to retreat, but the heel is closed. Can he open it? Turns out he can! Handy that. The giants are too big to enter anyway, but Succotash undoubtedly closes the heel behind Miss Piggy.

Then, he stomps, and smacks, and basically pummels the giants. HG3 is turned into jelly. FG3 is more of a jam: chunky, but still spreadable. SG9 is stuck to the bottom of the Iron Giant's foot.

Kezzem misses. How unfortunate. Candy keeps quiet, but feels a little better about herself.

Pressi has a plan. Your narrator has no idea where she's going with this, but is intrigued to find out.

Bliss finds all his targets are paste. Succotash was very thorough.

Murphy moves to attack the three giants to the north, all of whom had attacks readied. Two attacks connect, but FG1's swing was laughable bad.

Fire giants his AC 34 and 40 for 27 and 22 damage, respectively.

Then, he swoops over them. All three fail all six of their saving throws and get picked up by Murphy. All three are killed by the buffeting winds. Then, he rains down bodies. The effects are pretty gruesome. Every single giant save FG6 and SG2 are killed.

Pressi takes aim, but Murphy's killed her target. Her original target of FG6 is a valid target, as Murphy is about 50-100' below the catapult. FG6 is blown to pieces by the exploding cannon ball, and SG2 is caught in the blast as well.

Candy takes aim at the only giant left in range, but the attack isn't even close. Maybe Candy has having some beginners luck earlier?

SG2 realizes there's no way he's beating this wall down, so he tries pushing his way through. He fails, barely, and scratches himself up in the process.

More giants arrive near the tower: a combination of fire giants and mountain giants. For those not aware, mountain giants are significantly more powerful than the other three types attacking. They are 45' tall, magic-wielding brutes that can swallow most races whole. These giants are armed with massive, ornately crafted warhammers.

The halfling fronts on both sides fare well. Luckily, the few mountain giants are charging straight down the middle of the battlefield. Good thing, because the armies are no match for them. In fact, the fire giants are almost too much for them. If the Angel Springs army hadn't spent generations training to fight giants, they'd have already been overrun. For now, they hold their own.

Kezzem takes aim, but cannot catch a break. He decides to start using the wooden bolts again.

Talia casts spectral hand. Does she have time to also cast vampiric touch?

OOC: Are you using hero points? You don't need to check first, but you do need to specifically call out that you're using one.

Her azata takes careful aim and plunks an arrow into MG1's chest. Nice.

Bliss takes a little break.

Succotash raises the Iron Giant's hand and unleashed Divine Thunder at the amassed giants. FG1 hides behind FG2, but the rest take the full brunt and clear their heads to find themselves in a pit. He should remember to roll to see when he can use that again.

Pressi sends an incendiary round at MG2, where it explodes against the giant's chest, lighting it on fire. It's very unhappy with this development.

OOC: The i on MG2's marker is for ignited.

Candy doesn't think she can find a solid place to hit the mountain giants, so she aims at the fire giants instead. Still misses her shot, but it's close. She starts getting visibly frustrated.

Eastern and western fronts are currently holding, but the giants have finally noticed the tower is starting to glow. Their mass shifts as they try and get to the tower, but our heroes have made the way too difficult to just pass through easily. The halflings take advantage of the distraction to push an attack, cutting several giants down.

SG2 keeps pushing through the wall of thorns, and succeeds. He arrives scratched and bloody on the other side, but he's past. He still has to contend with plant growth AND an entangle spell, so he's moving real slow.

The fire giants are too injured to risk going through the fire from Pressi's previous shot, so they start an end run around it.

The mountain giants just blink, then reappear behind the party and the Iron Giant!

There is a brief lull in the approaching giants, but more are coming.

With her empathic link, Pressi imbues a desire into Harper a desire for fresh air, such a desire.

With the door to the iron giant swinging open, Harper bounds outside and immediately sits, watching as the giants pass through the mind fog.

"Do I really have to specify the term 'get closer' people?"

With a heavy sigh - and a recognition that if she immolates the tower, Tiana will keep whining about it - she leaps off the giant, broom in tow.

Moving straight down, and then towards the tower, she inevitably finds herself within 240 feet of the mountain giants (themselves 45 feet tall) and closing fast.

Her mouth opened but nothing came out. Darkness began to cloud her vision, her pupils fading. She continued to fly, closer and closer.

Apologies for the late post. Walked away from a family thing last night to a work thing this morning.

***

Bliss charges at MG2...somehow. How does an octopus charge over land? Your narrator would love to see that. Either way, the mountain giant gets an ankle full of octopus beak.

Kezzem swivels, smites, takes aim at, and clobbers MG1 with a wooden ballista bolt. It very nearly kills the giant, but these things are tough.

Succotash brings the Iron Giant's foot down, clipping MG2 and knocking it down.

Talia sucks 21 points of life out of MG1. Her azata's arrows bounce off the giant's tough hide, though.

She then quickly throws some black tentacles at the giants. Both are stuck by the things.

OOC: Don't forget to roll damage on the tentacles, JP.

Gerry has a series of very interesting rolls. Seeing how close to death MG1 is, Gerry cracks it right in its ankle, breaking it and causing the giant to plummet down and impale itself on the thorn wall. It seizes a bit as it bleeds out. Gerry repeats the attempt on MG2 to lesser effect.

Harper needs some fresh air, so she bounds outside when Miss Piggy heads in.

Pressi leaps off the Iron Giant onto her broom. She flies towards the remaining mountain giant, both of them going blind.

Candy sends a wooden bolt at FG1. It's a great shot, tearing the giant's arm off at the elbow and showering it with shrapnel. The giant dies quickly of shock.

Erbin sweats bullets carrying the ballista bolts between Candy and Kezzem. He's breathing real hard, but not slowing down.

MG2 is blind and a little injured, but it remembers where the huge tower right next to it was. It stands and swings once. The sturdy stone tower absorbs some of the damage, as do the vines Murphy grew over it, but the structure still shudders.

MG2 does 15 damage to the tower. It's still sturdy.

The fire giants are heartened by seeing the tower damaged and charge. All of them run through the mind fog and get stupid, which explains why they blunder into the black tentacles. FG5 avoids the tentacles and smashes its club against the tower, doing another 14 points of damage to it.

SG2 makes slow and steady progress away from here.

Off to the east, the giants start to push into the assembled halflings. Murphy takes note and whirlwinds over, picking up and throwing the giants spearheading the push.

More giants arrive on the battlefield, this time taking care to approach away from the fire and ice.

Edit: Realized MG2 had to stand and couldn't make a full attack on the tower.

Bliss sees no need to move closer ... it looks like Mountain Giant 2i or Fire Giant 3 are in reach. Please apply my attacks to whichever is still standing.

8 Tentacles hit ACs 17, 20, 21, 25, 16, 23, 19, 20
(Most of these would normally miss, but against blinded foes Bliss gains a +2 to hit and the enemy loses any dex bonus to AC. Also, if they are grappled by the Black Tentacles, they may be easier to hit?)

Kezzem sends a bolt at MG3. The giant raises its massive warhammer and blocks it, sending splinters flying.

Gerry is on fire today, pounding FG5 once. Pressi throws a confusion spell around where the mountain giant is. Mountain giants are pretty brainy, though, and it easily shrugs it off. FG3 and FG5 are both effected, though. Is Gerry affected by the confusion effect as well?

Bliss pounds and bites FG3 once. Not his best showing, but it's enough. FG3 faints clean away.

Succotash sends divine thunder at the newcomers, all of whom are affected and find themselves in a new crater.

Talia sucks some health from MG1 as her azata puts an arrow in it.

Candy doesn't think she can hit the mountain giant with a ballista bolt, but maybe she'd have better luck just getting it inside an explosion from the catapult. She runs, and lets loose a loaded explosive catapult charge. It flies way over the giant, and the tower (nat 1).

FG5 is confused, and lashes out at the closest combatant: Gerry. It hits AC 26 for 12 damage.

MG2 has no idea who's around him, so it keeps beating on the tower. Four solid hits whack the tower for a total of 81 damage. It's still standing and solid, but it can't take that forever.

FG4 approaches Bliss, who gets an AoO. It swings once, hitting AC25 and missing. FG2 also approaches Bliss, who gets an AoO if he has combat reflexes, but gets caught in Talia's tentacles.

Talia should be rolling black tentacle damage.

FG6 and FG1 advance. FG1 shrugs off the mind fog effect. MG3 and MG4 also advance, avoiding the mind fog entirely.

No new giants arrive, but they're still coming. Off towards the east, Murphy is coming back hot. Looks like he's carrying someone.

As Murphy returns, he brings with him a familiar halfling, one with a cowboy hat and dragonskin boots. He has at his waist a dragonskin quiver and in his hand is a bow that would be instantly recognizable to any who have seen it in action.

Murphy drops the halfling onto the Iron Giant's shoulder, and the archer immediately moves to the best vantage point from which to rain destruction on the giants. He seems unnaturally sure footed, as if some magic keeps him stuck to the metal behemoth(Spider Climb).

Talia sends some scorching rays at MG2. Her azata can't get a shot to stick in the giant's hide. The black tentacles squeeze the fire giants.

OOC: Spectral hand can only cast touch spells, not ranged touch spells. You can still target the giant yourself, though.

Succotash hammers MG2 twice. Between that and the lingering flames from Pressi's earlier attack, it finally falls.

Kezzem continues firing on MG3, this time nailing the giant's upper thigh. It roars in pain as the bolt shreds its way through the giants hide and explodes into shrapnel. Blood pours from the wound. The giant's in a bad way, but it still lives.

Pressi hears her target wail in pain. When she goes to grab on, she finds her target missing.

Hobie makes an entrance before Murphy flies back off to help the eastern front. A lightning-bolt infused arrow hits FG1 in the forehead before the spell fries what's left of his brain. The bolt arcs to the two mountain giants behind it. MG3 is looking rough

FG5 is still confused and lashes out at the nearest target: Gerry, hitting AC 40 for 14 damage.

FG2 and FG4 double-team Bliss. They strike 3 times each, but only hit twice.

Hit AC 33 for 24 damage
Hit AC 31 for 28 damage

Both mountain giants and FG6 advance. MG3 easily shrugs off the tentacles and makes it within range of the tower, hitting it once with its massive warhammer for 9 damage after hardness.

Candy takes aim with her catapult behind the attacking giants, and catches all the fire giants and MG 4 in the blast for 67 damage. All the fire giants are killed!

Which is good, because here come more. Though only 11 rounds of combat have happened here, the combat has been raging for over half an hour. The halfling armies are holding, but barely. Off to the west, a fire giant grabs a harassing air elemental by the base of its whirlwind and pulls it back down. Several other giants gather to beat the life out of it, then move to put more pressure on the halfling's flanks. There are more than enough giants out there still to overwhelm the defenders if given enough time, which isn't much.

The tower, though, is glowing brightly. The voice of the Encompassing Mind fills the cockpit.

Pilot Succotash, Tiana has asked me to inform you that the ritual will be complete in five minutes.
So maybe stop letting those things beat on it? Our thing isn't going to fix it if it's all the way broken.
Those are her words, not ours, Pilot.

Waaaaay over to the west of the map, SG2 is almost got away.

Seeing his inability to get closer to the tower without risking stepping on his friends, Succotash gets on the intercom and says, "Please concentrate, your attacks on the two Mountain Giants that are attacking the Tower, we can't recharge the tower if it's destroyed, and by the way is sounds as if we only have to hold these beasts for another 5 min or so!" He then aims a divine thunder at fire giants 1-4, and mountain giants 1-3 causing 98 damage DC 39 reflex for half.

AoO against FG4 from the Sunday DM Post (Bliss does not have combat reflexes):
Bliss bites with his sharp octobeak but rolls a nat 1. No AoO that time!

Last Round (if the kindly DM allows the full round of attacks)

Mookie flies around FG4 to flank. He probably provokes AoOs to do that ... his Acrobatics check to avoid AoOs is a 14. Note that he has five mirror images up and has an AC43 using full defense.

Bliss attacks FG4 with tentacles and hits ACs 17, 24, 20, 23, 34, 34, 17, and 32 for 18, 15, 16, 18, 18, 17, 18, and 17 damage respectively.
He bites vs AC29 for 29 nonlethal damage.

This Round

If FG4 is dead, Mookie flies to flank FG2.

Bliss attacks with tentacles and hits ACs 32, 31, 33, 18, 32, 24, 17, and 34 for damage 17, 16, 17, 16, 16, 17, 18, and 16.

Bliss bites vs AC32 for 25 nonlethal.

NOTES:
- If Bliss drops a flanked foe and switches over to the other, please downgrade ACs hit by two with loss of Mookie's flanking bonus.
- HP damage for Bliss tracked in header.
- I seem to have made a mistake in my header; Bliss's AC is 27 raging, not 29. I searched the DM die results fields and I did not see any attack rolls vs AC27 or AC28 in rounds that Bliss was under attack, so I think no swings on Bliss that missed were actually hits (whew). Sorry header fixed.
- My first two attacks rolled this round were at +13. They should have been at +15 flanking, and I fixed the results field.

Talia Spies the Mountain

Using her perception, she chooses the most dangerous of the Mountain Giants to destroy! Mountain Giant #3! {Skill Check: Perception: 28 (NAT 20)}

Spying the situation, Talia casts FireBall at Stone Mountain #3 dead center of his back (20 feet down from the top of it's head) if facing towards the tower, or dead center of its chest (20 feet down from the top of it's head) if facing away from the tower. Damage = 10d6 = 38 points of damage. Spell expands outward 20 feet in a sphere.

Remembering the Catapult Ammo

Talia recalls what was said about the Catapult ammo: "Catapult ammo is much smaller than one would expect, and easily able to be handled by a single person. There are standard looking metal balls, as well as glass balls with an oily substance inside. Explosive rounds: 10d10 damage in 30' radius, Incendiary rounds: 6d8 damage in a 30' radius, burns for 1d6 rounds. Enemies damaged burn for 3 rounds after they exit the AoE.

Talia then barks at the people supplying ammo for the catapult and the ballistas; "I need 13 pieces of the Catapult ball ammo: 7 of the metal balls & 6 of the glass balls ammo. "

Using another Hero Point, Talia begins casting the Spell, Telekinesis, with the idea that she will send all 13 balls hurling towards the enemy using the Violent Thrust option within the spell towards the closest Mountain Giant that can cause the Tower damage.

{Violent Thrust: Alternatively, the spell energy can be spent in a single round. You can hurl one object or creature per caster level (maximum 15) that are within range and all within 10 feet of each other toward any target within 10 feet per level of all the objects. You can hurl up to a total weight of 25 pounds per caster level (maximum 375 pounds at 15th level).}

Black Tentacles

This round, everything grappled by the Black Tentacles takes 5 points of damages, and are grappled.

Spell length is 13-1 rounds. The CMB for the black tentacles is 13 + 4 + 1 = 18. The CMD = 28 to escape the tentacles. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the spell lasts.

Summoned Azata Attack

The summoned Azata Fires his bow at same Mountain Giants Talia is attacking {Hit 32 (NAT 20); confirmed attack 15 for points 13 damage if not a critical & 39 if it is critical & second arrow hit 23 for 12 damage}.

"Hey Hobbie's back!" says Kezzem.

He uses his mental link to communicate with Rumpus. "Hey Rumpus, Hobbie's outside the giant. Go fetch him, would you boy? I have a great idea that's just crazy enough to work."

He sees Candy's catapult take out a group of fire giants. "That still only counts as one!" he shouts at her.

Assuming Talia is able to finish off Mountain Giant 3, Kezzem turns his aim on Mountain Giant 4 and activates his third smite evil against these tough mountain giant.

Attack MG4: 1d20 + 22 = 35.
Damage: 20d10 + 11 = 111.
Bleed Damage: d10 = 9.

Bleed Damage SG3 (if still alive somehow): 3.

Rumpus meanwhile exits the giant and makes his way over to Hobbie. He gestures for Hobbie to mount him.

OOC: Welcome back Nick!

My crazy idea to get you up to the ballistas. If you get on Rumpus, Kezzem can next round use his ability to summon his mount to his side to quickly get you on top of the giant. Whether or not this actually works is a DM call as I'm not seeing anything about whether you can or cannot transport additional creatures using this ability. The ballistas themselves allow you to make a single ranged attack each round (we have helpers to handle reloading) for 20d10 damage plus 1d10 bleed damage (wooden bolts) or 15d10 with 10d10 damage in a 30' line (metal bolts). They are ranged attacks so maybe you can add your arcane archer stuff to them too!

Hobie notices the Stone Giant running toward Humble's Ford. He clicks his heels, and does what he does best.

In six seconds, six arrows go flying toward the Stone Giant. The first two sail over his head, but as the archer gets dialed in the next four might have a chance to hit.

My range increment is 220ft so I should be able to reach him in the first increment.
Also, because I've played pathfinder before, I know Stone Giants don't have resistance to Cold or Fire, so for simplicity's sake I'm just rolling 4d6 instead of rolling those separate, but if this Stone Giant is different for some reason just let me know and I'll reroll

ooc: For Kezzem's idea: The arcane archer's abilities describe that I can place my spells on "an arrow." So it would be a Carl's decision whether this could apply to a ballista bolt.

Unless he says it would, I think Hobie will stick to his own bow. I did some math, and because a lot of my abilities are longbow specific, Hobie is much more accurate with the bow than he would be with a ballista, and can even do more damage if at least four out of 6 arrows hit

But if I can do Arcane Archer stuff to the ballista bolts then that's a whole different story.

DM Ken - Danger on the Winds.. The Map
Tuesday August 27th, 2019 8:00:17 PM

Succotash's divine thunder claps through the giant. It stutters and holds its ears for a long moment, then drops to its knees and sinks into the mud of the field. Several others quickly run to take its place, stepping on and over the fallen warrior, but not for long.

Talia's mind thrust sends 13 of the explosive rounds flying through air, until the first explodes. Each detonation sets off another, and each one builds upon the blast of the one before it. A thick cloud of smoke hangs in the air... and when it clears, 3 more giants lay slain by the blast, and their brethren are weary for the moment to fill the gap.

The gate too, seems to have taken some damage.

"Pilot Succotash, please inform Talia that tactic is not good for the structural integrity of the tower. It has been weakened significantly."

Meanwhile, Kezzem considers sending Rumpus to collect Hobie, but figures that if he summons his mount back to his side, he would get the pig, and leave the rider on his lonesome. Hobie however, seems to have things under control on his own. His arrows pierce the stone giants vitals, and leaves it bleeding in the dirt.

Bliss continues his point defense at the outside of the giant, and manages to overwhelm one enemy completely. The giant falls, choked of life, at the long arms of the warrior-octopus.

Pressi dismisses her own blindness, but finds there's no one around to inflict with pain.

With all immediate foes slain, there is a small window to pause, and catch your breath.

In the moment of pause, time slows for the weary group. The iron giants systems hum loudly, and even the giants are nervous to rush forward after Talia's latest show of force. Slowly, things begin to ramp up once more.

A few new giants begin to encroach again from the northwest, goaded on by boasts of a large stone giant. Within the Iron Giant, Succotash feels a pang of uncertainty in his link.

(OOC note: in general, I try to metagame/take hints only to the extent that I can reverse engineer what Pressi might observe or reason. In this case, Succotash's warning is the only reason I can think of why she'd ever look for auras, particularly while standing in a ton of spells and magical objects.)

DM Ken - Danger on the Winds.. The Map
Saturday August 31st, 2019 11:50:17 AM

Friday DM Post, delivered late in the Saturday AM.

Succotash asks his friends for help. There's a problem, and he's not able to identify it from his position. Piggy helps fight the stone giant.

Pressi responds by activating detect magic. Her vision is flooded with colors, but the Iron Giant is what she focuses on. While the entire thing radiates magic, there are lingering auras of transmutation and conjuration, both in the air above the iron giant, and near the giants arrow slits at the shoulder level.

Talia, Kezzem, and Hobie continue to suppress the giants wave after wave. As some fall, more replace them. Many seem intent on making it to the tower, but the heroes have formedan impressive zone of physical defense and ranged suppression.

-------------------Giants-----------------------------

Another wave of giants, this time a tribe of Hills, thunders to the field. Two break south from the Ice Storm, worse for the experience.

----------------------------------------------------------

Inside of the Giant, Succotash continues to pilot. He brings the mechanical limbs down on an enemy, pleased with the results. As he looks for a next target, once more he is interrupted.

"Pilot Succotash, are any of your allies on board? Several doors have been opened and closed, using successful passcodes."

So, OctoBliss schlurps over to the Iron Giant, scales one leg, and moves around to the front of it (move action with cloak of arachnida for climbing expertise, in addition to suckers!) Clinging to the Iron Giant's shin, he triggers his Bramble Armor (free action) and thorny spikes poke out of his Octohide. Pressi watches as aura after aura appears, Succotash’s voice rising through.

And she makes a decision right there, that the giant cannot fall in enemy hands. Not even in the name of fixing the tower.

“Succotash, get the giant close to the rest of the army and away from the tower. Kezzem, get Succotash out of there. Tiana, everyone else, time to wrap up.

“Madam Gem, query. How do I activate your self destruct or disable program. Respond. Second query. What happens if someone runs their chain straight through a power gem. Respond.”

Pressi continues with a cast of spectral hand, followed by touch of idiocy.” (Hero point spent)

As often happens in the field, multiple orders begin to fly among the fighters.

Kezzem and Miss Piggy move to secure the head. Succotash refuses to give up the pilots seat, and gives his mount orders to follow Kezzem.

Bliss and Hobie, seemingly worried about the giants, maintain superiority outside of the giant.

Pressi, unwilling to give up the titan to the enemy, orders a self destruct sequence. Soon, she receives a reply.

"Response one. It simply needs to be ordered, and calculated with the giants current capacities. Response to second query. It's likely the giant would shut down, possibly permanently. There are no tested parameters for such an action."

--------------Giants---------------

One of the Hill Giants takes Bliss's bait, and charges into the reach of the octopus-warrior. It fails to harm the Eldritch Knight, and is now in his melee range. A second one stumbles into his range, and his club connects squarely with the octo-knight. (hits ac 35 for 20 damage.)

Another giant stops and looks around. He's come down with a case of the stupid, but still understands the concept of smash a glowing tower.

Another group, led by the Stone Giant, rushes around the south to angle towards the tower.

[OOC: In the spirit of talk around the gaming table, I hope this is okay. Bliss does not understand what is going on, but are you saying that Pressi is trying to self-destruct the Iron Giant?!? BEFORE THE TOWER IS REPAIRED??? Wait, wait wait. This is so wrong on many levels. First, WHY?? The giant is not close to being destroyed or taken away is it? Plus Succotash is embedded! I just do not understand! Is there any way Bliss can act on this, or does he remain ignorant?]

Bliss says "Oof!" as he takes a lumpen. He decides to start fighting defensively, and not to use his power attack. That's a net +3 AC -1 attacks, -3 damage (-6 bite damage).

8 tentacles: ACs 17, 18, 22, 19, 21, 15, 15, and 18 ... for 12, 13, 14, 13, 12, 14, 14, 12

1 bite: AC30 for 23 nonlethal damage.

Mookie stays next to Bliss and uses his Aid Another to boost AC ... a roll of 27 boosts Bliss's AC for the first attack against him by +2 to 32.

Succotash turns and aims a Divine Thunder at Stone giant 1 and fire giants 4-6, being careful to avoid making contact with the tower. each one takes 107 damage (DC 39 reflex for half). Meanwhile, Miss Piggy waits patiently for Kezzem to summon Rumpus. She is however on guard and has a ready action to attack any threat that may expose it's self. (Hits AC 23 for 17 piercing and 6 shock damage)

Succotash gets on the horn again and says, "I'm not ready to give up yet, the tower is almost repaired, and we still have defenses in the giant!" He then asks Madame Gem if there are any Guardian constructs operational, and if so he asks her to activate them to assist Kezzem, Miss Piggy, and Rumpas.

Pressi scoffed back at Bliss. “First, how do you know how close they are to destroying the tower or taking the giant. Second, because who knows what happens when a giant army and whatever casters they work for get ahold of that thing. So you’ll excuse me if I’d like to not cut it too close.

“Especially with these durran giants that won’t stop attacking the tower or losing the ability to attack even if someone tied them up for a courtesan special.”

Pressi fires a contagion at the giant closest to the tower.

“I mean, I don’t even know how they are getting past the giants anti magic field, but it’s not through the back door. And the giants below might as well be constructs... or hypnotized...”

Pressi continues to detect magic on the giant but also the fire giants below.

Gerry and Harper attack any giant they can reach.

--Outside the Giant--

Talia continues to explore the powers of telekinesis. Her DM assumes she is targeting the ground with all the items, as per the spell each item thrown needs an attack roll, and she gave him none. Only 1 item was a critical failure, and is assumed to miss the spot. The results are 3 stuck giants, one who is deafened, and for the sake of sanity, 5 points of splash damage each.

Bliss is a flurry of tentacles and anguish, like a late night 18+ anime. More of his attacks hit than he would have expected, aided by the sticky goo on the giants. One of them falls from its wounds, bleeding on the ground.

Pressi afflicts the giant closest to the tower, the only one remaining, with a contagion spell. Her DM does not see a listed saving throw, so he is currently assuming a 19 from the giant is enough to succeed. (10+3+5 or 6 stat?)

--Inside the Giant--

Kezzem summons Rumpus to his side.

Succotash and Pressi exchange words. Succotash isn't ready to give it up. They are close to victory, he knows, within 5 minutes, and he isn't ready to abandon all hope. The encompassing mind addresses them both.

"I am required to follow the commands of the acting pilot. Succotash, in case of an emergency, I can meld my consciousness with the tower. The giant will forever lose all function, and I will lose my sense of consciousness and perception. This option requires extreme focus on both my end, and that of the pilot. Please advise in advance."

----------------------------------------------------------------

Enemy Actions.

The door to the pilots room slides open with a deceptively peaceful "swoosh." The doesn't seem to be much in the way of immediate commotion. About the time Kezzem and Succotash would get curious, Kezzem feels a sharp pain in his side, and Miss Piggy squeals in terror! Thick bruises suddenly appear on her flanks, welling with blood.

Kezzem too, feels a sudden impact as he is slammed by an unseen blow to the back of his head.

Bliss: You are correct, I forgot. Its a fight with a lot of moving parts, my mistake is your gain! The giants stare dumbly at Bliss. There are plenty more giants, but the next wave has to come from a bit away. Your kindly dm gave you a d4 kept secret.

Kezzem: No, There were 6 total attacks, some on your pilot, some on your pig.

Hobie: Melvin is correct. However, it is totally okay to assume that among your magics and abilities, relaying a hoods message is pretty much automatic. However, please note it was explained that the giant is warded against teleports and extra-dimensional travel.

---Outside the Giant---

Bliss mauls another giant, with Mookies help. He is return attacked, but the giants miss and their clubs thud against the hull of the Iron Giant.

Talia singes the giants with magical bolts. Her constant pestering seems to have caught the eye of a giant, which begins fingering a bag of boulders around its waist.

Pressi's idiot fails his save, and tries to grapple his nearbye companion. The DM feels that the companion would be unprepared for this, and has made it flat flooted. Giants 2 and 3 are grappled.

The Stone Giant waves off the tentacles, and begins wailing on the tower for 17 damage.

----Inside the Giant----

Hobie cannot Dimension Door into the Giant. The whole thing is warded against teleportations and conjurations, as his DM noted above. The DM will make a climb check for Hobie, which resulted in a natural 20. Hobie is able to climb in through a window in the cockpit, which is something the DM has handwaived as "probable as not" for this encounter. This is only a move action, since Hobie has Spider Climb up. Hobie has retrieved a glitterdust scroll.

Succotash presumably abandons his pilots chair/station and climbs to his feet. The DM decides that Succotash doesn't really count as being prone, and so no AoO's are provoked. (It looks like you made 4 attacks but labeled 3?)

Per CRB Page 563: "... If an invisible creature strikes a character, the character struck knows the exact location of the creature that struck him ..."

Succotash is surprised to find himself attack upwards towards the ceiling! His attacks suffer a 50% miss chance. His DM always says higher is better, so all three attacks hit. Miss Piggy attacks where she was hit from, above her as well, but comes up empty handed.

Kezzem, not having been hit, did decide he would rely on his companions to find them. Rumpus finds the enemy easily enough, and gores at the air above her! She seems confused however, when she feels no foe. (Pinpointing a creature does not negate the miss chance. It just means she doesnt have to get hit to find it.)

Kezzem attacks more or less the same space as Piggy. He feels his second slice meet resistance.

Three unknown enemies fight back!

??? 3: continues to attack Succotash. He is hit on AC's 28 and 33, and he is flat footed. He takes 15 and 11 damage.

??? 1: continues to attack Succotash. He feels two heavy thuds on his armor, but otherwise takes no damage.

???2: continues to attack Piggy. She is crit and confirmed on AC 34, and takes 19 total damage.

??? ?: chants a spell from outside of the room. Soon after, the cockpit descends into total and complete darkness.

--------COMBAT SANITY--------------

DM Note for our Paladins: None of the combatants in this room are of evil alignment.
DM Note: Invisible enemies may have moved! since the most recent pinpoint listed above!
DM Note: In battle, it is a perception check DC 25 to pinpoint an enemy inside of the head. Scent works as listed, ie a move action to pinpoint an enemy within the head.

??? 1: 68 Damage - Last located above Rumpus, attacking Succotash.

Feel free to move yourselves, but understand you might have Aoos on you.

To Hobie: Your kindly DM isn't trying to screw over your glitterdust scroll. He is following a scripted combat plan. Hobie knows that glitterdust won't help much unless the darkness spell is removed. Your DM had to think about this one, but settled it this way. If he were rolled in glitter, he would sparkle. Turn out the lights in a dark room, and glitter or not, you couldn't find him.

Using perception, {Skill Check: Perception:22},

With the Spectral Hand stil floating about, Talia will cast "Acid Arrow" onto FG#1. Melee touch attack(+6 +2) to hit = 14 damage = 3 damage for another 4 rounds.

Black Tentacles #2 | 8 Rounds remain before ending

This round, everything grappled by the Black Tentacles takes 5 points of damages, and are grappled.

Spell length is 13 rounds. The CMB for the black tentacles is 13 + 4 + 1 = 18. The CMD = 28 to escape the tentacles. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the spell lasts.

Black Tentacles #1 | 6 Rounds remain before ending

This round, everything grappled by the Black Tentacles takes 10 points of damages, and are grappled.

The CMB for the black tentacles is 13 + 4 + 1 = 18. The CMD = 28 to escape the tentacles. The entire area of effect is considered difficult terrain while the spell lasts.

The hand is incorporeal and thus cannot be harmed by normal weapons. It has improved evasion (half damage on a failed Reflex save and no damage on a successful save), your save bonuses, and an AC of 22 (+8 size, +4 natural armor). Your Intelligence modifier applies to the hand’s AC as if it were the hand’s Dexterity modifier. The hand has 1 to 4 hit points, the same number that you lost in creating it.

Kezzem will attempt Detect Evil (move action).

"Well, not evil so probably not undead. Better not to a burst channel then."

He uses a standard action to cast Cure Moderate Wounds on Succotash.

As the black tentacles shake and shiver, a black nose begins to poke through. Harper, she of high speed and decent CMD, decides to try to make her way through. (Double move over difficult terrain.)

Tail wagging and eyes slotted, she lets out a low growl (Intimidate 22). Slowly, she circles, moving around the giant until she is almost near the tower. Almost as if she was getting into position.

With a whirr, longsword drawn, Gerry bursts through the tentacles, reaching the stone giant on the other side.

Harper chooses to start growling at Gerry.

Bliss bloops over five feet as Mookie flies around to flank. In his penultimate round of focused attacks [OOC: That's how Bliss considers/reskins his barbarian rage power], Bliss resolves to make the most of it and let the clubs fall where they may. Bliss sends a telempathic pulse to his old friend. "GO! FIGHT! WIN!" sends OctoBliss to Mookie.

Mookie caws and laughs. "I'm off the leash, stupid giants!" he cries. Flanking, Mookie attacks a giant with a beak and two talons. He hits ACs 32, 21, and 22 for 5, 5, and 5. Note that Mookie's AC drops to 37 and he has five mirror images. "I gotta get some damage buffs," mutters Mookie.

Bliss himself attacks, and his AC drops to 27 since he is using power attacks but not fighting defensively. Thus his attacks are ... +9BAB +9Str +3 divine favor +1 amulet +2 flanking -3 power attack -1 size = +20 on a bite, that is, +15 with tentacles, since they are secondary attacks.

As he does every round, Bliss activates his Arcane Strike as a swift action for +3 damage.

(Sorry Nick! Waited for that Hobie post!)

---Outside the Giant---

Talia continues her harassment of the giants. Its skin crackles and pops.
Pressi sends Gerri (please tell your DM who Gerri is? Its a thing that happened while I was away I think.)
Bliss and Mookie work together in tandem, happily spouting nonsense and pulling a hill giant into pieces.
Pressi isn't messing around with the Stone Giant. It starts to immediately suffocate in the first round of the spell. If it fails its next fortitude save, it falls unconscious.

The remaining two giants are suddenly left free to make targeting decisions. One, considerably more stupid than normal, attacks Bliss, since he is closest. It hits AC 31 for 19 damage.

The second throws a boulder at Talia, but misses.

-----Inside of the Giant-----

Rumpus finds her foe, but comes up with nothing on her attack. Kezzem lays hands on himself.

Succotash casts defensively, but fails. Since he failed, he loses the spell. He does not incur any attacks of opportunity. Miss Piggy has some success in defending herself, and hits her enemy once.

Hobie uses a scroll of Glitterdust. All four enemies will be glittery, but saved vs blindness.

???1: slams down on Succotash's armor twice, but to no effect.
???3: also crashes into Succotash, hitting AC's 39 and 37 for 12 and 7 damage.
???2: attacks Piggy again, but her hide is too touch.

???!: crashes into the room, and heavy armor thuds through the darkness. Moments later, Kezzem feels a heavy lump of metal crash into his shoulder. Hits FF ac of 25 for 13 damage and 2 fire damage.

--------COMBAT SANITY--------------

Hobie reaches back into his bag and pulls out another scroll. He targets the darkness spell and casts Dispel Magic. He really feels like he nailed it (Nat 20 for a 26 against DC 11+ spell's Caster Level), and hopefully his friends can now see glittery assailants.

Assuming Bliss outside the Giant does not need to save vs blindness.

This is Bliss's last round of focused fighting, so he makes the most of it. Mookie moves to flank again.

Mookie hits ACs 34, 20, and 16 for 7, 2, and 2.

Bliss's tentacles hit ACs 30, 28, 31, miss, 18, 29, 33, and 24 for 17, 17, 16, --, 15, 18, 17, and 17.

Bliss's bite hits AC22 for 29 nonlethal.

THEN Bliss ends his rage. He takes 26 damage, bringing him to 7. He uses a hero point for an extra action to breathe life back into himself (Witch Life & Death ability, SLA can be used as an octopus!). He cures himself 37 points, bringing himself to 42 total.

---Outside the Giant---

Talia once more deals damage to the same hill giant! (Her DM has been applying her damage to the new maps.) Angry, it stutters forward, then falls on its face.
Pressihightails it to the head entrance of the giant. Harper swats the stone giant, which has fallen unconscious. If it fails its next fortitude save, it dies.
Bliss and Mookie are out of enemies, and he takes a moment to heal himself.

There are shouts from giants some small distance away, but it looks like the party has a moment or two before reinforcements arrive.

**Reinforcements will arrive in 3 rounds-**

Finally, as if to break the sudden peace, the door to the heel of the Iron Giant flies open, from the inside. Nothing comes out.

-----Inside of the Giant-----

When the darkness is dispelled, those up top find themselves in a swirling melee. Three glittery elementals, Invisible Stalkers to those who recognize them, are flying above the halflings. A stout dwarven female, whose shield is emblazoned with the holy symbol of Scald, curses as her strategy is ruined by a simple dispel scroll.

Hobie: dispels the darkness. He also hears many sounds coming from below, down the hatch below him. He hears what sounds like spellcasting, but without line of sight, cannot identify the spell.

Kezzem finds himself engaged with one of the elementals. His daggers do good work, and wispy bits of the creature go flying.

Succotash heals his friends for 26hp. Miss Piggy hooks her tusks into an invisible stalker, and pulls it by down to the floor. Dead, it vanishes back to its own plane.

--------Enemy Actions---------------

Ketia continues to swing her weapon, beating down on Succotash. She is literally on fire, covered by thin blue flames.

"You come like thieves in the night to steal our Iron Giant, now we come to reclaim it! Scald will not be denied his prize!"

She snaps at the last two stalkers.

"The pilot, get the pilot!"

She lays into Succotash with uncanny speed, hitting him on AC 39,27, and 35. Two of those beat his AC of 29, and she deals a total of 37 damage.

The two now-visible stalkers follow orders, slamming into Succotash, but they fail to hurt him. With his ability to dodge foes back in place, he escapes their attacks.

--------COMBAT SANITY--------------

Angered by the accusation of being a thief, Succotash fires back a retort, "I'm no thief, but if you don't surrender, Twinklesting is going to steal your life!" He then clicks his heals together again, activating his boots of speed as a free action, and attempts a full round attack on the she dwarf, followed by a lay of hands as a swift action on himself, healing 20 damage. At the same time, Miss Piggy does a full round attack on #3
