Interlude - The Wedding of Bingo Bumbleluck and May Greenbottle

DM Carl - The Snipe Hunt Concludes!
Thursday September 6th, 2018 2:33:40 PM

Hobie is back in his bed. Aside from enjoying his rest, he gets with Succotash to make sure they have musical accompaniment handled for the wedding.

Zaragosa comments on the odd mix of the group. He had wished to stay longer in Emerald City, but should take some solace in the fact that it's a short trip away. It's very unlikely he's seen the last of it. He and Pressi discuss marriage and family.

Talia decides to move in. An excellent choice, as Humble's Sword will need all the help it can get in the days ahead. She takes some time to learn the ins and outs of Humble's Ford.

Kezzem detects evil on Candy's crew, but is probably not surprised to see none. The BadApples like to cause a rukus, but feel like that's an important part of life in Humble's Ford. They would most certainly take offense to being told they were doing harm to the community! He kindly suggests Murph let them be themselves this time around.

Murphy returns to Humble's Ford in high spirits. The Pipewood family continues its growth throughout the Valley, and he is pleased to see mom and children all healthy. He makes a note to return when he has time and they've grown a bit.

The druid remembers his conversation with the Culverwood, and takes a moment to address the bride's parents.

Let's take an aside, gentle reader, to meet the future first lady of Humble's Ford and her parents. Mayor Bingo Bumbleluck is to marry one May Greenbottle, daughter to Lyle and Ruby Greenbottle. The family hails from Angel Springs, where they run a small custom jewelry shop. Though small, it attracts wealthy clientel from all around the Valley and outlying areas; they do quite well for themselves! Ruby has a reputation for being...difficult, but Lyle considers himself a salt-of-the-earth craftsman and is generally easy to get along with. Still, his business requires no small amount of precision and care. The man does not suffer fools, nor does he take kindly to the slovenly. May herself is a charmer, with the emerald eyes and black hair of her mother, a light dusting of freckles, and dimples that are...well, they're just perfect. Anyone who sees her walking with Bingo in the days leading to the wedding can see straight through his reluctant facade. He is a lucky man, and he knows it.

Back to our story. Murphy addresses her parents, asking about the origins of their wolpertinger feast tradition. Ruby seems annoyed by the questioning, but Lyle is quick to respond. "No great secret, Mr. Pipewood." Of course he knows your name. You're heroes, afterall. "They're delicious. Their meat practically melts in your mouth." It's a simple, but straight forward answer. Murphy propositions them on tempering their feast, owing to the rarity of the species. He even offers a special brew as a replacement. Their reply relies highly on Murphy's diplomatic abilities (which Kim should roll for).

Diplomacy <= 12:

"Now see here, sir. You were given a task and performed it admirably, but I did not ask for a lecture from you." Ruby directs her husband to take the cages and huffs off. Lyle does so with one last glare at Murphy before he follows.

Diplomacy >12 & <= 22:

"I suppose if we want future generations of Greenbottles to enjoy these beasts, it would make sense to protect the species." His face betrays some small hesitation, but his decision is only practical. He selects the two largest wolpertingers and leaves the other for Murphy to handle as he sees fit.

Diplomacy >22:

"I'd heard you like to talk, Mr. Pipewood, and now I see why. Of course, none of us want to harm the species. Select two of the wolpertingers to return, and we'll prepare the others for May's wedding. Ruby and I look forward to your attendance!"

Murphy has more tasks to complete as usual, but he does have an important question for Pressi. Your humble narrator hopes the two are aware of how gouche it is to announce future nuptules at a wedding! Pressi has pondered settling down, but didn't expect Murphy to ask so suddenly. It's no surprise that she doesn't have an immediate answer to his question.

Bliss misses the wolpertingers. They are beasts after his own heart. Maybe if Murphy plays his cards right, he'll have more time with them than he realizes.

Succotash agrees that a jam session at the wedding may be fun.

***

The morning of the wedding soon approaches. The ceremony takes place at the base of the newly constructed Air Elemental Spire, a 120' tall pearly white tower recently constructed at the direction of Murphy and Pressi. It is easily the most breathtaking location in Humble's Ford, and a perfect place for a wedding. Several air elemental guests come to see what the commotion is, playing among the tops of the tower, making their strange music as they fly about the holes on top.

OOC: The entire description of the tower can be found on the wiki.

Vows are exchanged between the nervous couple. He promises to love and cherish. She promises to love and cherish. You've been to weddings before, right gentle readers? You know how this part goes.

Wedding receptions can be quiet, sedate affairs, but if that's what the Greenbottles wanted, they should not have married their daughter off in Humble's Ford. It is a loud, fun day followed by a loud, fun night. The punch bowl is spiked to the point where no one's quite sure what kind of punch was once in it. There is dancing, and singing, and music, and...well, there's some debauchery as well, of course. Candy and the BadApples lay claim to the tower, taking on all challengers who would seek to depose them from their throne. Before the day is up, they can be seem from the top of the spire doing their best to mimic the auran of the small, playful elementals who have joined in the festivities. Heavens forbid they should learn the language and incorporate the elementals into their trickery. Anyone watching the BadApples closely realize they are treating the tower with rare restraint. Not one of them even tries to carve their names in it.

May tops the evening off by downing the remainder of the punch bowl, decking a grabby Pit and laying him out, then passing out and leaving Bingo to carry her off. She is going to fit in just fine here in the Ford. Ruby is horrified, but that's her problem.

It is a night for the record books, but like all nights, it ends. Humble's Ford wakes up the next morning. Many of its citizens trot off towards home. The lucky few find themselves already in their beds (the very lucky find themselves...well, they're elsewhere). Life continues on in Humble's Ford as it always does...

The Unbelievable J.T.T. Zaragosa (Jack) (Jairus Houdek) (AC 24 CMD 22 HP 41) (full spells)
Thursday September 6th, 2018 3:12:00 PM

Zaragosa would smile almost like a smile as Murphey thanked him. it was the first time Jack did anything for the group, "Anything I can do to help, most excellent sir"

To Pressi , Zaragosa responds with "You are free to ramble on and figure these things out. I often talk too much but in truth, I am willing to listen as well. I have very little to offer in advice for this topic, as I am far too focused on other things to have really thought about such life-changing events. However, I am here if you need someone to talk to."

During the wedding, Zaragosa keeps mostly to himself. This would be the kind of event he would love to show off some of his skills to entertain, but this is the mayor's wedding and the Humble Sword's reputation was more important than Jack getting more fame. He would instead talk to only those who would talk to him. He would have one beer and if the party went on long enough and he felt sober enough, he might have a second as well. Zaragosa was still walking on eggshells (figuratively), being more proper than anyone in the debauchery part of the party. He took no changes of making a fool of himself while representing the team.

Bliss | CatBliss (Touch AC27, AC32, HP109) (Cayzle)
Thursday September 6th, 2018 10:28:49 PM

Bliss cannot even CONCEIVE of the concept of making a fool of himself. All he knows is that when authorities tell him not to do something, he stops! I do not suppose anyone will tell Bliss not to drink too much, nor to dance on things (like Succo's drum) and on people (like Mister Murphy), nor to change into a cat and wrestle the bones of a Wolpertinger. Ever since Alleah and Mookie left, Bliss has not really HAD an actual boss to obey. Sometimes that's not okay, but probably no harm will come from this night of festivities.

"Did I ever tell you about the time I won a drinking contest against dwarves?" he asks Jack.

Murphy Leafwin Pipewood Druid 11 (Kim) HP 85/85  d20+13=20 ;
Friday September 7th, 2018 12:19:57 AM

"Thank you kindly, Mister Greenbottle," Murphy says with a respectful bow to May's father at the acquiescence to his request. Murphy thinks if he himself had just a bit more native charm, he might have won the man's heart, along with this contribution to conservation. [Diplomacy 20]

Though he had sent a request to foreman George to build a few cages, he does not know whether the request translated into action - especially since the message went to the Mayor. Once he knows he has the female and adolescent male wolpertingers, he checks to see if a cage was made. If not, "George, have I got a job for you!" He also checks with Primula PipeLeaf to see if she will assist him with the metalwork required for the task. If starting from scratch, since there are only two, he has the cages made larger, and backed against the stone of the huge stone building at the Sanctuary. With the flora he collected from the Culverwood, he plants some of that surrounding the twin cages, and uses plant growth to speed up the process. He checks to see whether a local druid might be enlisted to help care for them - and Hazel, too, a ranger. He puts together a log book, and asks them to keep notes on the critters, to be kind to them, feed them (with, e.g., rabbits, mice, rats, vegetables), and to kick out any who tease or rile them up. Also, he looks to see, since they are in adjacent cages, how they treat with one another. Do the male and female seem friendly, or antogonistic? Any dominance games? For all he knows, the female could be mother to the male, from last year's litter. He does speak to them in simple Sylvan ("you want food?" "you want water?" "can you explain the rationale behind your epistomological claims?"), hoping he can discern whether they understand his words at all.

At the wedding, Murphy tries to ensure that Brock's Best Brew is among the first of the libations to be enjoyed, before everyone is too inebriated to tell just how good it is. He toasts the couple, the respective parents, and the daughter of the groom. However, he pours his drinks shallow - doesn't down more than a total of two regular drinks by the end of the evening if added all together.

As CatBliss wrestles the wolpertinger bones, the druid makes certain there is room for it, wild shapes into a lion and roars at his feline friend, then changes back to himself, and pets CatBliss before shooing him on elsewhere. He permanently borrows some of the bones from one of the creatures, but not the antlers. He knows those will be kept as a memento by the bride and groom, and perhaps the other set by the parents of the bride.

The young halfling is content to await, until she is ready, Pressi's response to what he brought up in her new tower building, and has no desire to steal thunder from the mayor and his new bride.

He speaks in auran to some of the air elementals.
Naet taman kauniin valkoisen tornin. Hyvat ystavani auttoivat, ja olen pitanyt lupaukseni sinulle. Olet auttanut kansani. Kerro hallitsijalle, etta Murphy kunnioittaa hanta. Murphy kunnioittaa kaikkia teita, jotka elavat ilmassa. Rukoilen pitkasta ystavyydesta sinun kansasi ja kansamme valilla Humble's Ford.
A rough translation is:
You can see this beautiful white tower. My kind friends helped, and I have kept my promise to you. You've helped my people. Tell your elder ruler that Murphy respects him. Murphy respects you who live in the air. I pray for a long friendship between your people and our people from Humble's Ford.
When opportunity presents itself, Murphy will help out a couple of the BadApples with Auran pronunciation.

Talia, Jack. Hope you are enjoying yourselves. You too, Hobie! Nice lute music, cousin. No one need be overly shy at a Halfling wedding. Though you might ask Hazel about that back at the Sanctuary." Murphy says with a laugh. "I've never seen a groom quite so tongue-tied as he was that happy day he wed Alouryn!" He looks down a moment, then, with memories setting a lively smile on his face, he adds, "I had to tell him a couple days later just all that went on at his wedding. It wasn't alcohol. It was, perhaps, ecstasy mixed with terror and hope." The lines in his face relax, and he says, "They enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon, though, and are among the happiest in marriage I know." Then he spots the couple dancing, she with her ribbons, whipping them so as to surround him, and Hazel looking strong, in control, until her ribbon tickles his lip, and his laughs uproariously, grabs her by the waist, and dances away with her.

As music and dancing begin, he first asks Pressi for a dance or two - and for her to reserve the last dance for him. He also asks Talia to join him in a lively set - and drops her off with Succotash. "Your turn, drummer boy!" He dances with his sister Leska, and his mother - both at the same time! If she will, he dances with May, and tells her he thinks she is in for a wonderful, lively life here in the Ford. "We'll have to have you and your husband over after things settle down a bit." As others likely want to have the chance to dance with the bride, he spins her off to the next one in line.

He sees his father - and the many people who have come to congratulate him on the beauty of the tower. "Wasn't my idea. Just some of my work, with help from many - including yours - I saw you moving the wheelbarrow over and over. Thank you, though. Say, have you ever heard of a carousel?" is the line of some of Samell's conversations for the evening.

Murphy does ask an air elemental in auran, "Do you mind the few halflings climbing up there this day of joy? I will not allow any to dwell there." If it looks like any are likely to try it, he finds a moment to let Candy know, quietly, "I've promised the air elementals to let no one 'dwell' in the tower. Glad you all are having such a fun time. Only, all down before sunrise, all right? You've got some great climbers."

He sees that all his friends from the Sword make it home safely, sees Pressi to her door, if she will. Kisses her, if she will, then retires to his bed, where he journals for 20 minutes, covers the light, and falls asleep.

In the morning, wakened by what seem to be many dreams, he considers whether to memorize transport via plants, among other things. He decides first to pray wisdom of Eberyon, and for guidance for the day.

When Bliss starts dancing on his drum, Succotash shoes him away lightheartedly saying, “You’re going to mar Bonham’s finish you goof ball”. Of course Succotash partakes in some of the fine ales available, and greatly appreciates Murphy’s contribution, but he makes sure to use moderation, as a Paladin needs to be careful as to what he says and does, but when Murphy drops Talia off indicating that he should dance with her, he loses his cool, and begins to summer like a love sick puppy. “M-miss Talia, I w-would be honored to have th-this dance, I mean if that’s OK with you”. If she agrees, Succotash will be grinning like the cat the got the canary, as he leads the lovely Talia onto the dance floor, if she declines, he will go back to his drumming, and for the rest of the evening keep mostly to himself, and his ale consumption will not a moderate increase.

Of all the people that might rein in Bliss' behavior, Bliss forgets that of his "dark mistress", though the title does not go far as it used to. True, Pressi's reputation of decorum ends at the door of any alcoholic venue. But one could expect her to step in if any teammate went too far.

Tonight was not a night of happy drinking or for policing others behavior. In fact, Pressi typically nursed her drink in the corner.

As always, Pressi had availed herself of some alcohol and fun. She made the rounds to her fellow teammates, wondering if any had heard. She managed to avoid yelling at the mayor for acting like he was being marched to the executioner and getting into everyone's heads. She congratulated the new bride, an acquaintance from her... thieving days? Shopkeep days? Temple member? May turned out to be a better monk than Pressi ever was.

She avoided eating any of the Wolpertingers if offered. She joined in at cleverly insulting the Badapples, leaving the choicest barbs for her follower. She danced a few dances with Murphy, quite adequately if perfunctory. She hung out with her shyer followers, and spoke with a number of her teammates. And she camped at the back of the room, retreating there whenever the noise got too much.

----------------

The day started brightly. Pressi settled back in the tower, helped Talia to her new room, and showed off her latest decorating idea of a gingerbread walled room with candy everywhere. She saw it in "The Witching Hour" quaterly.

From there, she kept busy. Wedding preparations. Guild house preparations. Some quick thanks to the gods. But she spent some time with Murphy, with his family, with friends. And today... with Murphy again to see the new tower they had worked on.

It had been kept light hearted. Lots of flirting and mockery as they raced up the tower. A terrific view from the top. Some much needed privacy. A speech from Murphy to which Pressi hadn't understood the import. And then he asked her that question.

For a while, nobody spoke.

When it became clear that nothing was going to interrupt them, Pressi finally spoke in whatever syllables she could muster. She remembers talking of the sudden question and of the decorum of proposing on someone else's wedding. She talked of needing to think it over. She wondered if she could say anything at this point that would salvage Murphy's feelings, and came up with "I've actually been dead for 20 years."

She finally settled on "I'll tell you the day after the wedding, you know for decorum," and considered a quick use of spells. The walk down the tower was considerably slower.

Murphy did not ask her later to aid him in his diplomacy.

Zaragosa would raise up his mug, which contents were very slowly diminishing, to Murphey when he spoke to him. "Aye! I live for fun of course!"[/b]

Talia will join in a lively set of dancing with Mister Murphy. Dancing is good for the bones! says Talia. Not really knowing this assembled group, especially the wedding couple, Talia is display formal discourse with the attendants to this function. Aside from the merry dancing and the occasional merriment and drink, will keep her wits about herself.

OOC: Yea, I did know that. Not sure why my brain decided to mix that up. I've corrected my last post.

***

Your humble narrator has given his players much to read lately, so today, he's going to give their eyes a rest. Suffice to say that it's heartening to see Humble's Sword come together in celebration. They find themselves with a free day. Pressi has an important question to answer, but that's between her an Murphy.

At the end of a peaceful day, Humble's Sword settles in for a good night's rest.

Which is a good thing, because they are going to want to be well rested for what comes next...

"Jack?! Would you like to dance with me?" asks Talia of Jack. Extending her hand, Talia waits for his reaction. If he takes her hand, she will say to him, "Be gentle, I'm a bit rusty!" If he doesn't take her hand, she will pout and wait for him to do something.

Kezzem finds himself strangely feeling a bit out of place during the festivities, and keeps mostly to himself and seems content to watch his friends and the townfolk enjoy themselves while gradually sipping his drinks. He keeps on eye on little Miss BadApple and crew to make sure they don't get up to too much trouble.

If any members of the Sword join him, he'll turn to them and ask, "When did I get so old?"

“Eh, youth wasn’t doing you any favors. Might as well try something else.”

For a while, Pressi said nothing else. “Been a while that we’ve been here, huh. I remember when we were the new kids, and this was supposed to be a temporary gig on the way to the next village. And now? People actually expect things from us.”

She watches Bliss play with the Wolpertinger bones. “Poor guys. Probably thought they’d live or die free. To be dragged around in cages because of some cultural expectation.... sorry, I forgot I was here to cheer you up with mockery. Hey, remember when we had to stake out that casino, the one with all the ostriches?”

———

Pressi lets Murphy walk her home, and gives him a loving kiss on the cheek.

“I’m sorry. I think I just need more time, maybe. I just never saw myself as a gal with a family, and I just have all these issues to work through. I really do love you, and if I ever did marry, it would... sorry, I don’t really know even what I feel sometimes. I... do thank you for your patience. I am really sorry.”

"Pressi, take time. There is much to think through. You are dear to me." He gives her a warm kiss on the cheek, embraces her for a moment, then says goodnight, not turning around lest she see a tear running down his cheek.

Return of the Wolpertingers
In the morning after the wedding, and after seeking Eberyon's wisdom, Murphy goes over to the wolpertingers. "Sorry, lady. I'll call you Rosie. Sorry, young gent. How does Leonard sound for a name? I've been thinking about keeping an eye on you for a bit, then getting you back home. I have a feeling, though, I'm not going to have time to watch over you. Been having these dreams. So, here's the deal. I'm going to let the Culverwood watch over you. One day, I'll be back. To help you all, or your cousins. Sorry for the other two gents." He tosses a few small veggies in their cages to munch on. "I'll be back soon. Then you're going back home."

To cut down on the typical wall of text: Murphy has the means to take two fellow adventurers with him, and the pair of wolpertingers in their travel cages, to the Culverwood. He can be there with the aforementioned within two rounds, free them both within a minute. He communes for ten minutes with the Culverwood, thanks the Power, and renews his promise to, in time, help wolpertingers. He quickly gathers a bit more flora over a few minutes, then he and his friends step into a tree, and back through a tree near the Sanctuary west of Humble's Ford. He does this, with gratitude for those who helped. Whoever wanted to join him - mention it in your next post. If no one does, he handles it alone.
[Perception: 31; Survival: 34]

He visits Pirnook's store to pick up a few supplies. He comes back, fixes up his room, and walks through the compound, taking in all the work that was done. He's happy to spend time with any who wish to, answer what questions he may.

Murphy invites who will to soak in the pool at the top of the rock building after dinner. About 9pm, he says good night to all, and falls asleep by 9:30. He arises at 6:00 am, prays, breakfasts.

"Things have been quiet since the Sarr business. But I've been having dreams. Anyone know anything that's going on out there in the wider Wold?"

At the wedding, Hobie happily played his lute along with whatever other musicians were there. Always happier to be providing the music than to be one dancing in the crowd. He thanks Murphy for the beautiful delicious brew he provided, and his lute playing surely got sloppier as the night went on, but I think the partiers hardly noticed.

------------------------------------

The day after the wedding Hobie finds himself waking on the sofa at Roscoe's house, with an empty bottle in one hand and Prowler in the other.

"Oh, I guess I forgot I had a bed at the Humble House."

As Roscoe is still passed out in his bed, Hobie helps himself to some of his cousin's eggs and makes a few biscuits from his flour jar. He thinks some bacon would be nice, and for half a second Miss Piggy flashes into his mind but he immediately pushes the image away.

After a quiet breakfast, he opens the door and is shocked by the sunlight, with a splitting headache. As he leaves, he notices that Roscoe's door is completely covered with apples, pinned to the door by arrows.

"Huh, I guess we did some target practice after the wedding. Hope I didn't hurt anybody, because I remember nothing."

He goes and finds his friends that day.

"So, uh, who remembers anything from after the wedding?"

It is time for the two newbies to get to know one another, though you WERE more useful when the party was in danger." Jack would accept Talia's hand and do his best to dance (21 preform dance) and also have some small talk since he wished to know more about her strange backstory. It seemed to Jack that Talia didn't know much about her past, or at least that is the impression he got.

Whenever going back to talk to Kezzem , He would answer him, "Good sir, you are far from old, why don't you go out and have some fun? You might find yourself younger than you think!"

The next morning, Zaragosa would love to help Murphey as long as it wasn't against the law. Not that Zaragosa had a love of the law, it was more he wanted to fit into the group without causing too much trouble

Being pretty much sober doing the wedding, he would be able to answer Hobbie pretty much everything.

Preform dance = 21

"Hobbie - you should inaugurate the arrow range, with Kezzem," Murphy suggests. "There's a net set up to protect our oak from wild arrows. He promises to eat any shafts that get through the netting. Say, you want to try to start working with blunted arrows, figure out whether the flight characteristics vary from those with metal arrowheads?" [If you get yourself over to the Rules segment of Woldian Games - you can petition to allow your character to use them. I think you could build a good case - and it would really give you some nice extra options for your main attack mode.]

"We can also set up some targets on the practice arena for throwing daggers, axes, etc. Succotash - you can hurl your axes. Jack - you can toss daggers. Talia, Bliss - you two and I can practice with our sling staffs. Say, I'm thinking about casting ironwood on my slingstaff sometime in the near future. If either or both of you would like the same, let me know. [It would turn your normal slingstaff into a still-wooden yet steel-like +1 slingstaff (might take a while before he can get to it, depending upon what is coming up next)]

"Pressi - you use the spiked chain - a nice reach weapon. You don't really throw things very much, like daggers or the like, right? We can try shooting our sling bullets or arrows or tossing daggers and axes as we try to keep from getting tripped up by your chain. We should work out some routines out in the new practice places."

Succotash considers hitting the ale a little hard after Talia’s rejection, but decides to leave the party early, he heads to The Sanctuary, and heads to his room in the Humble House. He turns in early feeling depressed, not understanding why he seems to be invisible to Talia, when she seems to occupy his mind at all times. He wakes up the next morning in an uncharacteristic bad mood, and heads over to Pantheon’s shrine to pray.

When Murphy asks if he would like to join him in the freeing of the wolpertingers, he goes along more out of a feeling of obligation at keeping his friends safe then anything else, and remains uncharacteristicly quiet the whole trip.

Murphy thanks Jack and Succotash for joining him in the return of the wolpertingers.

He knows that the noble paladin is attracted to the sorceress. The only thing he says to Succotash, at some moment when others are out of earshot, is, "Kind of hard to figure out, sometimes, buddy, no?" He lets him talk if he wants, but does not press.

He spends about two and a half hours all told, scattered over the afternoon, and some in the evening while dangling his legs in the pool, working on the following project. Carved out of oak, Murphy fashions medallions. Each one has the words:
I travel through tree trunks
on one side, and a carving of an oak on the other side. There is a small hole through the top, through which a loop of leather runs, and a larger loop through that to make a necklace. Six of the nine attempts he discards. He manages to make three that are decent artistically (Profession Artist: 23, 28, 24).

In the morning, he gives out the medallions.

"Guys, we are the start of the Fellowship of the Trunk." He gives one medallion to Jack T.T., the second to Succotash, and places the remaining around his own neck. If any asks, he tells them that he were able to travel together from just outside the Sanctuary (Humble House) to the place they found the deer-bunny-birds about 140 or so miles away in the Culverwood. "It's called transport via plants. Maybe you can try it with me some time, and then I'll make you a medallion."

Bliss goes with Murphy so that he does not die alone again. He can die with Bliss! LOL! Bliss will return and say he died happy! With Bliss!

Bliss gets up early the next day and gets his crew to help with the cleanup. It's a good way to get a free leftover breakfast!
