DM Shawn - The Burial
Thursday June 29th, 2017 6:48:43 PM

Beagle answers Pressi.. " Ma'am.. hes just raving non sense at the moment. Its best you see for yourself. Hes coming in for the inns."

With little knowledge, Bliss just knows many farms lay between here and Angel Springs.

---------

The group heads over to their favorite inn( whichever one they feel they patron more.) The farmer is obvious as his wagon is overflowing with household items and members of his family.

He is at the rear of the wagon handing some silver to another halfling and talking to a group of around 20 passerbys.

.... " thing you've ever seen. Halflings come out at night.. banging on my walls and doors. Reek of death and the cemetery if you ask me. I'm done. Dont need the darm life anymore. City life wity a guard and a defending group is more my choice now. "

"Greetings, farmer, welcome to our town. We have heard you have quite a story to tell, and we appear to have walked in on the tail end of it. I don't suppose you'd be so kind as to retell it just one time for us, would you," Shel asks ever so sweetly, still munching on a fresh turnip from the home.

Bliss and Mookie land next to the fellow and turn on the charm. "Yeah, Miss Shelly has the right of it. We're the defending group you are looking for! But maybe we should go see what the problem is in your neck of the woods so we can defend your friends and neighbors too."

"So your saw a bunch of undead halflings walking around and decided 'Know where I would feel safe? Ground zero.' Don't suppose you know why they were coming after you or where they were coming from?

"Also, you will notice that my response to a bunch of stenchy halflings had nothing to do with any of my teammates. This fact worries me. I should have myself checked out."

It is a lesser known secret about Pressi that having to save orphans from undead made her a tad punchy.

She turned towards the family members. "What about you? What did you guys see?"

Mookie hears talk of the undead and goes quiet.

Sensing some raw emotion through their shared empathic bond, Bliss looks at his raven friend and asks, "What's wrong, Mookie old pal?"

The talking bird mutters, "I dunno, Kid. I just got a bad feeling about this, is all."

Murphy Leafwin Pipewood (Kim) AC 20 HP 76/76 CMD 17  d20+13=14 ;
Friday June 30th, 2017 7:42:17 PM

Just before leaving the burrow, Murphy chats briefly with Hazel, telling him of a notion to take the hell hounds north of the river to dispose of their bodies. "I don't want to leave them here by our burrow. I want them destroyed." He also asks whether Alouryn might help the group with a healing surge when they get back from meeting the farmer. "It was a rough night."

In town by the Dancing Pig, while listening, Murphy gets to thinking that the hand of Uthvas may be behind this, but does not mention it initially as it comes to mind. It does not sound beyond the abilities of that contemptible corrupter of flesh. On the other hand, their predecessors as local adventurers - sister Selithe, brother Kendry, now sister-in-law Airin, cousin Dwight, friend Podo - who traveled both with the Crescent Valley adventurers and with Humble's Sword - they and others - had met a different necromancer in the Red Hills. Or was it a different necromancer? He, too, had a humonculous as a familiar. Huh.

Maybe there will be opportunity to explore that connection down the road.

Murphy pulls out paper and pen, and begins taking notes. He introduces the members of Humble's Sword to the farmer, then says, "We may look into it, if my friends agree. Tell us precisely where your home is - and who are you?" He makes certain that he gets the full name of the farmer, and the names of his family members. He also asks if there are any others who dwell nearby where his farm lies. "Tell us exactly when this started, and anything you can think of that lead up to it. Also, can your family members here add anything to what you have to say? Did they see or hear anything which may help us understand what is going on?" He does adopt his style of questioning to the way in which the farmer talks, aiming both to make him comfortable to discuss these things, as well as to encourage him to give good information. Unfortunately, his own diplomatic skill this morning do not rise to quite the heights of his friends (Diplomacy 16, taking into account the combined efforts of his companions), but he manages to avoid any terrible faux pas.

Based on the farmer's answers, he begins to sketch a map, trying to get a feel for where the dead walkers come from relative to his farm.

Also, to repeat an earlier question: What time is it? If Beagle showed up past the time Murphy usually spends in morning prayers (starting about 7am), then Murphy was already up when the door knocking began (despite the late night). I get the sense the day is farther along than that, but want to be certain.

The farmer turns to Shel. " There aint much to share. I saw halflings that shambled like they were dead and smelled like rot and a cemetary"

To Bliss " That would be great.. but don't count me in. I aint headed back there. Im done. "

" What happened?" He asks Lance. " We ran. We ran here."

Kezzem finds no lingering auras on the farmer.

" Ground Zero?" He asks Pressi. " Whatcha mean? And dont talk to them... talk to me."

Sky just takes in the scene.

Mookie lets Bliss know he has a bad feeling.

Before leaving Murphy spoke to Hazel, and Hazel agreed on the course.

The farmer takes a deep breatg.. " I'm sorry ya know? Im just scared. These things are killing my live stock. Had one last night try to break down my door. Its not worth it.. not for my family. Our farm is on the road to Angel Springs.. i can draw you a map ya know. This only happens at night, ya know."

Its around 8am.

"No matter. I'm sure that your family members would only corroborate your account fully, and indicate that you withheld nothing from us. Right?" (Sense motive 11, Diplomacy 27. Pressi's suspicions will go unanswered but at least she is able to smooth over some ruffled feathers despite some shade.)

WIth that, she moved on. "Yeah, I don't really have much to add. Don't really think anyone doubts we'll find undead, and who are you going to... whaddiyacallit. Contact? Message."

DM Shawn - The Farm

"Ok. I'll draw it. " he says to Shel as he takes the paper from Murphy. " Names Green. I guess Farmer green works. " He draws a dot, and writes Angel Springs.. draws a line and another dot that says Humble's Ford... he then marks a notch on the line and says House. That is the extent of his map. "Listen... right across from the farm is a gigantic oak tree. You'll know it when you see it."

"No one really lives by us... its a hours travel by wagon. Stared a few night ago." Turning back to Shel.. " Yeah... only happens at night, ya know. "

Nodding to Sky. " yeah, my family is bless that thing didn't get the door down."

"The way they stomp around, I am sure there are some prints" he adds to Alleah.

Lance is ready... knowing a day trip is better then not.

Murphy thinks a supply of holy water is key.

Kezzem prepares his spells for the day. A far different cry from getting his thieves tools ready.

Pressi is taken back by his rough snap at her. " Sorry.. ma'am... just a little scared is all. My family will back up my story ya know... but there is no need to talk to them ya know."

If done, the farmer starts unpacking his belongings and heads into the inn. One of local workers, who was paid to take his wagon, takes it to a warehouse to store until he can find a better locale for it. "

Murpy heads to the store to pick up some supplies, everyone has some time to get ready before heading out.

Once on the road, the trip is quiet. A little oddly quiet. No bugs, not birds... everything is silence. The trip is uneventful, but there is always an eerie calm. Due to the gathering of supplies the trip is pushed back and the group arrives with around 2 hours of daylight to spare.

The obvious oak tree is indeed obvious, and the group can see the farm directly across the road. The buiding looks to be a normal farm.. the door and all the windows are shut. Obviously no movement or sound comes from the area.

In Humble's Ford
"As you are leaving your farm behind, have you any interest in selling it, and your dwelling there?" Murphy inquires. "I ask, as someone may have an interest once the present problem is dealt with, and the proceeds may help you get nicely established elsewhere." Whatever Green replies, the druid thanks him for letting them know, and wishes him and his family well in finding a new locale. "Drop in to the WinWood Music and Toy Shop in Angel Springs. My family owns it. We will get word to them of what happens at your farm, and you can let us know where to look you up, if you'd like." He tears off some of the paper from the unused portion of the map paper, jots a note with the name of the shop, asking for a 10% discount for the bearer, signs his name, and hands over a pouch with 25gp in it. "You can use this to buy some toys for the children, maybe something nice for your wife. If you don't yet have a spot to stay, Leska Rose, my sister, may be able to point you in the right direction."

Murphy then stopped in to Pirnook's General Store - the locus for access to the Catacombs in Humble's Ford. While there, he sought to acquire three wands:[blockquote]- Hide From Undead, which he offered to Bliss or Alleah or Kezzem, or whoever was capable of using it to help the party;
- Mage Armor, which he offers to Shel or Bliss;
- Shield to Alleah or Bliss - each wand for the recipient to use, and keep, to help out themselves and fellow party members.[blockquote][I will remove them from Murphy's CS once we know who takes them. If someone else has UMD, or the ability to use one of the wands, speak now.]

He also buys a dozen, and he gives two vials Holy Water to each member of the party. He already had 9 vials earlier acquired, of which he retains 7. If anyone wants an extra one or two, they can ask Murphy. "If you get the contents on an undead creature, it will harm it" [for 2d4 hp damage, no save].

Before leaving Humble's Ford, Murphy tells Sky, "No one will ever replace Meko. However, I know you are used to riding. We have a riding dog, named Cudgel. He has a saddle, and saddle bags. If you would like, you can bring him along with you. He's a good dog, and traveled with us before. I can bring Skipper, my riding dog. They get on well." He brings a bit of extra equipment for Skipper to carry (mainly alchemical items).

He asks Hazel to take the dead infernal red dogs north of town, a ways above the river, and find a spot to leave them for the beasts of the field and birds of the air. "Make sure you take a few friends along to help, Hazel."

Was 4th-level cleric of Flower, Alouryn, wife of ranger Hazel, and original of Humble's Sword, who lives with us at the burrow, willing to benefit the still somewhat wounded members of the party with a surge of positive energy before we left for the farm? [2nd request - that would bring everyone to full hit points][i]

Along the Way
Thinking about the Green children, he talks with his friends about what they think are good ways to raise the little 'uns. He also considers the orphans, bereft of father and mother. And in that regard, he says, "I'm working in my head on designing a water sprinkler system for the orphanage."

At Green's Farm
"Fine, indeed," Murphy winks at his good friend Shel. Lance somewhat startles the druid as the monk voices objection in his own way to the local silence. "Good, subtle approach, Lance. I will await the stampede," he says with a smile. He notes Kezzem's new approach to life, and source of help. He then joins Sky in looking over the local tracks while the light in the sky is still good. He should have a fair idea whether they will be seeing one or two of the Wold's moons this evening, should the skies be relatively free of clouds.

What is the weather like? Last night was the sudden heavy rain. Has that fully cleared?

Lance hops up on the tree and screams at the top of his lungs. For a tense moment, no one moves. Luckily nothing comes shambling out of the woods.

Kezzem casts detect evil. From his vantage point right now no auras are obvious.

Sky is the first too move towards the house. By the road no prints are found but closer to the house he does spot some. In front of the door there is a good ammount stomped around.. also a path leading from the woods to to the house and back. The prints appear as if halfling size.. bur on one of rhe feet the person is walking on the side of his foot.

Farmer green shakes his head negatively. " Nope not selling.. ya know. And as much as I appreciate your gold and discount, I decline.:

He gathers his supplies... ( send us the catacombs email) and gives Hazel a job. His wife is not currently there.

The weather has cleared up, though it is a bit dreery out. Its still daylight but the sun is blocked by clouds.

He continues, "Also, I can map out where I may invoke spike stones, which will damage them as they walk through an area - though I may wait until they show up and actually begin to approach. I will show all of you ahead of time where I plan to place them, so that you can have clear pathways to be able to go through without stepping on them, but they will be hard to avoid unless you know where." He walks the grounds, figuring out likely places. He also tells others he may use the Entangle spell to wrap up some opponents.

"All right, undead. There are zombies, and skeletons, and ghosts, wraiths, shadows, spectres, vampires, wights, ghouls - anything else? Now, we may need to cast a consecrate spell over this farm house - but I do not have that spell memorized. It may take us more than one night to figure out how to deal with these nasty critters. If so, on the morrow I can pray for that spell. Also, there may be a necromancer behind this - and a graveyard, perhaps a crypt. Let's look about before the light fades."

He asks regarding the wands, talking with the spellcasters or those with the use magic device skill specifically, "Bliss, Alleah, Shel, Kezzem: Which of you will take the Hide from Undead wand?
Which will take the Mage Armor wand?
Who will take the Shield wand?

"I can tell all of you the command words for the wands. Please, if you take a wand, use it tonight for the benefit of the party. Don't forget you have it. All right? Now, who takes what to use?" OOC: Sorry the post is half an hour early. I'll be busy the rest of the day

Shel is disgusted at what they did to the chickens. She agrees with Alleah and thinks the house is a good place to prepare before the undead arrive.

Bliss circles over the farm, trying to get a birds eye view. He can see the road and in the distance the village of Angel Springs. The woods around the house however are to thick to see through. Once landing, he is sickened at the sight Shel found.

Murphy spends a better part of the hour and half of light setting up traps. Before the dark comes, he lays out possibe parts of his plan. He also lets everyone know if they wait a day he will be able to Pray for a consecrate spell.

Alleah heads in and starts looking around. On the bottom floor there are two rooms, a kitchen which has a door access and a living room. The kitchen has one window, as does the living room. The upstairs rooms do not have windows. There are no walls between, but a set of steps go up to two bedrooms. One has a master bed while the other room has a trio of bunk beds. Bliss denies the wand, and informs Murphy he will be sniping from the sky.

Kezzem also denies the wand, as the new and improved Kezzem will not want to hide away from the fight.

Murphy uses up his time, and barricading the house will use up the time for everyone else, but is there anything in preparation needed, now would be the time.

Pressi offers to take one of the rejected wands, and give it a shot. (UMD + 7, there's about a 1/3 chance of success.) She also takes the proferred holy water and places them in her bandolier with some shiruken, a thunderstone, a tanglefoot bag and two healing potions.

If she is allowed to help with traps (no craft or survival skills - I probably should sink a couple into craft trap), she basically places an alchemists fire and two sunrods into various bodies of chickens and leaves them by the front door. Otherwise, they go into the bandolier.

She also asks the farmer if any traps can be activated/reactivated. (If so, she can use disable 15).

She also takes some time to look around, making various religion checks to determine if she can determine what attacked the chickens or made the tracks (Religion 14 or take 10 for 15), and to answer Murphy's question. She also takes some steps to help barricading the doors.

As a last preparation, she moves into a sneak position, after failing to climb on top of the cabinets. (sneak 33, climb natural 1).

Shel tries to help the others with their preparations, but she had no real skill at such matters. Basically, she could carry small pieces of wood and the like to whomever needed it.

Murphy nods at Kezzem as he explains his reluctance. "Sure, I understand. Having someone in the house who does not have hide from undead can help serve as, um, I hope you don't take this the wrong way - bait. But, Kezz - get mage armor from the wand or from Shel once we know the undead are drawing near. It makes it harder for some of 'em to hit you.

As the sun sets and early evening begins, Murphy suggests that he, changed into a great horned owl, can conduct overflights, as might Mookie and Bliss. "I can aim a bit to the left, and you a bit to the right, then we can crisscross, angle around, then come back." He also says that we don't know when the undead will decide to come out. Maybe shortly after sunset. Maybe after dusk, as the sky grows dark. Perhaps at midnight. He shrugs his shoulders. "We'll just have to wait and see - and prepare as much as we might, in the interim."

As Lance is so quick of foot, he ensures that he - and Pressi - in particular know where the spike stones are likely to be laid. He may, too, besides entangle, try to use spike growth. It may be in lieu of the spike stones, or elsewhere, in addition.

Before he transforms, he casts longstrider on himself (yes, it only works when he is using legs to move, but lasts 9 hours, so, he casts it), asks Shel to cast Mage Armor on him with the wand. Then he asks for Pressi or Alleah to use the appropriate wand to cast Hide from Undead... but not before he suggests to Mookie and Bliss that they do likewise before flying out again. After he receives Hide from Undead, he flies out, toward the woods, above and among the trees, seeing what he may see, hearing what he may hear.

Pressi takes the items offered to her, the wand and holy water. She helps were she can. She might not know how to set a trap, but she does know how to follow directions. The foor prints look halfling to her and dont help discern the type of undead. She hides about in the kitchen, climbing on the cabinet.

Shel also helps about, getting people what they need for traps. She stays out of everyone's way and is a reliable helper setting the traps.

Mjrphy goes about informing his friends of where he will lay out the defensive spells. He casts his appropriate spells before baving the protections from the wands cast on him. He finally turns into an owl and begins flying around the farm. He is unable to see through the canopy of tree tops. Is Murphy entering the woods or just flying above them?

Lance sits in front of the steps.. waiting for anything.

Alleah boards up the windows, doors.. reinforces the walls and even braces the table against the door. Readying the house for a warzone.

Pressi is a bit annoyed at the casting but gives anyone that needs it a bop from the wand.

Kezzem explains how he doesnt need the mage armor and instead is ready for the fight.. offering himself as bait.

Bliss and mookie keep scouting from above, wondering when they can take a vacation.

The second the sun dips below the horizon an unearthly cackle that sounds like some sort of bird crying out.

Murphy's one alarm trap goes off as a skeletal chicken comes marching out of the woods. It stops 10' from the edge... " echhhhh.... ehhh....a....dooooooo" it bellows.. to the moon.

It begins to dawn on Pressi, as she hears Lance screaming, that a couple of teammates are outside the boarded up house and completely isolated from the rest of the team unable to be reached by backup.

Murphy is one thing. His "use magic" to scout ahead has gotten him in so much trouble that she just decided to stop worrying about it. It's his thing and he's never going to change so she just needed to learn to live with it. At any rate, at least Murphy has the sense to avoid engaging the enemy and to attempt fleeing at the first sign of trouble. Someday, that instinct might actually save him.

But Lance? She had lost track of him and assumed he was in a different part of the house. Was he really so stupid as to engage who knows what (and if a solitary creature, its probably just a scout) by himself with nowhere to fall back to? Whatever. Let HIS girlfriend worry about him.

She tries to catch a glimpse of the chicken with the hope of identifying it (Perception Natural 20, Religion 8). Her religion knowledge is so bad that she draws instead on the Zombie Chicken of Moana, and decides they can defeat it with a coconut.

The best she can do is move towards a window (leaving her hiding spot) and look for a hole she can use to throw shiruken.

Murphy enters the woods on wing, lowering below the tree line. Once in the woods the whole night is even darker. He quickly sees a few more shapes about to exit the treeline as well as some shapes further in.

Lance charges in and gives a flying kick smashing the skeletal chicken.

Kezzem double times it to Lance's side. Intent on some mellee he is dismayed to see the bones and remenants of the dead chicken.

Pressi expected this from Murphy, but Kezzem and Lance is another story. She leaves her hiding spot and heads to one of the windows ready to aid with some shuriken.

Alleah also moves to a window and cracks a joke about the chicken being evil.

Bliss was about to fire into the mellee.. if it could be called that but the chicken is dead.

The farm is quiet again for a brief second... then... " mmmmmmeeeeeooooooeeeewwwwwww.... mmmmmmeeeeeeoooooooowewwwwwww"

Two full size cats, one with its organs dragging behind and the other with a hole in ita side come marching out of the woods. Behind them another skeletal chicken...

Murphy moves deeper into the woods, banking around the trees. (Need fly checks, Dc 15). He spots halflings moving closer but still a distance away. No sight of a necromancer.

Alleah is also a little upset at the split and decides to let Waard decide her next movement. Shes a little taken back as it lands on its side and stays. For a split second she thinks she hears Shels thoughts about splitting up, but when Shel turns, Alleah sees her mouth moving.

Personal message from Jerry about why this is important and why Woldians should give back to this site by doing what they can.

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

As a great horned owl Murphy normally flies 65'/round. If he hustles, 130', or 'runs', 260'. As we have no map nor indication of distances, I guessed it would take a minute (10 rounds) to get from the house to the woods (July 5th post). If less than that, I'll need to adjust spell times remaining. Say he was moving at mid-speed from the house initially (hustle, 130'), let me know how long it took to reach the woods. After that, dealing with irregularly placed trees, figure movement of 65'/round (60' plus fleet feat).

(Ooc comments deleted by co-DM SteveK. Please ask in character or take it to email. And unless for flavor purposes, it doesn't matter if the trees are coniferous or deciduous)

As a standard action, Murphy casts owl's wisdom, and flies on, listening, and seeing what there is to see.

Shel lays out an idea for a plan to bottleneck the undead as they come in the door. It does seem like a good plan, but most of the party is outside and Murphy is nowhere to be seen.

After swuashing two cats, Lance heads halfway back.to the house in his decayed flesh and icor covered boots.

Murphy heads deeper into the woods, still not seeing the source. The woods are entirely too quiet. He casts owls wisom on himself.

Alleah agrees on defensive plams for the house.. and for yet the third time in a row she is failed and her spell doesnt work.

Sky agrees with the plan, setting two arrows and readying two more incase.

Pressi begins lecturing Alleah on magic neutrality but ends up drifting off.

Bliss is shocked Murphy moved off by himself. Murphy is too far to hear and Bliss cant see him as Murphy is flying in the woods.

Having flown so far in for (x?) number of rounds without coming across a proximate source of the creation of undead, in his owl form Murphy advances another twenty feet or so, then banks 45° left flying at least another twenty feet, planning on returning soon to his friends, whether or not he spies anything of substance. During his flight the druid has been noting the general sorts of trees, trying to get a feel for the place, whether the stand of trees be ancient or young, and some of the species, and whether evergreen, deciduous, or a mixture. As the sun set only moments ago, and there is some cloud cover, but most times in his experience in the Wold darkness does not set in fully coincident with the sun setting over the horizon, but more gradually. Does that not seem to be the case here? Might there be something distinct about these woods - in addition to overhead foliage - which accelerates the darkening?

If anybody, or thing, appears to take action against this wandering owl, Murphy is prepared to take evasive action, in particular using intervening tree trunks and foliage, perhaps beginning to gain altitude (reserved 25' of movement for such, if deemed necessary, but losing 5' of that movement by exceeding 45° - no more that 90° total for the round). He plans next round to fully head back toward the house at a swift speed, barring anything which may cause him to change his mind.

When he arrives, he lands, looks at the bits of flesh scattered about, and his friends' condition. He finds a bit of dirt, and writes with a claw on the ground:

"Seriously, I am thinking maybe we have some chance of handling the cave now, unless you think monsters will hit the farm while we are gone. These things seem so far to be pushovers, and I would like to get a look into that cave."

Murphy, Bliss, Lance and Kezzem are covered in gore and ichor. Bliss spits out some of the gore that landed in his mouth while Mookie laments on it having to be undead.

Shel comes up with a theory that the farmer was setting them up to leave, and possibly being up to something devious.

Murphy flies back to the group and relays the message on the ground. (Need fly checks). He scrapes the note on the ground with his talon.

Alleah is obviously frustrated, and say she is headed back to the farmhouse to relax and get her spells back.

Kezzem cleans the gore off as well, asking if anyone needs any healing.

Pressi insists she is not one to agree with Shel, but thinks there might be something to go with the lying farmer possibility. She is also for exploring the cave and seeing where the white shirt zombies came from.

Sky is torn, thinking it best to attack in the sunlight and being aided but also thinks they might have to do it at night since that is when the attacks happen. Not being able to see plays a part in dampening his wanting to go to the cave now.

So the party is together, but as far apart as usual. Murphy and Shel are for going to the cave while Alleah and Sky are for resting. The others are undecided at the moment. As if more was needed, a light mist starts up and begins soaking the woods, the farm and the house.

Unslimed Murphy changes from a great horned owl back into halfling form. "Alleah, Sky, everyone, please, let us not get discouraged, or waste time. I have cast certain spells which can aid along the way." He pulls out a pair of sunrods from his haversack, and an everlasting torch. "We have light. Let's just get going. Feel free to agree or disagree or plot or plan along the way, but I can take you there. I would have gone into the cave to see what was there, but figured one or more of you might have ended up yelling at me for doing so. Well, yell at me now, if you wish, but I'm heading back, and think we all should do so. Be of good heart. There may be someone who needs a rescue, or a bad guy who needs taking down."

He offers a brisk shower or two of water (create water, 18 gallons each time, over an area roughly 10'x10') - "Hey, it's raining, anyhow!" to those who have bits of ichor splattered on them (Mookie, Bliss, Lance and Kezzem, I think) to help get off most of the big chunks, and a fair amount of the smaller bits.

He takes the sunrod, strikes it on the ground, makes friendly with Cudgel, who has traveled with them for many weeks before, and hands the now glowing rod to Sky. "If you want, you can tuck it so it is held by a couple of straps on the saddle bags, there. Now you can see, friend." He offers another sunrod to whom wishes it, and carries the everlasting torch himself for the moment. He holds his hand out to Pressi. "If you're ready, we can go now." If she takes his hand, he begins walking briskly (hustle, cover 50 feet/round) with her along the path he first overflew. If not, he says, "I'll start out, and wait briefly inside the woods for you and all. But I'm going to the cave, in case someone needs our help, or our hurt."

Just outside the woods, he casts know direction, getting a fix on true north, and lining up some trees ahead to help keep his reckoning. As they move along, he keeps on updating his reference points, occasionally recasting the spell to ensure they are on a proper heading back toward the cave.

Alleah let's loose.

"Murphy, just stop. Stop. I know you're for going off half-cocked... as usual. But will you just listen to reason for once. Just once." The source of Alleah's frustration becomes clear "If your aunt were here, Murphy, would you leave her side as you repeatedly do us? I'm continually amazed that you won't show us the same respect. And for once, ONCE, will you listen to a plan other than your own!"

Alleah takes a breath. She is getting well and truly fed-up with Murphy's selfishness and unwillingness to work as part of a team. Right now it feels like "The Humble's Sword... and Murphy"

"Now, we promised the farmer we would come here and take care of his farm? Didn't we? We can't abandon it now. There is no telling if it will be further attacked, and from what direction. Further, he had all his possessions with him. There are none in the house. I have checked. He wouldn't go to so much effort to deceive us, and we have encountered undead. So he's telling the truth. Did anyone sense he was lying when we spoke with ihm?

Isn't there something in the WLA or Paladins code about acting with honor, keeping your word and so on? If we promised we would protect his house, then on our honor we must do so.

Now, he wouldn't run off from an undead cat or chicken. There is obviously something bigger here. Why run in to it in the middle of the night? Whatever is in the cave isn't going to run away. Even if it does, then job done!

So, we said we would do something, there is likely something bigger ahead, and we have the edge during the daylight. Why in the Wold should we go now save to serve your wanderlust?

If you truly want to keep a watch on it, I'll cast a Clairvoyance spell and we can monitor it from the house.

I feel very strongly about this. We should stay the night in the house"

Rant finished, Alleah makes her way to the house to pout. She's bent to Murphy's will time and time again. It's time he paid her the same respect.

Bliss has a funny feeling about this. He gathers what he can of the remains and gives them a decent burial. He tries to recall if he had ever met these guys before. How long were they undead?

OOC: It is gross to even think of, but did these guys, when they exploded, have a corrupt and rotted smell and (::shudder::) taste, or were they ... fresh?

"Were these guys definitely undead?" he asks.

In response to Bliss' question, Pressi takes a step outside and another look at the undead as carefully as she can (Perception 17, Religion 10) but isn't sure she is equipped to determine time of death. "Looked pretty undead to me," she replied.

As Murphy and Alleah began to argue in the house, Pressi continued to stand in the drizzling rain. For a time she remains frozen, unsure of where to go. To hesitate for even a second against one of Murphy's plans signals how seriously she takes Alleah's words.

"I guess I don't actually believe that he was lying, but... something is definitely off here. Why do undead keep coming back here - or from here as the case may be? Why did we only get a couple of undead when the farmer implied we'd encounter a horde? How does any necromancer spend so much time in our land's foyer with the entire valley on high alert for necromancers and not get caught?

She catches her breath, staring at the chicken. "The farmer said he was targeting their livestock, and increasing its attacks. Only tried to knock down the door the last time... So Humbles Ford is this way, Angel Springs is that way, and... Murphy, where is the cave again? So if they were moving past the house...."

Pressi turns her perception towards the rain itself, trying to remember anything about undead and mist (Religion 10, Perception 25+2 for traps). Probably just getting paranoid, she told herself.

If she doesn't get anything off of the mist, she shakes it off, reminding Alleah that they can protect this house by securing the area around it. It becomes rather clear that she's gone towards Murphy's side, producing a tie.

Bliss notices that Shel and Alleah want to stay the night to protect the farm. Murphy, Pressi, and maybe Kezzem -- sorry! SIR Kezzem -- seem to want to go out into the woods to track undead or explore a cave.

Sky is on the fence, and Lance ... wait, where's Lance? He was grappling a zombie. Did he get blowed up? Bliss starts running around calling for his friend. "Lance! LANCE! Where are you!?"

Perception 33, plus darkvision.

DM Shawn - The Farm

Murphy begins by conjuring water and offering anyone a shower to clean the gore off. He also hands out some sun stones, and offering up a plan of attack on the cave. He tells Alleah to yell at him, since she would have if he entered the cave by himself. Finally before heading into the woods, he casts know direction.

And then it happens.... Alleah lets all the pent up frustration out on one target.. Murphy. She chastises him for always heading off, and leaving them. Chastises him for making it Humble's Sword and Murphy, She tells him he never listens to anyone elses plans and only does his. She offeres to cast claravoyance to keep and eye on the cave, before heading back up to the house.

Shel agrees with Alleah, and says they should examine the cave in the morning.

Bliss gives a proper burial to what remains of the undead. He didn't know either of them, and from their smell and .... taste. They were on the fresher side of undead.

Pressi checks the remains and lets Bliss know they were truly undead. She stands in the rain, letting the argument go on in front of her. She tries to recall anything about rain and the undead, but nothing is jogged. Finally she shares her piece and by the end it is obvious she is on Murphy's side, setting up a tie.

Kezzem heals himself before trying to figure out where the undead came from, and if their auras were traceable. Whatever auras were left have transpired with their return to death.

Bliss is unsure of which side to jump to, and instead checks on Lance. The usual joking Lothario is quiet. Perhaps the gore and ichor got to him.

So the debate is 2-2 with Kezzem, Bliss, Lance and Sky needed to drop votes. Though the group seems like it will be discussing this some more

I mean, I don't think we need to stay here or fear going to this cave at night, and I don't agree that it will necessarily be safer in the morning. But it doesn't appear that we need to rush out to the cave right this instant. And its possible that our undead are on the move given what we've heard so far.

Murphy listens to Alleah, Shel, Bliss, Pressi, Sky. Lance does not speak up.
"So, you are displeased with me, Alleah? And I do not listen to reason? When your reason is reasonable, I'm happy to listen. If my Aunt Nilli were here, or Marigold, they would do just fine if I left their side from time to time. Some of my other aunts, perhaps not so much.

"I scout ahead. It's what I do. I gather information, bring it back to you, and we can together then have a better idea of what is ahead, and begin to figure out what to do about it. If my scouting makes you mad, and seems only a self-absorbed wanderlust, Alleah, then perhaps you will be mad at me on a regular basis. Or, you can see what benefits accrue, and appreciate it for how it helps us figure out what next to do. I don't scout in order to make you mad - your reaction is your choice.

"Explain to me again how going to the source of the undead is failure to keep what you say is our promise to the farmer. The only explicit promise I heard from anyone is that we would see what we could do, and Kezzem said we will return the undead to their graves. Thanks for burying what remains of their bodies, Kez.

"Those of you splattered by the remains: Might you catch a disease, or a curse, by being covered by their open flesh and blood? If so, ought we not deal with any remaining undead quickly, that we can return earlier for clerical help for you?

"A good general, my Uncle Orby told me once, does not give the enemy a chance to rest and regroup when instead he can press them, not affording them time to better prepare for their assault. Two undead are destroyed. Why not go to the source, and destroy any more, before they come all the way to the building? I can set up spikes or thorns that will tear up their bodies before they can travel that distance. If Shel needs to use fire against them, then tonight's misty rain will help protect the woods.

"Or, Alleah, is it that you have used up most of your complement of spells, and feel a need to replenish before continuing? Now, THAT might be a good reason to delay as you have suggested, if it be the case.

"Also, consider this: If we remain in the house, there is no guarantee we will rest here undisturbed. In fact, I think, if we remain here, rather than taking the battle to the undead enemy, the chances of the house being damaged are multiplied, not mitigated.

"Finally - what if there are innocents who need rescued? Or a necromancer who, if we fail to attack, will flee to work his woe elsewhere, after seeing that we have destroyed a few of his corrupted victims? That would not quite be 'job done,' 'Leah."

He looks around to see if any are wounded. If any are, he uses the wand of cure light wounds on them: 8, 9, 7, 6, 4, 8, 8, 3, 7 [Say if your character or familiar use any]

"I'm happy talk things over a bit more, if needed. I hope it's not that we afraid of the dark, now."

"You've made many reasonable suggestions in the past, Alleah. I've gone along with many. But not all. However, fine. Rest tonight. I will be on the roof, so as to react quickly if needed. And I will surround most of the farmhouse with spike stones (if the ground is rocky) (Reflex partial DC18 per 5' square) or spike growth (if it is largely surrounded by any sort of ground-covering vegetation) (Reflex partial DC17 per 5' square). Will leave a 5' wide passageway that I'll mark we can walk through safely. Either spell will last 9 hours. I can dispel if needed. You might not want your animals to walk around on their own outside once I cast it.

"Before I do that, though - it took me about 30 to 45 seconds to fly out there initially, and about 15 or 25 seconds or so to fly back. Should we have no one take another quick look before we shut up the house for the evening? Or someone to be near the edge of the wood to give early warning?

"Running off? Last battle, I moved away to gain cover and fight and help kill the enemy. I'm not a toe-to-toe fighter, Alleah - if I'd stayed where I first was, we would have been visiting Lord Gargul again. I cast spells, generally with good effect. Running off? With how easy it is to strike me, if I stand right in front of the enemy, they kill me quickly. If I find range, I take them out. I use what skills and tactics I can to help us defeat the bad guys. Don't accuse me of cowardice.

"I'll say this, too. I doubt this decision to be the wisest course, for the reasons I have given. That said, for everyone's sake, I should be pleased to be proven wrong."

He asks if anyone in particular would want to join him on the roof... "I've got canvas to help keep us somewhat dry, and ropes to help keep us secure, and to slide down if need be."

Murphy looks over different spots on the roof which look like good spots to sit, safely (survival 16, 14). He does not care much for the first two spots. One near the chimney, though, looks ideal (survival 29). He sets up camp there, checking the security of the spot, tying around the chimney, finding another spot or two for anchoring. He ties knots every two feet for the rope which can be tossed down for descents. Oh, initial climb 10... then he takes 10 (taking his time) for climb 17 to ensure he gets safely up. He drops the rope to help anyone who wants to join him.

It's not scouting if you just find other monsters to come fight us while we are already fighting monsters. I don't know what that is, but it isn't scouting. And I think what Alleah's main point is, is it would be nice to be asked what course of action we want to pursue, rather than being told what you re doing and for us to hurry up and tag along. Sky boils it down to two philosophies. do they want to fight the undead in a closed spaced or in an open area.

Alleah, still fed up, dips into his magic again and casts an auguary on her question. The response she gets doesn't help much... weal and woe.

Shel tells everyone needs to chime in,and give their opinion.

Bliss says he is worried about Mookie and that he votes to stay the night.

Pressi isn't in the boat of staying on the farm, but she also doesn't want to put any wedges between the party.

Murphy finally replies, and in a calm tone exlains his train of thought in his decisions. Alleah doesn't like the answer and goes back on the offensive, telling him how his running off hurts the party. not to mention usually ends up in a death.

Murphy again replies and informs Alleah he will hang out at the farm, but compromises to wait on the roof. He'll keep guard up there. He does offer one last time for the group to scout. Somewhere in there, Murphy casts neutralize poison on Mookie and Lance.

Shel brings up the fight at Uthvas's home, and how it wasn't what she would call scouting.

The discussion still goes on... You can continue back and forth, and ok to post dialogue in multiple posts.. (But not actions). If the discussion ends, I need a watch order. Is murphy staying on the roof the entire time?

Pressi could feel the air sucked out of the room. Bliss added further comments about Mookie's injuries. Kezzem finally raised his vote to go to the cave, making it a 3-3 tie (with Sky doing the Talmudic Shuffle and Lance clearly self-immolating from his own hormones. It's cannon now. Can't take it back.)

Well, not exactly a tie as Murphy began to back down, however begrudgingly. But Alleah and Shel were on a roll, re-litigating the fights of the past. Murphy was tired of having everything weigh on his shoulders. Alleah and Shel were tired of being bossed around (she bit off her opinion about that). Bliss felt neglected. Kezzem and Lance were ready for a fight. Sky seemed lost since he lost his last dog. And she....

Pressi tended to struggle for external stability as a wall against her own inner conflict. Maybe that's why she followed so readily or tried so hard to give orders. Maybe that's why she fought so hard against indecision or halflings acting up. Of course, there was no indication as to which course of action was the better - they didn't even know what they were up against or how it would react in either way. No wonder the fight was so strong.

She knew nothing would be resolved overnight.

"I think the decision is over. Alleah's counsel will be listened to, and we will stay the night. That probably means re-barricaded doors and windows, new wire traps and signals. Probably the usual watch list. Murphy, I will of course be joining you on your watch, though I may check downstairs from time to time. I'm still a front line fighter and probably should be near the door when they come. And I may review the house and area again to make sure we didn't miss anything."

Bliss takes first watch. He and Mookie stay inside.

"Friends," he says, "We can't quarrel among ourselves. We have to be heroes! People are relying on us."

He thinks about the groupies the party seems to have attracted. And two of them are dead now. He says to Alleah, "Miss Alleah, we have to think about maybe taking those groupies under wing. Someone has to watch out for them."

Murphy sighs. "We're no more than half an hour or so after the sun has set - not yet a long night, though wrangling may make it seem so. I agree it likely will turn out to be long - we will know by morning. Rest who can while you can, watch who can, pray who so choose."

He just nods his head to Shel, to let her know he was listening.

"Thanks, Sky," Murphy says to his offer to join him up top.

"If I sense creatures are coming against us, like as not I'll change to be like you, Alleah - a wind spirit. I may fly over them, and take other actions as seem appropriate.

"Bliss, you are right. People are relying upon us. We also have a responsibility, whether we asked for it or not, to those who seem to be exalting us. If any have ideas, as we have time, let's discuss that. It is sad that two were turned into weapons for use against us.

"All of you - I hold each of you in high regard. I respect you. Even... even I could say I love you. It is not my purpose or desire to raise any bitterness in your souls against me. Each of us has certain skills which are rare, and well-suited toward accomplishing extraordinary things. I do want to work together, for there to be a fair measure of reciprocity.

"Alleah - though you chose to change your form more or less permanently, without first consulting with the rest of the party, did any of us complain? I think your choice, though surprising, significantly augments aspects of your power as an adventurer. I am not the only one who does things without prior consultation. I do not disrespect your decision, nor is this a complaint. We may be more alike than you think, though. Rest well, wind sister.

"Now, Pressi, Sky and I will get up on the roof. From there I plan to lay out ground defenses.

"We can take turns on watch. I'll serve the first three hours. Sky - you want to take second, and Pressi third from the roof?

"For those remaining inside - go ahead and choose. Bliss has volunteered for first watch. Who's next? Kezzem? Lance? Alleah?"

He remains in the main part of the building for another moment or two, in case anyone else wishes to engage with him. Otherwise, he lets people know he is going outside for a few minutes to place some sunrods, which he lights, having them just far enough apart that any passing before them or between them have a chance of being seen. He shows where a safe walking path will be after he casts his spell. Then he climbs up to the roof, where he intends to remain for the evening, unless circumstances change.

After they settle in, he holds Pressi's hand, and puts his arm around Sky's shoulders. "If you want, you can tell us some of the stories of you and Meko, before you met us, Sky."

[To DM Shawn - Is the ground outside rocky, and/or covered with vegetation? Murphy needs to choose which of two spells to use - either Spike Stones or Spike Growth - to take down walking undead on their way to the farmhouse. He creates a staggered pattern. If we get a map, I'll lay them out.]

"Changing form without consultation? He's got to be joking. I've lost count of the forms he has taken"

"Please explain to me how changing into an air elemental is something the party wish to complain about? Anyone? As I remember it, it got me into a burning orphanage and saved a life. Oh, that's right. You were out front and missed it. I also saved two kids up a tree, but you probably missed that as well from the tree you were hiding behind. And that's just in the past few days. Putting myself in harms way to protect others instead of flying around and watching things unfold" Alleah shakes her head. It's probably just an inferiority complex on his part. Perhaps he feels threatened by her? "Wait, you're going to turn into a wind spirit? Did YOU ask, permission? I must have missed it. But you're right Murphy. Changing forms without permission isn't something someone should do. I'll turn back into a halfling since, you know, it affects everyone. But you go and change into an air spirit now. You have my permission. Although, since changing forms affects the whole party, do you need a vote or anything? Oh, and be sure and come back and ask us if you want to change into something else. I'm sure you wouldn't be a hypocrite at all"
Murphy will continue to live in his delusions and hypocrisy. Maybe once he gets back from Crazyville he'll learn how to play nicely with others.

True to her word, Alleah removes her Surrender Self spell and turns back into a halfling.

"Sorry Bliss. You were saying something about groupies?"

Kezzem helps Bliss bury the remains of the undead. He questions the group on exterminating the source.

Sky leaves Cudgel inside the house and heads up to the roof to watch with Murphy.

Pressi is a bit toen between the arguing camps but comes up with her own plan. She agrees Alleah will be listened to and that they'll stay the night. She will head up to the roof with Murphy, but will check in from time totime.

Shel volunteers for first or last watch, to provide the ability to get her spells. She wants to stay inside unless they're all going out.

Alleah plans on going to bed, mostly to reflect on her feeling of beinh abondoned.

Bliss tries to be the voice of reason. He also feels they are obligated to take the white shirts under their wing so to speak.

Murphy responds with his point of view on the decisions made, and the upcoming battle. He replies to Alleah about her choice to permanatly change her structure. And that is enough to set Alleah off again. She goes so far as to lose her appearence and go back to regualr halfling. She even calls him a hypocrite which leads Murphy to shake his head and head outside.

The first watch is underway, and everyone else is tryinh to get some sleep.

Murphy is the first to see it... a solo zombie. Noticeable in the moonlight due to its white shirt. The zombie ateps out of the woods ands looks around. It scans the building, the farm.. before turning and running into the woods.

Ooc: The ground is dirt, with vegetation.. i.e Grass.

"I wish she had not held back so much in her evaluation of me," Murphy says to Pressi. He says this in jest, but he carries great sorrow at so brutal a verbal assault. "I'm just sad, Pressi. Some things she said made sense, yet others were distortions and a twisting of truth. At least I know now what she thinks of me, and her measure of spite."

As the others drift off, and Murphy spots the apparently intelligent zombie, he nudges Pressi, and Sky. (Round 1) "A zombie scout, wearing a white shirt, just stepped to the edge of the fields, looked us over, then ran back off into the woods. I'm going to check out what is happening. I'll alert those below before I leave. The night is still young. I had hoped Alleah and I might have worked together as air elementals this evening."

As he speaks, the druid withdraws the hide from undead wand from his bandolier and hands it to Pressi. "Try this on me, would you?" He tells her the command word. (2) Whether it works or not, he gives her a kiss on the cheek. If it does not work he adds, "I'll give you a chance to try again in a moment." To both he says, "Stay above, or come below if you wish." (3) He wildshapes into a medium air elemental, then swoops in through the watching window below - where Bliss likely peers out. "Hi, Bliss!" he says in an airy voice. "It's me, Murphy. WAKE UP EVERYONE! A white-shirt zombie just showed up on the edge of the field, looked over the farm, then ran back to the woods. Make what preparations you all can here. I plan on going to check out what is happening, then will report back to you all. I'm not going to sit and do nothing. SHEL - can you use the mage armor wand I gave you upon me? (4) I am casting call lightning at the moment - though I hope not to have to use it immediately - no present plans to attack by myself - my hope is to observe unseen, and report back. I can cast call lightning storm later, if needed." He casts call lightning, a full-round casting, as he waits for the mage armor, hopefully, from Shel. (5) If she casts this upon him, he says, "My thought is to fly high, come in from the top of the trees just the far side of the cave, to about 20 or so feet above the ground, and fly back, observing who or what is in the woods, and come back this way. If they are all undead, and I have hide from undead, they'll not see me - and I have perfect flying in this form - I can avoid hitting trees, branches, and other things along the way. Then I'll be back out of the woods, and tell you what I've seen.

"Bliss, if you cast a message spell, I could communicate with you from a tiny ways within the woods, maybe, as well as across the field."

He listens to others' responses and suggestions, and reminds all of the paths they can take to avoid the thorny terrain if they wish to approach the woods... "Do you all want to try to go into the woods, or to await a scouting report here as you figure out what other preparations might be made?"

She is happily surprised by Murphy offering the party suggestions and alternatives. It really does seem like he is trying to change. "I owe it to him to do the same thing. It's a brand new day after all"

"Do zombies usually run away?" she asks as she rises from her rest "However we're going, Murphy, this spell might help you"

Bliss pats Murphy and sticks out his hand to shake his. "Don't be sad, Mister Murphy. I think we can all get along. Just don't go getting yourself killed, is all I ask."

=====

"Miss Alleah, seems to me that if these people -- who think we're heroes -- get in danger, maybe acting reckless because they think they can be heroes like us, well, maybe we should talk to them and give them some, like, well, maybe make them not so foolish? We should be heroes, and that means teaching others in addition to fighting monsters, right?"

"Aunt Priss used to say I need to set a good example. Back then I didn't get who I was setting a good example FOR, but now maybe I do?"

=====

When this zombie comes around, Bliss takes a real good look at it. (On Friday Bliss said he was taking first watch, so hope that's OK.) Is it wearing a white shirt? Does he recognize it? It seems not so mindless, and again Bliss wonders and fears if these are not regular undead.

Perception 35

If Murphy is going out alone, first Bliss asks him if he is sure. After all, it is Bliss who is a shadowdancer and has darkvision. But if the druid is resolved, Bliss is happy to cast Message, and he offers Murphy Silvie the Silver Raven.

"You can wake her up with this magic word, and then send her back with a message. Just in case." He tries hard to get the druid to take the figurine with him, either deactivated or activated and flying nearby.

Pressi struggles to think of a retort to Alleah but fails to think of anything sufficiently biting. Not that she has a particular dog in this fight (besides loyalty) or that she hasn't joined this argument in the past or that Murphy didn't say some hurtful things as well. And she is trying this new thing where she stops throwing sand in the gears. But Alleah's remarks hurt her maybe more than they hurt Murphy, and she struggled hard to keep her emotions in check.

Just as well, as she helps to separate the two. As they sit along the roof, Pressi does her best to comfort Murphy. "Some lead, some follow, and some complain. I don't know what made her so certain that your plan was the wrong choice, but you can't let her dig in. We all made mistakes, we all made the best decisions we could. And we all had the chance to lead and order you around. I think she just let fear get the best of her.... It's easy for that to turn into anger, I suppose.

"Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore. The decision has been made, and I think our defense of the farm should go well. And I think Alleah appreciated that we were willing to try it her way for a while. I just hope that we didn't give them time to recover, too."

Pressi had barely entered sleep when Murphy shook her awake, yelling about zombie scouts. "Zombies can't be scouts," Pressi mumbled in response. "That's kind of the point of zombies."

Slapping herself awake, Pressi took a glance down below (Perception 32) before attempting to use the wand (she makes three attempts but they all fail). Frustrated, she hands it back and wonders what happens next.

In response to Murphy wanting to scout alone, Pressi does get a tad worried. Yes, he has his shapeshifting and some spells, but he will also be wondering in without anyone to even leave him and come back to warn us. (And he just got through expaining he wasn't a front line fighter - the flip side being that he didn't do that well if they caught him alone.) Further, there were plenty of others that could try hitting him.

So it is that, along with Bliss, she volunteers herself. She also points out that if he really DID see a scout, then they have to lock down the farm and keep anything from coming in - and that they could use his help in that regard.

If anyone else offers to try the hide from undead wand, she gives it.

Murphy appreciated Pressi's earlier words of comfort and counsel. Later, as she awoke, he said, "You're right, but these are special zombies, or some sort of undead. Let me know if there's a better word." With the wand not working for the moment in Pressi's hands, he thanks her for trying, and takes it below to Alleah.

"Thank you, Alleah for the spell. Peace?" he asks her. "Also, might you use this wand of hide from undead on me?" His airy grasp passes it to her, then he reminds her of the command word. "I think that hiding from undead will be a key towards safe scouting under the circumstances. You can hold on to it for a bit in case any others need to use it - maybe it would be good for Kezzem and his pony Rumpus, if he is planning to ride forth.

"Thank you, Bliss, for the message spell, and for Silvie, I will put her to action if it seems a good idea out there. And I will do what I can to keep from getting killed, of course." Taking her in a deactivated state, Murphy makes certain he understands how she works from Bliss - though he has seen him activate her before. "Pressi will be glad you sent Sylvie along with me, I think!"

He says to Sky, "Sounds like a good plan - but it might be good for you and Pressi to get hide from undead, too, so they can't see you until you launch your arrows. Maybe let them get a bit closer before you loose your arrows - but you'll know better than I."

"Kezzem, it's been almost a minute since the fellow disappeared back in the woods. Certainly you could go in pursuit of him, if you choose. My aim right now is to fly swiftly (260'/round) above the trees, and come down in the middle of the woods, then scan from just the other side of the cave, and all the way back here. If you ride forth, likely I'll come upon you on my way back, if you need help. It seems like the rest are thinking of defending from here. It's your call, I just want to make sure we understand what we're doing. If more undead wait within the woods, near the edge, it may prove a trap for you. Unless you and Rumpus both get a tap from the hide from undead wand I lent to Alleah. With that, they can't see you or hear you. You could be momentarily almost as sneaky as you used to be!"

Seeing the presently taciturn Lance, he asks, "What are your thoughts? You want to get the hide from undead, and go along with Kezzem?"

"Shel, if you can cast invisibility on me, if there is a non-dead necromancer looking around, that will afford me additional protection - but it's up to you."

Once he has the hide from undead active (and invisibility, if Shel chooses to cast it), he is ready to fly fast and far, carrying Sylvie (which he was holding when the spell(s) was(were) cast, so she should be 'hiding' (and invisible, if cast) with him, too, unless and until he releases the construct to fly on its own).

His actions may then depend upon what he sees, but he may then fly back through the trees (Fly: 18 for first leaving the cave area, Fly: 27 for the rest of the way to edge of woods), observing what there is to observe (Perception: 31). Murphy yells to wake everyone as he sets his plan in motion. He hands Pressi his hide from undead wand and asks her to use it on him. He then changes into an air elelmental and heads into the house. ( stopping there, remember 1 post a day please.)

Alleah tries to make peace with Murphy and casts Cat's Grace on him. Luck is with her this time as the spell works.

Kezzem gets Rumpus ready and is prepared to follow Murphy on land when he heads out.

Bliss tries to play peacemaker with both Murphy and Alleah. When the Zombie comes out he tries to see if he recognizes them but he does not. He offers Silvie to Murphy when he is ready to go.

Pressi tries the wand but it does not work. She adds that if a scout was seen they need to lock down the farm and defend it.

Sky prepares himself with a a few arrows, planning on skewering anything that appears.

Nothing else comes out of the woods. No sounds, no zombies.

Bliss has the ability to hide in the shadows. He is much harder to spot in the dark than any of us. Flying puts you between the ground and the stars and make it easier to see you. If they can see you then they can find us. If we're going, then let's be smart about it. Bliss leads the group, maybe 30 or 50 feet ahead of the rest of us. Noone strays from the main group until Bliss gives the signal. A mindless undead wouldn't have run away. We won't be automatically hidden by the Hide from Undead spell. Thoughts?"

I could fly up to 450ft ahead, with lowlight vision and a DeathWatch spell I could easily spot them, and use a message spell to report back what I see. Even if they saw me, they'd think me a natural animal. I could go faster ad an elemental but a natural form is probably better. I'd think against undead, being the fastest and best able to detect them, it might make me a very good scout. I even have a Daylight scroll ready. For the balance of Murphy's actions and discussions with each person, please read his previous post.

"Why so full of anxiety, Alleah?

"To the best of my knowledge you are the sole cleric in this group. You are the only one who could cast hide from undead if you so chose - and the only one who without doubt can use this wand without possibility of failure, if what I have been taught be true. This will now make the third - or is it fourth? - time I have asked you to cast it on me, and each time previously you have ignored my direct request or declined.

"Yes, Bliss is the best at hiding in shadows. I did ask him earlier to fly in overview with me, but he became busy. I think your idea excellent for him to scout ahead of the balance of the group, if he wishes to do so. With the spells requested, and most granted, I am not his equal at stealth, yet am not so far off, either. Stars? Clouds cover the sky, and rain mists among us.

"I am the fastest at movement in the air, to the best of my knowledge and, as you know, air elementals have perfect movement. I can change direction sharply in the width of a blade of grass, or over the wings of a moth.

"I'll not be tethered, 'Leah, if that tether reduces our capabilities. It's your choice whether I go forth with the benefits of hide from undead, or not. Most undead cannot see, hear, or smell creatures warded by this spell. Even extraordinary or supernatural sensory capabilities, such as blindsense, blindsight, scent, and tremorsense, cannot detect or locate warded creatures. Yes, some undead have a chance of overcoming the spell effect, but not all do. Shel is providing invisibility - that makes it significantly harder for any to notice me. I plan to look, and return and report. I do not intend to get close enough for any to strike me. I have dark vision.

"The wand I bought specifically for this purpose, for this task, to help us against the undead. Do you choose to block that purpose? Because I am going, with or without it, though without it your anxiety should increase somewhat. I've been there once already. It is not greatly distant. I have bent some in your direction. Will you reciprocate? It will help. You can use it on others, if you and they desire, as well.

"Please."

Alleah casts DeathWatch on herself and shrugs. She says quite calmly "I don't know if I would say bent some. You have stayed 1 hour in a house you agreed to spend the night. You ignored my request to stay the night in the house, which you had agreed to. But you did say you would listen to reasonable suggestions when I had them. In this case, I can fly perfectly as well, and in fact faster than you in elemental form. I could fly 350ft as an air elemental compared to your 300ft. Gargul's travel blessing aids me in flight, whereas your longstrider spell does not. Instead I would take the form of an animal, and be able to fly 450ft. 540ft if I push myself. I can detect undead better than you thanks to my DeathWatch spell. And as you said, I am a cleric. I am also a Bloodwitch. Combined I have a number of powers ready to use against the undead. Rather than pick a fight with me, give me a reasonable explanation why on this occasion you are a better aerial scout? If the scouting was underground, I agree, your earth elemental form would warrant you scouting ahead. If we were against natural animals, I agree, your animal empathy could not be questioned making you a perfect scout. Against constructs? Forget it. My spells are next to useless. But in this instance - against undead - you have to cede that I am the better option. If the party wishes an aerial scount, then I intend to do it. I plan to scout ahead, and if you choose to follow me I expect you would believe to have reasonable justification to do so."

She then uses the wand of hide undead - on herself first before Murphy - and then transforms into an air elemental. With her increased speed she will be quite far ahead of Murphy, should he have justification for his scouting.

We should stay within sight of one another - er, though I'm invisible - so I'll keep an eye on you, at least part time - since we're looking to see what else is around us. Your objection has been that you don't like people traveling alone. I agree that two are better than one. My eyes are just a bit sharper than yours, though in that regard your tongue beats mine," he says with a smile, hoping she realizes he is teasing her, not attacking her. He lays out the route he had planned to take (as explained toward bottom of post for Monday July 24th, 2017 4:47:23 PM).

"Let's go."

If she will, Murphy accompanies Alleah on a scouting expedition.

"Murphy, I understand that you like scouting and not being tied down. However, when you scout you go at your own pace, and as far as you choose. All I'm asking - all I've been asking - is for you to share that role and give others the same opportunity. Stay with the party, and let someone else scout ahead. Every encounter to date you go ahead first. Show that you are versatile and a team player and stay with the party. If you choose to follow me, I won't be slowing down. If it comes to it, I will do the same time and time again until the task IS sharedI have tried to reason with you that we each have strengths versus certain foes. Undead are my forte. Please accept that and stay with the group"

Pressi (Melvin) - AC 22 (25), HP 77, CMD 26

Pressi began to feel some whiplash now that Alleah wanted the entire group to go out. (To compromise and also save Murphy from himself, but still...) As they proceeded to explain all the ways they could make insane speeds, Pressi felt a little embarrassed. She didn't even have the monk levels to move quickly.

She accepts the mage armor boost from Shel.

She almost freaks as Lance begins to walk towards the undead. "I've never been that stupid, right?" Grumbling, she moves to keep up with him and preferrably the rest of the group.

"Ok, enough, both of you," she responded to Alleah and Murphy's bickering. "You have both proven yourselves to be the manliest of manly, so Lance better catch up. When this is over, the two of you can lock yourself in a room and have all the sky wonder races you desire and scream yourselves blue.

"In the meantime, I would like to remind you both of a couple of things. Alleah, I would like to remind you that you had the chance to be leader and turned it down because you couldn't stand the weight on your shoulders that Murphy feels. Murphy, I would like to remind you that we all get touchy whenever any of us takes a risk, whatever benefits or precautions, and Alleah would encase you in pillows if she could. And both of you, I would like to remind you that I am QUITE clever on taking out my frustrations. So are we done here? Or am I really going to have to bring out the double entendres about my strength and grapple ability. Don't think I won't do it."

Shel will cast Haste on the collected party members, to make sure everyone's math is wrong after all the calculations. "If you two want to scout, that's fine with me. The rest of us can either wait here, or follow at our own pace. If something bad happens to one of you, just scream and the rest of us will come running!". With that said and the Haste spell cast, Shel follows with the main group.

DM Shawn - The Farm

Alleah makes a suggestion that if they are going go go out that Bliss and not Murphy does the scouting. She makes mention of how his abilities with the shadows make him the best when dealing with shadows.

Shel takes the wand and casts Mage Armor on Both Murphy and Pressi. She offers to cast invisibility if the group will wait. (Their choice.)

Alleah throws out the idea of her taking a more natural form and scouting ahead to the cave. She feels more prepared with her deathwatch spell and asks Shel for an invisibilty too.

Murphy asks why Alleah is so full of anxiety. He questions why she hasnt used the spell on him yet as it will protect him from being spotted. He adds he bent some her way, and to return the favor.

Lance addresses the obvious.. and decides to take matters into his own hands and heads into the woods.

Alleah casts her deathwatch spell and then questions whh Murphy thinks he is the better scout. She says vs other enemies he is.. but vs undead it is her. She does cast the Hide from Undead on both her and Murphy.

Bliss agrees with Shel and decides to stick with her. Mookie and him hop alongside her.

Murphy questions Alleahs tactics and uses her words against her. That two sets of eyes are better then one. He throws out the idea of Alleah slowing up and the two of them going together.

Sky realizes he is not needed to scout so instead asks for some help on Cudgel. His thoughts bring him back to Meko.

Alleah again asks Murphy to stay with the group and to be a team player. She doesn't agree to Murphys plan and instead will continue her own plan if need be.

Pressi is happy to except the mage armor and then questions the stupidity of Lance for heading off. She decides to run up alongside him and accompany him.

She then admonsihes both alleah and Murphy about their roles, but manages to do it with levity.

Shel wants to throw a monkey wrench in the plans and casts haste . ( everyone effected) she then accompanies the main group.

Alleah throws in that Murphy isn't the leader .. that they are all equals.

Kezzem and Rumpus get the haste and follow along.

So Lance heads off.. Pressi, Sky, Shel, Bliss are following... Alleah and Murphy are still going tit for tat.

Thats when the scream happens... some gutteral yell from somewhere in tbe woods in the direction of the cave.

About to answer Alleah, briefly, he listens as Pressi interposes. And smiles. "Thanks, Shel," he says.

Alleah continues what Murphy is beginning to think of as delaying blather, and there is a scream, and...

Murphy tells everyone about how many yards it will be through the woods to the cave, says, "Debate over. Fly together?" He nods invisibly, then takes off, hoping she will fly as well.

Murphy carries out the plan he laid out, heading up into the air to angle just above the treeline, aiming for a point just beyond the area above the cave. If Alleah has come along, he quietly says, "Down here," as she is likely not able to see him... unless she flew ahead and guessed well the right spot. He descends below the treeline to about 20' above the ground, and takes a look around, and listens for a moment. He believes they will need to enter the cave at some point. He remembers mentioning they may have needed to save someone. He regrets even acceding to remaining at the house for a while. Pillows. He also thinks of Sky's comment.

Alleah is done arguing. As the others head out, she turns to Bliss.

"I'm sorry friend, but I cannot continue on this journey. I came to be an equal, not a subject."

"It is clear that Murphy only cares on playing the hero card as a means to stroke his own ego. He rushes off to leave all in his wake, leaving his friends in danger, yet relying on them to save him. Case in point: How far do you think he is to the cave by now? How far are the party behind him?"

"He refuses to give an inch. I asked him not to rush off; to spend one night in a house and he gave me 1 hour. I asked him to let someone else be the scout, he refused. When was the last time he agreed to a suggestion of mine? Or yours?"

"Which also has me wondering, why was I asking? Who is he that we need to ask his permission?"
Alleah sounds tired "And as for thinking I should have asked permission to change shape into an elemental? I don't think I will ever understand what goes on in his head. His crown has slipped so low on his head that it covers his ears and squeezes his brain. That or we missed a bit when we raised him from the dead" She chuckles but the exhaustion is evident.

"I have no time for those who don't know how to be a team-player. I am done banging my head against this wall. Goodbye my friend. Don't let him treat you like a footstool"

As the party head towards the cave, Alleah silently heads in the other direction leaving the deciduous trees behind her.

It was a struggle to keep her mouth shut as Alleah continued on. Everyone knew that getting the last word was key to winning the fabulous prizes... was it flatware this month? At any rate, she still believed Alleah as one of the more level headed of the group. Surely, after this bout of letting off steam, she would at least acknowledge her hyperbole, and her professionalism would... nope, there she goes, heading back without a second thought as to the rest of the team. Fantastic.

"Good job showing the team player non-ego mindset," she shouted back. "You and Murphy are clearly as different as night and later that night."

She turned back to the rest of the group, particularly Murphy and Lance. "Ok, we keep going. Are we just storming the cave or did you have something in mind?"

Bliss is too in shock of what to do, but continues followimg the others into the woods.

Kezzem throws a joke Alleah's way.. but little else.

Pressi is shocked it has come to this and lets Alleah know her and Murphy are more similar then they think. She asks what the gameplan is.. storm the cave or something else.

Bliss shows the mindset he is in.. as none of the jokes bring any smile to his face.

Lance is the first to arrive at the cave.. followed by Murphy and then the rest.

No movement is coming from the cave.. no noise either. Whatever screamed is now quiet.
