Shel sees the change immediately in Kezzem. She wasn't sure what it was, but his countenance seemed to change. She smiled for some strange reason.
When she noticed the other figure, she kept her head low. She didn't want to do anything to attract undue attention from a God.
Kendry sees some sort of, of, something. Kezzem is changing before their eyes. Less sneak. More soldier. More. More uprightness? A bit further along, a tormented soul. A test?
Over there - it is this realm's Lord. Looking that way for a moment, he returns his focus to Kezzem. What are you going to do, buddy? he thinks towards their friend.

Having no idea what is going on, Sky just looks around, until he hears a very rare sound. Meko let loose a quiet wimper. The Greg wolf had saw Gargul. The lord of life and death had actually scared Sky's brave companion.
Sky's gaze moves to Gargul, a hand falls to pet Mekos head, between his ears.
"Its OK boy, were here to bring back Kezeem, not petition for our own lives "

Alleah immediately recognises the Lord of Life and Death. She turns to watch Kezzem. This is no doubt a trial for him. A trial he must complete.
But there is no way Alleah can let Kezzem stand alone - in life or in death. This may be his trial, but she will support him in it as best she can.
She steps forward from the party and stands just behind Kezzem's left shoulder. "We're here for you Kezzem" she whispers "Where you go, we go." Alleah isn't sure what she really can do to help Kezzem at this point, so she just stands ready. Clutching her lucky coin (her holy symbol) tightly, she stands ready to defend Kezzem should the soul in front of him attack.
"Nice poem by the way. I just hope they're not your last words"

Shel would normally have Alleah's back, helping their friend. But that Gargul was just so intimidating. She again stood back hoping that Kezzem's newfound healing ability was enough to help him pass the test in the god's eyes.
Murphy steps up opposite Alleah to offer what support he might near Kezzem's right shoulder - letting his friend lead, but prepared to support him however he might in overcoming the soul-sapping arboreal threat. "Can you channel positive energy now, Kezzem, to help her? Maybe that's what you are doing with your hands?"

Kezzem steps forward to touch the trapped soul in the evil tree filled with negative energy. He lays hands on the soul and it has two effects.
First, it seems to take away some of the pain from the creature as he is healed. Second, it seems to make the soul look more substantial...maybe. It could be a hopeful perception. Third, the tree seems to suffer a bit. However, shortly it is gaining strength again.
"GOOD! NOW CHANNEL THAT POSITIVE ENERGY. YOU MUST DIRECTLY OPPOSE THE NEGATIVE ENERGY. DRIVE IT OUT. CONQUER IT"
Then he takes off his brooch--a grey lidless eye--and tosses it at Kezzem. It attaches itself somehow to Kezzem insubstantial hand.
"USE THIS....PALADIN. I BELIEVE IN YOU AS YOU BELIEVE IN ME."
With the arrival of the holy symbol of Gargul, Kezzem becomes fully aware of all his abilities and responsibilities. He knows instantly what to do.

The party arrives, well as close as is possible due to the Woldsblood and offers encouragement, advice, and support.
Suddenly, with a popping sound, Gime the Imp appears jumping in and within the party.
"There once was a soul from Wold. Who died when he was very old. Got stuck on a tree, A paladin set him free, Because he was good and bold."
The imp dances around with glee in a sing-song voice,
"Set him Free! Set him Free!"

Part of Shel questioned why the imp was cheering for this 'good' soul to be set free. Imps are evil, aren't they, she thought as she kept a close eye on the devil thing. Maybe, if this were a bad thing, the god would have pointed that out. Basically, Shel kept her mouth shut as she waited to see how this played out.

The imp startles Sky, but fully surprises Meko, who growls and tenses up when it appears. When it starts its song the wolf loosens up.
Murphy is happy to see Gargul in such a role of encouragement. Then Gimp the Imp arrives - he has heard of him, but never before saw him. He takes in what the fellow looks like, planning to make a few sketches once he can find a time to do so.
Mainly though, he does what he can to join in to encourage his friend, Kezzem.

Bliss is transfixed by the tableau before him. When Kezzem succeeds at his task, the little guy claps!
Then he looks around, abashed, and sticks his hands in his pockets.

As Kezzem channels positive energy, the tree seems to try and hold on to its victim. The soul screams in pain, but the word he is screaming is, "YES!!!"
As the power builds, the tree begins to writhe and shake, branches breaking off. Then with a huge sound the tree explodes shooting into the air.
The soul, now once again floating down the river turns towards Kezzem. "You have my eternal thanks." Then with a smile and an anticipation, he faces the Isle of the Dead in the distance and his rest.
Gimp the Imp shouts with joy. "That was awesome!"
Gargul speaks one last time. "LIVE. YOU HAVE MUCH TO LEARN. LEARN IT WELL, PALADIN."
He turns slowly walking away into the shadows.
Kezzem begins to live and realizes he'd better, very quickly, get out of the Woldsblood. But there is no need. He floats upwards towards the party, and is set down gently.
Gimp lowers his hands, and then turns to Bliss. He looks at him very strangely. Then, having made some sort of a decision, breaks into a huge grin and rushes forward to give him a huge hug. And then pops out.
Right away the Shadowlands begins to fade and the party returns to the Prime Wold. They return where they left.

The raven turns to look at Kezzem. "You look different," he says. "Well, at least you're alive. Good thing too -- this party would be pretty dull without you around, sure." He hops onto Kezzem's shoulder and gives his hair a tug.

Gimp's words were apt. That filled Murphy with awe. Never did it enter his head that one day, Kezzem would turn towards the challenging goal of being an upright champion of righteousness. And, on this very day, that is what he has done.
Then Gimp the Imp tells Bliss that there is reconciliation between the former child harpy and the Lord of Life and Death. Not in so many words, yet... so.
After they unfade into the cave where wait seven goblins and six halflings, Murphy blinks. He hears Bliss and Mookie. He agrees with the raven, and smiles at what Shel says.
"It's a good thing you don't generally talk as much as I do, Kezzem, or we'd still be down there. Or over there. In there." He stops talking and walks over to give the newborn paladin a big embrace. "Welcome back to the living. I think you've chosen wisely, buddy."
He looks to the others who awaited their return. "Time to figure out how to get us ALL out of here, wouldn't you agree?" But he then returns his attention to Kezzem. "But first - any words of wisdom, Sir Kezzem?"

"So, how 'bout we backtrack the way we came in? There's still some commotion and the giants will be fighting amongst themselves for while. Before long they'll tire of that and look for the culprits."

Probably should check in with Domi myself now that I'm the team rogue again. Anyway, the big change is that when someone asks a question about his past, he actually has to answer. So get them in now, folks."
She gives a side eye view towards Alleah but moves on to hug Kezzem as well. "It's great to have you back, but... I'm going to miss the old guy, too. Going to be an adjustment thinking of you as the "by the book" one."
"Anyway, I concur that we should probably get going as fast as possible."

Bliss is eager to go too, although he has developed a bit of a hatred towards cannibals and would not mind offing a few more halfling-eaters.
But there are others than himself here to think about. "We have to get these former prisoners to safety first of all," he says. "I just hope the Second Breakfast Club can fix the tower so that we don't have to come out here and do it all again in a month."
He begins to shepherd everybody to get all the loot and people together and to make our way out of this horrid place.

Murphy concurs we need to leave soon. First, though, he asks about healing. "Several of our people are still wounded. Before we brave the giants, let us attend to that, Bliss - as well as have at least the sketch of a plan. Our goblin friends here, too, may have some insights." For the goblins, he reminds them of the pay bonus they'll receive once they get back through the thick of things. He does ask them what they figure is the best way out - fully expecting to get several contradictory responses, but, who knows? - one of them might have a good idea.
For Pressi, he taps her twice with his wand of CLW, healing 6+5=11 hp.
"Marching order, planned defenses, disguises and subterfuge. Friends, before we leave this cave, let's agree to those things - then go. As before - unless someone has a good case for me doing otherwise, I will bring up the rear, ready to respond as needed."
He pauses a beat, then adds quietly, "Keep in mind the wounded ogre mage who absquatulated a few minutes ago after alluding possibly to Uthvas Bethud, the necro-taxidermancer."
As plans are discussed, he takes out coils of silk rope, and begins making what some of his friends might recognize as some sort of harness - but of a larger size and rounder shape than he has fashioned before, with several small loops added along about a quarter of its circumference, and what look to be little rope ladders along two sides.
As soon as the group is ready to go, he accompanies them.

Bliss turns to Shel. "Miss Shelly, you are low on spells, so you stay with the refugees and Mookie, close enough that we can help you if you get in trouble, but out of the line of fire of the giants. How's that sound?"
Bliss is getting excited. "Come on, everybody! Are we heroes or scaredy-cats? Let's rid the Wold of these cannibals, or at least some of them, and then retreat when we NEED to, not while we still have some good fight left in us!"

Pressi breathed in slowly as various wand charges washed over her. While she lacked the heft granted by bears endurance, at least her wounds had healed up completely.
It had been a moment of embarrassment, what felt like a second battle to which she was at someone's mercy. Yes, Hairshirt was hardly a garden variety giant and he still needed to get in a lucky shot. But still, to simply go down even with all those buffs, to finally realize that she'd never keep up on the front lines. And now, she couldn't help but feel replaced. A monk that somehow seemed much sturdier than her. And Kezzem's a paladin now? If the team rogue switched to the front lines, then where did that leave her?
She was suddenly aware of the weight in her pockets. Her toolkit. Her past, beckoning again. "Guess you never truly let anyone get away, huh Waard," she said to herself.
"Ok," she said out loud. "But many of us used up our disguises long ago, so we're really going to need to play the part. Anyone who needs smokesticks or thunderstones, including goblins or ex-prisoners, come to me, and we can use these as cover. If anyone has obscuring mist or illusion spells, it might be time to break it out too. In fact, might be time to use up whatever's left."

Bliss says, "What are we waiting for!? Let's get out there! Move to the edge of the camp, get the non-combatants a clear path out, and turn and fight! Make our way out when we are too hurt to do more!"
Before the party leaves the cave, Bliss casts Reduce Person on the noncombatants. "This will help you hide and make you a smaller target. It does not even slow you down," he says.
"The Mage Armors should still be in effect since the last fight," he says. "But if you need one, let me know!" He taps Mookie and Sylvie.
Just before the fighting breaks out, Bliss drinks his potion of Protection from Evil and reads his scroll of Cat's Grace.

"One more thing. If you see a large elephant appear in your midst, it's me. And this," he says holding up the harness he has been working on," will be the harness you can climb up on, and strap yourself down with. But let's see how far we can get without having to resort to elephant."
He puts his elephant harness in his haversack, hands to Pressi the money for payment to the goblins once they get to the exit from the valley, skin intact. In halfling, he says, "This is for the goblins once they get us to a relatively safe exit from the valley, one bag each, as we promised them. If I'm shape changed, I won't be able to pay them." [7 bags of 40 gold pieces, all in one big bag]
For the time being, he takes the hat of disguise from the party treasure, and makes himself look very goblin-like [disguise: 33 (nat 20)]. "Hey, call me Turfart," he tells the goblins. "I will complain that someone took my pinecone, and I want it back right now."
"All right, everyone ready?" Unless someone says they are not ready, Murphy heads out the cave with the others.
In goblin, then in common, he says, "I want my pinecone back, NOW - or someone is going to get his butt kicked!" as he heads back the way they came - threading his way with his friends to stay away from biguns. "I found my fattest grub, ever, right next to that pinecone!"

Alleah still has her goblin disguise on but keeps her head low. With all the commotion the giants probably wouldn't care if she looked like a goblin, and orc, or a halfling. They were probably just looking for something to club.

Pressi shakes her head as Bliss spoils for a fight. "Son, with all due respect, let us not snatch defeat from what was quite honestly a narrow victory that could have been more devastating. We are not avengers. The mission is over, and if you decide to let your emotions get the best of you, you'll have to do it without me. But maybe you'll find a table to hide under." She softened a bit. "Look, I'd like to cut down as many as possible too, but we have duties beyond satisfying our blood thirst. With this army ended, we can focus on other priorities."
She prepared a thunderstone for throwing, a smokestick in her bandolier. Covering her face and activating her hat of disguise (Disguise 22), she began to carry out Murphy's plans and takes the goblin payments.
Readied Action: throw the thunderstone if anyone gets too close or threatening.

Okay - the harness is not fully finished. He only had time, then, to make the basic framework, and a rope with some loops along the back, and one partially done ladder down one side when it's time to go - rather than the full-fledged model. Murphy has made about six different harnesses for his different forms (though he has undone and repurposed them, not keeping earlier models), so he is used to making them, but it will not be as easy or useful as he had hoped. Trying not to slow up the party - and I already subtracted time from remaining spells to allow for some of the time he was spending on it. Let's keep the time as is, and he stows the harness as is.

As the group travels through the camp, headed to the edge of the chaos, Bliss says to Pressi, "Miss Pressi, if folks want to go home, then me too. I just think it is a shame not to fight when we are all in good health, and when these cannibals need to be taught a lesson about halflings."
Of course, he goes with the group consensus.

Without a ready way to change her image, Shel will cast Invisibility on herself as the group exits the cavern. She didn't plan on fighting the entire army out there. They'd done their mission, and without leadership, she trusted that they would soon dissipate.
"We don't need to go looking for a fight. I say we try to get through with as little resistance as possible."

The group prepares disguises and spells and heads out into the turbulent warzone.
Right away they witness a rock smash a goblin.. just crushing him.
No creature pays any direct attention to the group but some defitnily notice the group of goblins and there halfling "prisoners".
Finally a stone giant moves towards the group.
"Hey.... hey... Goblins... give me one of those halflings . I'm hungry."
[Um - all the halflings are hooded, as established back in Hairshirt's cave. Sky cut up the ice/frost giant's clothing to make them rough cloaks / hoods to make it tough to tell their race.]
Goblin Turfart (Murphy) with a goblin accent, says in common, "These are not YOUR snacks, stone giant. They are due elsewhere. There's a whole bunch of food in Hairshirt's cave, though, and he's not eating it." If the giant moves in his direction in an aggressive fashion, Murphy takes evasive action slightly away from the group to draw him away from the halflings. If he moves toward the halflings, he casts expeditious excavation centered about 5 feet in front of the stone giant, filling the air in a 15'x15' area with dirt, dust and debris, obscuring the giant's vision, located so as to be between him and any vision of the fleeing group. Only if he moves toward the halflings.
If not, and he's not pursuing Murphy, or other members of the group, but just talking, then Turfart will continue talking with him, directing him back toward the stone giant leader's cavern. [b]"No joke. There are tons of meat to eat back there. Grab a few of your friends and go feast. Or pig out by yourself."[b]

Pressi didn't know who she was angrier at. The giant that couldn't possibly leave well enough alone. Bliss for not having enough blood. Alleah and Murphy for seriously thinking that this world would actually allow them to just go home. Herself for being what she once accused Shel of, for being so tired of all this that she can't even bring herself to make yet another attack. She decided that she was angriest at the gods, who clearly lied to her about how she could be anything she wanted and then threw reminders otherwise with sadistic glee without even a break to rest.
Deciding that the stone giant is properly distracted by everyone else (Bluff 17 to aid another if not), Pressi dove forward to the nearest concealment, preparing for whatever comes next. (Stealth 30. May have -10 penalty.) If Domi was watching her now, she thought bitterly.

Invisible Shel noticed the strange reaction from Pressi. Shel didn't know it exactly, but she shared some similar feelings with Pressi right now. She moved next to the woman and cast Invisibility on her as well. "We are invisible .... we can sneak out of all this fighting right now. One of those giant stone will end up killing one of us, if we don't get out of here now!"

The stone giant seems not to care what Murphy says.. and takes a step forward. Bliss' bolt flies past the the giants head. Just missing.
" That was stupid.." the giant begins before stopping in its tracks at Allah's command.
" Okay.. I'll do that. " . With that the giant turns around and walks away.
Pressi was angry at the whole situation and Shel sensed it, and cast an invisibility on her to make them both disappear
Kezzem thinks of his old ways and plans on bluffing before realizing his new path.
The rest of the way is of little action. No more giants make any moves on the group.. and in fact they see a few spots where ogres or orkswork in a group to take down a giant.
Finally they get to the ridgeline, and out of site of the battles.
"Whew!" says Murphy as they arrive at what seems to be a point of relative safety following the running of the gauntlet of the valley of the gathered giants. "Thank the heavens we all made it through intact. All present and accounted for, right?" he asks, taking a census.
"So, we have Bizig, Gutplug, Scabby, Knockhead, Bungleak, and Socket among the goblins. Lance Foxwell, Eberulf Bottin, Elsia Boffin, Sarama Shortbutton, Odger Twofoot, Yodo Proudbottom, and Tomarin Earthshanks among the halflings freed from the giants.
"And, for Humble's Sword, Shel Kromnite, Alleah Highhill, Bliss, Mookie the raven, Pressi Silverglove, Sir Kezzem Blacklyng Quickfoot, Terimus Skyland Underhill, Meko the grey wolf, and I - Murphy Leafwin Pipewood."
He pauses. "Pressi will keep our promise to you, our goblin allies. You did very well. May the gold you have earned help you out. I consider you our friends. If you want to travel with us for a day or two, you may, or, go your own ways, as you wish."
To the Sword and the other halflings, he says, "Let's keep going, and find a place to rest after we put some distance between us and this ruined valley. Unless you think we should stay, and cause more problems among the giants. I don't know whether Uthvas will somehow try to get someone to pursue us - or somehow send someone ahead to set an ambush. My vote, though, is to return to the valley."
If there is time as people discuss options, Murphy will spend a little more time developing the harness he began to make earlier. Still may proove useful.
He turns to Lance. "Any interest on your part, Lance, on the notion of joining up with us, Humble's Sword?"

Seriously though, as much as I would like to find Uthvas and smite him and his not-so-little taxizombies, I have to agree with Murphey. We need to get all these halflings and goblins out of here first."

To the team, "I really was just trying to position myself better in case of an attack. Really." It was going to be difficult to figure out this new fighting style or to sufficiently swallow her pride. (Though she did discuss with Shel the use of an invisibility spell in a fight, perhaps in the middle. She'd have to drop back and then forward, but for one more sneak attack...)
Paying the goblins the rest of what was promised, she agreed that there didn't seem to be any point staying or attacking (although, they could set up ambushes to pick off giants one at a time). The giants didn't seem to have anything in the way of strategy or resources, so finding another high profile target seemed off the menu. And it isn't like they had any idea if Uthvas was even on this plane.
"By the way, Kezzem, am I actually going to have to teach you the Lawful way to lie? Hoenstly, you didn't even try an affect of indignation."
