Scene 2 - Nice day for a ride

OOC: if the a griffon requires that much meat per day, count all the griffons on that side of the mountain, count how much meat all the giants need per day, and then add the meat the hawkmen will need, I do wonder how the mountain's wild game can sustain that kind of predation even in the best of times for a month, much less the time they've all been there.

Nikolai packs up this stuff and is ready whenever everyone else is.

DM RobC - "Let's go then"
Monday May 17th, 2021 3:11:22 AM

Everyone gives the nod and Pru casts the teleportation spell. It goes off without a hitch.

It only takes a moment for your eyes to adjust from the stony interior of the Citadel to the sunlight shining on the prairie.

The skies are clear and you can already start to feel the warmth of the rising sun. It's still quite early in the morning but it promises to be a lovely day - in terms of weather at least. There's no wildlife about that you can see right now.

Shadow Mountain lies some 25 miles directly south of where you currently stand. About 15miles away to the south west is Drago Hamlet. There are no trails or paths about. Just grasslands and the occasional copse of trees.

The griffons look to you for direction.

As he scans his self-assigned sector, he wonders what the weather is going to be like. Probably wrong, he thinks to himself.

The party all know their roles and like a well oiled machine set to tasks. You set up a perimeter and make sure that the immediate area is secure and free from any sign of hostiles. Anna and Sigvar take to the air but don't see anything terribly exciting.

There are very few clouds in the sky, the breeze is gentle and the horizon looks clear. Tinker is pretty sure the weather is going to be pretty good here today. No natural storms or anything like that, nor an extreme heat wave. Just a nice spring day. The land to the north looks clear. No signs of movement save for the wind rolling through the grasses.

Most people would think there weren't any creatures about, but then there's Nikolai. He can see a few signs that suggest animals have been about at some point. Some crushed grasses suggest that something ventured from east to west recently. He'd guess a large animal - a horse or some such. Nothing to get worked up about.

"We would fly there directly." Ceres answers Trayvin. "It's safer for us in the air. Less people."

Neither griffon looks particularly comfortable right now.

The party start to spread out and take up roles. Anna in dino form heads out in front to take point, Tinker brings up the rear, and everyone else sticks somewhere in the middle.

There is a suggestion for the griffons to fly on ahead. Ceres smiles and stretches out his wings, ready to take to the air. Hemera pauses though. "How long will it take you to reach us?" She casts her eye across some of the slower non-flyers.

The mountain may be 25miles away, but that's just to the base. After that will be the ascent. At the current pace it will take at least 2 days - perhaps more. Slow and steady wins the race?

Coulda stayed a bird for overhead cover, ‘specially since you are concerned about misusing gifts of the gods.”. The dwarf mentally shrugs, demonstrating it doesn’t matter either way.

He privately thinks about Michael’s proposal and chuckles. Someone may give the Halfling a pig-back ride, but he doesn’t think even Sigvar could easily accommodate an extra 300 pounds of dwarf and gear. Not that Tinker would accept even if offered! He also doesn’t think a haste spell nor his own Expedious retreat spell would do anything other than a tactical advantage.

It seems the party are split between the fast movers and the slow movers. Pru is happy to keep going at current pace and send the griffons on ahead. Nikolai is of the same thinking to send the griffons on ahead separately, although he does want the party to stick together.

Pompous is happy to try and move at a faster rate. Hustling would cut the time in half and mean the party could be at the base of the mountain by the end of the day, though they might get a few blisters on their feet and be quite fatigued afterwards.

The idea of rides is put out there. Both Ceres and Hemera had earlier agreed with Michael that they would try and carry riders, so it is an option that is still available. Anna is also happy for a small statured person to hitch a ride on her back.

The party are all just so agreeable with each other! Walk, hustle, fly, it doesn't matter to them. They'll arrive in due time.

Hear Ye Hear Ye!

I'm starting a Woldian recruitment blitz to fill what looks to be 10 spots.  We have 2 new games starting which accounts for 6 of the openings.  The other 4 are in existing non-veteran games.  The two new games will be called:

Bearclaw Keep
and
Heranmar.

The icons for these are already up on in the Career Games section, but the links just go to the LnB until the games begin.  [THANKS ROB FOR DESIGNING THOSE!!!]

I want to start with recruiting from 1) you good people and 2) inactive players.
SO!!!  If you have a friend [someone that still talks to you] talk to them and see if they want to play!  All they have to do to start the progress is to email me. [gericko@gmail.com].

I am going to send out some emails starting tonight to former players so I do not know whether this push will fill us up quickly or not.  :)  Better to play it on the safe side and talk to your friends immediately!

Enjoy your evening and the weekend AND talking to your friends about joining us!

Anna and Michael go to the front far enough to see something approaching but no so far as they can't get back to the party safely. Your DM is going to chalk this up as 70ft.

Noone accepts the offer of riding griffon-back. Ceres and Hemera take to the sky but don't venture too far away. They keep pace with the party.

The party decide to hustle it and cut the travel time in half. At this speed you'll be at the base of the mountain by late afternoon or early evening. Nikolai suggests a little pacing but that may not work. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Hustle: A character can hustle for 1 hour without a problem. Hustling for a second hour in between sleep cycles deals 1 point of nonlethal damage" Whether the party take a break or not it would still be multiple hours between sleep cycles I think. Probably won't make too much difference if Sigvar has the magic touch.}

Indeed the first few hours of travel are largely uneventful. Sigvar startles a few birds, and Tinker notices a some hares scarper away from the party. There no sign of any humanoids about though, and that includes giants and hawkmen.

Things are otherwise calm. A little over 5 hours into it Nikolai does notice a particularly low, white cloud moving against the wind. Moving towards the party in fact. It's about 400ft or so south of you and closing. You're in grassland. The grass is around 3ft high. There are no trees about for several hundred feet on either side.

Nikolai's first thoughts, judging by it's movement and his own party's elemental spells, that it is an Air Elemental and conveys that idea to the others. Hard to prepare to battle a cloud, but he holds his ground next to Pru.

Sigvar descends down to 10ft in order to deliver some healing and remove the fatigue from Tinker and Trayvin.

Pompous protects himself in case the clouds are evil, whereas Pru thinks they look totally fake. She moves in close with the party to admire them.

Tinker covers the rear of the party. He doesn't see anything approaching from the north.

Michael is concerned for the griffons and asks them to leave for a moment. They aren't going to argue and start flying back the direction the party came. They're now 80ft in the air and a bit further north than Tinker.

As it approaches it becomes clearer to see that it isn't just one big cloud, but four smaller clouds. Smaller, but still huge.

Anna improves her armor though isn't quite sure what these clouds things are. Nikolai has a good guess. Fast moving cloud-like creatures? Sounds like air elementals.

The 'air elementals' continue their approach flying right over the top of Anna and Michael as they go and descending to the same height as the griffons.

OOC: Actually, movement in the air is the same as on the ground. Diagonals count as 2 squares = 15'.
So climbing from Ground to 10' up and 10' away = 2 square move (or 15') just like if you were moving on the ground diagonally 2 squares = 15'.

They do it that way so you don't have to remember your geometry to play. :)

DM RobC - “They are attacking out employers!”  d20+25=43 ; 2d8+9=14 ;
Tuesday May 25th, 2021 4:19:26 AM

Trayvin questions whether these actually are elementals. Now that they are closer everyone can see them quite clearly and it becomes almost certain that these are in fact huge air elementals.

There is a little confusion though as to how to handle the situation.

Sigvar and Anna take to the air to try and get close to the griffons to protect them. Anna and Michael though direct them to land. They can't outrun the elementals, that's for sure. The griffons follow Michael's directions and circle behind the party, landing on the ground. Ceres snaps at the air as he does and rears on his hind legs. He's ready to fight.

Tinker comes to the same conclusion as the others. They're here for the employers, er, griffons. He unloads on the nearest air elemental plugging it with a few well aimed arrows. If it were any other creature he's pretty sure he would have hurt it a lot more. Tinker learns that they're immune to crits and have some pretty serious DR (DR10/-). This proves beyond a doubt in his mind that these are air elementals of the greater or elder variety.

Pompous creates a wall of wind around the party. The elementals aren't gaseous beings and likely won't be stopped by the wall. They might be hindered by it though. Highlight to display spoiler: {I can't see anything that would stop an air elemental from going through a Wind Wall but I like the creativity of it. The Wall will be treated as difficult terrain for them to pass through. If this isn't what you intended you can instead keep the spell if you choose.}

Pru and Trayvin just aren't sure what to do right now. I mean, the elementals haven't attacked anyone yet.

Nikolai is ready to start slinging some arrows around and gets a flaming one ready to go.

The elementals ignore most of the party and continue their approach towards the griffons. Sigvar is in the path of one of them and it slams him as it passes by. (AE3. Flyby attack. Hit AC43. Sigvar takes 14pts damage).

If it wasn't clear before then it is now: these things are hostile.

Pru gets the griffons together and teleports them safely inside the windwall. Ceres almost looks disappointed that he didn't get to bite something.

The windwall is a bit of a hindrance to Pompous' arrows, so he buffs himself instead.

Tinker laments the sale of his flying boots. But hey, based on where the party are destined there's a good chance these current boots are going to have been a good investment. He moves inside the windwall and prepares to defend himself.

AE2 does the same, drawing in close enough to bash Ceres but just beyond his reach. (Hit AC29. Ceres takes 14pts damage)

AE3 turns into a whirlwind and makes its path through Sigvar and Anna. (Anna and Sigvar to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=21pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. Note that if Sigvar is picked up then Anna won't be)

AE4 tries the same. It turns into a whirlwind and heads southerly. (If Anna or Sigvar haven't been picked up by AE3 they need to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=17pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. Note that if Sigvar is picked up then Anna won't be)

Sigvar takes a knock from the whirlwind but isn't going to let that stop him. He charges the nearest elemental and hacks at it. It lashes at him as he approaches but misses. (AoO hit AC34=Miss!) Highlight to display spoiler: {You'd beat DR10/adamantite but not DR10/-}

Pru takes another approach and just *blips* the elemental from the field.

Tinker pulls out a scroll and moves up next to Ceres ready to cast the spell. Highlight to display spoiler: {You've got me a little confused with your actions. Move action to retrieve scroll, move action to get to Ceres, standard action to cast from scroll, standard action to fight defensively. I'll go with the main part which I think was get the scroll and get next to Ceres}

Trayvin completes his summoning spell and brings an Air Elemental to the party. He isn't able to summon it next to his target, but he can get it close enough that it can fly the rest of the way. It moves to attack the opposing elemental/whirlwind and gets one good shot in. Highlight to display spoiler: {Trayvin can have something appear 25ft + 5ft/2 levels = 65ft away, but with the fly speed of these things it made the rest of the way comfortably.}

Pompous finally gets to shoot something. He unloads on AE1 for some serious damage.

Anna gets stuck in the whirlwind and goes to get some extra dexterity. Highlight to display spoiler: {Pretty sure spell like abilities still follow the concentration check rules like normal spells. Anna will need to make a DC17 concentration check to cast Cats Grace}

Nikolai isn't going to let his stature stop him from getting into the fight. He prepares to jump up and attack the nearest elemental but Pru has already blipped it away. Instead he's able to turn his attention to the other one. He gives a running jump and punches it in the underbelly as he goes. Nice.

The enemy act...

AE1 isn't going to hang around and keep getting hit. It takes a step closer to Hemera and delivers a solid blow to the griffons beak. The elemental then retreats outside of the wind wall.(Hit AC42. Hemera takes 16pts damage)

AE2 finds itself on a whole other dimension. It's probably going to be there for a while (Int check=2)

AE3 keeps hold of Anna and flies further north (Anna takes 20pts damage!)

AE4 drops out of its whirlwind form and descends, preparing to launch an attack.

The elementals have stayed outside the reach of the griffons. Hemera is looking hurt, but otherwise, as much as these things are a nuisance they really haven't hurt the party.

Sigvar swoops in to deliver some much needed healing to Hemera. The cure has an immediate effect and her cuts and bruises clear.

Tinker also gives some help to their allies, buffing up Ceres defenses. The griffon is ready to get into the fight but based on what you know about elementals like this it would be a one-sided affair and not in Ceres' favor.

Pru decides that if it worked once then she should do it again. She blips another elemental away.

Pompous prepares to shoot one of the elementals if it pops it's head back inside the windwall.

Trayvin directs his elemental to stay in pursuit of the other one. His elemental delivers another good knock to the whirlwind.

Michael isn't too happy about being excluded from the group, so he returns to the party and prepares to defend the griffons from the attackers.

Anna tries to move further down the whirlwind but finds she is quite stuck in its spin. She continues to be battered by the winds. The whirlwind is 60ft high and Anna is right in the middle. (Anna takes 19pts damage. Anna also has a –4 penalty to Dexterity and a –2 penalty on attack rolls while in the whirlwind. Ref DC27 to escape.) Highlight to display spoiler: {'Creatures trapped in the whirlwind cannot move except to go where the whirlwind carries them or to escape the whirlwind.' Nikolai flits over to where Anna is trapped in the whirlwind. It's still 80ft in the air over his head but if she drops out he'll be there to heal her. He calls out some air elemental insults, none of which can be repeated here.

The enemy act...

AE1 does another flyby on Hemera. As it breaches the wind wall Pompous plugs it with an arrow however it's not enough to stop the elemental. It attacks Hemera and backs away again. (Hit AC40. Hemera takes 13pts damage)

AE2 still hasn't worked out how to get out of the maze. AE4 is in a similar predicament.

AE3 continues to play 'keep away' with Anna.

The party look to have things well in hand. That's usually when things start to go wrong and this might be one of those times.

Pru is the first to feel it. A strong blast of wind from above catches her completely by surprise. (Pru to make a Ref Save vs DC22. Pass=17pts damage. Fail=34pts damage and knocked prone!)

Tinker, Pompous and Travyin then feel the same! A tremendous gust of wind blasting down on them from above.

Sigvar charges AE1. He dodges it as it strikes at him and he lands a solid counter in return (AoO Hits AC29=Miss!)

Pompous isn't sure how an air based attack made it through the wind wall. It would be some trick! He prepares to ping anything hostile that dares step through the wall again.

Pru is also confused as to what just buffeted her. She sends a disintegrate at AE1 to try and finish it off, but the elemental shrugs off most of the damage (Fort Save vs DC24:32=Pass!)

Michael is taken by surprise as well. He hadn't been targeted but can see the others were hit by the wind. The elementals had been attacking with their superior reach and never got close enough for Michael to give them a return-stab.

Tinker suspects there may be something invisible around. The master of these elementals perhaps? He keeps the griffons grounded while scouring for the source of the blast.

Anna comes up with a very creative way to get out of the whirlwind: make herself so big the whirlwind can't contain her! She drops heavily to the ground.

Nikolai is ready for the drop and steps to the side as Anna falls right in front of him. The elemental is indeed too high for him to reach at the moment: it's base is at 80ft. He instead readies to attack it should it get in range.

The enemy act...

AE1 is starting to run out of wind and limply bashes at Sigvar, missing on both attempts (Hit AC34 and AC28. Both miss!)

AE2 and AE4 are each lost in their separate mazes.

AE3 descends to batter both Anna and Nikolai and then flies southward, rising again as it goes. Nikolai is ready for it and his attack goes off. It doesn't stop the whirlwind but at least he got to damage it. (Anna and Nikolai to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=19pts damage. If Nikolai fails he needs to make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it)

Once again, another two blasts of wind bluster straight down on the party...

(Pompous to make a Ref Save vs DC22. Pass=22pts damage. Fail=44pts damage and knocked prone!)

Without breaking a sweat Sigvar finishes off the injured elemental. He rises into the air and prepares to defend his comrades from whatever attacker might be lurking about.

Pru sends a couple of Acid Arrows at the remaining elemental. Only one hits, but every bit helps!

Pompous warns the others and then drops the wind wall. If there is another threat about then the wind wall was perhaps hampering the ranged attacks of the party. Besides, with only one elemental about it's probably less useful now anyway.

Trayvin keeps his elemental in pursuit of the whirlwind. Just in case there is something invisible about he casts an Invisibility Purge spell. It goes out to quite a good range too!

Nikolai can see that Anna is hurt so whips out the cure staff to heal her a bit. Similarly, Anna buffs up her constitution for a little more health.

Tinker tries to think of an aberation or ooze that could create the types of wind blasts he has observed. Your DM is confident that he can think of some, but whatever this is isn't one of them. He works out that there are at least three invisible enemies flying above the party! He's pretty sure there's at least a fourth one about going for Pru. He gets his crossbow out but will need to reload it.

The enemy act...

AE2 and AE4 are still lost in their separate mazes. They're probably going to be there for a while.

AE3 gives Anna and Nikolai another fly-by. It descends, strikes them, then ascends again as it moves south. (Anna and Nikolai to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=17pts damage. If Nikolai fails he needs to make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it)

There is another gust of wind, this time it comes from the southwest of Pru! (Pru to make a Ref Save vs DC22. Pass=14pts damage. Fail=28pts damage and knocked prone and blown 5ft along the ground to the NE!)

Something invisible buzzes by Tinker, and even though he knows it's coming it hits him anyway as it passes by! (Hit FlatAC27. Tinker takes 16pts damage + 4pts sneak attack damage!

The same then happens to Pompous and Michael. Some sort of invisible 'thing' hits each of them. (Hit FlatAC25. Pompous takes 11pts damage + 5pts sneak attack damage! Hit FlatAC28. Michael takes 18pts damage + 8pts sneak attack damage!

The Invisibility Purge doesn't seem to have affected them at all.

Sigvar moves to the area around the boys getting attacked, descending near the ground since they were physically stuck (say to 16' off the deck, he has reach and should be able to engage ground targets from that height). Tinker says there are invisible foes here. He draws out a pouch of dust he had bought in case Slartanus decided to go invisible to fight, but the dragon never got that far. Tinker winces at the pain but is confident it won’t happen again: his ability to uncannily dodge even invisible opponents means they shouldn’t catch him flat-footed!

He keeps track of the invisible things and mentally calls them out to the KCs, then takes a bead on one with his repeating crossbow. Three shots gone to the elements, which means the crossbow still has two shots left. What’s more, the dwarf gives a grim smile, the heirloom of the Torvalssons has been magically enhanced with Seeking, which will negate any miss chance... hopefully.

And he aims at Invisible #1. Shot. The second shot follows into #1 (or #2 if #1 is gone). Shot.

Tinker is good enough to describe where the invisible things are, so Pru activates her Boots of Levitation and rises 10 feet. She casts a Cone of Cold, angling it to hit Invisibles 3 and 4 without hitting Sigvar. Invisibles 3 and 4 take 53 points of cold damage, DC 22 Reflex save for half.

For good measure, she casts a quickened Magic Missile at Air Elemental 3, who takes another 20 points of force damage.

Sigvar gets close enough to one of the invisible enemies to coat it in very fine, very light golden dust. His target now sparkles nicely in the sun. The sparkling though gives Sigvar a target to strike and he does so. Hard.

Tinker had thought himself out of the battle, but now is the time for a seeking weapon! He plugs the invisible attacker with two good shots

Pru is getting flustered at being blustered. The air elemental continues to burn in acid, and though your DM likes the idea of an acid whirlwind running amok, it doesn't spread from the elemental. She casts a Cone of Cold their way but they dodge most of it. (Ref Saves vs DC22: 28, 22)

Pompous sends a string of arrows at the invisible creature nearest to him. 4 arrows fly harmlessly passt it and only 2 arrows stick - one really sticks (50% miss chance rolls: 32,35,13,10,59,63)

Trayvin's trusty elemental keeps picking away at the whirlwind. He gets some true seeing in effect though.

Anna is getting a bit tired of the whirlwind so activates Iron Body presumably to give her a bit better protection.

Michael throws some dust at the invisible creature to the east of him. The chalk remains long enough for Nikolai to get a lock and light it up with Faerie Fire.

The enemy act...

AE2 is still trying to work its way out of the maze.

AE4 escapes the maze!

Invisible thing #1 flies in and slams heavily into Hemera. (Hit AC17. Hemera takes 27pts)

Invisible things #2 and #3 position themselves on either side of Sigvar and work together to try and grapple the taur. It doesn't work. (Grapple CMB: 27). One would think it might be the last mistake they make.

Visible thing #4 is airborne and out of Nikolai's reach. It's visible now so doesn't see the point in trying to hide. It steps closer to Pru and attacks, grabbing tightly at her as it does! (Hit AC34 and AC31. Pru takes 18pts + 15pts damage. Grab CMB:29. Pru is grappled!. Pru will need to make a concentration check of 39+Spell level to cast a spell)

With both Nikolai and Pru now a bit closer and higher, AE3 has a new target. It descends as it goes, and is able to tear a path right through the middle of the bunched up party! It heads south then west, whipping up dust as it goes and then ascending a little. (Pru, Nikolai, Michael, Trayvin, Pompous, Tinker, Ceres and Hemera to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=17pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. It can hold 2 medium creatures. If Pru gets picked up she is no longer grappled).

Ceres takes some blows to his wings. Hemera though looks much worse. Her head gets jarred backwards and she drops to the ground (Hemera is dying!). Ceres gives a tremendous roar and positions himself between Hemera and the invisible critter.

Trayvin sees something a little alarming. He can see another four invisible things approaching...

Ref d20 + 21 = 40 vs DC27 success

OOC: Nikolai will elect to go with Pru, figuring he can do some healing on her, so that should put him within Trayvin's healing since he would have been moved when Pru moved and before Trayvin's healing.

Question though: if Pru had been sucked up, Pru was grappled and the grappler would have HAD to be sucked up too as the grappler can only release the grapple on HIS turn which would have been next round, right?

IC: Nikolai does not hesitate to accept the invitation to escape with Pru. He knows she's been hit hard and even though he feels the healing from Trayvin, he uses the Staff of Healing on Pru, seeing that the griffons are being taken care of.

Staff of Healing on Pru: 3d8+5 = 23
Pru healed for another 23pts

Sigvar really lays into the critter in front of him. It still stands but you'd think it doesn't have much more in it. Sigvar is pretty sure one of those strikes should have done more damage (Sigvar discovers they are immune to crits and have DR10/Magic)

Tinker ducks under the worst of the wind. He makes it to Hemera to deliver some much needed healing. He has a few calming words for her as well. It wouldn't do well to lose their employer after all.

Pru finds herself in a bit of bother. Grappled and facing an oncoming whirlwind! She takes a few hits but there was never any doubt that the clever young sorceress would find a way out of it. She focuses as hard as she can and dim doors her way to safety. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Did Pru need 42 on her concentration check or 43? We'll say close enough :)}

Pompous decides now is the time to get some protection going and activates his clock. The brush with the whirlwind must have upset the archer, as in a rare occurence only one of his arrows finds its mark.

Trayvins elemental gives chase, but the whirlwind was fast and moved far from it. It takes the whole round for the elemental to catch up to it (Highlight to display spoiler: {"The whirlwind form does not provoke attacks of opportunity, even if the creature enters the space another creature occupies."}). Trayvin for his part released a wave of healing energy, including most of the party and the griffons.

Michael crawls his way over to Hemera. He pries her beak open a little and pours the healing potion into her mouth. The effect is instantaneous. Her eyes open and focus right on Michael. In her confusion it looks like she is ready to attack, but the thought quickly passes as she recognises him.

Anna blips back to rejoin the party. She takes a position to cover the flank of the griffons and protect them from any more fly-bys. The griffons are indeed well protected now, though it does mean the party are in a tight formation.

She might have been 10ft in the air at the time, but that doesn't stop Nikolai from blipping across the battlefield with Pru :) He uses the Staff of Healing to treat some of her wounds. Highlight to display spoiler: {The whirlwind went through Pru's space, not the grapplers so I'd think she'd have been ripped free. They're two different beings after all, just like how Pru is able to dim door away. It could also have been in her favor. It would have been much easier to dim door from within the whirlwind than from the grapple. Concentration check of just 19 (which Anna would autopass) compared to 43.}

Hemera is completely healed and Ceres also looks a whole lot better. He snaps at where the invisible critter is but he misses! (Miss chance: 35)

The enemy act...

AE2 wanders through the maze, quite sure that it has seen a particular intersection once before.

As a whirlwind, AE3 continues to cause trouble. It descends as it heads east before turning to abruptly go north, zig-zagging through the party as it goes. (Anna, Hemera, Ceres, Tinker, Michael, Pompous, Trayvin, Pru, and Nikolai to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=24pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. It can hold 2 medium creatures).

AE4 then turns into a whirlwind! It can't move very far this round but it does manage to move through the griffons and Anna. (Anna, Hemera, and Ceres, to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=21pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. It can hold 2 medium creatures).

UN1 does a flyby of Nikolai, clipping him as it passes by (Hit FlatAC31. Nikolai takes 17pts damage + 11pts sneak attack damage)

UN2 takes a step back from Sigvar and unleashes a gust of wind. It blows right through Sigvar (Sigvar to make a DC22 Ref Save. Pass=13pts damage. Fail=26pts damage)

UN3 gives one last throw of the dice to try and scratch Sigvar. It gets close, but not close enough. (Hit AC26 and AC30 = Misses) Ok, so it wasn't even close.

UN4 decends down to ground level. It has recharged enough to be able to also create a gust of wind. (Nikolai, Pru, Trayvin and Pompous to make a DC22 Ref Save. Pass=18pts damage. Fail=37pts damage, knocked prone, and blown 15ft NW along the ground)

The newly arriving critters all do the same.

UN5 descends to ground level and unleashes a gust of wind in a line that catches Trayvin and Pompous, if they haven't been blown away yet. (Trayvin and Pompous to make a DC22 Ref Save. Pass=16pts damage. Fail=32pts damage, knocked prone, and blown 10ft E along the ground)

UN6 descends to ground level and unleashes a gust of wind in a line that catches Tinker and Trayvin, if they haven't been blown away yet. (Tinker and Trayvin to make a DC22 Ref Save. Pass=16pts damage. Fail=32pts damage, knocked prone, and blown 20ft NE along the ground)

UN7 descends to ground level and unleashes a gust of wind in a line that catches Anna, Ceres and Pru, if they haven't been blown away yet. (Anna, Ceres and Pru to make a DC22 Ref Save. Pass=16pts damage. Fail=32pts damage, knocked prone, and blown 15ft N along the ground)

UN8 flies across the field.

Hemera and Ceres are looking pretty beat up again, and no doubt some of the party are too.

Tinker avoids AE3 and then another gust from UN6 (improved evasion =0 damage). He keeps his eye on the invisible wind bags, but has a growing realization the KCs will not be able to save the griffons. The dwarf is in nearly no danger, but has nearly exhausted all of his surprises, and has only delayed the inevitable: and that not by much.

This makes the dwarf angry. “Keep em alive if you can, Trayvin, Sigvar. I’m going to whittle down a couple enemy.”

He stows his crossbow, then picks up his urgrosh, taking a 5 foot step towards where AE4 hover above him.

Heroically, he tries to get some Devine hint at how to beat these invisible, flying, and windy assassins before they kill the griffons.

Pru takes the full brunt of the elemental's damage [Reflex save 18], but is not swept up [29]. She takes the full brunt of the other thing's damage, too, and is knocked along the ground. This places her out of range of the last attack, which is just as well because she's almost dead.

Luckily, being prone isn't really an impediment to casters. Also luckily, as more opponents arrive, they are forced to cluster closer together. Pru will now demonstrate that with a Chain Lightning.

Her primary target is formerly-invisible-and-now-visible-thing 2. Secondary targets are Air Elementals 2 and 4. Invisible things 3 and 5 are in range; DM's discretion whether Pru knows enough about their location to actually target them.

Each target takes 63 damage; Reflex save for half. The save DC is 23 for the primary target; 21 for the secondary targets.

Then she drops a Quickened Fireball where it will hit AE 3 and invisible things 3 and 8 because she is getting tired of this nonsense. They all take 24 damage; DC 20 Reflex save for half.

Sigvar delivers two good blows and dispatches one of his targets

Pru finds being low to the ground is a good spot to be - defensively speaking. She casts a Chain Lightning targeting both elementals. The both avoid the worst of it (Ref Saves 24 and 27). She follows up with a fireball. The elemental tries to avoid as much as it can, but not enough. It disappears into thin air (so to speak). UN3 is also not so lucky, as it can no longer be seen/sensed anywhere. (Ref Saves: 36, 23, 33)

Pompous looks to fire on the air elemental nearest to him but it's already been taken care of! He changes targets and attacks the other one.

Michael was all ready to fight a whirlwind with his bare hands, but unfortunately (fortunately?) Pru has already taken care of it. Michael falls to the ground. His acrobatics allows him to avoid some of the damage though (Accounting for his acrobatics, Michael takes 10pts damage + 6pts non-lethal damage from the fall and lands prone)

Trayvin gets blown about the field a little. On the bright side though, it puts him close enough to Pru to deliver some much needed healing. His elemental switches target.

Anna changes form once again. She sure likes to do that!

Nikolai rushes over to grapple the nearest visible enemy.

The enemy act...

AE2 is still stuck.

AE4 cuts back through the party. (Pompous, Anna, Trayvin, Sigvar and Michael to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=19pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. It can hold 2 medium creatures).

UN1 attacks the grappled Nikolai (Hit FlatAC32. Nikolai takes 11pts damage + 5pts sneak attack)

UN4 is grappled, but is able to lash out at Nikolai as well but is hopeless in it's attempt (Miss AC18 and AC18. 2 Nat 1s!)

UN5 does a flyby of Sigvar (Hit FlatAC40. Sigvar takes 10pts damage + 8pts sneak attack)

UN6 moves in closer for a kill. It can't get to Tinker or the griffons this round.

UN7 does a flyby on Anna, but isn't able to land the blow (Miss FlatAC24)

UN8 buzzes Michael but also misses. (Miss AC29)

Tinker makes a few observations. Their only means of a ranged attack seems to be their wind blasts. When the wind wall was up their only way to hit the party was from above. It sounds like the wind wall prevented that type of attack. They also haven't been using those wind blasts all the time. Surely it would be better to attack from range than to be up close to the party? Why not use them all the time? Best he can tell is that there must be some sort of recharge time. If they're immune to crits and flanking then chances are they could be elementals of some type as well. They might not have been able to even pass through the wind wall and saw it as a barrier. They did attack from above - over the wall - when first encountered. They've faced a few different skills and spells and Tinker hasn't noticed them as having any particular 'weakness' nor any sort of 'resistance', though Sigvar's horn didn't seem to be of much use.

Anna awkwardly angles her breathe weapon skyward at an angle. (OOC: believe since 7,8 and elemental 4 are all in range and 10 feet up, Anna could aim her breathe weapon in such a way that it misses her allies on the ground and hits the 3 of them, if this is not the case please change this to a readied action against a flyer that is aimed in such a way to miss aliies.

7, 8 and elemental 4 or whoever have to make a DC 25 reflex save or take 46 cold damage; success means only 23 cold damage. Anna can use her breathe weapon again in 1 round.

Sigvar goes with the flow, allowing the elemental to pick him up and then hacking into it from the inside.

Tinker starts attacking anything in reach. He does well.

Pru agrees that a strategic retreat is in order. She conjures up the mansion and invites everyone - including the griffons - inside the extradimensional space.

Michael gracefully floats down to the ground before trying to get the attention of any enemy who will listen.

Pompous turns to attack the nearest invisible thing. 3 arrows hit however 2 sail wide (Miss chance: 61, 66, 88, 46, 12)

Anna is able to angle her breath upwards enough to catch UN1 and UN7. The elemental is just outside her 50ft range. One dodges some of the blast. (Ref Saves: 28, 22)

Nikolai keeps his grapple on the thing and tries to work out what it is by touch. Well, it feels solid (otherwise he couldn't grapple it) and cold. It doesn't have fur or scales or skin or anything like that. It feels sort-of humanoid and probably lighter than it should be. He moves it into the mansion.

Ceres and Hemera quickly follows.

The enemy act...

AE2 is still stuck in the maze. It's taking a long time to get out!

AE4 - with Sigvar aboard - runs north, taking him far away from the battle before unceremoniously dumping him 400ft away.

UN1 flies in to attack Trayvin but misses! (Miss FlatAC31)

UN4 flails against Nikolai (Hit AC37. Nat20. Crit not successful on AC22. Miss AC27. Nikolai takes 16pts damage!)

With no griffons about the rest turn to the party...

Michael gets his wish as UN5 does a fly-by. If he wasn't being defensive about it he would have been hit! (Miss AC33!)

UN6 attacks Pru and grabs on to her tightly! (Hit AC33. Pru takes 16pts damage. CMB:37. Pru is grappled!)

UN7 flies towards where the griffons went but is unable to get through the portal. (Hit AC28. Pru takes 12pts damage)

Trayvin is nearest UN8 and it swoops down to attack him, missing in its attempt. (Miss AC32)

Pru remains firmly held by the invisible creature.

Ceres takes the opportunity to attack the creature with all he has, but his bite and talons fail to leave a mark.

UN5 flies in to get close to Pompous. It catches the archer by suprise. (Hit AC37. Miss change:92. Pompous takes 10pts damage + 6pts sneak damage. Grab CMB:35. Pompous is grappled!)

UN6 releases it's grapple on Pru and tries to turn the tables on the dwarf that is currently attacking it! (Free action to release Pru. CMB to Grapple Tinker: 35=Fail!)

OOC: on further review, if Nikolai's first Maintain Pin does not work, he can't attack so the Improved Vital Strike would be on his second Maintain Pin since that's when he can attack, so apply only the 28 dmg.

If he does get the Maintain Pin on his first Move, then nothing changes. Damage = 43 or 45.

Tinker manages to keep hold of his opponent and keep it off Pru. He fails to hurt it, but at least it isn't hurting anyone else. Tinker keeps his eyes open and ears alert, but he doesn't see anything else nearby - friend or foe. He does make the observation that the invisible things have avoided attacking (where possible) anything bigger than they are.

Sigvar keeps moving back towards the party, empowering his sword as he does.

Pru is free of the grapple and unleashes a cone of cold. UN1 fizzles away into nothing, but UN8 avoids most of the damage (UN1 was dead regardless. Ref Save for UN8:27)

Trayvin's elemental friend finally gets to double slam something, though this time only one blow lands. Trayvin takes the opportunity to attack one of the other invisible things.

Pompous is well and truly stuck in the grip of her attacker.

Michael was all set to unleash on the attacker in front of him but darnit, Pru already obliterated it! He's instead able to move and flank with Tinker. He gets one attack in against his grappled target. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Note that these things can't be flanked, so no flanking bonus or damage})

Anna then goes to bite UN1, but like Michael, she faces the disappointed in knowing that Pru got to it first. Anna instead switches target to the other one in reach.

Nikolai keeps his target firmly pinned and punches it a couple of times to reinforce the point. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Outside conditions don't affect what's going on inside the mansion so I don't think the prayer spell passes through. If it passed through then so would the area of a fireball I think >:) })

Ceres manages to hook some rope from Nikolai's backpack around a talon.

Hemera fails to stabilize and is NOT looking good

The enemy act...

After 10 rounds of being stuck, AE2 finally makes its way out of the maze. (d20=20)

UN4 is well and truly stuck in Nikolai's grasp.

UN5 maintains a tight hold of Pompous and starts crushing him (CMB:33. Pompous takes 12pts damage + 14pts constrict damage)

UN6 struggles against Tinker but fails to reverse the grapple (CMB: 36)

UN7 sees that the nearest 'non-big' thing to it is Tinker. It attacks him. It manages to hit him once but fails to grapple him (Miss AC35. Hit AC38. Tinker takes 14pts damage. CMB26 misses)

UN8 is almost out of the game, but that's not going to stop it! It attacks Trayvin but misses on both attempts (Miss AC36 and AC33)

Nikolai thanks Ceres for the rope and is amazed at the griffon's agility, he having forgotten that griffons don't have hands and fingers.

If Nikolai manages to get the thing tied up his next move will be to toss him in a room and close the door.
If this Maintain Pin was not enough:

Move 2: Maintain Pin (if necessary) and tie up
CMB 24 + 5 (grappled bonus) + d20 + 4 (Greater Grapple) + 1 (ioun stone) = 36 vs UN4 CMD

However, if the first Maintain Pin works and the thing is tossed into the room, Nikolai spends a Hero point and activates his Brahmah's Tatto Stabilize on Hemera.

If the first Maintain Pin didn't work, then the second one won't either and he calls for First Aid for Hemera through the link.

Sigvar starts closing back to the battle. His sword is fully enchanted and ready to cut something to pieces.

Tinker holds the creature pinned, and in very unsportsmanlike behavior invites Michael to hurt it. Michael obliges by introducing him to the playbook (of pain).

Pru casts a chain lightning spell, but even though she has a pretty good idea (a very good idea) of where the invisible enemy are she still can't target them. The air elemental looked ready to dodge most of the blast, but Trayvin's prayer made it that much more difficult for it! It takes the full hit (Ref Save23 but -1 for Prayer=22)

Pompous is not happy. It's much easier to plug things from a distance, but these things can get up close quickly and are hard to see from far away. A frustrating combination for an archer. He escapes it's grasp and steps aside.

Trayvin kills off one invisible attacker. His elemental has less success, missing on both its attacks.

Once again Anna watches on as someone else in the party beats her to the punch. Perhaps she's a lucky charm? Everything she goes to attack gets instantly killed off! She moves further forward to attack the next nearest target (Highlight to display spoiler: {Moved you on the map so you could attack a new target. Hope that's ok}

Nikolai tries to tie up the creature however it keeps wriggling out of his grasp (Highlight to display spoiler: {"If you are grappling the target, you can attempt to tie him up in ropes, but doing so requires a combat maneuver check at a –10 penalty." With a -10 penalty Nikolai isn't able to tie it up}). He looks about for a room and laments that Pru conjured it as "one massive open room". He calls out to the rest of the party via the link for help, letting them know of Hemera's predicament.

Hemera again fails to stabilize. This might be it for her.

Ceres keeps attacking the thing but failing to make any damage.

The enemy act...

AE2 does what air elementals do: it turns into a whirlwind and cuts through the party. (Pru and Trayvin to make DC27 Ref Saves. Fail=20pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it. It can hold 2 medium creatures.).

UN4 remains pinned and unable to escape Nikolai's pin.

UN5 stays close to Pompous. It attacks him, and even though one attack gets close, it isn't close enough (Hit AC26, 38. Miss chance: 18)

UN6 doesn't try to escape from Tinker. It tries to attack him. One attack misses but the other hits him squarely in the chaw (Miss AC27. Hit AC41 (Nat20). Fail to confirm on 34-3=31. Tinker takes 10pts damage)

UN7 keeps up its attack on Tinker as well, hitting him in the back. (Miss AC27. Hit AC39. Tinker takes 19pts damage. CMB: 39. Tinker is grappled![/i])

I don't know, but I'm on it, Pru says. She can't target the invisible things, and she's not sure they're desperate enough for her to start tossing area spells where they will catch her companions. So, she might as well help.

She dives into the Mansion, hurries to Hemera's side, and removes her own Ring of Regeneration. If she can, she jams it somewhere onto one of Hemera's limbs and hopes it works. She has nothing else.

OOC: Michael is taking a Move to get in the mansion, a Move to get the potion, and a Standard to administer the potion. What I would like the DM to do is forgo Michael's action over Trayvin's, saving the potion.

As KCrs start pouring into the mansion to help, Nikolai sighs with relief. Michael, Pru, and Trayvin all come through the entrance. As Trayvin starts the healing incantations, Nikolai calls out to Michael 'Michael, get this rope and follow me outside to tie him up. He's about to let loose another burp of cold air and I don't want to be in here for that.'

Move 1: Maintain Pin and carry Sparkly outside

If that stupid attempt does not work (the die roller has been against me for several days now) Nikolai tries again to get him outside.

Sigvar is in disbelief. How did the invisie get in the mansion? He gets closer to the battle. He's still some 130ft away and 60ft off the ground (per the map).

There is a concerted effort to save Hemera. Pru, Michael and Trayvin all rush into the mansion. There is some thought as to how best render aid. Pru is ready to offer a ring, but those griffon claws are too darn big. Trayvin releases a healing channel. It stabilises Hemera however she remains unconscious. Things must have been bad for her.

Michael has a potion ready to go (Highlight to display spoiler: {Since someone posted a healing action after you I'll leave it with you if you want to use the potion or keep the hero point})

Tinker finds himself in all kind of knots, caught between two critters. (Highlight to display spoiler: {While grappled you can make a full attack with a light or one-handed weapon against any creature within your reach, including the creature that is grappling you. Stab away :)})

Pompous finishes off one of the creature Tinker released. (Pompous miss chances: 77,17,34,27,52)

Anna chomps away at another one.

Nikolai has had enough of this creature. Keeping it in the mansion is just a recipe for disaster if it keeps doing those air-burps. It takes him a try or two but he eventually drags it out the door.

The enemy act...

AE2 does a flyby on Nikolai and then drops out of whirlwind form. (Nikolai to make a DC27 Ref Save. Fail=22pts damage and make a 2nd DC27 save to avoid being picked up in the whirlwind and carried along with it then dropped from 60ft)

Assuming Nikolai didn't get taken away by the whirlwind, UN4 tries to turn the grapple on him but fails (Can only win on a Nat20. Rolled 19)

UN5 attacks Pompous, grabbing him as it does (Hit AC38, AC41. Crit not confirmed AC24. Miss chance: 51,57. Pompous takes 17pts + 16pts damage. CMB:33. Pompous is grappled)

UN7 keeps a hold of Tinker, squeezing him tightly. (CMB:40. Tinker is still grappled and takes 16pts damage + 16 pts from constriction)

Tinker, thankful Pompous took out one of his opponents, realizes something while wrestling with UN7. “These guys either have tails or are more like serpents than people!” And over the mental link. ”c’mon anyone, any planar knowledge on what these elementals might be??”

The dwarf sees that the invisies have a small advantage over him in wrestling, but he hasn’t showed all his cards yet. Surprisingly hard to hold of for such a burly dwarf, Tinker makes a lithe twist and disengages from UN7 while still keeping track of his opponent.

”C’mon, AirBud, make my day.”. He calls out its location to Pompous.

Tinker manages to break free from his grapple and implores anyone with knowledge of all things plane to try and think what they might be.

Pompous is also able to break his grapple and calls for some assistance.

Pru comes to the realization that these things are aerial servants. Well, they're most likely aerial servants. They're showing different tactics and abilities to most of the ones she's heard of, but her best guess is that's what they are. She sends a chain lightning at the elemental and the faerie-fired servant. They both dodge it a little. She follows up with a scorching ray on the other invisible thing.

Sigvar keeps closing in.

Trayvin heals Hemera some more, enough that she regains consciousness. He then heads outside to see what is going on. His elemental misses on both attacks.

Anna keeps attacking the nearest servant to her. Highlight to display spoiler: {DR10/Magic gives you a resistance to attacks that aren't magic. It doesn't make your attacks magical though.}

Michael goes to help Nikolai get the critter out of the mansion. It isn't tied up so he just helps wrestle it out the door.

Nikolai keeps his foe grappled and decides now is the time to put these things down. Highlight to display spoiler: {Pretty sure Vital Strike requires a separate action to perform and can't be done as part of the damage while maintaining a grapple. It would be move action to maintain grapple+damage, then standard action to Vital strike and would require an attack roll. But yes, you can vital strike in the same round IMHO}

The enemy act...

AE2 is out of whirlwind form. It steps closer to Pru and pummels her with its windy fists. (Power Attack hits AC32 and AC37. Pru takes 31pts + 28pts damage!)

UN4 can't break out of the grapple but it has been ejected from the mansion just in time. It releases a wind blast at Nikolai. (Nikolai to make a Ref Save vs DC22. Pass=22pts damage. Fail=45pts damage and blown 5ft east).

Sigvar is now so close to the action that he is once again a threat to anything that wanders too close to him.

Tinker reverses the grapple AGAIN. It's a wrestling match and right now there's no clear winner.

Pompous also breaks his grapple. He's had enough of this. It's time to get down to business. He draws Shadow's Cry and prepares to defeat them with Tinder (which the DM assumes is an unfortunate typo).

Nikolai and Michael team up against the faerie fired foe. Under their combined assault it never had a chance and is quickly killed off.

Anna finishes off the one that had been giving Pompous a hard time.

Pru casts a spell at the remaining elemental. It dodges most of the blast. She ducks back into the safety of mansion.

Trayvin moves up to cover Pru's retreat as his elemental works on the remaining servant.

The enemy act...

AE2 knows that the battle is lost. It delivers a flyby attack to Nikolai as it departs (Hit AC35. Nikolai takes 14pts damage)

UN7 is pretty well stuck but doesn't know the meaning of the word quit. It unleashes a wind blast that catches Tinker and Trayvin (Tinker and Trayvin to make a Ref Save vs DC22. Pass=17pts damage. Fail=34pts damage and blown 5ft east).

You get a good sense that the battle is pretty much over. All that's left now is bragging rights on the last kill.

Between the three of them, Anna, Sigvar and Pompous put down the last servant with minimal effort. Tinker finds himself grappling a dead body and gives it a few twists to make sure.

Michael considers taking prisoners but the thing is already very, very dead. Nikolai admires the handiwork.

Trayvin's elemental goes off in pursuit of the other one. Does he want to give it a limit as to how far it should travel? The hostile elemental continues running off into the distance.

Despite bleeding profusely, Pru advises the griffons that the party have things well it hand. This is just another day at the office.

All that's left now is to patch everyone up and reflect on what just happened. Tinker is concerned about the fact that aerial servants are often used as assassins. Who would send them against the griffons, and why? There's probably a few things on that short list right now.

It's a little after 3pm and the party are around 6miles from the base of the mountain.

Still in decent shape, Sigvar starts asking questions to decide how to proceed. He is upset that they nearly killed their employers by trying to take a prisoner, especially one that very likely would not have talked, but everyone lived so lesson learned.
" Prudence, can you cast another mansion today? You were casting chain lightning like candy and , well that's alot of spells."
"Trayvin, please get everyone inside and healed up, we need a moment to think and sort this out."
" In my opinion, those were not summons. For one I have never seen a summon run or fear for it's own welfare. Plus with their time spent here attacking and closing with us I think the caster would need to be very powerful to summon creatures like that. The were also very deftly picked to get around almost all of our fighting techniques. Not evil, DR we couldn't defeat leaving us at a disadvantage and having few ways to combat them."
"To date we have only fought one other being that was so prepared for us we looked like rank amatures and oddly that foe got away. He would be reformed by now, how long has this cold snap been going on? We need to ask the griffons."

The dwarf’s mind is very much running the same as the Paladin: these had to have been called, not conjured. But then Sigvar says something strange. ”Eh, what’s that? An enemy at large who knows the Agents fighting styles?”

Tinker settles back into a bruised silence. That would be another bit of information that he’s asked about and never gotten. A grim and determined set of his mouth makes it certain he will find out.

'Good point Sigvar. If they had been summoned, the summoner would have had to stay close, just like Trayvin, to maintain control and contact with those elementals. So whoever it is, has access to their Plane, a two-way gate of some sort, and has made a bargain with them.
On the matter of why the Griffons, well, in my wild guess, they would have been sent to attack whomever the employer turned out to be, either Griffons, Birdmen, or Giants.

Since Pru can cast more mansion spells, I suggest get as close to the mountain as possible before dark and spend the night in another, more suitable, mansion. This One-Room-for-All is good for a rest stop, but not an overnighter'

DM RobC - "I could cast....let me see....seven more Mansions today"

Trayvin watches as the elemental flies off into the distance - straight towards the mountain.

There is some thinking that these elementals weren't summoned but were brought to this plane somehow. It's a good theory. Certainly the evidence supports it.

There is also the threat that these enemies were specifically sent to exploit any potential weakness the party might have or to minimise their effectiveness. Could that be the case? Is there something bigger going on here?

The party dwell on those points, each throwing out some thoughts and possibilities.

The decision looks to be to heal up here first, travel the rest of the way before nightfall, and then create a more comfortable mansion at the base of the mountain.

Trayvin starts by channeling some healing energy. It's enough to cure some of the minor and even moderate wounds. Some of the severely injured still show signs of battle however.

Hemera is fully healed now. "I've never seen their like before" she says as she gets to her feet. Ceres snorts. He still has a few feathers out of place. "It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Hawkmen had a hand in this."

The party agree that it's best to get moving while there is still some daylight. The group isn't completely healed but they're fit enough to travel.

Tinker searches the bodies of the dead elemental and servants for any clues. His search comes up empty. No clues or treasure. Nothing that could indicate why they attacked the party or where they came from.

It's getting very late in the afternoon by the time the party reach the base of the mountain. As promised, the top of the mountain can't be seen. It extends well above the clouds. You can see the challenge that awaits. The gentle, grassy slope ahead quickly becomes rocky and steep. Even in good weather it's not going to be an easy climb so you can only imagine what awaits you on the upper slopes.

Ceres and Hemera look happy to be back. "It's not much further now". They do understand though that it would be reckless to rush ahead now when so many are still wounded so are ready to sleep in whatever mansion Pru constructs.

There's no immediate sign of trouble around you. Everything is quite peaceful right now.

All that being said, Nikolai can make out the shapes of two 'things' high above you flying close to the mountain. If he hadn't been looking so closely he may have missed them. They're just dark specks from here but they're there, whatever they are.

Fully healed, the paladin awaits the groups decision. He still has plenty of fight left in him.

Nikolai points out the two specks and asks Ceres and Hemera if the two specks could be griffons from their pride on the look-out.

With possible spies about, Nikolai suggests some camouflage tricks to hide the entrance. If there are any trees in these foothills, then the trees will conceal where they go in. If not, maybe some rock outcropping might conceal what they do.

DM RobC - "Are we going to see what they are or camp?"
Monday June 21st, 2021 3:47:49 AM

About 3hrs has passed since the encounter with the elementals.

While others are looking up, Tinker is looking 'less' up. He studies the base of the mountain and the surrounding rock. To his eyes it just isn't right. The rock is different to the rest of the area and in fact is different from any other type of rock that can be found within a thousand miles of here.

He does recall hearing a story from his mentor Unrak. Dwarfs do like stories about rocks, of course. The story goes that there are two theories for the origin of Shadow Mountain. The first is that the mountain was thrust upward from deep within Yrth itself. The second theory claims that the mountain came not from below, but from above. A moon or other celestial body fell from the sky and became the Shadow Mountain you see today. There's never been a definitive answer on the topic though, so it's all up for debate.

Pru creates two very comfortable mansions for the group to safely rest in.

Those two blips in the sky though cause some concern. Sigvar worries that if the party camp that those things could prepare an ambush. Trayvin considers someone scouting and Nikolai want to cover the entrances 'just in case'. There are plenty of places around where the mansion could be cast to give it a little concealment. Michael tucks in to a chicken dinner. It was a tough fight and a long day and nothing feels better than a full stomach right now.

Anna can't make out what those things are from this distance just yet. Nikolai points them out to Ceres and Hemera. They each look where Nikolai pointed and have a good squint. "Yes, most likely some of our scouts. They may have seen us coming."

The dots in the distance grow larger as whatever they are clearly approach. It soon becomes quite clear that they are, in fact, two griffons. They keep their distance though and start circling the party from high in the air.

Ceres looks back to Nikolai. "They might be unsure if we are with you voluntarily or if we are your captives. Wait here." Ceres spreads his wings and jumps into the air, flying towards the scouts. Hemera stays with the party and watches on. She doesn't look concerned at all. "I expect they've been watching each day for our return."

Tinker again relays his findings on the mountain to the other KCs. Maybe nothing, maybe something, just in case.

The dwarf takes his cue from Hermera, not concerned at all with Ceres going it alone to the Griffon scouts. After all, if the KCs start pulling Missle weapons or casting spells it may be seen as a hostile act!

She hopes the scouts are satisfied that all is well.

Michael stands in awe of the Gryphons. He's been enthralled by them since that day. He turns to Hemera.

Dame Hemera, how would be the best way for me to introduce myself to your pride? do I approach slowly? let them smell me? would an offer to scratch their necks and any hard-to-reach places be in order or would that be too forward of me? .

he looks thoughtful for a moment
I want to become a friend to your pride, any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Nikolai figures that Ceres and Hemera's eyesight is better than his, so when they say that the specs are griffon scouts, he accepts it and hopes that it is not something else in disguise.

He picks a nice spot for Pru to anchor the two Mansions and points them out to her.

"These spots are well sheltered so no one spying from above or from a distance will know why we suddenly have vanished and have no idea where the entrance is."

DM RobC - "Do I approach slowly? Let them smell me?"
Tuesday June 22nd, 2021 3:19:24 AM

"You are outsiders and will likely be viewed as such. You won't be in any danger however it would be best not to approach anyone without Ceres or myself being there. At least initially." Hemera responds to Michael and then adds "and it would be best not to make any requests or offers to touch anyone."

Sigvar wants to stay close to Ceres and flies up with him. The scouts notice the taur approaching and one breaks away to dive and give Sigvar a very close fly-by. It wasn't an attack but the message was clear: keep your distance. Sigvar manages to stay about 60ft safely from Ceres but obviously has their attention.

Pompous, Pru and Trayvin watch from the ground. Anna laments not being able to join the griffons in the air. Given Sigvar's reception it might be fortunate she couldn't.

There is no sign of any trouble as Ceres speaks with the griffon scouts. They look comparable in size to him, indicating they are both male. Whatever they are talking about doesn't last long. The two scouts start the trip back up the mountain and Ceres descends back to the ground. You haven't known him very long, but you can tell that he's concerned.

"Things are getting bad. Another pair left this morning." He looks to Hemera "Eurus and Naggina". Hemera shakes her head.

Ceres looks back to the party. "I've told them that we will be resting here the night. In the morning they will send four down to meet us. We'll carry you the rest of the way. It would take too long for you to climb." It isn't said or intended as an insult. More a statement of fact.
