Scene 3: Wedding City

DM RobC - "Chocolate! Here we come!"
Thursday August 6th, 2020 7:32:58 AM

A few of the pearls are shared and claimed. The others tucked away in a backpack somewhere. Probably best not to lose it.

The journey to the city is uneventful. Sure, you pass a few travelers on the road but nothing sinister. Just nods of acknowledgement that passing strangers make to each other.

Following the road leads the party right into the eastern district of Wedding City: "East Town".

East Town. The newest and largest section of the city. This is really the section that’s developed in response to the idea of the city being a destination for weddings.

There are all of the normal shops and places in this district, including plenty of residences, but the vast majority of them really support the wedding industry.

The busy main street through the town is lined with stores and hawkers to try and entice people in to join them.

Every major religion is represented here and plenty of minor and completely random religions that may or may not have been invented just to fleece the unwary. There are small and medium temples and places of worship in this section for every religion known in the Wold.

Most of the buildings here are newer. Those that are on the main road into town all look very new and are often kept painted and cleaned up to attract the tourists. The further from the main street one goes, the more the places look like a normal town and less of a fantasy/tourist version of a town.

Highlight to display spoiler: {I'm not exactly how much time the game has spent in Wedding City so please forgive me if the details don't match up}

Sigvar tries to look at his horns, but the angle just isn't there. He sighs and just pops a green pearl into the air over his head. He isn't sure what unarmed attack Michael will use the tear on, but just ambles down the path behind the others

Sigvar looks around at the various temples. He frowns when he sees the ones to the dubious deities, but since he is not exactly an authority he says nothing. He looks toward the area where the docks should be as they traverse this part of the city and an idea strikes him.
" Trayvin, Prudence, can either of you cast a spell to locate an object, specifically the Knight Captain's rank bars? If we are going to go sailing and go looking for her out under the sea maybe we need some help finding her. Also maybe we should try a sending spell to see if she can tell us where she is, maybe whatever has convinced her to go with the dragon doesn't restrict her from talking about it."
He stops, then considers the other thing that has been on his mind. It struck him when Anna was transformed into the plant creature when they fought the sirens. " Have we considered that this dragon we are chasing might not be a dragon? Anna can assume dragon form, and the 'dragon' we have faced continues to get bigger and stronger each time we face it. Perhaps it is a spellcaster assuming dragon form when it encounters us."

Pru is bewildered at the wide variety of "churches" available. Who is "Elvis," and why does he have his own church?

"Sorry; I don't have much in the way of Divination spells," she tells Sigvar. "All the really good ones are priest spells, anyway. I do have a couple of scrolls of Sending; would you like me to use one to ask the Captain where she is?"

If the group agrees, Pru uses one of her scrolls to send the following: Captain Palance, Sergeant Gundle here. We're in Wedding City looking for you. Do you know where you are? Or how we could find you?

Anna accepts the gold tear. As a Deinonychus at will she has 5 natural attacks so she can comfortably equip the 3 tears she owns.

She currently has: 1 holy tear, 1 dragon bane tear, 1 shocking holy dragon bane tear equipped

Anna says to Sigvar, "That is an excellent point. My own dragon form taking abilities have matured considerably. When I first figured out how to become a dragon I could only become a medium silver dragon, then I figured out how to become medium or large and now I know how to be medium, large or huge. As far as I can tell though shape changing into dragons is capped at size huge have we determined the size of the dragon that abducted the commander?"

She tells Pru as she casts her spell, "Good thinking."

Anna also takes in the buildings and wonders just what sort of deity Banjo the Clown is

"Ok, Fist. Do we find a nice fancy touristy inn or go for the more nostalgic older inn? Michael, you want to do a little information gathering and see which inn would fit us best? A place that handles the more common traveler might be the ticket."

Sigvar takes advantage of a green pearl, and pops it into place over his head. He asks the others about potential spells that could be used to help find the Commander and the .. dragon? Hey, was it a real dragon after all? It's a question that has suddenly occured to him. Anna concurs that it's a distinct possibility if the person was powerful enough (OOC: I'm assuming that Anna is walking the strets in human form, and not scary dinosaur form.)

They urge Pru to cast the Sending spell.

The party move to the edge of the busy road to begin the process. It takes ten long minutes for the spell to be cast, and you do draw the attention of people near to you. A group of obviously powerful, well-armed people casting a spell in the middle of a crowd? Yeah... those nearby start to look a little afraid and give you a wide berth. There's even a little pushing to get clear of you. By the time the spell is finished there is noone within 20ft of you, and those closest to you look uncomfortable.

Pru finally gets to send her message. There is a delay, but she does get a response back: "Gundle. Gundle. I know a Gundle. Good soldier. They all are. Palance. That's me isn't it? Not sure. So confused"

Trayvin is happy to prepare more of the sending spells if they will help. Maybe they will? He also makes a very valid point: if a dragon flew this way someone surely saw it, right?

The party continue on and admire the many different temples of the city. With the place so popular a destination it's no wonder there are so many.

Michael gives the Temple of Warrd a good look over. It's bigger than many he has seen. The doors are open and he can see groups of people inside talking with clerics in green robes. Standing outside the temple are two men that look a little down on their luck. Their clothes are a little soiled and not in great shape, they obviously haven't shaved in a while, and you'd be right if you thought they had a bad odour to them. By the way they are swaying the inn might have gotten the better of them last night. Michael manages to overhear their conversation as he passes "Don't drink the Red Ale from the Cornish Hen Tavern. Old lady Miller drank so much one night she turned into a weasel. Yes, a weasel! No. I'm not drunk man. I'm telling ya the truth." When he notices Michael looking he stops talking, and turns away.

Nikolai starts coming up with some possible places the party might learn things. There are certainly inns to choose from. Finding a room in one might be a challenge though.

"Oh! Would you just look at you two?!" A rather round man in a very gaudy red and gold outfit approaches the party. His smile is very wide, and his arms spread even wider "Such a lovely couple" He moves in quickly and reaches to take a hand from Pru and Trayvin. "You could not have chosen a better place to come to celebrate your nuptials. May Serenbeth bless your union with many children! Come. Let Sumidi show you a range of options available to mark this occasion as the beginning of your beautiful new journey together" He gestures towards a nearby market stall of silverware.

(OOC: Anna was getting beast shape I as her daily unlimited SLA so she is either walking around Wedding City as a Green Woman with Red Grass hair or she borrowed Nikolai's hat of disguise in which case she looks human.)

Anna hears about how interesting the temple of Warrd is herself and decides to wander down there herself. If she hears the 2 men talking about how someone drank so much they turned into a weasel she tells them, "You mean like this?" and she uses her Beast Shape 1 to take the form of a dire weasel (reskinned badger) before returning to her original form.

She then regroups with her squad and says, "Do you think the commander could be struck by a spell? Aren't there spells out there that reduce your mental capacity? (Know:Arcana) Wouldn't that lend creedence to your theory that she isn't being abducted by a dragon but an actual caster?"

THIS must be the gentleman who has captured your heart" He turns from Trayvin to look at Sigvar "Such a strong and powerful man too. Please, allow me to offer you a discount for my mistake, sir. Just for you I will give a 10, no, 20 percent discount off my prices!"

Sense Motive vs DC16: Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the feeling this is a very well rehearsed routine. No malice or foul intentions mind you. Just a salesman trying to bring in business in a competitive environment}

Nikolai keeps with the wedding angle, inquiring on where they might stay the night. "A nuptial suite? Wonderful! Why, there would be no better than the Blushing Queen! Delicious food, exquisitely decorated, and they are very discreet. It's just down the way there, and turn left. Be sure and tell them that Sumidi sent you and they'll take very good care of you. If you are interested in flowers or perhaps some tailored clothes, I would be glad to be of service. I could have them sent straight to you there if you desire?"

Anna decides to cause a little mischief by scaring the two poor guys standing harmlessly outside the front of the temple. Their jaws drop and they back away until their backs are right at the wall of the temple, clearly scared. As if life wasn't tough for them already. Meanie.

If there is good news it's that Captain Palance is alive. Anna knows that there are plenty of spells that can affect a persons mind and the way they think. Does that mean Palance was captured by a caster rather than a dragon?

Michael leaves the party to scout around a little. He is gone for around 30mins before returning to the party.

He didn't need to look far for an inn. There are plenty to choose from. It's harder to find one that isn't nice in this part of town! Some advertise that there are no rooms available though the tavern areas are all open for food and drink. Others advertise specials, such as "Free ale for father of the bride". He asks any local guards he sees and they are happy to give him a few tips. He may play the part of the weary traveler but they recognise someone with money easily enough.

He gathers all the information and in terms of a place with a room, he narrows it down to three:
- The Bell and Bulette. This place is of comfortable quality. The kind of place a traveler might stay. Its main draw is their selection of wines imported from several far away places. There are currently 2 rooms available.
- The Sultry Sanctuary. An inn of modest quality. Good for the average person looking to have a special time. It's known for the varied cuisine prepared by a talented chef. There are currently 3 rooms available. 1 is a suite.
- The Gilded Glass Inn. This inn is for those with gold to spend. It's always a comfortable temperature inside no matter what the weather is like outside. If you are looking for delicacy then this is the place for you. There are currently 4 rooms available

All of them meet the other basic criteria he had, though none have any patio lanterns (sorry Pompous). All have the option of candles on the tables though if you're looking for mood lighting.

He does find out a little more about the Blushing Queen: it is tailored for romance and couples. Meals for two, live music, flowers and chocolates sent straight to the room, dedicated room attendants, etc. It has a very good reputation and it's owned by someone named Sumidi.

Pru isn't any more enamored of the situation than Sigvar is. She cannot fathom why anyone would travel to a strange city, away from friends and family, to get married. She thought of weddings she'd attended back home, with Brother Talford beaming as he performed the ceremony, and Dalia Sharpe singing a lovely solo hymn. Then would come the reception, with Granny Teabury's chicken salad, and Farmer Ryman's special wine, and a wedding-cake lovingly decorated by the Croft sisters. How could Wedding City possibly compare to friends and neighbors gathering to celebrate?

Pru puts those thoughts aside, and drags herself back to the present. "I can cast a Magnificent Mansion inside an inn room," she reminds her friends. "Though it might look odd, one room for all of us. Let's concentrate on taverns for the moment, and see if we can find anyone who's seen a dragon."

Michael makes his way back to the party and gives them the room keys. he then wanders over to the Temple of Wardd. and goes in. He wanders the place for a while. listening to the folk talk, keying on the mention of a dragon or other interesting tidbits. he finds the head cleric and asks where the basement is? he says he has a donation for it. and shows him is old Rapier +1 keen.

DM RobC - "Let's make sure we don't leave the wrong impression."

The party have lost interest in the 'bargains' on offer in the market stalls and have no wish to keep discussing things with Sumidi. He doesn't seem too sad about it though as he leaves you to approach another unsuspecting nearby group "Oh! Would you just look at you two?! ... "

Pompous doesn't mind shelling out a couple of extra gold for somewhere nice, but Michael has already booked and paid for a room at the Sultry Sanctuary. Michael, in fact, has his whole day planned out! (...but we'll be pacing that to fit in with the rest of the party)

The party decide to go with the plan of casting another Magnificent Mansion regardless of the room they book at an inn.

The Sultry Sanctuary is a pretty nice place. The kind of inn that you might spend a night away with your significant other.

There are about ten other patrons in the tavern area of the establishment. They're sitting in small groups, sharing meals, drinks and laughs. It's only a little after noon so the lunch crowd is probably still on the way.

The place is known for its cuisine and Michael places an order to let them serve whatever is good. The bartender is a quite attractive young-looking female dwarf. She has shiny blonde hair, kept in a top-knot style. Physically, she looks like she'd be strong enough to take on unruly customers. She smiles to Michael and gives a nod, knowing full well that they will be in for a treat.

He excuses himself and heads back to the temple of Warrd

---------------------
The rest of the party...

The party (sans Michael) arrive and are able to find a table big enough and await the meal. It does take a little longer than you would normally expect for meals to be served, but when they finally arrive you can understand the delay.

An older male dwarf arrives at the table and carefully places three plates in the middle of the table. He heads back to the kitchen area, then returns with three more. All are placed in the center of the table for the party to choose from.

"Ladies. Sirs." he gestures to each plate in turn "Blackened chunks of veal with a ginger marinade served over rice and artichoke. Braised duck in a thick gravy served with noodles and a side of red peppers. A scallop chowder with assorted grains, mushrooms, garlic, and turnips. Herb-crusted venison in garlic sauce on a bed of noodles and a helping of caramelized onions. Leaves of red lettuce coated in a balsamic dressing and tossed with baby artichokes. Rotisserie-cooked fish in a thick sauce served over mashed potatoes and a helping of celery."

"Would you like any drinks with your meals?"

---------------------
Michael...

Michael heads back to the Temple of Wardd. The same two men are still standing outside. They watch Michael very carefully, still unsettled by the person who changed shape in front of them not long ago.

Inside it is quite busy. Priests in green clothes are scattered about the room and are speaking to small groups and pairs of people. It's unusual to see priests of Wardd wear matching outfits but they probably have their reasons.

He slowly walks the perimeter of the room. The conversations that he overhears are all very similar: people looking for a little luck for their 'special day', for their lives together, for their children, and so forth. In almost all cases he observes people handing items over to the priests as offerings. "My grandmother wore this locket every day and lived to be 202!" (that from an elf woman), "I found this single pearl on the sand and the next day I met my wife", "This arrow was shot straight at my head! My brother got in the way and was killed, but how lucky was I that I lived!", and so on.

Nikolai practices his dwarven with the serving dwarven lady. He's a bit rusty as he's had very few occasions to use the language since the early days in the Fist.
in dwarven "Good afternoon Miss. How are you stocked up on dwarven ale? I know it is early for such a strong drink, but we've had a mess of a time getting here I'd like a mug of your best dwarven ale you got in stock. I bet your customers don't have half the problems getting to Wedding City that we've had, hah!"

DM RobC - "Has anyone mentioned seeing a dragon in the last few days?"
Wednesday August 12th, 2020 3:55:34 AM

Michael returns from the Temple of Wardd with a few interesting tidbits of information. Apparently the temple of Kevintar has seen a tenfold increase in business since his return to the Wold. People no longer feel the need to hide their devotion to him.

The dwarven bartender smiles on seeing his return, and at his request for food, puts through an order for the scallop chowder. She heads into the kitchen and returns with a steaming bowl of chowder and two thick chunks of crusty bread to help mop it up with.

Michael's attempt to chat her up and get her to talk about herself is met with mixed results. An attractive female barmaid in a place called Wedding City? Yeah, she's heard it all before. She doesn't really get into talking about herself and the open-ended questions are tactfully avoided. She's professional enough though to answer his question about a dragon. "Yeah, a few people say they saw a big one flying around nearby a week or so ago. Why do you ask?"

There is a break in the conversation as Nikolai joins them for a drink and a chat.

"Best dwarven ale it is" The bartender takes a pewter tankard from behind the counter and fills it from a nearby cask. She places it on the counter in front of Nikolai, but before he can take it she proceeds to drop a small rock into it! "This stout is Mountain's Bounty. Volcanic rocks from the Scab give it a true mining flavor. Don't worry. We clean them in between drinks"

"So..." she seems a little more comfortable now and speaks to both Michael and Nikolai ".. what problems did you have getting here, and why the interest in dragons?"

---------

Anna and Pru strike up a conversation with a nearby half-orc couple enjoying a lunch away from the kids. They've finished their meals and are relaxing with some glasses of red wine. They're happy to have a chat with the friendly pair "We try and have some time to ourselves once a month and love the food here" the woman explains "They do an AMAZING slow cooked roast beef here. I'm not sure what ingredients they use, but they must be hard to get. They only make it once a month. You just need to be lucky enough to be here on the day."

"You remember the last time we ate it?" The man smiles and Anna notices the woman blush a little.

The server arrives with a mug of very sweet mead for Pru.

Talk shifts from the food, to the establishment ("I don't think anyone knows when it was built. The staff are so lovely here"), to the town ("Such a wonderful and happy place. We've lived here all our lives"), and then on to any local excitement. Pru nudges the topic of dragons.

The woman places her hand on Pru's "You know, I heard that a green dragon was sighted last week flying just off the coast! Can you believe it? An actual giant dragon here?"

She seems excited by the idea.

---------

Sigvar turns to the table behind the party. It's a group of three young men - a dwarf, an elf and a half-elf - who look like they're enjoying a 'liquid lunch'. They're already starting to collect a few empty mugs on the table. They're in good spirits, telling stories and laughing, having a good time but not disturbing anyone. When they see Sigvar looking at them they give a good spirited "Hey! Join us!" Best Sigvar can tell is that these three are catching up and reminiscing about their childhoods. Some of the stories are really funny and no doubt exaggerated to make them so. He waits for the right time to jump into the conversation and then brings up the topics of dragons and one that might have been seen nearby.

The elf's eyes goes wide. "Dragon? Wow. Sounds like you might want to talk to Nooks"
The dwarf shakes his head and sighs "Nooks? Are you sure?"
The elf nods insistantly "Yeah! Nooks!" He looks to Sigvar and leans in a little closer "You want to go find ol' Nooks Juyoe. He's a secretive little halfling guy. He's always looking for investors to help fund his expeditions. I hear he's got an interest in dragons right now."
"Of course people that fund his ventures often don't see their money returned" The half-elf chimes in
The dwarf just sighs again.

But we need to know about where the dragon crossed over from land to sea, you see? Haha!" Doing his best to hold his liquor, Nikolai can't help himself with the pun. Michael and Nikolai get more direct with their questions and intentions. "VIP huh? Have to be pretty important for a dragon to take an interest in you I'd wager." she then looks to Nikolai and grins as he enjoys the ale.

"A lot of people around here look for omens and often in places there aren't any. To some a dragon sighting means that their children will be born strong, or that such a rare event means the marriage is blessed. It didn't hurt anyone after all. You don't need to tell me it's not that. Dragons mean trouble. That's all there is to it. Green ones I hear are some of the nastiest. Probably do a bit of damage if it wanted to."

"Good to know that some of the Fist are here looking into it. Who, ah, who's footing the bill? Paying for Fist mercs to be here, that is. That VIPs family got gold or something?"

She pauses and looks at the pair before continuing "Listen, I'm not sure if there's a finders fee or anything or if this even helps you or not, but the way I hear it there have been two sightings. First was a dragon flying along the coast, away from the city at night and into Fargunia. Not sure what color it was but given dragons aren't everyday occurrences here, chances are it's that green one you're after. Not many people saw or heard about that one. The next day was when one was spotted flying back this way. That's the one people have been gossiping about."

The girl starts lining up a few mugs on the counter in anticipation of lunch time business.

"You seem like nice guys. I'll ask some of the regulars to see what they know. See if I can find out any more for you. You're staying here, right?"

-----------

Pru passes the mead along to Anna after the careless waiter delivered it to the wrong person.

Anna tries to get a little more information about the dragon that was sighted "Well, ah, I don't know. I didn't see it. I heard about it from my friend Haldir, who heard from Mr Torqen, that... " The story goes on for a couple more people. In the end Anna is able to piece together that the dragon was somewhere between gargantuan and super-colossal (bigger than colossal: 40x40) and may depend on who you ask. People haven't seen a dragon around here before and the reports vary. It was also flying at the time and off the coast so they weren't close enough to gauge it other than to say 'really big'.

"What do you think?" The half-orc woman drinks from her wine and leans closer, clearly engaged "Is it dangerous?".

-----------

The elf winces and leans back a little in his chair "Ooh. Well. I'm trying to remember the last time I saw him. Sometimes my memory is that bad I can barely remember my own name" He eyes the empty mugs on the table and looks back to Sigvar. The party clearly stand out as wealthy. The standard ale in this place is pricier than some, but you pay for the atmosphere :) (1 pint = 2sp)

The dwarf doesn't want to be a part of this any more. He shakes his head and stands "I have to go. Good luck finding your dragon, friend"

The elf and half-elf bid him well and then focus back on Sigvar... and the empty mugs.

-----------

Pompous is ready to do some shopping. He's got a lot of gold in his pocket and wants to spend it. The others discuss keeping some of the treasure.

Trayvin is feeling good that the party have some leads. Whether any of them will be fruitful is a whole other question

"But, there are clauses for finder's fees. And considering the size of a dragon's hoard, that could be quite a sum. In any case, we gotta find it first. Michael stays hush about the contract but wants to try one of these dwarven stouts. The bartender is more than happy to oblige. She grabs another pewter tankard and repeats the pouring process, finishing with a rock in it and everything. She slides the drink over to Michael to see how he fares (OOC: Want to make a Con check? Nikolai rolled 11. Just a bit of fun to see who feels it more and who gets bragging rights). There isn't a lot of change from the 2gp, but what is left he leaves for the bartender as a good patron should. It's met with a polite nod from the dwarf.

Nikolai suggests that there is the potential for a finders fee - and a good one at that. "We tend to get a lot of patrons in the evening. I'll ask around to see what people know. Might have something for you tomorrow. The chef puts on a good breakfast. Why don't you stop by then?"

Pompous then hurtles himself at the duo with exciting news. Shopping time! He's in a rush to spend some gold. Not to worry though. The Catacombs doesn't have closing hours.

--------

Anna and Pru explain that dragons basically aren't very nice. The woman seems a little worried now. She sits back in her chair and places her hand on her husbands "Maybe it would be best we go check on the children? Perhaps take them camping for a while? I'm sure they'd like that"

The man smiles warmly back at her, clearly not as worried as she is "Alright. Let's go." They stand and excuse themselves "It was nice talking to you. Good luck, er, finding it." They head out of the tavern, hand in hand.

The potential size of the beast has Anna wondering. An illusion spell? A caster of immense power? A dragon type previously unheard of? So many possibilities.

It doesn't change the mission though. Palance has been taken by it and that makes it the target.

--------

Sigvar shows his appreciation for information by buying a couple of rounds for the table. 2 pieces of gold results in 10 mugs of ale. A drop in the ocean for Sigvar. "Wow! Wasn't expecting so much! One would have been plenty" The elf reaches for one of the mugs, but seeing so many on the table, reaches for a second as well.

"Nooks is a very secretive person. Your best would be to go hang around by the town gates around sunset" The elf says to Sigvar, mug in hand.
"Remember. Short little halfling guy" the half-elf adds "Can't miss him".

The pair are no doubt going to have a memorable afternoon.

Nikolai follows Pru. Maybe the folklore that a couple seeing a dragon before their wedding is a lucky thing might help pry some information that otherwise might be more difficult to get. He advises Pru of that idea, to pose as an engaged couple, Anna the chaperone, and see how that works.

He puts on his Hat of Disguise to hide the fact he's half elven and to look like a handsome male human of moderate means, and the physique of a dock worker, the hat being that of a sailor.

DM RobC - "Let's find another tavern to ask questions at"
Tuesday August 18th, 2020 6:26:16 AM

The party split three ways again. It's getting to the later part of the afternoon now. The sun won't be in the sky much longer

-------------
Pru, Nikolai and Anna head out to look for a working class tavern. There aren't any on the main road, but it's easy enough to find one off the path: The Boot and Badger. A tavern for the people if ever there was one. The ale is cheap (and probably watered down) and the atmosphere loud. The language from some of the nearby tables can be described as 'colorful' at best.

Pru and Anna find two men who are more than happy to have a couple of women join them. They sit up straight and everything. The conversation starts normally enough as the men discuss the developments in the town

"Can you believe it? Another three temples have just been built. Surely that's enough for the town"
"Get out. There's four new ones. There's a new one for Gargul. That other temple has seen better days so no wonder they need another. There's a new one for Maab too. No idea why they need a fourth one. It's massive too! I thought those people liked the outdoors. Then there's that one for Serenbeth. I'm kind of glad about that. It'd be good for families I think. There's that new one just down the way too. Some god I've never heard of. Scald? Is that it?"
"I dunno. Temple for Domi is all I need" He nods and flexes his bicep (what little there is of it).

Pru then subtly turns the talk towards dragons. "Hey, I heard one was seen not far from here. Just off the coast. A real big m.. dragon" He catches his tongue before using any unsavory language in front of the ladies.
"Yeah, great big green one I heard." The other one join in. He starts shuffling his seat a little closer to Anna "Of course, it's lucky it didn't land. I'm pretty handy with a sword, you see. It'd be another nice trophy to mount on the wall at my house". He's close enough that you can smell his breath. It's one of those smells that is so strong you can taste it.

Nikolai finds a man who smells of the sea. You know, salt water and 'fishy'. He's happy to have a chat, though it doesn't look like he'll be buying any rounds. Where others are drinking large pints, he only has a small mug. He's happy to have a chat though, and starts talking about his latest catches and the one-that-got-away. At the topic of dragons he just shakes his head. "I missed all the excitement. Me and the boys were out fishing. Didn't see a thing. We were only a few miles off the coast too"

-------------
Trayvin heads to the temple of Ffloy. The inside is set up with a series of small tables, to which he is waved over to by one of the priests. The priest is ready to start talking to him about his finances "Now tell me, have you made sure you have invested wisely? Not all of the businesses here will be profitable", though Trayvin turns the talk back to general topics about the town.

The cleric is more than happy to talk with a fellow follower "Trade in the town has been very good lately. Though we're told by reliable sources that the best spots on the main road for vendors are obtained by paying bribes to city officials. Not sure if there is anything we can really do about it. Taxes get paid and business thrives"

As for talk about a dragon, Trayvin isn't able to gather any new information. A dragon was sighted. Some people excited. Some people scared. No definitive location for it.

Sigvar goes out to try and find this Nooks fellow.

He positions himself near the gates per the directions of the young elf lad. There is a lot to see and distract him. Some of the traders are closing up their stalls and the crowds are thinning. There are still a few stalls open should anyone head out to the streets later looking for that last minute item. There are people still on the streets but no obvious halfling.

Outside the gates Sigvar can see a couple of guards on smoke break. They still have uniforms on but have obviously popped outside the gates for some peace and quiet.

One of them notices the taur standing there and gives a nod. He whispers something quietly and the other guard turns to have a quick look at Sigvar before looking back to his friend. They don't seem alarmed at all. Just two guys having a smoke. Whatever they're saying though, you can't hear it.

Sigvar continues to look for the halfling. Noticing the guards he steps over and greets them. He asks them about their day, comments on how calm and well mannered the citizenry is for such a large town ( He has worked crowd control before but this place seems well ordered for all the crazy goings on). He finally brings the topic around to dragons and asks if they have seen anything. He heard a rumor and wanted to look into it.

Nikolai notices the small mug. When he orders a large ale, he also orders one for the sailor.

"Her you go, have one on me. My crew and I fought some Seaweed Sirens and killed them. So I have a few extra coppers to spend. That's what we do. We travel the coastal areas looking for Sahuagin, Harpies, sea serpents, whatever plagues the sea lanes. For a fee of course. But all for the good of the trading companies and the safety of towns like this one, so near the coast.

That's why I asked about a dragon sighting. Dragons love treasure and ships carry all sorts of stuff so it would be just a matter of time that a dragon would start smacking his lips on such easy prey. However, if we could find where such a dragon is laird, we could put a stop to it before any lives are lost.

In your travels in these waters, do you have an idea of where such a dragon's lair could be? I heard it was a green dragon.

Mind you, anyone with valid information will get a good share of the hoard."

DM RobC - "I heard it was a green dragon"

The sun is starting to set...

---------------
Pru and Anna press the men for more information

"You want someone who saw it? Pfft. Easy, my brother Wes. Came running home so fast. Darn near wet himself he was that scared" He starts laughing like it's the funniest thing he's ever heard. Small drops of ale fly from his mouth and land on the table. "It's a dragon! IT'S A DRAGON! Those were his words. Ahh.. too funny". His laughs die down to chuckles. "By the time he calmed down we got more from him. He wasn't in any real danger. Just saw it flying down by the water's edge. He was so far away from it chances are it didn't even see him. He reckons it was at least... AT LEAST a 30 footer"

OOC: Do NPCs know the relative sizes?

---------------
Nikolai buys the man a drink to which the chap is very appreciative "Aw you didn't have to do that" He raises the mug with a 'cheers' and takes a sip "You took care of the sirens? That's fantastic! It's been years since we've been able to fish there. The things are.. should I say were.. so dangerous that it just wasn't safe. There's going to be plenty of fish on the table soon" He seems happier about the sirens being gone than he does the beer, and that's saying something!

Nikolai then starts talking more about the dragon

"You see. That's just the thing. I wasn't fishing too far from here at the time. People saw it, but I didn't. How come? If you ask me..." he leans in closer to Nikolai "I don't think it went too far. I don't think it went too far at all." He's getting a little more serious now "Look. I think there's a few ways to explain it. Either the dragon flew away when noone was looking. Pffft! Or it up and turned itself invisible and flew off somewhere, or it's made some secret den that noone knows of, or, you know, what if it doesn't look like a dragon any more? What if.. what if it looks just like you or me? That'd be something" He nods to Nikolai and takes a sip of ale.

---------------
"I imagine bribery is just one of those issues that exists everywhere there is something that a person wants and doesn't mind paying for" The cleric responds "Nothing out of the norm. Just something we are keeping an eye on. Trade should be based on the product, not any illegitimate means of attracting business". The cleric bids him well, and as Trayvin leaves, closes the temple doors behind him.

Trayvin starts to make his way to the Temple of Pantheon. It's a few blocks away. By the time he arrives the doors are closed. Evidently justice sleeps around here. He can see that there is a type of noticeboard board at the front of the temple. Looking at it he can see that it is a list of alleged criminals that the Justicars are searching for. No rewards are listed however. None of the names or descriptions sound familiar. Looks like a dead end.

---------------
Pompous is feeling quite pleased with his new purchases. He decides now is a good time to bring a magical animal into the middle of the town. At least most of the crowds have gone. The reaction from those nearby may not have been what he was expecting. There are screams of terror and people fleeing when the griffon magically appears. Keep in mind - the last unusual winged thing they saw here was a big green dragon. Amidst the screams are calls for help: "Guards! Guards! Help!"

The town center has now cleared of people.

It would seem Pompous is going to have some explaining to do when the guards arrive.

Fortunately he does now have a griffon standing beside him.

---------------
Sigvar still can't see that halfling about. He notices the guards and goes over to introduce himself. Fist uniforms are widely recognized and the guards don't seem too bothered by him. One even offers his tobacco pouch to Sigvar, should he care to join them. They're pretty relaxed about things. They are off duty after all. "Yeah, the people here aren't too bad. You get the occasional crazy, and some of the larger events can cause us some grief. Still, much rather be here than in Dirt City"

"You got that right." The other guard gives a knowing nod and looks to Sigvar "So what's your story? What are you here for?"

Naturally, the topic turns to dragons.

The guards smile and start to chuckle "Ah. Big game hunter then. Well, you're right. One was flying off the coast here not long ago. Pretty big one too. I was on duty at the time and saw it myself. Didn't seem to be in much of a hurry. Just flew about here and then disappeared. Poof!" He exhales a puff of smoke to enforce his point.

"You hoping to see one tonight? That why you're out here?"

Michael keeps an eye on the proceedings. Sigvar doesn't look to be in any danger from the guards, other than from potential smoke inhalation. Despite looking, he doesn't notice any halflings in the area.

Michael finds a nice quiet place to hide and keep an eye out. He's got eyes on Sigvar, but no halflings.

That matter is about to be wrapped up though, as Sigvar explains his reason for being out here.

"Nooks?!" The guards start chuckling and shaking their heads. "Ah, I think some of kids are having a bit of fun at your expense. Which ones led you on a chase?" asks one.

The other goes into a bit more detail "Yeah, long as I can remember kids have been using Nooks as a scam. Who broke that window? Nooks. Where's that pie gone? Nooks. Nooks Juyoe. Jokes oN you" he shakes his head as well but keeps on smiling. "Hope they didn't take you for too much"

Sigvar then asks about the rules of combat in the city "I'm guessing you're not talking about a plain ol' barfight. Look, if someone attacks you, well, defend yourself. If they're using force, you're allowed to do the same. As long as you can explain yourself to the Justicars at the end of the day. We'll enforce the law, but at the end of the day it's hard for us to argue against them when it's serious crimes. If you don't go on any murder sprees across the city you should be fine."

-------------------
Nikolai is enjoying the company of the man at the bar. "I dunno. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. My mother, Gargul bless her soul, used to tell me all sorts of tales about dragons. Said they could block out the sun with their wings, could cast spells like the most powerful of wizards, and even take the shape of other things. I don't mind telling you I checked under my bed for years just to be safe." He smiles at the memory "I'm saying that if there's a dragon about, well, I didn't see it flying over the sea. I didn't see anything flying that day. Clear skies and nothing over the sea. Not so much as a gull. Great fishing weather". Nikolai places a gold coin on the table and pushes it towards the man. "No. I'll not be having that. It's my turn to buy the round" He waves to the barman and signals for two beers. He pulls some coppers from his pocket and places them on the counter "I insist".

While they wait for the drinks "Know the coast? Well, I don't mean to boast but I grew up here, and not noone knows the seas better than me" He's very proud of this fact "Sure. There's plenty of big gaps and caves and things out there. You lookin' for someone to take you for a cruise? I'd be happy to give you a tour. You could bring the lunch."

-------------------
Pompous isn't too keen on the situation he has caused. Fortunately a griffon makes for a great getaway. He tries to explain the situation and his needs in his best griffonese. Ever seen a griffon do an eye-roll? You have now. It would seem that the Speak with Animals spell is not quite right for speaking with magical beasts.

Fortunately it does have a little intelligence and can kind of understand what he wants. It lowers itself for Pompous to climb aboard before lifting into the sky. From high in the air he can see some guards rushing to where he had been standing. They aren't checking the skies.

Trayvin heads back to the Sultry Sanctuary. True to her word, the bartender has been poking around the barflys for information.

She gives a jut of her chin when she sees Trayvin enter - a signal to come to the bar. She grabs a mug and starts filling it with ale. "Might be able to help you. That lot.." she looks towards a table in the middle of the room with three jolly men "They saw it coming and going. Said they didn't see where it landed, but it didn't go past the city. So, unfortunately, it's probably real close nearby"

"Those two.." she indicates an elf couple nestled privately at a table "are saying it's a sign and it should be revered as a new deity around here. Nut jobs"

She leaves the mug on the table and starts to walk away "Drinks on me. Just remember that finders fee"

-------------------
Pru wants to meet the man's brother, to which he is happy to oblige "Sure. He's back at the house right now. I'd, er, be happy to show you the place". The way he raises his eyebrows is just a little too suggestive.

Anna thinks now is a good time to excuse themselves from the table. Looking back at the table, Pru's admirer is taking the opportunity to spit on his hands and use it to get his hair just right. Has to look his best after all.

Anna is getting a little concerned about how spread out the party is across the town. Right now they have no idea how Michael and Sigvar are faring with Nooks, where Trayvin is, and goodness knows what Pompous is up to. They're spread across 5 locations.

Sigvar and Michael make the walk empty handed. It had been a wild dragon chase (as Sigvar put it) but if all it cost was 2 gold, well, that's not too bad.

Nikolai agrees to the offer for a boat cruise/tour the following day. "The names Wegwart, but folks call me Weggie." The two shake hands and an agreement is made to meet on the docks the next day.

Anna is unable to get a read on the man. Maybe he does have a brother? Maybe he doesn't? Maybe he does, but the brother lives somewhere else? Too hard to say. She and Pru decide to head back to the hotel with Nikolai in tow

The five make it back to the tavern to find Pompous practically giddy and ready to tell what he has been up to. Go on. Ask him!

The group head inside and find Trayvin already trying to buy some information using the commodity of ale.

The men are more than happy to entertain him with stories

"Yeah I was just coming down the road and approaching the town. I didn't even hear it coming. Just 'whoosh' as it flew over my head. Dirt and leaves all whipped up. It was in quite a hurry I don't mind telling you. Well, I think it was in a hurry. Never seen a dragon before. I guess that was fast for them" says the one you learn to be named Rohan.
"I didn't see it come back but I saw it leave. I was in the town square on the way home and saw it flying off. I didn't see it fly over the town though. Middle of the town, and I could see it off to the north. I'm just glad it avoided the town." Sverd responds.
"What were you doing out at that time of night?" Rohan pries
"Never you mind. That's between me and her and hopefully not her husband" Sverd responds with a huge smile.
That elicits some laughter from the table. The third man then chimes in.
"Don't look at me. I missed it. I was selling my books at the time in the center of the town. Didn't see it at all. I always miss the fun." says Traggart
"Well, I just hope someone kills it before it kills us" Sverd announces.

The elves at the next table turn around to interject. The man speaks up and seems a little offended. "Excuse me, but you can't kill a god. It would eat a non-believer like you for a snack. You need to learn revere it's glory, heathen"

"Pffft. Go worship your little lizard elsewhere"

"How dare.." The elves stand. Sverd, Rohan and Traggart stand. Angry words are spoken between the group as insults get thrown. Things look like they're about to get physical.

Sigvar hears enough to try and head off the physical part of this.He makes sure his holy symbol of Gargul is prominent on his chest . And then...
" Powerful certainly, but hardly a god. Better to worship some evil crawling nightmare from the Abyss than to worship an evil dragon. They tried that once, called it the Emerald Kingdom. I hear it wasn't a very nice place, unless of course you were one of the Dragon's lackeys. Those that served the dragon were kept comfortable at the price of their souls. From what the tales say that lasted until Parnoth caught an arrow in the chest. He flopped over dead and those that had carried out his orders no longer had his protection. From what I hear the common folk that suffered under his rule didn't deal so kindly to those 'worshipers'. You think it'll be different this time? Enlighten me with how this time will be better."
This was just another form of combat, with words rather than blades. Because of that, Sigvar did what he normally did in combat and got the enemy to focus on him. He found it easy, really. Standing ten feet tall, covered in scars and missing an eye was normally a show stopper. He wasn't handsome, or cute, but when he tried he could project a presence. Normally that was all it took.

Nikolai has good news about their next day's sailing cruise but a tavern brawl about to erupt puts that on hold.
Poised to exercise some head bonking to settle things down, he watches as first Sigvar, then Pru, try to calm the offended parties down.

Anna makes a mental note to talk to Pompous later.

Anna says, "What color was this dragon? I don't think it was silver was it? As far as I'm concerned there is only one Dragon that should be revered and that is my lady Queen Ma'ab when she is taking her silver dragon avatar form. Ma'ab has blessed me with the ability to take my own dragon shape. I am considering doing it here and now, but you probably wouldn't like that. You have been warned."(Intimidate: 10)

She then says, "You know maybe instead of doing that I could tell you some stories about Queen Ma'ab's consort Lord Eberyon and how he's atoned for his actions due to the mercy of my lady Queen Ma'ab and that of an adventuring party as well?"

"Ha! That's rich. Gargul created all the evil dragons of the Wold AND gave Marteaus power! No other being is responsible for as much misery and death as he is!" The elf scoffs at Sigvar's remarks "Well, MY god certainly isn't"

Pru steps in to try and calm things down in this religious debate, very tactfully explaining that not every powerful creature is necessarily a deity of any kind. The elves seem to respond to her words and relax a little. Anna though has other ideas and tries to intimidate the elf, riling him up again.

"You don't scare me. No power of yours compares to his!" The elf practically laughs "Taking the form of a dragon would simply be honoring his divine being"

Trayvin is the one to give the whole room a mellow vibe by casting Calm Emotions. (Wis saves 2, 14, 7, 1, 9 all fail). The men and elves take a step back from each other as the magical calm settles in.

Michael enters the room and decides that the outnumbered elves are likely the threat. He takes advantage of the crowd and distraction to make his way behind them.

Nikolai isn't entirely sure what's going down, but he's ready to get involved in fisticuffs if it comes to it.

Pompous is still on a high from his recent ride. Does the calm emotions spell ruin his buzz?

There is an uncomfortable silence as all parties eye each other, looking to see who will throw the first punch.

The opinionated elves are the first to act. The loud mouth looks to Pru "We were just leaving any way. Come on Selai, we have mass tomorrow". The elf pair keep a careful eye on the party as they make their way to the exit.

"Open your eyes and go back to worshiping Maab!" Sverd can't help but call out and antagonize the elves.

Selai turns around and sneers at him but continues to leave the building.

The other patrons in the tavern go back to their conversations, no doubt talking about what they just witnessed.

"Well now. That was a bit of fun. Another round of drinks?" Rohan suggests with a smile

Nikolai has a hard time finding a good time to tell the others about their boat trip tomorrow, however things start getting back to normal and when he can get all of them together, except for Michael, he informs them of what he learned from the mariner.

"It seems that this dragon is not a dragon after all perhaps. Everyone in town who has seen it only saw it passing over, however the fisher men saw it crossing the beach never saw it actually go over the horizon. It just vanished. So it landed somewhere along the coast. Now if it had been here any time at all, its sighting would be old news. But, either way, there must be a cave or something where it hides. 'It' being either a real dragon or someone who can shape change like Anna.

So, I've chartered a boat for tomorrow to search the coast for any possible hidey-hole. Now, we'll be on a ship tossing around, so don't go drinking it up tonight otherwise you'll be pretty sick tomorrow,"
he grins.

DM RobC - "So. What did we find out?"

The group are left a little suspicious following that encounter. Michael gets the nod and goes off in pursuit of the duo - but not before establishing some telepathic communication with the party. (OOC: I'm going to assume that everyone in the party can now telepathically speak with each other)

Nikolai debriefs the party about the plans for a leisure cruise the following day. Whether it is a real dragon or not is still up for debate. Anna still isn't sure how big the dragon is, though is a little concerned that it might be bigger than anything she has heard of before.

Pru is in agreement for some drinks. Trayvin sits back down at the table ready for some too. Assuming the Fist are paying, the men at the table are happy to enjoy a few drinks with them.

Rohan smiles at Trayvin's question "Ha! Tension? Well, having so many religions in one place is always going to mean some heated debates. There's always tension! Still, things have been a bit more, I don't know, uncomfortable lately. Some new lot in town says they worship Maab but there’s something off about them. I can't put my finger on it though. Ever had one of those gut feels? I can't explain it. I mean, they're nice and all but just... weird." He looks quickly to Anna "No offense intended"

"The way I hear it, a lot of the folk that used to follow Maab now believe this ridiculous story about this dragon being their god. They're turning away from her in droves! It's not even the right color!" Traggart looks to Anna "Well, it isn't"

Rohan shakes his head "Isn't stopping them though. I dunno. So many turning away from her and they build that new temple?"

"You're not feeling any sudden urges to change faith, are you?" Sverd asks Anna directly. They all stop to hear her answer.

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {They seem a little uneasy around Anna right now.}

The others then learn of Pompous' encounter and want the juicy details.

Michael follows the two elves out the door and down the main road. They aren't acting suspiciously at all and seem at ease. He's staying far enough away that he isn't noticed, but at the same time that means not being close enough to overhear any conversation in detail. Based on what he observes they don't appear too happy at having to leave the tavern.

A few hundred yards away from the tavern they stop at a crossroad to talk. The one called Selai is gesturing back towards the tavern in an animated fashion. He's clearly still unhappy about what happened. The other elf looks like he's trying to calm him down.

Pru link me with the group or let me take someone who is linked and I'll head off to Ma'ab's temple right away to see if anyone might know where the dragon cult hangs out.
I actually have a chance her to do something meaningful in service to my lady by tracking down her wayward flock and dissuading them against this false deity."

Nikolai is intrigued by the new angle on the mystery.
"Well, looks like we have Plan A and Plan B. So we don't split up, first we take the boat tour and take notes on possible hide out places for dragons. Second, we suddenly become acolytes of Maab under the tutelage of Anna and go visit that temple. Spend some time there, watch the others, and see if we can detect a defector that we can follow.
And with that, I think I'll have a beer."

The party discuss the different abilities of dragons. Can they cast spells? Sigvar is pretty sure they can. What spells? Pru has a few ideas. She also has some ideas on how such a dragon could move about unseen even if it is really big.

Pompous continues to brag about his trip. Griffons! Yay! It brings up the long running goal of the group: to one day be griffon riders. That would be cool!

Anna sees an opportunity to serve her Queen. There's a chance to bring the wayward flock back to Her embrace. That, or she'll have a chance to deal with any that would be dishonoring the Queen. Win win?

Nikolai lays out the two plans. One is to go meet the fisherman and have a tour of the ocean area over a nice lunch. The other is to check out the Temple of Maab.

Anna wants to head to the temple now but finds two obstacles. The first is that Nikolai really doesn't want to split the party up into groups again. The second, perhaps bigger obstacle, is that the temple has closed for the night with the final service having been held at twilight. The good news though is that it opens early for dawn services. Twilight and dawn are special times for the Queen after all.

Michael, for his part, witnesses the two men shake hands and go their separate ways. He follows behind the one called Selai and watches him return to his house for the evening. If he noticed Michael at all he doesn't show it.

The night is starting to draw to a close. Many patrons are leaving to head home for the night. The tavern area is still open for drinks however the chef has closed the kitchen.

Nikolai tries to sound nice to Pru when he asks, "Why should this dragon attack the town at all? If it is truly a dragon, it would have done so a long time ago before abducting our Commander. If it isn't a real dragon, some disaffected Maab worshiper that is trying to get his or her own church going, then he isn't interested in attacking the town anyway. So I suggest using the Mansion again. The food is better anyway.

Here's the plan. Since the temple of Maab holds dawn services, we will go there first and just see what can be seen, observe what can be observed, take note of anyone that seems odd or emanates vibes that don't jive. Then we go take the boat trip. The timing seems perfect. By the way, I'm going to buy some fishing gear so we look like we are really out for some deep sea fishing adventure. Who wants in on that? DM RobC - "We have rooms, right?"
Thursday August 27th, 2020 3:58:42 AM

There isn't much more that the party can do other than retire for the evening.

They take their leave from the tavern and head back to their inn: The Sultry Sanctuary.

Pru checks that the party managed to get rooms. Well, sort of. They got a room (singular) and it's the suite. It's bigger than the standard rooms, sure, but it's going to be a tight squeeze. The large double bed is fitted with red silk sheets and far too many throw pillows. Fresh wild flowers are in a vase on the side table, next to a bottle of good quality red wine and bowl of fresh fruit. The sturdy wooden door keeps the room quiet, and has a good quality lock on the inside. The curtains by the window are very thick to help ensure privacy.

Pru's a little wary about staying in the magical mansion in case the dragon attacks overnight. The party wouldn't know about it until the next morning when they're surrounded by ashes and chaos.

Nikolai tries to reassure her a little. He reasons it has had more than enough time to if that was it's plan. Surely nothing the party has done would change that.

The party come up with a plan for the following day. Early breakfast (either in the tavern or the mansion) followed by a stop at Maab's temple. After that will be the boat cruise.

Anna isn't too sure what form to take tomorrow. So many options! Does she dare take the shape of a dragon in the temple? That's a gamble she'll have to consider.

Michael wordlessly rejoins the party with nothing to report.

So what's the plan? Squeeze into the room or stay in the mansion? Is there a middle ground? Who gets the comfy bed?

The party settle in for the evening. The mansion is by far a more secure place than a nice bedroom suite. Anna keeps watch outside. The night in quite uneventful. There is the sound of some late night revelers partying somewhere close by but that is all. No dragon sightings or burning houses. Phew!

Sigvar isn't entirely sure what the peacebonding rules are like here. Truth is, they differ from place to place and temple to temple. Some require that you tie a strap of leather around any weapons still in their scabbard (Highlight to display spoiler: {Full round action to untie}), some require you to leave your weapons at the door, and some are happy for you to carry non-lethal weapons about freely. Some probably wouldn't care. Sparring with lethal weapons might be common in the Temple of Domi for instance.

Fortunately... members of the Fist are well known for travelling with weapons. While in Fist uniform you should be fine to have your weapons on you without any restraints. If you aren't in Fist uniform you will need to consider whether you will peacebond your weapons in some way.

The party are awake and ready to start the day. The sun is yet to rise, but the glow on the horizon tells you it will be up very soon.

With seven people having shared the one bedroom suite hopefully "don't ask, don't tell" rules apply.

Nikolai decides to head to the docks first though. What will the rest of the party do? How do you want to play things?

---------

Nikolai has quite a list of things he wants to buy. Poles and nets for 7 and several buckets of bait. The docks are understandably busy with fishermen (and fisherwomen) wanting to get out to the ocean as quickly as they can. It's a kind of organised chaos. They've gone through this routine a number of times and everyone knows their part. The weather is really cold but they don't seem to notice it.

Nikolai tries to find a person who looks the least busy and speaks about his needs for the day. One crusty old sea dog stands out. The old man is leaning against a wall and watching the younger generation do the work of getting the boats ready to leave. "Bait I can help you with. Nets probably too. Hmm... we don't really sell poles here though. Might have to try when the stores open" He looks about to see who Nikolai has with him to help carry things "How big do you want the nets to be anyway?" There's a big difference between a normal fishing net and a trawler net. Seems Nikolai has some options.

If they don't find Weggie yet, he pays one them to keep watch over the stuff and wait for Weggie.

Nikolai, maybe we should rent a boat instead? Something big enough to carry us all. Let the fishermen do the sailing while we take a look around. I'm sure we could make it worth their time.

Anna says, "I agree with Trayvin and Sigvar. Calling out the dragon over a sending spell could backfire horribly. Now lets go to the temple of Ma'ab and see if we can't set things right what has been going on there and find a lead to the lair."

When they get at the temple she observes whatever tradition she has to to get in and approaches the highest ranking priest there and says to him, "Brother (or Sister if the head priest is actually a priestess), I am Anna Morphling. I am an experienced Morphling in service of our lady and have achieved the honor of being able to be called champion of the queen with the abilities such an honor bestows as such I can also take the Queen's shape. I have heard a terrible rumor and I would wish to speak with you in private concerning it and what I could do to help alleviate the situation if true."]

If the head priest or priestess takes Anna aside and out of the range of prying ears and eyes she says, "I had heard there is a green dragon stealing followers from this temple. I would do what I could to help dissaude people from leaving the faith. I must admit to you though I have a secondary motive as I believe the dragon has my commander. I have the ability to take the form of a huge silver dragon and am willing to employ this ability in service of retaining your followers and finding the green dragon lair if possible."

Nikolai is able to procure the nets and bait easily enough. It's still too early in the day to go and buy the poles he's after, but once the stalls open he is assured someone will have some for sale. Weggie isn't about yet, though the old man does know the name and smiles. "Yep, you're in good hands with 'im. He may not haul in as much as the larger vessels, but he knows his stuff".

With that he joins the others at the temple.

Sigvar elects to peacebond his weapon before entering (OOC: Please describe how you are doing so)

---------------------

True to the description provided by the drunken men to Pru and Anna, the new temple is huge! It's more like a cathedral than a temple. Easily 50ft wide, 150ft long and 60ft tall. Easily. Steps lead to the wide double doors and once inside you see it to be just as grand as the outside. Stained glass windows are evenly spaced to allow the sun to fill the area with the morning light. Above you can see there is even a horseshoe shaped mezzanine level to provide more room for parishioners to witness services held below. To the left and right of the entrance are the stairs that lead up.

It's certainly unlike any other temple you've seen here.

Anna ONLY... Highlight to display spoiler: {You can't help but feel a little uncomfortable. It's like that feeling of walking into a house identical to your own. Everything is where it should be, but it just doesn't feel right. You can't describe it any other way.}

At the opposite end of this huge hall there is a raised platform area (like a small stage) running the width of the temple and with a golden altar in the center of it. Presumably that is the area where the ceremonies are conducted so as to be visible to all. In front of the platform, to the left and right, are curtained off areas.

A middle-aged human woman in green robes is standing next to the altar and is reading over some papers. At each corner of the platform stands a dwarf dressed in a green vest and pants. They each hold a sickle and watch you very closely as you enter.

Knowl Religion DC15 or Follower of Maab: Highlight to display spoiler: {The favored weapon of Maab's followers is the sickle}

It doesn't look like any parishioners have arrived yet.

The woman smiles as she sees you all enter "Welcome to our temple. May Maab bless your visit here today. Have you come to devote your lives to her?".

The party approach, though when they get to around 20ft from the raised platform the dwarves start to take steps towards the front of it - an indication to come no further. Anna introduces herself and wishes to speak with the priestess in private, to which she declines.

"A terrible rumor you say? I suppose there are rumors and gossip in this city, much like others I have no doubt. I try not to pay them much attention." She seems quite calm about it all "If you have come to speak with us here it must have disturbed you. Tell me Anna, Champion of the Queen, one who takes the Queen's shape, what it is that bothers you? Please, you may speak freely here. We are children of the same mother."

Sigvar is struck by the opulence of the Temple. Isn't Ma'ab the goddess of the trees and the animals? why such a grand Temple? I would expect it to be more....woodsy.
Then Anna speaks to the priestess and reminds Sigvar that Ma'ab assumes the form of a Silver Dragon and he thinks Ah, that may explain it. Dragons enjoy their treasures, maybe that is why they have such an expensive looking temple.
When the guards advance and the priestess speaks Sigvar becomes uneasy. Why so defensive? I mean yeah, a Double Fist of the most well known mercenary company in the Wold just walked through your doors, but we are all peaceful and stuff, I even bound my weapon.

Sigvar nods to the guards as he comes to a halt. As Anna speaks he begins to tactically look at the room. How tough are these 'ushers', where would he put snipers if he were defending this place, where are the fall back positions, how do they not die in the first few minutes if this is a trap?

We were trying to find more information on the dragon when we had an altercation with some elves who apparently worship what is potentially the same dragon we were searching for. One of the elves was named Selai. Asking around we were told there was a group of people who used to worship our lady that have converted to worshiping this false green dragon god. If my lady is losing followers to this impostor then I feel it is imparative of me to do something about it especially when I have been blessed with the ability to take the Queen's shape. Perhaps if those who are lost in their faith and have become enamored with a false dragon god could see the power of our queen made manifest in true silver colors they would think twice and the wayward members of the flock could return."

OOC to Nikolai: The boat is a good size and will fit everyone in the party. I was comparing it to large fishing trawlers with huge nets that other, larger crews might be using

Sigvar checks out the surroundings. If he were going to set up an ambush, he'd put snipers on the mezzanine level on opposite sides of the room. They'd have the high ground and clear vantage points to hit the party from both sides. The hall is large, however there are uprights placed around the room. They could offer a little cover. The dwarves and woman though are backed into the room and have no exits from the raised platform. If it is a trap then they'd have to fight their way through the party - not a very wise thing to do you'd think. While the party stand where they do, the dwarves and priestess are effectively cornered.

He looks over the dwarves. They are stocky (like most dwarves) and they carry themselves confidently. They didn't hesitate to step forward against the party and right now they are looking over each of you carefully. They are no doubt assessing you, as you assess them. They don't seem intimidated at all. If he was to pick a flaw, Sigvar notices that one of the dwarves is holding the blade of his sickle around the wrong way. Noone trained in how to use one would make that kind of rookie mistake.

Pru and Pompous are quite impressed by the temple, though you have to wonder what sort of property Pompous' parents have.

Trayvin and Nikolai stay in the background and let Anna take the lead.

Anna explains why the party are at the temple, as well as her concerns.

"I am High Priestess Eidinth. I run this humble temple in service to the Queen." she places a hand to her chest and then addresses Anna's points. "My, I can see why this may bother you. A false dragon god? Well, I suppose people are free to believe in whatever they choose. Perhaps the Queen taking the form of a dragon might be misinterpreted by those leaving the church? Think about it. If she chooses to take the form of a dragon, then what message does that convey? That an immortal power wishes it were a dragon. You taking that form yourself may send the wrong message"

"Now, before we interfere with their beliefs, I would put this to you. If there is a dragon in these areas, shouldn't we approach it with an offer of friendship first? Wasn't it Maab that said to love and respect all creatures wherever we find them?"

Anna or Knowl Religion DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {That sounds like something Maab would say}

Anna says, "High Priestess Eidinth while loving and respecting all creatures sounds like something Our Lady might say there are key differences between the animals, plants, magical beasts, fey and humanoids that are typically considered to be those beings under her purview and chromatic dragons. I should know as I have the abiility to take the form of them and I have been many different animals, plants, magical beasts and humanoids. As I said I have also been granted the ability to take the form of a silver dragon like our lady as she has earned the respect of many a good dragons. The thing is there are stark differences between good and evil dragons and good dragons are always metallic while evil dragons are always chromatic. This isn't something where these dragons can change their nature easily as it is tied partially to their creation. Furthermore I would think she would care more for the potential harm a chromatic dragon could do for animals, plants and humanoids (like my human commander) than to try to somehow figure out a way to bribe it to behave.

Our Lady is merciful but even mercy has its limit. Besides being a champion of our Lady I am also a Cradled of her consort Eberyon. As you know it was her own mercy in conjunction with that of an adventuring group that allowed for Lord Eberyon to wake from his long sleep and atone for his actions. The fey are a lot more mercurial than dragons as metallic dragons are always good and chromatic dragons are always evil to my knowledge. As my companions have pointed out this dragon abducted our commander so if it was legitimately interested in atoning for this transgression than maybe I could extend a hand in friendship to it but it is really difficult for dragons to change their scales therefore I think the odds of this one atoning for its actions are very slim especially since it has not made any attempt to return our commander as yet and as I said at least one elf named Selai has come to worship this dragon as a god. Are Dragons powerful? Yes but they aren't deities or immortal powers aside from Alemi and Our Lady who both on occasion have taken forms of specific colors of metallic dragons. I can only wonder if this dragon has some nefarious purpose in trying to ammass a following especially if it is leaching followers from Our Lady."

Sigvar remains stone faced. However, on the inside his brain is starting to turn on the fact that Anna, someone he has fought and bled beside is VERY passionate about this loss of followers to her goddess, and rightly so in his opinion, whereas this high priestess is very blase' and seems to not care one way or the other.
While remaining at parade rest Sigvar closes his eye and centers himself. Surely the idea that the new church of Ma'ab was an evil dragon cult was absurd, wasn't it? Having most recently been in the town of an Evil Lich where EVERYTHING was evil, Sigvar expects that when he opens his eye and looks around the room, REALLY looks around the room, (ie detecting evil as subtly as he can. To me it is simply a shift in awareness and shouldn't be that noticeable unless it is made a big deal about it, up to you and how you see it though, he is doing it) he expects to see varying degrees of nothing ranging from 'Oh how pious I am' to 'every now and again I seal some of my neighbor's hen's eggs'. Anything else would be in direct contradiction to what he expects to see.

Pru attempts a little diplomacy. The dragon kidnapped the commander? Surely returning her would be a good start to forming a friendship. Anything short of that would be a deal-breaker though. The priestess doesn't address it though and instead redirects. "Can I ask though, why did a dragon take in interest in your commander? Do they have a history?"

Nikolai is a little more direct with his point, but Eidinth still stays calm. "Intelligent creatures often have reasons for their choices. Perhaps claiming your commander was for a greater good?". He makes a reference to some gnolls that he sent to the afterlife, but his mutterings don't seem to have been heard.

Anna gives the priestess a lesson on all things Maab (and a little on Eberyon too, for good measure). Eidinth listens patiently, nodding along as Anna speaks and not interrupting. She slowly paces along the platformed area as she does so.

After admiring the structure for a while Pompous turns his eye back to the proceedings. As Anna speaks, Pompous notices two of the dwarves tighten their grips on their sickles. One of the others is obviously clenching his jaw and even adjusts his stance a little. As the priestess moves he also can make out a bulge on the right side of her robe. Best guess is that she is concealing a weapon. Likely a sword.

After listening to what Anna has to say, Eidinth stops pacing. She seems in deep concentration before she finally speaks up. "What you have said is true. For the most part. Tell me, Anna who takes the Queen's shape, have you ever taken the form of a chromatic dragon? Could you, if you so wanted? In doing so, would that make you evil? How something appears is not necessarily how something is"

"Let me also challenge your thinking. What if the true form of our Lady is that of a dragon? That would be evidence that dragons could develop into deities, wouldn't it?"

Sigvar gives the altar a good look. He can see three plates, a large goblet, and four candle holders - all gold. Fancy. He then takes a deep breath and looks about for signs of evil.
