Scene 6: The Upper Floor

The Agents know that this is the time and place, and they leap into action, Sigvar leading the way into the darkness as many of the others prepare spells and other magical defenses. Sigvar can see most clearly – not because of the light, but because of his detecting evil. Now that he is in the room he can tell that there are eight individual distinct evil creatures in the room that radiate a moderate aura of evil! He can quickly spot and locate those auras around the large open space and point them out to others.

Those with darkvision have a great deal of difficulty seeing what Sigvar is pointing out. They can see vague blobs in the directions he points out, but it almost seems as if most of the room is just blobs of darkness moving about. The everburning torch lights up some of the figures near to the group, but even those just appear to be massive piles of squirming masses of darkness. As soon as you spot the figures, the stench hits you: these things absolutely stink. It smells like rotting dead crap. They are very large piles of squirming something.

Beyond those piles of masses, Sigvar can point out the other roughly humanoid figures. Those with darkvision can see just two dots of light where eyes should be, but little else. Those with normal vision may occasionally see a red dot shining out of what looks like red mist that is sort of humanoid shape, but also moving along the edges, making it unclear exactly what shape those things are.

The rest of the room looks quite empty from what you can see. There is a single round pillar at a strange location, not quite centered in the room, but the rest of the space looks like a trash pit. There are bits of broken furniture around and small piles of trash that look like they should be blowing in a street somewhere. But your attention is quickly drawn back to the eight different masses of shadowy darkness that are now clearly aware of your presence and the castle suddenly feels even smaller than it did before…

Normally, Pru's Dancing Lights are good enough to illuminate most areas, but she senses that this situation is going to need a bit more. She pulls out a sunrod, somewhat surprised to find it still in her haversack, and strikes it to activate its glow.

squirming black masses 12. red mist 28

Hey, I can't remember the names of the red mist but you gotta hit it with magic weapons and it attacks by engulfing people and suffocating them. .

Hasted Michael flips around S4 on the 3 row to get to B colum row 5. Hopefull Anna or Sigvar will see this and give him a flanking partner. meanwile once he gets in positon he probes the black pile of trash to get a feel for it's weak spots.

Nikolai does not have time to figure out what these things are. He whips out his magical kama as he moves. Anna moves to F3 and becomes large, filling up that whole section against that wall, so Nikolai moves to E4 to help Michael.

Pru breaks out the sunrod and brightens up the room. This indeed helps everyone see the squirming masses, though you’re not sure you really wanted to see their ugliness. They look like masses of evil, death, and waste squirming around on the ground.

Sigvar spots the evil and quickly chops and slices into one of them. He slaughers the first one and it stops squirming, though now Sigvar is covered with bits of horrible, sinking nastiness. Trayvin calls out in a prayer, aiding the Agents and affecting some of the evil in the room. Anna shifts and suddenly there is a large red dragon headed manticore chimera monster beast creature thing in her place! Michels turns and tumbles to get around one of the masses, slicing into it as he goes.

Nikolai watches Anna move towards the wall and he quickly moves up. As he does, a long, slimy tentacle reaches out from the mass, but he steps aside and it slaps into the ground. He spins and stabs into the stinky mess. When he does, he realizes that this thing is not undead, just evil, slimy, and smelly. Pompous takes a step and casts a spell. A roaring wall of wind appears in the room which is feeling smaller and smaller by the minute due to all the activity in the room!

Two of the large blobs focus on Sigvar. Their long tentacles slam out at him, a few striking accurately. One slings around his leg and attaches itself to him! He can feel the pain of large wounds in his legs and the creature starts draining his blood! At the same time a rather large set of teeth appear from the wriggling mass and bite him (Sigvar: 29 total damage, grappled). The other lashes out at Nikolai, but he manages to dodge the various tentacles. The massive set of teeth appearing out of the mass surprises him and strikes true (Nikoali: 11 damage).

Michael very suddenly finds himself surrounded by the roughly humanoid red misty figures. Long, strange bits of mist reach out for him from the figures. As they reach him, he can tell they are solid: the strike him and dig into him, causing him pain (Michael: 13 damage). Bu before he can react, the tentacles start pushing and pulling him as the creature moves tries to move into the space Michael occupies!

OOC:
Michael’s move to B3: You mentioned going on the 3 row. I see that move as F4 to E3, then E3 to B3, then B3 to B5. S4 has reach, so starting in F4, you are in a threatened space. That appears to be moving through six threatened squares of S4 and two threatened squares of R1! With a +24 on acrobatics, rolling those eight acrobatics checks should be easy, but you would need to roll seven more of them! Due to later developments, we’ll forget this for now (see below).

Sigvar is grappled. Also has 2 points of con damage: “Damage to your Constitution score causes you to take penalties on your Fortitude saving throws. In addition, multiply your total Hit Dice by this penalty and subtract that amount from your current and total hit points. Lost hit points are restored when the damage to your Constitution is healed. A character with a Constitution score of 0 is dead.”

Michael: IMPORTANT! Please don’t miss this part. The red creatures are trying to engulf Michael. All three have made successful attempts. All three are attempting to occupy the space where you are! In theory, you can choose to make an AOO against one if you like. If you do, you do NOT get to save against their attempt. Against the other two (or all three, if you choose not to make an AOO), you can attempt a reflex save, DC 18, to move out of their space. I realize that you have a +20 or so on reflex right now. But since there is nowhere for you to move safely out of their reach, one of them is going to engulf Michael! Therefore, Michael, no need to roll, Michael currently has the pinned condition, is trapped inside the body of one of the things, and receives 5 damage and 5 con damage (see above for con damage rules). CMD is 26 to escape the pin.

Covered in gore, Sigvar steps into the grapple and continues killing evil. He smites the creature grappling him and starts there.

Sigvar is grappled, but looks like he can handle it. Pru is far more concerned about Michael, whom she can't even see, let alone reach.

She activates her Boots of Levitation, which she would use more often if her idiot player would remember she has them, and floats up toward the ceiling. From this vantage point, she attempts to target one of the red humanoids with a spell. She fails.]

[Try to cast on R3. Fail SR. Use Hero point to re-roll. Fail SR again with the exact same roll. Give up and pout.]

Trayvin tries to help Michael get a little bit more wiggling room. He casts holy smite on the area centered on Michael. Michael, try to withdraw behind the windwall, maybe they cant pass through it

Seeing Michael stuck on the WRONG side of the windwall, Pompous facepalms his forehead and lets loose an loud and boisterous

He knows that his arrows aren't going to get past the wall and as such he has no target. So he waits to see if one of the oponents moves in past the wall.

Sigvar steps up, smearing himself with more stinky gore, and chops into one of the masses (S3). He strikes true and slashes and chops another of the beasts into nothing. He now has more bits of gore all over him and the smell is getting worse. Pru pulls out a shiny pair of boots that just don’t seem to get enough use and floats up to the ceiling. She heroically casts some spells, but they just can’t seem to penetrate the strange red creatures. Anna-Manticore violently attacks the mass near her, but the defenses are indeed strong with the mass of evil.

Trayvin casts the holy spell and holiness smashes into the ground around Michael. The creatures are affected and are evil, but are not outsiders. His spell gets through their resistance, but just one takes the full damage (with a failed save). Michael squirms and moves, and quickly throws off the strange creature. As he does so, he takes a quick stab with his rapier, hitting the monster. Nikolai turns and dives between Anna-Manticore and the filthy beast. However, when he turns his head, a strange tentacle slaps out at him, stopping his movement. He manages to stop his roll just in time that the tentacle grabs nothing but air next to him. He spins and stabs out at the tentacle striking it solidly, only to be hit with some of the black goo from the mass.

Pompous, having effectively stopped himself and his arrows from entering the fray, calls out in frustration. He watches Nikolai move into the wind wall.

The other blob near Sigvar does not seem bothered by how quickly he has slashed through the others. Tentacles and teeth flail out at Sigvar. Most miss, but one tentacle hits him in the leg (5 damage) and quickly starts draining his blood (grappled, 3 more con damage). The other creature splits its tentacle attacks, sending two towards the new manticore in the room and two at the moving creature (Nikolai). The two tentacles reaching out for Anna don’t even come close. Both the tentacles attacking Nikolai strike true (12 total damage). They try to grab on to him, and one succeeds! It starts draining his blood through the tentacle (1 con damage) while the massive teeth of the creature miss him.

Along the wall, Michael is fighting for his life. The three creatures reach out again with their tentacle-like arms and slam into him (7 damage). They attempt to move into his space and engulf him again (three reflex saves, DC 18, or engulfed).

OOC:
Nikolai, it was a DC 30 to tumble through S4’s threatened space! With a failure, Nikolai is stopped and receives an AOO. I redirected the attack to S4, hope that’s okay!

Anna: Spiderclimb: it was a bit of running around on the second floor looking for the stairs. I’d say it’s been half an hour to 45 minutes, so still plenty left there.

At level 13, by my math, both Sigvar and Michael are down 65 hit points (both 65 points of damage and 65 off the max hit points)! Adding together round 1 and round 2: Sigvar has taken 34 points of damage plus 65 points from con damage = 99 points of damage. Max hp should be 81, so I calculate that as currently 47/81 hit points! For Michael, 20 points plus 65 from con = 85 points of damage. Max hp should now be 38, so I calculate that as 18/38. Please do check my math!

Nikolai is down 13, with damage of 23, should be at 60/83.

OOC: I see as having 13 damage and 5 damage per DM post on 1/10/2020 7 damage per Dm post 1/13/2020 total 25. con reduced to 7 so -2hp natch hp 64 -25 = 39 hp. HP determined by Excel character sheet. 13*3 = 39 hp lost via con damage. 103 -39 -25 = 39 Checksum valid .

Michael squirms away from the red creatures and instead focuses on the black blob. He quickly slices and dices it into tiny pieces of nasty, smell, evilness. When it stops moving, he starts heading towards the wind wall. Trayvin moves up and aids Anna with divine favor. Floating Pru carefully aims her spell and fires the disintegrate at one of the red vaporous creatures. It strikes, but doesn’t seem to bother it much (made the save). Anna starts to attack the squirming mass, but Michael has defeated it. Nikolai moves up to help out Michael and almost runs into him trying to get away. He is no longer flanking with Michael, but he manages to get one hit on the creature. Pompous calls out, asking for help and direction with his wind wall.

The remaining black mass does not slow down and continues slamming into Sigvar. Two more tentacles slam into him (damage: 19) and both attach to him! There are now three tentacles attached to Sigvar and all of them are draining his blood, very quickly (additional con damage: 6)! Sigvar’s fur is starting to look a bit extra-wilted and is even starting to turn grey in spots! At the same time, the other red creature reaches out at him, striking him with tentacles (7 damage) and trying to engulf him!

The other red creatures see their meal trying to escape, so they follow him along, reaching out with their tentacles. One hits Michael in the back (4 damage) and tries to pull itself into his space. The one that Nikolai attacked, attacks him back with long tentacles, striking him twice (damage: 10) and trying to enter into his space!

Thank you for checking my math on the con damages! Yes, if weapons are magical, they overcome DR/magic. I’m not sure on the escape artist – it looks like it is a standard action to escape, no matter how you do it, but it’s not 100% clear to me…

I though you lost 1 hp per level per 2 con damage, the way you gain it but that is not the case. So at 12 con loss I have 0 max hp.

reflex saves 23 and 28 ( it is -2 for being grappled right? That's what I subtracted)
Sigvar avoids being engulfed however if S2 is still alive he is down from hp/con loss.
11x13= 143 so 3 max hp and cumulative damage puts him at -30

Pru drops her fireball in behind the monsters on the far side of the room. It explodes and catches some of the red things. The duck and dodge, but also let out an ear-piercing scream as they burn. Sigvar launches into the last twisting mass and attacks furiously. He damages it severely, but it is still moving and twisting in the darkness! Trayvin starts a spell and calls out that they should leave the wind wall up for now. Anna steps up and attacks the red creature, striking hard, but some of the blows seem to be absorbed (DR). Michael flips and dodges to attempt to help Sigvar. He stabs the red creature in the side. Nikolai strikes with a quick jab before calling out to Michael and stepping behind the wind wall. Pompous continues to work to keep the wind wall active.

The evil monsters continue their attacks. The remaining mass appears to be in pieces, but the tentacles reach out one more time, trying to finish off Sigvar, but they are unable to make contact with him at all! The red thing near him ignores the attack from Michael and tries to engulf Sigvar again after striking him with a tentacle (6 damage). At the same time, another follows Michael’s tumble, attacking him. Two tentacles slam Michael in the back (8 damage) and it tries to engulf him. The other two are distracted by the massive manticore-like thing and tentacles fly towards it. None of them manage to make contact with the strange creature.

Sigvar, my math was incorrect on the con damage. 11 con damage is just 11/2=5 x 13= 65 total. So if my new math is correct, that puts Sigvar at a max hp of 146-65=81 with damage of 34+19=53, so 81-53= current hit points 28/81. Then the heal +27 = 55/81. Plus this round, 6 damage = 49/81. And with a con of 14, he isn’t dead from con damage until he hits 14 damage.

Sigvar heals himself and squirms away from the enveloping misty thing, pushing it away. He heals himself and chops at S2, and the mass of dark evil finally stops squirming! Pru tries to help, but most of her magic seems to be ignored by the creatures. Michael calls out, but continues his attacks on the red creature Pru hit and it finally falls to the ground as a blob or darkness and blurry redness. Anna-manticore continues a full attack on the creature near her and chops into it, seriously injuring it. It gives out a horrible screeching cry of pain. Nikolai steps back up through the wind wall while Pompous yells about the wall. Apparently the wall or the yelling distract him, and he is unable to hit the creature.

The creature Nikolai attacked attacks him back, striking him with a tentacle (1 damage) and moving forward into his space. The seriously injured one attacks Anna manticore and also hits with a tentacle (5 damage) and it moves into her space as well. The final one next to Michael does exactly the same thing as the others, also striking once (2 damage) and moving into his space.

OOC:
Sigvar makeup round almost kills S2, but it’s alive. The next round the failed save means he is engulfed and pinned. He can use a move action with the escape the grapple, but then only has a regular attack, not a full attack action left, so that attack will kill S2.

Sigvar spots the gap between Michael and one of the red figures. He steps up and swings away, a massive blow that strikes true. The creature responds with another ear-piercing wail! Trayvin brings a tiger into existence and it strikes the red creature that was attempting to engulf Michael. Pru steps up to aid Sigvar with a bit more magic. Michael quickly dodges the attack from one creatures and disappears into the melee of battle only to reappear on the far side, against the wall again, effectively flanking the creature that attacked Anna. He chops effectively into it, but it does not quite fall. This one screams in pain again. Anna just manages to shove the monster out of her space, keeping it from engulfing her, and she lays into it, attacking again and again. Finally the creature falls to the ground. Nikolai steps around the fallen creatures and stabs one of the remaining monsters. Pompous is tired of not being in the fight. He drops the wall of wind and fires arrows. The arrows launch into the injured creature that had attacked Anna and it falls to the ground with arrows sticking out of it.

The eyes of the last creature seem to glance around the room. It turns to what it perceives to be the easy target and wraps its tentacles around the tiger. It strikes and moves to engulf the tiger.

OOC:
Trayvin: I’m pretty sure when the tiger hits with a claw attack it can attempt to grapple (from the grab ability). Also, I believe when you finish the summoning, you also can take an additional action since the summoning ends at the start of your turn.
Nikolai: Sorry for the confusion, the tracker at the end of this section was tracking cumulative con damage and Nikolai took 1 very early in the combat, that’s what that indicates. The save last round was for the additional 4 con damage that he avoided.
Redirected Nikolai’s attack to R2 since R1 was killed by Anna (but not flanking with anyone there) – still hits, but reduced damage by the team flanking bonus).
Tiger: Hit for 11 damage. Reflex save DC 18 or engulfed (if fail save, 5 more damage and 2 con damage, and pinned condition).
Note for everyone: There is just the single creature left. If the tiger fails its save, the creature will occupy the same space as the tiger. You cannot attack the creature without hitting the tiger. You can work together to attempt to help the tiger escape the pinned condition. Of course, if the tiger makes the save, with 96 damage, the creature’s done here.

The tiger quickly moves out of the way of the strange creature. Tony, Michael, Pru, and Anna move up and absolutely slaughter the monster before it can even make another sound. For good measure, Pompous fires a couple arrows into it as well. It slips to the ground and Sigvar nearly follows it down, exhausted.

Nikolai looks around the room. He sees that the pillar is actually yet another spiral staircase leading up. Around the room there are bits of trash and things that look very old. It looks as if no one has been in here for a long time. In the nw corner of the room, he does spot a piece of cloth that looks unlike everything else. While other cloth in the room is rotted and decayed, this folded-up piece of cloth looks to be in perfect shape…

Pompous joins the others. The rangers feels a bit ashamed that he stayed out of the fight until the last moment. The wind wall totally negated his arrows. Still, having a ranger at full health when all the others are damaged is not a bad thing.

SIgvar catches his breath some, now that the fighting has stopped." I see no reason why there would be any more defense than we have already overcome. Nothing has changed in the time we have been here. No damage has been repaired, none of the defenders replaced and no traps reset. There is no sign that there is anything here but summoned demons and very dark and obscure monsters. With almost all of my blood gone I am as weak as a kitten (con 3). Walking back to the village is going to wind me, but I can manage. If you think scouting is worth it, go ahead, but once these spells wear off there is going to be very little I can do to help you in a fight."

Pru is worried about Sigvar. She mentions resting. Trayvin reaches over and Sigvar is filled with energy as all his drains are quickly removed. There are still two others with constitution damage. Anna mentions that she can continue or work to help the group move back to the town. Nikolai wants to follow the tiger up the stairs, but he’s wary of traps. Pompous sheepishly moves up to back up Nikolai. Sigvar pauses as his health is quickly restored.

Nikolai finds a place off to the side of the tainted land, just at the edge of some woods with a solid view of the castle and the bridge. "We are all now stronger and more powerful. How can we compliment each other? That is something we should look at before we reach the final part of this den of evil. Currently I can enchant up to three weapons to a +3 enhancement bonus. Michael was my obvious choice for this as he easily does the most damage of us all in melee. I can also sheathe myself in a new magic to me, dispel evil that will keep me safe from evil enchantments and will grant me even more defense against being hit, especially against attacks that just need to touch me. Additionally those attacking foes within 10 feet of me will find their attacks to be considered good aligned, making DR easier to overcome. This lasts as long as I am conscious."
"Prudence, will you be able to train me better in flight? I still need help learning to use that type of magic."

Some of her companions may recall a time when Pru was a brunette. Those days are over. Her hair has been growing gradually redder as her fire magic increased, and now it is like a river of flame on her head.

"I've always got a Fly spell for you Sigvar," she says. "Never fear. Practice whenever you need to."

"I can cast Teleport now," she says. "I can't get everybody in one go, but hey, I'm a sorcerer. I'll just cast it a lot. If we need to get anywhere in a hurry. For combat, I've got Chain Lightning now, which lets me bounce a lightning bolt from enemy to enemy. Also, Reverse Gravity, which might be fun. And I seem to be faster." [Pru's base speed is now 60.]

DMs, one of the powers Sigvar can impart to his chosen weapon is disruption. Normally that only affects blunt weapons. In this case since it is specific to the paladin's chosen weapon does it apply to a sword or is it still limited to a blunt weapon. I wanted to ask before we encounter undead and he is tempted to use it.
Others, keep commenting on your new powers. We will need every edge to beat the final encounter here since the DM was thinking we were tougher 8).

Michael helps with the camp prep. but he's been thinking. he thinks he may be able to get a bit more precision out of his cuts and stabs. (8d6 precision damage now). and maybe another series of attacks. (+11,+6, +1 plus blades akimbo equals 6 attacks now, 7 with haste. He' been hoarding his money for a big purchase that may help (sun blade). He's also a bit more resistant to attacks now with his lightning stance feat, he figures since he is always getting all the aggro from the big baddies, having 50% concealment might not hurt.

Well guys I think I figured out a way of widening out the holes a poke in guys to get a little more damage out of them. I also think I'm fast enough now to attack a bit more. and I'm fast enough that if I try I'll be a whole lot harder to hit if I concentrate on it. Really Sigvar, you can make my blades +3? is it like permanent or just for a battle or two? .

Anna says, "Well my vine can bull rush, disarm or trip, it extends 15 feet and I can use it 9 times a day. I might as well use my statue spell each day because it lasts for a long time and I can become a statue at will which might be handy. I can also make my body as hard as iron for a short amount of time and regenerate limbs that I might lose once per day. I don't think I'll find any new forms besides being able to turn into a large or huge dragon but now that I can be a huge dragon I can use my cone of cold as many times as I want after a sleight cooldown."

Morning comes quickly and dawns brightly. The day feels like it will be warm, but there is a light breeze coming down the mountain, making it feel a bit cooler. Pru starts out casting a spell and asks who else is ready for more? Trayvin mentions that the group should work more on coordination, noting how their miscoordination in the past has worked against them. Anna mentions a few more abilities she has and describes how she can use them more. Michael wonders what it would be like to be made of stone. Pompous and Sigvar check their weapons.

Please be sure to post extra abilities, spells, and such that you have active as we prepare to move along. I assume that you’re headed up the stairs, and I’m preparing the map and such. It is a narrow stairway, so I’m going to need a marching order. Two other notes: the space at the top of the stairs is small and narrow, so I do need to know who will enter the space first, under what conditions, what spells might be leading, going off, etc. Take your time as needed to coordinate, this may be important…

Yeah Pru, once we get up near the stairs I'll take the invisibility, that ought to help me get in position once the battle starts and also let me maybe get a little recon in on the baddies before we get it stuck in.

Sigvar casts Greater Magic Weapon on his sword and Michael's 2 blades. This brings their weapons up to +3. At the bottom of the stairs, before they go up, he casts Resist energy fire, cold and electricity on himself. He lefts Prudence know that he is now pretty well able to shrug off fire damage so if she needs to, she can include him in the area of her fire spells. Since the intel says this is a lich they are facing he also pulls out a scroll and attaches it to the back of his shield, ready to be read if needed (Death Ward).
When Prudence announces her spells Sigvar asks if she can make him fly. He doesn't know the layout of the room but the added speed and the possibility of being able to be above one of his teammates or the opponent adds more flexibility to their group and may open up more floor space to the others.

Everyone is healed up and final preparations are made as the group prepares to head back inside the evil castle.

OOC:
No rush, please do prepare all you need and want. I will need to know who and how is going in first. The next set of spiral stairs are narrow, those who are large will have to squeeze. I apologize in advance if things slow down a bit -- because of the narrow stairs, only some actions may end up happening each time (for example, if everyone posts an action and then the first person up the stairs trips, we'd have to pause to allow those who were behind a round to re-adjust their actions).
