Tinker approves the preparations. The Fist take care of their own, and that should include their families in good standing. He goes with Nikolai to get permission, and then to Q to requisition a wagon or two and the tools to rig up a hoist.

His eyes gleam at the thought of working with tools. Almost as good as locks!

Between the two boys, they manage to tell as much as they know of the story. The tornado came through Echo Dwelling only a few days ago, and much of the town and surrounding fields were destroyed, and it sounds like there was more than one death. Seeing a chance to do some good, the Agents are eager to do what they can for the boys and their hometown.

Nikolai is quick to take charge, organizing the myriad offers of help into a plan of action. A steward gathers up the boys to get them something hot to drink and help them compose their letter as the Agents go to their meeting with Commander Palance.

Palance is busy as ever, and even with the reduction in the levels of the Fist, there has been even more responsibility heaped onto her. She seems more than up to the task, and is quick to address the Agents after one last flourish of her quill.

Good morning, Agents. Before we get down to business, I'm interested to know how your meeting with our esteemed guests went. I take it they inspired you a bit? They were certainly some impressive figures.

Yes, Ma'am, it was quite the honor to meet with such esteemed persons. I think they were trying to feel us out, see if the fist was on the right track, so to speak. I don't think they were from a military background, some of the terms we used were somewhat confusing for them. but in the end they were satisfied that the Fist was on the right track.

They asked us if we, as in the agents, wanted to join the DC. I told them that if it was so ordered and benefited the Fist I would join. it seemed like they had talked to you about it...Is it your wish for us to go on detached duty?

A couple of our pages from Echo Dwelling are having some trouble, their community got hit by a tornado, sounds like it may be the end of the community. we would like to go help.
I think this would be a good thing to do. one, . helping out the community is not just what good folk do, but it's will be good for troop morale as well. I'm not a big fan of becoming an army dedicated to "operations other than war" but these are our people. We need to help. it's the right thing to do. Two it's a good opportunity to help rebuild the image of the Mailed fist. 3. I think we need something like this as well, the last few mission have got me feeling...like I need to do something positive.

"I concur with Michael, Ma'am about the DC. They also gave us the gift of a new standard."

"As for the tornado at Echo Dwelling, I too think this is an opportunity to do some good. I'm not saying the Fist becomes an organization dedicated for something other than war, but there is something to be said for humanitarian missions. Maybe we could develop a Mailed Fist Corp of Engineers? These engineers could specialize in building things like bridges, dams or fortifications in the field. This mission to aid Echo Dwelling could be good experience if we do plan to assemble such a unit."

Nikolai does not contain his chuckle when Michael states they were invited to join the Dragon Consortium. After the others have spoken, he tells the commander,
"They didn't actually invite us to join them, yet. They were, as we would call it, a scouting party. They wanted to know how dedicated we were to maintaining the Mailed Fist Code, how dedicated we were to you, and, as mentioned, if we would be interested in joining them, if they were to ask.

They were pleased with our answers on all accounts.

As far as Echo Dwelling, not only would we be helping the people in our own front yard and the families of employees of the Mailed Fist. it would be a good diversion for the troops. Martial Training right now is a bit strained and the troops could use a week or two putting homes and barns back together again. It would be a great moral and reputation builder at the same time.

All we need is your approval for a the two pages to be excused from duty during this time and your approval to form an engineering work detail with adequate supplies. We requested a list of the damage so we can estimate how much supplies we'll need.

Oh, and the Dragon Consortium emissaries gave us this banner. I'd like it put in the Great Hall, by your permission."

Nikolai unfurls the banner and shows the commander its magical artistry.

DM Warren
Thursday March 24th, 2016 6:29:27 PM

Palance scrutinizes each Agent as they speak of their experience with the Consortium visitors, and as they plead the case of the two pages. She chuckles a bit when Michael mentions joining the DC, and nods with Nikolai's correction. These pups are still a bit green for that group, but it's good to have something for which to shoot.

The tornado is not surprising, they can happen at this time of year regularly. But one of that severity has not been seen is a long while, and towns have been lucky to avoid the worst of the damage.

She ponders the situation. Humanitarian aid is in order. I've been setting up a mission with Aisildur to do just that, but the details won't be worked out for some time yet. If you feel strongly about this, the I propose you don't wait for a letter to go back and forth, but set out immediately with supplies. If more are needed, they can come after, or better yet, we can send carpenters to harvest trees for new lumber nearer to Echo Dwelling.

She ruffles some papers on her desk, looking at duty rosters, lists of repairs necessary within the Citadel, and reports of what supplies are on hand. She quickly pulls together several names of laborers and engineers that can be spared from duties in the Citadel, as well as a general list of supplies to requisition from Q, and authorization for the Agents to take the personnel on this mission.

That is a nice gift, but what use do we have of a banner proclaiming us in our own fortress? I know who we are, and we have banners aplenty. Why don't you take it with you, so the residents of Echo Dwelling don't panic at the sight of an armed caravan coming into town?

Nikolai accepts his commander's suggestion that they keep the banner and use it when they travel to help identify themselves.

When Anna tells him that she no longer has the ability to affect plants like she used to, he sighs.
"No, don't use your funds that way. Those aren't good odds and you can't help everyone with only one casting of Plant Growth and it would be too expensive to purchase more, and that's assuming none fail. We can look through the Mailed Fist roster and locate some druids once we are finished with our rebuilding."

He turns to Tinker, Trayvin, and Michael, "Here's the requisition letters for the materials, start collecting. I'm sure Q will be of help."

He turns to Anna and Pru, "Here's the Reassignment Roster for the engineers and carpenters. Find them, explain what they are to do, and tell them to be ready to move out as soon as we have all the supplies."

As for himself, he goes to the armory and picks out a sturdy banner pole and attaches their new banner to it. Then he goes to the stables and picks out horses for them, keeping in mind how dwarves don't like to ride. He sets aside a saddle with a pole holster for his own use, telling the stable hands to feed and water those horses very well as they'll be taking a long trip shortly.

He pictures himself riding out with the banner flapping in the wind and just can't fathom it just yet. His father was an expert lancer and carried a lance like it was nothing. He hopes he has some of that in him as well.

I'm gonna go sweet talk Q into getting us the sundries we will need. Trayvin, you take care of Medical supplies and Tinker, why don't you take care of the tools and equipment. .

Michael's brain starts clicking on the things they will need. Tents, cookware, bedrolls food, and the many myriad things a relief party will need He thinks up a lot of stuff but knows that The Mailed Fist, being an organization that lives out in the field a lot of the time, Q will have a pretty detailed accounting of all that will be needed to perform this mission.
It might help if we had an idea how big the village was he thinks to himself as he starts off, he detours to find the two pages, to quiz them out on how big or small this Echo Dwelling is. Once he get the info he will have a better more detailed request for Q.

Michael gets an idea from the boys that the town was somewhere between 50 and 100 people before the tornado struck, but there was at least one death that the boys know of, and there are likely to be more. Pru and Anna go to sweet talk some carpenters, and Michael, Trayvin, and Tinker go to work on Q.

Q enjoys the attention, but it's really the missives from Palance that get her to work gathering supplies.

Meanwhile, Nikolai sees to it that the animals are well prepared for a journey and hopes to be able to channel his father's ability to sit a horse and managed a lance (or standard pole) with grace.

it will take most of the day to prepare everything, so if there are any other things you would like to do at the Citadel, let me know.

With a little time on his hands, Nikolai composes a letter to the leaders of Echo Dwelling telling them of their plans to be there in a few days to help rebuild and names the two pages as their contact. He finds a Fist courier and gives him a gold piece to hand deliver the message to Echo Dwelling and belt pouch with 10gp with instructions to the elders to use the funds as best they see fit. He knows it's not much but it is a start.

With the rest of the time he seeks out Pru and Anna and checks on their progress getting the carpenters ready and spreads the word that all who are going will meet in front of the Last Assignment for some instructions and a drink for their success.

That night, as all are gathered in front of the Mailed Fist tavern, Nikolai explains the situation in Echo Dwelling for those who were unaware of the tornado, and what their mission is. It is a short speech but he emphasizes the importance to show their compassion and goodwill to their neighbors. Then invites all into the tavern for a round of drinks.

The Agents are ever vigilant, ready to protect the caravan and each other. Whether dumb luck, or anything around is scared off by the noise of so large a group, there is nothing that bothers them. There is an easy couple of days of travel before they start seeing evidence of destruction.

A trail is obvious. Half grown crops have been ripped out by gale force winds, which go in a nearly straight line parallel to the road. Soon enough, they come to broken down outbuildings. When they arrive at Echo Dwelling, the town is devastated. The only remaining buildings that provide any sort of shelter are the local church and the House of Lasmark, the town mayor.

Knowledge Religion: 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {The church serves several of the Gods of Wold, with Alemi being primary. }

OOC: that is correct, DM. I thought it was in an e-mail but now I remember it was a post. Nikolai did trade one of the +2 weapons for a +2 kama.

Nikolai mounts up and leads the caravan out the gates, their new banner on a sturdy pole and flapping happily in the brisk breeze. It does not take long for old habits to fall in place and the Fist start their usual routines when out on the road.

Always vigilant, they take strategic places in the caravan. Tinker takes up lookout spot with the last wagon. Michael goes from front to back periodically. Trayvin suggests sending out scouts. Pru sticks close to the two pages. Anna seems to be telling some very interesting tales, unfortunately Nikolai is too busy to stick around to hear the whole thing.

Nikolai suggest to Trayvin to stick with Michael. Going in twos is best. He ponders the idea of sending out scouts but has none really to spare. Tinker will be fine in the back and he suggest to Anna to be prepared to jump to Pru's side.

"We might think things are safe now that the war is over, but we don't have the Wolves of Neutronis chained in a dungeon waiting for trial yet, or any other number of bands that managed to escape and roam around waiting for victims. So keep vigilant," he tells the caravan members. Whether carpenters or teamsters, they are Fist members, so keeping vigilant should not be a problem.

As for himself, he keeps to the front with the banner. He suddenly feels wholly inadequate for the role. His riding skills are adequate for the normal ride, but unlike his father, he's not much good fighting while mounted. He knows everything there is to know about the care of horses, but not how to fight from the saddle.

On a hunch, he has one of the pages carry the Mailed Fist banner. "Take care of it well, guard it with your life. You are the Mailed Fist, the Mailed Fist is you," he solemnly tells the youth

Now, with his hands free, he his crossbow in one hand and ready to leap from the saddle at first sign of trouble.

For him, Shelter is the first thing to work on. Safety comes with their arrival, them just being there boosts the safety of the citizens by ten fold. Food, he hopes, can be scrounged from stores and hunted, and magically produced. But Shelter is not so easy. His mind pictures one big place to house those who's homes are unsafe. To do that, he plans on using the salvaged materials from those homes and buildings that need to be demolished. This large common building will do for shelter as they work on the individual houses.

"In the name of the Mailed Fist, Greetings, Lasmark. I am Thumb Nikolai and my Fist and this corps from the Citadel are here to help. Let us get down to business. Bring your injured to the church where our healers can attend to them. Have your town leaders meet in that sturdy home over there. The mayor tries to respond to the offers of help coming from all sides.
I don't know how the pages even found out about the disaster. The little girl that ran out earlier pipes up, saying that a messenger on his rounds had sheltered in the church with them during the storm, and she stuck an extra letter in his pack and hoped that she wasn't in trouble because she couldn't pay.

Several people are wounded, but the injuries are days old, and limbs are splinted and cuts bandaged as best they could. Unfortunately, one of the casualties was the village priest, so we've had to use what skills we have tending our livestock to try to help the people. We've done the best we could. There are dozens of minor cuts and bruises, and several broken limbs. The worst of the wounded are laid out on pallets in the church.

We are crowded, but everyone has a roof, between my house and the church. Food is the more pressing concern. After that, building sturdier houses will give everyone a sense of security, as the previous structures did not hold up well in the storm. Perhaps the foundation stones of the houses can be used to construct a few sturdier dwellings. Additional houses will need new supplies, but the carpenters will be of good use building pens for the animals once they are recovered.

Pru leads some of the helpers and unwounded villagers into the fields to see what can be salvaged. Much of the crops were destroyed, and herds were scattered, but there is some food that can be salvaged, and it will take some tracking, but perhaps some of the livestock can be tracked down. Anna thinks that she may be of some use here. knowledge nature, prof:farming, or survival

OOC: What's the climate like during this time of the year? Is it mild at night? Chilly? warm?

Nikolai listens to the mayor and understandably people can tolerate crowded condition if they've got food, but even that won't keep tempers from flaring for long.

"Sounds like you've done pretty good considering everything. Here's how we can help. The carpenters will take the usable wood from the unsafe homes and build a temporary shelter to help alleviate the crowded conditions. While your farmers work on repairing their fields and planting again, I'll lead a group into the woods and hunt for game, nuts, and berries. Those of our group that have healing talents will spend as long as they need to make sure those injured will recover and not go septic.

Once the temporary shelter is finished, we'll pick lots who belong to families with small children and rebuild those first. That's good enough a plan to start with and we'll see how far our supplies go. We can also cut trees from the woods for supplies as well.

As far as the food goes, gather up all we can find into one place so we know how much we have. The women can be more efficient in the cooking and distributing ration portions."

Who's the local lord? Has anyone from the his household been by yet?

Knowledge Local +2 = 22! by golee, Nikolai should know who the local lord is!

Nikolai gives the instructions to the carpenters to take what salvageable wood they can collect and build a temporary Common Hall (without sides if necessary) that can put a roof over as many heads as possible and allow some space between families.

The hunting detail would start the next day.

One of the villagers leads Trayvin behind the church, where some 25 bodies have been carefully laid out and covered in sheets, burlap, or whatever sort of shroud was handy. Even the village priest was taken, so we have not been able to properly send their souls to the next world. There is some evidence of a few graves having been begun, but it will take much effort to see the bodies properly cared for. The living are doing well, as the community is used to treating minor injuries to person and animal. A few of the worse injured need extra care though, as there was little available to clean wounds and some have become infected.

Luckily, other than the one freak incident, weather has been mild. It still gets rather cold at night, but the fires and body heat have been able to keep people warm, if not comfortable. No one has contacted the local lord. so no representative has yet been by. It may do to inform him that the taxes this year will be light.

Pru organizes the children of the town and takes them to what was the village green. She shows them seeds that they have brought, and carefully describes how to plant them, spacing, watering, and other care, so that some start can be made on growing some produce.

Michael does his best to organize the supplies and get the engineering teams working. Soon enough, a frame is going up for the first of the reconstructed homes, and a large area is fenced off for corraling the livestock. He is able to find an abundance of berries, nuts, and other forage, but game eludes him for now.

Anna is also able to direct the villagers at gathering, and begins to herd the missing animals back to town. The cows seem more than willing to follow, as days without milking have made them a bit uncomfortable. Some villagers are more than eager to relieve the pressure and fresh milk is soon filling bucket after bucket.

Tinker, ever industrious, takes his own initiative and soon has a well back to working order. He is working on the second before Nikolai thinks to start that project, and he is glad to see it well underway. With livestock returning, the need for water will soon start to stress the limited supply.

Each Agent seems to have found a task well suited to their talents, and a day's good honest work just seems to fly by.

Pru is careful to explain to the youngsters what they're doing and why. "We're planting awful late, so we need to pick things that grow quickly or can be harvested after a frost," she says. "Cabbage is really good, for example. Do you like cabbage?"

When some of the kids agree, she reminds them, "If you want cabbage for you and your family, you have to take really good care of the garden here. Remember to water, and be sure to chase the birds away." She smiles. "Running and yelling will scare most birds off, so me and my brothers and sisters played lots of running and yelling games in the summer. Just be sure not to trample the garden!"

"Now," she moves to the next row. "Carrots are really good, too, because they grow underground so they're protected a little. And you have different kinds of carrot seeds, which is nice. Who likes carrots?"

She continues in that vein, encouraging the kids to think about the tasty dishes they can enjoy later--if they take good care of their garden now.

Whenever he has free time, he digs. His parents and siblings are laborers and he is used to hard work. He digs, takes a break, and then digs some more. He wants to make sure all the bodies get into the ground and are properly given rights as quickly as possible. He says prayers for the deceased while he works. He knows several common ones for most of the deities of the Wold. Pru is reminded of home and family as she shows the children the beginning of "Three Sisters" growing, getting rooted, low vined, and tall vegetables growing in the same patch of soil.

Tinker is enjoying working with his hands, though his second work is not quite as good as the first. One villager has offered his hands, and notices that some of the wood is rotten on this rig, which may be why it's not working as smoothly. He runs off to find some small tools to carve away the rot. Tinker keeps working, but eventually starts to wonder why the man never came back...

Nikolai and Michael are pleased with the results of their trips, regardless of how much they were able to bring back. The villagers seem to be gaining some hope, jesting and laughing, as they were not when the help first arrived. It seems that people are getting back into the swing of their lives.

Anna is not very successful communicating with the cows, but luckily they are not terribly stubborn beasts, and prefer the comforts of home to foraging in the wood. They are not too happy with her, but the promise of grain and a roof brings them back home easily enough, once they are tracked down. The chickens prove a bit more ornery though.

Trayvin does what he can to get the dead properly cared for. As each body is lowered into the earth, he speaks words over them, sometimes guided by family, other times by instinct. On the 3rd burial, he catches out of the corner of his eye a girl that is miming him in his motions and words. She was foremost of the villagers in her efforts to prepare the dead for burial, cleaning their bodies and arranging shrouds, though she could do little to help with labor, as she wore a large splint on a badly broken arm. Trayvin continues to watch her as he works, and a few burials later, as she speaks the words with him more confidently. A glow appears on her hands, and as she brings them together in a sign of peace, the glow moves to her arms and her expression eases, as if a pain long managed is suddenly lifted.

Efforts at gathering continue, and enough is being gathered to supplement the supplies brought by the Fist such that no one will be going hungry for a few weeks at least.

There is no lake nearby, but there is a pond where the locals go to dip their feet. Most of the water comes from the wells. Amazingly, this building is still standing, and his helper is banging on the door. open up, you old drunk, and either help us with repairs, or let us use your tools!

A critical look at strengths and weaknesses is the only way of being better next time. :-). "You remind me of my adoptive father, Jaspertink. He was always experimenting and making notes about everything ", he tells Michael.

Nikolai takes the chief carpenter aside and has him tell the other carpenters to burn in the Mailed Fist symbol on multiple places of each building they work on, including the wells and corrals. "We want no one else to take credit for this. Time has a way to wear away memories. These markings will be a reminder less anyone doubt our word or work."

Before they leave he calls a meeting with the town leaders and congratulates them on their hardy spirit to live and rebuild and asks it anything got missed. He notes those things down and promises that if they can make it back, they'll work on those things if still needed.

He is inclined to leave their tools there, but decides not to, as they may be needed for other reconstruction work in other places as well. One never knows. So he has all the Mailed Fist workers take inventory of their tools and equipment and stored safely away for the return trip.

He relies on Michael's report of the work done and glad he doesn't have to do that tedious job.

The Agents make everything ready for their trip back, inventorying and cataloguing, making sure everything is accounted for. A few of the builders are staying behind to continue with the rebuilding efforts, and even without the emblem being emblazoned upon the new structures, they are sure that the villagers will not forget the efforts of the Mailed Fist to save their town.

Mayor Lasmark gathers the townsfolk to bid the Agents farewell and safe travels. A halfling woman gives the a "true halfling cake" to share amongst themselves on their journey. It is sweet, soaked in honey, and covered in seeds and candied flowers. The girl that was following Trayvin's example runs up to him and hands him a perfect white flower. When he asks where she found it, she says that it came from the graveyard, having sprung up by itself overnight, and something in it seemed to call out to her.

All too soon it seems, the Agents are rolling out of town, waving back over their shoulders at the folk of Echo Dwelling.

Waxing philosophically, he adds to Pru's comment. "For the crops to grow, we need rain. That rain sometimes comes in storms is just part of Life. But these kind of destructive storms, we could all live without." The fact that these people, or most people to be honest, don't have any way to protect themselves from these kind of storms. Anna sees a spark of the divine within the flower, glowing with an inner beauty even more radiant than the perfection of the plant itself. It seems to be a sign of Flower herself.

The cake is perfection itself, despite being a bit messy. Hopefully, Pru's friends will save a portion for her.

Nikolai is already planning for a return trip, hoping to see the villagers prospering again in short order.

Then the fireballs came in, cleaned the goblins off, go forward, rinse repeat. Might be a way to handle mass attacks by weak enemies.
