Eclip may see some faint scuff marks in a light layer of dust on the floor, but nothing conclusive. There likely has been some traffic in the tunnel though. He doesn't spot any obvious signs of traps on the other side either.

Larien replies to Alleah, "As a Conjurer, I have the ability to use a Dimension Door-like ability a certain distance each day. So save your spell for later -- we might need it in the heat of battle. As for your Stone Tell spell, it might give us some useful info -- I don't know." Larien will wait for Alleah to cast her Stone Tell spell or not, and then she'll proceed.

Since Eclip's spell and search turned up no sign of traps, Larien gathers the group together, tells them to be ready to act if needed after the mini-teleport, and uses her Dim steps to transport everyone 40 ft down the corridor past the fake dead-end, using Eclip's directions to ensure they arrive at the proper location (8 party members + Artan = 9 * 40 = 360 ft).

----

Larien will wait for the results of the Stone Tell spell if Alleah casts it, otherwise she'll proceed as noted above, barring any objections from the group. I suggest that party members post Ready actions post-Dim Door, in the event that DM has something waiting for us.

If the Gnome does talk to the other stones they'll tell of drider moving back in forth, but they have little concept of time as they're stuck beneath ground and do know about night and day. They do mention that they were carved out in quick pieces.

I think I'm more concerned about a cave in. How's that for a cheerful topic?" The wizardess smiles in attempt to lessen the tension, before changing the subject slightly.

"On the positive side, I'd expect the driders to be well underground as this passage is headed, possibly tied into some of the old caverns/passages below It'lal. Thee is some sign of driders having passes through the tunnel where you are, but it is nothing recent. Artan only detects an old, stale scent. DM clarification: So there are signs of driders having passed through all the segments of this passage -- the first segment connected to the cavern, the second one we're in now (blocked on either side by foot-thick stone walls), and the third one just ahead (on the other side of the foot-thick stone wall we're facing)? But the only recent activity was in the first segment?

Also, what does "nothing recent" mean? A day? A week? A month? Longer?

Larien thinks about the distance they've traveled so far, and tries to determine if the first passage (after the cavern), and the second passage (blocked on either side by foot-thick stone walls), are roughly the same length. She wonders if this is just a clever way for the driders to burn off many of the group's buff spells, and a few other spells to boot....

There are signs that the driders move about the tunnel at some point, but the exactly passage of time since then is hard to tell in the rather static stone corridor. there is little to disturb any tracks that may have been made, but also little to make tracks in. The best marker of time is that the scent of the driders if far weaker here than it was at the top of the tunnel.

It was a quarter mile of tunnel to the first wall and a half a mile more to this tunnel... given the rather steep downward spiral the group is probably nearly 800 feet below the city.

As for the knife, Larien quietly fills in any details that the veteran members failed to share previously.

For the moment, Larien does not voice an opinion, but this passage is likely either a trap or a wild goose chase. A trap is OK if they can survive it and track the driders to their masters, but what are the odds the driders have made it that easy? The group might be ahead to return to It'lal or perhaps investigate the flowers and fruit from the Crying Woods that were found on Atrea when she died. Maybe the group's reptilian friends in the Crying Woods have heard something of Atrea or the driders lately.

Mithranix would place himself between the casters and the scouts, ready to assault any enemies that closed with his groups. He smiled as he thought of another round of combat, he did love to punish the heretic and the monster...probably made him something close to a monster. "If anyone cares for my opinion, I say we continue on."

He muttered a small prayer, it was a fine line he walked. The bloodlust drove him, but his faith tempered his rage. He smiled...his faith would guide him. It always had.

Quietly discussing their options, Larien notes that blasting through the stone wall would almost certainly trigger the trap (if there is one), and should be avoided.

Elemental-Eclip can skirt around the wall without any problem. Larien can use her Dim Steps to get the rest of the group past the first stone wall again, if everyone can get within seven feet of the wall. If the DM says that's not possible, then Larien could get half the group back using Dim Steps, and someone else can cast a Dim Door to transport the rest. That's the least spell-intensive option, but it means we have to walk back.

Also, someone with Stone Shape could create a connecting passage *around* the first stone wall without disturbing it, and we could skip the Dim Steps/Door approach. This has the advantage of being useable again if we come back this way after talking to the dead driders.

Larien's initial suggested questions boil down to something like this:

* Describe the most direct route to get to the nearest drider camp/base from It'lal.

* Describe the trap(s) in the passage running between the Slaughtered Lamb tavern and the underground river. If the traps are described, ask the driders how they bypass them.

* Ask the drider(s) if they're collaborating with the Green dragons and/or the Crying Woods.

Perhaps the answers to these will prompt more questions. But if others have different questions, then we should prioritize them before Mithranix casts his spell.

Larien's proposals for initial questions (I believe Mithranix gets seven questions, and we want to save a few for follow-ups):

* Are the driders or your drow allies working with the Green (dragons) or the Crying Woods?

Possible follow-up questions:

* Describe the traps in the passage running between the Slaughtered Lamb tavern and the underground river.

* Who are your spies in It'lal? (Perhaps preceded by "How did you know the exact time and table we were eating at in the Slaughtered Lamb, given that they often change from day-to-day")

Larien agrees that Eclips's question about how long the passage took to create would be interesting to know the answer to, but wonders how it would help the group if it took a month to create as opposed to a few days? That recovering the blade is more likely to be the drider's focus in the latter case (although even that would be speculative -- it might be they gave Atrea a chance to kill us, and when she failed they launched a new attempt)?

It is likely that it will try and mislead us."

The warrior priest would then turn his eyes back to the corpse, his mind however would utilize that telepathic link if it was still available to ask a final question of the group...you never want a sneaky enemy to get the better of you because of poor timing. [b]"Are we in agreement on the questions to be asked then? First why the walls were placed, then the quickest route to their kin and allies, and then how they knew where we would be this morning? After that a few more questions and done as done. Know that I can only cast this spell once per corpse. We may need to re-organize our thoughts before the second casting. Yes. Larien frowns when the phrasing of the first two questions lead to little useful information. She suggests these as follow up questions:

* Describe the route from here (the end of the passage under the Slaughtered Lamb) to the drider lair when not using magic.

* Are the driders or your drow allies working with the Green (dragons) or the Crying Woods?

* Describe the traps in the passage running between the Slaughtered Lamb tavern and the underground river.

The wizardess is less sure about the final question. Options:

* How did you get water on your clothes?

* How long did the passage take to create?

It may be wise to cast a second spell on another drider to find out everything we want to know....

Larien does not think a question should be spared for helping the drider find "rest".

For the last question, perhaps:

* Will the driders at the (underground?) lake be expecting the Shadow Guardians to attack them, now that your ambush-attack has failed?

(I think we've already established that the water stains on some of their clothes are days or weeks old, from when they traveled by barge on the river.)

I don't think speaking to one of their dead spellcasters is likely to reveal anything else. Obviously, the passage to the underground river is trapped somehow, but it seems to be the easiest way to reach the drider lair. I vote we go back down the passage while we still have the element of surprise. If we go back up to It'lal, that may be lost."

Larien asks Gilin to use Stone Shape spells to make a small bypass around (not through) each of the two stone walls blocking the passage. That way, the group can return the same way if the barge is missing from the river.

----

Stone Shape can alter 25 cubic feet of stone. Thus, a short u-shaped bypass through the side wall of the passage will allow the group to get around the 1 ft wall without any trouble.

To Mithranix, Alleah, and the others, Larien whispers via Message, "We don't know that the driders are after us because of the blade. We've had several drider encounters in the course of defending It'lal and hunting for Atrea. The remains of the evil drow Houses Torrae (Driders) and Maeurden (Assassins) apparently were working with Atrea after she stole the blade from driders living in caverns under It'lal. We don't know if those driders were with House Torrae or not, just that all of them were killed and their temple-cavern destroyed. But clearly, Atrea was allied with the evil Houses while she possessed the stolen blade. And we believe the evil Houses were directly involved in attacks on villages near It'lal, and in the kidnapping of a drow farm girl (perhaps as part of a larger kidnapping plot), who was rescued by the Shadow Guardians. Regardless of the blade, the remnant Houses seem determined to undermine It'lal however they can."

The perceptive in the group can see what looks to be fray rope fragments on the iron ring, but there is no sign of an invisible boat, even to those that can see that sort of thing. There are some markings that look like they could be from a driders' spider leg.

The river looks big enough for a swan boat, though it might be claustrophobic.

The gas cloud is out of sight for now, but it was still slowly moving downhill when the group outpaced it.

"I wonder it a drider cut the rope for the barge? Eclip, I think it's Swan Boat time. But we better keep a sharp eye out. If one of the driders got away and alerted the others, we need to be prepared for an attack on the water. And with our luck, this river has nasties in it. A water breathing spell might be good for those who don't already have such magic. For me, this Necklace of Adaptation does the trick.

"Should we try tying lengths of rope to the ring to control our travel? Probably we don't have enough rope to be of use though. The group has a Rope of Climbing, but it's cursed -- it plays music loudly when used, which isn't ideal -- and it's only 60 ft long anyway."

Larien looks to see how fast the river is flowing, and for any dangers in sight (outcroppings, stalactites/stalagmites, river-monsters, the usual stuff....). She also secures all her personal items, although everything that's sensitive to water is already in either a water-proof wrapping or a water tight container.

He does take out his Staff to hold, tying its strap securely to his wrist to avoid it being lost in the river, and removes his Glove of Storing, replacing it with his Gloves of Swimming and Climbing, just in case.

"If worst comes to worst, I can probably teleport us all out at a moment's notice, so long as we stay together. Perhaps instead of tying off the boat, we should lash ourselves together to avoid being separated or falling out? I have 50ft of silk rope here..." Gilin suggests. After all, cutting the rope between them is a simple thing if they need to move freely, but if the constricted underwater river is dangerous, being lashed together could save them from the present danger of being taken by the river's current should one of them fall or be knocked overboard from the cramped swan boat...

Larien flies off towards the sound of the noise and the boat turns towards it. Larien is the first to spot the shore and the large barge-like boat tether to the stone. Near the boar is a ramp leading upwards to a small outcropping of rock that in turn has the mouth of a tunnel leading deeper into the rock behind it. No driders are in sight.

Larien alerts the others as to what she's seen. She then draws her staff, casts Shield of Faith on herself, and flies forward another 60 ft toward the tunnel. The wizardess checks to see how big the mouth of the tunnel is (height/width), and tries to do a rough count of tracks or other signs of disturbance to estimate how many driders might have just left the rocky beach. She also takes note of any abandoned equipment or other items, including any on the barge.

The tunnel is fifteen feet wide and high and shows signs of obvious use, so much in fact that it's impossible to tell what activity was most recent. The tunnel goes in to the rock some thirty feet before curving to the left and blocking further sight.

No other driders are visible in the cave, above, below or on the walls. A few mundane items are about. Fishing spears, some nets and the like.

"Those that walk willingly into darkness are not deserving of mercy. Redemptions path is arduous and fraught with temptation, many who would be spared will fall from grace a second time. Is it not better to give them sweet release and allow their souls to petition for forgiveness in the higher realms? A place where temptation cannot reach them? A place where the justice of the divine can sort the truly pentinant from the unclean heretic? I believe it is, it is my duty, my life and my curse to believe it is. Any who have helped these creatures of by their own choice, will recieve no mercy from me."

"So basically kill them all and let the gods work it out? I wonder how many said the same thing about the drow? I understand there are many drow still causing harm to dwarves in the scab today. Should all drow be killed as well just to be safe?" Alleah shakes her head at Mith's comments "Many people simply need to be guided to the path of good, and will then follow on their own. But they cannot be guided with weapons. I will gladly heal and tend to any foe we encounter who has even the slightest possibility of redemption - even if that means putting myself in harms way"

"He is an interesting one" Alleah notes to herself reflecting on Mith "Perhaps he is the one I am here to save?"

Listening to both Alleah and Mithranix, Gio can see both sides of the argument and offers his opinion, "It's been my personal experience that when we initially offer peaceful terms to possible enemies, we are more often than not, rewarded with an attack. "I have walked this road for many many years little sister. Long have a delved into my soul, and I admit that I am hardly worthy of my days spent living. The nectar of darkness is incredibly sweet....intoxicating. It is like the sweetest of wines, a spirit distilled from the foulness of the universe. It is all that you want and more, your selfish desires, the lust of power, the lust of flesh, gluttony, pride...all that makes us truly alive magnified a thousand fold...the dark, deep, honeyed taste of ages. It muddles your thoughts and goads you ever forward. Even after his redemption, a man can taste the deep sweetness of the dark, it will forever linger on his tongue...a droplet of desire with the power of eternity pulling you ever to temptation. I have walked this road a long time little sister...a long time indeed. Through decades spent spilling the blood of those tainted with darkness...I have felt a pull...a tug...even I am not free of that taste."He smiled a sad...but strangely sure thing. It crossed his face slowly as he stood next to his dwarven ally. It was a knowing smile. A sign of what he knew of himself.

"those known as pure of heart...they can claim that title because, none have ever tempted them enough to take their first sip from the goblet of shadow. Have you ever met a man called pure of heart after his redemption? I have not...nor will I ever. It is the nature of evil to forever touch and taint the souls of those creatures it has marked."

"The men of the surface have long had a saying 'He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.' Maybe you believe that I have become like those lost souls that I hunt, but, my mother still reaches to me in my dreams, and those others who believe truly in their own light...they still hire me and those like me. Does that make me the monster? Or simply the tool, the blade?"

Whispering herself, the still-invisible wizard says via Message, "With respect Alleah and Asvora, you haven't dealt with driders before, and what they've done to our city and people. They attacked us again without provocation, and thinking they will change their ways now seems like badly misplaced piety. But if you wish to try your way first, get going.
