Character: Feng
Player: Walter Witcraft Campaign: Windhorn Hamlet Classes: Paladin Race: Half-Orc Gender: Male Age: 18 Height: 6’ 5” Weight: 238lbs Hair: Short cut black hair that is neatly combed at all times. |
Appearance
Feng might be another big burly half-orc, but he is not typical half-orc. He is well dressed and mannered at all times. He stands tall and proud smelling of soap or cologne. His breastplate armor is polished and well kept. His dark cloak perfectly matches the armor. Feng is often smiling, showing his bright white teeth, even under bad circumstances.
Personality
Feng is vain and compulsive about it. He cannot stand being dirty or looking unkempt. Feng believes in the side of good and the righteous. It is extremely hard for him to lie, even if that means there will be an increased chance of his death. He doesn’t like it when the rest of his companions lie but they control their own fate. He tolerates it because they do good work.
History
Feng traveled without a specific destination, but some instinct seemed to guide him towards the vicinity of Plateau City. On the way there, he came across a band of orcs on the verge of robbing an elderly gnome and his wife. Though it was hard siding against his own blood, Feng charged in and defended the couple against the marauders, managing to drive the bandits off. The old man was gravely hurt, and Feng was beside himself in trying to help the gnome before the elderly man died of his wounds. The wife bid Feng to try placing his hands on the wounds and invoke the mercy of the gods upon her husband--and when Feng did so, he was heartily surprised to find that the old gnome was suddenly, completely healed!
Not only that--but both "gnomes" were suddenly human...and not so old...and joined by the band of "orcs", who were also suddenly human. Feng's bewildered eyes noticed that the "orcs" were now all armored--and bearing the same symbols on their shields that Feng had on the breastplate he'd found!
The man who'd been the "gnome" introduced himself as Roderick, captain of a group of like minded paladins. They weren’t an official organization or dedicated to any one Woldian deity, nonetheless banded together in an effort to promote defense of the weak and other actions of Goodness. Apparently Roderick had been visited by a vision of some sort that told him there was a candidate for paladin hood on their way towards Plateau City--and all of them were rather pleasantly surprised to see that it turned out to be Feng. Never before had a half-orc ever passed the initial test with such valor and compassion.
They offered Feng membership in their group, and he accepted gladly, spending the next four years or so training and studying at the outpost located just north of Plateau City. It was while Feng was at the outpost that Domi fell to the deceitful hand of the evil Dark Lord. This was quite a blow even to the group of paladins, since just about all them were very favorably inclined towards the god of courage and honor. Then came the day that Roderick came to Feng.
"You have grown in prowess and wisdom, my brother," Roderick told Feng, "But now the time has come to let The Wold know that paladins come in more than just human packages...there is a mission that you, as a half-orc, will be particularly suited to carry out..."
Roderick quickly explained that they were allied with the secret Security Forces of Plateau City, which was run by a human named Marcus. Marcus the Spymaster was totally dedicated to upholding the lawful goodness of Plateau City, but was coming across more and more evidence of plots against not just the good mayor Sturtavent, but also the City and--more incredibly--even The Wold itself. Marcus had need of trustworthy operatives who could disguise themselves as unsavory types and ferret out the myriad nebulous plots. Feng--being one of the best paladins in the outpost, as well as having orc blood in him--would be a most suitable undercover operative, since just about everyone would assume that Feng tended to favor evil over good. Roderick didn't order Feng to join Marcus's undercover force, but asked him to think about it carefully.
Even as Feng mulled over Roderick's suggestion, something else happened in Plateau City: Lord High Mayor Sturtavent and Oratai, the head of the temple of Alemi, were revealed to be gold and silver dragons and nearly executed by the City Council. Feng knew that metallic dragons were always good dragons, and, as such, had not done anything to deserve summary execution.
Feng set out for Plateau City the very next morning.
Marcus readily accepted the half-orc into his security force and warned Feng that he had a particularly difficult task for the paladin: to disguise himself as a half-witted orcish fighter whom the Dark Lord's forces would not hesitate to hire on as extra muscle for assassinations. Marcus needed to keep an eye and ear out for any plots to kill or ambush the other security operatives, and this would be a prime opportunity to do so if Feng was willing. Feng agreed and Marcus supplied the paladin with a Hat of Disguise.
When Feng put it on and concentrated, he looked like a really ugly, dirty half-orc fighter...and Marcus was right--Feng wasn't even one whole hour by himself at a seedy bar when a furtive agent of the evil Martaeus recruited him to join the ranks of the Dark Lord's minions.
Feng hated to do it but he hated the dark lord even more. Appearing as he did, Feng barely kept himself from getting sick. It was difficult but Feng believed it to be a test from the gods. One test which he passed. By infiltrating the enemy, Feng learned of an assassination attempt against the heroes of the Windhorn Hamlet. He couldn’t hide anymore. Feng revealed his true self when he turned on his supposed friends’ right before the ambush started. Even with Feng switching sides the battle was still hard fought. In the end they succeeded and none of the heroes from the Windhorn Hamlet were killed.
Initially Feng didn’t intend to stay with the heroes, but Marcus went missing. Regardless of what he thought of their methods, the greater good was more important. Undead and evil seemed to find them and Feng was more than happy to put them down. During the search for Marcus Feng realized that how ever unlikely, this was where he belonged. He was doing more good with the heroes from Windhorn Hamlet than he was on his own.
