Your own oak cudgel or unshod quarterstaff sprouts small magical thorns and spikes. When you cast Blackthorn, you choose one of two options: the more potent version lasts one minute per level, and the less potent lasts one hour per level.
In the less potent version, magical thorns and spikes give the weapon an enhancement bonus of +1 per four caster levels (maximum +5) on attack and damage rolls. The weapons base damage also increases as if it were two size catagories larger (ie: a small Blackthorn is 1d8, a medium Blackthorn is 2d6, and a large Blackthorn is 3d6). If the spell targets a quarterstaff, the bonuses apply to both ends. Targeted weapon becomes a bludgeon and piercing weapon while the spell is active and held by the caster. This version lasts one hour per level.
In the more potent version, the same benefits apply, but in addition, the threat range of the weapon is extended to 18-20/2x. This version lasts one minute per level. This increased critical threat range does not stack with any other effects that enhances critical threat ranges, such as the Keen Edge spell or the Improved Critical feat. Moreover, after this version of the spell is over, the weapon twists and roots into the ground, becoming a five-ft.-by-five-ft. thorny briar bush.
If you do not personally wield the weapon, the thorns and spikes retract, and the weapon behaves as if unaffected by this spell. Once returned to the casters hands, the spell immediately takes affect. The material component is small thorn.
