A New Threat Rises
A letter from Plateau

DM RobC - Oh what a beautiful morning!
Monday May 1st, 2017 7:32:07 AM

As the season changes from Spring to Summer, time passes peacefully for the heroes. Some days are spent lazily watching over the Tree. Other days have mild excitement such as catching thieves, protecting residents from hostile animals, and dealing with minor cases of sunburn. Most days it's just relaxing and interacting with the permanent residents of the Tree.

All in all, life is pretty good.

This week starts like the many that preceeded it. The sun rises in the east to a clear morning sky. As the party sit down to enjoy a hearty breakfast in the Treetop Tavern you can hear the sound of merchants arriving by the base of the Tree. Ciyradyl no longer charges the party for ay food or drink. The security the party provide (and the business they drum up) are more than enough.

When the party have had their fill there's a call of "Headsup!" A smiling Ciyradyl tosses a shiny red apple to Osul "Fresh off the tree. Enjoy!"

The party have become minor celebrities around the Tree and, outside, many merchants try and hawk their wares to you.

"This here's a pound of tobacco fresh from Cinnamon Valley. Here, smell this? Mmmm... this is the good stuff, let me tell you. Only 1gp and you'll have all the halfling leaf you'll need"
"Linen! Linen for sale! Brand new colours in stock just in time for summer! Don't be seen in last season's clothes. Buy from Theron - the name you can trust"
"Feeling thirsty folks? I've got ale straight from the dwarven halls in the Scab. Don't waste your money on any of that elven water, try Bruagh's Ale today!"
"Weapons sharpened! Come to Urghat's and .. uh, what was it again? Er, come to Urghat's! I sharpen things!"

An endorsement from the heroes of the Tree could mean a lot of gold to some of these people. Then again, endorsing a less than perfect product could see some angry consumers.

Two individuals stand out from the crowd. An unusual pairing of a minotaur and a halfling. They don't look to have any wares for trade and are largely keeping to themselves. A curious pair to say the least.

OOC: Folks, please welcome Clint and Korbi to the game. This week will be some downtime for you all to finish levelling, complete any Catacombs shopping, do some crafting, and otherwise just hang out at the Tree. Next week the module kicks into gear so make sure your PC sheets are ready to go before then.

Atlas laughs at 'Osul's comment. "Oh yeah! I was sure that putting that bag of holding in your handy haversack was going to cause a planar rift to open up and swallow all of us. I guess those tales they tell around the camp fires are not as real as they seem. Much appreciated! I'd be happy to hold stuff if folks need. And Armand, I appreciate the offer! I'm just thinking that if I need my bow or the crossbows then I'm more likely to need them quickly. I still prefer to be up front though, no worries!"

Upon noticing minotaur and halfling Atlas decides to approach them. He has been looking for some more muscle for the group since Carver left. The minotaur could fit the bill, so he puts on his best smile and walks over, "Welcome to the Tree of Parting! My name is Atlas Sunowl and I'm a resident here. You two are standing out like a soar thumb compared to the normal merchants and travelers and that makes me curious. Can I help you with anything in particular? I would be happy to show you around or answer any questions you might have? Oh, look at that, a few of my friends seem to have noticed as well. They're probably coming to drag me away so I don't start any trouble." Atlas winks at them as he finishes up his introduction.

OOC I can take 20 to spell craft them. I assume I would have done that over the intervening time. That would give me a 26. Shane would have to let us know 1-what they are, 2-if they can be used since they seem to be 1 lens each.

Having discovered that no one has ever heard of a hammer called "Crusty Jim" Armand decides to sell it. It really does not fit him, he doesn't see himself as one to have a hammer depositing acid on everything.

Still he considers, some form of hammer, might be useful. Maybe some better armor as well. Things he ponders on as Summer approaches.

Armand regularly walks about the caravans as they approach. So he watches Atlas as he approaches, the two who are obviously not merchants.

Beordir's life during the spring has been relaxing. Whilest he still occasionally needs to walk the Arboreal Path, he is much more cautious not to go far or get lost. He's usually back with three days.

He's slowly settling in. He's got a room instead of the tent he frequented first. Beordir spends quite a bit of time in study every day.

The caravan arrives, and Beordir bestirs himself to peruse their wares. He's not very good at hiding his interest, but he tries. After a moment, he notices Atlas talking to some....not merchants. I wonder what that's about.

A brown haired elf in a green doublet, and stained linen trews walks over to the newcomers armed only with a long fighting dagger. His right arm bears several purple sigils with a wisp of orange at his elbow. His left still has several faded green lines across it.

He waits a moment, gauging the cadence of the conversation.

"Atlas, last time I looked there was an efficient quiver in the mix - good for your bolts!?"

The apple makes a solid THOK at it lands in 'Osul's hand. "Thank you Ciyradyl!", is quickly followed by a crisp, juicy CRUNCH. "Ciyradyl, where 'bouts did you get this? Guys, you should get one of these!"

He is garbed in travelers attire under thick varigreen robes which on closer inspection have embroidered animals and plants of many types. Human auburn hair rolls over the top of the robes, and does little to hide bright green eyes. In his left hand is a darkwood staff (or quarterstaff, or both?).

He see the newcomers and thinks to himself, *Twins?*

Pym Haventhorn (Clint B)
Monday May 1st, 2017 7:15:34 PM

Standing before you is a short, 3' 1", halfling man. His brown hair and eyes only seem light because of his deep tan.

Pym stands in amazement as he takes in the sights and sounds of this bustling tree. "Wow, the Tree of Parting! It's better than Captius could have ever described... I doubt he has ever been here..." Pym trails off into ramblings about what he had learned about the tree.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Pym, Pym Haventhorn. Glad to meet you!" He holds out his little hand with a flourish of his cloak. "The tales of ole are in need of a little revision if I do say so myself. What do you do here good sir? I, myself am a master gleeman."

Still holding his hand out, Pym looks around continuing to take in the sights. "Did I hear someone mention Halfling leaf?"

OOC: Still trying to figure out how to get my character sheet loaded up and a header. Sorry about that. Please extend me a little learning curve grace.

"Did someone say Apple? And halfling leaf?" I suddenly appear out of nowhere, licking my lips. :D

"Well, glad to meet a fellow halfling here, Pym! I'm Ramak, but my friends just call me Mack"

DM RobC - Step right up!
Tuesday May 2nd, 2017 7:12:09 AM

Osul is appreciative of the apple and even asks it's whereabouts "A group of dwarves and a very pale woman were in here not long ago. She had a few apples with her and we accepted them as a trade" is the response he gets.

Armand walks amongst the caravans. The merchants see him and call even louder to try and draw his attention to their particular stalls. Alas, 'Crusty Jim' is destined to be sold.

Atlas is the first to approach the distinct strangers with Beordir in tow. The merchants pay little attention to them, realising a sale is looking unlikely.

The distinctive halfling introduces himself with a flourish - Pym Haventhorn, "master gleeman".

The minotaur stands and looks over the gathering, no yet saying a word.

Pym and Mack both ask aloud about halfling leaf, and very quickly the merchant pushes his way through to the pair

"That's right! Halfling leaf! Those halflings in Cinnamon Valley grow the best tobacco in the entire Wold, and this here is no exception. Have a look at these leaves. Well dried and hardly crumbled. You can't get fresher than this!" the salesman leans in closer to Pym and Mack "And you just know the ladies like a man with a husky voice"

Pym Haventhorn (Clint B)  d20=15 ;
Tuesday May 2nd, 2017 9:18:16 AM

Pym, excited to see another halfling, turns and looks up to meet Mack. "Mack good sir, it's a pleasure to meet you. The name is Pym Haventhorn, of the Windhorn Haventhorn's." Holds out his hand, but turns it into a cheerful hug.

Nudging Mack with an elbow"You hear this guy? Halflings leaf from the Cinnamon valley. What do ya say, lets give it a go. My treat?"

Turns towards the merchant, Pym pats his belt pouch and clears his throat. Trying to give himself a little bit of a "husky voice." "The last leg of our journey to "The Tree" has run me dry on my tobac. Its been a long time since I've enjoyed some halflings leaf." Pym leans in to try and give it a smell. "What do you say sir, the first taste is free? I am all out and would love to fill up my belt pouch, but I wanna make sure my good friend and I will enjoy it. Pym again pats his belt pouch and gestures with his head towards Mack.

I don't know if this works like this but I rolled for a diplomacy with the merchant. I am +14 to diplomacy. The dice roller rolled a 15, so Diplomacy of 29?

"Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl, there is a significant difference between "fresh off the tree" and ...", 'Osul falls silent. As he intends to continue frequenting the Tree Tops Tavern (if only for the map), there is no point pursuing this discussion further. Not here and now, at least.

"Hi Pym! ...and..." he looks to the Minotaur.

If so, I think we'd be willing to put you and your friend up in our place tonight and maybe even share a few tales of our own. I'm no gleeman, but when you live like we do it makes it impossible not to share some of it."

Being a hugger, I gladly return the hug.... and definitely accept the offer to share some halfling leaf! :)

"I'm not sure what a gleeman is, but I hope it's some type of bard. We lost our last bard. He was pulled up into the sky by an elderly female ghost centaur. I'm sure he's fine though. I hope our next bard fares better." ;)

Seeing how everyone is stumped on what those Lenses are, I take a look myself as well. ;) What is that? Knowledge (Arcana)? I take 20.

Stretching high on his tip toes, Pym shake Atlas hand. "There's a tavern?

Pyms eyes get wide and looks over at the Minotaur"See Drogeos, I knew this was the right place to go"

Getting back on the balls of his feet and turns back to Atlas "I would love to hear of the grand adventures you have been up to. I am always looking for new tales to tell as we travel along. My teacher, Captius, knew many tales, some taller than others, but they do great at the taverns we have visited so far."

Turning to Mack as he hears about the possible demise of the last bard. "Ghost.. pulled up into the sky... centaur?" Looking between the group that is there. "What have you all been up to?

Inner monologue "This is the right place to be."

OOC: I hope my header comes through correctly, if its messed up I am still figuring things out.

Armand wanders among the merchants keeping an eye and an ear on the newcomers. "No that's not quite right..... That looks interesting, but can you tell me who the author was?" Armand is persuing the wares looking for a book or two or three to put on the library shelves. He is not limiting himself to just the dry stuff that would have interested Owen, but to fiction, history, and the like...should he find it interesting.

The newcomer may notice a tall young man wandering around the merchants. He is dressed in grey robes, but there are some colors there as well, though more along the somber darker hues.

PS OOC Atlas you need to unmodify your header. ;0

"A gleeman, hunh. He'll fit right in." Beordir takes a moment to introduce himself to the new halfling. He's a bit distracted with the shorted Warden. Beordir leaves them to get better acquainted.

Looking over to his fishing pole, he reluctantly turns toward the timid minotaur....Drogeos. I think is what Pym said.

Noticing that Beordir is scoping out his fishing gear. "You like to cast out much? I grew up on Dragon Bay fishing with my pa. There doesn't happen to be any good ponds near by that you like to fish in?"

Pym searches out his personal belongings for his pipe.... Turning back towards the merchant. "It seems I have lost my pipe in my travels... You don't happen to have one for sale?"

DM RobC - Anyone for a smoke?
Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 8:30:28 AM

Osul is a bit way about the apple now. If it helps, the lady that brought it in kept talking to a bluebird, whilst the dwarves kept on whistling.

Atlas greets the newcomer, inviting him to the tavern to spin a tale or two.

Beordir stays silent, still a little unsure about this minotaur.

Mark is glad to see a bard come around the tree. He explains what happened to the last bard that hung around the party. It was going well until that whole ghostly centaur thing too.

Pym welcomes the sight of another halfling. He and Mack look over the merchant with the tobacco for sale. Pym's diplomacy may not have worked, but on tapping his purse Pym can also see the merchant's eyes glaze over "A sample? A FREE sample? My good sir, were it anyone else I would be offended and look to the next customer. But you, my fine halfling friend, are obviously extremely well travelled and of discerning taste. Allow me to pack a pipe for you, such that you may inhale the sweet smoke and be amazed"

The merchant guides both Pym and Mack to his stall, where he stuffs a pipe and holds it out to you (along with a tindertwig).

If you 'inhale' ... Highlight to display spoiler: {The smoke from the leaf is quite strong, and the smell reminds you of the open fields by the halfling houses in Cinnamon Valley. It seems very likely this leaf is from there}

Armand looks amongst the merchants for a vendor for a book stall. He does find one merchant with a few books. No more than a dozen. It would seem good books are hard to find outside of the larger cities. He looks amongst the books and sees a few titles that sound interesting: "How to make friends and kill them", "The 7 habits of highly effective goblins", "Dwarves are from granite, Elves are from wood", and "Eat, Pray, Kill".

Drogeos (Korbi)
Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 8:39:38 AM

The pretty huge minotaur is standing all alone and seems to be daydreaming. His brown fur is fuzzy and he looks a bit exhausted from the travels.

"You could be right, Pym. I'm really looking forward for some beverage after the long trip." But Pym isn't standing next to Drogeos anymore. So Drogeos starts to look around for his small friend.

"There you are, little one. What should we... Oh you already made new friends? Again?" Drogeos sighs, starts to laugh deeply and shakes his head. "You really are one of a kind"

"Greetings to all of you. My name is Drogeos. "

OOC: Sorry for being so inactive these past days. I really underestimated the aftermath of a wedding, especially if you are the one who changed his name.

He was almost looking forward not to be seeing pale folk (in particular pale ladies) but this is something else. He asks Beordir, "can you see a pale skinned lady and half-a-dozen dwarves over there?".
Meanwhile, he tries to determine if he is drugged or poisoned. {Heal: 29, less any penalties for attempting to diagnose oneself whilst potentially under the influence of drugs or poison} Either way, he now has a very firm grip on the apple.

Armand walks over to the Minotaur that Atlas was standing near. "Hi, you look like a sturdy fellow. Could you help me tote these books up the Tree? I'll buy you a beer in the Inn for your troubles.

Armand looks at the Minotaur. "Oh, sorry, my name is Armand. Please don't let these garments dissuade you, as you know Lord Gargul will take everyone in their time, I am but a simply cleric of Gargul trying to oversee his will."

Pym inhales the halfling leaf, lets the heavenly aroma take him in. As he slowly exhales he remembers the first time he tried his pas pipe. With a wide eyed grin. "Good sir, I'll take it. DM RobC - "Hey Atlas, give me a hand here."
Thursday May 4th, 2017 7:10:22 AM

Osul is starting to panic about the apple. He doesn't feel any different. His temperature is fine, his vision is clear, his breath is ... surprisingly good. It really was just a delicious red apple.

Beordir doesn't understand what all the fuss is about, but tells Osul he can in fact see a woman with dark hair.

Pym and Mack both partake of the halfling leaf. It really is quite good. Pym looks to buy some leaf, some tobacco, and some tindertwigs. The merchants smile gets even larger "Tell you what, you can have the pipe for free. My gift to you. The leaf is 1gp a pound, and the tindertwigs are 1gp each. How much would you like?" The merchant has a total of 5 pounds of tobacoo for sale and 20 tindertwigs.

Armand offers 25gp for the entire book collection. The elderly shoeless merchant smiles kindly and speaks with a raspy voice. "Thankyou, oh thankyou. It's rare to find someone as interested in books as I am. Why, I must have read each of them ten times over. It's good to see these going to someone who will appreciate them. I recommend 'Warrd and Peace' if you have the time". He extends his frail hand to collect the coins.

Drogeos laughs a deep booming laugh as he introduces himself. Atlas and Mack introduce themselves to the newcomer, while Pym recalls someone mentioning something about a tavern?

It is still early in the morning, but morning tea could be nice (or as the halflings call it: second breakfast).

Beordir isn't one to miss out on a good meal. He packs away his things and plans to meet everyone in the tavern.

Mack has a gleam in his eye as he heads off to the Catacombs.

Armand beckons for the newcomers to join them in the Treetop Tavern, while Atlas helps carry his books for him.

Pym and Drogeos are all too happy to join the party for a drink or two - even if it is mid-morning.

On his second bite of the apple, Osul chews it a little more carefully. It still tastes good but he will probably keep his eyes open for the pale woman.

Ciyradyl is happy to see the party return to the tavern. "Ooohh, who're your new friends?" she asks Atlas, as she gestures the group towards a table. She pulls out a chair gor Pym "I'm Ciyradyl and welcome to the Treetop Tavern. Whether you're just passing through or staying on a little longer, I'm sure we can find something for you here"

There aren't any chairs big enough for Drogeos up here, but there are piles of blankets placed around for taurs (minotur, centaur or linotaur) to make themselves comfortable upon.

The tables have already been cleared and cleaned from breakfast, and Ciyradyl stands ready to hear if the party have any orders to place.

Atlas sweeps Ciyradyl up in a big hug, but puts her back down quickly so she doesn't start swatting him. "Ciyradyl, I know it has been a bit boring of late and you're sick of us, but I believe that these two are an omen." Atlas doesn't hide his word. In fact, he speaks a bit louder to ensure Pym and Drogeos here him.

"Tonight we're going to wine and dine these two and convince them that we're a good group with a worthy cause that they should consider joining. Once they agree the clouds will part, the sun will shine down through that window right there" Atlas points to a window across the room, ignoring that the sun is already shining through it. "and a magical elf will appear with a quest to save the world. We'll happily take on the challenge now that we have some additional support. Mark my words!"

Atlas smiles and winks at Ciyradyl before moving back over to Pym and Drogeos. "Have whatever you would like, it is on us. Now as you can tell, I've got some high hopes for you two. Let's ensure you don't let us down by being evil or anything crazy like that." And with that Atlas starts in with the typical 'get to know you' questioning and conversation.

Pym smiles a wry smile towards Atlas. "That's a grand story you're telling there Atlas. Next are you going to tell us that you have found the Battle Torc of Barratore Steelwind? Why don't you sit back and let a master gleeman tell you a tale of the ages." Pym picks up his mug of ale and drinks it down.

Pym climbs on the table and begins to weave the tale of how Marteaus claimed his seat at Mount Bone in Izen. He continues to tell of how he united all humanoids across the lands for his reign. Just as he is about to go on, he pauses.. "I do believe that is where I shall leave off, but don't worry folks we will be staying here for sometime. I have many tales to tell, many a song to sing. Some grand that shaped the world, and some small but full of joy and laughter."

Climbing off the table Pym looks at Atlas smiles and winks. "Lets eat!"

Drogeos greets the tavern owner and requests an ale and some meat. Ciyradyl, always friendly, smiles warmly and places her hand on Drogeos' shoulder "For a growing lad such as you, I'll see we get some pig freshly roasted on a spit. And you put that coin purses away. If you're a friend of the heroes here, you eat and drink for free"

Atlas greets her with a big hug, delcaring the two newcomers to be a good omen. He even tries to see into the future, forecasting a sunny day tomorrow and a magical elf quest. Ciyradyl swats at Atlas with a dishcloth and jests "If they keep you in line it will be magic enough"

Ciyradyl looks somewhat confused by Mack's order "Cocktrice soup? A belt of dexterity? Why, did you take a few blows to the head, Mack?" she grins and shakes her head, well aware of Mack's sense of humor.

Beordir stays somewhat silent in the group. He orders a mead but nurses it slowly.

Pym starts to spin a tale. It does draw the attention of others in the tavern, but Pym doesn't see many smiling faces. If anything, the patrons look unnerved. Though none of the gods have an alignment, per se, Marteus is generally agreed to be 'bad'. Ciyradyl forces a smile, and then looks to the somewhat silent crowd "Oh relax. He's just talking about history. He's not a Carrier" Highlight to display spoiler: {Nice job on your Wold history though. I'm impressed!}

The party all soon settle in for the day. Tales are told and stories are swapped. The tavern sees a good deal of patrons, as many come by simply to see the heroes.

Things go well into the night with Ciyradyl ensuring mugs do not stay empty for long. She offers two of her better rooms to Prm and Drogeos free of charge.

--------------------------------------------

The next morning the group regather at the tavern for breakfast. Ciyradyl has already prepared some smoked meats, eggs, fruits and breads at your usual table.

"About time you lot woke up" she declares and then follows on with a whisper "You've got a visitor"

Standing by the window, in the sunlight, stands a tall elf. He is looking out the window with his hands clasped behind his back. Though you can't see his face he seems to be in a good mood, as he is whistling quite a tune as he rocks on his feet.

Upon seeing the elf he startles and loses his balance, falling backwards in the chair. It topples to the ground with a loud noise as he just barely escapes total embarassment by catching himself on the way down. He bends over and picks up the chair and replies to Pym, "Did I forget to mention my knack for premonitions?" He almost pulls off the deadpan delivery, but at the end he bursts out with a laugh. "OK, maybe I got lucky. Either way, lets talk to our visitor so you and Drogeos can see how it works being part of this group."

Instead of walking over to the elf, Atlas looks around the table. His eyes land on Armand, "Rock, hammer, saw on who gets to talk to him?" As he says this Atlas begins to stand as if he's about to sneak over to the elf before Armand has a chance.

Pym seems genuinely impressed by Atlas' forecast. He takes a seat at the table with the party, eyeing the feast ahead of him.

Atlas is in shock at the accuracy of his premonition. Of course, if it is to be truly accurate - the elf would bestow upon the party a magical quest to save the entire Wold!

Drogeos isn't in the mood for talking. The smoked meats smell delicious. And is that bacon?

Mack doesn't wait and tucks into the food. When he has had his fill he plays a tune on his banjo, giving the rest of the party some breakfas music.

Beordir and Armand approach the mystery elf, offering him greetings.

The elf turns to face the pair. His auburn hair is slicked back, his face clean and clear, and his eyes green like the leaves on the Tree. His tunic and pants are in excellent condition - likely tailored specifically for him. By his side hangs a silver rapier. He wears some sort of insignia on his chest

The elf reaches across the table and helps himself to some bread and fruit

"Now let's see, Mack, Osul, Atlas, and ... Hmm... I was expecting Leskni and Carver. You two I don't know" He proceeds to butter the bread and take a huge bite out of it. "mmmbigfnsoygg" he swallows his bite "Pardon me, I'm a big fan of all of you guys. Can I get some water over here please? I tell you, the water is so fresh around here"

Armand gets the impression that this elf isn't hostile in the least. He seems a little scatterbrained, but not hostile.

Armand excuses himself for a moment to get a few supplies. He is back almost straight away.

Drogeos and Pym introduce themselves and invite Miles to share some food with the party. Miles smiles as he keeps chewing on some bacon.

The mood changes with the rest of the party as they realise Miles is from Plateau City. All questions turn to the same topic: Gaston.

Miles smiles and nods, as he takes a sip of water to wash down the bacon. "Mmm... I can see why you all like this place so much. The food is delicious! Hey, anyone know what is on the menu for lunch here? I tell you, the last time that.. No, wait. Business first." Miles wipes his mouth on the back of his hand and once he has everyones attention begins his tale.

"Right, so this is what I heard. That guy you mentioned, Gaston? Well, apparently he went after you guys recently. Like I have to tell you that! Anyway, he had to borrow pretty heavily to finance it. The way I hear it, he called in every favor, used every bribe, and pretty much spent every last copper piece he had to go after you. You really have to tell me that story by the way. He got pretty desperate after that. Hey, can someone pass the fruit?"

Miles takes a couple of apples and some grapes and continues eating.

"Where was I? Oh that's right. Noone really tells me much, but the word on the street is that Gaston tried to double-cross some rich guy on a business deal. Boy, out of all the people you don't want to mess with, Count Highreach would top the list. Anyway, Gaston was arrested on some minor charge. But the Count dropped a story - and between you and me, probably some gold - in the right ear and now Gaston is facing a whole bunch of charges. Murder, attempted murder, defamation of character, theft, assault. The list goes on. You've almost got to feel sorry for the guy. He's a goner. I mean, I once heard about this other guy..." Drogeos has most certainly heard of Plateau City - the largest city on the peninsula. What direction it is from here escapes him though.

Pym and Drogeos are still a little in the dark as to who Gaston is. Perhaps someone might give them a brief summary?

Osul lectures Mack on the finer points of being a GreenMage. He has a conversation with a grape and listens very carefully to it, but all he hears is a little wine.

The question remains though - why is Miles here?

"Oh, yeah, right...I forgot...I was supposed to bring you these letters" he hands a letter addressed to each of you "I think I’m supposed to say 'you have now been served' or something after I give them to you. Plateau city wants you to come as witnesses for the defense in Gaston's trial"

"Well this will certainly be interesting, though we certainly can't answer to all the charges against Gaston, and we certainly aren't going to exaggerate or lie to help the prosecution." He turns to Atlas. "Does that make you the star witness? I mean aren't you the only one of the original members to have encountered Gaston each time?"

Armand turns to 'Osul and Mack. "Mack you joined about the time I did, didn't you? 'Osul, when did you join this merry little band?"

Ciyradyl comes over and sets a package on the table along with some fresh beer.

"Oh look, my order is in already, certainly must say the Catacombs is on top of things right now."

Armand opens the box and slips on two rings, one on each hand. He then lifts a warhammer out of the box. He sets it on the table with a satisfying thunk as he moves the wooden delivery box to the floor. Perception 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { The thunk of the hammer seemed heavier than it should, almost as if the thing were made from something more solid than steel.}

He turns back to Drogeos and Pym. "Have you got a few hours? I mean I've only encountered Gaston recently. Back here at the Tree. Most anyone in the Tree can attest to what went on then. Suffice to say he came to the Tree under false pretenses trying to set up a trade agreement with some Drow, in an attempt to make us look bad and then charge the us and the Tree with incompetence and what not. And in the process attempt had a drow assassinated and replaced. In fact our butler was one of the people in his service. We should probably bring him along as well because he can certainly attest to Gaston making deals with certain unsavory types. Hmm, I guess that means we'll need to be sure to protect him, maybe he'll turn into the star witness."

DM RobC - "This Gaston guy sounds like a real worm, and needs to be put away or down"

Pym doesn't recall hearing the name of the Count before. It's not surprising however. There are many minor members of nobility, owners of land and those that even give themselves fancy titles. With Plateau City being the largest city on the peninsula, there would likely be dozens upon dozens of nobles there.

Miles continues eating, but his chewing does slow down as he watches Mack light up a smoke (using the letter he was just given). "Really? You guys would give me a tour of the Culverwoord? That sounds amazing!" He doesn't seem to have understood what Mack was implying.

The feedback from the party is also mixed.

"I'm confused. I'd have thought you'd be happy to see him locked away for good. Who knows? He may even be hung for his crimes. I mean, you may not necessarily be witnesses of the crime he is accused of now, but other crimes you may have witnessed him committing. I think having heroes such as yourselves acting as character witnesses would give weight to the prosecution"

Miles takes another drink of water from his mug.

"I’ve been instructed to also provide you with this should you agree to come" Miles presents the party with a small purse. Inside is 50gp, a few small rubies and a signet ring. It is encrusted with a few small diamonds in the shape of the letters 'G L'.

Miles addresses a point raised by Pym "You wouldn't even have to go to the court. Just provide your testimony in person to the clerk and that's it. You can spend the rest of the time enjoying all that Plateau City has to offer. If you wish to stay for the trial you would be more than welcome, of course."

Atlas comes out of his silence, more serious than anyone has probably ever seen him. His voice is steady, but there is no hiding the anger within, "It's a trap, but we have to go spring it if we're going to kill him. I know we've become like family over time, but I don't expect the rest of you to walk into this with Mack and I. Gaston is our problem, and to be completely honest, you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing him and will likely screw up our murdering him. He is not human, he is pure evil. People are dead because we have let him go too many times due to party members that had sympathy and had to 'see it for themselves' to believe that he is evil. I won't let that happen again. Gaston is going to die by my hands and so I'm going to Plateau City to take care of that. If you're on board great, but don't bring your high and mighty justice with you. This is a mission to destroy evil, not save a lost soul. Pack your bags, we leave today."

Atlas looks over at Pym and Drogeos, "I'm sorry, this is the not introduction I had hoped for when I came over to speak with you initially. Let me give you the short story now and I'll give you all the details when we're on the road.

"Back when Mack and I arrived at the Tree we had a run in with Gaston. He was sent on some quest as he tried to buy his way into the Chancers Club. He hired us to accompany him and speak of his deeds. I don't know where to begin and end with this one. Let's just say that he thinks he is better than everyone and he boasts about how great he is all the time, but when it comes to actually fighting, he is a pure coward. He curled up in a ball every time we were attacked and cried for his mommy. When we got back he expected us to lie for him, but we didn't. That is when we started to learn that he wasn't just a jerk, but rather a hateful, murderous dog. Anyway, he came back to the Tree later on and he setup an elaborate plan to discredit us. Along the way people died at his hands and we let him get away. It was a bad moment for all involved.

"So, that's the short of it. It doesn't seem so bad when you bundle it up like that, but you'll have to trust Mack and I when we say that he is the scum of the Wold and that if we don't kill him this time then there will be even more blood on our hands as he continues his evil ways.

"Meet everyone at the base of the tree in a couple hours? I'll find a caravan to travel with back to Plateau City. And Gleeman, if you want a story then I suggest you join us. This tale will make you popular with the common folk."

And I won't take any items or treasure involved in this, either, as Gaston has lots of money to pay for items that may turn out to harm us in the end, or make it easier to scry on us.

I'm not sure why we would need to go all the way to Plateau City to give our sworn testimony unless it WAS a trap.

On the other hand, it was just a matter of time before Gaston dispatched assassins after us anyway.

And road trips are fun!!!! Let's go!"

"A trap. I had not considered that." Armand leans back in his chair and stares at the ceiling briefly. "Say Miles would you excuse us for a bit. We need to discuss somethings in private.

Armand picks up his hammer and motions for the group to follow him back to one of Ciyradyl's private negotiation rooms. When (and assuming if) everyone comes back.

"I've gathered you here, because one of you is a ..." Armand trails off. "I always wanted to say that. In any case I think it's just better to talk about some things without other's overhearing us. That caused some problems last time. We should still consider developing some kind of code language." He shrugs his shoulders.

"Then perhaps it would be better for James to remain here? Would he be safe from Gaston here? I mean we know that at one point Gaston had hired several spies about the Tree. But that was with borrowed money. And from reports he's tapped out. Never-the-less James indicated that Gaston had contracted with the head of the thieves guild in Plateau City and named some names for us. That could potentially be quite inconvenient for Gaston, but also for the thieves guild. So I'm not sure if James would be safer to come with us or to just give us an affidavit and stay hidden here. Thoughts?"

Armand smiles toward Atlas and cracks his knuckles. "Atlas old boy, I think I have to agree with you. I for one am prepared to argue to Lord Gargul that even if it's not quite Gaston's time yet it's close enough."

"Before we go I think we should try to do some research about Plateau City. Ask around the Tree and among the caravans. What could we be walking into?" He motions to Mack and Atlas. "When you first encountered Gaston did you have any contact with anyone from Plateau City? What about these WLA contacts that Mack mentioned? Would they do any good? I just don't want to walk into a situation like we did with the Drow, where we're going in blind and not aware of all the court intrigues."

Miles seems quite happy to sit at the table while the party discuss things privately.

Armand ushers the group to a quiet corner of the tavern. He is of the opinion the party should do some research into Plateau City. He doesn't want to go in blind if it can be avoided.

Atlas declares it to be a trap! He doesn't seem as interested in the Gaston's trial so much as he is interested in killing him. He sets up a plan for everyone to meet at the base of the Tree in a few hours.

Mack concurs that this has to be a trap. He even suspects that Miles may be in on it. He isn't too sure why the party would have to give testimony in person either.

Prof Barrister or Intelligence Check DC10 Highlight to display spoiler: {It kindof makes sense that the testimony has to be made in person. Anyone could forge a signature or create a false written declaration.}

Osul takes a closer look at Miles. He sure eats a lot for an elf, but he's in excellent physical health. His clothes are clean, save for some dirt on his boots. The handle of his rapier looks worn, as if it has seen some action. Miles notices Osul looking at him and flashes a big toothy grin as he chews on the pastry.

Beordir and Armand discuss bringing James along. He doesn't have a lot of experience on the road, although he does know about Gaston. Where would he be safest? Would he even want to come along?

Pym takes a good look at the signet ring. It is sized for a medium sized finger, is gold with diamonds, and is probably worth quite a bit. The initials "G L" would seem to be those of Gaston. Perhaps this ring is proof that Plateau City has captured him? The ring has no noticeable magical aura to it.

He nods to Drogeos and Pym. "I'm glad you are coming along. I think we could use a perspective that's less tangled up with the past interaction with Gaston. I didn't know him, but I'm not sure those with long experience would listen to me alone."

To Armand, he reminds him, "We were gone more than a month north and James was fine that whole time. I'm less worried about James individually and more about the Tree in total. Atlas goes about gathering his gear and trying to find a caravan they can travel with. He makes a quick detour to the Catacombs for one final preparation.

When the topic of James comes up, "We should certainly get some more information from him, especially some contacts we can somewhat trust. However, I do think he should stay here. Returning there would be too dangerous for him. Besides, we need someone to watch our place."

Atlas grudgingly spares some time to join the group and question James about things they should know going back to Plateau City. Atlas grew up near there and spent plenty of time in and out of Plateau City when he was a messenger boy, but that was quite a while ago.

As Atlas has been going about his business, he comes upon a thought. He searches for Miles. "Miles! Stop eating for a moment and tell me why Gaston's signet ring was part of the encouragement. and how do we know that you're truly with the magistrates and not with Gaston himself. You could be part of the trap. Heck, knowing Gaston, you could just be a vessel that he is using to get to us, every word and action being controlled by him back in Plateau City through some form of evil magic. If you know anything about him then you know that we should be suspicious about everything, including you." Atlas seems to be very agitated the more he thinks about all this. For those that know him, they know that Gaston has this effect on him. Too many times people that didn't know Gaston delayed as they tried to reason with him or give him the benefit of the doubt. Due to that he has killed innocents.

"Their blood is on our hands" Atlas says out loud to no one in particular.

They gave us some information on Gaston when we threatened to turn them over as posers to the Star Mages guild. We could try to find them and question them when we get to the city, though they were admitted members of the thieves guild so I'm not sure how trustworthy they would be.

"You're right though, I am quite good with a rapier. I might not be worthy of sparring with the likes of any of you, but I can hold my own. In my line of work you have to be able to defend yourself. You never know when an angry spouse will try and lop your head off simply for delivering a letter."

Miles seems more relaxed talking to Armand "The ring is a gift, and intended as proof that Plateau City has Gaston in custody. Wear it, sell it, give it away, throw it in a well. It's yours now to do with as you please. A gift from Plateau City that the Wardens may answer the call. Pym.. am I pronouncing that right?.. will tell you that it is not magical. Miles leans in closer to Armand and speaks in a hushed voice "Between you, me and the Tree, I wouldn't be surprised if the Count is funding a vendetta against Gaston to see he gets what's coming to him. You know, slipping some coin to the right officials. Probably where these rubies came from. That's just my guess though"

Osul doesn't sense anything untoward about Miles. He is eccentric, that's for sure. He looked genuinely displeased when Atlas tried to intimidate him though. There are undertones that he is frustrated, but he is hiding it well beneath a cheerful demeanour.

Armand excuses himself from the group to go and speak with James. James is a little concerned at first, but seems relieved that the party will be dealing with things. Armand asks a number of questions that James tries to answer. Gaston moves from town to town, wherever the next scam can be performed. He didn't have friends, per se, more like disposable accomplices. Favorite hangouts? Find a tavern that caters to the lowest common denominator. Unless he's running a con he'll be hanging around with other low-lifes waiting for his next score. James doesn't know of any secret hideouts that Gaston would have, but try finding someone associated with the thieves guild. He's used them in the past when he wanted somewhere to lie low. The courts in Plateau City are generally considered very fair. It's to be expected in such a large and civilized place. The WLA, Star Mages Guild and Dragon Consortium - arguably the three most powerful and influential organisations in the Wold - all have their headquarters in Plateau City.

Beordir does not have much success locating a caravan leaving for Plateau any time soon. The best he can do is find someone willing to sell him some horses and ponies.

"You know, I have only been here one day and it seems there is an adventure to be had. Is this how everyday goes for the "Wardens?" By the way, I would love to hear the story behind that name sometime.

Atlas appreciates that Miles let him off the hook and while he waits for Beordir to return with news of the caravan, since he didn't have any luck himself, he spins the tale of their last encounter with Gaston. Pym has already heard this one, but a second dose should ensure that he gets the story right when he starts telling it at the inns for free room and board.

Upon completion of the story Atlas is surprised to see that a package has arrived for him. He opens it up to find a rustic orange cloak. "It's hear, and it is perfect!" Atlas shows off his new cloak to the group. "Supposedly, this will help me avoid some of the pitfalls of our trade, providing resistance to magic and various other challenges we face. Let's hope it works!"

Once Beordir returns with news of the horses, Atlas is quick to suggest that they make as much headway as they can today before the sun goes down.

Armand returns to the inn. "Well James had no ideas on any specifics. Apparently Gaston ran all kinds of cons in different cities. There maybe more people than us summoned for his trial. James did say that Gaston often tried working with thieves guilds so we'll need to keep on the alert."

Armand sits and sips some water. "Has anyone identified these jewels that came with the ring?" He sorts through the gems and tries to see what he can do to assess them.

"Armand, Mack, there was a set of scales that Leskni had. It may be worthwhile checking her room for it.", suggests 'Osul as he looks at the huge map on the wall, trying to gauge distance and time to their destination. "Miles? About 100 miles to Plateau City via Edenmoor? It is good to have the company of one who has only just traversed it himself!"

DM RobC - "Well that's good to hear"

Armand and Mack take a closer look at the ring and gems. There's about 500gp worth of rubies each, and the ring is worth an easy 1000gp on its own.

"Yep, give or take around a hundred miles" Miles nods to Osul

Atlas is pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cloak that arrives. It meets his exact specifications.

Pym is pleased by Miles' answer - even if it is just Miles' opinion on things.

Beordir returns with mounts for the party, and it seems everyone is about ready to go

----------------------------------
OOC: Please choose a mount and consider it yours free of charge: light horse, pony or riding dog - each with a riding saddle. Feel free to describe it, give it a name, and so on :)

If you choose you can instead purchase some other form of transport (eg: wagon, cart or carriage)

Please make any final preparations you need to. The adventure is about to kick off!

Leading a string of horses is a lot easier than leading a string of refugees, but still involves irritating logistics. Nevertheless, Beordir manages to get them all outside the tavern. He steps up to the table where the others are chatting and tells Atlas, "Seems like no caravans are leaving soon. I thought this would be the next best thing, particularly since you wanted to leave quickly."

"I was able to bank on our reputation as Wardens to get them, but I'd like to try to get them back if I can. So no naming any of them Monster Bait or Chimera Food."

Armand pauses again. "Though I guess from what James was saying, there's no telling, Gaston's horse could very well have been stolen. Armand shrugs. "I guess I'll bring along both, in case I wind up having to give Gaston's horse back to someone.

Armand turns and wanders off. Perception 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {"I even named that horse already, Bregga and I were getting along."}

Atlas looks surprised as Beordir arrives. "Mounts, excellent idea! I would have preferred a griffon, but I guess as Warden's we don't have that much credit." Atlas was joking, but he quickly warms up to the idea of buying a griffon in the future!

He walks the line of horses and finds one that looks fast, sturdy, and well trained. Its shiny black coat is soft as Atlas rubs his hand from the back flank to the front shoulder. When he gets to the animal's face it pulls away, letting him know who is boss. "I'll take this one, he's got spirit! However, he is too well trained to be given away. I'll reimburse the owner."

As Atlas gets to know his horse he asks a random question to the group, "Have any of you thought about joining the Dragon Consortium? I didn't really care for these sort of things in the past, but the more we do, the more it seems to align with their philosophy. However, I worry about the politics. Anyway, just throwing the question out there since we'll be going to Plateau City and if I'm not mistaken that is where their headquarters are."

Atlas finally stops in front of his horse and stares him in the eyes. "Shadow, Storm, Rogue, Bandit, Midnight, Onyx. There are too many cliche names for a black horse, you deserve better. You are now known as Sabre."

-------------------------------------------------
ooc: I'm upping the light horse to a light horse (combat trained). I'll pay the 120 gold, or do I just pay the difference to account for the combat training?

Also, are griffons a possibility in the future? I am happy to save my money for one of those!

"Thank you, Beordir, but I shall decline. I would prefer to be an animal than have one bear me."

He steps up to answer a posed question, "Pym, that is difficult to say. The first time I heard it was when Folbre Ilyndrathyl used it to refer to us at the not a trial of Olrich, James, and (in absentia) Gaston. Maybe it had been mentioned earlier amongst others, or maybe he came up with it in that moment. Anyone else have clearer recollections?"

A few moments later a mastiff comes barreling down the way. Equipped with a riding saddle and saddle bags, he bumps past everyone and reaches Pym. Greets him with a slobbery kiss.

Pym looks at everyone, "Everyone, meet Hank." Climbing on board and scratching Hank behind his ears, "Hank, meet everyone."

Mack immediately calls 'dibs' on the St Bernard. It is almost as tall as he is!

Armand decides he will take two horses - his, and, well, his other one. The one that used to belong to Gaston. If Gaston really is locked up, riding his horse into town could be rubbing salt into the wound. That's not to say he doesn't deserve it though.

Atlas asks an interesting question - have the group considered joining the Dragon Consortium? Adventurers cannot just join, however. They must be invited by the Consortium and must then face a number of trials. Only the best of the best are selected. The rewards they receive are equally as impressive: magic rings, a castle, and being considered minor nobles.

Atlas eventually finds a combat trained mount, but finds it costs him 120g. He names the pure black thoroughbred "Sabre".

Pym smiles and is already prepared. He blows his signal whistle and a large mastiff bounds into view! Meet 'Hank'.

Beordir hasn't decided on a horse yet, and Osul declines a mount preferring his own forms.

Miles stands beside a tall, pure white stallion as he watches the party prepare.

------------------------
OOC: Trey/Atlas brings up an excellent point. Does the party want to try to become a Dragon Consortium group? Trials usually start around level 10. Note that not all groups succeed in these. The mighty BBL party chose not to attempt them, the Ust group failed, however recently the Hook group DID succeed. Please discuss amongst yourselves (via email?) and let me know the outcome :)

Re Griffins: It has been discussed in the rules forum. Short answer: no.

Atlas mounts his new travel companion and takes her out for a spin. She's a fast one! He takes a few minor jumps over streams and through a few trees just to make sure they're in sync before they head out on their trip. When he gets back, he provides her some water and a meal as the rest of the group gathers to leave.

"The Dragon Consortium sounds rather political to me. Not something I'm sure I'm interested in, castles, nobility, politics and such...... but if the group is interested, I'd definitely enjoy tagging along for the fun! The adventure aspect of it would definitely be interesting! And I've always wanted to meet a dragon." :)

I pet Atlas's horse, which I've nicknamed Snowflake in my head, as we have the discussion.

Beordir looks over the horses, shaking his head at the idea of Mack meeting a dragon.

He decides that a warhorse is the way to go, so he negotiates with the horse trader to purchase a dun light warhorse. He rides it around, making sure he's not being cheated. Once paid for, starts gathering up his traveling gear, securing it to the horse.

(OOC I'll readily pay the extra 120 to have something that won't run off as easily.)

Armand runs up the Tree real quick to see if he can talk Ciyradyl into some traveling food supplies. He also leaves his portion of the gems with her asking her to keep an eye on James and see that he doesn't starve and has some allowance money to buy personal items. It's not that he doesn't trust James, but Gaston has reared his ugly head again and it may spook James into running if he had enough money.
