DM RobC - "I wonder how horrible the Matriarch will be?"
Tuesday January 31st, 2017 5:37:40 AM

Mack inspects the doors very carefully. From what he can see, if someone with decent upper body strength was to push against them, well, they would open.

Carver cannot see any locking mechanism either. It's a nice change to find a door that isn't locked in this place. Of course, that could be either good or bad.

Osul determines the weather underground to be somewhat dark the next few days, with no chance of wind, rain or sun. On the surface he suspects the weather will be somewhat overcast, and will have chances of moderate rain. How he knows that while underground beats me, but he knows it!

Atlas stands on guard. He has no idea what to expect beyond the closed doors.

Armand shows an uncharacteristic display of logic. Perhaps the earlier blows to the head helped in some way?

Owen looks about with a Detect Magic spell and finds no magical items or auras in the area (except for the party, of course).

Leskni advises caution, in particular to be quiet - in case it matters.

Beordir wonders how horrible the Matriach will be. He casts a Protection Spell on himself, just in case.

Mack stands aside to let the muscle in the party push the heavy stone doors open.

Carver and Atlas push hard against the doors. It takes some effort, but they swing open.

Armand watches the rear - intently.

Beordir waits patiently, as Osul and Leskni caution the party about the Matriarch.

The light made by the party shines into the room ahead.

Unlike the other constructed rooms, this room is more cavern like. The walls look to be polished crystal of some kind, and reflect light well.

The cavern is filled with hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites made of the crystal. Amongst the crystal formations are a few drow bodies.
Their bones are littered with crystals that punctured their mortal frames. Remarkably, they look very fresh. They could have died only moments ago.

Atlas looks about to see if there is anything about the cavern that would help them make a decision.

"My first inclination is to make a run for it. We should be able to make it there in just a couple seconds. If those stalactites are intentionally used as a weapon then it would be much harder to hit a running target and they would have fewer attempts to do so."

Atlas throws out several options for the party to consider. Slow and steady, or make a break for it? Mack has another suggestion involving a fireball, but Beordir isn't too keen on destroying such a site.

Mack is ready to head into the room but is swiftly stopped by Carver. In the tussle, Mack inadvertantly kicks a rock into the room. The rock bounces off the floor along the room and into a nearby wall. Each time the rock bounces, the stalactites overhead explode into shards!

Mack notices that that the crystals appear sensitive to sound. Even the sound of footsteps would be enough to make the overhead crystal formations shake. Anything louder than a whisper would have a chance of causing them to explode. Mack's remaining life may have been considerably shorter if he hadn't been stopped by Carver.

Osul wracks his brain to think of creatures that might use crystals offensively. Crystal golems, Carnivourous (and non-carniverous) Crystal Oozes, Diamond Spiders, Caterprisms, Crystalline Horrors, and Glass Wyrms are amongst the many many different creatures that come to mind.

Armand suggests casting a grappling hook into the room to pull the corpses back out. Alas, Mack has no such hook handy.

Owen casts Detect Magic and looks into the room. As with before, everything here looks to have some sort of faint transmutation aura to it. A permanent Unguent of Timelessness perhaps? The corpse he can see has a faint necromancy aura to it.

Leskni looks into the room with her deathwatch spell, and does not see any signs of life (or death) within the spells 30ft range.

He thinks about the suggestions thus far, "Silent spell seems like it would work if sound is truly the trigger. However, why aren't they breaking now as we talk? Also, what's the radius of a silent spell? Could we all fit in it? " Atlas decides to try something real quick. He looks out across the room and yells, "YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS MATRIARCH!"

"I don't want to have to cast silence early, if we can just get everything to trigger by throwing some stuff around."

DM RobC - "Silence spell? Never hear of it."
Friday February 3rd, 2017 7:50:07 AM

Mack suggests a Silence Spell might do the trick, which causes some discussion amongst the party.

Atlas tests a theory and screams into the room. From where he stands, one crystal explodes!

Armand then tests a theory of his own. He looks about for a rock and throws it into the room, aiming for the same spots as Mack's rock. He hits the first spot squarely. Nothing happens. The rock then bounces off somewhere else. BANG! The crystals above shatter into thousands of pieces! The third and forth bounces of the rock are relatively quiet and do not cause any changes in the crystals.

Beordir notices that the crystals reform quickly. The ones from just a few seconds ago are already starting to grow back. If the party were quiet enough, sneaking very carefully and stealthily, it may be possible to make their way across the room. Carver kindof has the same idea.

Leskni declares "Everything in the room that looks dead is actually dead, not a construct and not a corpse." Dead but not a corpse? An interesting deduction from a spell with only a 30ft range. Hmm....

Owen is happy to fly through the room. Osul thinks similarly if he were to take the form of an owl. Of course, if there were other dangers in the room....

As for the rest of us, I don't have a clue. I am inclined to just move as quietly as we can and give it a go. I would suggest that we go one at a time though. That way if one person makes a sound we don't all pay the price for it. Unless there's a different opinion I'm happy to go first. Besides, a plan is only good until the moment it is implemented. After that all bets are off. Better to just go and see what happens than sit here wondering all day."

Atlas lifts his shield above his head as he prepares to sneak across the cavern. He pauses just to make sure there are not any valid points raised before he goes.

Armand pauses to compose this thoughts. "My concerns are why are the corpses scattered? You would think they would be in a line from here to yonder doorway, but they are not. While I have the silence spell it is not going to last very long, 30 seconds. It would be enough for all of us as a group to get to the door, but not much beyond that. Then we don't know what is going to be needed to open the door. So once we commit to using the spell it's all in and forward ho. There will not be time for scouting to and fro. Although, as we pass we can sight on 3 of the 4 corpses Owen and if they radiate some form of magical equipment, we should just snag them and drag them with us for now."

He finds that when he taps quietly, no matter how much pressure he applies - which is quite a lot considering he's a taur - he can't trigger anything. When he bangs the tip of his lance hard against the crystal ground, however, the noise is noticeable and causes the stalactite in that position to burst.

Everyone else throws ideas around. Silence spells, harmonicas, throwing stones, elven hands, setting Mack on fire. Ok, that last one might be one of mine. But there are so many things the party want to try!

"I mean, just wait, I'll cast Silence on this rock" He picks up a hand bit of rubble from the clawing of the walls. "Then you need to stay within 20 feet of me. Spellcasting in the silence zone is going to be well pretty much impossible. But spells done before hand will stay in effect. I still have detect magic on. We'll need to do hand signals or some such. I'm going to go in and swing by that first corpse. If it gets up, we kill it. If it doesn't we drag it along because we're not going to have time to search it right now. We drag the corpses with us to the other side of the door. If we get attacked at the door we drop the corpses of course."

He looks around at each person. "Carver, Atlas as long as we're not getting attacked, you being the strongest I say you drag the corpses. IF the Silence doesn't work we can always use them as meat shields for the exploding crystal. Owen, Leskni, precast what you may need for the door, tongues, whatever has been useful in the past. Mack when we get near the door it's up to you to check it good. Remember we only have 30 seconds to cross the room and get the door open."

He waits while anyone that needs to cast whatever they want. Armand will have to be in the center of the walk for anyone wanting to be silenced. When ready Armand will head on the following path...

Y8, Z8, AA8, AB8, AB9, AB10 that swings us by corpse at AC9. That's one round of movement assume he casts after the speech and then heads out. That will allow anyone faster to step in front everyone else to walk beside or behind.

Beordir shakes his head at Atlas' impetuousness. "In the last room we could have waited to define a real plan. Without a real strategy, someone was grievously injured. Rather than just walking in can we define a plan."

"Personally, I like the silent rock idea. We can also use it against a spellcaster later."

DM RobC - "Personally, I like the silent rock idea."

Armand casts Silence on a rock, and cautiously steps forward into the room. He can feel some crystal shards crush underfoot, but he can hear nothing (OOC: Please keep track of the number of rounds for the silence spell!)

Mack, Osul and Owen follow safely along with Armand

Squeaver looks longingly at Mack. Has his master abandoned him?

From this distance Mack believes he can see something stuck in the hair of the corpse nearby.

Owen hasn't seen crystals like these before. By all account they look completely natural. But they way they react so violently to sound, and the speed at which they regrow? Obviously some magical meddling.

Atlas sneaks quietly into the room. He can see the crystals tremble ever so slightly. But nothing breaks (OOC: Don't forget you take a -5 penalty if you choose to move greater than half speed while being stealthy)

Carver prepares to take off his armor. It will take 1 full minute to take off the armor if he chooses to go down that path. It's not too late if he wishes to change his mind...

The others stand safely in the passageway, watching the crystal stalactites slowly reform.

I do my best to do any quick searching I can, without slowing down the Silence Sphere. And I take a closer look at the hair of the corpse as we get within range.

Squeaver will stay towards the back, with Beordir. I assume they're also joining the Silence Sphere, but towards the rear of it.

If we're tight on space, I'll definitely take Leskni up on the Reduce offer. But if we've got plenty of room in our Silence Sphere, I'll stay normal size.

Lastly, I give Atlas the hand signals for: "There are 3 ninjas and a dragon up ahead, hiding behind that rock."

As Atlas makes his way across the crystal cavern he hears those behind him talk about forgotten silence spells and shrinking. Dang it, why didn't they say something before hand! And I should have remembered Leskni's shrinking spell. Stupid idiot, going to get yourself killed. As he shakes his head and sneaks about he notices the crystals tremble a bit, which quickly focuses his attention back on being stealthy.

Atlas considers heading back to Armand and the group. He then considers making a run for it towards the door. I'm not sneaky, what the heck am I doing out here!. He begins to feel a bit overwhelmed with the options. OK, if it were up to me I would just run for it, but they've already saved me a few times. They don't want to have to do it again. So, let's just wait it out.

Atlas returns Mack's hand signals with one of his own, which involves a big (and quiet) "come over here" wave. He then just waits for Armand and the group to come by his position so that he can fall into the sphere of the silence spell.

Mack finds some type of tear-shaped pearl stuck in the corpses hair. The corpse looks drow, male, and freshly deceased.
Mack Highlight to display spoiler: {You catch a glimpse of something moving amongst the crystal walls. Something intangible. Wait! There's two things! One to the south-west and one to the south-east. They're moving behind the crystal walls but circling towards the party. 2 ninjas perhaps?}

Hope I explained that ok!})

Osul picks up the corpse with ease. There are no signs of rigor mortis. The body is quite limp and doesn't have that decaying corpse smell yet.

Atlas freezes in place. Sure, it was good to make it so far without disturbing anything, but having the comfort of the groups Silence spell would be added protection. It doesn't take but a moment for Armand to include him in the silence.

The party move along in the silenced area with Armand holding the magically silenced stone.

Everyone is now within the silenced area.

Carver moves to the next corpse. It's another drow male that looks as freshly killed as the last one.

Carver gets a semi brilliant idea, he assists whoever has a hold of the corpse to load it across his back, that way he can carry it, as well as use it to absorb some of the crystals damage if it should fall towards him. He'll also pull out his sword after having put the lance away to load the corpse. He will move with the rest of the group towards the other entrance....

OOC: Paul's/Leskni's suggestion makes a lot of sense and also keeps things easier for your DM. Unless stated otherwise I'll just move you along within Armand's silence zone. You can be near the front, the rear, the middle, the edge, and so on. Alternatively, if you want to leave the silence area, just give a map coordinate

Mack grabs the pearl and then tries to give some indications to the party. 3 ninjas and a dragon? One group that way and another group the other way? Kid sure does have an imagination.

Atlas looks about but can't see what all the fuss is about. Beordir similarly can't see anything out of the norm.

Osul continues carrying the corpse but tries to usher Armand to move a little faster.

Armand makes his way to the next corpse and picks it up. Carver gives him a hand, and between them, one of them now has the corpse on their back.

Leskni and Pella move with the group.

Everything is very quiet, as usually happens in a silence spell. But the group can now see what it was that Mack is so excited about.

Two sinister looking incorporeal forms emerge from the crystaline walls ahead - one to the right and one to the left of the party. The shadowy figures sway and move in position. Floating and sliding across the crystal floor, they move towards the party with outstretched ghostly claws!

The one to the south west makes it way within striking reach of Atlas!

The one to the south east is heading towards Armand!

Leskni's Deathwatch reveals them to definitely be undead!

No crystals were affected by the movement of the creatures.

The stalactites from earlier continue to reform.

Mack and Squeaver move to attack the creature approaching Armand. Mack's attack misses, but Squeaver's sole attack lands.

Atlas has greater success with the other monster. His sword misses completely, but he manages a glancing blow off of his spiked shield. The sound of the blow must have done something, as the crystal above the monster explodes, injuring it slightly.

Carver charges, but finds the floating figure a difficult target to hit.

Beordir is cautious but does his best to atack the creature from reach. His glaive swings over Squeaver's head and through the monster.

Osul and Owen move with Armand to get closer to the far doorway. Leskni feels the same. She and Pella can't get out of there quick enough!

Leskni waits to see what the rest of the group decide to do. When the group moves towards the door, so does she.

Armand channels positive energy once more and moves towards the door. He knows these things are undead, but in all the hurry he can't quite pinpoint exactly what they are (OOC: I also consider it a free action!)

Owen also doesn't know what these creatures might be. He only manages a single 5ft step away (OOC: A move action would provoke an AOO and I'm guessing you want to avoid that)

Atlas stands tall and fights back against the undead monster. Between Armand's channels and Atlas' own attacks, the creature looks to have taken significant damage despite being incorporeal.

Mack, Squeaver and Beordir continue to fight against the other, and it too looks worse than it did a few moments ago - if such a thing is possible.

Carver knows full well that these creatures are a type of Greater Shadow and are most certainly evil. That would mean undead immunities, incorporeal, and immunity to sneak attacks.

Osul, Leskni, Pella and Carver moves towards the door. Carver pushes as hard as he can. Frustratingly the door does not budge. He can see not 1, but 3 keyholes on the stone door. The only time in the past few days the party have come to a door and Mack wasn't the first to come to it.

The enemy act..

S1 attacks Atlas, striking him once more (Hit Touch AC28. Atlas takes 2pts str damage)

S2 attacks Mack. (Hit Touch AC21. Mack takes 2pts str damage)

What's more, the sound of the attacks causes the stalagtites above S1, S2, Atlas and Mack explode, showering them in crystal shards. ([b]Atlas takes 3pts damage. Mack takes 4pts damage[/i])

The crystals by the entrance are still reforming.

"HA-HA, you FOOL! I've been strength drained my ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!" :)

I do glance over at Atlas to make sure he's hanging in there. Anxious to dispatch this one and get over to help Atlas, Squeaver and I continue to flank and pound on the enemy we're already on (S2).

I do what I can to avoid any falling shards. At the very least, staying in a spot where they've already fallen so I don't keep activating new ones.

(d20+18 acrobatics check of 21)

OOC: I didn't roll my Sneak Attack damage this time. Sounds like they are immune to that.

Do we get any Acrobatics check, or save, or such to avoid falling shards? I've put a lot of focus into Acrobatics, as well as having both Deflect Arrows and Evasion as well.... in the hopes that it would some day help in these types of situations. ;)

OoC: For last turn, Owen was taking a Withdraw Action, which doesn't prompt attacks of opportunity. So he should be with the main group. Sorry I didn't make that clear in my post.

IC: Owen continues to move towards the door. As he gets close, he makes sock puppet gestures at Armand and then points at the creatures. He hopes to suggest that once the main group is in the doorway, Armand should toss the Silence rock to Mack and the other fighters.

(If Owen can make it to the door in a move action and Armand tosses the rock so he can speak, which depends how the last turn's actions are resolved, Owen will turn and cast Magic Missile, dealing 12 points of Force damage to the nearer Shadow.)

Mack and Squeaver keep up their combined assault. The stalactites overhead start to slowly reform. It will be some time before they are at risk of exploding and damaging the pair once more.

Beordir joins in, however his efforts cause the crystals above him to break (Beordir takes 6pts damage)

Atlas keeps up his one-on-one battle. It's draining, but it seems an even match.

By the doorway, Owen casts a magic missile spell at the nearest shadow. The force damage does the trick, but the noise of casting the spell causes the crystal above Owen to crack and shower him in shards (Owen takes 4pts damage)

Carver takes a step to the side and fires at the shadow in battle with Atlas, but the shot misses (OOC: Without the Precise Shot feat you take a -4 penalty for shooting into melee)

Armand steps in front of Carver to then try a searing light spell. The spell misses its target, but the shards overhead do not (Armand takes 5pts damage)

Leskni decides to bring some holy power to the battle. She casts a cure spell - and takes some crystal damage (Leskni takes 5pts damage) - and then causes more pain for the shadow.

Osul searches his passenger, desperately looking for a key of some kind. He finds a second pearl, but no key.

Mack and Squeaver continue their flanking assault. The pair are becoming quite accustomed to the tactic.

Carver and Owen concentrate their attacks on the shadow looming over Atlas. The sound of Carver's attack does cause the stalactites overhead to break (Carver takes 5pts damage). Both Carver's attack and Owen's weakens the shadow consdierably.

Beordir moves to Atlas's aid. The electricity flows from his fingertips and though he suspects he could have done better, he does damage the Shadow.

Armand then calls on the power of his deity: The Lord of Life and Death who abhors any undead that wander the Wold. The power that Armand sends around him causes both Shadows to instantly disappear! (OOC: Sorry, when channeling you "can choose to deal damage to undead creatures or to heal living creatures".)

Atlas holds his ground, even if that is all he can hold right now. Moving somewhere else could cause more crystals to fall. The Shadow didn't cause any visible cuts or wounds, but Atlas feels his strength has been considerably drained.

Leskni, Pella and Osul stand ready by the door.

Carver puts away the lance and then pretty much carries/ assists Atlas in reaching the doorway. In a hushed whisper, "Don't talk so loud, any thing can trigger these shards...."
After reaching the doorway, "I'll give you a couple minutes to get the door open, or I'll do so the noisy way, which I'd prefer not to." said in a whisper.

Owen remains quiet and still. He turns to inspect the door, but that's all he'll do in this dangerous place.

DM RobC - "Bring him here, Carver - this could take a while."
Friday February 17th, 2017 6:58:58 AM

Mack looks over the door. He can't find any obvious traps. He considers that it may just be as simple as picking the lock. But there are 3 key holes. Does he need to pick only one? Or two? Or three? Or a certain combination? (Highlight to display spoiler: {Nope, no acrobatics check, save or such to avoid the shards. Consider them a 2d4 trap that affects an entire 5ft square of area. That's pretty low damage when you have plenty of ways to avoid the crystals: silence, stealth, intentional noise, intentionaly targetting them, etc})

Carver is ready to give him a few minutes to work it out, otherwise he'll take a more direct approach to get the door open.

Atlas congratulates the group on a task well done as he slowly staggers towards the door. Armand moves closer to his ally and restores some his lost strength.

Owen and Leskni stay quiet, waiting for someone to get the door open so they can finally get out of this place.

Osul is still busy casting something. Something that takes 3 rounds to cast. Interesting...

OOC: This seems like the old trick DMs use against rogues where half the locks are locked, and half of them are unlocked.... the unwitting rogue "flips" them all, and hence, keeps locking half of them. In reality, any decent rogue should be able to tell if the lock is truly "locked or unlocked", or he's a pretty useless rogue.

I attempt to pick the locks that are actually locked.

Beordir was looking around for other threats as his friends moved toward the door at the back.

"Whew! I'm glad that's over.", he says in a whisper.

Then he carefully follows the path Atlas and Carver had taken toward the door so as to not bring any further shards down on his head. He quietly pockets a couple broken shards for later examination.

'Osul looks at Leskni with one raised eyebrow as he completes his incantation.
He reaches out and touches Atlas, casting Lesser Restoration.
In his mind's eye he sees the cast spell begin to float out of reach, when something vine-like and tentacular snatches it and drags it back in. It's a shock - he wasn't aware he could do that.
"I've got this, but like I said, this could take a while."

Armand cocks his head at Leskni. "I'm not sure what you mean by more expensive. I have to pray for my spells in advance and I'm tapped out for being able to restore Atlas fully. Gargul granted me an extra casting of it today when I prayed to him. But Atlas still appears a bit weak. Perhaps you should ask yourself what is best for the party, having one of our two fighters at something near his natural strength, or taking over for him on the front lines?"

Carver pulls out his holy symbol, walks over to Atlas and says a prayer. "Lord Gargul, bless my friend by granting him the recovery of his strength which he lost while fighting against shades. By restoring his strength, he can assist those of your followers in the fight."

Casts Lesser Restoration, restores 3

Carver looks to his other friends, "Don't look for any more spells from me, I'm just a lowly warrior in Lord Gargul's name, not an Eye like our other friend here." He looks at the priest as he says that.

"Thank you my friends. It is one thing to die and be brought back. It is another to be drained and pathetic. The feeling of despair that I could do nothing to help, and then to run away like I did...Thank you for your courage, your strength, and your healing." If anyone in the group is paying particular attention to Atlas, they may catch that his eyes swell a bit, as if he were about to cry, but it is gone with a few blinks of his eyes.

Atlas is feeling better as the spells and prayers heal him, but he still doesn't have his normal swagger. It is clear that he isn't fully healed just yet. However, that doesn't stop him from having some fun with Mack. "Hey Mack, what's the deal with you? Just running off, leaving my sorry butt out there to crawl back by myself. One might think that you didn't care." Atlas feigns being emotionally hurt by the halfling's actions. If Mack happens to look back he pours it on even more, to the point of being down right ridiculous.

Hearing Leskni's comment, Atlas tests his strength once more and nods. "Leskni, I promise I'll make it worth your while. I'll take your watch and kill any thing that comes our way while you restore your spells." Atlas smiles, knowing that Leskni is just trying to figure out what is best for the group. He truly appreciates that about her.

I have some experience of my own trying to determine the best use of the spells I have. I'm not sure what I've done to be lumped into whatever "you all" is when that was the opposite of what I counseled, but for now, you've started, so please remain focused on the Restoration spell."

"Again I ask if anyone else is feeling drained?", he adds - this time looking at Squeaver and Mack.

"I was just joking with you Leskni. I know that you always want to do what is best for the group and I appreciate that about you. Thank you for asking!"

As Leskni is casting her spell to help Atlas, he turns to Armand and puts his hand on his shoulder as he talks to him, "I am experienced with a bow and I actually have one that I leave back at our dwelling. While I'm not Mack, I still have to make some decisions around how much I can carry. The bow always seems to be the one that falls below the line. Granted, maybe I need to re-think my strategy. Or maybe I just need to get stronger." Atlas chuckles at the thought of that, then gives Armand a big smile before moving towards Leskni in preparation for her spell.

I may not need it right now, but I'm sure I'll be looking for ways to reduce the weight I carry around all the time as well. Now, while Atlas gets some of his strength back, what about this door?"
Carver goes about searching the corpse he carried to the doorway. He's looking for keys in particular.....

Atlas shivers like he just had a spider crawling up his neck. "I don't think I can bring myself to do that." He laughs out loud at that thought.

ooc: hey guys, good to be back. Rob is tending to family issues so I'll be plotting your demise for a while.

in the relative safety of the door area, Which is a good 20' from the nearest crystal the party relaxes, tends to wounds, horse plays and discusses the relative merits of magical quivers.

Mack: It is indeed the old three locks trap! The locks are very very smooth and it is only after you have "locked" the last one that you realize that it was unlocked, still having beat two and locked one, you now have these locks number so to speak, so you get a +5 circumstance bonus to defeating the last lock..again...being as you aren't trying to be horribly killed by undead shades, if you take 10...

Carver: you don't find keys but two of the corpses have what look to be tear-shaped pearls stuck in their hair. while the last one has a blue gem on a silver chain around his neck.

Atlas: the discussion and banter, not to mention all the lesser restorations have you feeling almost back to normal.

Leskni: prudent in her spell allocation philosophy, fears she came across as miserly, she didn't, and the miscommunication is quickly cleared up. she concentrates deeply on her spell

Armand: the crystals grow on the ceiling, floor and walls. but the walls themselves are plain grey stone.

Owen: engages in conversation but keeps an eye out in the crystal cavern. while no shards reach you here, some of the conversation cause a few of the crystals to burst spectacularly. it's actually pretty cool to watch.

So if either of you will use them, feel free to take them, if not I'll use them in case I get blocked into melee.
As for the necklace, anyone not wearing one will want to use this. It protects you from all diseases. So speak up if you want it."

Mack: no traps, on hidden monsters...well..Mya isn't hidden...the room seems secure.

Carver: yep it's a fire tear, you have idenified all the items.

Atlas: feeling human again, gets out of the way and lets those comfortable with the undead speak.

Leskni: poses a question, and awaits a response

Armand: does like wise, and awaits a response.

Owen: keeps his own counsel, and lets others do the talking.

‘Osul: does so as well.

Boerdir warily you look around, but you see only the crystal walls.

"The matriarch is up ahead, there is a door, you must answer it's question to pass. She is powerful, and monsterous, her eyes grow distant and she speaks, almost as if continuing a story,

“After dozens of sacrifices had been made, the matriarchs followers were confused. Why had she not done anything? Why were the fallen still dead? Why had the drow not conquered the surface yet? Why had nothing changed? It was then they began to see the truth. The matriarch only sought power for herself, and was never going to share it. But she had grown too powerful for them to destroy. In their quest for vengeance they had created their own monster.
They plotted in secret, and devised a plan to trap her in her own temple. Wards were put in place to.. to keep her from escaping, and knowledge of the temple was carefully removed from drow history.
But nothing stays hidden forever. It was only a matter of time before someone rediscovered this place.
And here you are.”

OOC: I'm looking at those tears now. http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Item:_Eberyon%27s_Tears
I'm a little confused. Is it +1 to hit, and an extra 1d6 potential frost damage on one natural attack per round?

IC:
I'm not sure why, but I'm starting to feel a little uneasy about Mya.

When the group is ready for me to do so, I finish checking the room and door for traps, and locks, and anything else of interest.

"Mack, take both, I believe the effect of the tear is only good for a single attack in a certain length of time. (each round 1 tear will affect a single attack not a type of attack so 2 tears will affect 1 punch each of your flurry) you'll get the most out of the tears than anyone else."
Carver then concentrates on Mya
"Mya, it'd make our ability to defeat the Matriarch a lot easier if you could tell the answer to the question if you know it. And since she is trapped in that room, does that mean we would be reasonably safe to rest up here? It'd allow us to face her at our best and give us the greatest chance at defeating her and at the same time releasing you and the others to proceed to Lord Gargul's realm, where I expect you to be able to reside in the Lands of Rest. Since you have been assisting us, I will pray to my Lord Gargul in your favor, and explain all I can, to assist in his decision."
Carver will then afterwards but before they move any further, if Mya says it's relatively safe, "I think we should rest up, facing the Matriarch at less than our full abilities would just plain be stupid. We will probably be needing our full complement of spells and other things when we face her."

Beordir frowns from the back then asks, "Actually, why face her at all? She is sealed here. Is there any reason to think she might get out? "

"Additionally, that's a blind alley. She could be weak or overpowering. If we are not capable of defeating her, she will then be free to wreck havoc. I'm not certain that level of failure is worth the risk."

Armand waits for the others.

"Say Mack, I'm not sure exactly what those tear things do, but from what I overheard Carver say is that one of them deals some sort of frost or cold damage? Undead are pretty immune to that. Also not sure what we may need in regards to having to have magic weapons, or silver, or cold steel, or whatever to hit this Matriarch."

"Good points, Carver and Atlas. I'll give them both a shot then! I'd LOVE to actually be able to do some damage when I hit things. I currently hit pretty regularly, but don't do squat for damage." ;) "If anyone else wants to give one a try though, don't be afraid to speak up."

Mack is tickled to get the tear of eberon, with Carver admonition to take the other as well, his damage per round should be quite respectable. Like the good guy he is he offers one to the reast of the party.

Carver: Mya responds to you below. and you remind Beordir of the agreement you made with the Drow.

Atlas: still tickled to be at full strength just stands around and grins.

Leskni: reminds Beordir of the promise they made to the ghosts of the drow children.

Armand: weighs in on the debate, and admonishes Mack of the dangers involved when fighting the undead..

Owen: Prudently thinks about his spell inventory and compliments 'Osul on his chutzpa

‘Osul: seems good to go.

Boerdir questions the wisdom of facing an ancient, powerful unknown drow matriarch

Mya's eyes take on a sad cast. " No...i've helped you all I am able, the lines of the ancient poem are all that I am allowed to relate to you, even then she forbid me speak the words of the poem, so I wrote it down for you. She brightens up a bit. "Yes! this room is the safest place in the whole area, you can rest here and not worry about anyone bothering you. She looks at Beordir, "Truly, I...I...havent been flesh in so long, and even when I was of flesh I was but a child....I don't know how powerful she is, she is less powerful than she was eons ago, but she keeps us here to keep her from age, and insanity."

“We - the chosen - are cursed to stay in this place with her. It is only by killing her and destroying her altar that we will be set free. Free to finally see the Lands of Rest”
“You are at the final door. The door that traps the Matriarch inside. The word to open the door has not been spoken since the door was locked. Hopefully, you will figure out the answer”

Where did you write down this poem, if it's behind us, I must be as thick headed as my mother used to say about my skull. If it's yet in front of us, I'm sure some of our smarter members will be able to figure it out. Mack: questions whether or not to set a watch.

Carver: Thanks Mya for her help and asks about the riddle. She looks confused, then a bit nervous. She says "you'll see the last part written above the door you notice her obviously fiddling with her hands, she points to her feet

Atlas: agrees to the usual watch.

Leskni: asks the party about casting clairvoyance, does anyone object?

Armand:Channels healing all around! 8 points to all. since you aren't in combat and no one is trying to stick a sword through you lets up the to 12 points.

Owen: examines the door. (see below for what you see)

‘Osul: settles in and then realizes, there is no day and night below ground. you have no idea.

Boerdir reluctantly settles in for the "night" then starts playing around with the mummified elf hand on a chain. It's pretty cool. with concentration you can pick things up at a distance! although if you move the object further than 15' from you. the spell ends and the object drops.

Mya turns to mist, with the ghostly cry that has accompanied many of her departures are you here to save us? also as has happened before the mist of her passing coaleses into writing on the floor where she stood. you remember seeing some of the lines of the writing in other places.

I wait and I watch
I strike without pause
Vengeance is justice
Will you follow my cause?

The final line to the poem is written above the door,

when Owen examines the "door" he sees a twisting mass of swirling black shadows. In the rock above them is written "who am I?" the shadows are not the undead kind. but it looks as if all the shadows in the wold have twisted themselves up into this portal. Light has no effect on them. do you touch them?
