it's a showdown in no mans land. for the cowboy of the modern age.

DM Shane
Thursday July 28th, 2016 10:08:52 PM

options are discussed, votes taken and the party heads off after Gaston.
With Pella providing overwatch it is child's play to keep track of him without giving yourself away.
It gets fairly boring, basically just travelling down a trail, stopping at odd intervals when you get Pellas notification that Gaston's group has stopped.
That is until the Sun begins to slip behind the horizon. Pella notices another group begin to stealthy parallel Gaston's group. Even from 1000 ft up, she notices that's it a group of 3 drow. they are even with Gaston's group and about 150 yards to the left of his position.

Owen sighs. "Just what we wanted, more conflict between the drow and Gaston. I guess we should get closer and see what happens. I'd like to be within earshot, so I'll move up in disguise. The rest of you guys, be stealthy?"

With that, he pulls out his disguise kit and casts Disguise Self. He changes the color of his hair to brown, his eyes to green, and adds a thick, bushy beard and a little more muscle. His clothes change into a dark green shirt, brown pants, and boots, all with light wear from travel. Finally, he takes out his Rod of Minor Metamagic (Silence) and makes it look like a walking stick.

Then Owen makes his way toward Gaston's group.

Let me know when we need to charge. Otherwise, I'm with Mack. If they want to settle their own differences then I say we let them. However, if this is something else then it is good to know what. Mack: moves like a ghost towards the camp set up by Gaston's group, he gets a good hide about 45 foot from the camp and opposite of where the Drow are hidden.

Carver: Offers his thought on who the Drow might be, not knowing that Pella has already confirmed that it is the tree delegation. knowing that he moves like a...well a centaur, he keeps well away from the camp, relying on his compatriots to let him know when he is needed.

Atlas: Wisely keeps back with Carver, willing to let the two groups decide what goes down.

Leskni: yes, Pella sees clearly that it is Eclyandrly and her entourage. She shrinks down and doesn't even stir the grass as she moves to within 50 foot of the camp.

Armand: quaffs an Elixir of Stealth and a fly potion. like greased air you catch a spot near a tree by the group and stay hidden.

Atlas: waiting is boring, at least the bugs have laid off now that fall has finally come, well at least for you, carver is having some trouble.

Leskni: You knew about the Drow before you took your hide, you remain hidden and see:

Armand: from you vantage point in the tree you see:

Owen: As you approach the camp....

前sul: you owlish eyes easily make out the camp and everything in it. you see:

Olrich is the first to notice Owen, he speaks a quiet word and Gaston takes notice. James continues to make himself busy around the camp. Gaston speaks up. Hoy traveller!, What brings you out so far from civilization on this night? You can easily see that both Olrich and Gaston don't really care for Owen's presence, but the rules of sanctuary are sacred in these parts, they have to at least offer a place to sleep for the night and water, but neither appears happy about it.

ooc: I had a bird and squirrel poop on me last summer. I was not pleased either time, and both times I wondered if it was on purpose. I assumed smart-xxx animals instead of a druid. If Atlas could talk to 'Osul he would tell him to do it. Gaston knows that the only way he is ever successful is through planning. He doesn't take surprise well. He cowers, runs, whines, etc any time a surprise is thrown at him. So whether he is angry from the poop or if he is suspicious of a druid (which I doubt he would be knowing him) then it will not be part of his plan and he will become the Gaston we know instead of this pretend hero he tries to make himself out to be.

Gaston sighs. Anyone who has travelled the wilds here knows the rules..even a fop such as Gaston. Turning away someone seeking succor can be a death sentence, and many an unwelcoming traveller has found he has become a pariah when word reaches those that matter about such things..

I will not turn you from our fire, you are welcome, should you wish to stay. But truly friend, we have matters to discuss in private and it would be best if you did not. Please allow my steward to give you food and water and be on your way. Gaston is strangely contrite...almost ashamed as he says this, his eyes never reach Owens eyes.

Leskni: watches with amusement as 'Osul snags a mouse and misses gaston with a load of poop

Armand: watches carefully, aware that his potion of flight may need to be refreshed.

Atlas sighs, "Hard to argue your point. One of these days I may need to pray to your god so that I can get this boon as well. Until then, I'll lean on you my friend. Wake me for a shift here and there as needed."

Atlas lays out his bedroll and has a seat. He breaks out a light dinner and he offers some to Carver. Travel rations are bland, so he rushes through it knowing that it is best to get as much sleep as possible. After dusting the crumbs off his bedroll he wishes Carver an exciting evening, seriously, I need some action or I'm going to die of boredom," and then he lays down. As always, he keeps armed and armored. It only takes him a minute before he is snoring loud enough to wake the dead. Fortunately they are still quite a ways away.

Mack: comfortable in his hide catches cat naps through the night.

Carver: Stoic soldier that he is, takes the long watch

Atlas: snores lightly,

Leskni: keeps watching with her hawk through the night.

Armand: find that staying awake is fairly easy, dealing with boredom is not.

Owen: sleeps little due to the beard, but does manage to catch some shut eye for a few hours.

前sul: your enhanced vision brings the night alive. you spot many tasty goodies rustling through the grass, coyotes and ocelots patrol the night as well, hunting the same tasty goodies that you would hunt.

Olrich and James take turns at the watch during the night. Olrich, alert like a trained soldier ought to be. while James busies himself with tasks such as sewing and a bit of cooking prep during his watch.

when morning comes, the band takes their toilet and has breakfast, they seem to be in no hurry and after breakfast, Gaston starts making polite inquiries into when his guest will be on his way. It's pretty obvious that they intend to stay here for a while.

The only way a leopard can change is when it becomes a rug in someone's den.
If I drift off a bit, just be sure to wake me up. I won't use Gargul's blessing unless I need to. I doubt he'd be in favor of using it frivolously."

About 30 minutes after Owen leaves, (Owen has to walk quite a ways to get out of sight 10 rounds from any meaningful interaction if conflict occurs if, on ground, 3 rounds if flying.) the Drow move out of the bush and approach Gaston's party. Nobody speaks, but Gaston goes to his horse and gets out a small chest. He walks over to the Drow party and places it on the ground. 5000 gold pieces, as agreed. he says after the box is on the ground.

Eclyandry: speaks, The deal did not include the death of my guard, what price do you plan on paying for him?

Gaston:. eh? it was just a guard, I'll put in an extra 100 gold.

Eclyandryl:. He was my cousin, human.

Gaston: Take it or leave it Drow, I don't think your performance was even worth the main amount, but a deal is a deal.

Eclyandryl: smiles and pushes a stray silver lock out of her face, her two guards fire their crossbow bolts at Olrich and James. The bolts hit and both crumple from the potent Drow sleep poison

Eclyandryl: No, Gaston, I believe you owe me a blood debt, your man killed a member of my family and just recompensation is due, either in blood or gold, your choice.

Gaston looks surprised for a moment, All right...All righ...how does another 20,000 sound, I have it in this bag of holding... He pulls out a rod and whispers a command word, the rod flashes and all three of the Drow freeze in their tracks.

Gaston chuckles. You know those rings of luck I gave you? They had a curse on them. It wasn't activated till I pulled this rod out, but it makes you susceptible to its effect. it was bloody expensive to have made, but I think the outlay was warranted...don't you?

he walks over to the first Drow guard and gives him a quick coup-de-grace. you underworld scum should be content with your lot when you get all high and mighty this is what happens.

he begins walking over to the Drow captain...

"If we take everybody back to the tree we're just bringing them a huge political problem with no good solution. It would appear that the Drow have some kind of concept of Wereguild since Eclyandryl was willing to accept a payment. I'd kinda vaguely prefer to not murder Gaston if we can avoid it and turning him over to Eclyandryl will amount to that.

Perhaps we get him to give her payment sufficient for both her cousin and her guard? If he doesn't, THEN we turn him over to her. I'd really, really prefer to not make the Drow enemies if we can possibly avoid it, At worst, they slightly misbehaved for a payment.

After we find out EXACTLY what is going on, of course. Its obvious that they were in agreement but its not obvious WHY. This is a LOT of effort to just embarrass us"

If Atlas arrives in time for the conversation with Leskni, "Hold on, I need a breath before I correct you." Atlas shakes his head while he puts his hands on his knees and bends over trying to catch his breath so that he can speak.

"OK, you apparently don't get it. People like Gaston depend on your sympathies, your 'good' nature to keep on living and keep on hurting and killing people so that they can get what they want. I'm not walking out of here with him alive. Someone has to do this before someone else dies because of our inaction. Stop trying to live in a perfect world and accept the reality of this world and the evil that resides in it. It is our purpose for being here, to put a stop to the evil and to help others. This saves lives. It's not like we're trying to kill an innocent child to save 100 people. We're killing an evil, god I wish I had another word for evil, grr, an evil person to save lives. He is a murderer. We are his justice."

Turning to Carver..."Do you need to cast your spell to check on how evil he is, or was slitting the drow's throat and having that other drow killed a good enough answer for us to kill him?"

Away from the Drow

"While I don't agree with them, I think that many people would consider killing a Drow that had just threatened them to not be an evil act, even if the Drow was helpless at the time. Heck, if that paralysis runs off quickly I'm not sure that I would consider that evil.

And what of his guards? Do we just murder them too?

Mack: fades back into the tall grass.

Carver: comes around the hill and sees the camp before him, Two Drow are standing, one is on the ground with Armand tending to him. Leskni is disarming Gaston, Owen is flying in like an arrow and is about 100 yards away. Mack has positioned himself to flank Gaston should he make a false move but fade back into the tall grass just as easily.

Atlas: is tired of playing goodies two shoes, and opt for a direct end to the threat that Gaston poses

Leskni: you easily tie Gaston's hands, just about the time he breaks your spell, you counsel restraint in the face of evil, to let justice make it's slow ponderous way towards an end.

Armand: Your spell stops the spew of blood and closes the throat of the downed Drow guard, He will be weak for a while, but should make it now.

Owen: the scene is in sight, a Drow on the ground, two standing along with Gaston, Leskni, Armand and Mark approaching or interacting with the group, Carver and Atlas are rounding the hill to join up as well. (you will be there next round). Gaston's men Olrich and James are lying in the grass as well.

前sul: drops the heat metal spell, seeing no use in burning a helpless man.

Gaston curses under his breath, as his will finally overpowers the hold person spell. He pays close attention to the conversation going on around him, his chin lowers down to his chest and he whispers a word to something hidden inside his shirt. A sound like a gong goes off , there is a rushing sound of wind filling in a vacuum, and a flash of light. Gaston is gone. (spellcraft DC 13 Highlight to display spoiler: {looks like word of recall was used, an item perhaps? }.

The Drow are still frozen in place, it seems to have something to do with the rod and the rings the Drow are wearing...both glow with a pale blue light.

Carver: your detect evil ability functions perfectly The Drow Captain, Guard, injured guard and Gaston are all inherently chaotic evil. Eclyandryl gives a funny reading, though. while it shows her as being chaotic evil as well, it is almost like there is an outline of good or maybe the potential for good and law underlying her. You feel that Gargul is telling you that this one is different, that this one may be salvageable.

He calls out, "Don't take those rings off yet! Let me check them out first. Also, we should get our bearings before releasing the drow from the spell.

OoC: Eric, these things happen with recurring antagonists. I expect the drow to be royally pissed when they return from their current state, so stay sharp.

Now, Lets have a discussion with the Drowess and see if she can control her minions or if they should be dispatched as well.
I know you just kept the one from visiting Lord Gargul, but depending up[on her, they may yet go visit him."

Carver holsters his lance but since he normally carries his shield, he makes an effort of hangs it on his packs....
If front of the Drow he speaks to the group, and the Drowess. "Lord Gargul allowed me to see to the heart of the decency of all of them. Gaston and the Guards are truly beyond redemption, but Her ( indicating the Drowess) I believe she is Honorable. She may be twisted, but her word, if she gives it freely, I believe it will be kept. And if she gives her word about her guards, it too will be kept, even if they don't want to themselves. Remember the Drow are Matriarchal, she is the top of the food chain, sort of like a Kracken is in the Ocean.
Leave the rings on the guards for now, but remove hers, we need to have a discussion."

Looking directly at the Drowess, " I, Makellan Skyrunner, give you my personal word, that you shall not be harmed until you decide one way or the other to assist us in finding and removing Gaston, by sending him into the afterlife. Only an offensive action by you or your guards will void this word making you all targets immediately. Will you accept my Word? No, I'm not asking my friends if they agree, because they should know by now that I'll fight to keep my word, even against one of them if it should become necessary and they violate my word."
Carver waits for her reply and just expects the others to back him up.....

And Carver, we have absolutely no reason to kill ANY of these people. Being a Drow and detecting as evil is NOT a crime. The Tree offered to host the meeting with Evil Drow. We must honour that bargain."

Atlas looks about the group and the drow as Leskni and Carver make their cases. "While I'm not as gung-ho as Carver here, I do agree with his approach. Evil is evil, and I'm all for stomping it out of the wold. However, if their leader here has more to her, then I'm willing to have a discussion for the sake of the Tree."

Atlas pauses a moment to consider his words, which any in the group will note is very unusual for him. Then he turns to Leskni, "Leskni, you're smart and you're brave, but you're also a bit too idealistic and naive. We all appreciate your compassion, but I think that you're struggling to see the realistic side of this because of the relationship you have built with this one." Atlas throws his thumb over towards Eclyandryl.

Atlas' face softens a bit before he continues. "We value your compassion and we value the balance you bring to us as a group. Sometimes we can grow a bit too hard in this type of work. However, just like we sometimes soften up when you show us the way, we need you to meet us half-way and harden when we show you the way. There is a balance in this world and we are good at finding it as a team. Please let us handle this one. The evil at work here plays more towards our strength, our cynicism."

He then ties up the henchmen. Armand looks at them. "Not sure if those knots are the best. Anyone want to make sure they can't get away. Mack you want to pat these two down? At the very least, these two have to come back with us, along with all their gear and horses.

Armand then faces the Drow and everyone else. "While I'd like them" indicates the Drow with a wave of his hand, "to accompany us back to explain everything. I'd be willing to settle for sworn statements affixed with their house seal and what not. Or if they have in writing what Gaston's contract with them was that would be nice as well. As for this money," Armand contemplates the chest, "as Gaston said, a deal's a deal. It's the Drow's payment."

Mack: from a spot near the tree the party hears "son of a nutcracker" and "word of recall" in what seems to be Macks' voice, but the little fellow is visible as yesterday's air.

Carver: rages at the loss of Gaston, but turns his attention quickly to the potential threats at hand. He lines out the rules of engagement, giving his word and assurances that no harm may come to the Drow, but that they invite it. Perhaps a bit more tact was in order, but then again, at least all know where they stand.

Atlas: echoes Carver's sentiment about Gaston. if anything he is a bit less cavalier in his opinion of the Drow than Carver. His words to Leskni..admiration or condescending perhaps equal parts both?

Leskni: steps to the paralyzed Drows defence, citing agreements made and common decency

Armand: ever the pragmatist, suggests ways to secure the site once the Paralyzed and sleeping are once more animated. He even suggests letting the Drow keep the gold!

Owen: lands in the camp

前sul: lands on his branch, just digging being an owl.

When Leskni removes the ring from the Guard Captain, he looks at the group suspiciously and moves to attend his lady, taking her ring off as well. She falters a bit then stands straight. motioning the captain behind her and directing him to remove the ring from the other guard.

She turns back to face the party, her eyes alive with emotions. She walks up to Carver, letting her hand touch Leskin in a loving way on her way to him. A smile teases her lips. as she draws herself up her full 5'3 height in front of Carver. Would you strike me down, Paladin? I am but how I am, I can be no more or no less. I mean you and yours no harm, in fact....after getting to know Leskni and your group, I felt that taking this job was a mistake, but I would not have missed it for the world! Truly, my people speak of the terrible paladin, the killer of babies, who eats Drow and buries others alive. It was one of your order who broke my people long ago...it was the stories and your stature that made me cleave to Leskni, interest as well, but also, do your kind feel jealousy? it seems not. My culture, my religion, and my gods say I should hate you, but I do not. Why? My foolish sister had a slave one time, he used to entertain us with riddles and stories, he said one time a quote that I did not understand until today. " I have seen the enemy and they are us" it keeps coming back to me when I look at you, and I cannot for the life of me explain why. In my culture, if our positions were reversed you would be dead, I feel safe with you, though, indeed safer than I usually feel at House D'gul. She looks thoughtful for a moment, then nods her head. Take us back with you to the Tree of Parting, I would give a statement about the events of recent times. I have other things to discuss as well.

"You will excuse me, but I intend to cast detect magic and go over Gaston's men and his campsite. I do not intend to investigate you so if you would stand to the side...I'm sure we can get going shortly."

He turns to Atlas a mischievous smile on his lips. "Hey Atlas, look I found you a mount for your very own you can keep it." Armand indicates Gaston's horse.

Armand will then cast detect magic and go over Gaston's horse, saddlebags, the henchman, their horses and saddlebags, and the remains of the campsite.

I'm sometimes more talk than action, especially when it comes to killing. I don't have any hard feelings towards the drow, and am more with Leskni on them, as hard as it is for me to not always back Atlas. Even Gaston, though I despise him and would have loved to see him stripped and sent packing, I'd probably have a hard time out-right killing him.

I come out of the shadows to help make sure Gaston's henchmen are patted down well, and aren't hiding anything. In fact, they should probably stripped down to their skivvies.

(Not sure what to roll here.... rolled 15 on a d20.)

"Thanks Armand, but I'm not riding around while the rest of you walk. Horses would be a good investment for us if we're planning to start getting out and around more. The quicker we can respond to threats to the Tree the better we are. Why don't we stable the horse and maybe use some of our gold to buy a few more."

Mack: lends a hand getting things ready to move, disarming the henchmen and making sure they are securely bound.

Carver: unswayed by words, action suits him, Fist Soldier that he is, arguments are for lawyers not fighting folk. .

Atlas: is a bit peeved that they didn't slaughter the drow, but hides it well and even hints about perhaps getting some financial assistance in purchasing mounts for the party. Eclyandryl catches that and smiles. Perhaps...if things go smoothly at the Tree, you may find yourself with money to burn. she says cryptically.

Leskni: apologizes for her friend to which Eclyandryl replies Strangely, if he were one of my people I would have him slain, but he is not, his kind have fought my kind for ages, he has shown remarkable restraint given the circumstances, I take no offence...No, my sweet...My people need me, my eldest sister is entering her senescence and I am set to rule in her stead. besides, memories are long for both our people, I will not receive the same tolerance from the rest of humanity that I have received from you.

Armand: you cast detect magic on all the assembled belongings and the horses. Gastons fine warmblood mare's feet glow in the light of your spell. and a scroll glows in gastons pack. Olrichs weapons are nice...masterwork even...but not magical. and James stuff...well it's apparent that Gaston is a mizer with the coin. as the spell continues the dwoner on the horse's feet resolves out to be a faint Transmutation aura. another round shows that it is the horse shoes that are enchanted.

Owen: has a private conversation with Atlas as you travel back toward the tree.

Armand see gets Olrich and James into the wagon along with all the camp gear. The wagon is looking fuller, he eyes the crowd. I suggest we all sit in on each so that there is no confusion on what happens and so that we can each ask questions if we need. Anyone have any concerns with this approach?"

(OOC, Mack/Eric has not posted our 'house/headquarters' to the Tree wiki page, at least not that I can see..-and we need to add the now useless magic junk to the party treasure to sell off, and we need to go over the party treasure and see what needs to be sold off so we can divide that up..oh wait, Mack/Eric takes care of that..and he is going to be out next week...)

"Well we have a 'guest room' on the second floor or our headquarters. YOU know the one with no windows that the door locks from the outside(E). There is a mostly empty storage room on the ground floor (4) And there is an empty room on our ground floor where we stay.(11)" Armand turns to the Drow nearby. "But I'm sure those are inadequate for your needs, as we have NO servants. I'm sure your rooms at the Tavern are still available."

Armand address Atlas and the others. "In any case we probably need to leave things up to Miles, or Laughingwater, or Ciyradyl, or Folbre, or all of them."

"Once we have questioned her Eclyandryl can stay in my quarters, if that is acceptable to her. Pella can watch over her"
