The House That Crazy Built

DM RobC - "Don't worry, Osul-dog..... I feel like that ALL the time."
Monday February 22nd, 2016 7:30:49 AM

There is some minor talk about the headband and what to do with it. Owen identifies is an an Ishgaran Headband of Charisma +1.

Armand is quite sure that Atlas has been afflicted with a curse, and will not heal naturally.

Staring more and more at the black doorway, the spellcasters in the group eventually all share the opinion that it is an extradimensional gateway of some kind.

Finally enough is enough and Carver and Osul bravely lead the party forward.

Inside the little shack, it is surprisingly spacious. Not just as a result of decorating mind you. The interior of the shack is an extradimensional space! You can clearly see out the doorway behind you that you just entered through. Looking about the party realise they are standing in a vast hall some 100ft x 200ft space. Tufts of luminescent moss are scattered about the stone walls, floors and ceiling, giving the whole area a dim green light.

Along the west wall are a litany of books piled haphazardly. Any true librarian would be shocked by the mess. Not a shelf in sight and no sign of organization. Books spread open, with more and more piled atop. Hundreds of books that might take a lifetime to read or at least days to sift through.

Along the south wall - the wall the party currently stand along - sits a very shabby wooden bed and mattress. The bed is badly stained, and alongside what looks to be several chamber pots all to the point of overflowing. Anyone who dared to sleep in such a mess would require no sense of smell and no fear of disease.

Along the east wall three large glass vats of a yellowy-green liquid. Floating - or perhaps hanging - in each vat is a different sort of monstrosity. A minotaur whose arms and legs have been replaced with tree branches. A halfling’s body, but with a large plant attached where the head should be. And in the last, what can only be described as some sort of sapling, but with numerous hands and feet attached to its branches.

There is a fourth vat - empty of liquid. In it sits a young male elf. He is sitting on the floor of the vat and sobbing into his hands.

Along the northern wall sit numerous tables, each piled with alchemical instruments. A fireplace with a cauldron bubbling over. Bones of all sort of creatures lie scattered on the tables and floor, along with a variety of plants in various pots. And walking between the tables muttering away is a balding surface drow. Although he has some tufts of long greying hair, more scalp than hair can be seen on his head. His clothes are tattered and stained, and barely hold themselves to his frail body.

He slowly edges toward the vat holding the elf. Stealth 10 (d20) Not to far, he only goes 20 feet from the party. He continues to whisper. "How do we want to handle this? On seeing the older elf and the vatted monstrosities, Owen realizes that this could quickly become a grand battle. Hoping to forestall that possibility, he steps forward and hurls a handful of colored sand at the surface drow. It flashes into the spastic lights of a Color Spray spell. (The drow needs to make a DC 15 Will save to avoid the effect. Unless surface drow are more susceptible?)

If the drow is stunned by the effect, he calls out "Quickly, bind him and take him outside!"
If not, he says "I need more practice."

My next instinct is to let my OCD take over, and I slowly make my way towards the books to start lining them up at least against the wall in a somewhat decent order. DM RobC - "He might be a victim too!!"
Tuesday February 23rd, 2016 7:48:33 AM

Armand starts to stealthily move around the edge of the room, closer to where the elf sits in the empty vat.

Osul-dog also walks close enough to the vats - but not TOO close.

Both Armand and Osul notice that the creatures in the vats show signs of life. The halfling's limbs twitch in the green goo, and the eyes of the minotaur follow your movement.

Holding up travelling salesmen no longer suffices for some of the party. Without so much as a warning or chance at diplomacy, the party move to attack a poor, elderly, unarmed, unwell surface drow in his own home. They could have tried talking nicely, detecting if he was good or evil, or determining if he was a prisoner or not. They could have even have readied spells to fire on the off chance he should do something aggressive. Nope, our heroes choose to attack first and ask questions later. (OOC: Did I lay that on thick enough? :P )

Owen is first. He prepares to cast a Color Spray towards the surface drow but stops. He recalls that the range on the Color Spray spell is only 15ft, and as mentioned previously, the room is some 200ft long. He will need to get much closer before he can cast that particular spell to any effect. (Highlight to display spoiler: {You may keep your spell as uncast, but lose your action for that round})

Atlas joins in, charging ahead but cautions they party about the elf still sitting alone in the vat.

Mack wants to get a better look at the alchemy things, however they are on the other side of the large room. The books are close though, so he impulsively heads towards them for a better look. But when the others look to start a combat, he makes himself scarce.

Now closer, the party can hear the surface drow softly talking to himself

Leskni doesn't really know why the others are attacking this poor chap. She tries to start a dialogue with him in the hopes of calming things back down.

“Must be an answer. Must be an answer. Must be an answer” he mutters as he looks up to see the approaching party. He looks at each of you carefully. Mack notices the surface-drow doesn't look at him however.

“Interesting. Different to the other ones. Not figments. Not figments. Real people. Curious. Why are they here? Why are they here? Why are they here?” he mutters to himself “Carrying weapons. Narrows things. Assassins? Too many. Too revealed. Diplomatic delegation? Too armed. Want to attack. Thieves?” he pauses and squints at the party. “Thievesssss....”

His muttering becomes incomprehensible for a moment, but then clears up again “Maybe fresh material is missing component. No. Tried fresh. Many times. Many times. Maybe materials untested? Yes, yes, yes, yes. One is small linotaur. Tail could be interesting. Interesting. One is centaur. Centaur ribs could be very useful. Yes, yes, yes. Subject wouldn’t survive removal. Loss of life acceptable. For greater good. For greater good”

With that he casts a spell, creating a flaming ball of fire in the middle of the room

Mack sneaks closer, hopeful that this surface drow is yet to notice him. It's true, the drow hasn't even looked towards Mack yet. To his side rest a pile of books. Oh to reach out and read them!

Carver draws his new lance and gets closer. The party know full well how fast he can move when he wants to, so it probably won't be a surprise what he does next.

Armand quickly takes a step away from the vats. There are just some creatures you don't want to get too close to. He announces the party as representitives of assorted deities and power, commanding the elf cease all hostilities.

"Cease and disist hostilities? You are in my home. You cease! You leave! Go. Go now"

Osul resumes his humanoid form and lends weight to Armand's attempted diplomacy. Together they point out that he may have been killing the forrest

The drow smiles broadly, wided eyed and nodding to Armand "No no no no no. Not dying. UN-dying. Important difference. Yes. Important. Important. Can make it so no tree or plant ever dies again. Forest will live forever. No plant or tree will ever die again. Just need to adjust formula. Slight adjustment. Don't think it will take many more subjects to perfect. But then, nature ever more. You could help? Yes, yes yes. Just need more subjects. Could pay you something?"

Leskni listens intently to what is being said, whilst studying the surface drow. Her gut feel is that if this guy was ever sane it was a long time ago. Perhaps it's the solitude, perhaps he ate or drank something that put him round the bend, or perhaps spending too much time in the Culverwood isn't healthy? Whatever the case, this guy is not in full control of his faculties. No sane person would live in these conditions, nor allow their own body to waste away like this. This kind of crazy however could also make him unpredictable.

Atlas stops in his tracks at the sight of the fiery ball. It's not a spell he's familiar with, and the last thing he wants is for the vats to explode. He talks a tough game, checking to see if the 'crazy wizard' doesn't want to lose his head.

Owen moves up and casts a sleep spell towards the drow. He is sure he cast the spell with the proper incantation, however, it doesn't seem to have had any effect.
Knowl Local DC10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Like elves, surface drow are immune to magical sleep effects}

Leskni tries to cast a calm emotions spell. She isn't hopeful of success, but is surprised to see the elf visibly sigh and relax (Will Save vs DC19: 18 = Fail!).

"What was I thinking? Thinking. Thinking. Something about formula? Yes. Yes, yes. Formula. Need to get formula finished" he mutters away.

The creatures in the vats have meanwhile grown more and more agitated. With the shatter of glass, the minotaur-thing bursts from the vat. Green fluid flows around it and gushes onto the floor.

The halfling-thing with the plant like head follows suit. It bashes its head so hard against the vat as to crack it open. The small creature steps out of the vat right next to Osul!

Finally the multilimbed sapling - a mess of many hands and feet - also bursts from from its containment.

There's no definitive way to tell whether these creatures are friend or foe, but from Osul's perspective that halfling thing sure doesn't look friendly.

He speaks in a hushed tone to the other party members: I don't like the looks of those creatures, but it seems like we may be able to talk to the drow. He'll probably be mad if we end up fighting his experiments, so let's try this plan: keep your distance from the creatures, just give them space. Leskni, Armand, head forward and talk to the drow. I'll cast an illusion that makes everything south of the fireball look peaceful and normal. Make sure you stay quiet unless you're in front of the image; whispering should be fine."

Then Owen tears up a piece of fleece and casts a silent image eighty feet long, ten feet tall, and ten feet deep: from Y23/24 to AN23/24. The image is like a painting from the perspective of the drow, and Owen shifts it as best he can when the drow moves. It is opaque at the back, depicting the walls of the room, the bookshelves, the door, the bed, and the unshattered vats (I'm banking on the drow being distracted or crazy enough not to notice that part). The creatures sit calmly in their vats and the various party members sheathe their weapons and stand casually. The figment-images of Leskni and Armand approach deferentially (assuming that you guys go with the plan), and if Leskni and Armand pass through the image Owen makes their figment-image disappear. To make this image more believable, the various foreground objects actually stand outwards toward the drow, shifting as he shifts.

Owen watches to see if the fireball moves through his image, ready to add it if need be. Then he moves to Z27 while concentrating on his image.

Mack stealthily advances. Casting a spell with a verbal element would almost certainly make too much noise, and gesticulating with his hand on a somatic spell would likewise give his position away. At half speed, he makes it to V28 (2 x 10ft moves)

Owen casts a silent image to cover the party's approach (OOC: Your image sounds far too detailed for the spell. The spell notes "an object, creature, or force". I'm not sure multiple objects and creatures can be depicted). Either way, the drow will not be able to see through it unless he interacts with it. He then moves closer to the elf.

Armand continues forward challenging the drow thinking. "Yes, cleric of Gargul. Yes, yes, yes. You, you can understand. Trees can live for centuries. Many many centuries. But what about other plants? Hmm? Chopped up, burnt down, damaged by so called civilisation. The plants need help. Yes. Gargul wouldn't want things to die before their time. He wants things to go on. That, that is what I am trying to do. Trees and plants that will never die."

Osul moves away from the halfling thing and towards Owen. As he does, the halfling thing lashes out but misses! (AoO. Hit AC11 - Miss!)

Atlas thinks that the plan is just about as crazy as the surface drow. Still, he goes along with it, trying to get the weird creatures to follow him.

Leskni casts an Enlarge Spell on Carver, making him huge!

Supersized Carver charges down to the other end of the room, ready to make a few puncture wounds in the drow

Well, it looks like battle it is! And I seem to be in a safe, but unhelpful spot.

Leskni looks like she might be in trouble in a minute here. Actually, we all might be. I take my full movement in her direction (move to X32), and cast Magic Fang on myself.

I'm guessing remaining stealthy now is near impossible, but doesn't hurt to try:

(d20+14(-2)-5 stealth check of 22) (I added the -5 penalty for speed, but sure how to penalize the spell casting)

(d20+16-2 perception check of 25)

Cursed: -2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks!
Magic Fang: +1 to hit and damage for 1 attack/round; rounds remaining: 10

Armand continues to advance. "We have not even exchanged names and you continue to cast. What ails you there is just myself and you here. It's not like there is anyone else, here like a paladin preparing to smite evil, or a wizard preparing to dispel magic. My name is Armand and yes I'm a cleric of Gargul. And I agree that some things have their lives taken too early. However, it is also not good for things to go on forever. Why that would be godlike and you don't want to offend the gods do you?" Diplomacy 10 (d20+9).

Having failed his spellcraft Armand advances to AH14. Reflex save 3, (d20+2). "Ouch, Hey what's the deal? The ground is all point and sharp here like it's filled with caltraps. I thought we were going to have a discussion? This hardly the way to treat a lone traveler and representative of Gargul and Maab."

OOC: My sincere apologies for missing a post guys Highlight to display spoiler: {My new work team took me to lunch and I ended up with food poisoning :(}

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Mack drops his stealth to move towards Leskni. He casts Magic Fang in anticipation that things are about to get physical. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Magic Fang has a Verbal component, and "you must be able to speak in a strong voice". Kinda ruins your stealth})

Armand continues to advance and tries some diplomacy. It's a bit hard to tell what kind of diplomacy he is attemping while holding a glaive and backing a man into a corner. The drow looks at him increduously "Noone else here? And I'M the crazy one! Crazy crazy crazy. You didn't just come in with a linotaur, and some humans? And it's not like that huge centaur is invisible! I'm not blind man! And I'm not deaf either! I may not be able to see behind that illusion your friend cast, but I know a battle when I hear it! Take one more step and I'll have to defend myself! I'm warning you!"

Armand feels the spikes sink into his feet, and the pain will no doubt slow him down (Armand's speed is cut by half)

Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {The drow has absolutely no trust of anything Armand is saying. What's more, he now feels threatened}

Leskni goes for total defense and moves out of the way. Doing so she provokes the Minotaur-thing. It slams a mssive fist into her hide (Hit AC24. Crit not confirmed with AC8. Leskni takes 7pts damage and must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!)

Atlas knows a fight when he sees one. BATTLE!!! He swings his sword directly at the halfling thing, cutting one of its many hands from it

Osul goes to support the others. He advances behind Atlas and casts a spell at the halfling! (Highlight to display spoiler: {Whilst you can draw a weapon as part of a move action, you can't draw objects. Retrieving a wand is a move action}). The halfling sways in the breeze but otherwise looks unharmed.

Knoweldge Dungeoneering DC17 - Highlight to display spoiler: {The halfling thing looks to be immune to non-lethal damage, such as that dealt by the Storm Burst}

Owen isn't quite ready to engage in the battle yet. He prepares to move away should anything move towards him

Carver decides now is the time to free that trapped elf, he charges the vat whilst shouting a warning to the elf. His newfound lance easily pierces the glass vat, shattering it. The elf kneels inside, his hands covering his head from the glass shards. Carver can hear the elf quietly sobbing.

Despite Leskni's warning, Carver then delivers what can only be assumed as a threat to the drow: "you're next". That threat, couple with Armand's advancement with a glaive come across as 'aggressive actions'.

The enemy act...

The drow now free of the Calm spell realises the situation he is in. He moves the sphere closer to both Carver and Armand, and then casts another spell. (Carver and Armand to make a Ref save vs DC15 or be Entangled! If Armand gets entangled he also takes 1pt damage for being in a spikey area)

Sapling-thing is inadvertently in the range of the entanglement and gets snared (Ref Save: Nat 1!). It 5ft steps out of the area

Halfling thing also 5ft steps, and now the pair flank Atlas! They attack. Sapling-thing manages to land a blow (Hit AC21. Miss AC18. Atlas takes 10pts damage and must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!)

Minotaur thing moves towards Owen and Osul. Owen was prepared, however, and easily moves away! The minotaur thing now only has Osul in range, and attacks him! (Hit AC16. Osul takes 5pts damage and must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!)

(d20+2(-2) sense motive check of 7 - Failed)

I feel like this is a suicide move, but I need to keep the minotaur from further surrounding Osul and Atlas. I move closer (to AB31), and pull out my sai (in my left hand). (If there's any way for me to approach him without taking an AoO, I would definitely do so. I don't see a way to do that though due to my distance away.)

(flurry of blows: d20+5(-2) for each blow, and d4-1 damage
Hit AC 22 for 2 damage (+5?), and AC 23 for 2 damage (+5?))

"This is not going to be pretty...." I mumble very concerned under my breath.

"Armand! Get those healing spells ready!!!!" ;)

OOC:
Do I know what the minotaur creature's reach is?

I'm not sure if I get flanking yet or not. The +5 to both damage is only if I get flanking on the minotaur-thing. The flanking rules are a little confusing since they also seem to take into account ranged weapons and spells. For example, I can throw my sai. Does that make me a flanking threat, even if I chose NOT to throw my sai? I have my sai in my left hand as a potential threat, but I'm not using it (unless as part of my flurry).

Also, my damage is 1d4-1 (minimum of 1), with then a +1 for Magic Fang. I rolled a 0. I assume that goes to a 1 BEFORE I add in the +1? Or do I roll 1d4 instead of 1d4-1? For me, who does very little damage, it DOES make a difference. ;)

Mack tumbles towards the minotaur thing, and delivers a solid blow on it. Hopefully being so close to it, he will draw its focus away from the others.

Armand channels some healing energy - mostly for himself - and then hops up on the nearby table, delivering a few pointed words at the drow. "And you are an ignorant liar" the drow retorts, crossing his arms.

Osul apologises what what he is about to do, and then tries to whack the halfling thing with his quarterstaff. The blow is easily brushed aside.

Owen then fires a deadly scorching ray at the minotaur thing. It explodes in a burst of decay, showering Mack in its remains! (Mack must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!) Owen then practically moonwalks across the battlefield he's so proud of himself.

Leskni has a few choice words but keeps them to herself. She edges closer to Mack and begins casting a spell to make him that much bigger.

Atlas tries to fight back against the creatures surrounding him. Their hideous forms clearly disgust him, and affect his concentration.

Osul doesn't want to stick around and take another beatdown like that again. He withdraws from the combat to seek a safer place to stand.

Mack moves down and around, so as to flank the halfling-thing with Atlas (Highlight to display spoiler: {Since you have reach and the halfling doesn't, there's no need for the acrobatics check. You can get within 10ft without having to worry}. His movement was fine, but his attack left a bit to be desired.

Atlas then directs his attacks at the halfling thing. The first hit is nasty, but the second one cleaves straight through the halfling-thing. It explodes is a burst of green guts! (Atlas must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!)

Carver backs up a bit and then leaps over the spikey area. The lawful good centaur smiles at the surface drow (Highlight to display spoiler: {Note that normally you can't use the run action over difficult terrain; Carver being huge means even 5ft stepping south he is still 2/3 in some difficult terrain. Since you missed yesterday's post however it seem fair to allow your move this time}

With the halfling thing already down, Leskni steps southward and fires her crossbow at the sapling-thing. Unfortunately she finds it a harder target to hit (Highlight to display spoiler: {There's a -4 penalty for targeting a creature engaged in melee combat, unless you have the Precise Shot feat})

Armand gets a bit closer and delivers a touch attack to stagger the drow. He calls out to Carver to let him know his plan - to put this drow to sleep.

Owen moves to cover Osul, and readies to cast a spell at whatever might give chase.

Mack tumbles closer, but even with his large sized fists he's unable to land a good attack against the sapling thing.

Armand moves back on to the table and determines that this drow is beyond redemption and must die! His glaive does a good job of delivering on this promise.

Carver runs up and down the side of the room to build up momentum before thrusting his lance at the vile drow. He must be distracted by all that is going on, as his attack falls short.

Atlas brushes the halfling goop from his shoulders, before turning his attention to the sapling thing. It proves to be harder to hit than the halfling.

Leskni rushes northwards to get a better look at what is going on in the other end of the room.

Osul reaches for his CLW potion and downs the sweet nectar. He feels much better for it.

Owen gets to a better position to cast a ray at the sapling thing, but like Atlas, he finds it a hard target to hit.

The enemy act...

The pair unload on the sapling thing, which promptly explodes under the onslaught. (Atlas must make a DC11 Fort Save vs Zombie Rot!)

Owen holds on to his Ray spell, not feeling confident in his ability to hit targets at range right now.

Armand's skin turns a sickly dark colour as the disease rapidly festers in his blood stream. He backs away another 5 ft and then attacks the surface drow. His attack might have missed, but he is confident the drow will meet Gargul before he does. (Note that with Con damage "multiply your total Hit Dice by the Ability Damage penalty and subtract that amount from your current and total hit points". 2pts CON damage at level 4 = 8pts* damage, putting Armand at 24/24HP. *EDITTED AND CORRECTED :) )

Carver runs back and forth, charging the drow with his lance. This time he couldn't have hoped for a better attack. The drow was obviously preoccupied with Armand, and Carver is able to deliver a solid blow.

Leskni waits until the last moment and then casts a Lesser Confusion spell on the drow. (Will Save vs DC18: 16 + 2 Racial vs Enchantment = 18 = Pass!)

Mack moves as far north as he can, whilst evading the entanglement. He casts his eye over to the elf in the broken tank. The elf is still kneeling on the ground, arms over his head, sobbing and rocking back and forth. (*See Note below)

Carver easily throws of the effects of the drows spell. He repeats his charge and thrust routine, but this time misses his target.

Leskni tries to blind the drow, but to no avail (Fort Save vs DC18: 20 = Pass).

Armand doesn't feel like the spell has done anything to him. He goes on the defensive however, by casting a sanctuary spell on himself.

Owen's mind is on the elf in the broken vat. He heads due east with a view to get to the elf next round. As he does so, his Silent Image disappears.

Atlas heads to the northwest to make his way around the entanglement (*See Note below)

Osul closes, wary that the group should not assume anything just yet.

The drow acts...

He sneers at Carver, then at Armand and finally at Leskni. Armand's skin shows that the drow's toxin has taken hold. The only one who has really hurt him so far has been Carver. The drow casts a spell, bringing a ball of fire into existence right under Carver's feet! (Carver to make a Ref save vs DC16 or take 16pts fire damage!)

Spells are running low on both sides. Can the party of 7 overcome 1 caster? Surely when the drow has cast all his spells he will be easy pickings.

Mack advances (quicksilver-ish) to where the fight still goes on.

Armand steps closer and swings his glaive. It ruins the Sanctuary spell he had put in place, and what's more, doesn't damage the drow.

Leskni resorts to her crossbow. That weapon must be cursed, as it misses its target again! I blame the crossbow.

Atlas moves as close as he can to the drow, closing in very quickly.

Carver dodges the flaming sphere and rather than fall back, continues his assault! With the flaming sphere still in his path, his huge form moves through it (Carver to make 2 x Ref saves vs DC16. Fail 1 = 12pts damage. Fail 2 = 24pts damage. Pass both = 0 damage) His efforts were worth it, as the drow is soon skewered on the end of his lance.

"Gar... Gargul! I... I..." And with that, the surface drow's body falls lifelessly to the ground.

Owen turns his attention to the other elf in the room. Now closer he can see that the elf is almost as malnourished as the deceased surface drow. Owen can easily see the elf's ribs protruding under his skin. "Don't.. don't kill me. P-please" he is sobbing quietly "I want to go home"

Carver succumbed to getting burnt once more by the flaming sphere before he hit the Drow. As the Drow drops, Carver says a short prayer to Gargul and lays hands on himself again.
With the Drow's death the flaming sphere should fade as well as the magic that he cast on the ground. Carver wills the spell to drop from himself. (enlarge person) If his will can't make it fade, "Lose the Growth please, I don't think we need it anymore...."
Carver goes to the area the Drow was working and sees if he can help.

DM RobC - "Well done Carver!"
Wednesday March 9th, 2016 5:47:34 AM

Mack is on edge. Something doesn't feel right. It could be the extradimensional space they are in, the vats that held the abominations, or perhaps its the dead drow. He can't put his finger on it. He sets to looking about very cautiously. It will take some time to investigate the entire room however. Is there any particular area he wishes to inspect first (Also, if you wish to search an area in detail you are allowed to Take20, meaning you treat the result of the die roll as if you had rolled a perfect 20)

Armand looks at the surface drow as the body slides free from the end of Carver's lance. He casts a Detect Magic spell and looks about the tables and the surface drow. The drow's corpse has a lingering magically aura that is quickly fading. The table in the north-east was cleared abruptly during the last combat, but Armand does notice two items on the nearby ground radiating some magic: a ring and a bag.

Atlas congratulates Carver on dealing with the surface drow. He then moves to pat down the corpse. The drow actually has very little on his possession. The 'clothes' he wears are nothing more than rags. Atlas has seen street beggars with better clothing. Personal hygiene also appears to be low on the list of the surface drows priorities. His body has numerous sores and rashes. Nothing terminal, but all certainly preventable.

Leskni and a few of the others try and treat Armand's disease. Unfortunately, there is nothing they can do right now. The disease must run its course. Perhaps tomorrow they may be able to assist him? (Highlight to display spoiler: {Heal checks can help, but only when the subject has to make a save}

Mack looks over the alchemical equipment on the tables. The equipment may be a little dated and used, but everything appears to be in working order (Treat as an Alchemist's Lab)

Carver waits for the magic effects of the surface drow to fade, and then moves to talk to the elf. Owen is ready to escort the elf free from this room, but Carver wants to talk first. There would be nothing worse than going through all this trouble and then setting a contagious person free.

The elf leans into Owen to support his weight. Owen can barely tell he is supporting the elf at all, he is so malnourished and under-weight. With what strength he has, the elf raises his face to look at Carver "I .. I didnt do anything, I swear it. May Gargul himself curse me for all eternity if I'm lying"

The elf goes on to explain that at some point - "Forgive me, my mind isn't with me. I'm not sure what day it is" - he was kidnapped from the woods and taken here. He swears that he doesn't think he has been infected with anything - "He took some blood from me, but never infected me with anything I don't think". He tells how the others were here when he woke up "A minotaur, a halfling and a human. They.. they didn't make it"" He looks to the puddles on the floor where the 'things' exploded, and then looks up at Owen. "Do.. do you have any water? Just a sip would be nice"

Owen is ready to start looking through the library, but advises on perhaps healing everyone first.

Osul then puts forward a suggestion for progress. Search the library, quell the source of the sickness, search the drow and what remains of his subjects, contact the emissary and then await a response. A concise list!

Armand gathers everyone close by and channels some much needed healing. Gargul must be pleased with his efforts, as his channels are particular powerful today. The unnamed elf does not seem to benefit from the healing however.

Armand then draws attention to the fireplace. Indeed, there is a cauldron boiling away on the fireplace and small wafts of green smoke rise from it.

After finding nothing I can do with the alchemist's kit to help with any of the ailments we're suffering, I first check the cauldron / fireplace area for traps before anyone messes with it (Take 20).

Once I make sure that area is safe, if no one is requesting I check any other areas for traps, I turn my attention towards the book. I'm guessing it will take quite some time to go thru them, and see if there is anything of interest for anyone in the party. I start sorting them in any relevant way that I can. (I'll Take 20 as I spend however much time is needed in that area. I would almost think that could take hours.)

And, Armand, trying diplomacy on a crazy man AFTER I had already tried, failed, and told you it wouldn't work. What kind of nonsense is that?"

"One of my major contributions to combat is shrinking those who want to be shrunk and growing those who want to be larger. Could EVERYBODY please tell me if they want to stay the same size, shrink, or grow? Growing smaller makes you harder to hit and you may hit more often, depending if you rely on brute strength or finesse for hitting. Means you hit less hard, though. Growing larger, assuming you use strength, means you hit as often and a LOT harder. You also can reach out and touch somebody a lot further away. But it DOES mean that you're easier to hit"

Carver continues to examine the magic items, trying to determine what they do.

DM RobC - "Well done Carver!"

Mack is the first to check out the cauldron and fireplace area, with help from Atlas. The closer they get to the cauldron, the stronger the smell that comes from it. Neither can be sure if it is or isn't the source of a lot of the death outside, but you sure wouldn't drink from it.

Armand looks for a lid to seal the pot, however none is easily found. Instead he opts to put the fire out. It takes several castings of Create Water before the wood no longer burns, and may take some time for the pot to stop boiling.

Owen kindly offers the elf some water and rations, though cautions the elf to take it slowly. The elf nods as best he can before taking some big sips from the waterskin "Bless you, friend. Thankyou" Owen feels the mans body relax. Not in a dangerous way mind you, but as if weeks of stress and pressure is leaving his body and he is starting to feel safe once more. "Faelyn. My name is Faelyn. I hail from Anti. It's just west of the woods" Faelyn starts picking pieces from the rations and stuffing them into his mouth. Not a crumb is wasted.

Carver attempts to identify the items. He determines the Bag to be a Bag of Holding Type I and the Ring to be a Ring of Sustenance.

Leskni has been holding to something for a while, and finally let's it out. Talking about tactics, diplomacy, and the use of her spells. She agrees with Atlas that it might be best if the party stay inside to rest and recover.

Carver tries to placate the linotaur as best he can. There's never a ball of yarn when you need one.

Osul joins the search by the books. He discovers 3 unusual scrolls and a rod of some kind. The books look to cover an assortment of topics, but focus largely on necromancy and botany.

Mack starts by looking over the few books that are on the table nearest the 'library'. The one that draws most of his attention looks to be a journal of some kind...
Subject #71-A
Fewer travellers come close to here any more, so had to travel much further to find a subject. Managed to catch a pixie. Though not an optimal test subject, she will have to do.
...
Removed subjects wings and affixed them to a Heliamphora plant. Whilst the subject looks to be in pain, the plant appears in good health. Finally some progress! Tomorrow I will try brewing a new formula from the Heliamphora-hybrid in the hopes it will help the fey fully transform.
...
Subject died before I could brew a new formula. I KNEW I should have bandaged her better. This is what happens when you rush things.

Subject #72-A
Found a man wandering in the forest. Had him follow me back and then offered him a drink. Perhaps imbibing the formula will have a different result?
...
Subject deceased. Formula burnt a hole clear through his throat. Found some food in his belongings, so the day isn’t all bad.

Subject #73-A
Managed to capture a halfling today. Will see how the formula works on her. So close to success. I can feel it.
...
Injected subject. Subject screams a lot. Should have invested in sound proof containers.
...
Subject has begun transforming into a Bladderwort plant! Remarkable. I might finally have the answer.
...
Subject deceased. Either dose was too strong or subject was too weak. Transformation stopped at around 45%. Though subject still has a rudimentary halfling appearance, her face and arms are plantlike.
...
Reanimated subject. Even though not fully a plant, she may be the closest I have come to plant-immortality. Why is it that I can reanimate flesh but not plant matter? I am closing in on the answer.

I am positive - moreso than ever - that the secret to plant-immortality lies in the bodies of mortal men and women. The sacrifice of these people to my research will see them remembered as heroes. And I will be remembered as the man who made it so that no plant ever died again”

Under the mattress, and slightly stained, he does find a few items of interest: some boots, a couple of robes, and two wands.

Mack can't help but feel sad reading through the diary. How many 'subjects' were tortured here in the name of a mad scientist? He continues to explore the collection of books.

Owen makes sure Faelyn is ok. The elf is just grateful to have something to eat and drink. He won't be going anywhere for a while. Owen sets to looking at the scrolls first, identifying them as a Scroll of Cure Moderate Wounds, Water Breathing, and Neutralise Poison respectively.

Mack and Owen note a lack of any kind of spellbook. Based on the druidic nature of the spells cast by the surface drow, it is likely he didn't require such a book. The books they find are all non-fiction: manuals and guidebooks, encyclopaedias and handbooks on the topics of death, life, plants, anatomy and autopsies.

Osul doesn't see any humour in this situation. What the mad scientist was doing here was just plain evil. No, it's beyond evil. In his mind this is something else entirely.

Leskni throws out the theory that perhaps the surface drow wasn't the cause of the blight the party have seen in the Culverwood. Perhaps he was even trying to fight it?

Atlas' gut tells him that the surface drow is a part of this in some way or another. He just has to be. It would be too big a coincidence to find him here.

Carver offers to carry anything the party wish to salvage. Being a large quadruped he can carry quite a lot and still be faster on his feet than anyone.

Carver steps outside, walking straight through the doorway the party used to enter this place. The air is certainly fresher outside, and by the looks of things, time has passed naturally. That can always be a concern when you travel between extra-dimensional places. The blight that surrounds the cottage is still there, as are the remains of the creature the party killed to enter. Carver does note the distinct lack of any green smoke coming from the chimney.

Armand takes apart the bedding, and proudly shows off the stinky items he found. He manages to identify one of the wands - Wand of Endure Elements (Druid CL1) - 50 charges

He then asks Faelyn how long he's been here and how he got here "I.. I don't know how long I've been here. There isnit any way to tell when the days start or end. Last I remember is going for a walk on the forests edge and then waking up here. Maybe I haven't woken up and this is just a terrible nightmare?"

Mack spends the rest of the afternoon going through the library and the rest of the drow's items. He manages to find a name repeatedly mentioned in the journal, as well as on the first page of several of the books: "Drachen". Most likely the name of the surface drow. He picks a book at random to read at a later time: "Cross-species genetics for ecological succession"

Leskni manages to identify one of the wands - Wand of Faerie Fire (Druid CL1) - 50 charges - as well as the boots - Boots of Elvenkind.

Both sets of robes and the rod remain unidentified.

Osul tries to keep a pragmatic view of things. You will never see all the Wold has to offer, nor find the limits that others will go to for their own reasons.

Owen checks over the alchemy lab. He determines that it's still in quite good condition, despite its appearance. (OOC: Standard alchemy lab. 200gp value and weighing 40lbs)

Atlas heads outside to keep Carver company. The pair casually walk around the perimeter of the house. Carver steps into the house for a moment to let the others know things haven't changed outside. They keep up a patrol for a few hours. At least until the sun starts to set.

As they do one last patrol, Atlas notices patches of grass starting to regrow in the decayed area. The Culverwood is a resilient forest.

Armand looks around. "This place seems stable but I have no knowledge about how such places work. It is like a bag of holding? In which case it would be stable. I'm guessing that her knowledge nature 16 isn't enough to tell her if the blight has indeed been lifted.

"I'd suggest we stay here a couple of days. If the blight has lifted we should see sone signs by then. It also gives us a chance to THOROUGHLY search this hut and look at all the books in detail"

Assuming people agree, we can take 20 on perception checks to search the hut.

Leskni would also do some experimenting. Plant shoots or seeds or something that she'd expect to grow noticeably in 2 days. Plant them in a spiral using the hut as a focus, extending several hundred feet from the hut. Hopefully all will sprout, if not may yield some interesting information

Mack prepares for the nightly watch. Your DM assumes that watches will be held outside the "house" rather than inside.

Owen scratches his head (with the rod) after failing to identify it or the robes. It occurs to him that an Identify spell would probably have helped. Ah well, there is always tomorrow.

Armand is quite confident the party can pack the alchemy lab in one of the bags of holding. There's certainly enough paper around to safely wrap it all.

Leskni is certainly pleased with news that the grass is starting to regrow. She suggests the party stick around for a few days just in case. Make sure the blight is lifted as well as thoroughly search this place. Before settling in for the evening, Leskni plants a few seeds around the house out of curiousity.

Mack is curious as to whether the group will hear back from Liana. She did say she would send word back to the Tree.

Carver is happy to camp here for a little while, and is content to leave the bookish folk to their things.

Osul then sets to taking a small 'token' from the departed minotaur thing. He says a word of remembrance before hacking into what remains of the taurs hoof. Fortunately he only requires one small piece for himself in order to cast his spell. The others don't need any minotaur leftovers.

Nothing else of real interest is found inside the house. The library might be worth something to a collector or sage, but your typical librarian might not have as much interest.

The party set their watches. Two on watch outside whilst everyone else sleeps inside.

Some time after midnight, during Leskni and Mack's watch, they hear something approaching. With her low-light vision, Leskni can see that it is a small pack of wolves. They're sniffing the ground and circling the decayed area that still emanates from the house.

Should I light a torch just to keep them back until they move on?" I'm doing my best to whisper, although I'm guessing the wolves know we're here.

I try to slip a word or two of 'wemic' in from time to time, in my very slow attempt to learn Leskni's language.

Carver plays some music to help with the atmosphere inside the house. Faelyn sits in the corner, hugging the waterskin and rations tightly to his chest.

Atlas finds an "interesting" book about some of the Wold's watery domains. It goes into all sorts of detail on the flora and fauna of the area, and uses many long and scientific sounding words.

Osul sleeps quite soundly following the days events.

Mack can barely hear the wolves approach, but now that Leskni has pointed them out he can see them too. 4 or 5 lean looking wolves, creeping carefully around the grassy border of the decayed area. There is another wolf, clearly larger than the others, that goes so far as to touch a paw to the decayed area.

Leskni finally gets a chance for some diplomacy! She casts a spell to enable her to speak the same language. Mack can hear Lesnki's words take on a guttural tone. The wolves are startled however and jump back a step or two. Their backs arch downwards, teeth are bared as they uneasily paw back and forth. The larger wolf doesn't share the same patterns as the others. It maintains it's ground and stands tall.

"Pack are concerned. Forest is wrong. Getting better now. Because of you?" The wolf's voice is deep, as if James Earl Jones has had an illegitimate wolf child.

Owen is overjoyed that his Ring is finally working! Whilst the others sleep he finally gets a chance to exaimine the remaining items in further detail. He believes them to be a Rod of Lesser Metamagic - Silent, a Robe of Bones, and a Druid's Vestment.

Armand sleeps peacefully, dreaming of a meeting with Gargul. It will no doubt happen some day - hopefully later rather than sooner.

Leskni continues diplomacy with the alpha wolf. She advises that the group will leave once things are fine, whilst also complimenting the wolf on his appearance. The alpha grins "We stay to our own. You stay to your own" the wolf turns to lead his pack away before looking back "May you hunt true". With a few yelps, the pack disappear into the night, and away from the house.

The others sleep peacefully throughout the rest of the uneventful night.

The next morning, Leskni can see that the area of decay is indeed receding. The house looks to be at the epicentre of it. The seeds that Leskni planted furthest from the house have already started to sprout. The ones closest don't look to have done any growing whatsoever.

Those with Bubonic Plague need to make a new: Fort DC17 or take 2pts Con Damage + 1pt Cha Damage

You may cast buffs or receive aid from others before making your checks (eg: A "Heal" check that beats a disease's DC means you can give a +4 bonus to someone on their save)

If the party plan to spend another night, it will need to be a consensus. Each of those diseases require 2 Consecutive saves to cure and it took close to 5 days to get from the Tree to here.

For his own ailments, over the two days he overcomes the Zombie Rot {Fort 14 and 12 respectively vs 11}

"Well, with a swift bearing our news to the Emissary, I think we could escort Faelyn home through to his western end of The Wood at Anti, and then return to The Tree via the road. Tomorrow I could ask an animal messenger to go to The Tree, and ask if they could take a copy of any messages from The Emissary, and send them on for us at Anti. If we are needed out on the Taur Islands we will be that much closer. Two benefits! What do you think?"

"I for one think we should head back. For a couple of reasons. First we don't have an infinite supply of food, water yes, because I can create that. But not food. My supplies are dwindling and we really can't forage in the Culver wood for fear of offending someone or somebody. Secondly several of us are diseased and/or cursed. We don't currently have the ability to change that. And while traveling may be tiring to those of us afflicted, I think we must. Because if we stay here and keep trying to heal ourselves we may succeed or not. But if we don't we will continue to worsen to the point that . . . well we die."

Faelyn is looking much better, having had a good nights sleep and something to eat and drink.

The group agree to leave this place and escort Faelyn home. It means a short journey to the west, and then perhaps a safeer journey around the souther outskirts of the Culverwood.

The party have everything packed away and are ready to leave. The only outstanding question is what to do with this house and the books left behind. In the wrong hands, they could prove quite dangerous.

After that, it should be safe to get moving.

They would make excellent padding for various critters beds and such, you know, bird nests, and the lot. There's always the chance that's there's something dangerous we missed in our survey of them. And that way the Culver Wood could make the final decision."

Armand takes out his goblin chalk and marks each of the walls with the eye of Gargul. "Perhaps this will keep some of the more dangerous types away from the home. Oh and lets bury that pot the Drow was cooking, or at least take it away with us until we can find a way to destroy the contents."

Armand stands back and scratches his chin. "Not sure how it looks since I don't have darkvision. If we want to destroy the hut I imagine removing several of the stones will cause it to collapse. The party unanimously agree to leave the hut (and its contents) alone. The magic of the Culverwood will ikely envelope it if need be. Owen has heard that the effect of closing an extradimensional space is unpredictable. Some - like a bag of holding - are quite harmless. Permanently collapsing one however could be somewhat "explode-y".

Mack looks about outside. He finds wolf prints circling the outskirts of the decayed area. The decay itself has significantly reduced in size. It is still pronounced, measuring from 100ft in diameter, but is significantly better than the previous day.

Leskni's seedling are doing well. The ones furthest from the house continue to do better than the ones closer to it.

Osul looks about the skies. There is a light breeze that whips up dust and leaves, but the sky itself is clear. By all accounts it will be a lovely Spring day.

Faelyn covers his eyes as he emerges from the dark house. It has been some time since he has seen sunlight, and it may take him a few minutes to attune to it.

Carver jokes about wearing shoes, but is happy when the party are finally able to make a move.

---------------------------------

It takes a few days to travel west through the Culverwood. Trees and plants still move on their own in the living forest, though no fey are to be seen this time.

Faelyn is recovering his strength well. The fresh air, food and water are all going a long way to repair the damage done.

He has grown quite appreciative of Owen, and tells him the story of how he met his wife. Apparently Faelyn came from a farming family, whereas his wife came from a merchant family. The pair would often see each other at markets. One day he could take it no more and presented her with a bunch of carrots and a quick kiss on the cheek. The pair had been happily in love since.

And so, as the party emerge from the Culverwood's western edge that can see the open grassy plains of Aisildur before them. It only takes a few hours to reach Faelyn's farm. The experience has left Faelyn still weak, but he calls loudly as he hobbles towards the farmhouse "Eleanor! Eleanor!"

A blonde haired elven woman quickly emerges, wearing an apron as if she has just been baking. "Fae? FAE!" Crying, she runs towards Faelyn and throws her arms around him. She sobs loudly while holding him tightly "I thought I'd lost you". She seems oblivious to the fact that the rest of you are there. Faelyn holds her in his arms, closing his eyes as he too starts to cry.

On the journey westward Owen is deeply moved by Faelyn's story. "I met my wife, Isabel, under similar circumstances. During my apprenticeship as a wizard I spent much time in the library where she worked. Her fair hair distracted me from my studies enough that I caught myself memorizing love poems instead of reading up on Conjuration--which explains, I suspect, why I'm not any good at conjuring things. I found an excuse to help her shelve books one day, and our love blossomed in the stacks."

He openly weeps at Faelyn's homecoming. It has been six years since Owen has returned home to his wife and son, and Eleanor's blonde hair is all but identical to Isabel's. All that is missing is a young, dark-haired son....

When after a long while Faelyn introduces the group, Owen clasps Eleanor's hand in both of his own: "You so recall one I love that I find deep joy in meeting you. Faelyn is a lucky man to share a life with you, and worthy of it."

Owen knows that Eleanor must feel some conflict: There are guests at her home, but her lost husband has just returned. He speaks quietly to her, saying, "Take a walk with Faelyn; I'll make some tea in the meantime."

He takes out an iron tea kettle engraved with dancing centaurs and sets it to boil. Then, with great reverence, he removes from his backpack The Best Apple Pie Ever Tasted. He slices it into small portions for everyone involved.

Armand tends to those who still need healing - including Faelyn. Before long, the party are at full strength once more.

Atlas watches the reunion and can't help but feel emotional. It's one thing to save a town or stop a wrong-doer, but you can't beat witnessing the fruits of a good deed.

Osul grins. Being able to help a couple like this was truly worth the effort.

Leskni too feels very proud of the groups achievement, and is filled with joy at the reunion. She doesn't let it show, however.

Owen on the other hand openly weeps at the reunion. Most of his tears are for the couple in front of him, but some are for his beloved back home.

Carver politely lets the others do the talking, before setting up a perimeter.

Owen encourages Eleanor and Faelyn to take some time to themselves, while her prepares tea and apple pie. The pair retreat to a small spot by the fields where they can talk about what has transpired.

They return after a good thirty minutes, arms wrapped around each other.

When the time is right, Mack asks how long it is since Faelyn went missing "Goodness, it's been at least six weeks" Eleanor responds, dabbing at her eyes "He was in the field and then, then he wasn't" She starts to sob again but Faelyn holds her tightly.

The party enjoy a simple supper. The food isn't fancy, but it is cooked by good, honest people. A meat stew with mixed vegetables, some bread and fresh water. For dessert Owen offers up the world's best apple pie. The pastry is soft yet flakey, and practically dissolves on the tongue. It is dusted with just the right amount of sugar. The filling contains finely diced portions of apple, stewed and cooked to perfection. Each mouthful sends flavour sensations throughout your tastebuds, and warm feelings to your extremities. This is the pie that bards would write ballads about!

The house only has the one bedroom - Faelyn and Eleanor being childless - and they appear embarrassed that all they can offer their saviours is room in the barn.

Faelyn and Eleanor retire early, both exhausted from the day and the weeks leading up to it.

And after an uneventful night, the party wake to the promise of a brand new day

Armand makes his way around the barn and farm. He will cast Mending and Make Whole (2x if needed) on all farming equipment and gear that he can find that needs some fixing up. He will further hide 3 gold pieces and 10 silver pieces among the tools. Small compensation for the trials Faelyn had to endure, and the hardships of Eleanor while she waited.

Armand will also look over the crops, though having been raised in the city, he's not sure what he's looking at and in what condition the crops are in.
