The Parting of Cameron

South of the Road
Monday November 16th, 2015 10:44:18 PM

Cameron channels healing into everyone one last time and departs. Cameron's light and the orcs grow smaller and smaller into the distance.
The group talks it over and decides to head away from the area of the fight by maybe a mile or two. Korbiss and Durbin come in handy navigating the dark and knowing a bit about the terrain. A defensible two sided area is found with a wide angled view and the group makes camp.

The party is now going on 13 hours without sleep and sunrise is another 5 hours away and you have also marched for 10 hours.

Those who stand watch Fortitude save of DC 14 and 15. 1d4 HP non lethal damage for each failure

The night passes and no attacks or screams from the distance ever come

This has rekindled a discussion and I am putting out the basics here. The decision to not execute captives will not come back to haunt the party. There will be other bad guys other issues other problems for you guys. Don't worry about captives coming back to stick you

Carver takes the watches, then once someone wakes up, he turns in and gets a few hours, they can wait.....

Owen says "Well, I need beauty rest even more than those orcs do." He chuckles sleepily as he falls asleep for eight straight hours.

Then he wakes up and takes the last watch.

Yah, I don't think we're in any hurry to get anywhere at the moment. We can rest as long as we need to to get caught up. (While I don't consider going 13 hours without sleep a stretch by any means.... I'm glad I'm not the one that has to keep track of those details.)

I'll take whatever watch is necessary as we get caught up.... probably with either Korbiss or Durbin, to catch up a little... and practice my dwarf-speak.

"Anyone have a healing spell they can use on this wound before sleeping? I have a potion, but I'm trying to save that for the battle. If not, no worries, I think I'll just bandage this up "

Atlas takes first watch and reflects further on the past few weeks. What a mess. How do we recover? What do we do next? The Tree needs us, that is where our focus should be. This is no different than when the others left, it is just under different circumstances. Atlas shakes his head. Dwelling on the past is going to get him nowhere, so he makes the decision to move on. With that, he sleeps the rest of the 'night' while the next group goes on watch.

When he wakes he eats and gets ready to move on that camp.

Divine casters (druids, rangers, paladins and clerics) do not need 8 hours of rest to prepare spells. They pick a time of day and pray to regain their spells. I see no reason 'Osul would be 'down' spells, unless he tries to regain them within 8 hours of casting them because of the recent casting limit rule. Is that what you were refering to Graham?

The night passes without incident and at some point a bit later in the morning than is usual, the group is ready to move. Korbiss and Durbin both seem as well any any in the party after Cameron's last healing. Durbin walks up to Atlas and turns slightly to address the group as well. "Korbiss and I are good for whatever road you want. The orcs a few miles back, though I don't think there will be much there, or for heading to The Tree."

Cameron healed the party for 11 before leaving

Atlas nods at Korbis and listens to 'Osul. "I don't know to be honest. I would like to make sure these orcs don't bother anyone else again. It is great that we saved our friends here, but what about the next caravan? Then again, it isn't like we're going to be able to kill the entire clan. Not to mention, it feels like we need to regroup. I guess if I had to pick I would say that we go home, lick our wounds, and see what we can do next to help the people of the tree. Our mission here was to rescue these two and that is done. Sure, if we were hero's then maybe we would storm their stronghold and kill them all, but let's be honest with ourselves. We're in disarray and we're not likely to be defeating 50 orcs in this condition."

--------------------------------------------
ooc: Thanks on the healing, I didn't catch that one.

I forgot to mention it last time, but Atlas' concern with the orcs was only partially that they would come back to try and kill us, yet that is what everyone seems to have grabbed onto. The group can handle a few orcs, it wasn't his primary issue. It's the idea that they have evil creatures in front of them that are going to kill people in general if they are let go. Those orcs will kill others before they die, no question. The blood of those people is on the group if they let them go. I know we won't see that as players and that Atlas may never see that, but that's how it would work whether or not we role play it, so the character should act that way as well (sorry for the run-on sentence!). I'm still struggling with this for a character like Atlas, or any real "good" adventurer really. Maybe if I had an OCD magic user that was afraid of blood then it would be easier to role play these scenarios, but for your typical adventurer?

Anyway, not to start up a debate, I just want you to know that this is an ongoing issue for me that I have to address. In the mean time, i don't plan on Atlas taking any prisoners. If you cannot solve the problem, then avoid it (what a terrible strategy, but it will do for now, LOL).

Owen wakes up refreshed and prepares new spells. He speaks in response to Durbin's speech: "Now that it's daylight and we don't have to chase anyone, let's investigate this orc camp. We still need to find out if this troop of orcs has anything to do with those three-dotted fellows you encountered earlier."

Then he tries to recall if he saw any distinguishing features on the orcs during the heat of battle.

The orcs just defeated do not have any marking you are familiar with. Each has a brand on their upper right and left arm of a double bar and X respectively. Most have tattoos of various designs that do not appear to have any unifying or rank like meaning given their variety of style and location. The party also finds 2 potions on each of the 5 bodies. Korbiss identifies the markings as Healing in Orcish. [10 CLW potions]

Most of the party is in favor of heading back to the Tree to regroup. Durbin and Korbiss clarify that the camp they are talking about was only for the dozen orcs not the home base or tribe. Likely there is little left and completely deserted.

AS the group packs and talks, Durbin and Korbiss get everyone's attention. "We been talking," Korbiss begins.
"No you've been being pig headed and I've been logical" Durbin grumbles
"You were being sentimental beardless gnome crying for his mommy when you now what's best is best and being talked about by the adults. Korbiss snaps back
Durbin puffs his chest out, "Why you witless frail old kobold. We could go after it anytime we choose."
Korbiss simply folds his arms and gives the other man a stare and soon enough Durbin's shoulders drop and he nods, No, you're right. Couldn't even stave off that attack." Guilt filling his voice
Durbin puts a hand on his friends shoulder, "Not anymore." He then resumes his conversation to the party.

"The map and the cache are real. It's north of the road though, not south. Very north, close to Culverwood. Anyway, we want you good folk to have it. Go find it and use it to help keep yourselves safe and thus the good people like us who travel the roads." he hands an ivory tube to Atlas
"Really boy, we want you to have."

"Each of us should take one potion and those who can't heal should divide up the other five amongst them.
And seeing these markings, we know that these aren't part of those we've been looking into. So, lets go get this stash then get back to what we were already doing. We rushed out to rescue those who were taken, which we have done, now it's time to go back to protecting our new home."

Talk of the cache doesn't really catch his interest until he hears the three words no one else wants to hear:
"...close to Culverwood."

Despite wanting to go back to The Tree, a valid reason to be nearer The Wood is welcomed.

"A cache sounds fun to me! :) Durbin? Kobiss? Are you joining us? I get the feeling (since you handed the map over) that you're heading somewhere else."

"That makes sense to me too, Carver, as far as the potions go." I take 1.

Atlas certainly perks up at the suggestion of the cache, but his conscious is nagging him. "Durbin, Korbiss, we really appreciate your offer and I'm willing to take you up on it. Heck, that's part of the reason I'm in this business. However, it doesn't feel right just walking away with it. You put it there for a reason and you still have that reason for keeping it there. However, I don't want to be rude, so let's compromise. Why don't you join us on the trek and we'll split it up when we get there. What do you say?"

Turning to Carver, "Good idea with the potions Carver. And I agree, these are not the orcs we are looking for. Lets save our blood for that group. I have a feeling that they'll be a force to reckon with when we find them."

Catching 'Osul out of the corner of his eye, "'Osul, remind me, didn't you spend quite a bit of time in Culverwood? Any concerns?"
