A granite door
Thursday April 30th, 2015 11:17:21 AM

Zee sits and falls into a contemplative self induced trance. What was being overlooked? What could the runes carved into the door mean? Are the runes just decorative? Was this a great puzzle to unravel or is it just a door? Sometimes things are just as they appear to be

Cameron works through his own logical take on the Runes. 8 symbols and 2 deities and so 4 symbols for each including their name. Following his thought he tries to guess at what symbols would be strictly with Alemi. The door remains closed.

Atop the hill, Crosseye and Mack move carefully about investigating the burn marks. Crosseye does not believe they were caused by a fire. The dance and zigzag about and fires do not burn like that. No this is more like....and then is dawns on him, a lightning strike. The top of the hill seems to be the epicenter and spreading out from it in 260' in all direction the pair of heroes can see the dancing spiderweb pattern of burn marks. Anything within 40' of the bottom of the hill has been struck and from Crosseye's keen observation he thinks what he is looking at is the result of repeated strikes to the hilltop. Maybe even every night.

Zee sees herself just opening the door, did we even check to see if it was locked against us? "Oh for the love of..." Zee jumps to her feet, the fugue state dissipating with her cantrips. If anyone takes note, not that Zee does, the tiny illusory dragons lock in mortal combat and sink, unnoticed into the kukri.

"Walter, Atlas, I need some help," Zee starts into the tunnel and examines the door again, [b]"Now, does it push or pull?"[b] After Zee takes in the portal she proceeds to open the door...

Atlas decides to come over to the door with Cameron and take a look to see if his average mind can help solve the puzzle. "Consider me your sounding board Cameron. No sense in you being stuck alone on this one."

Atlas looks at the door and ruins. He's quiet, studying the door, but nothing is coming to mind. He listens to Cameron go over his ideas and it seems like he's on to something.

( I point to the hill top where it is most effected) It looks like to has gone on for many days. What this means I don't know, but we may want to find an area close by and set up camp and watch and see what happens ( if the marks are new then I let them know that also.)

Cameron is puzzled. He nods as Atlas comes over and tries to help, and steps back when they all pile in to try and open the door by force. He is sure that he is missing something and sits down, traveling deeper into himself to try and figure out what it is. If nothing the others have tried works, then Cameron returns to the door and uses the other 4 symbols. Again he concentrates while touching the door. hen he speaks the runes while touching the door, then he touches the runes. He uses these runes this time. Gargul, Creation, Fire, and The Heavens.

He lets Atlas, Zee and Walter by, thinking that Cameron is on to something. "That's it!" he states encouragingly.

Beyond the Door
Saturday May 2nd, 2015 12:19:38 PM

Mack and Crosseye come back down and around from the top of the hill where the tunnel was dug out to the door and report what they discovered.
Zee suggests trying the door and Walter is all too happy to put himself to use doing so.
The thought that the door might only be opened at midnight when the beacon is active is brought up. How would one open the door in safety though, if the beacon is the cause of the lightning strikes Crosseye has discovered?
Atlas does observe the scorch markings in front of the door.

The door has no way to be grasped to as to allow anyone to pull it open. Leaving the option of pushing Walter, Mack and Zee put shoulders and weight against it. The granite slab does indeed move, if only slightly. the others it would likely open, especially if one of the others was a centaur.

The combined weight and power of the group is enough to push the slab inward and after about 17" it pivots much more easily and clears the area to reveal a corridor beyond.

The buzz or humming sound that was emanating through the sound is much more noticeable now. The area beyond is not lit and is constructed of another single piece of granite that constitutes the floor, ceiling and both walls. It is set at a 20 degree downward slope into the dark beyond what light is spilling in from the doorway.

" Oh well, we're in. Let's see if we can shut this thing down. If the opportunity arises though, we still want to make sure none of the assembled tribes decide to come at the Tree. We should be able to convince them. Should we close the door behind us?"

Cameron puts his gear back on and casts light on the front of his shield so that they can see. He also puts on the tabbard that Zee had made for them. He still thinks that the runes will be important somehow, so he commits them to memory.

Atlas steps back and takes a look up at the sky to determine the time, then he heads in.

"My thoughts exactly Carver!" Atlas checks behind the door to see if they'll be able to open it again.

If there is a handle then he's all for closing the door to help protect their rear. "Let's make sure we can open it again after we close it though. The last thing we need is to be cutting it close and running back to this door just to realize that the handle is going to break off as we try to pull on it. One handle to pull something that was so hard for all of us to push has me concerned."

If it is getting too late Atlas suggests that we wait until after the "storm" at midnight to enter the tunnel. If it's still morning then he's all for going in now. However, the thought of 24 hours to deal with what ever is in the tunnel is very appealing to him.

Beyond the Door
Monday May 4th, 2015 11:03:34 PM

Zee Casts Dancing Lights and illuminates the corridor in the magical lanterns soft glow.
Mack checks fro traps, but finds none
Once the door reaches an inside wall it seems to stick to it, though it never fully comes to make physical contact. Unless acted upon by some outside force, the door will not close on its own. The door moved in a fluid motion to rest just inches from the inside wall and thus it is impossible to tell if any handle exists on this side to pull it open with.
Most of the party want the door to remain open, for concerns of needing to exit quickly. Cameron wants to close it to prevent others from coming up the party's rear.
Both points have merit The group certainly feels that they could pull the door free of the force that binds it to the wall. Once in motion, the door may be impossible to stop though.

The time of day currently is early afternoon, 20 minutes since Cameron first cast Comprehend Languages. The Dancing Lights of Zee reveal a second door 120' away.

The door and perfectly smooth construction of the granite hall is beyond anything Crosseye has ever heard. The perfection of the work in which he stands is beyond belief. He also believes the door to be counter balanced as such a massive slab of stone would weight well beyond 20 tons and once in motion that party would have but one option. Get out of the way

" That is some door. I know dwarves that could make something that perfect. It wouldn't be cheap and it would take a long time. I really should carry caltrops. Another thing to add to the list."
Unless Mack wants to check for traps, Cameron starts walking up the long hallway towards the other door, using the light cast on the small shield to light his way. He can see that opening the outside one from in here might be impossible now, so they will just have to risk unwanted company.
If Mack does want to search for traps, Cameron will of course wait for him to do that. Better safe than sorry.

Atlas moves up in front of Carver, "You OK if I take point behind Cameron? Trying to move around you quickly in case of an emergency might cost valuable time. No offense of course, but you do have more body to you than I do" Atlas leans his shoulder into Carver as he passes by him to exaggerate his point, but laughs out loud when he bounces off and almost falls over himself.

"Let's make sure we're prepared for trouble in both directions. Cameron, you're our scout while Mack looks for traps by your side. I'll follow next, then Carver in case we run into trouble. Walter, hold the back for us if we have trouble. Carver and I will be back as quickly as possible if something comes from that end. I am guessing it has been here for a very long time/ The tribes we have spoken to were not overly surprised by it, almost like in their history it has lit up before. I am guessing we are totally insulated here inside this corridor. I don't think the lightning will touch us."
Cameron keeps his whip out and his shield raised, ready for anything. But since this place doesn't seem evil he would rather talk to whomever they meet rather than just kill them.

The Second Door
Tuesday May 5th, 2015 8:39:39 PM

The corridor is perfectly smooth, perfectly shaped and perfectly clean. Walter pops back outside and grabs a good sized rock and does his best to wedge it up against the door. In all likely hood the rock will simply be swept aside if the door closes. There is no perceivable gap between the bottom of the door and the floor or ceiling, it is perfectly flush.
Atlas sets an order for the group to move down and so you do.
Mack moves down looking for traps and arrives with Cameron at the second door. He found no traps to this point. The door has a human sized hand impression on the party facing left side. The impression does not look like a hand, it is merely the size and rough shape of one, no distinct thumb or fingers.
Cameron asks Carve if he senses any evil about the place, the paladin can detect none.

Before doing so, I make sure the group is clear of anything I might accidentally set of.

It Was a Trap
Thursday May 7th, 2015 8:09:45 PM

The group gathers about, or at least they don't back off as Mack sets to work. A small joke from Atlas seems to help set the halfling at ease and he puts his practiced hands, eyes and ears to work. It takes but a few moments and Mack has the trap disarmed and the door pivots open as the first one did. What lies beyond is odd to say the least

The door opens into a chamber that is a 60' cube. A dozen highly polished metal panels are set into all four walls floor and ceiling. In the center of this chamber is a humanoid statue standing 7' high. The head is a full face metal helm hiding all features. The statue was crafted wearing what you would classify as partial plate mail. The construction is part metal, part stone and part clay or wax. A crossbow is on the right hip and a longsword on the left. A field of soft blue energy shimmers around it.

Atlas waits for Mack and Cameron to enter the room first, "Keep those eyes peeled Mack, who knows how many traps have been laid for people like us."

Once Atlas enters the room and sees the mirrors and impressive statue he lets out a long whistle. "Something tells me that someone is trying to make this guy real, or maybe he was real and they're trying to bring him back. No matter what it is, all these shiny panels would cause quite the light show if the lightning found them." And at that, Atlas looks up.

He has heard stories of golems that are animated and healed by lightning. The cleric of Gargul that presided at the clan home had said they were an abomination that had no real life, but were animated by magic that was blasphemous to Gargul. The priest had been sparse on details though as to whether or not the golemn could speak or reason.

The 'mirrors' turn out to be highly polished pieces of metal. Perfectly polished pieces of metal, rectangular in shape and measuring 48" wide and 96" high. There are precisely 12 such panels in each of the four wall as well as 12 in the floor and another 12 in the ceiling

Cameron, Mack and Walter all note that the placement of the panels mirrors the far side so that no matter where in the room you stand, everything looks identical.

The armored figure does not resemble anyone or anything the group recognizes.

Mack spies no traps but does find one of the panels, in the center of the north wall, seems to be just a bit askew.

Cameron rubs his butt where the plot train hit him as it railroaded him and Crosseye into the room. Once he determines that there is no permanent damage he tries to imagine what the room looks like since there is no way that it is 60' on a side without there being gaps between the 4' by 8' mirrors, unless the room is only 12' high and not truly a cube.even if it were only 12' high, the floor and ceiling wouldn't be completely covered. He tries to figure out how the room would focus lightning that came from above, or any angle, for that matter. He is pretty sure they are on the clock now, since when the light show happens, around midnight, they are going to have a pretty good seat for it.
" Soooo.... anyone have any ideas? I mean we can stop the light, or lightning , or whatever the thing we see at night is from getting to the statue, and us by using the tents to cover it and us in the middle. But if the light reflects all around and hits them, well it will probably light them, and us on fire."
"Alternatively we could try to pry that loose panel off and see what's behind it, or fix it and see what happens when the light hits the statue the way it is probably supposed to do. Based on the runes outside there is about a 50/50 chance of this place being creative, or destructive. What do you guys think?"

The room is devoid of dust, debris or any scuffs or scrapes that would leave tracks for Crosseye.

The floor, seamlessly blends into the walls which do so to the ceiling. Were the armored figure not standing in the room, facing the direction the party entered from, it could be quite conceivable that one could lose direction in a matter of moments.

Osul's closer examination of the statue reveals a few more details. The figure is wearing the armor, it is not part of it, like a carved statue would be. There is some cloth beneath, as there would be for a real person wearing such gear. However, Osul notes where there should be skin, instead is clay. The long sword and crossbow appear to be real weapons and there are 20 bolts in a quarrel. Cameron looks around, first at the script, which he cannot read, then at the walls, then at the figure, which they now know to be an actual clay figure, with metal weapons and armor over the clay.
" I see three possibilities here. Only one of them is good. So far as we know we have wasted time on the runes below expecting them to make sense. Now we are trapped in a room with a creepy statue and alot of metal plates, and evidence that the lights we have seen for about a week, were actually lightning. Either this script is false too, and is meant to frighten off those smart enough to read it, in which case nothig happens when Mack goes down that ramp. That's the good outcome. The two bad outcomes I see are that Mack dies horribly somehow when he crosses that threshold, which while interesting, I like Mack too much to want to watch that, or that statue animates when Mack steps across the line and we have to fight it. If it is the latter, I think we should all at LEAST be ready for that to happen, right?"
"Zee, do you see any magic in the hallway? your spell should still be running I think, I will scan it for poison. Beyond that all we can do is hope for the best."

Cameron says a few words and his eyes turn a bilous green. He scans the hallway as far as his light reaches and looks for signs of poison. Mack looks for traps and finds none
Cameron Detects no Poison.
Zee does detect magic about the corridor, but with no formal training in the arcane she only knows that it is there.
Cameron also suggests caution, he and really the whole group are dead set convinced the statue in teh center of the room is going to come to life at any moment
The group takes some precautions as Mack starts down the ramp

As Mack crosses the threshold, brilliant white arcs of electricity erupt about the group

The blue filed still glows about the statue and it has not moved. The electrical stroke extended 20' from the door and never came into contact with it. As Atlas is heading towards the ajar panel when the lightening erupts in the chamber. As Atlas is struck his teeth clench and his body is racked with pain, but he focuses all his energy on trying to see what the lightening pattern is in the chamber. Does it bounce off the panels, where does it come from, where does it go, are there any areas that look to be lightening free, or did the lightening only strike directly at each of us?

Once he is able to take a breath, he says "Yep, I'm with you Crosseye, we shouldn't try that again. However, I'm not keen to try other plates right now either. Another strike like that and you'll be dragging me out of here...assuming anyone is still walking after a second.

Channel energy for 12 healing to everyone (including the statue, I want to see what happens)(nice rolls for once, right?)
With the wind back in his sails, Cameron murmurs a few more words and returns to the hallway to examine it for magic again. Maybe the discharge was the only one and the trap either doesn't reset or takes time to do so.
(Cast detect magic and re-examine the hallway leading further down) Is it still magical? If it is where is the magic? The whole hallway? The floors? The walls? The ceiling?
"To answer your questions Atlas, what I saw was like a globe of lightning that bloomed near the doorway. It was about 20' in radius, and it never touched the statue nor any of the panels. The blast tears into the party without mercy and it takes many several moments to recover. Recover they do, and gathering back from the passage Cameron channels the healing power of his god through them to mend the pain from the blast. Cameron purposefully includes the statue, but there is no response from it.
[Cameron healed everyone for 12HP]

Everyone in the party seems quite keen on looking for another avenue, any other avenue aside from the corridor.

Searching and inspecting the other 59 possible panels will take some time, but the party starts doing so. Crosseye gets as close as he can to the statue. The blue field surrounding it makes his minimal distance about the span of a human head. Carefully he inspects the hips, shoulders and such, but the armor makes it very hard to tell. The statue or humanoid form is wearing armor and other combat gear. The equipment is definitely not part of the form beneath.
The room itself is devoid of any debris

After 1 hour, the individuals of the party are unable to find any panel that moves in the slightest. However, it took most of the group to move the panel revealing the first corridor. In a group effort it would take 2 to 3 minutes per panel or around 3 hours to fully put each one to the test.

Zee verifies the magic returns to the tunnel in less than a minute.
The descending ramp makes the length of the passage unknowable by visual examination

At the end of the first hour she approaches Atlas, "I want to get out, I want to start setting camp." At the first sound of protest, there would be, there always is, her lip quivers and her eyes fill with unshed tears, "I stink at puzzles, I am barely a sorceress, I don't know a bloody thing about magic, and I am scared that this room will fire lightening at midnight. Cameron regards Zee from the corner of his eye. Clearly she has become emotional and that fact was clouding her vision. They were trapped in here. 100% screwed unless they figured this out. There was no more outside, no evening camp, there was figure this out or be entombed here. More emotion wasn't going to make this better, so Cameron does not point this out to Zee. She often resents him when he is right, especially when he is calm, and right. Then Walter points out something so obvious that Cameron is stunned for a moment. How had he missed that little tidbit?
" There you might be onto something Walter my boy. I'm glad that 'Osul took that close a look at the statue thingee, I sure didn't see the belt and necklace before. Now, about that glowing blue field around him... has anyone TRIED to touch the statue yet? Hmmm, I wonder...."
Cameron steps back a step and re-examines the statue. Does it have FEET, or does the base of the statue look more like a pedestal or one big single foot? While he ponders the answers to this question he tries to establish the answer to the question he just posed out loud.
" Here goes nothing." The cleric takes a deep breath and centers his mind. a simple prayer goes through his mind and he repeats it a few times, feeling all fear, and all emotion slip from his body. The he acts...
Cameron either has no fear, or is as dumb as a bag of hammers, the jury is still out on that. He steps forward and reaches with both hand for the necklace around the statue's throat. His confidence in 'Osul or Carver or one of the others saving him if this goes badly does not even occur to him. They will or they won't. But there is an answer here, and it needs to be found. Carver already offered his own hide to clear the way for them, but maybe Walter's idea will make that unnecessary.

Thursday May 14th, 2015 7:52:19 PM

The pressure mounts and Zee begins to really feel it
Cameron confirms the magic returns has returned to the hall. It seems to exist through the entire passage, walls, ceilings, floors.
Carver comes up with a plan of sorts. He will set off the trap and while it is down, the party makes a break for it.
Walter mentions the necklace on the statue and Cameron nearly face palms himself.
Cameron too, then has a thought and closes on the statue to take the necklace. Looking the the things feet he confirms the humanoid indeed has two legs that extend to the ground and are wearing boots. His plan to take the necklace, however, encounters one minor set back. He is 3' tall. The statue is just over 7' perhaps. The gnome would need to physically scale the armor to get to the necklace to remove it.
Atlas walks over to comfort Zee and talk her down so to speak.
Mack suggest taking the sword and crossbow from it as well.

The party has a few options before them.
No one has touched the statue
No other panels seem to be movable
The panel that has opened reveals a 10' downward sloping ramp fully radiating magic the group knows to be an electrical trap of some kind.

To speed things along, the blue field surrounding the statue prevent all attempts of making contact with the statue. The field itself is a solid barrier as sure as any other

" Hold on Carver, we need to do something with this statue I think. It has a field around it so we can't touch it. the lightning doesn't reach it when it goes off. What if the lightning did reach it? Would it dispel the field? If the field is dispeled, then maybe the trap is disarmed. It's a long shot but I want to try it. I want to set up the statue to get shocked to see if the field goes away. I'll trigger the trap, it's my idea and if it doesn't work I don't want the rest of you to get hurt. Everyone needs to get on the other side of the room so they are away from the blast."
Cameron waits for the others to move back. He then starts creating water along the floor, linking the statue to the open panel. He leaves the point in front of the panel until last, and creates the water so that it trickles down the slope, hopefully triggering the trap remotely while he stands out of the range they say for the trap. If that doesn't work he goes over and steps through the opening to trigger the trap.
In theory, the lightning should charge the water and run to the statue. It may also cook Cameron.

The DM committed a blunder and so this post is correcting that.

The careful take 20 Perception Search of the room did find another panel.

This door opens to a 10' ramp leading down to a corridor. Written above the door in Draconic or Linguistics check DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {Only one whose veins flow with ancient blood may enter here}

Detect magic senses the same auras as in the other corridor

Recap: The party entered a 60' cube from the east. This door shut and sealed itself. 12 mirror like panels are set at random points in each wall, the floor and ceiling. In the center of the room is a 7' statue surrounded by a blue filed that prevents physical contact. In the west wall the party first found a loose panel revealing a passage with a tauric phrase above. the passage is trapped and caused considerable harm by electricity. the party has also found a panel in the north wall, with a message written in Draconic

Please note compass directions are for reference to visualize where things are. The atatue faces the original east door

Because I know no strange languages I will stick with the the plan unless the group wants to try something else or the other passage. Either way I will look at the other oassage for any signs of travel in it or tracks (Survival check 25)

The Original Plan  3d6=10 ;
Monday May 18th, 2015 4:02:29 PM

The group gathers off to either side of the western passage, remaining 30' back. Cameron starts creating magical water, first into the corridor. there is no electrical discharge as the water flows freely down the ramp with the initial casting. A couple additional spells are all that are required to create a continuous trail of water from the top of the ramp to the edge of the statue.
So with a breath and silent count Cameron will head down the ramp and as soon as the charge dissipates the party will attempt to rush down the ramp while the trap is resetting.

Cameron steps across the threshold and the electrical charge goes off. Reflex DC 14 Damage 10 or 5
The magical surge of electricity does not follow the laws of the natural world and does not dance down the line of water to the statue. Following the rest of the plan, the group quickly moves down the ramp and finds themselves in a long corridor. 90' away, there appears to be several small objects in the floor. From here it is hard to make out too much detail. What you can tell is that they are perpendicular across the hall and in the color of Yellow, Red and Green. The corridor continues well past the objects

Cameron looks back at Atlas. " Thanks, but I should be OK, as long as the lightning isn't stronger than last time."
Save was made in the post that I outlined my plans.
5 damage taken.
Cameron stops long enough to examine the statue.did the blue field disappear when he triggered the trap?
If it did he runs to the statue, climbs as far as he needs to and strips off as many items as he can reach. Boots. sword, belt, armor, necklace and crossbow. He urges anyone else not charging down the ramp to help. ( this was his plan all along, if this dispels the field)
If it did not he shrugs and heads down the ramp. Once he gets down to where the objects are he stops and examines them without touching them.
Perception 29
If he can figure them out he will do so, if not he continues on.

Carver watches as the lightning goes off, if the field protecting the statue goes off he'll join Cameron in stripping gear from it, if it stays up, he says so loudly enough for the other to hear and chides them towards the opening, long before the lightning recharges.
Upon seeing the objects he stops and lets one who knows what they are doing handle it. Without passing beyond them.

Zee was moved back before any of this went down, and didn't need a save. If she was catatonic then Cameron dragged her out of the way before triggering the trap. We aren't dumb enough to all stand in the blast zone when we know where it's going to be. Also, if you have objections state them, don't just say I object and offer no reasons. No one would be swayed by that even your BFF.

In the Passage
Tuesday May 19th, 2015 9:44:22 PM

The blue field about the statue never wavers.

The group moves down the corridor and comes to stand before the two colored objects. The objects are Hemispheres sitting upon the floor, or perhaps entire spheres sunk halfway into the floor.
Cameron's careful examination leads him to believe the Green and Red Hemispheres are actual spheres sunk halfway into the floor.
Walter looks on and comes to the same conclusion

The sphere are single pieces of perfectly shaped and polished rock measuring about 12" in diameter. Best guess is about 100 pounds each.
Mack looks for traps, but finds none
It also appears that the spheres could be lifted from the floor if one wanted to do so

Mack gives Cameron 2 Goodberries, healing him [5 HP Back Cameron]

Ooc only Cameron was hit with the second blast. Zee still has 16HP

there are only 2 sphere. I know earlier i put 3 but that was incorrect

ooc: I did a reflex save not realizing that we would not be hit by the lightning, hence the roll. I'm not 100% sure that we were not, the wording in the last DM post leaves room for interpretation, but I'll leave the HP where they are based on Cameron's comments. I'm sure the DM will clarify.

Cade, no worries. She is just a scared girl. Sometimes she's too fast to speak up, other times too scared to speak up. I'm getting a good picture of who Zee is. I look forward to her character development over the next few levels.

Cameron detects magic on the spheres. He really is going to need to look into magical theory, since even if they ARE magic he won't know what they do. To Walters new suggestion he says.
" That's as good as the best idea I have. I can see if they radiate magic, but i've no way to figure out if it will be good for us or bad. They seem to be solid stone. While I could lift one, I'd just be staggering around with it. Can you tough guys pick them up and bring them along?"

Wednesday May 20th, 2015 9:59:15 PM

Cameron casts and verifies that both of the stones radiate magic. He also detects magic upon the walls, floor and ceiling, just as before at the doorway. All of the auras are faint in power.
Crosseye inspects the area for traces of anything having moved through the any, but like the main room, clean and perfect are words that don't quite describe it well enough
Walter and Crosseye both suggest that perhaps the stones are needed later and maybe the group should pick them up
Zee attempts magic, but the stones are too heavy for the cantrip. (Each stone weighs 100 pounds)
Mack steps forward and puts his hands on the Green sphere and Crosseye grabs the Red one. Mack is barely able to move the stone. Crosseye has greater success and is able to get the stone out of the floor.

Crosseye is holding the red stone sphere, it does indeed weigh 100 pounds.
Mack was unable to get the green sphere out of the the hole.
The group can now see that the floor has been perfectly removed to accommodate the stone

Several suggestions are made about the stones purpose, their relation to the lightning, the front room and the traps encountered thus far.

Cameron channels a burst of positive energy and heals everyone in the group (3HP to all)
Crosseye mentions perhaps taking camp, here in the, but the day is still fairly young as the group has only been inside for about 2 hours.
Most seem in favor of moving on for now, and so down the corridor it is. Zee's silver and golden lights dance along, illuminating the passage

90' later, the passage opens into another room. A 40' room cube with an exit in the far wall. In the center of the room is a large stone box, bound with some silver metal. On the top of the box are two half spherical depressions.

Coming down the passage behind the group, still about 90' away, is a humanoid in partial plate armor. A longsword and crossbow are at his hip. Its gait is steady and fluid.

Cameron's jaw drops open. It actually spoke to them rather than attacking. Not what he expected. Quickly he hides his surprise and switches to information gathering mode. He steps back 5 feet, still maintaining his defensive posture ( AC 24). Then he asks what he needs to know.
" Wow, pleased to meet you. We were wondering what the lights in the night time sky were all about. They seem to be drawing in all kinds of monsters that might get the idea that attacking our home would benefit them, that's why we want to turn the beacon off. Is there a way to do that? Could you help us?"
" What is this place? When was it built and by whom? The stonework is amazing. I have seen the vaults of dwarven clan lords that were nowhere near as perfect. Please tell us all about this place."

Did Cameron pick up any artificial tone in the voice with his previous DC21 sense motive check? From the description it sounds like it is a living voice with some inflection, but very calm. Is that about right?

OOC: Can Atlas tell if the voice is a human voice or a living voice, or does it sound like a creation or something of magic that the humanoid figure has instilled in it. In other words, can we tell if this is a living being or a creation of magic or something undead?

Atlas keeps his sword pointing to the ground so as not to instigate anything with the humanoid. "Do you mean that you would like us to put the red stone back where it was? Is that your purpose here...what are you protecting?"

As Crosseye puts the stone down the bout of flame shoots up and Atlas looks over his shoulder in concern. He turns back to the humanoid, "If we pick that back up it's going to hurt. Is that something you would be willing to do in order to make the correction?"

If the creature answers, great. If the creature tries to go and pick up the red stone then Atlas steps in front of him. Not in a threatening way, but just enough to stall him.

OOC: So that I can decide if we want to attack him when is back is turned and he is hurt from the flame himself (if he's not magically protected). So far I like his attitude, but I want to better understand what Atlas or any of the group notice about this humanoid. Hopefully he talks to us and we can continue the conversation, but if not then our eyes will have to the talking for us.

The Armored guardian

Rarely has anything been inspected so thoroughly. The groups senses attempt to take is everything they can about him and the results are mixed.
Everyone is quite sure this is the statue or an identical copy of the statue that you last saw surrounded by a blue field of energy. The wax-like clay can be seen at some of the gaps through the armor and under clothing of the plates and chain protection. The voice sounds natural, at first, but too perfect in pitch and rhythm. But then again, no one in the group has much experience with life beyond the races of the Wold. What can be agreed upon, is that the 7' armor clad warrior is not of noble or ignoble blood.

Cameron -" Wow, pleased to meet you. We were wondering what the lights in the night time sky were all about. They seem to be drawing in all kinds of monsters that might get the idea that attacking our home would benefit them, that's why we want to turn the beacon off. Is there a way to do that? Could you help us?"
"We are to remain here and defend this location until relieved. "I'm afraid I can't let you do that"

Cameron -" What is this place? When was it built and by whom? The stonework is amazing. I have seen the vaults of dwarven clan lords that were nowhere near as perfect. Please tell us all about this place."
"This location has been deemed important. This location was completed in 4arc by 3 rad and took approximately 17,349. The CnC is off limits."

Atlas - "Do you mean that you would like us to put the red stone back where it was? Is that your purpose here...what are you protecting?"
"Your actions are endangering yourself and others. Please return to sentry station until relief arrives. Your safety is important The ongoing security of this location is paramount."

The creature makes no move to get the red stone which still lies in the depression atop the granite box. It does not answer Atlas last question about the red stone

Atlas has a feeling that this thing will cut them in half before they have a chance to take a breath. One thing is for sure though...he said to go back to the sentry station. "Could you lead us to the sentry station so we can be safe? If not, can you point us in the right direction?"

"Ouch! Ok I not going to try that again! Should I go get the other stone and bring it here?[b] ( reflex 21 pass took 4 damage) I listen to the conversion that is going on with the others and the guard it seems. [b]" What if we tell him we are his relief? And what of the other stone. Should I try and bring it, switch places in the box? I just don't want to take to much more! I am ok for now but how much more can I/we take. Maybe he can lead us safely back to the other room or the sentry station?"

"Where he is talking about is the place we first saw him I think. If he says it is safe we can probably head there, and rest as was suggested earlier. With Jancassis magic I can read the signs and maybe talking to this sentry will get us the information we need to do what we have to do. It'll also give us time to heal a little."
"Please, lead us back to the sentry post where we can await your relief."

Cameron gets the feeling that the being is trying to protect them and do it's job as well. It said 'Your safety is important The ongoing security of this location is paramount.' There is a significant clue there. They are important, but the locations security is MORE important. This thing is polite now, but will kill them if it has to. Best to stay on it's good side for now.
Cameron waits for the being to lead them back to the sentry point, staying far enough behind it to not be caught if it triggers the trap, and keeping enough space between himself and the next person if the being doesn't trip the trap, but Cameron does. He also casts detect magic again and examines the floor, walls and the strange being.

The Armored guardian

Atlas asks the Armored Guardian if it could take the group to the Sentry location.
Cameron believes that to be where the group first saw the statue and indeed it turns quietly to head back down the passage.
As it moves off, Crosseye asks about simply telling the Guardian the party is the relief. And what about getting the other Stone and bringing it back here

For now, the party follows. The Guardian strides smoothly, nearly soundless, down the passage. Crosseye can observe no marks upon the floor from the Guardian, nor any other in the party upon the stone floor.
Cameron casts Detect Magic and the entire corridor once again radiates to him. The Guardian does as well.

The group returns to the first chamber, 60' on every side as well as up. The Guardian takes up a position in the center of the room.
Carmeron uses the last of his healing spells on someone.

The group has relative privacy from what they can tell
