Night Decisions - Co DM Dan K
Thursday October 23rd, 2014 9:36:03 AM

Alas wakes the group up shortly after midnight as Cameron returns from his devotions and puts the suggestion of a night walk to the group. Gaston sits up and wipes the sleep away from his eyes, Atlas lays out the options he sees and asks if anyone has others. Could the group appease the forest itself, offer some type of gift?

The meager light of the moons reveals nothing to Crosseye, the forest is dark and shadowy and beyond about 20' it seems to be consumed by the dark, yet even darker shapes loom within that black. Crosseye and others trained in outdoor survival though, know those other shapes to be the great trees.

Camreon gets back to the camp and looks as if he maybe has received some insight on what the group might do

I think Jancassais is mainstream enough to at least be recognizable at a glance, especially with euphemisms of " The Lady of Vengeance" getting tosses around. Also, Atlas could have seen/heard Cameron tonight since his prayers start about the time Atlas is coming off watch.
IC
" Well, Jancassais showed me and reminded me, in her cryptic way, how things are done by apprentices. When anyone first learns something, they work with someone more experienced. Even a master like my grandfather has apprentices help him at the forge, so that he can more closely focus on the armor he is crafting. I would suggest we do the same."
" Crosseye is our best tracker, trained in the craft. The rest of us are either untrained, out of practice or just novices with the talent, but not the training. Separately we pull the group in many directions. If we all focus on HELPING Crosseye. Pointing out clues we see, noting things he misses, but allowing him to take the lead I think we can hold true to an easterly course in the daylight. If that doesn't work tomorrow, then we can try the nighttreking idea. I prayed to Jancassais for the light to show us the path without a burning torch if we choose to do that."

Cameron has had some rest. If the others choose to press on in the dark, he is ready. However if they do they will be relying on the vision of Carver and Iraldas, who see better in the blackness of the dark forest rather than the trained eye of Crosseye, a trained and experienced tracker. Either way, Cameron is ready.

"I don't consider this type of a decision my area of expertise in any way, so I'd weight my vote very low. My feeling is we try again when it's light out, with us all helping Crosseye, as Cam suggested. If that gets us no where tomorrow, we take a late afternoon nap, and try our best tomorrow night with those that can see best in the dark being our lead."

I look around to see where Flash ran off to.

What Cameron is suggesting is using the "aid another" rules to boost Crosseye's chances of finding the right direction and holding to it. To do this we each make a survival roll with a DC of 10 ( a fifty-fifty chance even if we have no training or wisdom bonus). Each one of us that makes the DC adds +2 to Crosseye's roll when he makes his check. Also this shows we are focusing on finding one path into the wood, rather than each of us acting on our own. I suspect the actual DC for finding north and moving east is being modified by the forest somehow, but with all of us helping even a bad roll with all of those bonuses should find us the path. Guidance which Caius has in his prayed for spells wouldn't hurt either.

Night Decisions and the Morning Dawn- Co DM Dan K
Friday October 24th, 2014 9:49:48 AM

Cameron lays out some sound advise, everyone focus on helping Crosseye or whomever might be delegated to lead the group, through the woods. The advise is taken and accepted and the group resumes watch and sleep as the time dictates. Gaston shakes his head slightly, "You think you insult me by sarcastically attaching mighty to my name, but i have ever been the object of jealous peasants with less than I ranger." He says in response to Crosseye. "What I think is that the reason you are here is that I wanted you here and now expect you to do your job." he continues with a plain matter of fact if not a little bored tone of voice. "Get some sleep." with that, Gaston returns to his bedroll, places his sword beside it and gets comfortable. Gaston does not remove his armor.

Mack finds Flash, if he had gone far, he's returned to nearly the identical spot wher the halfling last saw him before falling asleep.

The night passes, Carver on watch with Irdalas as the others sleep. The forest is dark, terribly dark and eerily quite. A breeze stirs through the trees and sets the hairs on the backs of your necks dancing. The breeze comes from the interior wood, not the large grassland expanse to the west as it should. The continuous breeze lasts until morning, where upon it simply stops.

Dawn breaks and light fills the wood with shafts of sun that dance and flicker as the leaves block and allow it through. Camp is packed and the group heads out.

Cameron packs his few belongings and return's Carver's rope. He is grateful for the Centaur's help until he can either grow strong enough to carry more gear or wealthy enough to afford some form of magical bag to negate some of the gear's weight.

As the group heads out he points out anything he finds useful to keeping the group headed into the woods to Crosseye. Otherwise he keeps his eye peeled and a dagger ready for anything that attacks them.

Cameron (David F) AC 18 (T 14, FF 15) CMD 12 HP11/11 Character Sheet

OOC
Most of the time, rations are no big deal, even on this short trip they shouldn't be a big deal. Sometimes however, like in the current AotF plot, the characters are out in the wilds for a long time so purify food and drink and create water become big deals and knowing how many days food you have can count alot. Generally, if the DM doesn't bring it up, I don't worry, but I carry some so I can carry my weight in the group.
Foraging, like you suggested, is a survival check and it halves your movement for the day, so for us halflings it would mean slowing the group to a crawl and not necessarily guarantee that enough food was found for the day. If foraging is necessary in a situation, the number of people fed is based on the amount the survival roll beats the DC. Every 2 over the DC feeds another person. This is another situation where aid another is a great help.

I am awaken for the last watch with the cleric. I put on my armour and head over to the cleric. I should get to know him better. What he is all about, if we are going to be taking watch together more often. So I go to him and ask about his religion and his skills with healing, hoping I can pick up things from him for future use. Maybe he can help and teach me in the ways of healing.
As morning approaches I start to wake the others then Sit down to a cold breakfast of my trail rations again. "So it looks like we will be trying another day of getting to the middle. I will try to do much better then yesterday and will all your help together I know we will make it this time."

After breakfast I head to the front of the group and ready to try to lead them in again and to the middle of this Forrest. I get my bearings for the right direction them head east again in the forest slowly moving to keep us in a straight line this. As we move I am always checking and looking for any signs that me have changed or come off direction. I use my great axe to cut though the ruff and keep in a straight line.

Big Black Beady eyes, all fixed on you... CoDM Corsario
Monday October 27th, 2014 12:40:03 AM

OOC: Hi Guys! I'm the new guy in the chair! Hope we have a great time together. And thanks to my CoDM Dan for the chance.
Crosseye uses the sun's position and the wind blowing to try and orient himself. He starts marching forward, resolute, and you all get a good feeling this time. You all notice how he is guiding you with care and good effect.
Suddenly Cameron lets his dagger fly next to Crosseye! It gets stuck in a tree, killing a snake dangerously close to the Ranger.
Gaston examines it, and asks for you to remove the skin, so he can take it home.
"I think I will keep it as a memento of our adventure."
OOC: Do any of you do what he says?
After another hour Mack discovers a path of blueberrys, ripe and tasty. Enough for everybody, makes you continue the march in great spirits. You even feel like the forest opens up and sun light in your faces. Even Gaston seems to get in a better mood after eating them!
Carver goes to Crosseye, and makes him see he is slowly, but surely, deviating towards the right of the correct path. Crosseye thanks him and corrects the way. Atlas uses that to pay extra attention to possible errors in navigation. He realizes all the terrain seems to push them right, and takes care of correcting Crosseye way every time he starts drifting right.
A couple of hours later you are about to break out in laughter, as you feel how the help you have giving Crosseye has paid off. But you are gain some new respect for him, as he has surely taking you froward in a way you haven't before. But you feel a weight off your shoulder, now that you are finally advancing.
Suddenly Irdalas eye sees something in the grass, and with a fast hand stops Crosseye.
He turns all around. The roots of the tress all around you look normal, but he signals all of you to stop anyway.
You start to feel uncomfortable, as you can feel eyes on you from everywhere, not evil, but judging. Not hungry, but wondering who are you. What are you doing here? What do you want...
At first you don't see anything, but then Irdalas points at one with his longbow.
Toads. Bloated toads, all around you, almost invisible with their natural camouflage in the roots.
Their bulging black beady eyes fixed on you.
OOC: Big for a Toad, fist sized.
Crosseye knows they are harmless, normally. But if stepped on, they explode releasing poison. He had never seem so many in one place, and is not sure how you got in the middle of them without stepping on one.
You can try to avoid them, with an Acrobatics DC 10 to get away from them...

As Cameron retrieves his dagger he looks at the snakes. He knows how to deal with poison, and is unafraid to skin the snake for Gaston. If he is able to save the poison glands for later, so much the better.
"Surely we are being led in the right direction. A venomous creature is a good omen, at least to me."

Survival 6 to skin the snake

Cameron looks about once they find themselves in the midst of the venomous toads, looking for a clear path. Since they are so hard to see. He looks at his heavily armored companions (for the most part) and wonders how they will be agile enough to navigate the toads. Turning to Crosseye he asks,
" More good omens I see. I know Rangers can sometimes influence wild animals. They don't seem angry at us. Can you get them to open a path so we don't hurt them and in turn, ourselves? It is in both groups best interests."
Cameron waits to see if Crosseye can persuade the toads to make a path, if not he will attempt to navigate his way out of the toads. He hopes that Caius is able to help treat poison if anyone steps on one. He is not skilled in healing.

Atlas is feeling good about their progress as a team. This is how a group should work together.

When Cameron slays the snake he yells over to him, "Nice throw Cameron!" However, when Gaston asks for the skin Atlas snorts and laughs out loud. He is then stunned to see Cameron actually doing it. He shakes his head disappointingly, but he is still chuckling to himself at Gaston's ridiculous notions. A fool needs an audience, so I guess Gaston has his with Cameron. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the group later on. We cannot be divided or we'll all fall.

Atlas listens in to the conversation with Cameron and Crosseye. It makes sense to try and he says so to them. However, he has a question of his own, "Crosseye, you said they are harmless unless we step on them. I know there are a lot, but do we really need your coaxing, or can we just pick them up and move them as we go? Which leads me to my next question, how did we get into the middle of them without stepping on them? Something odd is happening here. Is there a chance that these toads are the eyes of another being, someone that knows the forest and it's inhabitants? Could we try speaking to them or who ever they may be representing? I don't like the idea of talking to toads, but I like it better than being poisoned."

If there are no other options Atlas will attempt to jump through them, but he would prefer they find another option if able. He picks a direction where others are not heading and holds his breath as long as he can while navigating through them.

Cameron saves the poison glands from the Snake, and handles the skin to Gaston, with takes it with some disgust in his face.
"Thank you, Cameron. You will have to teach me how to do that someday. What do you think, would it suffice for a belt?"
-----
Mack kneels and tries to get one toad into his hand. The toad looks directly at his eyes, but otherwise don't move. Carver tries to make them go away, but they keep in their place. Not one of them jumps or walks away.
Atlas moves between the toads, holding his breath, without much effort, and you can almost hear twinkling by his steps. He gets outside of the circle of toads, and lets out air. He smiles. You can almost swear he didn't left footprints behind.
Cameron also tries to move away from the Toads, stepping with agility between them, but when almost out of the Toads he steps on one cleverly hidden one, which explodes in a foul smelling cloud of vapor, while splashing him with a pink ichor.
Reflex DC 14 to avoid getting splattered with Fort DC 12 contact poison, Effect: Nauseated for 4 hours
Seeing Cameron failing to cross, Irdalas takes some space to start a run and jumps over them. When he mentions the use of the toads to coat his arrows the closest toad turns to face him and croaks disapprovingly, while inflating itself. When he elaborates on the "no harming" part the toad ease up, and starts to disinflate.
Crosseye tries to calm the toads, or make them move away, but he is unable to. He then proceeds to move away from them, stepping with care in rocks that doesn't show toads, successfully, getting near the rest of his team outside of the toad circle.
Mack, Carver and Gaston remains in the center of the toad. Mack lies down and looks deeply into a Toad's eyes, opening his mind to let his thoughts mingle with those in the toad, and maybe into the mysterious force behind those black beady eyes. He feels like a connection starts to happen, like he is able to enter a secret world of natural wonder and power... nah, forget it, he doesn't get anything, except a toad eyeful.
Gaston looks annoyed.
"What? They don't seem like much, we can easily hack our way out!"
He gets his sword and prepares to skewer the first toad in front of him while holding his breath and keeping as much distance as possible. He might be right.

" Gaston, They are not a foe that wishes you harm, simply forest dwelling creatures that i suspect are here to guage our intentions toward the forest. Otherwise they would not have taken such offense to our sharpshooter's idea of using their venom on his arrows. A wild boar, a giant wolf or a marauding bear, those would be a trophy worthy of a hunter like you. These toads simply wish to get on with their lives, being the eyes of the forest. Put up your blade and navigate their maze. I think Violence will undo any progress we have made so far today."

Diplomacy 25 to sway Gaston's opinion that the toads are foes to be killed
( Natural 20, best I can do) Should anyone else wish to make that higher by saying something soothing or to the point that violence may set this trip back just make an aid another roll and the DM can add the bonuses later. ( See? It might pay off to have one person coddle the rich guy)

Cameron keeps his delay poison prayer handy in case others need it.

Gaston smiles at Cameron suggestion.
"You are right my friend! I will do a dagger scabbard from it. I have a very nice dagger, with a silver handle, that will look great there!"
-----
Even after stepping on the toad Cameron manages to avoid the ichor touching his skin, even as his boot get stained by the pink substance.
At Cameron suggestion, Gaston stays his hand.
"Not to use violence? Maybe you are right. Ok, I will do it as you say. I am sure I can manage as well as anyone. You have my trust, my friend."
At Atlas he answer.
"Yes, I think you have a point. I will jump my way out of here."
After you persuade Gaston not to kill the Toads, Mack steps his way out of the maze. Then Carver do the same, with elegance, even.
Gaston looks appalled at the ease on which both of them escaped the toads. For a second looks doubtful, but then he muster his courage.
"You are very capable, I see. I am glad I can keep up with you!"
He starts stepping out, trying to avoid the Toads.
Gaston Acrobatics Roll: 15
He manages to get out without stepping on any toads, too.
"Easy! I bet I could do it with my eyes closed. I could get one of them to keep, as a trophy, but I guess that would be a bad idea. Or could you get one of them for me?"
The toads, in unison, turns towards you, big black beady eyes observing you, at Gaston comment. They all start getting out of their hiding places, and position themselves to jump towards you.
Gaston gets white as a sheet.
But then Crosseye gets between Gaston and the toads, and starts making toad sounds, while slowly waking backwards, while signalling the rest of you to get away from the amphibians, slowly and calmly.
After a couple tense minutes, which you feel like hours, you get away from the toads, that start to bury themselves in the mud again.
Gaston breathes, you think for the first time since the toads got "aggressive".
"Thank you master Crosseye. Good work... Let's continue our way, shall we?"
OOC: Well done! You all win 100 XP. Also, Cameron and Crosseye win 50 extra XP with their good management of the situation. Time to keep advancing, so please roll to see if you can keep on the right track.

Thursday October 30th, 2014 2:00:48 AM

Irdalas starts walking. His elven sensibility makes him feel that whatever test the toads were about the group had passed it. But even so the forest kept dark, cold and looming. They weren't out of the woods yet.
OOC: Question for everyone: When is a good time for me to post? I think I can manage almost anytime.
Carver, the paladin centaur, shows that not only his moral compass is true, but also his geographical one. He spends a couple of hours with absolute clarity about your course, being a great help to Crosseye.
Cameron, the small Jancassais Cleric makes use of his dagger to scrape, carefully, the Toad's venom from his boot.
Cameron only: Highlight to display spoiler: {Yes, your dagger gets one dose of the venom.}
Mack the monk, the other halfling, walks next to Cameron, examining the ground trying to see more toads, and not really paying attention to the forest or the direction they are going.
But Atlas, the warrior, does, and helps Crosseye find a couple of hidden game trails to ease the March.
Crosseye keeps doing a good enough job guiding you thru the forest, and with the combined efforts of all keep doing a good advance, until...
OOC: I think is medium Xp advance, but let me confirm
---
OOC: We have a new player, Cade, and his character, the young human sorcerer Orba. This is her intro.
Orba keep walking on the forest. The map she brought had been very useful, and she felt like finally she was going to meet her long awaited destiny. All her life she had felt how she was meant for more, for bigger things, like something stuck on her chest. But that feeling was lifting. The future is now!
That is when she heard the scream.
---
The ravine was some 30' deep, with a small clear stream running over round rocks. Crosseye lead you parallel to it to find a place to cross. Gaston approaches a big colorful flower, extending his hand to grab it.
Cameron sees clearly how a root raised from the ground to trip Gaston feet. In a couple of seconds he is rolling and tumbling on a 20' muddy slope towards the ravine, giving speed, and flying away from the edge at the end of it. His speed takes him to the vertical wall at the other side of the ravine, where he crashes hard but manages to grab some roots before falling to the river rocks, 20' behind him. There is blood on his brow.
"Help! Help me! I am slipping!"
As you see him hanging there you also see a mysterious girl standing some 5' on top of him, on the other ravine edge.
So Gaston and Orba are now on the other side of the ravine. Gaston under here just outside her reach if she were to try to reach him from the top. For the rest to reach Gaston would need to descent a 20' muddy slope (acrobatics roll needed not to tumble down as Gaston did, just to reach the edge of the ravine, some 10' away from the other ravine wall where Gaston is hanging. Gaston seems in distress, and will probably let go in 1 round, falling 20 feet to the river rocks.

Knowing where Carver keeps his rope in his sadlebags, Irdalas grabs one end of it.
"Grab the other end!" He yells to the group as he jumps down the slope sliding down towards Gaston. "Hold on! He shouts as he gets closer to Gaston.
Seeing the fear in the man's eyes as his hands start to slip, Irdalas feels his gut wrench as unwanted memories come back to him. He is not letting Gaston die this easily.

OOC: Taking a risk here but my Acrobatics is quite high. Irdalas also has a personal motivation for this, writing my background as we speak. Acrobatics check: 13 crap... Let me know if I have to make other checks for holding onto the rope etc

Previously
Cameron places the dagger he used to scrape his boot back inside his coat, saving it for later. The dagger he readied was a different one.

Currently
Cameron sees the plant trip Gaston and briefly thinks Again? Are Carver and I destined to relive all of the hardships we endured in the Fist? This brief thought slows his hand enough that the dagger he throws is too late to stop Gaston from tripping. He aims the blade to sever the stem halfway between the ground and the flower. With speed you would not attribute to a cleric his hand then dips to his belt and comes up with the whip that rides there.A gentle flick and it is ready to help protect the rest of the group as they try to retrieve Gaston, a task Cameron is clearly too weak and too light to try to attempt.
His eyes do flick across the ravine though to light on the woman on the other side. In a polite voice, strangely devoid of stress from the current situation he calls to her.
" Pardon me, but we seem to have lost our patron down in the ravine and it appears he is slipping to his doom. Could you lend us a hand?"

Actions
Readied action to throw a dagger should anything attack the group used on the flower, hits AC 18 for 2 damage.
Move action
draw my whip
Standard action
Ready the whip to attack anything else that may come at the group with 15' reach
readied action hits AC 5 for... yeah nevermind.

Life has finally started for me! I know that I can find my place in the world! Did that furry woodland creature just smile at me? I just glad I lost those crazy blue jays, and cardinals... I think they wanted me to break into song. Her personal musings about adventure in the great wide somewhere are interrupted by a decidedly high pitched scream. She takes a moment to check and see if she is in immediate danger. She is apparently distracted by a group of men on the other side of the ravine shouting and tumbling down the slope at her.

She sees the elf scampering down the slope, and hears the halfling question. Looking down past her feet she see a very handsome, very pained looking man, "Hey there, Handsome, you look like you're in a little trouble." Her stomach turns to jelly, but fear will make this worse; so she does what she always does- bluff, "Alright, Handsome, if you fell-- well it would be bad, but you are strong and agile and I know that if you time a jump you can land safely on the rocks." She can visualize Gaston's safe descent like a feather floating down a stairwell.

Falling for a girl like you - CoDM Corsario
Friday October 31st, 2014 2:13:22 AM

Cameron throws his dagger into the root where Gaston tripped, an action the rest of you don't quite understand ("Whatever for did he do that?" - you all think), draws his whip and, as if nothing was happening, and no necks where in imminent danger of breaking, ask for the mysterious girl that just appeared for help.
At the same time, quick as wind, Irdalas grabs an end of Carver's rope and with great ability, and disregard for his safety, moves down the slope trying to reach Gaston in time. Gaston's eyes fill with hope first, and alarm later, when both he and Irdalas realize he won't be able to stop, and will go over the slope edge towards the riverbank, even before Gaston.
Mack, small and agile, starts descending the slope, manages to get in position near Gaston and starts getting a rope from his backpack.
Irdalas tries to stop but the slope angle as well as the wet and muddy surface don't let him stop. He sees the slope end just a couple steps in front of him, grabs the rope with all his strength and prays someone is holding the other end of it, as he goes over the edge.
And hearing his prayers are Carver and Atlas... the centaur braces for holding him. He feels the rope tense when Irdalas fall over the ledge, and feels how his hooves give way, as he is pulled and starts to slide down the slope too! Towards Mack! Atlas makes a big effort and avoids them both from falling, but he also feels how his feet are starting to slip!
Crosseye asks who needs help while go grabbing his own rope and grappling hook.
Gaston, seeing help is not coming, screams in a high pitched voice!
"Help! I can't hold any longer!"
And then the mysterious girl calls to him. In his mind her words flash an idea: "Let go, you can do it!"
He looks at her sky blue eyes for a second, a million thoughts racing in his mind.
"Let go, you can do it!"
He releases the branch, and falls down, towards the rocks.
Orba gesticulates and a glow seems to fly, in a fraction from a second, from her eyes towards Gaston's, which hasn't stop looking at hers. His fast fall stops, and he starts gently float down, all the way without breaking eye contact with Orba. Almost all the way down he smiles at her.
-----------
Irdalas is slowing descending, thanks to Carver and Atlas, some 15' over the river bank. They are starting to slide down, and need a DC 15 Strength check to stop slipping, with Atlas doing a DC 10 Aid Another Strength check to grant a +2 bonus to Carver. If they can't do it they will start to gain momentum in his downward path. A path that goes directly over Mack. Mack, you will need a DC 20 Strength check to stop them if they are unable to stop by themselves, or a DC 15 Acrobatics to get out of the way. Or can throw yourself against them and do a DC 10 Aid Another Strength check to grant them another +2 to their check, sharing their fate.
Cameron and Crosseye are next to the slope, rope in hand.

Falling for a girl like you - CoDM Corsario
Saturday November 1st, 2014 3:44:50 AM

You all jump as a single team to avoid go down the ravine. Cameron quick thinking, Atlas and Irdalas, and even Crosseye efforts help Carver regain his footing so he can use his physical might to get out of the slope. But the small Mack showed resolve and bravery by choosing to risk being trampled by his friends, in order to help them.
OOC:Mack, you gain a hero point! Congratulations!
In no time you have Gaston up. He thank you all profusely.
"I am deeply moved by your efforts to help me. Thank you, and I'll make sure to grant you the proper reward!"
Some minutes later you find a place for Orba to ford the river. Gaston is the first to approach her.
"My lady, I owe you my life! What is your name? How did you got here?"
My friends, this is our "free chatting weekend"! If you can make the introductions before Monday, I think it will be for the best! So fell free to post as much as you can before Monday night. Saludos

" Thanks for saving Gaston, his comrades in the Chancers Club will be happy to have him back."
" My name is Cameron Honeytamer Steelshaper. Right now I am helping see to the well being of this group of adventurers by healing what ails them, which so far is nothing."
" If I might ask, what are you doing all alone out here in the Eastern Woods? This place doesn't have the best record for being safe to travel in groups, I can't imagine trying it alone."

Cameron turns to Gaston and hands him the severed flower.
" Here's the blossom you were after. I saw the roots lift clear out of the ground to trip you down the slope so I cut it down. We should get moving soon. This place keeps trying to get rid of us. I think it doesn't much like us."
A keen observer will note that Cameron has put his whip away and his hand is again filled with a normal looking throwing dagger.
If Gaston or the others are damaged after the tumble down the hill, Cameron will offer to heal them.
Readied throwing dagger, same as before, thrown at anything that attacks the group.
Dagger hits AC 6 for 3 damage... or more likely skitters off into the woods.

I neglected to say what Cameron looks like before, let me fix that.
The halfling wears a long red coat over a masterwork of dwarven crafting in the form of a chain shirt. Daggers are visible at his belt, poking from the tops of his boots and tucked into the insides of the coat. His belt also carries an odd weapon on it, a whip. He carries a backpack and not much else. He has unruly hair of a platinum blond color and he also wears a goatee. Both appear to be in need of a trim.
Getting a better look you can see the halfling is wearing boots, odd for a halfling. The coat definitely has had some kind of patches removed from it. The discolored cloth where they were removed makes the coat look somewhat mottled.

Atlas manages his way down the rest of the slope and listens to the introductions as he takes a moment to look about. He studies each of the group individually for a few seconds to make sure everyone is OK. By their movements and words they all seem fine, so he steps up to the girl and introduces himself, "Good day, I am Atlas Sunowl. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. My friends here have already given you a little background on us. May we know your name and your purpose for traveling through these woods? Sunday November 2nd, 2014 10:16:47 PM

OOC: Sorry, Saturday is chore day and date night, Sunday is church. I may post another response on Monday, but I was out of pocket for the free chat weekend. By the way, I love you guys, so much right now!

"Now, wait, Lord, I am not a lady, nor do I seek to imposture nobility. I am Miss Zetianos, (She pronounces it ze-TIa-knows.) if you prefer Goodie Zee," she says. "I have left my childhood home in Plateau City, and I am on my way to see the world Izen, Culverwood, Oeax Sea, the Tuar Islands, the Wall of Kaazel-" She takes a heavy breath, her excitement and joy radiates from her face, "Did you know that there is a city in the south hung from hooks in the sky? And, my bunkmate Cindi, that's with an 'I,' says that the people there are ruled by the three oldest women in the city, did you hear of that?" Now, more to herself than Gaston, "I have to see that!"

As she stands lost in thought, and each man in the party takes a minute to engage her in conversation. You get an opportunity to look at her. A small, slight girl stands there; she is tight, compact and sinewy. Her movements are either graceful and fluid, or lightening quick and sudden. She has a golden tan to her olive skin and exotic faraway features. Her hair is straight, glossy and blue-black. She wears a practical outfit, boy's work trousers dark grey, an unbleached boys' work shirt, a tight fitting bodice of black grey wool, and old worn grey boots. On her head she has wound a hijab of blue, grey, and black with tiny lemon yellow stiches racing in parallel lines lengthwise.

Her sky blue eyes, bright and shimmering, dart this way and that taking in the new sights about her. A long curved knife slaps against her thigh in her hip scabbard, and her rucksack was recently purchased and she shuffles to hold the unfamiliar weight. There is one thing only that describes the knife, her eyes, and backpack: New.

When Zee speaks to Cameron and Ramak she crouches down in a squat. The action and her expression seems to be significant, she respects the halflings, and meets them eye to eye. Not many halflings lived long with Magda, it is not right to see halfling child starve."Hey, nice to meet you Ramak. I am very impressed by that show of courage! You are a giant-sized scoop of hero in a halfling-sized package, Big Guy!" She turns to Cameron, "Is that Dwarven in your accent, Master Honeytamer-Steelshaper? I bet you are beating the halflette girls off with a stick, Lady Killer!" She fans herself dramatically, "Who doesn't love a mysterious foreign accent?"

She was about to answer the "What's-a-girl-like-you-doing-in-a-wood-like-this" question, when she hears Carver. "Oh! I didn't do anything more than help talk Mr. Handsome into some common sense. He saw that he could jump and he did! By the way, I love your accent, I could listen to you talk all day, Taurish is so pretty. I am Miss Zetianos, or Zee."

When Crosseye introduces himself at her feet he sees a large, sleek smokey-grey cat, up and down the flanks and back of the cat are black inky spots. The girl speaks in a thick north Plateau accent, "Pips. To me." The cat slips back in line with its mistress in a way that still broadcasts, "The decision was mutual. She says,"Thanks I taught Pips to hunt, so that she could come along and help track some small game." Again she gets ready to answer the "What's-a-girl-like-you-doing-in-a-wood-like-this" question, but she is interrupted by Atlas Sunowl...

What to say about Atlas Sunowl? He is so bossy and serious, checking to see if everyone is safe. Yeah we are all safe Mr. I-am-in-charge-and-the-fate-of-the-team-is-on-my-shoulders. Oh My! Look at those shoulders... Hey! Cute! He has bushy eyebrows, it makes him so cute, McBushy-Brow... the Bush-inator... Mr. How 'bout right brow? Oh crap, he is talking to me. What is he saying? When Atlas finishes he can't be sure, but maybe he sees a grin on Zee's face for just a sec. Zee does what any rational teen girl would do: she smiles her dazzling smile, turn 180 degrees to Gaston, flips out her hair so that Atlas is sure to watch her walk off, and tells Gaston the answer to Atlas' question. She smiles beautifully at the second place catch, "You see, I want to see the world, and I want to meet all the people in it. I have had a wonderful time so far, the woods are so pretty and wild. I have never seen such a lovelier place, and I think I never will. I have seen all sorts of birds, and deer, and squirrels, and I saw the cutest little toads. One croaked at me and I feed it a piece of jerky, it was adorable! I just keep looking at my map and I haven't been lead wrong, yet!" She smiles as she brandishes her map. As she unfolds it she offers to show it to Crosseye, Gaston, and the halflings, she cuts her eyes over her shoulder to see if Atlas is still watching.

Zee noticed that the elf was particularly silent in all this, but they are a long lived and patient race. She has decided to wait for the elf to approach her. 'Better to be silent and thought a ruffian, than offend an elf a prove yourself one.' as Auntie Alemi used to say.

OOC: How are you running the 18 year-old Carver (John C.)? Because the Taurs have a short life span is he 18 like a human teen, or middle aged for a Tuar, therefore grounded and settled. Give me a metaphor, I am a high school teacher. Is he Jock Carver oldest player on the football team, or Cool Coach Carver the newest coach of the team?

Cameron (David F) AC 18 (T 14, FF 15) CMD 12 HP11/11 Character Sheet

Cameron answers soberly, in a 'this is how it will be' tone of voice. It isn't threatening, not to Zee anyway. Instead it is more more cold and detached than. And yes, it bears a a detectably strong dwarven accent.
"The only halfling lady I ever met and tried to get to know was in denial. She blamed herself for things that other people tried to inflict on her. Then Morgan, the dwarf that raised me was murdered, presumably by the same person or people that killed my parents and want to kill me. Jancassais will eventually teach me, through my devotion to her, how to find them. When that day comes I will find them and have my revenge. Morgan sought them to bring them to justice. When I find them they will wish Morgan had. Until then, Jancassais is the only lady I have time to court."
No one other than Carver has heard this before. It is clear Cameron has seen pain and loss more than once in his lifetime. Instead of breaking him though, it has forged him into an instrument of revenge. Not yet a perfect instrument, but every trial perfects him a little more..

"I am sorry for my rash actions, I acted before I thought the situation through. I will be more careful next time." He says with a serious frown on his face.
To the more perceptive of you, you can see that there's more to the story but he doesn't seem to want to get into it right now.

"Greetings, Miss Zee. I am Irdalas Fendral and I am quite sure we will get to know each other better soon. But forgive me if I take a moment to compose myself."

Carver is young in age, but there is a hint he has more experience than his age would indicate. Including a very slight limp that is barely noticeable in his right rear leg, When he has his armor off, there is an old headed wound there, it looks like it was gouged by five knives from in front of the hip area (near the backbone) all the way down almost to the knee. Even his close friend Cameron has never heard the story of where he got it.

Atlas notices that Zee answers his question, but to Gaston. He doesn't put much thought to it, there are too many dangers around to worry about that right now.

"Alright everyone, now that the introductions are done, it's time to get moving again. Gaston, this is your quest, are you OK with Zee joining us? He makes a very elegant flourish with her hands. After which he takes hers, gently, and kisses it.
"I always pay my debts, specially to woman as beautiful and special as yourself. For starters, how would you be to work for me, as this fine gentlemen are, to accompany me in this adventure?"
----------
Mack uses the time to search about... What make Gaston trip?
He doesn't see any out fo the ordinary creature about, even while hiding himself from it (if it is there). About the root... It seems like an ordinary root, but it was pulled out of the ground... or it pulled itself out of the ground. You see clearly the root was partially in the ground, but now is out of it. But how? Or who did it?

After the formalities with Zee are set he sees all of you.

It feels my heart with courage and joy! But we will have time to celebrate, and reward, your bravery and loyalty, now we must keep going!"

Zee purses her lips and thinks about Gaston's offer. "Well, I can cook and clean and do a little mending," referring the few skills that Atlas mentioned, Zee says, "But, that is all I will be doing in the way of personal jobs!"

Zee makes sure to cross in front of Atlas to Crosseye. She is pleased to share her map, and even offers the use of her cat, that she has trained to hunt, "Mainly, I trained her to be self-sufficient, but she can help scout and keep us alert." She heels the cat to her side and then flicks her wrist in a forward motion, "Pips. Scout." The cat yawns and stretches, but takes off at a quick trot. Zee then hands over her map, narrating her adventures so far from Plateau City to the ravine in the Eastern Woods.

Zee starts off walking close by Crosseye, pointing out "that lovely flower," "those pretty tree trunks," and "OH! Isn't that the brightest blue in the sky, you have ever seen?" The longer you walk the more she chatters about the lovely woods, and the condition of your equipment, what she could mend, or clean, or suggestions on what to replace. Later, she makes her rounds to visit everyone, but Cameron and Atlas. When she finds herself walking near Cameron, she becomes very nervous and smiles politely; then she hers her name being called and speeds her walking pace. Around Atlas, she blushes and then scowls, as if it his fault she is embarrassed.

A regular theme creeps into her conversations with Gaston, Crosseye, Craver, Irdalas, and even Mack. "Where are we going?" "What is at the center of the forest?" "Yes, but why does Gaston want to be in the center?" "Why did you pick this forest?" Zee will require an exact answer to the question, "What is Gaston doing in the woods?"

For the next round, his eyes and exposed skin host a faint silver and golden glimmer.

Crosseye, now with Zee's help besides the help from his friends, advances with resolve and making excellent time. The forest seems to open for you and let you pass unmolested. Zee becomes the center of attention, with many glances and questions going back and forth.
You start to think in finding a good place to eat.
Slowly Cameron stops... Something doesn't smell good. Literally. Maybe a dead animal?

If someone, who is shrunk approaches Zee will scream hysterically and point to the sound, "Hide! Oh gods, its coming after us!"

Zee will hide behind the nearest blade of grass, and after her initial terror, devolve into hysterical fits of crying and laughing. She is unable to stay silent, and devoid of reason, until she is exhausted or someone intervenes.

Mack, Zee and Atlas see how they shrink to a diminutive size, and get lost in the grass. They can see each other, but they have troubles seeing the rest of their now huge companions.
Zee screams and run for cover behind a piece of wood, now the size of a house, as Mack hides away. Atlas remains in place, looking for the source of the sound.
A huge monster start to appear over the tall grass blades. A huge furry creature of dark grey, with huge eyes and huge teeth, looking for you, hungry and hunting. You all recognize it for what is it. The best hunter, the best killing machine in all of nature. Keen eyes, even keener sense of smell, and a predilection of playing with it's prey before killing it.
It is Pips, Zee's cat, ready to pounce on its prey. You three! His eyes are right now fixed on Atlas while it approaches as silently as a shadow, even with it's huge size.
All of the rest: Highlight to display spoiler: {Zee screams panicked and crunches on on the ground, while screaming that something is after her. Mack very silently crouches, and takes his harmonica out and starts to make sounds, like if calling for someone, while Atlas ask for help while turning to see Pips, Zee's cat companion, in awe, as if the cat is something else. The cat back hairs stand while it crouches and seemingly prepares to jump on Atlas.
But the most worrisome sight is Gaston, taking out a fine dagger and getting ready to pierce his own neck, while screaming:
"Take it off me!"
The veggieskunk, seeing most of you avoided the effect, runs away, escaping.
Cameron screams:
" Don't hurt the critter, it is just protecting it's home. We need to use the rope to herd the others away from the critter and wait for the musk to wear off. I'll go in and get the rope around them, you guys help me put enough pressure on it to herd them out."

" The fastest way to save you, since I didn't know how long the toxin would las was to delay the poison. I think it might still affect you for a few moments when the prayer I used wears off. Cameron shrugs and answers Zee's concerned question about his well being
" No, I am quite fresh. I can still heal or aid the others in combat without restriction. The delaying prayer was a simple one granted me by Jancassais because of the toxins I study. By all means let's move further into the woods. I wonder what the next sign we are on the right path will be."
Turning to Gaston, " I cannot remove the delaying prayer so in about an hour you may wig out again. We should be able to keep you from stabbing yourself then. I gave up the prayer to detect poison so that I could create light for our cold camps last night, so I don't know if it is still affecting you. Let's hope not."
If moving on Cameron will use his hunter's skills to help guide Crosseye. As always he slips a throwing dagger out and readies it in case they are attacked.

While moving ahead is all fine and dandy, getting there safely is far more important. While Cameron may have spells granted him available, I'd rather any of you spell casters be fully rested up and ready for trouble if we do in deed bump into it."

Atlas shakes off the hallucination and steadies himself. He then hunts down Mack to find out what the heck he was up to trying to impale him. Mack finds him first and cuts him off to explain and apologize. Atlas decides that the halfling is crazy enough to try such a thing, so he accepts his apology, tells him to be more careful next time, and heads over to Zee...knowing that the halfling will never truly be more careful.

"Zee, while I'm feeling just find and I would rather not waste time sitting around waiting for the dark, we don't know what the next hallucination is going to be. So while I don't like it, I'm inclined to accept the suggestion made by Cameron. Considering the circumstances, maybe you can join me on watch and we can talk about our approach the next time we face a foe ten times our size. What do you say?"

After Zee answers, Atlas leans in closer and talks to her in a hushed voice so that others cannot hear. Spoiler - only for Zee Highlight to display spoiler: {"Zee, what did you see that makes you think Cameron did this? Zee huffs and crumples to a log nearby. "What are you doing out here, Atlas? Some lord wants to see the center of the woods? Why? That seems so messed up. How will the Chancers know that he reached the center?" She shakes herself and continues to talk to Atlas, as she begins her work as cook and maid. She asks for a portion of food from the party, not Cameron. When Cameron advises against the fire she does what she always did, nods, says "Yes, that's a good idea," and ((Prestidigitation and kindling)) starts a small. There is little heat, little smoke, and even less heat, but it will warm the three largish stones that she nestled around it. Stupid Halfling, and your stupid skunk can go jump in a bleeding river.

She turns and looks at Atlas, "I don't understand why you travel with a priest of Night Terror." Zee begins to tell you of her past, "Babs was a girl I grew up with in the orphanage. Well, she was a halfling, just six years old. You... *sob*" Zee pulls out a crude, clay pot that you could have never imagined in her pack, "People make fun of Halflings and the amount they eat, but... the babies, they need the food. You don't know what is like when they don't eat. Halfling babies can't starve, it is not pretty."

She goes to each man, er traveler sorry Carver, except that poison priest and asks for a small tribute of food. In the end she has enough for a stew; Atlas is her last person to ask for food, "So, Babs, was a six year old, starving to death. She was sick and thin and everyday Ms. Magda told her, 'You should and stop being so unlovable!' I couldn't take it, so I stole food from Magda. When she caught me, she told me that the goddess of poison and retribution would repay me. That night, Babs was sold to a merchant who left for Ga'al land. I- I- need to finish supper. *sob*" She cries silently over the stew pot, and eight rounds later(Prestidigitation), Zee has prepared a soup that looks like a thin broth with bite size chunks of meat and beans, but it smells great. It tastes spicy, hearty, and warm it is the perfect end to a long day (if you close your eyes).

If pressed further, Zee seems to have a near limitless supply of stories about sad orphans, cruel overseer, and the monsters, boogeymen, that are called the gods of Testing. You are sure that she is afraid of the them for sure.

As you eat Zee cleans up the stew pot, that broke apart at the end of the meal. Then she asks for anything that need cleaning. She place one garment in her lap, dabs it with a bit of water and in a few rounds. She stacks it up one her other side, clean, pressed, and folded; but not mended. If Cameron takes advantage she saves his for last, they are mysteriously discolored pink, everything pink. Though it starts to fade an hour later.

" A fire huh? Great, let me know how that turns out. I'll be over here, hopefully out of the forest's "I'm pissed because you don't listen " zone. We tried for a full day to get into the forest, and it gently but firmly redirected us to the edge every time. So we slept on it and tried again, all putting our heads together toward the goal of not losing our way so we didn't get redirected back to the edge. That worked. We met some toads that it seems the forest just conjured up in our path to have a look at us. If we threatened them or even talked about hurting them, they focused on us and got ready to poison us. Therefore we have been keeping a cold camp, not because we like eating cold food and not seeing at night but because some Woldian woods are 'awake' and take offense to being misused."

As darkness gathers and Cameron's attempts to sleep before his watch start to fade he decides to tell his story to the group. He rejoins them and sticks a stick upright in the ground between them. He conjures a light, lime green in color and not terribly bright , but enough to see by on the tip of the stick. (cast light) Since Zee is uneasy she seems to be spreading her fears, maybe on purpose, maybe not, to the others. Maybe the story of how he got here from where he started will clear things up a little. He hopes so. These peope seem to be the ones he should be with, at least thats how he reads the signs.

" Carver knows alot of this , but probably not all of it. This is how, and why I follow Jancassais. My parents were adventurers. They ran with a group, led by Morgan Steelshaper, a paladin of Pantheon. They worked in the contested kingdoms, where borders and rulers, and your friends, could change overnight. My mother was a cleric of Flower. She kept the group alive and tried to help the people they always found themselves helping. With so many political changes and a new ruler every few years, the common people got trod upon pretty often. They helped those people regain their lands, or tax money or kidnapped or enslaved loved ones. My father was a rogue, in almost every sense of the word. He stole, he cheated, and he lied, and he made a good deal of coin at it. When he met my mother all of that changed. He didn't do any of those things to better himself anymore, but to get her attention and gain her affection. They made some enemies in those days, but they helped alot of people and gained more friends than enemies. Then they retired. Some like my parents started a family. Some poured themselves into their crafts, making magic and mundane works of art. Every fie years they gathered at the Tears of the Wold Inn and remembered the 'old days'. When I was ten, my parents left for that anniversary and never came back."
Instead of them, Morgan showed up the next day. He was beaten and bloody, and armed to the teeth. He told me my parents were missing and probably dead, and that the people that did it were after both him and me as well. He wasn't there for five minutes, urging me to get dressed and grab my things, when the door was kicked in by a group of thugs. They fought, and he won. I watched from the closet, clutching the few things I had gathered and was terrified. He took a list off of those thugs, like the one on the men that had attacked him at the Inn. We fled and went back to his home in the Scab, where he and his family raised me as their own."
" He taught me the rudiments of the forge, but it held no magic for me like it did him. He taught me to fight, but a halfling hasn't the mass and strength to fight in heavy armor like a dwarf. Most of the time I slipped away and read the books he and his father and grandfather for generations had collected on ancient dwarven works of stone, metal and magic. I learned to hide, and I learned to track. I learned the bow and found I could fight pretty well at range. I also learned to hunt and hate the giants that plagued the Scab."
" When I grew up I left to join the Mailed Fist, to make something of myself that wasn't given to me by the Steelshaper clan. They had even adopted me and named me a dwarf-kin, making it possible for me to become one of their children and be considered for the family name and home when they died. So I went to the Fist. I earned my way there. I mastered the bow, the woodlands, and learned who I was going to be, or so I thought."
" The Fist didn't like people that could make up their own minds. They succeeded by people following orders and rules, Carver understood that, but I couldn't make it work out in my own head. On one mission they told us to go bolster a town that was under siege by gnolls. That was our mission. On the way we met a caravan of traveling performers, a circus, that had been ravaged by a gnoll raiding party. Only their performing lions and hill giant strongman had managed to chase the gnolls off. But night was coming and they would be overrun as soon as we left to follow our mission. We camped with them and in the morning, our sergeants told us to Pack up and head to the town that was our objective. Our Fists packed up and headed out, following orders. "

Cameron pauses and renews the light spell. He is quiet for a moment and then goes on, more quietly.

" That's when I betrayed them and stayed behind to help the caravan. The others followed orders and saved the town, with one of our comrades was killed. I stayed with the performers and got them to town, all except the remaining lion and one performer I couldn't reach in time when the gnolls attacked us. That action, not following that order lost me a promotion to lead our Fist, but it saved over a dozen men, women and children, and one hill giant. It put an end to a rampaging group of almost a score of gnolls and it gave the Fist valuable intelligence about how the gnolls were moving around. It also got Carver and I a more clear perspective on how the gods of the Wold view us and their chosen area of influence."
"The comrade that died, was a good friend to a witch in our Fist. He convinced the rest of us that we had to try and bring the comrade back to life. He petitioned Gargul and a few minutes later, we found ourselves in the Land of Rest. We walked around and finally found ourselves standing in front of Gargul's throne. Gargul was mostly compassionate about the one that had died, who was a cleric of Flower. She was there too, Flower herself. I remember how she made us all feel. She wiped away any guilt or horror that any of us had when we thought of how our comrade had died. She even assured me that I had done the right thing in betraying my friends and saving the performers. Gargul allowed him to return, then became angry and cast us out when he didn't show Gargul or even Flower any respect. So I know the gods are real, and that they take their chosen areas of influence very seriously."
"Anyway, we were sent on another mission, to find where the gnolls came from. It led us to the Cursed Swamp. Carver and the other Cetaur in our group became ill from standing in the water so much, because centaurs can't climb. After we rescued some slaves from a group of gnolls, Carver got really sick. So I took him and the slaves back to the Citadel while the others finished the mission. They healed Carver, and I learned I had another trip to make."
" Morgan had started investigating the people that killed his friends and had been murdered. My grandfather sent word to the Fist, and I assume a sizable donation, saying I needed to return home since I was his son so that I could bury him. I returned home and Carver came with me, saying he was supposed to. I spent days in the temple preparing Morgan to be sent back to the stone. All the while I was there I kept hearing nagging whispers. They said things like 'He was a paladin of Pantheon, following the rule of justice, looking for the killers to bring them in, look where it got him'. I always looked for the source, but never found it. Until one night I was finishing the rites and prayers the dwarves use to make a desecrated corpse ready for the ground when the speaker appeared. We spoke, and he told me that he could see in my devotion to a dwarf that was not even my real blood and desire to make this right. I told him I was making it right, returning Morgan to the way he had been before dying, before they desecrated his body, so he could be returned to the stone and be with his ancestors. "
"To make a very long conversation short, he said what I really wanted was to find the ones who did this, the ones who killed my parents and all their friends and tried to kill me and put it behind me, making sure they never tried to come after me again. He said when I admitted that and wanted his help he would be there. I went home, slept on it and realized I did want it to end. But I had no clues, and no idea where to start. When I went to the temple that day, I again found him there. He explained all about Jancassais and how, with her help I could finish what Morgan started. It would require devotion and sacrifice, but it could be done, even against foes as powerful as they were, by someone as powerless as I. He told me to think it over and when I was sure, I could drink from the vial he gave me and Morgan would be ready to continue on his journey, and I would be ready to start mine."
"Two more days of rituals, and I thought about the offer. In a case like Morgan's a night of prayer and vigil was required before the ceremony to lay him to rest. That night, as I watched over his body I made my decision, and I drank the vial. It was poison. It knocked me out, stole all of the skills and powers I had, and turned me into a blank slate with only my memories remaining intact. Later, I found that the experiences, the skills and powers I had lost, had revitalized the ravaged and desecrated corpse of Morgan. He was returned to the stone, and I was reborn to take up Jancassais whip, and her devotion. I would learn, through trial and devotion what I needed to know to find the people responsible. When I did, the revenge I chose was my own affair."
"So here we are. I follow her ideals of hunting, since that is what I am doing, hunting the ones responsible for Morgan and my parents and all their friends deaths. I also follow her ideals of poison, which came in handy today to help Gaston not stab himself. I chose poison because I am small and weak. Poison levels the playing field with larger, stronger opponents. It is also how I came to follow Jancassais. I make my devotions and I help any others I find if they need help. Nightly I either review the few clues I have, praying for insight and a better understanding so that I can learn more, or I sacrifice a part of myself through eating poisoned creatures so that I can learn the stillness and clarity I must have to see the path I must walk. She grants me prayers to help me on my way and sometimes shows me signs that I am on the right path. We have seen two toxic creatures today and emerged none the worse for wear from them. To me these are her trials and signs that guide me."

Unless there are questions, Cameron gets up and returns to his bedroll in the crook of a tree. He sleeps in his armor, until midnight. At midnight he rises, makes his devotions to Jancassais and takes his turn on watch.

As Cameron speaks, Carver nods, having known, heard about or been there for most of it. He still has no problem with his little friend, each must follow their own hearts. He does with his following of Gargul. He has even met Gargul and Flower as well, if Gargul was dissatisfied with how Carver followed him, he'd have said so.
When Cameron is finished, "Cameron, I have faith in your choices, I can even understand them, just know I may not always agree with your choices, but I will respect them. That's what friends do for their friends.
You're accepting of my following Gargul, as well as my relative whom I believe Gargul uses as a messenger. So I guess we are even that respect, if others here have a problem with those of us who believe in the divine powers, let them know that as adventurers, we put our faith in many things.
We trust in our wits, or skill in arms but most importantly, we trust in our faith in the divine powers to guide our actions."

As Zee tries to make a fire, carver keeps pouring water on the kindling.
Miss, we decided not to anger the forest by burning it. It would be ill advised to irritate the woods. And I say this knowing that the woods are alive, not just with creatures, but with a spirit that guides those animals. So please stop creating fire with your finger tips."
As many times as she tries to start the fire, Carver will extinguish it.

Not having the full effects of the skunk as the others, I did get some. I was seeing some normal and others as little creatures. The affects didn't last long but long enough for some fun with my mine. With the effects wearing off I shake my head and see my friends grow back to their full sizes. "Glad to see you all back to your selfs what ever that is" I say jokingly with a big smile.

"Seeing as we have gone though so much today, a rest would be good for us all. It would clear our minds and rest us all up for what ever tomorrow might bring." I say to the group.

With that, like the others, I help set the camp without a fire, like the night before. I eat some of my rations. Sit with the others listening to their story's for awhile, but knowing that I have a watch much later I excuse myself. I head to a nice quite place not far from the main group, roll out my bedroll. I take my armor off but keep it close with both my bow and great axe and settle in to get some sleep.

After the preaching of Cameron, Zee feels for him, but she is confused by his religion, and afraid after years of abuse for Magda. The conflict of emotion is evident as she set to the task of her fire... and gets water dumped on her head from the Centaur. She at first thinks it must be an accident and listens with half an ear, but as he pours more water on her fire, she asks him to repeat himself. As he does, she grins a wicked grin, Gotcha, Faker!

This time she is on her feet and in the bully's face. "You need more time in the Rogue and Circus Quarters to fool me, Liar! If, as you say, these woods are guarded by spirits that you won't risk offending, why do you continue to travel deep into the woods? The spirits has not attempted to stop me from gathering dry kindling that litters the forest floor and could catch the whole wood on fire. The woods have not molested by cook fires, that I made small and quenched once my work was done. If you are a warrior of the gods, be consistent! March to the heart of the wood and light campfires as any person would, or march to the edge and heed ALL the forest's messages! I have met many cons and crooks dressed in grey robes, but even they knew to be consistent in the lies they tell." Zee squares her shoulders and stares the paladin down, "Know this, Master Carver, I was hired to cook and clean for Gaston, and you if you interfere with my work again- You. Will. Regret. It!"

Thankfully, the cook stones have gotten hot enough to cook with, and in a surprisingly short time. Zee continues to try and make the stew Gaston is paying for, but she will not be offering the clergy any, and she is hurt that Crosseye is sneaking away.

If you are there Forest Spirits... I so stupid, If you are there and you do hate fires fill this meadow with red flowers, but if you are not angry with me send a white flower, and if you want nothing to do with us at all send a black flower. Zee snorts, maybe a chuckle... maybe a laugh... 16 year old girls are so emotional. ...and when there are no flowers, it will confirm what I already know: gods, men, and the forests care nothing for me.

Hmm, threats of revenge flow like water, but she does not pay the Lady homage, indeed she fears Her. Empty threats are not the Lady's way. Maybe they are not this child's way either. Best to mollify Carver before he gets a burr in his fur about it.
" Let it go Carver. We have survived worse, just think about how we survived Linden in the Fist. I'll still be well over here. An abundance of caution was never my hallmark, but dark and cold food never hurt anyone, so I'll still side with caution."
" How do I fix this I wonder. Divided we will be easy prey when we do meet a threat in here. Carver is already hampered by the trees, keeping him from charging properly. The other fighters remover their armor at night, making them vulnerable. A fight in the night time could be bad. I hope I can save them if it comes to that.
Cameron moves his sleeping gear a bit further away and finds another suitable tree to spend the night in. He sleeps in his armor, until midnight. At midnight he rises, makes his devotions to Jancassais and takes his turn on watch.

Cameron awakes short;y before midnight, enough time before his watch for him to pay homage to jancassais. Since the meditation he did last night paid off so well he decides to try that again. He kneels, still as a stone for a few minutes alone near his bedroll in the darkness, willing his mind and body to be still. He then takes out the small scorpion he found earlier while making camp, snaps it in half to release the poison inside it and ingests it. He waits a few moments, again willing his mind and body to calmness. As he feels the venom take hold and numb him further he allows his mind to wander over the present situation. Slowly his subconscious makes connections. He sees the toads again the eyes of the forest, the skunk, probably some other sensory projection. He sees the girl, still a child by human terms. He sees her use magic, but not acknowledge that she is casting a spell. Was she like Prudence? When her family sold her to the Fist she was setting things on fire whenever she got emotional. Stress, happiness, sadness all were triggers snf fire was Pru's outlet. What triggered this girl. She would claim to perform simple tasks and yet she was clearly using prestidigitation to perform them. Cameron had used the handy utility spell all the time in the Fist to keep his uniform and body clean, warm and always presentable, even in the swamp he was prade ground ready. This was the same thing.
He sees the emotional state of the girl as well. professing fear and dislike for Jancassais in one breath and threatening vengeance in the next. He recalls her total loss of composure when the skunk musk sprayed them. Fear of her own cat was understandable given the situation. But fear like that would get her killed in a real combat. An adventurer must master their fear, use it as a tool to defeat the obstacles that stand in their way. His mind runs through the scene again and he recalls how she cast off all of the new looking gear, shrieking that it should all go back to "them". Who were "they"?
Finally he knows what to do. If it works it should heal her fears and allow her to focus on the present and not so much on the past. Wasn't that good advice? Maybe, someday, he would be able to do that.
As his time of reverence draws to a close he prays for the magics he will need to carry out his plan.
Moving back into the camp, he nearly trips and impales himself in a shallow trench lined with spikes. Maybe his plan wouldn't work after all, if she felt the need to erect defenses between them. He relieves Mack and asks the halfling to help him, once it was light, to find some good natural tea making leaves in the forest. Pine needles, nettles, bark, whatever would make a passable tea. During his watch he digs a small pitand clears the area around it. He then dampens the pit with a gentle rain shower and collects some of the water. He gathers wood to make a small and very controlled fire in the pit for breakfast, provided nothing has happened from the fire the night before.
In the morning, Cameron starts the morning making tea. He includes a lock of his hair, since halflings are historically brave plus whatever flavoring leaves and other tea items Mack and he can gather. He invites Zee to have some tea and to accept his apology that his Goddess frightens her. Having reflected on this overnight he is sure that the tea will allow her to be more trusting of Jancassais and Cameron, her cleric. He promises that it is not poisonous ( having checked the brew since he isn't sure what all he and Mack put in it with a detect poison prayer) The others are welcome to have some tea as well, perhaps so that they can form a bit of a better bond in case they do meet a real threat here in the woods.

If anyone advises against the fire she does what she always did, nods, says "Yes, that's a good idea," and ((Prestidigitation and kindling)) starts a small, fire of kindling and twigs anyway. There is little heat, little smoke, and even less heat, but it will warm the three largish stones that she nestled around it.
Carver tries to stop her from doing the fire, but Gaston intervenes.
"Let her be, she will be careful, and only use fallen wood. I will allow it. Stop your bickering."
While Mack plays the Bango, Zee goes to each traveler, except (sorry Carver) that poison priest and asks for a small tribute of food. Mack gives her some leaves he finds, with great small, that helps giving the food a better flavor. In the end she has enough for a stew. Six to eight rounds later(Prestidigitation), Zee has prepared a soup that looks like a thin broth with bite size chunks of meat and beans, but it smells great. It tastes spicy, hearty, and warm it is the perfect end to a long day (if you close your eyes).
Gaston accepts the broth and the cleaning of his clothes. After Zee finishes he asks her to approach him.
"You saved me, and you seem to be a very good worker. I like you, and from now on consider yourself on my service, with all the benefits and privileges that confers. Also the responsibilities. But from now on you will want for nothing I can give to you."
At night Atlas keeps his eyes alert, and detects something unnerving.
The forest trees' leaves move and rustle, making an almost soothing noise. But there is no wind.
Morning arrives, after a quiet night, with a small "toy" trench between Zee and Carver/ Cameron, you prepare and start walking again.
---
You keep advancing with a good pace, deeper into the woods. Around midday, Crosseye suddenly stops, and signals you all to be silent.
He advances slowly, and after he see there is no immediate danger, he motions you to advance into a clearing. In it there is a number of small twig statues. They are vaguely humanoid, and a strange language is carved into the chests of the creatures. At the foot of each is a small collection of various picked berries, a few bracelets and necklaces woven from bark strips and water gourds, and round beautiful pebbles.
Gaston approaches the statues...
"The language is High Woldian. Weird to find it here, in the middle of nowhere. The symbols are..." - he points to each statue in turn - "...nature, path, source, divine, understand and know. Nonsensical, I recon. What would this trash be for?"
He kneels to grab on of the bark necklaces, examining it.
"Worthless."
Not magical nor poisoned. Nothing around that you can see.

"Maybe not Gaston. Are we or are we not trying to follow a nature's path of sorts. We are indeed trying to reach the center, where the source is usually located. We are trying to understand why the forest keeps misdirecting us away from this center area.....
As I said before, The Wold is known to have forests that have spirits and are guided by more than just nature.... Showing they are blessed by the Divine. So I wouldn't just dismiss these trinkets as worthless."

Zee smiles at Gaston's word in the night, then she frowns, "I will accept a permeant position in your service as what? I am a trained midwife, and cooked and cleaned at the orphanage. What ever you need I will attempt to serve. Except, you may not ask those tasks that a husband asks of a wife, Sir. I am low born, but I am not without honor." She smiles, "I do not speak to offend you, Lord Loroutte. I think you may have some thing to teach me about honor, too; but many a girl I knew did not make herself plain and suffered later."

Zee sleeps well, and rises with Crosseye at the fourth watch ((OOC: How long is a watch three hours?)) She looks very unkempt, and her hair is a frightful rats' nest, but soon she is polished and coiffed and looking as fresh, pressed, and ready as ever. In the early watch she notices all those little matters that men and boys never heed. A pair of socks that were not dried are set right. This and that are reordered, and set in proper sight, Crosseye (because he is up) and Lord Laroutte (because she is in his employ) receive the lion's share of her ministries. At the rise of camp, a steaming kettle of fresh tea is set out, it tastes wonderful though it seems a little pale, and all the fires are put out, buried, and the ground is clear of debris.

By late morning, Zee has been beating herself up. She acted out of fear. She has been judgmental and aloof. The things that she hated about the adults in her life. Lord Laroutte has done nothing but receive her with kindness and he likes the clergy. She has been rotten to them all night.

At the clearing as the others start to investigate the statues, she walks up to Cameron and then Carver. "I acted like a scared child last night, that was bad day, and I listened to the lies of an old woman. Please forgive me." Zee offers a hand to Carver, if he accepts she grape his hand firmly and says, "I can feel that my life will be better having you as a friend and not an enemy." A ray of golden light mists from her hand to Carver's and she smiles confident in his next actions.

To Cameron she says, "You did not ask anything of me, and I have treated you poorly. Please, forgive my fear. I don't understand your devotion, but you have not asked me to, and more importantly you have not asked me to pay a tithe. I am letting myself be tormented by a hateful old woman's stories. Can we start again, as friends?" She offers her hand to Cameron as well. If he accepts, she says, "I promise to offer my help the next time you call on me. As a sign of good faith between us." Faint light plays across her hand and into Cameron's skin.

She has no clue about the poppets, but she knows how to make a daisy chain wreath and a few twig-grass dollies from the meadow, so she pulls her knife and starts to harvest a few dolls worth of clippings. [b]"I can make some baubles to add to the offerings, would that help?" ((Perception roll.))

It is a spell, one I used to use before I forgot how. It is simple, as magics go, but still requires the ability of an arcane spellcaster to perform, or a competent rogue who learns the knack from an arcane spellcaster. What you did yesterday, lowering Gaston to the valley below without him being harmed is magic too. More powerful, but still magic. Why hide it? It can be a great asset."

Gaston looks at the girl, and smiles.
"Of course I won't take advantage of you! Please rest at ease, I am no ruffian to take advantage of you! Rest at ease. I won't do anything... that you don't want me to do."

On the Morning:
At Cameron's offer of tea Gaston politely accepts it, and even drinks it (well, most of it).

In the clearing:
"Making an offering?" - Gaston seems unconvinced - "Well, I trust in your judgement! But if I am going to make an offer, it will be a worthy one!"
He puts a gold coin in front of every figure.
"There! That is worth much more than all the rest, put together!"
After you put your offering you start walking again. After 5 minutes or so you stumble into another mystery.
In a tree truck you find 7 wooden bowls with clear water. Next to it, in another tree truck, 7 batches of violet berries.
"Seems we did something good, my friends, as the forest seems to have rewarded us for our offerings!"
Gaston goes for the water and berries, ready to eat them.

I eat a couple berries, and put on a bracelet and necklace. I pick out one of the coolest looking pebbles (in my mind), and roll it around in my hand. She wanted to be stealthy, the clerics got mad about the fire, but she makes a great deal of noise and trips along the way, so everyone is watch as she picks up the pebbles.

Zee moves on to join the trail and listens to Cameron. Her face broadcasts confusion, then surprise, "I have never heard this. I was not ever told about magic, I think you need a book, and lots of study." As Cameron continues his speechifying along the road; she seems doubtful, then hopeful, and later contemplative.

When they see the trees and the offerings, Zee is game. She follows Lord Laroutte's lead and trusts her liege, she takes her portion of berries and water.

Before she sits to eat the berries, she finds old habits resurfacing. She digs deep in herself and finds the will to see the wold as magic, and her place in that magic. See stares first at the berries and then at the water. Are these magic gifts?

" One of the comrades Carver and I had in the Fist was a sorceress. When she was a young girl, a little older than 10 years old I think she said, strange fires started to break out around her home. Finally she realized she was making the fires, without thinking about it, when her emotions got the better of her. So if her parents scolded her, or her siblings teased her, a fire would start. Her parents were, not highly educated, more knowledge of farming and taking care of a farm and its animals than book learning, and quite religious. They decided she was possessed by some demon . They took her to the Fist recruiter and signed her up to be rid of her. The Sergeant o duty was sympathetic, and saw that either he would take her in, or she would meet a bad end, so he inducted her, first as staff to help around the kitchen, then when he found out about the magic she could do, she was apprenticed to an experienced mage that could guide her. Her affinity was for fire spells. Fire spells worked better for her than for other mages and she had a knack for learning them. Obviously to a military organization like the Mailed Fist this was great. She fit in and was a valued member of our Fist.:
When they get to the berries and water, Cameron stops them for a moment and concentrates on the food and drink. His prayers show no signs of toxin in them so he motions them to partake of the forest's offerings. He does so as well, since refusing a gift is often considered rude.

Atlas has been quiet since the hallucinations and his conversation with Zee. For those of you that were with him at the tree, you have noticed a significant shift in his demeanor since they started traveling. He's less confident, less talkative, and not smiling at all. Something is off, but any attempt to speak to him about it results in a polite, yet firm response along the lines of, "I'm fine, just focusing on the task at hand"

When they get to the clearing and the idols, he walks up to each and offers a few words spoken under his breath that you cannot here. He does not offer anything else.

At the trees with the water and berries Atlas pauses. Nothing looks strange about them, but why are they here? "Does anyone recognize these berries? Are they safe to eat? And what's the intent...reward, test, death, kindness? Atlas takes a bowl of water and berries, but he doesn't eat them as he waits for a response from the others, or their reaction if they are foolish enough to eat them without knowing what they are.

Atlas listens to the group as they eat their berries and drink the water. After seeing Gaston's reaction he chuckles, but then tries the items himself. He grimaces when he does so. Without trying any more, he walks over to Crosseye and offers him what he has left.

Carver comes over talks to Atlas about Gaston. He listens and nods his head in agreement. "I agree Carver, but the man is a fool. I would have no qualm with us ending this quest early and heading home with only half our pay. Men like him should not be admired. He is brash and egotistical. Is that who the Chancers really want in their mix? If so then we have a bigger problem than finding the center of the forest. We have a group that is highly influential at the Tree that is full of buffoons. I would rather take this fight back home and fix it at it's core." With that statement Carver see's Atlas's eyes pop open as he goes silent, thinking.

"Carver, thank you, our conversation has given me an idea."

Atlas searches out Mack as the rest are finishing up the berries and water. "Mack, you have an interest in herbs, berries, and stuff. Come with me, I want to talk a short walk around the camp to see if we can find where these came from."

As Atlas and Mac walk they talk, looking for any signs of where the berries might have been picked. When they get back Atlas searches out Gaston. "Gaston, those berries tasted terrible to me as well. Look, we got off to a rough start. In the end, I just want to get paid, so consider me at your service. Well, at least at your service with a little less attitude than before anyway. Now, let's talk about how we get to the middle of this forest. It is clear that something is trying to keep us out, but it is also clear that this something has a desire for us to appreciate the forest. For you to get to the center and ultimately into the Chancers, we need to appease this something. Kindness and respect are going to be the keys to unlocking this treasure. My sword is useless and I hate that, but I'll suck it up to get paid. So what do you say? Should we follow their lead so that you can achieve your reward and I can receive my pay?"

You are now deep in the woods, and the whimsical direction changed have ceased and the entire wood seems a darker and much more foreboding place. You feel unwelcome and unwanted after Gaston "speech". No birds are heard now.

Gaston drink a glass of the exquisite wine he brought, and starts to tell you about the previous adventures, missions and rescues he has found himself in. You are not sure they are true, but he seem very proud of himself.
"Not like this "mission"! This haven't been what I expected, so far it has been boring, a dull affair! I certainly have lead a good life, got better adventures, and surely the Chancer's club will be proud to accept me in their midst anyway. And you? Why do you plan for your future? You need to plan ahead, and try to improve yourselves! Maybe, if you are constant, brave, and have friends like me, you can also become famous explorers and adventurers! So please tell me, what are your plans? What do you want to achieve? Why do you seek adventure, in the first place?"

Perception 19
Cameron had coddled this noble for days. He had played to the man's vanity, his refined taste and made him think that every good idea Cameron came up with was his own. Now that they have gotten this far, he decides that after all he has seen he does not hold a shred of respect for the woods.
Cameron worships two of the four aspects of Jancassais, He reveres the hunter aspect of vengeance, seeking and studying and stalking your prey. Knowing it's strengths and its weaknesses and always respecting it because if you don't it can kill you. He reveres her use of venom because poison puts even the smallest creatures, spiders, scorpions and vipers like the nest in the stump on an even footing with much larger, more powerful creatures.
Cameron is behind Carver when the nobleman denounces the forest and declares it is not worth his respect. Instantly Cameron hears the wood go silent, as if it were holding its breath. When that happens in the world of men, an insult is delivered and the room goes quiet, there is either forgiveness in the next moment, or revenge. the comparison has barely crossed his mind when the orison is quietly and covertly cast. ( Cast create water) Rain begins to fall on Gaston, and only Gaston.
Cameron instantly realizes what he has done and as the nobleman inevitably splutters, Cameron covers his mouth and gasps. He makes great show of searching the canopy and finally says " I think maybe you should show the forest more respect Gaston. It seems the toads eyes were not the only sensory organs the forest has. Somehow it must have ears too."
Cameron prays that his quick and nonlethal vengeance has sated the wood, but the mood does not seem to improve. As Camp is made he notes several possible defensive tweaks that can be made to the camp. He moves up to Atlas, Carver, Crosseye and Irdalas and points them out, quietly.
" See that big dead tree? Toppled over it would block off one side of the camp. Over there, in that stump is a nest of tiny vipers. They aren't aggressive, but if they were relocated they could make another 'trap' to guard the camp. Over there, are some briars and thorn bushes, they would be useful to caltrop another approach to the camp and up there, there are plenty of thin but strong vines that could easily make well camouflaged trip lines. The wood has gone silent and I think it no longer wishes to tolerate him. We are guilty by association and I fear we will be caught in the crossfire. I think the forest will come for us tonight. We need to make ready. Pass this information on to Mack and Zee. They were a convenient distraction for Gaston so that we could talk for a moment."
" Look, I am not a whole lot of good in a close in fight, and I know that recent events have made me look, well, less trustworthy than your other healer. But the Fist taught me defense, and it taught me how it is important to work as a team. If stuff goes down tonight I will grant you all Jancassais blessing. It will guide your had a little bit and make your heart less fearful. After that I will try and get behind stuff to make it easier for you guys that ARE good in a fight to hit. Once the fight is over we can make more informed decisions, but I REALLY want to see the center of this wood tomorrow. Be on your guard tonight. I think we should have campfires and torches ready to light for when the forest comes calling."
Cameron can help gather the thorn bushes and the vines. Even with his ability to handle poisons he won't be much use with the snakes, snakes just creep him out. Tiny ones were OK, but ones big enough to eat him terrified him. He is also probably too weak to be much help with the tree, but lends his strength anyway.
Gather thorn bushes ( Dexterity check? 21)
Aid one of the strong people to position the tree. Strength check 1 FAIL Cameron is just always in the way.
Climb check to get to the vines... no armor... 3, not much help there either

When Gaston asks what they all plan to do with their lives Cameron is again shocked by the man's inability to listen to or remember the slightest tale anyone else tells. Just last night Cameron laid out his life's story and what he plans for the future, but tonight he repeats it.
' I adventure to gain the power and knowledge to walk Jancassais's path. When I am ready she will reveal who it is that has hunted me, Morgan and my parents for the past 23 or more years. When she does I will find them, and make them pay. Now I am just a dull billet of steel, just placed in the forge. Through adventures, trial and hardship the bellows are pumped and I am heated, shaped and finally, sharpened into a tool that she can use to exact revenge. After that, if I live through it, I will probably seek out other weak people who need her help with their own problems."

I begin to feel more and more like we are on the "wrong" side here as we travel thru these woods with Gaston. Maybe the test isn't really for Gaston.... maybe it's for us. Unless the Chancers really are a worthless bunch. I first think we should tie up Gaston and probably offer him to the forest. But I don't think the majority of the group will be with me on that. So the temptation to leave the camp and set up one of my own a ways away is drawing on me. I don't feel like abandoning my party would be the right thing to do completely, but also have little to no loyalty to more than half of them, barely knowing who they are. I have a hard time with this decision (the lesser of 2 evils), leaving Irdalas, Crosseye, and Atlas, but also can't sneak away if I tell them ALL of them my thoughts and plans. So I tell only Atlas when I get a chance. If he doesn't talk me out of it (heck, maybe he'll join me?).....

I decide I'm going to leave the party in some random direction, head about an hour away, and find a nice, safe place to sleep. My main focus is to find those birds again.

Zee enjoys the continued hike into the center of the woods, but a thought continues to trouble her, What if the shrines were at the center? She can't help but feel that she is missing something.

When the camp stops, and Lord Laroutte says what he says. Zee can't help but shake her head in that "you-are-not-as-smart-as-any-of-the-trees-or-rocks-you-just-insulted" way, but Zee does what he asks and serves the wine. When she is sure she is not being watched she pours her serving of wine, that Gaston was insistent that she have, What kind of lord wants his servants to drink with him, that is odd. She pours her serving of wine on the trunk of a nearby tree. "Here, friend, you have helped me escape a fate worse than death, lead me to an adventure, shared a gift with me... I think you deserve a celebration more than any of us."

Zee dutifully collects the laundry, and starts the evening meal. She is worried about Cameron's words, How do I know if I have magic? As she thinks about these things her doubts and worries seem to trip up the magic. Almost as if her magic comes better when she is unaware that she has any. Tonight's supper is meager sandwiches and a weak, common tea that is just barely warm.

Zee does not answer Lord Laroutte's question, Magda says, 'Masters do not want to here the worthless hopes and dreams of dirty inferiors.' Granny Gargoyle says, 'Be humble, that you may be elevated. The proud will bow at Death's feet.'

Carver listens to Cameron speak, he nods as he comments on Gaston."I expected you to feel that way, that's what I mentioned to Atlas earlier. He needs a good dose of what ales him in the ways of the Wold.
As for the natural defenses you point out, I noticed all but the vines, and since they are up there, and I'm down here, they can stay up there, because I'm not climbing up after them. I am a Centaur after all."

Carver will help move those items that are on the ground and put them where Cameron says is best.
"I have an Ioun torch I can use if we get attacks or I can loan it out. I also have a hat that has a candle on it, you can light it up and it does the same thing."
After setting the "traps" Carver hears Gaston ask what we want to do with our lives....
"I want to follow in my Ancestors footsteps so to speak. She died in the defense of her heed, tribe, clan or soldiers, whichever term you wish to use for them.
I have a goal that is probably just as impossible, but I plan on doing my utmost to reunite the Taurs. The Wold would be a stronger and safer place if the three races were not mostly hostile towards one another. We, as the Taurish races, need to accept that the past is in the past. We also need to look to the future, a future where all three races work as one and in peace together to better everyone of us.
I expect to have a hard time, well near an impossible time of doing so. But then again, I have Gargul as my guide as well as the spirits he sends as messengers to pass on his words to guide my actions."

Carver then goes and sits off to the side, he'd laid out his vision quest, now it was time to contemplate it some more, as he was no where powerful enough to convince anyone other than himself that reuniting was the best for all....

"Perhaps this quest is a lesson in humility for you Gaston! My uncle always said: Judge a man's character by how he treats the ones he deems lesser than himself. You have shown no respect to this forest what so ever and as a side note I very much doubt it is your 'lesser' in any way. Start treating it with the respect it deserves or you will find yourself, and this party by association, wanting. I don't think you will ever find the true center of this forest unless you approach it with the awe it deserves. And thus you will never be admitted to the Chancers as I believe this to be their true final test for you."
Irdalas turn around leaving Gaston to think about this and helps with the fortification of the camp, this night might turn ugly.

Thus with the windbag distracted, she says to Atlas and Cameron, "We were at the center, I think." She discusses her thoughts that the shrine words meant that that was the center. She is confident that they must leave in the morning.

She will not argue with Lord Laroutte and will not talk about questioning him in public.

At Atlas's prompting, Cameron makes one last try to convince Gaston nicely that the forest is formidable and worty of his respect.
" The forest has so far been able to be penetrated onlt by our combined ability to remain on the path. Can't you admit, that if the forest chose to, it could defeat each one of us? All it needs to do is lead us astray for maybe a week. We would run out of food and drink and then starve. For the forest that i a win. It doesn't need to throw a masive force against us, just keep disorienting us. Think how confounding the beginning of this quest was when we couldn't find our way into the forest. Now imagine how terrifying it would be if we couldn't find our way out."
Cameron lets the last statement hang for it is what he fears. He is confident he and the others can rewin the forest's respect, just not sure Gaston can.

Perception check =10, knowledge nature 22

Upon hearing Gaston and his disrespect for the forest and nature I have lost all repeat for him. I think to myself how have these city folk have ever survived. With the way they treat such powerful things. Like grandfather had taught me, you must respect nature and the things in it know matter how big or small, plant beast or other as they are all living. Because if you don't they have a way of getting you. I know all too we'll nature can provide and it can also take away. This man Gaston will learn that lesson all too soon i believe as we all will now because of him.

Seeing the other start to set up camp and move things around for defence I know they are thinking the same thing and preparing for the worst. To Cameron "Do you need help with that log?" I ask understanding what he is trying to do but having trouble move it. (strength check = 21) I easily move it to block one side of the camp. I also see the briars and thorn bushes and like my grandfather had show me I start to collect them (dex check = 4) but I was never good at it I always seem to get the briar stuck to me and pricked by the thorns. I stop collecting shortly after I started with a many stuck to me and bloody fingers. I guess I still need to work on that one even though I know how they should be used. At least that part I picked up from grandfather. (Smile with that though of him)

I go to find Atlas and have a private conversation with him "I am at my end with this man Atlas I will take no of his recklessness and disrespect for this forest and nature in general. I grew up in a place like this with my grandfather and know all to well how a place like this can be of beauty and savour, but if mistreated or disrespected it can also be your end! With what is see around the camp and hear what others have been saying they think the same way!" point out the other prepare defences for trying to hide away. [b]"If this man doesn't turn around and quickly we all will paid the price of HIS actions and right now I don't want to die because of his arrogance and stupidity. We need to do something about him. Either convince him the error of his ways or teach him the lesson one way or another!"[b]

While working he continues to chat with the others and keeps encouraging them to work with Gaston, to convince the crazy man that he needs to respect the forest if he is ever going to achieve his goal. He doesn't hide his disdain for the man, but everyone clearly sees that Atlas wants to get this mission over and he does not want to give up on it. Something has changed in him, you sense he is motivated, and he's back to talking a lot and making quick decisions.

Zee starts to bluff the man, distracting him from the other adventures' conversations. She continues to draw a more of Gaston's thoughts to the worthiness of the forest and the worthiness of all wild places to the Chancer's Club and the attractiveness of a man who appreciates nature. Sorry for missing last night's/this morning post, let see if we can recover it over the weekend.
Gaston seems unaffected by Cameron's "Forest Rain" on him. He smiles.
"If this is the best the forest can do, I say: Bring it!"
He goes away to change clothes, and calls Orba.
"Please wash these wet clothes tomorrow in the stream we passed some 5 minutes ago."
Irdalas tells Gaston some truths, at which the noble man answers.
"This is a lesson for me, you got that part right, but a lesson in how to lead. A lesson in how to become a member of the prestigious Chancer's club. About the center of the forest, we are there already. I said so."
Atlas also tries to educate Gaston about the forest and the respect it deserves. Cameron also tries to help.
"Well, we proved ourselves better than the forest, as we have reached the center defeating it's tricks and perils. But Atlas has my confidence, and I will try to... behave... with the forest. And I promise to be a better person to nature. With your help, I am sure I can learn and improve. Tomorrow we can stay during the day... commuting with the forest, so to speak, before parting home again. "
Perception DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {For some reason he is seeing at Zee while saying the last part.}
Cameron inform the group about some defensive measures they can prepare, and gets some thorny bushes ready to be "deployed". Crosseye later helps him moving the log to protect the eastern edge of camp.
Cameron and Carver later tells their life goals, again, for Gaston, and gets the impression he didn't quite register them. Again.
Mack and Atlas try to find the source of the berries they found, without success.
As Zee's pouring of his wine in a stump, which he sees, he demands the girl.
"Careful, that wine is not to be wasted like that!"
But he seems fascinated by Zee when the girl ask him to talk about his favorite subject. Himself. He forgets about anything else while taking to the young girl.
Mack gets away and tries to "befriend" the forest by playing music to it. A unheard proposition, if you ask this DM. After some minutes playing as sweet music as he is able a couple of the birds he haven't find arrive by themselves, perch on a nearby branch, and stay to hear him play. He ends up sleeping away from the others, birds nested on a branch near by.
-------------------
The next morning arrive without a problem, after some of you keep watch.
Gaston seems in good spirits, and ask for you to teach him about the forest, how to track, how to forage, to recognize plants, seeds, berries and flowers.
He seems like a new man. Changed, interested, respectful.
"My friends, I think you are right. I need to learn all I can from such excellent adventurers as you, and become all that I can be. Learn to respect and love the forest, and be able to navigate it's perils with trust and ability. I won't forget your help and teachings, and I deeply thank you for support in this endeavor. i am sure the Chancer's Club will see your teaching in me, and will accept me without reservations in their midst. And when that happens..." - he puts his hand on Atlas shoulder - "I wont forget the people that helped me achieve my goals, and will make sure to help them achieve theirs. And my help, and my families, is enough to make my friends achieve great things."
After a good lunch prepared by Zee he leaves you.
"Please continue your defense preparations. It is a good idea to have a safe camp for tonight, just in case. I'll come back in an hour to review your work. No need to escort me, I will be off to do something I need to do alone."
OOC: Ok, you have a log in the eastern edge, and thorny bushes you can "deploy" wherever you want. What other defenses you get ready? What is your watch order during the night? Will Mack go sleep by himself again the next night?
-------------------
Zee goes away to wash Gaston's clothes. She is working on the stream, alone, when she hears something behind her. She turns quickly to face whatever danger is there.
Gaston is looking at her, with a charming smile and a wild flower in her hand.
"I bring you this. You are a very nice girl, and I think you will become a great woman. One worthy and able to do great things. I would love to see you become all that you can be."
He gives the flower to her, and moves to close the distance between them.
"You will become a beautiful woman indeed."
He tries to kiss her.
OOC: Cade, time to see what kind of reaction Gaston gets from Zee. Remember the Wold is PG-13 most aspects.

Zee expected this and she turns her face so that he can deliver a chaste kiss to her cheek. "Gaston," she giggles demurely, "I am covered in soap and muddy water!" Zee steps back to the bank and takes Gaston's hand, in her other hand she holds the perfectly clean, pressed and folded shirts. She leads him along the river bank to a nice spot for them to sit. ((Perception check fail)) Who knows if it is safe, but it is romantic. She lets him sit on a tree root and she snuggles up to him, with his arms wound round her, she sighs contentedly.

As the calm washes over them and the stream babbles on, Zee says, "If Carver is right and this forest has a living, thinking spirit... We owe it a great deal. That spirit lead us to each other, and dropped you off literally at my feet!" She giggles at her joke and continues, "That is miracle enough to make you devote a lifetime to preserving these woods."

((OOC: Take note boys, that how to get out of the woods alive, DM don't read the bragging. Now for the hard work.))

((Bluff Check 23!)): Zee sighs again, "Gaston, we have three problems. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but you have promises to keep. When we leave the woods, I cannot be your lover and laundress. You must decide to let me serve at your feet, or lay in your arms, but not both. As long as we are in the woods I will allow you to court me, but when we leave the woods I will take the servant's role up again. When we reach your quarters at the Tree of Parting you may choose to introduce me as a servant and I will take my quarters in your household and most likely never see you, or you can name me companion and friend. I will secure my own lodging and my own boarding, and I will allow you to call on me." Zee guides the conversation back to Gaston and his adventures for a bit.

((Bluff Check 9)): Later, she tries to get Gaston to think about her magic, if she has any, and what that will mean for a future together, but he is not interested in talking about it.

((Bluff Check 10)): Finally, she tries to broach the subject of what his family, friends, and Chancer Club cronies will think of him courting a nameless orphan, with no influence, no connections, and no money. Again, Gaston is a little less receptive to this than talking about Gaston and his wonderful Gaston-ness. So, Zee is content to let him lead, she sits and listens to the wonders of Gaston. It is easy to be petted and admired and fein interest in his boasts. She allows only small pecks and hugs, nothing more. Soon, she attempts to draw patterns in the dirt, and light phantom lights. Often, she guides Gaston to talking of his matchless appreciation of the wilderness and these woods especially.

Atlas does his best to play the roll as Gaston acts like they are comrades in arms. However, he sees Gaston during the end of his speech and he catches on. As soon as he is out of earshot he speaks to everyone left. "Alright, who put the happy juice in his water? Just kidding! Did you all see the way he looked at Zee? I think our hero is love struck. We can use this, but we need to convince Zee to go along with it for the safety of everyone involved. Granted, lets make sure they're not on watch together alone. I don't want her put into harms way if his desire becomes too much."

As Atlas speaks he sees Cameron follow Gaston, he nods to him as he goes and says, "Make sure she's safe Cameron, call us if you need us."

Atlas pauses and looks around for Mack to send him along as well, but he's no where to be found. "Has anyone seen Mack this morning?" That halfling is going to be the death of us."

Atlas takes a look around at the area and has a nagging feeling that this isn't going to continue to go well. To that end, he starts working on the defenses again. He talks through a plan with the group. The log is a good place for the archers and healers to have some protection. Maybe we can align the thorn bushes to the sides of it so that enemies are not coming at them from the sides. We can back up to the log with the archers and casters behind the log. If we have to retreat we can leap the log and run. Or if they come from the east then they we turn it around and the thorn bushes still protect us from the side. If they come at us from both directions then we're in trouble no matter what we do.

I'll take first watch with Gaston tonight again.

Camp Flower Garden - CoDM Corsario
Monday November 17th, 2014 11:54:07 PM

Cameron moves behind Gaston, quietly and cautiously, and discovers him looking for Zee.
Gaston makes his move! He starts to kiss the young girl, and just when he is about to stop the probably rape the girl talks Gaston's hand and leads him away. Cameron is unsure if to follow or not (he is not pepping tom) and he senses the girl knows what she is doing, so he turns back to the camp.
The young girl snuggles with Gaston and tells him she won't be her servant and her lover.
Gaston laughs...
"You are right! You can't be a match for me! I am a noble. But there are more ways to server me, not only laundering clothes! And those are better paying services, if you choose to perform them for me."
As she doesn't go along with his "interests", after some minutes Gaston stands.
"Well, I think you will be a laundress only. Your loss."
Mack stays away for the group, playing his banjo to his new bird friends, making like he exercises and napping. Good times.
Carver spends some time getting to know the place, their new camp and surrounding area.
Atlas starts seeing about the "defenses" for his base of operations, and he spots something very interesting.
An assassin vine.
He goes looking for Mack, and together they know everything there is to know about the plant, even how to relocate it to suit your purposes!
Gaston arrives, angry, and when you tell them about it, he only nods.
"Nice! Good work, carry on!"
He goes to his pack and retrieves a bottle and a mug. He starts drinking from it. The smell of fine scotch starts to permeate around the camp.
After a couple hours Gaston's mood has not improved, even as the bottle empties. He goes to grab the last bottle he is carrying, and starts to drink from it, this time directly from it.
He doesn't pay attention at what you do, and refuses to stop drinking.
"Mind your own business!"
After finishing the second bottle he seems to be in better mood, and quite drunk.
"Is this the best you have! I'll be a legend in the Chancer's Guild! And all I had to do was go tend a pretty garden in the middle of nowhere! Here we are boys, to base camp... Camp Flower Garden!"
He goes to the end of the camp, lowers his trousers and relieves himself on some bushes, not caring if Zee can see him.
"Let's water my plants! This is all this damn forest is... a piss-hole!"
A faint whisper spreads through a suddenly blowing breeze. Leaves rustle and birds fly away. Then, as suddenly as it began, all the forest falls silent.
OOC: So... you can finish your defensive preparations during the day... tell me what else do you do, besides the log on the east side and the thorny bushes at the end of it.
And you have a couple rounds to prepare before the battle. Besides your two rounds, roll initiative.
Yes, the forest has had enough, and it's coming for the intruders.
Is about to get dark, but there is still plenty light. Not fire is started yet, you all are in the camp, and Carver can tells you that besides the stream where Zee washed the clothes the is only forest all around.

Atlas, with the help of Mack's excellent forestry skills moves the assassin vine to the other end of the log to prevent them being flanked.

"Well gang, I'm no expert, but I think Gaston's pissing may be the last straw. Let's talk about a plan. I don't know what is coming or where it is coming from, but the log and the two ends are going to be our best friend. A couple fires would be great as well, but I don't know how you all feel about that. However, you're going to lose me if I'm trying to fight in the dark. I suggest 2 big ones on each side of the log about 20 feet out. That should light things up well enough.

"Let's all sleep by the log, we'll keep 2 on watch at all times. When we find out what and where is coming, we'll form up around the log. Spell Casters and archers on the opposite side of the log. Those prepared to fight hand-to-hand on the side where they are coming from. Zee, stay with the casters. We don't know what you're capable of, but what ever you do try not to hurt us.

"I'm on first watch, but Gaston is not going to be of any help. Zee, you'll fill his spot. Eyes and ears sharp tonight.

"Well...chime up if you think something else needs to be done. Otherwise let's get to it."

As day turns to night Atlas eats with the group, then starts sharpening his sword as he waits. His sword is in his hand, his shield is ready by his side, and he is in full armor.

Cameron is not a peeping tom, and by Gaston's demeanor when he gets back he is pretty sure how that encounter ended, and certain when Zee returns without harm. He climbs carefully into the canopy and cuts down a generous amount of vines. He uses these to make trip lines all around the camp. He helps the others relocate the Assassin vine so that it is near the thorn bushes, which it can animate to use as weapons to entangle foes that come into camp from that side. Finally, he was hoping the Ranger, used to dealing with animals and able to calm them would do it, but since it hasn't yet happened he gently removes the vipers from their nest and with a prayer to Jancassais , relocates them to better defend the camp. Near the end of the night he again uses Gaston's spade to make a shallow ditch for him to hide in back near the log. He gathers some sticks and such to make what looks like a brush pile in front of the ditch, like one might use to feed the fire.
He builds several torches and stakes them around the camp where they will provide light, but not illuminate him in his ditch. Cameron gets in his ditch and hides. He also prepares a dagger to throw at the first thing to attack the group.

Zee actions from Gaston says, "Well, I think you will be a laundress only. Your loss."

Zee sits stunned and heartbroken, He is a pig, and...NO ONE LOVES ME!" Zee throws her arms around the tree and cries, so sad and unhappy. Zee has felt so alone and that jerk. Slowly, (half way through his first scotch) sadness turns to rage! That well, the buffoon, the dandy! He is a pimple on the butt of Marteaus!"

Zee's rage focuses on the clothes nearby, "Laundress only?!" An unbidden prestidigitation ensures that the clothes bare lasting stains and scorch marks. Zee soon scoops up the clothes and starts marching to the camp. As she walks, her magic leaks as prestidigitations, her hair curls strand after strand, with gold and sliver sparks and pops and faint bursts of sound, soon her hair trails ghosts of sliver and gold lights. She walks up to the vulgar man and drops his laundry in the "muddy" ground at his feet. She looks at him foot to head exposed and drunk. She gives Gaston an unimpressed look meant to wither him, "You right there are worse things to do for money."

With the days events unfolding I know we are in for trouble. The forest is done as am I with this man Gaston. My temper grows and grows more towards him to the point of rage and pure hate for the man. I have never felt anything like it before in my life. For the most part I have always been calm and at peace. Not to say I have never been angry or mad before but this is different! It is pure hate towards something else. This new feeling is very strange, overpowering and scary to me. I do not like it at all. What has this new world done to me? Helping again with the defence of the camp, I do a survey of the area to see if there is anything more we need and do a check of the land for any advantage.

I see a nice tree that will work nicely at the back of the camp above the log that we had placed to block off the gound area.

I see Cameron playing with some small creatures and go to help. (wild empathy 9) "I hope this will help." I say to Cameron after I try to talk calmly and soothing to the vipers.

Seeing Gaston's actions and the hate I have for the man now, I go to Atlas "That is it! I am done with this man! With his disrespect for nature and the others here. He is nothing more then a drunk who thinks for nothing but himself. We need to take care of him now." I hold the rope from my backpack up.

After seeing what went on between Zee and Gaston and seeing her upset I go to her "That a girl. My dear you can do so much better. He is not worthy of such beauty as the likes of you!" With that I give her a big smile and hug to confront her.

After that I take in some food and the head up to my perch in the tree above the others. (I am above Cameron who is in his little hideout. In the tree.) This is going to be along night. I plan on not sleeping, as if I could anyway. I am in my armor with bow in hand ready for action and my trusty great axe at my side. I blend into the tree as best I can as to not be seen.

Atlas has a huge smile on his face as he watches the scene play out between Zee and Gaston. However, his grin turns to worry as Zee marches up to him and plants a big kiss on him. He doesn't stop her though, he just does so with his eyes on Gaston to make sure he's not charging...and to let him know that he's only doing this to spite him.

As Zee releases him, he holds her arm for a moment while he whispers to her, "Zee, I need you steady tonight. Put your heart and emotions in a box and focus on the task at hand. We'll deal with Gaston when this is done. However, please do not read my intentions wrong. I am in no place to make a beautiful girl like you happy. I'm an adventurer and don't mind bouncing a girl on my lap now and again, but you deserve better than the likes of me. Be strong Zee, today you become one of us. When this is all over we'll get you to someone that can help you with your magic abilities and then you won't have to ever work for slime like Gaston again."
