Combat Round 1 - Co DM Dan K  d20+5=12 ; 2d6+4=10 ; d4=3 ; d20+11=31 ;
Thursday August 28th, 2014 8:13:03 AM

Mack moves to get closer without becoming a snack to get a better view. The creature is not actually a worm, he discovers, but a ground burrowing insect. Great mandibles frame its head and mack can see 4 legs with spikes running down them.
Bonivus bolts upright from his sleeping roll to his feet, battle cry on his lips and scooping up his halbred.
Crosseye curses and begins to don his armor it takes 1 minute or 10 rounds to hastily don Scale armor
Caius bolts up right and moves towards the worm, that he now sees as Mack does. A burrowing insect. Nothing about such attacks come to mind, or much else beyond a possible personal meeting with Gargul tonight
Atlas calls for the group to form up and not go solo at the creature. Standing his straps on his shield and draws his sword

Jazzy, who had just stared speaking with the group, aquits himself well in the opening seconds of panic about him grabs his crossbow and loads it.

Across the great encampment on the ground beneath the Tree of Parting, the known heroes are not the only ones moving to defend the area. Irdalas' elven eyes pop open and sweep in the scene. He grabs his quiver and bow and stands to take in the scene of confusion about him

In still another area Udhomar, too, moves to get a good view of what transpires at such an early hour

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The creature that Mack and Bonivus are near, ignores them and strikes a horse. The barbed legs grab ahold as the creatures mandibles sink into the poor creatures flank. Incredibly the insect then lifts the entire horse clear of the ground.

Horses and mules cry in fear, filling the air. Most of the others on the ground with you are merchants and their families. Some are too drunk to awaken. Others are frozen in fear and confusion, moments from panic.

Combat Notes
Everyone was outside sleeping on the ground at the start of this encounter
We are in Combat rounds, pleas limit your actions appropriately
Standing from prone is a standard action, those of you who wanted to move while grabbing a weapon i allowed if you had a base attack +1
Atlas- sleeping in your armor will cause you to be fatigued -2 str and -2 dex

i know the map is busy, it is supposed to be. I did not mark the couple dozen other non combatants, but assume they are about, trying to hide and such

Caius remains still and waits for the approaching Atlas. While waiting, however, he touches Bonivus, bolstering him with the faith of Gargul. "Know that Gargul sides with you this day, Bonivus."

OOC: I cast Shield of Faith on Bonivus, granting him a +2 deflection bonus to AC. This is my first spell and I'm not sure how to do it, exactly. But as far as I can tell, all I have to do is touch him, right? I don't have to roll anything?

I work to get my armor on as fast as possible

Ooc if I get right I will not be able to enter combat for 10 rounds as I put on armor?

Co DM Dan K You can enter combat anytime you like, but unless you spend 10 rounds putting on your scale armor, your AC will not benefit from it

Mack (Eric R) AC: 15 (T 15 FF 12), CMD: 15; HP 9/9 Character Sheet
Thursday August 28th, 2014 1:46:37 PM

If there is anyone defenseless nearby, and in imminent danger, I move first to help get them to a safer spot. I'll use myself as a distraction to give them time if necessary, or try to wake them up and get them to move if needed (not sure how many of those types are nearby, or how close they are). I also look for a torch or other light source I can grab to help use as a distraction to the worm (again, just speculating there might be something nearby for me to grab in a round?). I had a good Perception check prior turn, so hoping I have a good feel for where things are. I'm obviously trying to stay "just" out of reach of the worm if possible, while distracting him. :) I hate to use the horses as bait, but for the immediate moment, it's better than us or other villagers. Once others are safe, I'd focus on untying them next, so they can flee or fight.

OOC: I gave a few options there; not sure which will work based. I'm assuming you can use best judgement from those based on what is close by?
Welcome all the newcomers! We have a big crowd here now! Can anyone pre-Heal me? :)

Thursday August 28th, 2014 2:37:21 PM

Seeing as Atlas, the one seemingly taking charge of this battle, is focusing his attention on the monstrosity on the right, Irdalas sprints in the direction of the one on the left hoping that a rain of arrows will distract it from killing more innocents.
Using his natural Elven agility, he crosses the terrain filled with scattering horses and wagons like an arrow.

OOC: my eventual target is O17 so I can get a clear shot on both targets, made 5 acrobatics checks for the terrain between current position and O17. I'll leave it up to the DM where I end up(somewhere around J22?). (first roll is also +8)

Udhomar (Johan) AC: 16 (+4 mage armor) (T16 FF 10), CMD: ? , HP:8/8 Sheet under construction
Thursday August 28th, 2014 4:00:00 PM

Udhomar tries to remain calm when he sees the giant earth-digging-horse-eating creature... He casts mage armor on himself to provide him a bit more of a chance against such a huge... euhh.... adversary...

Standing next to some frightened horses, he tries to calm them down: "easy now, I'll free you in a sec, and then you can run like a speeding bullet..."

OOC: as I didn't use move action, can I free the horse instead? If so, I' m doing that ;-)

Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 19; HP 13/13 Character Sheet
Friday August 29th, 2014 2:01:16 AM

Atlas wants to hold his ground, but it appears that Bonivus is the only one that is willing to form up. "Bonivus, it looks like it's you and I...time to make a mess." Atlas points to the worm to the West (L17:M19) and prepares to advance and attack during the next round with Bonivus by his side.

ooc: I didn't realize the armor impact to fatigue, I might have to adjust my sleeping habits!

Mack scoops up a torch and moves to where a couple is still lying on the ground. He directs them to the north, helping them regain their senses and to move through to safety.
Caius casts Shield of Faith on Bonivus and waits
Crosseye continues to hastily don his armor
Bonivus calls for those about in their sleeping rolls to clear out of the way
Atlas moves up to stand with Bonivus Atlas is fatigued - sleeping in Medium armor -2 Str Dex

Irdalas moves to the northeast, sliding between animals and wagons and over huddled people to get to a better vantage fro shooting

Udhomar casts Mage armor to help protect himself from the horse eating insect. he unties a reign set and the horse bolts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The insect before Bonivus and Atlas shakes the horse violently from side to side and drops the now dead animal to the ground. Its mandibles click and its bloody barbed legs weave in their direction

The other insect creature, too, grabs a horse, its mandibles and legs pocking on and lifting the animal clear of its hooves.

Mack (Eric R) AC: 15 (T 15 FF 12), CMD: 15; HP 9/9 Character Sheet
Friday August 29th, 2014 2:36:38 PM

I move to the opposite side of IT (the one at T9) as the rest of the party, hoping to give either the rest of the party or me an opportunity to attack the thing from behind. (I move to S5). I then attempt to free that horse (T5 horse) so it can get away, without taking my eyes off of the creature though.

Udhomar (Johan) AC: 16 (+4 mage armor) (T16 FF 10), CMD: ? , HP:8/8 Sheet under construction  d20=5 ; d20+2=22 ;

Udhomar slips to the other two horses nearby (N7) and tries to free them. In the meanwhile he looks out for a fire torch (perception of 22). If he sees people in his path that by some "yeasty brew" reason are still not awake, he gives them a poke with his quarterstaff en yells : "Get up and get out!!".

OOC: ignore first roll, still getting used to the mechanism, I forgot to use multiroll when adding bonusses...

Irdalas, in full sprint, continues towards a better vantage point.
Using his momentum he dodges the horse in front of him and jumps on top of the wagon. (OOC: 2 acrobatics checks +8 made: 17&11)
From his heightened position he takes in the battlefield. (Perception check +7=17)
Seeing the rest focused on the insect on the right Irdalas fires off 2 salvos towards the one on his left, hoping to keep it busy until the party deals with the other one.
(OOC: using rapid fire to shoot twice taking a -2 penalty on to hit (but a + to hit because the monster is large?): first shot = 7 + 5 - 2 = 10, dealing 8 dmg. Second shot = 14 + 5 - 2 = 17, dealing 5 dmg)
Irdalas shouts to the rest: "If this thing gets too angry at me, I might need some help here!"

"Aye Caius, let's put this creature to bed! Bonivus, good to be by your side again in battle!" Atlas closes the gap between himself and the worm-like creature, raising his sword and bringing it across the body of the creature.

After his attack Atlas regains his balance, positions his shield, and prepares for the creature to retaliate.

May he be proven strong today." Cauis then quickly returns to Atlas' side and prepares his quarter staff for battle.

Watching Atlas, Caius and Bonivus group up in front of the beast Jazzy realizes he won't be much use against something so big!

He gets a bit closer and finds a clear line of sight at first, allowing the others to get into position before letting loose a missile of arcane force. The air around his hand swirls into a fist sized ball, Jazzy pushes toward the creature and the ball of force elongates as it speeds toward the creatures face, smashing into it's target, doing minimal damage.

I think I'll stay back here! But don't forget about the other one! Jazzy yells, hoping to be heard over all the commotion. Glancing briefly over at the other creature.
poor horses, I hope we can stop this thing before it eats them all up! Maybe I can cause a little distraction so it'll leave them alone, at least for a moment or two. I won't be much help in actually killing the creatures. So, If I'm going to ask to tag along with this group I'd better show them I'm useful for something and not just a liability they need to protect, holding them back. Why would they want me along if they had to worry about me getting killed all the time, or if I'm not able to pull my own weight, as light as I may be.

Jazzy can probably be seen having this inner turmoil if someone glances at him. He switches his gaze between the two creatures after casting his spell.

I'd better think of something quick, show them I can help in one way or another.

I'm hoping you'll allow me to us a double move action for my "First Post" in combat rounds.

Actions:

2: Move action to Q,12 and Standard action to cast Magic Missile doing (d4+1) 4 damage

Mack moves around to the other side and frees another horse. His sharp senses do not pick out anything else beyond what he already knows is going on. He is also confident that the creature has not noticed him at all.
Crosseye continues putting on his armorSorry it just takes time
Caius closes with the monster and takes on a fully defensive stance, waiting on Atlas to close. You're spell can be cast next round
Atlas closes and strikes, his sword penetrating the thick carapace, releasing a gout of foul black ichor.
Jazzy moves to a better position and casts a bolt of energy, striking the creature. Single move Jazzy, but you have line of effect and cast your spell successfully. I put you as far as your 20' move could take you

Udhomar moves to two other horses and frees both of them. No one is sleeping it off near him and he spots a lantern hanging on the wagon

Irdalas moves past a horse and jumps atop the back of a flat wagon. Rapid Shot is Full Attack action Taking aim, he sends a shaft speeding on its way. The arrow skips off the creatures shell and sails into the night. He shouts to the rest: "If this thing gets too angry at me, I might need some help here!" Size of creature is built in to AC

The creature hisses and turns to lock in on Atlas. The head strikes out down at the man, but Atlas is able to get his shield up and deflect the incoming blow.

Atlas screams in pain as the creature latches onto his torso and legs, then screams again as he feels the acid start burning his skin. The pain is searing through his body and his mind is struggling with what to do to make it stop. It is too great, but Atlas holds on, mentally challenging himself to react. There are others here, they can attack while this creature mauls me. Maybe they can kill it before it kills me...the acid burns, it won't take long before I pass out.

"Aaaahhhhhhhh!" With a scream of determination Atlas strikes down with his long sword at the creature in the hopes of destroying it before it can kill him or the others! His aim is true and his blade strikes deep into the creature causing the black ooze to cover his sword and flow freely from the creature.

In 3.5 documentation I found that a creature loses it's Dex bonus to AC when grappling.
I couldn't find anything about this in the Pathfinder documentation though... can we get a ruling on this? (seems we're going to have to use every trick in the book to beat this encounter :D)

Crosseye, seeing Atlas in dire trouble, abandons his task of donning his armor, takes up his bow and fires. The shot sails wide right
Irdalas, too, shifts his target and sent a pair of arrows to assist.
Bonivus, Caius, Mack and Atlas all strike at the massve insect. Black ichor sprays from multiple hits and the creature falls dead.

Udhomer yells at the other one and fires his crossbow. The shot skips off the insect, but does get the things attention.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming completely out of the ground, the insect quickly comes at the man and lunges at him. Udhomar ducks aside and the deadly mandibles Clack! in the air to his left

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sounds of battle have reached the higher areas of the tree, as well as some on the ground who have run that direction. Several spells of light burst forth on the ground illuminating the entire area as if the noonday sun had just appeared. Shouts of attack and calls to arms echo through the boughs and branches. Help is mustering, but it is likely several minutes away!

Attacks of Opportunity: Generally, if you cast a spell, you provoke attacks of opportunity from threatening enemies. If you take damage from an attack of opportunity, you must make a concentration check (DC 10 + points of damage taken + the spell's level) or lose the spell. Spells that require only a free action to cast don't provoke attacks of opportunity.

Casting on the Defensive: Casting a spell while on the defensive does not provoke an attack of opportunity. It does, however, require a concentration check (DC 15 + double the spell's level) to successfully cast the spell. Failure means that you lose the spell.

Atlas heads directly back into battle after the healing of Caius and Mack's binding of his wounds.

From across the way, Irdalas puts two more arrows hurtling towards the last remaining creature and succeeds once

While Bonivus did not hurt the insect yet, his large presence distracts it from its originally intended snack. Udhomer, however stands firm in its way. Atlas yells a curse as he sees the mage grappled by the foul worm. He moves in close and takes a massive swing at the creature. His anger is released through his sword arm as the blade digs deep into it, spewing black blood.

Looking over he sees the mage's body is fully limp as the creatures mandibles dig into his shoulder and the legs graple his side. He knows this pain from just moments before and he is going to be damned to let this thing kill the wizard that so bravely stood his ground against the fearsome creature. His anger and desire to save this man resulted in something Atlas had never experienced. Without thought, something came over him, causing his body to finish the first attack and sweep around into a second. He was one with his blade, the ground, the air, and the creature, and with that his blade struck the creature again.

Mack Iraldas and Bonivus all attack the insect which for all appearances, has just killed a man. It is Atlas' charge and subsequent attacks, however, that slay the beast. Despite being still injured and knowing full well that the creature he charged could kill him in seconds, the young fighter attacked Atlas is awarded a Hero Point

The creature is dead, several legs still twitching into the air.

Udhomer lies upon the ground as well, bleeding out from a deep wound in his chest and shoulder. I would award a Hero Point here as well for standing ground against it but you already have a Hero Point as a starting character and you cannot have more Hero Points than your character level

Bother creatures are dead, there appears to be no more immediate threats and all in all, the quick actions of the party saved many lives. The carnage a pair of monstrous ravenous insects could have caused at such a late hour and with so many about is hard to imagine.

Nearly everyone rushes to the fallen mage to try and stop him from bleeding out. Crosseye is successful and the healing wave from Caius, assures that he won't be dying this night at least. Everyone is Healed 2HP, Udhomer is still unconscious

Atlas spies a merchant hiding under a nearby wagon and 'convinces' him to run for help. The man is moving as quickly as he can scramble from his hiding place in attempt to comply.

Those on the ground, now that the threat is gone, start o emerge from the their hiding spots. A scattering of applause which begins to escalate into cheers filters about and soon catches on o everyone below. Looking upward, the party can now see that people are gathering about the rails and looking down as well, smiles, waves, some cheers and more applause. One of the great lifts is currently descending to the ground. From your position it is hard to tell exactly who is on it, but there are quite a few of the nknown somebodies.

I speak for the Tree - Co DM Dan K
Wednesday September 10th, 2014 4:10:11 PM

The battle concluded, several in the group begin looking about the immediate area for additional threats, things of interest and items that may help the wounded. The ground about the base of the tree is highly trodden to near dirt from the over 100 horses and mules and other walking livestock as well as people and wagons.

The insects seem to have burrowed into the area from the south and relatively close to the surface. Examining one of the holes, you find it extends about 20' down and them turns on a horizontal path to the south. To what the creatures exactly are, neither the elf sharpshooter or Crosseye know. There are stories about the plains and other grazing lands that have trouble with ravenous giant burrowing creatures on occasion. Perhaps these are two of those. Both men conclude that the creature is not part of the natural world. Some sort of Magical Beast or Aberration perhaps. From stories you know that anything they catch they eat and that their digestive system is rather slow. Atlas gives the creatures a once over as well and can add no additional information

The burrow holes could extend for miles and could collapse at anytime. These resemble a worms path through the soil rather than a dug out tunnel that ant might make. The dirt and debris seems to be deposited directly behind the creatures, in a much less packed fashion of course, but the result is a mostly filled hole in the creatures wake instead of an open tunnel

Caius channels another radial blast of healing energy to those about him. All PC's Heal 5HP The mage's eyes flutter open as he regains consciousness.

The small crowd of onlookers is still giving the party plenty of room.

The Lift reaches the ground and stepping off is a group of 10. VonKlempt, the Fist Commander you instantly recognize. With him are 7 other obvious warriors of the Fist, armed with blade and bow and wearing Chain shirts. The last two do not appear to be combatants. Both men are elven. One of the seems to be in charge of the lift itself and when the lift settles upon the ground, is the only one who makes no move to exit. The other elf, still dressed in what you would consider sleeping attire exits the lift with the men of the Fist and apparently over the non verbal objection of Garret VonKlempt. You overhear the smallest snippet of their one sided conversation as the elf tells VonKlempt, "They are quite dead Commander and I am in no danger."

The group approaches the party, but none outstride the unknown elf, making him the first to arrive.

He extends his hand and a friendly smile is upon his face, "I am Folbre Ilyndrathyl, I assist in the keeping of business here and I believe I am in your debt." he pauses here, an invitation clearly to the group to speak

I speak for the Tree - Co DM Dan K

Folbre Ilyndrathyl, shakes anyone and everyone's hand that puts it out there with a genuine smile. "You did what needed doing quite right, but I must observe that no one else on the ground did. Captain VonKlempt informed me, as we were coming down, that you are the same group that brought in the wagon earlier this evening. No small feat to be sure. You have my congratulations."

Answering Atlas he shakes his head, "No, this is most definitely not a common occurrence, but again, we normally have enough room in the tree to house everyone safely off the ground. Between the caravan and the Chancers Ball..." He lifts his hands in resignation. He shakes hands again with you all and turns to leave. "I wish to extend an invitation to you all to Tree Tops Inn in the morning for breakfast. We can discuss your offer then good sirs" He smiles and steps back on the lift with the Captain, but not the other Mailed Fist men.

The captain nods and raises his hand in a toast, "Well done, were I could have more the likes of you in the Fist. Anything those Ankhegs ate are sure to be about still, you would do well to check. My men are your clean up detail. Direct them as you will. I too will see you in the morning at Tree Tops

Atlas gets a look of worry on his face after the Captain's last comment. "Well, that is an unpleasant thought. OK, lets do this one at a time. You seven and anyone else that wants to roll the dice, with me."

Atlas walks over to the last Ankheg that was killed. He pulls out his sword and shoves it deep into where he believes the creature's digestive system should be. He begins to cut the creature open to see what comes out. "Steady boys, I don't know what to expect here. It could be a bag of jewels or the devil himself."

Caius, you gain a bonus 1st level spell for your high wisdom. I see only one memorized on your list above. You should have a domain spell and 2 1st level spells. Also since you channel positive energy you don't need to pray for Cure spells, you can pray for another spell and spontaneously cast a cure in it's place, hope that helps.

Who is the ADM for this game? We are looking at 5 missed posts at this moment. From the little bit I could see from earlier ( when I could see back another week) it looks chronic for a couple of you. I find it best to check on Friday and send out a reminder to my posters that are behind so that they can catch up before the end of the week. I waited kinda late to do it this week and we might miss one too, but I wanted to mention it.
The consistent posting keeps people alive better in combat and makes for a more immersive game. It shows the rest of your group that you care about their ideas and opinions in game and allows them to post things with confidence, knowing that you will be there if they do something a little crazy.

As far as the wand goes it does make a huge difference. In the game I play in at home we found a half full cure light wounds wand in our first adventure and it has kept us ahead of the curve right up until 9th level. It frees the cleric to do other things with his spells ( though the game we are playing in is Mythic and curing is still about all I do)

OOC: I don't think we currently have an ADM for this game, although it sounded like one is required.

For the wand, I'm not used to these rules on them yet, but I was thinking there was some type of skill check needed to make one. And I don't think my class was especially good at it. I'm sure we have a fair number of people in the party that could do great with it, though. And having one person have that, plus a cleric, really would help us out a ton I would think. I like the idea of freeing up the cleric to be more than just the healer for the party. :)

Right, but the post count is a weekly count. If one gets missed over the week, all that needs to happen is that you put in one later to make it up. Timezones, late DM posts, emergencies all come up so they understand that. I had read back through the combat and as far as I saw no one actually missed a round, but the weekly posts are still short. My game has people, some are myself, who won't get a Friday post in if the DM post comes later in the afternoon. So long as that post is in by Sunday we still have all our posts for the week. For example, looking at the grid below you had 5 posts for the Monday through Sunday week, but Johan was still missing 1, and Swindle is missing 2, Trey 1 and the DM 1. One missing post is generally OK so long as it isn't a habit, 2 not so much, especially when there is a pattern. My group is all veterans, we will post about how it is raining upwards if we need to to keep the thread going if the DM misses a day, It happens. That and the fact that I hound them makes us perfect on posts almost every week, but any group can do it. That's why I'm here, Earl was going to be away and needed a fill in so I will keep Crosseye current while he is gone.

Ankheg Innards - Co DM Dan K
Monday September 15th, 2014 9:06:04 AM

Irdalas introduces himself and offers his bow to the party in the future. he then assumes a bit of responsibility and sets the Agents of the Fist standing about to assist in the sticky and smelly task.

Caius' morning prayers still about 6 hours off.

The group goes about taking the advise of the Captain and cut open the now identified Ankhegs. It is unpleasant at best and revolting at worst. The creatures do indeed seem to have a fairly slow digestion systems and the party now knows far more about it than any of them likely ever cared to. The men of the Fist grimace choke a bit as they help. As Ankheg ichor sits, it breaks down into a semi sticky substance smelling favorably to beef left in the sun for several days under a bowl. There is no good way to keep it off everything as you continue. The hour or so of horrid work does pay off. The party finds several crystal vials, 5 in all, in the remains of a leather satchel, a silver ring, a steel ring set with a piece of onyx and a silver broach with a piece of jade.

traditionally i have put prayer time for spells in the morning. A cleric has to pray at the same time each day for spells for that day. Spells cast within 8 hours of this prayer time count against what they can pray for.
We have a pretty big Time zone jump for some folks in our game. I will be explaining to Jerry and Ken regularly about it :)

We do not officially have an ADM and could use one

Caius, yes you get a bonus spell because of wis and i too suggest you prepare non-cure spell and swap it if need dictates and you also have a domain spell that cannot be swapped

Wand, anyone can use a wand if the spells are on your spell list. standard action to use and does not provoke Attacks of Opportunity

With too much joy, Atlas talks to no one in particular, "Excellent finds friends...when is breakfast?"

With a hearty laugh he walks over to the mage. "That was brave friend, granted, stupid as well, but brave none the less and that is a trait that I can appreciate. Please rest and when you are better I would like to talk to you about your plans after this. We could use someone like you in our group."

After leaving Udhomar Atlas turns to reply to Irdalas. [b]"My apologies for not responding to you earlier, but thank you. Your arrows flew true and that is a skill that could do us all well. I cannot speak for the whole group, but I would like to take you up on your offer. I'll consult with them."

Atlas does his best to gather the rest of the group for a quick conversation. "Quite the battle eh? After the goblins I've been worried about our balance. I thought we might need to hire some help if we are going to travel together and survive. It seems that help has fallen in our laps this evening. What say you? Should we take on these new strangers? They have proven themselves in battle and drink, so I'm in."

After the decision is made on the new comers Atlas heads back to the water where they cleaned up earlier and does his best to wash out his gear. It is late and all he wants to do is go to bed. Once he is cleaned up he heads back to his bed roll, takes off his armor and gets comfortable for the few hours of sleep that remain. If they allow him to, he sleeps in as long as possible.

Covered in bug goo he too goes to wash up after the treasure is found. he then goes to sleep somewhere that the sun will strike him at about 8am to wake him, since they have been invited to breakfast up in the trees. Once he wakes he will gently awaken the others, don his gear and await the lift. While waiting he asks,
" Were either of you casters able to see if any of that gear was magical? Granted crystal and metal and gems are resistant to acids, but I saw what Atlas and our new friend here looked like when they got free of the bugs grasp. It may be slow digestion, but the acid is potent."

DM Dan, Should Caius make a healing check for the time he spent working on Udhomar for Treating Deadly wounds? Granted the DC is 20 to heal only 1 point, but if he makes a 25 DC he will heal 5 points (Level + Wisdom bonus). Might be worth the cost of the 2 uses from the healers kit.

Caius, agreeing with the group, thinks that the newcomers should be invited to join. "Gargul is a welcoming God," he says, before throwing his grey cowl over his head and gliding away. I need rest, he thinks. I need sleep and prayer. It has been too long since I have participated in the slaying of a beast. It was necessary, but...I cannot...I must think on balance and nothing more. For that is Gargul's will." Caius, thoughtful, walks to his bedroll, lays down, and sleeps a troubled sleep.

OOC
Yup, the "official line" is that someone needs to be listed as carrying it. This is for a couple of reasons. Say one of those potions ends up being a cure light wounds potion and we know what it is. Mack says he will carry the treasure since it was in his bug ( or whatever reason). Well the cleric ends up being the next guy flattened by a bug and he is bleeding out. "oh noes" says Crosseye and pulls out that potion he and only he ( brain fart for the rest of the group, lets say) remembers we have that will save him. Problem is, Mack is carrying it. The other reason is reality. Take the goblins you guys faced coming here. Say you kept all the armor and weapons they dropped and it was say 20 goblins. That's probably OK if say Bonivus is carrying it. Not so much if it were Udhomar due to the weight and bulk.
You can divide it now or keep it pooled until you have enough to amount to something, that's up to the group, as far as who is carrying what though you kinda need to list it on your sheets somewhere. I would also suggest getting things like the jewelry looked at by a person who can detect magic, just so you aren't giving away a magic item for cheap.

Morning Tree of Parting - Co DM Dan K
Tuesday September 16th, 2014 2:11:51 PM

The party retires for the evening after getting cleaned up and gathering up what they found. Udhomer, being very tired after his ordeal of almost being eaten, goes to sleep intending to try and identify the vials in the morning.

A quick conversation about the the group and all think that the mage, Udhomer and elf bowman, Irdalas would make for terrific adventuring companions.

The rest of the night and early hours of the morning pass pleasantly and perhaps sooner than some might wish, the rays of the sun spill across the eastern horizon. There is a chill and light fog in the air this morning. Many are still sleeping, a combination of late drinks during the Chancers Ball and the broken sleep during the night. The party can tell that there is some activity in the tree above them at this early hour and two 10x10 platforms are lowering to the ground even now.

On the ground about you, not much is going on, perhaps two sets of merchants are awake and going through their own morning routine

The party has an invitation to Tree Tops Inn as well as a few treasures
5 crystal vials, a silver ring wroth 75gp, a steel ring set with a piece of onyx worth 25gp and a silver broach with a piece of jade worth125gp.

OOC on party Treasure, David has a good summary. someone in the party should be kinda taking charge. email is a great place to hash out party division. Parties i have been in, we divide evenly and if a PC wants an item, he puts cash value back in that gets divided by everyone else. ADM has historically taken that on, but anyone can
On Caius and using the Healers Kit for a Mortal wound treatment on Udhomer, Up to you Caius. In this case retrofitting that roll is not a big deal, but in the future it could be and as fair warning, i'm not a big fan of oh wait I might to do x last post if something bad is now happening where a last round I do post could change things

One more thing about magical treasure ( once you start to find some) My party used to hold it until the end of the module to divide so that we could do it like DM Dan suggested. One thing I will mention is once you strat to upgrade or trade in gear, ask your fellow companions before running off to the catacombs. There you will get 50% value for a sold magic item. If one of your fellow adventurers is about to buy the same item, they will pay full price. This depletes both of your finances. We used to make deals with one another for something more in the middle. The buyer ends up with a little cheaper gear and the seller gets a little more cash. It's just good business. 8)

DM Dan k. We have only had the player put in the pot what the sale value was. Ex +1 cloak sells for 1000 and that is what the player puts in the pot

I wake up, stretch, clean out my eyes, ears, and nose, and head over to the rest of the group. Getting ready to head up, with thoughts of a wonderful breakfast running thru my head. :)

OOC: So, just getting some questions out of the way as to how things work in this world.... when a normal item, say a ring, is worth 75 gp, is that how much we pay to buy it, or how much we get if we sell it, or both? Obviously, in real life, there is mark-up, sometimes bartering, etc., etc. Just wondering how much of that we do here though, in a Woldian world where we have limited time to take turns and keep the game rolling along.

DM dan k. I will always give the value of treasure as what the party gets when they sell. Gear and magic items always come at 50% book. Keeps things simple and moving along. Now if someone takes appraise and diplomacy and such and such. The values will take that into account

Tree Tops Inn - Co DM Dan K
Wednesday September 17th, 2014 5:05:14 PM

The party wakes and cleans up and gathers about the one of the lifts. The lifts themselves, unlike the large one that came down last night, are unmanned. Ropes at each corner secure them with a mid chest high dual rallied fence surrounds it. A small built in gate easily swings open and locks back into place as everyone steps aboard. A second or two pass and then the lift begins climbing into the sky. The platform feels completely steady and you can barely feel it move. Soon enough, the platform comes to stop at a great bough in the tree, nearly 120' up, the branch is almost 15' wide. A man greets you as you step off and directs you towards the trunk and the winding staircase you took the previous evening to get to TreeTops.

You pass only a few merchants at this early hour and see no one that you would consider a guard or watchman. With the great canopy of the tree, the sunlight is very filtered and streams through in very select places. To illuminate a piece of art, or branching of some path, a water fountain or other specific thing. Hooded lanterns hang in many other locations from stout poles attached to the path, or hang from a convenient branch above. None of the lanterns give off any heat.

If the tree looked wondrous in the night it looks even more majestic in the daylight. Its great branches, now so clearly visible twisting and turning about in what seems to be the only way they could so as that the buildings and paths built within could exist. Below about the trunk, the bark appeared to be thick, coarse brown with grey highlighting. Here above, though, the branches are wrapped in a smooth grey with white highlights and slivers of tan.

The trip from exiting the lift to the upper reaches of the tree where Tree Tops sits takes nearly an hour and somewhere around 500, you stopped counting stairs. At last you have reached Tree Tops Inn. The great oaken double doors are open, soft string music is within and the quiet tones of a few guests in private conversation. Across the great room, you spy Captain Garret VonKlempt sitting at a large oval table of some dark, nearly black wood. 5 others are seated with him and a place sits vacant for each of you scattered about the table forcing the group to mingle with those already there. The only chair clearly reserved is an oversized cherry wood seat for Bonivus.

Spying you at about the same time, Garret half stands to clearly get your attention and waves you over.

That link and spreadsheet is an excellent idea. You have a variety of merchants here I would unload all of that goblin gear and make it gold so it is easier to keep track of. Also I was able to open the sheet and edit, so it seems anyone with the link can do it. (that link isn't quite right to show up as a hyperlink, but I am very bad at doing that so I can't tell you where it is wrong. If you highlight all but the ( ) at the start and end and right click it it will give you the options to open it)
Earl should be back today, I think, so he will be taking over for Crosseye again. Thanks for having me and putting up with my chattiness. Take care.

My name is Caius Graycloak. I am a cleric of Gargul, the god of life and death, the god of balance." As Caius talks, his eyes begin to faintly glow and thin trails of smoke waft from beneath his cloak. Ah, too much, too much, he thinks. Some are not ready for a divine presence in their midst. Caius, finishing his introduction, bows to Captain VonKlempt and says, "I thank you for your hospitality. After speaking, Caius moves to an open seat and waits behind it for the appropriate time to sit down.

Atlas beams at the site of the inn, smell of the food, and sound of music. Inns are a place of gathering, of sharing stories, dancing, and laughter. They have always held a place in his heart. This inn however is quite a bit more classy than what he is used to. Never one to be shy, he makes it his home the moment he strides in.

Atlas strolls through the great room towards the table, looking around to see who else is here, where the kitchen is, who the staff is, and where the exits are. As he approaches the table he heads straight to the Captain and grasps the man's forearm in greeting. His smile goes from ear to ear as he says, "Captain, a wonderful morning to you! Thank you for your hospitality and this chance to dine with you."

He looks around at the others and smiles a greeting to them, then nods towards the chair next to the Captain in a way that asks if the chair was available for him to sit in.

Udhomar, under House Rules, Technical Issues, is a list of how to make your text react on the page.

The basics go like this
Use the [ ] keys to frame the character you want to make the effect. These brackets are just above and slightly right of the enter key on your keyboard.
Use i for italics
Use b for bold
use u for underlining
The format is open bracket character close bracket at the beginning of the text you want to change and open bracket backslash character close bracket at the end of the text you want to change . I'll make an example, using ( ) to show this below. Using ( ) instead of the [ ] won't make it disappear and change the text. That way you can see the formatting.
(b) make this bold (/b) would make the text inside bold
There are other things you can do with the text listed on that page. Generally they don't get used much, so read thru them and get an feel for them, but you won't use them very much.

Tree Tops Inn - Co DM Dan K
Thursday September 18th, 2014 4:25:29 PM

Garret smiles and shakes hands, "The pleasure is mine this morning." The party crosses the room and sits with those already there. Irdalas sees nothing to give him any pause. In fact there are only 2 other tables with anyone at them at this hour. At one table is a two men and a touch of familiarity crosses the elfs mind, but he cannot place it. Across the room is another where 4 servers are laying out silverware in napkins, preparing for more guests later.

Garret remains standing a moment and holds up his hands to stave off questions, "In due time, first I would like to introduce our most gracious host, Ciyradyl Ilyndrathyl" He indicates a male elf seated to Caius' right. "He operates and maintains Tree Tops Inn"

"It is also my honor," Indicating the elf that came down the lift last night, "To officially introduce you to Folbre Ilyndrathyl, on his cousins right. Rounding out the table is Laughingwater and Saide Silvergraft." The last two are humans, Laughingwater a male and Saide a woman, though it does appear that she may have some elven blood in her family tree.

Breakfast is served, poached eggs, toasted grain bread with butter and jam, an assortment of fruits, milk and pear juice. Conversations strike up about the table.

Garret answers Irdalas, "I don't have an armory here. The Fist is only here because we are seeing the wagons through to Emerald City. We leave tomorrow morning." He reaches under his chair and produces a small pouch for each of you. "Reminds me, your duty pay plus a bonus."

Each PC receives 200gp

Folbre speaks up as well, "We have a fletcher, a general store and other such things. I act as the overall manager of all aspects here. I understand you have arms and equipment you wish to sell and I will see to that. I believe you will find our stores well stocked with a variety of gear for all sizes."

Midway through Breakfast, Laughingwater addresses the table, "Good sirs and ladies," he begins. I would like to extend the offer of residency to this fine group. Emerald City no longer will be supporting us and we need to evolve and I believe they have shown the courage and faith that would be required of adventurers in residence. Do I have a second?"

Ciyradyl, Saide and Folbre all raise their glasses. "Unanimous then." smiles Laughingwater and he then turns as they all do to you, "What say you?"

If you ask me to settle down in one place just as I have started my personal quest, there has to be more into it than just the honor of being here.
Furthermore, " he says as he turn to the rest of the group. "I was of the understanding that you adventurers had an agreement with Captain Garret VonKlempt here to get his caravan safely to Emerald city. Is this to be abandoned? I'm curious of the Captain's opinion on this." Iradalas says as he glances towards the Captain to see his reaction. (OOC: Perception check of 16)

Atlas is enjoying his breakfast and the conversation when Laughingwater starts his speech. His usually jovial expression takes a turn for the serious when he hears the words and sees the results of the vote. Hearing Bonivus quickly respond with a hint of surprise on his voice just strengthened Atlas' concern with this situation.

While Atlas is looking at Bonivus he hears Caius respond as well. His face grows visibly concerned. He looks over at Laughingwater and after a moment of studying the man, he speaks...

[b]"Laughingwater, this is a very generous offer. I will admit that I did not expect such a privilege to be bestowed upon us this day. However, this role of Adventurers in Residence is new to me, so before I accept such a generous offer I would first like to understand what it would entail. It sounds like the Tree is undergoing change and this offer is in support of that, but what exactly do you expect of us and what do we get in return?"[b]

OOC: Party Treasure.... I'm definitely in agreement with doing what's best for the party first. And it makes sense to me that when we trade up, we see if someone else can better use our old stuff before parting with it. I guess at that point, it's our item, so it'd probably be up to us what we want to do with it. Maybe give it to someone, or even sell it back to party treasure to see who wants it?

Laughingwater smiles at Bonivus but it quickly evaporates under the withering fire of questions as it looks as if he begins thinking of the party in a very different light. His face sets a bit and becomes unreadable. Irdalas, does see his eyes dart to glance at either Crosseye or Saide, both sit just across the table form him Irdalas can glean no other information.

The Captain of the Fist, Commander Garret VonKlempt simply sits back in his chair surrendering any position he has on the future conversation

Folbre, however is quick to speak and maintains his outward friendliness at the table. "Good sirs I think I might be able to clear some of the air here." He pours himself another glass of pear juice. First, The Tree of Parting has very few long term residents. We play host and hospice to the those the Wold over who come here to learn, study, wonder or stop on their way to somewhere else, such as the broken lands of Izen, the Red Hills or Culverwood. And of course as one of the only safe refuges on the East West trade route between Emerald City and Plateau City we see are fair amount of travelers. Parnoth the tyrant, ruler of Emerald City found value in this location and used it to his own ends in ways I am not privy too. but because of such things, he spent a considerable amount of magic and gold to make this place what you see today and to assure its relative safety."

"Parnoth is dead, put to a villianous end by the Emerald Dragons, heroes of legend. While millions are now safer and better off, We will not be seeing an unlimited supply of gold in the future. Adventurers can change that. You bring in caches of wealth, as you have already done. Adventurer heroes also garner the attention of the Catacombs and a location of that particular magical outlet would be a great boon to us especially now."

He pauses to let what he has said sink in for a moment, "So that is what we get out of it as they say. What you receive is safe haven on the doorstep of three of the most sought after places by adventurers and heroes, The Red Hills, Izen and Culverwood. Striking distance, if you will, from the very lands that gave the Wold the greatest heroes who ever lived. A more central location from which to see the Wold i cannot imagine. Commander VonKlempt has already seceded his position." Folbre looks to Garret who nods and simply raises his glass as a toast in return.

"If the Tree were to become imperiled, I suppose we would expect to be able to call upon you to defend it. The attack last night would not have sent out such a call. The Tree of Parting has not been so imperiled in over 100 years and I currently see no evidence of that changing."

"Do you have other concerns?"

Sunday September 21st, 2014 11:57:18 PM

Atlas mulls over the speech given by Folbre before speaking. When he does he leans forward and with a thoughtful look on his face, he begins to respond, [b]"I will admit that this arrangement could be beneficial to both of us. By the Captain's demeanor, he seems to be OK with it as well. If all goes well I can see this as being a perfect arrangement.

"However, what happens when everything is not going well? What happens if we don't find magical items of great wealth, or piles of gold? What happens if one of us tires and wants to go home, or the whole bunch of us get our egos inflated and we think that we're not being treated fairly for just killing the...I don't know, the worst daemon this side of the Wold and in doing so we save the Tree?

"If life has taught me one thing, it is that arrangements always work when going to plan, and always fall apart when something unplanned happens.

"To that end, what are the conditions, the safety nets for both of us? I'm not looking for you to tell me that we need to bring in 500gp per week or we are out. I'm looking for you to tell me that if our agreement is disappointing one of us then we both have a safe way out. For instance, if we're not accomplishing the goal then you give us 1000gp each and ask us to leave the Tree within the week. Conversely, if we feel that you're asking for too much and we're not willing to risk our necks for the Tree any longer then we'll help you find the next group of worthy adventurers before we move on.

"Those are just examples, right now I'm wondering if you have thought about this already and have a plan, or if this is new and we need to start from scratch to figure it out?"

Atlas sits back in his chair, takes a swig of his drink and waits for everyone else to chime in.

[i]Though that would be against the whole purpose of this, wouldn't it Laughingwater.
Irdalas thinks to himself.

"In any case, when all questions are answered we should discuss this internally in private, no rash decision has to be made here. Like you said, the Tree will be here for a long time."

Caius nods to Atlas. It is Gargul's will that I follow and aid where I can. If here and now, then so be it.

Atlas voices concerns and asks about the termination of the agreement should things not be going well. The others try their best to gauge the reactions of the Laughingwater and the rest at the table as he does so. Bonivus restates his acceptance of the offer, eliciting a nod from Saide and Ciyradyl.

The reactions or motivations behind any of the faces about the table are precisely what they appear to be, friendly and genuine.

Folbre, smile never wavering, nor does his warm gaze, as he looks from Atlas to Bonivus to Caius, to Crosseye to Mack and Udhomer and lastly to his fellow elf Irdalas. Just as it looks as if he is going to reply, Garret VonKlempt leans back in, the scowl on his face is easy enough to read and his next words make it even more abundantly plain.

"You're all being bloody fools. All except the taur there at least." he waves a hand in Bonivus' direction. "You're offered residence at the Tree of Parting, Wonder of Wold with the expectation that you will be doing what you want to be doing in the first place and you're burying your heads in minutia. Life has taught you? Son," Garret's scowl breaks into a smile at this point. "You're not old enough to have been taught much of anything by life. You want life lessons? I strongly suggest you smile, nod your heads and accept." Garret leans back again and with his smile diminishing he shakes his head a bit.

Folbre, make a calming motion towards Garret, "They mean no offence commander and thus none is taken." Garret nods his understanding in reply.

Folbre then turns his attention back to the group as a whole. "Friends," he begins, "There may be a misunderstanding. This is an offer, not an agreement or contract or other such thing. Your'e actions on the road and of last night brought your gifts, qualities, heart and honor to our attention. There is no minimum amount to pay, no dues, rent, or other such things. It is an offer to take residence within the Tree. If at some future point you have strayed from path of good, you shall be invited to leave."

Folbre touches his slender elf fingertips together in front of himself, much like someone might fold their hands. "Trying to bind free creatures with more than their honor and love and predict future courses ends in failure. That is what life has taught me."

Ciyradyl smiles and nods to Folbre, "You asked to be given moments in private to converse and of course we shall respect your wishes." She raises her left hand briefly and one of the serving men standing nearby quickly comes over. "Thank you Maltius, please allow them access to the west wing suite on the second floor."

With that, the man Maltius, steps over and gives a nod, "If you will follow me m'lords."

Maltius leads the group across the room and up a side flight of stairs and down a hall. The walls are open, granting more pristine views of the beauty of the Tree. The covered walk has several other paths that lead to other rooms situated about. Looking to only be accessible by the walkway or, of course magic. At the end of the walkway, about 250' from the main room, is a short 8 steps to a beautiful cherry wood door highlighted with red and gold trim. Maltius walks up and kisses an engraved circle and then opens the door.. After the party enters, he closes it.

The suite consists of 3 rooms and a wash room. 2 sleeping rooms with 2 large beds each, separated by a communal room of about 300 square feet. The suite is pleasantly furnished, but not extravagently so, a fire place is located in each room and a pair of filled water pitchers with glasses sits on a small table backed by chairs and a couch. A third large sized chair is just to the side by a window looking out to the west.

I fill up a glass of water, and go sit down on the large chair and take a look out the window. I play around with the steel ring with onyx a little, seeing if it has any interesting writing or designs on it. Eventually, I try it on.

Watching Atlas during the walk would notice that Atlas is smiling and lost in thought. However, upon entering the room he doesn't wait to start. As Mack pours his water Atlas speaks, "Well, he has a very good point. I didn't really know what was after this, but my gut tells me that this offer is better than anything we could find in Emerald City. I'm open to hearing your thoughts, and I'm glad that we got to take this beautiful walk, but I was sold after the Captain laid it out in plain language."

Irdalas nods. "I agree Sir Atlas, I'm glad we pushed with our questions. I feel 100% comfortable accepting now. You have my vote."

"And mine! Says Udhomar.
"By the way, I finished examining these vials. The Shield of Faith and Bear's Endurance sound like Atlas should hold on to these just in case? I can also start working on identifying the other items, I know the spell Detect Magic"
Udhomar eyes the ring Mack is playing around with.

Bonivus smiles broadly when he sees the big chair and goes to one of the wall openings to take in the view.

When he hears his companions acceptance he thinks to himself, <i>about time they saw sense.</i>

Caius follows his colleagues into their quarters and then shuffles into the washroom. He washes his neck, face, and hands while listening to the conversation. Once done, he stands in front of the fireplace and watches as the red flames lick the bright wood. The Tree of Parting, he thinks. So many memories. So much pain. 'Gargul, if possible, then transform my harsh remembrances into something beautiful.' Caius, without turning, speaks into the fire, "Yes. The Tree of Parting has my trust. With you, I will join the Culverwoodians."

I follow every up to the suite. Take in all the wonder of the room. Never have see so much and so big my old house with my grandfather could fit in here. I walk over to a window look out over the tree of parting. " Such a wonder I would love to make this home for now! I say we stay and make this home base it has all we could ever want and need." I say to the group all the still look out.

"And Detecting Magic on our finds sounds like a wonderful idea as well, Ud."

Bonivus nods in agreement with Crosseye.

"I doubt the jewelry and such is magical. But it never hurts to check. All the equipment the goblins were using seems mundane enough to me. But again it never hurts."

"I am in need of some supplies, mostly healing kits and would like to see what other things the shops might have to offer." I say to the group all the time wondering what wonders I might find.
