The party has arrived in a hot dry valley. Tall grasses grow all around -- none red. The wind licks the moisture off you.

Only two of you respond to the voice you all hear.

Dušan says, “To what do we owe the honor?”

Ethani asks, "Why have you brought us here?"

No one enters the lodge. Toston sees an odd sight -- almost like a glimpse of invisible ghosts of other heroes entering the lodge!

The mental voice chuckles and welcomes you again. "Please, come in! Enter!"

"You owe me no honor, though I hope that once you meet me you will come to offer it freely. All will be explained. Please come in and sit around my council fire.

Do you enter, and if not, then what do you do instead? If you do go in, what is your "marching order" as you enter?

Gaffer's excitement from seeing different lost and legendary things that he never thought he would lingers as they touch the ground.
At first he hesitates to respond to the voice but soon his natural curiosity gets the better of him. "Well, we did come this far" he says to the others, and slowly heads inside.

Tostons says, "I think I saw some ghosts or maybe other heroes entering the cottage. I don't think it's a trap but I'll take point entering the cabin as my body is a weapon and I have spells just in case."

Lornak eases up a bit when he hears the voice asking them to enter and sees glimmers of other heroes. He looks forward into the chamber before him. Taking Ethani's hand he says; "Indeed." with a light heart. Hand in hand they enter following Wil and Toston.

You enter the lodge. Sitting inside is a strange sort of fellow. He has dark skin and white hair, and he is smaller than a halfling. He is dressed in simple leathers, and he is sitting cross legged and looking into a firepit.

However, the inside of the lodge is like an extradimensional space! Instead of grass walls, the walls on the inside of this refuge look like smoky mirrorsor magical walls of fog.

What's more, in the fog you see shadows of other groups of people, dressed as adventurers like yourselves. One group is definitely the Iron Dragons, some of whom you have met. Another group is just halflings. Another has a range of taurs. The elder fellow sitting at the fire seems to be addressing all of them at once, somehow, with his mental speech.

This shifting “veil of time and place” ebbs and flows through a repeating scene of memory that plays over and over again. In this way you know that other groups are there but can’t communicate with them. Do you see some that you know?

"I am Mahyawu of the Manfri," your host projects into your minds. On a closer look, you see he is wearing an outfit made from a combination of hide, grass, beads and feathers. His boots are made from beast hide and his leggings are made by an intricate weaving of grass and a lighter beast hide. His vest is also made of some sort of leather that is the same type of hide used in leggings but adorned with various beads made from stone, glass and even steelgrass and pottery. His headdress is large for his small frame, and made from woven grass with rows of feathers traversing down his back. He is old.

Mahyawu's mental voice speaks with a soft echo identical to the one encouraging you to step into the vortex. He speaks not only with his soft mental voice but with animated hand gestures as well.

You see this because he has much wisdom to impart.

You are shown a “vision” of the Sargrass Plains, with a mountain range, like a spine, running down the middle. These are the exploding Crystal Mountains. You see the Bloodweed growing beneath the Crystal Mountains, causing vibrations that eventually cause the mountains to explode. You see the explosion and the resulting meteors.
You see the Bloodweed grow quickly, enveloping and covering all parts of the Wold, spreading out from wherever a meteor falls. Even great cities are covered in the weed. The animals and people either succumbed to the disease or die. Mahyawu explains that the Manfri prophesy of “All is grass” will be fulfilled before its time. Life as the Wold knows it will be changed.

"I have called you all here to work with all the heroes of the Wold to stop this menace. There will be danger. Some will die. Will you accept this quest? If you agree, I will help you."

In the fog, it looks like a couple groups have already agreed to help out!

Toston looks through the smoke and he thinks he recognizes Pru, Anna and Sigvar from when he met them at Yule in one of the mirrors.

Lornak listens to the feyking* and looks around into the various foggy mirrors. As his companions volunteer to potentially die for the Wold, memories of Ashira's warnings to him flash through his mind. Lornak feels a shiver creep up his spine. He is grateful to know why and how the sky fell, but it gives him no consolation. He squeezes Ethani's hand and furrows his brow. He looks into her eyes. "We have little choice, do we not?"

"That's Bralin Stoneminder!" he gushes. "Our valley's Sheriff! I thought he was dead."
The teen is downright starry-eyed.

Mahyawu's mind speak and light show sober him up considerably.

"So, if we don't accept the quest, pretty much everybody dies, right?"

"I'm in."

Feeling very unsure, Ethani grabs Lornak's hand and squeezes tight. She pulls him in closer and whispers in her ear. "I doubt think Mom was really serious about hunting you down. But she is insane so...."

Straightening herself, she nods. "The Wold needs us. We must help. "

In the fog, as each group agrees, a symbol forms near them. Near you, the symbol that forms is a pair of crescent moons. “I believe this to be you," says Mahyawu. "The Heroes of Dirt City.”

In the smoke you can see a circle of nine symbols. Dragon. Valley. Ship. Child. Soldier. Tree. Moons. Gem. Bridge. Lines go from each and connect at a point in the center.

The old manfri explains that the Sargrass is now in the Valleys of Twilight. The first part of your quest is to anchor the Sargrass back into the Wold, and in so doing to tame the bloodgrass. "To do that, each group must find a holy anchor. As heroes of Dirt City, you must obtain a stone from the Crystal Mountains. Be careful! It will shatter if it is near a loud noise! Silence and quiet are your allies in carrying it."

"Go out into the Sargrass. Find the stone anchor. Then play this instrument."

He hands you a horn woven of steelgrass and a book.

"Then use this book to perform the ceremony of anchoring. Only then may you go home and use your anchor to cleanse your own land."

You see a vision in the smoke: you see the crystal meteor you first found in the crater, with bloodweed spreading out from it reaching toward Dirt City. When you bring the Crystal Mountain stone to it, then touch it to the meteor, it breaks the crystal meteor and kills off the Bloodweed.

"Ask any questions you might have now."

"Questions!?! Where to begin?" Dušan wonders as he pulls out his field manual, "Are their many bridges between our planes? How many creatures are hear? How many are hostile? Can we reach the other planes from the Valley? Can one see the other planes from the Valley? Are the planes flat? Does the Valley grow as more inhabitants migrate or are the planes infinite? Can on travel across the Valley as one would in our plane?"

Dušan begins to feel eyes turn on him and realizes that he was rambling, "Oh sorry you probably mean about the quest. Could we rest here before our journey? We've been in a few scuffles and could use some time to rest and recoup. And to that effect do you know any remedies to the crimson disease. I've tried magic to no effect so far, but I believe with enough patience I might be able to cure it."

Gaffer feels very nervous about the importance of their undertaking. He is sure there are questions he should ask but he is new to this and not sure where to start. Most of all though, he asks, "I don't know if I missed something. But why had this happened early?" His voice quiet and soft.

"If the anchor's create a spoke and that spoke will reverse this plague, what happens if a rung is missing?"

Dušan has questions!

"Are their many bridges between our planes?" Not bridges, no. Say rather that the barriers between planes are weak. The veils are thin, and one can push through more easily than before. Has the bloodgrass weakened the walls? Or was the bloodgrass created to take advantage of the weakness? I do not know.

This also answers Gaffer's question about the timing. Maybe the bloodgrass explosion was timed to take advantage of a time in which the borders between planes was porous. But the elder manfri says he is just guessing, and does not really know.

"How many creatures are here?" The cataclysm that thrust the Sargrass Plains out of the Wold was vast, and the Sarr in her mercy opened gateways so that the inhabitants of the Plains could escape before the end. There was a great exodus, and most peoples of the plains left. But many stayed, and the dumb beasts and rooted flora remained. Many plants and animals and people died in the cataclysm, but when Queen Maab saved what was left and brought the Plains to her Valleys of Twilight, there were still many people, plants, and creatures brought along. They still are out there.

"How many are hostile?" Some will be friends, some enemies, some neither, as you would expect.

"Can we reach the other planes from the Valley?" The usual methods of planar travel will work.

"Can one see the other planes from the Valley? Are the planes flat? Does the Valley grow as more inhabitants migrate or are the planes infinite?" These are mysteries beyond my ken.

"Can one travel across the Valley as one would in our plane?" Yes, as you seek the holy anchor object, it will be as if you were in the Plains as they were in the Wold. The Silver Lady preserves things as they were. Except that the Bloodweed has spread in many places. And a few other clues will inform you that you are not in the Wold. But you can walk the Sargrass-in-the-Valley as you would the Sargrass-in-the-Wold-that-was.

"Could we rest here before our journey?" You may not rest in or near this lodge, for it is a magical place that would offer you no respite. But you may rest in the Plains, for likely it will take you some days to find the anchor. I will place you as close as I can, but you will have some searching to do. You may rest before you start your search.

"Do you know any remedies to the crimson disease."Those who are infected, approach for my blessing. I can DELAY the effect. If you triumph, you will cure yourselves. If you fail, then your infection will be the least of your worries.

Lornak asks what if some group fails but the others win through. I do not know, youngster, and I hope we will not have the occasion to find out.

Mahyawu allows those who need it to approach for his blessing. The feeling of relief is immediate.

"Do not forget to use the horn when you obtain the stone from the Crystal Mountains! Remember that if may explode if you are too loud! After you use the horn, the book will let you join with others to perform the ceremony!"

Mahyawu plucks a single green feather from his headdress, places it on his open palm and blows it into the firepit. As the feather burns it creates a swirling cloud of smoke. For a moment, the smoke fills the lodge, and you see nothing.

When the smoke clears, you are standing in the Sargrass Plains, in a small clearing beyond which grasses rise, ten feet tall. The lodge is nowhere to be seen. It is hot. So hot. And you are thirsty.

Dušan scribbles furiously in his field manual as his questions are surprisingly answered. "Thank you for you hospitality..." Dušan begins, but finds he is no longer inside the lodge. Feeling parched he casts create water and offers his friends a respite.

Hmerrin eagerly queues up to receive the old fellow's blessing, and is relieved that his infection feels better.

And then, they're in, well, the Sargrass is what Mahyawu said.

Taking the offered water from Dusan, he drinks his fill while looking about.
"So, somewhere around here is a stone from the Cystal mountains that will shatter if we make any loud noises, and as soon as we find it, we're supposed to blow a horn....
That was well thought out."

"Any one got any idea where to go?"
He glance at Ethani.
"Or do we need to hunker down and recover spells first?"

Asteria is grateful for the blessing and the absent urge to eat her friends, but she is even more glad that they finally stopped talking. Enough talking! Let's get to smashing!

Annnd, of course, it's hot. In this armor, she feels like she's going to pass out. And it does nothing to help with her fatigue from the earlier battle. Sighing as the initial adrenalin leaves her body, she sits down and tries to hide in the shade of her fellow companions. "Can we find somewhere to sleep? Those badgers took a lot out of me and I need a nap."

OOC: I forgot to put that after she fell out of her rage, Asteria became fatigued. I believe that condition still holds, unless I am mistaken. Sorry about that!

Toston says to his friends, "We should have asked him to help treat our diseases. Unless I'm mistaken many of us caught whatever those creatures had and we will end up like them considering all our attempts at curing it thus far were for naught. Though I guess we can do this one final heroic deed before we turn into rabid animals like those things. I don't suppose anyone has a silence spell? It will probably come in handy once we attain the stone."

Ethani sighs in relief as her companions are healed. One less thing to worry about.

Overwhelmed by the sudden heat, Ethani greedily guzzles the water offered her by Dusan and agrees with Hmerrin and Asteria. "I do not know where we are, but if it were my call, I would find someplace we can shelter in and recooperate spells. Though...I do worry that given the heat out here we may find that most of the predators come out at night." Ethani looks over at Lornak. "What say you My Love? Rest and recuperate or press on?"

Ethani gently fans herself from the heat more than worried that heat exhaustion may become an issue sooner rather than later.

"Thank heavens, Mahyawu is able to give us some relief." Wil falls upon the ground as the heat just sapped the energy from him.
"I am exhausted."
"Your exhausted. What about me," Cicero begins. "I've been trying to get a hold of you for a millennia."
Wil sighs.
He then stands, and thanks Dusan for the water. He then scans the area

"My thanks." Lornak says, receiving the blessing with a nod of his head. Before he has a chance to ask how to cut down the bloodweed(because it seemed indestructible) he finds himself in a desert of all places.

The beating sun irritates his light sensitive eyes. He immediately pulls his hood up over his head to cover them.

"The only way to cure this disease is to anchor the Sargrass." He says to Toston. "Before that we do need to rest." He takes the water offered from Dusan gratefully. "Thank you my friend. If anyone has a waterskin or anything that can store this for later, please do so now. It may be cumbersome, but it is necessary." He gulps his last mouthful and fills his waterskin.

From under his hood his blue eyes scan the terrain (Knowledge Nature d20=23) "Our best bet is to find shade from a large stone outcropping. If we cannot find that, then it will have to be bushes." He says. "Either way, mind the floor underneath, there will most certainly be snakes and scorpions."

If/when they find a place - Lornak gets ready to rest. "Set a watch. I'll take the evening."

"I'm not prepared for a desert excursion." He admits to Ethani. "But at least I have my bedroll." He rolls it out and lays down. He then offers the space beside him for her to curl up next to him such as it is.

As fresh heat washes over him Gaffer wipes his brow and hurries to cast create water himself. After a long drink he helps fill their water skins.

"I think rest is definitely in order. Even if most the predators here come out at night it is better to face them now than a day later. " He takes in their surroundings, trying to judge where they might be and where they could rest for a night. (Survival: 22)

After a pause he tries to turn to the others and asks, "So errm, have you all ever done something on this scale before? I know I agreed to help but this feels beyond me. I, I'm not trying to, to back out or anything. I just haven't even left the circle for very long."

"This is only my second time outside of the city," Dušan responds to Gaffer while filling skins, "The first time I was nearly poisoned by goblins and enchanted by harpies. So, no, not the same scale, but I'm beginning to think I should stay closer to civilization."

In this parched grasslands, Hmerrin, Ethani, Wil, and Lornak are grateful for the water created by Dušan.

Gaffer creates his own water!

But that's only a few gallons, right? What happens when that water runs out? Oh what? You can just create more? Well, that's one thing you will not have to worry about, deduces Toston.

Just protect those casters!

Asteria needs to rest, and honestly, do you want to be travelling under the noonday sun? Gaffer agrees, and Lornak unfurls his bedroll.

Hmerrin takes first watch, remaining alert. Lornak volunteers for second watch. Anyone else?

Hmerrin makes a funny: "So, somewhere around here is a stone from the Crystal Mountains that will shatter if we make any loud noises, and as soon as we find it, we're supposed to blow a horn ..." [OOC: LOL! Hmerrin, please accept 200 xp for seeing to the heart of your challenge!]

The afternoon passes slowly into evening. The manfri seems to have picked a safe place for you, and the day dawns regardless of watches. That may not be the case tomorrow! The sun rises and

Lornak wakes and slowly peels himself away from the bedroll to take the evening watch. He listens to the sounds of the desert with pleasure. The time spent is greatly rejuvenating for him. Siting in the silence, connecting to his surroundings... He realizes he has not been on a proper adventure into nature for a long long while. His mind wanders. (Knowledge: Nature d20=21) The night presses on longer than he expects but he revels at the sunrise nonetheless.

"Does anyone know their geography...?" He asks the group. "...are the days shorter here?"

Dušan offers to take first or last watch. Broken sleep breaks his spell restoration, or so he claims. After some much needed rest and restoration, Dušan moves away from the group to recharge his magical his magical energies from the Wold's Blood d20+12 vs 14 = 24 miss clicked die roller).

Being so far from from his coven, Dušan forgoes any rituals and realizes just how far out of his comfort zone he is (Intelligence d20+5=7). He tries to make up for this by casting Detect Magic to keep an eye out for any unusual auras and trusts to his more naturally inclined friends. "I'll follow any trails you can pick out, I'm not seeing much of anything. At least I'm not hindered anymore by judgement from yesterdays rituals."

After curling up for a peacefully if slightly hot night curled up against Lornak, Ethani rises and stretches before devoting herself tho her morning prayers.

Spending several in-depth minutes praying for the right spells for the day, Ethani takes her place beside Lornak, ready to find the Anchor.

After a long night, you wake to find that this is definitely not home.

For one thing, casters realize that they are on the outer planes. Ethani's connection to Alemi seems so much closer. In fact, divine casters find that their cure and inflict spells are more potent. [OOC: Reroll 1s AND 2s]

Also, being in the outer planes, you cannot summon elemental or fey creatures at all. But you can summon outer planar creatures more easily -- casting time just one standard action -- and such creatures gain an extra hit point per die.

For bloodwitches, the morning ritual is ... off, as Dušan discovers. Back home, the flow of Woldsblood brings unborn souls to the Wold and dead spirits away. Here, the unborn are departing and the spirits are arriving! The flows are reversed!

There is a -2 circumstance penalty to draw on Woldsblood (did not matter for Dušan's roll today) and he gains one extra arcane spell slot at level one.

The grasses grow tall, and there is no seeing over them. So how will you see any mountains or other features, when you cannot see out of the clearing? Once you start moving through the grass, you will be able to see about five ft ahead so long as you are walking.

Feeling better than she ever has, Ethani tries to pick spells that will guide her party toward the Anchor and keep them safe. As she begins the morning, she casts Endure Elements on herself and three other Tide members...not quite having enough for the whole party. She then makes sure to cast Status on Lornak, Toston, Hmerrin, Wilford, Gaffer, and Asteria so that she can makes sure she doesn’t lose them in the grass. She recommends that Dusan stick close to own of the others so that she doesn’t lose him.

Borrow a small amount of rope from another party member, she then tears off a small amount of brightly colored fabric and ties it to the top of her longspear and then lashes the longspear upright to her backpack so that it stick up above the grass. Then she reaches out to attempt to Locate the Anchor by casting Locate Object and focusing on the image that she saw in the vision. Advising everyone to follow her, she heads out, following the direction that she determines from the Locate Object spell.

Lornak is both literally and figuratively out of his element. He does his best to analyze how the sound works in this plane. If the group goes into grass he wants to trust senses other than just sight. (Perception d20=15)

Asteria lifts Toston as high as she can, and he gets a glimpse of mountains in THAT direction.

Gaffer changes shape to fly -- and something very odd happens ... the shape he assumes id blood red, the exact shade of the bloodgrass. Otherwise he is fine, and he sees the mountains in the distance too.

Ethani casts Locate Object, and her perception changes! She can sense a globe almost a quarter mile in diameter. Within that globe she senses dry earth and living grass, deep bedrock under the soil, with a thin aquifer atop the bedrock, hundreds of feet underfoot. What she does not sense is the facet of the singing mountains that you seek. For the seven minute duration, Ethani does not sense the stone she seeks.

Back on the ground, Toston looks at grasses. Grass as far as the eye can see -- most of the grass here is bloodweed. Aside from the large majority red blood grass infected, every now and then you’ll see an odd patch of yellow or purple or orange holding out. These other, scarcer grasses are multicolored, not green, and very tall, averaging 10-15’.

The group gets ready to set out. Lornak secures everyone with a line. Hmerrin at the rear, the group sets out, toward the mountains, right? Dušan casts Detect Magic, and although he does not find any magic, he does smell something funny. It gets slightly stronger as the group heads toward the mountains.

Wil just gawks.

The air is very dry; barely a drop of moisture can be found anywhere. You can feel your lips start to chap almost immediately as you walk. What is your water solution?

It is amazingly hard to walk through the Sargrass. When the grass is thick, you are slowed by half. You could go faster, but the sharp grass blades will cut you.

The grass in the plains is so thick that it is practically like an entangle spell enhanced by plant growth with spikes. Each person must make a reflex save vs DC22 or travel at half speed, or quarter speed through thick growth. A new save is allowed every 10 minutes of travel, but your DM assumes that at least one will fail every time, so you move at something between half and quarter speed all the time.

"Of course, let's press on. We can't just sit here and gawk," Wil said realizing that's just what he was doing.
Wil has new spells and a new sense of purpose. "I guess staring into nothing has some advantage. Umm.. I can fly but only for a minute. If we get lost or need better perception. With that Wil pushed forward knocking the tall grass down and stomping it down for the others.
"Do we have some armor or something flat to push this grass down and keep it down. Maybe we could strap something to our feet?"

The trudge through the grass reminds Lornak of a jungle he once traveled through, only this time the air is not laced with moisture. He sips his waterskin at intervals parallel to their pace replacing the salty sweat that leaks from his pores. "Thank the Gods for you Dusan, we would be in dire straights on this march." He says.

Lornak muses about the results the group is getting from reconnaissance in this plane; "It is as though we experience things through a membrane. We are not native to this plane so perhaps we should not be using native means to track things here?" He stows his waterskin.

He is intrigued by how the Tide's efforts are skewed and uses his perception to try to discern how they are being warped, starting with what Dusan supposedly smells. (Perception d20=28, Nat 20. Confirmation d20=20)

"Wil, is it possible to get direct answers from the spirits about this plane instead of through the veil they usually speak to us in the Wold?"

Dusan, try something that would normally be restricted in the wold Plane?"

Ethani my love, perhaps you have found the spot upon which the crystal must be anchored and not the crystal itself...?"

Wilford suggests making their way forward through the grass, slowly, making a path.

Toston looks for a faster method, but skill checks will not take the place of ideas, here, alas. His detect magic feel funny, and he detects ... the faintest trace of magic, of no school, in the very air.

Dušan continues create water, which is fine, though pink-tinged. His efforts to make skins with prestidigitation result in woven baskets, fragile and weak, and not capable of holding water. He asks if anyone else smells something.

Lornak is grateful for created water. Truly, without it you would be in trouble. He percieves the same smell.

Those who are shielded by Ethani's Endure Elements spells are fine. The others, well ... we'll see as the day progresses.

Ethani, considers that her Locate spell is very short-lived, and the Sargrass is very wide indeed. Is she SURE she wants to use it now?

Hmerrin also struggles to imagine a better way to pass the grass. But really, Wil's slow-but sure method of trampling is the best way you have come up with to move slowly but safely.

Asteria realizes that they are not in the Wold any more, for sure.

Gaffer flies low, keeping his eyes open. He does not evolve further. He directs the party around the thickest sets of grasses.

You see several kinds of grasses as you travel: You see a thick leafed species growing up to 4 to 12 feet high, in shades of red, blue, and purple; You see a thin bladed green grass with razor sharp edges; You see something very much like sunflower plants, on tall strong thick stems. And others.

You find some old bones on the ground with deep grooves in them.

You hear sounds in the wind, as you make your slow way toward the mountains.

Lornak's alarm bells go off when he sees the loose bone in their path. He bends down onto his haunches and lifts one up and examines it. He points to the grooves carved out. "That can only be entangling roots or vines." He say. "Sharp and strong enough to cut through flesh."

He raises his head up to look around. "Perhaps one of these varieties is sentient?" He muses. "We must be cautious."

He stands up and brandishes his dagger. He then uses it to cut a hearty enough stalk from one of the grasses. He uses it as a probe as the group continues forward, testing any new variety they come across.

Toston takes a closer look at the sunflower looking plants on the long thick stems.

He tries to gauge how strong the stalks are and how tall they grow. Are they strong enough to potentially bear the weight of a medium creature? Could you cut 2 uniform sections of stalk and use them as stilts perhaps?

Toston says to the party, "Do you reckon we could fashion stilts out of those sunflower looking plants? Like could we chop some down, cut them into sections, lash hand and foot holds using the smaller sections to the larger sections and use the result to get off the ground, get a better view of our surroundings and possibly move quicker?"

If the party agrees and it looks to him like they are strong enough he will start trying to chop down some of the stalks using his curveblade after charging it with magic.

Wil looks to find items to knock the grass down. He picks up a huge old tibia that could be used to beat a path forward.

Asteria proves that her axes will indeed serve as machetes in this overgrown wilderness.

Lornak does indeed note that some species of grass are sharp enough to cut to the bone. That's one reason why moving at speed heedlessly through the Plains would be a dangerous thing. [OOC: You estimate you would take damage for each ten minutes of hustling.]

Toston wants to use sunflower stems for stilts. For a Small size character with a decent craft check, that seems like a good idea. The stalks would not support a Medium size creature's weight. [OOC: It's a DC10 Craft check to make stilts, and you can take 10, since the materials are free. Assume an hour of labor for each set made, suitable for a Small character.]

Hmerrin helps bring Toston's stilts idea to reality.

Ethani likes the stilts idea.

Dušan sniffs and thinks that the smell comes from the same direction as the mountains.

Gaffer keeps alert. He sees the tall grasses move now and then, suggesting that creatures are moving in them. None come within 100 ft. Dangers or just wildlife? Unknown.

Gaffer swoops down to grab a small stone from the ground which he clutches in a claw. After he flies above, waiting slightly ahead of the group in the direction he thinks best for them to travel, steering clear of the moving grass.
If it seems any of the movements begin to converge on the group he attempts to cast 'Light' on the stone and drop it down as a signal before flying just above whatever approaches them.

Hmerrin finds the stalks can support Toston, and rather quickly whips up a pair of stilts for the gnome.

The arid heat and long grass putting him in a less than playful mood, he still manages to smile a bit at Ethani's joke. "We are always amazed by your forethought My Love. Now, maybe we should get going before we all start to dehydrate in this cursed heat. Since Gaffer is so kindly guiding us, we should probably follow him. Asteria and Wil, you blaze a path. Dušan ponders clever polymorphic strategies as the party moves forward. But he cannot cast Silence. Hmerrin's face falls in disappointment, but then Ethani proudly reveals that she has prepared the spell.

Atop newly crafted stilts, Keeps a keen eye out. He manages to keep up with the beaters.

Flying Gaffer watches from above and even has an alert worked out.

First Gaffer and then Toston report seeing something -- too far off for Gaffer to fly over. On the horizon, not headed straight for you, but not going away either, you see a SAIL!

Yes, a sail, as of a sailing ship. Perhaps there is a river or other body of water far ahead?

It is a half a mile off at least, and you guess the sailors have not seen you.

Ethani wants to get closer for a better view.

Lornak votes for Gaffer to scout the ship.

Asteria is enthusiastic about the ship, and the DM counts this as a vote to contact it.

Toston will go with the majority. Note that prestidigitation will not work to alert them at this distance. The magic is too weak.

Gaffer and Dušan are quiet.

That's no clear mandate, so the party presses on, hoping for a better look. The ship does get a little closer. You can see that it is a two-master, and that it is "sailing" over the grass as if it were water. The sailors are teensy at this distance. No one seems to see you deep in the grass -- nor do they see Toston peeking out on his stilts.

Soon the ship's course begins to send it on its way, away from you.

Gaffer flies lower to avoid drawing the ships attention as it moves away. The timing of recent events feels suspicious to him and he would rather avoid running into anyone or anything that might be involved. If they can get to the crystal and leave without speaking to anyone it'll be for the better.

He actually stopped abruptly to argue with himself.

The ship disappears. You make your slow way towards the mountains.

Also, what do you have with you in the way of food? You doubtless feel hungry if you have not yet eaten today. Water is not a problem, but where is the trail mix, sandwiches, and iron rations?

Gaffer returns to the ground to join the others. He helps ensure everybody's waterskins are full and joins the discussion to plan their camp out. "I can reduce the size of the plants in around 100feet of us, which should make spotting danger easier, but it will also make us more exposed. I'm not sure what smell you are noticing but I am not sure if I want to find the source or hide from it."

He listens patiently for the opinion of the others, if everyone is happy for him to he casts diminish plants, choosing to prune the growth in a circle around them.

Sighing after a long day of travel, Ethani smiles at Gaffer's suggestion. "Thanks Gaffer, it would be good to see what might be sneaking up on us. Hey, you don't happen to have a light spell do you?"

Her stomach growling, Ethani sighs. "If we can find some type of edible items I can purify it. And if you'd like, I can cast Locate Object again you see if we've gotten any closer, or I can just hold it in case we have an emergency in the night and need the breaking. If you want, tomorrow I can conjure up food in case we don't have any luck tonight. " Ethan requests an early shift so she can prepare for her spells.

Scouting out the immediate area, Lornak looks for edible plant life. Knowledge nature=25

After his scouting trip, Lornak checks through the group's gear to see if he can set up a rudimentary shelter and defensible position and insures if they should attempt a fire. Survival=15

Once he has made all the preparations he can, Lornak spreads out his bedroll to share with Ethani and prepares to take a watch in the middle of the night. Perception= Nat 20!

Preparing for the 3eve, Gaffer makes sure everyone has enough water. He casts diminish plants, choosing to prune the growth in a circle around them. That makes a clearing 200 ft across.

Dušan makes a campfire from native grasses.

Wil takes first watch. Ethani joins him.

Tomorrow Ethani can conjure some food. For tonite, Lornack finds a grass with a wet pulpy center that can sustain life. Purified and added to a few rations, that's enough for tonite. Lornak also makes sure the fire will not spread or start a blaze in the dry grasses.

Asteria wants to hunt, but does not do so tonite.

Hmerrin takes the mid-watch.

No one has volunteered for the early morning watch. That's ok, right? Monsters like their sleep too.

But, alas, monsters do lurk in the dark hours of the night, and they prowl this grassy jungle with an eye to dinner.

Please roll a Perception check. Ethani and Wil, the DC is 10 for you; everyone else, the DC is 20 since you are sleeping. If you make the check, you hear some very large creature prowling around at the edge of the clearing, beyond the light of the fire. It is a move action to shake a person awake. Shouting gives sleepers a Perception check to hear and awaken.

Gaffer awakens, hearing the soft footsteps of something prowling nearby. He moves to shake awake who ever is sleeping nearest to him, and gesture towards the source of the sound and then his ear.

He tries to move silently (stealth: 25) not wanted to encourage the creatures to attack, if they do however he calls out to wake the group, "We're under attack!"
