Stranger Things
Tuesday October 31st, 2017 9:40:00 PM

Lornak speaks to Eventide for a bit and while the elven woman is polite, she denies any sort of knowledge about such a weapon of alchemy.
Lornak has a bit more luck with his approach with Ffrul. He does want to know your name, but upon getting it is content to speak to you about your question. "While normally I do not give away such things, I feel you are in a bind and have some experience i the art. So my friend, I would suggest adding Striped Toadstool. It will put the mind at ease and through that, hopefully your friend will find a recooperative sleep."
Lornak returns to Shale House

Dusan's behavior and hagard look, has many of the group concerned at some level and they get together to inquire about it. Dusan begins to try and reassure them, but lapses into a partial slepp right in the middle of a sentence practically. As the group moves to help a loud banging outside of Shale House, a loud metallic banging. It is an old woman, beating a large kettle pot with a metal spoon and it, is, loud.
"You! I sees you! I know what you's in for! Prepare! Prepare!" Even as you look at her, a woman of ancient visage. Dressed in ragamuffin clothes, mismatched every which way and worn to bare threads. She transforms into a black cat, hisses and springs off. The small crowd on the street seem to have not seen or heard her and none make any motion or move that suggests otherwise.

Dušan thanks his friends for their concern and accepts their remedies eagerly. "At this stage I'll try anything."

As he gets back on his feet, he nearly falls back over startled by the calamity outside. "And I thought my nights were strange..." Dušan mutters as he casts Detect Magic to look for an lingering auras, "Did anyone else see that or am I still dreaming?"

Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP:45/45; AC:20 Touch 18; FF 16 - CMD 21  d20+7=10 ; d20+5=21 ; d20+11=29 ;

Lornak enters Shale House perplexed. The acquisition of his room items did not go exactly as he thought it would. A fact that he shares with Hmerrin; "You may need to help me out with the items I tried to buy at the Catacombs..." He asks.. "Would you be interested in creating a bed and a roll top desk like the ones in Marsh House for me here? I can take care of cost of course."

Lornak watches with fascination as Dusan has an "episode" when it is interrupted by loud noises from outside. He callously walks to the balcony and watches a similarly have an episode which leaves him haunted. "A pillar of fire by night..." He mouths softly.

Gaffer watches perplexed as the cat disappears, casting a third detect magic while wondering which kind of shape changer she might be. "Should we go after her?" He asks, as much to himself as anybody else. Trying to look through the crowd at where the cat went.

"Who does she see?" Will asks aloud and wonders.
"Stop, lady. I want to talk to you." Will pushes through the others in a panic attempting to speak to the lady.
He is disappointed to see that she has transformed to a feline and escaped.
He then adds, loudly. "You could give us some more information!"
Will then realizes that he is again making a fool out of himself and returns to the house.
"For such a charismatic guy, you sure do know how to make a fool of yourself," comments Cicero within his head. "Shut it!"
Wil snaps.

"Oi, you what?" Var says, practically tripping over the cat-crone as she zips away into the crowd.

Hmerrin(HP:67/67 AC:25 T:15 FF:21 CMD:23)
Wednesday November 1st, 2017 9:11:22 PM

Giving Dusan a dubious look, Hmerrin turns to Lornak.

"A bed and roll up desk? Sure, I can do that....What is with the banging?"

The lad heads for the door and catches the full cat lady show.

"Oooookaay", he drawls slowly. The fighter swivels from empty place cat lady used to be at, but only they saw, to Dusan on the floor, to Wil, because, well. Wil, back to empty spot.
"We're starting to peg the weirdometer, here," he comments.

Several of The Tide cast Detect magic and pick up the Dim lingering aura from the spot the strange old woman was standing. The aura persists for several minutes and then fades to nothing. The spell not being in affect any longer, there is nothing else that can be determined.

The day is early and several look to see if they could possibly follow. The small cat is nearly impossible to keep track of from the doorway of Shale House. To have any hope of doing so, you will need to run after. A few passers by take a moment to glance in your direction and one casts a spell to take in what he can see. A few rounds later, he seems satisfied and moves on.

Does anyone pursue or do you move on to other things

A couple of spells to assist and someone could attempt to track the cat, but even as anyone might step up to do so, the reality of tracking a cat through the crowded cobblestone streets dawns on you. It would require a tracker of heroic legendary proportions to do so. Lornak believes the woman now cat is long gone judging the crowd, but then, the crowd did not seem to hear or see her when she was screaming and banging a kettle in the middle of street.

The mystery may have to remain one though for now.

The rest of the day for most of the group is uneventful. Lunch at Tombo's, dinner and perhaps an evening drink. Always a good crowd and a good time at Tombos.

There is, however an odd chill in the air. Usually a front from the south would bring warmer weather, but this night will be different and likely produce a fog as the warm and colder air packs collide. The fire suddenly flares to life in the hearth and easing up out of the once empty rocking chair is an old woman. She takes several shakey steps, her eyes sunken, her skin taunt and ancient. "Prepare yourselves. The Time is Nigh, the end is near and all will perish is fire and storm unless you stand forth." She raises her hand and points at each of gathering about. "I have been told of you. I was told to find you, to warn you. The shadows of fear must not hold you prisoner."

She lowers her hand and slumps back into the rocking chair and as she does, she seems to look not as ancient as she once did. While still an old woman, there is more color to her cheeks and she seems not so frail. "Yes you are those I was told of." she whispers quietly

The old womans eyes pop open wide when Toston casts Detect Magic. "Yes! she squeels. "Excellent, take it all in." Toston settles in on the spell and shortly comes across multiple auras about the woman, the chair, and the fire behind her. he detects 2 strong emanations that blur other fainter spells he knows are about and unfortunately he cannot determine much more.
Wil state he IS ready and Dusan casts Deathwatch.
Dusan detects no undead in the vicinity of the spell. She sits back and nods her consent to Dusan, but assures him, "I am in fine health for a woman my age." Dusan takes a few moments and does come to the same conclusion. Her breathing, heart, eyes and such all fall in the norm for a woman of perhaps late eighty. She smiles when he finishes

Toston continues with a question or tow and the woman answers, "I was told by Janterri, the sleeping goddess of dream and future to find you, No to warn you. She has seen the end adn she has shwon some of the horror to me. You were placed in my dreams and so I come to implore you. The End is Nigh and now is the time for heroes to rise. No longer can you hide in the shadows of fear. If you do the End will occur. I have seen fire and water engulf the city So many will perish, but they are not whom you need to save. You need be the heroes for those not killed. I have seen the shattering of you. It is that which proceeds the onslaught of water."

She exhales as she became more excited as she spoke and she sits back and smiles at Wil, "My dear boy Wilford Grimly. Sweet Ceirco can tell you. I am most certainly a Witch. I have told you what I needed to, what i have been compelled to. You are forewarned."

Lornak contently listens to the old woman's prophecy. He is a little concerned as the others methods of identification are specifically called out by her. He in particular notes her use of the word 'shattering. The Tide is the only good thing he has going for him right now, he does not want that changed in any way.

"So the Gods are singling us out now." Lornak sighs. "Grand."

Dušan continues to turn to the lady and to his friends, hoping she might have a little more of use to say on the situation.

"Is it is a witchy premenation, I could attempt some augury of my own. It's not cheap, but I still have some coin left from our splits."

The old woman answers Hmerrin or perhaps is just leaving one last thought, "The end is Nigh."

She is gone, the fire is low and the later hours of the night settle in. Sleep calls out to all of you and eventually everyone answers.

The morning day breaks with a great deal of commotion upon the streets. More than normal and quite a bit of it coming from Tombos as well

Looking outside, there are several dozen wagons heading past, heavily packed and manned by halflings
Tombos is bustling to overpacked and the only reason you can see anything, is that it is packed with halflings

"He and others seem to visit my mind on occasions, making normal activities very difficult. I still seem to maintain quite the bit of charisma... most times." Will smiles.

After all the strangeness of the day, Dušan is even more eager for a good night's rest. He puts the packet that Var gave him under his pillow and downs the Peaceflower Syrup. "Hope this works..."

No sooner than his head hits the pillow, Dušan falls asleep. The dreams return in full force. With the sleep aids, he remains in the dream. Iconography of Gargul fade away as images of death and decay grow in their place. Dušan is lost in the imagery until someone takes his hand. Turning to his right, Dušan, sees his childhood friend, blood still pouring from his neck where the broken horned minotaur had left his lesson. Johnathan tugged gently on Dušan's hand. Dušan followed.

Taking only a step, Dušan suddenly found himself on a mossy island in the middle of a swamp. The fragrance of lilies filled the air. "I've asked Johnathan to bring you here." the now familiar voice of Visaura surrounded him, "I don't get to speak to many. The odd cleric here and there and more witches, but mostly I can only watch."

Dušan settles down vertigo begins to leave him and he finds his tongue, "Why do you wish to deny me Gargul?"

"I deny you nothing, I wish to show you. You poke at the Wold's Blood like a child with a stick. I can show you the true power that lies within the Wold's Blood. I can even show you things from your past, memories locked in dreams forgotten."

"My past?" and Dušan is suddenly in his mother's arms. A mother he had no memory of. He's an infant, swaddled and unable to turn, not that he would want to. He wanted nothing more than to continue to absorb every detail of this woman that Dirt City had denied him. He could see his eyes in face, but her ears. Were they pointed? Not as prominent as a full elf's, but the lineage was undeniable.

And then she was gone and he was alone, again, in the swamp.

"Accept me Dušan Danann," Visaura demanded, "and I can show you more."

"Yes..."

Early that morning he awakes restored, better rested than he had felt in a long time. His mind races as his conscious tries to come to terms with knowledge that seems he has always known, but is only just learning. Eager to put forth theory into practice, he brings hand down in front of him in a slicing motion. He feels the pulsing of the Wolds Blood and the power...

Recharged, refreshed and reinvigorated, he felt changed. A new man. Making eldritch packs with ancient beings is hungry work. He grabs his cauldron, eager for a fine meal at Tombo's.

"Hello, Dušan." Dušan hears Johnathan's voice coming from his cauldron, "It's good to see you again."

Looking down at his relic he sees his friend's face faintly in the reflection at the bottom of the cauldron. "It is good to see you Johnathan. I guess we have a few adventures ahead of us."

Johnathan's image smiles as it fades and says quizzically, "Oh! You're an Elf now..."

Dušan hands go to his ears as he enters Tombo's. He is struck with the just as perplexing image of a huddle of halflings around every table. "Oh come on. I just raised the bar on normal last night."

Lornak heads to Marsh House to grab some last things. He would be prepared above all things. Walking back, his sharp eyes spot the black cat streak across right in front him just in time to not step on it

Toston is down at Tombos. What a pile up. Standing at the edge he sees that the halflings exiting the place are all leaving with food. The crowd is ordering to go. The perceptive gnome notes the black cat hop down from a can and dart just in front of him on its way across the street

Gaffer might be new to the group, but not Dirt City. Runs like this and a practical wagon train of halflings is not normal. both he and Toston watch a second black cat follow down from the can and follow after the first

Wil, also down at Tombos, heads in a bit to ask what might be going on. Was that a cat that just brushed his leg. Wil learns what is going on, it seems nearly every halfling in Dirt City are leaving. Wil has several follow up questions and the response to why is,
"Our luck has run out here."
"Warrd is leaving and so are we"
"You ain't seen it yet, but the signs are all over us"

Hmerrin shows up downstairs and as he opens the door to head over, a cat hisses and bolts away from him into the street

Dusan awakens more refreshed in some time, his dreams sorted and his spririt calmed if you will. He notes his ears with his hands and then catches his reflection in the mirror over the mantle. Those are some fairly distinctive ears. The black cat that scoots from a chair to under the dining table past his feet, goes unseen by the distracted Dusan

Those in and about Tombo get to him eventual and he is dumbfounded. "Seems about every halfling in the city is leaving...today. And in halfling fashion they are raiding every place they can for food before they do. Bless them, they have an odd way to panic."

Tombos is cleaned out of everything he is willing to sell in a couple hours, and soon after that, the streets are oddly quiet. The halflings are gone, the wagons have left, at least this area, and slowly the more normal day traffic moves into the street

Overhead it is a dreary cloudy day of thick clouds that do not seem to be moving, but simply hanging over the city

Toston casts detect magic again as the cat darts in front of him after jumping down from a can. He is curious if this cat is possibly another crone in disguise.

"All of them?" Toston asks a little dumbfounded by the news of the halfling exodus. "In both the city above and the city below? How many own property in the city? Are they interested in selling? I mean I still have some gold left from our recent adventures so maybe some real estate speculation is in order? If the end isn't nigh we could stand to make a tidy sum potentially."

There was something about this that seemed like it could be familiar. Maybe it was just one of Enid's grim fairy tales, but it might have been in one of the books he read while he was studying with her. He wished he still had access to his old mentor's library, but he might be able to do one better.

"Does any of this sound familiar? I feel like I've read something about it before, but can't put my finger on it. I'm going to head to the library and see what I can find. Come find me if you think things are going to get messy. I may be a while"

Dušan wolfs down the last of the meager breakfast Tombo could afford after the Halfling migration, and heads toward the crafter shop that functions as the Sage's Guild Library of Dirt City. On the way he ponders where Ward would go. He pulls out his field manual and sees what he can puzzle out. (Knowledge Planes d20+16+1 Field Manual = 29)

The group in general inquires after the halflings and none know of any that are staying. If any are interested in selling what property they might own, it will take a longer conversation then can be done as they exit.
The cat is well gone from the range of Detect Magic by the time the spell could be cast.
Lornak and Var take in the skies, it is like a calm, like what one might find at sea. Instead of clear skies , though, it is dark and grey. If like a be calming at sea, it means it could look that way for weeks. A perpetual grey of dull lifeless sky
The halflings were quite busy and excited to get out, Wil got no other information on his follow up questions about Wardd.

Dusan heads to do some research, the circumstances seem familiar and begins the long process of tracking it down.

Gaffer heads out after the cat, as a cat. It takes some adjustments as the number of scents is numerous, but Gaffer is able to sort out what he is looking for and is off. He locates a black cat sunning itself on a windowsill. The cat looks up and the puts its head down unconcerned.

At the end of a long day, Dusan has tracked multiple end of days prophesies, but none all came together. there is no shortage to the End of Days, but Dusan is unable to come to a satisfactory story with the components he needs.

The day comes to a close and the group finds themselves about the table in Shale House going over the findings and musings of the day. It is quiet and peaceful. It begins as a faint vibration through the table, causing your mugs and glasses to hum slightly. The mirror over the mantle flexes slightly. Then suddenly the entire house seems to lurch, dropping several feet and then immediately launching itself to the left several feet. The house rocks violently and the legs of you chairs snap hurling all of you to the floor. The ceiling cracks and dust falls about you. The mirror above the mantle falls, shattering upon the floor. The sound of the house rocking is deafening and still on it goes.

Several of the heroes make it to the balcony, as the rumbling and shifting of the building rocks some of the others, preventing them from doing much aside from falling. The view outside is not comforting. Smoke and dust rises in great plumes all about the city. Whatever is happening, is happening to the entire city and beyond. Lornak can spy some of the taller ship masts in the harbor and notes that they too, are swaying and pitching back and forth. The sound is deafening on the balcony. The earth grates and groans and the group can see at least 3 buildings nearby have been reduced to piles of rubble. calls of panic and screams pierce the lower bass of the sound spectrum and in the street, people are being tossed about as they fight for balance and try to get to anywhere they might consider safe. But where is that when the whole city looks like it might simply collapse on itself.

Dusan is able to grab a broom and as he stumbles past he catches the reflection of the group in the various shattered shards of the mirror upon the floor.

Wilford, on the street has a more limited view of the city proper, being in the dust that is being kicked up. He does have a good view of what is happening street level. At least a dozen people are prone or curled into a ball in either the open screaming or just inside a doorway. About 50 yards to his right the hind end of a horse can be see sticking out from a pile of rubble that was a building earlier this day. Dirt City has not experienced an earthquake, let alone one of this power and scope before to Wilford's knowledge

Toston and Lornak get a few more people on their feet and stumbling into Shale House where Gaffer is able to get then secured against a solid door frame or the hearth. No one is hurt too badly, twisted knee or ankle some bruises and plenty of scrapes and cuts, but thankfully nothing life threatening.

Hmerrin exists and gets to another in need and helps her up. A few feet away a 5' diameter sinkhole swallows a section of the street.

Dusan casts a spell and gets airborne. He is now free of all of the problems associated with being on the ground. Dusan spies a pair of children he is in a unique position to help. They are on the third floor of a crumbling stucco and timber house a few doors away. a section of the room they are in has collapsed to the street and part of the ceiling has fallen on them.

Wilford takes a hard fall, 2 Dmg Non lethal but gets back to his feet, his nose bloodied from the impact with the street.

The split in the street continues to lengthen, but for the heroes on the street, at least it is currently getting no wider. One of the tails arrives at the rubble pile to the right of Shale house. The entire area opens up and plunges into the darkness below with a thunderous roar.

Gaffer, Lornak and Toston are at the house with 5 rescued people.
Wilford is on the street verbally encouraging folks to stay inside or get to Shale House if already out.
Var is trying to get back to Shale House with a woman.
Dusan is currently in flight about 120 feet left of Shale House.

The rescued people are in shock, but still very vocal in their thanks, but they also have questions?

the rumbling quake continues to batter the structures all about and the party can see more evidence of buildings losing their integrity as pieces fall to the street about them and in the distance.

Var locates a man and young woman only partially buried and quickly frees them. With thanks and
gratitude, the man thanks Var for saving his daughter. Both are quite bloody, cuts and bruises across their faces and the man's right arm is surely broken. Var is able to help both get to the safety of Shale House
Lornak has a moment of panic himself and cries out that the end in near. This has a crushing effect on those people inside of Shale House. They too start crying and wailing in despair.
Toston is able to salvage some hope and reassure the people before he charges back into danger to assist
Dusan gets up to the children, who are crying in terror. When he arrives, he sees a woman, her back braced against the debris and keeping it from falling upon the two toddlers. She screams at Sarah and John to reach out to the man and incredibly is able to reach out and give a slight push to the boy. Even as they step out and secure themselves with Dusan, the floor gives way and the woman plunges into out of sight. Dusan is at Shale House with the pair moments later
Gaffer, too, tries to calm the people, and Lornak perhaps and starts back outside. He missteps and slams into the door frame non Lethal Dmg 1

The people of Dirt City have now been enduring the quake for over 15 minutes, an eternity it would seem while in the middle of such thing. Lornak looks through the windows to get a sense of whats happening outside. The dust and debris is continuing to kick up. This tells him that even more buildings are falling. Lornak encourages the people in Shale House to get under the main dining table and they comply. He makes his way to the windows, the sky has him spooked. Why did the clouds not move?

Toston makes his way to another pair doing their best to follow Wilford's direction and he is able to help them inside and to safety

Var takes another hard fall [i]Non lethal Dmg 3[i] He manages to get up, elbow throbbing from the landing, he looks to see where he might assist

Wilford looks about, even as the ground pitches him into the dirt. Other than those already being helped, he see no one else through the dust and debris in the air.

Dusan lands, the children get inside and he heads back. The floor where the woman was is gone, the ceiling and part of one wall followed and all he can see down the whole is piles of timber splinters and rubble. From his vantage point in the air, he also sees no one else to immediately assist.

Hmerrin scrambles to the woman, and is able to get there and get her back to Shale House.

And then it s over... An odd quiet falls over the area and indeed all of Dirt City. Save for an odd groan of timber, or piece of stone bouncing down a pile of rubble somewhere nearby. Tendrils of smoke and dust roil upwards into the dark gray and motionless sky.. Shale House and the block within which it stands has held up well. There are cracks in the ceiling and walls, but nothing to great. The rest of the street fared far worse. In all 15 people rescued from the street and nearby houses during the quake. They are generally ok, no major injuries.

The quake is ended, and though Toston cautions that additional quakes could hit, aftershocks, the group heads out to see how they can help. If there are survivors in the rubble, they might not have that long before rescue turns into recovery.

Gaffer shifts into a hawk and takes flight. His sharp senses quickly find a second floor flat with at least two trapped people. The outer wall has come down and a large section of the roof has collapsed, trapping some people. Muffled calls fro help and a steady pounding brings the Hawk known as Gaffer into the area.

Toston heads down the street, and guides several folks coming out stunned and in shock towards Shale House as he moves to what used to be a town row at the end of the street.

Dusan flies out as well, using Detect Magic in hopes of finding others. While the Detect Magic does not assist him, his perceptive skills does and soon Dusan is hovering near a trapped family of 5. They had braced a wall with an oaken table as the roof gave way and saved their lives. Now the building was in terrible shape and they had no good way down

Hmerrin, Var and all of the others do what they can, moving out into the ruins of Dirt City.Nearly 25% of every building has either been destroyed or will need to come down out of a matter of safety. The Tide spend the rest of the day moving not only about their own neighborhood, but into others as well. They are not the only ones out, but it does seem they are one of the only teams helping not only their own, but any who are in need. Survivors are found and so are the dead. The clouds of dust and dirt still move through the air as you walk, stinging the eyes and choking your throats. Above the sky remains still as if holding its breath for something still yet to come

Those who have been saved are thankful, grateful and are not shy about it, but they also want to know where they can go. What is to become of them? This is, after all Dirt City. Charity is not a general feature and something one can count on.

Tombo, Ironthane and Sunny are all more than happy to lend their aid in the way of meager supplies that they have about to converting their places into places where those that need to, can use to stay in. Tombo has the largest open area for sleeping, but by using what space Sunny and Ironthane have for holding some supplies and moving tables into for eating, it creates even more open room.

Those on the street, spend time moving rubble, digging towards a few muffled cries from those trapped in piles of rubble. Dusan ferries people down from higher areas where they are trapped and secures some rope lines for still others. He is also able to take in greater views of the city as a whole. The place has been hit very hard. He also spies others taking in the lay of the land from air, none move to get near anyone else. They seem quite intent on remaining away from anyone else. More than a dozen fires burn across the city, most have no one trying to put them out. The Harbor is empty and well out to sea, a handful of ships can still be seen heading away.

Toston, WIl and Dusan make their way to see Boggs. The building is heavily damaged and several others nearby are nothing but piles of rubble. The interior of the house is a different story. most of the roof caved straight in filling the interior with debris. Sticking out from under some stone and timber, you spy a bloodied unmoving human hand. Somewhere through the rubble you can hear movement.

Var Gaffer and Hmerrin are at or in the immediate vicinity of Shale House. Var has his eye out for not only survivors, which he has helped find quite a few, but also looters and thieves. Thus far, none moving about the nearby few streets he ventures to have fit that description

A rumble rolls through the city and several damaged structures collapse in the 2 minute long aftershock. A reminder that everything is not done yet

The group has rescued more than 40 people and is currently sheltering 30. The other 10 are holed up in another house nearby. You have also found more than 30 dead and as you dig through more rubble, that will likely just go up.

It's been 4 hours now since the massive quake.

He converts some of his spells into levels of Summon Nature's Ally's, calling on Pony's, Elemental's and Apes where necessary to aid him in clearing rubble and escorting survivors. He keeps his head down and focused, ignoring the memory of city torn apart he saw from above, knowing that is not something he can deal with.

Hmerrin is at a loss. The city is a wreck, and Warrd knows what has become of the City Below. Based on his few months here, the man is guessing the number of good citizens coming out to help are going to be few and far between.

Which means they'll need to take care of these people, including defending them from those looking to take advantage, for a while.

The lad continues his work getting the House organized. After that, he'll see if there are folks among the group already here willing and/or able to look for more survivors, or start clearing paths to the next block.

"Does whatever form you take augment your strength?" Lornak asks Gaffer as he slowly gets used to the man changing shape regularly. Initially, it was a bit of a shock to him, not to mention the sight of elemental workers.

"Do not worry Kid, all walks of life come together in times like these." Lornak says after noticing the look on the young man's face when he catches him looking towards the City Below. "At least, I hope so." he mumbles under his breath.

The End is Nigh - DM Dan K
Monday November 27th, 2017 10:01:37 PM

The group does what they can, trying to dig some out, simply marking where others have died to be retrieved later. In many of the cases, too many, digging either finds a body or causes more rubble to shift and fall in. In the later cases, the diggers are forced to stop or risk getting buried themselves. the distraught and lost are everywhere. The scale of the carnage and destruction is city wide, nothing escaped and many, though hardened to life in Dirt City, are not coping well to their new reality.

Gaffer summons a couple creatures to assist, but unless he can communicate with the more intelligent creatures, they are of little help. No animal shows up trained to an extent of being able to clear rubble. Doing anything like that would require the animal to know the trick and for Gaffer to make a Handle animal check

Wilford, Toston and Dusan manage to recover the body and and thankful to see it is not Boggs, though they recognize him even as his name slips your mind at the moment. They are also able to locate the muffled banging and free a young dwarf. He calls himself Ironside and thanks his rescuers. Though young, he is more than willing to help the trio navigate the shifting rubble an soft zones that now occupy the city. There is no sign of Boggs or of several of the others that are normally here. Ironside arrived only moments before the quake and was in the process of leaving a message. One of the other survivors mentions having overheard Boggs and several others of the Trading Company having went to the City Below.

Over the next few days, Shale House and the rest of the businesses are fully converted and are full. The block about Shale House is clear to the point of a path at least to move about, though little else. Sounds of sword play have been heard in the early hours of the day and evening, though nothing has been seen. Fires still burn and smolder through out the city and no searches have found a way to the City Below. Only 2 ships returned to the wrecked docks and are anchored about 100 yards off shore. The streets are a shamble and normal landmarks are missing, making navigating the twisting streets of Dirt City even more treacherous and uncertain.

It is on the 5th day that the frozen sky moves and it does not take long for any looking up to miss the unnerving look of the immobile clouds. A cloud of lightning and fire moves about and over the city, tendrils of shadow and flames hang from the massive thing like that of a jellyfish. They seem to reach out and down to the earth and where they get close a bright purple and sickly green bolt of energy leaps from the tendril and strikes the ground or a nearby thing. A high pitched sizzling crack splits the air wherever a bolt strikes and even as you gaze in awe and horror a 2nd such abomination forms.

The group is together at Shale House and the hour is mid morning.

Two tall men arrive and grimly survey the scene before them. One wears some battle worn druid vestments and dark hair down past his shoulders. His eyes are dark and bloodshot, as if he hasn't slept well in a night or two, and the scruff on his face confirms he's had a long day. Those that looks close also notice that on his finger he has a ring marking him as a member of the Dragon Consortium.

At his back the druid has an entire swarm of air elementals await his orders. Six large elementals stand in a row, behind a row of four huge elementals, and in the front a greater elemental who's red eyes shine like rubees and cause it's whole body to have a slight glow.

Next to the elemental swarm is a huge treant and a second treant-like creature that's slightly smaller. There is something odd about the smaller one, but it's hard to place a finger on what exactly.

The druid turns to his companion.

Shock and awe and some sheer terror ripple through the group in waves. The cloud monsters inspire such feelings to be sure, but not in all that stand beneath them. Appearing in the center of the broken street are two men, by the rings upon their fingers they are legends among the more powerful and noble of heroes, members of the Dragon Consortium. And they brought assistance. A throng of powerful elementals gathered about them waiting for the order to do battle.

There are other thoughts from the group of heroes of Dirt City, The Tide. Analytical thoughts, those of design and purpose to try and reach some fragment of knowledge of some long story heard or read. None standing beneath them have ever heard of something like this. No thing in magic, nature or the deep dungeons of the earth bears any resemblance. As they do not appear undead, about the only origin point then is extraplanar.

As Toston eyes the distance, well within range at 400' and dropping and so he sends a shaft upwards. it disappears into the cloud

Var stares, bug-eyed, at the tablau, stunned into silence for a few moments.

Var draws and strings his heavy bow, slowly at first, but with more speed and certainty as he comes out of his shock.

"They's what, 200 feet up? Might be able t' hit 'em from here..." Var says, judging the distance to the sky battle.

Wil Casts fly upon the Constrictor snake he summoned.

The druid of the Iron Dragons sends another electrical bolt into the cloud. It too, fractures and lights up the interior of the creature.

The elemental swarm closes to attack. As the elementals close to their respective ranges, each creature lashes out with a psuedopod that stretches 20'. Their tagets are the Huge Elementals.

The elementals unleash their own fury and the sky turns into a nightmare of twisters of fire and lightning, peals of thunder rolling through you and reverberating into the ground.

The treants grab a handy piece of rubble nearby and send them sky ward hurtling into one of the creatures.

A long tentacle arcs up and sends forth a oily bolt into the ground 60' to the left of gathered heroes below. The other creature reaches out with a tentacle and sends a black petroleum like bolt of energy into the ground 60' to the right of the party. Where the energy struck, the ground begins to shift and moments later a 9' creature of earth and rock rises. Heat waves rise from its back and a dark sludge drips from its hammer like fists.

As the druid finishes calling forth a storm giant, he watches in sadness as a second elemental falls.
Looks like I may need to start replacing them faster than they fall. I wonder how much damage these things can soak up. And for that matter, where did they come from? I've never heard of a summons like this, and I'm pretty sure I would have heard tales of these things if they were a native species of this area.

Hmm, it looks like that other group is focusing on those earth elementals that just appeared. That should allow us to focus on these big guys.

Arrows streak skyward, imbued by powerful magic and holy wrath. They seem to almost explode as the slam into the creature one after another.

The Druid of the Iron Dragons calls forth a mighty Storm giant and sends another bolt of electricity into the cloud.

We are two members of the Iron Dragons, the Dragon Consortium sent us here to assist with the earthquake. It turns out there was a little more excitement waiting here for us than expected. "

The druid glances around the city, there is still a lot to be done.
I'm not sure how long we have here before the Consortium moves us to our next assignment, if the danger has passed we can help out while we talk. How best can we assist? I can call up a storm and put out some of these pesky fires. And my elementals can help clear away debris, are there any people still trapped? I also have a stone shape spell prepared that can help you get to the lower city if needed, but I would need to know if there is a good place to use it as I'm unfamiliar with the area.

Lorank slowly releases the tension on his crossbow blot and stows it. H e greets the members of the Dragon Consortium. " Well met, your timing was impeccably" Lornak says. "Your assistance, necessary."

The fires would be our first priority." Lornak sighs. "Beyond that, we've not heart from the City Below. The most trafficked thoroughfares to the City Below are through the tunnels under the arena above and under the temple of Waard to the east." Lornak points. (Diplomacy d20=18) If that way does is blocked there are sewers the exit along the edge of the docks."

He then instructs his storm giant to cast his control weather and create a rain storm over the city to put out the fires. The rest of the elementals are put to work clearing the streets and searching for any remaining trapped victims.

Once the debris is cleared i can try to mold a new doorway if the enterance is damaged. And the fires should be out before too long.

The Tide and the pair from the Iron Dragons have the time to talk a bit after the immediate danger is over. Contact with the city below and clearing the streets are the listed priorities. An Entire city of rubble is simply a task even beyond the powers of the Iron Dragons. It would take days for dozens of elementals to do so and as the task of clearing a way to the City Below begins, it becomes very evident that further collapses and cave ins could result if rubble or debris was simply moved from the known tunnels. No what happened to Dirt City is going to be a longer term approach.

Putting out fires and such is something that could be done, but how would others in Dirt City respond seeing an elemental swooping into an area?

The Tide very much have a control over the area of the city about them, but perhaps so do the Wolves, the Knives, The Cloaks and the other Houses? Moving into territories uninvited could bring retaliation

As the group gathers, a black cat shoots across the road. This may be even something beyond the might of the Iron Dragons

Dušan realizes he hasn't checked in on his coven in at least a day. "I need to check on some friends of mine it won't take long, but I can ask if they know where to direct elementals without stepping on any toes."

Dušan pulls out Johnathan, his sentient Spirit Cauldron and asks him to contact the rest of the coven. He makes sure they are ok, then asks if any areas of the city needs immediate assistance that wouldn't mind the presence of elementals. With crisis matters spoken of he also inquires if they have had any interactions with the influx of cats or other witches spreading prophesies of doom.

A Deep Breath DM Dan K

The black cat gives the party a good start but t is quickly gone and there are far more pressing matters to attend to. Again the City Below is brought up, but how to engineer any such tunnel clearing or perhaps the need to dig an entirely new tunnel is the real question.
Dusan reaches out to his coven and finds then basically well. Moderate bruises and abrasions, but nothing serious. They have not been very far and have been hiding ever since the sky became a war zone. Dusan's coven reports that the area is in shambles, they have no real information on a particularly more damaged area. none have been more than 100 feet or so in any direction.

Hmerrin thanks and makes a point to get a handshake in to the Iron Dragons.
The Time has come for the Iron Dragons to go. They bid a short farewell and are gone

Hmerrin estimates that one of the collapsed tunnels will take several months to move the 100's of tons of rock and debris from the entrance while shoring it. Building a completely new tunnel would likely be easier. And there is also the aftershocks over the next few days, maybe weeks that normally strike an area post earthquake.

The wealth and well to do of the City Below are going to have to fend for themselves.

Several ideas are offered

Head towards the palace and try to get in, you know to see the Prince.

Gaffer going Below on his own to see what is what

Start forging alliances with nearby blocks and moving out from there.

Reach out to other Houses

"I mean while the conditions surrounding the Prince's ascension are a little questionable, he did act on what we discovered in our investigation. He even knows Wil and Dusan's name so if we can get a message to him we could let him know what we are up to now."

"While the house system is systematically oppressive to the majority of Dirt City we have worked with members of the Darts, the Cloaks and the Keys in the past and we do have chits with some of these groups so we could always use them if we can find someone to talk to."

"Lastly, things have obviously shifted if the Houses are not in control of their normal turf in the wake of the earthquake mayhap we can forge alliance with those who are in control in the nearby blocks? So we could always start local and forge local alliances with nearby blocks as we make our way to the Prince and the houses."

Vorelle and the Free School's situation comes to Lornak's mind first. While he does not fear for the schools safety, he believes that alliances should be made with non-house groups first.

"Minus Gaffer." He looks at Gaffer. "Sorry mate." He addresses the remaining 5 of the group; "I propose we stay in pairs as we reach out. Its too dangerous to move about alone. I also think we should stick close to home. I will take The Kid and check in on the Free School skirting the Backstab Quarter then head to Cloak Tower."

"I suggest Wil and Dusan make an audience with The Prince as Toston suggests. Then he and Var can head to Dockside and perhaps The Scrum or Dart Tower?"

Before Lornak departs he finds and designates a person to keep watch over the Civilians at Shale House, suggesting that they work in conjunction with the groups tenants should they need assistance.

The group decides to split up in multiple smaller groups.
Gaffer is going to head into the City Below as an Earth Elemental to see what the place looks like.
Dusan and Wil plan to head towards the Prince's castle and see if they can get in
Var and Toston plan to head to Dockside and maybe onto to Dart Tower
Lornak and Hmerrin will head to the fighting school and look into building alliances with non House affiliated groups

Gaffer shifts into an Earth elemental and vanishes into the ground. Gaffer travels through the rock and emerges several hundred feet later in the City Below. Gaffer in the Merchant entrance area. Great cracks line the walls and ceiling. The area is completely dark and quiet. Gaffer has little to no experience in the City Below, but it is a good bet that the pressing feeling of a tomb is not normal.

Dusan and Wil head out through Moontown towards the castle. All of the streets are strewn with rubble and some are impassable from collapsed buildings. Several streets down you come across a a set of 3 men in the process of mugging several wounded citizens in front of what is left of their home. "Either hand over the jewelry or lose it the bloody way."

Var and Toston make their way through Backstab Quarter and into Warrd's Ward. Rock debris and the occasional body can be seen as the pair picks their way through and over . The Ward is in shambles. A dust covered face peers with frightened eyes here and there, only to quickly hide when you glance over. AS you crawl over what was the second floor of the building next to you, A moan catches your ears from the rubble.

Lornak and Hmerrin head through Backstab Quarter to the School. Working over and around the debris strewn streets takes about 30 minutes to get to the school. The building looks to have whethered the quake very well. The main doors are closed and on the roof you spy 6 individuals in the process of taking aim with bows and crossbows at you. They appear to all be dwarves and one calls out, "If you're looking for a quick score, you should pick a different direction."

Toston and Var both home in on where the sounds are coming from, but are not able to do much about it. The groaning continues and as the pair is right on top now, they can see part of a hand moving, pushing, struggling under the rock and debris. They also hear what they believe to be 4 or 5 others making similar groans as well. Lastly they both note that the moving hand is missing quite a bit of skin and a finger, but is not bleeding nor is any blood about the rocks upon which it is constantly scraping.

Lornak addresses the dwarf and he and Hmerrin back away. The dwarf acknowledges the group is out to help and wishes them well. "Be alert members of The Tide and watch yourselves. Not much good is walking the city right now. Your offer will be relayed rest assured and if anything you have the thanks of Torwyn Ironhammer and his kin for your efforts."
Hmerrin and Lornak backtrack and start to head for Dart Tower.

Gaffer glides along, his darkvision working well enough in the underground. About 80' he spies a closed portal, it looks to be of iron. There is no one about on this side of the door. From the dust and debris, best guess is that it was closed after the quake struck.

Dusan casts a spell and [i]Suggests[i] the group look elsewhere for easier things to be all brigandy about.
Will creeps up quickly and with a touch, plagues one of the other men with shadows and darkness in his eyes.
The third man spins about and watches one of the brigands agree with Dusan and wander off, the other man screams and scrambles backwards over to some rocks to escape. For his part the last one standing mumbles an apology to the people he was just accosting, keeping his hand in a visibly non threatening position, he tries to move back away from everyone.

Toston says to Var, "You are obviously stronger than I am, I have a potion of bull strength. Why don't drink it and I'll try to aid you in moving the rubble away from the people trapped."

(OOC: Toston means to take 10 on the strength check to aid another thus giving Var +2 as 10 + 1 = 11; if Toston can't take 10 the roll is another 4 meaning he fails and Var does not get a +2 to his check)

“And for you,” Dušan says to the survivors, “I would suggest staying off the streets for now. If you have no where else, we have set up Shale House as a hostel. Maybe pay less head to your valuables and more to food and water that will help you survive the coming days.”

Dušan gives directions and medical aid both mundane and magical if needed (Heal = 32). “If you know of others we’re trying to organize the survivors. The Tide can be reached at Shale House for matters of aid and trade.”

Worried that the brigands might return or others may be around the corner, Dušan attempts to be more perceptive of his surroundings. (Perception = 17)

Wilford Grimly (HP:44/44; AC: 18; Touch: 12; Flat: 16; CMD: 18)
Monday December 18th, 2017 7:27:02 PM

"Sir, you make sure anyone that wonders...," He says to the fleeing man, as April "... crime in this city has an expiration date."
Wil then adds to April, "Nice words, but really I'm not sure it's wise."
"Wilford Grimly, you stay out of this," April replied.
"Have you seen, Cicero?"
"He is sleeping and will return sometime."
Wil frowned.
"Share the word, my criminal friend. Share the word," April shouted. "Let's go see this Prince."
April then disappeared from Wil's pained face. Wil held his head, groaned silently and moved on.
"So sorry... again." He says to Dusan. "Apparently, I have a new visitor. You think the Prince is still alive?"

Once Lornak comes within even remotely close distance to longbow range around Dart castle he moves very slowly and keeps his eyes peeled. (Perception d20=20) He even thinks about raising a white flag... He cautiously moves toward the castle.

Feeling tense in this atmosphere he expects danger ahead. Gaffer attempts to pass by the portal by ducking gliding beneath, before coming up just enough to view the interior and remain unseen. (Stealth: 12)
He readies himself to duck back into he earth if there seems to be danger.

"You sure this is a good idea?" he asks Lornak, also advancing cautiously.

Dušan smiles a devilish grin at Wilford, "No worries, friend. For once my inner voice was in accordance with your inner voice...es. I wanted to see them suffer, too, but decided to gamble on spell efficiency. It looks like it all worked in the end by any means."

Of Mice and Men DM Dan K  d20+1=16 ;

Dusan and Wil send the brigands packing and those they were accosting back towards Shale House. The civilians head out with thanks, especially after Dusan so expertly wraps their scrapes and cuts. Dusan and Wil move on and soon come to their destination. Like everywhere, there is damage to be sure, but it seems the neighborhood in general survived well. A few downed buildings and such, but the only truly notable thing is the 6 corpses in the street. A pair of dwarves are pulling cloaks over them and while mumbling some words, are pouring what smells like oil. One notices you and looks up his hand moving to his slung war hammer and a word to his companion there is company. The other dwarf looks and gives a partial wave and brandishes his WLA badge. He moves towards you extending a hand, "Journeyman Hammerfall." He gestures to the bodies, "Undead. Seems not everyone who died in the quake is content to be dead."

Lornak and Hmerrin come within sight and range of Dart Tower. The structure took a hit, but does not appear to be listing or in immediate danger of falling. There seems to be a provision house and triage area set up using wagons and a few nearby homes. You don't appear to have been spotted yet by any of the nearly 2 dozen men and women of House Dart who are on lookout.

Var and Toston continue to try and free the person they are with. Var is able to shove a particularly heavy rock aside and reveals the trapped woman. A guttural hiss shrieks from her torn throat as she strikes at Var with a fist. Her other, now freed arm, grabs a rock and begins to pull herself completely free. In a small pocket, you see 4 others trying to crawl up after her. Var and Toston have just freed a trapped dead woman and for their thanks, she appears to want to eat them! The other 4 are clearly undead as well.

Gaffer slips under the door and strikes a solid barrier he cannot glide through in elemental form. While hard to see, even with Darkvision as you glide through stone, Gaffer believes and confirms that the passage beyond is completely lead lined between two of the layers of brick. If he wants in, Gaffer will need to go in the old fashioned way

"On second thought maybe we shouldn't quaff potions right now." he says to Var.
