[Everybody take 800 XP for the previous scene.]

Although Nightblade might be of use at some point, you decide to pursue your other clue immediately, and you head for Smuggler City. You cut through Grubbertown and the Midnight Bazaar--all but deserted at this hour--to reach the neighborhood in the shadow of the Tower of Teeth.

You ask around, and the consensus seems to be that "them Dunkles" are the ones to blame. Judging from the way people answer your questions, you aren't the first ones to be asking around here.

Searching for "them Dunkles" leads you down a muddy, narrow lane to a trio of ramshackle buildings. Gathered outside is a group of Dirt City citizens. They aren't an angry mob--yet--but they seem none to pleased with the situation.

Facing them are three human men in leather aprons. The one in the middle, a dark-haired, black-bearded man, stands with his arms folded and his jaw stubbornly set. The other two look decidedly uneasy. Somewhere in the ramshackle buildings behind the men, a baby is crying.

"--your fault!" a man near the front of the not-quite-a-mob-yet is yelling. "The docks burnt, and people dead, and them mermen on the warpath, all because of you and your fool family!" The crowd mutters ominously.

Stepping forward, she tries to ease some of the tension. "What seems to be the problem here?" she asks the leader of the mob. "Looks like you might be in need of some assistance." (Diplomacy=11)

He may have come out of the shadows a little too quickly. He hopes he has not startled anyone...

You push your way to the front of the crowd, and physically impose yourselves between the angry citizens and the three men in leather aprons. There's some angry muttering, and a fair amount of confusion, but most of the crowd seems to have turned their attention to you.

Ethani asks what the problem is. "I'll tell you what the problem is!" a man in the crowd exclaims. "The mermen came cause somebody was helping' them fishy guys. Swaggin, or whatever they're called." He points an accusing finger. "And they're the ones!"

From behind you, the black-bearded man says, "We're not helping anybody. We made a few business transactions; that's all." This draws angry mutters from the crowd, but they subside when Asteria starts glaring at them.

Toston continues the diplomatic effort, with help from Wilford and Dušan. "They've put us all in danger!" a woman yells. "Make 'em fix it!" somebody else calls out.

"Fix what?" the black-bearded man retorts. "We sold honest goods for honest coin. Nothing to fix." Sense Motive DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Although he's putting up a decent front, the man is worried and frightened.}

He pauses a moment awhile he reassesses. Better to quell the mob's anger before pressing the Dunkles on their own later. He then turns back to the crowd and ties to help Ethani appeal for calm:

Dušan casts a Detect Thoughts, but the Dunkles all prove impossible to read. [Rolled a natural 19, 19, and 20 for their saves! Sorry!]

The crowd, who had been winding down, seems inclined to step back when Wilford asks them to. More glares from Asteria, combined with Lornak's mention of the Knives, seem to seal the deal. The crowd begins to disperse.

The black-bearded man's arms are still folded, but he seems to have relaxed somewhat. "Wat Dunkle," he says gruffly, holding out a hand to shake.

To Wilford, he replies, "Well, we sold a buncha weapons to those fish-men. Sahuagin, I guess they're called." He sets his jaw. "And why shouldn't we? Ain't no law against it, and their coin's as good as anyone's."

"We shouldn't-a done it, Wat," one of the other men says. "I knew there had ta be a reason they come to us. Everybody else prolly turned 'em down."

"Well, everybody else ain't going to take care of our families," Wat replies. "We hadda have the coin, Zem." He turns back to you. "Anyway, thank you kindly for your help, but we ain't done nothin' wrong, and I ain't gonna apologize."

The young man waits, somewhat impatiently, for the discussion to move along. He keeps glancing at the streets, clearly expecting company. But, he never lets his eyes lingers anywhere long enough to penetrate the darkness.

You have questions for Wat Dunkle, and after a moment, he seems to decide to answer them. "Well," he says, "we can't talk out here in the street. You'd better come inside." He takes two steps before stopping. "Actually, my youngest is still sick. We'll go to your place, Zem."

"We still ain't patched that hole," the man called Zem warns, but he leads the way toward one of the ramshackle buildings.

The inside of the building isn't any more impressive than the outside. Paint is peeling; plaster is crumbling. The floors show numerous scuffs and stains, and, sure enough, there's a good-sized hole in the floor of the dingy parlor he leads you into. "You kids go on, now," he says to a trio of ragged children in the room. They look like they've been crying. "Was it the Knives, Pa?" one of them asks. "Are they gonna take you away?"

"Nobody's taking anybody away," Wat says firmly--although he shoots an uncertain look in your direction. "Mind your Pa, now, and let the grown folk talk."

When the children have trooped out, and you've made yourselves as comfortable as possible in the room, Wat begins answering some of your questions.

"We sold weapons to the Sahuagin," he says. "Different kinds of weapons. Tridents, mostly. A few harpoons. Crossbow bolts. Stuff we could make ourselves. They wanted crossbows, too, but we couldn't make those. We have a contact--a Sahuagin guy who came to us in disguise. After those first couple of meetings, we met with him and his friends outside the city. That's how we delivered the weapons, and that's how we got our gold." He spreads his arms to indicate his surroundings. "As you can see, we ain't got much. We're just tryin' to get by, feed our families." He sighs. "Buy shoes for the kids." Reluctantly, he adds, "I guess my brother's right--we shoulda known something was up. Why would anybody come to us, after all? But we needed the coin."

Toston tries to ascertain if the Dunkels are being truthful with regards to their ignorance of the penalties of selling to the Sahuagin and their need of money. (sense motive : 24)

If he senses they are being honest, Toston says to the Dunkels, "We need you to stop all trade you are doing with the Sahuagin. We are going to do our best to find you new customers to replace the Sahuagins. Are arms all you sell or do you make other items as well? We need to know what wares you make so we can find you an appropriate alternative revenue stream. We happen to work for a trading company and have excellent contacts with the merchants who recently caravan-ed to Acid City so we should be able to set you up with something. Until we can set you up with new customers do you need an advance? We are adventures so we have some money. We will give you a loan at 0 interest within reason"

"They should come to you because you are proud of your trade and your work shows." Dušan can't help but feel some simpathy for the Dunkles, "I still feel like we're missing something. A simple trade, even in weapons, doesn't seem like enough to set the Merefolk to open hostility on the the Dirt City docks. Did your clients ever mention any other dealings or where they were staying? What direction would they leave in after your trades?"

Toston is able to tell that the Dunkles are being honest with you. You ask them to stop, but Wat Dunkle shakes his head. "We can't stop," he says. "Turns out they're some pretty rough customers, and they've made it pretty clear we've got to keep the weapons coming--or else. Matter of fact, we're supposed to deliver the next batch tomorrow, and I'm not about to disappoint them."

Dušan thinks perhaps there's more to the story. Wat shrugs. "I dunno," he says. "I guess these mermen found out the weapons was coming from Dirt City and decided to put a stop to it. As for the Sahuagin, they never spent the night in the city that I heard about; they headed back to the water. We meet them at a spot west of town, on the other side of the Peaseblossom."

Var points out that the merfolk didn't deliver an ultimatum or anything before they attacked, which Wat can confirm.

Lornak asks if Wat can think of anything else that might be helpful, but nothing comes to mind. He is, however, anxious about the next day's scheduled delivery. "I know the merfolk are upset, but if we don't keep our word to the Sahuagin, they'll cut up rough," he says. "I'm not sure what to do."

"That would be perfect Wat. How about we make that delivery for you? I would like to know why they are interested in all these weapons. I'm afraid they may be interested in some sort of war or at least a battle. Dirt City can't afford to take a side. I can help with the negotiation while everyone else waits to pounce if it goes wrong."

"Can we even negotiate with just the Sahuagin?" Toston asks Wil

"I agree we should make the delivery, but in order to get any progress wouldn't we need a representative from the Merfolk as well?" Toston asks

"It looks like the Merfolk and Sahuagin ARE at war and the weapons provided are contributing to the Sahuagin's war effort. The Dunkels selling the Sahuagin arms seems to make the Merfolk think Dirt City is aligned with the Sahuagin. I don't suppose there is a way to peacefully end the conflict or at least establish Dirt City as neutral? If the Merfolk and Sahuagin are not willing to set aside their differences maybe the merchants of Dirt City could provision both sides or neither? I mean this really isn't our war and it would be great if they could have peace, but if not Dirt City should be kept out of it."

He is not keen on what they will face but he sees no alternative. He looks around the group and says sardonically; "Looks like a another protection detail..."

Ethani chews her bottom lip as the conversation proceeds. She doesn't really want to offend her new party members, but she is compelled to speak.

"Look, I get that this is your city and you want to protect it." The sea elf looks pointedly at Wilford. "Maybe you don't understand how evil these creatures are. Believe me when I say this though. I spent most of my life growing up in a war. A war with the Sahuagin to be precise. I have seen them murder so many friends and family that I cannot even begin to count. No kill mind you...but MURDER. There is no doubt in my mind that they enjoyed taking part in their deaths."

Ethani shudders from the memories, but continues. "My people, the sea elves have beaten the Sahuagin back from our lands after YEARS of bloodshed. It would appear that they now turn their sights to our neighbors the merfolk."

Looking at the collective group, Ethani lowers her voice a bit. "I speak Sahuagin. If you wish to negotiate between the merfolk and the Sahuagin, then I would be more than willing to provide any assistance I can. However, if you wish to allow these...people...to supply an evil populace with weaponry, then I cannot in good conscience help you. "

Looking down at the ground, Ethani smiles at Asteria's joke. "None taken, sis...though you will soon see the difference between a sea elf and a "fish person"."

Ethani delivers a passionate speech about how evil the Sahuagin are. "Wish you'd been here to tell us that a few months ago, Miss," says Zem, shooting a look at his--brother? Probably.

Wat looks uncomfortable. "Their coin was good," he says, but he sounds very unsure of himself.

You begin to discuss the possibility of keeping the appointment with the Sahuagin--either going yourselves, or escorting the Dunkles.

"You--you'd do that?" Wat sounds amazed. "You'd do something like that for the likes of us?"

Ethani looks over at Wat. "We are more than happy to assist you. Sahuagin can be...intimidating. But before we go too much farther, you said you had a child who was sick? I am a healer of Alemi. I am willing to do the best I can to heal your child if you will let me. "

Lornak empathizes with Ethani's reservations about contributing to a known conflict. Her words invoke racial memories of his distant cousins; the Drow and their machinations. He does his best to alleviate her concern.

"We will be taking these weapons as a means to sever the supply to the Sahuagin..." He looks sternly toward the Dunkles. (Intimidate d20=9) "...and protect the Dunkles at the same time."

Lornak continues. "Believe me. It is not an ideal situation but can you not bring yourself to support us?"

Hmerrin steps in for a hurried, whispered conversation with his comrades.

"Hello? Time to think for just a second? These people are toast if they stay here. We found 'em in a couple minutes, after all. The Knives are right behind us for sure, AND they've surely lost people to this attack. These folk'll be in the Arena day after tomorrow, if they survive the arrest.

AND if we sell anything to the Sahaugin, we're aiding a war at best, likely murdering a buncha people at worst.

AND if we don't sell, they come looking for these guys."

The lad pauses for a breath, and launches into a solution.

"My take is we hole these people up at Marsh House, so neither Knives nor Sahaugin can find 'em, and then we go to this meet and tell the Sahaugin to pound sand."

"Negotiate?" Var says with surprise that borders on alarm. "No, miss Ethani, this will be a lot of violence followed by prisoner interrogation. Assuming you can help us identify who's in charge."

Var straightens up to his full height, while not impressive at only 5'8", he exudes confidence and quite strength. "They dragged us into their war, and are threatening citizens who made the music trying to do business with them. I have no interest if making peace with the Sahaugin."

Toston says, "The tower is not complete and we have our tenants working on getting their shops set up. Taking the Dunkels there is probably not ideal. We should see if we can use one of the alternative safe houses. As for the whole war thing. It sounds like we are dragged into one whether we like it or not. My problem is the Mermen consider us enemies because of the weapons trade to the Sahuagin. Could what we are about to do sour things with the Sahuagin such that Dirt City ends up fighting a two front war against rival bands of sea folk. Ethani you said that you grew up fighting the Sahuagin, what do they number? What do your merfolk kin number? Do the populations rival the size of Dirt City? We need to be careful how we proceed. Ideally I'm for peace, but if the Sahuagin really are evil blood thirsty monsters that might not be possible. However maybe we can figure a way to drive the Sahuagin away such that we do not have to commit genocide to dissuade them from messing with Dirt City. Perhaps if this conflict really is between sea folks we can figure a way to keep Dirt City out of it. I think we really need to know more about the conflict between the Sahuagin and merfolk before we pick a side and join it."

As you discuss the situation, plans begin to form. You are concerned about the Dunkles, and want to move them to safety. A little questioning reveals that the Dunkle clan presently comprises 9 adults, and 15 children, although some of the older children insist that they're adults now. So whatever location you choose needs to be able to hold all 24 of them--or you'll need to use multiple locations.

Another concern is the Sahuagin. You ask Ethani how many there are, but that's kind of like asking how many humans there are, or how many elves. The answer is "lots," but what really matters is how many are involved in this particular conflict, and Ethani doesn't know the answer to that. The same with the merfolk.

You recall that at the warehouse meeting, one of the other groups was assigned to go underwater and find out what was happening. They might have some information soon.

In the meantime, you're pretty much agreed that you will be keeping the appointment with the Sahuagin weapon-buyers, thought Wat cautions you that they tend to show up in force. You may need some assistance.

Asteria also listens to Toston's joke, and even finds some humor in it. But the quickly disappears as she sees Ethani back away. Alarm shines in her green eyes as she turns to chide Toston. "Hey, lets keep this on the bad sea people and not just the sea in general."

It's hard for her to understand why her adopted sister seems so distant, but something feels off. Asteria is quick to join Ethani. "I'm sorry if he made you feel bad. I don't think he meant to though. Don't let it get to you, okay? Let's go get something to drink! We can take care of this, beat 'em up stuff later."

Turning back to the group, she adds a comment. "We should tell Boggs what we found out and let him decide. We need to protect our people and our city. If the bad sea people are threatening Dirt City, this is our fight. I'm sure Boggs will see it that way too."

"There's how many of them? 24!?" Being an only child growing up in a small village, the idea of that many relatives made Var's head spin for a moment.

Var volunteers to be the runner and inform Boggs of the need to move the Dunkles to safer housing until all the excitement over the Sahuagin dies down.

Var volunteers to go fetch Boggs and sets off on his errand. In the meantime, the Dunkles begin packing for a few days away from home. The adults don't look very happy about this, but the kids seem excited.

Lornak wants to get off the street--an excellent suggestion, which is why you already did it. :) You are in Zem's house, although with all the packing, there's a lot of running back-and-forth to the other buildings. Toston takes up a defensive position, much to the delight of several pint-sized Dunkles, who try to imitate him.

Ethani has an opportunity to look at Wat's sick daughter. The girl is clearly getting over a cold, but she is recovering. Given the general state of squalor and poverty the family lives in, you hazard a guess that aching heads and runny noses are probably pretty common.

It takes Var a while to return with Boggs, but at last your handler is standing in Zem's front room, surveying the situation. "I don't have a safe house that can accommodate so many," he says bluntly. "And I don't imagine you'd enjoy camping out in a warehouse. But I think I have a solution. We can escort the youngsters--those of schooling age--to the Free School. It's open to anyone, and they have dormitory facilities for students who want to live there. Security there is excellent, and I know the children will be well looked-after. That should cut down the size of the group, so that one of the larger safe houses can hold you all." He pauses for reactions.

The Dunkles seem reluctant. The parents don't like the idea of being separated from their children, and the children are complaining loudly that they don't want to go to school!

"This is the best solution I can think of," Boggs says. "Unless somebody else has another idea?"

Ethani looks to the children, particularly addressing the young girl she just healed. "Come now children. School will be fun! Think of it...you will get to play with other children, learn new skills. Why I'll be you can learn things that will help your Father's to become better business men. Why with your new education, you might even be able to build the business enough to move a bigger house. Or, you could maybe even learn how to become something else...a cleric...maybe even a big adventurer like Vorelle or the Iron Dragons!" (Diplomacy-6...why do I even try?)

Asteria goes to kneel by the children. It was hard to be pulled away from your family. Memories flashed back at being kicked out her her tribe. The pain on her heart still hurt to this day. They weren't exactly pleasant memories. She gave the small ones a large smile. "Hey, school isn't so bad! I hear you get really smart, and you can be tough! Just look at me, aren't I strong?" Flexing in front of them, she made an effort to show off her large muscles. "Your parents need you to be strong. You guys will be okay. Each of you children have each other, and you will be safe there. And if anyone messes with you, big sis Asteria will take care of them. Leave it to me!" Making a few punches-into-hand motions, Asteria stands up and rejoins the group.

I am a sorcerer so I didn't learn my magic through traditional schooling but I am also a monk and I learned my discipline by a school on a ship at sea. Who knows what you can learn at Vorelle's school? Magic? How to pick locks? How to fight? The possibilities are endless, you all have limitless potential."

Assuming the children agree Toston casts the minotaur version of Toros Taur Try on each of them conferring unto the children a bonus to Perception and Intimidate as they empathize with minotaurs.

You all seem to endorse Boggs's plan, and between Dušan and Asteria's diplomacy, and Hmerrin's grim reminders of the reality of their situation, the Dunkles come to embrace it as well.

They finish their packing, then, and you set off across the city to the Free School. As you leave Smuggler City, you catch a glimpse of what looks like a squad of Knives heading in the direction of the Dunkles' houses. Boggs sees them, too, and skillfully steers you all out of their way. You don't think they saw you.

Some of you have visited the Free School, and you remember that there were two Mailed Fist guards stationed outside the door, looking capable but nonthreatening. Today, there are four, considerably better armed, looking a lot less nonthreatening. They stop you and question you, and soon the kids are headed inside while the adults (and a couple of babes-in-arms) wave their goodbyes. Boggs leads the now-diminished group to a house in Wardd's Ward, and spends a few moments arranging for their stay. Then he heads back to the CMTC offices with you.

"Nothing's ever simple, is it?" he says with a wry smile. "Those are the ones who were aiding the Sahuagin? What else did you find out?"

I'll see what I can do about getting you some more help. In the meantime..." he pulls out a canvas sack. "I meant to give this to you earlier, but it slipped my mind. I asked Octavia and Ron if their groups had anything they weren't using anymore. I hope some of this comes in handy."

In the sack, you find a scroll of Water Breathing, a +1 heavy wooden shield, a +1 battleaxe, a Ring of Protection +2 , and a wand of Bull’s Strength (50 charges).

Wilford asks about contacting the Knives. "Probably not a great idea," Boggs says. "Even under the best of circumstances, they're likely to see it as 'muscling in on their territory.' And now, with one of their officers killed in the raid, I don't think they're in any kind of mood to be cooperative."

Lornak is encouraged to hear Boggs suggest that he intends to find the group more help. The upcoming fight might be bigger than anything the group has encountered since he joined them. "Well at least we have gotten the Dunkles out of harms way for now." He says.

A twinkle can be seen in Lornak's eye as he gleans a ring amongst the items Boggs shares with the group. Surface Drow so admire ornamentation, and this would compliment the one he already wears. He kindly asks if he may choose it for himself. "I'll would wear that ring if no one objects."

Asteria laughs at the discussion of who gets what. Another axe would be great, but she has her eyes on that ring. "I've got some pretty great axes already. You can have it, Hmerrin. I'd love the ring, if no one objects! Looks shiny. But I get it if one of you people who get hit the hardest want it."

As for a plan, Asteria keeps it simple. "We walk in, we beat 'em up, and we go home to drink."

With that out of the way, Asteria is totally ready for a drink. "Yeah! We should all go get ourselves a drink! Or two... Or three..."
