A Call To Arms

Many of you assist your new tenants--though anybody trying to help out in Sunny Sewing is likely to trip over Hmerrin. You know that your street tax ensures that the major Houses will (mostly) leave you alone; the Tonloe brothers have their instructions, and your tenants seem pleased with their new storefronts.

[Everybody please take 600 XP for the previous scene]

The next day, as you make your way from Marsh House toward the new building, you hear a major commotion coming from the direction of the docks. Approaching closer, you hear shouts and screams, and the unmistakable sounds of combat. You also begin to pass townsfolk, fleeing for their lives away from the docks.

You soon see the reason. As you get closer to the docs, you see that a large number of Merfolk are attacking the city. One of the docks is on fire. Several ordinary civilians lie dead and wounded in the streets. Sailors and street toughs are fighting back as best they can, but they can't compete with a trained, disciplined fighting force. The Merfolk are all riding some kind of mount, to help them move about on land. In their midst is a particularly well-armored Merman, riding a dire crocodile.

"Oi, what's going on here," Wil says as he watches the Merfolk. "Looks like we have some rescuing to do. Can we help the civilians fighting or do you want to jump right in?"
"I vote we jump right in," Cicero spoke from within his head. "I knew you would say that." Wil said out loud.
We need an advantage. I can cast some Darkness. That would give the civilians a chance to flee?"

Lornak walks alongside Hmerrin reminiscing about a crush he once had similarly in his youth; "She needed no adornment. No traditional dyes in her hair or tattooed trimming. Her eyes smoldered with an inner, fire..." He trails off as he notices the dock and mounted Merfolk on land. "...fire..." He says coming back to reality. "NO, Look, FIRE!"

Lornak sets about getting the wounded off the street and away from the oncoming onslaught. He does his best to figure out what kind of animal the Merfolk are riding and whether or not the dire crocodile is magical. (Knowledge - Nature d20=21)

"Tattooed trimming?" Hmerrin wonders aloud. Then he turns the corner and sees the combat.

"All righty then," the lad comments. He pulls his axes and runs toward the fracas.

As you rush toward the docks, you are joined by Elthani. You actually met her a few days ago--Boggs introduced you--but in the rush of trying to deal with your building you haven't had a lot of time to bond. Elthani is a sea-elf, with blue skin and red hair. A certain roundness to her eyes and ears whispers of human ancestry somewhere in her family tree. She is a healer, a servant of Alemi, and now she is running for the battle for all she is worth.

"Hi, guys!" she gasps. "I was just looking for you!" [That's what she says unless Nellie overrules me, because it's Nellie's character and she gets the final say. I'm just trying to bring her in. :) ]

You form up and approach the battle. It hasn't gotten any less confusing in the last few seconds, although it does seem that help is arriving. You catch a glimpse of what you think is another adventuring group off in the distance. A squadron of Knives is also bearing down on the scene. And overhead, an archer with wings on her boots fires shot after shot at the Merfolk. Those of you who have met her recognize Vorelle.

Ahead of you, you see a group of three Mermen and a Mermaid. All are riding strange creatures that look like some kind of salamander, equipped with saddles that seem designed for Merfolk. [They look something like this. ]

Two of the Mermen wield large tridents. The third has a longbow. The Mermaid has a little bitty dagger that she doesn't seem to be paying much attention to. They see you, shout, and head in your direction.

And the map. Just to catch Nellie up, you should have the correct permissions to move your character. And everybody else's character, but don't do that; be polite. :) On the map, the market tents provide some concealment, but not cover; you can move through them at half speed. Let me know if there are questions.

"So....what'd I miss?" the healer pants out after her mad dash. She still hasn't gotten her "land legs" as it were.

Spotting the Merfolk, Ethani is confused as to why her cousins would be attacking innocents. She calls out to them in Aquan "Hail, citizens of the Undersea Kingdoms. What brings you to these shores? Why are you attacking these innocents?! Cease immediately!" Diplomacy=6.

Never really one to actually succeed in Diplomacy, Ethani prepares for what she knows best...battle. Scooting back so she can actually take in the battle field (squeeze past Lornak and Willford), Ethani begins casting. She casts and casts, and caaaaaaasts (full round action), willing a lantern archon to appear in front of the merfolk about 20 foot in the air above them.

She calls out to her...allies...fellow soldiers...friends? "If anybody needs Bull's Strength, just let me know. Oh, or if you want magical armor, I can help with that too."

Wil stepped forward forty feet and into the alleyway. Suddenly his amulet burn upon his chest. A shadow appeared. "Cicero, stop," Wil insisted as a shadow form appeared in front of him. "What are you doing?" The shadow morphed into a wolf and approached the enemy with a growl. Cicero shimmered as he walked in and out of the shadows.
Wil drew his crossbow as he watched Cicero, the shadow approach the merfolk.

"Yes, tattoos! Have you never seen me commemorate an event in ink upon my skin after the fact?!" He asks Hmerrin. "It is very much our way."

As he runs he brandishes his crossbow and loads a bolt into it.(Standard Action)

Lornak notices Elthani merge with the group as they make their way towards the marauding merfolk. He is as struck by her shock of red hair as he was when he met her before. Its hue rivals that of any Surface Drow dye and would be admired as such for its brilliance.

"And it seems you have found us. Although, I am not sure if it happens to be under the best of circumstances." He says as he eyes the band of merfolk advancing. "Stay behind me."

Lornak takes his usual place between Elthani(healer) and the front lines. (Move action)

"You guys know the drill!" He then raises his buckler.

Dušan nods to Elthani as he moves to Asteria's side. "It will be nice to have a hand getting everyone up to snuff for a battle. If you start with Hmerrin I'll start with Asteria."

Back in his home city, Dušan easily finds a Ley Line to channel Bull's Strength on Asteria.

Asteria waves to Ethani, smiling as she takes out her axe. "Nah, you didn't miss nothing! Glad you came. We need a healer!" Grinning to Dusan, she thanks her friend. "I know I can count of you for a "here's some strength, go beat 'em up" magic thing! Let's take these baddies down!"

Taking a deep whiff of the ocean wind, the young barbarian pushes into battle, tapping her friends as she slides past them. "Scuse me, coming through! On your left, oh wait, your other left!" She eventually makes it to the front lines, just a little in front of Hmerrin. "Hope you don't mind me dropping in."

"Pay for protection? they can't even protect theyselves." Var says. Looking around at the alley, Var doesn't like his limited sight lines. So, slinging his bow over his back, Var grabs on to whatever lose mortar or timber he can find, and climbs up the side of the building nearest him (Climb: 24).

Once on the roof (OoC: Assuming Var is able to make it on to the roof this round) Var once again readies his longbow.

Ethani calls out to the attackers in Aquan. And, while her diplomatic efforts fall flat, she does get an answer to her question. "None who aid the foul Sahuagin shall escape our wrath!" one of the warriors replies.

Her Lantern Archon appears in the air near the attackers.

Using his amulet, Wilford conjures up a shadowy wolf. [OOC: Do you want to find a wolf picture you like for the map, or do you want me to find one?]

Hmerrin and Asteria move up and prepare for battle with help from Dušan.

Lornak readies his crossbow and buckler while Var scrambles to a rooftop to gain a better vantage point.

Toston moves up and casts a spell.

One of the warriors spurs his strange mount into a charge! His trident skids off Asteria's armor.

The other warrior backs down the street. He seems to be preparing a charge of his own, but he takes the time to throw a javelin at Ethani's Lantern Archon. It clatters harmlessly to the cobbles.

The archer nudges his mount forward and fires two shots at Hmerrin. Both miss.

The mage rides her mount casually through the tumbled marketplace. She casts a spell [Spellcraft DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {Chill Touch} ], then she---ohhh, that's disturbing. She reaches out her hand and her arm stretches all the way to where Hmerrin is standing. Hmerrin feels an icy touch on his chest, that seems to sap the life from him! Hmerrin takes 3 points of damage, and must succeed at a DC 14 Fortitude save or take a point of Strength damage. Knowledge Arcana DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {That stretchy thing is a power of the Aberrant sorcerer bloodline.}

Ethani sighs as Hmerrin indicates he would like a spell cast on him and then darts into battle. With a shake of her head, Ethani advances. Fighters...always so quick to rush in.

Noting Lornak's longer than usual glance at her hair, Ethani gives it a quick shake. These land dwellers were pretty good looking, especially this land dweller. Ethani gives Lornak a quick grin before she focuses on the battle.

Then Dusan indicates that she should cast buffing spells on Hmerrin. Alright then...orders are orders, she supposes.

Following behind Lornak, Ethani is suprised by the mermen's response.

Hmmmmmmm....I think there might be some miscommunication here... Ethani thinks. She calls out to her allies, and also loud enough for the other responding groups to hear. "Guys, there's some kind of misunderstanding here. They think we're working with the Sahuagin. There evil critters that live in the Kingdoms. Let me see if I can talk some sense into them before you guys kill them."

Turning to the merfolk, Ethani spits on the ground. "Sahuagin?! I would rather be thrown to the depths and the life crushed out of my body than work with those scum! " Pulling a strand of pearls from under her armor, Ethani produces them. "These were given me personally by High General Ashira Baraq, leader of the sea elves forces for my actions in the battle of Loralei against the Sahuagin. I remember some of your people were there. Many good citizens of the Kingdoms were lost that day. Please cease your actions and we can talk about this obvious misunderstanding." Diplomacy=14

Still, as Mom had always pointed out, Diplomacy without action is worthless. And even though Dusan had ordered her to cast Barkskin on Hmerrin, Ethani thinks a different order of spellcasting might be in order here.

Ethani readies Hold Person to be cast on the spellcaster should the merfolk continue their attack (Will Save DC 16).

"Cicero, stop. We may have an avenue to negotiate!" Wil shouted but the shadow wolf ignored him.
The Shadow of a wolf stopped beside the merman, in front of Asteria, and stared.
After a moment there was a hint of movement along the wall beside the merman. The shadow of the merman pulled from the wall to Wil's disbelief and formed a wolf's jaws. It came down upon the merman and attempted to bite him and trip him.

"Why do Aberrants try so hard to live up their name?" Dušan wonders aloud as he races to Hmerrin's aid, but his disgust distractracts his connection to the Wold's Blood.

Lornak kind of recognizes what spell the merlock mage is slinging but not quite. Magic is not his forte' after all. He's surprised at himself to even maybe knowing.

Before he realizes that Ethani is trying to quell the battle before it starts he pulls the trigger of his crossbow. A bolt hurls itself at the warrior in front of Asteria. (Attack Action d20=27, 7 dmg)

"Dusan?" Lornak says as he loads another bolt into his crossbow. "When you have a moment, would you be so kind to imbue me feline nimbleness?"

"What the?" Hmerrin exclaims, as mer-witch-lady reaches across 30' to tap him on the chest.
A wave of ice washes over him, but he jerks his head and shakes it off.

"Seriously," he mumbles. "That's messed up, right there."

New Girl calls for a truce, but after that little love tap, the young human ain't having any. He steps into the gap between Asteria and Wil, and strikes hard at the merman facing the barbarian.

Var moves across the rooftop so that he can fire directly down onto the front line of the Merfolk harassing Hmerrin. He draws back an arrow, but hears the call from Ethani to hold fire, and for a fraction of a second Var hesitates before he looses on the Merfolk Sorceress (21 vs. AC; 8 damage).

"This looks long past the point of talking." Var says to himself.

Asteria glances back at Ashira, hearing her yelling something weird to the weird bad guys. "Sorry, sis! Talking doesn't work around these places!" She swings at the closest merman to her, and misses spectacularly. "Talking might be a good idea now."

Toston cuts through the market, moving 30 feet and tossing up his red tinsel saying "Ho, Ho, Ho" to benefit from the gift he received almost a year ago.

Ethani readies an action and calls out again in Aquan.

"For someone who hates the Sahuagin, you've made a curious choice of allies," the warrior replies.

Meanwhile, the Lantern Archon targets the merman on the dire crocodile. Its rays do not hit.

Wilford's shadow wolf attacks the warrior, but misses. Wilford's own crossbow shot also misses.

Dušan attempts to cast a spell, but can't get a handle on the Woldsblood he needs to fuel it.

Lornak's crossbow shot hits and does damage. Hmerrin follows it up with some melee damage of his own. Asteria misses, but the Merman is nonetheless looking seriously hurt.

Var shoots the spellcaster, and does damage.

Toston moves up and performs an arcane gnomish ritual.

The injured Merman warrior withdraws. The uninjured Merman warrior charges, targeting Asteria, but misses. (Wilford's shadow wolf gets an Attack of Opportunity at the charging warrior.)

The archer fires two shots at Wilford. Both miss.

When the Merfolk attacked, Ethani's readied action went off, and she cast a Hold Person on the mage. The mage freezes mid-gesture.

Somewhere to your left, the Knives are fighting a pitched battle against more Merfolk warriors. Townsfolk continue to stream past you, running for their lives. You've lost sight of the other adventuring group, but the Merman on the dire crocodile is still in the center of everything. He shouts to his troops in Aquan. Highlight to display spoiler: {It's basic tactical stiff; this squad move over there; shore up the right flank; archers fire at will; that kind of thing}.

Ethani sighs at the stubbornness of the merfolk. She calls out in Aquan with remorse in her voice. "Your actions toward these innocents and your continued hostilities have brought this upon your own heads."

Ethani turns to Asteria with guilt etched on her face. "Take them down, but try not to kill them. We need to find out what's really going on here."

Moving down closer to the battle lines, Ethani begins casting again, targeting the croc rider. She calls out to him in Aquan "Soldier, you should rest. Lay down on the ground and take your rest." Command fall. Will DC 16.

To the archon, Ethani orders it to cast Aid on Hmerrin. The lantern sweeps forward and gently touches Hmerrin on the head as it floods him with positive energy (Aid, +1 to hit and 6 temporary HP).

OOC: I'm sorry about not moving Ethani yesterday, but I don't have access to Google Drive at work and couldn't move it. Please forgive the double move.

Lornak fires another bolt at the warrior in front of Asteria but believes it to be off the mark. (Attack Action d20=17, 4 dmg) He then maneuvers off the main road and positions himself between the merchant stalls behind Wil.

"Contrary to our reputation," He says to dryly to Ethani. "We aren't killers." He stows his crossbow and brandishes his whip and rapier.

Hmerrin starts a bit as the flying light lands near him, but the spell is a good one, so he relaxes.

"We have reputations?" he replies lightly to Lornak. "Whaddya know."

And with that, the lad turns his attention on the newly arrived merman.

Hmerrin seemed to be handling himself, so Dušan heeds Lornak's call and casts Cat's Grace on the Surface Drow.

"Goodie, now I can hit you without worrying about killing you! I got you, sis! No murdering if they run away!" Taking a swipe at the merman before her, Asteria is pleased to see that her slash is far better than the last.

Lornak fires a shot that goes wide of its mark.

Hmerrin attacks the second Merman warrior, and does damage. Asteria follows up with a mighty blow of her own.

Dušan casts Cat's Grace on Lornak.

Var fires a shot at the mage, which hits. Wilford casts Touch of Darkness on the Mage, and hits. [OOC: You cannot score a critical hit with an attack that doesn't do damage.] Toston attacks the mage and lands a solid blow.

The Merman who had withdrawn now charges Toston, and misses.

The other Merman warrior shifts his mount back a step (5-foot step) and attacks Wilford's wolf. He hits AC 17 for 8 damage.

The mage is not stunned, and she manages to shrug off the Hold Person, but that ends her turn.

The archer fires two shots at Asteria. One hits, and does 9 damage.

Ethani can't help but laugh at Asteri's comment. "Good plan there...Sis"

Maybe it was a barbarian thing to call people Sis all the time. There was still so much she needed to learn about these bizarre land dweller's ways.

And then there's the drow. Ethani is not exactly certain how to take his comment. After all, she had been talking to Asteria at the time, and she specifically remembers a conversation where the barbarian had indicated that she had not intended to kill an opponent but still did. Was Lornak joking, or serious. Geez land dwellers were complex!

Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, Ethani removes her wand from her belt and reaches out and gently touches Hmerrin, endowing him with more ability to take down her wayward cousins (Bull's Strength, +4 to Str). She then calls out the lantern, requesting it to grant Aid to Asteria this time.

Ever obliging, the lantern zips over to the barbarian and gently taps her on the head as it casts Aid on her. (+1 to attacks and +10 temporary HP to Asteria).

Ethani casts Bull's Strength on Hmerrin while her Lantern Archon casts Aid on Asteria.

Wilford clobbers the mage as his shadow wolf disappears.

Dušan casts Blindness on the mage as Lornak tries to trip her. Luckily, Hmerrin and Toston finish her off before your poor DM has to figure out whether somebody can be tripped if they A) don't have legs, and B) are riding a mount.

The mage's odd mount, deprived of its rider, begins milling around in the tumbled marketplace.

One of the warriors takes a step back, while the other continues to engage with Toston. He hits--because a natural 20 always hits--but does not crit. Toston takes 10 damage.

"Ouch" Toston yells as the warrior strike hits him.

Toston flurries against the warrior that struck him taking advantage of the flank. He first uses a swift action to charge his attack with magic and lets the merfolk have it with a one-two punch combo.

Dušan casts Blindness on the archer, who immediately cries out and begins groping around him.

Var, Hmerrin, and Toston make quick work of the Merman warrior. His mount, too, begins to mill about.

Wilford attempts to engage the other warrior, but misses.

Ethani casts Bull's Strength on Lornak.

The archer urges his mount onward, back toward the docks. Of course, he can't really see where he's going, so he provokes attacks of opportunity from Asteria and Toston.

A horn sounds and the remaining Merman warrior begins to retreat toward the docks--moving more carefully so he doesn't provoke.

Toward the docks, the Merman on the dire crocodile is rallying the troops, who are beginning an orderly retreat. Something momentous seems to have happened over where the Knives are fighting, and Merfolk are retreating from that fight as well. The dock is still burning, and you have lost sight of the other adventurers.

Lornak feels the familiar touch of agility fill out his nerve endings. He then watches the merfolk retreat and being the guarded drow that he is, does not trust what he is witnessing. He knows Vorelle is a strong fighter so if she is not within sight something is amiss. He backs up and blends into the merchants stalls at his back awaiting any unseen danger to manifest itself. (Stealth d20=23)

Heading to a nearby stall, Ethani finds a small length of rope. She advances on the sorceresses body and begins to tie her up (Escape artist=16). Using a small amount of cloth she carefully gags her as well, just to be on the safe side.

Once she is satisfied that the sorceress won't be escaping any time soon, Ethani gets to work healing her wounds (Heal=26). Feeling her efforts might not be enough, Ethani casts Cure light wounds for 8 hp. She works diligently, trying to bring her patient back to consciousness.

Dušan casts Stabilize on the the fallen, focusing more on triage until more help can arrive. He turns to Ethani between patients and mentions "I'm glad you came along. I was worried about looking after these people by myself."

He could mean all the pedestrians caught in crossfire, but he also clearly implies his friends with a wink and a smile.

Now considerably more nimble, Lornak backs up and conceals himself among the merchant stalls.

Ethani goes to tie up the sorceress, but soon realizes the Mermaid isn't going to be escaping--or doing anything else--ever again. Presumably, she is with Gargul now.

Var fires a shot at the retreating warrior, who slumps and slides off his mount. The mount stops, seemingly confused.

Hmerrin chases the warrior, but he is already down, so he (presumably) moves on to the archer. Asteria likewise pursues the archer, after hitting him with an opportunity attack. The archer falls.

Toston attempts a shot, but misses, and really the only targets left are the mounts.

Wilford looks around for his crossbow, but doesn't see it immediately.

Dušan is able to stabilize the archer and the warrior who was retreating. The other warrior and the sorceress are both dead.

The remaining Merfolk are retreating to the sea. Riderless mounts wander about, sometimes cut down by visibly angry or frustrated Dirt City folk. The Merman on the dire crocodile turns to face the city. He gestures to indicate the burning dock and the fallen citizens. "This is the fate of all who aid the foul Sahuagin!" he shouts.

From overhead, Vorelle launches an arrow at him. It hits, but does seem to faze him much. He glares up at her before following his troops into the depths.

The dock continues to burn. The dead lie everywhere. Around you people begin asking each other who might have been aiding the foul Sahuagin. Most don't seem to know what a Sahuagin is.

"Oi, this is a mess," Wil says and pauses. "Now where is that crossbow. Ah, there it is... wait."
He watches as the bow rises by itself then begins to move. "Oi, man. Let go of my bow."
He then chases the bow for a bit circling around a bit before finally snatching the weapon.
"Stay off my things, Cicero. You are this far..." He threatens but is fully aware he can do nothing to the shadow.
He then channels some Positive Energy to any of the dying that are good. (Channel Positive Energy: 5)
He then moves to search the merfolk. (Perception: 23)

Lornak watches as the last Merman sinks under the waters. He slinks out from behind the merchant stalls and does his best to keep the public from taking the life of the animal mounts. Killing them is senseless and inhumane regardless of the situation.

When he reaches the group again he has only one thing on his mind. He addresses Ethani; "Who is Sahuagin?"

Asteria pants as the mermen leave, snarling a warning to them. "And don't come back, you scaly, slimy, JERKS!"

Letting her rage subside, the barbarian turns to see the carnage of the streets. In a quiet tone, Asteria addresses Ethani. "Say... You wouldn't happen to be able to say a prayer for our people who fell, could you? Y'know... A parting gift, or something."

Ethani does her best to triage all the wounded, based on how serious the injuries are, with no regard to whether they are merfolk or human. As she goes about treating the wounded Ethani answers Lornak's question. "They are fowl evil fish creatures who live under the sea. I can't see how anyone would want to team up with them. Unless there are evil forces at work that you are not aware of, this looks like a colossal misunderstanding."

Ethani turns to Asteria, clearly upset at the battle and all the dead. "Asteria, if you would please gather the dead from *both* sides and I will be glad to say a few words.

Presuming Asteria gathers the bodies, Ethani takes a small amount of holy oil from her spell pouch and anoints each head. "Lord Gargul, accept these souls into your Lands of Rest. Judge them by their deeds." As she finishes, Ethani whispers "Forgive me Alemi that I could not grant your healing to them."

Wilford locates his crossbow--or rather Cicero does, and plays a bit of keep-away with it.

Lornak steps out of hiding to ask about Sahuagin.

Ethani moves about, tending to the wounded and saying prayers for the dead, with Asteria and Dušan assisting. Ethani is not the only priest present; others are sorrowfully performing the same task. There are more than enough dead and wounded to go around.

All of you are curious about Sahuagin. Because of her heritage, Ethani knows that they are a race of fish-creatures, and are generally not well liked. As to why the Merfolk thought Dirt City was aiding the Sahuagin--well, nobody quite knows.

Meanwhile, Wilford is searching the Merfolk. You find:

2 masterwork ranseurs (Actually, they're big tridents, but for game-rule purposes, they're ranseurs), 10 javelins, 1 masterwork composite longbow (+2 strength pull), 1 trident, and 5 daggers, In addition, there are 2 chain shirts, a set of studded leather armor, and a cloak that all detect as magic (assuming somebody casts it).

Ethani shakes her head at the sadness that surrounds her. Such pointless violence. Turning to Lornak, Ethani shudders. "We need to find out WHY they think this city is aiding the Sahuagin. Merfolk are known to be a tad bit stubborn. If they continue to think you are aiding their enemies, this will be just one of many attacks to come." Turning to Asteria, Ethani asks her to look for any merfolk that may have been captured alive. "We'll need to question them."

"Indeed." Lornak agrees. Both with Var and Ethani. "Something sinister is happening here. However, this is Dirt City, it could be anything; A major house, a lone conjurer or just a misunderstanding, its going to be hard to tell."

Lornak searches the sky and surrounding area for Vorelle. Perhaps she may know or saw something that could help them. "Vorelle!" He shouts. "Thank you for your assistance! If you are close by and can actually hear me, would you be so kind to tell me what you saw from the sky?!" (Perception d20=19)

"ewww... ranseurs. I've always thought these were cool. I should take one of these to hang on my wall at the building.. We could also hang a pair in the new training room. We should also round up some of these mounts to sell." Wil says.
"Anyone know how to wrangle them?" Wil attempts to approach one but seems to be lacking any sort of mount whispering. (Handle Animal: 4)
"I better stick to what I know," he then prays to Gargle to assist him with victims that are about to pass and offers them grace and a final prayer.
That is until he hears the pawing of his mother in his ear. "I'm so proud of you. You are becoming such a honorable man," she repeats this many times with a wisp of happiness.
"I'm not being rude, mother," Wil began. "I appreciate the praise but it's a bit much over and over."

"Sinister? Here?" Dušan asks in a tone dripping with enough sarcasm to drown even the most jaded socialite, "but we just got back."

Turning to their new companion, Var asks Ethani "What's the deal with the Merfolk? Thought they kept to themselves."

The big, buff barbarian nods to Ethani, and gets to work locating any breathing mermen. Nudging all the lying mermen with the toe of her boot rather roughly, Asteria drags any who still have a bit of kick in them over to Ethani with not much grace of delicacy.

Catching hold of a nearby mount's reins, Ethani speaks to it soothingly in Aquan. "Shhhh...loosa peeeeepo. Shhhh." (Handle Animal-13)

She watches Asteria corral any possible captives with sadness. These people should be their allies.

Lornak looks around for Vorelle, but does not see her. He calls out to her anyway; girlfriend is really good at hiding. But he gets no reply. Either she really has left, or she has no answer for him.

Wilford, meanwhile, tries to capture one of the mounts, without much success. Ethani has a little more luck, and manages to catch one by the....bridle? Sure, we'll go with bridle. Var looks it over. He has never seen anything like it before, but it looks like a very large axolotl.

[OOC: The riding axolotls are custom critters created by ADM Tom because I didn't want the mer-warriors flopping around on their tails. It stuck me as undignified. So, yay Tom!]

Toston and Dušan are able to identify the magical gear as 2 +1 chain shirts, a +1 studded leather armor, and a cloak of resistance +1.

Asteria attempts to round up prisoners, but she has some very aggressive competition for the task, in the form of some grim-looking Knives who seem to be spoiling for a fight.

"Leave them," a voice says, and you turn to see Abel Boggs, looking more shaken than you've ever seen him. "This is bad, and if we don't get a handle on it, it's going to get much, much worse. There's a meeting starting immediately, so grab your stuff and come with me."

Lornak stops what he is doing. (Handle Animal d20=5) Its probably a good thing Boggs stopped the handling. He is so out of practice, he was afraid he would hurt the poor beasts...

When he sees Boggs he is usually happy but can clearly see that mans agitation, which rarely shows, and is very very concerned. "What just went down?" He thinks to himself. Part of him is eager to know but another is wants to run and hide. He falls in step with the group and follows to the meeting place.

Var hitches the former Merfolk mounts to the first sturdy looking post he can find, more for their own safety. Checking his gear he quickly follows Boggs, a frown slowly growing on his face as they pass bodies of both sides of the conflict.
