Orcs on the March

[Everybody take 100 XP for the previous scene]

Although some of you are tempted by the idea of returning to Goblins Rest, most of you favor pressing on. You stick close to the merchants, and urge them to greater speed.

As you travel, however, some of the orc signs grow fresher. And, toward the end of the day, you see an orc war band. Worse, they see you. They head toward your group at a run.

On this flat plain, with merchants and carts and goods, there is no way you can outrun or elude them. You can, however, choose your ground and prepare yourselves. [You can state up to 5 rounds of actions, including moves. You probably want to move a short distance from the merchants, but you probably want to stay together, so make sure you all move roughly the same amount. :) ]

Lornak's stomach drops as he sees the orc war band. He was hoping to press through to Dirt City un-harassed. "Stay low." He says to his owl companion as he lets it fly.

He then quickly scans the area for any ridge or hill nearby that would give the caravan a height advantage. He suggests they split the carts up into two groups. He then yells. "Corral the carts! Half up there on that hill." He points his finger to show the merchants where to go. "Half down here to form a barricade." He starts to maneuver the carts into an arrowhead shape pointing toward the oncoming orcs. >

He hands the reigns of the horses to the knitting assassin. "The Crescent Moon Trading Company defends this point." He positions himself on the bottom left portion of the arrowhead to have a clear line of fire to the oncoming riders. "If we fail you will at least have a better chance to rain arrows down from up there."

Lornak then pulls out his crossbow and nocks a bolt into it. He readies his other weapons and waits for familiar spells to imbue their protection into his body.

Alizar was not entirely sure what he should be doing. Generally, very little planning was involved when he got into a fight. 'Point the Barbarian at whatever threatens you, and try to keep everyone alive' had seemed to work up to this point. He did his best to help Lornak move the carts into position, then readied his bow for action.

Hmerrin helps manuever a cart, glancing at the oncoming war band the whole time.

"I don't mean to be an alarmist", the lad deadpans, pulling out a potion and swallowing the contents.

"But thats a flippin' lot of orcs."

The fighter pulls out and quickly strings his bow.
When the lead orc is 200' out, he lets fly, and keeps shooting until they're within 30'

1st Bow attack (outside 110' range) hits ac 24 for 7 hp.
2nd bow atk likely misses. I guessed it would be within 110', but still only ac16 for 8 hp if a hit.

Divine Favor +1 luck bonus atk and damage for 8/10 rounds

Toston will move to keep pace with Lornak on the right side of point of the barricade as they work to secure a defensive position away from the merchants.

"You heard Lornak, lads & ladies lets form a barricade to defend the merchants!" Toston yells

Along the way he does the following:

Toston first uses his wand of mage armor to grant himself some additional protection.

He then uses his scroll of protection from evil on Lornak granting him +2 deflection bonus to AC / +2 resistance bonus to saves (OOC: for 20 rounds)

After that he casts shield on himself.

The gnome quaffs his potion of divine favor.

Lastly he draws his bow and knocks an arrow as he prepares to face the hoard with Lornak.

"So that's what an orc war band looks like." Dušan says as he takes in the sight, "I think I was happier living in ignorance."

Seeing others getting busy, Dušan returns to his wits and helps where he can. As he passes people he bombards them with spells of protection and enhancement. This land seems to be a nexus of particularly strong lei lines.

Dušan begins by casting Barkskin and Cat's Grace on Lornak. "I understand you missed my assistance last fight, Lornak."

Dušan catches up to Asteria and Hmerrin, casting Bull's Strength on both of them. "Let's start off on the right foot, or fist, whichever you prefer..."

Feeling a little heady from the flow of power coursing through him, he finally tracks down Wilford and casts another spell of Cat's Grace on the man. "That should help with archery and defense."

Var scratches at the stubble on his chin while watching the approaching hoard. He grunts, cracks his neck and gets to work. He helps get the wagons set up as a blockade, and takes up a perch on top of one.

"Anyone got one of those mist spells on hand? We 'oughta cover the merchants with it." Var said while casually stringing his bow.

Along with Hmerrin, Var looses arrows at the approaching Orcs, firing at whatever targets come into range first.

First shot: 300ft out (Attack: 23 vs AC (+2 favored enemy, -4 long range); 6 damage)

Second shot: 200ft out (Attack: 20 vs AC (+2 favored enemy, -2 long range); 11 damage)

Third shot: 100ft out (Attack: 22 vs AC (+2 favored enemy); 11 damage)

Asteria feels a cold sweat drip down her back as the dread of the situation settles in. She learns first hand how unsettling it is to watch a group of orcs charging straight for you.

Asteria helps move the carts with the rest, then takes up a position near the front. Glancing around to her friends, she mumbles a quick thanks to Dusan and a quiet prayer to Domi, in hopes of defeating these scary looking enemies.

Next, for the actual butt kicking. Asteria swaps her axe and shield for her composite longbow. Once the orcs are within 110 feet, she fires at them twice.

Wil takes on a scout position. He listens for any intent from the orcs. Any idea what they want.

Lornak begins by sending the merchants up a nearby rise. He also attempts to create a barricade against the orcs, but that idea has to be abandoned. The carts won't move without the horses, and there isn't time to unhitch them once they're in place.

You make do without a barricade. Toston and Dušan cast spells, and Hmerrin drinks a potion.

Everyone readies their weapons.

As the orcs approach, Var and Hmerrin open up with their bows. Several orcs drop.

You notice that the war band is strung out into three distinct groups, If you handle each one quickly enough, you might not be overwhelmed.

And then there is no more time to think as the first wave is upon you. One orc hangs back, beating a drum and shouting something in orcish. Orcish speakers Highlight to display spoiler: {It's a traditional orcish war-chant; slaughter your enemies; bathe in their blood; eat their livers; blah, blah, blah}

The remaining orc warriors charge at you! Three attack Hmerrin, and do very badly. Three attack Asteria, and do really well. Asteria takes 36 damage from 1 critical and 2 non-critical hits.

And the map. I kind of had to guess where people were; feel free to re-position yourselves. Except I was pretty sure that, whatever else happened, Asteria and Hmerrin would be the front line, so they probably need to stay where they are. :)

Lornak's stomach drops as he witnesses the first wave of orcs rush up to meet them. He has never participated in a large scale battle but with the clashing of metal and blood that spills in a matter of seconds, he decides that he never wants to. This is but a war party, he cannot imagine staring down a legion.

Spurned on by Var's shouting in tongues, he raises his crossbow and fires a bolt into the orc right in front of Asteria hoping the combined attack will fell him quickly. (Attack action d20=24. 6 dmg)

Lornak's hands are a blur as as he loads a fresh bolt into his crossbow. His eyes raise to the wall of orcs as he readies his buckler in a defensive posture, ready for what happens next. (Move Action, free action)

Both axes arc quickly back to slam into his foes.

The orcs were upon them before Alizar had time to really figure out what the plan was. So he did what he always does, heals people. Starting with Asteria, who seemed to really take a good smack to the face. (Cure Moderate Wounds: +14HP to Asteria)
She looked so bad, he decided it best to reach down and pull out some of the healing energy he stored for emergencies, which this certainly was...

Asteria feels her health plummet, and then subsequentially feels the healing force of Alizar bring her back up. She shoots him a toothy grin in response, then throws her longbow to the ground. Pulling out her battle axe and shield (free action), Asteria then tries to lay out the pain on the orc directly in front of her.

Dušan momentarily freezes as the orcs clash into his friends, but physically jumps when he hears Orcish coming from his friend, Var. Gathering his wits he sees immediate concern for Asteria and summons his Spectral Hand and with a Heroic Effort (Hero Point) sends it forward to cast Barkskin (+2 AC) to his friend in need.

Var hurls insults at the orc drummer, but the arrow is much more effective. The war-chant degenerates into a howl of pain.

Wilford fires...several shots. Is this while the orcs are advancing? Normally you would only get one shot per round. I moved Wil as far as he could go in a single round, assuming he didn't want to move there until after the orcs showed up, and it's only been 1 round since then.

Lornak drops an orc with a single shot.

Hmerrin grabs his axes and chops down two orcs.

Toston charges one of the orcs and lands a solid hit.

Alizar heals Asteria. [Did you use a Hero Point to take two actions?]

Refreshed, Asteria chops down one of the orcs in front of her.

Dušan calls up his Spectral Hand, ready for action.

The orc drummer stops drumming, draws a wand, and taps himself with it.

The remaining orcs, still bolstered, swing their falchions again, but this time they cannot connect with their targets.

In the distance, you see the next wave approaching: two orcs and two wolverines. Actual wolverines, that is; this is the Wolverine tribe, but they seem to have real wolverines along with them.

Lornak is reassured in his choice of initial quarry as he sees the orc in front of Asteria fall. He lets out a triumphant cry. "HaHah!" He is concerned for the barbarian as her assailants riddle her with blows. Lornak decides to help her once more by firing his crossbow at orc in front of her. (Attack Action d20=27, 7dmg)

As Lornak lowers his crossbow to reload it his eyes focus on the next wave of enemies scrambling toward their line. (Move action). He tries to determine whether or not the wolverines have any magical qualities. (Perception d20=14)

Toston uses a swift action to charge his attacks with magic, takes a 5 foot step and then flurries with his kama. His first attack misses (9 vs AC) but his second attempt is a bit better. (15 vs AC; 3 damage if it hits)

Alizar drops back from the front lines to stay safe from attack. The slightly nonrhythmic beat of a drum drew Alizar's attention to what appeared to be an Orc with some sort of snare drum. The noise was absolutely ghastly.
"This just won't do", Alizar commented, as he hurled a spell of 'Silence' at the Drum the Orc was holding.

With the front line holding, Dušan takes a moment to support himself. He casts Cat's Grace on himself and steels his nerves in case he needs to take aim against the orcs.

Lornak fires a shot that takes out another orc. He watches the incoming wolverines, but as far as he can tell, they are normal non-magical wolverines.

Between them, Wilford and Toston account for another orc.

Var fires again at the drummer, and hits.

Alizar casts Silence on the drum.

Asteria and Hmerrin have no nearby targets, but that's about to change!

Dušan prepares himself for further combat.

Confused, the orc drummer tries to move out of the Silence spell, not realizing that he is carrying it around with him!

Meanwhile, the next wave arrives!

A big, tough-looking orc moves up and tries to throw a javelin, but it slips out of his hand and drops to the ground right at his feet. [Natural 1!]

A smaller orc, brandishing some sort of skull totem, shouts an incantation. Spellcraft 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {Bane}. Everybody must make a DC 12 Will save or take a -1 penalty to attack rolls and certain saves.

The wolverines charge! One at Asteria, and one at Wilford. Both miss.

Instantly recognizing the spell as Bane, Dušan easily shrugs off the effects. "It's a Bane spell. Unfortunately I don't know the spell to counter it."

"I'll try to hold Will's Hyena so we can focus on the Orcs.."

Still in touch with the flow of Wold's Blood through this land, Dušan channels a particularly strong Lei Line and casts Hold Animal on the Hyena next to Will (Saving Throw Will vs 16 negates).

Lornak is slightly disappointed that the approaching wolverines are not of the magic variety. They look menacing to him nonetheless. The diminutive orc that brandishes a skull totem and spouts gibberish however, does not.

Lornak may not understand the language but he does understand a Bane spell when he sees it. (Spellcraft d20=16)

"That's not good." He says as he feels the orcs voice clack inside his skull. He turns his head to the side and his brow wrinkles as he fights through the enchantment. It does not deter his resolve. (Will Save d20=13)

After the effect has passed he freely finds his next target. All of his marks thus far have fallen like leaves. "Aw, look guys." He says amusingly to the group. "The little guy thinks he people."

The small totem carrying orc mumbled something, though Alizar couldn't quite make out what it was. Suddenly he was awash with feelings of trepidation and anguish. He was no exactly sure why, but in this moment, the futility of it all suddenly swam into focus and threatened to crush his soul. A lock of hair fell in front of his face, and covered a single eye. He did not try ot brush it away, what was the point.
"I've suddenly realized that to live is to suffer" he said out loud, really only to himself.

Alizar struggled to reach into his well of magic, for whatever good it would do. He pulled forth a most pointless 'Silence' spell, and cast it onto the totem that was in the hand of the orc mage, who would likely find a way around his charms.

Alizar casts another Silence. The orc mystic frowns and begins working out what happens. He seems brighter than the drummer; he's probably going to figure it out.

Meanwhile, the big orc has joined the wolverine in attacking Asteria. The wolverine manages to land a bite, and Asteria takes 5 damage.

You see the next wave approaching: some kind of orc officer and a really big wolverine!

"Your not going to hit it," Cicero suddenly pipes up. "Not now spirit, my confidence is low enough without you." Wil aims at the Orc officer with a Adamatine (+ 1) bolt in case it's armored up a bit.
After the bolt leaves the bow Wil asks Cicero to investigate why his amulet is still glowing. The heat begins to bother him and Wil takes from under his cloak. It glows orange on his chest.
"I know what it is," Cicero begins. "It's glowing."
Wil snaps angrily to no one. "Just Go!"

(OoC: Hey sorry, I forgot to roll my Will save yesterday, Var may not be the smartest, and he may not be the fastest, and he might not be the smartest... I forget where I was going with this.)

Alizar is troubled by a complete lack of Hot Topic stores on the Plains of Izen, but nevertheless musters the strength to channel positive energy to his companions.

Toston goes after the big orc, but misses. Hmerrin also goes after the big orc, and also misses.

Lornak did hit the wolverine last round (sorry!), and finishes it off this round.

Asteria lands a solid blow on the big orc in front of her; Var hits him with an arrow.

Still on his feet, the big orc steps back out of flank and swings his falchion at Hmerrin. He connects! Hmerrin takes 11 damage.

The orc mystic, having worked out what happened, drops his totem and moves away from it. This takes him a little closer to the melee than he would like, and he decides to take it out on Wilford! He points at Wil and casts murderous command. Wil must succeed at a DC 12 Will save, or try to kill his nearest ally! [If you fail your save, you get to decide if that means Toston, Var, or Alizar; they're all about the same distance from you.]

The dire wolverine charges! At Hmerrin! It misses!

The orc officer raises his longbow and fires a shot at Toston! It also misses!

Wil feels the murderous rage but funnels it into Cicero, who stands over his and shouts. Thankfully, no one can hear the dead shout.
The fact that this orc even tried to make him do something like that makes him mad and he steps right up to him and cast Touch of Darkness. Mixing in all kinds of unsettling feelings.

Hmerrin hisses as the orc's blade slices across an arm. Fortunately, he's able to hold off the approaching gigantic wolverine with the hand axe.

Alizar's familiar spell heals his wound, but the man's unfamiliar words draw a sideways glance.

"You might wanna lay off the funny mushrooms for a while," the lad observes to his friend, as he steps away from the orc. "You're beginning to sound like my sister."

The fighter then gets down to business, and unleashes a devastating blow with his battleaxe, followed by a strike from his handaxe.

It may have been Var bursting into flames, or perhaps the unceasing passage of time, but the fog, at least began, to start lifting off of Alizar's mind. He could still feel the effects, but they were hampering him a bit less. Which was odd, since the mage he swore was there one second, suddenly was not the next. (Spellcraft: 13) He couldn't worry about that right now. Still somewhat ruminating on the meaning of the endless void, Alizar moved over to Var, carefully placed a hand on a smoldering shoulder, and filled the half Orc with healing magics.

Dušan casts See Invisibility, and after scanning around for a bit, spots the fleeing orc mystic. He is off the map, to the south, and is pretty much running away. You could still hit him with a ranged attack if you wanted.

Toston flurries at the orc lieutenant and manages to land a blow. Asteria lands a much larger blow, and Hmerrin finishes him off.

Other than the fleeing mystic, which only Dušan can see, there are no more orcs. You have won! A ragged cheer goes up from the merchants still gathered atop the nearby rise.

After a few moments, Alizar begins to feel that life isn't quite as hopeless as he thought.

"Oh, yea." Another fight won.
Wil celebrates. He steps up to search for anything useful within the victims.
"You ever think it's kind of rude to search these beings after death? I was just thinking about it. Maybe, we should pray over them to help them pass onto the Shadowlands safely."
Wil fell to his knees and began to pray. After several moments his head began to swim with images. After the prayer a burden felt lifted and he felt light. He stood but was uneasy. He found his cloak soaked in blood, which had stained the ground.
He braced himself and listened to a distant gloating. His mother, he could feel her, was proud.

Asteria agrees that maybe being rude to some dead bodies might not be the best. She waits for everyone to get what they want from the bodies, bellows out a victory chant, then begins to move them into a pile away from the carts.

"Are we going to bury them, or leave them in the open? And does anyone want to, you know, say a few words? I don't know..." The barbarian pauses to sigh frustratedly, before figuring out her word choice and continuing. "I just like the idea of having the god of death favoring us, you know?"

Dušan fires a bolt after the retreating orc, but he misses, and the orc continues to flee. Doubtless by the time he finds the rest of his band and tells his tale, you all will become 7-foot-tall giants who breathe fire.

Lornak goes to check on the merchants, who are all well, and relieved that the orcs won't be a problem.

The rest of you debate the ethics of looting corpses while you loot the corpses.

You find a masterwork chain shirt, a set of masterwork drums, 6 studded leather armor, 8 falchions, 36 javelins, 2 masterwork hide armor, a masterwork spear, a breastplate, a battle-ax, and a composite longbow with a +3 Strength pull. You also find 2 potions, 2 scrolls, and 3 cloaks that all detect as magic.

Asteria asks if you're going to do anything with the bodies. It would probably be quicker to burn them than bury them, but it's entirely up to you.

Leaving the corpses out might attract scavenges that would further harass travelers on the road, not to mention whatever favors that might curry with the Gods." Lornak says, and begins gathering kindling (Survival: 16? Not sure if that skill check applies).

After the bodies have been positioned he helps light the fire, and sands in solemn silence for a moment. "Now with that done, we should continue on lest we attract any unwanted attention."

Perhaps surprising to some, Alizar decided to help Var with the Wolverines, he turned to the half Orc as he collected some tools laying around.
"They may be with their gods now, but mine have little respect to pay to marauding brigands."

With that Alizar began pointing out the choicest cuts of meat, assuredly much to the annoyance of Var who probably didn't need to be a doctor to know these things.

You divide up the labor; some of you butcher the wolverine while others prepare a hasty pyre for the orcs. It's all messy work, but you are efficient and can soon leave the scene behind. Because Hmerrin is right; the pyre is kind of obvious.

But you are able to put some distance between your group and the pyre before you make camp and try the wolverine meat. It's not bad.

Dušan looks over the gear you took from the orcs. The three cloaks are all Cloaks of Resistance +1. The scrolls are Sound Burst and Summon Monster II. [OOC: For future reference, scrolls can just be read with a Read Magic; no roll required.] One of the potions is Cure Moderate Wounds; you aren't sure about the other one.

Dušan tosses the unidentified potion to Toston, "I wasn't able to determine what this one is, if you want to give it a go."

After finishing of his share of wolverine, Dušan leans back with a contented sigh, "Watches tonight? Seems like 4 groups of 2 works well."

Anxious to leave the scene of the battle, Var leads the group out down the road and helps set up camp for the night. He follows his usual routine of gathering wood and locating some fresh water for the travelers and their pack animals. (Survival: 20)

The Half-Orc is quiet for the rest of the evening, speaking up only to volunteer for first shift along with Wilford. With the camp quieted down and the stars out, Var sits facing away from the campfire, eyes and ears attuned to the night (Perception: 22).
