[Everybody take 250 XP for the previous scene.]

As you approach the other caravan, many of you notice something a bit off. Alizar detects no chaos, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Dušan does detect some magic, but runs out of time before he can sort out auras.

Because even though you've decided to play it cagey, nobody told the barbarian. She opens with threats.

Four of the "merchants" draw wicked-looking greataxes. "I've gota better idea," one of them says. "How's about you hand over your valuables before somebody gets hurt." He jerks his head back, to where two more "merchants" are readying longbows.

Here's the map. I'm trying something a little different, using a backdrop instead of trying to find terrain. So the backdrop is mainly for flavor, and doesn't indicate actual terrain. That one bandit isn't floating in the sky; he's just a bit farther north than the others. Let me know if it's too distracting.

Dušan attempts to cast Bull's Strength on Asteria, but the power slips from him. Straining from the exertion, he warns the group, "They have some magic, but I couldn't make out what. Be on guard."

Lornak takes a swift action to bring out his swordbreaker dagger and raises his buckler arm. In the other hand brandishes his new whip. He is hesitant to get into a needless fight if he can avoid it.

Lornak is dismayed to see Wil fire a bolt at the highwaymen. "So much for diplomacy."

Held move action; Lornak will move in cover behind the front line(Hmerrin or Asteria) to play the middle after they move into position.

Toston casts the shield spell on himself.

He then says to the 'merchants,' "I got an even better idea. Why don't throw down your weapons in surrender or the only ones who will be hurt will be those on your side."

The gnome advances 5 feet and draws his kama, using a swift action to charge it with magic courtesy of the arcane strike feet.

Dropping his bow, the figher crosses in front of Toston. In stride, he pulls out his two axes, giving each a little circular flourish as he takes up position.

"OK fellas," he asks, with another flourish. "Easy way or hard way?"

Asteria smiles at Dusan for his attempted help. "Don't worry, I'm pretty good at this beating people up business." Then, she calls out to Toston and Hmerrin. "Let's move up together! I don't like getting separated from the group, people like to knock me down when I do that." With that, she moves up while grinning at the 'merchants'. "You should have left us alone! Trust me, we're not going to be the losers here." As she moves forward, she pulls out her Potion of Bull's Strength. "Time to finally get some use out of this."

In response to the bandit's threat, Var draws back his bow and offers a threat of his own.

Wilford fires a shot that goes wide. Dušan attempts to cast a spell, but the unfamiliar ley lines of the area work against him.

Lornak draws his weapons, while Asteria moves up and pulls out a potion.

Toston casts a spell.

Hmerrin fires a shot that hits! One of the bandits snarls as the arrow strikes home.

The bandits move up. Only one is close enough to move and attack in the same round; that one targets Asteria. His greataxe skips off her armor.

The archers re-position themselves. One fires at Dušan, but misses. The other targets Var, and hits! Var takes 7 damage!

"Well, that escalated quickly."

Alizar moved towards Var as he took an arrow shot. Though it did not seem like a serious hit, prevention is sometimes the best cure. He laid his hands on Var's back, channeled his positive energy, and sent a pules of healing magic into the half Orc. (+9 HP)

Alizar moves over to heal Var, who sinks another arrow in the wounded bandit.

Toston steps up and attacks another bandit, doing a small amount of damage. Hmerrin attacks the same bandit, doing considerably more damage.

Lornak lashes with his whip, and manages to trip one of the bandits.

Wilford fires another shot, which misses, and grabs his quarterstaff. [OOC: the cleric table tells you how many spells you get at each level. Take a look and let me know if you still have questions.]

Asteria would like to drink her potion, but it's a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity, so she can't do it and attack the same round. Also if she tries, the bandits get to smack her. Thinking the better of it, she just attacks, hitting the prone bandit for damage. [Because if you hit the prone guy, I don't have to do the math of subtracting from your "to hit" roll.]

The prone bandit stands up, provoking an attack of opportunity from Asteria. He swings his greataxe about in a Dazzling Display of martial prowess. Anyone with a Wisdom score of 17 or lower is shaken for one round.

[Showing my work: the bandit got a 17 on his Intimidate check, which has to be equal or better than 10 + the target's hit dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. Since you guys are 4th level, you have 4 hit dice, which means you'd need another 4 from your Wisdom modifier to beat the roll, which in turns you'd need an 18 Wisdom. Ta-daa!]

His pal next to him contents himself with just swinging an axe at Asteria. It skips off her armor.

The remaining melee bandits target Hmerrin, but neither manages to hit. The wounded one steps back to catch his breath.

The archers target Var, and one of them hits! Var takes 8 more damage.

Var is startled by the bandit's Dazzling Display, but that quickly resolves to anger and Var retaliates with a shot from his bow that buries itself deep into the Bandit's neck (26, natural 20; confirm: 23 vs. AC; x3 Damage multiplier for Longbow = 21 damage).

Toston is also startled by the dazzling display and because he is smaller than the bandit he is actually more intimidated by their adversaries prowess.

Nonetheless he takes a swift action to charge his kama with magic and then moves around the battlefield avoiding attacks of opportunity to attack the center-most melee combatant but his state of fear is enough to keep him from hitting (7 vs AC)

Lornak watches as his foe falls to the ground. His elation quickly goes south as the bandit immediately gets off of the ground and prepares for another attack. Lornak is dizzied by the whirring of the man's weapon as it spins in a well trained fashion.

Lornak strikes out at the bandit again with his whip so as to not allow the bandit's prowess to gain momentum. Attack Action d20=7.

Alizar had never quite seen a bandit handle an ac that way before, it was slightly unsettling. The sound of Var's bow releasing snapped him out of his semi stupor, and he placed one hand on Var's back again, channeling more energy, and once again healing the half orc. (+9 HP to Var)

Wil dropped the crossbow so he was unable to use the Dex bonus for that.
The attack with the ax was amazing and Wil stopped for a second to watch.
He approaches the Bandit, in front of Hmerrin and infects him with thoughts of his family in peril. (Doom) for 1 min.
The spell stirred a disagreement within the spirits inside his head. His mother was absent in the conversation and Wil pondered this fact. The voices were unfamiliar and their dialect was strange.

Dušan is noticeably concerned by the bandit's prowess, but he figures as long as he is showing off, he is not slashing. Dušan risks moving up again to try once again to augment Asteria's strength, but alas the unfamiliar Ley Lines prove too strange to connect with.

Var responds to the bandit's Dazzling Display by putting an arrow through his neck. The man drops without a sound.

Toston is shaken enough to miss his mark, as is Lornak. Hmerrin does a little better, and manages to slighly damage his foe.

Alizar heals Var some more.

Wilford casts a spell, but the bandit seems to shake off the effect. [Assuming a Will save of 17 was enough to beat the DC]

Dušan tries again with his spell, but the ley lines are still giving him trouble.

The melee bandits re-position [using 5-foot steps, so no AoO]. Two attack Toston, and both hit! Toston takes a total of 20 damage from two hits.

The remaining bandit swings at Wilford and also hits! Wilford takes 13 damage.

The archers shift their focus and target Dušan. Both miss.

Dušan's frustation boils over. He casts a simpler cantrip of Reduce Person on himself as arrows wiz by threateningly.

The situation on the left flank for becoming dire. Alizar shifted focus, and moved down the line to give him better position on his friends. Reaching deep inside himself, he began to channel the energies that gave his life focus, pulling forth healing magics, and spreading them out to his allies around him, touching those of 'good alignment'. This particular burst was especially potent.
(+12 HP to Toston, Asteria, Lornak, Wilford, Hmerrin, and Dusan).

Not quite satisfied, Alizar reached back inside himself, and pulled a bit of energy from the reserves he keeps in case of emergencies, channeling, and releasing another burst of healing energies to the party around him, healing them further. (+7 HP to Toston, Asteria, Lornak, Wilford, Hmerrin, and Dusan).

The fighter steps up and deliver a massive overhand blow with his battleaxe...which hits nothing but solid ground.
With a grunt, Hmerrin chops at the man with his handaxe, faring a bit better.

Wil growls when the bandit resists his spell. He takes the blow, grimaces but is thankful for the full heal from Alizar.

Var fires another shot, which isn't quite good enough to get through the bandits' armor. He calls for assistance for Wilford.

Toston, in bad shape after the bandits' attacks, steps back and concentrates on defense.

Lorna trips one of the bandits again, and looks around for the rest of the escort. You see the drivers calming the horses, who are nervous and look like they're going to bolt, and usheing the merchants away to a safe distance. So they're helping, but not directly.

Dušan makes himself smaller.

Alizar channels healing to all the good guys.

Hmerrin continues to chip away at his opponent, and Wilford finishes him off before retreating to the wagon to get a better weapon.

Asteria smacks one of the remaining bandits. [OOC: You should be adding your Strength bonus to your damage rolls.]

The two remaining bandits target Hmerrin this time. Only one hits, but Hmerrin does take 13 points of damage.

The archers target Var, and both hit! Var takes a total of 10 damage from two arrows.

Dušan has had enough with these foreign Lei Lines. He resolves to practice in a less pressing situation. In the mean time he pulls out his Heavy Crossbow and Rapidly Reloads it. He's not as skilled as Var to fire into melee, so instead, takes aim on one of the archers that has already been wounded.

Alizar was torn between trying to heal both Var and Hmerrin at the same time, or save his group heals for a time when they might be needed a bit more. He decided to go with the former. He shifted over to where Hmerrin was holding the line, placed his hands on the lad's back, and poured healing energy into his comrade. (+10 HP to Hmerrin)

Hmerrin parries one bandit's attack, but the other strikes a nasty blow.

Almost immediately, Alizar has healed the wound to a mere scratch.

The young man gives his opponent a little grin, and then takes advantage of Toston's flank to catch a good hit of his own.

"Two down, two hurt, and we keep healing our wounds good as new", he remarks pleasantly to his two opponents. "If I was you, I'd be seriously considering running away."

Var fires again, and this time hits.

Toston lashes out with fists and kama, but doesn't manage to connect.

Lornak trips another bandit.

Wilford switches to ranged combat and sinks a crossbow bolt into one of the archers.[OOC: Take a look at the map. Look at where you are, and look at where the archers are. Now look at how many bodies are in betwen you. I should be giving you cover penalties, but I know you're new at this. You have 30 feet of movement each round, so maybe you could re-position to get a better shot. :) ]

Dušan fires a bolt of his own, but it skips wide.

Alizar heals Hmerrin, who slashes one of the bandits. The man is starting to look seriously wounded, and already has a couple of Var's arrows sticking out of him. But he's still on his feet.

Asteria swings at the prone bandit, but even with her advantage, she can't quite land a blow.

Encouraged, the prone guy stands up, provoking Attacks of Opportunity from Hmerrin and Asteria. Assuming he's still alive, he swings his axe at Hmerrin, but misses. The other bandit takes a swing at Asteria before stepping out of flank. He misses.

The archers target Lornak. One of them hits! Lornak takes 6 points of damage.

OoC: Hey guys and gals, Frank's gonna be out for a few weeks while him and his wife take care of their newborn daughter, so I'm gonna cover his character until he gets back.

Lornak circles around behind the group like a jungle cat stalking it's prey, he follows the Bandit that disengages from Asteria and attempts to disarm the bandit. Lornak's whip, however, fails to find purchase on the bandit's axe. (10 vs. CMD to disarm)

Lorna circles around and tries to disarm, but for once his whip fails him.

Wilford sinks another bolt into his archer.

Dušan fires again, but misses again.

Hmerrin and Asteria both target the bandit as he stands. Only Hmerrin hits on the opportunity attack, but both connect on their regular attacks. The bandit drops, a surprised look still on his face.

Toston attacks with his kama, but misses.

Alizar heals Var.

The remaining melee bandit turns and flees.

The archers shoot at Toston, who was obliging enough to provide them with a close target! One of them hits! Toston takes 6 damage.

Toston casts a Burning Hands at the archers. They're pretty nimble, as half-orcs go, and manage to avoid the worst of the flames. [OOC: I'm not sure, but for now I'm going to rule that bloodline abilities don't apply to scrolls, wands, or potions.]

Hmerrin charges, but misses his attack.

Dušan wants to fire at the fleeing bandit, but Var has already taken care of him. Instead, Dušan fires at one of the archers, and hits. Asteria's shot goes wide.

Lornak attempts to trip one of the archers, but like Toston before him, discovers that these half-orcs are as nimble as a couple of elves! Lornak's attempt fails.

Wilford and Var both fire at the remaining archers, but only Wilford hits.

Toston attempts to stun one of the archers, but can't connect.

Alizar heals Hmerrin, who chops one of the archers with his battleaxe.

Dušan drops his Reduce Person and tries to persuade the archers to surrender. They do look shaken, but they don't stop fighting.

The archer by Hmerrin takes a step back and tries to shoot him. He misses because he is Shaken. Hmerrin owes Dušan a pint. :)

The other bandit, pinned against the bottom of the map by Toston, drops his bow and draws his falchion. [We'll say there's a wagon or a tree stump or something he can't get past and that's why he can't just stroll off the bottom of the map.] He's obviously not as good with his falchion as he is with his bow; he misses.

Alizar and Dušan turn to check on the trade delegation. They have moved some distance away, where they will be safe from stray arrows. The horses are still prancing and nervous, but the group looks unhurt.

Wilford suggests that the last bandit should be captured rather than killed, and tries to catch hold of him, but isn't able to hold on.

Lornak checks for other threats, but sees none.

Var tries to intimidate the fleeing bandit, but it's difficult to scare somebody into stopping running. The bandit keeps going. Toston chases after him. Asteria stands aside.

The bandit continues to flee.

Alizar let the fleeing bandit be the concern of the rest of the group. He turned to the wounded bandits on the ground to see if he could possibly save any of their lives. He moved among the fallen, checking for vitals and asking them, "Oy son, you still breathing?"

Satisfied that the group is not about to be ambushed by a second party, Lornak moves to the Bandit's caravan, and begins searching through their cart for valuables they took from other travelers. (Perception: 23 to search)

Toston continues to chase the bandit.

"If you stop running and surrender to me; we will not kill you." Toston says to the half-orc in Common, Draconic, and Sylvan.

(OOC: So does the Bandit have a 30 foot move speed meaning that running for him is 120 feet as Toston is the same and since he started 5 feet away from Toston they should always end 5 feet apart; important as I am considering using a hero point to try to stun him again)

Toston and Asteria hurry to try to catch up to the bandit, but alas, Var and Wilford's arrows are faster than they are. The bandit drops to the ground.

Alizar moves among the bandits, searching for signs of life. Unfortunately, he finds none. However, he does find something. One of the bandits is wearing a distinctive iron pin, depicting a hawk sitting on a stylized ship’s wheel.

Lornak begins looking through the bandits' gear. Soon you have a little pile of items.

Masterwork breastplate (4), javelins (16), masterwork greataxe(4), sap(4), masterwork chain shirt (2), masterwork composite longbow (+2 Str) (2), 31 arrows, masterwork falchion (2).

There are also 6 potions, which need to be identified.

The merchants are very impressed with your fighting skills. "They would have taken us for sure," Lukas says, "if you hadn't come along." He glances around at the others. "I think you have first claim on the bandits' gear, although we'd be happy to arrange the sale of any items you don't want."

"You know, I believe they had better armor," he notes.

The fighter peels off his own armor, and dons his latest acquisition.

"A bit lighter," the lad observes. "Not bad at all."

Asteria begins to drag the corpses of the fallen bandits off the road, leaving them in the dirt. "Even they don't deserve to be trampled. Let the animals take care of the bodies."

After her task is done, she asks for one of the Masterwork Breastplate. "A shinier piece of armor would be nice."

He shows the pin to his companions.
As they look it over, he tries his best to identify the potions. (Knowledge: Arcana - 15)

Dušan casts Detect Magic, but finds nothing he didn't expect to find.

Var gathers up arrows while Wilford discusses the battle with the ghosts.

The wagon and horses are yours to do with as you like.
Lornak tries to identify the potions but comes up empty.

Hmerrin and Asteria upgrade their armor.

Toston and Alizar examine the pin. Neither of you recognize it, although you can tell it is neither valuable nor magical. A club or society of some kind? A family crest? It's difficult to say.

It takes some time to pick through the bandits' gear, dispose of the bodies, and take charge of the wagon. The merchants are anxious to be underway again, and help as best they can. After about an hour, you are able to start down the road again.

Var approaches the horses drawing the bandits' cart, letting them get used to him and calming any jittery nerves they might have (Wild Empathy: 24; Natural 20).

(Wild Empathy (Ex): A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.)

he then goes about making sure that they're in good health and temperament to join the caravan (Handle Animal: 21 - not sure if this skill applies in the sense that I'm thinking).

He shrugs at the signet pin "Not one of the Dirt City Houses," (local knowledge: 6) "could be we're not the first caravan they've hit recently?"

Wil asks Var for the reins on one of the horses after he horse whispers it.

Assuming it has a saddle already, he hops upon it easily.
He wrestles with the animal a bit but manages to keep it straight.
He decides he doesn't need any new armor.

Asteria makes sure that she has all of her equipment with her and her new armor on before leaving. She then takes up a position at the front of the group with her greataxe out and shield up. If they encounter more trouble, she wants to go in full force.

After pocketing the pin, Alizar grabs the rest of his gear and falls back in with the rest of the caravan. He looked toward the sky to see the position of the sun. Realizing he never asked the question, "Exactly how long will the journey take?"
