A Friendly Brawl

The next morning, you arrive at the warehouse to find Shorry Daeb and his associates already there, along with an assortment of opponents.

"Introductions," Shorry says. "Gentlemen--and lady--meet Serk, Basjur, Sweet Lily, Bug, Ihintza, Sirpa, Tusia, and Kaelich."

You can give your names in return, or not; Shorry doesn't seem to be expecting it.

Serk and Bug are human fighters holding polearms. Serk seems to be a little more competent with his.

Basjur is a half-orc with a bow. Kaelich is an elf with a bow, who doesn't seem too happy to be sharing practice space with a half-orc.

Sweet Lily is a halfling who looks a little insane.

Sirpa is a human girl who looks too young to be here.

Ihintza is a drow rogue and Tusia is a human monk. Both look calm and competent.

"Does everyone have their practice weapons?" Shorry asks. After verifying that you aren't going to kill each other (on purpose, anyway), Shorry gives the signal to begin.

The opponents seem to be waiting for you to make the first move.

Var introduces himself, and then takes his place with the rest of the group. Stretching his back and limbering up - a luxury he nornally doesn't get when fights usually come as a surprise.

When the signal is given, Var draws back an arrow, and with a smile targets Basjur. (18 vs. AC; 12 damage. +2 Atk/Dmg for Favored Enemy: Orc; +3 for Compound Longbow).

Lornak sees Var stretch and while stretching seems prudent in his mind, he is nonetheless impatient for this skirmish to be over and readies his crossbow, keen to keep track of his rapier and swordbreaker dagger. Should close quarter combat become a reality, he will be ready.

He does his best to look intimidating as he loads and draws his crossbow. (Intimidate d20=14). When the signal sounds confidently shifts into position to target the archer Kaelich and lets loose the bolt quivering in its groove. (d20=17 doing 6 non lethal dmg if its a hit)

Dušan fills his quiver with non-lethal bolts and loads an extra into his heavy crossbow. Not wanting to make a target of himself, he dose not introduce himself. He takes postion behind the front lines and casts Bull's Strength on Asteria. "Let's see if you can make good on that bet."

Toston understands the idea of holding things in reserve, however his standard tactic of casting shield on himself to improve his chances of avoiding blows is still a sound tactic.

Toston moves 20 feet to stand side by side with Var, hoping that if anyone decides to attack Toston he can strategically move to gain flanking with the half-orc.

Toston then casts shield on himself. (OOC: SpellCraft DC 16 for the NPCs to figure this out).

He uses a swift action to activate arcane strike and imbue any attacks he makes with magical energies in case anyone gets close enough to provoke an attack of opportunity.

Hmerrin gives his name as 'The Kid' again, maintaining the pseudonym he adopted at the bar.

The fight starts, and Lornak steps in front of him to take a shot.
"Most time the archers go the back," Hmerrin chuckles. "Ah well, lets see how this goes. Asteria, please watch my left."

The young man swings around Lornak's right, pulling out his two axes as he strides toward Tusia. He swings both axe in parallel. right to left arcs immediately upon reaching her.

"Yo, I'm Asteria, the one who's about to kick your butts! Better prepare!"

Stepping up with Hmerrin, Asteria makes her way towards Bug, who just happens to be the closest to her friend. She gives a thumbs up to Dusan for the spell, before slashing at the unfortunate human who stands before her. (d20+6+4 [Bull's Strength]= 27 vs AC for 6 damage).

Var takes a shot at Basjur, which hits. The half-orc snarls.

Lornak sends an arrow flying at Kaelich, but the elf's armor is quite good, and the shot does no damage.

Dušan casts a spell to make Asteria stronger.

Toston moves up and casts a couple of spells to prepare.

Hmerrin moves up to attack Tusia, but she just barely manages to dodge his axes.

Alizar fires a shot at Tusia, which she also is able to avoid.

Asteria moves up to engage Bug. However, Bug is holding a polearm, so he gets an Attack of Opporunity as Asteria moves up on him. His blow misses, however, and Asteria's return strike hits true. Bug winces.

[OOC: I was in a tearing hurry last night, so I didn't explain this and I should have. Please move your character on the map when you move. Everybody should be able to move their character. Actually, everybody can move all the characters, so please just move yourself. Be polite. :) I went ahead and moved you this time.]

And then your opponents move.

Serk steps forward and swings his guisarme at Asteria. He swings low, trying to sweep her feet out from under her [OOC: Combat Maneuver to trip]. He succeeds, and Asteria falls flat on her back! She is now prone, with all the joy that comes with it.

Basjur shifts to a better vanatage point and fires at Lornak. He hits! Lornak takes 6 points of nonlethal damage.

Sweet Lily darts up to stab at the prone Asteria, but her knive stabs the ground instead.

Bug slides over to support Tusia, and also attacks the prone Asteria. His guisarme hits her, and Asteria takes 8 points of nonlethal damage!

And then the die roller breaks. The rest of the action to follow.

Ihintza scoots around to stab at Hmerrin with her rapier. She misses.

Sirpa yells something and points at Lornak. Two glowing spheres race toward him, and he takes 4 points of force damage.

Tusia flurries at Hmerrin with her bare hands, but misses both times.

Kaelich takes aim and fires two arrows at Toston, and one of them actually hits!. Toston takes 10 points of nonlethal damage.

Var sees Asteria go down and pivots in place to fire a shot at Bug and compound on the damage that Asteria had already done. (8 vs. AC) Var is a little too enthusiastic, however, and he fires the arrow too early, sending it off to the other end of the warehouse.

Apparently, Wil fell asleep because everyone was fighting without him.
Quickly he Summoned Cicero.
When the ghost appears as a balding sixty-five year old man with a cane.
"What is that? Can you take anything seriously?" Wil shouted in anger.
Wil then ensured his crossbow was ready to fire and aimed ahead of him.

Shocked by what seemed to be magic Lornak rolls with the hit. As he does he loads another bolt into his crossbow (Move action).

He attempts to fake discord between himself and the youth to see if it may have any affect on their opponents. (Bluff d20=11) Lornak yells with agitation at Hmerrin. "Crossbows have limited range you insolent whelp!"

He then fires a bolt back at Sirpa. (d20=22 d4=3 dmg)

Asteria finds herself in a rather difficult situation. One moment, she was standing upright, and in the next, she was laying on the cold floor. To add insult to injury, it seemed like everyone dog-pilled onto her as soon as she was down. The barbarian grimaces as she is stabbed, or poked forcefully, with the guisarme. She is rather thankful when Alizar's healing reaches her. Still, this is going to be bad. Not much she can do but attack from where she is and hope she gets help soon.

"Hey, I might need some assistance over here!"

Asteria swings, from the ground, at Sweet Lily with her battle axe.

"Take that, you little bugger! You may knock me down, but you will never take down my fighting spirit! Or something like that."

Var fires a shot at Bug that skips harmlessly off the floorboards.

Wilford began summoning a Dire Rat last round. This round, the rat appears and attacks, but misses. Wilford loads his crossbow. [OOC: When you roll an attack, please specify who is attacking (you or your summoned creature), and who is the taget. That makes my life easier. :) Also, I added a rat to the map; you should feel free to do that if you summon something.]

Toston steps forward and concentrates on defense. [OOC: I'm not sure what you meant by your swift action charge. The general rule is that readying is a standard action. Do you have a feat or something that lets you do it as a swift action?]

Lornak attempts to fake some discord with Hmerrin. Ihintza seems to take notice; it's difficult to tell whether anyone else did. Lornak shoots a bolt at Sirpa, and the young mage cries out when it hits.

Alizar calls advice to his team, while channeling energy only to those of good alignment.

Dušan tries to cast a spell, but his connection to the magic fails him.

Hmerrin steps back and takes a couple of wild swings that don't connect.

Being flat on her back doesn't seem to daunt Asteria one bit, as she trash-talks her opponents and strikes a blow at Sweet Lily. The halfling says some very bad words.

Serk takes a 5-foot step forward and tries to trip Toston. Apparently, he isn't used to short opponents; anyway, his attempt is laughable.

Basjur fires twice at Hmerrin, but both shots fly wide of their mark.

Bug steps up and attacks Hmerrin with his guisarme. The weapon bounces off of Hmerrin's armor.

Tusia goes a little out of turn, but she's got two teammates waiting eagerly for flanks. She steps forward and flurries at the prone Asteria. Both hit! Asteria takes 10 points of nonlethal damage.

Sweet Lily also attacks Asteria, with Tusia flanking. She hits! Asteria takes another 5 points of nonlethal damage.

Ihintza steps up and attacks Hmerrin with a flank from Tusia. Her rapier almost gets through, but Hmerrin's armor is too good.

Sirpa steps forward and points at Lornak. She shouts something, and now Lornak is frightened unless he succeeds at a DC 15 Will save. If he succeeds at the save, he is shaken instead.

[This may or may not trigger a readied action from Toston, but we'll resolve that later.]

Kaelich steps to one side and fires two shots at Var. Both hit! Var takes 23 points of nonlethal damage.

Alizar watches as Var takes a brutal blow from two bolts. Quickly, he reaches out and paces a hand on Var's shoulder. "Easy friend" With an application of focus, Alizar knit Var's wounds, in a moderate fashion. (Cure Moderate Wounds: +13 HP to Var)

The blunt arrows strike Var in the sternum, shots that would otherwise be mortal wounds. The pain rings in his ear as Alizar heals him, numbing the sensation somewhat. Var mutters a "Thanks" to the Elf, and returns his focus to the fight.

Visualizing in his head the angle of attack on the Halfling he nearly releases his arrow too soon. He takes another half a second to steady his breath and attacks "Sweet" Lilly (Spending Hero point to re-roll attack: 20 vs. AC; 8 damage).

The gnome takes a 5 foot step forward and then lashes out at Serk with a nonlethal punch that he applies a stunning fist attempt to. Unfortunately the gnome's small fist misses its mark.

The scream Sirpa makes is deafening to Lornak. Its power is enough to potentially affect him physically but luckily for Lornak, only shakes his focus. (Will Save d20=18) Feeling dizzy he staggers backwards and shakes his head to clear his vision. He nearly drops his crossbow. (Move Action) Frustrated at the use of magic in a friendly fight he loads a bolt into his crossbow with a notion to fight dirty. (Attack Action)

"Maybe if you took your job seriously you would be better," Wil shouts to the rat. It seems to also distract Cicero so Wil stopped mid-sentence.

Swords and arrows and whatever the heck is on the end of that pole whiz, flash, and caroom past the long-haired fighter. Most people would pause to appreciate the minor miracle that he's still unscratched, but Hmerrin just keeps moving.

Stepping under the guisarme, he feints toward Bug, then whirls on the monk, hoping she's too distracted by Asteria.

It almost works....

Irritated at himself for not getting the spell of to aid Hmerrin, Dušan accepts that he needs fall back before he gets boxed in the front lines. He backs up to Toston and casts Cat's Grace on Toston hoping to give him an edge in defense.

Alizar heals Var's wounds, and the ranger fires a shot at Sweet Lily. It hits, and the halfling woman staggers.

Toston steps up to engage Serk, but his blow is off the mark.

Lornak is thrown off by Sirpa's spell, but recovers quickly and loads his crossbow. [You are no longer Shaken.]

Wilford and his summoned rat both attack, but both miss.

Hmerrin steps up to engage Tusia, but both of his axes whistle past their target.

Dušan steps back and casts a spell on Toston.

Serk steps back and tries again to trip Toston, but the gnome is just too nimble for him. And just got nimbler, but alas, Serk has no ranks in Spellcraft.

Basjur steps forward and fires two arrows at Lornak. The first shot hits, and Lornak takes 8 points of nonlethal damage.

Sweet Lily stabs again at Asteria, and connects. Asteria takes 4 points of nonlethal damage.

Bug steps back and attacks Hmerrin again. This time, the guisarme connects, and Hmerrin takes 9 points of nonlethal damage.

Ihintza steps around to flank Hmerrin again, and again lunges with her rapier. She lunges too far, and almost topples over. [Natural 1!]

Tusia shifts position to get out of flank, and attacks Hmerrin. Both of her fists connect, and Hmerrin takes an additional 16 points of nonlethal damage.

Sirpa points at Var, and shouts something. Now Var is the one who's frightened unless he succeeds at a DC 15 Will save. If he succeeds at the save, he is shaken instead.

Kaelich fires two shots at Toston. The first one hits, and does 11 points of nonlethal damage.

“DOMI’S HAND!”

The barbarian curses rather loudly, taking hit after hit, until something snapped in her. She stands, no longer caring if she gets hit. All she wants to do is take down these opponents. Enemies. A red glare starts going over her vision as the rage builds up inside of her. You want to play dirty, knock me down? Fine. Two can play at that game. Cracking her neck and facing Tusia, the strange look in her eyes indicate that the once carefree attitude is gone, replaced by a deep sense of anger.

“Play time’s over.”

Asteria slashes at the monk with all her might. This may just be a practice fight, but she was planning on dealing out as much damage as possible. Payback time. She gets a pretty solid hit, a huge grin on her face. She was going to mess up all of these people, even if she had to do it with a nonlethal weapon.

Alizar channels more positive energy.

Asteria stands, provoking three Attacks of Opportunity. Only Serk hits, however, and Asteria takes 8 more points of nonlethal damage. Then she unleashes a mighty blow on Tusia, and Hmerrin adds an axe-strike of his own. The monk staggers.

Dušan casts a spell to bolsterHmerrin.

Now that Asteria is back on her feet, Serk tries to trip her again. He succeeds, and Asteria goes down again.

Basjur steps up to fire at Dušan. He hits! Dušan takes 5 points of nonlethal damage.

Toston scoots carefully away, and is able to avoid any Attack of Opportunity from Serk.

Wilford casts a spell. [OOC: You only need to roll a Concentrate check if you are hit while you are casting. Most spells have a short enough casting time that this isn't an issue. In this case, you would have cast the spell after Kaelich's shot hit you, so you didn't need a Concentration check. If, on the other hand, you had been casting one of your Summon spells, it would have been an issue.] [OOC2: The Command spell has a specific set of commands that you can give. "Lay down" is not one of them. However, "Fall" is a valid command, so we'll assume you said that instead. :) ]

The archer, however, shakes off the command [he made his Will save].

Toston now outside of the reach of Serk's weapon can finally stand without provoking an AOO. He does so.

As much as he hates to deal lethal damage, the rules did say that as long as it wasn't a fireball spell damage was fair game and his friends were in trouble. He then casts acid splash (Spellcraft DC 15 for NPCs to know what spell it was, Know[arcana] DC 20 Sweet Lilly to know what spell it was) at Sweet Lilly, lobbing an orb of acid her way. The orb strikes true.

Var tries another panicky shot, but misses. Shortly thereafter, he finds himself wondering what made Sirpa so scary. She's just a kid, for Domi's sake. [OOC: The spell has expired.]

Toston surmises that he can cast a damage-doing spell as long as it's not a super big one. He surmises correctly; Sirpa let off a Magic Missile in the first round, and nobody said boo. Although Lornak may have said ow. Anyway, Toston lobs a magical glob of acid at Sweet Lily, who lets off an impressive stream of curses.

Wilford fires a shot that flies wide of the mark.

Lornak moves up and readies his swordbreaker dagger, which seems to have Serk's name on it.

Alizar scrambles to his feet, which provokes an Attack of Opportunity from Serk and his darned reach weapon! Luckily, he misses, and Alizar is able to channel more positive energy to his team.

Hmerrin twists and turns, but Wardd has deserted him, and he's having no luck at all.

Dušan staggers back and fires a quick shot, which clatters to the ground about a foot in front of him.

Asteria goes after Sweet Lily, but her blow is delivered with more enthusiasm than accuracy.

Serk tries to trip Dušan this time, and succeeds! Dušan is prone! The attack sets off Lornak's readied action, but his blow misses. [OOC: Both disarm and sunder are combat maneuvers rather than regular attacks. So you would roll with your CMB rather than your attack bonus. You missed either way, but if you try again it should be your CMB.]

Basjur fires twice at Lornak. One arrow hits, and Lornak takes 4 points of nonlethal damage.

Sweet Lily moves up to try to attack Asteria again. She hits! Asteria takes another 5 points of nonlethal damage.

Lornak struggles to disarm Serk as the man's attacks are a blur. His combat reflexes take hold as his muscle memory finds an opening. Lornak bears down and attempts to find leverage to neutralize his weapon attacks. (Attack Action to Disarm d20=29, d20=13 to confirm crit.)

If the attack to disarm is successful Lornak will use his second action to attempt to attack Serk's face. (Attack Action d20=6, d3=4 dmg)

(OOC I rolled my CMB last round for combat maneuvers. CMB is 5 at lvl 3. Lornak gets a +4 to disarm using a swordbreaker dagger and I had +2 from Flanking. 5+4+2=11. However, the flanking may not apply because Hmerrin is in line but not adjacent to Serk? I rolled without the flanking bonus this round)

Switching tactics, Var pulls out a wand and begins healing his teammates.

Toston maneuvers up and punches Sweet Lily.

Alizar channels positive energy again.

Lornak attempts to disarm Serk. Fun fact: a sword-breaking dagger doesn't give you the Improved Disarm feat, so it still provokes an Attack of Opportunity from the target. Another fun fact: Serk is holding a reach weapon, and therefore can't attack Lornak standing right next to him! [OOC: You may have known both of these things, but other players are still learning, so I thought I'd point that out.]. Net result: one guisarme on the floor, and one rather put out fighter!

Asteria attacks Sweet Lily again, but boy howdy, can that halfling dodge!

Hmerrin finally lands a blow on Tusia, who is starting to look seriously hurt.

Wilford fires another shot, but it, too, goes wide.

Dušan casts a spell just to buy him some breathing room. Bug's Will save is not great; he drops his guisarme and flees.

Serk throws caution to the wind and tries to pick up his guisarme, which will provoke an Attack of Opportunity from Lornak. He then takes a 5-foot step, and, because turnabout is fair play, tries to disarm Lornak! He succeeds! Lornak's swordbreaker dagger drops to the ground. [And before anybody asks, yes, Serk has both the Improved Trip and Improved Disarm feats, because he's nutty like that.]

Basjur shoots again at Lornak, but misses both times.

Sweet Lily stabs at Asteria and hits! Asteria takes 4 points of nonlethal damage.

Bug is busy cowering.

Ihintza takes a 5-foot step to flank Hmerrin, and stabs at him with her rapier. Hmerrin is too well-armored, however; her blow does not get through.

Sirpa casts another ray at Wilford, who takes 1 more point of Cold damage.

Tusia flurries again, and manages to catch Hmerrin with a solid blow. Hmerrin takes 7 points of nonlethal damage.

Sirpa fires and hits but Var's spell returns him to where he was.

Lornak feels a wave of tremendous pride in turning his opponents tactics against him, he revels in the fighters look of shock as his weapons falls to the ground. The feeling is fleeting however as Lornak watches Serk reach to recover his weapon. Lornak lashes out at the man with his Dagger (Attack of Opportunity d20=15) and is dismayed that its off its mark.

Right as he thinks to himself; "I need more blade practice..." he feels his blade disappear from his hand as Serk recovers quickly. Lornak furrows his brow. "Two can play at that game." Lornak takes a five foot step brandishing his rapier. (Move action)

Lornak then furiously strikes at Serk and attempts to intimidate him pressing his advantage. (Attack Action d20+3+2 from flanking=8) (free action Intimidate d20+5=9 )

Asteria attacks Sweet Lily of the Ridiculous Armor Class, and has no more luck than Toston did.

Serk steps back and tries to disarm Lornak again. He succeeds, and now Lornak's rapier is on the ground.

Basjur fires twice at Lornak, hitting once. Lornak takes 8 points of nonlethal damage.

Sweet Lily sidles out of flank and attacks Asteria again. She hits, and Asteria takes 4 more points of nonlethal damage.

In stepping up next to Sirpa, Toston succeeded in startling the young spellcaster. She responds by casting her last Cause Fear at him! Toston is frightened, unless he succeeds at a DC 15 Will save, in which case he is only shaken.

Tusia flurries. Her first blow is so bad she nearly overbalances, but she manages to catch Hmerrin on the backswing. Hmerrin takes 6 damage.

The sight of the clown mask upon the older ghost of a man would've likely been seen by the others. A little validation from what Wil has to deal with all the time. Maybe it's just a floating clown mask, which is just as frightening but the mask drops at the feet of the archer and Wil prepares to take advantage. He smiles knowing that he has helped the group recover from the initial defeats they were taking from the archer.

Having dropped his crossbow, his dagger knocked from him and his rapier flung as well, something inside Lornak snaps. A rage wells up and begs to be released upon this man Serk. "That's it." Lornak hears as lunges at the man. (5 foot step Move action)

Alizar takes a deep breath, and launches himself into the melee. Skirting around the outside of Serk's reach, he come up right behind Asteria and Hmerrin. He gently places a hand on the raging barbarian's shoulder, (being careful not to lose it in the process) and says a single word of prayer.

Var heals Hmerrin.

Wilford uses his clown-mask prize to try to scare Kaelich. The elf archer is visibly shaken.

Lornak sizes up Serk. He's not the most nimble guy you've ever seen, that's for sure. He has to be pretty smart, though, to learn those maneuvers. He's wearing full plate, and he's got that blankety-blank guisarme. He's maybe not as strong as some other fighters? But he's using his brain, not his brawn, in this fight. Lornak grabs hold of him. Normally, of course, this would provoke, but Serk's guisarme doesn't reach the square right next to him. Lornak successfully grabs him!

Asteria managed to tag Ihintza as she fled by, and now the barbarian has successfully hit Sweet Lily!

Hmerrin missed Ihintza as she went by, but he does not miss Tusia. The monk looks startled for a moment, then drops unconscious.

Tusia is down. I'll remove her figure from the map to avoid confusion.

Dušan gives up the spells and shoots Basjur instead. The half-orc grunts in pain. [OOC: If you shoot into melee, you take a -4 penalty if you don't have the Precise Shot feet. Basjur, of course, is standing in the clear.]

Alizar steps up an heals Asteria.

Serk attempts to break Lorank's grapple, and succeeds with a natural 20! He moves back and regroups.

Basjur fires back at Dušan, hitting both times! And rolling 1s for damage both times! Dušan takes 6 measly points of nonlethal damage, and Basjur hangs his head in shame.

Sweet Lily takes another stab at Asteria, and misses for once.

Bug and Ihintza continue to cower.

Sirpa shoots a ray at Hmerrin. It hits! Hmerrin takes 2 poins of cold damage.

Although his hands are shaking, Kaelich manages to fire two shots at Wilford. Only one of them hits, but it hits pretty hard. Wilford takes 12 points of nonlethal damage.

Seeing Wilford's injuries, Alizar stepped to his left and crossed the battlefield, using his friends to shield him from enemies as he moved. Thankfully, he was just able to make it to the injured human and lay hands on him. Lornak feels Serk leave his grip. A second ago he thought for sure that he had leverage on the man. His body screamed to subdue him. As Serk breaks away it takes all of Lornak's self control not to bull rush him.

Lornak watches Serk regroup and decides it prudent for him to do the same. It will do no one any good if he loses his head in this fight even if his energies were spent beating the fighter into submission. Lornak takes a move action to gather up his weapons and uses Total Defense as his standard action.

Var charges Sweet Lily, which doesn't go quite as well as he was hoping.

Toston is still frightened.

Alizar heals Wilford.

Lornak picks up his dropped weapons and assumes a defensive stance.

Dušan embiggens Asteria. Yay, math!

Hmerrin moves up to attack Serk, and gives the fighter the first damage he's received the entire fight.

Serk steps back and tries to trip Hmerrin, but does not succeed.

Basjur fires two shots at Lornak, which would have hit if he wasn't using Total Defense.

Sweet Lily steps out of flank and tries to stab Var, but fails spectacularly.

Bug realizes he ain't afraid of no ghosts, and moves up to attack Hmerrin. He hits! Hmerrin takes 10 points of nonlethal damage.

Ihintza continues to cower in fear.

Sirpa shoots a ray at Hmerrin, but it poofs harmlessly into the floor near his feet.

Kaelich fires twice at--well, it's hard to say, really. He doesn't hit anybody, that's for sure.

The shot strikes Wil hard and he falls to his knees. He sees a blur approach him then feels the energy. His vision clears and he fires but again it goes astray.. (7: 3) "That's it I'm done." Wil drops the bow and begins to dig through. He pulls out several jars of oil and begins to prepare them.
"I'm done with non-lethal."

A wave of healing goes over the barbarian, and Asteria turns to wink at Alizar for his help. Then, almost out of nowhere, the barbarian feels herself grow in size. It's rather startling at first, and when the barbarian swings at Sweet Lily once more in hopes of finishing her off, she misses the nimble halfling. Better luck next time, after she got used to this new size.

Wilford begins pulling out jars of oil to get dangerous, but in the end cooler head prevail. He draws out a tanglefoot bag instead.

Big Asteria attacks Lily, but even her enhanced size can't make up for the poor quality of the swing.

Toston attempts to flee until the end of the round, at which point he stops and wonders what was so scary.

Var takes a swipe at Lily, and connects. Down she goes.

Sweet Lily is down. I'll remove her token to avoid confusion.

Lornak shoots at Basjur, and hits. The half-orc snarls.

Hmerrin and Serk are locked in the dance of the 5-foot steps. But Hmerrin's blow was no better than his opponent's.

Dušan casts another spell, and Bug stops, blinking. Then he turns and swings his guisarme at Sirpa! He misses, and Sirpa shrieks.

Alizar steps up to deliver some healing to Var.

Serk steps back, but does not target Hmerrin. Instead, he swings his guisarme at Bug, knocking the lad off his feet. "Get away from him!" he tells Sirpa. "He's not in his right mind."

"I hate this!" Sirpa yells. Abandoning her spells, she rushes at Hmerrin, claws extended. Yup, those are claws, all right. They make an annoying screech as they scratch against Hmerrin's armor. Sirpa still looks like a human girl, except she now has sharp black claws where she used to have fingers.

Ihintza has realized that she's not scared, but she needs the full round to get back into position.

Basjur fires two shots at Lornak. One hits! Lornak takes 4 points of nonlethal damage.

Toston moves up and renews his Shield spell. He takes a look at Sirpa's claws. It's difficult to see in the swirling melee, but you don't think they're quite the same as yours. They look a little more....demon-y.

Var moves up to Serk, which does indeed provoke. Var is hit for 7 points of nonlethal damage! His own attack, unfortunately, misses.

Alizar heals Hmerrin.

Wilford fires another shot, but it goes wide.

Dušan makes himself smaller.

Lornak fires again at Basjur. He hits, and the half-orc is looking seriously hurt.

Hmerrin gives Sirpa a pretty solid hit, and she starts to cry.

Asteria adds a blow of her own to knock the girl unconscious.

Sirpa is down.

"Domi's sake, take it easy!" Serk says. "She's just a kid!" He attempts to disarm Hmerrin, and succeeds! Hmerrin's axe falls to the floor!

Basjur fires twice at Lornak, and hits once. Lornak takes 10 points of nonlethal damage.

Bug scrambles to his feet, still Confused. This round, he will attack the nearest target, which is the conveniently-enlarged Asteria. He hits! Asteria takes 10 points of nonlethal damage.

Ihintza 5-foots up to try her own attack on Asteria, but misses.

Kaelich switches targets, and fires two shots at Var. Both hit! Var takes 17 points of nonlethal damage.

Serk's guisarme catches Var in the abdomen, drawing a painful gasp from the half-orc, moments later, before Var can recover his footing Kaelich's blunted arrows strike Var in the head. For someone of a more frail race, this sort of hit would have laid them out on the floor, unconscious. For Var and his Orcish heritage however, he's able to continue fighting, a fact that he begrudgingly acknowledges. (Orc Ferocity: 1/day remain conscious for a round at 0 HP)

With the Wand of Cure Light Wounds in his off hand he aims it at himself and his vision begins to clear. (+6 HP)

Lornak is slightly dazed by the arrows that strike his head and chest. Though the archer looks a little worse for wear Lornak thinks that maybe he himself won't be too far behind... He shakes head to focus himself and the only think he can this is: "...20% of our compliment are youths..."

Determined to knock out the archer he hastily loads a bolt into his crossbow with shaky hands (Move Action) a looses a desperate shot it at Basjur. (Attack Action d20=26, 4 dmg). He hopes that he can stand long enough to lend aid to hi companions.

Then Serk's weapon rips the handaxe from his grasp.
It clatters to the ground.
Hmerrin looks at the axe, then at Serk, then the axe, then at Serk.

With a small shrug, the brown maned fighter pulls out a (practice) dagger, steps forward, and slams Serk in the gut.

Var uses his orcish heritage to stay on his feet and heal himself.

Toston re-positions himself.

Lornak, getting a little desperate, fires another shot at Basjur. The half-orc staggers. But he is a half-orc, so he grits his teeth and stays on his feet. Then Dušan's arrow slams into him, and down he goes.

Basjur is down.

Asteria swings at Ihintza, but misses.

Wilford fires another shot at Kaelich, but the guy is wearing a lot of armor for an elf. Wil's shot does not go through.

Deprived of his axe, Hmerrin draws a knife and attacks Serk with that. He hits, and the fighter lets out a grunt of pain.

Alizar heals Asteria.

"BREAK!" For a guy with a raspy voice, Shorry can really belt. Ihintza and Kaelich lower their weapons and step into guarded stances. Bug, of course, is still under the effects of a Confusion spell, but Serk has the presence of mind to trip him again.

Your opponents have stopped fighting, except for Bug, who isn't really in his right mind.

Lornak hears the call for the battle to come to and end. He doesn't believe his ears. His world as of late has been nothing but surprises and he stays ready for anything. (Full Defense). Feeling variously relived, surprised, and disgruntled, you all stop fighting and look around.

Bug, still in the throes of his Confusion spell, continues to act unpredictably for a few more seconds, but then he, too, stops. Serk begins making the rounds, checking on the fallen.

"That was excellent," the human bookie says.

"Quite satisfactory." The Drow woman has her head down, scribbling frantically onto a piece of parchment, and doesn't even look up to make the comment.

"Yes," Shorry says. "Yes, I think we've got a line on it. No need to fight it out here; save it for the Arena, eh?"

The fallen combatants are beginning to stir and rise. Serk and Ihintza approach you, ready to shake hands and congratulate you on your victory. Once they are recovered, Bug and Tusia follow their example. Sirpa, who is even younger than Asteria, is also doing some quality teenage sulking. Lily and Kaelich draw together and begin making low-voiced complaints and commiserations. Basjur stands to one side, looking stoic.

"Payment!" Shorry says. "As agreed." He gestures to a table where several money pouches are lined up. There's one for each of you, and one for each of your opponents. Inside each pouch is 100 gold.

Var shakes hands with any of the combatants that offer their hand, giving them a nod and a "Good game".

He spares a moment to congratulate Asteria, as well, pleased at her ability in combat.

Being somewhat accustomed to fighting for profit, Var takes his payment happily, and waits for the rest of the group to collect their winnings, before deciding what to do with the rest of the day.

"Don't be so down on yourself, kid." Toston says to Sirpa.

"You put on a good showing. Your spells appear to be more effective than mine, and you are still young for your race. Our bloodlines may be a source of contention for those who do not share our heritage. You bear a demonic bloodline do you not? I'll let you in on a little secret," he whispers, "I bear one that is more draconic, and I know that there are people out there who don't like that either."

He shows the girl his claws in a non threatening way before retracting them.

"I know we were on opposite sides of this battle, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends?" He asks.

He then returns to where the odds makers are and says, "I don't suppose any of you have 10 platinum I could exchange for my 100 gold. It is a weight concern." Toston says.

Alizar crossed over to the table and took his bag of money, pleased that nobody on either side was 'permanently damaged'. Slightly concerned with the spells he prepared for the fight, Alizar mentally noted that he needed to be sure he prepared more useful spells for the next fight. Lornak stows his weapons as he sees everyone's posture become more relaxed. He takes a moment to catch his breath,... and balance. As the two parties come together in a spirit of sportsmanship he greets each person accordingly but doesn't say much. He is curious why the Elf was so jumpy. (perception d20=27)

As the groups starts to interact more with the other fighters, he asks if any of them have fought in the arena before. "Well fought. Have any of you settled disputes in the Arena before?" (Sense Motive d20=18)

Lornak gathers his pouch and keeps his senses open for anything out of the ordinary.

Dušan was quite happy where he was. The cold ground dulled the hammering in his head, but he perked up a bit at the mention of money. He shoves himself off the ground and sees the others shaking hands. He halfheartedly pumps his fist in the air and feigns an enthusiastic "Sportsmanship," but when approached he is sincere in returning handshakes and praise. In particular, he says to Bug, "You are a menace with that thing. You had me there for a minute."

You all accept your payment. "Sorry, no platinum," Shorry tells Toston. "Maybe you can get one of your friends to carry it."

Toston also speaks with Sirpa, and asks her whether her sorcery is the demonic kinds. She shrugs. "I dunno," she replies. "Nobody knows. It ain't like we got a magic school in town." She hunches her shoulders. "I wish I could go back to the way I was before."

Lornak tries to figure out why Kaelich is so jumpy. Actually, the elf is more grumpy than jumpy. Lornak isn't able to pinpoint a specific source, though the elf doesn't seem to like Basjur very much. Maybe he's always like this.

Lornak also asks his opponents if any of them have fought in the Arena, but none of them have.

Bug grins back at Dušan. "Thanks," he says. "I'm gonna keep working hard at it. Maybe I'll get good enough to get outta Dirt City."

Asteria is just looking for some downtime now that her rage has worn off.

You make your way back to Marsh House, where you can rest, recuperate, and discuss strategy.

Before heading back to the Marsh House Toston says to Sirpa, "I don't think it is possible to go back, at least I never heard of that. Would you like me to potentially find you a tutor or magic school you could go to? The latter would probably mean you would have to leave Dirt City, but they would probably have more resources, the former would mean you could stay here, but they may not be the best."

After the team reaches the Marsh House, Toston says, "In the battle with the House of Silver we should probably choose targets early and have everyone focus on those targets first."

Var overhears Toston speaking with Sirpa, and once the gnome has finished their talk, Var speaks quietly with him. "Look... I don't want to run into her in the streets a year from now, and have to put an axe thru her skull 'cuz she's runnin' with a bad crowd and usin' her talent to hurt people. If'n you need money to get her out of the city and into a school or somethin'... well, you let me know."

Back at the Marsh House, Var nurses his bruises and converses with the group. "Izn't 'Kill the Wizard First' a saying? s'probably a good idea. That little girl was dangerous enough as it was, an' I get the feeling that Reakos is gonna be ready for us this time around."

Once back at Marsh House, Alizar joined the conversation. "I agree with Var and Toston. We got lucky during that practice fight, but we were too disorganized from the beginning. They will certainly have some powerful casters, they should be made primary targets, as well as artillery. I will prepare some spells tonight that may aid us, outside of my usual healing measures, but I will need to do some research on what might best help us. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I may better help in combat, I am always prepared to adjust methods."

"Listen, those archers initially hurt us badly. Unfortunately, my skills with the crossbow are suddenly suspect but my point is.. What are we going to do if Silver has archers. I would be willing to keep them at bay with my speed and stealth but we need a plan. We have some extra cash. What could I purchase to help us contain the archers? Once I distracted the single archer we began to kick som... Is that food I smell, or am I just dreaming?"

Lornak is grateful to be at Marsh House. Every joint ached. He almost wished he had gotten knocked unconscious in the exhibition fight... Almost.

He joins the planning conversation; "Well, I could try my hand at the front lines. My Swordbreaker dagger came in handy, even if my opponent was better outfitted for the job. Reakos's boys may not be." Lornak pauses. "What would do me best in that situation would be if I had a buckler on my crossbow arm. I can toss bolts in melee and then have shielding from bladework if I get into it with my rapier even though I'm not as proficient with it as I am with the crossbow."

Feeling a rush of fatigue grip him he leaves the conversation. He looks forward to having a day to rest.

As he heads to his room he finds himself grateful to have some coin. Having wasted the Silversheen in the alley on the day The Knives came down on them still irritated him. Now he can be prepped for the battle once again. He has a mind to make some tanglefoot bags in the mean time as well and join Dusan in the Alchemical cove. After getting tied up with Serk today he sees some new strategies that he wants to plan for. He will join Dusan when he can.

You make your way back to Marsh House, and begin your discussion of tactics in earnest.

A few hours after you return, there is a knock at the door of Marsh House. You open it to find a young halfling who thrusts a folded piece of paper at you. "I'm to wait for a reply," she says.

The note is from Boggs; many of you have seen his handwriting before and can confirm that he wrote the note. It says:

Nightblade contacted me; wants to meet with you. Didn't give specifics, but says he has a proposition for you. Should I set up a meet? --B

Nightblade, you recall, is the masked man from the House of Darts, whom you spoke with in your last adventure.

"I absolutely do not trust that "the System" will ensure us a fair fight against the House of Silver." He takes on an even more somber tone. Lornak leaves the group and heads to his room. He lays down his gear and falls unconscious.

"Course, they'll probably be a completely different kind of trrouble. An' we'll have planned for the wrong thing."

The young man considers. "Now, what would really be interesting is if we went and found out what the odds on us are now. Give us an idea of what those experts think."

The note from Boggs comes, and Hmerrin grins. "Sounds fun! Just lets not get beat up this time, OK?"
