The Angry Mob

You and Nightblade take courteous leave of one another. He and his "security" leave the tavern, with your group just a step behind.

You step out into the street--and boy, are there ever a lot of people here! And...they all kind of stop and look at you when you come out.

"There! In the mask!" somebody shouts. "That's one of them!"

"Get them!" calls another voice.

And the crowd converges. You hear cries of "Down with the Darts!" as they approach.

These are not hired thugs or cutthroats. These are ordinary citizens of Dirt City, frightened and angry and determined to put an end to what they see as a threat. Of course, it won't matter what their intentions are if they trample you to death....

[OOC: This is going to be a kind of unusual combat. I'm going to try to do it without a map. Your opponent is a mob, which we're going to treat as a single opponent, like a swarm.]

Var's mind reels with conflicting instincts. He reaches for his axes as self-defense first enters his mind, but he hesitates, since these are just scared, innocent civilians. Var looks to Alizar and Toston in a panic and says "What do we do!?"

Wil sets his backpack down and pulls out the jars of oil. He attempts to hand out the five jars.
"Set these off in front of the crowd. Hopefully, we can stop the charge. Toss it in front of the crowd, close enough to scare but less than lethal. If that doesn't work I could obscure the crowd with a mist. I don't want to cause any harm."
(OOC: If the team objects to tossing the jars we could also pour the oil and light it. That would take out the splash damage I imagine.)

Lornak puts his hand on the hilt of his swordbreaker dagger ready to sunder a weapon or disarm an opponent should one attack him. He quickly tests his knowledge of Dockside. (Knowledge{local} d20=19) "We are in Dockside, lay down mist and let's find a storehouse to hide in?!" Lornak then looks around to see what the options are. (Perception d20=27) He then thinks to himself. "If not that, then the rooftops perhaps?..."

Alizar's satisfaction with how the discussion went was short lived. Of the many things that can kill you in this city, a mob of ordinary citizens was not how he wanted to go. Quickly, he tried to get a count of the number of people. (Perception: 8), but it was really hard in the rush of the crowd.
He turned to Wilford as he produced the Jars, "I think setting fire to the city might be in the 'last resort' category, but hold that thought. "
Alizar, took a deep breath, and channeled the positive powers of the divine. He found the perfect spot in the front of the crowd, released his will, and cast 'Calm Emotions' so that it placed itself within the first 20 foot radius of charging people, in the hope that it would calm as many of the townsfolk as possible, and if not all of them, then the sudden calm and confusion of the front 20 feet might slow any one behind them and give the group a chance to escape!

"I say we make ourselves 'scarce' gentlemen."

"You gotta be kidding me," he mutters fearfully.

Wil passes out jars, and the young man takes two. But it looks like the plan is mist and run, so Hmerrin scurries after Alizar.

"Yes, Let's try to the crowd calm for now, shall we?" Dušan nods to Alizar and prepares his own Calm Emotion spell in case Alizar's does not encompass the crowd or if they follow.

Talanthrel pauses for a moment to try to spot who started this impromptu mob. And then takes off after the others, moving up beside Toston, a quick glance assures him that his shorter friend is keeping up. Looking around Talnathrel searches for a narrow alley or choke point some place that they can block off and allow them to separate from the following mob.

As the mob approaches, Alizar steps up and casts a Calm Emotions spell. Some in the crowd stop and look about them, puzzled, but others swarm past them.

Toston casts a spell on himself, and Wilford pass out flasks of oil. Hmerrin takes two. [OOC: oil does not spontaneously ignite. You want alchemists's fire for that. Plain oil needs to be lit on fire by some kind of fire source.]

You all try to retreat, but that's easier said than done. The building is behind you; the mob is in front of you. You are able to open up some space between you and the mob, which means that they go after Nighblade and his companions. Masked Nightblade goes down; one of the bodyguards cries out and seems to stumble. The other starts laying into the crowd with his fists.

Lornak knows that Dockside brawls are not uncommon, but there's something off about this one.

Var checks the crowd, trying to gauge the situation as best he can (Perception: 15), but all he can see are is the roiling, surging mass of angry people. He snarls and gives the mob a growl, (Intimidate: 9) but it's like yelling at the wind. Var pulls a handaxe, and with the blunt end of it, tries to swat at some of the assailants attacking Nightblade as gingerly as possible while still being discouraging (Non-Lethal Attack: 4 vs AC); but perhaps he was being *too* gentle.

Lornak's eyes dart around the mob as he backs up, his hand still on his dagger's hilt. He knows Dockside can be a roudy place but something is very wrong here. "Uh guys, I don't think is an ordinary mob..." He makes an effort to figure out what is amiss (Perception d20=8) when his concentration is broken as something flies at him from the crowd. He dodges it easily but as it splatters against the wall of the building behind him he wonders; "Was that Boiled Cows Stomach?"

Toston attempts to point out the people at the edge of the mob egging it on to his friends, "At the edge of the mob there are people who are causing the down with Darts chant, they don't appear to be part of this"

He then rushes to Nightblade's aid. He stands between the angry mob and the Dart representative.

"We think the dart's are being framed for what happened with the Aisulduran's!!! Please don't be so hasty and do something you can't take back" Toston pleads with them.

Action summary:

Wil moves to within 5 feet of the crowd and Obscuring mist begins to bellow from his cloak. He prepares to battle any of the mob surrounding Nightblade. "We need to get the Darts to safety. We can then fight off the mob."
Wil stands ready with his new crude staff to hold the mob back.

While his calming spell worked, the crowd seemed to be too large for it to have any definite effects. "I never thought we would need to be protecting The Darts", Alizar said, mostly to himself. He shifted a bit to get a better look at the people Toston was shouting about. (Perception 11) but he could not get a good enough look. He calmed his mind however, and tried to detect if the crowd was being magically influenced in any way. (Detect Magic)

Dušan attempts to locate the agitators that Toston points out (Perception D20+2=18) a manages to locate them on the fringes of the crowd. Finding them he attempts to cast Sleep non as many of them as possible (Radius 10', up to 4 HD Targets, Will vs 14 Negates) while tries to remember if the Blue Eel has a back door (Knowledge Local D20+6=13).

All Hmerrin sees is a mess of people intending to beat him senseless.

Seeing Toston go for Nightblade, Hmerrin goes after him, The young man's plan is to grab the masked man, throw him over a shoulder, and get away by whatever means his buddies magically come up with.

But, he's not a afraid to throw a punch to get to the man.

Talanthrel using the mist for cover, Makes his way over where the agitators Dušan had cast sleep on had, hopefully fallen. Searching for someone to interrogate. Talanthrel is very displeased with them inciting a mob and then pointing it at his group.

If Talanthrel finds an sleeping agitator he will tie them up, then wrap him up in his cloak and try to sneak out of the mob with his prisoner.

Var attempts to intimidate the mob, and then he attemts to thwack them. Neither attemt is notably successful.

Lornak dodges a missle from the crowd and tries to re-position himself.

Toston moves to defend Nightblade while begging the mob to reconsider.

Wilford casts Obscuring Mist, so now it's hard to see what's going on.

Alizar casts Detect Magic, but sees no auras other than the ones he already knows about.

Dušan casts a Sleep spell. He can't get all the agitators, but he is able to get a couple, and a part of the mob as well. You're pretty sure the Blue Eel has a back door, but you're not sure where it is.

Hmerrin reaches Nightblade's side and throws a punch.

Talanthrel attempts to hide in the mist and slip through the crowd. You are largely successful, but it's going to take you another round at least to reach the sleeping agitators.

The mob has taken a few knocks, but they are still enraged and still swarming you and the Darts. Talanthrel has managed to slip out, but everyone else takes 7 points of nonlethal damage. Everybody but Talanthrel and Hmerrin is grappled!

Toston focuses his magical abilty into his body (arcane strike = swift action)

Toston lashes out with a strike aimed to do subdual damage at the person holding him. He makes this a stunning fist attempt.

18 vs AC at person holding Toston; if hits 2 nonlethal damage and person must make a fort save DC 14 or be stunned (this would mean dropping held items so this would conceivably ungrapple Toston)

The mob tugs on Wil's staff. Wil fights back using Blind-Fight. He also manages to find the Eyes of the Eagle and uses the extra perception to find a way out.

"Fight for your life Wilford." The young man appears within the mist then disappears. "Come on man, what's wrong with you."
"Now is not the time," Wil shouts as he pushes and pulls the staff.

Alizar bucked and jerked under the force of the mobs blows. He knew he had to cast something fast, as his physical attacks would prove useless against the crowd. Concentrating (Roll 21 Vs DC 10+Grappler CBD +2), he centered 'Calm Emotions' on himself to drive the mob out of their fury. As they dissipate, Alizar searched for the first safe spot in the mist he could move to, and dashed there. If he can spot where Toston moved to, he heads there.

(o.c.c. Sorry to not be more specific, but I don't really know how big this crowd at the moment, or where they, or any one is in relation to myself. Basically just looking to follow Toston towards the troubles source)

Dušan buckles under the force of the crowd. He would like to cast another sleep spell, but would like it to be as useful as possible. He looks for a way to catch two or more of the agitators.

(If Dušan can't target 2 more of the agitators he'll help one of the fallen Darts back into the inn)

Fearing he will be caught in the middle of the crowd, Dušan attempts to get back into the inn, through the window if necessary. "There's a back door to Blue Eel. Maybe we can get our new contacts out that way?"

Lornak loses sight of everyone around him as a familiar mist flourishes around him. His eyes search for a way to increase the distance between him and the encroaching mob. As the light dims he feels a multitude of hands grab his person. In his mind he shouts; "This is bad!" He tries to break free and is miserably unsuccessful. (Attack for combat maneuver vs CMD d20=7) Desperately, he strains again to twist out of the mobs deadly grip and fails once more. (Second attack for CM vs CMD d20=11) He loses hope when he realizes that he may have to resort to more martial means of survival

(OOC I'm using the numbers for combat maneuvers to get lornak out of a grapple. I don't know if this is correct but have no modifiers for CMB vs. The mobs CMD)

Talanthrel scowls, sneaking through the mob took more time then he expected. And while he was no longer surrounded he was only halfway to his goal. The sound of the mob dogpiling the others drifts through the mist, with a shake of his head he gives up on his current goal, it sounds like it is time for a distraction.
Drawing a deep breath he leaps to his feet and shouts at the top of his lungs. "THE KNIVES! THE KNIVES ARE COMING! EVERYBODY RUN FOT IT! IT'S THE KNIVES! RUN!" Panting for breath he drops back down into a crouch hoping the mist will keep anyone from spotting him.

Toston lands a punch, although it doesn't cause anybody to become dazed.

Var is less successful.

Wilford manages to land a blow with his staff.

Alizar attempts to cast a spell. [OOC: Did you have two Calm Emotions prepared?]

Dušan attempts to move back to the inn, but he is grappled so he makes little progress.

Talanthrel cries out that the Knives are coming. It's not his best bluff ever, but under the circumstances it's pretty effective.

The mob is beginning to break up, but their surging mass is still a danger. Everybody in the mob (that is, everbody but Talanthrel) takes 8 points of nonlethal damage. The mob lets go; you are no longer grappled.

[Wilford has discovered that the mob's AC is no higher than 13. :) ]

Dušan concentrates the sleep spell, but the Wold's Blood flees from him leaving him unable to cast the spell.

Just as Lornak is about to give up his restriant and unsheath his blade he hear's a shout. The voice is muffled by the hands clawing about his head and face. He thought he heard somethings about Knives. He realizes he isn't the only one. The hands that had him in an iron grip lose pressure enough to let him loose. Realizing he is free he immediately uses the mist to conceal himself and move toward his companions. (Stealth d20=6). The mob were on the group so fast to be natural, Lornak is keen on finding who might be pushing them. (Perception d20=16).

Var continues shouting and throwing elbows at the mob as they assault him (Attack 16 vs AC; 6 non-lethal), missing Talanthrel's bluff about the Knives. He's somewhat shocked when the angry mob begins to rapidly disperse. He stands in a defense pose for a moment, convinced another attack is about to come. When that attack doesn't come he takes in the scene around him, adrenaline feeding into his already keen senses (Perception: 30... oh, so NOW you roll high!).

"Sweep them off there feet," the boy appears in front of him obscured a bit by the mist. Wil stares at a couple of the mob members as they pause to digest what they are hearing.
"They are going to leave," Wil says.
"You don't know that. They could attack you again and I've heard you haven't much luck with fighting."
"Oh really, and how told you that."
The boy pointed at the feet of the couple standing in front of him. Wil swept at both the members feet then made his way through the mist.

Battered and bruised, Alizar is surprised when the mob begins to break up. He channels as much positive energy as he can muster, centres the burst on himself, and releases it.

He then moves as fast as he can safely manage to where Tal is yelling.

Hearing the mob start to breakup from his crouched position in the mist, Talanthrel resumes moving towards his original target. Shaking his head at the fact that it worked. He is now sure that the average intelligence in a mob drops equal to the number of people in it.

Grateful that the crowd seems to be letting up, Dušan goes to help Toston with the Darts. He casts Stabilize on any of the darts that needs it, starting with Nightblade. "If anyone can see through this mist we might try to gather at least one of the agitators I put to sleep."

(OOC: Sorry I forgot about the grapple. I tried to fix it, but didn't post in time. I'll keep the waisted spell as lesson toward my mistakes.)

He's also pretty certain that he'd be happy as a woodpecker at a cedar farm if the Knives were coming.

Grabbing up one of Nightblade's shoulders, he pushes himself toward the side of the throng.

The mob continues to run. They're not trying to hurt you, but they still shove and jostle. Everybody in the mob takes another 2 points of nonlethal damage.

Some of you move to help the Darts. Nightblade was knocked down, but not out; he is rising to your feet as you arrive. All three, like you, are bumped and bruised, but not seriously injured.

Talantrhel continues moving toward the sleeping agitators.

"Oh Hells" Var says, surveying the chaos, "The Knives really ARE coming! Make yourselves scarce, men!"

Lornak recovers from the pressing throng long enough to catch his breath. He wants to straighten his tunic but knows he has little time for comfort. Clearing hair from his eyes he sees a contingent of Knives fastly approaching.(perception d20=14) Working his way through the crowd toward Var he does his best to not draw attention to himself.(stealth D20=20) He wishes he melted into the shadows at the first sign of trouble. "Being suffocated by frenzied mob of innocents is no way for any self respecting rogue to die." He thinks to himself.

The crowd starts breaking up, and Hmerrin tastes salt. The young man gingerly touches his hand to his face, winces, and pulls it away. Blood.
"Um, Ow," he comments, spitting out another glob of blood from a busted lip.

And then he sees the Knives [Perception 21]
Judging by the general reaction, the fighter figures these fellows aren't much like the sheriff back home. He stumbles off after Talanthrel.

Many of you spot the Knives approaching, but there is some disagreement on what to do about it. Var and Lornak move to make themselves scarce. Hmerrin follows, considerably less stealthy. Toston, somewhat the worse for wear after being trampled, requests some assistance, which Alizar is happy to provide. Wilford, meanwhile, recommends hiding until the Knives are gone.

"Thanks for the help," Nightblade says, dabbing some blood from the corner of his lip. "I hope this shows the Darts weren't responsible for the deaths in the Marketplace. Somebody is setting us up to take the fall." With that, he and his security leave the area.

There is still a lot of chaos outside the tavern. You are basically in three groups: Hmerrin, Var, and Lornak following Talanthrel; Tostan, Alizar, and (presumably) Dušan still near the tavern entrance; Wilford finding himself a hiding place.

Chaos surrounds Lornak. With the entrance of the Knives on the scene everyone is vacating the area, and fast. He hears Dusan suggest the backside of the Eel as a good place to make an exit and has to agree with him. He looks toward Var and realizes there is not enough time to hunt down and confront the agitators. Lornak curses under his breath. He then turns toward the Blue Eel to join Toston, Alizar, and Dusan. He makes haste and blends in as well as he can. (Stealth d20=23)

Wilford's idea to hang around and gather Intel is a good one, but Alizar is not the most stealthy of the group, and a big group would attract more attention. Hopefully Wilford can gather the information they needed. Alizar turns to Lornak, "Perhaps you would have better luck blending into the surroundings with Wilford? We can meet up later"
Alizar quietly channels positive energy to all those around him. (Channel positive energy: +6 hp to everyone in 20 feet), then continues into the tavern towards the back door, and hopefully, safety from the Knives.

Talanthrel looks, but making off with a prisoner at this point would be extremely risky. His hasty search turns up nothing unusual in the agitator's possession (thieves' tools not counting as "unusual" for Dirt City purposes). Hmerrin arrives to help, but carrying off the agitator would be a pretty bold move at this point.

Dušan goes back into the tavern, hoping to slip out the back door. Alizar follows him, and Lornak moves in that direction.

Toston elects to stay out on the street and try to get information. He and Wilford try to find hiding places, with varying degrees of success. [OOC: I need a Stealth check from Wilford if you're going to try to hide.]

The Knives enter the street. They are breaking up what remains of the mob, and they aren't being gentle about it. Talanthrel and Hmerrin are almost directly in the line of approach. If they want to ensure avoiding the Knives, they need to move.

Inside the Blue Eel is all but deserted. The barkeep looks over at Alizar and Dušan's disheveled appearance, rolls his eyes, and jerks his thumb at a door in the opposite wall. Presumably, that is the way out. Lornak is just a step outside the tavern.

Lornak discretely enters the Blue Eel and casually closes the door behind him. Glancing through the window he hears Dusan speak to the barkeep and head to the back door. He enters the main room and follows his companion. As he passes the proprietor he too flips him a coin and says. "What he said."

Out in the street, Talanthrel, Var, and Hmerrin get themselves out of sight and away from the scene as quickly as possible. You're not sure whether the Knives saw you, but at the moment they seem more interested in pummeling any "rioters" they catch than in actually arresting everybody. You think you are probably in the clear.

Nearby, Toston and Wilford hide themselves to watch the scene. It's chaotic. The former mob is scrambling to get out, and the Knives are laying into anybody who moves too slowly. They dispense cuffs and kicks, they shout threats, and a few of them brandish their truncheons. They may or may not arrest anybody who lingers, but right now the crowd is fleeing.

Dušan thinks to buy a little goodwill from the barkeep, and slips out the back along with Alizar and Lornak. In the alley, you stop to regroup. It is much quieter back here. You see a few people hurrying away; they may have come out the back door ahead of you, or they may just have been out in the neighborhood when the ruckus started. At any rate, you have the alley to yourselves.

Toston watches The Knives breaking up the mob. It doesn't look to him like there is anything to be gained from this exercise save for how the Knives operate. He keeps his eyes and ears open anyway in case anything useful does come up.

He also starts looking for an escape route suitable to his small size should it be necessary to get out of there in a hurry. The gnomes plan is to use his size to his advantage by slipping away via a path that would be difficult for the bulky Knives to follow.

Talanthrel, Var, and Hmerrin are able to circle around and find their companions Lornak, Alizar, and Dušan. Dušan suggests that the group might want to have a set meeting place for situations like this.

Toston and Wilford are still out front, observing the Knives. They have succeeded in breaking up most of the mob, and have now moved on to arresting anybody still in the area.

Two Knives are approaching a man who is trying to get away. He seems to have injured his leg somehow in the fracas; he's hobbling pretty badly and is unable to move very fast. "Troublemaker, eh?" one of the Knives says as they both grab hold of him.

"No--no!" the man says. "Please, I don't want no trouble!"

"Tell it to the magistrate," the other Knife says, and they put him in shackles.

Others are being arrested as well. The Knives pause and look around the area, but luckily don't seem to see Toston or Wilford.

"It ain't right," a disembodied voice says to Wilford. "People hauled off and made to fight in the Arena. That's how I died. Buncha bullies and thugs, that's all they are."

Var shrugs at Dusan's suggestion "Can always meet back up at the Marsh House if we get separated." Var seems lost in thought as he listens to the Knives work their way through the last of the riot (Perception: 20). "Did it seem to anyone else like they showed up pretty quickly? I mean, when an assassination attempt was made in a public square, halfway between the Prince's Castle and the Knives tower, they're nowhere to be seen; but a small riot in Dockside and they're there in force within a few minutes?"

"I say we go talk to Waverly, next. If anything, we might convince him to tell people that it ain't the Darts that they should be mad at. After that, we hunt Kerner. What do you say, lads?"

Lornak is glad to see the familiar faces of his companions when he exits the Blue Eel. He can hear the melee as the Knives knock heads from his place in the alley. "I think that is a terrible idea my friend." Answering Var's comment concerning Marsh House. "Why volunteer the location of our home and base of operations? We indeed need a bolthole somewhere else in the city." Lornak scopes out the alley. (Perception d20=10) The group has a temporary reprieve from scrutiny but that could be broken by any random passersby. "Though, you raise and interesting question about the convenience, or lack thereof, of the Knive's showing up. Also, I'm all for any mission so long as its far away from here..."

Toston wants to do something to aid the poor man, but he knows that he can't fight all the Knives himself.

Perhaps if my dragon heritage was more fully realized I'd have a chance he thinks.

Toston looks for an alley or corner close to where they currently are now within 30 feet of himself but a little blind to the guards. (Perception: 26)

Assuming he finds this he uses his ghost sound SLA to create the sounds of twelve men looting. (OOC: You can produce as much noise as four normal humans per caster level. Thus, talking, singing, shouting, walking, marching, or running sounds can be created.) Toston tries to make the looting sounds include running, shouting, singing and the sound of fire and breaking glass. (Will: 12 disbelief)

Toston is hoping the Knives will be distracted by the noise and if they go to investigate he will break cover to try to give the injured man one of his cure light wounds potions (9 hp) and help the injured man into the Blue Eel. If they don't all go to investigate he will use his dancing lights SLA to create one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape 40 feet out (in the opposite direction of the ghost sound) and hope the rest go to check out the glowing figure. If they do he directs the lights to move 90 feet out and stop as that is the range of his ability and then proceeds to give the man the potion(9 hp; see above) and help him into the Blue Eel (assuming all the Knives are currently preoccupied).

"We probably should not hang around here, but I don't really want to leave Wil and Toston, but unless we want to take on The Knives out there, there is not a lot we can do at the moment. Unless you all ACTUALLY want to take on The Knives..."

Behind the Blue Eel, the group talks about a possible meeting place. Var suggests Marsh House, but Lornak points out that enemies could follow you there. He says you need a bolthole. You do know the locations and passcodes for several safehouses in the city, maintained by the Crescent Moons Trading Company. They make good places to hide out, but they would make poor places to meet up. Dušan suggests that hanging around an alley is probably not the best approach, and begins strolling casually away.

Meanwhile out front, Wilford is communing with the spirit world. "Naw," the disembodied voice says. "The Knives aren't heading for the arena. They'll take 'em to lockup, then the judge'll send 'em to the arena. At least, that's the way it was with us." Wilford tries to climb, but isn't able to find purchase on the wall of the building, so remains on the ground.

Meanwhile, Toston sets off a distraction nearby. Most of the Knives move to check it out, leaving one man behind to guard their shackled prisoner. The prisoner doesn't seem interested in going anywhere, and in fact sits down on the ground while awaiting the return of the rest of the squad.

And finally, to Dusan, he says "If we're going lets not go too far, I'm sure Toston can take care of himself if things go south...but I worry about that boy Will."
(OoC: Var is willing to go as far as a major intersection where the Knives are no longer arresting people, where the group can see a little of whats going on without being as conspicuous as hiding in an alley.)

As the group discusses future meet up points Lornak hears what sounds like shouting and looting. He travels with the group but makes sure to move in a direction away from those sounds. "You must take me to this tavern you speak of, my only hope is that its seedy and treacherous." Lornak says blithely. Lornak then gets into character and moves cautiously. Alizar only partly hears Var's response, as he releases his built up will and lets healing energies engulf himself and the group. (+6 HP to group) Alizar followed the group to the next intersection, but got some distance from the others to try avoid looking too conspicuous. He was a bit unsure what the next step in the plan would be, but he would certainly keep the healing power flowing, whatever it would be.

Toston breaks cover and approaches the lone knife guarding the injured man. He has 10 gold in his right hand and he is displaying this while speaking.

"Mr. Knife, sir. I understand that the man in manacles has broken the law, but I know that sometimes a fine is what is required to be payed to make restitution. If I payed you a fine of 10 gold coins, could you release that man to me? I promise I will make sure he gets home without causing any further trouble. I was just figuring this may be better for all of us as it cuts down on hassle and who wants to go through hassle? You probably have some paper work you'd have to do if you keep this man as your prisoner, but if you accept the fine then there is no paperwork and you can see that the money goes to its proper place."

Dušan agrees with Var about not going too far and stops at the first intersection with a view of the Blue Eel. "Sounds as good as any other place to meet in a pinch. Looks like Toston is trying to make friendly with a Knife. Anyone see Wil?"

Toston's spell is having unintended consequences, as his companions are also taken in by the sound. Luckily, they decide to move away from it, rather than toward it, or things would get very interesting.

Toston and Wilford (in disguise) both approach the shackled prisoner. Toston thinks to offer a fine. The Knife looks skeptical, then speculative. "Yeah, but what'll I tell the Sergeant?" he says. "He told me to guard the prisoner. What am I gonna say when he comes back and the prisoner's gone?"

His eyes, however, are on the gold in Toston's hand.

[Wilford, are you going to try to pass yourself off as a Knife when there's a real Knife standing right there? Because if you are, I'm going to need a Disguise check.]

"If your supervisor needs more convincing I can add a 5 gold administration fee." Toston says to the guard getting 5 gold in his left hand.

"However, if that is not good enough I am trained in the martial arts. I could knock you out without doing permanent damage and you could say you were overrun."

If the guard takes the bribe and releases the man Toston will go about giving him the potion (+9 hp; see above) and escort him to the Blue Eel.

Bewildered, the Knife looks back and forth between Toston and Wilford. "You ain't in my squad," he tells Wilford. He gestures to the prisoner. "Look, I get it. If the guy's connected, just say he's connected. No need for all of this fancy business. I will take that, though." He relieves Toston of the proffered bribe.

"And I'm gonna need my keys back," he tells Wilford. Calmly, he unshackles the prisoner and walks away.

For his part, the prisoner has been looking more and more apprehensive as the transaction went on. "I--I thank you," he stammers, "but I ain't got no way to pay you fellows back. At least, not right away. But I'm happy to make arrangements."

Meanwhile, the squad of Knives, having realized there are not actual rioting looters down the alley, begin making their way back toward the Blue Eel.

Var lets out a breath that he hadn't realized he was holding. As foolish as it may have been, he's pleased to be running with such heroic and clever people. "I'll watch the group here, less chance to raise alarms if just a few go back to collect Toston and Will. Where'd that Drow get off to..." he says, looking around for Lornak. "Oh, there you are, shadow Tal while he runs back to grab our boys."

Lornak is scanning the area when he notices the group peering around the corner relax their body postures. Whatever scheme those two out in the street concocted seemed to have worked. For now. "That's usually when things go awry..." Lornak says under his breath. He must have voiced his opinion a little louder than he thought because Var seemed to find his hiding spot enough to address him directly with exit plans. "I need to make more effort to improve my stealth skills..." He thinks to himself, ashamed. Lornak sticks the walls as he shadows Talanthrel.

"No need to pay us back." Toston says to the freed prisoner.

"Though if you'd like to help us, we'd appreciate it. Do you know anything about those folks at the edge of the riot egging it on? Like where they came from or who they were? Come, lets talk while we walk and get out of here. Did the potion work on your injured leg?"

"Also I meant what I said about escorting you home safe."

Toston looks around to see if anyone is paying interest in them (Perception: 11). If it appears safe and the guard is away Toston flashes the man his WLA pin before tucking it away.

"Wil, any chance you could give us some mist to cover our retreat?" If the freed man is still struggling, Toston says, "Help me with him."

Standing this close to Toston, he hears Dusan's message, and immediately starts directing the stranger in that direction.
"Hi, I'm The Kid, and we're going to be running away now," he informs the man as he steers him by an arm toward Dusan's hidey hole.

As the rest of the group watches carefully, Talanthrel and Lornak, with Hmerrin tagging along behind, go to retrieve Toston and Wil and the freed prisoner.

"Yes, the leg's fine, thank you," the man says, hurrying along next to you. "What people were you talking about? I mean, all I know is I was so mad at them Darts. Killin' them traders and lousin' things up for the city. I mean, what would you do a thing like that for?" He looks down at his torn clothing. "Seems kinda stupid now, a' course, but in the moment...."

Wil tries to get his new ghost friend to talk more about the Arena, but the man is silent for now.

"You don't hafta bring me home," the freed prisoner says. He seems a little nervous in the presence of so many heavily-armed men. "I can make it all right. Thanks again for your help back there."

Talanthrel brings up the rear as Toston and Will rejoins the others. Checking to make sure the returning Knives have not spot them. "Time to get out of here. We're a large enough group that the Knives may just decide we are a riot on our own."

To the rescued man, Var says "I've no love for the Darts... But I don't think the attack on the traders was their fault. Now I don't know who's fault it is just yet, but we're working on it."

To Talanthrel Var says "Agreed." and begins to head in the closest direction to 'away from Dockside'.

Once they've gotten a few blocks away, he addressed the group. "We should probably check in with Boggs real quick, I'm sure he'll hear about the riot soon enough, no sense letting him worry. I still want to talk to Waverly of the Merchant's Guild today, though."

"We noticed that during the riot, there were some people on the outside encouraging the false anti-dart sentiment. We are trying to figure out who is behind it as my companion noted." Toston replies.

"Are you sure you are going to be alright?" Toston asks the man.

"I could just escort you to where you need to go and catch up with my friends later, if you are uncomfortable with the group size."

"If you are sure you can make it alright I'm not going to force you, you can go your separate way." Toston says.

Once the they had regrouped, Alizar gave the rescued man a look, to make sure he did not have any serious injuries, but he seemed OK. Just in case though, Alizar once again concentrated his healing energies, and released his positive energy, healing everyone in the group. (Channel Positive Energy: +4 HP to everyone)

"I agree with Var", Alizar remarked as they left the area. "We can check in with Bogg's and then go talk to the Merchant's Guild. Things seem to be escalating, and I don't like where they are heading"

Thankful that the ruse went well Lornak puts his attention into his surroundings as he travels away from Dockside. (Perception d20=27). He keeps pace with the group but not bunched up with them. A band of armed men coming out of an area recently subject to riot would draw too much attention. He skirts the edge of the streets, sticking to areas that either provide shadow or an opportunity to disappear if the need arises. His thoughts are troubled as he ruminates on the Knive's involvement in Dirt City's recent intrigues. He does not look forward to sharing what news he group has gleaned with Boggs. In his mind he thinks dark days are ahead.
