Picking up the Pieces

DM Kathy
Thursday September 3rd, 2015 11:47:58 PM

[Everyone take 500 XP for the previous scene.]

There are introductions all around, then the man called Jass casts a spell that allows you all to be private.

Some of the Aisildurans, lingering alongside your group, begin to look annoyed that they can't hear what's going on, but there's nothing they can do about it at this point.

The heartseeded woman is among them, looking smug and pleased with herself. It doesn't seem to worry her that one of her colleagues lies dead on the cobbbles.

Nearby, a squad of Knives is questioning bystanders who are exclaiming and pointing excitedly. One of the Knives looks at your group and frowns, but does not approach.

BeeBee says that he and Jass belong to something called the Dragon Consortium. He also shows you a glove which he found placed on the dead man. Knowledge: Local or Knowledge: History DC 13 Highlight to display spoiler: {there’s something about a black-and-purple glove, something specific, but you can’t quite put your finger on what.}

"Koche Marr?" Wil mumbled and thought. His mother interrupted his thought. "It's a land of horrible things. By far the worst things I've seen in my suspension between worlds."
"You have seen Koche Marr?" Wil asks, aiming it as a reply to his mother but accidently speaking out loud.
"I have only heard the stories. Wil, I need to teach you how to pass on spirits to the Lands of Rest. We need not worry about Koche Marr."

"Dragon Consortium? They're kinda like your Adventurer' Leauge, right Toston?" Var says, letting his less-worldly nature show.

"You lot said you have old friends here in Dirt City? How much do you know about the House of Knives? " Var asks the two, if they intone that they're familiar with the City, he follows up by asking "Do you think the Knives would be behind an attack like this?"

"I gather the Aisildurians are not welcome in most places outside of their kingdom, but any thoughts on who might hold a grudge against them?"

Wilford Grimly (HP:15/21; AC: 14; Touch: 12; Flat: 12; CMD: 14)
Friday September 4th, 2015 4:42:46 PM

"The Knives seem to be pretty concerned with the status of the people attacked." He says as he notices several milling around. "We have yet had any issue with them. You would think if they were part of the problem they would have some interest in what we are doing." Wil said to Var. "Just a thought, though."

Lornak Addressees BeeBee "Just so? Were you aware that Surface Drow choose surnames that correspond to a specific House's name?"
Lornak looks away from BeeBee to the wounded delegate. "The Aisildurian woman seems unaffected by her companions death. Heartseed or not, that just seems, cold..." Lornak trails off as he examines the glove. (Knowledge(Local) to display spoiler d20=22)
"There is something familiar about the color combination on that glove that I can't quite place..." Lornak speculates. "A flag or crest...?"

Alizar relaxed a little when the spell went up, he felt like he could be himself a bit more. He looked at the glove Bee Bee had recovered. The purple and black glove stuck in his mind, it seemed familiar.
"I know I have seen the glove before, or at least a glove like it", Alizar added. "Thanks again for the assistance", this time, when Alizar said it, the sincerity was apparent, but it seemed a bit strange juxtaposed to his colder demeanor from a moment before.
"Not to put to fine a point on it, but what, exactly, are you two doing here?"

Dušan considers BeeBee's remark about the Heartseed. "When you say 'there once was a good Heartseed,' does that imply the opposite of the rest? Specifically, do we know anything about the woman with the deputation?"

Dušan nods at Var's question about the Knives. Seems a good possibility to Dušan.

Jass of Downs (SteveK)
Saturday September 5th, 2015 12:09:07 PM

Jass looks out at the audience the group has collected. "We better make this short and leave with a show of disapproval if we don't want our young friends to be the center of suspicion, BeeBee", the living cadaver says.

"I think we are going to keep our mission quiet, just as you are gonna do yours, eh? Loose lips and all that. But I am happy to see there are people that are interested in doing the right thing, even in Dirt City. I think I'll mention that to Valdor the next time the Dragon Consortium meets."

"Just like you try to help those good people who can't help themselves, the Dragon Consortium is a group who believe that our powers come with the responsibility to help. Sometimes that's stopping a street fight or finding a child's lost doll. Sometimes that's fighting a cabal of lichens trying to take over the entire Wold. And while you are young and inexperienced yet, I think we may want to keep an eye on you for the future. Yes, I think so, eh?"

Jass grins at Hmerrin. "Used to be a sorcerer of enchantments, yah know, and then I was killed and became a ghost for a while. When my friends talked to Gargul and he let me come back, I was infused with necrotic magics that nearly drove me insane. But again, my friends have been my anchor to reality. So I may look ugly as sin, but the magics are pretty sweet!"

The sorcerer looks over at the heartseeded delegate. "Heartseeds are a denial of self. It suppresses everything a person is and becomes a puppet for the god Ga'al. Be very careful around them. And I wouldn't call it a 'good' Heartseed, but there used to be ones that didn't make you a complete puppet." Jass shudders. "Not for me."

Talanthrel shudders at the description of the requirements to be a Heartseed. That was a level of fanaticism that even a paladin would balk at. Complete subjugation of self? No! Sir! Not for him!
"Better to die free!" he mutters in agreement.
Talanthrel continues to scan the area for new threats.

"Growing up my father, mother and grandfather were craftsgnomes and merchants. We would move from place to place in the Scab selling the wares my elder family members made. I believe we have been to Stone Festival at least once but it was a while ago before I was of age to be an adventurer. Eventually my family saved enough to buy a small storefront in Plateau City. My grandfather has since went to the Lands of Rest but my parents still reside in Plateau City." Toston says to BeeBee, "I grew up listening to my grandfather's stories while he carved. I've always had a fondness for dragons. In fact I'm sort of related to one. My sorcerer heritage is a gold dragon bloodline. It was an honor to be able to help you today. Who knows maybe at some point in the far future we may be able to work together again?"

To Var Toston says, "The Dragon Consortium is kind of like the WLA except much more exclusive and on a much larger scale. The WLA allows anyone who takes the oath to join and from what I understand about the Dragon Consortium, it is by invitation only and you have to meet certain requirements. I'd have to imagine the kind of threats the Dragon Consortium normally face would be too much for us right now."

To Hmerrin Toston says, "You said it yourself, these guys are in a whole 'nother weight class."

Some of you think that a black-and-purple glove sounds familiar somehow, but you can't quite place why.

Jass tells you more about the Dragon Consortium and what they're all about. He also says he'll mention your group to Valdor Dragonstone himself!

You have a short time in which you could ask Jass and BeeBee more questions if you chose, but as Jass pointed out, it's probably not good for you to seem too chummy with them. It's about time to wrap up your conversation.

Jass takes BeeBee's gesture as a signal, and dismisses the Private Sanctum. Sounds of the street are heard as normal and the conversation can once again be herd by the onlookers.

Jass does a quick wink and his entire demeanor changes to the cold and obsessed sorcerer that he appears to be. "Yes, run along to your little errands, you are of no use to us. We will protect these delegates while they are here at Dirt City."

And the powerful sorcerer turns his back on the group as if dismissing them as inconsequential.

"I'm not going to shoot, mother. I'm playing along."

"Hey, you will pay for that!" Wil shouts. "Keep you hands off my brethren."
Suddenly, Wil jerked the crossbow and fired.
"Stop it!" Wil shouted as he fought with the spirit possession. He knelt and pointed the crossbow down. "Mother, stop, I do not need your help. Please release me," he then said quietly.
"Please forgive me," he mouthed to Jass who was closest to the arrow but far enough away to barely make it a threat.

ACDM SteveK: Jass has DR/5 permanently and flatfoot AC 28. He really isn't worried about anything the CMTC can do to him. :-)

"Let's get out of here lads." Toston yells to his group eager to put distance between him and the two powerful adventurers.

A sneer so cold, so disapproving, so full of contempt, that even some birds in a nearby tree fluttered away in earnest.

Jass drops the Sanctum, and you all fake an argument, with varying degrees of believability. Wilford's gallery of helpers don't quite understand the situation, but the crossbow bolt does no harm and adds to the verisimilitude of the whole thing.

The Dragon Consortium members very publically move to the delegation and pledge to protect them for the remainder of their visit. The Aisildurands look confused, but relieved. The representatives of the Dirt City Merchants' Guild look terrified, and not without reason. If one of the Houses was behind the assassination attempt, these trade negotiations could go downhill fast. And now the Knives were involved, which was a mixed blessing at the best of times.

You leave the area, some of you managing to look peeved about your recent "argument." Talanthrel keeps an eye out, but sees nobody paying particular attention to your group.

The Knives are telling people to move along, nothing to see here. Well, given that it's the Knives, it's more like, "Oi! Clear off, you, before I break your face!" but it amounts to the same thing.

Var asks the pertinent question: Where to next?

After weighing your options, you decide to consult Boggs. You make your way to the Scrum, which seems a little less crowded than usual. Apparently, the excitement of the trade delegation's arrival is being felt even here. You look around, but you don't see Boggs.

Your next stop is the Crescent Moons Trading Company offices, where you have more luck. A smiling Madri Brightside greets you and sends a messenger to find Boggs. A few minutes later, you are meeting in a conference room that is rather too small for your group.

The Dragon Consortium protected the rest of the delegates then drafted us to hunt down the assassins. We succeeded in located a group of them and after a skirmish in which we won, secured their belongings. Unfortunately there wasn't time to question them as the knives were closing in. We found this purple and black glove of some historical significance and had a brief protected from eavesdropping chat with the two DC members, Jass and Beebee. We parted on mock bad terms to prevent us from being seen as 'good guys.' Beebee shoved me, I spelled kick me on his back in mud and words were exchanged. We then sought you out and here we are now." I don't know specifically why they're here," he replies to Wilford. "I'm not sure they have a specific goal in mind--just to assess the situation and see whether trade was possible here, or whether there was just too much criminal activity to make it worthwhile." He looks grim. "It would seem somebody wants to discourage them."

He examines the glove provided by Toston, nodding slowly. "Yes, I remember these," he says. "They were a calling card for one of the Darts' better assassins. What was her name...? Excuse me a moment."

He leaves the room and comes back a short time later, consulting a book. "Dema Fahr," he says. "House of Darts. But she was supposedly killed a few years back. This is strange indeed."

To Wil, Toston asks, "Estranged relative of yours?" regarding Dema.

To Bogss, Toston queries, "How many years ago was her supposed death? How old was Dema when she was supposedly killed?"

After allowing Boggs time to answer he asks, "What did she look like? Which one of the races was she? She wasn't a higly experienced monk, in addition to being an assassin by any chance?"

After Boggs answers these questions, Toston tries to remember if he spotted anyone matching her description in the crowd (Int check: 17)

If he didn't spot anyone in the crowd that could be her and the time between her supposed death and now would put her at old or venerable age Toston is inclined to think that this is another hoax. If he did remember seeing anyone that could be her or she was either a highly experienced monk or the time between her "death" and now would put her below old age he is open to the possibility that it could be her, but he isn't ruling a hoax out. Toston will vocalize his thoughts on this matter after Boggs answers these questions.

Even if it is a hoax, the investigation into these assassins would have to start somewhere, "Where should we go to find more information about Dema? Is there any place else we should check out to follow up on this assassination attempt?"

Lornak pauses as he pushes his back into the corner of the room while trying not to elbow anyone. He sucks in his gut and grunts "Then again, if someone is impersonating this Dema Fahr, finding out their true intentions might prove more difficult then simply keeping a keen eye."

Hmerrin finds himself once again struggling to keep up. He assumes the standard "Why of course I'm paying attention, and I understand everything you're saying" posture that got him through more than one lecture on the graining of ash wood vs walnut back home.

Because, eventually, there has to be a "go do this" action to take, right?

Dušan ponders what he knows about the House of Darts. "Aren't the darts primarily mercenaries? They might not be actual the ones behind this murder. The knife sure, but maybe not the hand."

Toston has questions about Dema Fahr, only some of which Boggs has answers for. "She was human," he says. "Rather dark-complected, as I recall. Dark hair. She died two or three years ago. She was still fairly young. Over thirty, but not by much. And I never heard that she was a monk."

Wilford's mother has a bit more. "Lovely girl," she says. "Very professional, you know. A lot of pride in her work. Fell off a roof, I believe, though one can never be sure."

Alizar searches his own memory, but comes up blank.

Lornak and Dušan are already working through the implications of this, while Var and Hmerrin await orders.

Boggs frowns. "We need intel," he says. "Are the Darts behind this? If so, did they get the tacit approval of the Knives? And what of the Wolves? The Wolves and Knives are currently allied, so if the Knives knew, the Wolves may have known as well. And that would be a problem." He shakes his head. "But I'm running ahead of myself. First we need to find out for sure if the Darts were behind this, and if so, we need more solid proof than a colorful glove. So," he says, "go back out there. Look around. Talk to people. Work your contacts, if you have any. Try to find out what happened, what the rumors are, who might be talking. When we have a clearer picture, we'll hopefully have a clearer idea what to do next."

"Hmm. Perhaps that information dealer we met in Clover Way might be able to turn something up." Var suggests, "But first, we might want to go talk to the merchants and the Trade Delegates, see if any of them saw something useful. If nothing else we can start poking around the sorts of taverns and places that Assassins-for-hire like to hang out, see what crawls out."

Dušan gets a dreamy expression as he considers the days events, particularly the oddness of running into the figure of Jass of Downs from a dream. He begins to shake his head of the cloudy thoughts when the familiar chiding of Johnathan brings back the memories "Remember, Dušan. Vorelle."

The name snapped the dream into clarity and his discussion with Jass and another individual named Cameron.

Dušan mutters, "You know, Johnathan, you could be onto something."

Dušan redirects his attention to the group. "That Jass fellow of the Dragon Consortium, you may not believe this, but I think I met him in a dream. A weird dream about a tavern. In fact, you," he nods at Var' "entered through a fireplace right after the Dragon Consortium fellows left. Anyways, they mentioned a Vorelle. I'm not sure how much stock we can put in dreams, but she's supposedly opening a school for the less fortunate. And they mentioned she is well connected."

(OOC: Kathy, I'm not sure if Vorelle was a PC or a recurring NPC. If she's not pertinent to this campaign, Dušan can shrug it off as minor ramblings of an eccentric witch.)

Alizar listened intently as he moved around the room to the injured. No sense bumbling about while not at full strength. He placed a hand on Wilford's shoulder and channeled healing energy into him

(Cure Light Wounds: d8+2= +9 HP to Wilford)

Then Alizar channeled positive energy to everyone in the room, not only healing, but strengthening the groups resolve for the coming trials ahead

(Channel positive energy: d6= +4 HP to everyone in the room)

Alizar let out a breath, and murmured to himself, "OK, ready to go."

"Three Bits may not be a bad choice. I wish we had Ashley. He seemed to really strike a chord with her. Maybe we should look up that Stubby guy associated with the House of Silver. too? It was mentioned that Stubby was freelance so he may know something about the crew they got for this job? We could also check with brother Elthorn. Trade is Ffloy's domain so maybe he will have some idea for the purpose of the trade delegation's visit and the a reason for someone to disrupt it?" Toston suggests.

Lornak was contemplating the groups next move when he heard Dusan mention a woman's name. The name Vorelle conjured images of pain... and reverence.

Lornak's crossed arm's gripped the table as he sprung forward. He curtly spoke up. "Vorelle? As in the Hero of Blackbird Lake?" He turned to address Dusan directly. "You heard this in a dream...?"

Realizing that his sudden interest in this person may cause some unease among the group his posture relaxes. He asks the group less hungrily; "Does anyone here know where she can be found? regardless if she has any first hand knowledge of the plot at hand..." He looks around the room. "...I respectfully volunteer to seek her out if no one else has any interest." Lornak tests his knowledge of her whereabouts. (Knowledge d20=12)

"Thanks brother," Wil said to Alizar as he felt the energy surge through him. "We could pay these individuals. Use them as our ears. They are mercenaries."
"That gentlemen within the warehouse seemed to know a lot. He could be useful and that warehouse would be a place to train. We would have to pay for that too.. maybe that's too much to ask?"
"Anyways, I think we should go there first. Didn't he say he had a landowner? Maybe we could speak to the owner of the warehouse?"
-- "Wil, did you find my father?" A small, innocent voice asked quietly.
-- "I have not Lucy," Wil said and disappeared into a conversation with the spirit. The mist from his cloak filled his corner of the room making it harder to see.

You discuss your options. Wilford has a history with the Darts, one he is not especially anxious to re-open. Var suggests talking to the merchants or hanging out where assassins get hired.

Dušan recalls that Vorelle, the retired adventurer, lives in Dirt City, and suggests her as a possible source of information. Lornak would also like to speak with her. [OOC: Vorelle is an NPC, and if you guys want to talk to her, you can. I just don't want to be that DM--the one who makes you interact with her old characters because they're sooooo awesome. So I will never be the one to suggest it, but you can try to talk to her if you want.]

Alizar is busy healing you up, but Toston suggests Brother Elthorn, or Three Bits. Or Stubby, whom you have never met, and who may not even exist (although he probably does). That puts Wilford in mind of the guard at the warehouse where you defeated the scorpion. Perhaps he would be willing to help?

So, it seems you have lots of possiblities. Boggs nods. "I'll leave you to it, then," he says. "Come back here if you need to talk to me again. I think all the trade offices will be pretty busy after today's excitement; nobody will notice a few extra sellswords coming and going."

Unless you have further questions for him, Boggs leaves you to your own devices. So, all you have to do now is figure out where you're going next.

Eager to leave the confines of the conference room, Lornak turns toward Dusan and offers to seek out Vorelle. "Our kindred spirits in the Dragon Consortium seemed to put much stock into these dreams and I do not believe them to be a coincidence. Does anyone care to join me in seeking Vorelle?"

Lornak eyes the group and addresses Toston. "I do not know these men you speak of but if they have answers I suggest you seek them out."

As he turns to leave the cramped space he says to Var. "When our parlay is finished I will meet you."(OOC Insert the name of the place where assassins get hired here)

"Bother Elthorn is probably still passed-out drunk on the church floor, but I suppose we could check in with him." Var says.

"Is everyone okay with splitting up? We do have assassins lurking about."

If the group is okay with splitting up, Var will lead a group back to the scene of the attack, in order to canvass it for witnesses & clues.

If the group wants to stick together, Var is willing to go see this Vorelle lady, first, but will insist on getting back to the trade square before the witnesses disperse.

"That's a brilliant idea Wil." Toston says, "We could go check with the WLA, Theyy are a pretty good source of information. If we went there I could also do some training. Aside from that I think we should visit Vorelle, if she is an experienced retired adventurer that wants to do right by the people of Dirt City maybe she knows something about what is going on."
