Sneak Attack

You discuss the matter, and decide a quick trip to the docks won't use up too much time.

So you depart the warehouse and start making your way through the Backstab Quarter toward the water. The quarter is aptly named; filled with winding streets and blind alleys that seem to invite an ambush.

So it's not too surprising to round a corner and see a group of tough-looking customers awaiting you. One of them, a human man with numerous facial scars, says "this is a warning. Stay away from the House of Silver." He drinks a potion.

Next to him, a hulking half-orc also drinks a potion.

From the shadows come two missiles. A crossbow bolt flies toward Ashley, but falls to the ground short of its target. An arrow heads for Talanthrel, but can't get through his armor.

You can now see that the arrow was fired by a drow. The crossbow bolt was fired by some kind of creature. It looks a little like a rat, but it's standing on hind legs and weilding weapons.

Toston turns to Wil, "Know these guys?" he asks.

To their assailants he says, "This is the first we have heard of The House of Silver. That name does not ring a bell. Should we have heard of you?"

To the rest of his own group Toston says, "Oh look they have a pet." indicating the rat-creature with a crossbow.

Toston then takes a 5 foot step forward and casts a spell. He then draws his masterwork kama using a move action. "Let's dance"

Responding quickly to the bolt Wil fires back at the Rat looking thing.
"Ugh," he says as he realizes afterward that he fired the bolt and the target was at an impossible distance.
"Hey, do I know you?" Wil asks loudly.
Tactically, Wil wonders if he could use his ability to talk to the dead to his advantage and polls any available voices. "Can someone show me a tactical hole in the enemy?"

Avin crouches reflexively and chants, releasing a coil of abjurant magic, letting it surround his body protectively. (Casting mage armor on himself). As the magic settles he draws his new dagger and readies himself for a fight.

Toston casts a spell and steps forward. He tries to figure out what the rat-creature might be, but the answer eludes him. [OOC: It's a Nature check.]

Wilford fires a shot at the rat-creature, and hits. However, his bolt does no damage whatsoever.

Avin casts a spell and draws his dagger.

Var indulges in a bit of trash-talking, and readies his bow.

The rat-creature pulls out a potion and drinks it. "Stop nosing around Below," he says. The words sound odd coming out of his rat-like muzzle, but they are clear enough to understand.

The half-orc moves forward, roaring a challenge. He gets close enough to set off Var's readied shot, but the arrow flies wide. The half-orc grins. It is not a pleasant grin. He raises a javelin that appars to be made from an entire tree-branch and hurls it at Var. It, too, flies wide, and the half-orc howls in frustration.

The human man charges Talanthrel, aiming a flying kick at the elf fighter. He mis-judges the distance, however, and lands on his feet just in front of Talanthrel. He takes up a fighting stance.

The drow moves closer and fires another shot, this one at Toston. It skips off the cobblestones, and the drow curses.

Ashley takes a 5 foot step, drawing his greatsword and swinging it at the human, growling in frustration at himself for not paying enough attention and being slow on the draw. He swings his steel towards the leaping unarmed fighter, wondering if he would have a similar fighting style as Toston, or something different.

Avin mentally catalogues the curious nature of the rat fellow (knowledge:nature 27). Stalking forward he draws ambient energy into his fist. It solidifies and the wizard lashes out (touch attack roll: 16) to strike the drow with telekinetic force (3 damage)

Ashley takes a swing at the human, which connects.

Avin realizes that the rat-thing is a were-rat, and that it is difficult to damage with any weapons except silver ones. He uses his Telekinetic Fist on the drow, and does some damage.

Talanthrel draws his blade and attacks, but the arcing swing goes right past his human opponent.

Toston charges and hits! The human drops to the cobbles.

Wilford attempts to talk to the rat-man, but gets no response.

Var fires again, and hits this time. [That opponent went down; do you want to apply your damage to the half-orc or the drow?]

The half-orc moves up to attack Toston. He swings a heavy flail, and hits! Toston takes 11 damage.

The drow moves up to attack Avin. He thrusts with a rapier, and hits! Avin takes 6 damage.

The were-rat moves closer, and throws something at Wilford. It's a tanglefoot bag! The bag arcs through the air toward Wilford, but the nimble rogue is able to duck out of the way. The were-rat curses under its breath.

Toston chooses to fight defensively as a full round action (+2 dodge to AC; -4 to attack) and flurries at the mountainous half-orc using his kama. He misses on both accounts and nearly cuts himself the first time. (1 vs AC; 6 vs AC)

Toston takes a 5 foot step back diagonally to stand shoulder to shoulder with Avin. "That half-orc packs a punch!" Toston tells his companions.

Ashley sees Toston take a big hit, scowling darkly as he makes his way forward to engage the Half-Orc. He doesn't say anything to his companions, as there's nothing that needs to be said. With him standing up to the Half-Orc, they can work on flanking him, and the others can support Wilford with the rat. Ashley swings his sword at his opponent, but the blade glances off of the armor with a grating sound.

Talanthrel charges the rat-man, but his blow misses. [OOC: Also, you didn't move your icon, so I went ahead and did it for you.]

Var pulls out a wand and heals Ashley.

Wilford loads a silver crossbow and fires at the rat-man, but his shot misses.

Toston flurries at the half-orc, but is unable to connect.

Ashley steps up, intent on taking on the half-orc himself, but his first blow is not a good one.

The half-orc is happy to oblige, and swings his flail at Ashley. It connects! Ashley takes 9 points of damage. Grinning, the half-orc steps back.

Meanwhile, the rat-man attacks Talanthrel. The rapier darts in, quick as lightning, and jabs Talanthrel for 4 damage. But it's the bite you have to watch out for! The snapping teeth close, but do not penetrate Talanthrel's armor.

The drow draws a short sword, but continues attacking Avin with his rapier. He is only able to tap Avin with the tip; there is no power behind the blow and it skips aside.

"Were-rat!" Avin calls to the others with a snarl. "Kill with silver!"

The wizard slashes out with his own blade with all the skill of a fish (natural one). He takes a short step back five feet to attempt to mitigate the fallout and draws his other dagger.

Ashley takes a five foot step, trying his best not to show just how hard that flail hit him beneath the crushed in chestplate. He was certain that a few of his ribs were cracked underneath his metal plating, and if they survived this, he'd be hoping Var would wave that magic stick at him some more. For now, he was looking to not go after the half-orc himself, but rather, he attempts to bring the blade of his sword down through the haft that the heavy, oversized flail was attached to.

Avin stabs out with all his wizardly skill, and it is perhaps not surprising that he misses.

Var heals Toston.

Talanthrel swings at the were-rat, but he is off-balance and his stroke misses.

Wilford, annoyed with himself, assays another shot, but this one is no better than the last.

Toston flurries at the drow fighter, but is unable to connect.

Ashley attempts to Sunder his opponent's weapon. Doing so provokes an attack of opportunity from the half-orc, which luckly misses. His blow strikes the half-orc's weapon and Sunders it.

The drow attacks Toston, once with the rapier and once with the short sword. Only the rapier connects, darting in for 5 points of damage.

The half-orc drops his useless flail to the ground, draws his shortspear, and steps over next to Talanthrel. He attacks Ashley, however, howling with rage. His blow hits, and Ashley takes 9 more damage.

The were-rat steps up to flank Talanthrel with his half-orc buddy. He lashes out with his rapier, but his aim is way off, and he all but falls over, snarling in frustration.

"Toston! Ashley! Hold on!" Var shouts, and in a flurry of magic he manages to get the wand to activate twice in rapid succession.

Before charging the were-Rat Wil remembers the tanglefoot bag but it was too far behind him to grab quickly. He grabs the tanglefoot bag within his bag and throws it toward the were-Rat

Avin circles back in to flank the dark elf, bringing a gleaming blade in a glittering arc (attack roll: 14+2 flanking- forgot to add in). The metal glints hungrily as it speeds toward the drow, point first (Damage: 5).

Ashley recoils from the orc's spear, adding another wound to his growing roster of injuries. Broken ribs, and now puncture wounds. His blacksmith would have fun charging him for armor repairs. He brings his huge sword to bear, retaliating with anger at how terribly he has fared so far. He roars out a challenge, bringing the heat of the moment to bear.

"You're going to regret this!"

Var concentrates on healing this round, making a heroic effort to reach two of his friends.

Talanthrel attacks the half-orc, but his blade skips off an invisible barrier. You can't help but wonder what was in the potion that fellow drank.

Wilford throws his own tanglefoot bag, but misses. The gooey mess splatters on the cobbles nearby. He moves up with his dagger.

Avin and Toston attack the drow, but none of them manage to land a blow on the nimble dark elf.

Ashley swings his sword at the half-orc, and there's no nonsense about invisible barriers here! The blade bites deep into the half-orcs side, and the man bellows with pain and rage.

The were-rat, perhaps seeing how things are going for Team Bad Guy, uses the Withdrawal action to move away from the battle. "You'll regret making enemies of the House of Silver!" he shouts.

"Coward" the half-orc shouts. He steps out of flank and jabs his spear at Ashley, but he is clearly distracted and the blow goes nowhere.

"Anner! Get back here!" yells the drow. He steps out of flank and attacks Toston with rapier and short sword. He seems distracted, too, however, and neither blow lands.

With the kind of tenacity normally reserved for a dog with a bone that's somewhat too large, Avin pursues the drow. He spindles more energy into another telekinetic strike. For a second he feels as if the worst is about to happen but strains to put as much pressure as possible behind the strike.

Fruitless though his labor seems he closes in upon the drow once more, refusing to give way to the opponent.

(Expended a hero point for a reroll.)

"Hey", Wil yells, "I tried to negotiate!"
"You tell him," says his mother within his head. "What do you need, mother?"
"Nothing, just being encouraging." Wil laughed out loud but quickly stopped.
Wil loads a wooden bolt and aims toward the pale, highly sculpted chest of one of the "bad guys" and fires when stepping 5 foot toward him.

Ashley grins at the Half-Orc's pain, his teeth coated with a red hue from the blood welling in his mouth. That flail had hurt pretty badly, after all. Ashley swings his sword in a massive arc, wounding the drow and dropping the half-orc to the cobbles.

Looking alarmed, the drow drops his short sword and begins fumbling in his belt pouch. Toston's kama catches him in the ribs, and he, too, drops, a potion bottle falling from his hand.

The battle is over. For clarification, it was the were-rat, not the drow, who fled. The other three are dead or dying on the ground.

Ashley goes to inspect their fallen foes, not getting in the way of those that are helping to stabilize the men. His knowledge of medicine was quite lacking, at the moment. Instead, he reaches into his pack to procure a 50 ft. length of silken rope, working to unravel it.

"It might do to tie them together, leg to leg, and then their hands. Sort of an improvised hobble."

Kneeling to the two, he scoots the Drow over to the Half-Orc, and begins to do what he said he was going to.

The battle over, Talanthrel looks to see whether the were-rat is returning with reinforcements. You don't see any sign of that at the moment.

Wilford looks for clues to identify them, but doesn't see much. Their gear is pretty standard, although some of it is pretty nice. [OOC: Tanglefoot bags are one-use items. Hit or miss, once you throw it, it's gone.]

Toston can see that the human is a goner, but the drow and the half-orc are still breathing. He stabilizes them while Ashley prudently ties them together and Avin even more prudently goes through their stuff.

The wizard shrugs and then shakes his head, considering the threat of violence sanctionable without the violence but preferring to get out before any Knives were to come.

Wilford tries to request help from the dead, but they still seem oddly silent. The only assistance he seems to get is a nasty voice that cackles, "Kick 'em in the family jewels!" which isn't terribly helpful.

Toston suggests removing the Drow to a safer location and questioning him there, and everyone sees the wisdom of leaving the area before the Knives show up.

The prospect of interrogating a prisoner brings up some interesting questions about good and evil and right and wrong. However, assuming nobody wants to lead with torture, there's probably time to work all that out later.

You pick up the remaining loot (correct?) and head back toward the warehouse (also correct?).

You cover the drow with a blanket, and carry him to the warehouse. In the interest of speed, you leave the heavier half-orc for the Knives. Between them, Avin and Talanthrel make sure that you don't leave anything behind.

Wilford is easily able to direct you back to the warehouse. You burst in, and come face-to-face with a startled Clovis.

"You again!" he says. "Look, I appreciate what you done for me and all, but what makes you think you can just come barging--is that guy dead? You can't just store dead drow in here! I don't want no trouble with my boss, and I sure as Jancassis don't want no trouble with the Knives. You gotta leave. And take the dead guy with you."

We are willing to give you 3 gold pieces, that is ten days worth of wages, if you will allow us the temporary use of your warehouse and additionally pretend you never saw us this after we leave. Toston's attempt goes rather better, and he thinks to offer some coin to sweeten the deal. Var chimes in to assist, while Ashley looks on and Avin contemplates how the Knives are more a hindrance than a help for the good guys. Which is quite true.

Clovis accepts the three gold pieces with a grunt. "I never seen you," he says. "And you take the drow with you when you leave. Got it?" With that, he turns and heads deeper into the warehouse.

The drow is still (mostly) unconscious, though he's moving around a little more than he was a minute ago. He may be about to come round. What is the plan, and what questions will you be asking him?

Toston calls the group aside, out of earshot of the unconscious drow and whispers, "The way I see it, there are a few ways to play this out. One is that some of us try to be nice, while the others are more forceful. Two is we get him to give up something he thinks we already know even though we don't. We know that the name of the wererat who got away was Anner and we know that our questioning into the haunting upset someone with the House of SIlver, so we could act like we captured someone else from the House of Silver, like Anner and that this drow is just sort of corroborating what we got from the other prisoner. Three is we just bluntly ask him what we want to know. We could promise to let him go if he tells us everything he knows about Anner and the House of SIlver. There are also other avenues that we could explore but I think it would be best to try one of these other ways first. If they fail we could always try to intimidate him or charm him. I would need to run down to the catacombs for a scroll of charm person but charming someone sort of violates their free will. What do the rest of you think?"

Regardless of what approach the party asks to go for, Toston would like to find out more about the were-rat Anner, The House of Silver and what their connection is to the events that are happening in Clover Way.

Toston proposes a strategy for questioning the prisoner by pretending to have captured Anner. Avin is skeptical, but has no counter-proposal.

You make sure your prisoner is securely tied before waking him up. He jerks and shakes his head. "Awright, awright," he says. "I got the gold for ya, but ya gotta go get it. It's--" he pauses. "Hey," he says. "Hey, you ain't the Knives. You're those guys! Those guys we were supposed ta...." he trailes off.

Toston removes the smoked glass goggles from off his head. "Please forgive my companions. They don't take being the targets of an attempted murder too well. I believe these are yours. If memory serves these goggles help your kind deal with the surface."

Toston places the smoked glass goggles over the drows' eyes. He digs through his pack and takes out a ration and his water skin. He offers the drow some food and drink. Holding the skin and the food for the drow to eat and drink if he indicates that he is interested in either or both.

"My name is Toston. What is yours?"

After getting an answer...

"[insert drow name here or Mr. Dark Elf if the drow did not suitably answer], I want to help you but there are some questions that I need you to answer to persuade my traveling companions to not harm you. I'm a lot more reasonable than they are and I am willing to advocate to them on your behalf, but you need to give me something I can work with. Who are the house of silver? Why do they want us to stop asking questions in the city below? What do they have to do with the events happening in clover way?"

"Alternatively where is the location of this cache of gold that you offered up when you thought we were the knives? Perhaps some gold could persuade them to not harm you further?"

Toston looks the drow squarely in the goggles and says, "I want to help you, but you have to give me something that I can work with."

Ashley seeks to intimidate the prisoner, with help from Var and Wilford. The drow flinches visibly, and looks to be pretty well intimidated.

So when Toston comes in with his nice act, the drow is already primed and ready to talk.

"Uhm, I'm called Rundi," he says. "The House of Silver, they're the ones who hired me. Said they had a problem and needed help solving it. We was supposed to rough you up, warn you off from askin' questions Below." He shakes his head. "Dunno what kinda questions you been askin', but I guess you know since you're the ones been askin' 'em. Ain't never heard of Clover Way. I ain't House of Silver, see, I was just hired. Connor and Anner, they're the ones from House of Silver. And Connor's dead and Anner's run off, so there you are."

Those of you Sensing Motives get the feeling that Rundi is telling the truth.

Toston motions for his companions to step aside and then whispers the them, "I think he is telling the truth. Is there anything else that you guys think we should ask. Otherwise he is a continuing threat that needs to be taken care of."

Wilford turns his thoughts to his local knowledge of Dirt City. You know that there are six major Houses in Dirt City, each focusing on a specific area of crime. It is perhaps significant that this group is calling itself the "House of Silver." Perhaps they have ambitions to beome a seventh major House. If that's the case, they have a long way to go, but they have to start somewhere.

Talanthrel complains that Rundi hasn't given you much information, which is true. He was apparently hired just for this one job, and doesn't know much about his employers.

Toston wonders whether he can be redeemed, and possibly sent to Brother Elthorn as an assistant. Avin likes the sound of that plan; Talanthrel does not.

It's possible that Rundi has a few more tidbits of information if you ask the right questions. [OOC: Your DM has given you everything she thinks is relevant, but she is human and doesn't think of everything. So if you have a question you think he would know the answer to, go ahead and ask.]

Barring that, you'll need to make a decision about what to do with him. Somewhere on the other side of the warehouse, you can hear Clovis pacing nervously.

Looking back at Rundi, Var says loudly "I'm guessing that his masters won't be pleased with his failing - and if they find out he's a snitch, too? To the party Toston whispers, "Var, that is a great idea. If Rundi is agreeable we could try to use him as bait to lure other members of the house of silver into an ambush. We could let slip where he is hiding out at and then hopefully capture someone else who may know more about this upstart faction. Alternatively, I'm going to ask Rundi how he got the job from house of silver. Maybe there is a location they frequent where they pick up contractors looking to freelance. If we know where that is we could pose as toughs for hire looking for work. When someone from the house of silver contacts us for a job, we could capture them and find out what they know."

To Rundi, Toston says, "Rundi, how and where did the House of Silver contact you to enlist your services? Did you seek them out or did they seek you out? Where in the city did they meet with you?"

Toston then says, "Rundi, are you willing to change your ways? If we found you honest work would you take it? We happen to know a certain cleric of Ffloy who probably could use an assistant. We could potentially secure you a place to stay as well as food and a potential stipend if you are willing to turn aside from the path you are currently on. Wouldn't you like a second chance and a fresh start. You don't have to rob and assault people. You could help them, instead."

Var points out that Rundi is probably living on borrowed time. The drow looks uncomfortable but says nothing.

Toston asks Rundi about how he was hired. "Through a guy I know," he replies. "He ain't House of Silver neither, but he's a guy who sets things up, y'know? He's a halfling guy who goes by Stubby; I don't know his real name. He contacted me; came and found me at the Midnight Bazaar."

Toston goes on to ask if Rundi wants to reform. The drow laughs. "Change my ways? Nah, friend." He glances uneasily at Var. "It's like your pal says. I should maybe leave town for a bit. That is, if you're ready to let me go."

Avin suggests turning the whole matter over to the Knives, or just letting events unfold as they will. Certainly the other Houses will have something to say about this upstart.

Why would he pick a fight with someone in his state when he has money and probably a go-bag packed away somewhere. If he won't turn aside from his wicked ways and we can't trust the morally bankrupt authorities, then exile is the only way. Let's put him on a boat bound for far away and be done with him."

Avin twitches his nose and worries his fingers. Perhaps sending just this one drow out of the city would be all right. After all, the House of Silver was already looking to keenly at them. A House in Dirt City could probably afford a few assassins, especially if it meant getting rid of people that might hurt their profit margins. Avin tried to keep an eye out anyway.

Faced with a decision, you decide to split the party! What could possibly go wrong?

Ashley and Talanthrel go to talk to Three-Bits. However, since Three-Bits is Below, where they really go is to the nearest entrance to queue up again.

The rest of the group escorts Rundi to his cache of gold (buried in a tiny plot of dirt next to his rooming-house), and then to the docks. You find a ship to put him on, the Green Goblin, whose crew may not even be pirates. Well, not all of them.

As you move about the docks, you see somebody approaching you with a purposeful stride. It is Abel Boggs, and walking next to him is one of the tallest elves you've ever seen. "I was hoping to run into you down here," Boggs says. He draws you aside, checking to make sure you can't be overheard. "I have a new member for your team. Alizar here is a priest and healer; I've been trying to get you one for a while." With the ghost of a smile, he adds, "try not to break him, eh?"

[OOC: Everybody say hello to Rocky's character! Be sure to describe your character in your post so you can all "see" each other. Alizar will have to meet Ashley and Talanthrel a little later.]

Var gives Boggs a curt not, unsure of how to address him in the open. The activities of the past few days has taken something of a toll on Var, who hasn't slept in a proper bed for the better part of a week. His facial hair is somewhere between a 5 o'clock shadow and a proper beard, one might call it 'scruff' when looking at it from the right angle. Laiden with what appears to be a sack of giant scorpion meat, in addition to his backpack, Var carries his wearyness in such a way to suggest he's familiar with pulling long, forced marches before. His dreadlocks look like they might have bits of...something in them, matted blood or perhaps the ichor of some recently encountered beast.

His masterwork longbow looks almost out of place on the Half-Orc, being the only 'luxury' item he carries, certainly the most well-maintained item (or perhaps just the newest). The rest of his gear, from his studded leather jerkin to his twin handaxes, seem to be in dire need of replacement or reforging.

Var looks at the newcoming and nods to him as well, "Oi." is all he offers as greeting.

Alizar took a second to take in the sight of his new companions. Two humans, a gnome, and a half orc. In stark contrast to Alizar's crisp black and white scholars suit and tie, and impeccably groomed umber hair, they looked a bit, well, 'ragged' is the best term that came to mind. In fact, the half Orc, who offered little more than a grunt in greeting, looked as though he badly needed to be dumped into barrel of soapy water, his clothes burned, the ashes deposited into a heavy sack, and then in turn, have the sack burned as well.
Alizar turned his head back to Abel and raised an eyebrow before stepping forward towards the group. The heavy load on his back, consisting of his adventuring backpack, a short recurve bow, red in hue, and a suit of green leather armor, bundled for travel, sloshed sideways as he stepped forward, not enough to make him stumble, but enough to break his stride.
"Greetings, my name is Alizar. If you're as good as Abel says you are, then maybe we all won't be dead within the week."

Toston Lotor is tall for a gnome. He has orange skin and close-cropped green hair with violet eyes that you can just see peeking out from the hood of a cloak. He stands 3 feet 8 inches tall and is currently wearing a nondescript traveler's outfit consisting of charcoal grey coloured breeches and shirt and a black cloak with black gloves and boots. This outfit looks like it has seen better days as there are some minor tears in the fabric. He is carrying a small arsenal. He has a kama and sling bullets strapped to his torso, a siangham and nunchaku on either side of his belt and a sling attached to his backpack.

Toston appraises the elf healer.

He then says, "Well met friend. My name is Toston Lotor, humble monk and sorcerer. We have had to make due for a while with a ranger or 2 and a wand of healing. We have had a few close calls. A proper Cleric should lessen the chances of any of us meeting Gargul any time soon. Welcome to the team."

From beneath the cloak the wizard wipes his hands on a dingy tan shirt before extending one to the elf in greeting. His lips are turned down, uncertain of this newcomer but at this point the wizard has resigned himself to trusting his new employer and the judgment of Abel Boggs.

Do you know anything about preparing scorpion meat?" the half-orc asks as they make their way through the docks, finding a tradesman with reasonably priced salt.

Alizar smiled as he gripped Avin's hand in a firm shake. "Well, don't judge the rest of my species too harshly on account of me.
Alizar tried to discreetly wipe his hand clean on a handkerchief as he turned to watch Abel depart, he seemed a curious man, but that was a mystery for another time. Alizar turned his attention back to the group.
"Thank you all, for the warm welcome. We can talk more about the details when we get back to the house. Dirt City has many ears."
Alizar looked to Var, "Now, about that Scorpion meat. Have you ever been to 'Cerino's'? It's simply THE BEST little pub that serves a variety of exotic meats. The cook there, he used to be a patient of mine, I seem to remember him once telling me about a wonderful recipe for scorpion stew..."

Avin's handshake is trepidatious at best and he quickly pulls it back. The appendage disappears behind green fabric as the wizard mutters.

"... because years of living with elves would of course be forgotten moments after meeting..." the mumbles become to soft and incoherent to make out anything beyond that. Regardless, the wizard soon lapses into silence with nostalgia etched painfully in his absent gaze.

Avin slowly shakes himself out of his reverie. With greetings out of the way he heads onwards, wanting to rid himself of a number of objects that would each need to be peace-tied.

Alizar gave a small chuckle to Toston's question.
"Well officially, I serve the Pantheon as a whole. Each God has their role, working together for the greater harmony of the world. Balance."

He paused for a second, taking stock of those words. He had seen how unfair the world could be, how the scales tended to shift more often in the favour of some, over others.

He continued, "However, I also believe that beings need to make their own way in this world, and that, in the end, we all control our own destiny."

The faded smile returned to Alizar's lips as he ran his fingers through his hair. "As for Scorpion Meat, well, just remember, something does not necessarily have to taste good for people to pay obscene amounts of money to eat it."

Wil stepped forward from the back off the group and offered his hand to the new adventurer. Wil's brownish hair was tied in a long, tight roll down the back of his head. He woke a black cloak and jiggled loudly as he moved. "Welcome to the group, friend. I am the crazy one."
"Scorpion soup, sounds like a tasty meal."
The voices in his head hissed simultaneously. "Disss... gusting," grumbled the voice.
"Yes, really sounds nice," Wil disappear near the back of the group.
"If your going to bug me, we are going to have to get along," he said quietly.
The voice sang, the tone shrank and the little girl returned. "Ok, we will get along."

And speaking of them, Ashley and Talanthel have at last reached the front of the line. You peacebond your weapons, and listen patiently to the various colorful threats the Knives make about what will happen if you "start something." You are totally being profiled! But the Knives have a job to do; they can't keep you hear forever, so after just a couple of minutes they stand back and let you enter the stairwell. Jerks.

The group that is still Above return to Marsh House. Alizar, seeing the place for the first time, is struck by how....architecturally unusual it is. There is a modest stone house at its core, which has been built on and expanded in astonishing directions and a hodge-podge of different styles. It's....well, it's different.

You are able to salt away the scorpion meat in the spacious pantry, and soon you are heading Below.

Meanwhile, Ashley and Talenthrel have arrived Below and begin heading for Clover Way, keeping an eye out for Three Bits.

"Charming", thought Alizar, as he stowed his gear in one of the empty rooms and hurriedly changed out of his suit and into his leather armour. The green studded suit was stiff from years of disuse, but it still fit. In fact, he thought he cut a rather dashing figure. Not that he was in any way vain, just an elf. After carefully placing his suit on it's hanger, and hooking it on the back of the door, he descended the stairs to rejoin his compatriots. He would have to once again get use to the feeling of an arrow quiver bouncing against his torso.

"Right, so before we go dashing off into the city below, does anyone want to bring me up to speed as what we are actually doing here? Boggs isn't exactly the 'Sage's Guild' when it comes to the details. What was the name you mentioned? The House of Silver was it?

Ashley and Talanthrel are able to find Three Bits. When she hears that your mission was a success, she hands over the "clue" she had discovered. It is a scrap of gauzy fabric, about six inchess long, liberally daubed with luminescent paint. "That's what I found," she says. "Make of it what you will."

Meanwhile, the rest of the group queues up and goes through the process to get Below. You peacebond your weapons, and are cleared to go through. You catch up with Ashley and Talanthrel, who are able to tell you what they got from Three-Bits.

As soon as he gets Below, Wilford's voices are again silent.

"Okay, so there's a ghost haunting Clover Way, that's a quiet little row of merchants in the City Below, and we met an informant, Two Bits, who says she has some evidence about the haunting that we should see. But she made us go fight a giant scorpion, first. Which is where all that scorpion meat came from. Then we got jumped by these thugs who claimed they were from 'House Silver' which is weird since there ain't no House Silver." Var looks around at the crowd and leans in closer to Alizar before continuing, "It's got me thinking that maybe this ghost has gotten involved in some organized crime."

Avin was content to let Var fill in the newcomer on current events and rolling his eyes and snorts as the ranger states his suspicion that the ghost was a hoax. Having mentioned the possibility that it was such when the matter was first discovered, Avin felt a bit sore that Var claimed the idea as if he were the only one ot think it. Nevertheless he was more concerned about getting a peace tie on each of his weapons at the time. He resolved that if these trips were to become regular he would need a pair of gloves to cover the tie on his wrist.

Thankfully no harm has befallen Ashley or Talanthrel by the time they reunite and Avin finds himself immensely pleased by that fact. His pleasure lasts only as long as it takes for them to explain the find, the hoax to the best intents and purpose being confirmed.

The wizard fixes Wilford with a stern gaze urging him to connect the obvious dots.

"Silver," the wizard states simply while thinking that Three Bits was likely not the married type unless he had missed something.

Alizar took in all the details from Var as they made their way to the City Below.

"Well, if we are truly dealing with a phantom, there are a number of ways we can go about dealing with that situation. I will need more information about the spirit in question first. Perhaps we can put its soul to rest, even if it is a member of a 'ghost gang', as you suggest"

Alizar had a bit of a soft spot for ghosts and spirits. Generally, they still hung onto this plane of existence due to some torment or unfinished business. In either case, they were just another patient with an ailment in need of healing.
However, as they rejoined there group, the ghosts pain was not what grabbed Alizar's attention. Ashley, one of the two members they had gone below to meet, was beat up pretty good. While the others were examining the 'clue' provided by Three Bits, Alizar circled to Ashley's side, and without a word placed a hand on his shoulder, concentrated momentarily, and released a flow of positive energy.

Wilford asks whether anyone had been throwing their weight around of late. "Not really," Three Bits replied. "Of course, the Knives will come through and shake down the merchants from time to time, but they haven't been worse than usual. And Billy's a snooty pain in the you-know-what, but he's been that way for years, and done no real harm that I ever saw."

Avin urges the group to ask about the House of Silver.

Alizar sees that Ashley is injured and heals the fighter.

Toston suggests checking with the other merchants here to see whether the things they saw could be explained by gauze and luminous paint. Do you want to do that? Talk to Three Bits some more? Return to Marsh House and try some scorpion? Something else?

"Well, I think if Three Bits has no other info to share, our best bet is what Var suggests. We need more information, and while we can certainly spend some time talking to the merchants about what they saw, first hand observation will be the best way to get to the bottom of this. I say we set up an observation point and try to catch this 'ghost' in the act.

He has long, brown hair that comes down to his shoulders with a beard of the same color, and is currently dressed in heavy armor, a suit of splintmail to be precise. He gives a smile of gratitude to Alizar, shifting the weight of the greatsword strapped to his back as some of his wounds knit themselves together.

Var suggests hanging around Clover Way for a while, in an attempt to catch this so-called ghost.

The rest of the grop seems amenable, although Toston wonders about a curfew. Talanthrel thinks to ask one of the merchants.

You learn that, although there isn't a formal curfew, the Knives will probably be suspicious of anyone hanging around in Clover Way after the shops are closed. You could certainly stay until then; afterwards may be trickier.

Alizar suggests talking to the merchants to get more information. Alas, as he is soon to discover, his new companions are not an especially charismatic bunch, and are quite reluctant to try to talk to people. Alizar is the "face" of the group, without a doubt. If he wants any talking done, he's probably going to have to do it himself. He also offers to heal wounds.

Ashley asks Three Bits what it would cost to find information about the House of Silver. "Custom job," she says thoughtfully. "Not my usual thing, but I just can't say no to a man with a really big sword." She winks. "Say a 5-gold retainer for now, and I'll find out what I can."

Wilford is interested in acquiring more silver, and looks around for Fletch's cart. You don't see it at the moment, but you have heard that Fletch is a regular here so she'll be back at some point.

Avin suggests setting a trap, although you would probably still need to figure out some way to deal with the Knives. If you want to stay here all night.

Following Var, Alizar tried to put on his best 'aristocratic face' as they entered the tailor's shop. Walking up to the counter, he placed the piece of gauss on the counter and cleared his throat to get the tailors attention.

"Greetings sir. I've been up and down the high streets of the Lower City, and everyone I have talked to have pointed me towards your shop, as being THE PLACE to go if you are looking for the highest quality fabrics, and knowledge of fabrics. You see, I was walking about the other day, and I found this pieces of cloth on the ground. It has some of the most fantastic qualities to it, and I really think it would make a splendid dress for my lovely wife Vivian. Could you possibly tell me more about this, where you think it might have come from, and where I might find more?"

Wilford suggests finding a place to stay the night, and Toston begins looking around for one. Alas, Clover way is a quiet street of shops; there are few dwellings and no temporary lodgings to be found. There are inns Below, of course, but the closest of these is two tunnels over.

Meanwhile, Var introduces Alizar to Golden Threads, and Alizar speaks to the proprietor, a fashionably-dressed halfling man.

"Well," he says, obviously pleased by Alizar's flattery. "Well, it's good to know that one's efforts are appreciated. I--" he takes the cloth and examines it. "Oh, dear. Oh, dear, dear, dear. Sir, if anyone has been passing this off to you as fine goods, then I'm afraid you've been 'taken,' to use the vernacular. This is the cheapest kind of gauze cloth--note the weave, sir--bedaubed with some kind of luminous paint. Now, if you're searching for something special, I have here some fine silk, sent direct from elven craftsmen in the Emerald Kingdom. Not easy to come by, sir, even these days with things there so improved."

Looking around Var still does not see Fletch. However, you do catch a glimpse of Old Man Jenkins, just coming around the corner.

Assuming 'Old Man' Jenkins gives him some names and that Toston doesn't get a clear sense that 'Old Man' Jenkins is lying about this he will do his best to remember those names, take Wil aside and ask if he ever heard of any of those names. Toston considers trying to foil 'Old Man' Jenkins disguise that he saw through last time they met, but this being dirt city, maybe the disguise is protecting 'Old Man' Jenkins from being hunted down by someone.

Following this train of thought, Toston will say, "Old Man Jenkins, is anyone giving you problems? Is your life in danger? Is there anything maybe we could do to help you?"

The rest of the party is keen to confront Old Man Jenkins, who harrumphs with an irritated air. "You again! Come to your senses? No? Adventurers, pah!"

You ask him some specific questions, but get little in the way of useful responses. "Names!" he scoffs. "They're restless spirits, sonny, they don't introduce themselves. And no, I don't need your help. What's the use? You don't believe me nohow."

Wilford can confirm that the dead often do not give their names.

Old Man Jenkins was certainly a curious fellow. Not having any previous interaction with him beyond what the team had told him, Alizar decided to stay back on this one and try to assess the old man's demeanor. Body language was a powerful thing, and as a doctor, Alizar had learned a fair deal about biological reactions to behaviors, such as deceit. Plus, the old man had so many people in his face at the moment, it would be difficult to be very diplomatic...

"Well I didn't believe you because I knew you were lying. I also know that you are lying about something else, but maybe you have your reasons for doing that." Toston says to 'Old Man' Jenkins.

"Some people just don't want help." the gnome says.

He then looks around for Fletch or Grut and either one's dogs. He realizes that there were technically 3 other witnesses that no one questioned last time around and that the speaks with animal spell like ability could come in handy, especially since they have the gauze.

If he finds any of the aforementioned beings and their dogs he will ask the owner (Fletch or Grut) if it is okay if he speaks to the dogs. He will then use his daily speaks with animals SLA to ask the dogs about the glowing figures in the alleys and ask them to sniff the gauze to find out if it smells familiar to them.

If it does he will ask the dogs and the owners if it is okay if the dogs lead the party toward where the smell of the gauze takes them.

Avin leaves Old Man Jenkins to those who have the matter well in hand. Instead he moves with Toston as the gnome searches for the dogs, thinking to put his mind to work elsewhere. Perhaps he might learn something about handling animals or at the very least add his knowledge to the sorcerer's own.

Wilford confirms that the dead often don't introduce themselves. How rude.

Var gets right in Old Man Jenkins's face, but doesn't really learn anything new. The man harrumphs a bit more, then walks away. Alizar detects no deceit, but the man hardly said anything.

Meanwhile Toston is looking around for Fletch or Grut or the dogs. He comes up empty.

Looking around, you can see that some of the shops are beginning to close. The business day seems to be coming to an end, and you need a plan.

"Does Three-Bits live around here?" Toston asks Wil, "I don't recall her saying. Though I mean if this is where she does business, I would think she would most likely live elsewhere, considering the line of work she is in. I mean isn't there an old addage about not squatting where you eat or some such?"

"Our other options are to stay here and risk an encounter with the knives, return to the Marsh House once again or find temporary lodgings a few tunnels over, but if there is any activity ghostly or otherwise we would most likely miss it from that far away. At that rate we should probably head back to the Marsh House as we already payed for it."

Toston then renews Toros Taur Try, looks for an out of the way place to hide and observe. Then from his hiding place he will keep an eye out for trouble in the form of a knives patrol.

You continue to discuss options for how to stay inconspicuously in the tunnel after the shops close.

Wilford asks about staying with Three Bits, although Toston is dubious. There's been no indication that she lives nearby, and she may not want company, considering her line of work.

Toston, meanwhile, tries to find a place to conceal himself. You find a very nice gnome-sized nook to conceal yourself in. Of course, it won't do for the rest of the party, but you could probably pass the night unseen there.

Wilford and Var urge Avin to take advantage of Wendy's regard for him, but the mage is unenthusiastic at the prospect. Alizar urges him to reconsider.

Just at that moment, Wendy herself steps out of her shop, places a "Closed" sign on the door, and locks the door with a key she carries. Spotting your group, she gives you a cheery wave.

Avin glares at Talanthrel as if the man had betrayed some deep trust in an unspoken pact. Nevertheless he still found himself shuffling forward mumbling words to himself, trying to figure out exactly what to say to the woman.

The short trek was not enough and the wizard ends up sputtering what he can manage.

"W-W-We wou-wou-woul-wou-ould li-k-ke t-to know i-i-if you-ou..."

He was getting nowhere fast.

Toston says to those who did not approach Wendy, "I found a place small enough for me to hide in that would allow me to observe what is going on, however if I stay out here all night I will not regain the ability to cast the spells that I have used today and I may be fatigued tomorrow. I can do this if absolutely necessary, but if we get into a scrap then I will be a lot less effective."

Speaking to Toston, Var says "we may have to take that risk. We don't have much to go on right now, other than this scrap of cloth. It would be quickest if we could catch this ghost in the act." Watching Avin flounder churns Var's stomach, and he says to Alizar and Toston "Excuse me, I suppose I should help our Wizard friend, since I pushed him into this."

Walking up to join Wilford and Avin, Var chimes in "Ms. Wendy, we'd like to try and catch sight of this 'Ghost' that's been haunting Clover Way. You've been one of the nicer people we've met in the City Below, so Avin was hoping you'd let us set up a stakeout in your shop overnight." (Diplomacy: 2 HA!) Var tries to smile at the end of his request, but it comes out looking more like an orcish snarl.

Toston tells the others about the hiding place he found for himself.

Meanwhile, Avin does his best to speak to the pretty shop-girl. It does not go well. Wilford is able to help a little; Var helps not at all. Alizar and Talanthrel wait to see what will happen.

"Oh," Wendy says. "Oh. Well, you see, the thing is, it's not my shop. I only work there. I don't think the owner would like it if I let you stay the night." She bites her lip, clearly torn about what to do. In the end, however, her need to keep her job outweighs her wish to spend more time with the fascinating adventuer. "I'm really sorry," she says. "But I can't let you stay here." Doubtfully, she adds, "Maybe Billy would let you stay in his shop?"

Based on what you know of Billy Brambleshire, you'd say the odds of this are not good. You can always ask, however.

'Well, that could have gone better', thought Alizar. Options were running low, as was the sun over the Horizon. Chances that Billy would be any more help were low.
He turned to Toston. "Get ready to spend the night in the alley way friend."

Alizar hurried forward to intercept Wendy before she could get too far, putting on his best 'Bed side manner'.
"Wendy, wait."
Alizar lowered his voice, " I know you hardly know any of us, and this is putting you in a precarious position, but we really need to stay in your shop tonight. I can tell you're a good woman, I can see it in your eyes. They're the path way to the soul they say, and I've seen enough souls in my travels to tell good from bad. I'm not asking you to fight a dragon or anything, and I can promise you that nobody will ever know we were there. We will be long gone before morning, but we are out of options."
Alizar gently brushed a lock of hair away from Wendy's eyes, and turned her towards Avin.
"We need your help, Avin, needs your help, he is just too proud to admit it. He has not stopped talking about you all this day, and I think he feels like if he pushes you into this, he would be imposing too much on you. Help us Wendy, you're out only hope..."

After Alizar tries a last ditch effort to get Wendy's help, Toston takes the cleric aside and asks,
"Alizar, can you do anything about fatigue? If I spend the night in the hiding spot can you cure it? I will only be able to cast a single spell tomorrow if you do as I ask and I'm thinking the spell will most likely need to be shield. I am also a monk, but my martial prowess would be largely impacted if I am fatigued."

"If this doesn't work out I'm thinking we should take a section of the city and separate. Stay within 30 feet of each other. Just enough to be available if something happens. Well, we could even surprise and surround someone. If someone gets caught at least we could reason that we got lost. If we stay in a group it will look suspicious."

Alizar makes a last-ditch effort to try to get permission to stay the night in the shop.

"Oh." Wendy hesitates. "Oh. Um..." She looks over at the group, then replies to Alizar, keeping her voice low. "I mean, if it was just Avin, or I guess you and Avin, that would probably be okay. But, there are six of you." She drops her voice to a whisper. "And one of you is an orc!"

[OOC: With a little bit of work, you think you could persuade Wendy to let two or maybe three of you spend the night in the shop. But not all of you; she's too concerned about the mess you might make.]

Meanwhile, Talanthrel is looking for a way to get above street level. The problem with that is that you are actually below street level, in the old sewer tunnels. There isn't a lot of head room down here. Looking along the row of shops, you can see that their front walls blend right into the arched ceiling of the tunnel. There is no "on top" of these buildings, unless it's on the street above.

Var looks around for a possible hiding spot, but comes up blank.

Wilford offers an alternate plan; spread out and try to cover more area.

Alizar smiled and placed a hand on Wendy's shoulder, he regretted telling this woman a bold face lie, playing on her emotions. That ate at him a little bit. Maybe this city was starting to get to him. He had to shake that off though, deal with the penance portion later.
"Thank you Wendy. Just Avin and I then. I will go tell the others."

Alizar hurried back to the group.
"Ok, here is the deal. Wendy has agreed to let Avin and myself spend the night in the shop if we choose to."
Alizar turned to Toston, "I can't do anything about your fatigue unfortunately. I am still learning the skills required for that form a therapy. However, if you hide in the spot you found, and we stay in the shop, the three of us could cover this area, while the rest of the group patrols the next section. Don't push yourself though, you're not going to do anyone any good if you're dead. I don't really like the idea of splitting up, but I am running out of ideas."

Var frowns at Wendy's reluctance to let six armed strangers sleep in a shop she doesn't own. "Look fellas, maybe we head back to Marsh House for the night and regroup. Other than catching this ghost red handed, our next best leads are finding where the paint on this gauze came from; or tracking down the House of Silver. What do we say to a nice scorpion dinner and a little ale and we figure out our next move?"

And yet they still had a job to do. He nods grimly not liking the sound of it but liking the alternatives even less.

Avin directs his question at Alizar, the elf having proved he's a much better speaker than the wizard.

"I think Var has the right of it. Both my martial and magical abilities would be greatly hampered by spending the night awake and while I could stay the night in my hiding spot, I would still be alone if anything did go wrong. If I was in the hidey hole and 3 of our number were in Alphonse's could they hear me if I needed help? Furthermore, what would those of us not in the hiding spot or Alphonse's be doing? Don't the Knives patrol the entirety of the city below? Can anyone of us besides Wil or Alizar sell a knive patrol on being lost? I think the risk is too great for the potential reward. Mayhap we could find a blood witch to brew us some potions of reduce person or buy a wand to do the trick? That way someone else besides me could potentially take a turn in the hiding spot? However, for tonight let us retire to the Marsh House and we can strategize on how to best continue the investigation tomorrow? Mayhap we leave Wendy directions to the Marsh House in case anything else develops down here overnight? Surely a single night isn't going to make much difference when the so called ghosts have been at it for weeks? Still though, better safe than sorry." Toston proposes

After discussing your options, you realize that the best plan may be to rest and re-group.

Accordingly, you all return to Marsh House, where you sample the scorpion meat. It's not bad. It was inexpertly butchered, which may have affected the flavor, but still it's decent fare.

You are able to get a full night's rest, and everybody gets their spells back.

Wil mumbles while they leave Below. As annoying as it is having the dead talk to him all the time. They are a quite useful tool. "Just makes me like Below so much," he says to himself sarcastically. He does enjoy the rest and the scorpion meat. Outside of Below and next morning the noise in his head continues to stay quiet. He can hear faint mumbling but nothing he can pick out.

Var enjoys his Scorpion pleased with his, admittedly, amatuer job of butchery. He chats with the men for a bit, getting to know the newcommer and swapping a few stories from the road. As he reties to his hammock, he tosses a few spare bits of scorpion to a stray dog he spots snifing around in the street.

The next morning after a bath and a shave Var is ready to go.

"So what should our plan for the day be, men? Check in on the City Below, see if there were any sightings, then try to track down this fixer that hired those 'house of silver' thugs?"

The nights rest did Alizar well. He did not realize how tired he was after yesterdays events. The meal was acceptable, not the best scorpion he had ever tasted, but you could live off it. It was good to spend an evening getting to know the crew, trust was essential, but was also something earned. Alizar would see if it was something he could manage in the days to come.

"Well, I highly doubt we are going to get any info from anyone below, even if they HAD seen something. So I would say that tracking down this 'fixer', if the best course of action. Do we have any useful leads on where to start looking?"

"Apparently Stubby is a fixer who works primarily with the Keys, but not exclusively. The person who gave us this information says they found in The Midnight Bazaar." Toston says, "I guess that means we either go to the Bazaar or wherever the Keys like to hang out, if we are looking for Stubby. I wonder why they call him Stubby?"
