Mhalice!


Breathing Space (DM SteveK)

It was a running fight, but the Iron Adventurers seem to have found some breathing space.

Restlin takes a moment to thank Wardd. He casts a couple small spells that don't seem to attract any attention, then looks about for danger. He doesn't see any.

Katinka doesn't put her guard down for a second, scanning the area for danger. I'm r something interesting, that would work too! Both the fountain and light music seem to be powered by magic. The Mythal that is all around Fae Skimeir makes Detecting Magic with her Arcane Sight all but useless, but as the halfling gets closer, she can see it is a separate and harmless piece of Permanent Predestidigitation that keeps the fountain running. The music seems to be a part of the Mythal itself!

Garrett lets off a light 'that was fun' and casually looks around the courtyard. Perhaps it is small and so I disturbed?

Zane helps Bosk back to his feet then resumes a sentry post, keeping his head above the intervening walls. There are no Golden Threads that travel through or near this courtyard, and the greedy monsters are, thankfully, elsewhere. All the dragon-blooded Minotaur can see of interest is the towering dagger-like shape of Mhalice's stronghold only a couple of blocks away.

Beri also settles a little, whispering in the language of air elementals He can't see any Golden Threads nearby or in the direction of Mhalice's Tower.

The music about the fountain is soothing and the water plays harmony. The heroes have been in Fae Skimeir long enough to have gathered some information about the place. A thought crossed each mind that they may be able to predict a little better on the effects of the Mythal, the Golden Threads, and even the music and lights if they put some clues together along with some speculation. It may assist in thier final push...

Sesha stares at Mhalice's tower. Goosebumps run down her skin, and she trembles a little. So much preparation had gone into this, and the Mythal was making a lot of it pointless.

If Mhalice had found a way to use her magic without fail here, then there was almost nothing Sesha could do if it came to a showdown between the two of them. Even now, assuming her magic worked, she could feel her thoughts becoming all anxious and jumbled. Would any of her plans even work?

"I won't know until we figure out exactly what we know."

Sesha thinks.

"I think the Mythal is some sort of attempt at non-violence. It gets agitated during outright aggression. That said, it doesn't just affect offensive magic, but also enhancing spells, as poor Bosk has repeatedly figured out."

She attempts a prestidigitation cantrip, and starts writing in the air with a glowy pink font.

1. Mythal gets more aggressive the long fighting continues.
2. It affects magic randomly.
3. Really weak magic seems to be excluded.

I keep going back to what we were told about not being greedy... with the random nature of the Mythal it's hard to tell what's random and what's cause and effect. I assume any action on the Mythal's part is caused by the same thing, and the result is random... but I couldn't say for sure.

Beri ponders what he knows about nature and how their behaviors might be effecting the behavior of the Mythal. He also uses what he knows about the nature of the arcane elements to see if that provides any clues.

The horned cleric thinks back to his studies. While Beri tends to study these things more than him, his focus as a Grim and a cleric is much different a druid's would be. He could get lucky (natural 20) and have stumbled across just something helpful in the past.
Let's try to think fast, then head out... hopefully those following us will have thinned enough in numbers that they will be happy with the treasure they won and head home, or at the very least be injured enough that they are easily dealt with should their greed conquer their wits. But that's not a risk worth taking with the castle so near.

The heroes take a breather, and the fountain and music make a beutiful counterpoint. As the brains think of the Mythal, sparkling lights in yellows and silver sparkle around the fountain.

The heroes realize that the Fae Skiemir Mythal is the most advanced Mythal ever created in the Wold. It, however, has been out of control since the 2nd age. They know it has shown the following powers:

1) It “reacts” in random ways to use of magic.
2) It logs who enters and exits the city according to the magic they carry.
3) It creates the MIST that does not allow any to leave the city without assistane.

When any of the following occurs, the Mythal may activate:
1) When a 2nd level spell or equivalent ability is cast/ used.
2) Each time a +2 weapon or other magic crits, or intelligent weapon activate a special ability.
3) Even when active, it will be 50/50 if althe Mythal would affect a spell/effect.

The Mythal personifies through music and lights and the heroes can assess when the Mythal may start by paying attention to if the Mythal is payday my attention to them. (Move action Perception DC20 to assess the Mythal)

The heroes also realize that they know when the Golden Threads happen. That when a creature dies, the Threads burst from. Where they died to where they keep thier treasure. The more powerful the deceased, the more Threads but the longer it takes for the Threads to form. And in a greedy city such as this, the Threads attract monsters in mere minutes.

Garrett thinks hard, but all he knows is he is hungry.

Sesha tries to gauge the distance to Mhalice and her tower.

"We should try and cast any lengthy augmentation spells now, rather than later. Who knows when we will be under the gun again and have a chance to peacefully watch and see when the Mythal is looking."

She stares at the tower. So much of her motivation lay ahead, she was kind of scared to confront it. So much could go wrong, and things had to be perfect to go right. She didn't want anyone to die, and for her own reasons, it was important that Mhalice be included among them.

"Or maybe, we should like, hang back and talk about it for awhile? I mean.. there's no rush, right?"

Restlin figures that it is not so much the Mythal not noticing, but more if the heroes are able to be in harmony with the fickle intelligent magic.

Some heroes are worried about time with the duration of spells, especially Zane.

Sesha keeps her thoughts to herself on other matters.

Katinka and a hungry Garrett look at Mhalice's Tower, a bare quarter mile away. Just a couple of streets. A courtyard or two. And then the main doors of the huge tower...

The light, soothing music continues merrily, and it appears the next move is the heroes'.

Bosk ponders what Restlin and the others have gleamed and tries to determine if there is a way to prevent the gold threads from binding to the group after a creature dies.

Realizing his belt is still intact he belatedly turns to Tink. Tanks for helping me dodge that earlier attack. Your help was the only thing keeping me from losing my belt of strength. I have a feeling I will be needing it here.

"I would love to rest and prepare some spells, but all the long duration ones that have already been cast and in effect don't seem affected by the mythal. That includes the Weave Elements. That would suggest that it is the casting or activation of a spell that triggers the mythal."

Tink takes a deep, cleansing breath. "I'm ready to make the push when you guys are"

The magepriest slips his arm around Sesha's shoulder, then confidently strolls down the street towards certain doom. On the way, he keeps his eyes open for trouble. "Last chance to tell me how crazy you are about me before we walk into mortal danger, babe. Anything you wanna say?" He doesn't look down at her, but he's grinning like an idiot.

Sesha sighs, her apprehensions melting away.

"How is it that you alone sought fit to approach me like this? No one else bothered to peek under the eye-patch, Mage-Priest."

She revels in the moment of affection for a second more, then rips herself away and spins to face him, pointing a finger his direction.

"I'll say this! Don't die, Mage-Priest. Wardd might not let you come back, as lucky as you've been to have a fair maiden like me fawning on you. And don't scar up that face either. Y'zargo might even be prettier than you are anyways!"

She smiles a little.

"Seriously though. If you died, I'd be pretty inconsolable for like, ten or fifteen minutes, however long it would take to start yelling at Gargul to give you back. Now watch the Mythal with me and help me time these spells..and everyone else, come here. Mama Sesha has goodies."

Sesha will use Restlin to time her next few spells, since his perception is high enough to auto-pass the mythal checks and we aren't in combat.

The heroes consider the music and light show of the Mythal and determines that the fickle magic is not really interested right now. But on the Stoneskin on Bosk, the Mythal suddenly takes notice! The music changes from a lilting lullaby and quickens with violins starting a 'Toccata and Fugue'. The lights also change from soothing, cool colors to flashes of orange and yellow.

Bosk's Stoneskin changes and instead becomes a Silence spell!

The Mythal is awake in this courtyard.

A mis-interpretation. The rules for the Mythal are:

1. At the beginning of every conflict, there is a 50% chance per any activation of a spell or effect 2nd level or above of the Mythal noticing.

The Perception DC 20 is to see if the Mythal has noticed yet.

2. Once the Mythal notices, then every activation of a spell or effect 2nd level or above has a 50% chance of having a Mythal-altering effect.

There is no roll to find out if this is going to occur or not.

The heroes aren't able to 'time' spells when the Mythal isn't looking.

As Bosk's words are suddenly silenced, Garret shakes his head. He mumble, "This is just crazy. I am so ready to..." He stops mid-sentence and looks around, wondering if the magic can "hear" him. He smiles and continues nervously, "But it is a pleasant place, and the music is very nice."

Bosk shakes off the silence (assuming the DC is the same as before). I do not have luck with spells aroud the Mythal, but at least I can deal with the silence. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems the first spell has a 50% chance of waking the mythal up. What could Mhalice plan be? Does she have a way around it? Could she be laying an ambush where she casts the first spell and it is difficult for us to retaliate? What could we possibly do about this?

Restlin shakes his head. "The Mythal is much, much more powerful than any of us, and I'd eat my hat if Mhalice managed to overpower it. She may have traps set for us, but when it comes to casting spells or using items she's found, she'll probably have to follow the same rules."

The magepriest is still moving forward towards the tower. "Thanks for the resist, love. I seem to attract lots of acid every time we throw down..."

If Beri misinterpreted the rules he will be happier than ever to be wrong, but if the others seem to agree he will make sure everyone starts running ASAP (unless otherwise directed)

The heroes talk some more. Beri suggests that the Mythal has been responsible for sending monsters after the group. Upon further reflection, the heroes figure that that is not the case. None of the monsters were controlled, led, or influenced by the Mythal. They seem motivated mostly by thier own greed.

And while that greed seems to have a near-magical impulse, and the Golden Threads that appeared whenever a creature died within the walls of Fae Skimier are certainly magical, that doesn't seem to be associated with the music, lights, and spell-warping effects of the Mythal.

Unless I'm mistaking about the rules and this would trigger the Mythal, but since this is a class ability and not a spell I believe it's not influenced the Mythal.

Mhalice's Tower (DM SteveK)

The heroes feel they have a handle on what the Mythal will or will not do, and when.

Beri takes a gamble and it pays off as he transforms to an earth elemental and the Mythal... Does nothing. It did not react to a supernatural power!

The Iron Adventurers begin to move, down alleys of white marble, across forums of pristine grass. The Mythal, upset at the spellcasting in the fountain square, slowly settles down as nothing more happens. By the time the heroes have arrived at the solid walls of the tower you have been told Mhalice resides, the music once more is only light and the lights are cool and soothing.

The heroes encountered no monsters, though they can hear conflict a couple blocks over and in other areas of the City.

At Mhalice's Che's Tower, the team arrives where there doesn't seem to be any entrances anywhere; no doors, windows, or any opening from this side.

More than likely we are just on the wrong side of the wall, were we told anything about this specific wall? Regardless, if we can get in this wall somehow it may be better to do that than through a heavily fortified front door. I have stoneshape prepared, I can likely get us in if I can cast the spell... but there is a 50/50 chance of that ending poorly before we are even in the tower.

Oh, in addition to illusions and trap be sure to keep an eye out for a hidden door. Assuming this isn't the front entrance I wouldn't be surprised if Malice or one of the previous tennants had an escape route out the back.

The heroes look around. It is a large tower, hundreds of feet in circumference. Looking up, the tower's top floors are smashed into rubble, but are still a hundred feet high. Nearby, the top of the tower lays across the grass of the courtyard.

Magic, traps, or secret doors aren't found, but a little searching to the left and right finds broad steps that lead up to a set of patinaed bronze doors.

Light music and little blue lights flit about the heroes. The greenish doors stand closed.

Tink tries to think back to the last time that unguarded closed doors led to anything good. The fact that these ones are green doesn't make her feel any better either.

While Restlin and Sesha scout upwards, Tink takes a closer look at the door. Are there any handles? A lock? What are they made of? Could a halfling with no upper-body strength possibly open them?

She reaches out to touch the doors, and if nothing bad happens, even presses her ear against them to try and hear if there is anything inside.

Those doors look very solid, but be very careful not to make too much noise, we don't want to bring a fight upon ourselves before we are ready.

If we want to go up and over I can change back to a flying form. Our magic is currently limited though, would we be able to carry everyone if we went that route?

Restlin and Sesha begin to fly upwards to inspect the ruined tower top, encouraged by Bosk and Zane. They don't rise more than 30 feet when Restlin spots another tower about a mile away. Even from this distance, the very, very large red dragon is impossible to miss against the white marble of the city. And it seems to be looking in the direction of Mhalice's Tower.

Katinka inspects the heavy bronze doors that are patinaed in a dull green. Solid, the halfling notes that besides battle-damage, these are the first things in Fae Skimier that seem affected by the passage of time: only doors exposed to the elements for years would get that color.

She touches. Nothing. She listens. Nothing.

Wait, the doors have aged? Is it possible that this area isn't governed by the same laws? That would make the tower a perfect place for a trap! It cold also explain how Mhalice was able to send that... a dragon! Watching this tower?! If that magnificent thing is watching the tower there is a good chance it's either Mhalice's watch dog, or her jailer. Either way, if it's watching it knows we aren't with her otherwise we wouldn't have searched for a back door.
Beri uses detect magic to see if the tower is different from the surrounding ares, and to try to determine if the traps have been set in wait for them... and he will try to prevent anyone from opening the door if he detects magic.

Restlin and Sesha rapidly descend until the far tower with its red dragon is lost behind a lower but closer wall. It looks like that dragon would only be able to see if someone was about 30 feet up.

Sesha and Katinka feel that time is of the essence and encourages Bosk and Zane to pull open the doors.

(DM Posting for Bosk). The great Minotaur steps forward, but pauses on the call from Beriothian. The Druid is worried about a trap and that those doors would be outside of the time weirdness of Fae Skimeir.

Detect Magic reveals the Mythal Is just as strong here as anywhere else.

A growing concern over a wandering ( or not so wandering) monster starting another chain fight moves Restlin to jump up and try to pull open the doors just before Zane moves to do the same. The doors have no obvious latch, but pulling on the handle makes them open smoothly without problems... To reveal a wall of gray. Restlin immediately identifies it as a Forbiddance spell! The Tower sealed against planar travel; warded against a set target or they are wounded.

Good thing telepathy still works, so the two heroes can warn thier pals on the outside. Garrett and Restlin find themselves in a large foyer with six different sets of doors and two lavish stone staircases going up to the next level. There is no one else in the foyer.

Do you think she was trying to trick me?" He waits for the others to arrive as he says, "I think we go for the stairs. If I were hiding here, I'd want a nice view of the city."

Dispel = 25.

AFAIK there's two issues to resolve with Forbiddance.

1. The Dispel check dispels a 6th level spell cast by up to a 19th level caster.
2. The Dispel check ALSO fails based on a line in Forbiddance, which states that dispel checks from lower level casters automatically fail.

So what Sesha is trying to confirm is whether Mhalice's CL is higher than theirs.

DM. SteveK. Sesha doesn't have line of sight to the Forbiddance spell without first going through or getting rid of the Private Sanctum spell.

Forbiddance? Well, there goes any chance of summoning... not that I'm in a hurry to use my magic today.

Hopefully I can prepare myself against the effects a little against the effects of this spell before entering... what makes this really evil is that the knowing makes this soooo much worse! I'd ask if the password happened to be written down somewhere in there, but if there was I'm sure it would just be the trigger to an even worse trap... well, here it goes...

Sesha tries to dispel the Forbiddance but has to dispel the Private Sanctum first. She succeeds, and the veil lifts without the Mythal changing its time or colors.

Sesha looks at Restlin, then the others. She knew she wouldn't be able to discern a lie from Mhalice against the truth. So instead, she gives her own requirements.

"Anything? Return with me to It'lal. Confess your sins against the monks of Wayfarer and your plot with Khar Aven to pervert the magics of Ma'ab. Face Twilight Elf justice, whatever it may be, and succumb to their judgement."

She narrows her stare.

"The only caveat I offer is this. If they sentence you to death, I'll fight against it. If they persist, I'll fight to the death myself to prevent it. Serenbeth would not show me her favor if the blood of the captured was on the hands of her highest Witch."

She offers a hand to the only other Drow she had ever met outside of It'lal. The only one to ever grow up, like her, away from the structured families and castes of the Twilight Elves, that she knew.

Tink has never met Mhalice before. She isn't quite sure what she was expecting. Well, she WAS expecting Sesha to be more volatile. But right now the Bloodwitch was the picture of restraint.

She's a little surprised that Sesha didn't ask any questions of her nemesis. Why did Mhalice come here? What is she so scared of that she would do anything?

Most of the heroes defer to Sesha.

Sesha, very surprisingly, offers a deal!

Beri wants more answers. The giant red dragon outside is your jailer? Why are you here? Why do you need our help? And how did you get that message to use in the first place?
....

Mhalice listens to Sesha and bristles. She angrily gestures and openly laughs at the 'justice' of the Twilight Elves. "Justice is death, and an end to everything!" She spits at Sesha. But the Iron Adventurer continues her idea, and the vehemence dies in Mhalice's eyes. "No death? And you would ... would champion me for this?" All of the heroes can see Mhalice is seriously considering...

Mhalice doesn't immediately answer Sesha's offer. Instead she speaks to Beri. "My jailer? Ha! Fae Skimeir is the jailer and we are all prisoners! I can't get out. Vridris the Red can't get out. Nathador the demon can't get out! We each carve our own boundaries and watch each other for the least weakness to pounce. It is no life here; it is a nightmare. I had thought that I could find power to destroy you but became trapped. It was only when I did a completely altruistic act that I was able to even get a message through the Mythal by helping the King Rhemoraz to escape. But no one is interested in helping me escape. No one but perhaps ... you?"

The scene stays that way for a moment. Two. And then...

Suddenly 4 armored minotaurs burst from a downstairs door and 4 wizardly elves arrive at the second floor balcony. "Mhalice! What about us! You promised us riches", shouts one of the elves from the balcony. "Promised us glory! And you betray us to these... These.... Thieves??? You can die and these thieves with you!"

The minotaurs Rush the room and are within melee range of the team!

Sesha is quick to realize that the eight newcomers were once Mhalice's companions, and that they no longer seem to be. She tries to make sense of it, but continues her own personal test and faith and trusts Mhalice implicitly.

"If this is a trap, it's a good one. If it's not, what are we dealing with? Those mages know you. What kind of casters are they? Wizards? Sorcerers? Specialists? Anything helps!"

Sesha glares daggers at the Elven mages, seething with anger even through a charming smile.

"I owe you all my thanks! I've never known the desire to purposefully harm another living being until I met Mhalice! She taught me the desire the completely punish someone without mercy, and now here she is, right next to me, and it looks like she and I are walking out of the land of our ancestors as rivals instead of merely enemies...

Sesha glances at the other dark elf. There was a lot of pent up anger here, but her prayers to Serenbeth had made it clear that capital punishment of a surrendered party was never okay. She searched her own feelings and found this was the best possible outcome. Mhalice had pushed her to become stronger, something she otherwise had little motivation to do. She didn't particularly value power for it's own sake. She needed purpose, and Mhalice had provided it.

"..Thanks to that, I needed something to vent on, and you lot are just in time!"

Sesha steps back and studies the situation before doing much else.

Mhalice turns around, surprise written on her face for a split moment, then she starts talking.

"Yes, help me escape Fae Skimeir and yes to everything!" She says in a rush of adrenaline. " The Mino's are a team I recruited for some muscle, nice heavy hitters and good bodyguards. The elves were another team, all sorcerers, don't know bloodlines but mostly Evocations. Damaging spells that I can't do. "

(Katinka can get her spell up successfully. All four minotaurs are on the stairway side of the wall and Mhalice and the heroes on the front door side. There is room to the left and right to run around the wall or jump/ fly over. Assuming the wall is 20' high x 75' wide because of the large minotaurs.)

Restlin nods at Tink. He was about to do the same thing. "Nice move, lady. Let's see if we can't do something about those elves too, but first..." The magepriest pulls his swift rod from its home in his quiver and slams it into the ground at his feet in a single motion. A shockwave of his own nervous energy flows outwards into his companions.

He then takes a preserved squid tentacle from his pouch, hurls it to the ground, and stomps on it. Almost instantly, the balcony erupts with the things.

Sesha doesn't bother with spellcasting. She figures Mhalice shouldn't either, but she's not going to believe their relationship is at the point where she should order the other dark elf around.

"I'm focusing on spell defense. Mhalice, your better at this than anyone else, so unless you have a way to beat the Mythal when casting, we might be best served stopping whatever spells get through the tentacles."

Sesha readies an action to counterspell any of the mages that seem able to cast despite the tentacles. She will use Dispel Magic if she has to.

The Force Wall goes up.

The Black Tentacles erupt among two of the sorcerers, catching them in its inky tendrils.

Zane grows, Garrett prepares to defend, and Beri makes sure Mhalice doesn't betray them on the heroes' side. Bosk also braces to fight any Minotaur that dares to move past the wall.

Sesha announces her intentions to block incoming spells.

Mhalice herself nods. "You have been learning some of the problems of our home country too", she says wryly. "But I have a spell that I know will stop my allies-turned-assassins. This!"

Restlin, Sesha, Beri, and Katinka can see what she does but not what it is... It is a new spell. And the Mythal reacts, martial music rings out and the lights move to a swirling reds and orange. Mhalice's spell goes off without being affected by the Mythal,however, and in the center of the foyer, a five foot golden globe appears that detects as high level of general magic. It also sends out one golden thread and one illusionary golden thread Until there are 40 threads shooting in random directions on the same horizontal axis!

Mhalice smiles evilly at her former allies. "You know what this is, don't you? Now every greedy creature in the Wold is going to be following those threads and meet. Right. Here. So, do you want to stay and fight or save your skin?
......

Looks of horror are on the minotaurs and elves, and they turn and sprint from the room, completely ignoring any defense. The only two that are still there and they are in the Black Tentacles.

"OK, quick!" Says Mhalice, my treasure trove is one level down. We have about three minutes before every creature in Fae Skimeir will be fighting over what's left. Let's grab what we can and then get out of this city!"

Garret shakes his head as he sees the globe and golden tentacles appear. He mumbles, "Darn magic users." He watches the others run off and quickly moves to the stairs to head downstairs. He wonders if by "treasure," she means "food."

Restlin lets loose a low whistle. "This chick does not mess around," he says to no one in particular. He wonders what could be down there to make even attempting to loot the place worthwhile. He uses his swift rod to cast expeditious retreat on himself (base move speed of 90 now) and tears down the stairs. He wants to be out of this place within a minute, but loot is loot. He sets his keen eyes to the task of finding the most valuable (but portable) stuff to take (perception: 30).

A lot could happen in 5 minutes. She considers asking Mhalice to skip the loot and run, but there's no point in seeing just how much she can influence her rival. She was still somewhat beside herself that everything was going to plan thus far.

As they escape, Sesha pulls the Sovereign Glue from her pack, and grips it tightly in her hand.

As the enemies run Beri follows the others and quickly looks around both for signs this is a trap and for the the most useful items to take with them. In a city who's whole civilization is treasure obsessed there is sure to be some amazing things tucked away in here, and he knows the best items won't necessarily be the easiest to spot.

The stairs leading down open to a huge room, and what a room!

The floors are carpeted with piles of gold and platinum, the walls covered in art, racks of magical swords, axes and armor. In one alcove are several bows and quivers full of magical arrows, in another there are shelves with hats, cloaks, shirts, pants, belts, and boots. Mixed in at random along the floor and walls are gleaming magical items, a gem here, an iron flask there, a wand a little ways away. Verily, a treasure trove of the ages!

Grab and go. How long do you dare stay?

Mhalice is very clear that the monsters are coming. The longer they take to grab treasure, the more will be out there. The more treasure they take, the larger the Golden Trail they will leave! However, they need the money for helping people in the Wold AND the more they take will in a weird way benefit those trapped in Fae Skimeir. “There ARE people at home that need what this can buy. These folks are just sick. Feel no need to leave anything for them!"

She hesitates a moment, and then whispers to Restlin and Sesha. "And I have an escape tunnel that we can go when the first monsters break down the doors upstairs. "

Garret gasps as he sees the massive amounts of treasure. His first thought is just to run to get out of this place, but it does seem to make sense to grab something. He looks around and tries to get more unusual, but small items -- gloves, goggles, rings, and the like. He only spends the minimum amount of time, not even really checking the items, just making a grab or two and shoving some things in his belt pouch.

Beri, having gotten an amazing view of the room before will quickly case detect magic and grab anything he saw that is of great value yet happens to not be magical that will lure a hoard of enemies to chase after them... perhaps some good old fashioned platinum and gems, as well as a backpack he can throw over his shoulder or a quiver that he dumps the magical arrows out of. He will also grab the flask on the ground.

Sesha dismisses most of the magical items without a second glance. She is still choosing to trust Mhalice without question. She does not doubt Little Spirit's guidance.

"Mhalice. Show me something that is made by our blood-kin when the empire was united. I don't care about it's power or value. If it's powerful or not, I want something from this place in case I can never return to the lands of my mothers mothers."

Sesha watches the others, curious if Restlins caution is the wise choice. Well, wisdom was never her own strong suit.

Zane agrees with Restlin, he'll wait as well, and if she does take stuff, Zane will go after gems and non-magical items, counting on cash value and knowing that magic attracts monsters....

Mhalice is about to start stuffing handfuls of gems into her pockets when Sesha calls out her request. The drow witch pockets two handfuls of diamonds and rubies, then idly grabs an Efficient quiver and stuffs it with magical wands and rods, while moving down a row of shelved treasures. It takes a minute, but Mhalice returns to Sesha with a music box. The edges are Intricately carved in platinum, each leg depicting the natural wonders of a different environment; underwater, forest, the sky, and underground. The top, bottom, and sides are unusual too; made of miniature, scintillating permanent walls of force! "Here", she says perfunctorily, it's worth little except to those who want to remember what the elves were like before... Well before."

Some heroes, especially Katinka, have already been grabbing treasures; gems, magic, mostly light but expensive pieces that are easy to carry. And the rest, led by Restlin, digs in.

All too soon, the Tower above the team *BOOMS* like a hollow tube. The monsters are here!

Mhalice leads the way to a side tunnel. "This way, quickly!" As much as the heroes need Mhalice to lead the way out of the trap that is the Tower, Mhalice needs the heroes to get HER out of the trap that is Fae Skimeir! She doesn't run ahead, keeping with the lead heroes until they pop up in a building very near the courtyard where the heroes had paused.

Looking back towards what was once Mhalice's Tower, it is TEEMING with monsters! The red dragon and a whole swarm of harpies are battling flying demons above the tower, while every sort of monster is about the base, smashing holes into the tower with as much enthusiasm as each other. All of the masters are following those Golden Threads to the Tower.

The heroes see one other, more disturbing revelation... They are now creating a Golden Thread of thier own! Even now, some monsters notice. it is now a foot race and rearguard action to get to the Mist and satyrs before being overwhelmed!
