Sesha casts a spell to speak with Little Spirit, but she doesn't get a response until later that night. Sesha dreams of a gray realm with pulsing red lines; the Shadow Realm. And Seaha stands with a ghostly woman who doesn't speak but ideas form in the drow witch's mind. 'Prepare for the unexpected, my strong one. None of your companions have guessed the nature of Fae Skiemir, and you will need to be prepared to be... Flexible in your thinking. The dream slowly fades.

Restlin, Garrett (smelling a little like a wet dog), and Bosk stand ready near the gate and at the edge of a forest.

Beriothian is very concerned about Mhalice and her known powers. He carefully looks around, gauging the natural world around him, and he feels... Alive. This forest is part of Ma'ab's own forest. Beriothian is certain as a mortal can be that he will not be able to be surprised while he is in this forest. Which may be that he is not surprised about what happens next...

The quiet of the Forest is broken by a yowl and scream and a group of Satyrs charge into the clearing, only to pull up short at seeing the heroes! “Do you mind?”, one says crossly, “we’re being chased by…”

The Satyr never gets to finish his sentence, for another series of yowls rends the air along with a cloud of heavy boney spikes and the Satyr goes down in a pool of blood! Bounding from the trees are a group of Manticores! One roars at the Satyrs, “Thieves! After you die we will eat your liver!” And another to the heroes, “Begone, you are not our prey today. Back off and we will tell you what every adventurer wants to know when in this land.”

Another Satyr shouts back, “You are the thieves, and we can also tell the adventurers who help us how to get into Fae Skiemir!”

It looks like the heroes have bare seconds to make allies... Or enemies!

Garret steps back as the group enters the clearing. He nods when Tink suggests a temporary truce, but stands ready, slowly moving back and forth.

Manticores are inherently evil creatures. Satyrs are not, but they're generally troublesome nonetheless.

Of course, Restlin can be troublesome too. He hopes Tink's call for diplomacy works, but readies a fireball just in case.

Beriothian, not able to really speak in this form, thinks back to what he knows of this land to determine whether both are natural inhabitants, and if one is more likely to have been swayed to the side of Mhalice. He also tries to read the faces of the group to determine whether any of the group shows signs of guilt/deception from being the original thief. He will sign if one group is clearly in the wrong.

He makes sure he is slightly off the ground, but in reach of his companions, and that he is not in an aggressive position.

Bosk smiles the sight. Although only he would know this, this is exactly how the Iron Adventurer's first got together and formed an adventuring group...though only he is left of the original group. Drawing his weapon he hoes into total defense. (+4 dodge bonus to AC)

Zane stays quiet

Katinka offers to cease hostilities and have a temporary truce, yet neither seems likely since one of the satyrs are already laying dead in the clearing!

Garrett moves back a bit and goes into a stance to make him harder to target.

Restlin is willing to let Katinka try diplomacy, but readies a fireball to target a couple manticores... just in case.

Beriothian tries to think of likelihood of Mhalice interference, natural inhabitants, or looking for who is the liar, but the air elemental can't really tell. (Three DC20 Sense Motive checks in one round may learn more)

There are 12 Satyrs left and 10 Manticores, and neither side is interested in talking right now. The Satyrs fire arrows and a couple charge a now wounded manticore with daggers and their small horns, taking down one of the monsters.

The manticores continue to fight, several throwing tail spikes and half charging into melee with the satyrs. Two more satyrs go down.

And the aggressive action of the manticores triggers Restlin's itchy trigger finger, and two manticores are engulfed in a fireball! Both are still alive but burned.

The Satyrs cheer and the Manticores roar. And there is an answering roar from many throats from the forest... There are more of them. "Kill them all! Kill them all!" Is the shout.

While everyone is close, Zane casts a Haste spell on everyone.

She casts a Black Tentacles spell, hoping to ensnare as many manticores as possible whilst leaving the satyrs alone.

Shiny, make me smart, Restlin says telepathically before cracking his knuckles. "You beasts are out of your league," he states calmly as he removes his maximize rod from his quiver.

He takes a small, foul smelling ball from his pouch & shoves it on the tip of the rod. Pointing it at the manticores, he shouts "kablooie!" before it rockets at them, exploding among them.

Garret gasps at the appearance of the tentacles and then the massive fire explosion. He mumbles, "I sure hope we picked the right side." Avoiding the tentacles, Garret looks for a manticore that is injured and decides to move up and attack with nonlethal damage, just in case.

Beri casts Wind wall, creating a barrier in front of the IA that will deflect the spikes, and tries to time it so the it will be just behind the satyrs so they can cross through it after their next volley of arrows for the same protection (since they appear to be attacking before the manticores)

Sesha isn't particularly pleased with the hasty decision. Manticores were intelligent, and Satyrs were tricksters. They could have stolen something for sure, and incurred the law of the wild from the manticores.

Still, she didn't know enough to oppose her allies in the matter.

She casts Barkskin, but otherwise stays in a fairly neutral posture.

Zane starts the actions of the heroes by casting a Haste spell which gets each of the Iron Adventurers.

Katinka bites back a sarcastic retort, keeping it in her head while she brings a horde of Black Tentacles under two Manticores. Though large, the creatures are both agile and strong and the tentacles fail to grab either one! The little halfling looks about at the roaring and sees another double handful of Manticores arriving through the trees!

Restlin gets a little extra help and casts another fireball, this one is maximized and hits two unwounded Manticores. *Boom!* Neither is able to dodge and both are still alive... these are not your run-of-the-mill Manticores!

Garrett skips over to a manticore, it swipes at the bouncy ball of energy, misses, and is killed by Garrett's counterpunch!

Beriothian the air elemental casts a Wind Wall in front of the team, hoping that the Satyr's will also notice and utilize the spell for their own benefit. Of course, there's no tells no telling... Yet.

Sesha's pursed lips says she is thinking along the same lines as Katinka. But the threat doesn't look bad, so the witch casts a defensive spell.

Bosk holds his position, ready for any monster that gets too close!

The Satyr's launch another volley of arrows, and one was standing too near the wall and his arrow goes haywire! He bleats in surprise, then glee and shouts to the others while he skips through the Wind Wall. The others start a taunting bray at the Manticores, and the satyr arrows slay the other badly wounded manticore of Restlin's.

The Manticores are down three creatures in 12 seconds, and their morale is a little shakey. What's more, none of them are in melee. "Fine, you tricksy lot, hide behind the Noble Races today. But remember they never stay for long!" Even with the reinforcements coming from the forest, they are not willing to die for whatever the Satyr's stole. They turn tail and fly away as fast as their wings can go!

....

Seconds later, there are seven heroes and eight satyrs with five corpses in the clearing.

Looks like the heroes have the initiative...

"I think we're due an explanation as to what just happened" Tink says matter-of-factly. She's not particularly happy with what transpired. On one hand, the manticores accused the satyrs of theft. It would be wrong for a justicar to protect a thief. On the other hand, who knows what the laws of the land here are, or, exactly the circumstances of the 'theft'. Maybe the manticore killing the satyr was allowed by law, or considered fair retribution? She just doesn't have enough information at the moment.

"I'm Katinka Hushfoot. Justicar of Pantheon and proud member of the Iron Adventurers. Why were they chasing you? What was 'stolen'?"

She isn't prepared to explain why the IA are here just yet. She does send a telepathic message to Sesha however: "Are you able to do anything for the dead satyr? You know, as a gesture of goodwill to these guys. It might make them open up to us if they have information on you know who". Even telepathically, Tink isn't comfortable saying Mhalice's name to Sesha.

Bosk takes a blanket and a chain out of his bag. I am amazed the explosion did not damage this chain. Help me to wrap his spikes so he cannot shoot them, then we can chain it up.

hmm, I think I'll leave this wall up for the time being... just in case.
Beri hovers and watches the scene unfold. He isn't ready to return to human form just yet, prefering to stay prepared for another attack. He keeps an eye on the the subtle movement of the trees and an ear on the sounds, making sure the manticores truly are leaving and that no reinforcements are circling around to surprise them.

Beri and Zane keep watch to ensure the Manticores don't come back; vital and necessary. It looks pretty good that the forest is going to remain quiet.

Garrett confirms the manticore HE beat on is in fact only unconscious, and Bosk and the halfling truss up the lion-monster.

Sesha strides forward and crouches over the fallen Satyr, and it is his lucky day, for the Fey revives! Blinking, it looks up and it's eyes melt. "Are you an angel? Because I must be in heaven."

Katinka and Restlin confront the other Satyrs, paying careful attention to any motives.

The leader is pretty much infatuated with Sesha and in no condition to discuss anything other than amorous liaisons.

So it is another Satyr that speaks up. "Hey, ladies! You did us a great favor, maybe we can help you out too?", he says suggestively. "I am Palonius. I don't know what those idiot manticores were talking about, because we didn't steal anything from them. Playing in the forest, they pounced and started chasing us all over the place!"

Restlin has a hunch they are telling the truth.

Zane is a bit uncomfortable with the Satyrs, but continues to let those who usually do the talking, continue talking to them.
He twirls the kama all the while expecting trouble to arrive....

Tink looks very closely at Palonius. Fey were always tricky to deal with. "You didn't steal anything from them, or you didn't steal anything from anyone?" she asks playfully "Perhaps you borrowed something and they consider it stolen? And you mentioned something about helping us reach Fae Skiemir? Do you help many people reach it?"

Palonius and the other Satyrs laugh in genuine amusement. "She is a smart one, isn't she?", asks Palonius of the others, and the response is general agreement and a growing infatuation with the female halfling.

Another approaches closer, "Pay no attention to him, my love. I am Aristobulous, and will do anything you ask. The manticore tribe and we have a running animosity; we steal and harass each other all the time ".

Another pipes up. "And I am Valancines, but call me Val." The other satyrs snigger (in Fey, 'Val' is the word for 'power'). "We didn't steal or borrow anything lately. Just waited until they were getting amorous and 'suggested' that they would rather... Relax... By themselves. ". And the satyrs burst into uncontrollable peals of laughter!

"I'm' Arrianches". "Well my name is Salacious." "And I'm ..." The Satyrs all clamber for Katinka's attention, except for the one who is up and following Sesha wherever she goes. "Hi. Howyoudoin'? I, Damaldian, will do anything for you, my angel. "

When the Manticore comes to, he vacillates, lies, and tries to throw blame. The bottom line eventually comes out is although the 'cores were angry about the Satyrs' prank, the Spike Tail Tribe just likes to kill things and watch them bleed. But he quickly promises (falsely) that he had no intention of including any Noble Races. Another promise (true) is that he has no intention to confront any Noble Race for the rest of his life!

Well, this got ridiculous quickly. Guess that's what he gets for siding with the satyrs. He leans down to whisper in Damaldian's ear.

"You know, she has a budding coven looking for members. If you're so inclined to serve her, that may be an excellent way of doing it. If you're able to leave this place, seek out (insert flirty drow name here; can't remember his name) at the Iron Tower in Hook City. Tell him I sent you personally."

"Well, er, you see, um...." Tink feels the blood rush to her face as she uncontrollably starts blushing. The satyrs attention has completely thrown her. "It's, it's nice to meet you all". She fidgets with her hair and looks everywhere but at the satyrs.

All her life she has been 'the brainy one'. She was the kid in school who would spend any extra hours in the library, or studying on her own. Any attention she received from boys was usually in a teasing manner. She'd never recevied attention like THIS before.

Any follow-up questions Tink may have had for the satyrs are quickly forgotten as she struggles to recompose herself. "Get it together Katinka! If you can handle interdimensional dragons you can handle a pleasant conversation"

Sesha smiles, and is kind to Damaldian. Then when he makes his pledge, her demeanor changes, if only a little.

"If you'd do anything, then tell us how to find the Drow that's set up camp here."

She grins.

"If I would be your angel, and a life debt is something serious, dream of me. In the future, it will come, I can promise it. When it does, make your way to 5 Mile outside of Hook City. We can build something special together, if you accept."

Katinka is a little overwhelmed, not by the obvious attentions of most of the Satyrs, but the more intellectual adorations of Palonius! "I know a lot, smart lady, do not pay attention to these shallow creatures! Heroes only come here to go to Fae Skiemir, fight monsters and collect treasure. Fae Skiemir is full of evil creatures and treasures! Creatures continuously fight over the hoards of treasure in the city, and there is a precarious balance of power. When a fight happens, other creatures assume the fight is over treasure and that the winners will be wounded, so they home into to get their share. This often leads to many sides piling into huge running fights!"

Sesha and Restlin have the complete attention of a very infatuated Dalmaldian. "I have not seen any drow other than you, my angel. If your friend is in the forest, Ma'am would know. I can take you to Ma'am. If your friend is in yonder city... Fae Skiemir is a trap for the unwary. The Mythal has generated a MIST that keeps greedy and evil creatures inside the city. No magical transportation or extra-dimensional spaces are possible in the Mist. No magical communication or divination can pass through the Mist."

The majority of the Satyrs keep horse playing and singing praises, not only to Katinka but start in on Zane, Bosk (how strong, Manitaur!), Garrett (sharp eyes!). They pretty much ignore Beri-Air Elemental (Sense Motive DC20: they are figuring he is a summoned creature of one of the spellcasters). "Let's take them to Mother, let's take them to Ma'am! They can speak with her and she'll give them a hand!"

"After all", says Palonius, "you helped us so we should help you!"

Bosk stops when he hears the news about extradimensional space and non-magical transportation. Could you tell us more about this mist and its effects? Does it prevent the usage of bags of holding? Do you know what would happen if we bring one or a portable hole inside the city? What about flying, a ring of blinking and darkwalking (Grim SU, not the spell)? Are those able to be used inside the city?

Sesha sighs, feeling like there is nothing to do other than perhaps get some more information from the mother of these Satyrs.

Katinka and Restlin are confident that they can spot any falsehood and seeks to reassure Garrett who suddenly has his trap senses tingling.

Katinka also suggests to let the manticore go, and with no dissenting votes, it happens. As soon as the manticore is freed, he bobs a quick 'thank you for saving my life and not killing me', and quickly flies off.

Bosk wants more specific information, but he's not going to get it from the satyrs. Dalmaldian frankly ignores the Minotaur, keeping all his attention on every word of Sesha. Most of the other satyrs have got then it into their heads that they are off to see Ma'am, and it is a piping and dancing party. (Quick checks by the spellcaster a confirm that the music is normal music and not any magical effects). Palonius does answer Bosk's question, but it's probably not the answer he is looking for...

"We don't know, not having any of those fancy magical items you are describing", Palonius says cheerfully. "We stay well away from the mist. The things we told you is what I have heard from other tribes in the forest. None of us are willing to go into the MIST made by the Mythal, and those few who have quested that way have never returned." The satyr gives a dazzling smile. "But enough about that, on to talking to Mother."

The dancing and singing and laughing satyrs lead the Iron Adventurers for a couple miles through the woods and fields until they arrive at a grotto of natural stone surrounded by ancient oak trees wrapped in mistletoe. The grotto is magically dark, and none can see inside the shallow cave. Yet Beriothian can see all manner of small woodland creatures from squirrels and chipmunks to song birds and lizards finding perches on branch and bush and tufts...

Bosk is a little dismayed when he hears his recent purchases might be worthless within the mist, but if Gargul wills it he will succeed. Let us be sure anything we need is not stored within a non-dimensional space before we enter the mist. Also, let me know if you need healing. I do not want any of injured if another battle starts. He then follows the others lead, knowing he is not the silver tongued speaker of the group.

The music and carefree manner of the satyrs certainly goes a way to easing TInk's mind. She does raise an eyebrow and looks to Palonius on seeing the mistletoe. She'd heard about a certain ritual that required a couple who found themselves underneath the plant to kiss. There'd be none of that today!

She was a bit cautious about the grotto however. Rarely do things turn out well when you enter a magically darkened and ominous cave.

"Perhaps you should continue to lead the way, Palonius? We wouldn't want to intrude on your mother, or for her to think we were intruders"

Restlin looks around at his paranoid companions. He decides to try to a different tactic, instead joining in the satyr's dance. He's not much of a dancer, and probably looks pretty clumsy, but the magepriest is surprisingly nimble for a bookworm & knows how to move his body (acrobatics: 27), so maybe it's not too bad.

He stops dancing when he hits the darkness. That's just asking for a stubbed toe. "Hey, who turned out the lights?" he asks. "We humans can't see in this stuff too well."

The heroes identifies the magical darkness as Deeper Darkness, and cant see the back of the shallow cave.

They seem to be careful, most not paying much attention to other things around the forest hollow and stone grotto. Katinka talks to Palonius and Restlin makes a comment to no one really. Zane seems to be the only one who is curious about the small, normally skittish, woodland creatures.

Out of the corner of Zane's eye, the Minotaur spies a firefly as it buzzes and bobs until it is hovering in front of the magical darkness. Another comes, and another and more and...

Thousands of fireflies come from the forest and hover in front of the darkness. The formless swarm takes shape of a humanoid figure in a reclining position.

And suddenly there are not fireflies there anymore, but an elfin woman softly glowing and relaxing on a divan of living forest branches.

WELCOME TO THE LANDS OF TWILIGHT, BRAVE INITIATES OF THE DRAGON CONSORTIUM.

Her lips don't move, but each hero can hear her clearly. The Satyrs are in a state of adoration and so are the woodland creatures. The heroes can feel the presence of immortality. There is only one person THIS person could be!

Beriothian transforms back into humanoid form, perhaps surprising the satyrs. He takes the shape of a dwarf with long hair, and green eyes that can still pierce the darkness. He bows low before the figure standing in front of them.

Sesha stares at the elfin woman for a moment, her eye twitching. It wasn't often she ran into anyone that could generate a presence stronger than hers, and for a moment, she felt her hackles rise.

Then, like a lead weight, she recognized the heavy atmosphere of immortality and divinity, something she had felt with both Gargul and her own Serenbeth multiple times.

Quickly, all thoughts of rivalry are dispersed, and she takes a knee as well. Perspiration dots her forehead.

"S - s-sorry to intrude, Great Lady, Your servant Beriothian speaks true. We seek my rival, Mhalice. She is here, and claims to be able to control the powers of the Fae Skiemer and the Mythal."

She steals a glance at Beri, and smiles happily for him. To meet your spiritual center.. it was something that her heart yearned for often after the first time. She was glad he could experience it as well.

Ma'ab begins to sparkle more and then once again becomes a thousand fireflies that quickly disperse from the grotto. "Wow", says Palonius, and all the satyrs nod agreement. The darkness is gone and in the place where Ma'ab once reclined, water begins trickling out of the stone, forming a shallow pool.

"Wow is right!" Tink nods along with the satyrs.

She doesn't rise from her kneeling position until the fireflies have fully dispersed. Smiling, she walks over to Beri and gives him a pat on the back "Well done"

Out of courtesy to Beri and his encounter with his deity, Tink will wait until he has had the chance to sip from the pool before she does. This is no doubt a significant moment for him and she wants it to be perfect.

When it is her time Tink kneels before the shallow pool on both knees. She doesn't drink straight away however. She takes a moment to peer into the pool and try and see her reflection. Tink hesitates for but a moment as she lowers her lips to drink directly from the pool.

Once finished, she steps aside for the next member to drink.

"Your 'mother' is very impressive" she whispers to Palonius. She always knew fey were tricky. Of course he wasn't taking the party to meet his actual mother. "If you are to be our guide, then perhaps you should also drink?" Tink gestures to the pool inviting Palonius to share in the water.

For some reason, she was imagining a city of owls while singing. With that behind her, she rushes Beri and gives him a squeeze.

"So luckeee! You got to meet your goddess while she was still alive!"

She thinks for a moment, then scoops Pot-pot through the waters, and drinks from her iron-cast friend.

Bosk stares in awe as he waits for Beri to drink his fill before taking a drink himself. Meeting a god is shocking enough, but for the life of him he cannot recall when Beri became a dwarf! Briefly he ponder if this was something Maab did to him, or if it was something he did to himself. For the life of him, the blond taur cannot think of why someone would want to turn into a dwarf...taller is better, right?

"That," starts Restlin, "was really helpful." The wizard prestidigitizes a crude cup & scoops some water with it before drinking it down.

He wonders why the gods of the Wold were paying such close attention to the Iron Adventurers. Gargul seemed to know more than he let on, now Ma'ab was congratulating them. Was the Dragon Consortium such a big deal that even the gods themselves took interest?

Pretty cool if that's the case. Maybe Wardd will come down & congratulate him too some day?

He drops the cup, watching it shatter on the ground. The shards poof into smoke one by one until there's no sign of the thing left. He waits to see if that water was special, or just symbolic.

Still bemused or stunned (depending on the hero), Everyone waits for Beriothian to take the first sip, which eventually happens. And then the others reverently drink for themselves. Katinka even offers a drink to Palonius who, startled from his reverie, goes forward to drink himself. All the satyrs and then many woodland creatures follow suit. And it is a moment of idyllic stillness, where all in the land seems in harmony. Is is a moment that cannot, should not last forever. Slowly, the scene before the grotto returns to normal yet the Spring of Ma'ab continues to bubble up as a permanent pool in the Valleys of Twilight.

The heroes themselves feel the cool, pure water slide down their throats and it is refreshing. No, it is revitalizing. No... Energizing! Each hero feels that there is more they can do, more to fulfill Ma'ab's request to be the heroes of the Wold!

OOC: All heroes advance to 15th level with 750,000 XP!!!

The same effect doesn't seem to take with Palonius or any of the other satyrs or animals. Palonius is, however, ready to both guide the team through the Mist surrounding Fae Skiemir, AND is excited to tell the heroes about all the stuff Ma'ab's touch placed in his memory!

Beri thanks the queen for the wonderful gift as the fireflies disperse, leaving the party with their guides. He looks around and notices that the others are allowing him the honor of being the first to accept his queen's gift.

Returning to his natural state, the druid reaches his hand down into the cool, clear water. It is important to him that such a pure and awesome gift is received in his true human form. He lifts his hand to his lips, the clear water rippling reflecting the fading glow of the fireflies. The liquid chills his throat and sends a slight tingle all the way down to his stomach. He feels stronger, revitalized. He feels as if a part of Ma'ab herself has touched him and is flowing through his veins.

He reaches out and calls the other to join in his blessing.

Bosk's question catches Beri off guard.
I would advise against it. My guess is that the blessing has now been received and that the water would just be regular water when you go to drink it. She has also left this spring as a permanent gift for all those she welcomes into her grotto. However, it is not the water itself that concerns me. The Mythal has protections to trap those that are greedy inside. It already seems that the Mythal has taken on a life of it's own, expanding beyond it's intended purpose. It would be prudent to avoid anything the Mythal could view as greedy. That said, Palonius has been blessed by my Queen with such knowledge, if he says it is okay then by all means fill your canteens.

When the group is done drinking the druid uses A Thousand Faces and returns to the form of a dwarf to regain his dark vision.

"I remember hearing the Black Bird Lake heroes talking at their retirement party. They mentioned when they were in that castle which became their fortress on the lake, that they had no access to their extra-dimensional carrying bags. We will ne to get everything out we need before going in. I won't be worrying about my bow, but I will have a few potions and my lesser extend rod. Most of my other gear is just random stuff.

Now that Ma'ab has bestowed her knowledge upon the Iron Guide Bosk repeats his question and concerns. Could you tell us more about this mist and its effects? Does it prevent the usage of bags of holding? Do you know what would happen if we bring one or a portable hole inside the city? What about flying, a ring of blinking and darkwalking (Grim SU, not the spell)? Are those able to be used inside the city?

The Satyrs stay with the Iron Adventurers, continuing to dance thought the forest as Palonius stays close to Katinka and Dalmadian stays with Sesha. The party leads the groups through the forest once more, this time towards the foggy bank that hides Fae Skiemir.

The party ensures that no other groups approach the team.

And during this time, Palonius relates what he knows:

"Fae Skiemir is full of evil creatures and treasures. Creatures continuously fight over the hoards of treasure in the city, and there is a precarious balance of power. When a fight happens, other creatures assume the fight is over treasure and that the winners will be wounded, so they home into to get their share. This often leads to many sides piling into huge running fights!"

"Getting into the City, every person has to deal with the Mythal. The Mythal has generated a MIST that keeps greedy and evil creatures inside the city. No magical transportation or extra-dimensional spaces are possible in the Mist. No magical communication or divination can pass through the Mist.

"Getting out of the City is more difficult. Creatures can only move towards the city or sideways in the Mist. A creature can move away from the city only by touching another creature who is further away from the city. We have gotten heroes in and out by doing a chain, where 10 of us hold hands and walk into the Mist with one person staying outside the Mist. A person in the city can then use the chain to touch and walk back out again! And we'll do a chain for you. "

"The Mist is only one of the defenses of the MYTHAL, a powerful spell of protection on Fae Skiemir. The Mythal often changes, so this is just what Mother put in my mind." The satyr sheepishly looks over at Bosk. "the Mother didn't give us any specifics on the ability or use of magic items in the Mist or Mythal, my lord. "

"The Mythal is an epic protection spell that has covered Fae Skiemir. Mhalice has not changed what goes on in Fae Skiemir. She is as trapped as any other greedy creature by the Mythal. Only those of pure heart and intention, those who can build alliances and think of others can escape the City. The legend of the Fae Skiemir gold has brought greedy creatures to the City for years. And the Mythal ensures they can't leave. "

Salacious pipes up "They can check in..."

Garret listens carefully, then speaks, "So we're going into a city full of evil. There's a good chance we will get trapped in the city with no way out. It is an entire city, so the odds of defeating all the evil there is near zero. Oh, and any battle we engage in is highly likely to attract lots of more evil to attack us when we're injured. And all magical attempts to move outside the city will not work, so we will be trapped. This sounds like a one-way trip to certain death here. Oh, also we're going in in the hopes of finding the most powerful and most evil thing in there -- a thing so powerful it might have found a way through the level 10 magic that's keep the evil trapped in there. I'm not sure I see a good way out of this mess, folks. It's been nice knowing you all!"

He listens to Garret's summary. Unfortunately, it seems accurate.

"We have a mission. We need to stop Mhalice from accomplishing whatever nonsense she's trying to accomplish." He removes his wands & rods from his efficient quiver as he continues talking. "We can't expect to get all the way into the city with a ready chain of creatures to get us out. So, we either go in there and hope we find a way out, or we call it off and forget about Mhalice and the Dragon Consortium." He looks sideways at Sesha. "Seeing how the latter isn't a likely option, let's just hope we get lucky in there."

The satyrs and heroes move around a final grove of trees and there before them... Is the MIST. Dark gray, it billows but doesn't advance across a twenty foot gap between the Mist and the trees. The satyrs stop dancing and the singing trickles off. It is ... quiet... here.

Palonius continues to talk.

"I don't know, Lord Zane", he says sheepishly. Then, brightening, "but the Mist only borders the city and is about 100 feet deep! While the Mythal is all over the city, we can get you through the Mist."

"Yes, Lord Beriothian, we satyrs will help you get out again. We will have a scout hiding where you go in, just inside the fog. You come, and we form a chain to get you out. We will also sit up near Mother's Grotto and watch the city. Tell us what the signal is and how we can tell where to go, and we'll come to any location to form a chain to get you out. But that way will take a couple of hours."

"Yes, My Brilliant Katinka, the Mythal is the 10th level spell forbidden by the gods. The spell is ultimate protection, because it is sentient, it thinks and changes. Which is why this Rhemoraz was able to get out but could not be replicated. Your Mhalice will have to find a different way than before."

"Lord Restlin, the city once held every elf in the entire Wold. It is larger than the greatest city currently in the Wold!"

Palonius looks at Garrett, and the satyr's eyes get a far-away look. "There are more ways to win than beating everything in your way. If evil is able to live in Fae Skiemir, so can good. Observe how the evil ones are able to survive!" And Palonius' eyes return to normal.

"Wow", the satyr exclaims.

She wasn't sure that any of her allies could understand exactly what that meant. Humans and Taurs were shortlived, and Halflings lived normal spans as well. They would all flash brilliantly amongst the stars, then pass that light down to the next generation.

"Imagine it Restlin. Hundreds of years of knowledge and history, per person, gathered in the hundreds of thousands. A whole people with enough lifetime granted to have read and learned a library of knowledge each, living together."

She frowns.

"But somewhere, among all that wisdom, no one thought to point out that just because you can do something... doesn't mean you should."

Beri ponders the information Palonius has told them.
If the others join the fight looking for treasure, perhaps the answer is simply to let them have the treasure. Or offer to split the spoils with the first group if they will help defend it... this is likely something we will have to play be ear depending on the situation.

Palonius, have those you helped retrieve in the past relayed the techniques they used in such situations? Or how many competing parties tended to appear at once to claim the treasure?

Zane, ponders the answer, "Thank you." Then he once again tells everyone over the link, be sure anything you might need is out side of any magical bags or packs.
He peeks in his bags again, but having pulled the potions and his rod out of his pack, he's all set. Then he snaps his shoulders forward and looks over the right one then the left, and smiles as he sees he now has leathery bronze colored dragon wings. He decides he'll try them out and jumps up into the air and flapping them, he hovers in place.

Bosk feels himself becoming stronger as Jancassis blessings flow over him. Suddenly his back begins to itch as the scorpion tattooed there gives birth to a thousand young who swarm his body and embed themselves in his skin. As they crawl over his head he feels his knowledge expand and his ability to grasp the arcane opens up before him and spells like anti-life shell suddenly come to him...and he wonders if he could cast such a spell now or if it would require another nights sleep before he could cast it. He then checks his bag, unable to remember if he was allowed to bring some extra water with hims as a souvenir of meeting Ma'ab.

Speaking to the others over the link he adds, How are we doing for spells? Do we need to rest before moving forward? Are we able to cast these new spells Ma'ab's water granted us (from gaining a level), or will that require another night to prepare?

If no appropriate shelter is available, Restlin will summon one. As he's conjuring, he wonders how conjuration magic will work once inside this place.

Knowledge, Arcana: 44 - How can we expect conjuration magic, specifically creature summons, to work in Fae Skiemir?

He also ponders what Sesha said. "I'm sure there were plenty of voices urging caution. Heck, there's a good chance that the majority of voices urged caution. All it takes is a determined minority to wreck havoc on a society, especially if that minority wields stupidly potent magic. There's probably a bunch of reckless folks, elves and otherwise, still trying to master 10th circle magic. Not to say they'll ever get close, but I bet they're trying."

I'm going to hold off on preparing a spell list until I get an answer to my question about conjuration magic.

Garret says quietly, "Tink, I think we are looking at the city. There may be large buildings just beyond the edge of that mist there."

He looks around and continues, "Perhaps our best strategy is going to be to attempt to avoid confrontation at all costs. We should not need to battle others, but I imagine this Queen will be expecting us, prepared for us, and ready to fight us. No sense in being worn out before we meet her if we can help it."

When Zane starts flying, Garret jumps back, "Whoa! Where did you find those, big guy?"

He falls to his rear when scorpions appear all over Bosk and he jumps up, ready to fight, but Bosk doesn't seem bothered by them. He says, "That's just not right."

Beri looks at the tall trees towering over them, and the plants all around. It is a beautiful place to spend the night should they choose.
We are in no great hurry after all this time. I made a promise to Gargul to be less reckless, and I would say not refreshing our spells before combat qualifies. Besides, a little extra preparation can go a long way.

After singing about owls and fireflies, Sesha thinks about all of the things hundreds of years of learning could accomplish...and whether they should have had the wisdom to NOT do it.

Beri asks Palonius who shrugs again. "We have never helped a hero before. We have done it for us to steal treasure occasionally. Problem is there is rarely enough near the edge of the City to risk it."

Zane shows off his new wings. Hovering over the ground, small pebbles and dust fill the air into a cloud of debris that makes it difficult to see until he lands again.

Bosk and Katinka find that the drinking of water has revived all spells, health, and any other thing wrong. The group can't be any better to go than now. Bosk realizes that no one gave him permission to take water and no one said no either. Looks like the decision to take or not take the water is up to him.

Palonius points at the Mist. "One hundred feet that way, My Lady. That way lies Fae Skiemir ."

Restlin learns that he has all his spells. And he learns that he just doesn't know what the magical characteristics of a sentiment 10th level spell are. He has no idea what conjuration or any other type of spell will do.

Garrett has several insights and surprises, to include scorpions and wings.

The team doesn't have to refresh. Preparation on the other hand....

Bosk gives Garret a mock look of surprise. What is not right? You act like you have never seen a tattoo before...or is it the scorpions...would spiders bother you less...or what about snakes... as he lists each off the tattoos retreat under his armor under his armor and are replaced by the next species. Or perhaps you would prefer I keep them out of sight for now... All the the diminutive living tattoos retreat out of sight, but the mother tattoo remains in its usual spot.

He then looks at Zane and smiles, It looks like we are both changing in interesting ways...I am not sure anyone in the Wold has tread so far down these path. I know I have never heard of anyone sprouting wings, at not in recent history.

Bosk takes a few minutes to ensure his blades are freshly coated in poison, anything of use is removed from his bag of holding, and his spells were properly chosen given the lands unique magical restrictions.

Well, if the others are ready I won't stop you. Perhaps it's just being so close to Maab's presence in this place that is fueling my desire to stay a little longer. But, I'm ready when you are. Oh, one last question for our guide. What is the land inside the mist like... and I mean this fairly literally. When you have ventured in for treasure were there many plants? Or was it an urban area mostly devoid of vegetation? Is there any limitation on vision such as low light? I would like to choose a form well suited for the environment.

"If push comes to shove, and Mhalice thwarts our magic, I've got a scroll of anti-magic zone. Two, actually. I've also got sovereign glue. She won't get away from me this time, even if were stuck together for much longer than she'd like."

She smiles again.

"And thanks to my nature as a Bloodwitch, I think I can take her pummeling me longer than she'd have the strength to swing."

The Iron Adventurers seem to be intimidated by the task before them, but it could be joking and a jovial nature that is even more important than courage here!

Sesha has some last minute tactics that she tells the others she may use against Mhalice.

Palonius shakes his head. "No wise lady, I'm going to lead you through the Mist but stay just out of reach of the city. I'll stay in the fog where nothing can touch or detect me until you come back or our scouts get back to tell of your successful egress from another part of the City."

"Fae Skiemir is a City, and so is full of buildings, but also is elf-made so has parks and greenery as well."

With no other conversation or hesitation, the heroes have nothing else to do than walk up to the gray mists. They billow before the heroes, blocking sight, blocking all magical piercing of the veil. There is no telling what lies in wait beyond the Mist. Or in it...

Tink shakes hands with each of the satyrs in gratitude for the help they are giving to the party (and that's ALL the contact she will be making with them!)

With a wink to Palonius she activates her ring of invisibility and moves to the front of the line, and takes Zane's hand. She may not be able to see anything in the mist, but it has always been her responsibility to scout ahead. She wasn't going to let the party down now. Besides, her ears still worked.

Holding Zane's hand would no doubt cramp her stealthy movements, but she could do her best to remain silent.

She reaches out to touch the mist, and then slowly presses forward.

Beri stays towards the back as the group starts their formation, planning in his head what spells would be most useful in various situations. He decides that it's best to transform after crossing, being that they are unlikely to have someone on the other side when the can't be detected entering.

Bosk, paladin of the dead, thanks everyone for their help before activating his blink ring and taking his usual position, second from the front and draws his sword.

Before heading out he thinks to ask, Is there anything you would like us to keep an eye out for or try to retrieve while we are inside? Anything that might be of particular use or interest to your people? We will likely be going farther in than most so there might be more to find...I make no promise since I do not know the protections of the city, but since you were able to take treasure out, we may be able to as well.

The satyrs shake hands, hoping for more from Katinka and Sesha, and laugh good naturedly at Bosk's offer. "What do we want? The occasional excitement, then wine, women, and song! You find anything like that in there that you can bring us..."

Bosk notes with some concern that his Ring of Blinking does not activate, and he realizes immediately that Blinking involves another dimension: it's powers are blocked!

With nothing else to do, the heroes hold hands so as not to get lost in the Mist, and Palonius tags along not touching but beside Katinka, and they move into the grey Mist!

After thirty feet, when all the heroes are in the Mist, Palonius stops. "Watch this, Smart Lady", he says. He takes a step forward where Katinka can still see him, then turns around and looks like he is trying to step back to Katinka, but can't! He reaches out a hand to touch Katinka, and then easily moves back to her side. "All of you try this", he urges. "You can walk forward, and you can walk sideways all the way around the City. But walking away from Fae Skiemir? Impossible without a friend "

Bosk starts by placing just a couple hairs into the mist to see if he can pull out again. If that works he places a portion of one hoof in. Finally he will try stepping in and coming back. Briefly he ponders if a creature could be summoned from within the mist and placed outside it.

A couple of the heroes test the Mist's properties. Katinka and Garrett see that no matter what they try, there is no going backwards. The wise Bosk is much more scientific about the process. The Minotaur puts some hairs, then an arm, and then his body into the Mist. His experiments discover that the important tipping point is his center of gravity. He can do anything until the midpoint of his body is in the Mist, and then he can go anywhere but backwards.

The heroes and Palonius continue through the Mist, and it gets thicker, and thicker. The heroes feel questions insinuate in their mind. Who are you? Why are you here? What do you value above all things? The fog gets harder and harder to penetrate until the heroes can’t move. The questions still whisper inside each mind...

Sesha focuses her eyes forward through the mist, chasing each shadow with her gaze, picturing Mhalice behind each and every one. When the fog stops her, she begins to answer questions, unaware they are even being asked.

"I am Sesha. Blood Matron and Black Skinned Witch of the Ga'alin Barbarians, who are my life-kin. I am Sesha. Novice to the Houses of It'lal, who are my blood-kin. I am Sesha. The revival of Serenbeth and the Sisters up high, whom are my soul-kin."

"To recover something important. Mhalice brings shame to our blood-kin, and I seek to extract her from this place, so that our blood-kin might judge her fairly."

...What do you value above all things?...

Sesha pauses for a moment between steps.

"I am selfish. I value my soul, and she that watches it. I value my power, and the pride it brings to kin, both of blood and life."

She feels her cheeks flush. "A..a nd. And I value my future, and those that will share it." She glances through the fog at Restlin. "Especially him."

Being small, Tink is used to not being able to push past - or through - things. Not being able to push forward through a fog is a new low however. She perks up mildly when the others have the same difficulty.

Restlin hears the voice in his head. Did the elves create a spell so powerful it gained sentience? No wonder the gods were so angry. That's their game...

Anyway, he has questions to answer, it seems.

"Me? I'm Restlin the Mendicant. I serve Wardd, albeit poorly. I'm a better wizard than priest.

"I'm here because there's a nasty piece of work named Mhalice that may be in there & planning on using the city for her own purposes. Not sure what those are yet, but she already let a colossal beast loose on a peaceful village just to get our attention, so I'm guessing they're bad."


He pauses when asked what he values above all things. "These folks here with me, and those who have fallen or otherwise left my side. There was Zeoll, Yondrim, Kyan, Alexi, Wyarr...even that Beltrin guy, but maybe him not so much. They were all friends and I miss them."

The thick fog prevents all movement but breathing. The questions whisper and it is as if the whole forest is holding its breath...

First Beriothian, then Bosk, Katinka, Zane, and Restlin find they can move and walk in any direction other than backwards; they way is open.

For Sesha, it is as if the mist doesn't know what to make of the complicated witch. The drow gets a momentary image in her mind; if the mist had a face its mouth would be opening and then closing again as if it was about to say something and then changed its mind. Finally, slowly, Sesha finds she is able to move as the others once more.

Garrett and Palonius are held fast, unable to do anything other than breathe and blink. The questions begin to come again, this time audible on the wind: "Who are you? Why are you here? What do you value above all things? "

Restlin chooses not to help those stuck in the mist. It was sentient, and it was in charge. He for one wasn't going to disrespect it.

That said, he does wait until he sees Sesha is able to move forward before doing it himself. He speaks in a higher octave, trying to mimic Sesha's voice. "Well magic mist, the thing I value the most is obviously this fine specimen here. Restlin the Magepriest is just sooooo dreamy..."

Garret struggles to move and tries to wiggle forwards and backwards. "Darn this fog, anyway! I could be back in Bryn Baraz with..." his grumbling is interrupted by the voices again. He yells out to the fog, "Who am I? I'm Garret. Who are you? Why am I here? I'm trying to help my friends right some wrongs and you, whoever you are, are not helping me!" He then notices the ground under his feet and bends over to pick up a small rock. "What do I value? Truth? Honesty? Nature, like this rock? And right now, moving through this fog..."

Most of the heroes, being freed, demonstrate their relief through their normal humor and banter, especially the very complex relationship of Restlin and Sesha.

Garrett however is getting frustrated and tells the 'Mist just what's on his mind. The Mist pulses about the halfling, in greens and reds, and soon the halfling is free. Though not without a cost: for as long as Garrett is in Fae Skiemir, he incurs a -2 circumstance check on ALL rolls.

Palonius fares a similar fate; struggling mightily, then bawling out. "I am Palonius the Satyr, helping these heroes of the Wold to get in and out of Fae Skiemir by the will of Mother Ma'ab. And" he starts crying" I value myself and my own skin more than anything else in life!" The red and green lights pulse around the satyr, and he is left drenched in his own sweat.

"Wow", he says a third time since the heroes have known him.

Restlin moves up to be with Garrett, sensing that luck certain lily doesn't favor the halfling. So long as Restlin is able to stay within 30 feet of Garrett, his luck is able to compensate for the negative effects of the Mist and Mythal. So long as he is within thirty feet...

The group of heroes reassemble, and continue to move through the Mist. After 100 feet, the Mist suddenly ends, and the white stone walls of Fae Skiemir lay before the group!

The massive forest of trees and gray fog is left behind as the heroes step into perpetual twilight. 50 feet ahead of them across low-cropped yellowed grass is a section of wall 50 feet high and made of huge granite blocks. Flecks of stucco and paint still cling to some of the blocks. (DC 15 Perception Highlight to display spoiler: {see an idyllic forest scene of elf-maid and unicorn} DC 15 appropriate Craft/Profession check Highlight to display spoiler: {this was once a masterpiece, and just a common fresco on the outer wall!} A massive breach in the wall is 30 foot to the right, rubble and boulders in a spray across the grass and into the ruined city. They have reached Fae Skiemir!

Palonius elects to stay in the Mist. The last five feet of the Mist. "I will be safe here and ready to summon my brothers to form a chain and get you out again. ". He shakes hands with Katinka and gives a nod and a wave to the others. "Find the Tower from Mother's vision and you will find the source of your quest, I am sure of it. Remember that you sometimes fight, sometimes to observe, and sometimes to run away. Wisdom is knowing which to do when."

And it looks like the next action is up to the heroes...

"Thankyou Palonius. I hope that we meet again very soon" On a whim, she turns the handshake into a very quick hug. The hug was for both of them. For Palonius in that he might find something he values more than himself, and for her, comfort before entering this accursed city of doom.

Tink withdraws and straightens herself "Alright. Enough dithering. Let's find Mhalice"

Now clear of the mist, Tink does a quick check of her active spells. "Before we go too far ahead, let's take stock of what works and what doesn't. If the mythal is going to stop things from working we should probably try and find out now, rather than in an emergency"

She will try activating her ring of invisibility, as well as checking whether she can retrieve anything from her handy haversack.

He says, "I'd love to fly up and see if that tower can be spotted, but I'm guessing if we can see a long distance, a lot of other things could see us as well...maybe we should just head to that opening and look to climb up a wall or something."

Katinka activates her Ring of Invisibility which works. She tries to open her handy haversack and the air pulses with multicolored lights! The bag doesn't open but nothing else seems to happen.

Zane tries his efficient quiver and instead of an extra-dimensional space, shimmering colors dance and play over a 40-ft.-by-30-ft. area in front of the Minotaur! All heroes are blinded for 1d6 rounds (Fortitude DC 15 negates)

Restlin performs an easy summoning spell, but instead of a dog, a Stinking cloud appears 30-ft. Away!(Fortitude DC 15 negates).

Sesha makes her joke and is glad she didn't try anything.

Garrett and Zane consider that flying may be hazardous to THIER health.

......

And the white walls of Fae Skiemir (and the large breech) lay before the group.

All heroes gain 17,000xp for the last scene.

Restlin notes 2 things.

A: His hunch about conjuration magic not working appropriately here seems to be correct.
B: The effects that took place when he cast summon monster were more potent than the spell he tried to cast.

He wonders if all conjuration magic is like that here, but figures further experimentation isn't a great idea. This is driven home by the blinding colors and smelly cloud he now has to deal with. Luckily, he easily shrugs the effects off (Fort saves 36 & 27).

He awaits Tink's report about what's behind that wall.
