Find The Gate

[DM Hugh] - One could call it a literal portkey...
Saturday May 28th, 2016 1:53:07 PM

Bosk stares in amazement as Torm breathes out a rainbow as he wonders if the lock is real or imaginary.

Zane is happy that he travels light. He stands up bows to Torm and gathers his belongings.

Tink questions Mhalice's motive for sending the key before announcing that they need to leave word of their departure with Inspector Ausland.

Restlin signals he is ready to leave when everyone else is and surmises Mhalice considers herself unbeatable.

Garrett's attention is drawn to the rainbow breathe and magical key going so far as to reach out and grab it when the motives for sending it are questioned. The halfling points out the key seems like a trap.

Zane brings up the question being who attached the key; whether it was Mhalice or Faae Skiemir itself. The taur then quotes Malgant regarding traps.

Beri points out that the Iron Adventurers have Ma'ab's blessing before thanking Torm and asking questions regarding dangers, traps and favored elemental attacks of the locals.

Sesha reflects on how her new found elemental gem is something Mhalice can't counter. She then thanks Torm before running to the catacombs.

"The...Mythal...be wary...of...the...Mythal....it...can...cause...un.....us..ual....effects.....That .... is ....all....that I......know....a.....bout...your....desti...nat...ion." The turtle cleric responds to Beri's question.

The Inspector is notified, catacombs are visited and at last the group is ready to leave.

Everyone gathers around the key putting their myriad appendages out to touch it and the Wold shifts....

================================================

With a lurch everyone is transported to a pristine scene.

A majestic purple mountain rises from the forest floor. At the base of the mountain, a pool bubbles up and flows to a fast flowing stream leading off into the forest. A ring of towering cedar trees keep the pool covered from overhead view.

Although the trees are giant they also look kind of sad if that were possible as the only trees that normally qualify as sad looking are weeping willows.

Before leaving Tink completes her Tishe's Weave Elements spell to outfit the party.

"A purple mountain? There's something you don't see every day" Out of the corner of her eye Tink could swear she saw something just as the party arrived. "I think I saw something within that tree" she lets the others know.

Beri glances around the beautiful scene and suddenly locks eyes with a face in the tree... but is it really a face or simply a fluke of nature. He smiles softly, but maintains a steady gaze in order to not lose the image he's found. He walks up to the tree and bows.
Greetings my friend. My friends and I have been sent here, with Ma'ab's blessing, in order to investigate her realm for an interloper of on unknown intentions. Have you seen a stranger among you recently? And if so, do you know anything about their actions in the Queen's city?
The druid hopes the tree answers... or at the very least that the others see exactly what he does so he doesn't appear to be crazy and talking to himself.

[DM Hugh] - The trees did sing
Tuesday May 31st, 2016 6:36:39 PM

Zane sits there with his mouth hanging open looking at the mountain before remarking how unexpected their destination was.

Tink points out the strange mountain and then that she saw something inside the tree. She then tries to talk to it before waiting for a response.

Garret steps up to the tree and tries to locate the face he thought he saw before tentatively reaching out a finger and contemplates touching the tree.

Restlin waits and watches as Tink and Garret talk to the tree.

Beri also approaches the tree and brings up their mission and queries about any recent strangers.

After our heroes addressed the tree and after a long pause a voice rings out from the tree with the face that some of the group thought they saw.

"The elves were obsessed with magical power." The voice rings out.

The rest of the trees in a chorus echo "Obsessed."

"Our foolish obsession drove us to develop a 10th level spell, against the wishes of the gods." the voice continues

"The center of our own arrogance." the choir chips in.

“Now we watch the gate to our hearts, waiting for heroes...” the voice trails off

“It is too late; the Guardian is here!” the choir warns.

Coalescing above the pool is a horror looking like a purple cloud and 10 yellow tentacles covered with tiny suction cups and hooks. As it hovers over the waters ,four eyes of smoky yellow appear, their shapes like a monk’s yin-yang symbol open and a voice roughened by centuries of smoke sentences: “Elf friends! You can suffer as these young elves do, entrapped in the trees as I consume their souls for ten thousand years!”

Looks like the tentacled monstrosity means business, better brace yourselves for a fight.

The creature calls and drones in a horrendous skirling of sound that makes it all but impossible to concentrate. Any spell or skill takes a standard action is more difficult to perform.

Bosk tries to talk the guardian down. (OOC: 1 stave as you haven’t used an action yet this turn; as for crafting you have 3 months b4 Torm woke up plus however long it takes to cast Weave Elements)

Tink activates her new shield, casts spectral hand and then takes a 5 foot step.

Garret voices the opinion that they should convince the guardian they are not elf-friends or make a dash to the entrance.

Sesha points out that with her there they can’t convince it they aren’t elf-friends and then bends leylines to cast spectral hand.

Beri tries to identify the creature but it is not natural and confirm that the creature is the cloud and not hiding in it. He moves and turns into an Earth Elemental.

The creature activates an SLA flys forward a little while remaining over the pond and then attacks Tink with its tentacles. Unfortunately for the party the creature seems unfazed by the effect of the shield.

All of the tentacles hit her and she takes a total of 135 damage and she is not grappled by the tentacles as her freedom of movement spell protects her.

Sesha frowns. This thing was ridiculous. It was also dangerous.

She takes a moment to focus on the ley-lines around her, feeling out the strange and quirky flow of the Woldsblood here in the Vale. She watches Katinka's necromancy spell carefully. If it seems resisted by some sort of natural ability, she will heal Beri instead.

She shapes some of her strongest Bloodmagic, binding a curse to the creature. She follows with a second spell, hoping to end the fight quickly.

Zane now huge lets lose with a barrage of magically infused arrows but alas none of them find their mark.

Tink flies upward and fires a ray of enervation at the guardian. The guardian gets hit and is now the proud owner of three negative levels.

Bosk again tries to reason with the guardian to no avail and Tink points out that reasoning with it might not be a good idea considering the elf souls.

Sesha in a flurry of activity bends a ley line and then casts Meddle followed by a baleful polymorph. The guardian fails to resist the meddling and is afflicted with the full penalty and then fails to resist turning into a toad however it manages to resist believing it is a toad so it retains its extraordinary, supernatural, and spell-like abilities. After the smoke clears from the spell a diminutive tentacled toad making a racket is left where the huge guardian once floated.

Garrett had lept at the creature while the spell was resolving and slams into the tentacled toad with his fist in mid-air. The tentacled toad resists being staggered but suffers the effect of the critical hit.

Restlin unloads on the tentacled toad as well with a disintegrate coupled with a ray of enfeeblement as shiny makes him smarter. The disintegration spell flies wide of the tentacled toad as the ray of enfeeblement hits and the tentacled toad is further weakened.

Beri activates his bead of healing as he reflects upon his life choices that led him to this moment while the guardian turned into a toad and he becomes un-grappled as the creature shrinks. Still though the gods have a warped sense of humor as Beri isn't healed for much.

Bosk shadow walks as he waits for an opening.

The guardian now a tentacled toad re-raises its globe of invulnerability sla defensively as the much-weakened shrunken tentacles attempt to attack the halfling monk but they have no force to them and are easily dodged.

"You sure you cast that spell properly, Sesha? It still has tentacles" Tink asks.

She examines the tentacle-frog closely. That it could activate a spell-like ability whilst making a full attack would mean that it could activate its spell-like abilities as a free action. That would make it a little tougher than she had hoped.

She also looks closely at the size of the tentacles now. With the monster now diminutive, hopefully it's tentacles were also that small. And that would mean it could only attack creatures directly on top of it. She tries to determine the reach on the tentacles now.

Tink knows full well that a globe of invulnerability emanates out from a central point. If it was close enough to attack Garret, then the chances were that he was ALSO protected whilst within the globe.

Tink questions the effectiveness of Sesha's spell before studying the tentacled frog closely.

Tink Highlight to display spoiler: {The globe stretches out in a 10 foot radius centered on the tenta-frog encompassing it and Garrett. Incidentally she also notices that the tentacles seem stretchy meaning they can reach farther than the creature's size suggests however considering it has shrunk & how Beri was un-grappled looks to be less than the 30 foot reach observed at full size. }

Sesha remarks on the efficacy of Blood witches turning things to toads and then sends some healing energy Beri's way.

Restlin noticing the return of the globe opts to not throw a fireball and instead shoots another ray of disintegration its way but the beam is off target.

Zane fires off 4 arrows at the diminutive tenta-toad but is suffering from projectile dysfunction as none of the arrows hit either. The taur then complains to Sesha about its size and its tentacles. Sesha offers the advice to hit it better unless he wants her to make it bigger.

Bosk charges into the melee between the tenta-toad and Garrett but the nimble creature is able to easily avoid the seemingly clumsy sword swing. The taur cleric questions whether the elf spirit trees could aid in the battle.

Tink fires off another enervation ray but again the creature is just too hard to hit.

Garrett lets loose w/ a flurry of blows against the critter but only one of his strikes hit for maximum effectiveness.

Beri makes sure he is no longer threatened by the tentacles & then starts summoning a lightning storm.

The toad guardian lashes out with 3 of the tentacles aimed at Garrett and 7 tentacles aimed at Bosk. The three tentacles aimed at Garrett do not hit home. Only 1 of the 7 tentacles hit Bosk, threatening to strike the taur as strong as the weakened guardian can but is partially turned aside by Bosk's armor. Bosk takes 3 damage

This little toad thing was proving to be very resilient. Tink takes a second to capture the moment: a minotaur and a halfling going hand to hand with a tiny frog. "Not something you see every day. I wonder how Restlin will retell this particular story?"

Bringing herself back to the action, Tink tries to once again weaken the toad-monster with her final casting of Enervation.

Restlin imbues Garrett with a bit of luck.

Sesha checks out the trees in thought and then casts Heroism on Bosk to give the taur a break bending a ley line for a free casting.

Bosk is unable to land a blow this time around even with the increased morale.

Tink succeeds in pinning the toad guardian before asking Bosk if he wants to bronze this one too.

Bosk is against the idea reasoning that it is the last of its kind and it could help in keeping evil out fo the city if they can come to an understanding.

Restlin attempts to treat with the toad, reminding the creature of its situation.

Zane reminds the rest of the group that the guardian is also a torturer but also that if the elf spirits in the trees were evil maybe the punishment is justified.

Beri assists Restlin in the diplomatic efforts urging the guardian to listen.

The toad guardian laughs at you and then in a surprisingly deep voice coming from a toad "The elven spirits deserve their torture for their hubris alone. Whether they were good or evil is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that they tried to create a tenth level spell and upset the natural order."

"You might have some hubris too, thinking you can restore Fae Skiemir to its past glory. What you don't understand is the purpose of the Mythal and what its true function is. Rather than asking if it is possible to restore the city, ask yourselves could the city have a new purpose beyond what was originally intended? Was my job to keep people like you out or the true horrors trapped within? If you think you can reconnect Fae Skiemir with the rest of Wold all you will find there is your doom."

Pretty sure my friends here aren't any more full of hubris than I am." He looks around. "Right, guys?" He looks back down. "Anyway, I'm not even sure she's here, but she sent some kind of gargantuan bejeweled remorhaz after us that she claims was from here. Figured we should check that out.

Mr. Toad, did you have a reason for assuming we were here to restore something? Is that a choice you believe we will be forced to make? And have we been mislead regarding the purpose of the Mythal, or has it's purpose evolved with the purpose of the city? And more to the point, if that remorhaz was able to escape wouldn't that imply that either the horrors within have found a way out, or that the Mythal was trying to alert the forces of good so that they could come and return balance?

Restlin scratches his head and corrects the toad-guardian that they are not their to restore Fae Skiemir and that they are aware of its history. He questions whether they can come to some sort of agreement with the guardian.

Tink urges for caution as she isn't sure how long she can hold it and asks if someone can tie it up.

Bosk begins tying the creature up w/ a chain.

Sesha ponders restoring Fae Skiemir questioning its original purpose and if it could serve a new purpose.

Zane is almost pleading with the guardian trying to fervently persuade to allow them to chase the evil into Fae Skiemir in the hopes of tracking down their quarry for the good of the Wold.

Garrett says that he isn't full of anything as he hasn't eaten in a while.

Beri asks why the guardian might have thought that they wanted to restore something.

The guardian says, "The only thing that indicated that you wanted to restore something were your words."

Something changes with the guardian when you mention Mhalice, her Remorhaz and hunting down evil. His toady continence shifts and his eyes light up with a gold light, now in a feminine voice reminiscent of Mhalice the toad says, "You'll never stop the new queen of Fae Skiemir, regardless of your intentions the only thing you will find is your certain deaths."

The toad then implodes in on itself leaving a black smudge where it used to be. Miraculously the chain is still intact and when you search the ash smudge you find a ring and a pair of bracers.

"Well, that answers a whole lot of questions. Mhalice is not in there secretly and seems to have the support of the city or at least some of the beings that populate the place. Can anyone see about these trees or elves or whatever, maybe they can assist us since the guardian was on the other side of this fight."

With the toad thing imploding Tink releases her grasp on the telekinesis spell. "Well done, Sesha. I dare say we're all breathing largely because of your spells"

She has quite a number of unanswered questions though. A 10th level spell? Is that even possible? What was the spell to do? With the guardian beaten, would the way to Fae Skiemir be open for all? Have they done the right thing in removing it? What if the guardian also stopped things from leaving? What if it means that they have opened the gates for monsters to flood the Wold?

Noone in the group would have answers to these questions. Her only hope was that the spirits of the elves that were trapped in the trees would stick around to talk.

"The guardian is beaten!" she calls out towards the trees. She's not quite sure if it will do anything or not.

He stretches. "So, this lady is now Queen of this place. That's probably bad." He flies up to get a look above the tree tops, trying to get an idea of where they are. They had to face that thing right after they arrived, so he never got a chance to scope things out.

If Mhalice has already corrupted the land it's going to be that much harder to find a safe location to recover after this fight.
Beri turns back to the tree people.
Sorry, I believe we were cut off back there. What exactly was the intention of the 10th level spell? Do you happen to know a safe, possibly unguarded entrance? And if you were strong enough to attempt to create a 10th level spell, is there any chance you can give us some high level protection spells before we go? Not 10th level of course...

[DM Hugh] - Elf Spirits Never Die They Just Fade Away
Wednesday June 15th, 2016 11:39:15 PM

Zane points out that the guardian's passing answers a lot of questions and then asks for someone to see about the trees.

Tink releases her grip on the telekinetic spell congratulating Sesha on a job well done. She then tries to notify the tree spirits before turning her attention to the ring and bracers.

Garrett turns his attention to the exchange with the trees hoping that the group can collect some allies.

Restlin gives Sesha a playful punch before thanking her for her handling of the toad. He then scopes out their location.

Beri points out they will be having a hard time finding a safe place for the night before questioning the tree spirits.

Sesha flexes her arms and strikes a pose before reminding the others she will be serving in a more limited capacity moving forward.

After the guardian is dusted the spirits are free to finally go to the Lands of Rest. As the trees slowly fade away, they offer respond to your questioning with some final instructions: “The gateway is under the pool. Once in the lands around Fae Skiemir, be wary. There are temptations within Fae Skiemir. Only the pure of heart and purpose can enter and leave alive. Only they will not be trapped. The Gods be with you all.”

Perception DC 40 Highlight to display spoiler: {The pool is deep and rolls with the waterfall, but 50 feet down is a golden archway with a keyhole under the pool of water. You'll have to come up with a way to get to the bottom and activate the gate before drowning.}

Tink: Highlight to display spoiler: {The bracers are a bracers of armor +5 and the ring is a ring of protection +3}

Restlin is calmed by the rushing of the waterfall as it collects in the pool. The purple mountain seems taller than previously as the elf spirit trees are gone but it appears that this is just an optical illusion.

Thursday June 16th, 2016 11:13:28 PM

Tink fills in the others on what the magic items are before pointing out the golden archway under the pool and questions if the group wants to rest before proceeding.

Zane only notices the gate after Tink points it out. He chimes in that he could use both magic items and with a water vest he can drag someone to the gate but the question remains of what is on the other side.

Garrett points out that he too could use the defensive items. He then wonders if the water will drain if they open the door.

Beri is of the opinion they should rest outside the gate to recover spells. He also points out that he can literally turn into a fish and breathe water so reaching the gate won't be a problem.

Restlin is also for restling.

You spend an uneventful night resting in the shade of the purple mountain. All spell-casters regain their spells.

The next day the gate beckons; will Zane and Beri be the ones to open it or will you take a different tact?

Tink takes the time to rest and recover her spells that evening. Although the magic items would benefit her slightly, she is of the opinion that the frontline fighters like Zane and Garret might need it more than her.

In the morning she recasts her Tishe's Weave Elements spell to create garments for the party. She is happy to change the elements that each person wants, but unless otherwise directed creates them as follows:
Tink a 'Water' version, Restlin a 'Water' version, Zane a 'Water' version, Bosk a 'Fire' version, Beri an 'Air' version

After a light breakfast (can't go swimming on a full stomach after all) she is ready to face the mysterious pool of water.

Those vestments are much more useful than my druid robes most days, thanks Tink! I'm going to prepare more heal spells and less that rely on the environment today since we are headed inside the city.

Oh, and we may want to go to the door all at once. There is a waterfall, so even if the pool drains the water, it is unlikely that the pool will empty significantly. And whoever built that entrance wouldn't have done it in a way that would flood the city. I think it's more likely we'll end up being attacked while our part is divided if we don't all go at once.

[DM Hugh] - Through the gate
Saturday June 18th, 2016 12:46:39 PM

Tink takes the opportunity to rest and recover her spells and is fine with the defensive items going to the group’s front line fighters. She then casts various weave element spells over the group.

Garrett is still of the opinion that one person from the group should go down and open the door in case the water drains once the door is open.

Restlin the casting of weave elements to Garrett so he can breathe water. Restlin then readies to cast elemental body III on himself before getting ready to enter the pool.

Tink reminds Restlin that the spell would occupy the same slot as Garrett’s monk’s robe and she isn’t sure he wants to give it up.

Beri thanks Tink for the spell, plans to switch up the spells he is preparing the next day and then proposes they all go in together in order to prevent some of the party from being ambushed while they are split up.

Before turning in for the night Bosk heals everyone of their injuries and then coordinates with Beri to get his staffs charged.

The next morning he thanks Tink for the garments before activating his ring and casting false life from his staff. The taur concurs with Beri that they should all go in together.

Zane takes the bracers and the ring, leading the way through the portal with his kama in hand.

Through a combination of various magicks you manage to make it to the bottom of the pool, insert the key and open the door. As soon as the key is in the lock you hear a snktk sound and then a dome of force slowly emanates from the top of the gate to extend beyond it on all sides. When the portal opens the water inside the dome drains and you are left in a dry spot beneath the pool.

Together you step through the portal.

The party emerges through a broken gate that is barely standing. Many stones have fallen and all that remains is the minimum for the gateway to stand. Perhaps the magic of the gate assists with that? The heroes arrive in a clearing littered with wet leaves and surrounded by towering trees which form a canopy overhead, In a moment of serendipity you notice that the canopy of the trees is reminiscent of the dome covering the gate you just left, is it just a coincidence? In the distance 10,000 spires, covered with an almost invisible pale blue mist show the way to the goal, Fae Skiemir: City of Wonders.

When dinner comes, she prepares a Hero's Feast. And after, she casts sacrifice self twice, trading an eye for See Invis, and an ear for Resist Energy: Acid

"Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all sickness and nausea, receives the benefits of both neutralize poison and remove disease, and gains 14 temporary hit points after imbibing the nectar-like beverage that is part of the feast. As the look around the clearing Beri scans for danger, paying extra attention for anything lurking in the trees or signs of dangerous inhabitants of the forest such as large claw marks. He notes to himself just how similar the canopy is to the dome they just left... very similar. Perhaps it's nothing, but in a realm of magic and dealing with a deceptive foe who revels in illusions why take any risk?

Before we go, I would like to detect magic on the forest entrance. I don't doubt that the dome was magic, but if the dome still matches after all this time because the trees are magical we should probably know. I would hate to blindly walk into a trap covered by an illusion designed to match the dome to throw us off... of course, it could just be that the trees prosper in this land. By the way, make sure to examine the canopy as we walk, dangers often lurk above eye level.

Oh, and since the canopy matches that dome, does anyone remember seeing anything on the dome that would indicate upcoming spots that would be well suited for an ambush? It could just have been made to resemble the trees before us, but I would kick myself for the rest of my life if Ma'ab had provided us a map and I was too blind to notice.
