Getting a Bead on the Killer

Labortown -- Jim C
Friday February 24th, 2012 10:08:43 PM

Walking east down the marble causeway, the group notes how clean the city is as usual, how wonderful it smells. There is that certain smell in the air, like fresh linen warming under the sun. Hints of cinnamon from a nearby shop permeate the senses then give way to a robust and pungent smell of sausage cooking on the grill for brunch, but soon that smell ebbs away and once again replaced by that fresh clean smell. The weather, the buildings, even the people looked...perfect. All well dressed--no beggars or stragglers on the side of causeway begging for alms--it was just as several in the group remembered when they first entered Hook City with their guide, Jacob aka Temujin.

Turning down a wide street, Bosk remembers what Jacob said about Labortown, "At the edge of town, what is the eastern edge of North hook, is Labortown. Prior to the Great Migration, the people there used to farm the sea of grass from the Sargrass plains. Now that North Hook is almost surrounded by water, they harvest the bounty of the sea at their doorsteps. Their buildings are covered in the same plaster as these here, but they've taken to coloring them beautiful shades of orange, blue and more. I think they do it to match their sails, I dunno, but it's very beautiful."

As they arrive at the plunging road that swerves downward and to the left and under the great bridge, they see the first buildings of Labortown and it is as they were told. The colorful buildings invite the casual observer to walk between them on cobblestone streets filled with open air markets selling fresh fish, all manner of meat--either raw, or grilled to your desire, and other fresh produce ranging from the common cabbage to a rare dragonfruit. The smell of hotpots, spicy dishes that cause a man to tear up just by walking past them, and grilled fish permeate the air--the magical weather tower holds no dominion here it would seem.

As the group asks around about a glassblower, Zane feels a sharp pinch in his hind quarter. When he turns to look, he see's a street urchin, a boy of some 12 years, running away at full speed. Some fifty feet away, a younger girl yells out, "Run Toby, run, or he'll eat you!" Although Zane is quick, it would nearly be impossible to catch such a small thin, wiry boy running between the citizens that crowd the lane. Looking, Zane see's the boy has taken a bit of his fur--how odd.

Upon resuming their search, the group soon finds a little shop called, Ed's Glassblowing. Heading inside they find a fat little man hunched over his counter looking at a piece of intricate handblown glass in the shape of a goldfish, scales and all. Looking up, he see's the group and begins to smile, then his smile falters when he see's so many are armed and armored. "What's your business here? Did Edna send you? That sinister old hag! Whatever she's paying you, it's not enough! I won't go down with a fight, I won't!" With that said he reaches behind his counter and produces a cricket bat and attempts to hold it menacingly. To the trained eye, he isn't accustomed to holding any type of weapon.

Beriothian smiles and shakes off the unexpected response of the glass blower. He steps up and tries to defuse the situation before someone does something stupid (historically that being one of the Iron Adventurers).

Are you sure you want to play cricket, how about a nice game of chess? Because the two things we are in labor town for are to find out a little about a small glass trinket we found and to hopefully knock back a few cold ones before making the trek back home, and I can do both those while playing chess. Would you mind taking a look at the item we found and telling us anything you can about what it's from, and who might have dropped it. Oh, and this Edna hag you mentioned, what's her story? Is there anything we can do to lend a hand in smoothing things over with her?

And on a completely unrelated note, that gold fish is exquisite! It doesn't happen to be fore sale does it?

Not that it matters, but he does have a hard time feeling threatened by him. Still, he's glad when Beri disarms the situation before Alexi claims he's evil and stabs him. He'll let the more gilded-tongue adventurers handle this for now.

He instead strikes up a conversation with Zane. "So, you eat kids, huh? I imagine they're a little stringy if you don't tenderize them just right..."

Zane took in the buildings and their paint jobs, while they may be pretty, the colors were unorganized and over all, they hurt the eyes due to the clashing colors of neighboring buildings. Much more colorful than the monastery where he grew up, it was all tans and browns and white.

Ed visibily relaxes as Beri calms him down, then his ire returns when he mentions Edna, "Edna's my ex. She owns the shop across the street." Pointing to it, everyone turns to see a shop across the street named, Edna's Glassblowing. A grimace still on his face as he puts away the cricket bat, "I heard through the grapevine that she was sending some thugs to bust up the place and when you walked in, well, I thought they were you. My apologies." Placing the goldfish in front of him on the counter, "She is for sale, just finished her today and she's still a little warm. 10gp and she's yours. Now, what's this item you want me to look at?"

Before Beri can stow away the goldfish, Ed shakes his head and takes it away, "This here is real delicate, I wouldn't want such a beauty to get broken." Carefully wrapping it in tissue-like paper, then placing it in a box filled with cotton batting, Ed secures the box and hands it back to Beri. "There, that should do till you make it back home. It's a one of a kind, like all my glassworks, not that fabricated crap they sell up in Hook."

Yondrim smiles at Ed as he puts the cricket bat down and moves forward to speak, "Perhaps we can assist each other, Ed. We're investigating a crime and have reason to believe the perpetrator left behind a bead... we're hoping that you may be able to recognize it? Maybe point us in the direction of who made it or who bought it recently?" He shrugs then and gestures accross the street, "Whether or not you can help us, we can help you. If the rumored thugs have truly been hired, perhaps we should stick around for a time to... persuade them to take up another line of work."

He'll also try and keep a watch for any "thugs" headed towards the store, this guy is too much of an artist to defend himself.

"So," he says to Zeoll. "Watching our back, eh? That's decent of you. You can never be too careful here. Gotta be on the lookout at all times! Heather and Marta learned that the hard way, as did scores and scores of lovely prostitutes...such a shame, that. You think it's honorable work, prostitution? Squeezing into the tiny shop with the others doesn't look enticing, so Beltrin stays outside with Zeoll and Restlin. As Restlin begins prattling on, he shakes his head and tries to stay focused on their surroundings, also trying to hide the grin that sneaks across his face.

He also ponders the theft of Zane's fur. Although scrying spells are beyond his capability he thinks that he remembers something about them being more effective if you had something personal to the object, and fur is pretty personal. He addresses Zeoll and Restlin "Do you two remember anything about scrying spells? If we're chasing down a magic user, couldn't they use that fur to spy on Zane?"

Ed gives a sneer at Alexi's comment, however quiet he intended it to be, and replies to Alexi when he tries to crack a joke, "Don't eat bugs, never trusted a man who would."

Turning his attention to the bead, Ed takes a good look at it and responds, "Yup, I made this one. It and twelve others just like it for a custom ordered bracelet. Gentleman said it was for a ladyfriend of his. Had me deliver it too, to her residence." Putting the bead back down, Ed begins bargaining, "So, I figure you want to find this person. I need protection. You guys hang around outside for a few hours until these thugs arrive, put a whooping to them and I'll give you the address. Deal?"

Outside, Zeoll notices the face of an old woman, probably in her late fifties, peering at them behind a shade in Edna's Glassblowing shop. Beltrin on the other hand is pretty positive that having a piece of the person, hair and such, really does aid alot in attempts to scry said person.

Of course we will be more than happy to help protect your store. Unfortunately, when Alexi mentioned a target he was referring to someone even more terrifying than a woman's scorn. The Street -- Jim C
Thursday March 1st, 2012 12:18:22 PM

Sensing that Ed is indeed telling the truth, the group spreads out. Some go to talk to Edna while others take to the street, fanning out. The street that these shops and most other buildings occupy, are on the single straight wide street that stretches North to South. Standing in the middle of it, one can see all the way down one end to the other--then there is the other part of Labortown on the other side of the narrow strait, patterned much like West Labortown.

As Zane buys a bronze dragon and is told that larger items can be custom ordered for approximately 100gp for a 6' tall dragon, Yondrim and Zeoll have words with Edna.

"So you're not here to bust up my shop? Well that's a relief, I thought Ed had hired you to put me out of business." Edna visibily relaxes and then says sadly, "That man has brought me so much trouble. He beat me when we were married and cheated on me numerous times and now he's trying to take what little I have and ruin me." Composing herself, she asks, "What can I help you with, magistrate?"

Two other men that stood along side their leader also attack Bosk mercilessly, almost gleefully, their daggers glancing this way and that off of the minotaurs armor, but one sneaky attack bites deep into his flesh from the flank.

Bosk takes 20hp damage this round

Beri charges forward too, sort of. He attempts to run this way and that, trying to find an opportunity to strike at the flank of one of the attackers, but the wall of men pretty much makes this impossible. The rogue ends up stopping and starting in front of several men who jump forward and attack him, yet none are able too until they try to flank him, which they also find hard to do without getting gored by Bosk, but one does manage to slash Beri with one of their twin daggers.

Beri takes 4hp

Eager to use Vera, Restlin holds back as he see's the others charge forward and instead casts Haste on the three chargers (Bosk, Beri and Yondrim).

Can't be more than 30' apart and the thugs are 50' away, so only the three are affected

Joining his new friends after moving by Alexi the human shield, Yondrim avoids multiple dagger attacks as he lays into the arm of one of his three attackers, but finds a sneaky dagger in his flank as the men surround him.

Yondrim takes 10hp damage after damage reduction

Zeoll continues to concentrate on the lone thug in the back of the group that seems to be very calm about the whole situation as he moves further away from the fight.

Standing idlly, watching all the hubbub, the lone calm thug suddenly finds himself falling into a pit. Astonishingly, a large pit has materialized under his feet, but just at the last moment he throws himself to the side and avoids falling into the pit. His calmness is gone.

Invoking a magical shield around him, Zane carefully watches the fight.

1 Round by tomorrow night

ooc: Can we get a map? We are at a huge disadvantage when the enemy can flank us and we can't flank them, or even maneuver into logical positions. This is especially true for those of us who are worthless when they can't make sneak attacks ;)

DM Jim: No map this time... as long as it's three on one, there will be one flanking attack. When it becomes 2 to 1 or 3 to 2, no more flanking. Ways to accomplish this would be acrobatics rolls, killing them, or getting more people into the fight.

OOC: it is a bummer not to have a map. :(
On the ASSumption that if any of our guys is flanked, that would put the that enemy on MY side, that is, between ME and my friend. It would be very easy to know this with a map. So I'm having to ASSume that that is so by the statement:
No one was flanked on the ready action, only on the subsequent round.

IF that is so, then Alexi charging him would be a flanking attack. IF that is not so, then we should have had a map from Round 0. Blindfight does not work across the internet.

IC: Alexi drops his flail and picks a foe that has (if one has) flanked a friend and draws his sword while charging him.

Stopping the spell that he had in place, Zeoll moves back towards the group and then closer to get in range for his spell.

No spell this round. Previous round you moved 40' back placing you at 90' from the thugs (who were at 50' as stated). That means you used two move actions to move 50' to get in range of your spell.

Try as he might, Bosk just doesn't seem to be able to hit the thug's leader, but then with Restlin's haste spell, the minotaur finds he has just one more quick attack to make and connects solidly on the leader, slashing open his chest.

It is a horrendous sight to witness as Yondrim turns the thug who threw the dagger into him, into a bloody paste. There's no coming back from this one.

Yondrim is no longer flanked. You don't pull on Superman's cape.

Rushing forward, Zane's fists begin to glow and crackle with arcane energy. Striking at the foe flanking Bosk, Zane's fist hits the man so hard in the face, several of his teeth fly out.

Bosk is no longer flanked

Invoking a spell that will hold a person helpless, Restlin targets a thug next to the bloody paste of a thug that threw the dagger that hit Yondrim. There isn't even a slight pause as the man resists the spell completely (22, Nat20 save)

Dropping his flail, Alexi rushes forward to aid Beri--drawing his sword, he brings it down on the back of the man flanking his friend with a bloody slash.

Beri is no longer flanked

Deftly Beri finds a small window of opportunity to strike twice between several of his attackers into the back of the man flanking Bosk--the same who just lost several teeth to Zanes attack. Screaming in agonizing pain and clutching at his back, the man falls unconscious.

Amazed at the amount of steel being wielded, Beltrin moves forward and casts his Slow spell on the two thugs attacking Yondrim, the remaining two attacking Bosk and two that are attacking Beri. All of them except one thug on Yondrim succumb to the spells effect.

Striking back at Bosk, the thug leader finds it incredibly hard to penetrate the minotaurs armor, so too does the other man attacking him, but he does manage to get one dagger strike between Bosk's armor joints.

Bosk takes 4hp damage

Yondrim remains unscathed as the two thugs on him strike relentessly but can't seem to harm him.

A sharp lance of pain shoots up Beri's back as a dagger cuts deep into his shoulder blade, spraying blood on those nearby.

Beri takes 7hp damage

In the back of the group, somewhat away from the pit--since he decided he didn't like being so close to the sloped edges of the suddenly appearing pit, Otto decides he better do something. Pulling a wand out of his belt, he takes careful aim at the group of spellcasters (~80' away) beyond the fight and let's fly a fireball. It erupts in the midst of the groups three dedicated spellcasters and melts their hair.

Beltrin, Restlin and Zeoll take 14hp damage, save DC15 Reflex save for half.

His clothes still smoldering, Restlin fires back with an Acid Arrow and hits Otto squarely in the chest.

Turning to a fresh target, Yondrim once again attacks repeatedly--frothing at the mouth as he almost kills another who would dare to attack him.

Moving the proper distance, Zeoll casts a spell at one of the men attacking Bosk, who immediately begins to spew bile laced salmon with andouille sausage all over his leader and Bosk. No amount of presdigitation is going to get that out.

Attacking the leader once more, only Bosks armor spike manages to catch him. Yet the man won't go down--but he is on his last legs.

Beri turns to find the man who just slashed him and gives him a slashing back. Too bad he couldn't flank him or the man would probably be dead, not just cut up badly.

Switching to the next foe, Zane hits one more time, possibly breaking the man's collarbone.

Deciding not to get into a spell battle, Beltrin flies into a rage--leaving his two spellcasting companions behind and charges the man Yondrim nearly killed seconds ago. He's dead for sure now that Beltrin splits his skull.

Sidestepping, Alexi finishes off the thug Beri just attacked, leaving the pair with only one man standing against them.

Restlin manages to jump out of most of the blast, but still gets toasted in the process.

"Enough of this! Zeoll, I bid you farewell!" The wizard decides to seek cover - preferably a merchant's cart that can provide full cover. He'll cast resist energy (vs fire, obviously) before considering his next move.

Jim: I'll leave it to you to tell me how much, if any, cover Restlin can find.

OOC: First off, dear kindly DM Jim, can Zeoll have used an immediate action to help Alexi confirm a crit? That would have been with a Timely Inspiration spell, which Zeoll had just mentioned he wanted to do if the possibility arose.

Either way, Zeoll tries to dodge out of the way of the fire. His reflex mod is a +5, and he rolls a 14! He misses by one! As he takes the full 26 points of damage, he regrets that his Timely Inspiration spell only works for attacks and skill checks, not saves!

And where does that leave poor Zeoll? It puts him at exactly two hit points! At this point, with no healing available to him, Zeoll looks side to side. Is there a shopfront or door he can enter? Like Restlin, Zeoll needs to take cover, preferably total cover.

If Zeoll can get to cover with a 40ft move, he will cast a Cacophonous Call on an enemy, prefereably the one who has been tossing fireballs, and then dive for cover, into a shop, say. Or if discretion is the better part, he'll take a double move to find refuge. Maybe into one of the glassblower shops.

DM Jim: My first impression is no, since it's not technically an attack roll or skill check. But I've asked on the rules board for clarification.

"Zeoll, I love being us, do you know that? We get torched and our friends behead the poor dumb bastard who did it. You can't buy friends like that, no sir you can't."

OOC: I'm not sure if we're still in combat, so I'm just casting CLW once. Let me know if I can start poking the rest of us.

Use a Wand, Staff, or Other Spell Trigger Item: Normally, to use a wand, you must have the wand's spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill allows you to use a wand as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. Failing the roll does not expend a charge.

Try Again?
Yes, but if you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can't try to activate that item again for 24 hours.

With the threat gone and the battle over, the anger he felt inside leaves him suddenly only to be replaced by a deep weariness. He leaves Otto's body where it falls and slowly makes his way to the surrender thug, breathing heavily.

"Your weapons... there." Yondrim says to the thug, pointing to the street next to him with his still dripping sword. Assuming the man complies, Yondrim continues, his breathing coming easier now. "Why were you here?"

As the centaur listens to the man's answer he mutters to himself and runs his hands over his wounds. They glow a soft pale green and the broken skin knits together.

"Why were we here? We're the Protector group for this series of blocks!" Looking around at this fallen mates, "Or at least we were." The surrendered thug does indeed have a patch on his tunic noting he belongs to the Deadly Dagger group, as does the others. "We were just doing our afternoon patrol when he," pointing to Zeoll, "cast a spell to make us impotent!"

In total the group finds 20 +1 daggers all of the same style with the DD crest engraved upon them. 8 chain shirts. 1 +2 chain shirt. 1 +2 longsword. 1 Bracers of armor +2. 1 Wand of Fireballs.

This takes about 3 rounds

Zeoll does indeed feel much better as he heals himself with three taps of the CLW wand, but it's at this time he notices a large group of youth's exiting a side street--all wearing red bandannas, some 60' from the group and heading their way. To the perceptive eye, some of them are pointing to Ed's shop about 10' away from the IA.

As he spots the group of youths approaching he lets out a sigh and rubs his face, though he only manages to smear more blood on his face instead of wipe it away. Without looking back at the surrendered "protector", he points at the ground, "Sit and stay here. Don't try to run and make me chase you."

He shifts his stance to look a the approaching group, his sword still out with the point rest on the ground. With luck, these youths would see the bodies and the blood covered warriors around them and think that maybe today would be a good day to find somewhere else to be.

"Ho there, lads. Go fetch a guardsman for us. There's been a fight we need to report. They'll be coin in it for you when you come back."

Those poor children; encapsulated in a cloud of nauseating gas, many succumb to it's foul odor and begin to wretch where they stand. Their eyes burn, their lungs burn, it's all they can do to try and find a way out of the noxious gas without tripping and falling over each other and the vomit that is coating themselves and the cobblestones they tread upon. Various outcries can be heard by the IA, such as:

Oh by the gods, why!?

My mommas cabbage stew!

Not on me!

I think I sharted!

The group notices several in the youth group, six in all, that seem unaffected or were just outside of Beltrin's area of effect. One of these youths (#5) that was just outside the area of effect, takes a step forward and Zeoll lets loose his spell, but it doesn't seem to affect the lad (save 22) as he lets loose a club at Ed's front window. The club sails high and smacks in between the bars that cover the window and crashes through. The lad gives a fist pump and runs into the stinking cloud to escape, not thinking about its possible effects and promptly doubles over and starts to vomit on himself. Another youth (a) out in front of the cloud instead decides to duck down an alleyway and is out of sight. The rest, as able as they are, move away from the IA heading back from whence they came.

When targeting with some area effect spells, as per the rules, please choose an intersection of the square that you're targeting, or I will and it may not be to your liking. In this case, I chose AE/AF 6/7 as it was in the middle of the street and the group.

OOC: Ha! Too bad they didn't see the beheaded man, the head staring out at a youth in horror of having lost it's body, the guts spewed all around, the blood running in a stream into the gutter at their feet, and the grey brain matter they just stomped on and decide not to mess with us in the first place... lol. :)

IC: Alexi answers the Neighborhood Watch Patrolman when the street is again its normal placid bird-tweeting serenity. "The liontaur, waving his hands about, is fairly normal for liontaurs. And any strange words you heard in your head were only heard by you, I imagine, as I didn't hear anything. Like I said. Feel free to inquire from these eye-witnesses as to who started the fight.

Then Alexi stares him in the eyes and grasps the man's forearm, However, if you are truely having trouble with real thieves, ruffians, and punks like those, don't give up on your duty as the protector of this block. But who's the real boss? Surely it's not him? Alexi points at the dead leader.

Beriothian smacks Alexi upside the head for his rude behavior towards the survivor and his ill manners toward the dead.

Alexi, a spell was clearly sung by our bard. It was a defensive and nonviolent spell for which numerous apologies were issued and we peacefully stood there and let them remove the spell, but it was cast by us none the less. You are right that the actual bloodshed is on them by repeatedly insisting on responding with violence, especially when you consider that the spell had been broken on most of them and peace called for before any blood was drawn, but that doesn't take away our part in this. It was simply a case of courageous men responding aggressively to our misguided act.

And don't speak ill of ANY those that have been lost today. Their leader may have been mistaking to let combat ensue instead of just accepting our apologies, but he was still just doing what he thought best for the citizens he was protecting. And with punks like the ones that just went running it's understandable that they are on edge, look for yourself at the damage they caused in just the few seconds they were here. Their leader had the courage to patrol this area knowing that things can go from peaceful to chaos in the blink of an eye, and his actions are deserving of your respect.

The Sgt. cocks an eyebrow and asks no one in particular in the group, "So, what's your side of the story?" Sgt. Jute and his nine men are evenly spaced about the group and are armed with spears, shields and wearing chainmail armor.

IC: Alexi has calmly waited for a turn to speak, believing that his friends would be persuasive enough, but it is clear that the sergeant was intend on doing a thorough job.

"I was in the street, Sir Sergeant. I was right there leaning against Ed's shop. See, where all the broken glass is? That's where I was standing. So the statement by Sam, here, 'They jumped outa nowhere' is false. Nor was I the only one in the street. The Minotaur was with me, and that young man with the topknot hair was out here too. We were about to start a game of cards to pass the time away while our friends tried to streighten out the animosity between Ed and Edna.

That's when this group of men came swagering down the street. They looked like the trouble-makers Ed had told us about. So a simple Calm Emotions spell was cast in hopes they'd just amble on away. That would give us time to get Ed and Edna back on good terms.

Unfortunately it did not work. Their leader got upset and asked if we wanted to fight. We said no. They threw several daggers at us, at which we only took defensive postures. Then our friend, not knowing what was going on, stepped out of Edna's and was not prepared for the dagger that hit him.

Can you blame him for retaliating?"

Alexi points to the scorch marks along the street. "This is where their wizard let loose two fireballs at us. And that's from a group that is supposed to protect this street and its shops. Would you say that burning down a block of shops is a rather crude form of protection?

You'll find that eye witnesses will testify to the truth of our account.

Beriothian leaves the shop with Bosk. When Sgt Jute turns toward him Beri gives his statement.
I don't think there is much more that I can add. When our bard saw a gang of armed men approaching he started singing a little ditty he knows to pacify those who are agitated or violent. In hind site this wasn't the wisest thing for him to do, and we stood there apologizing profusely for the act while they shook off the effects of the spell.

At that point at least two people had decided that bloodshed was necessary, the person who through the first dagger, and his leader who let his men continue throwing daggers at a group that was refusing to fight back. The streets cleared out pretty fast after the first dagger, but I noticed a few people watching through shop windows when the second dagger was thrown and actually hit it's target.

The point where things got out of hand was when the leader made some racial slurs ***I'm assuming cow-lovers counts since it's reducing a noble race to the level of cattle*** and they started attacking others in our group. Once it became clear they were out for blood we fought for our lives, and we stopped the instant they were willing.

It should also be noted that they didn't make this just a rough and tumble brawl, they used their superior numbers to surround flank us so they could attack us from behind. That's not to imply I didn't flank them right back when the opportunity arose, I just want to emphasize that they made it clear from the start that this was a fight for our lives.

Beri suddenly remembers the amount of blood that sprayed from his shoulder when he was attacked. Hopefully someone in their group can remove the massive blood stain on his back once this is over.

He is not yet a full fledged member, wears none of our markings or insignia, has never fought with us or worked with us before, and was not present when our groups met today. They had no way of knowing that the centaur exiting the shop was with us, yet chose to attack him first with a dagger thrown from 50ft rather than the bard singing his calming song.

I would also like to point out that we tried to avoid a fight, and that as soon as he quit fighting us we immediately did the same and no harm came to him. If it was like he said, and that we were fighting and killing for no reason, then we would likely not have stopped swinging our swords the second he laid down his dagger. I even offered to preserve his friends' bodies so that they could be resurrected if so desired.

Sgt Jute --- Jim C
Thursday March 15th, 2012 9:57:52 PM

Sgt. Jute takes down everything said and after looking to see if Bosk and the rest are armed, which they are, he asks one simple question, "Unruly? How were they unruly before they reached you?"

Zeoll (HP17 of 35, AC22, CMD17)
Thursday March 15th, 2012 10:16:02 PM

Zeoll answers. "They werre a larrge arrmed grroup lacking any insignia that I could see. We had been warrned that thugs were apprroaching. That was enough forr me to cast my Calming spell, a harrmless spell that includes no coerrcion otherr than to keep the peace. It is a spell that ends if you arre attacked. Indeed, it was verry easy forr those not affected to slap theirr comrrades out of it."

He looks the lawman in the eye. "That was my judgement call. And my action was followed by negotiation, not aggrression, until they attacked with lethal forrce. They werre the firrst to spill blood."

One or the other --- Jim C
Thursday March 15th, 2012 10:39:07 PM

"Lacking any insignia, hmm. I should just state for the record, a lack of insignia does not make for an unruly mob of brigands that are on open season for a quick to cast spell-user." Turning to his men he walks off and confers with them for a few minutes and returns. "It seems we have some conflicting views on what happened based on witness reports. It would seem your man there, Yondrim is it? Came out of the shop as you stated and joined you, Zeoll. He then drew his sword and cast a spell. Unlike several of you who are well learned in spellcraft, the average man such as myself knows very little about the workings of a spell. So when you say it's harmless, it's not so in the eyes of the law." Taking a breath, he continues, "So we can handle this one of two ways. I can arrest you all for assault and battery, disturbing the peace and whatever else I can find and take you all away in manacles and let this districts magistrate sort it all out while you all rot in jail for what, proabably a week or more? Or both parties can agree not to file charges against the other and walk away--since both parties are in my opinion, culpable in what transpired here."

Pointing to Sam the prisoner, "You, how do you want to proceed?"

Sam shrugs, "Uh, well, as long as I get to take my stuff and uh don't get followed by these bastards, I'm not wanting to press any charges."

"So eloquently said." Looking to the group, Sgt Jute asks, "And you lot, what's your decision?"

So how do we wish to go about investigating this address? The way I see it, our options are to
1) Ask around about the address. This could get us a little more information on what to expect before barging in, but word may get back to the assassin. However he may also have no informants as we is trying to keep a low profile.
2) We could stake out the area to observe who and what is inside. Ounce again we risk the chance of discovery, but we will be better prepared.
3) We can ring the bell and barge in, but if he is an assassin he probably has a few traps set up for us and we have already used up a fair number of spells today.

"Perhaps the less conspicuous of us should stake out the place while those that may be easier to spot ask around. After we've all done our information gathering, we can meet up and decide what our next move should be"

OOC: I don't really like splitting the party, but it makes sense for Beltrin, Beri, Alexi and Restlin to keep the place under surveillance while the taurs try to find out if anyone knows anything about the place.

Zeoll agrees that the problem with spying is that the Iron Adventurers are neither subtle nor anonymous. But Zeoll has ways to get information that are far beyond the capabilities of most mortals. Way.

First, he looks at the birds flying overhead for ten minutes for divine inspiration (Natural Divination grants a +10, but he does not use it yet!).

Then he gathers information about that address by stopping by taverns and shops in the general vicinity [OOC: I'm talking about the standard Gather Info check, BTW]. This takes 1d4 hours, and Zeoll rolls 3 hours. He hopes his friends will stay nearby in case he gets in trouble -- hopefully there will be none over that time span. His Gather Info Diplomacy Check is a 35! (not using his Natural Divination) Woot!

Then Zeoll casts a Heroism Spell.

Then he asks Beltrin for that Invisibility spell he's been hoarding, and maybe that Fly if he can spare it. Zeoll wants to just walk by the address on the other side of the street, maybe flying 10 or 15 ft off the ground, just to have a looky-loo. Not coming near, not stopping, not doing anything dangerous.

Here's a Perception check for the fly-by, with the Heroism but not the Nat Div. His Perception roll for that is a 36! Woot!

Finally, Zeoll just sits and thinks about that address/site and considers what odd factoid he may have forgotten about it, but might remember if he used his divine powers of recall. That's a Know Local check using the +2 Heroism but not the Nat Div. His roll for Know Local is a 23. That's not good enough! He digs deep into his divine lore, and uses his Power of Recall (Memory Subdomain) to reroll that check, with an extra +7 from his Chr Mod. He ALSO uses his Bardic Lore ability to take 20 on this knowledge check. And he uses, at last, his Natural Divination. With no need to roll, Zeoll's final Knowledge Local check on this address is a 20 (taking 20) +10 (usual) +2 (heroism) +7 (memory Subdomain Recall) +10 (Natural Divination) = Know Local check 49! Woot!

(Maybe his friend Bosk can give him a Guidance cantrip to bring that to a neat round 50?)

After all that, Zeoll figures he'll have SOME new information for the group! :-)

And, depending on the results, he thinks about going home and starting fresh in the morning. Unless his investigations suggest that there is some urgency to the matter.

The only split is a few rounds when Zeoll does a quick fly-by or walk-by while invisible of the address, from the other side of the street, making no muss or fuss, skeedaddling at the smallest sign of trouble, flying out of there if anything unusual happens, just hoping for a peek at the exterior of the building, acting entirely like a cowardly liontaur in every regard.

:-)

Beltrin will help Zeoll out with his spells as requested. Unless his fellows have a different idea, he'll tag along with them as Zeoll sweet talks his way around town.

OOC: Beltrin will take the extra wand of fireball for the moment, since Restlin already has one. Although the image of Restlin pulling out two wands from hip holsters and firing off fireballs willy-nilly like a western gunslinger is pretty priceless.

Treasure splits --- Jim C
Wednesday March 21st, 2012 12:20:31 AM

ooc: it's completely up to you guys how you do the treasure splits. Most groups sell everything off to the Catacombs and split the money equally, but allow those members who want something in the treasure to pay for it at a 10% discount--which is what they would get from the Catacombs. I'm just reiterating this because DM's are held to the minimum wealth level in all games. So if I show that you're all above minimum wealth level because of the loot I've given out is based on an equal share--but if it turns out that some have a lot more or a lot less because of non-equal shares, then please understand that is your decision, not mine.

My guess is that would attract a lot of attention. I think we would be better off if we could find somewhere close by the watch discretely from. Perhaps there is a bar or restaurant close by with a view of the place or a room or building for rent close by. By guess is that if this guy is from out of town he most likely doesn't own property here. If he is renting a room there are likely others close by. If he is at a hotel we could possibly get Sanji or some of the others from Mudtown to rent a room there and be our eyes and ears.
