Beri carefully searches the new room for clues as two who attacked and what they were after. The obvious guess would be that he was looking for a girl, of which there were pleanty living here, but this carnage is over the top for that. Beri uses his experience as a rogue to try to determine if the attackers were searching for something while they were here.

Despite being well-acquainted with violence, this sort of slaughter is almost too much for Beltrin. He staggers a bit and calls out to his companions: "More bodies in here... a lot more. I think that we need to check in on all of our acquaintances as soon as we can. I'm worried about Sanji and the other staff at the shop in Mudtown."

He opens the doors to the back garden and takes a look around. Assuming nothing dangerous is found, he'll go and let Alexi in through the back gate.

Bosk looks down upon the carnage, unable to comprehend how one person could have killed so many without drawing attention or letting anyone leave the premises to raise the alarm. He is further awed when he realizes that despite his amazing acrobatic skills his hoof still leave prints in the carpet, although not surprising given the amount of blood on the ground, he is amazed that the assassin's prints haven't been seen yet. Look down, my hooves are leaving prints in the carpet. Perhaps the assassin made similar tracks as he left. We should try to check all entrances and windows for such tracks. I also need to see if I can get rid of this stupid anti magic field. He then steps outside of the field and casts dispel magic on it and begins checking the doorways for footprints.

Zeoll urges the group to stick together and quickly search the whole building. He'll do that either way.

By the way, does an inspection of the bodies and blood reveal how the victims died? Did they fight? Did they die elsewhere and get dragged? Were they bound?

He suggests asking the neighbors if they heard anything.

Exasperated at his lack of success in spellcasting and remembering his old masters words, "There is no try. Do or do not."Obviously the old man was a crock since Restlin also remembers faint memories of the master wearing a tutu and wielding a baton, but he had mentally blocked out the image over the years.

Zane was a bit more successful as he entered the kitchen and found it spotless. After a detect magic spell he was certain that a permanent Unseen Servant was in effect in the room.

In the backroom, Beri finds nothing to give him any more of an idea of who did this. All he finds are more girls with their throats cut.

Waving down some city guards, Yondrim begins to tell them what's happened.

Opening up the backdoor to the garden, Beltrin sees the bodies of Mistress Marta and Twice tied to a tree in the center of the zen-like garden. Both of their throats have been slit, ear to ear, and are quite dead.

Trying to figure out how one man could have done this, it's almost impossible to discern how many people have been in the room as it's covered wall to wall in bodies and blood. Casting his dispel magic spell, Bosk finds that the dampening effect is still in effect afterwards.

Carefully searching the bodies, Zeoll determines that most of the blade attacks were from above. Either the attacker(s) were very tall, hanging from the ceiling and long limbed, or they were flying. Noticing the lack of footprints in the area, flying would be the best bet.

Speaking with the guard, Yondrim waves his hands around in broad gestures just to drive home the scale and brutality of the scene... and does his best to convince the guard that the Iron Adventures didn't just murder a bunch of people and wanted to brag about it.

"Now this is a damn shame. Your dealings with the two of them were before my time. How in-cahoots were Marta and Heather? Are we the common thread here, or did they likely piss off the wrong people without our help?"

Bosk returns to the scene and collects the broken dagger, hoping that he can use it later as part of a spell component. He quickly collects blood samples from Mistress Marta, Twice, and someone that looks like they died of a wound from the dagger (preferably the guard or someone that looks like they died fighting back and aware of what was going on) so that he can use blood biography on them after leaving the magic dampening field. He then goes upstairs and searches the rogue's room carefully, keeping a particular eye out for traps and he looks secrete compartments and such that may hide poison, thieves tools, etc and anything that may be incriminating of the young rogue or that may provide the group with clues.

When he rejoins the group and waits for the guards he suggests their next stop should be to visit he docks in Labor Town to see if they can learn more about the bead.

(ooc: Twice and Mistress Marta are friends of the group and Bosk along with a few of the others were trying to help Twice get back onto the right path. The group is privy to information about Twice's rogue activities in Mudtown that Martha didn't want made public or known in Hook CIty. Bosk is not intending to loot the place or take anything of value for value sake. He is trying to gather clues, and if necessary keep shame and dishonor from falling upon the deceased. He is also hoping any poison or thieves tools he may find will help he locate Twice's connections in Mudtown, and that they can provide the group with information.)

In response to Restlin's questions, for once Beltrin doesn't have many answers. "I couldn't tell you much more, I only met them once, and we didn't talk about much of substance. I don't know if they knew Heather well, but given that De Rais is still at large, I fear that we are indeed the common thread. Whoever organized these killings has money, power, magical knowledge and severe cruelty. De Rais fits the bill for all of those."

Zeoll explains what he knows, prefacing his comments with the need for discretion in repeating this to others.

"Marrta operrated a school forr young women. Herr son, Twice, fell into ill rrepute and dissolution. We werre engaged to find him in Mudtown and to brring him home. We found him in a hospice/flophouse rrun by the Brrody clan in Mudtown. That's how we met Heatherr. We became friends with Heatherr and herr siblings. And we befrriended Twice and brrought him home."

"So you see, therre arre two common thrreads herre. We ourrselves, and Twice. We know of no one who wished ill to both Marrta and Heatherr. Maybe Twice did."

Zeoll pauses, overcome for a moment with the stench of blood and the tragedy of what has taken place here and at Heather's residence.

Collecting taking his blood samples, Bosk heads upstairs to inspect Twices' room. After a very careful search of Twice's room, Bosk comes to the conclusion that the man hardly ever stayed there. It was too neat, too clean, too organized--something Twice was not known for. Downstairs he reconvenes with the others as Alexi yells out for someone to open the damn gate--no one has to this point.

It is shortly thereafter that Yondrim returns with ten city guard in tow--more are soon to arrive. They address the group and ask to see their papers as Yondrim explained to them that they were under the protection of a Letter of Marque. Addressing no one in particular, the leader asks, "What happened here?"

Zeoll lets Alexi in, although he expresses his confusion. "How did you get out herre anyway?"

At the sound of the gendarmes, Zeoll wishes he had prepped his "Innocence" spell, but decides that the truth will have to suffice. He sets out to talk with them.

He quickly explains, "We arre the Irron Adventurrerrs, a rregisterred grroup of herroes in serrvice to Hook City. We have a Letterr of Marrque frrom Inspectorr Aulanderr to act as an investigating agent rregarrding the death of one Heatherr Brroderry. Ourr investigations led us to this school forr young ladies, wherre we found a scene of incrredible trragedy and carrnage."

"Someone has brrutally murrdered the entirrety of the household, some dozens of innocents, including the ownerr of the school, a Mistrress Marrta, and her son, who knew Heatherr Brroderry. Therre is much herre in common with the Brroderry murrderr. Both happened at about the same time. Both featurre an antimagic field of some sort that supprresses attempts at divination. We deduce that the killer was empowerred with magical flight, and attacked frrom above."

Once Yondrim returns with the guard and Zeoll takes charge of seeing to the Hook City officials, Yondrim moves off to investigate the magic field once again. He'll use detect magic and orisons to see if he can determine the size and shape of the field.. is it circular, square, rhombus? Or does it fit exactly within the walls of the building?

As the gate is opened Aklexi says, "Thanks. I thought I was going to have to Huff-n-Puff and blow the gate down."

Zeoll lets Alexi in, although he expresses his confusion. "How did you get out herre anyway?"

Alexi shruggs and points to the little path that led beside the house to the front. "Should I have left a trail of breadcrumbs?"

Alexi can only shake his head when he sees blood spattered shoes and hooves of his friends. "So much for not contaminating the crime scene," he mumbles.

Alexi lets Zeol do the explaining, mainly because he really doesn't know much, not having tromped around in the bloody mess.

Introducing himself as the person in charge of his patrol, Sgt. Yundt asks everyone to vacate the premises and wait for the coroner and his investigation team to arrive.

It takes a while...

Almost thirty minutes later the coroner and six others arrive. They ask no question or introduce themselves. They immediately go about the task of casting spell after spell. They do not step into the area, instead they levitate and carefully push off walls and such and hover inches above the bodies to collect evidence. They are fairly thorough and when done about another half hour later, they question the Iron Adventurers.

"I am Mr. Puils, the coroner for this district. Please tell me what you saw and smelled when you entered this area. And please, do so with your eyes closed, thank you."

The coroner squints hard when Zeoll does not close his eyes, and even gets withing breathing distance of the Liontaur which sorta makes Zeoll a little uncomfortable, that and the way the coroner smells--like rubbing alcohol. When Zeoll finishes his story the coroner asks the Liontaur to answer this question:

"A woman attends the funeral of her father and while there she meets a man who soothes her depression and actually makes her feel better about the circumstances and she enjoys his company. When the funeral is over, she realizes she never learned the man's name. Three days later she kills her sister, why?"

After Zeoll answers the coroner's question Bosk responds, despite not being directly asked the question. Wait, are you saying the murder might be Heather or Marta's sister? The cleric waits for a response and before anyone else recounts what they saw Bosk asks the coroner (and looks for approval of the coroner's actions from the guards), I'm not trying to be rude, but before we continue, can you please tell me why a coroner needs this information? I thought your job was to prepare and preserve the bodies. Sorry if I'm being overly cautious, but I have a feeling that whoever did this is likely to be coming after us for discovering the bodies here and investigating Heather's murder.

Surely if the coroner is asking a mind bender involving murder it is related to the grizzly scene inside. But it wouldn't make sense to ask unless the puzzle DID contain all the clues necessary to solve... unless the clue is in the actual murder scene they were just investigating. On the other hand, it is entirely possible the coroner just has a dark sense of humor. What ever the reason is for asking, the rogue feels a little foolish that he can't warp his mind around the answer.

Then addressing the rest of the group, "My work here is done. I'll be filing my report with Inspector Aulander since he is your liason at the department. I'll have the clean-up crew come and take the bodies away shortly. Until then, please vacate the premises and have a good day." Mr. Puils leaves with his crew and Sgt Yundt then ushers everyone out of the compound--locking and sealing the doorway behind him. He assigns two of his guards to stay at the doors until the clean-up crew arrives, says his goodbyes to the Iron Adventurers, then leaves with the remainder of his patrol.

Rousted from the back garden by the investigators, Beltrin joins the others on the street. "If I was a skeptical man, I'd say that the man was her sister's husband. But I'm trying to keep an optimistic look on life these days. I agree with Yondrim that we should see if we can find out anything we can about the bead next and the labor district sounds like a good place to start."

"I imagine the magic fields were cast to prevent escape and detection, I don't imagine he realizes a piece of a knife were left behind, or even if he should know about it, I very much doubt any magic was built into the knife to prevent anyone from finding the source of the knife. As to the bead.. I have no clue about it, I'm more into weapons, and unless it's to do with the order of monks I was raised by......."

Zeoll is not sure that Labortown is the best first place to work, but he does not object.

He is thinking, however, that if the bead is not from Hook City (a factoid I think we know), then the docks or the merchants in Mudtown might know more. That can be a next step.

We know a very powerful and respected wizard in the city, but anyone trying to attack him would be signing their own death certificate. Besides, he's almost certainly one of the few who's already been notified of what happened. Labortown is probably our best bet at this point.

Alexi agrees that a search in the labor sectors is just as good as any place to start and follows along as he hasn't been to that part of the city yet.
