Pathfinder switch -- DM Jim
Friday July 16th, 2010 8:17:40 PM

ooc: character conversion is slated for November... I'm already working on my character in another game, but the actual switch over, when we start using Pathfinder and our converted characters will begin Jan 1, 2011. So we have plenty of time for Mara to amaze us with her tripping skills :)

XP award -- DM Jim
Friday July 16th, 2010 8:21:11 PM

It's been a little while, so here is some more XP :)

Everyone, except Mara, gets 150xp for posting to date. Mara gets 50xp.

Cesar, Ransy and Mara get an additional 50xp for combat.

Construction on the rooms is to begin later this morning as it is past midnight (day 17 morning).

Valla is still no where to be found, and Zeoll's link to his dog is gone (I think I said that before).

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Friday July 16th, 2010 8:49:50 PM

Beriothian sheaths his weapons.
Looks like you two ran into trouble. This fight probably would have turned out very differently had the
woman sided with the horse thieves, you should thank Wardd that this was not the case.

Beriothian turns to Mara and shakes her hand.
I am Beriothian. It's a rare pleasure to meet a person who sides with virtue in these parts. As for these... men... I am sure that they are no friends of ours, but perhaps we've seen these vermin hanging around before.
Beriothian looks over the beaten thieves to see if he recognizes them from somewhere, perhaps from the bar.

Take 10 spot check = 19

ooc: The notes said we start converting characters November first and the official change is January first. I would start looking at the changes sooner than that though, so that you can better plan skills you get next level.

Also, I believe that improved trip is less powerful in PF, though I haven't confirmed that.

Outside the Madrigal -- DM Jim
Friday July 16th, 2010 9:04:21 PM

Beri does not recognize these men (and you can't take 10 on Spot)

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36, Rage 4/7: AC 15, HP 34/42)
Friday July 16th, 2010 9:05:55 PM

OOC: When it comes time to convert over, is it okay if we do some surgery to our characters? I'll be honest and admit that Mara is a trip-monkey, so I would want to take her in a different direction under Pathfinder rules.

Mara looks at Beriothian's outstretched hand, but merely nods toward him, not taking her grip off of her polearm. "And likewise" She turns back to the thieves, "Well, boys? Don't be shy, now. Because you will be shy and dead if I don't see you hop to."

Character surgery -- DM Jim
Friday July 16th, 2010 9:11:35 PM

Any character surgery requires permission from Jerry the CDM and me. If you have an idea of what you want, then you need to run it by us first, but this will all take place during November and I don't think Jerry will entertain Pathfinder surgery ideas before then.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Friday July 16th, 2010 9:23:34 PM

ooc: I thought I could. Under disguise it says
"If you come to the attention of people who are suspicious (such as a guard who is watching commoners walking through a city gate), it can be assumed that such observers are taking 10 on their Spot checks. "
I know it's not exactly the same, but I thought it meant I could take 10 on Spot checks.

Take 10 on Spot -- DM Jim
Friday July 16th, 2010 9:56:47 PM

Hey, that's a good argument, so I'll allow it. Beri still doesn't recognize them :)

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36, Rage 4/7: AC 15, HP 34/42)
Friday July 16th, 2010 10:02:48 PM

OOC: Since Fighters are much more capable in PF, I would change Mara to a pure fighter and switch a few feats. Nothing big, really.

Sounds alright to me. When the time comes, remind me. DM Jim

Maikill HP (33) 21/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON
Friday July 16th, 2010 10:05:19 PM

Maikill looks over at Ransy with a weak smile.

"So I was right, Valla not here. Only drunk thieves like always. Lucky lady came save you."

Maikill tosses the rope back to Ransy.

"Shop too crowded already, no room for thieves. She right, let them go without weapons, clothes too."

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35
Saturday July 17th, 2010 3:56:50 AM

we shouldn't take their clothes nor their armor; that would make them too vulnerable in this city. Just take their money and weapons, that should be enough punishment.

OOC: what about Ransy's heal check (19)? Was he able to stabilize one of the thieves?

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36, Rage 4/7: AC 15, HP 34/42)
Saturday July 17th, 2010 9:26:24 AM

Mara shrugs, "Fine by me. You can take their money and weapons. I will take their clothing." She turns to the lead thief again, "Now strip, or I will lop off your head like a melon, boy."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Saturday July 17th, 2010 12:23:40 PM

Better do what she says if you want to live to see morning.

The Madrigal -- DM Jim
Saturday July 17th, 2010 4:33:34 PM

Stripped of everything, the two thieves run off into the night, leaving their four unconscious comrades behind.

What to do...

In Mudtown leaving four bodies in the middle of a street could lead to bad things for those four. By trial of combat their possessions were rightfully owned now by the IA, but their lives were a different matter all together. One was dead, but the others were still living and stabilized by Ransy's hand. A normal resident of Mudtown would leave the bodies, but a normal resident wasn't good of heart. If left here they could be killed, or worse, taken as slaves much like Cesar and Ransy had.

What to do...

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 28/36)
Saturday July 17th, 2010 7:46:41 PM

Mara nods in satisfaction to see the nude ne'er-do-wells run down the street. "Serves them right; drawing steel for a horse in the middle of the street." She turns and regards the four unconscious forms for a moment. "I'm afraid I am new to Mudtown. Is there anything akin to law enforcement in this city? A jail, perhaps?"

Maikill HP (33) 21/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON
Saturday July 17th, 2010 11:45:59 PM

"We waste time, no room in shop for them. Put them in Madrigal, maybe they be okay. Maybe not, they not good men. Let's go back, sleep and heal soon."

Maikill will start to drag one of the men into the building.

Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21  d20+7=15 ;
Sunday July 18th, 2010 7:39:45 AM

"I don't believe there's anything akin to law enforcement in Mud Town a part from us... we can't possibly keep them with us, but alas we also can't leave them here. I'm with Maikill in putting them in the Madrigal, patching them up and leaving them to their own means"

Cesar will help Maikill take the assailants to the Madrigal and then will patch them up as best as possible.

Heal, take 20 = 27

otherwise roll = 15

"And now that this is done, why don't we go back to the shop for our long needed rest?

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35
Sunday July 18th, 2010 10:39:19 AM

Ransy helps Maikill and Cesar move the unconscious thieves to the Madrigal.

Why don't we rest here? There are beds here, though they are a bit lousy.. Tomorrow these men will be conscious again, I think, so they can save themselves then.

Ransy takes the money and the weapons away, for safekeeping:
I hereby declare that these are property of the new law authority of Mudtown; the money will be used to pay for law enforcement officers and a prison; that is, if and when we succeed in collecting enough money to do so. That may take a long time yet, but nevertheless, the begin is here.

OOC: I, Wilson, am going on holiday; in the meantime Cayzle will post for me. Cayzle, go ahead! Thanks

Maikill HP (33) 21/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON
Sunday July 18th, 2010 2:49:36 PM

"What? Okay, maybe this was not my fight but I think the woman here beat these men. It isn't for me to say where this money goes, but when I fight I don't give the spoils away for 'officers' or prisons. Maybe we should have a talk about what your plans are. You are new to the group and seem to have a few plans the rest of us don't know about."

Maikill catches himself in a long speech and adds

"What I know, I like fight, not smart. I am going back to shop now."

Maikill turns and starts to walk back 'home'.

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14 of 14, -2 nonlethal)
Sunday July 18th, 2010 7:01:43 PM

Zeoll watches over Roy and also prowls around the dwelling. Where is he, exactly, anyway? What's it like here? What are the exits and entrances? Is anyone else in the building?

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Sunday July 18th, 2010 7:02:09 PM

Ransy, you are not in charge here. For that matter, Mara is the one who did all the work in that fight from what I can see. How is your claiming the goods and declaring that you are using it for a jail and officers any different than stealing from Mara, not to mention every one else that had a hand in that fight. You can set aside your personal share for anything you like of course.

ooc: What did we find after the battle?

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 28/36)
Sunday July 18th, 2010 11:33:57 PM

Mara stays poignantly quiet as she begins to gather the equipment from the fallen enemies.

The Madrigal -- DM Jim
Monday July 19th, 2010 2:45:40 AM

Gathering up three short swords and three longswords, all of average make and look to be uncared for, Beri and Mara find also about 35gp total on all the bodies and clothing.

Mara waits patiently as Ransy and the others take the unconscious and stabilized men into the Madrigal, out of the rain. Maikill has already left for the shop and it's uncertain if the rest will return to the shop or stay with the unconscious men.

Back at the shop Zeoll snoops around. He figures the downstairs show room is about 40'x20' with a small kitchen in the back with the only exits out of the place is the front door and a backdoor in the kitchen area. Upstairs are three bedrooms--one a master suite occupied by Hemust and Jillian, and one other occupied by Sanji. The remaining unclaimed room is too small for a Taur, as it was furnished to be a small girls room, and the downstairs is even more crowded when it comes to sleeping conditions when the entire group is here.

Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21
Monday July 19th, 2010 3:24:39 AM

"Sleep here, sleep there... who cares! I just want to have a rest! We've had our fair share of action and I would REALLY like to lay my head down on something soft and snuggle down to sleep! Ransy: this place isn't ours and sleeping here would be trespassing on private property or something like that and it's bad. Maikill just left to go back to the shop, so let's just follow him. And, albeit I understand the need for law enforcement here in Mud Town, I also believe it might not be the top priority for everyone in the group, so before you go around declaring stuff and such, please consult the rest of us, ok? And regarding this thing, I have a few ideas I'd like to discuss with you, but only AFTER I get some sleep!"

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14 of 14, -2 nonlethal)  d20+8=12 ;
Monday July 19th, 2010 6:33:38 AM

Zeoll introduces himself to Hemust, Jillian, and Sanji. He makes some conversation, sounds them out. Who they are, what they do. So, what do they sell here? How did Zeoll's new friends come to be staying here, in this decidedly non-heroic location? He sings them a little song before bed. Perform 12. Not really noteworthy, alas.

It's way past midnight and everyone is asleep, did you want to wake them up? :) DM Jim

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle]
Monday July 19th, 2010 6:46:56 AM

Ransy looks a little abashed. My apologies, friends. My zeal got the better of me for a moment. Of course, it is not just or right to create the things a civilized place needs, such as a jail, from resources to which one is not entitled. Truly, I meant that MY share of this treasure will be used for such an endeavor.

He holds out his hand to Mara. Your idea of putting these criminals in jail is an excellent one. One I wish we could achieve. But Mudtown is a lawless and wild place. One of the things I hope to accomplish is to make this place safer for innocents and everyday folk."

Anyway, I am Ransy, a champion of the weak and protector of all that is Good. I am very pleased to meet you, Miss, uh, Mara.

He explains a little more. We came here to search for a missing friend, with no success. We have these villains here, and we will put them in what is left of this inn over there. It is in its current abandoned state because earlier today we fought there, did some little damage to the structure, and found an evil temple and a mind flayer, which we defeated through the favor of the gods.

We left some friends behind in a shop. Maybe we should go there and spend the night, the better if we are all together in this lawless place, and face the dawn together.

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 28/36)
Monday July 19th, 2010 8:08:41 AM

Mara chuckles at the paladin's remarks, "You found and defeated an evil temple and a mindflayer just earlier today? You sound like an interesting bunch; I will say that. A good night's sleep sounds delightful. You own a shop or store of some kind?" Mara follows them to the shop for the evening.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Monday July 19th, 2010 11:13:25 AM

ooc: Can't we take them to the guards on the outskirts of hook city? I don't remember for sure, but I believe that's what we did with prior captives.

You could try that, but it's a ways away and there are no other witnesses but you. I believe you had Pen back then to verify the situation. DM Jim

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Monday July 19th, 2010 8:21:36 PM

Home to bed sounds like a good plan, it's been a long night.

The Shop -- DM Jim  d6=4 ; d20+2=17 ;
Monday July 19th, 2010 10:20:40 PM

Deciding to leave the unconscious men in the Madrigal and head back to the shop, everyone arrives safely back "home." It is a cramped affair with the sleeping situation, but everyone manages to get some sleep.

DAY 17

In the morning, everyone is roused from sleep by the persistent knocking on the front door. Answering it, the group see's a man at the door and about 10 men milling behind him by a wagon, taking cover under a canvas flap extending from the wagon filled with tools and lumber. "Good morning!" he exclaims like there was actually something good about being in rainy Mudtown."I'm Gil and I'm here to build some rooms for you all. I do have the right place, right?"

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells

ooc: can I assume I prayed & got spells at dawn?

No. DM Jim

Ransy scans these folks to tell, so far as he is able, it their intent is evil ... or worse!

Also, as he engages the workers in conversation, Sense Motive at +8 ... 23!

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14 of 14)
Monday July 19th, 2010 11:46:12 PM

After resting, his nonlethal damage gone, Zeoll feels much better.

Zeoll checks on his ward, first thing. How is Roy? Any change?

OOC to DM: Was that haunted tower in Mudtown or Hook City proper? And did we ever get individual passport papers for movement in the city?

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 1:16:31 AM

Mara hangs back to avoid getting in the way of the craftsmen. "Interesting. Is this shop going to be converted into a residence completely?"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 1:40:40 AM

Glad to see you again Gil. You have the right place, we would like to add another wing onto the back of the shop. We probably have one or two additional people who are sick of sleeping on the floor who would like to add on a room as well.
Beriothian shows Gil where they would like the extra rooms added and describes the layout for the new wing.
After returning Beri answers Mara's question.
We plan on opening it back up as a shop shortly, which is one of the reasons we need the rooms built for us to sleep in. As it is, this building is far too crowded for our entire group plus the three friends we have running the shop.

ooc: I believe the tower is in Hook City, and we did not have the option of getting individual papers to enter the city.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells  d20=13 ;
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 11:51:43 AM

ooc: ignore the last post, I am not sure why it just reposted my previous post when I logged on.

Bosk wakes up and is surprised to see so many people outside and that it is so late in the morning. Before he can speak Beri speaks to Gil and the cleric realizes who the men are, or at least what they claim to be. He waits a few minutes to make sure the guys can be trusted before stepping aside. He reminds the others that he needs to spend some time in prayer to Gargul and asks them to keep an eye on him and to alert him should these guys be other than honest builders. Afterwards he will make a simple meal of bacon and eggs.

Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 12:13:29 PM

Maikill wakes up feeling horrible and weak from the prior days events. He stumbles to his feet and grabs a tankard of water which he quickly drains. Looking at the small pin prick in his hand he begins to rub at it, then puts it to his mouth and tries to suck away the poison. When he smells bacon frying he goes into the kitchen and speaks to Bosk.

"I no feel good. You take poison out? Maybe I need go find church or healer, they maybe take out poison. You tell me where go then I go soon."

The Shop -- DM Jim  d20+4=14 ;
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 1:16:53 PM

"Alrighty then," Gil says and looks at his work order. "I have a number of rooms to build and it shouldn't take more than all of today to do it. I need half now and half when they're completed. Also, is there any other additions you want me to build on?"

Sanji comes into the kitchen and looks at Bosk, eyes askance, "Here, let me help you out." She starts cooking up some more eggs and bacon and a lot of coffee to give to the workers to keep them motivated.

Currently everyone but Zeoll and Mara have paid for a room to be built, correct? There are no additional guestrooms but the one upstairs if Mara wanted to sleep there, but Zeoll is out of luck and sleeping in the rain everynight is going to be rough. If you want a stables built, it's only 100gp per horse. If Cesar didn't pick up on it, someone tried stealing his horse before they went to the Madrigal, hence his cut reins, but the horse came back.

LMK what your final plans are and unless you go somewhere else, you will not be able to study or pray for spells because of the noise of construction.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 1:45:23 PM

ooc: Do we wish to pay to have the two wands identified in Hook City?

Bosk agrees with Maikill. Some should go with Makill into town and to get him cured of his poison. I can go with him and hopefully find some where quiet to pray to Gargul for his daily blessing.

Before leaving Bosk will examine the two wands and try to determine what spells are stored in them. He will also ask Zeoll to try to recall if he has ever heard anything about the curved blades they found on the witches, and will speak to Gil to see how much it would cost to make the building more secure and harder for thieves to break into and if there is anything that could be done to protect the house against fire bombing.

Gil -- DM Jim
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 2:38:19 PM

"More secure? Why sure! I can install new doors, that's your biggest weakness there. All your windows have bars on them and they look like they're still in good shape. Depending on the door you want, the price will vary. I suggest at least two--the front and back doors, after that, well, if they're inside, it depends if you want to keep them out of the various rooms I guess." Gil gives you a price on the various doors he can install today:

Door, installed with:
Simple lock 25gp
Average lock 50gp
Good lock 100gp
Amazing lock 300gp

Currently all the doors have simple locks, including the three bedroom doors.

When it comes to fireproofing, he has no ideas other than hiring a mage to cast some sort of spell on it, or tearing down the building and putting up a stone one.

Sanji -- DM Jim
Tuesday July 20th, 2010 2:42:22 PM

Sanji interrupts before anyone decides to leave the shop so soon, "Before you guys get too far along into whatever you're doing, we need to determine if we're opening up the shop for business again--the food stores are getting low. Also, I've got Roy upstairs in the little girls room and he's looking about the same as before, what are we doing about him?"

ooc: Roy

From my character sheet (I keep notes on characters I feel important. The notes are more to remind me who they are than give a back story, but I try to include a date where we met them if you ever want to review the back story on someone).

--------------------------
"Roy" (Hook City)

Shanghai'd ranger that left under unhappy circumstances (2/04/10)
"Hmm, these are not my clothes, these are the clothes of a beggar." He introduces himself as Roy and describes the very set of clothing and equipment that Lemnas put on and left with. Having no choice, he puts on the soiled beggars garb and looks quite upset about it.
--------------------------

Short version, we found him trapped in a locker in a warehouse when looking for that mole that eats the brain parasites (we also found Cesar and Ransy in these lockers). He claimed a ranger who was taken captive by an unknown assailant (as were the others we rescued), and departed shortly after that angry with us because we didn't give him new clothes. Later we found him serving the mind flayer we hunted down, though that's likely because he was being manipulated but the brain worm the mind flayer gave him.

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14 of 14)
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 12:20:10 AM

More OOC on Ransy: We cured the brain worm that was eating his brain, but it left him catatonic, and now evidently brain damaged.

Zeoll has a conversation with the contractor. How much land is available near here? Is there room for a small garden? Say 40 ft by 40 ft, with a 10 ft diameter gazebo in the middle? That would suit Zeoll fine. How much would that cost, if it were available?

The liontaur, who spent the night caring for Roy while the rest of you were looking for Valla, introduces himself to Mara. "Hi! I am Zeoll, a barrd and a drruid, and a searrcher forr secrrets and lorre. I would love to hearr yourr storry." His accent is thick, and marks him as one who was not born in human lands.

At the news that Roy has awakened, Zeoll dashes upstairs to care for him. He washes his hands and face and tries to get him to take a little food and water.

OOC: Zeoll already looked at the curved daggers and came up dry, IIRC. Sorry.

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle]  d20+5=19 ;
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 12:28:51 AM

Ransy takes a look at Roy too, feeling, maybe, some measure fo responsibility for the man's condition. Of course, paladins tend to assume more responsibility for things then they should, but there you go.

The paladin is also a trained healer, and he looks over the man. At three ranks base +2 Wis, that's +5, or +7 with a kit. a 19! 21 with the kit. That might tell us something. Ransy reports his prognosis.

Roy -- DM Jim
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 2:30:55 AM

ooc: my version

Roy had been shanghai'd like Cesar and Ransy. When freed a prior captive, Lemnas, had taken Roy's clothes, and gear and left behind his beggar garb and quickly left, which Roy was forced to wear or go naked--no, he was not happy about someone stealing his clothes. When he was taken back to the shop he noted a traveling outfit that would fit him and it was 1gp. He offered to repay the group back after he could craft a bow or two, but the group wouldn't have it and would not give him the 1gp outfit, so he had to continue wearing the soiled beggar's garb. Fed up at the lack of hospitality, he said he would leave the next morning. A pair of former mind flayer cultists and their two children wanted to go with him and Roy knew a village down the coastline where they could start over, so they left, Roy still wearing beggar's clothing. Fast forward, the mindflayer must have caught up with him since he had a mindflayer larvae in his brain. The two cultists were nowhere to be seen, and the two children were fed to an unknown mind controlling monster against the groups will by certain members of the group. Back to the Madrigal and the shop...there you have it.

Wednesday July 21st, 2010 12:31:11 PM

Having paid Gil for a room of her own, Mara sits quietly in a chair in the showroom. She sets her guisarme across her lap and slowly sharpens the blade with a whetstone. "So what do you good folks do around here? Is it your goal to operate this shop?"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 1:10:21 PM

Our goal is to re-open the shop fairly soon, the revenue it generates should just be enough to support Sanji, Lilli, and Hemust. The plan is to use the shop as our base of operations; in a town like this it is important to have a safe place to store your gear and get a good nights sleep. Of course, one day I would like to see the shop become a success, but our immediate goal is to get the store open so we can pay for the daily upkeep.

Besides sleeping and eating here, we also use the shop to prepare before adventures.

The conversation reminds Beri of the events of the night before and he remembers one more chore he needs to take care of.

By the way, I'm not actually blond, that's part of a disguise I put on here before we went to the Madrigal. I forgot I went to bed looking like this, I'll remove it after breakfast.

ooc: What are the rules for the shop ownership of party members that have left? Am I correct in guessing that they still own their share, but would be willing to sell it to new members since they are no longer in the area?

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 1:54:06 PM

Beriothian pitches in some additional money for a lock upgrade (100 gp) and a stable in the back for his future use(100 gp).

After a hearty breakfast Beri takes a shower and restores his hair back to it's natural dark auburn color.

*100 gp is enough for a good lock on the front or average lock on both doors.

Watching money exchange hands for rooms and locks, Maikill pulls out his pouch.

"I thought we had money group save for this. What happened to that money, somebody steal it from us?"

if he doesn't get a good answer, he will pull out 250 gp.

"I want own room with very good lock. Use other 50 gp to help buy better lock for doors to shop."

ooc: should somebody (James) decide how much we each owe for the locks and divide it up? What happened to the group loot?

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells

Just under 1600 gp in group loot.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17

ooc:
technically it's just under 1400. You said you were putting in 800 to replace what was spent to not get fire bombed, the other 200 aren't I think you are just holding on to until you visit the catacombs (I am fine with it becoming group loot, just trying to keep the numbers straight)

Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Wednesday July 21st, 2010 10:11:58 PM

ooc: Since everyone is buying different things (stables, locks, etc). I would suggest we use group loot for the front and back locks and pay for our personal projects on our won. There are other things we may want to put that gp to, such as a strong healing wand so our healers don't use all there spells out of combat.

ooc: to clarify the group has 1599.375g.

99.375g was previously held by the group
500g were donated by me since I owed it to Xeron and he left
1000g was found on the ilithad

It has not been agreed upon to do anything with with the 1000g yet, but Bosk did suggest placing at least the 800g that we took out of the group loot to keep from getting fire bombed back in group loot.

Current discussions have been to buy a wand of CMW or CLW and we need to buy more rations. If we cannot identify the two wands we found then we may need to identify them.

[OOC: So confused! Dear friendly DM, I posted yesterday that Ransy was tending Roy and trying to get a prognosis. He had a heal check of 21 to do so. If Ransy were there when Roy had his accident, then what was the result of his diagnosis?]

Ransy wrinkles his nose and murmurs, "Ah, Great Domi! I must thank you for a paladin's lesson in humility, for surely it is a humble warrior who can best protect the lowly and the weak. Help me set aside my pride as I care for this sad victim of evil."

The paladin cleans up and takes care of Roy.

Say 40 ft by 40 ft, with a 10 ft diameter gazebo in the middle? That would suit Zeoll fine. How much would that cost, if it were available?" Then the contractor looks pointedly at Zeoll and asks what he wants? Zeoll just told him!]

Zeoll does a doubletake at Gil's question. "Um," says the liontaur. Then he speaks very. slowly. and. carefully. Unfortunately, this makes his accent worse. "I would like a forrrty foot by forrrty foot plot of land. Next to the building. Forrr a garrrden. With a ten-foot diameterrr gazebo. At the centerrr. And how about a fence? A sturrrdy five-foot high white fence. With a gate. Going all the way arrround it?"

"I'll plant berrry bushes and flowerrs and sweet grrass," Zeoll says. "Maybe some herrbs and a fig trree."

Thursday July 22nd, 2010 6:04:10 PM

Zeoll's smile is wide as he hears the new person speak in Tauric, the language closest to his own Wemic tongue. "Hail and well spoken, Miss Mara," he says, with no trace of his usual accent, since he is speaking a language that was designed to fit a mouth with teeth like his own. Although the word "Miss" does not signify a single woman as Zeoll says it, but more implies a greeting to a young hunter from another clan, little known to the speaker, but who has shown expertise and so earned respect.

He continues to Mara in Tauric, saying, "Fear not, for if his crafting is substandard, we shall make him rip it all down and do it again."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Thursday July 22nd, 2010 10:18:50 PM

I'm not familiar with that language, is that Tauric? I've always enjoyed studying foreign tongues, but never had an opportunity to pick up that one. Could you teach me a little when we have some spare time?

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Thursday July 22nd, 2010 11:20:39 PM

Mara smiles and continues in Tauric, "Thank you. The family farm is, or was, near the grasslands of the Lion-folk. It was beautiful country. Wide open and free. We traded vegetables and pottery for scouting reports of the area and the occasional deer carcass. I even had a beaded necklace my hus-." Her smile fades, "But enough of that, what kind of shop is this pack trying to open?"

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Friday July 23rd, 2010 11:41:04 AM

ooc: Mara, are you referencing the Sargrass Plains / Blood Pack?

Bosk replies to Mara, continuing in Tauric. We acquired this shop a couple weeks ago when the previous owner's brain was liberated from this skull and have since tracked down his murder and uncovered cult and conspiracy in the process. The shop is junk shop filled with odds and ends and some low quality weapons. We don't expect much in profit, but it provides us with a safe place to stay. Mudtown is not exactly known for it's hospitality.

Bosk will also ask Gil to reinforce the doors so that a charging half orc cannot crash through.

ooc: It sounds like there were no objections to group loot paying for the locks. Should we get 2 100g good locks, one for each door or 600g for amazing locks?

sorry for not posting as much as I normally do, but I'm in heated discussions with the PTB's about my other character and what ramifications it may have on that character and on the Wold house rules, so my mind has been elsewhere.

ooc: The Sargrass Plains are right outside Hook City, right? I saw this map. Am I mixing up geography? My origin was going to be a homestead on the plains. Is this problematic for the campaign setting?

Mara purses her lips and taps her check with her finger and she looks about the shop. She continues in Tauric, "You know, given the... shall we say, 'violent proclivities?' Of most of Mudtown's resident's, a commercial security company would certainly be in high demand. Things like retrieving stolen merchandise or defending against thugs and gangs. I bet there isn't a store in the whole district who wouldn't clamor for our services. Especially when we charge rock-bottom prices in the interest of community enrichment. Those who cannot afford our services could sign over a stake in their company in exchange in lieu of currency."

Maikill stares at the strange newcomer, not knowing quite what to think. She bested three men in combat while two of their group did nothing. Now she has moved in, paid to have a room built, and now has ideas of how to run a racketeering business.

"Did Lenny send you? Oh wait, Lenny is dead. Maybe his kin send you?"

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Friday July 23rd, 2010 7:41:52 PM

Mara holds up her hands, "Now, now! No one said anything about racketeering! For starters, we wouldn't force our services onto anyone. Second, we charge very modest rates in exchange. Third, we don't break people's legs if they owe us money. We provide security and retrieval, not 'give us money or we'll burn your store down.' See the difference?"

The Shop -- DM Jim
Saturday July 24th, 2010 3:41:34 AM

Cleaning up after Roy reminded Ransy of the early days when he was a novice tasked for such things. He did not miss those days of "paying his dues", but still had fond memories of the comraderie he shared with his fellow novices who also shared the less than desired chores. Studying Roy carefully, the paladin determined Roy was never going to get fully back to who he was without magical help. Maybe he might get a little better, maybe a little worse, it was really up to the gods to determine. However, what he did know was that Roy was going to require a fulltime nursemaid or he would suffer from lack of care.

Coming back down to the others and still a little sore from the cramp sleeping conditions (no overnight healing), Ransy hears Gil speaking loudly to Zeoll. Gil was a patient man and when Zeoll began speaking slowly and quite slurridly he knew what his affliction was. He had an aunt in Heranmar that was deaf and spoke similarly.

"I DON'T BUILD GARDENS, ONLY WOODEN STRUCTURES--BUILDINGS. I CAN BUILD YOUR GAZEBO AND FENCE OUT BACK, THERE IS ENOUGH ROOM THERE FOR IT. 200 GOLD." Gil put up his hands and signified the amount with two fingers and then making two zeroes in quick succession. Bosk sensed the man knew what he was talking about and Ransy had already checked out Gil and all his men to see if they were evil, and thankfully none appeared to be so.

Hook City and Geography -- DM Jim
Saturday July 24th, 2010 3:47:17 AM

ooc: Victor/Mara, the map on the webpage is old, Hook City moved completely last year. So you're probably far removed from your family, stuck here in Mudtown. The area south of Hook City where the Sargrass was, is now an endless ocean. and to the North, is now West, is the Gateway Downs. I've lost my link to the new map, but then again I think it's only for DM's. I'll try to draw something up for a better understanding of it later for you.

Zeoll agrees to the gazebo and fence, and says he'll do the garden.

Ransy is worried about Ray and not sure what to do with him. He is doomed without magic we don't have. Is this ghost idea a good one to help keep Roy alive? At the least, the paladin wants to know if those ghosts are evil.

[OOC: Me, I vote to figure out the tower next. But IC, we should spend at least a day looking for Valla, right?]

ooc: I gave Zeoll the money because I was not sure if we pay up front, when the work is complete, or half now half later. I also need to know if Bosk was able to determine what the wands do, so that I know if they need to be identified in town.

We should also make a quick stop at the inn and ask our friend the barkeeper if he's heard any rumors about Valla.

Gil, healing and identify -- DM Jim
Monday July 26th, 2010 10:59:31 PM

"GREAT, THANK YOU MR. TAUR, SIR!" Gil says to Zeoll, whom he thinks is deaf. "I'll have all the rooms done today, and the gazebo and fence tomorrow." Then once more to Zeoll, "TOMORROW GAZEBO AND FENCE WILL BE DONE, OKAY?" Nodding his head for agreement and sure he receives it, he instructs his men to get to work and they immediately snap to it.

The noise is constant, but the progress is swift.

Bosk, Maikill and beri head off for Hook City proper since there are no healers here in Mudtown that can take care of Roy's condition or Maikill's poison. Once inside thanks to their Writ of Passage, the trio find a healer's office on the mainstreet. His prices seem fair compared to the rest, and he tells the trio that he can get rid of Maikill's affliction for 280gp. For Roy, based upon what you've told him, it would be 660gp.

Identification at the Catacombs is a standard 110gp per item.

Zeoll searches in vain somewhere in the shop for a moments peace, but can find none--until he finds the root cellar. With a lantern lit nearby, Zeoll finds the cellar to be devoid of much of anything except a few empty crates and some packing straw. It is a little musty with no air circulating through the area, but it's a good 40'x40' space directly under the shop and it's foundation seems strong. With a little work, this place could be turned into a library, lab or other workspace where peace and quiet would be required.

Also, if Maikill and Beri wish to check out the tower then Bosk will insist on taking an hour to pray to Gargul first.

Just a though about the tower, perhaps we could start by appeasing the ghosts. Maybe we could bring them some fresh tea and leave it just inside the door? If nothing else, perhaps they will be less agressive if we ever do have to face them.

Zeoll suggests just spending some time looking for Valla in Mudtown. "I can see what news I can dig up. I'm not half bad at that."

Ransy offers to stay with Roy. Someone has to watch him.

Thursday July 29th, 2010 5:16:03 PM

ooc: yes we want to bypass the catacombs, we will give you the money from group loot, tell us about the wands.

Maikill walks away from the healer, not sure about his words "what goes around comes around". He knows he has killed many by his axe, and he knows someday he will probably be killed the same way. Of course what goes around comes around, why did he bother to say something so obvious? He mulls over the words for a long time while Bosk finds a place to pray.

He looks over at Beri as he waits "I think we should wait for Bosk then go back to shop. I not go into tower, not now anyway. If Valla in Hook City then he okay, but I don't know how he get here without papers. If he anywhere, he in Mudtown."

Maikill will try to hustle the other two back to the shop as soon as possible.

Identify -- DM Jim
Thursday July 29th, 2010 6:13:50 PM

With a quick stop to the Catacombs and pay 110gp for each wand, the trio of Bosk, Maikill and Beri learn that one is a Wand of Fireballs (CL5) with 5 charges left, and the other is a Wand of Contingency, also with 5 charges left.

Looking for a place to pray inside Hook City is scarce and the only places that can be found is an inn with rooms for rent--by the day only, which would cost 100gp. (stay for 100gp, or go back to the shop, let me know).

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)
Thursday July 29th, 2010 6:37:35 PM

Contingency, the 6th level spell? Whoa! Normally wands are limited to 4th level spells! Really? How much did the catacombs say it was worth?

Later ... my calculations put a 5 charge wand like this at a value of just under 5,000 gp, not counting any factor for extreme rarity.

Yeah, it's basically a fate item because the mindflayer used Contingency spells alot, but wasn't a spellcaster. It can be sold locally for 5000gp to the right buyer. DM Jim

Sept 1 Update: This post was changed to Not Private to make the details about the wand more clear.

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)  d4+1=5 ; d20+6=26 ;
Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:30:04 PM

Zeoll has spent 1d4+1 hours gathering info on the whereabouts of Valla. The 1d4+1 is a 5, ugh. His check at +6 is a 26! Nat 20! No regrets on that 5 hours now! If there's a clue to be had, our liontaur has sniffed it out!

When Zeoll hears what the wands are, he is surprised. "Wowsy, as the liontaurr cubbies say. That's a sweet wand, a Wand of Contingency. I've been arround the block a time orr two, hearrd some tales, and that's a special one. Most wand makerrs couldn't make one of those if they trried!"

He thinks for a minute. "I bet the Catacombs would only give you -- what the humans call 'book value.' For a thing as rrarre as this, I bet we could get morre frrom a local buyerr, especially in such a magical city. The rright collectorr would pay thrrough the nose!"

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle]
Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:34:25 PM

Ransy has been taking care of Roy. While he does so he invites Mara to join him and tell her tale. He mentions his own background. You get the idea he is a local boy who has his heart in the right place and managed to put some good luck to clever use, getting apprenticed to a noble paladin.

When he hears about the special wand, he says, "But isn't it powerful? Maybe we should save it for Good use?"

But when he hears how much it will cost to heal Roy, he adds, "Then again, we could use the gold to get Roy fixed up. We owe him that much."

Mara leans her guisarme against the corner of the room and takes a seat beside the jovial adventurers. She smiles her scar-crooked smile. "My story? Well, darling, there isn't much too it. After the lands shifted, our prairie home was flung from within a day's journey of Hook City to deep in the Sargrass Plains. They never tell you that little tidbit when they are advertising for colonists, if you were wondering. Took a few weeks to figure out what had happened, and by then it was too late to do anything but learn to live with it. We spent many years near the lion-folk, growing food on our little plot of land and raising our family. It was simple and happy, which it usually the way it goes." Mara's smile drops a fraction, "Nothing lasts, though. After I left, I put the militia training of my youth to work. I've been working as a caravan guard and would-be mercenary for the past three years. My last job ended here, in Mudtown. It was too late in the evening to find an inn when my last employer discharged me, so I just snoozed near the street. When I woke up, I discovered some rude rapscallions trying to steal an honest man's horse. That is what finds me here now."

The Shop -- DM Jim
Friday July 30th, 2010 3:04:50 PM

With Bosk, Maikill's and Beri's return to the shop and subsequent sharing of information of the wands, Zeoll also returns from his long inquiry after Valla--and the liontaur is positive of one thing, Valla is not in Mudtown. If anyone had seen a scarfaced elf in Mudtown, Zeoll would have surely found out, but no one had.

Construction is still going on outside and after Bosk learns of the rather quiet root cellar, he adjourns there for a while to pray in peace.

Sanji, ignored by those present, remarks to herself that most here are from Mudtown, and asks Mara what Heranmar was like--or if she had ever been inside it's city walls, because the only caravan's that travelled to and from Hook City were from Heranmar, after that they could travel all over the coast or deep into the continent.

Roy sleeps peaceably, being taken care of well by both Ransy and Cesar.

thinking about what to do next, he adds:

Sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet and my head's a bit fuzzy. Lilly was that moody halfling that was in Zamnoodle's gang with you. I'm trying to find her and her brothers to see if they've heard any rumors of Valla. Our efforts to find out what happened to him have been nothing but a string of failures so far and I can't seem to stop thinking about what kind of danger he may be in, and how we are going to find him.... sorry, I don't mean to be so depressing.
Beriothian inhales the sweet aroma wafting up from his cup, and takes a long, much needed sip of the strong brew.
Anyway, how are the two of you's wedding plans coming along? I know things got delayed when Grendel ended up not returning with us.

"You go look at lockers? Not good leave people in small locker, we go look now?"

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle]

"Wait, what are in the lockers? Why are they so important?" says Ransy. "We need to sell the wand, maybe both, and use the money to heal Roy. That's the right thing to do. Then we can do the lockers, I promise."

Zeoll agrees.

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17

"What are in the lockers? You were! We rescued you and Cesar, and Roy. Other people probably in lockers, but you want to leave them there and go shopping? Beside, use your own money to heal Roy."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:34:35 PM

Odds are the lock has been changed by now, and if we were to break into the lockers again it is incredibly likely that we will be fire bombed, putting Sanji, Jillian, and Hemust in danger. That's not to say that we should try to rescue anyone else that's been kidnapped, but it may be a better approach to figure out who is behind the kidnappings and go after them first. There can't be that many people in Mudtown that can afford such an expensive storage facility.

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:38:33 PM

"You smart, remember stuff. I forgot they say they firebomb us. Maybe we find them, or maybe we trick them and get them when they come firebomb. I not know. You think good, you decide."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:44:44 PM

I think you had the right idea though. The kidnappings need to be stopped and any victims rescued. And since Valla vanished without a trace, there is a decent chance that he suffered the same fate as the other kidnapped citizens. Since we were unable to locate Valla I say we take the path that is most likely to lead to him and start hunting down those kidnappers.

A foul odor wafts over toward Beri, overpowering the subtle aromas of his coffee.
... better yet, first thing we do is get rid of the decomposing head Bosk is carrying around, and THEN we hunt down the kidnappers.

Sanji -- DM Jim
Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:46:28 PM

"Wait, it was the warehouse owner that said he would firebomb us, not the kidnappers, they don't know it was us. So if you guys waylay the kidnappers outside the warehouse, well, what recourse would the warehouse owner have? I mean, the only way they knew it was us was because the key that Black Whatshisface had purchased to store the mole had been left behind, right?"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Sunday August 1st, 2010 11:27:30 PM

I had been assuming the Roy squealed on us, but it may have been that stubborn key. That's a good idea Sanji. It sounded like the ware house owners didn't care how we got a key, they were only upset about lockers we opened that we had no key for. Is everyone up for a stake out?

Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21

Taking the head along with him, Bosk and others walk down to the inn where they first talked to the owner about the 5000gp reward. The innkeeper is shocked at first at the sight of the tenacled head, but says rather apologetically, "I'm sorry fella's, but it's been over a week since the last braineater attack. Do you have any witnesses other than those in your group that this is indeed the braineater?"

Mara pipes up from the back of the group, "Not to question your credibility, barkeep, but how often do you see brain-eaters in these parts? Can you really argue that this isn't the brain-eater in question if you haven't seen or heard of others? Also, if the attacks stopped last week, wouldn't that mean that they stopped just after this group of adventurers set out to do that very thing? Unless you can give us proof of," she numbers on her fingers, "one, the existence of other brain-eaters and, two, brain-eater attacks that occured after you commissioned this party, then I am afraid you have no grounding to refuse payment."

The Reward -- DM Jim
Monday August 2nd, 2010 2:43:00 PM

The innkeeper looks at the woman like she's daft, "You do realize in these circumstances, it's YOU that have to prove the validity of your case, not I who has to disprove it. If this is indeed the Braineater that the reward is for, then why did you wait a week to bring it forth? Sorry, unless you have independent witnesses to the fact, like someone that was attacked and someone who witnessed it, then yes, I will have to refuse payment."

Posting Guidelines -- DM Jim
Monday August 2nd, 2010 3:36:30 PM

Some of you may have read that per posting guidelines that each character is to post only once each day. I do NOT run my game that way. Play by Post is so slow that it already takes months to get through one day, why would I want to extend that to 1 game day per real year. Not only does it completely slow down the game, but it stifles roleplay. However, if you guys would like to limit our game to only 1 post per character a day, let me know and we can all get on the slow boat to China :)

Not a problem at all... I was just reminded of posting only once in another game, and well, I don't subscribe to that rule because of the reasons I stated. So if people want to post more, I encourage it, please participate as much as you want! DM Jim

Holding the head up a bit higher he continues. I understand you need to verify the deed, but my men will not be happy if we are cheated, especially after we lost one of our wizards going after this thing...and it would be a shame if we refused to help if his kin come to town looking for him not to mention potential larva he may have laid.

I just didn't want anyone listening in on our conversation to get any funny ideas about delaying payment should they hire us. We'll come back after Roy is healed. Wednesday August 4th, 2010 6:56:54 AM

Ransy looks around at Zeoll's words. He sighs. "If Valla were here, he could use these items. Having five fireballs to throw would be a very useful thing. It's probably not even worth very much, with so few charges left."

"Maybe we should keep the wand of fireballs in case we gain a mage?"

Due to an unfortunate situation, DM Jim will not be posting here for a short time. It is a private matter. Please do not ask about it.

I am personally taking over as DM for now.

Jim, check your email.

ADM James, as well as any others of you that have the time, please email me a summary of what is going on to the best of your ability. I'll make my first post late tonight.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Wednesday August 4th, 2010 10:52:42 AM

Beriothian pulls out his wand and gives it a wave.
I'm actually pretty skilled at using wands, even if they are designed for a sorcerer or wizard. But s much as I would like to have that wand in my bag of tricks, I have a feeling I can't afford such a nice tool.
Beri returns his wand to his pocket.

One Imbicile's Treasure... [DM Jerry]
Thursday August 5th, 2010 1:15:12 AM

That night in Mudtown, it rains. Lots. Continually.

Rob whimpers a bit. [I assume he's with ya. Let me know if he's not.

During the night, there is a strange occurrence. Rob gets up and begins--finding things. This is the most energetic he has been.

He begins making a pile of....stuff. Rocks, an old shield, ruined pairs of boots, some wire, a small pile of charcoal, which he transports 2 small pieces at a time.

By morning, he has quite the pile sitting there. He then curls up next to it and finally sleeps peacefully.

The next morning, if one could tell that it is indeed morning, is still dark and rainy. Thunder crashes and lightning flashes. The smell of ozone mixed with the smell of the foul rain is still an improvement, though, to the norm.

Mudtown goes about its business, though. A little rain just expands the borders of Mudtown. Nothing to stay indoors about.

In the distance, a figure is gathering a bit of a crowd.

"Repent! For the falling of the hooks is at hand!"

------------

Email coming folks.

OOC. I believe you meant Roy... or I missed who Rob is =P Please confirm before I post.

OOC Edit by Cayzle: Yup, Jerry means Roy.

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)
Thursday August 5th, 2010 7:40:27 AM

OOC: Yup, Roy and the party are spending the nights at the shop.

Zeoll is eager to sell the loot, get Roy to the healer, and then get to the bar to collect the reward for the mind flayer.

"It looks like Rroy is getting betterr, the liontaur bard/druid says in his distinctive accent, "but he still looks like he needs a good healing."

[OOC to my fellow players -- aside from the two wands, what was the other loot we got, if any? Also, did we get a bonus pack of potions from Jerry, and did we ever divide them or figure out who is carrying them? Sorry, my brain is bad today.]

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Thursday August 5th, 2010 10:15:33 AM

Beriothian finishes up his nightly trance and heads to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He inhales the wonderful aroma and lets it block out the natural smells of Mudtown. His drink is interrupted my the ravings of a lunatic off in the distance, though Beri reminds himself that in the past such mad men have been known to have the power necessary to bring about such destruction.

ooc: potions are in group look, carried by Bosk. For the mind flayer we also found a bag of holding. We also found a composite longbow and a quiver with 18 arrows on Roy. FYI for Jerry, our group loot in on Bosk's character sheet.

Also, since it is a new day does that mean that construction on the additional rooms for the shop has been completed ?

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Thursday August 5th, 2010 11:02:11 AM

Maikill walks over and examines Roy's pile, he then walks around the shop and come back to the pile. He drops a dented cup and a bent spoon onto the pile.

"I think he okay now."

Maikill grabs a cup of coffee and says "I go out, see what going on."

He wanders outside and goes to listen at a distance to what the man has to say. Repenting has been mentioned to him before, maybe it is time? Thinking back over the last couple of days, he decides it definitely is time to repent.

Mara goes with Maikill to investigate the street preacher.

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Thursday August 5th, 2010 4:50:55 PM

Ransy thinks that after we get healing for Roy, we should stake out the warehouse, to get at the kidnappers.

"Perhaps Valla has been kidnapped as well by those kidnappers. If there really are vampires in Mudtown, they need blood or bodies every day, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Valla in one of those lockers too.
Let's turn our attention to that warehouse; we'll probably find something interesting there.
"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Thursday August 5th, 2010 8:33:22 PM

ooc: Jerry, do you have a strict or lenient policy on posting once a day when we are not in combat?

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells  d20=15 ;
Thursday August 5th, 2010 10:28:07 PM

ooc: I was wrong earlier, we have two helms of disguise. I forgot that we found one on on the mind flayer. Should we sell it or keep it?

Bosk goes into the kitchen and fries up some bacon and eggs for breakfast and sets it out on the table for everyone.

When everyone sits down the horned cleric asks about the days plans. I think the first thing we should do is get Roy cleaned up, give him a clean set of cloths, and take him to the healers. Zeoll, could come with me? You have a way with words and are most likely to be able to get Roy to help us collect the reward.

If you guys want, half of us can watch the ware house and half can come with me, and we can meet back here for lunch and then collect our reward.

Cooking = 15

Ransy is glad to come with Zeoll and Bosk to get Roy healed.

What Does It Mean? [DM Jerry]
Friday August 6th, 2010 1:37:19 AM

"I have been given a sign!!!"

The preacher, tall for a gnome, stands precariously balanced on several actual soap boxes. Each box also has "repent" written upon it.

"Chaos is angered! They are angry with the movement of the lands, because beings of law, long since bound, are freed. The balance between the two is restored.

"Law is furious! Buried, almost forgotten, they are now freed! What does this mean? What does this mean?"

He points at Mara!

"You know! What does it mean!!!"

Everyone in the crowd turns to look at Mara to see what she will say.

-------------

Meanwhile, Roy continues to sleep, a slight smile on his face.

-------------

A construction worker comes over to Beriothian and drops the keys in his hand. He nods, gestures at the finished shop and moves over with the others to watch the preacher.

--------------

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Friday August 6th, 2010 9:25:29 AM

(Before he went to sleep last night, Ransy used his 6hp healing on himself)

If nobody else will, Ransy will pay for new clothes for Roy. He thinks an artisan's outfit (1gp) and a leather armor (10 gp) will do nicely for Roy.
Then Ransy will carry Roy and follow Zeoll and Bosk to the healer.

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Friday August 6th, 2010 10:12:58 AM

Maikill stands with a confused look on his face and stares at Mara. Just yesterday she joined up with them, and now he finds out that she has insight into the future.

Quietly he says to Mara:

"I just thought it meant 'repent'. What it really mean?"

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)  d20+13=31
Friday August 6th, 2010 4:52:39 PM

As Zeoll walks out of the shop with Ransy and Bosk, carrying or supporting Roy as they take him to the healer, he stops to listen for a moment to listen to the street preacher. He listens to what Mara might say.

Then Zeoll has a bit of a say himself. He calls out to the gnome, "How do you know these things, good sirr? And of what should we be rrepenting?"

He seeks to engage the gnome and draw him out. Diplomacy 31!

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Friday August 6th, 2010 8:28:16 PM

Beriothian hands keys to the party members still in the shop, then heads out with the rest of the group, stopping to listen to the man on the soap boxes.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Friday August 6th, 2010 8:51:13 PM

Caught off guard when Zeoll calls the gnome over, Bosk shifts Roy slightly so that the bard can focus on the sap box preacher. As he observes the two he makes a note to himself that the group should have the curved daggers (fate items) examined at the WLA to see if they can learn anything about them.

(Jim did not state if we went to the WLA healer before, but I am a member and have access to the discounted healing and to their bards.)

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Friday August 6th, 2010 10:30:55 PM

Mara smiles her scar-crooked smile. "It means Law has been restored to its proper place. Chaos has been humbled by the resurgence of its brother and seeks to reclaim its position of might. But those who watch and listen will not allow this to happen. Law will supplant. Law will overthrow. Law will triumph." Her smiles fades, "Or perhaps you are a damn fool that bothers good people with his rants. Time will tell."

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Monday August 9th, 2010 4:41:08 PM

Ransy whispers to Zeoll: "we don't need flimsy prophets to restore law here; we just need some courageous men, who'll enlist as lawkeeping officers; and some money to pay them their wages, of course."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Monday August 9th, 2010 9:01:47 PM

Beriothian turns to and whispers to the paladin, hoping his knowledge of the law can shed a light on what he's hearing.
So, Chaos is upset that law was restored in a most chaotic fashion, and Law is upset because things are finally balanced? And in the midst of all this some prisoners, who were apparently lawful, were freed? And somehow the squalid and destitute populace of Mudtown repenting for the actions of the wealthy inside Hook City will appease their anger?

Law must Win! [DM Jerry]
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 12:09:49 AM

The preacher nods at Mara. "Exactly. But now, chaos is spurned. It has lost. It wants its power back. Every act of chaos strengthes it. So act by the laws of your heart. Of the government. No matter how ignorant the law or lawgiver!"

His eyes meet Beriothian. He mouths "Be careful." Then turns back to the crowd with a flourish. Perhaps this preacher has some levels in bard. He is very charismatic.

"Be lawful! Even now, Chaos attacks! It destroys! It seeks its revenge! Woe! Woe! Woe!"

Then with a flourish, and some smoke, he is gone!

-----------

Meanwhile, the sleeping Roy in his new clothes is carried to the healer by Ransy. The healer greets Zeoll and Ransy.

"Welcome."

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 10:27:29 AM

Ransy answers Beri aloud: "I think that preacher doesn't really understand anything about law. The idea that Mudtown should repent for the sins of Hook City is really repulsive. Law states that the guilty should suffer for their own sins, not the innocents living nearby. I think it is some kind of religious belief you're referring to, the weak suffering for the strong, etcetera. But that has got nothing to do with the law. In fact, I would strongly oppose anyone who'd suggest that the weak should suffer for the strong. The law is meant to protect the weak from the sinfulness of the strong, i.e. to protect the innocents in Mudtown from whatever is making their lives miserable. Now, the choice is yours: do you want to protect the innocents or not?

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 2:52:24 PM

Mara shrugs her shoulders, "But are they innocent, or merely powerless? We find the means and courage to express our true selves when our personal power protects up from the retribution of others. Perhaps the powerful are simply those who are openly honest in their intentions. I doubt the urchins and waifs of Mudtown would be more benevolent than those who oppress them if their roles were reversed. But that is neither here nor now. I am heading back to wait for the others to return from the healer."

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 3:42:26 PM

Maikill shakes his head.

"I no understand any of this. Too much talk of law, like law solve all problem. People need learn solve own problem."

growling then comes from his stomach

"I go with Mara, have breakfast. Solve that problem anyway."

Maikill goes back to the store and awaits the return of Ransy and Zeoll.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17  d20+3=8 ;
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 8:51:57 PM

Unless any of the citizens of Mudtown have the power to move gigantic cities across the globe but are opting for squalor I think it's safe to say they are at least innocent of this particular incident.
*Poof*
Huh, I wonder where that guy vanished to so fast.

Having no real tracking ability Beriothian gives a halfhearted glance around the mud surrounding for any footprints of the eccentric preacher before heading back to the shop for another cup of coffee.

Survival (track) = d20+3=8 ;

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 10:30:18 PM

Bosk looks at Ransy, slightly puzzled at his comment. What are the sins of Hook City? It is not a sin to be wealthy, and they are not profiting off of the citizens of Mud town or taking advantage of them. Unless I miss my guess, the original citizens probably came to try to profit from Hook City by offering protection, services, begging or in some cases stealing. It is for each man to decide what he can afford and should do for others.

The cleric drops the conversation, not trying to be preachy and, remembering how much gold he has put aside, decides he doesn't want to pass judgement on the folks of Hook City.

When they arrive at the healer's Bosk hands over the money to heal Roy and stand back to let Zeoll do the talking.

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)  d20+13=30 ;
Tuesday August 10th, 2010 11:27:07 PM

Zeoll approaches the healer. "Hello, good tenderr of hurrts. I underrstand that you may be able to heal this injurred man. His brrains werre infested with the worrms of the illithid, and although they werre laterr rremoved by a brrain mole, he has been left as you see him now, berreft of his senses, and behaving strrangely."

Zeoll describes Roy's recent strange behavior.

"Can you look at him, and please tell us if you can help him?"

Diplomacy 30.

Obviously Mad [DM Jerry]
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 12:28:45 AM

The crowd seems to have the same sentiments as our heroes. The preacher has gone too far. He was entertaining for a moment, but obviously mad. And he wouldn't even stick around to face his detractors!

The crowd disperses, glad in the rain for something to fuss about.

----------

Meanwhile, the healer takes Roy in his lap. "Poor lad. There's something special in this one. More than meets the eye. The gypsy blood in me can feel it."

Then after a moment of reflection, he turns to Zeoll and says, "I will try."

He puts one hand on Roy's heart and one on his head. He begins to hum softly. Some old hymn long forgotten.

Roy awakens with a scream, evidently still in the moment of his injury. He panics attacking the healer clawing at him.

"nooooooOOOOOOOOWWWWW!"

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)  d20+5=8 ; d20+5=9 ; d20+5=14 ;
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 7:06:54 AM

Zeoll jumps on Roy to stop him from hurting the healer or himself. Grapple check 8, alas, is nothing close to success! "Rransy! Help!" he calls.

If we are not in combat rounds, Zeoll will keep trying, rolling a 9 and a 14. The 14 might do it.

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35  d20+6=22 ;
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 7:24:58 AM

Ransy tries to grapple Roy as well, calling "stop, Roy, he's helping you; stop clawing"
grapple = 22.

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)  d20=17 ;

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 12:31:36 PM

Maikill looks around wondering where Mara went. He speaks to those around him at the store.

"You see Mara, she say she come back with me but I not see her? Oh well, more food for us. Not sure about that woman, she a girl but bested three men while Cesar and Ransy did nothing. I guess it good she on our side, I hope so anyway."

Maikills settles down to eat a breakfast of whatever is readily available. Food is food afterall.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells  d20+3=7 ;
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 8:06:17 PM

Bosk does his best to help the healer, but with three others in front of him he is unable to be of much assistance.

Roy! It's ok! We are helping you! He saved you! You are better now!

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Wednesday August 11th, 2010 8:07:48 PM

Beriothian walks in from the streets and pours himself a second cup of coffee, followed by a plate of bacon and eggs. Taking his breakfast with him he sits at the table next to Maikill. Noticing that nobody else is currently eating with them Beri decides to talk to him in Orcish.

I think Mara go with Bosk to healer. They want to help Roy. Maybe think that healer needs help. Even if saved, Roy probably still mean. He let kids go into dangerous tunnel. No mind flayer alive to make him do that. He chose evil. Still, glad Roy leaving us soon. Maybe we meet him again, make him pay for crimes. Maybe Roy turn good. I doubt will happen, but Roy brain eaten pretty bad. Eaten brain make anybody do bad things.

Oh, I was given keys to shop before we go hear crazy man. I have your key here.

Beri hand Maikill his key before continuing with his breakfast.

ooc: Welcome aboard Buzz!

I had a nightmare? [DM Jerry]
Thursday August 12th, 2010 1:55:21 AM

With time Roy calms down, sweating.

He looks up questioningly at those helping him.

"I had a nightmare? Why do you need a healer for a nightmare?"

Shaking, he folds into the fetal position, his ordeal too much to bear.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Thursday August 12th, 2010 1:13:56 PM

Bosk places a hand on the man's shoulder. It was a nightmare of the mindflayer's making. You are not responsible for what happened.

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Thursday August 12th, 2010 4:44:23 PM

Ransy tries to comfort Roy: I know this has been a nightmare to you. So it has been for all of us. But we came through, and we will see you through too. Seriously. I don't have hard feelings toward you, I just want you to be alright. You've been hit by evil at its worst. It has been controlling your actions, we know. But now it's gone. Please talk to us. You can become a good ranger again.

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Thursday August 12th, 2010 7:09:01 PM

Mara smiles her scar-crooked smile and reaches out to gently stroke Roy's hair in a comforting, motherly sort of way. "Now, now, don't you fret. Your friends are here, don't you see them? They are here and there is nothing to be afraid of. Shhh."

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)
Thursday August 12th, 2010 7:58:53 PM

Zeoll, being large and just having tried to grapple Roy, doubts that he would be very comforting to the human. Instead, he thanks the healer, and asks how much the party owes him.

By the way, is this fellow a cleric? Or what? Of what god or power? How about a name?

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Thursday August 12th, 2010 8:44:52 PM

ooc: Did we ever cast detect evil on Roy to make sure he really is good and not another wanna'be cultist?

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14)
Thursday August 12th, 2010 8:52:01 PM

OOC: Don't look at me! I'm no paladin! :-)

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17
Thursday August 12th, 2010 11:34:42 PM

Maikill finishes his breakfast and decides to do some work on his room. He finds an old crate and puts a pitcher of water on it and then finds some pallets to make a bed. Spreading a bit of straw on it, he tosses an old blanket on top. Smiling he looks around.

This is the best place I have ever had, I finally made it mother.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Thursday August 12th, 2010 11:48:51 PM

After Maikill leaves the table Beri talks to Sanji.
Looks like construction is all finished. Now that we aren't sprawled across the shops floor it looks like we are about ready to open the shop again. Are you looking forward to running a business?

Names [DM Jerry]
Friday August 13th, 2010 12:36:07 AM

The healer says, "I have not been named. I am just The Healer. Just as you are Zeoll and have journeyed farther than anyone here could possibly know.

"I came because The Preacher did. He preaches. I heal. Which I have done. Things are balanced once again."

He stands and stretches. "Roy will not heal completely overnight, Bosk. Magic can't sort through horror. It must find its own way. And no he is not evil. He is Roy. But he does have a gift, though he knows it not.

"Until he finds his destiny, keep an eye on him from time to time. He may show the way."

Meanwhile, Roy, for the first time, smiles. Then looks up at Mara and takes her hand.

"T-thanks." He says.

Then The Healer leaves the tent and walks away.

-------

Back at the store, Maikill and Beriothian relax and enjoy one of the best joys in the world. Enjoying a moment of peace, before a beginning.

----
OOC: Can you tell I've been reading Robert E. Howard?

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35
Friday August 13th, 2010 10:17:19 AM

Ransy takes Roy's smile to be a good sign. He has checked Roy before he was infected with the worm, and then Roy wasn't evil. Should have checked Yoseph then too! People are not always as innocent as they seem, he thinks. With this in mind, he starts detects evil and checks on the healer who's walking away.

AFter that, Ransy says: "What a good fortune! That healer didn't even charge us for healing Roy! But I think we should leave some kind of reward, as a sign of our gratitude. What do you think, Bosk?

Ransy is also surprised that Roy should take Mara's hand, a complete stranger, and not listen to Ransy's own words, while he was a companion in misfortune (both incarcerated in a locker in the warehouse).
he's probably still suffering from confusion ..

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36)
Friday August 13th, 2010 12:42:35 PM

Mara smiles at Roy's acceptance. She shoulders his weight and helps him walk back to the store.
