I think we should get Maikill a large hammer so next time they can just smash the door open...
Beriothian starts examining the smaller statues for clues to how to open the door, starting with the one he we standing by when shooting at the MF.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells

Does it look like all three buttons have been equally pressed? Perhaps only one needs to be pressed and the rest are trapped. Bosk will check to see if one button is more worn or has less dust on it.

Bosk looks at the three depressions and ascertains that each has been pressed once before, but is uncertain of what order, except that the middle depression seems to be a little cleaner.

Total wealth awarded to date -- DM Jim
Monday June 21st, 2010 1:30:23 AM

ooc: James has his fair share of stuff to do, so if anyone could tell me how much I've awarded the group in a gold piece amount, I'd appreciate it--I just want to make sure my number is correct. This makes sure that the minimum wealth level per character is at least satisfied. You won't be docked gold, but I can increase it to make sure you're getting at least the minimum and more. This would only include the awards I have given you, not what you've spent, just the raw amount I've awarded the group broken down per person.

Sale value please, thanks! DM Jim

The Main Temple -- DM Jim
Monday June 21st, 2010 1:36:02 PM

The smell of burned flesh slowly ebbs away as the group ponders what to do next. Most have been drawn to silence--perhaps it is the temple itself, it's oppressive nature slowly working it's way into the thoughts and feelings of the group. All around them are the busts of long forgotten Illithid, their almond shaped eyes staring at you as if they could see right through you. The massive bas-relief on the altar wall with it's many tenacled god looms over the group as some stand in the darkness, while others have just returned from the humid, and musty main hall of the temple. No sounds but the labored breathing of the prisoners and the constant fall of water from outside permeate the great hall.

The dark stairway -- DM Jim
Monday June 21st, 2010 5:27:38 PM

Deciding to take the lead, Ransy presses the buttons and there is a trembling in the ground. Within a few seconds, a large part of the wall moves back and then to the side to reveal a long set of stone stairs that descend down into abject darkness. The stale air of a thousand rotting dead bodies then issues forth from the dark stairway, filling the great hall with the stench of death and decay. No sounds, no movement is forthcoming, just darkness and decay.

Just so everyone understands, Zeoll did find the magic teleport circle back in the other room, but it's underwater where you guys first appeared. DM Jim

Can you tell us how to get out of here? I'm sure you must have tried to figure out how to escape, and I know you don't want that worm taking control of your body. We believe we can help you and possibly the children, and then you can be on your way. None of us could kill you as long as there is chance we could save you, and we will do everything in our power to keep you alive until you are cured or the worm takes over and we have no other choice. Please help us and let us help you before it is too late.

Zeoll points our the way back, but proposes going forward to fully explore the place.

"Come on, what kind of adventurrerr backs down frrom explorring things?"

Ransy, AC 21/12/20 Hp 25/35
Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 4:48:54 AM

Ransy says to Cesar: I don't think carrying two children downstairs is wise at this moment. Suppose we get a surprise attack? You would drop the children on the stairs and break their skulls? No, I can't allow that. Please lay them down carefully and explore the cellar first. Afterwards, if there is a way out downstairs, we get the children. If you're afraid they'll wake up, just bind their hands on their backs.

Ransy lights his lamp, removes his shield (he can't carry three things: lamp, shield and sword; if possible he'll bind the shield on his back), waits for the others to join him and then, with his sword drawn, he slowly descends the stairs, saying to Beri: "please, feel free to look for traps here"

Ransy, AC 21/12/20 Hp 25/35
Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 10:34:30 AM

I don't think we should stay here long enough to construct stretchers. This is not exactly what one would call a safe place; it's evil, thoroughly evil. Let's try to find any other victims which may be around here and then take the swiftest way out.

The dark stairway -- DM Jim
Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 2:43:38 PM

The group decides to descend into the darkness, with Ransy second in line with his lantern keeping the dark at bay. With Beri in front and searching for traps, the going is slow. At first when the group entered, the walls were slightly damp with moisture, the common musty smell replaced completely by the stench of rotting corpses somewhere far below. Also, the passageway down the steps were "man-made" with slate and granite lining the walls and steps. However, about 100' down, the slate walls abruptly end in rough hewn earth and stone. The granite steps continue down into the dark for another 500' until the group comes to an opening. The air is oppressive, heavy with the smell of corpses and a languid warmth that pricks at the flesh. Shining his light past the opening, Ransy and the others see that the stairs have lead all this way to a large naturally formed cavern about 400' in diameter. The stairs continue down to the floor of the cavern some 50' below. In the center of the cavern is a large pit, a sinkhole if you will, of about 100' in diameter. Eight continual flame braziers equally spaced about the perimeter of the sinkhole mark it's edge.

The group see's no other movement in the cavern or anything else unusual.

Cesar's arms grow weary after carrying both children so far--and they have made no sign of awakening. Poor Roy was left behind to fend for himself and although he is disabled and unable to escape, hopefully the rats won't make a meal of him.

Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21

Cesar eases the children on the floor as gently as possible, while looking around the cavern.

Ransy whispers as he comes down to stand beside Cesar: I don't think so; religion often involves some kind of ritual cleansing. Sometimes it is done in a cistern with water; in evil religions, it might be done in a large fire pit ... burning all the good sides away, because the evil ones consider the good to be rubbish... These braziers are obviously there to light the 'cleansing' fire, or as we would say, the 'defiling' fire ...

Meanwhile Ransy quickly picks up any weapons or other objects dropped by the panicked comrades (but not those which lie close to the big hole) and one of the children too. He then starts to retreat back up on the stairs.
He thinks: if the mindflayer considered this abomination to be a god, it's probably a bit out of our league.

Run faster was all Zeoll and Beri could think when the voice came to them again, not heeding it's call to feed it the helpless children under the protection of the group. However, those nearest the pit felt compelled to do otherwise--in fact, they were compelled to murder. Stepping forth, Bosk lets the little girl roll out of his hands into the pit, her body consumed by the darkness. At the same time, Maikill wrests the little boy from Ransy's grip as if it were a ragdoll--much to Ransy's protest, then flings the body into the black.

There is no sound.

There is no voice.

The fog lifts from the minds of the group nearest the pit and they come to realize what has happened, much to their sorrow.

The cleric prepares to throw himself into the pit, and to the mercy of Gargul....a life repaid with a life.

No!!! he screams as he turns and flees from the pit as fast as he can. That thing must pay, it is its life which is sacrifice and the cleric vows that he will be the one to finish it.

As he flies up the stairs a fire burns in his eyes. Roy... If Roy knew about that thing then he would pay for the children's death and the cleric would make sure it was nowhere as swift as the children's had been.

Main Temple -- DM Jim
Friday June 25th, 2010 4:51:32 PM

Running from the cavern as fast as they could, the Iron Adventurers ascended the stairs at breakneck speed. Just as the last of them are about 100' from the secret door they first entered through, the voice speaks to them one last time. But this time it is like a whisper, a voice from far away and carries with it no compulsion to carry out it's desire.

More. I need more.

Everyone is back in the main temple room, the great hall. Roy is still there, laying disabled where you left him and the secret door is still open. You do not hear the voice any longer and no one is panicked.

The Madrigal -- DM Jim
Monday June 28th, 2010 4:54:23 PM

One by one, the group leaves the Temple of the Illithid. Diving into the cold water at least knocked out any immediate concerns or thoughts about the children and their fates, and as soon as the bottom of the 10' sunken floor was touched where Zeoll indicated, each appeared back in the Madrigal inn. After everyone popped back in, it was apparent the place was shutdown. The enormous hole in the roof was left open and uncovered, letting the rain soak everything in that particular room, permeating the floor boards and leaking to the main floor below. No one was in the inn, it was dead silent.

Do you think that incredible, powerful, superlarge monster will just disappear if you destroy the painting, hey? Of course not. Perhaps it will just create another portal when we try to 'close' this one. Then no one knows about it anymore. So perhaps it is of crucial importance that humanity now knows, in our group, how to access this terrible being. Perhaps this is one of the incredibly few chances humanity's got to avert an apocalyptic future. For humanity and for the taur races, I might add. So, have you thought about that? Eh, who in game is going to naysay us, if we act in Valla's name? Seems a shame to give up an encounter/adventure the DM has prepped just because a player goes walkabout. But of course, don't let me drag the party into it if no one else wants to do it.

Maikill, you shouldn't drink random potions. There are potions that can make you weak as a halfling! I don't believe that any of the potions will help you recover from the poison. Let me check out the wands in the bag and see if they can heal you. If not, the I can heal you in the morning, or perhaps Beri will let me use his wand to heal you.

Bosk will spend a few minutes examining the wands to see if he can determine their function and to see if he can determine the bag of holding's value, size, weight, etc.

Glancing over at Roy, Bosk remembers that they still have work to do before bed. Before we do anything further, we need to get that worm out of our friend's head. Sanji, can you please bring us the mole. Bosk will then proceed to aid Roy the best he can.

Sanji fetches the mole after Bosks asks for it and adds, "I've been feeding it vegetables and such and it seems to be doing well." The cage it is in is well tended and the mole seems to be sleeping, but when brought near Roy it awakens and sniffs the airs fervently, then begins to claw at the cage in Roy's direction.

Zeoll's dog has not returned, and he also feels no link to it any longer.

ooc:
Valla's tower adventure is still available, as is Cesar's and Ransy's kidnappers. There is a new adventure too: Valla's Disapearance. Since the player left without letting us know, in the middle of a combat, his disappearance cannot be explained so easily and I would think the group would try to find out what happened to him.

The following morning, Ransy suggests: yes, well, there are two pressing matters: where has Valla gone to? I think he disappeared at the entrance of the Madrigal. Perhaps he has fallen into the water without our noticing it?
And then our kidnappers. I would certainly like to catch those! But the trail of Valla should be even fresher.

Please don't advance the time as we're still talking and doing stuff...besides, no one said they're actually using the mole on Roy yet.

I think Roy and the magic portal need to be addressed before Valla. As much I want to search for him first, we can't take the risk of another mindflayer... or worse... coming out of the portal. Once we have a better idea of what we are dealing with we can decide what to do next.

Back at the shop -- DM Jim  d100=96 ;

After praying to his god, Bosk takes the mole out of it's cage and places it near Roy. It immediately scampers over to the back of Roy's skull and sniffs wildly through the beggar-garbed man's hair. It stops all of a sudden and freezes much like a hunting hound pointing to it's prey. Roy continues to lay still for some time as the mole remains frozen in place, then without warning he screams and convulses as the mole stays attached to him. No ones sure of what to do, then as suddenly as it had started, it ended. The mole licks his lips and heads back to it's cage, searching with it's nose, then curls up inside in a cozy corner. Roy remains still, but his eyes are open--he is completely catatonic.

Zeoll's knowledge of nature leads him to believe the creature, the mole, is a brain mole--a rare variation of the common mole indeed.

I realize that Gargul was probably neutral when it came to this man's fate, having had little impact on the balance of the Wold and that his soul will be judged accordingly, but I wish the judger of souls would provide more insight on what to do about men in his condition.

I am all for searching for Valla, but what are we going to do about Roy? Do you think there is a Cleric or wizard in Hook City that may be able to help him?

If indeed Roy needs to be killed as he requested Bosk will take the duty upon himself since he fought Roy, spared his life, and subjected him to the mole.

ooc: Are there any moral guidelines in the Wold as to what to do with people in Roy's state? Can they be healed or brought to a sanitarium, or with the lack of technology do people put them out of their misery or leave them to their fate? (I assume tube feeding does not exist here).

I am not so sure about those ghosts in the tower. Perhaps they will hurt Roy even worse than he is already. At the very least he should be healed of his physical wounds first. They might accidentally kill him otherwise.
But I would not like to take a risk with Roy at all. Why not let him sleep here a night under the care of Sanji? That's the prudent course of action, I feel. Meanwhile, we should head back to the Madrigal.

As the group discusses what to do with the ranger Bosk makes his way to the kitchen and begins to fix some food for everyone. After spilling a pot of boiling water and knocking a bag of flour on the floor he gives up making anything edible by conventional means. Breaking one of his goblin seals he brings forth a delicious piece of sponge cake for everyone, complete with it's own plate and fork. Bosk then goes around and serves everyone.

Well, there is little we can do tonight. I suggest we keep watch and prepare our spells for tomorrow. As for the teleporter, I don't think we should leave it in the bag of holdings. Too much stuff forced inside can destroy it, and I think a person teleporting there could do that. Perhaps if we buried it somewhere, so they were unable to teleport there. Even if they wound up close by they would not know the teleporter's location and would be unable to destroy it.

Cesar is pretty sure there's nothing within the power of the group to help Roy come out of his catatonia unless they're willing to hire a powerful cleric to heal him. Bosk wonders about just killing him--perhaps this is why he is in the state he is as a true good person wouldn't think about killing someone out of convenience.

You guys are right about Valla, but I haven't seen him in the temple, so I'm quite positive he won't be there... plus, we need a full rest before we even considering going back to that god-forbidden place! We could start by checking out the Madrigal, although when we left it it was completely deserted... did we find that magic helmet that changes your face? We could use it and go and ask for information directly at the tavern tomorrow when it opens.

We should definitely NOT take Roy! First, I don't trust Roy. Second, we should not be carrying a helpless person into a dangerous situation, which includes every location in Mudtown outside our shop.

As for whether we should go now or after resting, the way of mudtown seems to be to either stab someone in the back when they have not chance or to hold them hostage. Under the circumstances I believe either Valla will be fine if we wait or he is already beyond helping. I am willing to head out now, but my vote is still for looking in the morning.

The Madrigal -- DM Jim
Tuesday July 13th, 2010 4:49:42 AM

The night rain was just a little more chilly this evening, perhaps because the cloud cover seemed to be more intense. Riding on Whiner, who happened to still be where Cesar had left him behind the shop--albeit his reins had been cut sometime prior to Cesar and Ransy taking it for a ride to the Madrigal, the pair arrive back at the Inn and it seemed to be in the same condition as they had left it. The rest of the group had voted to stay behind in the warmth of the shop--not wishing to push their luck with the shadow-clad denizens of Mudtown that prowled the streets looking for an easy target.

Dismounting and tying Whiner to a dock post, the pair formulated a plan to search for Valla.

Cesar and Ransy, please make Spot and Listen rolls.

Also, please give me a plan of action on how you'll search for Valla, then make a Search roll each.

If we find nothing, we'll enter the main room and you look around for people hiding there, while I continue to detect evil. If nothing in the main room, we'll inspect the stairs for tracks. If nothing, we'll go upstairs and look in the room where Zeoll fell through."

Ransy walks along the front of the building, trying to detect evil through the walls. He pays special attention to the area where the mindflayer and the magic portal used to be.
If he doesn't detect evil,
he will enter through the front door and try to detect evil in the large room with the bar (the lounge). If still nothing is found, he'll inspect the stairs for tracks of somebody going upwards or downwards during the last hour. He'll give hand-signs to Cesar to do the same. If nothing is found, he'll proceed upwards and search the room where Zeoll fell through.
search = 22 (natural 20).

If the inn is easily accessible, Cesar will start by looking around the top floor, rummaging around in the room where his companions fell in and in the room where the painting was. If nothing comes up, he'll search the other two rooms (if open and empty).

After scanning the top floor, he will continue his search on the main floor, checking to see if there are any doors he hadn't noticed before.

All this done as silently as possible... or not!

Sorry, too late to be with them right now, but your character could leave 10 minutes later. DM Jim

The Madrigal -- DM Jim
Tuesday July 13th, 2010 12:15:40 PM

The two men diligently search for Valla, following Ransy's plan--which is interrupted every now and then as Cesar bumps into something and cries out an expletive or knocks over something over like a chair. In their searches only Ransy finds a splatter of blood downstairs in the area where Zeoll's dog had been commanded to fight off anyone who had come to that spot--a subsequent smear of blood denotes the dog's body was more than likely pushed over the side of the veranda and into the water, where it's body probably floated out to sea. There is absolutely no sign of Valla.

As they finish their search, they come out to find six men have gathered about Whiner, each arguing with the other that they had seen the horse first and it was theirs. When they spot Cesar and Ransy, they quit their bickering and turn their attention to the pair.

"Oi, this your horse? Nice one it is. You don't mind us borrowing it for awhile, does ya?" The others start to giggle a little, obviously a little intoxicated from prior reveries.

Under the protection of a flap of a tent, Mara looked on at the sight as the six men were undoubtedly sizing up the pair of men who were exiting the Madrigal--an inn of ill repute that was closed down earlier this evening because the guards within turned on the owner and robbed him blind, then left town just as quickly. Mara had thought about staying at that inn, but it was shutdown before she could secure a room, so she had to find shelter under a nearby tent flap until she could think of something else to do, somewhere else to go.

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36)
Tuesday July 13th, 2010 12:25:48 PM

Mara steps out from under the tent flap. She is a tall, lean woman with ropy muscles and straight-backed posture. Short grey-white hair and a lantern jaw frame a stern, angular face with icy-blue eyes. Several scars on her face bear witness to a familiarity with violence. She wears a light coat of silvery chain with bladed gauntlets. A warhammer hangs at her belt and she holds a well-made guisarme in her hands with a confident grasp.

She does not approach, but stands and observes the scene.

Ransy, AC 21/12/20 Hp 25 or 28/35  d20+10=30 ;

Yes, I do mind. says Ransy. This is my friend's horse and it is a nice one, so I understand you want to ride it. But your figure tells me you really shouldn't try it, you might fall off and hurt yourself. So please be a nice boy, step back from the horse and give way to the officers of the law. Yes, that's what we are. What? You thought there was no law in Mudtown? Wrong again, smart guy. We are going to bring some hard needed order to this chaotic place of violence. So think again before you draw that stiletto you're hiding beneath your clothes, because I am not going to tolerate that. Now, tell your friends to be nice too and then I wish you people a pleasant evening, for there is nothing nicer than a peaceful night where everyone keeps what's his and does not touch what belongs to another.
Now step back from that horse!

Diplomacy = 30 (natural 20 again!)

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36)

Mara slowly approaches from behind, stopping 15 feet behind the group of drunken louts. She holds her guisarme casually across one shoulder.

The Madrigal -- DM Jim  d20+6=22 ;

"I don't really care for your tone, liar. You're no officer of the law and I'm not leaving here without this horse."

The men spread out as one of them grabs the reins of the horse and starts to pull it back behind them.

There is a -10 penalty for Diplomacy in situation like this where they're not willing to stand around and hear your side of the story for a full minute. Also, it seemed to me more of a Bluff roll, so I used the same roll also for a Sense Motive check.

If you intend to attack, or go after the horse, 1 round please, otherwise they'll walk away with the horse.

Beriothian munches on his cake as he examines the workmanship on the start of his bedroom. Upon returning to the main room he sees that two party members decided to take on the dagers of Mudtown alone, and sees Maikill and Bosk getting ready to join them.

Those two already ran out the door? They are an impatient group, but I guess you need to admire their passion. Well, lets go assist them in their search.

Beriothian sets down his plate and joins the party heading out the door.

Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21  d20+7=9 ;
Wednesday July 14th, 2010 3:24:02 AM

"Oi! Leave whiner alone!"

Cesar will walk towards the group wanting to get hold of the reins and begin a tug-o-war with the thugs for Whiner's possession, but he's interrupted by the tall stranger leaping in for a spectacular attack. Quickly, he moves closer to the horse, trying to mount it if possible or at least get a hold on it.

Handle Animal: 9... the luck I have on these rolls is something abominable! >_<

Wednesday July 14th, 2010 3:54:32 AM

With quick motion, Ransy lunges forward and attempts to impale the horse thief pulling on the reluctant Whiner's reins, but misses just barely.

Then out of nowhere, a woman trips a member of the horse thieves to the ground and slams the guisarme she's wielding into his chest--taking him out of action in a single blow.

Cesar, astonished at the attack, gathers his wit and rushes forward to wrestle the reins from the horse thief but fails miserably.

Three of the men in front of Ransy and Cesar draw swords and attack drunkenly at the pair, and miss them completely.

Two of the men in back draw their longswords and charge the woman, hitting her with both of their blades, drawing long slashes across her arm and torso.

OOC: I think a grapple check would be appropriate for getting a hold on the reins. Handle animal is used for giving commands to your horse, like pulling together with you once you've got a hold on the reins. Ride skill is used to mount.

Ransy is surprised by the help of the woman with the guisarme. My prayer to Domi has been heard! Thank you, Domi!
This gives him new courage and he arcs his bastard sword towards the horse thief again, saying: Your weapon, Cesar! Or do you want to be slain unarmed?

Ransy once again slashes out at the horse thief but misses badly just as Cesar tries to grab the reins away once again and fails also (Wold grapple rules are here)

Yelling at the top of her lungs (there is no silent focus while under rage :), Mara counterattacks one of the thieves as they attack and then slams the same person to the ground, driving her guisarme into his chest, taking him out of the fight.

The three men on Ransy and Cesar all attack Ransy and all miss.

The lone swordsman on Mara closes on her, taking a 5ft step, and just misses her with his blade.

Amazed at how well the woman is doing, Ransy also is successful in finally hitting his foe, rending a large bloody gash across the man's chain shirt and his chest.

Cesar continues to have no luck trying to wrest the reins of his horse away from the thief.

Once again all three ruffians strike out at Ransy, but none can get through his armor.

Down the street, some 60ft away, the rest of the Iron Adventurers arrive and see Cesar and Ransy battling what looks like three swordsmen and a woman nearby wielding a guisarme.

After seeing another friend of his hammered into the ground, and more men coming to Cesar's and Ransy's help, the lead horse-thief that Ransy just drew blood on, drops his sword and begs for mercy, "PLEASE! Don't kill me, please!" His other companions do likewise.

Battle is over and clearly shows what I thought before when I brought it up on the Rules Center, and that is the Wold house rules for Trip--especially with Improved Trip, are broken.

Victor, you're not doing anything wrong, you're doing exactly what the Wold allows you to do, and doing it well, good show :)

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35  d20+5=19 ;

Thanks for your help, missis. You're really a Domi-given wonder for it would have been difficult to fight these 6 men on my own. Thanks a lot. Can we offer you a place to sleep this night?
Let's bind them, and bind them well! These may be horse thieves, but they got violent as well. Though I must admit that I was the first to draw the sword, this man grabbed the reins of Cesar's horse, while the others spread out to attack me. They wouldn't even listen to what I had to say. Let's bind them well and lock them into the shop somewhere, and while we sleep I'll try to think of an appropriate punishment.

Ransy takes the rope and the healing kit out of his backpack, gives the rope to Bosk or Maikill, and tries to stabilize one of the men who was attacked by Mara Szabo (assuming there's at least one of them who's not dead already).

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 36/36, Rage 4/7: AC 15, HP 34/42)
Friday July 16th, 2010 6:21:55 PM

OOC: In my opinion, Improved Trip is probably the most powerful feat in D&D 3.5. It's almost broken to begin with. Make a successful melee touch attack and you get a free attack against the same target with a -4 AC penalty, who then loses a move action the next round and provokes an attack of opportunity. It's ridonkulous. But then again, melee characters don't hold a candle to spellcasters, so it evens out in the end. While I see the point of the Wold houserule, I think it could be solved by upping the DC a bit. Perhaps making it 15+Str modifier? I think that would solve a lot of problems.

OOC2: And yes, I am arguing for nerfing my own character. :)

Her breath still ragged from the rage of battle, Mara nods at Ransy, "I like the sound of that, young one." Her voice is a crisp, mellow alto with a slight bucolic drawl.

After a moment, she smiles; the scar on her lip twisting into a slight sneer despite her grin. She speaks between heavy breaths as she begins to calm down. "You know, we don't need to take them anywhere to punish them."

She takes a step toward the remaining thief. Reaching out with her weapon, she rests the head of her guisarme on the base of his neck. "Strip, now. You may leave with your life when you are as naked as the day you were born."

he slowly turns to the woman.

"Hi, I Maikill. I suppose to protect these men. They leave without me, they okay now. No need help anymore. Thanks."

the half orc barbarian stares at the woman, with disbelief and a bit of hope that she will be on her way soon.
