Yosef's -- DM JIM
Monday January 25th, 2010 8:08:59 PM

With Bosk moving into the hut and even after sucking in his gut, there is still absolutely no room for anyone else. "Well, perhaps you could wait outside in the doorway, master Taur." Yosef says, currently pressed against the wall of the hut with no room to move otherwise. Bosk see's two frightened children about 7 years of age each, a boy and girl, pressed against the far loft wall, their eyes wide with terror as the Taur stares them down.

Bosk smiles, Thank you for understanding. I didn't want to be rude by declining your offer, but I would indeed be more comfortable outside. Confined spaces always make me feel a little blue...or was that purple?

Smiling and giving a soft chuckle and reassuring face, Bosk winks to the children as he presses his arm against his side and breaks his Goblin Seal of purplesness and turns himself a light shade of lilac.

Xeron declines the invitation to sit. "If you do not mind Madam, I would rather stand "

Xeron was not present at Yosef shop so he will give it to the group the task to describe who got his head blown up that burned the shop down.

After that he will follow with the following question using a passionless and unthreatening voice:

-What business did you conduct with Black Harris and Numitor that made you fear for your life?
-Did you know who died in your shop?
-Do you know who is after you and why?

He will finish by adding We are not lawmen. We are just here to stop the brain-eater so if you did some shady business and are worried about us, don't be. I won;t judge you. A man has to feed his wife and children. We are just here to stop the deaths.

Ok, here we go again. Did you set the trap in the hut behind this one? The one thats burning down? We were told that was Numitor's hut, is this true?

If he did set the trap, Valla will continue with Why would you trap another mans house?

Yosef's -- DM JIM
Tuesday January 26th, 2010 8:17:06 PM

ooc: okay, there seems to be some confusion here. You've told Yosef that Numitor was killed in a ball of fire, then you're asking him why someone got their head exploded, he doesn't realize that you're talking about the same incident because no one else was there except the GROUP. That was about 1 hour ago. As far as he knows, someone tried to kill him and got Numitor instead. You guys have to remember that if you're not there, you only know what gossip may bring, and since there was no one there watching you since the streets were pretty much deserted, you can't expect him to know what you know. I'm going to speed things up.

Also, walking away when important info is being given out means your character can't act on anything they haven't heard. Now someone may say they fill in that character and that is fine, but if they don't, you don't hear or see anything pertaining to that knowledge.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:5/7
Tuesday January 26th, 2010 8:53:37 PM

After talking with Arriet Beri sees a confused look come across Yoef's face and he decides to jump in.

Yosef, we went looking for you earlier to warn you that the Brain Eater was likely going to target you next. When we got there we met another man who we assumed was you. When the man tried to say Numitor's name...

Beri glances over and sees the already frightened children and decides he can share the worst details later.

Well, that's when things got weird. If you can shed some light on this we would love to know. If not, can you tell us who is after you and why you are so frightened? It wouldn't per chance involve a puzzle box would it?

Yosef's -- DM JIM
Tuesday January 26th, 2010 9:14:09 PM

Yosef was frustrated at the lack of information and poorly worded questions, but he bit his tongue--one false move and these mercenaries would undoubtedly slit their throats. As he was figuring it out in his mind, Beri began questioning Arriet, to which Yosef interjected, "She has no business in this, please leave her out of it." Looking to Arriet, "The tea, please."

Taking a deep breath, Yosef began as Bosk walked away from the conversation, "So, what you're failing to tell me and what I'm thinking is true, is that Numitor was killed today because his head exploded into a big ball of flame?" Seeing nods to the affirmative, Yosef became very somber and Arriet began to cry--this was new to Xeron too since he was not at the scene of the explosion. "Well then, I truly do not have much time left." He said, pausing to think about what to say.

"It was almost a year ago I came to Mudtown, and soon befriended Numitor. He was able to get me a few jobs with Hunsinger and through him I was able to make enough to survive. Everything was going good until the night I was attacked; this town... sucks the life out of you--it's the armpit of the Wold and once you're here, there's no way to get out unless you're willing to kill for it. We sit here in his hovel while those rich bastards sit in their climate controlled city, counting their gold--I hope they all rot."

Sighing deeply, he continued, "The man, no, the monster that enslaved me, us, is named Vellinius. I can still feel the cold clammy tentacles wrap around my face and though there only remains a trace of the pain that was once there, I can still remember the sound of his teeth, his beak, digging into the back of my skull. After that, the parasite he introduced into my brain was all he needed to control me--the pain is unbearable you see. When he is near, he can hurt you, make you do things not because he's physically or mentally controlling your body, but because the pain is white hot, like a poker fresh from the fire being driven into your eye, again and again. You comply because you want the pain to stop. Numitor was the only person I have ever told about this and for this, he is dead."

Taking the tea from a shaky Arriet, Yosef showed her no emotion other than saying thank you. "About a week ago, Numitor had arranged a business deal with that first victim of the brain-eater, I do not remember his name. He was able to procure a strange animal that would remove the parasite from my brain--but he was careless it seems and too trusting, even after living so long in Mudtown. Perhaps he was desperate, trying to go against the odds and find a cure for me just so I would marry his sister, Arriet."

Finishing the cup of tea in one long pull, he set the tin can down and finished the rest of his tale. "Unknown to Numitor and myself, these men, all of the victims of the brain-eater, were also under the control of Vellinius and so they also wanted the cure and tried it before they would allow me to use it. And one by one, they have all been killed, except for me. You see, this animal that can kill the parasite that lives in my brain, can do so without killing the person it has infected. I'm not sure if you know what that means to Vellinius, but you can understand that if such a thing were made available to his slaves, they would be free from his tyranny. The last to have the animal was Black Harris, that vile swine of a man. When Numitor and I went to get the puzzle box and key to get the animal--it is securly locked away in a different place each time, he demanded we pay him more. Do I look like I have any gold? So he demanded Numitor give him his sister and the children--he said he would fix up a room for the kids, very nice he said, very nice--that swine. Numitor of course said no, but I think he was thinking about it and I think Black Harris knew it too. But before we could get the box and key, Black Harris was killed. Then I heard a band of brigands took over his shop that very next night." Shaking his head at the thought of it all, he sighed deeply again, but he was not finished as he thought he would be. "I fear Numitor betrayed them all. Maybe not to his knowing, I'm not sure, the way he died was not by the hands of the brain-eater, that is for certain--I would say it was at the hands of Vellinius' doing. The trap that was set in his hut, was set by us, yesterday. We thought that after Kweku it was my turn. I was staying with Numitor and it was he that decided to stand in for me at the boulangerie, since most people know what I look like and would not confuse the two of us for each other." Yosef stopped talking for a while, his tale finished for the moment.

Grendel (Jay) AC:17/10/17 HP 8/13
Tuesday January 26th, 2010 9:21:21 PM

"So this Vellinius is the Brain Eater then... and the compass likely is pointing us towards the animal that eats these parasites. I'm going to assume then that this Vellinius lives in that magicall warded building and has the animal in his possession."

Grendel looks around. She doesn't want to say it but this Vellinius seems to be WAY out of their league.

"Vellinius, the brain-eater? No. I have seen both when questioned about the goings-on in Mudtown." Gulping noticeablely as he tried to keep down the memory of the brain-eater, he said meekly, "The brain-eater, he looked just like my dead father, but had these large evil yellow eyes. If the beast can kill the parasite while sparing the host, why has everyone died so far? Are there survivors we don't know about? What was the plan after the slaves had freed themselves from the parasite? Were they going to make a run for it, or perhaps they know of a weakness of Vellinius?

"I do not know," said Yosef, rubbing the back of his head where he had been bitten long ago. "Perhaps he is cleaning house. I knew all of these people, we all met before the murders to negotiate a price for the animal from the first victim--damn his hide. It was Numitor that found out all about the creature, then to have died because the others were too greedy to help the rest." Wringing his hands, "We had money, to leave this accursed place, but the others, the price for the creature increased to the point where we had nothing left to leave. I will die in this place, and I fear Arriet and," Yosef motioned to the children above without saying what he meant, "will also because of their association to me."

Xeron, standing against the wall, takes it all in. Finally, he speaks up to the group.

"I see two courses of action, one may be more urgent than the other. If we decide to save Yosef, we can use the compass to find the beast, the new location. That is the first thing we can do. The next thing is to go after that Vellinius. It is obvious the way he attacked Beri and went after Maikill that he will continue to enslave people. Or we can all go back to the shop, sleep tight and go inside the evil Hook City tomorrow with Jacob. I know what I think is right. But it is just me. "

He turns silent and stands against his wall.

"The puzzle box has the first key to finding the animal, a mole I think it is, but a special one." Yosef grew noticeably upset when he said, "That bastard, Black Harris, put it in there, telling us that even if we were to steal it from him, we wouldn't be able to open it without his help. He laughed at us, how could a man do that? Laugh at us when we were so close to being healed and he was the only thing standing in our way. He even flashed the key to open where it was, right there on his keychain with his house keys, that bastard--I'm glad he's dead, sorta. Got what he deserved."

Before Bosk could react, Grendel tells Yosef about the key and compass.

For being in a town where you cannot trust anyone, our group is amazingly open with information. Just a few minutes ago we thought Yosef was someone else, and when he tells us he is the guy we thought we just saw blow up nobody seems hesitant to believe. I wish Grendel would have at least consulted with us before telling he everything.

Yosef better not attempt to go into the shop without us. Jillian and Hemust were explicitly told to let no one in, and I don't think they would believe Yosef's story without our corroboration. So far the creature and Vellinius seem to be most active at night, perhaps Yosef and confirm this. If so, I suggest we go back to the shop and protect both Yosef and Jacob. In the morning we can lend Yosef one of our helmets of disguise and keep him with us while we search out the mole....Actually, it would be best if we disguise him while we head back. We should also invite Arriet and the children to come with us. It sounds like they might need a little protection.

Bosk then looks towards Grendel and flashes his eyes towards Arriet hoping that Grendel will offer her helmet to Arriet, just for the trip.

With some simple instructions she shows her how to work the magic and is curious to see what disguise she chooses. "Bosk, you should be on baby-sitting duty... your magic is depleted and I don't want you to act as a target should a fight break out."

Valla is, once again, astounded by the information Yosef deals to the group. Figureing no way this man could lie about something like this with his family so close, Valla believes the story.. He nods his head as his question is answered, and basicly stares at the ceiling, thinking about there next move.

We need to get into Hook City tommorw morning. Surly the brain eater will take another two victims before we have a chance to stop the monster. What of this Vellinius character... So much...

Valla looks to Maikill; I think we have jumped in a lake, without knowing how deep it gets... A creature that can disguise or change its appearnce is probably a powerful one. Especially if its turning into ghosts. On the other hand; the monster with tentacles, and able to plant another creature into a host is also a powerful foe. Grendel; Bosk; I think our search for these two needs to wait until we go into Hook City tommorow morning. I believe we'd find something, or a few things, inside the city to help us against our foes. Without the aid of more magic; we may be in trouble.

Valla leans aganist the wall, still racking his brain to see if he can recall what/who the creatures are, based on the two creatures descriptions, given by Yosef and Maikill.

He looks at Maikill "Ready Maikill? Beri, are you with us?"

He is not sure where to go but the idea of resting while an evil monster roams does not sit well with him. In addition, being tired will give him an excuse not to go inside Hook City. Grendel thinks about it a bit and surmises that a mindflayer is indeed involved in the currnt situation, but she has never heard of it injecting parasites into anyone.

Valla on the other hand, hasn't a clue. Maybe for a moment there, then his thoughts turned to the brain-eater--it was definitely a doppleganger by all accounts.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:5/7

Beri considers what he has just heard. A beak introduces a parasite into your brain... he remembers that his would were superficial, and besides, he is fairly sure he would have remembered a beak, or a whole piercing his skull.

I am with you, but I want to make sure of a few things first. Do you remember the mole being guarded at all? Any traps, or guards, or even Vellis himself keeping an eye on it? Anything we need to know about bringing it safely back to you?

Yosef -- DM JIM
Wednesday January 27th, 2010 7:51:07 PM

It's likely not guarded but possibly trapped. I think we should escort Yosef and his family to our shop for safety, then hit the warehouse. Basically looks like a man with a 4 tentacled octopus on his head. Way out of our league. No idea about Vellinius though.

That said, I don't believe they are in possession of the mole creature. We might be able to hit the warehouse and pull the creature without running into these two. It's worth a shot."

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:1/12
Thursday January 28th, 2010 2:40:26 PM

Valla nods to Xeron; An Illithid; as Grendel says, and a Doppleganger. The brain eater must be a doppleganger; or so my memory of my research tells me. Thats what were up aganist Xeron. Two creatures who are magical in nature. Armed as we are I don't believe we'd survive the fight. Valla sighs, looking at Yosef and his wife; his gaze turns in the childrens direction and his eyes begin to tear up. Then, looking at Grendel; I know this is over our heads; but we must do something Miss Flower. I agree; lets take Yosef and his family back to our shop then head to the warehouse with the brick building inside it. I have a good feeling thats where the mole is kept. We'll possibly draw Vellinuis or the Ilithid there after us. Two or Three birds with one stone.

Valla then walks outside the house, and relays all information he knows to Maikill and Bosk, who are standing outside.

OOC: Can you confirm my HP right now Jim? Am I still at 1/12 or have I been cured since the head explosion?

Xeron nods at Grendel and Valla "Mind flyer? Never heard of such a creature. Doppledanger? What exactly is that? Is this the kind of creature that can look like anything they want? Then how do we know Yosef is not one? How do we know one of us is not one?"

He looks suspicious before realizing that other could think he is a doppledanger. "I guess a risk is that we all become paranoid and stop trusting each other."

Having no more questions, Bosk think back over everything he has heard and attempts to sense any trickery or deciet that may have come from Yesef.

The tense situation getting the better of him, the usually calm young cleric lets his nerves and paranois get the better of him. Before the group leaves Bosk insists on making a quick round of the area, searching for anything of interest or out of place as well as trying to spot anyone that might be watching them. If all is clear he will offer to stay back, hidden behind the small house until everyone leaves. He will then follow behind the party, using his night vision to bring up the rear and will also attempt to cover up everyone's foot prints until well away from both buildings.

What ever an Ilithid is, I do not want it following us back to the shop or to be able to figure out that Yosef is with us.

Beriothian slips back to have a private word with Bosk.

I'm not quite sure what happened to be back in the alley a few nights ago, but I do know that I don't want to be in that much pain, and definitely don't want to be controlled. I know this is a lot to ask, but if something should happen to me, can I trust you to knock me out cold?

The Warehouse -- DM JIM  d20=15 ; d20=2 ;
Friday January 29th, 2010 12:06:23 PM

Setting the plan in motion, the group (with Bosk tailing behind) go back to the shop to drop off Yosef, Arriet and her two children. Sanji gives them the large room upstairs to sleep in.

Bosk soon rejoins the company as he's fairly certain he wasn't followed, unless one of the several groups he walked near were in fact groups of doppelgangers.

It was well past midnight when the group arrived at the warehouse. Bosk pulled out the slightly bent key. Testing it, he found that it was not soft metal at all, in fact he figured it was tempered steel. Searching as he did before, he shimmied the key sideways into a narrow slot, turned it with an audible click and unlocked the front door. Opening it found another door, but this one looked to be ironbound. In fact, upon careful examination, the key Bosk used looks to have unlocked both the outer and inner door--however, that was not the most interesting detail of the building. It seems that the outer wooden structure was just a facade for an inner stone building, one that the ironbound door was attached too. On the walls of the outer building, a faint design could be seen, so if someone were to look through one of the slats in the wood walls, they would be lead to believe they were looking into a fairly deserted warehouse, not another stone building within. The ironbound door opened as Bosk reached for it.

On guard, the group waited, but then thought that the door opened of it's own accord due to a spell maybe, an unseen servant. Inside was lit with torchlight and the group cautiously entered. From left to far right, there were six rows of lockers--the inner four rows having lockers on both sides. There were ten lockers, per side, so a total of 100 lockers about 5'x5' each. The compass, which Grendel reassembled, pointed to the far right locker. Everlasting torches lit the entire area and were securely mounted into the stone walls. As the group entered entirely, the ironbound door closed behind them. Also, the floor where they walked was being cleaned of all tracks as they entered and walked about.

Moving to the far right end and down the row of lockers, the group stops at #90. It was locked of course, but the key Bosk had didn't want to work, it was not the right size. Looking at the key however, Bosk noticed that the handle ended with a square plate with odd shaped holes in it. Turning the key around and inserting it handle first all the way to the bend in the key, proved successful. Upon turning it and opening the locker, those close saw a small wire kennel housing a small dark furred animal that was unmoving. It's water bottle and food bowl was empty, and it smelled terrible in the locker. Upon close examination, the animal was still alive, but barely. It was then that from two nearby lockers, the muffled cries of help became heard by the group.

Hearing the cries for help, Bosk tries to remove the key from the lock and finds that it is stuck tight. Bosk quickly examines the kennel to make sure it is locked and the creature secure inside before anyone attempts to remove the cage.
With a groan the cleric remarks calls everyone over and remarks, The key is stuck. We need to lock the locker back up before removing it. I suggest we take the cage out before doing so, but I would perfer it if Grendel we to check on the mole first and make sure it can be moved safely. If not, we may need to heal it first. Xeron and Beri, if the key won't come out you may need to work on the locks. Then, lowering his voice to a whisper continues, Be careful, this may be a trap. Judging by the way the door opened on its own and the fact that something is cleaning our foot prints off the floor, I believe that there is some type of magic at work and that there may be someone near by maintaining the spell. There is also a chance that the other lockers are trapped. Black had said that the maole was securely locked in a different place each time. My guess is that there that some of the lockers are trapped in order to keep someone from breaking into every locker to find the mole.

Bosk quickly scans the room for enemies and traps.

Maikill walks over to the locker with the caged small animal. A look of deep concern on his face, he fills the water bottle and puts a bit of his rations in the bowl. Not knowing what it might eat, he puts some jerkey, dried fruit and some biscuit in the bowl.

Taking a bit of water, he puts a drop on the end of his finger and puts it up to the mouth of the small animal.
Then, he takes a bit of the dried fruit and biscuit and slowly chews it in his mouth, making a soft chewed up portion of the rations. He spits it into the palm of his hand and then takes the tip of a finger and gets a bit of the chewed food on it. He holds it up to the mouth of the creature.

I suggest that you refrain from asserting your opinion of our actions for the moment considering we're saving your life. Fair?" Then she turns on her heel to offer Lemnas a friendly, "You're quite welcome, seems Flower has been watching over you this day friend. No repayment required, though information would be welcome. Even the slightest detail could offer us clues to solve this mystery."

When Ransey mentions he was place here a night ago, Grendel shoots the rest of her crew a look. "Stay on your toes lads, looks like we've got a new player in this game... or perhaps Vellinius himself has taken ownership of this warehouse since Black Harris passed."

As long as the prisoners agree; Valla will lead them out of the stone building, and staying in the space between the facade and the building. Only if they protest----- I suggest you let me inspect your wound; otherwise one of those lockers will make a nice grave plot. This is not a joking or negotiating matter. I need to check your heads.

Standing guard, Maikill can not help but laugh at the conversation from the one calling himself Ransy and Grendel. Looking at the man recently freed from the locker, Maikill says:

"You one say not hurt locker, even to get you out? You tell us what law is? Who are you, you with guard? No look like guard. They have clothes and weapons. This is Mudtown, we know law. Take care of yourself any way you can. That is law here."

Bosk looks at the captives, not quite sure what to do with them, or what to make of the situation. I don't think we need to worry about Vellinus. Why would Black keep the mole here if Vellinus had access? And if Vellinus knew Black had the mole, wouldn't he tear the place apart looking for it?I could be wrong though, something about this situation clearly does not make sense, and I doubt we will be able to piece it together without knowing why these guys were locked up. Perhaps Yosef knows something that could help us.

Bosk pulls out Zimina's Great Axe, which the group has yet to sell, and looks it over. I could help pry the the other lockers open with this. I can get on one side of the door and Maikill can work the other to pry them open, but I am hesitant to return their weapons and armor until we know we can trust them. They cn have their cloth back, however I say we hold on to their equipment, assuming we can find it, until the mole can tell us if they are under Vellinus control.

Praise Wardd, it sounds like she's screaming in fright, not pain. With a little luck perhaps Maikill did enough damage to the locker that I have better access to the locking mechanism, or even spit open the tumblers for me.

After checking over the prisoners wounds; Lemnas and Cesar; Valla thinks silently for a few moments. No lacerations... No brain eater.. These men were hit with something blunt. Takin prisoner for another means.. But what purpose? Valla then looks to Bosk; who is outside helping him keep an eye on the prisoners.. These two men were hit with something, not pecked at or even cut. They've been put into these lockers for another reason. Maybe by the brain eater or someone working for the creature and Vellinus. But I find that hard to believe as well. It seems its a coenceidence that they were locked up in the same place as the mole. Although I haven't checked Ransy yet; I'd say his injury is the same.

Valla then walks back into the building; Any luck with these peoples gear? Or any of the other lockers? Ransy. If your done with our critter friend, I would like you to come outside; so I can look at your wound as well. Its very possible you were pecked at; or possibly even had something inserted into your brain. I need to make sure thats not the case. After I've done this, Bosk and I can fill you in with whats been going on. You proved your intentions already; but that doesn't mean you cant lose control of yourself. Please follow me.

Valla goes outside again and checks Ransy's wound on his head. (D20: 5) After checking the wound, Valla recites the last few days events to the loin clothed man.

We have sort of takin it upon ourselves to find a team of villians here in mud town. It seems that a doppleganger has been going around eating merchants brains, for an unknown reason. Meanwhile, It also seems that a Ilithid, named Vellinus; is going around putting 'worms' into peoples brains; making it to where he can control them. Were not totally sure how these two are connected; or why. But it does seem as though they are working together. The mole we had you cure; that little critter seems to be a unique key to all of this. Although we havn't fit the piecies together fully yet, it seems we've come very close. The elf then looks to Boks; Did I miss anything? Anything else to add Horned Master?

Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 16 of 20 Spells
Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 4:41:14 PM

I think you covered things pretty well. An Illithid, more commonly known as a mind flayer, is a creature that eat brains to survive and is known for its powerful mind magic. Basically looks like a man with a 4 tentacled octopus on his head. What is unique in this case is that it appears that the illithad, one going by the name of Vellinius, is inserting a parasite into peoples heads that he uses to control them. Although they are known to feed on brains, in this case it looks like there is a doppelganger, commonly taking on the appearance of deceased people, that is eating the peoples brains. I personally do not know much about these creatures, so I do not know what is normal for them to do. Taking into consideration the the warehouse and lockers we found you in, I believe there is more to these deaths than we originally thought.

Bosk calls into the building, Someone explain to the others that it will take us some time to free them, and try to determine how many more people are locked up. Is it just a few more, or are there a hundred. Also, we need to determine if anyone knows why they were locked up and who it was that imprisoned them. Perhaps, if we could locate the master key, we could get people out of these lockers faster, or at least know what we have gotten our selves into.

Valla nods along with Bosk and the taur finishes his explanation. A very odd case indeed... But it must be solved. As Bosk said; it seems we've stumbled upon something bigger than we thought..

Valla nods as Ransy gets his equipment and gear; and allows the human to get dressed; and wear his weapons. Remember; human; Im a wizard. If you choose to strike me or act like your going to harm one of my group; you'll be stuck in one place so long you'll think your paralized. Valla gives a smile.

When Xeron offers his idea to everyone; Valla nods again. Yes; Me, Grendel and Bosk. Along with the prisoners we've rescued will go back to the shop. We'll send Ransy here back with something of some use. Maikill, Xeron, Beri and Ransy should be ok getting all these people out by themselves. Us three should make sure Yosef recovers fully; and make sure the mole is safe and sound.

Valla looks inside the building; Amazing. A wooden facade; inside is a beautifully built stone construct. Simply genious!

Well? Shall we?

Grendel nods to Valla and Xeron, "Agreed. Let us return and put Yosef at ease. The rest of you return quickly as we all need to rest before we venture into Hook City in the morning." Grendel intends on seeing to Yosef, then going to bed for the night immediately after. For now, she will take care of the mole and hopefully find an appropriate cage for it at Harris' old shop.

Ransy sighs, why does he want to threaten me now? Unless he is a very powerful wizard, he's no match for fighters like me. Well, he probably doesn't like Domi.

Well, I'll go with you Valla; I might say I am good with animals, so if you want me to carry the mole, that's okay. Otherwise, I'll just walk in front and clear the way in case someone is seeking trouble.

Splitting up at night
Wednesday February 3rd, 2010 5:51:41 PM

Valla, Grendel,Bosk and newcomers Ransy and Cesar head back to the shop with the mole still caged.

Maikill, Xeron, and Beri remain behind at the locker station.

When Valla et al enter the shop, Grendel goes and retrieves Yosef--Arriet and the two children remain sleeping. When brought down the mole noticeably becomes more active, sniffing the air and clawing at the cage in Yosef's direction.

Beriothian volunteers to stay at the warehouse where his keen hearing is will be the groups best indicator of danger approaching. He also feels bad for the remaining trapped prisoners and figures he and Xeron are the only ones who can try opening a few of the remaining lockers to look for anything to pry them out.

Xeron, have you tried freeing the key from the locker yet, I was unable to do anything with that stubborn thing.

I hope this thing doesn't make Yosef's head explode... Grendel smiles as Yosef walks into the room. Holding up the caged animal she asks, "Is this what you've been looking for?"

If so, Grendel will open the cage and allow the animal to remove the parasite in Yosef's head. Then she'll feed the creature and return it to it's cage. She smiles as another evil has been undone in Mud Town, hopefully one day the tides will change and this place will become a fair place to live. One day... just not one within her lifetime she'd guess.

With a smile she hits the sack and considers all the wonders she will encounter once in Hook City with Jacob the Lesser.

He will stand guard, listening and watching for bypassers or monsters.

He will use his detect evil ability to scan the streets/roofs as well.

Cesar - HP 29/29, AC 19(20)
Thursday February 4th, 2010 3:06:57 PM

Following the party inside the house, Cesar stays quiet and watches with bewildered eyes what happens.

As soon as the occasion arises, he will approach Grendel and ask: "Excuse me, m'lady, but could you please explain what is happening? Why have you gone to so much trouble to bring back this mole to this family... is it some kind of beloved pet?".

The Mole  d6=5 ;
Thursday February 4th, 2010 4:02:43 PM

As soon as the cage is lowered to the floor and opened, the nearly blind mole scampers directly towards Yosef. With it's sharp claws it begins to climb Yosef's leg, much to the man's objection. Reaching down and picking it up, Yosef places it on his shoulder, and the mole moves directly to the back of his head. The moles very long, almost prehensile, nose works furiously as it twitches about and sniffs rapidly around the area where Yosef said he had been bit--then it stops. Looking as if it had been paralyzed, it's nose stops moving about as it remains firmly pressed against Yosef's old wound and the mole inhales and exhales slowly but deeply. To the careful observer, one could almost see little sparks of light around the tip of the moles nose. This lasts for about thirty seconds before the mole begins to sniff around a bit more, then turns away from Yosef and begins looking for a way off his shoulder. Grendel takes the mole and places it back in it's cage, which it seems to have grown accustomed to--the cleric of Flower also notices that the mole's belly seems a bit fuller and has no interest in eating at the moment, instead, it curls up into a ball and goes back to sleep in his cage--a wee smile adorning it's face.

After the matter of the mole is taken care of, someone hands Ransy a crowbar from the shops inventory to take back with him to the warehouse. No one seems to notice that he did not enter the shop as Cesar had--perhaps he was a vampire and had to be given permission to enter, who knows, no one seemed to really care that the newcomer was here and was willing to help--had Mudtown really turned these once do-gooders into the hardened lot that cruised the streets and pathways for an easy target to waylay? Maybe they were just tired. Whatever the reason, Ransy heads back to the warehouse, crowbar in tow. No one was on the streets. What little activity there was, was only from the taverns and inns still open at this hour. If Ransy made it to the warehouse, who could tell if it were truly Ransy and not the doppelganger that they knew skulked about the streets of Mudtown.

Almost an hour passed at the warehouse before Ransy arrived with the crowbar. He looked none worse for wear and handed off the crowbar to Maikill who eagerly jumped at the opportunity to do some good, or was it an eagerness to destroy the locker door that had foiled him previously. Soon enough, Maikill releases a woman in her mid-twenties and an older man in his fifties from the two lockers they knew had people in them. They immediately get dressed, except for the older man. "Hmm, these are not my clothes, these are the clothes of a beggar." He introduces himself as Roy and describes the very set of clothing and equipment that Lemnas put on and left with. Having no choice, he puts on the soiled beggars garb and looks quite upset about it.

Xeron finally figures out the workings of the lock, he thinks, but cannot free the key itself. It is basically a one use key, the master key unlocks the key for use and the locker remains unlocked until the locker key is used to lock it, then when the same key is used to unlock it, it remains captive in the lock.

Xeron turns red as the woman comes out of the locker wearing very little and although he tries to look away, he cannot prevent himself from peeping a time or two. "What a loser you are! She has just been imprisoned for a long time and all you think about is peeping on her!

When the old man complains about his clothes being taken, the rogue just shrugs thinking "At least you have your life

When the woman is finally dressed, the rogue approaches her, clearing his throat a few times before asking in a very unsecure voice "Madam, do you want us to escort back to safety? The streets are not safe but no one in their right mind would dare attack us "

A timid smile appears as he thinks "Why would she want a loser like you to walk her home? Get real boy!"

He stands there, fully expecting the woman to reject his offer.

Satisfied that he has overcome the stubborn lockers, Maikill helps the people out of them.

"Sometime muscle more important than skill. Hi, I Maikill. I get you out of box."

Seeing that the man seems distraught, Maikill tells him about the man the rescued earlier.

"Man come out of box over hour ago. Say clothes were his, say he leaving Mudtown. He went away fast. He look like woodman ranger. You woodman ranger? You look like beggar now. Hard to tell who someone is. What you do now?"

Appoline & Roy
Thursday February 4th, 2010 4:44:40 PM

Appoline stood there, her eyes locked with Xeron's. The rogue could just imagine what the woman would say next, "Oi love, you're a slick one eh? All buttering me up like, wanting to fill all me nooks and crannies with your sweet butter cream, eh, what? What? Ehhheee." But it never came, the woman only nodded her head to Xeron's offer and said nothing.

"Well, I don't know," replied Roy to Maikill's question, scratching his chin, "I guess I find a spot tonight, then head back out in the morning down the ithmus to Gateway Downs and the forest beyond to my home and start over. I knew I should have never come into town, but I needed some dry goods, flour and such, and well, a pint or two of ale--then here I am." Sighing deeply, Roy shook his head at the idea of what had happened to him.

He takes a step back and look at Roy "sir, any idea who attoacked and where? and you Madam too?"

We are going to have a busy day tomorrow, so I suggest we both get some rest. It would probably be best if we have Jillian and Hemst sand guard first. When the others get back they can rest and I will pray to Gargul for protection and stand watch. Otherwise, if you would feel safer, I can take first watch and will rest after the others return. If Grendel agrees, Bosk will encourage everyone to get some rest.

She looks at Cesar with an inspective eye, then shrugs as she finds his inquiry merits no scrutiny. "There is an evil at work within Mud Town. Powerful evil. He uses a creature to implant parasites within his captured victims, these parasites allow the man to control people. Turns out this mole is special and enjoys eating parasites. This man is now free and his family safe from many dangers. This is a normal day for us in Mud Town, an exhausting place to practice kindness and good deeds."

Grendel nods her approval to Bosks plan, "Aye, we should all be gettin some shut-eye on account of tomorrow." And with that she is off to bed.

Lockers, horses and mute girls
Friday February 5th, 2010 5:31:15 PM

Appoline thinks about it and nods once. Roy also takes the group up on their offer and thanks them for it. When all is done and said, the group leaves the warehouse under dark of night and heads back to the shop. With the rain and moonless night, it's hard going, thankfully Maikill and his darkvision leads them safely through the muddy streets to the shop. As they approach the shop, Maikill see's a lone figure running towards them. Axe at the ready, he soon see's that it's one of the newcomers, Cesar. The man nearly runs over Maikill before he see's him in the dark and pulls up short. Both men acknowledging each other, everyone heads back into the safety and warmth of the shop. Once inside, arrangements are made for everyone to sleep on the floor--there is little room left to even move around those sleeping already.

Cesar rests a little easier knowing that his horse was still at the stables where he left it. Riding around Mudtown on a horse was perilous at best, so he was smart to stable it upon coming to town. He was not able to get his horse out though--he still had an outstanding balance of 2gp (1gp per day stabling fee), but the horse was safe and being fed and he didn't want to push his luck with the stable owner after rousing him from his bed so late at night.

Sometime that night a scream echoed through the streets--it's hunger growing as it searched for it's prey.

In the morning the rain started to let up, for about five minutes, then began in earnest once more. Jacob was bleary-eyed and the first up and was quite surprised to see so many new people in the shop--it was crowded. Sanji thought about making breakfast, but had learned her lesson and let Grendel see to it, she would clean up afterwards. As everyone began stirring about and rising to some coherent consciousness, a knock came on the door. Sanji looked out the window and saw a small boy, no older than ten years, standing at the door. Upon seeing her, he smiles and waves and waits. Opening the door, the little boy greets Sanji warmly and presents her with a sealed letter and says, "I'm to wait and take back your answer". Warily she opened it and read the contents:

To the previous owner(s) of key #90,

Last night, in addition to securing your own items from your locker, you procured items that were not yours. We try to maintain anonimity between our clients and in this case we have not released any information to the owners of storage units 81-87 of which you broke into. They have demanded compensation and we limit such compensation to 100gp per locker. The fee to have the lockers you damaged repaired is 50gp per locker--two such lockers in this case. Therfore your total balance due is 800gp payable immediately upon receipt of this letter. The messenger boy who delivered this letter has been instructed not to speak of what he sees or hears, but then again he knows nothing that could help you if you choose to interrogate him. If you feel that you cannot pay now, or harm/kill the messenger boy, we will be left with no other course of action but to firebomb you relentlessly until your establishment and everywhere you sleep is left in ashes. Please sign and remit payment to the messenger boy now. Thank you and have a nice day.

What's up? Did we get a letter about Jacob's entrance into the city?

Young man, we will need to wake everyone to share this letter with them before we can send our response. Why don't you join Grendel in the kitchen and help yourself to some breakfast while we discuss this.

Beriothian gives a quick peek out the door for anyone or anything that could indicate a firebomb attack or any other sort of trickery.

He looked about to see what Beri was looking at and added, "Also, sir, be wary, inviting a stranger into your home could be dangerous. I've heard that vampires can only enter your home if they're invited in, so it's better to be safe than sorry." The boy seemed to be rather matter of fact on the notion about vampires.

When Ransy hears this message, he says (but not in the boy's hearing): this is outrageous; they want compensation for the people who were kidnapped and locked in their lockers? These people who are the socalled 'owners of 81-87' are the very people whom we must catch and bring to justice! They have no right to compensation whatsoever! And whoever wrote this letter, didn't even mention his or her name nor reveal his identity. Instead he only utters threats of fire bombing. That's devious and improper for any legal authority. Whoever he or she is, this is a matter of extortion and therefore I strongly object against complying with its demand for money.

As usual, Xeron stays away from the breakfast table and eats standing against a wall by the window. His eyes wander on the mute woman but he has no idea what to say to her so he stays silent.

Xeron reads the letter but show no emotion. "This is a bigger organization if they can find it was us who took out the mole but also freed the people. We can not pay and we will be at risk because they know who we are and we don't. We can pay and make it go away until we can go back after it. We can not pay and disappear from MUd Town forever. Waking up just in time to hear the knock at the door, Cesar walks up to the rest of the group: "Goodmorning, my friends!", he says quite cheerfully, then seeing the letter in Grendel's hand continues, "It's always nice to wake up with a letter from someone! It shows that people still care for you even if they are far away! It was always a special occasion when uncle Joone used to send something to the farm!"

After hearing the contents of the letter, his expression completely changed: "I'm not that good at maths, but it seems that someone was actually willing to pay quite a lot of gold to have me kidnapped... why? I'm not important or anything... nevertheless there is no way I can pay whatever gold this mysterious person wants... and no, Xeron, I won't even allow you to lend me the money: mother always said never to give in to bullies and evil people and whoever wrote us this message is definitively both! I say we go and tell the guards and then help them out with any investigation to find the culprit!"

"By the way, Whiner is fine: he's still at the stables where I left him upon getting here... although I need to pay the owner, so I better find myself some kind of job as soon as possible. I don't want him to go thinking I want to swindle him or whatnot..."

Grendel nods to the boy after giving the letter a read. "You'll wait for our response, we'll bring you some breakfast to make the wait worth your while. Does that sounds good?"

Grendel will hit the kitchen to drum up a huge breakfast. Her work is not as good as it usually is as her mind is on other things at the moment. Hook City, the mystery of Vellinous, this new threat of 'fire bombing'. That said, her work is still more than adequate if not nourishing and her hopes are the other's minds will also be on other topics as they consume her breakfast.

Pitching in to the conversation regarding the payment of monies she says, "We didn't steal from a group of kidnappers, we stole from a warehousing operation. Regardless of what was in those lockers, the same fee applies... this is likely the insurance policy, which would lead me to believe that they don't have any idea of the use of their lockers. If you want to find out who uses the lockers, stake out the warehouse. As for the damages, we did the damage so now we've got to pay for it." Looking to Ransy and Cesar she says, "That puts you boys in our debt for a while, I'm sure you'll both be able to work it off shortly."

With that Breakfast is served. Cesar finds 3 gold coins tucked in the napkin of his breakfast plate. Grendel takes a moment to scribble a note to give to the boy to return to his employers along with the 800 gp. It will read as follows:

Have need of your services as a secure warehouse. Request a contact once returned from Hook City. Message can be left at ol' Black Harris' store. -Grendel

Seeing Grendel break away from the group the taur hurries towards the kitchen to find out what was going on by the door. After catching up on the news Bosks offers to help Grendel in the kitchen, however it only takes a minute for him to realize that Grendel was worked up and that he was only getting in her way.

A few moments later, when Grendel comes out of the kitchen and comments on the lockers, Bosk finds himself in complete agreement with her. The lady is right. The warehous owner did nothing wrong, and I was mistaken in my assumption that the warehouse belonged to Black. Bosk lowers his head slightly as he says this, remembering that he had doubts about the warehouse once he realized the lockers were double locked. That being said, I don't think that anyone in our group could have left innocent people locked up in a warehouse and not have tried to free them. I also don't believe that any of you would have perferred to have been left locked up. Ransy, I remember that you didn't want the locker damaged, but surely you would have given 100g for your freedom. Grendel is right, we should pay the bill and go after those who are truely responsible.

Bosk sympathises with Ransy. Although he dislikes the idea of the kidnappers getting any of the money, not paying seemed to him like stealing from an innocent party. Innocent[/v] he thinks to himself, I wasn't expecting to have a thought like that about a bussiness in Mud Town.

You may not fear him, but you do have less ot lose. Putting aside the shop and everything we own, we are currently taking care of eight other people in this house. Two of whom are children and thier mother who cannot defent themselves. It may not be fair, but we need to consider thier well being and cannot put them in danger after promising to protect them. Besides, we wronged the bussiness. They have a right to reperations. If we harm an innocent party while trying to do what is right, is it not our responsibillity to make things right with them? The people who wrote the letter have done nothing wrong, at least not intentionally from what we know. The kidnappers are the ones who did wrong, so they are the ones we should go after. We need to make sure that it is only the guilty who pay for thier sins.

Saturday February 6th, 2010 12:56:52 PM

I don't follow you when you say we wronged the business. I am not aware of having done anything wrong. But I do understand that we have to protect the innocent children and their mother in this house. If you want to pay because of them, and if you promise to go after the kidnappers with me, then it's okay with me.
Unfortunately, I don't have any money right now. So if you can forward it for me, I'll pay my share back later. But let it be understood that I do this only because of the innocents in this house! Not because I am afraid of fire balls or retribution from a shady warehouse-owner.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:1/12
Saturday February 6th, 2010 1:04:23 PM

Valla gets home; retires to his room without hardly making a noise. When he awakes after his eight hour rest; he prepares his spells; (same as yesterday). Coming down stairs, he fixes himself a plate, again being silent. WHen the boy comes to the door, with the letter, and after Bosk, Grendel and everyone said their piece; Valla stays silent, thinking to himself. Possibly the owner of the warehouse doesn't know who exactly uses these lockers; in detail at least.

I think we should pay the gold,. I don't believe it will go to kidnappers. I think we should stake out the warehouse; sometime soon; and find out who uses it, and which locker if were able to.

OOC: **Sorry guys, I've been busy this week, I wrecked this morning; and just honestly not had alot of time to get to the library and get online. SOrry! I'll be back in the swing when winters over.....

Maikill is always amazed that some marks on a paper can bring about so much discussion.

"You sure it say firebomb? Why not person come tell us, be brave. Why send little boy? I no understand use paper, it better to tell people. You decide, I broke locker. Maybe I should pay?"

Messenger boy et al
Saturday February 6th, 2010 4:43:27 PM

The boy waits patiently--perhaps he's done this before. Soon enough he's being fed and after thinking about it a bit, he declines to take the food, "I'm awfully sorry ma'am, but I've been told never to drink or eat anything offered to me, even if it's been eaten or drunk by someone else first--because of poison and all. Did you know that Belladonna, also known as Deadly Nightshade, is a perennial herbaceous plant? Also it has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and of course a poison."

The boy takes his backpack off and opens it to accept the 800gp and note. Bowing, once it's filled and fastened closed, he says politely, "Thank you ma'am, have a nice day!" With that done, the boy takes off at a fast clip down the street.

With the morning excitement done, Jacob is about to speak up when Yosef asks first, "So, um, whats the plan? What are Arriet, the kids and I to do? Are we going with you into Hook City?" Jacob looks to the group inquisitivily.

Saturday February 6th, 2010 5:45:34 PM

Standing against the wall and listening to the group, Xeron's face stays emotionless. However he thinks to himself For the first time people did not jump on each other ideas. It is possible that we are becoming a group after all.

If Grendel uses the group loot, Xeron will giver her nothing. If not, he will give he 100GP or whatever his share is.

He approaches the mute woman "I am not sure if you have a place to go but you are welcome to stay here while the group is in piggish Hook City. I am sure Sanji will not mind the company other than the two love birds. "

He steps, funnly expected to have a bowl of porridge thrown at him.

Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 16 of 20 Spells
Saturday February 6th, 2010 6:41:29 PM

Thank you Ransy. You have my word as a Cleric of Gargul that I will help you go after the kidnappers. There are a lot of strange things going on in Mud Town right now, and I have a growing suspicion that they may all be intertwined some how.

It seems to me that Xeron doesn't wish to enter the city today. Perhaps the two of you could stake out the warehouse and look for the kidnappers. If you guys find a lead let us know. I'm sure there are many in our group willing to help stop these guys.

Oh, and don't worry about our group misinterpreting your actions. The reputation of Domi and his followers precedes you. No one wold presume your actions to be out of fear.

When Yosef asks if he will be going into the city Bosk shakes his head. I think it would be better for you to stay here under our protection. Jillian, Hemust, Sanji and the rest are very capable and the less people see of you right now the better. In fact, it might be a good idea if we have someone in our party enter Hook City disguised as you. If anyone is spying on us, we may be able to convince them that you entered the city and never left, or at least not through the main gates."

ooc:
Bosk plans to go into the city with three goals.
1) Follow the lead he recieved on Steel Grass Armor
2) Find a Monsterologer and try to get more information on Dopplegangers and Mindflayers
3) See if he can find the COC and buy Durgan an ale.

Appoline and Roy
Saturday February 6th, 2010 6:51:49 PM

Appoline makes some gestures that Xeron just does not understand. Sighing, she points to her and then the door, then makes a circle back.

"I hate to impose," Roy says, " but I see you have a set of men's travel clothes over there, and well. If you could loan them to me, I'll be able to pay you back after a bit. Once I get home, I'll be able to craft me a longbow or two and can return here to pay back my debt. If I leave now, I should be home before it gets dark."

Yosef
Saturday February 6th, 2010 6:53:16 PM

As Appoline gestures and Roy speaks, Bosk realizes that he knows very little about them. As he replays the nights events in his head he slowly remembers the strange language being mumbled in the warehouse. Bosk quickly looks over towards the group, trying to make it appear as though he is getting feed back from his comrades on what they should do about Yosef, when in reality he is attempting to determine Appoline and Roys motives. Mind Controllers and Doppelgangers, how can we know who to trust. What if someone was casting a spell, or Vellenius was giving them some sort of instructions. As he thinks this he remembers the mole's reaction upon seeing Yosef and quickly glances at it and observes it's behavior. He is particular he is curious if Roy and Appoline can be trusted. Is he being sincere and if he can be trusted. Does he intend to return and pay us pack for the cloths, or could the be planning on betraying us to Vellenius? As he ponders this, he is also curious about Appoline's loss of voice and wonders if some type of magic might be in play, or if someone in the group may have a way of restoring her voice to her.

Xeron AC AC16 HP 13/13
Sunday February 7th, 2010 7:04:04 AM

Xeron shakes his head at the woman, is a rather display of emotions. "I am sorry M'dam but I do not understand. Please nod once if you want to stay here, two if you want to leave and three times if you want me to leave you alone "

He looks around at the magic users "Does any of you has a useful spell to let us understand the poor woman?"

Maikill HP 24/28, AC17

"I no have magic, but Grendel does. I see her put marks on paper, some people have power to look at marks and make words. Maybe Grendel use her magic on paper, show it to woman?"

Maikill shrugs, not knowing if that makes sense or not.

Ransy AC 19/11/18 Hp 23/23  d20+7=24 ;
Sunday February 7th, 2010 2:38:04 PM

Ransy thinks that Roy's haste to leave is a little bit suspicious, as well.
So he uses his sense motive skill to notice anything is wrong: d20+7=24, while asking Roy how far away he lives, how he is going to sell his longbows, etc.
Later he says to the group:
So I and Xeron are going to watch the storage area with the lockers? That's okay, but perhaps Cesar should join us as well. He has a stake in this too. Cesar? BTW, I have thought about the reason why we were locked up there. Could it be that we were meant as a kind of food? The boy who just left said something about vampires around here. We may have been stored away so that they could drink our blood later on, perhaps?

Appoline nods twice to Xeron, then makes the circle motion.

In talking with Roy, Ransy gets the sense that he's a truthful person and is not trying to deceive anyone. The ranger lives about a half day's walk away and after crafting a few longbows, he could return to sell them or give them to the shop to sell. He also says, "I could take Yosef, his wife and children with me. There is a small fishing village down the coast that has would be suitable for them to start over in. It's not much, lacks many of the conveniences of places like Mudtown, but it's a start. I live not far from there, and check up on the villagers every now and then and have found them to be a hardy, honest folk."

Valla is slightly amused at the little boy; seeing him go about his buisness as though it were completely normal.. Maybe he has done this before??? Odd job for a young human...

When Roy asks to borrow clothes, leave and return, Valla shakes his head fiercely; No; boy we don't know who you are. Or who you work for. We've offered hospitality; saftey and a roof. Why would you leave; only to come back to repay a debt? When surly you can repay your debt to us while you stayin here. The elf looks to Grendel and Bosk; I wouldn't let the boy leave.

When magic is brought up to restore the girls voice, Valla merely shurgs; I can't help there Xeron.

As far as Yosef and his family; I say they stay here as well. No sense in taking them into Hook City with us. They would only be out in the open a bit more than we want them to be. No, Yosef, Mudtown may not be safe, but traveling around is the most unsafe route. If you stay here, we at least know where the enemies must come to find you. If you go into Hook City; you could be attacked around every corner, or inside every shop. Much too risky.

Anyone think another brain has been eatin throughout the night? Maybe we should ask around on our way into the city?

Once inside Hook City; Valla will look around for a magic shop. Wanting to buy clw potions, bulls str potion, and a few books as well.

The perils of splitting up
Sunday February 7th, 2010 3:11:02 PM

Sometimes splitting up is necessary, but oft times in a game like this (play by post) it can lead to one group sitting on their hands for weeks on end, not being able to progress further in the game because one group may have entered into a combat--so please be aware of this. In other words, all groups move at the same speed, so if one gets bogged down, the entire game moves at the speed of the slowest group.

Roy
Sunday February 7th, 2010 3:20:22 PM

"Boy?" Roy says incredulously. "I may be young by elf terms, but I am no boy. Five and fifty years I've stayed alive in this Wold, so please do not call me boy again." Turning to the others, "So you mean to turn me into a slave to work off my debt? I don't think so. I will leave today either dressed as a beggar or not. I have asked for your help and have offered my help and repayment in return. If you do not accept it, then fine, either way I'm leaving."

Ransy AC 19/11/18 Hp 23/23
Sunday February 7th, 2010 3:44:48 PM

I trust Roy. Roy, I feel no deceit in you, I think you can be counted upon to fulfil your promise. I also think you've made an excellent offer to Joseph and his family. I don't know how he got caught up in it, but I do know that Mudtown is a very dangerous place to be right now. These people would be a lot safer in a village than here.

OOC: I do not want to split up, but Ransy doesn't have any reason to go into Hook City right now, does he? Unless there was a clue that the kidnappers were in Hook City too.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7
Sunday February 7th, 2010 4:20:16 PM

I think we shouldn't be splitting up at a time like this. There is a doppelganger, a mind flayer, what appears to be an organized kidnapping ring, and a warehouse owner that may have the ability to fire bomb us at should we cause trouble. Any one of these groups would put us to a test as a party, and it looks like they may be interconnected. It's probably not in our best interest to divide our strength at this time.

Beri turns to address Roy
Roy, you are not our slave, but I am sure you can appreciate that we are in a lot of trouble for rescuing you right now and are hesitant to make any quick decisions. With a warm smile Beri adds in a playful tone As long as you aren't the doppelganger or a vampire we would appreciate it if you would consider staying as our guest while we look into the events of last night. It shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 16 of 20 Spells
Sunday February 7th, 2010 5:06:44 PM

We did not mean to offend you Roy. I do agree with Beri, you would be safer if you stayed with us, at least until we know why you were kidnapped. I also hope you can understand why our group is being overly cautious right now. If you give me your word that you will repay me, if and when you can, I will cover your cost including that set of clothing over there.

ooc: We never decided if these costs are entirely out of the Group Loot, or if the new players who were not involved in the last battle and the other captives will be expected to chip in their share. I don't have any real preference since the captives, while not part of the last battle also didn't get any say in their release (not that I think it would have affected the outcome). I deducted everything from the group loot when we paid. If we opt for reimbursement then I will spot Roy and Appoline.

Calming down a bit, Roy says, "I appreciate your offer, but I'm leaving today. They can come with me or not, no skin off my nose."

Cesar - HP 29/29, AC 19(20)
Monday February 8th, 2010 3:28:16 AM

Quite confused by the fast moving events, Cesar decides to follow the rest of the group: he has just enough money (which he will repay as soon as he earns some!) to pay for Whiner's stabling and no kind of income. Plus while in this town he was kidnapped and stuffed into a locker as a midnight snack for someone... or something! And added to that the group just payed a large sum of gold pieces for his freedom and his parents taught him never to leave a debt unrepayed!

"I'm with you people! I wish to find the kidnappers and teach them a lesson or two... AND give you back all the money you forked out for me in this last day! Please let me know as soon as we are ready to leave, so I can go and fetch my horse..."

Xeron AC AC16 HP 13/13

Xeron shakes his head "Let the man go. Let him take Yosef and his family if they want to go. After all, we did not force the bandit halfling to stay after they tried to kill us. Let them go. "

He goes toward the woman "I am not sure what you mean with the circle but you are free to go to. Nod once if you can write. I am sure we can find parchment and ink in the shop. Nod again if you want to leave alone and nod twice if you want an escort to whereever you are going. "

"Xeron right!" Maikill says matter-of-factly. "They go if want, we no tell them."

"I think we go soon, we need get ready."

Ransy says: I can accompany her, if she needs anybody with fighting skills.
He looks at her friendly but also uses his detect evil ability to check her out.
he puts on his armor and
he also says: if we choose to remain together and go to hook city, how long will it take to get back here? I don't know what business you have in Hook City, but if we spend more than a day, the trace of the kidnappers will grow cold, I think.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:1/12
Monday February 8th, 2010 7:35:43 PM

Valla grunts at the mans response; and gives a wiry smiles; You go, be sure you keep your word. Especially if given to a cleric of Gargul. The horned one has the gods blessing, and surly he would not let a promise to one of his hand go unfullfilled. Let Yosef and his family go too. Probably best for them anyhow. With that Valla turns his back on the man, not caring of his outcome.

I think we all should go into Hook City as well. No reason to split the group up, if we do encounter one of our villians, we'd probably need our entire band together. He turns and looks to Jacob, When are we leaving sir? After the reply from Jacob, Valla begins gathering his things. Money purse, staff, makes sure his sword is secure and his spell book is in its place inside his pack. Im ready

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7
Monday February 8th, 2010 7:40:28 PM

Beri turns to Ransy
I wouldn't worry too much about that. Hook City is an expensive place to stay, but even if we did find ourselves there I doubt you would lose your chance at your kidnappers. The ware house owners no doubt are not about to pack up and move, and anyone in need of the warehouse's services probably is both a local resident and has no competitor they can switch to.

Grendel (Jay) AC:17/10/17 HP 8/13

Grendel also gets packed up for the day. She encourages Yosef and his family to go with the woodsman and make a life away from the dangers of Mud Town. Movin' right along
Foot-loose and fancy free.
Gettin' there is half the fun;
Come share it with me.
- Kenny Ascher & Paul Williams

With no fanfare, due to Valla's accusations against Roy, the ranger gathers up what he has--which is nothing, not even the 1gp travelers outfit he asked to borrow but was rebuked for and made to feel even lowlier than the beggar's garb he currently wore, and leaves. Yosef quickly gathers up what belongs to him, says a rushed goodbye and a heartfelt thank you and takes off after Roy. Arriet gathers up her kids and what little is left of her life and leaves also--she does not utter a word of thanks--the children stare blankly at the group as they leave.

The mute girl looks to Xeron and then the rest of the group, gives a slight bow, then a wave as she too leaves, heading towards the South of Mudtown in the opposite direction of Roy and the others.

"Alrighty then, let's be off!" Exclaims Jacob as he grabs up his heavy pack and heads out the door. Quick on his heels the rest of the group follows Jacob North toward Hire Road, which is the main road that leads in and out of Mudtown and ends on this side of the road at the Hook City gate. Cesar however quickly goes and grabs his horse from the stables, spending the 3gp that Grendel slipped him, to secure his his horse and tack. He manages to catch up to the group just as Jacob is taking a right when reaching Hire Road and heading to the gate, the Wall of Tears looms before the group and gets larger and larger until they almost reach the gate itself.

At the Gate, the guards clear the entranceway for the Children of Chaos like they would do for a high city official. "Give em what fer!" calls one guard as the heroes pass through the clean marble and granite gateway and into the dirty unpaved shanty town of MudTown.

Mud Town hadn't changed much since the last time the COC have passed through. Rough and crude, it is made up of people waiting to get into Hook City and those who aren't prestigious (or rich) enough to get through the gates. Safety here is dependant upon alert friends who are good with their weapons. Still, the Children of Chaos have no trouble walking the main muddy road west with their escort of city guard to keep the rabble back. Many stop and watch, some nodding in acknowledgement that the heroes are known even here, but the obvious displays of enthusiasm and wealth are not around. It is too easy from openly showing favoritism or a possession to become an enemy ... or a target.

"Look see there Edgar, thems the Children of Chaos, they is." Says one onlooker to his friend, both of whom are near the group.
"You sure, Twitch? They do look refined in their mithral armors and fancy weapons, but what is that bloke carrying?"
"You's talking about that stone ball? I's heard tell it's a lich's head they's keep in there. They only releases it in battle to devour the souls of those they done kilt."
"Get out, really?"
"Really, really."
"I don't believe it, I've heard they're a force for good, most likely paladin's the lot of them."
"Ach, don't believe all's ya hear me friend, them there...ohh, don't look, look away, if you meet their eyes, they'll turn you impotent."
"Already too late for you, Twitch."
"Wha?"

Once the Children of Chaos had made their way through Mudtown, Jacob and the rest that were waiting swarmed back towards the gate and the awaiting guards. Jacob made his way this way and that until he got to the guard and showed him his ticket.

"Ah, well good sir, tis' fortunate you showed up so early, you're one of the first ones. Please head this way, oh, your guards won't be allowed into the city, sorry sir." The guard, like the rest at the gate looked more muscular than any the group had ever seen in the streets of Mudtown--he was definitely not to be messed with.

"Your pardon, your, uh, guard. I have a Writ of Conveyance which allows me the protection of my guards in the city proper." Handing the Writ to the guard to have it verified, the guard quirks an eyebrow and says apologetically, "My mistake sir, you are correct. Please, you and your guards follow me." Handing the Writ back to Jacob, you all head through the gate into the barbican that seperates Mudtown from the city proper and is where your goods are inspected and assigned a chit value. When Jacob offers up his locked stongbox and tells the inspector that he cannot open it and it's to be delivered to Alistair Tems, a wizard in the city, the inspector half apologizes and informs Jacob that if such were the case and with his Writ of Conveyance, he did not need to wait the several days he did, he could have come right in. The inspector also tells Jacob that he is allowed one free trading day within the city--if he wishes to stay longer, he must recheck in at the gate everyday.

Ushered through the well lit barbican, one could not help but notice the plethora of murder holes that lined the ceiling of the place. If someone got out of turn, or started a fight, they were sure to meet their end as a hundred or so arrows from above could fill the place most immediately. Once through the inner gate of the barbican, Jacob and the group came into sunshine--it was almost overbearing in it's brightness. Months, and even years for some, in the streets of Mudtown had weakened the eyes tolerance to bright light, and here in Hook City it was bright--there wasn't a cloud in the sky over it.

Northhook City, also known as Soldier's City, is where those who work in the military, are involved in the offices of the city, labor for the good of the city, and deal with the outside, reside and work. It is considered the lessor of the two cities; however, saying that any part of Hook City is not opulent is definitely a misnomer. The most notable feature of Northhook is the Marble Causeway--a wide road made of worked marble and lined by statues on both sides. This road runs through the middle of Soldier's City from the gates at Mudtown to The Bridge. Here stands Jacob and the group, the aforementioned rubbing his eyes and murmurring about spending too much time in Mudtown. All around you is beauty, from the white plaster walls of the buildings, to the amazing floating hooks that suspend the market bridge.

"See there, way up there?" Jacob says, playing the tour guide, "The Bridge hangs from four giant hooks that hang in mid air. No one knows where they or the bridge came from; both are magical in nature, however the rigging holding the bridge to the hooks is not. This non-magical rigging must be constantly maintained. Over the years the rigging has been reinforced and strengthened so many times that it has become a deadly maze of tangles. A special group of men have been trained to work within this maze. They are called Climbers. These men climb like spiders through the maze of linking chains, wire, rope, and other strangeness--it's an amazing feat to behold." Pointing to a point closer, "But our destination lies closer, come, let's get to Alistairs quickly, I remember he had the best tea I've ever had and I could surely use a cup or two to wash away the Mudtown gloom."

Walking east down the marble causeway, the group notes how clean the city is, how wonderful it smells. There is that certain smell in the air, like fresh linen warming under the sun. Hints of cinnamon from a nearby shop permeate the senses then give way to a robust and pungent smell of sausage cooking on the grill for morning breakfast, but soon that smell ebbs away and once again replaced by that fresh clean smell. The weather, the buildings, even the people looked...perfect. All well dressed--no beggars or stragglers on the side of causeway begging for alms. It was the complete opposite of Mudtown.

Turning down a wide street and then down a narrower street, then continuing on for what seemed a mile, Jacob looked here and there for Alistairs home, but seemed to be having a hard time finding it. "The thing about these buildings, well, they all look the same, not like those in labor town, just down the street." Still looking as he walks down one street to another, Jacob continues his thoughts about labor town, "At the edge of town, what is the eastern edge of North hook, is labor town. Prior to the Great Migration, the people there used to farm the sea of grass from the Sargrass plains. Now that North hook is almost surrounded by water, they harvest the bounty of the sea at their doorsteps. Their buildings are covered in the same plaster as these here, but they've taken to coloring them beautiful shades of orange, blue and more. I think they do it to match their sails, I dunno, but it's very beautiful. But I've always wondered," Jacob says as he scratches his chin while he continues his search and rambles on, "Since it takes about 10,000gp to stay here as a citizen, or to work for a citizen, how do they get to stay inside the city? They work for themselves, but I doubt there is that much gold in fish. They must get a special dispensation from the Council of Four. It's not like there's enough magic in this city to feed everyone, and people have to eat. Yes, that must be it."

Jacob continued his search getting ever nearer and nearer to his destination, or so he said, but during that time Valla happened to notice a square tower nearby was for sale. It seemed in good repair, it's white plaster walls were none worse for wear, but what was very odd about it was that the for sale sign stated a sale price of only 1gp. Before Valla could inquire more about it, Jacob called out to the rest and ran down the street, the group quickly followed behind. About a block away he stopped in front of a non-descript two story building. "This is it, this is Alistairs place. He doesn't like to live on the South hook side of town because he said he was visited all the time by the other mages in town--and when visitors come by, they expect to be fed." Knocking on the door, it was soon answered by a man in his late seventies. He looked the stereotypical wizard, less the dunce cap.

"My word, is that you Jacob?"
Bowing as was appropriate, "Yes Magister Alistair, I hope I find you in good health today?"
"Good health? well, my back has been acting up... ahh, but you don't want to hear that. Come in come in."
"It is good to see you my friend, it has been some time, yes Magister?"
"Please, call me Alistair."
"Yes, Magister Alistair."

Sighing, the old man showed the group in, he didn't seem to be curious about the rest in the group, in fact he didn't address them at all. Inside the parlor, the furnishings were adequate, they were neither spartan or ostentacious. There was a faint scent of incense in the air, perhaps to cover the old man smell that was common in such abodes. Jacob immediately took off his backpack and produced the large strongbox. Gingerly he placed it on a table that Alistair motioned too and then stepped back.

"Hmpf, from your father eh? Looks important if he had to use this and keep it locked even from his son."
"His business is his own, you know how tight-lipped he is about that."
Alistair gave Jacob a strange look, then turned his attention back to the box. "Well, let's see what we can see."

Magister Alistair reached in his robes and produced a pair of eyeglasses and firmly affixed them to their proper position on his nose. Looking at the case, he pushed several spots and then the locking clasp popped open. Opening it he took a sudden gasp, then looked up and then took another gasp and a step back--his words were careful and measured.

"Who are you and what have you done with Jacob?"

Thinking he was addressing the group, Jacob speaks up first,"What, what do you mean? I am Jacob, what is this Magister Alistair? What game are you playing at?"
"Game? What game? You tell me what game this is."

Alistair turns the strongbox around for everyone to see--inside are several brains.

"You are not Jacob. I would hazard a guess, based on my considerable knowledge and the ability to truly see what things are with the use of these eyeglasses, that you are a doppelganger."

"A, a what? A doppelganger, surely you jest, I am Jacob, Jacob the lesser because, because I, I..." Jacob clutched at his head and started to moan in pain, "No, I am Jacob, I am not a monster. I have three sisters, my mother's name is...no, no..." Falling to his knees, Jacob begins to transform into a creature that looks more or less humanoid, but slender and frail, with gangly limbs and half-formed features. The flesh is pale and hairless--its large, bulging eyes are yellow with slitted pupils. It cowers away from Alistair and the group, "Please, please do not kill me, I do not know what has happened to me."

Alistair murmurs, "Interesting."

Cesar - HP 29/29, AC 19(20)
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 6:20:10 AM

Cesar stares astonished at Jacob's transformation, while quickly unsheathing his sword.

"Doppleganger? As in brain-eating-doppleganger? What the heck is happening here!"

Xeron AC AC16 HP 13/13
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 8:47:55 AM

Xeron watches the girl leaves and gives her a shy goodbye wave and shrugs. He goes standing against his wall, by the window, all the previous expressions gone from his face.

Xeron watches the CoC procession passing by "Pompous heroes who don't give two copper pieces about the misery in Mud Town ... "

He enters Hook City against his wish, having no desire to be associated with this place. He looks at the beautiful marble and houses and feels the magical sun and smells the delicious breakfast smells. "I hate this place. We are starving and dying in the mud while these pigs could not care about us. My mother died of abuse and begging in the muddy streets while these obnoxious pigs were gorging themselves in luxuries. "

His face does not betray his thoughts and he goes along with the group hoping to be out of here as soon as possible. "I do not belong here. These people do not need my help. Mud Town does ...

He nods at Magister Allistair, positioning himself in a room in a way that his back is not to a window or a door. When Jacob turns into a dopledanger, Xeron reaction is real fast. He grabs the head of the creature and places his dagger on the throat. "Now this is simple. Speak or die. Tell us everything you knows and tell the truth or your head will be separated from your body. Grendel, Valla, check if he is lying. If he does, I'll start the cutting."

He waits for the reaction of the monster and of the group but his blue eyes are full of blue steel determination. He is fully ready to execute the creature if needed. And yes, spilling blood in a rich magician place is an added bonus.

Maikill HP 24/28, AC17
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 10:04:50 AM

The trek into Hook City from Mudtown has left Maikill's head spinning. Never has he seen such contrast. Only his mother's kitchen could match Hook City for cleanliness and order. And the heroes, what have they done to deserve such respect. He hopes to find out one day.

In Alistair's Maikill was in a fog, overcome by the morning events. When Jacob turns into a monster and Xeron makes a move on him Maikill's instincts come into play. Whipping his axe off his back he moves within striking distance of what used to be Jacob.

"Careful Xeron. What I do Grendel? Kill it?"

Ransy AC 19/11/18 Hp 23/23  d20+7=22 ;
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 10:07:52 AM

Ransy remains taciturn, out of respect for the apparent authority of Magister Alistair. However, he steps toward the doorway, apparently to prevent anyone from fleeing the room. He puts his hand on his swordhilt, but does not draw it yet.

Tightlipped, he thinks (and perhaps the dopplegaenger/Jacob can hear): mm, you may not know that you're a doppleganger, and perhaps someone has misled you into thinking that you're really Jacob. But it is still a crime to steal another's identity.

Ransy uses sense motive to judge the authenticity of Jacob's protests: 22 sense motive.

Grendel (Jay) AC:17/10/17 HP 8/13
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 11:06:52 AM

Grendel is astonished as she enters Hook City. Finally... she thinks to herself. As Jacob turns into a doppleganger she is torn. On one hand she is hired as his protector but on the other, he is a potential threat to Magister Alistair.

Grendel holds up a hand toward Maikill for him to 'hold on' for now as she positions herself to defend the Magister. "Sir, please offer us some instruction. Is this doppleganger a threat or something to be studied?"

Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 16 of 20 Spells
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 8:10:23 PM

Pondering how best to appproach Alistair about Sargrass Plains and Steel Grass Armor, Bosk is taken completely off guard by the situation. Immediately taking a defensive position and drawing his weapon he tries to piece together what happened. What is going on here? A Doppleganger? Why does he not seem to know what he is, and why would he give himself away by showing us the brains? Has he been the Doppleganger all along, or did he switch places with Jacob while we were away. Thinking back to earlier in the morning he remembers looking at the mole and not seeing any unusual activity, nothing like the way it had acted around Yosef. At least he doesn't have a parasite controlling him, but I suppose he could still be under a spell of some sort. Perhaps the mole was still full from last night, and that was why it did not react. The taur shakes his head. That doesn't make any sense. If he was being controlled, why would he expose himself and then not attack us. Something doesn't add up.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7
Tuesday February 9th, 2010 9:25:56 PM

Beriothian pulls out his cross bow and aims it in the general direction of both Xeron and the doppelganger. Something about this whole situation isn't sitting right with Beri.

Take it easy every one. We don't know that Jacob was aware of what was in the box, from the looks of it he's not even aware of who... err what he is. If you spill too much of his blood any information he has will be lost. Besides, you yourself stood guard at the house, as did the rest of us. It would have been quite the feat for him to have snuck out and killed people and snuck back in undetected unless there was powerful magic involved.

Suddenly Beri realizes that is out of place!
Alistair, you don't look phased by what just happened. In fact it appears that this... man... not knowing what's going on makes perfect sense to you. Can you shed any light on this for us?
