Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Tuesday September 1st, 2009 11:56:34 PM

Xeron points to Maikill "You, shut up! You are not welcome here. Padre and Bosk might trust you but as far as I know you are just a decoy of that group. I would not be surprised if you will kill us while we sleep."

He does his best to contain his smile and winks at Padre when Katrin insults him " mud scum . The memories come back. The name calling, the abuse. The men forcing him to watch as they take advantage of his mother and the poor woman does not understand why they are hurting her that way. His face dragged in the mud. The older boys forcing him to eat mud and worse.

He sees the woman who gave him her ring saying "stop .. stop " but he brushes away the vision.

The dagger reappears and he starts walking toward Katrin. The look on his face is obvious. He is going for the kill.

Things are starting to get out of hand...Xeron's intentions are not being understood by the slow one and we are loosing the cooperation of the girl...

Sixtus strides up to the rogue who is approaching the female caster. He reaches out and puts a hand on the black-haired conniver's shoulder.

"Hold Xeron! Seriously! You can't just cut her throat now. She could be use as a bargaining chip or ransom. I do not think that selling her as a bed-warmer would be the wisest idea either...she has too many tricks up her sleeve."

Sixtus tries to spin the rogue around and already has a faint smirk molded to the corner of his mouth. He suppresses a chuckle and shakes his head slightly as the blue eyes of Xeron meets his. Turning to address the rest of the group and paying little attention to the mage who si tied up;

"I agree, we need to do something. We either ask Venbolio for permission to leave or we just do it. Sitting here and waiting gives us little advantage and that is exactly what we are going to need with the numbers on their side."
--------------------------------
ooc: ugh, getting adjusted to the school schedule is proving to be problematic, especially since there is a filter at the school I am working at, which blocks the Wold. I will try to get something consistent back again.

Alain, you are welcome...it seems as though I missed just how gritty Xeron can be during my posts for him ;)

Maikill
Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 10:58:23 AM

The huge half-orc seems to puff up even larger as his chest expands and he stretches to his full height. With a deadly gaze he stares down the Xeron advancing on the bound woman.

"No kill in sleep. Come kill orc raiders, make mistake. Now I watch you. Maybe fight you, you choose. I no coward, no kill women."

OOC: if this character doesn't work out don't worry, I will bring a different one later. Can't really back him down now.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6
Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 12:58:28 PM

Valla turns to the halforc Maikill, He begins whispering into the warriors ear Xeron is only bluffing, scaring the girl, maybe a bit to much, but its only an act. Calm down.

The wizard turns to the rest of the group and speaks loudly, I'll go talk to Penn. We need to do something Standing is useless. Maybe we could Leave Lenwe, Naru and Ahriman guarding the camp, and meet the band. With a sigh Valla begins again, Or send out scouts.... And amubush the band here. I think that to be our best option. Valla waits for a reply before running to Penn.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 2:20:05 PM

Xeron's dagger is going for the throat of Karin when Sixtus stops him. The rogue starts resisting but slowly breathes slower and calm down. He blinks his eyes a few times and grabs the ring around his neck, holding it very, very tight.

"I'm ok, I'm ok."

He takes a few deep breaths and points to Katrin "Your life is mine and you are as good as dead as far as I am concerned. You better hope that Padre is around to keep you alive. You are a thief and a criminal and I will show Mud Town who you are. "

He goes next to the girl and cuts a lot of strand of her hair, completely ruining her look. "This is just the beginning. You better hope your coward friends find a way to my heart. "

He looks towards the group. "I think before we decide to do anything we need some reconaissance. We need to get a sense of who we are fighting before we decide where we are figthing them."

He turns toward Sixtus "Padre, I am asking you to reconsider saving these people. As they have shown, they will come back to kill us. These are not prisoners of war, these are criminals with evil intentions. Please let me finish them. I promise they will not suffer, not even the girl. They are 10 of them and these 3 makes 13. There are 7 of us, Ariman being too buzy working on his make up. We need to adjust the odds. Say the words padre and they will be down to 10. "

The rogue waits, willing to give back the lives that the cleric owes him.

==================================================================================
OOC: Thanks Drew. Think of Xeron has being a lot like Wolverine of X-men fame. He will protect the group but will kill if necessary. He does not mind doing the dirty work. Xeron is just way darker given his background.
OOC2: Regarding strategy, I think we should get a sense of who we are facing before we attack. I am also concerned about leaving Peen unattended.
OOC3: Regarding the prisoners, I know we are good guys but this is not governed by the Geneva convention. This is medieval time violence where the Church used to burn people on the stake because of rumors of witchcraft. I am not sure that 21st century enlightment makes much sense.
OOC4: Maikill, Xeron is just not the trusting type and find your arrival "too convenient". Your sense of fighting honor is also lost on him.

Finally some one agrees with me... Valla thinks to himself as Xeron is talking, Thats why I propose scouts, Xeron. That way we will know what were up aganist, and have time to prepare an ambush...

"Filthy churl!" Katrin says, then spits at Xeron after he cuts her hair, just missing him.

Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 6
Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 5:23:46 PM

Watching the situation escalate before her eyes, Sanji can feel that things are becoming out of control. I'm going with you to talk to Mr. Penn about all this to see if he has any advice for us. Let's do that now. If he wants us to stay with the caravan, then that's the end of it. We will have to stay and wait for the inevitable attack from their companions. At least at this point we know that it will be coming and can be ready for it. If Mr. Penn approves of a more proactive response, then I agree with Valla and Xeron. We need to know what we're up against and should at least send out some scouts. I will volunteer for that duty.

Before moving toward Mr. Penn's tent, Sanji steps between Xeron and Maikill. Facing Xeron, she raises an eyebrow. You'd certainly be within your rights to kill her. I've always felt that if somebody tries to kill... well.. you try and kill them right back. Sanji stumbles over the words as she tries to decide if she believes it herself. The point is you should be directing your anger at that wretch on the ground. Not at Mailkill. I'm not saying I totally trust him because I've just met him. But, he's only shown aggression toward our enemies, or when he thinks we are doing something dishonourable. I say leave him be, at least for the time being. And you, She turns to face Maikill. There's no need for a fight just yet. Save your anger for when you need it.

Unsure if she has made any difference in the current situation, Sanji walks toward Mr. Penn's tent. Let's get this over with Valla. I hope he's nicer than I am in the morning. As she passes Padre she whispers in his ear, Perhaps we should send our new "friend" with someone else to dump the bodies we already have. That way, if things get out of hand and we have to dispatch the captives he won't be around. Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. Just as she turns away, a thought seems to return to the surface of her consciousness. She turns back to Padre with a dire look on her face. I do think Xeron's is right, though. It would be best to get rid of them.[b]

With that she leaves the cleric in her wake and motions for Valla to come with her to Mr. Penn's tent. She pulls back to tent flap slightly and peers inside. [b]Excuse me Mr. Penn. I'm sorry to wake you but we have a bit of a situation and need to run a couple of things by you.

Venbolio Penn - DM Jim

Stirring under his fluffy comforter, Penn wearily says, "Huh, what? Muffins and jam? Yes, please, thank you."

padre Sixtus Torquemada [drew]
Thursday September 3rd, 2009 6:53:21 AM

Frustration begins to mount as the group begins to become divided again; the inside of his lip must be raw and bloody from the continuous chewing. His boiling point is apparently being reached, judging by the look of restlessness and irritation in his eyes. In his usual quirky manner, Sixtus ruffles his hood back and forth several times before casting it back and off of his tuff of disheveled hair with force. he takes a moment to look skyward and allow the rain to cool his face.

"Fine. We need a definitive plan and everyone, including myself, just keeps dancing around it. Valla and Sanji, when you are done with Penn, go and start your scouting. Xeron, you are to go with them too. If any of you can EASILY take one or two of them out if they are on their way then that is what you are to do. IF you see anyone with the IronBand emblem on them and they are alone, you take them out. Bosk, Maikill, Lenwe and myself will stay here and watch Ariman pout and Naru play with her hair. There will be more bodies to be disposed of, so there is no need to split us up more until this is finished."

Sixtus intentionally looks each of the other mercenaries in the eye, ensuring that they understand his intentions of these plans seeing fruition. They are not inquisitive or open for debate anymore, they are pale green orbs of definitiveness.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Thursday September 3rd, 2009 8:44:17 AM

Xeron shakes his head as Sixtus speaks but says nothing until the cleric is done talking. "All right Padre, we will do it your way this time. I am willing to give it your definition of Good a shot. But I am warning you, if any of these three, " pointing to the 3 prisoners, "come back to attack us, I will finish anyone who attacks us. And if they end up killing any of us, you will have lost any moral authority you think you have. And don't blame it on your silly god saying it was their time to go."

Visibly upset by the decision to leave potential deadly ennemies alive, he walks toward Sanji and Valla " All right, let's go see if we can get some information to allow us to spend another day alive in the crappy place "

He will follow the rogue and the wizard out of the camp.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 14/10/10 HP 14 of 14
Thursday September 3rd, 2009 8:47:00 AM

The horned cleric stares at the scene around him in complete amazement, unable to understand how quickly the situation got out of control. Xeron threatening the captive Katrin, Maikill threatening Xeron, and everyone taking the lead in a different direction. This is not the image he wants their captives to be seeing, especially if they are to let them live to tell the story.

Hearing Sixtus speak he makes up his mind, it is as good a plan as any at this point.
Sixtus is right, the more stealthy of us should disguise ourselves with the helmets and head out and to look for advance scouts and see if they can learn anything in town. The rest of us will guard the camp. When you return say I am (your name), a friend of Penn. That way we will know who you are. With the enemy able to change shape, we cannot be too careful.

Bosk then speaks to everyone individually and quiet enough that no one else can hear, and informs them to scratch their left ear when they say this. That will be the real test. The password is just to throw others off, and incase someone else is already listening or incase Katrin finds a way to inform someone.

ooc: Sorry about the late post. I have been traveling a lot as I start class on Tuesday and will no longer have a life. No one responded to my previous email, I will be out of town Friday-Monday and cannot guarantee I can post Tuesday. If someone could sub for me, I would appreciate it. Hearing Padre announce his plan, and effectivly take up a leadership role, valla smiles I knew you'd come to your senses cleric With that Valla goes to Penns tent, Mr. Penn, Sanji, Xeron and myself are going to see if anymore of this band is coming to attack us. Leaving Padre, Bosk, Lenwe, Naru and Ahriman to look over the camp. We will be back shortly. Without waiting for a reply, Valla motions to the two rogues, Lets be off then

Walking out of the camp, toward where Katrin said the band's camp is, Valla eyes everyone he sees* looking for the Iron Band emblem. Sanji, Xeron, flank the camp from both side, see what you can, listen hard as well.

If he doesn't see anyone on his way to the camp, Valla will move as quietly as possibly just outside their camp**, but not too close to be seen, trying to use anything possible to cover his scarred form***. Perking his sensitve ears in a fashion that seems much like a listening canine.****

The scouting mission - DM Jim
Thursday September 3rd, 2009 12:20:11 PM

As the scouting group leaves, they find a curious set of boot prints leading away from Penn's encampment, heading north, the same direction the halfling who was slicing and dicing Bosk, was heading in. Following them, since they lead in the same direction, The nail-studded boot prints will lead the party to the northern end of Mudtown--a more dangerous section, as this end is the furthest away from the city walls (and, thus, the prying eyes of the city guard). This part of Mudtown is dotted with encampments--there aren't even any semi-permanent lean-tos, shanties or yurts here...it's all tents or simply bedrolls around various campfires. At this time of the morning, there isn't much stirring.

The encampment that the trail leads to is surrounded by trees that ring a natural bowl-like depression that is some three hundred feet or so in diameter. The ground gets progressively softer the farther into the "bowl" one goes. However, some 50ft away near the main road into Mudtown is a large tent with a small wooden pen attached to it that holds aloft a brightly colored sign that proudly states:

IRONBAND GUARD CO.

Don't Mess with the Rest
Get the Best!

Best Rates in Town
Satisfaction Guaranteed!

The tent in question looks to be the Ironbands storefront, it's flap is currently closed and a small sign hangs on it stating they will open at 7am, which is an hour from now. Their main encampment must be through the tree's, but at this distance, it is unknown.

If you want to start being sneaky, looking for stuff (spot) and listening about, now is the time to do it :)

The towering minotaur looks down at the diminutive captive. "All in due time. We are not about to lower the number of people guarding this camp any further then they currently are, you never know when a band of goblins may attack." Bosk draws out the word goblins in a joking manner. I must apologize for our party on the behalf of Xeron, he tends to be a kill first and ask questions later kind of guy. However, he would not do you serious harm and risk the Padre and I coming after him. I am sure your band would do the same or worse to us if the tables were turned. Also to be honest, we don't know what to do with you. If we caught you lying, we would kill you and the matter would be over. We don't fully trust the guards, we have no way of knowing if it is one of your friends in disguise. We also do not want to let you go, only to have you attack us again tonight. Our current plan is to let you go after our job is complete and we are paid. If you have a suggestion or way to prove your trust, we will listen. However, you are our prisoner and tried to kill us, so don't assume we will believe you or trust you.

ooc: Do we know what the guards response would be? Will they punish the criminals if we do the dirty work of catching them, or would we be taking our chances?

DM JIM -- You're new to the area, but most people shun the Guard cause they're like the police, no one wants them around until they're in trouble

As they walk towards the Ironband, Xeron tells Valla and Sanji with a lot of anger in his voice "I am not sure how you feel about the two clerics but I think they are naive to the point of endangering us. They have a code of honor which would make sense at a reunion of the Knights of the Round Table but not in MudTown. May be I am too corrupted to see good but all I have seen is evil in different sahdes all my life, except one time but I doubt that being kind and offering your other cheek when someone slaps you will leads to a long and prosperous life. And I am seriously quite concerned about how quickly they accepted the dumb orc. His sense of honor is even more insane of the two religious nuts. Anyway, time to go to work "

Shaking his head with conviction, Sixtus silently scolds the captive. He begins to stride back and forth, watching her and wondering where the audacity has come from. Had something been said to reduce the scariness of the situation? Had something been done to undermine the realness of a potential loss of life for the woman?

Sixtus listens to Bosk's words with intent as the questions continue to swirl like a waterspout through the slosh of his head. So many things have happened in the past day that he is having entirely too many mixed emotions about entirely too many situations.

Squatting back down in from af Katrin, Sixtus grabs her chin and lifts her head high enough to be eye-to-eye. "Are you so sure that you are safe enough to make demands? Do not mistake our tolerance and willingness to talk first as weakness. Do I need to show you that we are indeed deadly serious? If so, say the word. I will show you blood and death and force you to hear the sound of a soul leaving the body."

Standing up, the cleric turns to face the half-orc stranger, his face as solid as a mountain.
"Maikill. You stay here. Your mother's killer will be here soon enough and you will be able to avenger her then. One wrong move before that and you will have to deal with me. Your mother's killer may in fact be coming here for a fight and you will give him that fight."

Following the trail was easy given the muddy ground. It will not remain so for long when mudtown begins to creep to life. Sanji is a little surprised that the person they were following left such a clear trail. They were either really scared, stupit, or just didn't care. The sceen seems rather inviting as the trio approach the Iron Band's camp. The welcoming sign on top of the tent is making boasts that seem almost too good to be true.

Listening to Xeron voice his opinion as they reach camp brings Sanji's thoughts back to the surface. The clerics might not seem the brightest, but they do seem to be good at heart. I do agree, though, that their goodness might well come back to bite them in the end. And I think Maikill is still a mystery. He seems to have some wierd sence of honor. Maybe I need to try learning a little more broken common.

I'm going to make a circle of the camp while you are going toward the tent. Keep your eyes and ears open. If something goes wrong, shout or something and I'll come running. If you're ambushed, high-tail it back to our camp. We'll be no match for all of them. I'll meet back up with you 50 feet up the trail from this encampment.

Sanji makes her way to the trees trying to circle the trying to do her best deer impression as she adopts a stealthy forward motion. I think the cleris have a sense of 'leadership' about them. Padre means good for the group as a whole seems, although I agree. We should have killed all the captives, after questioning of course. I havn't been in Mudtown long, but with that stupid little gnome and his damn half-breed friends... As for the orc... As a race, I hate them, with much passion. BUT, as for Maikill, he is in the responseability of Padre and Bosk for all I care. I think his brute strength will help in the long run, but only after we see how his mind and personality fits... The code of honor of all three isn't going to mesh with the wretched place...

Valla nods as Xeron and Sanji spell out their plans. While Xeron approaches the tent, Valla will go with Sanji, although the opposite way around the depression. Katrin casts an evil eye at her captors--not the spell, but the look, as she awaits her and her companions fate.

At the Ironbands camp, Xeron approaches the tent to find that it is indeed a tent, and an empty one at that. Peeking inside he can see a table and a few chairs, but that is all.

Both Sanji and Valla make there way as quietly as they can into the copse of trees and spot a lone figure not 20' in that has his back to them muttering, "Where in the three hells are they?" The trail from their camp leads directly in this man's direction. With a sucking sound as Sanji pulls free a boot from the mud, the man turns and looks intently in the duo's direction. Sanji successfully hides, but Valla the quiet one freezes in place and locks eye's with the man. "Who are you and state your business!"

There is something awry in Sixtus' eyes as the female captive decides that she is in no position to make demands. Perhaps it is a taste of power? He stands tall in front of her, looks down upon the top of her head and nods slowly.

"Wise decision, Katrin. Your cooperation will yield you a better fate than any who chose not to. I am affraid, however, that the City Guard will not be part of the picture. It seems to me that any criminal who asks to be handed over to the authorities is probably most likely in bed with the authorities."

Then, wanting to be sure to error on the side of caution, the cleric strides around behind the captives to feel the ropes and the knots to ensure that they have not come loose by any means. After checking the ropes, Sixtus strides over to Bosk and talks quietly to the pillar of blondeness.

"Bosk, I have no idea what to do with these three. KIlling them, as some have pointed out, would be the safest bet but I believe Gargul would have qualms with that. The question that continues to nag at me is, had we just yelled at them initially, would they have run or would they have drawn steel on us first? that seems to be the key...for me anyways."

As he talks, Sixtus allows his pale green eyes to scan the camp and continue maintaining a vigilant outlook for danger*.

About prisoners: If this was the woods and no "law" was present to turn them over too, then what happens to them is fair game, because they did try to kill you after you defended the camp--they could have run away.

However, since the "law" is nearby and they are in no position to attack you, being your bound captives, killing them would be a bad thing. The "law" might not care, but your alignments do.

A small smile creeps across the minotaur's face as he watches Maikill finish his drink. I think it is safe to assume he is not a disciplined warrior. Skilled, but not a stand at attention kind of mindless army grunt. No, he is not one of them...

His attention abruptly shifts as he listens to Sixtus speak.

Raising his eyebrows slightly, the horned cleric responds, somewhat bemused at what different perceptions the two of them have of their lord.
[b]I don't believe that the God of Life and Death, a deity dedicated to balance, would think twice about the lives of these. They take life upon a whim and likewise shall lose it upon a whim. Their lives are forfeit for the crimes they have committed, and by fighting without honor and in disguise for a dishonorable purpose means that they are not entitled to any of the standards of chiveraly that most men feel bound to uphold. I realize that you are a messenger of the word, where as it is my destiny to be a restorer of the balance in Wold. As such, we are bound by parallel, but different codes. You are Gargul's Right Hand, and I am his Left. Where you inform others of Gargul's law, I restore the balance when it is broken. I may have challenged the orc for his audacity earlier, but I cannot bring myself to kill those who are unconscious and bound this long after a battle, particularly those who cooperated with us afterwards and whom we said we would spare.

When the others return, we will bring them to the authorities. If they say to kill them, then we are upholding a just law, and there is no dishonor in our actions. If the guards take them o

The drums of her heart keep echoing as the unknown person challenges Valla. We need to give Valla some time to talk his way out of this. She continues to make her way around the back of the new adversary looking for an opportunity to strike silently. A look, the mixture of maniacal satisfaction and of confirmation to Katrin's question smears the well tanned face of the cleric. He nods a couple of times and waggles his pointer finger at her as well.

"Ahh HA! You see, perhaps I am just passively killing these criminals. You just happen to be smart enough to cooperate unlike this half-orc here. All tied up, completely defeated and outnumbered, and he still was issuing death sentences on our heads. Who knows, perhaps he will fall over, dead, right next to you."

Sixtus looks up at the horned one out of the corner of his eye, "I try to preach the word a bit but when push comes to shove, I definitely kill for the balance."

Then the avenging slow-talker speaks up and states something quite profound.

"That is an interesting observation, Maikill. Why is that Katrin? How is it that you claim no orcs or half-orcs are part of the IronBand yet you are sitting next to a half-orc who is part of the IronBand as we speak?"

With reluctance, Sanji wipes the blood off of her blade and slides it home. Very well. Let's get back to rest of the group. Ha, damn raiders! Valla shouts as his arrow pierces through the mans breastplate. But when the other man shouts back to his camp, raising the alarm, Valla isn't so thrilled... Time to run! He thinks while watching the arrow whiz past his own head. Way too clo... But before the elf could even finish the thought his cloak and skin erupt into flames. Blisters and boils finish fulling his scarred face and uncovered arm.

Breathing heavily, too heavily for his own liking, and fighting his urge to scream in agony at the searing pain and intense heat of the flames that egulfed his body. How will we make it out of this one? He wonders.

Praying Sanji and Xeron are close, and able enough, to help him out, I better have that round of ale!! He screams just before firing another arrow at the wounded soldier, praying for a kill hit. The elf then turns and runs as fast he he possibly can back toward the camp.

Actions:
Bow attack: d20+4=8.....
Bow damage: d8=5

Run as many feet as possible. I know you can 'move' up to your base movement and attack, but I'm guessing I can't attack and then run and quad (or triple) that movement in the same round. So, Valla will run as far as he can after shooting one last time.

White fire instantly blazes through the minotaur's eyes* as the past accusations of his father's implication is his mother come rushing back to him. Then, just as suddenly, it passes as he realizes that the half-orc could have no knowledge of that event. No. he says firmly. My father was a good and honorable man who loved my mother. Changing subjects quickly, he continues We are all experienced in battle, and most of us keep aware of our surroundings. We all know how to work effectively in a group (I might be stretching the truth at the moment). Six of us were able to take on eight enemies during the last battle with no casualties. Even if you don't listen well in battle, we can plan for that. If you would like to help us in the hopes of finding your mother's killer, then we will accept your help. Just remember that the other members in our group will not fully trust you until you prove yourself in battle and they know whose side you are on.

As for the horns, I am a minotaur. We are a race that understands the importance of honor, and our horns make goes weapons in battle.
Bosk swings his head gently from side to side to emphasize the point.

Sunday September 13th, 2009 10:33:44 AM

Nice shot. Now let's get out of here! The thrill of it all washes over Sanji as she speaks to Valla. Then the arrow whizzes by. Sanji glances back in time to see briefly engulf Valla. We have to move! Xeron, we have to help him. I'll guard our backs while I can. If we get separated, meet up at the caravan. We should try to stay together, though, if we can. With that, Sanji helps Valla turn and they begin to flee. She will move at her maximum speed that allows her to stay with Valla.

Don't worry, I'm a woman of my word. You'll get your ale. I'd have preferred to get it without the side of crispy elf, but I get you can't have everything. She gives a smile to her companions and continues to urge them on. This might just be worth the loss of sleep. I wonder whose turn it will be to do the "stupid" task next time...

Sanji feels a small pang of regret for talking the elf into staying just a little longer. But that feeling quickly drops away as she focuses on the task at hand. They have to run....

As soon as the magic user attacks Valla, Xeron blood rushes to his brain. He yells "Run!Everyone Run" not very stealthy but the odds were not in their favor.
When he sees Valla fire another arrow, he yells "Scarface, do you have death wish?"

He urges Sanji to run before going into a sprint. Xeron will run as fast as he can back to the camp.

We attacked imprepared and without a plan. This was too risky for my taste.

As Valla hightails it out of there, smoke trailing off of his body, another arrow whizzes way over head missing him by a mile. The trio continue their withdrawal from the Ironband territory and are glad to see that they are not being followed.

Arriving back at Penn's camp, everyone there notices Valla's new "burnt" look.

Upon ariving at the camp, Sanji glances over her shoulder and pauses to scan back the way she came.*,** She will take a long pull from her waterskin and motion toward Padre and Bosk. He could use some healing if you are willing and able. She helps lower Valla into a sitting position and hands him her waterskin.

Well folks, as Xeron said, we may have made this iron band group a little upset. That is, if they don't enjoy finding their companions dead or having arrows shot at them. I managed to put one of them down, but there are others, at least three. We saw 2 and heard another one being referenced. So, there are probably a few more than that. Unfortunately, we couldn't get close enough to be sure of their numbers or how well they are equiped. Obviously they have magic users. Sanji gestures toward Valla indicating the sorce of her logic. But the good news is that because of Mr. Eagle Eye here, I owe you all a round of ale the next time we feel like drinking.

Not waiting for any questions, Sanji continues to ramble on. What do you guys think of posting some look outs just in case trouble arises? I'm not sure whether they got a good look at us or not, but it probably won't take them too long to realize where we ran off to. The one I took out muttered something about wondering "where the the 3 hells are they" or something like that. I assume he was wondering about them. Sanji lazily waves a hand in the direction of the bodies of their fallen enemies. I'm surprised you guys didn't take care of those while we were away. We might want to do that before Mr. Penn wakes up.

The minotaur looks at their crispy companion, and begins to respond to Sanji's questions as they come up. "Ariman can you take care of Valla and bless the rest of us as soon as you see someone coming? You still have all of your spells for the day and can pray for more when needed. I used up most of my spells questioning the captives."

"I do agree that we need to set up some gaurds, and prepare for battle. There is a good chance that they will wait for nightfall in order to prepare and to maintain the element of surprise."
He then turns and yells to the half orc, "MaiKill, you may wany to move more to the north, as that is the direction of thier camp. Last time they chose to climb the fense rather than using the gate. Besides, if they come from that direction we will see them coming. If they come from the north, then they can hide behind the tent and wagons."

Returning his attention to Sanji, he responds "We left he bodies because we didn't want to have any fewer people at camp than we already had. We already were short three, another two could have been devistating if we were attacked again. If you think we have time, I can take the bodies now. We also need to decide what to do with the captives, are thought at the moment is to turn them over to the gaurds. As far as preparing for battle, I suggest we get those who primarily use magic to hind in the wagons and fortify themselves, maby place some calotropes around the area."

Sixtus begins to pace for the rest of the night, on edge and frustrated beyond belief. Just before going to bed he uses one of his spells to heal Valla as Bosk calls for Ariman to do something.

"Bah! Don't give him an excuse to try and help now, he may end up thinking that he is part of this group, Bosk." Agitation liberally coats the cleric's words.

Just before laying down, Sixtus gruffly states, "Tomorrow we need a definitive plan."
--------------------------------------------
As Sixtus is woke for his watch and his prayers are said, he begins pacing the camp, apparently picking up from where he left off the day before. He makes sure to give everyone enough time to fully rest but does little to increase the comfort of the captives. As the group rises, complete their morning routines, and assembles for the morning, Sixtus clears his throat.

"So today we need to figure out what is happening. Perhaps we hire some children to go and listen and scout for us, that way we are not hurt for numbers. Everyone in Mudtown is for hire. The captives stay here, perhaps for leverage if negotiations are to ensue. Does that sound like an acceptable place to start?"

Valla takes Sanji's offered help, and drinks graciously from her water flask. Thank you... Don't get no cheap-barnfloor-ale nethier.. My skin and robes are still smoking here.. Valla musters a smile. Glad he took the two shots, even though It probably wasn't the smartest idea.

The elf then asks, pleadingly, Bosk, Ahirman, Padre? Could one of you patch me up a bit? He lifts his arms and shows his tattered robes and blistering skin. I seem to be a bit burnt..

After its decided to get guards for the gate and what not. Valla nods, Sorry guys, I've nearly depleted all the spells I've prepared for the day. I couldn't possibly remember any more of the completcated arcane writing for a long while. A simple spell of trickery is all I have left for the day. Valla says this in a grim voice. Knowing both priests are hardpressed as well. Naru favoring face painting and humors pranks over the well being of her companions.

Valla then finds a nice place to sit in a crossed legged position, inside the sleeping tent. IF anything is to happen, come get me. I'll do all I can. But, please, until that point... Let me rest.

Not, "This morning was really crappy, I've...etc..." Then "Oh, dang, I forgot my multi-laser this morning..."

It confuses people. Write about the past in the past tense, not in the present tense.

"Most of my cantrips are of limited use durring battle, and I would perfer it if you could hold your own in battle long enough to take one ofm them out before you go.[b/] He gives valla a faint smile to let him know that his is only kidding.

The horned cleric points his horn towards Katrin, [b]If we are going to make pans, then we should do so in hushed whispers so that our captives do not over hear them.
Lowering his voice, the cleric continues Xeron, do really think any questioning we do will get back to the Iron Band? If so, then perhaps we can trick them. Let them think our carrivan will be underprotected at a certain time of night...after everyone has prepared thier spells and is well hidden. Maybe we can ask around town for the location of a certain building, and casually mention that we need to meet someone there just before sunrise? Or perhaps we could ask to hire some additional men for that time of day, but refuse them all for costing too much?

No worries friend. I won't waste my money on anything but the... affordable.... Sanji gives Valla a crooked smile and feels a sense of warmth fill her gut. So this is what comraderie feels like. I could get used to this. Provided that the Iron Band doesn't kill us.

Sanji enjoys the moment before returning to the task at hand. I agree that hiring children would be too risky. I know that if I were hired in that situation, I'd probably just take the money and run. But setting those brigands up for an ambush is a great idea. I like the idea of spreading rumors to lure them to a place of our choosing. Then they will have to fight on our terms.

She arches her back to work out some of the kinks and glances at the bodies again. We should take care of these soon. I'll help take care of it. Will any of you strapping gentleman be willing to acompany me? Or would it be a poor mark to your honor to be performing such tasks? Sanji flutters her eyebrows in a teasing gesture, trying to make light of the situation.

I'd think of myself a liability before anything. At least Im a decent bowman, I believe I see myself hanging back if we meet any threats today. Valla forces a smile, then goes back to resting up a bit.

The ambush is the way to go fellas. The elf offers his thoughts, not wanting to risk his, very few, gold on some random child. Who have grown up in mudtown as well... No offense Xeron, but I wouldn't trust my money with hardly anyone who grew up in this town. The young one there Valla points to Xeron, Showed me that merely a few minutes after I met him. With no resolute plan set down in stone, Sanji and Xeron unload one of the wagons of it's chests, then puts a load of dead bodies into it. Katrin sits quietly and does not show any emotion as her dead comrades are loaded into the wagon.

Unexpectedly, Ariman and Naru exit the tent, the former still sporting his "clown face". "I am leaving, the position we have been placed in and the accusations levied against me are well, not to my liking. I take my leave of you." With that said, Ariman leaves the compound, with Naru quickly on his heels. "I'm not much for fighting guys and would just get in the way. Valla watches the group dispose of the bodies, thinking and meditating. Will the band come after us? In my gut I know that gnome had something to do with this. Not the same band though... I wonder what will happen today, no matter really... I'll be near useless without my spells. He pulls his bow, gets an arrow out of the quiver and lays both across his lap, pats them and sighs Looks like this is all I have for today, hang back and litter them with arrows. Hmm.. He watches the other two wizards walk out of the tent, and leave the group for their own way in Hook City. Fine by me, You know, being the only wizard of a group has its advantages! The elf smiles, knowing its more a liability than an advantage.

He shurgs then goes to find Padre and Bosk, Well, what for today? Dig trenches? Build a wall or two? What are you two thinking?

Perhaps in his culture they look towards the largest of the group to be the natural leader. He pushes the thought aside when he suddenly hears Xeron's comment "He is just a walking and talking cow!" Bosk gives him a stern and slightly threatening look upon hearing the comment and begins to head over to him, having previously made it clear that he does not take kindly to cow jokes when he hears Xeron add But he a Good man! Bosk then decides to let the comment go as most likely being part of Xeron's unique sense of humor and hopefully good or at least neutrally intentioned .

Bosk sees the companions off and then speaks to Valla on and Padre on the issue of camp security. "Valla's right. We need to fortify the camp in what ever way we can. Pig Alley - DM Jim  d20+1=7 ;

Not knowing where to go, just driving the cart to gods know where, and not doing that so well (Sanji handle animal:7), eventually they come across a passerby and ask him where Pig alley it. The man points to the north to a far off hill, "Just to the right of the cemetary," nods and then continues along his way, as does the trio of undertakers.

Arriving at the base of the hill, the trio see the large sign noting that there is a cemetary on the hill, but off to the right as they were told, was a large trench almost the size of a small chasm. A foul reeking odor came from the rift in the earth and here is where the unknown and forgotten were dumped, left to rot under the sun's gaze.

Two curious fellows were standing near the rift, gazing into it. Perhaps they had just dropped off a body, but it was unlikely--it seemed as if they had just met each other and were just saying hi. One was a half-orc, and by the smell, which Maikill could easily discern even through all the other odors, she was a female, and a pretty one at that--for a half-orc. The other was a gnome, quite barbaric in appearance, and seemed to be constantly on the lookout for any signs of trouble.

Grendel is a half orc of middling height, her strength evident in her broad arms and wide hips. She wears simple clothes of a traveler, with tough brown leather boots, black working pants and a large brown tunic which is a size too large for her. Her reddish brown hair is pulled into a ponytail that reaches past the mid of her back. A silver chain hangs around her neck and beneath her tunic and an overstuffed pack lies at her feet.

As the wagon approaches nervously steps forward with a note clenched tightly in her hands. Clumsily attempting a courtsey while wearing pants makes for an interesting display as she presents the note.

It's scrawled, by the look of it, rather quickly with Naru's handwriting.
"This girl's probably the most helpful person in Mud City. I found her giving food to some orphan children who know her by name. That counts for a pretty decent 'reference' in my book. She agreed to sign on to fulfill my responsibilities, I know she'll be of use. Don't let Penn take advantage of her kindness. ~N."

The girl smiles nervously, shiny white tusks more visible than otherwise. "Me name's..." She clears her throat and attempts to stand a bit straighter before correcting, "My name is... Grendel."

Xeron seems to trust them enough to get within striking distance, which seems poor judgement for a small human to make.

Maikill for his part stands next to the cart and holds his axe at the ready.

"She read, smart. Careful, word trick people. Who little one, he you pet?"

Grendel takes a moment to understand her situation as this is *not* what she anticipated. Two of the group are on edge around an unarmed woman and her morningstar is a good 10 yards behind her in her pack at the edge of the chasm.

Just breath. She looks to the half-orc as he speaks as much can be understood from his few broken phrases. When he asks, "She read, smart. Careful, word trick people. Who little one, he you pet?", she replies to unbalance him and hopefully reduce the tension, "My words are true, nae tricky as you would assume. As for your words on the other hand, I imagine they sound alot like your father's, no?"

With that she looks to the gnome in hopes he speaks up and helps to resolve the unstable situation some. Considering the gnome's appearance she ponders whether a firestorm of bravado is a more likely outcome.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6
Friday September 18th, 2009 6:11:27 PM

Looking at Bosk, and somewhat smirking at the minotaurs resentment to Xeron's remarks, I don't know any cows that would save my scarred ass, thats for sure!

When Bosk asks for ideas to secure the camp a bit better, Valla gets his pack from the tent, and begins to rummage through the untidy thing. Like most wizards, Valla is extremly unorganized and it takes him many minutes to find his small pouch. I have some caltrops, we could sprinkle these on this side of the fence. That would make it very hard to get over it and still be quiet. The elf thinks a bit then adds, Although Im not sure if they would be to useful if they were to be buried under the mud... Well?

Motley AC:16/13/11 HP:16/16

"Her pet?! Hah! No, she is my betrothed." With this, he steps forward and takes Grendel's arm. His wide grin drops for a second and he takes on a serious tone. Pulling himself up to his full height, somewhere around the half-orc's navel, he begins: "Ours is a tragic tale of misplaced love that would make you weep were I to tell it."

After a brief pause, his face breaks once more into a wide grin and a laugh comes easily to his lips. "I kid, of course! You may call me Motley, of the Anklebiters."

With this, he bows low and extends a hand.

He is clad in leather, patterned in diamonds of black and studded all over. The large axe at his back suggests he may be useful to have around, and unwise to cross.

Saturday September 19th, 2009 2:26:25 AM

With Motley's response Grendel breaks out into boisterous laughter. Hers is a lively child-like laughter full of spirit that has a habit of catching on quickly, it's as if she forgets who she is during these precious moments.

With a pat on the head of her little anklebiter, Grendel moves to the back of the coach and pulls one of the bodies off, shoulders it without much more than a grunt and walks to the chasm to make a deposit. Once the wagon is unloaded, she hefts her backpack into the wagon bed before hopping up on the tailgate.

"Shall we go? I'm eager to meet this Penn fellow and fulfill my commitments...", she says.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Saturday September 19th, 2009 8:19:03 AM

Xeron looks at the gnome in disbelief. He tries to open his mouth as Grendel approaches the wagon but does not have the time to say anything as she unload the wagon.

"A crazy gnome? Two half-orcs? A minotaur? I guess this being "Good" business is a real punishment. I gues that is the price to pay for the things I have done. I do not know how much longer I can be with that group. I long working alone."

He grabs the ring hanging around his neck and hold it tight, very tight.

As Grendel jumps on the wagon, he makes one sound of protest but realizes that Sanji does not seem to care and who knows with Maikill. It would be at least 2 v 1 and he knows it is losing proposition. He stays on the wagon and spends the rest of the trip checking the two newcomers and Maikill.

He does not like the situation nor trust all these newcomers.

Maikill
Saturday September 19th, 2009 12:08:48 PM

Maikill bristles and his yellowish fangs flash in the morning light as the female half-orc suggests he is like his father.

"NO LIKE FATHER, LIKE MOTHER. You lucky you girl, no fight girl."

He seems to cool down slightly and adds:

"You smart, read words. But no nothing of Maikill. I no stay mad, but no say like father. You no married to small one? Hi small Motley, you have axe like me. Maybe we fight bad man. I hit high, you hit low. No escape from axes."

Maikill then begins to snort, it what must be a laugh or perhaps he has a breathing problem.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 14/10/10 HP 14 of 14  d20+4=9 ;
Saturday September 19th, 2009 3:01:07 PM

Pondering Valla's suggestion, Bosk examines the ground to determine how soft it is and if the calotrops will be effective.* Unsure of the results, Bosk says "I have an idea, can see one of those calotrops for as second? If these caltrops work, we should be able to cover a decent area. Since they will have to climb the fence, it should be safe to assume we can spread a thinner than normal line across the fence line. Assuming Valla agrees, the horned cleric borrows a calotrop from Valla and places it in the mud. He then walks over to the half-orc prisoner, and the smallest unconscious prisoner (not Katrin) picks him up and carries them over to the calotrop and one by one tests their weight on the device to see what the effects will be. He is extremely careful to make sure that the calotrop does not further injure or kill the captives.

Bosk then makes a suggestion of his own "Perhaps we can trap the fence. We know they will have to climb over it or crash through it. Normally they could climb the fence in a few seconds, but what if it was rigged to injure them? Either to cut them, or collapse on them, or start on fire and burn them? I don't have much that could aid us in this area, perhaps someone else does. Any ideas?[b/] After waiting for a response, Bosk makes another suggestion. [b] Perhaps we should rearrange the camp. Since they are already familiar with the lay out, maybe we should change things up a bit. Make it more defendable. I suggest we surround Penn's tent with the carts, tents and merchandise. Create an area in the corner that forces them to from the direction they did last time, or force them to run across the open ground of the camp while we attack them at range from hiding behind our makeshift barricades.

As Bosk speaks, his mind is almost overwhelmed with ideas. Quickly he picks up a helmet, places it on his head and thinks about changing into a pile of wooden crates and says the word Shizzlebop to see what happens. If nothing negative happens, he will try the same thing to turn into a tree.

Just them then, Sanji Maikill and Xeron return with a few newcomers. For a moment Bosk is surprised to see the half-orc and gnome, but then he approachs them. Judging by the lack of blood, I am assuming you are all friends. My name is Bosk, The Horned Cleric...and you all are?

Valla quickly agrees to let Bosk try out his caltrops on the prisoners. Making the fence catch fire is beyond my arcane abilities. Although rigging it to collapse, that I might can pull off.

Watching Bosk put on the helmet, Valla figures, why not. He puts it on his head, reciting the comman word shizzlebop!

When the elf sees the newcomers along with Maikill, Sanji and Xeron, Valla peers in their direction.

Great, another orc blood, and a gnome!

Valla rushes to the gnome. A determined look on his face, he looks the gnome over for any insignia that might tie him to Zamnoodle. Short one, where did you come from? Been in mudtown long? Ever heard of Zamnoodle?

Clearly Valla believes this gnome, and probably ever other one he meets, is friends or family to Zamnoodle. His face shows his dislike for the short creature, and his sneering could be takin offensivly.

Hardly paying the other half-orc any attention, Valla keeps his gaze on the gnome. Sending spies now huh? You tricky, ale-slinging, ugly half-a-dwarf!

DM JIM -- Nothing happens, but you do feel a little lightheaded, but that passes quickly.

Grendel (Jay) AC:10/10/10 HP 9/9
Saturday September 19th, 2009 6:30:06 PM

Grendel pops off the back of the wagon as it rolls into camp, tugging her heavy pack with her. She looks around for a patch that is more solid than muddy and drops her pack on that location to claim the spot for her tent this evening.

Passing by the firepit and inadequate cooking set-up Grendel just shakes her head and comments quietly and mostly to herself, "No no no, this will not do..."

As Valla makes a comment that was intentioned as a derogatory shot at her, Grendel chooses to ignore the comment and the man. Though, she can't help but notice his style of dress, which marks him an arcane caster. If he turns out to be of the wizard pursuation she'll have to make a connection to him, what better way to learn than to travel and work side by side with one?

To the Horned Cleric she offers her hand as a man would. "Name be...", she clears her throat before continuing, "My name is Grendel. What kind of cleric might the 'Horned Cleric' be?" she inquires with sincere interest. With a smile that shows her ivory tusks she points to the item in his hands, "And what might you be doing with such a tiny hat" she laughs softly.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 14/10/10 HP 14 of 14

Bosk pictures in his mind how he must look, wearing the small helm, but pushing aside any feeling of embarrassment he removes the helmet. Responding to the half-orc in a stern, but not unkind voice, he says, Perhaps Grendel, you could tell us more about yourself and why you are in our camp before asking us about our bussiness.

Grendel (Jay) AC:10/10/10 HP 9/9
Saturday September 19th, 2009 11:13:48 PM

Grendel laughs at Motley's antics, the gnome had an engratiating manner that put her at ease, then hands Bosk the note she previously showed to Xeron.

With a slight tip of her head she states, "I'm here to help." and lifts a silver holy symbol of the Flower, which causes her to blush, from underneath her oversized tunic. "From what Naru told me, you all are expecting another attack soon. Perhaps my prayers can gird you and tend to the wounded?", she adds while looking around the camp.

Bosk takes the note, and scrutinizing it the best he can, to deemine if it is actually from Naru. After a while he decides that Grendel most likely did not write the note, but having never seen Naru's hand writing it is impossible to determine if she wrote it. The large minotaur allows a brife smile to cross his lips as he remembers Naru's parting.

"If Naru sent you, then surely she told you about the surprise she gave to Ariman before she left.
I suppose it is possible that she didn't tell Grendel about the makeup, but I cannot picture her passing up an opportunity to gloat about it.

Maikill

Maikill hops off the wagon when they return to camp.

He looks to Bosk, and blurts out:

"She no with me, never see before. Little one say lie, before he say she wife, now say she sister. No think she sister. They different. Sister look same as brother. then with a bit of a embarrassed look I mean girl look different than boy, she girl. She has..um..uhh...

with that Maikill falls silent and goes over to the side and starts to look at the wall.

Valla almost falls over when Motley asks if Zamnoodle is a friend of his. He shakes his head, but then smiles, reads the letter from Naru and puts the thought of these two gnomes being partners out of his head.
Its nice to know all gnomes arn't so foolish. So, Motley?, why have you and your.... ahh...

He 'sizes' up Grendel, taking in the odd scene of a female half-orc.

......Sister chose to help out our group? Since your hear, and know of the impending attack, any ideas on how to better fortify the camp? We've tossed around the idea of using caltrops along the fence line. The elf then looks at Bosk, Or maybe putting them in a semi-circle around where we decide to group up at? Lure them into a certain area with only two or three of us. The rest hiding, jumping out when the enemy gets close, then make them run through the caltrops to get to us. Pelting them with arrows and missile attacks until they get through our caltrop trap.

Valla looks to Bosk, he shurgs and smirks. Better than a clown and a spoiled brat right?

padre Sixtus Torquemada [drew]
Sunday September 20th, 2009 11:06:01 AM

It was quite convenient that the edge of the cart was about neck high for the cleric. More so, it was astonishing that that edge of the cart had a soft, folded piece of cloth resting on it; there was no wonder why Sixtus perhaps fell asleep, standing up, for a brief few moments...or hours.

There was idle chatter of his closest compatriots around the camp. The smell of campfire, a smell which he grew to love as much as anything, wafted through his nose and eased his tensed muscles. the trip had been arduous and bloody but the Free Company of Wayward Souls had been successful in finding the hidden temple of Martaeus, destroying all of the vile worshipers. They had easily unearthed the tomb of Raepoch Tryyv and taken the cursed medallion form his neck, returning it to Koshe-Marr and directly into Gargul's hands. Now, the Wayward Souls were on their way home. They could see the giant hooks, suspended by the air itself, supporting the bridge and the greatest market in all of the Southern Continent. They had chosen to spend one last night out under the stars before returning to their collective mansion on Marble Causeway. He could head Valla gripe about Zamnoodle and Bosk boast his title of Horned Cleric. He could hear the cleaving-machine, Maikill, talk of the old days before he had exacted revenge on the orc who destroyed his previous family. Then he was on the alert as new voices began coming from the edges of the shadows. He heard of a brother and sister and suddenly bright light tore through his vision.

"Huh? Wha....a...I, uh, I was thinking that we needed to get rid of the bodies as soon as possible. Does everyone agree?"

He goes sit on a wagon stairs, away from the rain and watch the rest of group in silence.

Lenwe - DM Jim
Sunday September 20th, 2009 3:14:57 PM

It is about this time that some in the group notice Lenwe is gone and so too his gear--no note, nothing.

Grendel (Jay) AC:10/10/10 HP 9/9
Sunday September 20th, 2009 5:30:57 PM

With a look of disappointment she replies to Bosk, "No, Naru said nothing about Ariman... neither did the depressed clown she traveled with."

Grendel looks about the camp, taking in the group as it currently stands. According to Naru there was a group of mercs who were threatening to damage this camp. We have two ragers, a couple of sneaks a wizard and a trio of clerics... most more combat able than she. An idea prompts her to speak, "Why not engage these ruffians with a frontal assault. They are so proud they might not expect it as their behavior seems to be more of a hit, loot and run." Pointing to Maikill and Motley, "These two can head it up, backed up by the clerics who can heal them if needed. Those who prefer sneaking should be able to get flanking shots in the massive melee and the orc-slayer can add a blast or an arrow to whatever area needs it the most. I'd just as soon be on the attacking end, rather than trying to anticipate their assault... we get to pick the field of battle." Grendel shrugs, "If you think it's a good idea...?"

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6
Sunday September 20th, 2009 8:22:05 PM

Valla chuckles slightly and shakes his head. He smirks a bit then looks at Bosk Depressed clown, now that should go into a book somewhere Then, dismissing the slight joke, he adds Ariman is the clown.

The elf then looks to Boks, tracing his facial scars with his finger. Back to square one... Going to their camp isn't an option. He says with finality.

Figureing Grendel has no clue what he's talking about Valla elaborates, We've had this discussion. Me, Sanji and Xeron have just come back from a rather pointless, and painfully hot, scouting mission. We can't leave this camp unattended. Many other people in this dirty town would probably love to get their hands on Mr. Penns things. Going to their camp would leave this camp open to who ever wants to plunder. Hence the reason those two, Valla points to the rogues, And myself went to scout. We figured out mostly nothing. Except that they have at least one other arcanist. He nearly burnt the skin from my bones. Standing, and looking out towards the fence surrounding the camp, he adds So were trying to figure out the best way to ambush or at least be ready for the attackers.

Watching Padre awake from his daydreaming, They've already diposed of the body's friend. Brought another orc and a funny little gnome back with them as well. Valla walks over to the priest, and lowers his voice a bit, The gnome claims they are siblings, but I see no resemblence....

Grendel (Jay) AC:10/10/10 HP 9/9
Sunday September 20th, 2009 9:52:12 PM

Grendel listens to Valla's explaination, which seems quite valid. "I've got an idea but I think someone smarter than me should flesh out the details..." and with that she trots on over to Zeron.

"Listen, I know you don't trust me... but that's good because I don't trust you either. Which is exactly why I think you could put some flesh on the dry bones of this thought I had. This group... 'Ironband' right? They're pretty high up on the totem pole which means a bunch of groups might want to go for 'em if they're weakened. We'll you guys took out a decent group of them and dumped them in Pig Alley. Plus many local protectors have run afoul of goblin raiders recently, which Naru thought could be these same Ironband folk using magic to disguise themselves. Why not put word out on the street? Maybe some vultures will circle, maybe some merchants will want payback... maybe this will keep them off our backs long enough to get Penn's goods into Hook City safely."

Grendel shuts up for a minute, fully expecting her idea to fall flat unless a canny mind can figure out some way to make this work in our favor.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Monday September 21st, 2009 12:40:02 AM

Without raising his eyes to look at Grendel, Xeron says "Trust is given in battle or is sticky situation. How do I know you and your nutcase are not plant from the Ironband? I did not say alive this long doing what I do by expecting the best. So may the others trust you, especially the priest, they are so incredibly naive. I did not trust the clown nor the spoiled brat and I was right. If you are sent by her, it is not a good thing in my book. "

He stop stalking and keeps fixating on the patch of mud in front of him. "Do you really think people would really believe the Ironband is weakened? They send their rookies and idiots and we nearly lost 2 people. Nah, no one can say the Ironband is weakened until we get rid of them and take their camp. Until then, their reputation will keep everyone onthe sideline. [/b"]

He suddenly notive that Lenwe has been MIA. He yells at Sixtus "[b]Hey Padre, it seems that the threat of ironband made one another wizard lose his bodily function in his paint. With the spoiled brat and the clown, that is 3 original members who revealed themselves as coward. Don't you think you should be more discerning when you created that group?"
"

"Valla and Bosk nearly died for the group. Sixtus saved my life. Sanji could have taken us down when we went on the reconnaissance mission. I trust these fours. But the newcomers? I believe that the ones with axes wil cut our head some and the one with the morningstar will crush the skull of the survivors."

He stays where he is, siting in one of the wagon, away from the rain, not paying attention to Grendel standing in front of him.

padre Sixtus Torquemada [drew]

Sixtus watches and listens as the collection of mercs seems to be nothing more than a slowly simmering pot of angst. There are issues abound floating through and the inconsistency and lack of formulating a plan is a strong example of that. He overhears parts of the red-headed female half-orc and nods slightly in agreement before Xeron throttles her verbally. Then, his words snake around to Sixtus and begin wrapping around his neck and head.

"I am quite confident, Xeron, that I had very little to do with putting this group together. I am pretty sure Naru's youthful zeal is what got us all this job."
Sixtus turns slightly to address the red-headed half-orc. "And, Grandel is it? Grandel does make a good point. Even if the Ironband is barely weakened by sending their mooks, no one else knows that and it should be time that they chose if they want to stand up to the crooked company or not."

Sixtus lowers his hood again, the stifling heat that builds up quickly under his cloak is making him irritable. He tilts his head back and allows the rain to cascade down across his tanned skin and through the graying-brown mop of hair. Running his hand through his hair and across his face seems to wipe away some of the frustration that had begun etching its way across his face.

Grendel blows back a stray bit of red hair from the front of her face in frustration with Xeron. "No, I'm sure just sitting around on our hands is a much better solution to our dilemma. I'm sure the Ironband is completely second guessing their plans due to all of your preparation...", she says, oozing with sarcasm.

She stomps off and finds a place to sit until Penn wakes up. She can introduce herself and perhaps receive some direction from the employer... that is... assuming he takes her onboard as a protector.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6
Monday September 21st, 2009 9:04:13 AM

O buddy.... Xeron's probably the most stubborn person I've ever met in my long life... Valla walks over to Xeron, Friend, I think we should show a little faith in these three new ones. You know how I despise orcs, and their half-breeds, and I don't much care for the mini-dwarves ethier. BUT, right now the addtion of two muscular half-orcs and a small, but hardy, gnome is really what our group needs. Valla wraps his arm around Xeron's shoulder and sits next to his companion. Just give them a chance, or be your approximation of nice. For now at least.

After his small talk with Xeron, Valla nods in agreement with Padre and Grendel, Sure, sounds like it will ethier have the band takin care of for us or send them to us. Very pissed off. If I could pick any two people to start these rumors, I'd say ethier Sanji or Xeron and you, Sixtus. Sanji or Xeron because they both grew up here, and know who to say what to. Padre because of his silver tounge. I'd just end up starting a bar fight and be drenched in ale or worse.. Valla shakes his head after he's done speaking, remembering the foolish gnome. Zamnoodle.... He will be paid back...

Still sitting next to Xeron, Valla shows a crooked smile, Maybe you could find out alittle bit about Zamnoodle while your out and about as well? Ya, Its a personal fued, but a fued nonetheless. I'd like to settle it too

Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 6
Monday September 21st, 2009 9:17:54 AM

Sanji seems deep in thought as she returns to the camp. New co-workers seem to be appearing out of thin air as some of her old ones exit the scene. Hearing some of her companions gripe about the newcomers trustworthyness, she feels compelled to pipe up. Well, I for one feel that there is safety in numbers. Yes it is true that we recently made an enemy in the Iron Band group. And, if we didn't have to guard Mr. Penn's caravan, I would be happy to storm their camp. As to your trustworthyness, I have no reason to think of you as an enemy. I don't think you are Iron Band infultraiters because I don't feel that they had enough time to throw something that devious together. However just because I don't see you as an enemy, doesn't mean I will automatically view you as an allay either. We all have to prove ourselves. And the way things have been going the last couple of days, you will get your chance soon enough.

As the subject moves to securing the camp, several ideas seem to be forming. We can definately try the caltrops. A more practical tactic could be to just have more people on each watch. I like the idea of rearanging the wagons. Sanji wipes rain and sweat from her brow and takes a long drink from her waterskin.

Always preferring action to just sitting Sanji raises an eyebrow at the notion of spreading rumors. Well, I'd be happy to let some rival groups know about the weakened state of the Iron Band group. If nothing else, it could remind those other groups of how much they dislike the Iron Band. Re-securing her waterskin, Sanji stretches and jerks her head to the side quickly, releasing a loud "crack". And I'll not forget about my promise of ale. Maybe I'll find a nice spot while I'm out. Sanji turns to Xeron trying to encourage him. What do you say, Mr. Happy. Should we get to it?

Monday September 21st, 2009 9:30:56 AM

With most of the team making comments regarding the likelihood of an assault from Ironband coming at any moment, Grendel pops her pack open. Digging through things she slides off her cloak and tunic, leaving just her undershirt. Pulling out a roll of linen, she wraps it tightly over her chest before pulling out a heavy pile of furs that she begins to secure in place over her body. After several minutes of work she is protected by strong hide armor of the same make as the free orcs of this realm wear. It fits her awkwardly as it is obviously not designed with a female in mind.

She slings 5 javelins over her shoulder, takes up a heavy wooden shield and morningstar and walks out of camp. Taking a quick turn at the fence she walks a circuit around the camp attempting to keep an eye on things in hopes of catching something 'out of place' early enough to give the rest of the group fair warning. Nothing like pounding dirt with your feet to work out frustration...

Xeron looks at Valla. "You may be right. These may be trustworthy. Or could we waiting to cut our throat when we sleep. I think everyone has accepted them, which makes me more worried. I guess the real test will be battle. It did exposed the 3 cowards we had in the group. Let's see what happens next. But until they save one of us or nearly die, I will question their allegiance, the same way you questioned mine when Zamboddle humiliated you."

He gets up and goes next to Sanji "Well, if you do not mind beeing seen with me, how about we go hit a few taverns and merc row to let the rumor out that the Ironband is weakened and has nearly lost half their band to a bunch of newbies?"

IF Sanji agrees, Xeron will try to make small conversation but will fail as it eaiser for him to slit a throat that talk a representative of the fairer sex.

Nodding his head as Xeron reminds him of his own distrust of Xeron. Your right friend, you have every right to question them, as do I. I don't think they are the most trustworthy, but we can use the help right now. I agree as well though, let the battle show who is really up for all this.

Monday September 21st, 2009 12:11:12 PM

Sanji will willingly go with Xeron, anxious to be active again. The experiences of the past couple of days have been much more interesting that her average routine and she is anxious to take things to the next level. Again, the thought enters her mind, Maybe this will finally be something I can belong to.

We should probably go to some taverns or markets or something like that and just let a few people know that the Iron Band got hurt last night. And, I don't know about you, but I'm more than a little worried about the employee turn over in our little group. Who knows, they may have been working for another group all along.

As Sanji and Xeron look around for potential rumor mongers, she practices her lines in her head. "So did you hear that the Iron Band tried another hit last night? They got pretty torn up, from what I hear, and lost a bunch of men. I sure wouldn't want to be them right now, not with the amount of bridges they've burned in this town."

She keeps her eyes open for any potential Iron Band members, looking for the tell-tale insignia.*

The plan is set and Xeron and Sanji head out to spread the rumors of the Ironbands defeat.

Meanwhile in the camp, Bosk and the rest setup for the attack they feel is coming.

Several hours pass and the pair of gossipers find that no one but the drunks believe them (it's happy hour somewhere in the Wold).

Grendel pops back in camp from walking a security pattern outside of their camp. She heads over to Bosk and Valla, the senior members of the group that are still in camp. "Is our benificent employer up and about yet. I'm hoping to speak with him and get signed on 'officially' before the arrows start flying. Besides, maybe he'll agree to us moving the camp... make it harder for the Ironband to find us.", she asks while twirling her morningstar about by the leather thong on it's handle mindlessly.

If not, she'll just head back out again to survey the area surrounding the camp. She's not at all happy about the compromised position they find themselves in. It feels like an inevitable battle is going to wash over them like this rainstorm.

As they walk back toward the camp, Xeron tells Sanji "I am sorry I could not be that good of the help with anything lately. I nearly got myself killed, could not do anything with the Ironband members at their camp and could not spread any rumors. I guess I am not good at much these days and certainly not with words. "

IT is obvious Xeron is trying to tell something to Sanji but if the rogue can make any sense of the speech, she is way smarter than a wizard!

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6
Monday September 21st, 2009 5:01:25 PM

Hoping Xeron and Sanji are doing well at spreading the rumors about the Ironband, Valla eats a small bit of his rations and ponders their dire situation. After a few hours pass, the situation doesn't seem so dire. You'd figure these bandits would have attacked by now. I wonder what is keeping them?

When Grendel comes to Valla, sharing anothe of his ideas. Valla reply's Penn is probably in his tent, If not, then I'd have no idea where to find him. Although moving the camp may be a good idea. I don't think it would work the way your wanting it to. The Ironband were employed by Penn. They know what his camp looks like, and what he looks like. Some of them will know me, Sanji and Xeron by sight as well.

The elf stands, and motions for Grendel to follow, Come, lets go speak with Penn.

IF Mr. Penn is in his tent, Valla will begin talking Mr. Penn, we have lost a few of our group, but gained a few as well. Mrs. Grendel here, Valla motions to Grendel, Along with another Half-orc, Maikill and a gnome, Motley. Naru and Ahriman have sent them instead of themselves. Both could not stand up to the phyisical toll this job entails. Lenwe has also left, but didn't say why. Valla waits for a response concerning the newcomers, and then begins again. We have been stumped, Mr. Penn. The Ironband who attacked us have promised that thier band will be back, its been a while now. We've made a scouting mission to their camp, which was useless, and still haven't seen nor heard from our Rival camp. Do you know anything about them that might help us prepare for an attack? Or could you allow us to just attack them, so that the fight isn't near your things?

Motley AC:16/13/11 HP:16/16
Monday September 21st, 2009 6:36:46 PM

I'd heard much about your work for Mr Penn and was hoping to make a difference here, but maybe what I heard were the ravings of half-drunk bards spinning tales for coin!

Friends, I appreciate the delicate position we are in, but I did not offer my keen axe and my rapier wit to stand around debating where to fight. The longer we wait, the more prepared the Ironband will be. We should strike them and strike them hard, then retreat to recover once spent. In this way we can wear them down and eventually vanquish them.

Motley walks over to talk to Maikill directly and says, Are you not bored, good sir orc? Does your blood not cry out for battle?

Maikill
Monday September 21st, 2009 6:46:52 PM

Maikill looks down at the small warrior, and frowns.

"You confused. I no orc, I human. Like mother. Father orc, but he bad. All orcs bad. I come fight orcs. Fight now. No like wait. We fight soon, show others we fight good."

Maikill shoulders his axe and a terrible look comes into his eyes.

"Bosk, why we wait. Go fight. Sit like chickens waiting for fox. Be like fox, not chicken. Fight now."

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Monday September 21st, 2009 7:42:30 PM

Xeron enters the camp and hears Motley and Maikill desire to fight. He shakes his head in disapproval "We are being paid to do good which means protecting Mr. Penn and his cargo of goods. We are not being paid to go pick up a fight. So unless Mr. Penn orders us to go after the Ironband, I do not think we should go attack them. Now if you feel like you need to go pick a fight, be my guest. I will be waiting here for your return on two legs or in the back of a cart on its way to Pig alley. "

He goes sit back on the stairs of the back of a wagon, away from the rain "Will they think I am a coward? Is it the right thing to do? Am I doing good? "

He stays there, holding the right around his hand very hard.

Maikill
Monday September 21st, 2009 9:34:29 PM

Maikill looks sternly at Xeron and crosses his arms across his chest.

"Maikill not stupid, know you went to camp. Killed guard, elf come back burned. Why you say we should not go attack? Why say no pay to pick fight? You go with elf and small human. Small one and me fight better, kill more bad men. You talk circles. Go, then say no go. I watch, I listen. I know what people do."

he looks around for Bosk and calls over

"What say you, send more and better to camp. Do job good. No run away like rabbits. You tell me, I listen you."

Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 6
Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 8:54:18 AM

Sanji becomes slightly annoyed at Maikill as he talks about the less than fruitful scouting mission. [i]Listen big guy, Xeron is right. Our first priority is to guard Mr. Penn, his wares, and this camp. Our scouting trip was based on the remaining unseen. When we lost that element of secrecy, we left. That is what we were instructed to do. Do not assume that we ran away out of fear or cowardice. It wasn't our intention to pick a fight, no matter how much we joked about it. We did the job as best we could. If you think you can scout better, feel free to try.[/b]

Suddenly feeling a little sheepish that she is standing up to a creature much bigger than she is, a crimson flush crosses her face. Now, I don't think that we should just attack the Iron Band group. But, another scouting misison with different individuals might proove more fruitful. I say use different people because Xeron, Valla and myself probably would be recoginized if spotted. Just like before, you can move in and gain as much information as you can, take out a few if you can then retreat. That's what we did the first time, but you might have more success with the info gathering than we did. Either way, we need aproval from Mr. Penn if we are planning on taking away from the camp's defenders.

Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9  d20+4=18 ;
Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 9:33:27 AM

If Penn is in his camp and takes Grendel onboard as a protector, she'll likely ask the following questions:

What can you tell us about Ironband that might be helpful should they come calling again?

Do you know any of the merchants that have been hit by goblin raiders before? If so, do you think they would like to know who was behind those attacks?
(I think we've figured out at this point it was Ironband.)

Would you prefer for us to stay in camp defending against an assault or would you be open to the option of making a run on Ironband? I would at least like the option of using a small group to skirmish at their camp to keep them busy defending from our attacks rather than attacking us here.

Do you have any rivals that might be using Ironband to knock you out of competition?

Do you have a pair of platnum rings
(50 gp each, 100 gp total) I might use as a spell focus to aid our defense of your belongings?

========================================================

Should any of these require a diplomacy roll, I scored an 18.

Venbolio Penn - DM Jim  d20+2=21 ;

Interrupted from his leisurely sleep, Penn slowly wakes up as he rubs his face whilst sitting on the edge of his cot. Getting up and going over to wash his face in the basin he has nearby, he seems not to respond to either Valla's or the newcomers questions.Once finished he looks upon the pair and studies them carefully, "Alright, here's what we'll do. I have a friend who can guard my cargo under the pretext that we're having lunch here. I'll go invite him right away, which leaves you about two hours to prepare for your attack on the Ironband camp." Penn pauses a moment and considers his next instructions, "If you do not return within the hour after leaving, well, I'll assume you're all dead and have to replace you." Nodding his head as if agreeing with himself, he continued, "There is no law here but the law we make. I am not an evil person, but I have done evil things to perserve my life and those under my charge. If the Ironband are allowed to remain intact, my life and those under my charge are endangered, so in other words, take no prisoners. Understand?"

Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9
Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 12:44:05 PM

Grendel turns to look at Valla and gives the man a firm nod as she turns her resolve to steel. Walking out of Penn's tent with Val, Grendel begins to call the team together. "Alright everybody come together!", she calls as she walks to the middle of the camp.

Once everyone is gathered she breaks down the situation. "Penn has a friend that will protect his camp for a couple of hours during 'lunch', at which point we are to make an assault on Ironband. Our instructions are quite clear... to take no prisoners. Everyone gear up, we've got 2 hours to pull together a plan for an assault. Thoughts, tactics, ideas?"

Looking to Valla she asks, "Did you, Sanji and Xeron get a good look at their compound? Good enough to give us a rough map?"

After the brief conversation Grendel will go over to the prisoner, Katrin. Grendel bends down to be on an even level before speaking, "Tell me about your short time with Ironband. How did you come to be employed by them? Is there anything I can get you to make you more comfortable? Do you have any friends that are still with the company?" Grendel will lean on a comfortable pursuasiveness rather than the rough intimidation this girl has already been put through.

The minotaur ponders the situation, we were hired to protect Penn and his cargo, not to attack others groups. However this may be the best chance we have of protecting him and our own lives. I just we hadn't used up so much of our magic.

Maikill Bosk yells, it looks like you got your wish. We are going after the Iron Band, everyone get prepared. Padre, since you have most of your healing spells still available, do you mind blessing us before we attack. You also would serve us well making sure we don't bleed to death wigh you healing spells. I'm afraind I have already used most of mine today. That also means that I will need to fight more defensively this time and we will have to rely on Maikill and Grendel more, but I will be right behind them incause they need help. I suggest we rely on our reconance party's information do figure out where to place any of our ranged fighters and prevent otheres from sneaking up on us.

He gets up and walks towards the prisoners. "Penn said no prisoner right? Does this apply to these too?"

If the group interprets Penn statement the same way as Xeron, he will execute the prisoners. If not he will go with the group

He stands there waiting for the response from the group thinking "So doing good mean attacking another group and eliminating them? Have I been doing good? IS killing good? I know it makes me feel better but is it good? I think I need a better way to relieve my frustration. Once I get paid, I think I'll visit Pleasure Alley. "

Grendel, who is speaking with Katrin at the moment, clears her throat. "Bosk's word was based on her co-operation, which she gave...", takes a moment to look at Katrin to emphasize the point to her that cooperation is still expected before finishing her statement, "and I assume will continue to give until this matter is resolved."

Grendel speaks once more to the group before returning to her conversation with Katrin, "Perhaps you sneaky types can make good use of those magic hats and come up with a plan to get us into the Ironband's compound? Judging by each of your gear I would say that a ranged firefight is one we will lose, while an up close melee will yield us the best chance of success... and survival."

With that she sits back down next to Katrin and offers her a drink from her waterskin. Quietly she remarks, "When this is all over, I'll treat you to a plate of roasted boar...", with a wink she smiles and finishes, "maybe it'll make up for some of the rough treatment you've faced this morning."

Nodding, and smiling, at Mr. Penns instructions Valla wordlessly agrees with Penn. He walks out with Grendel and listens to the groups ideas.

So far me and Bosk both have tried the magic hats, using the command word, and nothing has happened. I say forget about them, and lets go. Although I'll be nearly useless in melee, I do have my bow. The two rogues and I didn't get a good enough look at the compound to provide any type of map. Execpt the fact that their camp is clearly defined and seems to be in the thick of a small forest or wooded area. We should try to use this to our advantage.

Valla eyes Motley, Grendel and Maikill Were counting on you three to do most of the heavy fighting. His gaze now goes to Xeron and Sanji You two, since Padre and Bosk are somewhat low on their spells today, I'd suggest not getting to wrapped up in the fray. I know Im going to hang back at least.

With that Valla motions for the group to hurry, We only have a couple of hours. Lets get this over with Then starts walking toward the fence, in the Iron bands camp direction.

Motley seems to be ready to go and in fact is hopping from foot to foot with excitement.

Grendel pulls out the silver holy symbol of Flower from beneath her hide armor. "Actually I'm more of a healer than a front line combatant..."

Since we have 2 hours before we can attack, due to Penn's friend not coming until lunch time, Grendel will grab up some scale mail armor from the group loot to replace her hide armor, and attempt to activate one of the "Hats of Disguise". Assuming someone tells her the command word, she'll focus on the image of a human version of herself when she says it.

Your abilities will come in most handy. As for you Motley, I did not and do not know your abilities. I was not about to tell you what to do. Valla looks at Xeron His frustration is clouding his mind,.. Enlighten him elf! Xeron, I did not mean for you to sit back and watch friend. I meant for you to pick you attacks. Shot and hide my friend. The trees should give you ample cover. If you have no bow, the strike and run, I'll provide cover with my own bow. I don't want to see a repeat of the last skirmish. With you on death row friend.

Next he turns to Motley, Lots of energy, The elf laughs, Hope the Iron Band have Iron groin pieces as well!

As Grendel turns into a more human like form, Valla frowns. An orcish cleric? I'd never had thought... Anyways, I've tried three times with the helmets, and nothing... Whats the big deal? Valla picks up a helmet as well Shizzlebop! he says, in a powerful voice. Making his minds eye envision himself to look like Katrin, a female human.

padre Sixtus Torquemada [drew]
Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 10:46:31 PM

Shaking his head, Sixtus cannot believe what turn of evens has taken place in the past mere moments. He walks over to stand next to the blonde minotaur and elbows the massive cleric in the waistish area.

"Looks like someone has put the pants on, huh? I guess we should have been more assertive."

Sixtus shakes his head.

"I have only a couple of Gargul's blessings available to me this day. I will be a secondary fighter and command Gargul's Bane upon the Ironband...that should allow me to heal one time as well. If she has the healing covered then I will summon a shield to help aid me on the front line. Grendel is it? Well, you carry a token of Flower and talk about being a healer. That will be our expectation of you for this fight; you heal as much as you can."

Walking over to the two rogues, Sixtus notes that Xeron sounds a bit agitated. Looking him in the eyes, the cleric rests a hand on his shoulder. "This afternoon you are to do what you do best, Xeron. Be the wind and the shadow and the will of Gargul. Be quick, be nimble and be as elusive as smoke. Let your blade drink its fill of Ironband blood." Sixtus gives an intentional nod of his head towards the newly arrived half-orc woman before looking back at Xeron and rolling his eyes.

Turning slightly, Sixtus' pale green eyes settle on the easy-to-look-at roguess. He begins chewing the inside of his lip while lost in momentary ponderment. He shakes his head slightly before saying, "Sanji. You know what to do. Do it well and be safe."

He then meets up with Valla and begins touching and prodding the singed skin that he healed just a short while ago. Clearing his throat, he speaks his mind. "Your bow is as good as most here, Valla. Focus your shot on their spellcasters; I know that you know how frustrating it is to get shot at while trying to cast, so do that to them."

Sixtus then goes about making sure that the staps on his studded leather armor are well adjusted, makes sure that the dwarven-fashioned axe that he was given is seated properly in its back sling, that his dagger is in his boot, that the vial of muddy-looking water is in his right pouch and that his knotty wooden staff is in hand.

"When everyone is well prepared, I would like to give a common blessing of Gargul's to everyone."

Maikill
Tuesday September 22nd, 2009 10:59:04 PM

Maikill has little to do to be ready for battle. He has just sharpened his axe, and his armor is in place. He looks about.

"Maikill ready. Good idea eat before battle. Much strength for fight. he looks around at Bosk, then to Sixtus and then to Grendel Maikill confused. Who boss for fight? Think Bosk boss, but he say no. Best tell Maikill now. In fight, need plan. Need boss or we weak. Now, where food?"

If any of you struggle in combat I will rush to the fight and heal you when your enemy is defeated. I think we should push in this fight, a few injuries should not keep us from seeing this task through, I will not retreat easily."

A faint smile appears on Xeron's face as Sixtys and Valla make an attempt to rally him around the task at hand.
"Thank you ... friends .... "
The word feels strange in his mouth. He has been a loner and a hater all his life, always in survival mode, always full of distrust and anger, knowing that life is not fair and wishing he could have righted all the wrong that were done to his poor mother. This new life was a terrible adjustment for him.

He looks at Sixtus "Thanks for the blessing Padre but as I told you I do not worship gods nor do their bidding. I know they exist but I have no use for them. "

He waits until the group depart playing with his dagger, away from the rain.

Bosk relaxes slightly as he sees the group coming together and acting more like a team. Maikill, we have no 'boss' here, but if you would like to team up I would be glad to help you. I know how in the rage of battle it can be hard for warriors like yourself to think. You need to be completely focused on what you are doing, if you want I can let you know of dangers and where it would help us most if you attack.

Addressing the rest of the group, he continues. If Penn does not want any prisoners, then I say we turn them over to the guards. I don't see the guards healing them out of mercy. They unconscious ones will most likely have to heal on their own, giving us time to complete our mission. If we destroy the Iron Band, these few will be less likely to come back and bother us.

Ethier way, I say lets go ahead and takes these people to the guards. Let them deal with them, after that, lets get this fight over with. Valla grabs his bow, making sure its stringed right, and checks out all his arrows, making sure they are in working condition.

He walks over to Katrin, and smiles Never thought I'd be as pretty as you young girl. I wonder what your camp will think of one of their own firing into their ranks?

The sword: Xeron, Sanji, and Motley can all likely sneak close without being spotted. They engage any look-outs to allow the rest of us, 'the Shield', to form a stable line of battle. This frees the sword to engage as they choose, cutting down our enemies quickly."

"Either way... I'm ready to go. Let's get this task completed."

With most everyone indicating that they are set, with the exception of Xeron who seems to always swim against the flow, Grendel moves towards the gate. She turns to members of the 'Sword' (Xeron, Sanji and Motley) saying, "You all take the lead, keep your eyes open. If you see trouble, give a shout and draw them into melee... we'll be 30 counts behind you. Remember, you all pick the where and when of the engagement... if it doesn't look good, back off and warn us. Once engaged, if you can flank... take it! Otherwise go for archers and casters. Motley, don't lose your temper til you can count 3 targets." With that she turns to the Shield, "That goes for you too Maikill, 3 targets! As for the rest of us... Padre, myself, and Maikill will be the front line as we've got decent armor. Valla, keep safe behind us and keep those arrows coming. Bosk, keep behind us as well until we engage... you're a big target and I don't want you taking shots until you can make 'em pay for it."

She catches her breath for a moment. "If you need healing, call out for healing. If you are overmatched in a fight, call for aid. None of us can promise victory, but I can promise that as long as I draw breath I will not let even one of you bleed out. Fight well. Let's go." She slings her morningstar on her belt and pulls a javelin down from off her back. She sidesteps out the gate and waits for 'the sword' to lead the way.

Silently Xeron listens to Grendel and when the half-orc is done, he gets up, shakes his head to clear his thoughts and starts walking with Sanji and Motley. He puts the ring hanging around his neck in his mouth and sucks it, as if looking for peace. As they get closer to the Ironband Camp, he says to his comrades "Time for the blades to bleed!" He pulls out his rapier and slows his pace.

He looks around knowing deep inside that the Ironband are probably waiting for them. "I smell death! Who will it be? "

Listening to the newcomers give direction is a little irritating for Sanji. Well, I know i'm no leader. It seems like it would work. I guess time will tell. She will quickly take one more swallow of water and will set her pack down in one of the wagons. Going into battle, she wants to be as light and nimble as possible. As she scans the group, she shakes her head causing a slight cascade of water and sweat from her short hair. Everything just keeps on changing. Will we be able to hold it together?

I'm ready to move out when ever you are. And if you folks are as much of a help as we are all hoping you can be, I might just have to alow you to partake in a free round of ale that I owe everyone else. Just before they enter the the enemy camp, Bosk reflects upon the groups last battle, We dove into the last battle unprepared, some changes are in order here. We need to be a little more pre-emptive in our thinking. Using the rest of his magical abilities for the day, The Horned Cleric casts Shield of Faith upon himself, and then casts resistance upon Maikill and himself. He then offers his last spell, resistance, to Padre and Motley and casts it upon which ever of them requests it.

Once they are off the weight of the world momentarily hangs on her shoulders. She did not expect her advice to be so readily agreed to. She was sure someone would have disagreed...

She shakes her head and clears her mind. There's work need doing and we're gonna git it done. She starts walking and says a prayer to Flower, May I be granted the strength to protect these good people as a mother protects her children. Where I fail to love them sufficiently, fill me with your love so that I may be made complete in my dealings with them. Bless the good that we do. Quietly, to herself she whispers, "So be it..."

Her steps quicken as she takes her place between Maikill and Padre. "If these thieves are half as good as I've heard... they'll never expect this coming."

OOC: Members of 'the Sword' are choosing our path, this is because 2 of them were on the original scouting mission. I assume we're taking a stealthy track through the trees and keeping to cover, but that's their call to make. At a leisurely pace (1/2 movement) the shield is 5 rounds behind the sword (75 ft.) with Bosk and Valla keeping behind Padre, Maikill and Grendel.

I think it's safe to assume that we're all taking a move action (to walk about 15' per round) along with a standard action (full defense) until we see a threat. Members of the sword will likely be moving silently and hiding... or at least attempting it.

- Mabutsu 1874

Penn returns in about an hour and prepares his tent for his guests, who show up a little early. The merchant puts on a jovial face and tells the group that his guests guards will be plenty protection and to have a good time for an hour or so--this is the same guest he had over the previous day. As the group leaves his face becomes solemn for a brief moment, he says nothing, just gives a slight nod of his head towards you all, then turns back to his friend and adopts the same happy face as he is usually wearing.

Xeron, and Sanji lead Motley and the rest following behind the trio, back to the Ironband's camp, which takes about thirty minutes. The muddy road winds around the various encampments until they lessen greatly, to the point where it becomes rather quiet. Upon their approach, the trio and the rest spot the Ironbands tent on the side of the road--it is still closed. The large copse of trees lay to the right of the road and further in, supposedly the Ironband's main camp. Stealthy as they can, the trio enter the woods, followed shortly behind by the rest of the group.

Nows the time to make those Spot, listen, move, hide, etc... checks. Once I get them, I'll make a map.

Sixtus then grows silent, his eyes narrowing and the feverish hunger, the same that took him over in the last battle, casts across his face. Something maniacal or other-worldly swirls through the pale green eyes. His jaw tenses, his head tilts forward like a wolf on a hunt, and all warmth has drained from his demeanor; if he was inviting to someone now, it was only an invitation for death.

As she gets near the path they visited on their earlier scouting trip, Sanji's heart jumps into her throat and her blood pounds in her ears. It takes a physical effort to calm herself. She turns to her 2 companions and shakes her head, still in a crouched position. I don't like the situation. It would be too obvious to try and come in the exact same way we did before. I think we should try a different way. Maybe go to the left this time and work our way around the camp. That way we can get a better view of what's out there. That's what we tried to do the first time, but it didn't exactly work out. If we come upon anyone on patrol, we drop them quickly and quietly. They are probably on guard because of our earlier visit.

As Xeron nods to Sanji's suggestions, thoughts are invading his mind "Am I really part of this group? IS there anything really between us other than the gold Penn promised?"

He clenches his jaws and harder thoughts are coming "Who are these people anyway? Why do I trust them? Why would I suddenly expect anything good to happen to me? I could have died in my poor mother womb but no, I had to live. The priests could have keep us but no, they chased us after I was born. Kind people could have taken mercy on my simple minded mom and her new born but no, the only ones who paid attention was the thief guild which forced her to beg. As she got sicker and sicker, I could have gotten sick and die but no, I had to be a strong child. When they attacked and killed her I could have been there to die with her but no, I was away stealing. "

All kindness and goodness disappear from his face. Hatred and anger appear "S now I am with this group trying to make sense. Nothing make sense in my life. Why do I believe I can be a good person? I am rotten to the core what that awful day I was conceived! I am about survival and profit and I will make Penn proud. There will be no survivor if I survive. "

He looks around at Sanji and Motley and the group behind them. " What a crazy plan! Going forward without reconnaissance and not knowing ANYTHING about our ennemy. This is suicide@ That orc is either working for them or insane. How do I stay alive? "

As the group approaches the copse of trees, as three had done before, Sanji suggests they do not enter the same way they did as before. With no one dissenting, Sanji leads the group around to the left side of the trees, some 50ft away and then heads in.

Some 20ft in, Sanji stops the two others and points to the ground--a thin string runs along a game trail and as the three trace it visually, they see it ends tied to a bush. On the bush are numerous small bells--obviously an early warning system. Stepping over it and continuing in another 20ft, they all stop when they see a small man, no, a dwarf, hiding behind a tree, his rear-end sticking out past one side, his head sticking out the other. It is about this same time he also spots the trio and cries out, "Intruders!"

"We need to get to them."

His eyes flash about, the pale greeness mimicking the underside of the leaves rustling in the wind. His hood is pulled forward a bit and his chocolate colored studded leather becomes increasingly black as the rain moistens spots that had not been maintained as of late.

Gripping the gift-axe, Sixtus glances at it for a moment, realizing that it is old and a bit battered...and that it has taken many-a-life since being given to him*.

Mumbling a prayer or warchant as he goes; Gatekeeper to the Realm of Shadow, release the lock and swing open wide your embracing arms as I, your wayward shepherd, round up more evil from the Wold and dispatch them to your judging scales. ooc: I rolled these on Friday, origionally rolling a listen and spot check and had intended to wait to finish my post and assist whoever attacked the dwarf first and then perform a secondary natural attack...but after the clarifications, I appear to be too far away to attack and it looks like there is no one attacking the dwarf to assist. (Is this correct?) If so, I will keep my spot and listen rolls and follow behind Maikill. If we can reach the dwarf I will keeps my assist and secondary attack. I don't know what to do if no one attacks even...i suppose I could keep the rolls and change the first attack to a disarm.

Watching Maikill charge ahead, Bosk follows after, hoping to resolve the situation quickly. As he prepares to the otheres in thier attack he yells to the orc, in his best imitation of the captive, "Not intruders, Recruites!"

The Attack -- Round 1 -- DM Jim  d20+2=10 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 1:56:28 AM

Sanji races around to meet the dwarf with the end of her blade--and it would seem as if she is the only one! Motley seemingly has stubbed his toe and Xeron has gone into hiding! As her blade cleanly misses the dwarf, her quarry yells out, "I am Hllinn, of the Earthbreaker clan, and you die today!" Wearing naught but a steel breastplate and kilt, Hllinn swings his warhammer with great force at Sanji, but manages only to slam the tree trunk he was hiding behind.

Quickly on their heels, Sanji's group rushes forward. In the distance, Hllinn's group responds to his call and runs forward--including the man Valla had shot and thought killed earlier in the day.

Battle Map

Bosk Deox (James) Bless, Shield of Faith (+2 deflection), Resistance (+1 resistance) AC 14/10/10 (16/12/12) HP 14 of 14

ooc: Once again, great maps! I hope your kids are feeling better.

Grendel (Jay) AC:16/10/16 HP 9/9
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 9:18:58 AM

Grendel steadily moves forward, now no longer concerned with stealth. She keeps her eyes open for any ambush coming from the flanks. Her javelin is pulled back as she waits for one of the Ironband to make a critical mistake and move into an open area. Her aim isn't always the best but if it connects...

Something about a half score of opponents charging down towards their position gives her that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of her stomach. Considering her allies for a moment she realizes a critical error, [i]these were not orcs... they might not engage the enemy... this plan was built on the assumption that everyone would engage. If even a few run off this assault is doomed to fail.[i]

Sweat begins to bead across her light green brow as she realizes just how uncertain she is of those she has thrown her lot in with.

=======================================
Move Action: 20' from S5 to S9
Standard Action: Ready the following action
(Throw a javelin at closest enemy entering LoS within 60' (S21) that does not benefit from cover. If everyone is covered, launch the javelin at the most likely target.)

Bosk Deox (James) Bless, Shield of Faith (+2 deflection), Resistance (+1 resistance) AC 14/10/10 (16/12/12) HP 14 of 14  d20+3=8 ; d20+4=6 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 9:38:13 AM

Watching the scene unfold before him, Bosk stares in in utter disbelief and stamps his foot into the ground in anger. We are clearly not as sneaky as we think we are. They were already prepared and ready for battle, and outnumber us once again. We need to get Sanji out of there, he thinks to himself. We also need to take out their magic users fast, that's what caused us so many problems last time. Taking a second to survey the situation**, the minotaur looks from opponent to opponent checking, to see what armor they are wearing, what race they are and what weapons they are using as he races up to join the fight, staying behind Motley and Maikill. I better wait to make sure Motley and Maikill are with me...and on my side, before I attack the dwarf. A three way battle is the last thing I need.

Just as he thinks this, he see Grendel advance forward, giving the minotaur hope as he to charges forward (Staying behind Maikill if he runs, or running around him should he choose not to engage.) all the while calling out to his companions. Sanji, get back. Maikill, go up with Motley and help her! Kill that dwarf where he stands. And everyone, lets make sure to silence anyone who can cast a spell quickly!

Oh, Gargul, I pray you have bestowed upon us trustworthy friends who will prove themselves in battle. May my weapon taste the blood of those who stand before me, and let it be they whom you are to judge tonight.

Motley AC:16/13/11 HP:16/16  d20=11 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 1:01:24 PM

Motley comes round from the distraction of the pretty butterflies that held his attention and, seeing the fray has begun, yells excitedly: Haha! No more sneaking around. Wait for me, Maikill!

He then runs to R17 and strikes at Hllinn.

Attack: 11 + 5 + 1 (bless) = 17

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7  d20+7=17 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 2:00:54 PM

Xeron moves to the next bush (H17 or something - cannot open the map) and tries to hide, hopong to be able to sneak on an ennemy.

Hide: 1d20 + 7 = 17

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6  d20+4=5 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 5:25:19 PM

The disguise was for nothing... Valla thought to himself. Then quickly figureing it wasn't worth worrying about, and battle was unavoidable anyways, the Elf keeps his temper surpressed for the moment. He sees the man he shot earilier this day and gives a surprised look, They have a healer! He says to his party, I shot that man, dropped him too! Valla points at the revived opponent.

He then takes off, west, and trys to gain cover from the jumble of rocks and roots. His heart thumping and mind racing, Rush in! Your sword will do the trick this time! NO! I'll die, my ally's need me to fire arrows. The wooden shafts are useless, one has already survived such an attack! Doesn't matter... My arrows are much better if Im alive than my sword If Im dead...

He then peers over the rocks, knocks an arrow and looks* for an opponent to shoot at**.

Actions:
Run to J11
*Spot: d20+4=5...
**Readied action: Fire arrow at any enemy within 45' or without cover and who is not engaged already. (assuming my move doesn't take up my entire round, if it does, then no attack...)

Maikill HP 14, AC15/12/13 /13, Resistance +1
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 10:12:29 PM

Cursing his lack of being in the front of the group, Maikill runs forward along the graveled path (take double move 80 feet to O-17).

"Motley, no kill dwarf without me."

Maikill is barely breathing hard as he stares down the dwarf, ready to step forward and finish his life.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List | [Drew]  d20+3=21 ;
Tuesday September 29th, 2009 11:16:08 PM

Sixtus watches as the entropy that is battle begins to unwind. There is no controlling what happens during a fight, only how you react to what happens. The delay built in to Grendel's plan was essential pre-battle but it still may be beneficial now that things are taking place.

"Bosk, we need to delay just as planned. Let the others take the dwarf and then fall back. I am going to Xeron."

With that, Sixtus, dwarven waraxe in hand, races along the left flank, under the big tree towards where Xeron is currently holding. His eyes scan the area as he goes, watching to see what they are about to face*.
