The Wold Shakes

DM Kathy
Friday January 12th, 2018 12:17:53 AM

Howling dogs on top of a hangover just seems like senseless cruelty, but then you begin to realize that this isn't usual. Several of you step outside and begin looking around.

Overhead, you see a huge flock of birds wheeling above the town. At a glance, you can see that the flock is made of many different kinds of birds--gulls and crows and loons and sandpipers and even a hawk or two. Even those of you who are not especially attuned to Nature can tell that this ain't right.

You don't have much time to figure it out, though. Suddenly, the dogs stop howling and the birds stop screeching. In the wake of all the animal activity suddenly things get eerily quiet, so quiet in fact that you could hear a pin drop if you were so inclined. It doesn’t last long.

You hear a clinking, then a rattling. You feel movement beneath the soles of your feet, the kind you might feel if a heavy cart were rumbling past--but there are no carts in the area, heavy or otherwise. A hanging clay flowerpot drops and breaks on the cobbles nearby. The buildings are behaving in ways that buildings should not--hitching and shimmying in a most undignified manner. And yes, the ground is definitely shaking. Those of you who are still a little tipsy may have trouble keeping your balance.

And then, almost as soon as you realize what's going on, it all stops. The street lurches to a halt, the clinking and rattling stop, and all is quiet again.

That is, until the denizens of Bonetown come pouring out of the buildings and into the street, to exclaim over what happened and try to assess the damage.

The calm before the storm this was... it is said animals can sense this kind of disasters before they strike. While she's fairly attuned to nature still Aexana does not share this ability. She looks at Leafy hoping he has some answers maybe...

"There could be smaller quakes coming...", she softly says to Leafy as if her talking too loud would already trigger another quake...

Then she rushes outside... she does not care much about damage the earthquake might have done but she's more worried about the sea's response to it... Is the shore line rapidly receding? There's little way of knowing where the earthquake struck but if deep below sea level it could trigger more devastating effects... (know nature 21)

"Let's just hope then we're at a safe distance here from the Twin Volcano's... "

So she looks towards the twins to see if there are any signs of activity there...

Terser echoes Aexana's concerns and thinks about emergency response to threats from the sea or volcanoes. Any response will need to be fast. Though if preparations aren't in place for Tsunami and Eruptions already, there's little they can do other than hunker down.

Aexana is worried about aftershocks and the twin volcanoes. You glance in their direction, but they seem quiet. Anyway, you don't see any smoke, so that's a good sign.

Terser is also worried about a follow-on disaster; Rill and Bralin are worried enough to get geared up.

Tahni looks around for tall and/or sturdy structures. There is Portside House itself, taller than many buildings in town, although its wooden construction isn't as sturdy as, say, stone would be. The Nine Fingers is also two stories, and probably a bit more sturdy than Portside House. There are a few more buildings of note--but for the most part, Bonetown is low-lying, single-story buildings made of wood.

Zeoll and Jozhur look around, Jozhur going so far as to climb the building for a better view. Looking toward the water, Jozhur can see that the tide is the lowest he's ever seen it.

A few people come running up from the waterside, all excited. They call for everyone to come see this low tide! It's amazing! The lowest they've seen! You can see all manner of sea creatures! Come and look!

Aex casts Ghost sound (CL11 so that equals 40 humans shouting) and suddenly Tahni's sign is accompanied by 40 humans shouting "WARNING... TSUNAMI ALERT... GET TO NINE FINGERS!!!"

DM Kathy
Monday January 15th, 2018 10:26:09 PM

At Portside House, Tahni and Aexana use their magic to warn the people of Bonetown and instruct them all to go to the Nine Fingers. Although well-meant, this might not be the best advice; there's no way the entire population of Bonetown can fit into a single tavern.

Reggie's primary concern is for her son; she scoops up Ky and hightails it for the Nine Fingers.

Zeoll revises the instruction a little, simply telling people to get to high ground. The ground does slope upward at the outskirts--the real question is whether people can get there in time.

Meanwhile, at Bralin's suggestion, Rill teleports them to the docks, where they begin urging people to board the Lionfish. Other ships, too, are beginning to urge people aboard, even as they pull up anchors and cast off from the dock. Unfortunately, because of all the other ships in the port, there simply isn't enough time to maneuver away and out to sea before the wave hits. You'll have to trust to Tula's seamanship to keep the Lionfish upright and in one piece.

So, that's where you are when the wave hits: Tahni and Aexana (and Terser I assume) climbing onto the roof of Portside house; Reggie with little Ky climbing onto the roof of the Nine Fingers; Zeoll (I assume) leading a group fleeing to high ground; Rill and Bralin aboard the Lionfish.

When it first arrives, the wave doesn't seem significantly taller than other waves you've seen, and for a moment--especially at the docks--you begin to feel that you might have made a lot of fuss over nothing. And then the wave comes crashing in--and it keeps coming. And coming, and coming. The wave perhaps didn't look very tall, but it was carrying a lot of water, and now the water rushes in through the streets and buildings of Bonetown.

At the docks, captains and crew struggle to keep their ships upright. Some succeed; some do not. The Lionfish stays afloat, but washes inland, crashing into building after building. So far, the ship is sturdier than the houses it hits, but how long can it withstand the punishment?

In town, buildings splinter into matchsticks, trees topple, and fleeing townsfolk disappear under tons of rushing water. Portside House shakes and creaks. One wall gives way, but the remaining walls and roof remain standing--for now. Water crashes through the windows of the Nine Fingers, trapping people who hadn't yet managed to make it up the stairs. The roof is crowded, but although the building shakes and people shriek in terror, the building seems to be holding up.

On the outskirts of town, people are still running. Some couldn't keep up, but there's no time to go back and check on them. The water hasn't reached here, but that doesn't mean it won't.

Everywhere, the noise is unbelievable: pounding water; cracking buildings; falling trees; the screams of the terrified, the trapped, and the dying. It sounds like the end of the Wold.

As the Lionfish is washed inland, Rill is alarmed to see the ship interacting with buildings. That's not how things are supposed to work. Given that we encouraged bystanders to board the Lionfish for their safety, he cannot let the ship go down - or further destroy buildings in town.

Rill will stand at the bow of the ship and cast Summon Monster VII, calling forth a Greater Water Elemental. A huge, translucent column of water rises rom the surrounding water, and two sparkling points of light regard the priest that summoned it.

With his Tongues ability, Rill is able to speak in a voice like a roaring river, "This ship cannot be in this place. You will gently move this vessel back into the harbor where it belongs. Use care to not shake anyone loose, or crush any in the water as you do so. Once that is done, do you best to move any other nearby ships out as well."

He then tells the crew to lower ropes to anyone floating nearby and bring them aboard as best they can, avoiding the great creature as they do so.

The cracking sound is worrying... Aexana hopes the building will hold.
Perhaps now a wall of stone could help indeed... Aex conjures up a wedge shaped wall (like the bow of a ship perhaps?) in front of the building hoping this will not stop the water, but at least take away some of the pressure on the building so it has a better chance to hold against the raging water.

DM Kathy
Tuesday January 16th, 2018 10:31:59 PM

After the wave hits, you continue trying to save as many people as you can.

Jozhur grabs his Bottle of Air and goes down into the flooded common room of the Nine Fingers to rescue people. One by one, you grab flailing townsfolk and shove them partway up the stairs, where willing hands await to pull them the rest of the way. You keep going, even as you encounter more and more lifeless forms, pushing them up the stairs as well. Are they already dead? Revivable? You don't know; all you can do is find as many as you can, as quickly as you can.

On the roof of Portside House, Tahni summons a group of water elementals, who begin helping people get to pieces of floating wreckage. Then Aexana conjures a Wall of Stone to help protect the house from the waves, and the elementals start bringing people to it, instead. They climb atop the wall and cling for dear life. Leafy, meanwhile, is pulling people up onto the roof.

Terser, with his trusty elephant, and Zeoll have helped a large group of townsfolk up onto the lower slopes of the volcano. There appears to be no need to climb trees or Teleport; the waters don't seem to be coming this far. You are able to move back and pull a few more people to safety.

Rill has summoned a water elemental of his own, which he instructs to help guide the Lionfish back where it belongs. It is able to complete this task fairly easily, and begins doing the same for other ships--the problem now being there's nothing to tie them to, and no way to keep them from drifting a bit. Their crews do their best to keep them from banging into one another.

Bralin activates his winged boots, and moves to pluck people from the water. You rescue several people this way, bringing some back to the Lionfish, some to other ships, and some to Portside House, depending on what's closest.

But, even as you work to save more townsfolk, a new threat presents itself. Meteors begin streaking across the sky, in brilliant, sparkling colors, trailing bursts of flame behind them. Most are high enough that they simply cross the sky overhead, but a few of them seem to land in the water--including one that splashes not too far from the harbor. And--is it your imagination, or did a faint cloud of red mist puff up when the meteor hit the water? (Jozhur probably did not see any of this, but the rest of you saw at least some of it.)

The water is beginning to recede. Near the outskirts, Terser helps Zeoll onto the elephant, and they begin wading back toward the harbor.

At the Nine Fingers, Jozhur has dived several times in a row now without coming into contact with any other bodies, alive or dead. The water is extremely murky, so there may still be bodies down there, but they're going to have to wait until the waters subside. Reggie was able to help a few people to safety, and now she's back on the roof with Ky. You see Terser and Zeoll heading back into town on an elephant.

At Portside House, Tahni and Aexana see nobody left to help. And, as the waters subside, the people perched atop Aexana's stone wall begin looking a bit more comfortable. People clinging to debris are reaching the relative safety of the wall, or the remaining trees, or some half-toppled buildings. Also, Tahni is quite sure the volcano had nothing to do with the meteors.

In the harbor, Bralin alights on the deck of the Lionfish while Rill mutters something about dogs and cats. People on the other ships are intrigued by the meteor that landed not too far away. "We should sail out and take a look," a few of them say.

However, that quickly morphs into "the Black Lions should sail out and take a look...."

As the waters continue to recede, the Black Lions gather on the Lionfish. Tula warns you that she hasn't had time to fully re-provision, so any trips need to be short ones. However, since the meteor went down in sight of Bonetown, you don't believe this trip will take you very far.

The dock is gone, along with much of the waterfront, so you don't so much "cast off" as "maneuver through the other ships and out of the harbor." There are a couple of near-mishaps, but at last you are sailing in the general direction of where you saw the meteor fall.

Of course, it's going to be difficult to find the exact spot where the meteor went down. It's not like it left a hole in the water or anything; you're probably going to have to use divination spells or something to....

Huh. Will you look at that. A mat of blood-red seaweed floats on the water in one specific spot. The seaweed is like nothing any of you have seen before.

When you see the red seaweed, Tahni looks at it with her Arcane Sight, but whatever this stuff is, it isn't magical.

Terser decides to poke it, though Bralin advises caution. As Aexana and Jozhur keep a wary eye on the stuff, Terser is able to hook a small clump and pull it out of the water.

The stuff is bright red in color, and looks a lot like grass--though not like any sea-grass or seaweed any of you have ever seen. And--did it just move? By itself? Impossible. Must have been the wind. Or maybe Terser isn't holding it completely steady. Because seaweed doesn't move on its own and neither does grass.

But whatever the stuff is, it seems to mark the spot where the meteor fell.

If Terser’s sample is moving, that’s a different matter.

"Hmmm. It seems we will need to go into the depths if we are to investigate what fell from the sky. If we are to descend, I can allow us to breathe under water. But first, we need to determine if this seaweed is going to strangle us on the way down.

“Tula, can you take a sounding to see how deep we are here? While we’re figuring that out, maybe I can find out a little more information about what we’ll face.”

Rill will light some incense and then cast a Divination spell, asking “What will we face if we investigate the meteor site below us?” (10 min casting time, 83% chance of success. Rolled 70 - success!)

Deathwatch - Range 30'. You instantly know whether each creature within the area is dead, fragile (alive and wounded, with 3 or fewer hit points left), fighting off death (alive with 4 or more hit points), healthy, undead, or neither alive nor dead (such as a construct). Deathwatch sees through any spell or ability that allows creatures to feign death.

Divination - ... a divination spell can provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within 1 week. The advice granted by the spell can be as simple as a short phrase, or it might take the form of a cryptic rhyme or omen. If your party doesn't act on the information, the conditions may change so that the information is no longer useful. The base chance for a correct divination is 70% + 1% per caster level, to a maximum of 90%. If the die roll fails, you know the spell failed, unless specific magic yielding false information is at work.

Using Deathwatch, Rill can tell that the seaweed is alive and healthy, though perhaps not as healthy as it could be. He asks Tula to take a sounding, and begins casting Divination.

Meanwhile, Terser holds the seaweed as steady as he can, while he and Jozhur watch it suspiciously. It does not appear to be moving.

At Zeoll's suggestion, Aexana attempts to communicate with the plants. She hears what is this place?...the water tastes funny....the sky is wrong....please don't eat me.

Reggie suggests moving to a new location so you don't have to go through the seaweed to get to the meteor, but really, the seaweed isn't covering that much of the surface. The patch can't be more than 10 feet in diameter; there's plenty of room to get around it.

Tula reports that the water is between 6 and 7 fathoms deep, or about 40 feet.

And then Rill receives the following answer to his Commune: Pain, suffering, disease. And if you win through, a chance to restore Balance.

You seem to have learned all you can from clues on the surface. If you want to know more, you'll need to go down and look.

@DM Kathy, is a plant companion like Leafy able to go underwater with the rest of us? Does a plant breath? They need oxygen but do plants require a Waterbreathing spell?

If Leafy is unable to come along Aexana will ask him to guard the Lionfish until they come back... if ever that is - but she'd rather not leave her companion behind.

The Greenmage would have loved communicating some more with this strange plant being and the things it said makes her wonder where then it came from. It came falling from the sky... our sky is strange? THe water tastes funny? Odd... then it knows water but not like 'our' water?!? Very intriguing.

Realizing that there's nothing more to be learned up here, you make your preparations to dive beneath the waves. Some of you cast spells, some of you already have items to help you adapt, and at least one of you turns into a dolphin. [OOC: For now, I'm ruling that Leafy can go for an extended period without having to breathe air, because I'd hate to have him miss out on this adventure. We may need to revisit that in the future.]

Once your preparations are complete, you variously jump, dive, and slip into the water. The sun shining through the red seaweed gives a weird reddish tinge to the ocean as you begin your dive. You don't see any fish or sea-creatures, which strikes most of you as odd.

The light is growing dimmer, but you believe you are getting close to the bottom, and to the meteorite you want to look at. And....there seems to be blood in the water. Rather a lot of it.

And now you are close enough to see the source. Over a dozen fish and other sea-creatures are thrashing about near the ocean floor, unable to swim. It's easy to see why--they have been horribly mutated. One small fish has sprouted enormous tusks, which seem to have ripped bloody holes in its skin on the way out. You see a ray covered in fur, dragged down by the weight of it. Some kind of large fish--a sturgeon maybe--has sprouted feathers and insect-like legs. Everywhere you look, you see twisted, hideous abomination.

Also, there's a very large whale heading toward you. It, too, appears to have been mutated. Whales are normally gentle creatures, but....this one seems upset.

Rill casts a Quickened Prayer. He uses his Deathwatch ability and finds that the creatures are alive, but not healthy. Well, the whale seems healthy enough. But the rest are dying.

Bralin casts a Shield of Faith.

The whale continues its charge. Aexana tries to talk to it, but it does not respond--unless moving in to attack counts as responding.

Because it's not stopping. Rill throws a Blade Barrier in its path, and Terser attacks it. Tahni dodges out of the way, and Zeoll attempts to use his Laughing Touch.

The whale manages to dodge at the last second, so only some of the Blade Barrier damage gets through. Since this fight is happening in three dimensions, battlefield control is going to be extremely difficult; the whale is moving to swim over the barrier when Terser attacks it. He hits, and does damage. Zeoll is able to make his touch attack, but it seems to have no effect. [OOC: Or I assume it doesn't; this is mind-affecting, yes?]

The whale attempts to slap Terser with its tail. It hits! Terser takes 57 damage and must succeed on a DC 34 Fortitude save or be dazed for 1 round.

I think everyone has Freedom of Movement who needs it, but just for reference, here are the rules for underwater combat.

I'm going to try to do this fight without a map, because I can't figure out how to depict a three-dimentional battlefield on a two-dimensional map. The whale is Colossal in size.

Jozhur hesitated a moment, hoping Aex could talk the whale down, because who wants to fight a whale. With talking obviously not working, Jozhur moves to flank the whale and attacks.

Jozhur's shadow also separates from him, moving to flank the whale with the shadowdancer and tries to sap the enraged whale of some strength.

Jozhur and his shadow split up to attack the whale. Only Jozhur's hasted attack hits, but by that time the shadow was in position, so the sneak attack bonus applied. The shadow is able to drain some strength.

Zeoll retreats to cast a spell.

[So, in case you missed it, Jozhur's 27 missed, but Bralin's 28 hit. Draw your own conclusions. :) ]

Aexana casts a protective spell on Terser, while Rill keeps an eye on the other animals. They don't seem to be doing anything other than suffering.

Tahni casts a Suffocation spell, but it doesn't seem to affect the whale that much. [Fort save 36. Also, the whale has an extraordinary ability called Hold Breath, and I"m not sure how they intersect. Although I don't think it's going to matter.]

Zeoll's Fae Friend turns out to be a water elemental, who smacks the whale. Zeoll begins summoning another friend.

Workmanlike, Bralin keeps hacking at the whale.

Reggie swims over and attacks, but her blow isn't strong enough to penetrate the whale's thick skin.

Terser is dazed, and Aexana is unsure what to do.

Jozhur isn't feeling so good. He is able to make his attacks, though he notices that he doesn't seem quite as sharp as he normally is. However, his shadow's flank gives him just enough of an advantage to finish off the whale. Blood and whale bits drift through the water as the creature slowly collapses.

Jozhur still isn't feeling so good. His stomach is churning, and the blood in the water isn't helping. Also his shoulder, where the whale bit him, is starting to itch.

Statis - When you need to keep track of comrades who may get separated, status allows you to mentally monitor their relative positions and general condition. You are aware of direction and distance to the creatures and any conditions affecting them: unharmed, wounded, disabled, staggered, unconscious, dying, nauseated, panicked, stunned, poisoned, diseased, confused, or the like. Once the spell has been cast upon the subjects, the distance between them and the caster does not affect the spell as long as they are on the same plane of existence. If a subject leaves the plane, or if it dies, the spell ceases to function for it.

The battle over, everyone is concerned about Jozhur, who doesn't seem to be doing so well. Rill can tell that Jozhur has the Sickened condition, and is also suffering from some kind of disease. Well, he is until he drinks Aexana's potion, which clears that right up! Jozhur is no longer Sickened, and no longer has the disease. Reggie's Lesser Restoration is not needed.

Meanwhile, Zeoll's water elemental continues to attack the whale carcass. The twigjack, when it arrives, attacks the dead whale once, but then breaks for the surface, unable to breathe down here.

Tahni spends a moment contemplating her spell selection, which perhaps isn't ideal for underwater combat.

They don't know about the creatures, except that some creatures eat plants and they don't like that. The water does taste funny. They can't see the sky down here, so they're not sure what you're asking about. Asked where they are from, they reply "home." They do seem....foreign to you, in ways that you can't quite quantify. You think maybe some of them are moving on their own.

Bralin, Rill, and Reggie press on, eager to find the meteorite. You are within sight of the ocean floor, drifting about 5 feet above it. The meteorite is not right here, and of course in the dim light many of you can't see very far. The strange red seaweed, however, seems more plentiful in one specific direction.

Aexana seems to be in her natural environment so Tahni sticks close to her.

"I'd say our red friends are pointing the way... Let's proceed with caution... "

Leafy follows Aexana and while his face doesn't reveal much about his feelings, you can tell he had rather stayed aboard the Lionfish. After all... he doesn't do well with salt water...

Aexana slowly swims towards the area where the weeds grow thicker. Keeping an eye out for trouble and hoping nothing bad happens... DUH... (know nature 26 / percepton 24)

As she goes, she keeps chatting to the red seaweed... soothing... calm... not provoking.

Terser thank Rill and Tahni for the healing. While he can bear more wounds than most, it's still not very fun. And with infection running rampant, getting this bloodwater into open wounds is probably not the best idea.

"Any chance of another elemental? They would probably be easily able to secure a chain to the meteorite."

Your wounds healed, your disease banished, you resume your search for the meteorite. You move toward where the weird blood-red seaweed is thickest.

Aexana tries to talk to it, but responses continue to be frustrating. Home is like home. One especially helpful clump of seaweed adds that home is not like here. How they got here is variously described as magic, fire, cold, and great nothingness.

You've only gone about 50 feet when you see the signs of the meteor's impact. There are more mutated creatures here, struggling and dying. There are rocks and debris that seem to have been disturbed where the meteor landed. And, up ahead, you think you see a glimpse of the meteorite itself.

Jozhur keeps his eyes on the mutated creatures, not wanting to be sick again. He approaches the object with caution, wondering how a meteorite seemingly brought living vegetation here. Or did the meteorite do something to the vegetation already present? Would the meteorite make the Black Lions sick and mutated like the sea life?

Seeing what might be the, once Rill is within 60' of the thing, he'll cast Detect Magic to see if it's enchanted, and the relative strength of that magic. He'll also attempt to use Spellcraft (rolled a 27) to determine the powers of the thing, or specific magical effects in waters nearby.

(Spellcraft 27 will identify the properties of a magic item up to Caster Level 12, or a magical spell effect up to Spell Level 7.)

Taking any further to the sea weed might be considered harassing so Aex gives up.
With the meteor just up ahead she's more concerned about that. She does share's Jozhur's thought on what would protect the Black Lions from getting the same afflictions as the disfigured fish...

You are understandably cautious about approaching the meteorite. Zeoll suggests sending a summoned creature to examine it.

Tahni reminds her friends that the water might still be hot.

Jozhur and Terser are worried about the infected creatures, but so far, nothing seems aggressive.

Bralin presses on, and is now the closest to the meteorite.

Rill casts a Detect Magic. The meteorite is indeed magic, but when you try to concentrate on its aura, you find that its strength is overwhelming. Magical backlash sizzles behind your eyes, and you lose your concentration.

Aexana and Jozhur begin to hear a faint humming sound.
