In the Arena

DM Kathy
Sunday October 1st, 2017 7:52:48 PM

After a night of feasting and partying with the elves of Karri, you retire to your guesthouse for some rest, and then return to Dirt City.

Nothing has changed in your brief absence, except that now and again you hear people talking about the coming Arena fight, and whether it will be any good. Oddsmakers are grumbling because your abilities are not known and the Teeth are not divulging the nature of the beasts you're going to be fighting.

You still have a couple of days, if you want to make preparations.

[Also, please take 20,000 XP for the previous two scenes.]

(Brock) Jozhur AC24 / Touch 17/Flat 17--CMD 27--HP105/105  d20+17=30 ; d20+17=27 ;
Sunday October 1st, 2017 11:32:52 PM

Jozhur mills about the town, not sure what to do with himself. He spends the downtime in taverns, likely with Reggie, assuming she does the same. Just for kicks, he tries to dig up some rumors about what beasts they may be fighting, knowing full well they will only be rumors. If any seem credible he may question the person further.

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23
Sunday October 1st, 2017 11:58:13 PM

Rill will ask about where he can place a bet on the match. He will go there with his white robes, symbol to Gargul and WLA badge clearly visible.

Then he will place a 50 GP bet AGAINST the party, and include a note that any proceeds upon his death should go to his widow Goodie Bess in Bonetown. He makes sure that this note is just folded and not sealed.

He will later share this with his friends.

"So, I'd say a day from now, you should be able to get pretty good odds if you bet on us winning."

RobC - Tahni Wyrmrider -- AC 20/13/17 -- CMD 19 -- HP 125/125
Monday October 2nd, 2017 7:03:17 AM

Tahni nods and grins. Rill is indeed cunning. She makes a mental note never to play cards with him when gold is on the table.

When the party next gather together, Tahni puts the question out there: "What tactics and roles to you usually employ in battle? What would you have me do to help?"

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23
Monday October 2nd, 2017 5:14:25 PM

Rill responds to Tahni, "Hmmm. Tactics. Generally speaking, I my job is to make sure none of our party visits Gargul prematurely, so my first objective is to keep everyone alive."

Secondarily, I do what I can to empower the combatants in our group to be more mobile and effective since they generally deal more damage than I can. Terser does well with his glaive as a reach weapon and has an adamantine gauntlet for close-up work, Jozhur does best when he can flank or surprise an opponent, and Bralin and Reggie just tear stuff up.

"I then focus on battle field control, that is I try to create barriers and such to change the battlefield in our favor. Finally, I usually have some limited ability to inflict some damage, but not much really and it tends to be a last resort.

"If we will truly face beasts, they tend to be weak willed - you and Zeoll may be most effective against those. But if we face outsiders, it's a different story and they tend to resist our magics.

"By the way, how do you access your magic? What kind of spell caster are you?"

(Tahni has been a bit vague on this point so far.)

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)
Monday October 2nd, 2017 6:26:57 PM

Zeoll takes this as a chance to reinforce his spell tendencies and how to fight around them.

(1) If he casts his Peaceball spell (ie, Calm Emotions), then Zeoll will point out any creatures that are affected -- DO NOT ATTACK AFFECTED CREATURES. Either attack the ones that are not affected, or take the chance to buff and maneuver.

(2) Zeoll tends to summon creatures from the fey realm, but he seldom knows who will show up, or what they will do. Just please go with the flow! Zeoll will try to ensure that they harm only enemies.

(3) If Zeoll charms or suggests a creature, please only attack it if it attacks first.

(4) If you could use a Mage Armor spell, let Zeoll know and he'll cast one on you.

(5) Zeoll can go invisible as a move action, but it only lasts for a round. Do not be surprised to see him blip in and out.

(6) Zeoll has TWO magic horns to create a magic circle vs evil around himself almost all the time. Stick within 10 ft of Zeoll to get a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus to saves vs evil enemies.

(MikeK)Bralin (AC32 / T17 / FF29)CMD 29 - HP 141/141)
Monday October 2nd, 2017 6:27:10 PM

Bralin chuckles at Rill's telling of his bet.
"Well done. Well done indeed."

In response to Tahni's question on tactics, the dwarf shrugs, and holds up an axe.
"I find the biggest foe and hit it with this."

After a bit of reflection, he adds,
"However, with the next leviathan, I may circle around to approach from behind first."

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)
Monday October 2nd, 2017 6:36:49 PM

Extra: In the days before the fight, Zeoll works on crafting his new horn.

In the evenings, he uses his Read Dream ability to try to get some kind of hint as to what the party will face in the coming fight.

RobC - Tahni Wyrmrider -- AC 20/13/17 -- CMD 19 -- HP 125/125
Monday October 2nd, 2017 8:25:49 PM

Tahni chuckles to Bralin. Finding the biggest foe and hitting it is true dwarven tradition!

She looks a little sheepishly to Rill.

"I know I haven't been specific with what sort of spells I can cast. The truth is, I want you to like me and I don't want to step on any toes.

My spells are varied and depend on the situation.

I have some summoning spells prepared. Ever heard of a lesser immortal summons? I could summon my friend Hyvward into the fight. He's pretty resistant to all sorts of things

I also have quite a few spells to weaken people. Enervation, Suffocation, Waves of Fatigue, Mass Pain Strike and Eyebite all do the trick here

If someone needs some healing I can also help with that. Nowhere near as well as you can though, Rill. I'm still learning these things.

I've got a few other spells prepared for combat, just in case: Haste, Fireball, Telekinesis, Dispel Magic.

Then there's a whole bag of utility spells: Gust of Wind, Web, Black Tentacles, Stinking Cloud, Flaming Sphere, Shatter, and so on.

Excluding cantrips I can cast a little over 50 spells per day. If there's a wizard spell or two that might help the group, let me know and I will try and prepare it"

(Brock) Jozhur AC24 / Touch 17/Flat 17--CMD 27--HP105/105
Monday October 2nd, 2017 8:55:07 PM

Jozhur chimes in with his response to Tahni. "Rillet summed it up fairly well. I try to surround the enemy with our better fighters, or attack from the shadows. I'm also a decent shot with this longbow, in the event using my sword isn't practical. If you have ways to render an enemy immobile, I can strike with great efficiency."

He also adds that his boots allow him to cast haste on himself for up to a minute and a half per day.

Terser (Warren) [AC22/13/19 - CMD 30 - HP 172/172, DR 1/-] (25% no crit, rage 30/30, channel 5/5)
Monday October 2nd, 2017 9:01:33 PM

Terser expands a bit on Rill's rundown.

"I focus on big powerful strikes and maneuvering to create advantages for the other, especially Joz. I can also share my rage with our melee fighters. And please don't concern yourself if I get tied up by something, I'm quite good at freeing myself from tight spots. For a short time at least."

DM Kathy
Monday October 2nd, 2017 10:21:06 PM

Rill hits upon the idea of manipulating the odds so that you guys can make some money on the side. Somewhat to your disappointment, you find that the odds are already trending against you. "People like to bet on the monsters," the bookie shrugs.

It's unclear whether Rill's stunt moved the needle or not. By the eve of the fight, your odds are 3-1 against, and not likely to change much. If you want to place a modest bet (less than 100 gp), you can. Any more than that will raise suspicion--if you can even find a bookie willing to take it.

In the meantime, you discuss strategy while Zeoll works on his magic items. He also attempts to read his dreams. You get the impression of three different creatures: one with quills and claws, one with tentacles, and one that seems to be a giant bug of some kind.

The day of the fight arrives, and you present yourselves at the Arena. Brunda is there, along with Tobias and Zod. Zod will be staying with Tobias, rather than fighting with you guys, just to make sure the House of Teeth keep their word. Brunda shows you a chest that glows like a beacon if you cast Detect Magic. "This is your prize," he says. "Tobias goes free regardless, but if you win--you also get this."

Then the Master of Ceremonies is at your side, asking how you want to be introduced.

Also, here is a preliminary map. Place yourselves anywhere in the bottom two rows.

RobC - Tahni Wyrmrider -- AC 20/13/17 -- CMD 19 -- HP 125/125
Tuesday October 3rd, 2017 8:14:50 AM

Tahni gives a polite nod to the master of ceremonies, before whispering a question "Are we allowed to start casting spells now, or would it be considered poor form?"

No doubt there are a number of preparatory spells the party could cast, but it would all depend on what the protocol is here.

OOC: Added an icon to the map for Tahni

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23
Tuesday October 3rd, 2017 4:12:06 PM

Rill uses Prestidigitation from an item to make sure his robes are pressed and bright white.

"Tahni, we had asked about rules and limitations regarding spell casting. The only thing we were told was that if we sent a creature to another plane it would not count as a victory."

As it becomes apparent that we will be in the arena soon, Rill will cast Air Walk on Terser, Bralin and himself. He will also cast Detect Magic and See Invisible on himself and Fly on Reggie just before we go in.

oooo map perspective. nice

Tentacles, eh? What do you think captain? Sounds like that one has a long reach. Should I go after that one? Or focus on something that will be surprised by the length of my weapon?"

Regardless of the answer, Terser prepares to cast one of his spells to bolster the courage of his comrades, and will cast it before the battle if that turns out to be kosher.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)
Tuesday October 3rd, 2017 6:20:32 PM

Zeoll tells his friends about his dreams before they prep spells. Himself, since he is not expecting to face people, will swap out his Hold Person spells from his usual complement for Delay Poison and Remove Paralysis. He also swaps his Locate Object for Prayer. The old liontaur sounds his horn of goodness and casts his Mage Armors an hour before it is time to enter the Arena. Does anyone else want a mage armor?! If so, Zeoll is happy to oblige.

He asks the master of ceremonies to introduce the group as the Lionfishers of Bonetown, slayers of demigods and enemies of all who trade in slaves. That's in addition to any titles or names suggested by others.

[OOC: Still gotta add most recent items to my PC sheet and jigger my AC etc.]

Reggie really enjoys her time with Jozhur, she actually is fumbling over herself at times.

Then comes the time for the arena, Reggie had contemplated betting but relizing that she may get herself into some trouble she decides it best not to. She does however pass about 50 gold on to someone else to place a bet. assuring them it would be a good idea to bet on the Lionfish.

Reggie reluctantly accepts the magic, "feels like cheating, relying on so much magic to win, kind of eliminates any real talent." she mutters to herself, not to thrilled with the over abundance of magic being used.

The Master of Ceremonies doesn't seem to care whether you cast spells or not. You've got two rounds before he begins his introductions.

"Presenting!" he begins. His voice must be magically amplified, because it carries through the arena. "The challengers, brought all the way from the Middle Seas--The Black Lions, the Lionfishers of Bonetown, slayers of demigods, and enemies of all who trade in slaves!" Some cheers. A few boos. A lot of jeering.

"And the champions of the House of Teeth!" he continues. "The Bandersnatch! The Froghemoth! Aaaand....the Vemerak!" Loud cheers. One by one, gates open on the far side of the arena, spilling out monsters.

The bandersnatch is a six-limbed beast with a row of barbed quills down its back. The froghemoth is a giant three-eyed frog with tentacles. The vemerak seems like some alien, clawed insect with three tentacular tails.

[To know more, the bandersnatch is a Knowledge Arcana, and the other two are Knowledge Dungeoneering.]

And the map.

"Share my pain!" she cries as she bites down hard on her wrist

At the start of the fight, Jozhur's shadow disappears underground and moves towards the enemies, planning to attack them as they pass. Jozhur steps to the side and fires a couple of arrows at the far left enemy (Bandersnatch?), hoping the other two are sedated by Zeoll's spell.

Tahni appears to lose her mind--or perhaps she just has a really unorthodox spellcasting style. She draws her own blood, and summons a small Treant, which promptly disappears.

Zeoll summons a Lantern Archon, which buffs Terser. You try to recall what you may have heard about these critters. About the Vemerak (the one in the center), you know nothing. About the Froghemoth (the one on the right that looks like a frog), you know that it does not have Spell Resistance, but it does resist fire. You cast your Peaceball, but you are unable to overcome the Vemerak's Spell Resistance. The Froghemoth makes its save.

Rill casts a series of spells, ending with summoned wasps.

Terser buffs his companions, then spends a moment calling for true aim.

Jozhur fires once at the Bandersnatch, hitting and doing damage. You don't recall hearing anything about these critters, though you do recall that Vemeraks are immune to acid, electricity, poison, and disease. Oh, and mind-affecting spells, which is great news for Zeoll.

Bralin also tries to remember anything useful about these creatures, but comes up empty. He uses a wand to fire a Scorching Ray at the Froghemoth. He hits! The creature appears to take normal damage.

The bandersnatch might not be too bright, but it knows what wasps are and it wants to avoid them. It skirts the swarms, then fires 4 barbed quills at Jozhur! Three of them hit! Jozhur takes 24 points of damage from 3 quills, and must succeed at three Reflex saves (DC 28). If you fail a save, that quill becomes lodged in your flesh, creating ongoing pain that causes you to become sickened until the quill is removed.

Also, the damage Jozhur did to the bandersnatch is completely healed this turn.

The Vemerek moves! It carries with it a cloud of spores that have a weird dampening effect on magic. It dispels one spell from Terser! (Whichever spell has the highest caster level.) Then it tries to bite Terser! It hits! Terser takes 18 damage!

The Froghemoth approaches! It tries to bite Bralin! It misses!

And the map.

Then he uses his Quicken Rod to also cast Prayer, granting all his allies a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks, while each of our foes takes a –1 penalty on such rolls. With a 40' radius burst, this should affect all but the Bandersnatch.

Zeoll blinks as his spell has no effect, but that's the way the faerie flies, sometimes. He looks at the giant froggie. If it seems to be staying in its Blade Barrier, not wanting to emerge through the blades, then he casts a Command spell on it to FLEE! That's a will save vs DC 22.

If the froggie DOES step through the blades, then Zeoll commands it to HALT. Then the liontaur takes out a scroll (move action)

First, I realize I only processed half of Tahni's post yesterday. So yes, the three critters should be staggered, and they had a round when they weren't. So when Tahni dismisses the spell, or it runs out, they'll get an extra round when they're still staggered and it should even out. You know, if they live that long.

Also, Tahni made her Knowledge checks--so you know that the Bandersnatch has fast healing 10 and can regrow its quills each round. You also know that it is immune to fear, paralysis, poison, and sleep. You know that the Froghemoth can be slowed by electricity. You know that the Vemerak has SR 25 and DR 5/--.

This round, Tahni hits the Bandersnatch with an Ennervation, thereby making the DM do more math, which is just cruel. :) Meanwhile, her summoned Treant moves up to attack the Bandersnatch! He hits! Unfortunately, he also dislodges a quill, which does 3 piercing damage to Hyvward! Hyvward also has to make a DC 28 Reflex save or the quill lodges itself in his flesh! Well, bark. Whatever. Anyway, he will be sickened. Also, he's standing in front of the Vemerek. Did you mean to have him attack the Vemerak instead? The Bandersnatch is the one off to the left.

Rill casts a Blade Barrier around the Froghemoth, then casts Prayer to bolster his allies and hamper his opponents. The Vemerak is the only one with SR, but Rill's check was more than enough.

As the Froghemoth appears to hesitate, Zeoll commands it to FLEE! It does! It runs right through the Blade Barrier, and takes 49 damage! The Lantern Archon casts Aid on Bralin.

Terser rages, sharing the effect with teammates if they want it. His furious strike at the Vemerak hits and does damage! (Although the critter has a tiny bit of DR.)

Jozhur isn't sure what it will take to remove the quills, but he's pretty sure it's kind of involved. He moves up to the Vemerak! I see nothing that says staggered creatures can't take AoOs, so it will take one! It misses! Jozhur's attack also misses! But his shadow hits, and makes the DM do still more math!

Bralin steps up and whacks the Vemerak with his axe! He hits and does damage!

The Bandersnatch's wounds close! It flings another volley of quills, this time targeting Reggie! Even accounting for the negative levels, three of them hit! Reggie takes 21 points of damage, and must succeed at three DC 28 Reflex saves, or be sickened by a quill embedded in her flesh!

The Vemerak shifts sideways (5-foot step), and dispels a spell from Jozhur! (Whichever spell has the highest caster level.) Then it breathes a line of acid, hitting Jozhur, Tahni, and Zeoll! (It also hits Hyvward, if Hyvward is there and not over by the Bandersnatch). Everybody hit takes 70 points of acid damage, DC 24 Reflex save for half. In addition, each square....ghaa. I'm just going to quote the rule verbatim: If the breath weapon deals damage to a living fleshy creature, the acid creates a transparent cloud of foul-smelling vapor that fills that creature's space and persists for 1 round. Any creature in or passing through the cloud must make a DC 24 Fortitude save or be nauseated for 1d4 rounds.

The Froghemoth spent its turn running away from Zeoll!

Zeoll has no desire to reach the stick, so he pumps a heroic +8 into his saving throw, using his shield to save him from the acid. His save depends on whether the enemy is evil or not ... He rolls a save of 26, or 28 if it is evil. His heroism saves him! He takes 35 damage.

Zeoll now reads his scroll of Summon Fey Friend VI. That's a CL13 spell, and Zeoll has a caster level of only 10, so he has to roll a 13 or higher on a d20+10 check ... he gets an 11! Natural one! Zeoll laughs as the scroll misfires! His wisdom check to avoid a mishap is a 24, so the only injury is to the wasted scroll and to Zeoll's deflated pride.

That's it for Zeoll this round! Alas!

(ooc: the barrier I was talking about for the Bandersnatch was the Insect Plague. In retrospect, Regie attacking where she did may have kept the monster from moving around like it is now - so maybe Reggie was the barrier!)

Rill sees his friends focus on the Bandersnatch, so he throws a Blade Barrier around the wounded Froghemoth, hoping to hold the creature at bay until the Bandersnatch is dispatched.

"Beware the Bandersnatch. That thing looks frumious!"

Then Rill steps forward 5', and uses his Quicken Rod for the second time, healing Reggie for 28 more points of damage. Finally, Rill uses his Dimensional Hop ability to move himself and Reggie forward 25' so she can attack this round.

"He's all yours Reggie."

Both Zeoll and his archon cast spells to bolster Reggie.

Tahni hits the Bandersnatch with another Ennervation.

Terser casts Freedom of Movement on Bralin.

Jozhur and his shadow companion begin systematically carving up the Bandersnatch and sapping its strength!

Rill throws up another Blade Barrier around the Froghemoth. He heals Reggie, then hops her closer to the battle. Reggie responds by further tearing up the Bandersnatch.

Bralin moves up on the Bandersnatch. He does provoke an Attack of Opportunity, but the depleted creature can't harm the heavily-armored dwarf. Bralin hits and does damage.

The Bandersnatch glares at Jozhur! Jozhur must make a DC 29 Fortitude save or become Confused. But that was only a swift action! For its standard action, it attacks Reggie! Reggie is hit for 15 damage! The Bandersnatch tries to grab her, and succeeds! Reggie is grappled once again!

The froghemoth stamps its feet and roars in confusion, but takes no other actions this round.

And the map.

The crowd has been alternately cheering and booing. Especially bloody and gory displays--like Jozhur's assault on the Bandersnatch in the previous round--draw cheers. The Blade Barrier drew boos and jeers. [I seriously considered having somebody in the crowd Dispel it, but I decided that wouldn't be fair.]

Tahni heals Reggie.

Zeoll attempts another Command, prompting your dim-witted DM to actually look at the critter's Int score. It's not bright enough to understand languages, so that first Command must have been some kind of anomaly. Anyway, this one doesn't work.

Rill once again hops Reggie out of a grapple, then casts a Destruction spell. The Bandersnatch takes some damage, roaring with pain, but doesn't take the full brunt of the spell.

Jozhur temporarily lost his mind. He feels much better now. [it is a one-round effect]

Terser tries to tumble past the Bandesnatch's defenses, but isn't nearly nimble enough. The creature attacks! It hits! Terser takes 15 damage and is grappled! Since he is grappled, he is unable to attack with his polearm; let me know if you have a different action to take.

Bralin thwacks the Bandersnatch twice! Each time, he dislodges a quill that embeds itself in his flesh! [Darn; I forgot to do this last round.] Bralin takes 6 damage (from 2 quills), and must succeed at 2 DC 28 Reflex saves or become Sickened.

The Bandersnatch glares at Bralin! Bralin must succeed at DC 29 Fortitude save or become Confused. Since it already has Terser in its grasp, it tries to rake him with its claws! It hits! Terser takes another 14 damage!

The Froghemoth emerges from the Blade Barrier! And presumably takes damage; let me know how much. Since it is staggered, that's all it can do.

Rill does a quick Channel to heal his friends.

The Froghemoth has done well to outlast the other beasts, but after being chewed up by two Blade Barriers, it is in no kind of shape to withstand the combined attack of the Black Lions. She also keeps her eyes on any of the other doors in this arena. For all the party know this could have just been the first wave.

In the aftermath of the battle, Terser and Reggie let their rage fade, sagging with sudden fatigue.

Zeoll, although not raging, also looks a little deflated.

Bralin matter-of-factly recovers his wand and cares for his axe.

Rill begins trying to extract Bandersnatch quills, but it's slow going. You may want to wait a bit.

Indeed, Arena workers are already coming out to haul away the bodies and rake the blood back into the sand. Jozhur and Tahni are alert for further threats, but it would seem your fight is over.

"The winners!" the Master of Ceremonies calls out, gesturing to your group. Fresh cheers greet the announcement. A worker nearby is holding a very interesting-looking chest. After a moment's hesitation, he thrusts it at Bralin. More cheers.

"Awright, don't milk it," one of the workers says. "Come on; clear out; we gotta set up the next fight."

You leave the sands of the Arena, and as Rill (presumably) continues removing quills, you open the chest. No, it is not trapped, sheesh! Inside, you find: Bag of Holding, Type IV, Figurine of Wondrous Power: Marble Elephant, Potion of Arcane Sight, +1 Icy Burst Warhammer, Staff of Abjuration, Gem of Brightness.

Zod and Tobias approach to congratulate you. "I can't thank you enough," Tobias says. "You have won my freedom, and I am forever in your debt."

"I'm going to stick with Tobias for the time being," Zod adds. "Maybe we can put a dent in the slave trade. But we'll look out for each other while we do it!"

"Mind if I keep one of those quills as a souveneir, Rill?"

Zeoll detects magic on the dead corpses, making sure there is no trace of any kind of item with which they may have been equipped.

=====

Zeoll may not have much energy left after that fight, but he is still all smiles when he hears Tobias.

"Good Tobias, no one should live a slave. Let therre be no bond of indebtedness between us except that of frriendship!" he says as he walks out of the arena. He looks for Ty Brunda, and hopes to invite him to join the party for a drink.

If there is no celebration arranged, Zeoll suggests they return to the Shattered Tankard to celebrate their own party. The old liontaur invites Zod and Tobias to make their home either on Market Island ("Once we have capturred and claimed it!") or Comeri Island.

"I would love to see you both set up schools therre, to teach newly frreed forrmerr slaves how to fight and how to live in tune with naturre." The old liontaur is quite taken with this idea, and will do all in his power to convince Zod and Tobias to found schools on a Middle Seas island -- even going so far as to offer gifts of magic items and a very generous salary.

If he has met with Ty Brunda, Captain Zeoll hopes to mention to him that the party has taken ownership of Comeri Island, as well as the mine on it. He says that he is looking for stout folk to mine the place for the party. Considering it is on the back end of nowhere, the party is offering a work-to-own deal, so that the miners will end up having a controlling interest in the place eventually. He asks Brunda for help finding willing mining folk, in exchange for favorable trade allowances at Comeri.

At the end of the evening, he invites his friends to consider the next step -- returning to Market Island and taking it by conquest, putting an end to the slave trade there.

He gos with the others to celebrate. "We can put the treasure into the Bag of Holding until we figure out how to dispense it."

Later, he will pull Jozhur aside. He is very serious when he says, "Jozhur - as we fought, you seemed to have a shadow that detached from you. Are you aware that this shadow is an undead creature? What sort of control do you exercise over this creature? Is it controlling you? I have made a commitment to my God to destroy undead wherever I find it, so this creature concerns me a great deal."

With Jozhur's permission, he will look into the soul of this creature to see what sort and alignment this creature is.

Jozhur explains to Rill that some strange things have been happening to him. "I've been able to see in complete darkness for some time. Then I noticed my shadow started moving on its own, just a little bit. I thought I was going crazy and didn't want to tell anyone. I guess I'm not crazy. It seemed to start after I was eaten by that plant, but who knows, we've had so many strange encounters."

He seems shocked when Rill tells him his shadow is undead. "What? Yes you can look at it, just don't hurt it. I felt connected to it somehow, it seemed to do what I willed it to." He pauses a moment, "So you're going to do the creepy eye thing with my shadow? Ugh, just make it quick."

Rill's probe psyche reveals: Highlight to display spoiler: {Jozhur's shadow has the same alignment as Jozhur (chaotic good). He has complete control over the shadow.}

Bralin takes the chest from the worker, and carries it out as the group departs.

As Rill removes the quills, the dwarf does his best not to wince. He does, once, and he's reasonably certain the healer gave that one an extra twist on its way out.

Examining the contents of the chest, Bralin is intrigued by the marble elephant.

Otherwise, he dutifully follows along behind Zeoll, waiting for the next crazy idea.

Rill finishes removing the quills, an involved process, but he is equal to the challenge. Tahni requests one for a souvenir, and anybody else who wants one can also have one. There are plenty.

Rill is curious about Jozhur's shadow companion, and whether it will need to be cleansed in Gargul's name, but apparently it is more a manifestation of Jozhur's abilities than an undead abomination.

Tahni is worried about leaving Tobias and Zod together, but when they explain that Tobias was Zod's mentor, and that Zod has spent the better part of a year trying to find him and free him, her worry subsides.

Bralin helps put the treasure in the Bag of Holding, but he is intrigued by the Marble Elephant.

Terser points out that it would have been more practical to put the chest in the bag than the other way around, which is true, but bags don't look terribly interesting and chests do.

Zeoll is keen to have Tobias and Zod go to either Comeri or Market Island to help with the Slave Liberation Movement you guys have going on. Tobias seems hesitant. "There's a war going on here," he says. "Or at least, under the water near here. I think I want to stick around."

Zeoll has even less luck with Brunda. "The House of Teeth are smugglers," he reminds you. "You want an illicit cargo brought into Aisildur, we're your lads. All this mining and farming and whatnot--" he waves a dismissive hand. "Maybe try in Grubbertown. Certainly nobody in any of the Houses will be interested."

You leave the Arena fully healed, with loot to examine and divvy up, and next steps to plan.

I trust you completely Jozhur, both your intent and your ability. So long as that creature remains under your control and does not harm innocents, we will not have a problem. If it should turn on you or strike out in it's own, just say the word and I will end it."

He is happy for Tobias and Zod. "Farewell Zod, and know that you may call upon us should there be a need."

Terser thinks back to a friend he had long ago that had similar control over her shadow. He wished her had gotten to know her better, but from what he experienced, the power was not as of a true undead. Regardless, his current friend is certainly worthy of trust. He'll just have to remember to exclude Jozhur's shaodw when channeling energy in the future.

Rill is reassured about Jozhur's strange shadow companion--at least for now. Terser remembers a similar companion he'd encountered before.

Tahni asks Zod about any beardless dwarves he may have seen, but neither he nor Tobias have any information to share.

Zeoll takes one last stab at recruiting miners, but finds no takers here. Dirt City, it would seem, has its own troubles to worry about.

You have a Bag of Holding full of loot, and there is a Catacombs entrance in Dirt City. The Lionfish was riding at anchor when you left her--you used a Water Walk spell to get ashore. Given the state of the docks, you doubt she's been able to find a berth.

So, what is the plan? A visit to the Catacombs? Another night in Dirt City? Make for the Lionfish? Something else?
