Finding Tobias

DM Kathy
Thursday August 31st, 2017 11:49:42 PM

The Lionfish makes its way to Dirt City, stopping every so often to let of another group of former slaves.

During the voyage, Bralin works on his carving while Zod inks new designs on his companion.

Zeoll works on his horn. He also interviews the former slaves, getting tips on where to hunt slavers.

Terser attempts to improve his combat abilities.

Rill gave a parting gift to Lion and is now sailing with the others.

After more than a week at sea, you find yourselves approaching Dirt City. Most of the freed slaves have left the Lionfish for their new lives, but there are a few who wanted to go to Dirt City itself. There is also Anrissa the elf woman, whose final destination is Karri, the Emerald City of the Culverwood. Dirt City is the closest port, so she is still with you.

[Question: do you plan to escort Anrissa to Karri, or do you plan to send her on her own?]

As you approach Dirt City, you can immediately see the effects of the Merfolk-Sahuagin War. The city's docks were obviously burned; you can see pilings where one dock used to be, but appears to have been destroyed. A second dock, while still standing, is obviously not sturdy enough to take larger ships.

As a result, there are ships riding at anchor in the small harbor, and a few more impatiently waiting their turn to dock. It's kind of a mess. And, in a city with no rules to speak of, nobody seems to be in charge of the situation; everybody is kind of doing what they want.

Tula surveys the situation with a disapproving frown. "We could anchor," she tells you. "We'd need to be awfully close to at least one other ship, but there is room for us. We could wait for a berth, but Wardd knows how long that would take. Or we could sail up or down the coast a ways, and just put in someplace and hope for the best--but that would make for a long hike to the city."

"We should accompany this fair lady to her destination. This place....this place is not safe. Shall we Water Walk to shore from here?"

"I am worried for the safety of the Lionfish here. Perhaps she can put out to see while we are ashore and we can call for her by magical means."

To the elven woman, "Where is your city? How far a trek will this be? And what do you know about this Dirt City?"

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28/30; HP55of67)  d20+2=7 ; d20+12=21 ; d20+2=5 ; d20+2=13 ; d20+26=27 ;

On the way to Dirt City, Zeoll discusses what they will do there.

The old taur ponders a while. "I trravelled the westerrn Culverrwood in the dim past of my youth. I've been to Pullman's Crrossing, I seem to rrecall, but neverr to the Emerrald City. It is severral days walk at least to the norrth of Dirrt City, I seem to rrecall -- [OOC: Know Geogrraphy 21] -- and you have to pass by the infamous Mount Bone. Herros have defeated the evil that dwells therre, but it is a foul place still by all reporrts. Rrill, can you cast Wind Walk? Perrhaps you can Wind Walk the lady to herr home, and then rreturrn the same way, with a subset of ourr memberrship. Those who stay behind can attend to business herre in Dirrt City. That is, the looking forr inforrmation parrt. It is always betterr to apprroach dangerr and rrescues togetherr."

The current captain proposes this, then:

1) Water Walk to Dirt City.
2) Wind Walk for Rill, Zod, Kunda, and Jozhur with Anrissa to go to the Emerald Kingdom to deliver Anrissa.
3) Zeoll, Tahni, Bralin, and Terser will visit Dirt City to do the following:
- 3a) Recruit a goodly number of dwarves to come to Comeri to mine the place nice and proper.
- 3b) Discreetly inquire about Tobias and Felaer Deadfall.

Zeoll's reason for this split is, don't send dwarves to the elf kingdom, and dwarves can recruit dwarves best. Also, he plans to find the Sage Guild branch library here and spend a day taking 20 to Know Local about this Felaer Deadfall. Taking 20 make that a Know Local check 32. That evening, based on his research, he can meet back up with his dwarvish friends and Gather Info check of 27.

Nobody does anything dangerous until Rill's group returns.

"Frriends? Thoughts orr imprrovements on this plan?"

Tahni is happy to be going to Dirt City. She still hopes to find some information on Bruagh. Zeoll gets her attention though. "Felar Deadfall? He's the one I was hoping to find. I heard he was here." She furrows her brow in concentration.

"If Ril has a teleport spell prepared, he and I could escort Anrissa to her destination and be back in a few moments"

Rill suggests using Water Walk to get to shore, and Zeoll expands on the plan. Nobody else seems to object to it, so the group of you--and Anrissa--end up strolling past the boats in the harbor and stepping calmly ashore. Along the way, crews of some of the boats hurl insults at you, and a few of them hurl rotten fruit as well. They are clearly frustrated with the docking situation, and seeing a bunch of fancy adventurers skate past isn't helping their mood any.

Luckily, their aim is as bad as their mood, and none of the missiles even come close.

Once ashore, Zeoll suggests that some of the group escort Anrissa to Karri via Wind Walk, so Rill soon departs with Zod, Kunda, Anrissa, and possibly Jozhur.

Zeoll then heads for the Sages' Guild, and attempts to find out about Faelar Deadfall. You learn that he sometimes provides likely slaves for the various Houses of Dirt City. There isn't really one House that he favors over the others, so all you can say for sure is that Tobias very likely can be found in one of the House towers. There are six to choose from.

Terser, Bralin, and possibly Tahni begin looking around for dwarves to supervise the mining operations on Comeri. You don't have a lot of luck. There are plenty of dwarves in Dirt City, but most are crafters--smiths and wrights and leatherworkers and so on. They don't know any more about mines than any other dwarf (which, admittedly, puts them ahead of most other people), and most of them are very busy just now with a war raging under the waves not too far away. The dwarves you find that are not busy tend to have other issues, being too old, or too young, or too drunk to really be considered.

Terser also tries to find a magical tattoo parlor, but this may not be the best place for it. There are plenty of places to get decent non-magical tattoos, and plenty of places where the proprietor is ready to claim the tattoos are totally magic, but the city does not seem to have a bona fide magical tattoo artist--or at least, not one that is available to the general public. One or more of the Houses may be harboring one, but nobody you ask seems to know for sure.

The Wind Walkers reach the fabled city of Karri after several hours.

Bralin has spent last last decade or so being generally looked up to, and often sought out. His reception by the sailors and denizens of Dirt City is unexpected and frustrating.
The dwarf's countenance very visibly moves from standard gruff to 'just don't mess with me right now' as the day progresses, and the progress doesn't.

The dwarf starts looking around for a WLA chapter. Mayhap they will have the information he seeks.

If that avenue fails, he goes looking for Zeoll.

Upon reaching Karri with Anrissa, Rill and the others take 5 rounds to materilize out of a cloud-like vapor.
He looks around. What does he see? Are people surprised to see us materialize? What sort of people are here?

He asks Anrissa about this place. What sort of town is this? What gods are venerated here? Is there a church of Gargul here? Is there are WLA Chapter House here? Where are her people located? Is there more we can do for her? At the very least, Rill insists on delivering her to her family.

He will greet them formally as Rillett Savenport, Follower and Soulseeker of our Lord Gargul, member of the Black Lions. He allows the others to introduce themselves as well, and will share with them what he knows of Anrissa's liberation, our involvement, and our commitment to ending the practice of slavery where we can.

((OOC: Hoping to have my re-class finished tonight for the DM's perusal)).

Before leaving for the Emerald Kingdom with Rill, Jozhur, and the Elf Anrissa, if Terser mentions his interest in magical tattoos, Zod will eagerly provide the Dwarven Barbarian with a shopping list of necessary reagents to create the ink.

"We can confer with Rill to provide the spell-casting. With his help, I should be able to scribe a tattoo of nearly any low-level divine spell for you on our return journey. Regarding my training with the Mailed Fist, I must admit they've shown me more how to teach, than given me the specific skills for training future soldiers. I know higher ranks include more in-depth instruction, so that others can be taught to fully utilize the Fist's unique team tactics, but I haven't progressed much past the initial training myself, advanced though it might be."

((OOC: Per Wold House Rules, the cost for crafted items comes out of the crafter's WBL. I'm not sure if we want to, or can, futz with that for our game, but whether he or Terser pays for it, Zod can craft magical tattoos at a 25% discount)).

Zod is careful to keep pace with Rill on their flight to the Emerald Kingdom. When they arrive at the Emerald City the minotaur is enthralled with the beauty of the land, particularly the tamed edges of the Culverwood. Aftering landing and shifting back to physical form, Zod flags down a gate guard. "We are members of the Black Lions, heroes from Bonetown of the Middle Seas. We are here to escort Anrissa, of the Emerald Dragons, back to your beautiful lands."

In Dirt City:

Tahni takes some sensible precautions before looking around her. She gives some thought into which of the Houses deals in information, but the question is not a difficult one. The House of Cloaks, one of the smaller Houses, consists primarily of spies and informants. They're the ones to go to for information.

Bralin is discouraged, although he has not been treated disrespectfully. Mostly, he's been hearing "sorry, I'm swamped, and anyway I don't know much about mining." He begins looking for the local WLA chapter. A city this large really ought to have one, but it's surprisingly difficult to find. At last, you are able to find it--a much smaller chapter building than you would have expected for a city this size. They greet you cordially.

In Karri:

The famed Emerald City sits atop a hill at a fork of the Pale River. Spreading views extend to the south and west; you even think you can catch glimpses of the Trade Road, off in the distance. In the manner of Elven cities everywhere, the buildings blend into their natural surroundings, and there are footpaths rather than streets.

Your appearance does cause a sensation, and prompts the appearance of a half-dozen town militia with longbows and not much sense of humor about strangers suddenly appearing in the center of town.

Zod offers an explanation, and Anrissa herself darts forward to give her own account. She is excited now--her eyes sparkle and she can hardly stand still. She seems very different from the listless, catatonic woman you rescued from Market Island.

"Andrissa!" one of the guards exclaims. Speaking Elvish, he adds Highlight to display spoiler: {"Your father has been worried sick. He'll be so happy to see you. What happened to you?"}

Rill learns that Karri has neither a WLA branch nor a temple of Gargul. Waypoint, on the Trade Road, is more closely aligned with the "human world;" you may find those things there.

Rill, having introduced himself formally, is both unsurprised and disappointed at the haughtyness of these elves. He would expect at least some sort of thanks or acknowledgement of having returned this person. He had hoped to make some cultural inroads with these folks should there be a need to call on them in the future. Unfortunate.

He appreciates Jozhur's jibe, and will later explain that he always prefers to start off formally and go down from there. But he is unaccustomed to simply being ignored. Ah well.

In Dirt City:

Terser is able to find the ingredients he is looking for in the Full Moon Market. It does take some searching, and you need to be wary of sharps and charlatans, but you can get all of the ingredients you need.

Bralin winds up speaking to a human man who introduces himself as Shep Kales. He is glad to give you a summary of the Merfolk-Sahuagin war, which seems to be going from bad to worse. It turns out that several interests in Dirt City have been trying to play one side against the other, or both sides against the middle, and the resulting mess has put everyone in danger.

He doesn't know of any miners offhand. "This is a pretty low-lying area," he explains. "Right on the coast here, with a swamp hard by. Not a good place to go digging holes in the ground. I did hear there was a group of dwarf miners a while back who tried to mine Mount Bone. That didn't go so well, but there may have been survivors. Or there may be others who know the craft. I'll put the word out and see what comes back."

Tahni expresses an interest in visiting the Cloaks.

Zeoll turns his mind to finding a place to stay this evening. It is true that the sewers of the City Below are safer than free-for-all Above, but they are also somewhat cramped, with limited space. There are inns Below, but most of them cannot accommodate Taurs in anything like reasonable comfort. However, there is a place in Wardd's Ward, in the City Above, called the Fortunate Pilgrim. It primarily serves out-of-town visitors to the Temple of Ward and the Arena, and has a good reputation.

In Karri:

Anrissa and the guardsman chatter in excited Elvish for a moment, then Anrissa turns to you. "Come," she says. "You must meet my father, and tell the tale of my rescue. For I must admit, I only remember bits and pieces of my time in captivity."

She leads you through the twisting footpaths of the city until you reach what looks like a natural rock formation. A second glance shows that it is, in fact, a cluster of Elven buildings. Anrissa begins to run, calling out in Elvish. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Father! Father, I have returned!"}

An elf man steps out of one of the buildings. He is dressed in simple artisan's clothes, and is drying his hands on a cloth. He appears startled, then overjoyed at the sight of his daughter. The two share a heartfelt embrace. "Anrissa!" he exclaims. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Where have you been? How have you returned to us? We had given up hope, daughter."}

Rill is a bit embarrassed that he may have judged these elves more harshly than he thought they had judged him. Ah well, it's certainly not the first time he's gotten something wrong.

To Anrissa's father, he introduces those here.

"Greetings good sir. I am Rillett Savenport, Follower and Soulseeker of our Lord Gargul, member of the Black Lions. This is Jozhur and Zod, also members of the Black Lions."

"The good Anrissa was found on a slaver's island, imprisoned and in a catatonic state. She accompanied us aboard out ship as we sought to liberate other slaves, many of which were small children. We believe we have put an end to that for now. Anrissa here gradually regained her mind, and was able to tell us where she was from. Because of that we were able to bring her here. I'm sorry we know little more about her capture and captivity beyond this." Rill will share the names of the slavers that we know (not sure what that was just now.)

"Can you think of any reason your daughter was abducted?"

In Dirt City:

Tahni is perhaps understandably concerned that her new companions seem pretty casual about splitting up, but Zeoll assures her that this is a rarity.

Reggie can easily find a tavern brawl or six. Indeed, with the city on edge as it is, she nearly gets in over her head. She manages to get kicked out of four taverns in a single night, which is impressive, but nowhere near the Dirt City record.

With Bralin's help, Zeoll tries to find word on Tobias or Faelar Deadfall. You find several people who know Deadfall, but all they know is that he sometimes supplies "workers" to the various Houses. He doesn't seem to be in town at the moment. You have a harder time finding anyone who knows Tobias, but at last you speak to a man who thinks that the new fight trainer the Teeth acquired recently is named Tobias. Or something like that.

Since Tobias is a former mentor of Zod, it isn't impossible that he's training fighters someplace. To learn more, you'll need to find a contact in the House of Teeth.

In Karri:

Rill steps forward and introduces himself and the rest of the party. "Taenaran Windborne," the elf man replies. "And I owe you a debt I can never repay."

The messenger also asked me to take word of his survival to his family. Thus, I found myself in the company of the Swords of Light in the Cinnamon Valley. Over time, the group separated, but I remained, serving as Sheriff. In that capacity I pursued a miscreant through an unknown portal, and found myself in the Ice Vein on the Southern Continent. I spent a year there, aiding the natives where I could. The Black Lions entered Ice Vein through a portal of there own, and I joined with them. From there we journeyed back to Bonetown. And Asildur. And now, Dirt City."

Bralin chuckles again. "The list of places I have not been may be shorter."

In Dirt City:

Reggie joins the group, looking bloody but content.

Tahni and Bralin compare notes of places visited, journeys taken--and perhaps, companions met along the way.

Meanwhile, Terser does some investigating of his own, and finds that the dwarven mining venture on Bone Mountain was years ago--and a rescue operation was sent. Zeoll talks about the plan. While in his heart he longs to free any slaves they find here, it is likely a task beyond the power of the Lionfish. We should be happy just to free Tobias. The question is, are we willing to "pay" for him, or do we prefer a jailbreak, or a head on slugathon with the House of Teeth. Zeoll is leaning toward option 2.

In Karri:

Jozhur asks Taenaran whether his actions against Parnoth were what he meant by past activities. "Yes, precisely," the elf replies. "We cannot be sure we have accounted for all the Tyrant's lackeys."

Jozhur also suggests spending the night, but Rill is anxious to get the group back together. He studies Karri landmarks to make it easier to return, then gathers the group together and returns to Dirt City.

In Dirt City:

Reggie, after catching up with her teammates, decides to visit the seediest tavern she can find. In a place like Dirt City, though, there's considerable competition for the title. Most taverns in Dirt City are at least a little seedy, and there are several that would probably be shut down in other places. Which one is "seediest" depends, frankly, on what criteria you're using. You wind up at a place in Dockside called the Wharf Rat, where everything--the walls, the floor, the bar, the patrons, and even the beer--smells like low tide. When you enter, the regulars glare at you, and the barkeep scowls at you. "Ain't seen you in here before," he says. It sounds like an accusation. "You with the Knives?"

Meanwhile, Zeoll wonders whether you can just "blip" Tobias out of the Tower of Teeth. Tahni agrees that it would be better not to give money to slavers if you can possibly help it. Terser suggests working the one House of Teeth contact you have.

Your companions arrive from Karri, and, assuming that Reggie makes it out of the Wharf Rat in one piece, the group is reunited.

Tahni is inclined to take it as a very bad sign that she can't scry, but Rill asks whether the Mage's Private Sanctum Spell can be made permanent. Tahni realizes that it is, indeed, one of the spells that can be the subject of a Permanency. [Your Knowledge check was plenty good enough to realize that.] And, as Rill suggested, the spell is likely just routine security.

Rill offers to cast a Commune spell, but Terser reminds you that you do have a contact with the House of Teeth. Unfortunately, Eloi Kole is in Bonetown. And he is an acquaintance, albeit a cordial one. Is that enough to get an introduction, or other contact information? And if it is, how are you going to reach him?

Reggie has some adventures at the Wharf Rat, which will live on in legend and song. :) What she discovers is that, in Dirt City, the seediest taverns really aren't the best place for gathering information, especially on the major Houses. Dirt City has any number of savvy information brokers, most of whom wouldn't be caught dead in a place like the Wharf Rat. People here go shopping for information much as they might shop for vegetables or sewing thread.

Zeoll reasons that diplomacy may be your best approach with one of the major Houses, especially since they seem to employ at least one high-level wizard. Bralin agrees with his assessment.

Reggie returns in time for you all to retire to your various sleeping quarters. Your night's rest is undisturbed an uneventful.

Zeoll dreams of a large tower, made entirely of teeth of various sizes and types. There are many roads leading to the tower. None of the roads is perfect--each has a few obstacles--but none of them look impassable, and they all lead to the tower of teeth.

Rill comes back from the Catacombs, cash and goods in hand, and helps his teammates sort out who owes what.

Reggie sleeps in after a rough night, and awakens with a raging hangover.

Bralin and Terser are both willing to follow Zeoll's lead. So Zeoll casts some spells and leads the way to the Tower of Teeth.

You pass through the Full Moon market, already in full swing for the day. You cut through Garrote Square, then go through the Midnight Bazaar, deserted at this hour. You skirt the large, imposing edifice that is the castle of the Prince of Thieves. As you pass the castle, you see a short, square, blocky tower ahead of you. As perhaps befits a home of smugglers, it is within a stone's throw of the sea, near the very edge of town. Unlike in Zeoll's vision, it is built of ordinary stone, not teeth. There is an entrance on the south wall--huge double doors, now shut. Guardhouses flank the doors, and from this angle it is impossible to determine whether there are guards within.

Zeoll has been giving the matter some thought, and really your best hope would have been an introduction from somebody known to the Teeth. You couldn't really arrange for that, so the next best option is just to be polite and hope for the best.

Approaching the tower, Tahni expresses a hope that it's the Dentist Guild, and Rill suggests claiming to be emissaries from the Tooth Fairy.

Of course, as you have all learned by now, the names of the Houses of Dirt City are not to be taken literally. The Teeth have nothing to do with dentistry. Similarly, the Wolves are all people, the Cloaks wear all manner of clothing, the Keys actually prefer lockpicks, the Darts don't limit themselves to ranged weapons, and most of the Knives actually carry cudgels.

Reggie and Jozhur size up the building. It looks as if it would be quite easy to climb. The unknown quantity, of course, is what will happen if you start trying to climb it.

You step up to the door, and find that there are indeed guards in the guard-houses. They step out as you approach, halberds at the ready. "Oi!" says one. "Whatchyou want?"

Zeoll answers with his customary suavity. The guards exchange glances. "Wait here," one says. He turns to enter the tower, then turns to glare at you. "And don't try nothin' funny!" he adds.

He is inside the tower for about 15 minutes. When he emerges, he is holding a scrap of paper, which he thrusts at Zeoll. "Now clear off!" he says.

On the paper is written: The Shattered Tankard. One hour.

The first problem to be solved, obviously, is figuring out what the Shattered Tankard is, and where it is. As Bralin suggests, the Tankard part is a pretty big clue.

With Terser and Rill to make the various Dirt City toughs behave themselves, Zeoll is able to ask around and find the place. It does take you a while, but eventually you find the tavern. It is in the City Above, alarmingly close to the free-for-all marketplace called the Scrum.

As you make your way through the City Above, Tahni notices that your group is coming in for some scrutiny from a group of tough-looking men wearing tabards with knives on them.

As some of you know, the Knives keep order in Dirt City. They are not guards, and certainly not police--it is more accurate to call them "enforcers," in the organized-crime sense of the word. The fact that they are keeping an eye on such a highly-visible group is not entirely surprising, but may spell trouble to come.

Your hour is nearly used up by the time you enter the Shattered Tankard. It's a reasonably respectable place by Dirt City standards--well-lit, mostly clean, and devoid of suspicious smells. Two halflings--a man and a woman--are serving the tables, while a human man tends the bar. You look around for your contact, but of course you have no idea who they are, what they look like, or even how many to expect.

You are able to find a table, kind of wedged against a supporting pillar, and sit. You haven't been there long before a human man, looking to be about 70, comes and sits at your table. He is a thin man, with white hair and blue eyes. "Ty Brunda," he says, settling into his chair. "I understand you wanted to speak with me."

Tahni is studying your contact. You note that he wears a rapier at his side. He rests his hands on the table, and you can see old calluses on them, and a couple of scars. He does not seem to be attempting to hide himself, your group, or the meeting.

Tahni sticks to what the barkeep calls "lemonade." It's certainly sour, but whether there are any actual lemons in it is an open question. She keeps an eye on the door, but Brunda and Tobias are not followed and nobody appears to be showing any special interest.

Zeoll moves close to Tobias, putting him inside the protection circle. You do not notice any difference in his behavior or attitude.

Rill asks for privacy. Brunda is reluctant at first, but eventually moves over to the bar so that Rill can ask his questions.

"Against my will?" he scratches his head. "Well, I suppose, yes. I mean, they bought me, then brought me here, and I didn't really have a say in the matter." Asked about coercion, he says, "it's complicated. They don't lock me in or anything, but there's a lot of people in the Tower and they all know I'm not supposed to leave without permission. And even assuming I did get out--where would I go? I've no coin, and Dirt City isn't a good place for an honest man to start afresh. So I stay where I am because honestly I'm better off." Asked if he would like to leave, he says, "Well, I dunno. I guess, if it could be arranged."

Both Rill and Zeoll can tell that Tobias is being truthful. Using Probe Psyche, Rill can tell that the man really is Tobias, that he is Lawful Neutral in alignment, and that he's actually kind of enjoying his work for the Teeth--although he doesn't enjoy being owned, and he's not a fan of Dirt City.

[Sense Motive - 26 (nat 20)]

In response to Rill's question about weapons, Bralin casually reaches into his haversack, withdraws a warhammer, and places it on the table.
"I will want that back," he tells Tobias.

The dwarf evaluates the back and forth between Brunda and Rill, and nods in understanding.

"This is not about money," he declares to Brunda, revealing his discovery.
He sets down his mug and regards the man carefully. "You want us to do something for you."

Jozhur sits and listens for a few moments, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Once things start to get more tense, he wanders away and disappears into the shadows nearby, somewhere behind Brunda(Stealth: 40).

From the shadows, Jozhur leans on his longbow and waits for the conversation to go south.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)

Zeoll quietly says to his friends that this is a grey area. The fellow is happy in his job. Honestly, he is Zod's mentor. He is happy to let Zod make the decision. The old liontaur looks at Zod to see what he says.

[OOC: I fully expect Zod to be silent, and that's OK. Look, this is not even our side quest. If the player it was designed for can't be here for it, and if Tobias is happy being a slave, then let it go. We got bigger fish to fry back home. Dirt City is too far from Bonetown anyway. Let's go.]

Reggie and Jozhur watch the conversation unfold--and watch for signs that the conversation is about to deteriorate.

Tahni offers to charm Brunda, and Zeoll is content to leave things up to his teammates. Bralin, at Rill's request, produces a weapon for Tobias.

Rill has a proposal for Brunda, who listens courteously. "Amicably," he echoes. "Yes. Yes, I think we can settle this amicably with no need for money to change hands." He clears his throat. "For reasons that I'm sure would not interest you, my House has become somewhat unpopular with the rank-and-file citizens of Dirt City. We've been devising a method for getting back in their good graces, and the good Tobias has been helping us with it."

"I have?" Tobias sounds surprised.

"You have, I assure you," Brunda says. He continues, "what we had planned was a spectacle in the Arena. We have managed to acquire some extraordinary beasts, and we had been hoping to pit our House's best fighters against them, for the entertainment of the masses. Once Tobias had them trained up a bit, of course.

"But now, I see we have a group of formidable adventurers in our midst. If your liontaur friend is to be believed, this fight should be naught but gentle exercise to you. So, that is my proposition. Fight this fight in the Arena, and in return, Master Tobias may stay on salary or leave, as he likes. In addition, you may keep whatever moneys or treasures result from your fight. What say you?"

"To be clear, regardless of the outcome of the fight Tobias would be free?" Tahni wants to make sure all the terms are clear. Dealing with thieves is never a pleasant task and she's pretty sure the party are going to end up with the bad end of this deal however it plays out.

"And what sort of extraordinary beasts?"

"And how does a group of outsiders killing some captive creatures make the city like you? I'm confused about your plan. Unless we're supposed to dress up in some bone armor to show who we fight for."

Terser isn't so sure that they want to be representing these people to city that doesn't like them. Oh well. Zeoll is right, this place is far away, and if things go poorly, they can avoid it in the future.

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23

Rill cares little for the House of Teeth and their problems, but this is a solution that will likely save the unnecessary deaths of a bunch of guards.

"OK. Fight to earn this man's freedom? I can see that. I presume we fight as a team? So what happens if we defeat but do not kill our opponents?"

"Bear in mind that if you pit us against creatures we have a moral opposition to fighting, such as a good creature or an intelligent neutral creature, we will likely let it go and come and extract both Tobias and our payment from the House of Teeth."

"Also, if you guys have a cleric in there, do you consider him to be your wisdom tooth?"

Reggie perks up at the arena option. she approaches the table, "About damn time, Been looking for that sort of thing. of course fightin' monsters wasn't the original idea I had in mind, but still, an arena fight is an arena fight."

Adding to the others, "as far as moral obligations, well, the bar aint very high fer me."

Zeoll is glad to accept if his friends do. The old liontaur kind of relishes the idea.

Terser was worried for a minute when Rill got all serious. But leave it to him to find the humour in any situation. Even if the jokes are as bad as the ones made by his father.

Tahni asks for assurances, which Brunda is happy to give. "The minute you set foot on the sands of the Arena," he says, "Tobias is free, regardless of the outcome."

Terser asks how this will improve the popularity of the House of Teeth. "It's entertainment," Brunda shrugs. "Something to take their minds off their troubles. And we'll make sure they know who provided it."

Rill[ asks what happens if you defeat your opponents without killing them. Brunda smiles. "Then, when they're healed, we can pit them against a different set of fighters. Which would be good for us. So by all means, defeat them without killing them if you can."

Brunda does not answer questions about the kinds of beasts you'll be facing, merely saying with a smile, "but that would spoil the surprise."

Reggie is eager to accept and even old Zeoll seems to relish the idea of being a gladiator. Brunda glances around the table. "It would seem we're in agreement," he says. "I shall begin making the arrangements, and send a messenger to you with the particulars. In the meantime, of course, Tobias will return to the Tower of Teeth."

Zod, who has been oddly quiet, speaks up at this point. He wants to accompany Tobias back to the House of Teeth to prevent any chicanery, and he volunteers to stay with Tobias while the rest of you fight in the Arena, to ensure that the Teeth keep their word. [OOC: Damarr has stepped away from the Wold, and I thought it would be nice to have his character exit by going with his former mentor.]

Brunda, Tobias, and Zod return to the Tower of Teeth, leaving you to make whatever arrangements you choose in preparation of the coming fight.

Tahni looks Zeoll. She knows he shares her feelings when it comes to slave traders.

She then turns to the rest of the party "How do we feel about going into an arena as the House of Teeth champions? Will others believe us to be associated with them? I just don't want anyone here to be viewed as in league with a slaver"

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)
Monday September 25th, 2017 11:56:30 AM

Before Bruda leaves, Zeoll tries to get some more details. How many days are there before the fight? Is spell casting before the match allowed? Any rules or limitations? Is this a melee or one-on-one? If matches are not to the death (as he has agreed, we can win by knocking foes unconscious), what are the rules for victory or concession? If I teleport an enemy to another plane, is that a win, for example? Or if I get an enemy to agree to surrender?

If there are more than a couple days to the matches, do we want to scoot north? Did Rill say the group has a little unfinished business up there in the Culverwood?

"We can dedicate our fight and our victory to the freedom of a friend, and declare out support to all those in need of freedom. If we show that we're willing to fight to end slavery, it will either inspire others to do the same, or provoke slavers into attacking us. Either way, it will result in a large decrease in the number of living slave traders everywhere."

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23

"I must state that this gladiatorial thing is not to my liking. It is written Gargul's holy texts, 'Do not fear death. Fear instead a wasted life.' and, 'So it was that he turned away from his path of wanton destruction, of killing for killing’s sake, choosing instead to only inflict death where it was warranted and had purpose.'"

"Killing beasts for the sake of entertainment is repugnant, but I concede it is better than paying for a slave or killing innocent guards. As far as knocking foes unconscious, let us not do things in half-measures. Dooming a creature to future combat is worse I think than a clean death. If a foe falls we should make sure it is dead, and deny these House of Teeth guys the ability to recycle their combatants over and over."

"I'm headed to the catacombs to deal with a few items. Anyone else need to visit? I'd be glad for the company in this city of thieves. Bonetown may be full of pirates, but they're my pirates."

Reggie was about to respond to Tahni, but thus far She has yet to even acknowledge Reggie, so why would now be any different.

"I for one don't really care who I am associated with." she mumbles more to herself than an answer.

She really has no response to Rill's religious sermon, but in response to the trip to the catacombs, "Not me, I haven't found much there I could really use, at least not recently."

He tags along to the Catacombs, browsing the store catalog along the way.

You ask Brunda how many days you have before the fight, but he truly does not know. It will take some time to transport the beasts and spread the word of the coming fight, so you've probably got a day or two at least.

He is able to tell you that there are no limits on spells, other than spells that harm spectators. Teleporting an enemy to another plane will not count as a victory because, as he says, "how do we know it'll stay put?" Enemies who surrender or are knocked unconscious will count as defeated.

The fight is meant to be the team of beasts against the team of you guys, but Brunda freely admits that some of the creatures might not be bright enough to understand that and my turn on one another. "But surely that's to your advantage," he adds.

They depart, and you begin to mull the ethics of aiding "slavers" or killing for sport. But you find, as others have before you, that Dirt City is a place that forces hard choices on good people. Some of you head to the Catacombs to gear up.

[OOC: You do have time for a jaunt to Karri if you want to do that now.]

RobC - Tahni Wyrmrider -- AC 20/13/17 -- CMD 19 -- HP 125/125
Tuesday September 26th, 2017 6:49:16 AM

Tahni has all she needs in preparation for the upcoming, and seemingly inevitable, battle.

She is quite impressed with both Rill's knowledge of scripture and his interpretation of it. Despite his views on death, she intends to spare the life of any creatures that might show redemption. A devil? Kill it. A kitten? Spare it. Hopefully there won't be too much of a grey area in between. The monsters are being forced to fight after all. She would rather they live another day even with the very remote possibility of escape.

Tahni feels a shiver run down her spine. She knows all too well what it is like to be a captive, clinging to that last bit of hope to one day be free.

Rill (MarkB) HP 111/111 - AC 25/15/23 CMD 23
Tuesday September 26th, 2017 11:45:54 AM

Rill will offer to take everyone to Karri to meet with the father of the elven woman we saved.

"My teleport spells are limited. I can get us all there one day, and return us here the next - or perhaps a following day. But I do not want to return the day of our fight. It wouldn't do to have used all my highest level spells before the match."

We'll contact Ty Brunda on the timing. Assuming we'll have the time to go there one day, return a day or two later, and rest one night before the area, we'll go!

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28; HP71)
Tuesday September 26th, 2017 2:09:19 PM

Zeoll agrees with Rill that visiting the Elvish city is a good idea.

"It is a place I would like to see beforre I die, and this may be my best chance," the old liontaur says.

Can we wind walk there and teleport back the same day? Or go one day and return the next morning?

Terser snaps his fingers in consternation. He was gonna suggest to Rill that he use his fancy spell to take whatever creature it is to their home area rather than have to kill or subdue it. It seems that that's out now. He wonders about other means of removing their foes, but not knowing any other tricks, is resigned to using his blade.

Jozhur shrugs at Tahni, "They're beasts, maybe even monsters. They're being held for the sole purpose to fight in this arena. Rill is right, if we subdue the creatures they will just be used for more fighting. May as well end it for them. Maybe the meat can even be harvested to feed the city."

He ponders a moment, "It's a show they want. We could kill the things in the least spectacular way possible, but I'm not sure how to do that since sending them to another plane is not possible. Our survival and Tobias' freedom is most important."

He also agrees with Rill on seeing the elvencity. "They wanted to honor us for what we did. We need to show up. It'd be nice to cut loose for a bit before we step in that arena."

Once outside, she paces about some out front swigging the rum every so often. like she is contemplating what to do. mumbling something about magic, and wizards, and similar such things.
