Mine

DM Kathy
Wednesday July 19th, 2017 11:49:32 PM

Jozhur, Bralin, and Reggie try to find out about mining in the region, and Comeri in particular. Most people have not heard of Comeri, but Jozhur does find one scholarly type who says that it's a small island that has a tin mine and not much else. Bralin and Reggie learn that most mining in the region is open-pit mining.

Rill looks for a WLA chapter, and is able to find a small one. They don't have much in the way of resources, but they are happy to record your information. They have not heard of Comeri. Unfortunately, there is no Catacombs entrance here.

Both Zeoll and Tishe' spend some time talking to the girl called Girl. She explains that "girl" is what her masters always called her. She thinks maybe she had another name once, when she was with her mama, but she doesn't remember it very well. Zeoll notices little change when the spell wears off. Girl is very cautious around everyone at first, but as time passes and nobody hits her, she opens up some and shows herself to be kind, rather sweet, and reasonably smart.

It doesn't take long to re-provision, and soon you are sailing to Comeri. You are at sea for several days; it took a while to reach Aisildur and now you're going back near where you started. During the trip, Zeoll tries to see in his dreams what you might be up against. You get a general impression of armor and halberds and somebody casting spells.

As you get close to Comeri, Zod casts his spell. You find that there are no other islands within 10 miles. You confirm the presence of tin. And you can tell there are about 100 people on the island, give or take a few.

Jozhur informs Zod of the tin mine. "One hundred people, huh? Wonder what the ratio of slaves to guards is?"

He gives his equipment a once over, making sure everything is in place before they head into what is almost certainly a battle. When they draw near, he scurries up into the mast for their approach, keeping an eye out for danger. (Perception: 21)

Rill will give a ring with Continual Flame cast on it to "Girl", adding a leather cord so she can wear it if needed. "Young lady, you have been most helpful with these little ones. Please accept this gift. It is a magical light that will not fail you, just as you have been so steadfast and unfailing in caring for these children."

He will also use Probe Psyche on her to see if he can determine anything about her past - a name, perhaps a family connection?

Rill will cast two Divination spells, asking:
(1) What is the best way for us to effect a rescue of Madra's children?
(2) What sort of creatures will try to stop us from rescuing Madra's children on Comeri?
(Both divination rolls indicated success!)

"You know, if we liberate these slaves, this may open up actual mining jobs here. After all, a mine is a terrible thing to waste."

-----------------------------
Probe Psyche - After one minute of observation and/or conversation, a seeker can use this ability, with a Sense Motive check at DC 30, to know the creature's alignment and fully understand the creature's personality. This also gives the seeker insight into that particular creature, gaining a +2 Insight bonus to attacks, armor class, and spell DC against the creature.

Divination - Similar to augury but more powerful, a divination spell can provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within 1 week. The advice granted by the spell can be as simple as a short phrase, or it might take the form of a cryptic rhyme or omen. If your party doesn't act on the information, the conditions may change so that the information is no longer useful. The base chance for a correct divination is 70% + 1% per caster level, to a maximum of 90%. If the die roll fails, you know the spell failed, unless specific magic yielding false information is at work.

Bralin lets Rill know he's interested in two of the Tangleburn bags, otherwise he's good with selling the lot. He also winces involuntarily at the man's comment about mines, although he isn't sure why.

The dwarf gets a minor education on mines, and a major one in the taverns of Fargunia. All and all, a good day's work.

Which are followed by several days on the water, accompanied by a dozen of his favorite toddlers. Bralin takes to sitting next to the portside railing, scraping flecks off a piece of soapstone while muttering "oohhmm" at any youngster who ventures near.

Thursday July 20th, 2017 7:57:46 PM

Zeoll likes how Rill's thinking goes. He loves the idea of populating these minor islands with freed slaves. Maybe there is danger, but where is there not in this crazy Wold? And he hopes to enlist the pirates of Bonetown to become a navy to watch over these folks.

When it is time to head toward the island, Zeoll sounds his horn while still a ways off. He makes sure everyone is buffed up with a Mage Armor who might need one. Then he is ready to head for the island.

Zod nods at the possibility of repurposing the island. "I'm not sure we can move so many slaves, in any case. The question of how to liberate these people will probably end up a bit more involved than 'overthrow the masters and break the chains.'"

The minotaur looks around the already cramped warship-turned-ferry, smiling as the heroes and crew warm to the passengers. Or maybe it's the other way. In any case, seeing the children play with Kunda curled on the rail nearby, basking in the sun, gives Zod a sense of warmth, confident they will do more good things.

During the time at sea all Reggie can do is work to re-educate Ky. teaching him his name, explaining where he comes from. and a small amount about how they became separated. She tries her best to keep it simple. and just gives him small bits of info at a time, letting his own curiosity drive any questions.

Reggie simply makes herself ready for battle. as the ship gets closer, she takes a moment for some personal time with Ky. "Ok Ky, mommie has to go talk to some very bad people. you need to stay here. I'll be back before you know it."

DM Kathy
Friday July 21st, 2017 12:51:22 AM

Jozhur checks the equipment, and everything seems in good working order, if you ignore a little toddler drool. You climb up to the crow's nest, but see nothing threatening as you approach Comeri.

Bralin spends some time carving, and many of the toddlers seem to like hanging out where he is. Zod finds that Kunda is a weirdly effective babysitter.

Reggie spends some time with Ky. He knows his name, and you are able to explain some of the history he doesn't remember. He seems to be understanding it, judging from the way he asks questions. "You's Ky's mommie?" he'll ask, then "Ky's mommie go away?" At first, you assure him that you won't go away, and then you realize that he doesn't yet have a grasp of past tense, and he's asking if you went away. After a few iterations, he seems to understand the gist of the story.

Rill gives his Continual Flame ring to Girl. Or tries to. She keeps giving it back, once going so far as to sneak up and return it in the middle of the night. You keep explaining that you want her to have it, and she finally says, "I didn't steal it." It isn't a question, precisely, but she does seem to want you to confirm that you are really giving it to her, and you aren't going to turn around and claim she stole it.

Your Probe Psyche turns up vague memories of a mother who seemed to be ill, and a painful separation of mother and child. You don't get anything really usable.

You also cast Divination.

What sort of creatures will try to stop us from rescuing Madra's children on Comeri? Humans and a dwarf.

What is the best way for us to effect a rescue of Madra's children?

Well, okay, here's the thing. Sometimes (actually, a lot of times), I like to just set up a situation and see what the PCs do with it. That's the case here. I know who's on the island, and generally how they'll respond to situations. I did not set up a One True Way to succeed at this quest. I have no idea what you guys are going to do; I just hope it's awesome. So I, role-playing your god, can't answer the question, because there isn't a single right answer. So, I'm guessing the answer you get is something along the lines of: that's up to you.

As you approach the island, Zeoll blows his horn, while Terser begins to discuss strategy and Reggie takes leave of her son.

Tishe' has been on two adventures with the Black Lions, and is still getting back into the swing of things with working with a new group. Also polishing the rust off her own game, remembering what she can and can't do; where she can support or help and where she just doesn't have the skills or knowledge.

Both magically and skills-wise, Tishe' admits to herself in tactics, she is a bright thread; good for the immediate need and quite dramatic, but if very limited usefulness on the strategic pattern as a whole. Another life far away, she was better at seeing the whole cloth...

Her memories and thoughts keep the Spellweaver occupied.

You make some preparations and sail right up to the dock. As you approach, three figures walk out onto the dock to meet you. The one leading the way is a dwarf in plate mail. He's an older dwarf, and possibly a bit stouter than he was in his prime, but he looks like he still knows how to use the dwarven waraxe in his belt. Accompanying him are two humans wearing plate mail and carrying halberds.

Although they are well-armed and well-armored, their posture is casual, but alert. This is "take a couple of guys and go check out the strange ship that's just shown up," not any kind of attack in force.

When you are within hailing distance, the dwarf calls, "Ahoy, the Lionfish!"

[And, before anybody freaks out, the name of the ship is painted right there one the prow, so all you know for sure is that the dwarf can read.]

Zeoll answers the dwarf's hail by introducing himself. "Elzor Hammerborn," the dwarf replies.

Zeoll then launches into his explanation. Elzor makes no verbal reply, but steps a little closer to sniff the liontaur's breath.

Rill also introduces himself, and asks who is in charge of the mine. "I run the mine," Elzor Hammerborn replies. "All our laborers were purchased fair and square. You got no right to come here and take 'em. You claim to represent the gods--well, if the gods don't like it, let 'em come down here and sort it out themselves."

Bralin also introduces himself. Terser does not introduce himself, but issues some subtle threats. Perhaps too subtle; Elzor does not seem intimidated in the slightest.

Aboard the Lionfish, Reggie seeks to blend in and look inconspicuous. So she's the one who has the best view when Tishe' suddenly looks straight up into the blue sky. "Look," Elzor says. "I run the mine. I don't own it. I don't own the slaves, neither; they belong to the group that owns the island. I couldn't set 'em free if I wanted to. Which I don't. I don't know what bee's got in your bonnet, but I'm going to tell you one last time: clear off, or you'll regret it."

Jozhur, moving stealthily, manages to slip around the guards. Reggie, after making sure the noncombatants are securely belowdecks, slips into the water to make her own stealthy approach.

Terser and Bralin essentially wait, possibly sensing a battle is not far off.

Zod cautions his companions that there may be casters on the way.

Zeoll gives two blasts on his Horn of Fog, and Rill offers one more chance to resolve this peacefully.

The dwarf does not accept, and seems to think the fog is reason enough to go on the offensive. "Right," he says. "At them, lads!" He sidesteps the fog to attack Zeoll! The dwarven axe connects for 12 damage!

The guards move up, one of them drawing a possible AoO from Jozhur, if Jozhur is holding a melee weapon. The other attacks Zod with his halberd! He does not connect!

And the map. The ship hasn't left the dock yet, because I kind of pictured you guys still disembarking. The small gray square is the gangplank. The cloud thing is the fog. Hopefully the rest of it makes sense; if not, ask me in email.

Reggie swims to shore. [Please move your character.]

Bralin casts a spell on himself, then tries out one of the new toys. The guard is stuck to the dock, and catches on fire!

Terser steps up to attack one of the guards, perhaps forgetting that the man is wielding a polearm! The attack of opportunity hits, and Terser takes 18 damage! Of course, he gives as good as he gets!

Rill steps back and begins casting, while Zeoll turns invisible and slips away. Both keep an eye out for reinforcements.

No Perception checks needed, really; they're not trying to be subtle. Two more guards, accompanied by a man in a chain shirt, arrive at the dock.

Chain-shirt guy casts a spell! Spellcraft DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {Unholy Blight} A cold, cloying miasma of darkness bursts near the gangplank, and then disappears. Terser, Zod, Rill and Bralin each take 30 damage and are sickened for 3 rounds. A DC 19 Will save reduces it to 15 damage, and negates the sickened condition.

Meanwhile, the new guards attack Zeoll. One hits, for 15 damage.

The red guard attacks Zod twice, connecting once for 16 damage. The blue guard takes some fire damage, then attempts to trip Terser. He can do this without provoking, and he succeeds! Terser is tripped! His being tripped provokes an Attack of Opportunity, because this guy is really into tripping people! Terser is hit for 22 damage! The dwarf Elzor steps forward [5-foot step] and also attacks Terser! Terser takes another 13 damage!

Zeoll launches a Peaceball that hits himself, the two guards that just walked by, and the one hanging back (20 ft radius). That's a save DC base 10 +2lvl +5wis +3feats +2cradled +2bloodline = Will DC24 or unable to take offensive actions.

That's a standard action that ruins Zeoll's invisibility after casting.

Zeoll calls out to his friends, speaking obliquely but loudly, to let them know which are affected -- and NOT to attack those who are calmed.

Bluff check 26 to pass a secret message to his friends: Do not attack this one or that one or that one -- per the kindly DM's notice of which ones are affected by the spell.

Then Zeoll takes a five ft step towards shore (moved on map).

Well, I certainly made a hash of that! I'm going to do a partial reset, and we'll move forward from there.

Terser was not knocked prone, so he wasn't hit with the follow-up attack. The dwarf did still attack him, though, so he did still take the 13 damage from that. He also took the 18 damage from the AoO, and the damage from the spell, and still needs to roll a Will save.

And we haven't heard from Zod, but he'll have another day to respond.

Jozhur springs out of the mist to attack the dwarf. [You can revise your actions, but I am going to use your rolls from yesterday.] Even with the flank, he is not able to hit, so he retreats back to the fog cloud.

Zeoll casts a Hold Person on the spellcaster, He succeeds, and the caster is held fast.

Rill's lion appears and swats at the caster. It misses; the man is well-armored. Rill follows up with a Flame Strike, and does damage!

Bralin attacks the dwarf, and hits!

Reggie grabs hold of the spellcaster, who is now held by Zeoll's Hold Person spell, and by Reggie!

Zod attacks the guard in front of him with a flurry of blows. Only one blow hits, but it is enough to finish off the guard!

Terser attacks the dwarf, hitting once! The dwarf is looking hurt!

The dwarf uses a withdrawal action to retreat. This means he only provokes from Jozhur, whom he can't really see.

The blue guard is stuck to the deck and on fire, so he contents himself with trying to put himself out. He does not succeed.

The two other guards move up the dock. If Jozhur has combat reflexes, he gets an AoO on each of them. It isn't clear to me whether Terser has reach; if he does, he can use his Unexpected Strike on the purple guard. The purple guard then tries to trip Terser, but does not succeed.

Jozhur's first AoO misses, and unfortunately gives away his position. The next two hit, but he is not able to sneak attack. He nimbly darts past the opponents and slashes at one of the guards, doing a lot of damage.

Terser, after laying down the smack on the purple guard, gives him a little tough talk. The guard will be shaken for 4 rounds.

Zeoll yells for the blue guard to Drop. The guard, however, is too busy being on fire to pay Zeoll much mind. [Natural 20 on the save!]

Bralin attacks the purple guard, but misses twice.

Reggie pins her opponent, and squeezes out a "Ghk!" from him.

Rill wants to target Elzor with a spell, but can't see the dwarf through the Fog Cloud. His lion smacks the cleric around.

Elzor attempts to retreat some more, and now Rill can see him. He kills the dwarf, then calls for his surrender. He gets no reply.

The blue guard takes some more damage from the flames, then attacks Bralin. He misses.

The purple guard tries to trip Jozhur, but fails.

The green guard takes a 5-foot step and also tries to trip Jozhur. He succeeds! Jozhur is prone! The guard gets a follow-up attack, which hits! Jozhur takes 15 damage.

The cleric is able to cast a verbal-only spell, and tells Reggie to Flee!. Reggie must succeed at a DC 20 Will save or spend one round moving away from the cleric.

At the end of the round, three more arrive on the scene! These are not guards; they are kind of thuggish-looking guys wearing banded mail and carrying whips.

Rill see the new arrivals. Great - more senseless killing. Gargul's teachings are that death comes in its time, but an unnecessary death is a sin.

He moves fore of the Lionfish and reaches for divine power to conjure a Blade Barrier. A curtain of whirling blades of pure force springs up around the thugs with whips. He hopes that using a whip through whirling blades will effectively disarm these guys. (Did my best to place this on the map to contain the thugs, but not affect other combatants. It doesn't follow strict Pathfinder area of effect rules. Feel free to change as needed.)

He yells across the docks, "ENOUGH! THE BLACK LIONS ARE HERE TO FREE THE SLAVES ON THIS ISLAND, INCLUDING ANY OF YOU HERE IF YOU BE SLAVES. JOIN US OR STAND DOWN. ANYTHING ELSE, AND YOU WILL MEET THE SAME FATE AS ELZOR THERE." He points at the still dwarf's body.

Rill places a Blade Barrier around the new arrivals. Rill's lion beats up on the cleric. Rill calls for the opponents to surrender.

Bralin's attacks are a lot more convincing this time around, and his opponent appears seriously injured. Terser finishes him off.

Zeoll tries another Command, and this time the blue guard drops his halberd.

Jozhur stands up, provoking an AoO from the green guard, who hits! Jozhur takes 22 damage. Josher's own attack hits the blue guard. The guards do not seem to be evil.

Reggie squeezes the cleric harder, but she notices that he's limp and lifeless in her grasp.

The blue guard takes some more fire damage, and tries to put out the flames. He is not successful. The green guard hesitates. He doesn't drop his halberd, but he doesn't attack anybody with it, either.

Inside the blade barrier, the three thugs are urging each other to go through and not be babies. No, you go through. No, you. Shut up! You shut up!

They haven't surrendered, either, but they seem to be contained.

Zeoll assures Rill that the Blade Barrier can be taken down, which Rill spoils by pointing out that the three men haven't actually surrendered yet. But, after more urging from Rill, the three men do surrender, and throw their other weapons over the barrier.

In the meantime, Rill casts a Detect Magic, and with Jozhur's help, is able to assemble a pile of loot. You find:

+2 chain shirt, +2 heavy wooden shield, +1 human bane morningstar, cold iron dagger, cloak of resistance +1 (6), elemental gem (earth), headband of inspired wisdom +2, ring of counterspells (dispel magic), ring of protection +2, robe of bones, silver holy symbol of Ga’al, +1 dwarven waraxe, masterwork full plate, +1 heavy steel shield, belt of giant strength +2 (5), +1 full plate (4), +1 halberd (4), composite longbow (+4 Str) (4).

[That is just the gear from the dwarf, the cleric, and the four guards. You have not yet collected everything from the three overseers.]

Once the bodies have been relieved of their valuables, Reggie rolls them into the sea.

Bralin asks for descriptions of the remaining overseer, the boss, and Hammerborn. The guard looks a little puzzled. "Well, that's the boss your lady friend is rolling off the dock," he says, nodding toward the cleric. "And I guess Hammerborn's next," he adds. [OOC: The dwarf did introduce himself as Elzor Hammerborn.] "The other overseer's a human guy, middling height, brown hair and a beard."

Terser also requests a description of Mistress Hych. "Human woman," the guard says. "About thirty-five, maybe? Looks like all the color's been washed clean out of her."

Rill takes down the Blade Barrier and relieves the three overseers of their gear. Each of them had:

+1 banded mail, +1 heavy flail, belt of giant strength +2, masterwork whip

(So you get three of each of those items.)

Rill also speculates that Mistress Hych is undead. Terser speculates that she may be the spellcaster you were warned about.

Bralin and Reggie claim some of the loot, and Zeoll has the rest of it carried on board the Lionfish.

Jozhur ties up the overseers. You can tie them to the pier itself, or you can tie them to the other boat that is also tied up here. Or you can tie them to the Lionfish; it is up to you.

Zeoll orders the guard prisoners to lead you to the other overseer and Mistress Hych. One of the guards is still pretty wounded, but his companions help him to his feet, and they lead the way off the pier.

You scramble up a short trail and reach what almost looks like a little village. There are several buildings, with footpaths leading among them. After some hesitation, your guard-guides lead you through the buildings and along a path that leads to the south. After a couple of minutes, you come to an area with plowed fields, an herb garden, a chicken coop, and a pen with some cows. The only thing missing here is a farmhouse.

Several people, adults and children, are at work here. They are undoubtedly slaves--you're pretty sure all the labor here is slave labor--but they don't seem to be too hard-worked or badly used. If you didn't know better, you'd think they were just regular farm-folk--pulling weeds, hoeing the rows, feeding the chickens.

A human woman, seated near the well, rises to her feet. She is in her thirties, with dishwater hair, light eyes, and fair skin. Her lashes and brows are light enough to blend in with the rest of her face. She does look somewhat as if all the color had been washed out of her. She is also very much alive. She looks frightened.

"What--what is this?" she asks, her voice trembling. "What's going on?"

He asks her where the mines are. "Well, there's just the one mine," she says. "It's on the other side of the main camp. There's a path leading north, near the infirmary."

Zeoll casts Detect Magic, but the only magic auras present belong to his companions. He also has some questions for Mistress Hych. "You don't know where you are?" she replies, clearly puzzled. "This is Comeri island. I--I run the farm. Master Orland runs--ran the whole island, you see, and Master Hammerborn ran the mine. And I run the farm. Except now I'm the only one left?"

"And I meant to ask 'which children?' because yes, we do have children slaves here. Is it these?" She gestures behind her. Pretty much everybody has stopped working at this point to stare at you. "Olive, Benjee, Cam, Tuva? Could you come over here please?" The four children obediently troop over to Mistress Hych. For what it's worth, they don't seem the least bit afraid of her. "Are these the children you're looking for?" she asks. [OOC: They are not.]

Jozhur looks and listens carefully, but finds nothing that seems off or out of place--except that this whole setup seems inconsistent with whip-wielding overseers. Then again, there aren't any of those here, either.

Terser points out that you could rescue all the children here, not just Madra's.

Reggie suggests that the rest of the group could explore for a bit.

Zod ponders the fate of those who tried to thwart the Black Lions in their quest.

Zeoll has more questions.

"My role," Mistress Hych seems puzzled by the question. "Like I said, I run the farm. That is, I decide what we plant, and when, and make sure the crops are tended and the animals are cared for, and--and all that. Um...the island is owned by a group of people from Aisildur. I guess they're real rich and everything, but I've never met any of them. Master Orland runs--ran the operation for them, you see. I don't think they've ever been here. Master Orland goes--went to visit them once or twice a year."

Terser approaches a woman carrying a basket full of pulled-up weeds. "I'm not sure exactly how many workers," she says. "Eighty-four? Eighty-six? Something like that. Most of 'em are up at the mine, of course. There are four overseers and six guards." [OOC: That's consistent with what your prisoners have told you.] You ask how her life here is, and she hesitates. "The farm work is all right," she says at last. "Mistress isn't so bad, really, especially compared to the others. But the mine--it's a lot worse. I worked over there when I was first brought here, and it was awful. I was real glad to get to come to this side." You ask what she wants, and she shakes her head. "I don't know," she says softly. "I don't know where my family is, you see. If I could do anything I wanted, I guess I'd try to find them. But I don't know how to even begin."

Bralin is asking similar questions. "The mine is on the other side of the main camp," the male slave explains. "There's a path over by the infirmary. How many?" He scratches at his beard for a moment. "Eighty-four, I think. Something like that."

Rill tidies himself up while continuing to concentrate on his Probe Psyche ability. He can tell that Mistress Hych's real failing is that she's not very brave. She doesn't stand up to people. She's what is sometimes called a "born follower," and unfortunately, she's been following these knaves.

He asks Mistress Hych to tell you all about the operations here, and she does.

--The island is owned by a group of wealthy Aisildurans whom she has never met.
--Voss Orland was the manager of the operation; he was the one in contact with the owners
--Under Orland, Elzor Hammerborn ran the day-to-day operations at the mine
--Also under Orland, Sukey Hych (her name's Sukey) ran the farm
--The farm isn't a money-making endeavor; its purpose is to feed everybody. The mine is where the investors make their profit.
--The main camp includes an admin building where Orland, Hammerborn, and Hych live and work; a small barracks for the guards and overseers; a larger barracks for the slaves; an infirmary; and a kitchen and mess. She tells you where all this stuff is, and where the mine is, too.

Following along to see the rest of the mining operation, Zod ponders the heroes' new direction under Captain Zeoll. Freeing all the slaves in the Middle Seas is certainly a noble goal, but the full scope of the undertaking is almost beyond the minotaur's imagination, and the repercussions seem like they might fall on an even broader scale.

Here the Black Lions are gathering together a group of people who've had no free will for who knows how long, and turning them loose to do as they wish. Not really problematic itself, it still raises the question of exactly how much the Liberators owe the newly freed slaves. Most do not know where their family is, or how to get to them, or even what else they might do.

Zod begins drafting plans in his head to establish some sort of recovery system, with staff working to connect families, find appropriate work for willing laborers, and provide other options & resources for the growing number of freed slaves.

"Seems like the whole of this disgusting trade might have ties back to the Aisildurian Empire." He muses aloud. "I wonder if our Dark Elf friend Adderhand has his fingers in this pie as well.."

You ask to be shown the mine.

"Of course," says Mistress Hych. "Whatever you want." She glances at her workers before starting back up the path toward the main camp. Neither she nor the workers seem to know what they're supposed to do, so they end up trooping along in your wake.

You reach the main camp--and find the two remaining guards, clearly awakened from their daytime slumber and somewhat disheveled. They are armored and carrying their halberds though. They look at your group, and the other captured guards, and seem uncertain what to do next. One gives his halberd a rather half-hearted brandish. "Halt," he says feebly. "Really?" says his companion, throwing down his halberd and putting up his hands. After a moment, the first guard follows suit, and both can be captured.

Other than the recently-awakened guards, the main camp is deserted at this time of day. Mistress Hych wastes little time in leading you past the infirmary and up another path. Now you can hear the sounds of the mine; picks striking rock, people moving, the murmur of voices. There is a fine dust in the air.

You reach the open-pit mine, which is a hive of activity. Diggers in the pit scoop chunks of rock and dirt into baskets, which are carried up to a group of children, who sift through them looking for ore. The remaining overseer, garbed exactly like the ones you saw earlier, is cracking his whip at a group of slaves hauling baskets out of the mine. "Move, dogs!" he shouts. Once we free these people, this will likely not be a safe place for you. Though we would like to reunite these slaves with their families, I'm sure that will not work out for all. They will need someone who can organize them into a community and teach them how to care for themselves.

Zeoll calls for the overseer to surrender, backed by Reggie and Terser looking their most menacing. The overseer doesn't exactly surrender; he drops his whip and tries to run away, but I'll assume you run him down and capture him.

Zod uses a spell to create water. Immediately, and without being told, the four children from the farm begin helping to distribute it to the thirsty miners.

Zeoll looks for signs that the slaves are being abused. They are not starved, but several sport bruises and/or lash marks. Many seem fearful, and none of them seem to know quite what to make of you.

Bralin, recovering from his first glimpse of what humans call "mining," approaches one of the slaves and tells him he is free. "Really?" the man says, setting down his basket. A suspicious look comes over his face. "And what do you want in return?"

Rill takes the opportunity to have a word with Mistress Hych. "Me?" she says, obviously surprised. "You want me? Um, well, but...I mean, I'm happy to try, but I've never really been in charge of anything before. I would like to help, but maybe somebody else should actually run things."

Gradually, the slaves in the mines start to realize that their days of slavery are coming to an end. One by one, they put down their tools and make their way out of the mine, looking dirty, bewildered, a little frightened, and very hopeful.

Jozhur starts looking around for valuables. Including the loot you've already taken off the opponents you defeated, you wind up with:

+2 chain shirt, +2 heavy wooden shield, +1 human bane morningstar, cold iron dagger, cloak of resistance +1 (8), elemental gem (earth), headband of inspired wisdom +2, ring of counterspells (dispel magic), ring of protection +2, robe of bones, silver holy symbol of Ga’al, +1 dwarven waraxe, masterwork full plate, +1 heavy steel shield,+1 banded mail (4), +1 heavy flail (4), belt of giant strength +2 (11), masterwork whip (4), +1 full plate (6), +1 halberd (6), composite longbow (+4 Str) (6).

With Bralin's help, Jozhur also searches the offices. You find some cash in the office amounting to about 5,000 gold. You find papers detailing the operations here, and the expected arrival of the owners for inspection. They are not due for several months.

Rill and Zeoll turn their thoughts to logistics--how to get everyone off the island? And how to handle the Middle Seas in the future? Zeoll finds that he can keep a rough idea of the geography in his head, but you'll want Tula's charts if you want to do actual navigation.

Terser watches as the slaves--former slaves--make their way out of the pit mine. Because it is a big open pit, you can pretty much see everybody from the top. Everybody makes it out on their own power, though you see a couple of people limping or looking ill.

The farm kids continue distributing water, as long as there is water to distribute. Everybody else kind of mills around, wondering what to do next.

Zeoll is glad to realize that the owners are not returning anytime soon. He double checks with the Mistress and prisoners and slaves to confirm that they expect no ships to arrive for months.

With no immediate danger discernable, Zeoll first and foremost tries to reunite Madra and her three children. Hopefully that's possible.

Then it is time to get word to Tula and the crew. They should not be worrying longer than necessary.

Then Zeoll suggests staying here for at least a few days or a week. Here are his goals:

1) He wants to talk with all the people here, get their names, stories, heal their wounds and diseases. He wants to list the ones who want to go home, wherever that may be, and where that might be. He wants to list those who seek a reunion with loved ones. And a list of those who may want to live here or on Market Island, once a fortress and protection was arranged.

2) He wants to figure out with his friends what the overall goal is, what our next steps are, and where we go from here. Do we like the goal of solving the problems with Bonetown, and do we like the solution of converting a pirate fleet into something like a protective navy of privateers? If not, then what do we do with Bonetown? Maybe we just wash our hands of the area and do something else? Zeoll has always wanted to sail north and west exploring, maybe looking for a new wemic homeland. But whatever it is, the party needs a purpose.

"Our next action, after seeing to these people, should be hunting down this Felaer Deadfall that apparently purchased my old mentor, Tobias. I have a feeling many of these folks' wishes will also lead us to more slavers."

Zod goes on to outline a more long-term plan:

We could establish multiple islands, each with a purpose - a nursery/school for orphaned young, to start. After their rearing and education, the youth are given a choice - train and fight in the privateer fleet, labor in the mines, farm, or one-way passage to Bonetown, for those who would seek their own fortune. All of the Black Lions' funded operations would be paid gigs, of course. The mine could help offset costs, eventually the school could be opened to the public for modest tuition, if we can attract enough scholars to establish an institution.

Seeing Rill and Zeoll have the island's occupants' needs in-hand, Zod follows Reggie to the dock to speak with Tula and inspect the keelboat tied up there. Perception 33. With no knowledge of sailing, the minotaur asks the pirate-woman how many they can safely transport between the two ships?

Terser sees justice in giving the coinage to the freedmen, as well as in setting them up in their own settlement here should they wish it. The island is obviously habitable, and it seems unlikely that the owners would come here anytime soon.

"My only worry is that in a year or so, the owners do come back to check on their investment. Rill, could you scribe a message scroll for them? We can teach someone how to use it, and they can call on us to assist if they need help repelling any invaders. I bet we could find a weaponsmaster in Bonetown to train some of the former miners, and maybe even one of the Brothers' acolytes to help out and call us if needed."

Rill makes sure all the slaves understand that they have been freed. You are able to locate Madra's three children, dirty and frightened, but in reasonably good health.

Zeoll escorts the three back to the Lionfish, where there is a joyful reunion between mother and children. You are able to assure Tula and the crew that all is well.

Reggie tags along to look at the keelboat. You can tell that it is seaworthy, and essentially ready to sail once provisions are laid in. You're pretty sure Mistress Hych can help with that.

Jozhur and Terser suggest distributing the coin to the newly-freed slaves, and all of you begin discussing alternatives.

By dangerously overloading both the Lionfish and the keelboat, you could probably get everybody off the island at once. This starts out as a bad idea, and gets worse when Mistress Hych points out that the cows and chickens really shouldn't be left here to fend for themselves. There's no way to get all the people and the livestock on the two boats.

You could safely get a little more than half the people onto the two boats. Asking around, you discover that some of the former slaves are captured sailors, and would be able to sail the keelboat.

Some of the former slaves remember where they came from, and want to go back there. Still others have definite ideas about where they would like to start over. All of them begin pressing their newly-won coins into your hands, offering to pay for their passage if you'll take them where they need to go.

The trouble with leaving people here permanently is that this island is legally owned by the group from Aisildur. Those who stayed would be squatters, and could legally be evicted--or possibly even re-enslaved--when the owners returned. That's not likely to happen for a few months, but it's something to keep in mind, especially since you can't get everybody off now.

Also, Zod points out that you still have one person to rescue. And back on the Lionfish, Tula reports that the catatonic elf woman you took from Market Island is beginning to show signs of awareness. Perhaps she is ready to talk.

Zeoll makes a list in his field manual of all the people on the island, and how many want passage elsewhere, and how many might want to stay. He offers the minors the chance to own the mine collectively, and to share in its profits equally and fairly. He asks who would stay if the Lionfishers went to bring their families here.

If Comeri is very close to Aisildur, then maybe this can't happen, if it is too close to the nation of Aisildur to claim. But if it is not near the coast, then Zeoll is inclined to claim the island, in the name of Bonetown and the Lionfish, as partial repayment to the slaves who labored here.

He asks who in the party can cast spells to send messages, in dreams, maybe.

Then he agrees that it is time to go search for Zod's master and find a way to freedom for him. Where is it the fellow is at?

And what is that poor woman's story? Maybe she can be coaxed to speak of it, or at least to let us know if she has kin or friends elsewhere.

This is all getting a bit above Bralin's head. The dwarf lives happily in a tactical world, and the Black Lions are working on some serious strategic decisions.

As for the boats, "mayhap Rill teleports to Bonetown and hires more ships, while we wait for his return?" he offers. "Thus all may leave, and we do not risk endangering anyone while we are away."

The biggest problem, as he sees it, is how to defend any ground gained.
"We are but eight, best suited to attack. To defend multiple islands requires our own standing guard, led, fed, and trained by others we may pick out, but cannot be us. The captains at Bonetown would be an asset, should they agree. What do we offer to get that agreement?"

"All we know is that a man named Felar Deadfall purchased the old soldier, Tobias." Zod reminds Zeoll "Perhaps we can ask around at our next port(s) to find out who this Faelar Deadfall is?"

As the magnitude of the party's grand endeavor sinks in, with two questions for every solution, Zod finds himself agreeing with Bralin. The minotaur ultimately has little else to impart from his time in the wilds or his stint with the Fist.

"Regarding the Captains of Bonetown, or other potential partners, the office here must have a rough value of the island listed somewhere. Less the slaves, that's the start of one bargaining chip. Sending Rill for support to offload everyone isn't a bad idea either, if the Priest agrees?"

As he idly caresses the 14ft snake wrapped about his shoulders, Zod ponders a way to connect the dots in their budding, disparate sovereignty. "I will take stock with my next meditation, and let you know what messages I can send and how. Perhaps consorting with a higher power will yield a yet-unseen answer."

Zeoll grins and shares a thought he has been having with Bralin and the rest of the Lionfishers. Imagine that we can scry anytime we want on a range of locations. Imagine that we can take a minute and look at Merchant Island, Comeri, Bonetown, and a few other spots. Imagine that our people in these locations know to fly flags or light signal fires if they need help, or are under attack.

Now imagine that if we get a signal of a place that needs defense, and then we teleport to that location. No need for an army. No need for standing defense forces. We just travel instantly as needed to get where we need to be.

Zeoll has an idea of a way to accomplish all that.

As regards the missing mentor and his buyer, Zeoll makes them the focus of his dream-divination, hoping for answers between dusk and dawn.
