Rum is Sweet, Not bitter

Dm Shawn - Suggestion
Monday July 13th, 2015 9:53:36 AM

Ooc: I misunderstood. I thought you were leaving Elstred in Bonetown. ( Just confirm if yoh brought him and ill post what Zeoll finds out)

After a few days at sea to Rum, the crew is awoken early when a call comes down from the crow's nest.

"Land Ho" the watcher yells down. " The city of Rum is in our sight."

As the ship cuts through the water, and moves closer to Rum the city can be seen in all its splendor. The morning is new, and already ships are heading in and out of the docks. Flags from ships all around the Wold are part of the trade route of Rum and their market of colossal shrimp and other trade. A friendly wave, or a cautious look are thrown from ships passing the Lionfish. It seems everyone, and every country is getting a piece of the trade in Rum.

Once inside the harbor, a skiff with one rider comes up close to the ship. The man on board is a portly, disheveled man but he has a huge smile on his face.

He waves his arms to anyone on the Lionfish, "Woh there" he yells up. " New ship in the harbor I see. No charge to dock, but please use any slip on the wooden piers. Loading or unloading? Ahh... none of my business. After you dock head over to the Harbormaster's office and give him your slip number."
"It is good to see some new ships coming here after the darkness." he says still with the smile.

ooc: I thought one of the last DM posts indicated Elstred was staying in Bonetown with Coer

The trip gives Magana and Rillett time to have a theological discussion, and Rillett may be surprised to find a well educated mind behind the cantankerous persona she displays publicly.

"I have read the most common writings about Gargul in the hopes of understanding His will, but it seems to me that many times the writings are colored by the author's point of view or base desires. While this is undoubtedly to be expected from mere mortals, it does leave me with some... hesitancy... in deciding how I might best serve His will. I almost think He can not truly care about the mortal plane so long as His domain is not in impinged upon."

One fun part of travel at sea is the chance to get out and stretch your fins and flipper. Hash so often spent much time in a form that flew or fought, it was easy to forget how nice it was to swim fast and deep for a chance.

Often either chasing Aexana or whatever random fish he might stumble across, he enjoys the time out in the ocean.

In regards to Elstred, Hashamon doesn't seem to much mind him. The others have a much larger interest in the man than he. While curious about Bilpool, he finds the man Elstred very uninteresting. He does find time to spend with Zeoll.

"Zeoll, how did you come to worship the Fey King and Queen? Was it always so?"

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC24 / 17 no shield - HP 55)

[OOC: Zeoll is good either way, leaving Elstred or taking him. Sorry I got confused. Also, kindly DM: Any Read Dream insight on how to approach the Temple of Gargul?]

Zeoll smiles sadly at Hashamon and answers him in common so that others nearby can hear.

"No, my frriend, in my youth I honorred Domi, the fatherr of all taurrs. I was even blessed at the beginning of my carreerr to meet the god himself, He charrged me and my frriends with a grreat quest, one at which we ultimately failed. He wanted peace and fellowship among all the Taurrs, not the fighting and hatrred that is still all too common. We worrked harrd forr yearrs, we Chosen of Domi, and I hope ourr good example at least helped change some attitudes beforre the grroup faded away. Look at us two herre, a minotaurr and a liontaurr, speaking with rrespect."

Zeoll takes out a signet ring from his pouch and shows the symbol of the Chosen of Domi to Hash. Then he stows it away carefully.

"But as forr me, I died in Domi's serrvice, and I spent a few yearrs in the Lands of Rrest. Therre I firrst learrned of Queen Maab, and then of herr husband when the Darrk Fey rrose. As a barrd and drruid, as I was then, I learrned even morre. Finally, when I felt I could not prray to Domi with the prride I used to have, I turrned to Gentle Maab, and she answerred my prrayers."

Elstred is not with us. We left him in Bonetown with Coer. We should notify the Shipping Guild here in Rum about what happened in Bonetown - they may want to get orders to those Guild ships that were under Elstred's command. They may also want to direct the Captain of the Ariel to secure that ledger with the "H.O.D." payments.

Terser is too indecisive to buy anything nice for himself, so he just continues to hoard his coins until he can find something that speaks to him. Having a shield was nice - maybe there's some way to make that more permanent.

While the darkness that the greeter spoke of must have been interesting, it seems to have gone away for the moment. Doesn't seem too dark to me, though we did arrive with the Sun. Think it's something we'll have to worry about?

Rillet can tell the man appears to be hiding nothing and is genuinely happy. The man flinches when he sees Rillet begin casting a spell. " Woh... woh. I dont know how the Lionfish is treated in other ports but in Rum we usually say hello, or atleast buy a drink before casting spells on each other." He says with a laugh. For his efforts, Rillet knows this man and his skiff have no magic.

" The sky was as dark as night like someone turned the sun off. I heard monstrous demons walked around, but that was old Tully sipping his juice again " he says with a laugh. " But thanks to the WLA and our heroes all is taken care of."

"Think its something we'll have to worry about? " Terser asks. " Hopefullu not " the man answers. " Been clear tge past few days."

Hash listens intently to Zeolls story. It was so much different for himself, after all.

Landfall in another city has Hash fairly on edge. He is a bit surly during the approach, trying to busy himself with manual labor where he can.

"I hope to find that this city is unlike the last. I've yet to see why exactly the civilized world considers itself in condition than that of the natural one."

Before the crew debarks, Zeoll casts his Mage Armor on himself and asks if anyone else would like one? Hash? Aexana?

He also makes sure that Rillet and Terser and anyone else who can channel positive energy knows about the party's phylactery that boosts such healing. Zeoll is carrying it but not wearing it, and he sees it as his job to make it available to anyone who channels, both in and out of combat.

Also note the +2 on your first save if you chatted with Zeoll about Eberyon on the journey.

Potions made before and during the trip:
- Cure serious wounds: 1 hour

- Remove Paralysis: 2 hours
Since that's about 8 hours of crafting I'd say that's the max Aex could make in Bonetown. All potions are now stored in lifewood flasks Aex carries. They don't expire thanks to the lifewood.

DM, is it possible Aex brought herbs needed for more potions during the trip at sea? For how many hours could she have brought herbs?

Direct... Honest... Prepared Zeoll hears in his dreams. This was a mission from the gods, and its outcome is already known

Magana asks about the temple and the man thinks for a second before blurting out. " Avenue of the gods.. along with every other temple or church."

Scullying into their slip, dockhands graciously accept the ropes( and any tips) and tie the ship down to the dock, securing it into Slip. If asked for the harbormasters office, the deckhands point to a stone building on the lone stone pier.

The walks is quick, and the docks are full of bustle and work. The obvious site, is the gigantic colossal shrimp that are being cut and cleaned on the docks. Obviously the biggest export of rum.

The door to the Harbormaster's office is open to let the warm breeze in. Once inside, the room is rather large, with a stone desk dead center. On the walls are copies of maps, and trade routes. Charts with the name of ships, cargo and if they are coming in or heading out. On another wall, the listing of every slip and the ships in those spots. A large man, standing half a foot over six, with a big barrel chest looks up from the his journal that he is writing in. His bushy red beard hides his mouth completely. Mena and women are moving back and forth, pulling names off of one wall or spot and placing it on another, dropping parchments and maps off on the desk of the harbormaster. Atleast a dozen different people are all moving about busy at work. At least one stops by the party and points to the man behind the desk, and before answering any questions heads right back to work.

"Aye... new ship I am guessing. Never seen you in my harbor before. Bringing a load in, or picking one up?" the harbormaster bellows from behind the desk.

Terser Is still getting used to having something on his brow.

Rillet waits, not saying much. After a minute of observation, he knows the man is LN. He is a hardworking man, who cares about the docks and running them in a orderly manner.

Jozhur hands the man their slip number, which he scribes down. " Eh... the darkness. Some oddness if you asked me. Seems the gods were upset with something. It's a good thing we have some powerful friends here to help.

Hashamon feels to new to the situation, and stays back keeping quiet.

Zeoll mentions they have no cargo, other then themselves and the harbormaster looks up, obviously annoyed. " Wasting a slip to visit the temple? So be it, but I am giving you a 48 hour visitation only." He doesn't believe the group is on a holy mission, as his eyes rolled harder then a ball down a hill.

Magana sticks by the door, watching for trouble(which there is none.) The bustle and movement of the docks is a fluid machine.

Aexana looks at the charts. None stick out to her, or are obvious names. A few hail from Plateau City, but those ships also don't seem familiar to her.

A man walks over and pulls the slip number of the lionfish, and files it into a slot on the wall. He writes the name of the ship on the chart with the slip numbers.

"Listen,, this place is super busy. The collossal shrimp have exploded and we need to have everything moving along. Including using any open slips, as we see fit. If you are planning on heading to the temple, I suggest a guide because I really don't have much time to provide directions."

Rillett will keep an eye on our guide, asking him, "so, what happens to thieves in Rum?" He will also look around us.

Rillet, Terser and Jozhur don't see any accomplices.

The cut purse begins moving closer to Zeoll. He puts his hands up, palms facing the party. Magana steps forward and grabs the man.

" woh, woh.... I found the purse on the streets, nothing was stolen. I was headed to the WLA right now to turn it in."

As if on cue, some men appear next to the group. Their sashes showing them members of the Wla. They show no aggression, but their hands rest on their weapons.

" Up to stealing again Thorson?" one of them asks the man as he reaches his hand towards Zeoll, gesturing for the purse

. "Thanks for the help, but we can handle Thorson from here. He gets busted for this every couple of months. " He looks the group up and down. " Haven't seen your likes in the area before, business or pleasure?" One of the men whispers something into his ear, and the man nods. " my name is Malloy and I understand you are the crew of the Lionfish. Your name and reputation proceeded you from the docks. Well met."

As the guard talks, the whispering man heads over to a second group. A minotaur, big human, half elf and elf stand by the entrance to the WLA headquarters. The guard whispers something to them, and they look over, nod in agreement and head into the building. The guard heads back over, and whispers back into Malloy's ear.

" A night in cells for you Thorson." Malloy adds." Not even in Rum an hour and your already catching bandits. My kind of people."

Terser is glad to see that their reception in Rum has been so positive, especially after the recent fiascos in Gullport and Bonetown. Maybe things are looking up for the crew of the 'Fish. Or mayhaps Gargul himself is smoothing their way so there are no impediments to their reaching his temple.

Perhaps after the find out their business with the God, they'll have time to come back to WLA HQ to share a pint and some tales.

"Greetings and well met, Malloy of the WLA. Nice sash.

"We are the Black Lions of the Lionfish. I am surprised to see that such a far reaching organization as the Woldian League of Adventurers serves as the local sheriff here in Rum. You should consider setting up a chapter house in Bonetown. You would certainly not lack for things to do there.

"I'm interested in what the WLA does and represents in the Wold, but that conversation will need to wait for another time. We have an urgent matter matter that requires our attention."

Rillett will turn to our guide, "Rodrigo, if you will lead us to the Temple of Gargul."

Aex didn't quite figure out what happened to the collossal shrimps but when the cut purse turns up there are other matters of more uregency. Once apprehended and the WLA comes into play Aex's genuinly intrigued. Not often has she seen member of the WLA! She hungers to ask some of them why they joined, what they learned? Does the WLA accpet tiny Gnomes such as herself?!?

Zeoll smiles and hands over the thief to the WLA types. Evidently the organization has set itself up here as a kind of town guard.

The old liontaur introduces himself with a bardic flourish that hearkens back to his youth.

He takes a chance and asks the fellows, "Have you good sirrs hearrd anything about the evil cult god Biloopl? We have battled herr minions rrecently, and we arre concerrned that she is attacking otherr good folk around these seas."

Hashamon was surprised the thief was getting off so easy. He had always heard stories of lost fingers, hands, and eventually lives for thievery.

The restraint was encouraging. He would have to see more about this WLA.

Like Hashamon, Jozhur is pleased with the treatment of the thief. He nods in agreement with Rillet, a WLA outpost in Bonetown wouldn't be a bad idea at all, but that is something to be discussed later.

Jozhur briefly flashes his WLA pin, "I guess I never mentioned that I'm among the ranks of the WLA, it's just never been of much significance outside of Rum. I'm sure they would welcome you jn Aex, they don't discriminate."

Malloy thinks for a second before shaking his head no. " I don't know that name. I wonder if it has anything to do with the darkness we had hanging over us. I'd tell you to chat with our heroes, but they are headed to the Floating CIty as we speak. If your headed to the temple, that is probably your best course of action."

"As for any of you joining the WLA, we would love to have you. You seem to be busy, but we are always here."

At the showing of Jozhur's pin, Malloy smiles big. "Well met, I knew I liked you guys for some reason. Well with that, we wish you well on your journey, and a nice ale will be waiting for you."

Malloy and his men say their goodbyes and head back to the WLA building. Rodrigo heads right off leading the group to their destination.

At the end of the Avenue of the Gods, the temple to Gargul can be seen. It's walls and roof rise higher than any other building on the Avenue and it is still being added to! The Avenue holds temples and churches of many gods, even gods of Testing have representatation. Some of the major gods though, do not have a temple on the street or their temple is smaller then the others. The temple of Gargul is by far the most prominant. It's black marble on one side of the building, contrasts to the white marble on the other side.

Moving closer the party can see men moving around, working on various parts of the building. A scaffold made out of bamboo surrounds the building. Off to the side, a group of men are working around a slab of marble. The man in the middle is an older man, standing over six feet tall. His grey hair shows he has lived many winters already, and the slash through his left, dead eye shows he has seen his share of battles. He reaches up to a symbol of Gargul and silently mouths a prayer while laying his other hand on the marble. A thin line appears, and the marble gently cuts in half. He says something to one of the the other men, and as a group they take the slab of marble away. Once the group is gone, he notices the party coming closer.

"Looking for work or guidance?" he asks as he wipes his hands on his cloak. " We need both it would seem." he adds with a genuine smile. "Eye of Gargul Cicero" he says while extending his hand.

Aex makes a note to herself to go and get that ale at the WLA building later. She wants to learn more about them. See if she's cut out of the right material to be a member of such an elite group.

Later, as the group approaches the temple of Gargul, Aex feels very small. She's short in the company of her Tauric friends, but here under the shadow of the vast temple of the Grey Lord she feels but a tiny bug...
When questioned, the little Gnome looks up to her friends expecting their own followers of Gargul to speak up...

Terser heartily shakes the hand of Cicero, accepting his welcome and admiring the masterful stonework that is going into the construction of this magnificent temple.

Quite the edifice you got going here, and thanks for the friendly welcome. We have business here from the Lord himself, but I think our friends who know him better than I would be better at explaining it.

He makes a special note to introduce Rillett and Magana to Cicero.

He is respectful toward the priest, and wonders if he will be threatened by the group's close recent interactions with his god.

Well, time to find out.

Silver-tongued and silver-maned, Zeoll explains the group's history with Lord Gargul. and asks for the priest's advice on next steps.

Rillett will pay our guide a couple gold, thanking him for his service.

Rillett presents himself to this priest, dressed in white with the all-white eyes of a Soulseeker. Unnerving to some, but certainly not to this man.

"I am pleased to meet you Cicero. I am Soulseeker Rillett Savenport, and I bring you greetings from Yaas Farril, the High Priest of Gargul at the Temple of Rest in Bonetown. He told me I to seek you out but he did not say why." Rillett smiles in warm greeting and adds, "mostly, I think he wanted me out of his hair.

"May I also present Magana, a mighty fighter and an Eye of Gargul.
He will introduce any that have not introduced themselves.

"Our Lord has sent these people to your temple here in Rum, and they were kind enough to bring me along. They tell me that they were recently before the Throne of the Dead, where they spoke with our Lord when he brought this gnome, Aexana, back from death to life. In doing so, he told them to come here."

"And so, we are here, hoping that you can tell us why we are here. Also, when we arrived we were told there was a darkness that fell over Rum, and we are interested to know more about that as well."

Cicero immediately cuts them off... his face takes on a grave, ashen color.

" We have dealt with it in Rum too it appears. We had a great darkness hovering over our city, and only thanks to some of the men and women from the Rum adventuring group were we able to get out of it. Supposedly some men from the shipping guild were involved, as were some politicians. "
" As for our Lord Gargul, you met him, and he sent you to us. Must be something important. Come inside, and we can discuss it further with our leader High-Eye of Gargul Crenshaw.

The steps, like many temples across the wold, is littered with the dregs of society who beg for coinage. Some of the workers are harrased, but ignore them to beg for coinage. Cicero, who has probably see these people countless times, also ignores them for now.

Inside, the temple is rich by appearances, but is still being worked on. Its grandeur is apparent, and will be off the charts when completed. He leads them passed the main temple, to a room in the back. A table is set up with a dozen strong, oak chairs. He motions to sit as he heads for one of the double doors, one white/ one black. He returns a few minutes later with another man, a decade older. They both take seats and then Eye of Gargul Cicero gives himself and the group a blessing.

"What is it you seek?" High-Eye of Gargul Crenshaw asks without any pleasentries.

"The where sent by Lord... "Cicero starts, but stops when he sees Crenshaw looking at him.

"Please in your own words then, tell me why you think you were sent here."

Lord Gargul bestowed great favour upon us by allowing our friend to return from his halls. His only request was that we come here to serve him. We hope to honour his gift by offering our service. If I were to speculate, then I would imagine it has something to do with hindering Billoopl, as that has been the reason behind our interactions with the Gods thus far. And they seem to happen more often than the usual denizen of the Wold.

Somewhat shy and impressed by all this grandeur Aex softly speaks...

"It was by my mistakes that I was about to make my last quest into the Lands of Rest... but my friends here petitioned Lord Gargul for my return. For this I not only owe Lord Gargul my neverending gratitude but also this group. It is in such times that friendship and love is most deeply shown. Lord Gargul adviced me to foresee in magic aids that will avoid me plummeting to the ground once again and I took his advice to heart... (Aex shows the Ring of Feather Fall)
As such, since we were called for, it is my sworn duty to present myself to his mercy once again. "
