Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Dm Shawn - Another one?
Sunday March 22nd, 2015 9:54:09 AM

The night passes with no more attempts to stick the party with a nice, sharp weapon. Those on watches at the house see nothing all night. Zeoll sleeping comfortably under the stars on the deck of the Lionfish, with the rest of the group secured in their bedrooms at the headquarters. A good nights sleep is what the group needs before setting sail for Rum and it comes at a good time.

In the morning, the entire house is woken to the smell of cooking bacon, Even Zeoll made it back in time to break his fast before setting sail.

Brother Engev, moves around the room, letting the bacon cook over the fire. The aroma fills the house, and for once everything seems as if it has become relaxed.... and then someone knocks on the door.

Aex wakes up with the scent of freshly baked bacon! She quickly fteshens up, puts on her travelling outfit and joins the others at the breakfast table.

When someone knocks at the door she turns her face to see who comes in...

Zeoll rises with the dawn as usual, says his prayers, and prepares his spells. His divine ones, anyway. Just before he leaves the ship, he casts his Mage Armor and puts up his shield. Then back to the house for breakfast ... and it is BACON!

The old liontaur eats more than his fair share, not even looking guilty about it.

"Liontaurs are carnivores," he mutters around his third helping.

When the knock on the door comes, his ears prick up.

Magana sighs resignedly, looking longingly at the plate of bacon she'd managed to gather under Zeoll's watchful eye, and rises to meet their caller.

Zeoll has traveled with centaurs and minotaurs for many years, and he has learned not to talk to them about how he thought herd animals only liked grass and veggies. He especially never asks minotaurs if they like burgers and steaks.

As he thinks these thoughts of vegetarianism vs cannibalism, he says a little prayer to his Queen "Lady, help me enjoy the delicious meat you have given us" [casting a Guidance spell]. Then the old liontaur tries to sneak some extra bacon off Magana's plate when she gets up to answer the door.

Terser ignores the knocking at the door. It's not often he gets a treat such as this. And besides, he's a guest in this house, and he would not dream of imposing on the rights of his hosts. He does hold a secret hope that it's the dairy man, come bringing fresh milk and eggs to go along with the bacon. And maybe the pie man bringing dessert...

Dm Shawn - Another one?

Zeoll eats many plates of the cooked bacon, but the others get their fill as well.

Jozhur decides manners should be in order, and decides to open the door.

To Terser's dismay, there is no milk man, pie man or any other delivery service. Standing before him is a human male, with another person next to him. The second person's wrists are bound by rope, and he is unable to move. Upon further review, you all realize he is one of the men from lasts nights attacks.

The human has a chain around his neck, with a symbol around it.

Farril tells me the time has come to bring a new word of Gargul's work in the world. Too long has he been viewed as the god of death, for Gargul represents life as much as he does death. Terser is a much scarred dwarf wearing a breastplate. In the hand he's not shaking with is a glaive decorated with the talons and teeth of a wyvern. He often uses it as a sort of walking staff, not from a need of support, but rather so that it is quickly at hand if needed. Judging from his height, it would also be somewhat awkward if he tried to strap it on his back.

Rillett Savenport (Bradley)
Wednesday March 25th, 2015 8:01:08 PM

[What a Knowledge -- History roll of 25 might reveal about Rillett's history. Bear in mind that many tales are more interesting that what actually happened.]
Some years ago, Madam Kuulia Havennight ran a very popular and wealthy brothel in Bonetown, and when she died her loss left a bit of a power vacuum in Bonetown. Many important people were at her funeral in the Temple of Rest [Gargul's main temple in Bonetown] that night. Funerals at the Temple had become a place to do business of all sorts. As usual, the Acolytes of Gargul moved among the crowd, reminding the attendees to contribute what they can, lest they join Kuulia in rest that night. Enforcers at the door sought to intimidate the attendees to contributing all they had to the coffers the Acolytes carried.

The story goes that a young man from a rough family showed up at this funeral, looking quite out of place. This was Rillet Savenport. With Rillett were members of his unsavory "banking" family who enforced their loans with much pain and sorrow. As Rillett moved into the crowd, those with him slew any that drew near. Some say that it was Rillett that slew them with but a touch. At the alter, he confronted the High Priest Yaas Farril. As Rillet approach, Yaas sneered, "who are you that comes to disturb the peace of the dead? Who are you to wear the symbol of Gargul? Leave now, lest you join those that have gone before you."

Rillet struck Yaas Farril and said that heretics that had invaded the faith, that the High Priest and his ilk only sought profit in life and death, and that Rillett had come to restore order. He admonished those in attendance that they had no place here. They will learn to show respect for life and death, lest Gargul call to an eternal rest that would be anything but restful. It is generally assumed that these the Temple had not paid sufficient protection funds to the Savenport family, and an example had to be made of them.

It is said that from that day forward Rillett controlled the High Priest Yaas Farril, who feigned repentance. The High Priest was somehow blinded to ensure his obedience. Yaas was then regarded as weak, a mere puppet, and it is rumored that the Savenport family assumed control of the Temple of Rest for their own profit. The Temple and the Clergy of Gargul put on the appearance of having cleaned up their act, but this is clearly a ruse to confuse the populace and to hide the true power behind the High Priest.

Pain and sorrow follows Rillett Savenport, for wherever he is, his family is not far behind

Dm Shawn - Another one?
Wednesday March 25th, 2015 8:28:20 PM

The two men, have different stories to share with the group. The priest is more forthcoming, but the rogue doesn't act agresive. When Jozhur steps forward and hands the man 10 gold pieces, he just continues to stare at him. Finally looking down at the small fortune in his hand, he swoons a bit, using the hand not holding the coins to support himself on the wall.

" Oh my Gods" is all he can. " Oh my gods, oh my gods" He even lowers his voice, and whispers to himself the mantra over and over again.

" My children, wife, myself and anyone else I tell about this will thank you kindly good sir."

He slinks away, and heads for the door as quickly as possible. Biting a coin he swings the door open, and almost runs into third man standing at the door about to knock. The rogue hurriedly runs past him and down the street.

The young man at the door pulls his hand away from the knocker, and adjusts his cloak. His dress shows him to be a member of the shipping guild.

" Sorry about that." he says as he clears his throat. "Sirs and Madames, our leader the honorable Elstred Gorstrom, otherwise known as Supreme Captain Gorstrom, otherwise known as Gorstrom, Shipping Guilds representative of the Bonetown Area, who in his shipping days made the Northern to Southern Continent run faster than any other captain deemed capable, cordially requests the presence of the heroes of Bonetown. The heroes who brought salvation to Gullport and the heroes who bring a light of hope to what might otherwise be a hopeless town"

The young man hands the group a rolled up parchment, sealed with an emblem of wax in a bluish, grayish hue. The seal shows a ship with flames, left on the ocean surface presumably due to the ships speed.

Terser hopes the chat is a small one with the shipping guild.

Aexana asks Rillett what is going on. Aparently, the new dude is newer then this dude. So maybe he knows.

Rillett gets the sense the man is telling the truth, and doesn't come down as agressive. In fact, he appears totally calms at the moment.

Before Zeoll can read the mans note, Coerator educates Rillett on the pecking order of the ship, and how he will have to work for travel .

Once Zeoll opens the parchment he reads:

Terser also waits in interest for the results of this clerical magic. His own magic is somewhat limited, and most of the charms he was familiar with were things that Sam would do. Asking for help from directly from a God is somewhat different in magnitude, and that Rillett does it so casually is a tad astounding.

A dinner doesn't seem to be the right format for honouring Terza's memory, and I don't know what insights we can offer, we only knew Terza a short time. Terser agrees that a short meeting would likely be more than adequate, at least until they return from their business in Rum.

Rillet accepts the terms of Captain Coerator, and even manages to sneak a piece of bacon. He casts an augury spell, and feels like it will be good to meet with the shipping guild leader.

Magana doesn't like the idea of extending the time before they set sail, but a dinner in tribute of Terza is something she does agree with.

Jozhur wants to tell Lew and Karin, but he would have to find them out hiding in Bonetown. It wouldn't take to long as Jozhur has his ways.

Zeoll finishes reading the letter and realizes he made a mistake. He says sorry to the courier, to which the man just nods. He has been put in that position before apparently. He listens to Zeoll's questioning if they could meet right now instead.
"He is a busy man, but I am sure he wouldn't mind changing to satisfy your demands. He wants to celebrate Terza, and the time of the day or food you eat won't change that."

Terser agrees with Zeoll, that perhaps a shorter meeting will be better suited so they cans till sail for Rum.

Aexana agrees on whatever decision is chosen, just as long as she gets to keep her word and head to Rum.

"Very well" the man says as he heads for the door. "We will go see Mr. Gorstrom now".

The man hastily walks outside into the morning light. The town has a light mist spraying down, and it is unseasoningly warm out. He doesn't turn back and leads a quick path towards his destination.

Coerator hurries behind the man, but not too fast to miss the stares and whispers. It is an unsettling feeling.

Zeoll is faster then the man, and it provides the opportunity to cast some spells. He too notices the sideways looks and the whispered words. Maybe it was a bad idea to meet openly with the shipping guild.

Magana keeps to the back. The words and looks don't bother her any, she is just there to provide protection to the group.

Terser tries to learn the lay of the land, but the busy roads and alleyways prove a little daunting. A few more times around the city and he would definitly know his way around. Once at the building he sees the work being done, and notices the building has some obvious wear and tear from the sea salt and wind. He lends his advice to the men working. Some of them take it with a smile, and others look at Terser odd. Not to many times advice on stonework is offered and a Bonetown street.

Aexana decides it is best to just go with the flow and let everything work itself out.

Jozhur lets the guide know he has to run to the lionfish. The man nods to Jozhur. "I will let him know you will be a bit late."

As soon as he is out of site, Jozhur heads in a different direction to get to Lew and Karin. The streets are starting to get busy and more and more pedestrians on it. It doesn't take long before one of them notices one of the local celebs. " Hey Rat.... wheres your guild buddies. Or did you stab them in the back too..." one large, obeses man yells as he pats his dirty friend on the back.

Some of the pedestrians turn around, and some point at Jozhur. Some of the whispers turn louder, and some open threats and curses are yell at him. If finding the two in this town would be hard, it has gotten much harder with the fact the entire town wants nothing of the group. After a few minutes. and a couple inns and taverns searched, Jozhur has not found the two men yet.

The group is lead into the building by the guide. Once inside everyone sees the first floor is an open tap room. Some men sit around, drinking at the bar. Discussion of the boats coming in and going out can be heard, but the guide doesn't give the group time to listen and herds them upstairs. At the top of the stairs, the guide opens a great set of doors, revealing a huge oak table behind. Enough spots for everyone in the group, and then some. A spot is even placed out for Zeoll, with pillows on the floor instead of a chair.

" Be seated, and the master will be in momentarily to join you."

Once everyone is inside, the doors close behind and the group is left to to their own.

Jozhur thinks its wise to head back with the others, and heads for the guild building. It isn't hard to find since it is the talk of the town. Once at the door, he is greeted by the guide from before who hurries him up stairs.

On the way over Rillet hears the whispers, and it makes him think this group might not be a goodly group. But Captain Coerator lets him know, in no uncertain terms they are a goodly group.

Once in the room Rillet casts Detect Magic and Detect Evil. He doesn't have time to cast the spells on the party.

Magana positions herself by the door, always watching. Terser too, walks around the room looking around and scanning. Nothing sticks out as threatning but then Both of them here a faint cough coming from the eastern wall.

Before the two can react the doors open up spooking them. A tall, handsome man walks in. His clothing is clean and looks modern and expensive. He has no armor on, but does have a mithril short sword strapped to his side. He, quietly moves to the head of the table, his tall body is topped with long, dark hair pulled back behind his ears.

" The famous members of the Lionfish, perhaps the most famous of the ships out of this port. It is my honor and privilege to meet you as I am sure you feel the same way as meeting me." Not waiting for a reply the man pours himself some wine, as he continues. He passes the wine to the person to his right.

" I understand you worked with my former colleague, who with her untimely death provided me with the ability to ascend to this new position. Now you must understand that Terza ran her office different than they way I plan to run. She was more hands off and diplomatic, and we see how Bonetown has gotten out of hand. Merchants and shippers from the other ports like Rum call this place a pirates haven and it seems to be the case in my opinion. This is unacceptable to me, as this port is not going to ruin my reputation and sully my name. I worked my way through the ranks, starting as a captain much as you did Captain Coer. I though, did not have a crew like you did. Despite my family's fortune it was only through hard work that I was able to ascend. Magana, Zeoll, Aexana, Terser, Jozhur are all well known names with the shipping guild. You are respected for your ability to enforce the right side of the laws of this land. Rillet eases up and takes some food while thanking the host. ( If you mean direct line, through walls to the street it is about 50')

Terser and Jozhur have nothing to add and continues to eat.

Magana tenses up and narrows her eys at the mentiom of miss. She also informs Elstred he is nothing like Terza. His face tenses a bit but he keeps his mouth shut.

Zeoll reminds Elstred they need to set sail soon, imbetween chomps of bacon.

Coerator doesnt like waiting either and also lets Elstred know they have to leave.

Aexana keeps quiet, and when the chance arises pockets some of the biscuits and pastries.

When everyone has finished, the wait staff promptly return and remove the trays of food before returning with a large bowl of stewed apples and a smaller bowl of cream. Elstred momentarily looks alarmed and then curiously stares at the stewed apples. He stands and to everyones astonishment, leans over the table and places his index finger right in the middle of the bowl. He withdraws his finger and studies it, before rubbing the apple juice between his thumb and finger and sniffing it. Elstred sighs as he sits back down. "Poisoned. I knew it. Desert is ruined." He drops his napkin onto the table in apparent frustration. "I know that you good adventurers didn't do this. You wouldn't want to be further soiling your name with the public with such underhanded ways and I soo want to help you with that said reputation. By allying with me and showing yourself in the company of an upstanding citizen of the Wold, it can't but help you." Elstred waves one of the wait staff back to the table to remove the inedible desert. "Oh and Edward? See that the chef is vigorously questioned" he calls after the waiter.

" So I am sure you want to know the reason I brought you here, and trust me it is a very major and touchy subject. I told you how the guild and the other ports are concerned that Bonetown is becoming a problem. A land of pirates does not sit well with the other merchants, and frankly we cannot have that. While you were all dishing out your food, the beginning stages of our plan have gone into effect. The shipping guild has taken control of the harbor of Bonetown. No ships shall pass in or out, unless allowed to by order of the shipping guild. Anyone caught trying to make a run for it, will be destroyed. Once this lawlessness is taken care of, the town and port will be going back to normal but as of now this is the ruling of the guild. As the most honorable, and morally centered group here I am under the assumption that you will be allied with us, and keeping the pirates and non paying merchants within the confines of the harbor. Surely they cannot be allowed to run amok on open waters and pillage from innocent ships?"

Sense Motive check as Elstred "discovers" the poison: 22. Is he lying? Did he expect this to be poisoned?

Zeoll smiles at the shipping guild leader. He reconsiders that when he prays to Lord Eberyon for his next Fey Gift, in six months or a year or so, he will actually ask for the gift of "Magic Trickery." Because there are a couple Still Silent spells he can think of that would be great to cast right now!

Instead, of course, he puts his considerable diplomatic skill to work. Inside, he feels angry at the guild's plan to sequester the heroes while they initiate their "coup," or whatever this is. And he knows that these people wish he and his friends no good. But they are clever enough to know that directly opposing the heroes would not end well for them.

And although these merchants, and their superior attitudes, stick in his craw, he cannot deny that the pirates of Bonetown have given up any right to protection they might have had when they took to the high seas for plunder and rapine. He uses this thought as he addresses Elstred.

"We have no love forr pirrates, and we arre not pirrates ourrselves, of courrse. I personally cannot oppose any plot or powerr-play that drrives such filth out of Bonetown. Yourr blockade may even be admirrable. Howeverr, you will not prrevent us frrom leaving now, on the hourr, as we have mentioned, because we have an errrand that will not allow delay. "But we arre herroes, not rrulerrs. So the goverrnance of Bonetown is not in ourr purrview. Good luck with it, I say, forr it will likely be a thankless task."

"Therre arre some few innocents in Bonetown, as you well know, and we would not sit by idly if they werre abused or attacked. I'm surre you will take that in mind, and errr on the side of caution."

Magana isn't the most diplomatic, but she does come up with an idea that doesn't involve smashing someone's head in... Maybe Zeoll is rubbing off on her.

Rillet adds that it is not wise to start a relationship by distracting the group. "You must understand kind sir, that I do want to work with your crew, but at the same time I am a realist and need to protect the guilds plans."

Terser addresses the fact that they need to leave and this discussion is for them to get their pass. " I am afraid that is not how it works. My ships have explicit instructions to stop any ship leaving the harbor. Any ship."

Aexana asks about the poison and before the waiters can take it away does a check on it. She can tell it is a low level, fatal poison. It is deadly in the right dosage.

Coer addresses the fact that the guild should return bonetown back to the people once the problem is secured. " Captain, the shipping guild only wants the town to be free of it's reputation as a pirate haven. Look at Rum, and at their reputation. As long as the situation is fixed, there would be no reason for us to stay."

Zeoll is suspicious of the man for finding the poison. He feels like Elstred expected to be poisoned, but that might be due to the fact he is in a position where he is against a majority of the town. When he asks about leaving Elstred again turns serious. "As I said kind Zeoll, the guilds instructions are to prevent any ship from leaving this harbor. Any ship seen making a run for it will be considered an enemy.

Elstred stands and excuses himself.

" I feel you will make the right decision, and make sure the honorable guild is helped by the crew of the Lionfish. I would like an answer by tonight, you can reach my men here as I will be back on my ship in a bit."

[OOC: I'm assuming that Magana yelled "Down" and then delayed long enough to allow us time to react. I also assume that Zeoll was not holding his shield for use during the meeting.]

When Magana yells, Zeoll moves out of the way. He moves to 2E, puts his face up to the arrow slit, and looks (move action).

Zeoll's perception through the arrow slit is a 26.

The old liontaur is looking for people who he can target with Hideous Laughter. Right up against the arrow slit, he knows he has as much improved cover as a person on the other side does from him, and he knows that a caster with improved cover does not provoke AoOs while casting. ["You can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you."] So he casts Hideous Laughter through the slit at a target he can see.

If there is a person standing right in front of the arrow slit, Zeoll casts his spell on that person. If it works, the target will not only be unable to take actions, such as attacks through the slit, but no one else will be able to either, since they cannot end move in the same square as the laughing guy. And since the laughing guy cannot move from the square.

If there is no person visible immediately in front of the arrow slit, Zeoll will target any person in front of the next slit, or any caster in range, or the nearest person, in that order. If Zeoll sees nobody at all, he listens to determine if he can hear anyone; if so, he'll cast Faerie Fire if there seem to be invisible creatures.

Zeoll does not bother to cast on the defensive because he knows he is immune to AoOs (from the other side of the slit) anyway.

Rillet moves to the other side of the wall, trying to get a look out of the window. From his vantage point he can see the second and third stories of the buildings across the way. He casts Obscuring Mist into the arrow slit.

Jozhur moves to the side of the door, trying to ambush whoever comes through.

Coerator takes his mage armor potion, and also looks out the window. He can tell that him, Magana, and Zeoll all can fit out the window.

Zeoll moves across the room, and puts his face directly in line with the arrow slit. He doesn't need to look hard, as he sees a man looking back at him. The man has been waiting for some target to appear(readied action), and proceeds to let three magical bolts peg Zeoll right in the face.(10 dmg).

Terser looks around to bar the door, but nothing is presenting himself. Pehaps the boat he thinks... but is quickly shot down.

Aexana calls down some lightning, waiting to spring into action with the spell once a target presents itself.

--------------------------------------------------
2 bolts fly forth from the other slits... 1 slams into Magana(3 dmg, Fort Save please). The second is in line to hit Coerator, but he slaps it away.

The doors bust open and in walks a huge half ogre, as tall as Magana and Coer and twice as ugly. His giant sword looks bigger in his huge hands. He doesn't see Jozhur who pops out and sticks him. Aexana also unleashes her spell, slamming a lightning bolt into the half ogre. Magana swings her flails, but the ogres armor absorbs it.

To his left and right, two more crossbowmen come in and drop to their knees. Behind them, two more men wearing silken robes. Behind the mages, it is a steady stream of men, all armored and armed.

That readied action to cast a spell on Zeoll ... by Magical Bolts you mean a magic missile spell? Zeoll's spellcraft to recognize the spell being cast is a 22.

Then Zeoll casts his spell ... did it work?

This round, Zeoll casts another Hideous Laughter (Will DC 21) on the mage behind the arrow slit. Then he turns invisible (Fey Domain power) as a move action and takes a five foot step to F2.

ooc: please forgive me if I'm doing this wrong. First PBP combat for me. I'm really not sure how much detail I need to provide.

There must've been some confusion over the Obscuring Mist - it's a 20' radius spread from the cleric. Currently, line of sight is blocked in spaces D2-3, E2-5, F2-5, G2-6, H2-6, I2-5. There should be essentially no line of sight into this room from the north arrow slits. Depending on how the DM wants to handle line of effect through the arrow slits, it may have seeped into the arrow slit room.

Rillett will move to E5 and declare, "Gargul's blessing is upon us, and hinders those that oppose us!" Casts Prayer, 40' radius burst, no save. Allies get a +1 luck bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks. Foes takes a -1 penalty on such rolls.

"Magana, I'm not sure this is the fight we want to have. If we defeat them, we may gain points with the town, but little else."

Zeoll recognizes the bolts as magic missles. His Hideous Laughter x2 spells go off, and he watches as not only the spellcaster but the fighter who was now seen to be behind him are both in fits of laughter. He turns invisible and steps aside.

Magana feels the poison enter her bloodstream, but other then the burning feels no effects. Twice she lays into the ogre. Smashing his nose in the process.

Terser uses his glaive to trip the cook and keep him off balance. The giant crashes towards the corner of the room. He does land on one of the crossbow men, which does not appear pleasant for the man.

Rillet is hidden in his obscuring mist, which now covers most of the room. His prayer fills his friends with a boon, and his enemies with a detractment.

Reggie is entangle with the crossbow man, and both are stuck for the time being.

As he does so he peers down to see what's directly below the window. "Captain, please open these windows, as I think we need to leave soon. I'll go see if healing is needed."

Rillett then moves up to just behind Magana, peering out of the mist to see the mayhem near the door. Seeing Magana's wounds, he says, "Magana, how badly are you hurt, because it looks pretty bad to me. Do you need me to get you out of here?"

Jozhur catches the crowssbowmen off guard and slashes him before moving behind magana and disappearing into the mist. (Adjusted a bit for Magana)

Again Zeoll uses the Hideous Laughter spell, and again it works. This time on the crossbowmen behind the slit.

Magana takes advantage of the crossbowmen pulling away from Jozhur and sends her flail in smashing into his head. His knees give out and he crashes to the floor. She then spins the flails again smashing into the Half Ogre, keeping him down. She tries to finish up the other crossbowmen but runs out of steam.

Coer moves to the side of the door and throws his javelin, but comes up with nothing.

Terser moves up and slashes into one of the sorcerers. (Adjusted due to magana).

Jozhur comes out of the mist and sends another arrow into the crossbowmen. He urges Magana to retreat.
---------------
When Magana moves up to the doorway, she can see the line of men prepared to attack and kill. The archers and warriors move to their backs against the wall, parting of sorts. An older man, adorned in silk clothes moves forward. It is not his demeanor, as he wears a smile, but his nonchalant additude of walking towards a room with two minotaurs, a liontaur, some great warriors, thieves and priests and has the mindset that he will walk back out that alarms Magana. That and the wand he pulls from his shirt, and begins to lightly rap on his cheek.

"Leaving so soon?" He asks.

He keeps some of the men between himself and magana.

Two crossbowmen by the doors fire at Magana but miss.
The uninjured sorcerer begins to cast a spell, but as for as anyone can see nothing happenes.

At the end of the street large wooden building looms, perched over the shantys like a great, protective bear. The poorer folk of Bonetown shuffle about their business, taking little notice of the party.

Rillett leads them up to great front doors, beneath a sign that reads "Temple of Rest" with Gargul's symbol beneath. He then turns aside down a short alley to a much smaller, much less grand entry where a sign reads "Gargul's blessing on all who seek life, and those that have passed beyond life."

As he open the door, he surprises an old man in the small make-shift entry to the church. "Oh, master Rillett. Good to see you back." He looks at the rest of the group, and mutters, "Ugh, the friends of the Shipping Guild. Well, everyone needs Gargul's help now and then. Come in, come in."

It is agreed upon to head to the Shrine of Gargul for some guidance in the situation. The misty morning and crowded streets both die away as the group heads deeper into the city, and to a more rundown portion of town.

The big building, isn't a church but an abandoned warehouse that was never finished being built. Portions of the roof don't exist do to no more money or even lack of interest in the building. Homeless dregs lay about on the streets running up to the shrine. A small door on the side is the only servicable entrance.

I cannot support an untimely death for all those people without a good reason. We saw that Elstread had an escape plan from their board room. No doubt they have an escape plan form their headquarters as well."

Rillett will open the door and call for someone named Turin. The old man answers the call. "Turin, in Yaas Farril here? Coerator heads back to the other rooms and hands out some of his food. the people are happy to accept, and when Jozhur comes around looking for clothes they are more then happy to help. Donations of scraggly shirts and dirty pants, a rat chewed cloak and even a poofy, tri corner hat.

While the discussion goes on, it is noticeable that Lew Is becoming nervous.

1) Gather info. Talk to people in town. Find out names, classes, powers of the top Guild leadership. Find out the names and crew of ships being used to enforce the blockade. Our friend the Guild turncoat will help a lot here.

2) Make a secret base, either outside town or ... where?

3) Attack their ships in clever ways.
(a) Walk on water at night to ships and then warp wood and attack the hull with admantine weapons.
(b) Use Water Breathe and wildshape and summoned creatures to attack ships from underwater.
(c) Call lightning on ships.

4) Raid the headquarters, kill Guild staff, retreat.

5) Use stealth -- steal Guild property, kidnap Guild staff.

Magana interprets the cryptic meaning into them staying and fighting the guild.

Jozhur uses Zeolls help to finish off the disguise, and also palm a weapon. He intends to scout around town and gauge the reputation of the party.

Terser likes Zeoll's idea of attacking the ships. His gloves took out golems, what would a ship do?

"It looked to me like Elstred was being held under duress. Perhaps the whole blockade was not even his doing. He could be being coerced by another actor in Bonetown. I believe the answer lies back at the Shipping Guild headquarters. I propose we sneak back under cover of darkness and uncover the truth. What say you all?"

Zeoll sighs. "We need to make some decisions. Firrst, we have two scouts out. We need to wait forr them to rreturrn. Then we need a courrse of action. Magana suggests waiting for nightfall, then sneaking into the Shipping Guild HQ. That idea has merrit. I suggest that we wait forr ourr scouts to rreturrn -- and we should discuss the plan while we wait."

Zeoll leads the discussion, but engages Magana often. What are the vulnerable points of entry? [OOC: DMs, since we have been there, can we get a map? List of exits/entrances? Windows? Rooftop?] Where is the best place to sneak in? Can the party take the time for a trip to the catacombs for Elixers of Sneakery and Potions of Invisibility?

Secretly, Zeoll is a little confused by Magana's attitude toward Elstred. Why does she think Elstred was coerced? Why does she think some other Bonetown power is influencing the Guild behind the scenes? Zeoll remembers that the enemy cast at least one unknown spell during the fight. What if it was some mental control? What if it affected Magana?

Based on these fears, Zeoll listens to Magana even more closely. He tries to detect the signs of mental control or influence. He engages Magana in conversation (see above) ... AND he takes 20 on his Sense Motive check. That's a Sense Motive of 29.

"Magana, I don't really understand what you hope to gain with a direct attack on the Shipping Guild headquarters. It's one thing to kill their sorcerers and guards in self-defense. But if we attack their stronghold, they will simply send those poor souls to be slaughtered by us, and then point at us as the aggressors. Wanton slaughter is not appropriate behavior for an Eye of Gargul."

"And why do you care about that jerk Elstred? Can you help me understand why you think he's doing this against his will? He deceived us, distracted us and seems to mean us great harm. If he were being forced to do this, there are a number of ways to get word to us otherwise."

Clearly his captor had decided we weren't going to cooperate and pulled Elstred, their puppet, out from danger."

"Now a townsperson arrives at our home. Brother Engev says he is not associated with the Shipping Guild, so what other reason would he have to come to us except to enlist our help against them? We already know all of Bonetown hate the guild, so rather than waste time talking to him, we should just attack! We already know the ones who attacked us in the Guild house are there. Zeoll casts his spell, and nothing that isn't part of the group shows as magical. Brother Engev radiates nothing, nor does Magana besides her items. He asks Engev to return, and the group is taken back when Brother Engev sharply says "No... this man specifically asked for the lionfish group. He came and knocked on the door, and asked for you. No weapons drawn, no magic used. He knocked and he asked to speak with you. I am not running back and asking him to come back tomorrow, because frankly he is a bit frightening. This is your issue, and the man came with no pretense of fighting, he came to talk."

Aexana, satisfied no enemies are around, flies back to the group to listen to the discussion.

Rillet questions Magana on why she thinks what she thinks. He too doesn't think an attack on the guild headquarters is a wise decision. Him and Zeoll both are getting no deception from Magana, and she appears to just be speaking her mind on the issue.

Captain Coer agrees that the issue shouldn't be brought to the headquarters in a fight. He doesn't want any more none needed bloodshed.

Outside in the city, Jozhur chats with the woman. he can see in her eyes she is actually listening to the disguised rogue. "Really sir? You sound like you know what your talking about." She turns to her friend. "Maybe we were wrong about them. Maybe they aren't bad."

Jozhur moves deeper into town, finally resting on a tavern that is known to cater to the seedier side of life. Inside, the ale and booze flow, and the talk is flowing as quickly as the booze. Jozhur can see some of the captains of some of the ships, some brooding amongst their booze. He can also see some of the towns guard, engaged in a game of cards that seems more to kill time, and get drunk, then it is to win any money. "

Lew clears his throat, as the discussion gets a little heated. " I can tell you that the man who came to your house is not a guild member, that is not the guilds way of doing things. I wouldn't trust Elstred, Magana. Rumors are his family is tied up in many shady deals, and less then reputable trades. No one knows the exacts of it, but he isn't the most trustworthy man in my eyes. I've been out enough, and need to get back into hiding. I don't see a trapdoor as being a particularly magical means of Elstred leaving the room. And he was laughing as he threatened us with his guards and his "cook". If we really want to get the scoop on what's going on in there, perhaps one of us could apply to be the new head cook, since we seem to have dispatched with theirs.

Terser agrees with Zeoll and Rillett. How could Magana's perceptions of Elstred's actions be so different than everyone else's?

After nodding to Lews as he heads out, Magana grumbles, "Well, I did not see a trap door. To my eyes he just vanished without any spell casting." She waives her hands in irritation. "Never mind. We were ambushed at our house and at the Guild Headquarters with no one held responsible. Let us just go back to the house and get ambushed again. At least that might give me someone to squeeze answers out of."

The lack of a clear target for her to vent her anger on seems to be making Magana a bit surly.

At the tavern, Jozhur orders a mug of ale and sits among the ship captains. Are the speaking out openly against the shipping guild? "I know everyone sees me as just a dealer of death, but the way I see it every life I take is one that would have taken someone else's life. Every life I take results in another being saved, so a balance is maintained. Plus I get to influence the fight in good versus evil, which Gargul doesn't necessarily care about, but I do." She shrugs. "He hasn't chastized me yet, so I'll keep following my concience."

As we walk, Rillett continues the discussion.

"Magana, it is interesting that you say that Gargul favors neither good. While Gargul's writings suggest he favors neither side, his actions clearly put him on the side of good. By it's very nature, evil seeks to deceive and destroy for it's own benefit. Good on the other hand favors truth and progress for the betterment of others. What can be more progressive than the creation and preservation of life? And surely death is the ultimate truth, cutting though all pretense and deception in the end."

"As for those that may think they serve no one, all will face the Lord of Life and Death one day. Even the great Bard Dylan said, 'You're gonna have to serve somebody'. Why not choose the Gargul then, since he represents the ultimate truth."

"But I will also destroy and deceive in the pursuit of my own ends. It happens that my pursuits are opposite of evil doers, but it makes my point that good and evil are not what Gargul pursues. He seeks balance. If he seems to be doing good works at this time, it is in the pursuit of that balance, not some innate quality that he posesses. Do not deceive yourself Rillett. Our Lord's end game is beyond our fathoming. To count on him preferring good over evil is sheer folly."

Once inside....Sitting in the den is a hooded figure. He sits by the wall, seated at the middle of the table. In all likelihood, one from your very own larder. The dark cloak he wears prevents you from determining any of his features. At least .. you think it's a he.

"We need to talk" It is a mans voice, deep, and raspy. His words are not said like someone seeking assistance or someone popping in for a friendly chat. If anything, it is conveyed more as if he will be the one talking and he expects you will listen.

As they walk through town, Rillett will also continue to debate the nature of good and evil with Magana.

Reaching the house, he can see that they come from a brightly lit street to a darkened room with an even darker stranger, putting them at a disadvantage relative to the man. Rillett has little patience for those that dwell in darkness anyway. As they enter, he will draw a ring hung on a leather cord from his pocket. Not In Vain [CDM Jerry]
Thursday April 30th, 2015 10:26:29 PM

Rillett's continual flame has no effect on the darkness surrounding the stranger. It must be powerful indeed. It does show the boundaries of the darkness surrounding the figure momentarily and then the light fades ending up with the power of something similar to a torch's brightness.

He stares at Coerator across the table and then at Magana. He ponders his response seeming to change his mind more than once. "You and your friends intimidate well. I am not sure that is a good thing." There is a slight pausing over the word "good."

He pauses again. Then he chuckles and that genuine laugh seems to lighten the tense mood in the room somewhat. "My you have had a difficult day." Please accept my apologies. I think I have taken advantage of you. I am known as Jack. That is not my real name, but when you join the Pirates of Jack, and accept a leadership position, your previous name is erased from your memory. So Jack will suffice. My title is the Jack of Diamonds. I am told that I have held this position three times.

"At this point in time, I am the official spokesperson for the POJ. I did not intend on doing this, but I see there is some trust to be earned this day. I will remove my cloak and hood. I admit that this is unfortunate as I will likely be put on the shelf for time and a day until they are assured that I have not risked the POJ entirely by breaking protocol. However, I believe I have no choice if I am to complete my mission here.

"Please forgive as the sight is not pleasant."

He stands. A tall lean figure, well over six feet, and begins to unbuckle his cloak slowly. Underneath is some sort of Dragonhide Plate adorned with diamonds. A sword is buckled to his left side. The scabbard seems transparent, showing the sword that looks like a living flame underneath. A Holy symbol of a small gavel is on a chain around his neck. It glows as well with flames.

However, these things are not what catches your attention. His right hand is made of adamantite and is connected physically to his arm with a strap. His face is scarred and has been burned badly. One eye is missing and has been replaced by a glowing diamond. His left ear has been torn in half and the other ear is missing. However, two glowing red earrings hang from where the ear lobes would have been if the ears had been complete. He has a black beard braided in dwarven fashion, though he is definitely human. He is of middle age, looking about 50 years old.

His teeth are exceptionally white as he sits smiling with the right side of his mouth and sits, making no threatening moves. Then as if an afterthought, he reaches with his left hand and peacebonds his sword.

"I was tortured by the High Priest of Ga'al for an extended period of time. They tell me it was likely two years. I was rescued at the point of death by the Emerald Dragons before my heardseeding was complete. Their laying waste to the primary temple of Ga'al was the salvation of my people and the people of Aisildur."

He removes his breastplate with a command in Tauric and opens the cloth underneath to show the scar where the evil plant had dug into his chest over his heart.

"I have had an....interesting life. It has been spent fighting Ga'al in every way possible for longer than I can remember...thanks to several memory wipes for security purposes. I simply knew too much and Ga'al's forces wanted what I used to know VERY badly. They were...diligent....in their efforts to obtain it.

"It is this lifelong quest to foil Ga'al at every turn that brings me to you."

He pauses as if he hasn't talked this long in ages and finishes his wine.

"But first I should answer your other inquiries. I have answered Coerator's question....yes I know your names. How could I not?"

"Magana, what have I demanded of you this day? I have asked no questions as of yet. Please sit and drink. I think you have earned it this day. As for your offer of "playtime," I sincerely hope it does not come to that or my mission will have failed." He pulls out one of the other chairs and offers it to the minotaur barbarian.

Reaching for his haversack, he says, "Blue Wine," again in Tauric. The neck of a bottle appears at the lip. He removes it. "I came prepared as you can see. This is important."

He turns to Zeoll. "I suspect we are on the same side as well. If we are not, then I have acquired new enemies for my people."

"Terser, I am glad there are no heartseeds among you, though I doubt there would be. They are somewhat rare these days above the seas.

"Adventurers, I have not come to battle, but to talk and talk of important matters. I hope my....efforts....are not in vain."

"Greetings, Jack of Diamonds. It is an honor to meet you, and I suspect it is rather rare to meet you as well.

My name is Rillett Savenport. I am an Eye of Gargul, so I can assure you that I do not serve Ga'al -- Gargul would have no patience with his clergy being controlled by a creature such as Ga'al. This has certainly been an eventful day, the second most peculiar day of my life.

I am new to these people, but I can tell you that they are kind and righteous beings. They act with honor and integrity from what I have seen. There are two others that I hope will be along shortly. I'm a bit worried about them actually.

Thank you for disclosing who you are. I am still wondering why you are here? I am also wondering why you said that heartseeds are rare above the seas? Do you mean to imply that Ga'al controls races below the seas with his infernal plants? What is the extent of his reach?"

ooc: sorry - not sure if you only wanted questions by e-mail, and how others would be involved in such conversations.

ooc: DM Jerry: are you sure you didn't mean PURPLE wine? Magana's gonna go medieval on Jack if it's blue. :)

DM RobC: The wine is indeed blue

Magana stiffens as The Jack produces the blue wine. Through clenched teeth she growls, "If you are trying to test my control, you should know that the next words you say will be the death of one of us if you answer wrong. Is that blue wine from the Tauric Isles and, if so, why do you possess it?"

She is nearly trembling with the effort to control herself.

Aex stiffens when she sees the assembled party drawing their swords. That was definetly not what she had hoped for. But when the guard advises her and Jozhur to leave she gladly complies.

Nodding to Jozhur she follows her friend.back to the Temple where the rest is.

Showing Some Patience [CDM Jerry]
Sunday May 3rd, 2015 9:26:26 PM

Showing some patience, he turns to Magana.

"Magana, that is because it was given to me by the Head of Imod in thanks for winning the Kayleb over a traitor who was seeking to overthrow the members of the Head. I had fortunate help from The Chosen. I mourn yearly on the day when the Heart was split in two. The Pirates of Jack have been allies of the Minotaurs and their mighty vessels for centuries.

Please feel free to check out my credentials with the Head if you wish. However, to appease your sensibilities, we will celebrate this meeting with Purple Wine instead. I am sad that you have refused my offer to make this a holy occasion. He puts the Blue Wine back his Haversack and says, "Purple Wine," in Tauric. He pushes the bottle to Magana, "I leave the honor of the opening to you, minotaur."

I also highly suggest that you do not use threatening tactics or intimidation with me. They will not work. I have been through too much, sir. I will not fight you as I wish you good fortune and good health. I would see my mission here fail before I would fight you.

Rillet, I am here for several reasons. First, to determine that you have not fallen under the sway of Billopl or Ga'al his manipulator.

Second, to tell you where your allies are in the conflict to come. You can trust the Harbormaster. There is more to him than you suspect. He watches. Become his ally and prove yourself to him. He knows more about how to defend the town and rally the people than perhaps any other person alive at this time. He has connections that extend far across the waves. Connections you will need.

Also, I have just come from the High Priest of Gargul in Rum. He yearns for you to go see him. If you value Bonetown and if those of you who follow Gargul are serious about your faith, take the time to go see him soon.

You cannot stop the Shipping Guild or Billopl on your own. Either are too powerful for differing reasons and both descend upon you like a plague. They number in the 100s and can call upon their entire trading fleet full of warriors and mages. Now is the time to gather the town to a common enemy!

- If you are successful in driving the Shipping Guild away, then consider ways of ensuring this does not happen again. Perhaps drawing more support for the Harbormaster and his men? This would hopefully allow Bonetown to become more secure from invaders. And with a stronger armed force, perhaps Pirates of Jack would be able to safely show their faces around Bonetown; the town they initially helped establish.

--Finally, I give you this warning: - Something darker than the Shipping Guild has its eyes on Bonetown. PoJ seers are foreseeing Billoopl making an attempt to destroy Bonetown. Should Bonetown fall, the Shipping Guild will have the most ships in the area, and who knows where their allegiance lies. The time will come where Bonetown, the party, the Pirates of Jack, and any other freedom lovin' sailor will have to stand against Billoopl.

Dm Shawn - Another one?
Sunday May 3rd, 2015 11:08:30 PM

The guard nods back To Jozhur. " No one will bother you on your way back to your home. You or the gnome."

True to his word, no guards or ship captains acost Jozhur or Aexana onnthe way back to the house and they make the trip relatively quick.

Ooc: Two more for you Jerry.

Aex enters the 'temple' and stumbles into the room almost falling over the doorstep the moment she sees the rest of the Lionfish Crew in discussion with a fairly intimidating fellow... He just seems to radiate power!

"Did we miss something?!", she asks keeping her distance from the table where now purple wine is served...

Therein is the entire problem. We've been trying to get to Rum, but the blockade is keeping us from being able to ship out. The high priest will just have to wait until we find a different way out or can deal with the situation here. Going to the harbormaster seems wise though.

After some consideration, he adds:

We don't want to chase out the Shipping Guild though. We just need a change in leadership. If Billoopl has set his sights on Bonetown, the Shipping Guild's forces would be most valuable in defending against him. What we really need is to get Terza back somehow. Maybe Lord Gargul could help with that if we get to his representative.

Aye Terser, that is an interesting idea. But how to get to Rum? Maybe the harbourmaster has a trick up his sleeve we can use to escape. It is his harbour after all."

When Jozhur and Aexana return, Zeoll introduces them to the Jack.

The old liontaur bows to the pirate leader when he says his piece. "Yourr worrds rreassurre me, Sirr Diamond. We will trrust the Harborr Masterr. And we will do ourr best to defend this city frrom the cult god. Thank you for coming to sharre this with us."

Zeoll thinks that bringing Terza back from death, and then to help her oust the knave, Elstred Gorstrom. Would Gargul agree? She has been long dead now, and he tends to favor heroes over merchants. But it is a game-changer of an idea, and he tells his friends that he likes it a lot!

"So we have to decide. Fight the Guild now, or go to the Temple of Rrum firrst, and maybe come back with Terrza."

When the Time Comes [CDM Jerry]
Monday May 4th, 2015 11:19:37 PM

Jack smiles and says, "I have made you look upon me long enough. I thank you for listening to me and considering my words." He dons his cloak and is covered by darkness once more.

I give you a token."

He pulls out a Joker Card from the haversack. Oversized, it is both old and obviously magical as the joker winks at anyone who looks at it directly. Jack lays it on the table.

"When the time for battle has come and the battle dire. We will come to your aid. The card will let you communicate with us and let us know where you wish for us to appear and position ourselves. Long live those who would oppose Ga'al and those he chooses to ally with. May they live until Ga'al is dead never to rise again!"

"Thank you again for listening."

He bows, shakes each hand, and departs out the front door. Two steps out the door, he disappears.

"I recently consulted Gargul on our leaving for Rum. I asked 'Should we delay our trip to Rum, as required by Gargul, to first deal with issues related to the Shipping Guild's recent activities in Bonetown?' Gargul's answer was, 'It is less you should delay the trip then you have no way to continue the trip without much suffering.'

"I interpret this to mean the suffering we will experience by attempting to run the blockade, and perhaps also the suffering of those we leave behind.

"Sir Diamond, can you think of a way for us to get to Rum without 'much suffering.' One way we considered is to use a Swan Boat Feather Token to get to Rum. I presume with your seafaring knowledge, you could tell us if this is a seaworthy craft, and if it can outrun other vessels? Do you have another means of getting us there safely, or do you have a way for the Lionfish to depart that will avoid attack by the blockade?"

Magana accepts The Jack's explanation, but feels his use of the blue wine is entirely inappropriate. She says nothing further to him, and waits out the discussion leaning against the wall with a glowering expression on her face.

Once he leaves she says, "That man has a overly high opinion of himself, but I think he speaks the truth. We should take his advice and seek out the Harbormaster."

Well, sure, we should deal with the Guild now I guess. And the Harbormaster seems like the ally for the job. But I really like the idea of raising Terza. I wish we had her body.

Perhaps a divination in regards to Terza would be appropriate. Without a body, we do not even know that she is dead. This would be even easier if we could rescue her from whatever decided to abscond with her.

"From what I've gathered, we should be able to gain some support if we do anything to overthrow Elstred or remove the shipping guild. I spoke openly about fighting the shipping guild in front of some guards and ship captains, they seemed mostly supportive. Hopefully word will spread as to whose side we are on."

I have not had he luck to meet this Terza you speak of but from what I'm hearing she must be quite a lady... but if you believe she isn't dead it might be best to look into that first. Slowly prepare before we take on the Guild... I think we're gonna need all the help.we can get..."

"If we can find or recover Tezra from Davey Jones Locker we may not need to fight the guild at all. She was their leader once... maybe they will follow her again. Why fight them to their last ship, when we could have their fleet as an ally.

This might just work without having to kill anyone... Sorry Magana"

What a plan, and it just might work if they can reach the temple in Rum. Coer is itching to get started.

"We should see the Harbourmaster immediately"
