3b The Long Reach of the Sea

Zeoll shouts a warning, and steps back invisible again. He doesn't smell any invisible threats but does see the inn patrons moving towards the bay.

Aexana buffets the man with more torrential downpour, and again he is able to ignore it and continuing casting.

Sam heals Spire for 12 pts.

Terser moves up and easily spots the caster, the man who is being buffeted by more rain and wind, has no defense when Terser swings his glaive, and watches as is it easily cuts into the mans robes and continues through, gouging the man in almost half.

Coer slams his fist into the baddies face, smashing what is left. Before the body drops he starts moving for the inn patrons. (Remember due to the storm movement is half). As Coer runs by, he begins to feel a surge of fear build up, but quickly disepates and doesn't bother him.

Spire glares at the one standing near him. The man sees the fear of the gods, and is shaken. Doing so cancels the Calm Emotions on all the Attackers.

Magana first realizing her initial target is an ally(Numbskull in the woods is Terser), she changes and swings at the one standing to her right. The first swing of her flail buckles the mans legs, the second spins his neck almost completely around. The thrust of the horns is just extra to the obviously dead man.

Jozhur puts a blade to the sleeping mans throat, and threatens his life to the man left standing.
"Alright, Alright" the man yells back dropping his sword, "don't kill Thiago please. We need to go...."

EVERYONE MUST MAKE A PERCEPTION CHECK using the following modifiers (which will all stack up):
-4 because of the continuing thunderstorm overhead
-2 if you're still trying to save Enthralled people from that Sleepwalk of Doom
-2 if you're actively engaged in combat

ALSO, some things to remember: Highlight to display spoiler: {MOVEMENT: Because of the heavy rainfall, the roads within Gullport (they're all dirt roads) have become rivers of mud, reducing movement to one-half speed.

SEEING & HEARING: The thunderstorm lashing the place has darkened the sky and loosed thunder all around the hamlet, so all Perception checks (as well as any tactics that rely on being able to clearly see and/or hear) suffer a -4 circumstance penalty; the penalty is -6 when in the vicinity of the beach/direct waterfront, thanks to the additional roar of the waves crashing against the rocky shore or cliff face. The range for seeing or hearing anything is cut in half.

LIGHT SOURCES: Thanks to the extremely dark storm clouds, the party will need to have their own sources of light if they are to see through the rain effectively. The rain and wind automatically extinguish any unprotected flames, and even has a 50% chance of extinguishing protected flames (such as lanterns).

WIND EFFECTS: Ranged weapon attacks and Fly skills are at a -4 penalty. Small (or smaller) creatures are unable to move forward against the force of the wind unless they succeed on a DC 10 Strength check (if on the ground) or a DC 20 Fly skill check if airborne.

Zeoll, not in combat, not rescuing walkers, rolls a perception at -4 ... a 23.

"Take them captive," he shouts about the downed and surrendered.

Unless that perception check reveals something major, the old liontaur decides the thing to do is to try to save walkers. So Zeoll spends the whole round racing as fast as he can toward the water.

Magana runs forward to the last baddie who believes he still has a chance. The man is preparing a spell when Magana plows into him. The spinning balls of her flail smash into the meager defense and bend the mans neck at an odd angle. His hands still move as if casting a spell, but he is long dead before his body hits the ground.

Sam casts dancing lights, illuminating the area some, and moves up. The strong winds and rain playing a part to slow him down.

Zeoll shouts a plan, and heads towards his shipmates.

Kane turns into a cheetah and speeds off after the walkers.
Aexana sees her friends have the three baddies under control, and speeds off in that direction as well.

Jozhur and Spire stay by the downed baddies, securing them and even bandaging them up.

Coer sprints to the walkers, wanting to help.

Zeoll moves to CJ-65 and looks at these things.

Knowledge Nature 14 to figure them out. Or Knowledge Planes 27 or Knowledge Arcana 19 or Knowledge Geography 12 ... LOL!

One thing he does figure on -- these are creatures of the sea, and therefore they most likely understand Aquan, a language Zeoll speaks.

Using his knowledge of the language, Zeoll casts his Command spell, forcing the seaspawn at 61CN to APPROACH!

If it fails its save (Will save vs DC 19) then it must move (and only move) to Zeoll.

The old liontaur's thinking is that it will provoke AoOs from Coer as it approaches Zeoll. Also, if he has set things up right, maybe it will end its move in flanking position between Zeoll and Coer.

"We trry things," the old liontaur murmurs. "Sometimes they worrk."

OOC to Coer: Even if you move to engage the other one, I think mine will still provoke AoOs if it comes near me, seeing as you have a 10 ft reach. Good luck!

A flash of lightning and the horror of fish-men arise from the shadows attempting to block Kane'-cheetah's path to the Sleepwalkers. Ugly but no less strange than the Sahaugin or Merfolk the Lionfish have met on Kane's maiden voyage with the heroes. Besides, thinks the wet-furred Witch, the protection of the Sleepwalkers is of more importance.

Altering his path to hug the westward house, Kane' avoids combat or even getting within arms reach of the fish-men. Instead, he paces on quick paws to gain the front of the Sleepwalking line!

Even in her rage, the sudden appearance of these ... things ... gives her a moments pause, then the instinct to protect her comrades kicks in and she charges! (to BZ/CA 58/59) (attack on BZ56)

Coer slides to a halt in the slick mud as Zeoll calls the beasts towards them. How will I get to the people... he thinks as suddenly a cheetah zooms past him and deftly skirts the fishmen.

I I hope that's one of us he mutters as he steps forward and begins as assault on the slimy creature before him. His eyes flash blue as he once again calls upon his Ki to enhance his powerful attack. He finishes off his attack with a brutal sweep of his horns.

Jozhur turns just in time to see the enemies approaching from the north. He moves to position himself between the approaching fishmen and Spire, trying to slip out of their sight as he moves and tries to hide at he corner of the building with his sword at the ready.

Zeoll recalls something about Seaspawn being aquatic outsiders, summoned to do bidding of someone. His spell goes off, and the Seaspawn starts to lumber towards him.

Sam cast expeditious retreat, and moves closer to the walkers.

Kane still in lion form zooms past Zeoll and Coer.(Your token is still the man, the lion token was Zeoll. You were originally at CB60) The cheetah makes it all the way up to the group.

Magana never satiated for bloodlust, charges the Seaspawn. Her flail flies forward and crushes into the ribs of the one before her. She feels the ribs crush beneath her swing, and hears the the familiar sound of the breath flowing from the creatures mouth as it breathes its last breath.

Coer steps forward to meet the two lumbering Seaspawn and opens up with punches and combinations. The first two punches blow throught he seaspawns defenses, and drop him were he stands. His milky eyes rolling into the back of his head, and his jaw obviously shattered. When he turns to face the one Zeoll commanded he continues his assault, and connects every time except one. His last shot actually pulls the seaspawn off its feet, into the air, and deposits its corpse into the wall of the building. It slides done, obviously dead.

Aexana is at CA 60(I swapped tokens for her since the gray blended in),She calls down lightning on one of the closer Seaspawns. who despite his size, manages to dodge the worse of the damage.

Jozhur sneaks up alongside the building, ready to make a sneak attack when the oppurtunity presents itself.

Spire can get the baddies in the blast without hitting his friends, but in doing so will hit buildings. ( I held your action, but if you want it to go off, it will detonate before any other actions next round, and you still will get your normal action.)

Seaspawn 1 moves towards Terser, who is waiting with his attack. His glaive swings, but misses. His AOO as the creature moves forward is more on line and strikes into the belly of the Seaspawn, cutting a curved line and giving site to the entrails. The body crumples before Terser.

Seaspawn 2 moves towards Terser as well. Jozhur jumps out of his spot, but is seen by the Seaspawn. He still manages to connect and hurt the seaspawn. The creature strikes back with it's rapier, getting through the armor of Jozhur 6 DMG

Seaspawn 4 takes his step forward to attack Magana, but instead is met with her flail. The balls doing the usual destruction they do, crushing the already wounded seaspawn and smashing her to the ground.

Expecting the last Seaspawn or other misfits to be disposed of quickly Aex keeps her Lightning Bolts for should another threat pop up...

With her Wolf double hustle speed (50 ft x 2 x 2) Aex is able to run from CA60 to CN60 to CN48 to CZ48 ready to hurl herself at the first citizen that feels the need to drown himself...
She tries to keep an eye out for trouble (perception 21 penalties are probably involved)...

It is only a quick jaunt by cheetah paws to lope up to Pinny and try to bite him on the hand. At the absolute last second, Pinny's foot kicks up a bit of mud right into Kane's open mouth. Uck! Yuck!

Kane' spits out the mud, having horribly missed Pinny.

Having dispatched the two fishmen, Coer continues his push to save the sleepwalkers. Shaking the goo from his hands he moves forward, his hooves dragging through the mud.

Spire holds off on casting his spell, deciding that the buildings are better off not-crispy. Quarterstaff in hand, he plows after Coer, hoping to help the taur shock some people out of their stupor.

Jozhur tumbles by the seaspawn, and tries to lunge at the abomination. His attack comes up short though.

Sam continues heading for the walkers, and is in the last seconds of his rallying speech.

Zeoll spends the entire round running, but it pays off as he gets to the walkers.

Aexana, thinking it is wise to hold onto her spells, heads in the other direction to try and cut off the walkers.

Kane tries to bite Pinny to awaken him, but gets a mouthful of mud for his troubles.

Terser catches his breath, but notices nothing new. The seaspawn before him is alive, and attacking Jozhur.

Magana(whose actions resemble a Young MC song) runs back towards the last remaining fight.

Coer continues heading for the walkers, with Spire following after him.

The remaining seaspawn swings his rapier, and manages to connect on Jozhur. The shot looks perfect at first, but at the last second catches a thick part of his armor. (6Dmg)

Zeoll dashes to the front of the line of walkers, moving to DA59 (move action) -- or as close to it as a move action will take him.

Kindly DM, note that Zeoll is a taur too, like the minotaurs. He is large and takes up a 10x10 space. I have not bothered with it in the battle, but as I contemplate using my body to block the narrow passage at CZ-DB-58, it sure would be handy to be my full size on the map! That would mean he is moving as close to DA-DB-58-59 as possible with just a move action.

As he moves, he draws a vial of acid.

Then he throws his acid so that it will splash! That way, hopefully all the splashed people will wake up. Zeoll wishes he could dash the vial on the roadway and splash three victims, but the mud makes Zeoll think the vial will not break. Too soft a surface. So he throws it at the building, which should be easy to hit.

He's aiming at something like CY-CZ-59-60 so that when it splashes, he'll get at least two victims.

The AC to hit a grid intersection is a ranged attack against AC5. Zeoll hits AC20! That's AC22 with Inspire Courage!He splashes (hopefully) 2-3 walkers with 1 hp acid splash damage!

He shouts to any who wake up, "Attack the ones still walking to the waterr! Snap them out of it!"

Finally, the old liontaur gets ready to attack any walker who walks by him and provokes an AoO. If that happens, his old paw hits AC20, including the inspire courage, for 3 hp damage. Maybe that will wake up another walker.

NOTE WELL! All of Zeoll's actions -- moving past people, throwing a splash weapon -- would normally provoke AoOs. But I'm betting the walkers are too distracted to be attacking.

Woops, didn't mean to leave one of you guys standing, Terser says to the seaspawn, expecting no answer other than a gurgle as he cuts it down. He must be more tired than he thought, as his strikes are lazy and inaccurate, but he at least provides enough of a threat for Jozhur to take advantage of the creature.

Magana thought there were two ugly fish creatures here, but now sees only one. The thought is a fleeting one though as her rage sweeps her into the next attack (on BQ58).

Zeoll moves into a better position, and manages to throw his vial of acid at the wall in front of him. As soon as the acid hit the skin of the walkers, and begins to sizzle, then victims come to. Horace slaps at the skin were the acid burns, while Pinny and one of the Elfblood crew yell in pain. Awake Horace,Pinny and 1 EB Crew Member

Terser also moves into position, to help cordinate an attack on the seaspawn. His glaive easily gets through the defenses of the aquatic outsider and cuts him deep. The gurgling from the creatures throat isn't loud enough to cover the gurgling of blood flowing freely from his wound.

Coer jumps over the group and lands on the other side. He slaps the lead walker still and awakens the man, a member of the Elfblood crew. As another trudges by, the minotaur reaches out and awakens them.

Aexana aims a steady her finger at the nearest target. A brief thought flashes through her mind - will this spell be too powerful?

DM Shawn: Please advise if you want to proceed with your planned course of action re casting lightning. If this is a normal NPC they will have D6 or less HP and even if they make their save you will still fry them. Then again, if they are preplanned NPCs they could have far more HP than even you! If you do not wish to proceed then last round will be treated as no action for Aexana as she grapples with the ramifications of casting such a spell, and the spell will not be cast.

Kane takes a chomp at the one in front of him, but the mouthful of mud from before must of still left a bad taste. Oddly, once he retracts from the attack, a white dove plummets from the sky landing next to Kane obviously dead.

Sam casts hold person on the last one of the group to be under the affect, and the man stops walking, stuck motionless.

Jozhur plunges his blade into the dead seaspawn, getting some satisfaction.

Spire continues his trek through the mud, passing sam in his process.

Magana charges at the seaspawn, but sees her glory of another kill taken away before she can reach him.

Well that was odd. These things certainly didn't seem to be singing. Maybe they're just opportunists, taking advantage of the situation. Or perhaps they came at its call, seeing as we weren't cooperating...

Terser looks around and sees no obvious enemies, but can't see much through the storm anyway. He does yell over to the acid splashed group that some mud would help take the sting from their burns, and then checks on the villagers he tried to help. Are any still alive?

OOC: As a player, I'm not sure if there are any other walkers near me. If there are more than one that are next to each other and next to a building, Zeoll will use the acid trick again to try to wake them up. Rolled vs AC5 to hit a building / grid intersection ... even a 7 without modifiers should do the trick.

If there is only one walker nearby, or if they are spread apart, Zeoll will try to wake just one or two, with a couple paw attacks or a paw attack and an AoO. The raw rolls for that: an 8 and a 17. At least one of those should do to wake up a sleepwalker.

Between all the tactics, the remaining walkers are awoken. Some look around blankly wondering why they are again in the the middle of a rainstorm when they last remember being in the inn. The two members of the Elfblood's and the member of the Pirates of Jack make their way back to the inn with as little as a thank you as possible. Phen, bows to you to show thanks , before heading back to the inn.

Finally Horace speaks up " I think we are the only ones that were in the inn that started the walk. I didn't see any others out here." He looks up to see the three tied baddies in the middle of the road "Friends of yours?"

Besides the mans weapons, Jozhur doesn't turn anything up on the enemy at his feet.

Zeoll says to Sam, "I hope you have some charrms and suggestions left. They'll come in handy loosening the lips of this lot."

He also searches the bodies of the living and the dead not merely for loot, but for clues as to what is going the heck on hereabouts!

Zeoll goes over to look at the downed seaspawn. Are they summoned creatures who disappear upon death? Or are they still lying there where they were cut down, implying they are either natives to the Wold or else called, not summoned.

If there are any lying there, Zeoll will check to see if any are still alive. If so, he casts Stabilize to keep them from dying, ties them up, and also checks them over for loot and clues.

Finally, Zeoll sniffs around, wondering if he can possibly track either the humans or the seaspawn back to wherever it is they came from. In this weather, he is doubting it, but what the heck. He tries, after recasting his Guidance and Taur's Try.

Once human again, the BloodWitch mutters a short burst of words that sort of sound like "Lono ka akua ohana, pau pilikia me ka makana aloha a Jozhur".

When finished, he but hopes for the best...

Kane casts his spell to heal Jozhur, but nothing happens.....

Spire, Jozhur and Aexana decide to head to the docks while the others decide a plan.

Anyone headed to the docks, I need a Perc check with a -6 penalty.

Away from the hearing of the captives, he says to the other party members I don't think we'll need to check the docks after all, unless Father Nogad is there. Hopefully we can get more information out of these men.

Zeoll figures there is time to Detect Magic later. Right now, he recruits the big taurs to help carry stuff.

"Magana! Coerr! Please put yourr most excellent muscles to worrk with this loot!"

He agrees that following these fellows back to their priestly leader is a great idea.

The old liontaur takes the chance to cast Mage Armor on himself.

Privately, he thinks the first thing to do is to help rid this town of the evil that demands human sacrifice ... that is, the thing that makes that summoning song. As well as its priest!

After that, it will be time to sit in judgement on the humans who may have been its victims, but who also conspired to feed it too.

Not wanting the humans to hear this, he shares these thoughts only in a whisper, and only in the Taur language, with Coer and Magana.

Spire offers up his Handy Haversack as a means of transporting many of the goods they have found. He will also cast Detect Magic to see if any of them light up. "Perhaps the other crews can bring these men back to the inn as we go down to the docks," he says. He will also take one of the holy symbols and inspect it on the way to the docks, trying to think of any details he would know about it or this Father Nogad. (Kn Religion - 28) His stomach churns as thoughts of the Beastmasters float to the surface of his mind again. I do not wish to tangle with those men once more...

Kane' slumps in failure. He was afraid as much as soon as he saw the dove, but had to make a try.

Numbly, the BloodWitch stumbles through the mud and rain, flashes of lighting and the peal of thunder barely registering as he goes to find the white dove. Carefully, he will cradle the lifeless form in his arms, and, mumbling to himself, will follow wherever Jozhur goes.

The rain drips down his face, the Witch indifferent to the weather because he failed in his test, and was found wanting.

Magana helps tote the weapons, either to Spire's bag or by carrying them directly to the Lionfish if necessary.

She tries to listen to Zeoll's words, but the howling wind carries his whispers away.

While the others gather the loot Aex wanders around the docks keeping an eye on the ships. She casually checks the water to see if there are any more dead bodies floating in the ravaging sea... in her wolf shape she's barely able to walk against the storm winds.

Ooc: I would on behalf of Rob and myself thank you guys for the perfect week last week.

Spire's detect magic spell makes the two sets of bracers light up.
On the subject of Father Nogad, he doesn't recall anything about hin. Nor does Sam.

The man, his eyes bloodshot from tears, looks up to Sam(possibly a first)... "Your a fool. No matter if you set us free or kill us, we will die by the end of the day one way or another. Father Nogad is going to be upset that we failed. My only solice is that some of the sheep who stayed on the boats took the swim. Maybe then I will be saved."

At the docks... the storm and sea meet in a colossal battle, spraying water everywhere as the rumble from the waves and thunder echo together. In the sea, scattered about are bodied. None move in distress, or seem to draw any breath. Besides the lionfish, three other ships are docked. The Wayfarer, a clipper ship in excellent condition, The Potentate, the largest ship in the harbor, armed with at least two ballistae and The Rakehell, an ironwood ship built to intimidate. The gangplanks are removed from every ship.

through the gloom, Aexana thinks she sees someone duck out of sight on the Wayfarer.

Aexana notices someone that apparently tries not to be seen on the Wayfarer... she howls but without Zeol present no one will understand her... Once Zeoll - who wanted to check out the Lionfish - is near she informs him about what she saw...

Bracing against the storm she goes closer to each ship to inspect them... hoping to catch yet another glimpse of whoever is hiding on the Wayfarer.

Zeoll and the others recall everyone from the Lionfish crew headed for the inn, so the ship has no souls aboard. Coer deposits the loot he carried into the hold.

Sams words fall on deaf ears as the man just sits and cries non stop.

Jozhur sees the ships are at the end of their own slips and would have to move closer to each ship to see anything useful.

Aexana moves closer to the Wayfarer, poking around. She hears a movement on the board, as a mans head peaks over the railing.

"Who goes there?"

Please tell us what you know and what you have seen, so that we can stop this abomination."

The storm and wind-lashed harbor does nothing to lighten Kane's mood, but his mind slowly slogs back to life. Kane' fights the temptation of feeling and participating for a while, but then has to admit that being mortal... life goes on.

At the Wayfarer, the man listens as Zeoll speaks.

"Aye, hold on a bit. I'll geet me captain." the man says in a cockney accent.

After a few tense seconds, the gangplank is lowered. A tall half-orc stands at the top of the plank, and motions with your hand to come aboard.

"I am Gruumshal, captain of the Wayfarer. I take it, you are part of the Lionfish crew? Did you lose anyone to the sound? Three of my crew men, good men lost their lives to that horrid sound. I ordered the crew to stay below deck until Terza returns to us. "

At the Rakehall....

As Jozhur moves closer to the ship, two men pop their heads over the railing.

"Aye... that is far enough human" the obvious half orc says. " No one gets on the ship without Jandal Phen's permission. And the way people keep dying, I don't see him giving that out kindly. So beat it, and clean the docks with your feet."

"Stop while your ahead" yells a human sailor, peaking over the railing. He holds a crossbow in his hands, and his compatriot behind him has a similar one.

"We're not buying and we're not selling so head back to the other ships and away from us."

At the Lionfish, Coer can see there is no structural damage.

Spire stands at the end of the dock, pleading with each of the party members as they pass, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. "I truly believe this is a bad idea," the elf proclaims multiple times. "I doubt we will be well-received. She may not even open her door to us."

"He aint no friend of mine minotaur, and neither are you. Why don't you show some intelligence and follow what the man said and head back to your friends. This boat isn't your boat, and these people aren't your people. You have a problem talk to Captain Creel at the inn."

The others, and Coer and Jozhur if they wish to join, begin to head back to their favorite priestess. The thoughts of her warm, caring, and giving house send promises of joy as much the storm sends promises of dryness. As for the storm, as if dialed down, it begins to rain less and the winds resemble a breeze more then a strong gust. As usual, when a storm ends, people are seen as well. In the distance, too far to reach, people are headed up the hill friom their houses to the church. The hurriedly run, as if they know the storm might kick back into gear any second.

Kane' is thankful the storm is dying down and agrees with the others to get to the church and the priestess. The Witch's thoughts turn to the storm and the fish-men, and he catches Zeoll's eye as the half-elf stubbornly sticks to Jozhur's side.

"Zeoll Sir, you were outside at the first storm and singing. The storm wasn't bad until just before the singing started, yes? And this time the storm rose and fell in timing with the singing. It may be that we have a warning now when the next singing attack will be."
